Close Binaries Chapter 11. Kidnap / Eggnog
A/N Here are 1800 words (!) in which I continue to have no clue how the American educational system works, nor what an average Performing Arts curriculum entails. That is why this is an AU, but hey, at least we get some Blaine-on-Kurt time again? Also, not one, but TWO canon references - I’m on a roll, people! Apart from the fact that I’m not even halfway through the advent and Christmas has passed, that is. Also also, I’m trying to keep these pieces readable as stand-alone one-shots, but there might be some references to previous chapters in here that are difficult to place. Just... roll with it?
1. athlete / snowman // 2. bury / cinnamon // 3. camera / candle // 4. deputy / paper // 5. exclude / ribbon // 6. feed / festival // 7. gradual / star // 8. house / gift // 9. incident / latke // 10. joke / light
It’s late when Kurt gets home that night. His class’ Performance midterm is tomorrow, and they’d booked the theater to run through the whole play one more time. And then another time. And another. He’s never been more grateful to his perfectionism for insisting his props were of the highest quality, even if they were meant for one performance only, because otherwise he’d have spent the whole night either fixing them or replacing them.
Redoing the one turkey had been more than enough, thank you.
But as he sets his bag down on the couch and makes for the kitchen to make himself some warm milk, he hears arguing voices coming from Rachel’s room.
“-even worse than the last one. We’re doing it again!”
“Rachel-”
“You don’t know what I’ve been through! How hard I’ve worked! I DESERVE to be at NYADA, and I won’t let ANYONE take my spot away from me! Especially not-”
“What the hell is going on here?”
Kurt’s not entirely sure what he expected to see when he burst into the room, but it was not this.
There’s a camera set up, pointing at a blank piece of wall that seems to be serving as a backdrop for whatever was happening. Rachel herself is not currently in front of the camera, but standing near her desk where her laptop is showing a recording of her singing. She’s looking terrible - her hair a mess, her cheeks flushed with anger - but it’s nothing compared to the poor guy sitting behind the laptop who, now that Kurt’s taking a better look-
“Blaine?”
He knows Rachel had a classmate coming over tonight to work on some assignment. It was a do-over of sorts that she needed to both pass the course, and get to retake the course - Kurt is a little fuzzy about the details, but she’d been ranting about it all Monday evening. He does know that the classmate in question is her self-appointed archenemy Cronut Critter: a fellow NYADA freshman who is so devoid on talent he must have bought his way into NYADA (unlikely), is a terrible diva who is impossible to work with (takes one to know one), and who has made it his mission in life to upstage Rachel whenever possible (understandable).
He also knows Blaine - at least as far as you can know someone who you’ve sold two cupcakes to, and with whom you’ve exchanged an e-mail or two about the recipe. But Blaine is polite, and funny, and sweet, and also terribly cute, with a round little butt and warm, brown eyes that were full of life and sparkle the few times Kurt has seen them, and it almost breaks his heart now to just see tiredness and exasperation.
Cronut Critter is Blaine. Blaine is Cronut Critter, and Kurt is grappling with the truth of that. However, he has bigger fish to fry.
“Rachel, what are you doing? It’s past midnight, don’t you have a midterm tomorrow?”
“Who cares about midterms? My future at NYADA is at stake! All because someone,” and she glares at Blaine, who seems to shrink just a little, “doesn’t know how to properly use video processing software.”
Blaine’s jaw clenches, but he doesn’t say anything.
“Nobody knows how to use video processing software after midnight,” Kurt says, rolling his eyes. “Why don’t you just continue tomorrow evening?”
“Tomo- that’s- I can’t- it’s- No!” Rachel stutters through her sentences, too angry -or too tired?- to finish any of them. “The deadline is Thursday, which means we have to send it in Tuesday at the latest!”
"If the deadline is Thursday, you can send it in Thursday,” Kurt counters dryly, continuing before she has a chance to protest. “Besides, it’s after midnight, so technically it is Wednesday already. Most importantly though, I have had the longest rehearsal of my life, and I need to sleep - and I’m not gonna listen to you sing progressively worse through the night.”
“We’ll use headphones,” Rachel says stubbornly, crossing her arms. “Blaine is not going anywhere until my video is perfect.”
“Rachel. You can’t kidnap someone over a college assignment.”
“I can if my future is at stake!” Rachel yells back. “It’s his fault that we have to redo it in the first place, so now it is his responsibility to fix it!”
None of what she’s saying is making any sense, but Kurt wasn’t lying when he said he desperately wanted to sleep. Which means he’s going to have to take drastic measures.
“Ok,” he says, straightening his spine and lifting his chin as he marches forward. “You-” and he points at Rachel, “are shutting down the camera, closing the laptop, and going to bed.”
“But I-”
“You are going. to bed. ,” Kurt repeats, glaring at Rachel until she averts her eyes. “There’s not going to be any more singing, video editing, or anything other than sleeping going on in this room tonight. Not even with headphones,” he adds sternly, before Rachel can even open her mouth to suggest it. “I will hear it, and if I do, I will not help you with the editing tomorrow evening, is that understood?”
It takes another few seconds of glaring before Rachel nods meekly, and Kurt turns his attention to Blaine, who until now has not said a word and seems to have been trying to be as invisible as possible.
“And you,” Kurt tells him, voice now softer, compassionate, “are coming with me. I think we both could use a drink.”
It is in absolute silence that Blaine clambers up and follows Kurt out of the room, and Kurt can almost feel the relief emanating from him as they leave Rachel to herself.
“I’m sorry about Rachel,” he says, rummaging around in the cupboards for an extra mug, adding more milk to the pot already on the stove. “She can be a handful sometimes. But after she choked on her first audition, for the longest time it looked like she wouldn’t get to have a second chance. So now she’s terrified of anything that could take it away again. I don’t know what happened with your assignment but-”
Kurt has turned around to find Blaine standing in the exact same spot he left him, right in front of Rachel’s door. He’s just staring at Kurt, wide-eyed and exhausted, arms hanging limply by his side.
“What?”
“H-how are you here?”
Kurt looks at him.
“I... live here?”
“With Rachel?”
“Yes, with Rachel.”
“Oh.”
He’s still not moving, and Kurt’s starting to think maybe the poor guy has gone into shock. That would be a first, even for Rachel, but then again, she had been acting completely crazy, and God only knows how long Blaine had been stuck in that room with her, recording and re-recording songs.
“Are you alright?”
“I’m...” Blaine hesitates, looking back over his shoulder and back at Kurt, like he still can’t believe he made it out. “I think you may have just saved my life?”
Kurt bursts out laughing, and as he walks forward to hand Blaine his mug, he sees the corners of Blaine’s mouth curl up in a smile as well.
“Come on, sit with me.”
He leads the way to the couch, snuggling into the corner as he watches Blaine follow after him, looking suspiciously at the mug in his hands.
“What is this?”
“Warm milk,” Kurt says, and after seeing Blaine’s confused look, he adds defensively: “It’s delicious!”
“I’m not protesting,” Blaine reassures him. “Just... not what I was expecting when you said we could use a drink.”
“So, what, you wanted eggnog or something?” Kurt teases, and Blaine laughs, a wonderful, heartfelt laugh, and something skips in Kurt’s stomach.
“Didn’t you say you wanted to go to bed?” Blaine asks, hesitating before he sits down in the couch, but Kurt shrugs.
“Not like I’m gonna fall immediately after that,” he says, nodding towards Rachel’s door. “So I can just as well. Unless... you want to go home?”
“Nonono! No, no, I mean, sure, yeah, I should be heading home soon, but as you said, I can, you know, use a little time to, well, unwind. And, you know, it’s cold outside so, warming up beforehand is probably a good idea. Yeah.”
It’s cute almost, how Blaine is stuttering his way through his sentences, obviously trying to be cool about sharing a cup of warm milk with a near-stranger in the middle of the night. It’s a stark contrast with the suave, polished Blaine that had e-mailed him before, and again completely different from the stories he’s heard from Rachel about this highly ambitious, overachieving classmate of hers. It reminds him of himself as a freshman just a year ago, trying desperately to find his spot at NYADA, balancing his ambition and his need to make friends.
It wasn’t easy.
“Are you sure she’s not gonna come out?” Blaine asks, glancing at Rachel’s door with a hint of fear on his face, and Kurt smiles, following Blaine’s line of sight.
“Pretty sure,” he says. “She can get crazy, but she usually knows when she crosses the line. She just needs someone to call her out on it. And she knows I keep my promises, if she keeps hers, so I know I can trust her to not be eavesdropping at her doOr if shE waNTS MY HELP EDITING TOMORROW!”
He’s raised his voice progressively over the last sentence, so he’s actually shouting at Rachel’s door by the end of it, and they both hear a stumble and a hard bang.
“I’m okay!” Rachel shouts from behind the door. “Just a nightmare! I’m okay!”
Kurt smiles, shaking his head over the predictability of Rachel’s antics, and turns his attention back to Blaine.
“So, tell me. Why exactly does Rachel think she’s gonna lose her spot at NYADA over this assignment?”

How To Compress Information
Methods to convert AIFF to MP4 online with AIFF to MP4 Converter? Agree and disagree. Technically it is true that changing FLAC files necessarily means you cannot play those files in iTunes. Nevertheless it's not true that the knowledge is pointless, as the majority of folks desirous to play FLAC files on iTunes are in search of FLAC-quality music on iTunes, and do not care about the precise extension. Keep away from compressing the identical audio to mp3 greater than once. Opening and resaving an mp3 file causes it to be recompressed, so any artifacts from the compressing process turn into extra pronounced. Now underneath the Audio Codec tab choose the MP3 codec, choose a Bitrate, amount of channels, Pattern Rate, after which click the Save button. • Hyperlink to transformed information is just obtainable for 1 day. Click "Add Files" button to choose AIFF files and add them to conversion record. Observe: To ensure compatibility with a wide range of applications, select the RF64 format for files better than 4GB. To combine session and supply files for simple switch to other techniques, select Save Copies Of Associated Files. To change format and pattern type for exported supply information, click Choices.
Straight convert to popular cell system formats and then transfer transformed or edited video to them simply with USB cable. Notice: In Home windows 10, click the Start button and scroll right down to the "W" part to seek out the Windows Media Participant program. This will convert any format to mp3 and AIFF to MP4 Converter free different. hope that helps. What does this imply for you? Properly, the MP3 format uses compression which actually removes data from a tune utilizing complicatedalgorithms. The rationale for eradicating this knowledge is to avoid wasting space and make the file smaller. Convert iTunes M4A, M4B & Audible AA, AAX audiobooks to plain format. The app can convert multiple files concurrently in a batch, saving them in a ZIP archive to speed up downloading. Audio Interchange File Format (AIFF) is an audio file format customary used for storing sound data for personal computer systems and other electronic audio gadgets. The format was developed by Apple Inc. in 1988 primarily based on Electronic Arts' Interchange File Format (IFF, widely used on Amiga programs) and is most commonly used on Apple Macintosh laptop techniques. Every once in a while, I see some very odd comments about audio file formats. I just read a remark to an article about excessive-decision recordsdata suggesting that that FLAC compresses the dynamic range of information. Velocity might not be an essential consideration if it's worthwhile to convert just a few files. Nevertheless, a quick converter software may prevent hours when you have quite a lot of recordsdata to transform, or end up changing files often. Slow conversion pace is the biggest downside when using free converter software. When you use Home windows, you will get a free model of dBpoweramp , which may convert information, and a paid version, which you should utilize to tear CDs, edit tags and more. Unlimited video downloading and converting to MP3. Obtain and install program onto your laptop. Here is the primary interface of AnyMP4 AIFF to WAV Converter software. And then, launch the AnyMP4 Video Converter in your pc. Converting a lossless audio file, like WAV or FLAC, to a lossy format, like MP3 or AAC, results in a lack of constancy. If you could send a lossless audio file to an e-mail account with file size restrictions and you're apprehensive about sending sensitive materials utilizing a cloud service, like Dropbox or Google Drive, aiff to mp4 converter free a file compression software is a good option. Listed here are some of our favourite file compression packages. The audio converter app works completely-i lastly discovered a freeware to transform FLAC to Apple lossless and maintain the tags. iTunes has many preset settings ranging from iTunes Plus (high quality, mid-sized files) to "Good High quality" mp3's (low high quality, small information). If you're doubtful, select automatic or iTunes Plus. In the Multitrack Editor, www.audio-Transcoder.com choose File > Export > FCP XML Interchange Format.Altering an entire bunch of files from one lossless format to a different is way faster than re-ripping, and (given that you've got been cautious to check the conversion setup) carries no high quality penalty regardless of what number of instances you do it. So personally I do not see the necessity for you to change besides you're positively going to purchase the Simaudio (or one other streamer that has file format limitations).

First Journal for Web Design Spring 2019
1/18/2019
My History with Web-Design:
The first time I ever considered web design was last semester during the intro to design class where we were told to design one. It was horrible, I had no idea how to even approach it and ended up just throwing pixels at a screen until I technically put in enough work to justify turning the project in. I never even thought about websites before then as I always saw them as inconvenient mediums to whatever content I wanted. This reminded me of when I first started in graphic design and literally couldn’t tell the difference between Futura and Baskerville by just looking at them because of how new this field of design was to me. The panic of the oncoming slaughter that would be known as class 576 pushed me to research as much as I could into the field, especially in how to physically make the websites with code. I focused on code in part because of my experience in Adobe programs. Before I can make an illustration in Illustrator, I need to know the mechanics of the program so that I can work at the speed of thought without being stumped. I saw learning how to code as just the web design version of that, though to a certain point I think I was confusing being able to do whatever I want in the browser with being able to design things that are worth making.
I’m coming into this semester very excited for learning how to design for the web.
The First Project Process:
The assignment was to make a website focused on three things that were our favorites in a category of our choice. I may have misunderstood the prompt a little as I thought we were supposed to make a site to house three article listing three of our favorite things in three different categories, rather than one website acting like the article itself listing the three favorites in only one category that the website is entirely dedicated to. I started in my sketchbook before touching the computer just to get some ideas out before I jumped into the computer with no direction and find myself a deer in the Adobe RGB headlights.
Making the initial wireframe in Photoshop was not an issue, save for some elements that found themselves on the same layers as each other which made editing later difficult because moving objects in Photoshop is difficult when they’re sharing layers. I wrote the colophon in my notes as analog paragraph styles instead of trying to work with whatever nightmare Photoshop’s version of styles must be like. I eventually started doing the text in Photoshop to save me the trouble of having to replace everything from InDesign everytime I wanted to change anything, as per Michael Jared’s recommendation.
The problems I started having in Photoshop was when I started working with photos. Usually, I love using PS for photo editing and photo-comps but using it as a layout software is frustrating as each resizing requires manual rearrangement of everything on the page. Making things more difficult was the problem of multiple objects being on the same layer coming back, as they had different rules for how they need to move I needed to constantly code switch between the free objects and the layered ones.
After there were a few basic sketches done using shapes and a system of values to denote the difference between images, texts, and sections, I started populating the file with content, slowly phasing out the shapes. I’m embarrassed to say that the design decisions I made were solely based on the intuition that I don’t have. I decided on a landing page design of a bleed image with some big text over it because that’s what I see on all the web design Instagrams, which is pretty much the only place that I get around to seeing any web design examples for my still shallow internal visual library. The placement of the text and images in a strict and boring grid was based on instinct and my incompetence with working in Photoshop for this purpose completely stunted my ability to explore any other options.
The minimalism in my designs come from my instinct to remove anything unnecessary out of a fear that the alternative is just a mess of content and design elements that I wouldn’t know how to make work. I’m retreating into minimalism because I’m often at a loss for ideas, inspiration, and confidence. I think this has worked out for me a lot in the past as I understand the way to make low detailed content work is to make sure there’s more attention given to each piece of that content, but at the same time I don’t want it to be something I have to do, but rather something I want to do. There is also the issue that I often find my work to be very boring and derivative. The landing page above just reminds me of YouTube, the website that I’m on the most. During the wireframe portion of this design, I was feeling very confident in it and I loved the way it looked. That is until I realized how simple it was and reflected on how little exploration I really did. I fluctuate drastically between feeling overly arrogant and wondering how I could ever survive in this program, something that I expect a lot of designers could relate to.
The image above is of the splash page for the website.
The image above is the article featuring my favorite music genres. The part of the project I’m still mostly proud of was my work with data-bending. I love the process of designing procedural rules for how art should be created rather than creating the final product itself. I put images into Audition and edited them using soundwaves similar to the genres I was showcasing as my favorite to demonstrate how they look in the context of the image I used here with basic shapes and colors. What I wanted was to mix specific songs with the image to produce a more specific result. When I figured out how to do that the final product did not look very good because of hardware compromises I had to make. When I tried to use the image at the highest quality it was 1 hour and 45 minutes long, which meant the song had to be just short of that in length to be mixed properly. I still don’t know if this would work in producing something aesthetically pleasing, you never do until you see the result, but I would like to have experimented with that if my computer had enough RAM for the operation. It’s normal for only 1 in 10 images mixed with sound to look any good at all in my experience, which means experimenting many times in a short time frame is critical to using the medium effectively.
On Code:
I’ve been reflecting on my resistance to learning a bunch of new programs for future projects. I think a part of it is that I struggle to learn new programs through experimentation, but rather extensive tutorials that walk me through the sensory overload of icons, options, and settings. Before the semester I put so much time into making code the thing that I learned that I was a little disheartened to learn I would have to do the same for a bunch of other programs, but I think it will be fine. When I decided to learn code I promised myself I would never limit my design to what I could do with code, but rather learn how to do it later, and as long as I approach these programs with the same philosophy, then while it might be frustrating and time-consuming to learn how to do what I want, it should be more than doable since they are designed for web design, unlike Photoshop. Apparently, engineers think Photoshop is designed for this kind of work, they’re wrong and that’s why I’m not an engineer, that and I’m bad at math.
One of the things I did in preparation for this class was learn how to code. I started to do this because the idea of using illustrator and XD to make images of the idea of a website rather than actually making the website frustrated me and sounded like it was adding extra unnecessary steps. I was approaching code the same way that I approached any adobe program, it was just something I learned the mechanics of so that I didn’t have to learn while I designed or limit my designs to what I knew how to code. This is the same as in illustrator or Photoshop where I need to sketch out a design and hope that it’s possible to learn how to do in the program. The key with code, that I didn’t realize before I started learning it, is that there are almost no limitations or hoops to jump through. If I want to do something with the website, I just type it and it happens, and if that something is complicated then instead of spending an hour on google looking for a setting that lets me do in like is Illustrator, I just break it down into smaller steps and do it. It makes me feel like I’m no longer being limited by the technology when I code because it’s so clear what I can and can’t do.
It’s not that I think my first project would have been leaps and bounds better without Photoshop, I don’t mean to blame Photoshop for my shortcomings with the design, but there were some things that I simply couldn’t do because I couldn’t figure out how the makers of Photoshop wanted me to do it, such as changing the colors of shapes, and Google was no help on this issue. The other reason that coding has felt natural to me is how intuitive it is to start with nothing and build out. In the Creative Cloud, I am given every tool to use right when I open the program, and it’s information overload. I often have nowhere to start and in worst cases, I get genuinely claustrophobic because I don’t know what I’m looking at until I spend at least 10 or so hours being walked through the interface by tutorials. Coding is the exact opposite workflow. Instead of starting with everything and adding rules, slowly making everything more organized and follow those rules and hoping you don’t miss anything, coding starts organized and with every rule and restriction you could ever have because of the defaults, and I work at my own pace to slowly usurp those defaults and write my own rules for how the website should be. It forces me to set the foundations for the design and work out, rather than forcing every idea I have into one document like I tended to get myself in trouble doing in the past. It also forces me to keep the design structured. When it’s in code I feel like there’s a backbone to the site, and I’m building the body on top of it, as opposed to InDesign which feels like I’m just throwing pixels at a screen blindly and hoping that it works. My brain just responds better to the amount of control you get with coding things, which is not something I expected when I first started learning it.
The disadvantage of code is a significant one. The organization and the foundational nature of it does not lend itself well to exploration. If I want to change something fundamental about the design, then I would have to do a significant amount of reworking, whereas with Photoshop I was able to change the core design ad hoc until I liked it. I had very little issue doing my initial sketch, or wireframe, in Photoshop, and I think it’s necessary to start with sketching in a notebook and then moving to a sketching application. So, in an Ideal world I would do the sketching and wire-framing in my sketchbook and Illustrator, and then make the final version in code where I’m not limited to what Illustrator is okay with me doing. I am hoping that Adobe XD will provide the best of both worlds. Where I can change things on the fly without cutting and pasting a ton of text and hoping I didn’t make a mistake when doing so, which is what Illustrator provides and being functionally structured enough that I don’t get overwhelmed, which is the benefit of code. I intend to try coding my websites after making them in these prototyping programs to polish my skills in code and to boost my self-confidence, but I will not make it a priority until it’s time to make fully functional websites, at which point I’ll get Susan to teach me GitHub.
Wrap-Up:
As I said before, I fluctuate between being overly confident and feeling like there’s no way for me to survive in this program. When I was coming into this class I was in the overconfident stage, and after critique where I saw everyone else's work, I’m shifting into the other stage. Based on the work that I’m doing in this class and in Typography 2, I’m starting to feel concerned that I haven’t actually improved in the past 8 months or so, but instead just learned a couple of rules to make something look good despite not having a great concept behind it. Whenever I do something that I’m very proud of It’s usually an accident that I run with, which is an observation I’m not totally uncomfortable with. I know that I’ve improved at least some despite my doubts, and I’m proud of my ability to see the beauty in mistakes when I’m working that often leads to the final works that I end up being the proudest of.
I had a lot of plans of doing a ton of self-directed projects this semester considering I have plenty of time for it, but after a couple weeks I’m deciding to cut those expectations of myself down in favor of focusing much more heavily on my classes and developing specific side skills that I’ve wanted for a long time, such as the ability to code and draw. I’m also making it my goal to become more proactive on social media and build a designer presence there to the best of my ability. With all that and finally getting the new computer I’ve wanted for so long this weekend, I think it’s been an acceptable start to this semester.

14 PowerPoint Presentation Tips to Make More Creative Slideshows [+ Templates]
youtube
I like to think of Microsoft PowerPoint as a test of basic marketing skills. To create a passing presentation, I need to demonstrate design skills, technical literacy, and a sense of personal style.
If the presentation has a problem (like an unintended font, a broken link, or unreadable text), then I’ve probably failed the test.
Even if my spoken presentation is well rehearsed, a bad visual experience can ruin it for the audience.
Expertise means nothing without a good presentation to back it up. For starters, grab your collection of free PowerPoint templates below, and use the tips that follow to perfect your next presentation.
No matter your topic, successful PowerPoints depend on three main factors: your command of PowerPoint’s design tools, your attention to presentation processes, and your devotion to consistent style. Here are some simple tips to help you start mastering each of those factors, and don’t forget to check out the additional resources at the bottom of this post.
How to Make a PowerPoint Slide
Open Microsoft PowerPoint.
If a page with templates doesn’t automatically open, go to “File” at the top left of your screen and click “New Presentation”.
To use a template, either click the “Design” tab or go to “File” again and click “New from Template”.
Insert a new slide by clicking on the “Home” tab and then the “New Slide” button.
Consider what content you want to put on the slide, including heading, text, and imagery.
Keep the amount of text under 6-8 lines (or 30 words) at a minimum of size 24 pt.
Add images by clicking “Insert” and clicking the “Picture icon.
Add other elements by using features in the “Home” and “Insert” tabs on the top ribbon.
Play around with the layout by dragging elements around with your mouse.
How to Make a PowerPoint Presentation
A presentation is made up of multiple slides, and now that you know how to make one, you can delve deeper into PowerPoint’s capabilities.
1. Open a blank presentation again or start from one you’ve already created.
If you’ve already created a presentation, double click the icon to open the existing file. Otherwise, open Microsoft PowerPoint, click “File in the top left corner, and click “New Presentation.” From there, you can follow the prompts to set up a new presentation.
2. Choose a “theme” or create your own.
Microsoft offers built-in themes and color variations to help you design your slides with a cohesive look. To choose from these pre-built themes, choose the “File” tab again, select “New”, choose one of the options, and click “Create.”
Otherwise, you can use PowerPoint elements, your design sense, and your brand’s color palette to make your own “theme.”
3. Create a variety of slides for different purposes.
You don’t want to present the same exact slide, just with different content on it. This would bore your audience. Ensure that you create multiple variations, accommodating some of the common uses for slides. At minimum, you’ll need:
A title slide
An agenda or table of contents slide
A slide that introduces the speaker
Various content slides (create different layouts considering what kind of multimedia you’ll use)
4. Use the Duplicate Slides feature to save you time.
There’s no reason to create these designs over and over again. Now that you have a few to draw from, you can simply duplicate them before inputting your content. Here’s how to do that:
On the left pane, right click the thumbnail of the slide you want to duplicate.
Choose “Duplicate Slide” from the pop-up menu.
This will automatically add a copy of this slide to the presentation. From there, you can customize it for your needs.
5. Add transitions to your slides (optional).
Done well, transitions can add a little bit of movement and showmanship to your presentation. PowerPoint has several transitions built in for you to choose from.
To access them, select the “Transitions” tab from the top ribbon. From there, you can select a transition for it to preview on your screen. To customize it further, click “Effect Options” and play with the features to find something that suits your liking. To remove a transition, select “Transitions” and click “None.”
6. Add animations to your slides (optional).
Like transitions, animations can add movement, reveal information, and help you underscore the points you want to hit during your speech. To animate an element, follow these steps:
Select the element you want animated by clicking on it.
Choose “Animations” from the top ribbon.
You’ll have the option to choose from several effects displayed in the ribbon.
Clicking on one will give you a preview.
To customize the animation, select “Effect Options.”
To remove an animation, click “None” in the ribbon.
Some of the ways to customize animations include:
On Click
With Previous
After Previous
Duration
Delay
These describe how you want the effect to behave, so play around with them until you find an effect that suits your liking.
You’ll also have the option to move animations around as you edit your slides with the “Reorder Animation” function in the top ribbon.
7. Save your presentation.
Click “File” and “Save”, making sure to specify which folder or destination you want your PowerPoint to be stored.
8. Run your presentation.
It’s always good to do a trial run to ensure that your slides are set up properly and your animations fire they way you expect them to.
To present your PowerPoint, go to the “Slide Show” tab and click “Play from Start”. The slide will cover your whole screen, blocking out your desktop and PowerPoint software. This is so your audience (in this case, you for the trial run) is solely focused on the visual elements of your presentation.
9. Advance the slides.
When you’re done with one slide and want to show the next in your sequence, click your mouse in presentation mode. This will advance the slide.

PowerPoint Style
1. Don’t let PowerPoint decide how you use PowerPoint.
Microsoft wanted to provide PowerPoint users with a lot of tools. But this does not mean you should use them all. Here are some key things to look out for:
Make sure that preset PPT themes complement your needs before you adopt them.
Try to get away from using Microsoft Office’s default fonts, Calibri and Cambria. Using these two typefaces can make the presentation seem underwhelming.
Professionals should never use PPT’s action sounds. (Please consider your audience above personal preference).
PowerPoint makes bulleting automatic, but ask yourself: Are bullets actually appropriate for what you need to do? Sometimes they are, but not always.
Recent PPT defaults include a small shadow on all shapes. Remove this shadow if it’s not actually needed. Also, don’t leave shapes in their default blue.
2. Create custom slide sizes.
While you usually can get away with the default slide size for most presentations, you may need to adjust it for larger presentations on weirdly sized displays. If you need to do that, here’s how.
In the top-left corner, choose “File.”
Select “Page Setup.”
Type the height and width of the background you’d like, and click “OK.”
A dialogue box will appear. Click “OK” again.
Your background is resized!
Tip: Resize your slides before you add any objects to them or the dimensions of your objects will become skewed.
3. Edit your slide template design.
Often, it’s much easier to edit your PowerPoint template before you start — this way, you don’t have design each slide by hand. Here’s how you do that.
Select “Themes” in the top navigation.
In the far right, click “Edit Master,” then “Slide Master.”
Make any changes you like, then click “Close Master.” All current and future slides in that presentation will use that template.
4. Write text with your audience in mind.
A significant part of a PowerPoint’s content is text. Great copy can make or break your presentation, so evaluating your written work from a few different angles could make you seem more persuasive. Thinking about how your text is received differentiates good presenters from the best.
Typography:
Many people underestimate the influence of typeface, but choosing the right font is important — the perception of your font type could influence your audience’s impression of you. The right font is an opportunity to convey consistent brand personality and professionalism.
Some fonts are seen as clean and professional, but this doesn’t mean they’re boring. A common mistake is thinking your font isn’t “exciting” enough, which could lead you to choose a font that distracts from your overall message.
Source: Workfront
That said, you can still use fun and eccentric fonts — in moderation. Offsetting a fun font or large letters with something more professional can create an engaging presentation. Above all, be sure you’re consistent so your presentation looks the same throughout each slide, so your audience doesn’t become distracted by too many disparate fonts.

5. Make sure all of your objects are properly aligned.
Having properly aligned objects on your slide is the key to making it look polished and professional. You can manually try to line up your images … but we all know how that typically works out. You’re trying to make sure all of your objects hang out in the middle of your slide, but when you drag them there, it still doesn’t look quite right. Get rid of your guessing game and let PowerPoint work its magic with this trick.
How to align multiple objects:
Select all objects by holding down “Shift” and clicking on all of them.
Select “Arrange” in the top options bar, then choose “Align or Distribute.”
Choose the type of alignment you’d like.
How to align objects to the slide:
Select all objects by holding down “Shift” and clicking on all of them.
Select “Arrange” in the top options bar, then choose “Align or Distribute.”
Select “Align to Slide.”
Select “Arrange” in the top options bar again, then choose “Align or Distribute.”
Choose the type of alignment you’d like.
PowerPoint Design
6. Use “Format Menus” to better control your objects’ designs.
Format menus allow you to do fine adjustments that otherwise seem impossible. To do this, right click on an object and select the “Format” option. Here, you can fine-tune shadows, adjust shape measurements, create reflections, and much more. The menu that will pop up looks like this:
Although the main options can be found on PowerPoint’s format toolbars, look for complete control in the format window menu. Other examples of options available include:
Adjusting text inside a shape.
Creating a natural perspective shadow behind an object.
Recoloring photos manually and with automatic options.
7. Take advantage of PowerPoint’s shapes.
Many users don’t realize how flexible PowerPoint’s shape tools have become. In combination with the expanded format options released by Microsoft in 2010, the potential for good design with shapes is readily available. PowerPoint provides the user with a bunch of great shape options beyond the traditional rectangle, oval, and rounded rectangle patterns, unlike even professional design programs like Adobe Creative Suite or Quark.
Today’s shapes include a highly functional Smart Shapes function, which enables you to create diagrams and flow charts in no time. These tools are especially valuable when you consider that PowerPoint is a visual medium. Paragraphing and bullet lists are boring — you can use shapes to help express your message more clearly.
8. Create custom shapes.
When you create a shape, right click and press “Edit Points.” By editing points, you can create custom shapes that fit your specific need. For instance, you can reshape arrows to fit the dimensions you like.
Another option is to combine two shapes together. When selecting two shapes, right-click and go to the “Grouping” sub-menu to see a variety of options.
Combine creates a custom shape that has overlapping portions of the two previous shapes cut out.
Union makes one completely merged shape.
Intersect builds a shape of only the overlapping sections of the two previous shapes.
Subtract cuts out the overlapping portion of one shape from the other.
By using these tools rather than trying to edit points precisely, you can create accurately measured custom shapes.
9. Crop images into custom shapes.
Besides creating custom shapes in your presentation, you can also use PowerPoint to crop existing images into new shapes. Here’s how you do that:
Click on the image and select “Format” in the options bar.
Choose “Crop,” then “Mask to Shape,” and then choose your desired shape. Ta-da! Custom-shaped photos.

10. Present websites within PowerPoint.
Tradition says that if you want to show a website in a PowerPoint, you should just create link to the page and prompt a browser to open. For PC users, there’s a better option.
Third party software that integrates fully into PowerPoint’s developer tab can be used to embed a website directly into your PowerPoint using a normal HTML iframe. One of the best tools is LiveWeb, a third-party software developed independently.
By using LiveWeb, you don’t have to interrupt your PowerPoint, and your presentation will remain fluid and natural. Whether you embed a whole webpage or just a YouTube video, this can be a high-quality third party improvement.
Unfortunately, Mac users don’t have a similar option. Agood second choice is to take screen shots of the website, link in through a browser, or embed media (such as a YouTube video) by downloading it directly to your computer.
11. Try Using GIFs.
GIFs are looped animated images used to communicate a mood, idea, information, and much more. Users add GIFs to Powerpoints to be funny or quickly demo a process. It’s easy to add GIFs to your slides. To do so, simply follow these steps:
Download and save the GIF you want.
Go to the slide you want the GIF on.
Go to the “Home” tab, and click either “Insert” or “Picture”.
From the “Picture” drop-down menu, choose “Picture from File”.
Navigate to where you saved your GIF and select it. Then, choose “Insert”.
To play the animated GIF, click the “Slide Show” tab and then “Play from Current Slide”.
PowerPoint Process
12. Keep it simple.
PowerPoint is an excellent tool to support your presentation with visual information, graphics, and supplemental points. This means that your powerpoint should not be your entire presentation. Your slides — no matter how creative and beautiful — shouldn’t be the star of the show. Keep your text and images clear and concise, using them only to supplement your message and authority.
If your slides have dense and cluttered information, it will both distract your audience and make it much more likely that you will lose their attention. Nothing in your slides should be superfluous! Keep your presentation persuasive by keeping it clean. There are a few ways to do this:
Limit bullet points and text.
Avoid paragraphs and long quotes.
Maintain “white space” or “negative space”.
Keep percentages, graphs, and data super basic.
13. Embed your font files.
One constant problem presenters have with PowerPoint is that fonts seem to change when presenters move from one computer to another. In reality, the fonts are not changing — the presentation computer just doesn’t have the same font files installed. If you’re using a PC and presenting on a PC, then there is a smooth work around for this issue. (When you involve Mac systems, the solution is a bit rougher. See Tip #11.)
Here’s the trick: When you save your PowerPoint file (only on a PC), you should click Save Options in the “Save As …” dialog window. Then, select the “Embed TrueType fonts” check box and press “OK.” Now, your presentation will keep the font file and your fonts will not change when you move computers (unless you give your presentation on a Mac).
14. Save your slides as JPEGs.
In PowerPoint for Mac 2011, there is no option to embed fonts within the presentation. So unless you use ubiquitous typefaces like Arial or Tahoma, your PPT is likely going to encounter font changeson different computers.
The most certain way of avoiding this is by saving your final presentation as JPEGs, and then inserting these JPEGs onto your slides. On a Mac, users can easily drag and drop the JPEGs into PPT with fast load time. If you do not use actions in your presentation, then this option works especially well.
If you want your presentation to appear “animated,” you’ll need to do a little tinkering. All you need to do is save JPEGs of each “frame” of the animation. Then, in your final presentation, you’ll just display those JPEGs in the order you’d like the animation to appear. While you’ll technically have several new slides in place of one original one, your audience won’t know the difference.
An important consideration: If your PPT includes a lot of JPEGs, then the file size will increase.
15. Embed multimedia.
PowerPoint allows you to either link to video/audio files externally or to embed the media directly in your presentation. You should embed these files if you can, but if you use a Mac, you cannot actually embed the video (see note below). For PCs, two great reasons for embedding are:
Embedding allows you to play media directly in your presentation. It will look much more professional than switching between windows.
Embedding also means that the file stays within the PowerPoint presentation, so it should play normally without extra work (except on a Mac).
Note: Mac OS users of PowerPoint should be extra careful about using multimedia files.
If you use PowerPoint for Mac, then you will always need to bring the video and/or audio file with you in the same folder as the PowerPoint presentation. It’s best to only insert video or audio files once the presentation and the containing folder have been saved on a portable drive in their permanent folder. Also, if the presentation will be played on a Windows computer, then Mac users need to make sure their multimedia files are in WMV format. This tip gets a bit complicated, so if you want to use PowerPoint effectively, consider using the same operating system for designing andpresenting, no matter what.
16. Bring your own hardware.
Between operating systems, PowerPoint is still a bit jumpy. Even between differing PPT versions, things can change. One way to fix these problems is to make sure that you have the right hardware — so just bring along your own laptop when you’re presenting.
17. Use “Presenter View.”
In most presentation situations, there will be both a presenter’s screen and the main projected display for your presentation. PowerPoint has a great tool called Presenter View, which can be found in the “Slide Show” tab of PowerPoint 2010 (or 2011 for Mac). Included in the Presenter View is an area for notes, a timer/clock, and a presentation display.
For many presenters, this tool can help unify their spoken presentation and their visual aid. You never want to make the PowerPoint seem like a stack of notes that you use a crutch. Use the Presenter View option to help create a more natural presentation.
Pro Tip: At the start of the presentation, you should also hit CTRL + H to make the cursor disappear. Hitting the “A” key will bring it back if you need it!
With style, design, and presentation processes under your belt, you can do a lot more with PowerPoint than just presentations for your clients. PowerPoint and similar slide applications are flexible tools that should not be forgotten. With a great template, you can be on your way to creating presentations that wow your audience.

How To Create An Iphone Or Ipad Apps And Games Succeed In App Store!
Buy Now
$ 63,896.21 USD last month?
Looks impressive? I bet it does!
But now, let me tell you the ugly truth.
It looks like I am raking in money now, but the truth is that it was not always like that! Just 6 months ago I was completely struggling. I had no programming skills, no team and no money. The only thing I had was a great desire to create the game of my dreams.
Since childhood, I always had a dream to make it big. I was thinking my game over and over again and again during the sleepless nights, imagining the characters and heroes, levels, gameplay tricks… etc.
Does that sound familiar to you?
To be honest, I am a big fan of the iPhone, so I did not even consider the idea of creating games for anything else but the iPhone or iPad.
But I was missing the main thing – I had no team and no programming skills at all. Even worse – I did not even have a technical education!
Over and over again I have been reading the blogs and reports about the Gold Rush in the Apps Store where small guys like you and me achieved immense success by creating simple but great applications or games!
Did you know that guys from the Top Applications part of the App Store are selling over 35,000 copies a day!
35 thousand!
If you sell your app for $0.99 and get $0.70 from it after all apple commission cuts you are left with pure profit of $24,500 USD per DAY! Well, you can’t live with that but that is a good start, isn’t it 🙂
This thought would not let me sleep well. Of course I did not live in the illusion that I would get on top with my first app but you know me already – I am a kind of guy who always wants to reach the stars!
So my target was to get into the Top100 Apps at least.
Here is what I did. I decided to take it really seriously. First, I bought all the books available in my local Barnes&Noble store and on Amazon as well. Everything from Iphone Development for dummies to the advanced experts-stuff.
Oh boy, that was a real head ache to read all that stuff. It took me about 3 months alone to read all those books.
And you know what?
After I tried to implement the knowledge I was totally disappointed – most of the printed books turned out to be completely outdated. You know it is a long process after you write a book, it goes to the publisher, stays in editing for weeks, then the printing office keeps delaying it again and again. Then you need to distribute it throughout the country to local shops etc.. And the things change so fast. Once iPod was released, next year iPhone, then iPhone3GS, then iPad, then iPhone4, iPad2, iPhone 4S, iPhone 5… the list goes on and on. Things change so fast and these printed books can’t even catch up. Most samples were outdated and never worked for me. What a bummer.
So finally after reading all this crap my head was ready to explode and I decided to take action. My first game was supposed to be the simple “Hidden object” game –you know where you tap the screen to find the hidden objects. I found out that these kind of games are very popular among people and I figured out it is pretty easy to make it – you simply need several images properly cut into layers and a little bit of coding.
Getting a developer account with Apple was pretty easy, so I went ahead and opened it and started the development.
Since I had no one to help and guide me – I guess I spent 3 times longer than average creating it than I actually needed to. In about 2 months of sleepless nights my game was finally ready. The approval process from apple took about a week. This week of waiting was the most frustrating time for me, it felt like time itself stopped… I got so nervous my hands even shook. What if they disapproved of it? I have read tons of horror stories about developers failing because Apple did not accept their game or delayed approval for months. I could not even sleep. I was checking my email and Dev account every minute to see the desired “your App was approved” message from Apple. I was so noxious I even sent 3 followup emails asking apple why it takes so long. Don’t do that guys, I heard you only make the reviewers angry if you display impatience!
Finally I got approved and the sales started! I went to bed dreaming about loads of cash rushing into my pockets.
And can you imagine what happened?
I failed miserably!
The next day, when I checked my sales, I saw the devastating numbers – 16 copies sold. Total net profit: $9 … Well, obviously not the kind of numbers I was expecting…
Next day – 11 copies, then 8 copies, then about 2-3 copies per day during the next week. After 2 weeks my total net profit was around 50 bucks.. Sounds like now I have enough money to invite my girlfriend to McDonalds, right… what an epic failure.
And here is why.
Creating a great app or game is only part of the story. The most important part is how to sell it successfully and get on top of apps store sales. That’s what most developers are missing, failing one after another in their efforts to live their dream. They put all their efforts into the development and miss the most important part – successful marketing! Even the best app can remain totally unknown if you fail to market it properly.
Once I realized this, I decided not to give up. So I spent the next 6 months making the comprehensive market research. I contacted 135 top apple apps and games developers asking for help and advice. As you may expect, 90% of them simply ignored me. But you know I am not kind of guy who gives up easily.
Those 10% who replied gave me knowledge you’d never find in books or on the internet.
I could personally meet some of them and receive the most valuable insider information on how this market works. Oh you can’t imagine how it turned my worldview upside down. Nearly everything I learned before…
…was wrong.
That’s how top developers keep the information from small guys like you and me so they can rake in money, while we can’t even sell 10 copies! Did you know there is a list of elite developers who get fast approvals, premium placing in “What we are playing” and other top ratings & benefits?
All this information is well kept secret from us…
… so no surprise thousands and thousands of new developers who enter the market fail one after another. While you get confused reading and learning hundreds of ways of advertising your app – these guys use only a couple of ways that really work and don’t even waste their time on others…
Where to advertise the app? How to get traffic to the page? Should I order paid reviews or not? Should I create blogs? Do I need to make support forums for my game? Should I make my app free and earn money only by selling Ads inside, or is it better to get rid of ads and sell the app itself? All these questions could leave the newbie developer totally confused and as a result – on the road to total failure in achieving success in the apple store.
Let me tell you this.
Like Tony Robbins once said “Become the best by modeling the best”. Find out what the best developers do and mimic their techniques, use their secrets and tricks and you will become successful. Don’t try to re-invent the wheel. Use what is already working! Don’t spread out efforts on useless stuff that takes up your time but never brings results.
And you know it already – you’ve seen the proof before. Once I started implementing these ideas my sales started to go up and up. Literally, through the roof. Now my girlfriend and I are even thinking on opening our own McDonalds on the franchise next year on a $506,000 investment and 45k/year franchise fee so we can secure my profits in some real offline business. Well.. Ok ..maybe mcdonalds sounds too crazy, but if not McDonalds, I can predict we’ll buy some luxury apartment on the California coast for sure.
But after all that, I still realize that I owe my success to the few generous people among the top developers who decided not to ignore me and help me out by sharing their valuable knowledge with me. Without it, nothing could be possible.
That’s why I decided to gather all my knowledge and resources and put up a comprehensive course on iPhone and iPad development secrets.
My main goal was to make a full multimedia course that I can easily update on a monthly basis instead of writing the boring printed book that will become outdated even before it comes on the store shelf.
Secondly I wanted to make my course really newbie friendly. The arrogant expert authors are so proud of themselves that they don’t even bother to explain the details for people who are just starting out and don’t have any programming knowledge at all. They all assume you are at least expert in C++ before you start learning XCode and other iphone development stuff.
I decided to change this approach completely. You know I had no programming skills at all when I started out so I don’t expect you to know anything about programming. You don’t have to have any technical knowledge. If you can operate your iPhone and basic computer software – that’s all we need to start.
What does that mean to you? Well it means that you won’t have to spend 12 months and tens of thousands of dollars figuring this out like I did. More importantly, it means…
… you can start creating your own app or game today and making money with it tomorrow.
Here is what my course is all about.
During the 4 weeks, I am going to take you by the hand and follow through the whole process of creating your first app or game. I promise – we’ll do it the easy and fun way. No boring theories, no hard core programming, no useless stuff. Only practical information and step by step instructions!
Here is what we are going to cover in the first week.
Like I mentioned before, I don’t expect you to be an expert right of the bat, so first of all we are going to cover the great variety of basic information on how to start and apply yourself in different areas of game and application development: from creating your first “Hello World” application, to developing your first game with Cocos 2d toolkit. Did you know that Cocos 2d is considered one of the easiest ways of creating good Apps and will be the most used toolkit next year?
You will also discover how to create your first web using iWebKit and animated application using Adobe Flash CS5. We’ll also discu ss how to debug your application and get rid of the bugs so you have all the knowledge necessary to dive into more in-depth information over the following weeks. And like I said – it’ll be painless – we’ll do it the easy and fun way.
In Weeks 2&3 you will discover different iPhone development tools starting from simple Xcode to more advanced stuff like Cocos 2d & iWebKit secrets & tricks. Let me warn you – even if this may sound complicated – I put my information, tutorials and samples in such an easily understood manner that you can feel yourself becoming an expert even if you are a total newbie!
We are also going to learn the 2d and 3d editing software for game and app development and some sort of “cheat”-kinds of software & tricks – for those of you who want to use advanced stuff without wasting months on learning it. That’s why I call it “The lazy person’s guide to success” – I just give what you really need and don’t waste your time describing stuff you will never use!
As a result of week 3 you will have your first game or application ready to go!
In the final week we are going to cover the most important part of the story – how to market your game and finally make money by selling it in the App Store. Time to get the money rolling 🙂 Let’s be honest with each other – after all, you want to make good bucks with it, don’t you? I have prepared a lot of good, fresh, updated stuff on how to market your game, and where to get the dirt cheap targeted traffic!
We’ll also cover the most recent trends in game development – what genres are popular now and in the next year, what are the best converting ways to promote the game today and next year.

Law Firm Video SEO: How To Rank Videos on Page 1 (2019)
Ok so we’re making this distinctive tutorial for the Esteemed attorneys america. That is an distinguished tutorial, you won’t to find this any location else, that is an exact real step by step how you can make a video for high degree key phrase phrases, in the industries which are very competitive, together with undoubtedly the legal professionals. So whether or not you wish to have to write down for DUI lawyer in you metropolis, or individual damage or something distinct self-discipline you are taking with regards to being a legal professional; that you could actually generate leads proper away. On this video we are absolutely going to show you easy methods to do it in not up to ten minutes. So i have without a doubt broke it down into 5 unique predominant steps. First thing you must do if you happen to do not have already got Wirecast for Youtube; simply Google it, that you may truely purchase it on their internet site, they have a free trial. And it is a $500 product at this point. However it is more than worth it, we definitely show you that on this tutorial exactly how you can generate profits with it right away, and why a small $500 investment may be very genuinely valued at it, and which you can really producing money in there as good and that is lovely fast so.Once we have Wirecast downloaded and established on our laptop, the following factor we want to do is go to Youtube, log into your channel. As soon as you might be logged in, go to creative studio. In ingenious studio what you wish to have to do is click on on are living streaming. When you’ve got not ever streamed an excellent earlier than this is a dummy channel without doubt. Click on on movements, you’ll have got to enable live flow. To enable are living flow you’re going to have to get an automated call from Google. So i am going to move ahead and affirm. I’ll pause this. Ok so we just acquired the reside mobile call from Google, they give you as six digit code, put the code in, your channel is validated. So you hit continue, the subsequent factor you have got to do is go forward and create a reside occasion. When you create a are living occasion, the encoding of the software via Wirecast is without doubt one of the predominant approaches it ranks the video, but also the title of the video is definitely what we relatively want distinct in the direction of out keyword phrases. Let’s say we need to rank for quality DUI attorney. And i will prefer a metropolis and state mixture right here that’s nearby to me. I’m in primary Florida so i will say, DUI lawyer Valrico, which is suburb of Tampa. I need to put my mobile quantity in here because there are men and women who just see the mobile quantity, make a speedy choice to offer me a name than clearly watch the video. So having it within the title is just as main, since it in reality indicates up on Google, you’ve got your telephone number proper there on the front page. I like to goal, and that i advise you to target two key terms per video. So we are going to do satisfactory DUI legal professional Valrico, then i will selected yet another suburb, then we will say top private injury legal professional, and we will chose one more suburb, we will be able to say Seffner, which is not too a long way from right here as good. We wish to selected the occasion to begin about half-hour after we’re doing the occasion. And proper right here it is about 11 o’clock my time almost. And so i’m going to move ahead and put in the occasion for about eleven.30.I want to make sure we hit custom encoding. Description and tags we are able to go back to afterward. That’s not a tremendous of a deal. Probably the most primary importances is location. So we chose Valrico and Seffner, they’re right next to one another, so we will be able to prefer Valrico underneath video place, hit search, Google finds it, now we preserve that in there. We wish the language to be English, and all this different stuff we will go away that how it is. We can go forward and hit create events. Now it creates the event, we have now the opportunity to chose a thumb nail right away. It is form of principal seeing that the video does rank proper away about ninety five% of the time. Thumb nail for this video, hope you do not mind penguins being your emblem. At the same time that’s doing that we are going to selected a customized ingestion. Takes a 2d to load there. We are going to pick the flow, we don’t have any streams so we are going to create a movement.Let’s simply call this Wirecast. And we need to be in 480p. So we hit shop changes opt for encoder Wirecast for Youtube, we’re choosing our string, whe are choosing Wirecast as our encoder, now we want to go ahead and hit store alterations. Occasion saved effectually, so we are going to go ahead and go to the are living manipulate room. Right now we’re not receiving any data from our encoder. We’ve got completed the whole thing you have got to do on our finish here on YouTube, So what we want to do next is go to Wirecast. This is the application that we have now downloaded. First thing you wish to have to to do is go forward and import media. Single file, import media and that is what is going to permit you to choose the video you want to rank for. Now without doubt i am doing this for an illustration, so i’ll just chose a video from my computer, then we hit output, and output settings. Now what it will do is pull up a window, which we must hit authenticate, so as to connect the software to our Youtube account. That manner it might encode the video. So we’ve that authenticate button, robotically opens a tab, And it says Wirecast would like to manipulate your Youtube account; we wish to enable that. After we do it comes proper back to the software. At that point — routinely you might get an error code that pops up and that’s okay. Well, there we go, now it pulls up surely as your Youtube related to the program. We need to ensure the occasion is the one we need to chose, we most effective have one on this account, so it mechanically pops up.But you probably have more than one events you definitely wish to go and investigate and ensure the video you need to create a live event for correct now. So we hit okay. Now the software is competent to go clearly. Simply to recap, don’t forget file, import media, the video indicates up down here, go to output, output settings and that is the way you authenticate your Youtube account, join the program to Youtube. Now at this point this is competent to go, as quickly as we hit this circulation button it’s going to encoding the video to Youtube. However first, what we must do is we must return to Youtube, and we wish to connect the program in the precise are living occasion. So first we hit movement, now Youtube will to select up the software. There we go, and hit preview. My didn’t add that. Fresh, though already did. Picked it up routinely. Preview, it will ask you are you sure to preview that, you say sure. Then at that factor goes to begin tracking whether the move is good, the well being popularity of it, that is good.It is continuously good on the starting. At that factor we want to go forward and begin reside streaming the video. It takes a 2d for Youtube to move ahead and prep the video for are living steam. So while that’s happening, k it is happening faster than I proposal, excellent. So go forward and hit start live steaming, we want to go forward and are living streaming the occasion. Now remember, we selected it to be half-hour forward of time. So we’ve got plenty forward and return in and edit the video anyway. So that’s not a video, it can be already streaming right here, so technically that is already taking part in continue to exist Youtube, but it surely is not going to absolutely host for an extra 30 minutes so we have time. Now what we do is go ahead and hit the video, And i’m going to pause it and you are going to hear the video playing. Some of the negatives of live streaming an event whilst you encode it with Wirecast, or another program, or in case you just do it straight through Youtube, either method you might be nonetheless going to have the video playing at the same time streaming. So you’ll wish to make sure there is no noise within the historical past, you are additionally going to preserve in mind the video goes to play, you are going to hear the quantity given that it is reside streaming out of your laptop. So i am going to move ahead and click on play on this. I do advise before I hit play, I wish to assist you to know, I endorse that I play at least two or thrice via. I recommend thrice by means of from the commencing on account that frequently it’s going to take in a number of CPU in your computer, a number of computer usage. So in the high nook here you are going to see CPU utilization and it says 29%, it is absolutely going to head as much as 90-ninety five% for a majority of the video. So one of the video would possibly not encode properly unless you might have a dedicated server for this.So that is one of the negatives of it. However for those who let it play via two or three times, then you could in reality go by means of and edit it. I’ll exhibit you how to try this right here in a 2d. So i’m going to move ahead and hit play and let this video encode, that method you could virtually see a real reside ranking on this demo. I will be back in about five minutes. K so we are simply still live streaming right here. I wish to touch upon one thing before it’s finished are living steaming. Surely this is an instance so we’re not too concerned about this video. But I wanted to exhibit you right here for the period of the are living steam, it will happen, it’ll say the backup move is bad, it is going to say matters will not be watching good. What we’re looking for is where it says the wellbeing is good correct right here. Then throughout the time it will say bad, good, dangerous, good depending on the CPU of your pc. It’s not that enormous of a deal, and additionally it is why we document the video two or 3 times over. Meaning you let it run, a two minute video, this one has been reside streaming for over six minutes, seeing that i’m going to let it run three times by means of. I’m going to move through and edit it on the end. So, k so we simply hit movement and that virtually turned off the are living steaming. Going to hit clean shot to discontinue the video from enjoying, so it’s not continuously taking part in in the historical past of your pc. Then from there in Youtube we are going to hit stop streaming, it’ll immediate us, we say okay, it stops steaming. From there’s must automatically go to our video supervisor. So we click on on that and video will pop up in our video manager right here. You’ll find it’s nonetheless processing. It does take about 5 or ten minutes to system, depending on the size of video, then at that point we will click edit, and that’s after we go in and edit the video. That method if it indicates up thrice we are able to reduce out the first-rate components and the worst ingredients, and make the video as high best as feasible. For the time being, what we are going to do is click on the video while it’s nonetheless uploading. And what we will do is i’ll virtually show how this video, even as it is still processing clearly, adn we can not even play the video, it’s still survive Youtube. And these movies when encoded like this, and honestly optimised with a title, with out even hanging in tags, without even putting in an outline at all, due to the fact that’s now not even uploaded yet.So in Google we are able to definitely see how this video goes to exhibit up for the terms we’re targeting. The 2 key words DUI legal professional Valrico suggests up on the entrance page. As you will find it says uploaded ten minutes ago. We return to Youtube, this factor just isn’t even accomplished processing but. I are not able to even go in and edit this video, and i am already on on the front page of Google. For a high stage turn that is–

Digital immortality: How your life’s data means a version of you could live forever
Hossein Rahnama is aware of a CEO of a significant monetary firm who needs to stay on after he’s useless, and Rahnama thinks he may also help him do it.
Rahnama is making a digital avatar for the CEO that they each hope may function a digital “guide” when the precise CEO is gone. Some future firm government deciding whether or not to simply accept an acquisition bid may pull out her mobile phone, open a chat window, and pose the query to the late CEO. The digital avatar, created by an artificial-intelligence platform that analyzes private knowledge and correspondence, may detect that the CEO had a nasty relationship with the buying firm’s execs. “I’m not a fan of that firm’s management,” the avatar may say, and the display would go purple to point disapproval.
Creepy? Possibly, however Rahnama believes we’ll come to embrace the digital afterlife. An entrepreneur and researcher primarily based at Ryerson College in Toronto, and a visiting school member at MIT’s Media Lab, he’s constructing an software known as Augmented Eternity; it permits you to create a digital persona that may work together with folks in your behalf after you’re useless.
Whereas most older folks haven’t amassed sufficient digital detritus to construct a working synthetic intelligence, Rahnama posits that within the subsequent few a long time, as we proceed to create our digital footprints, millennials may have generated sufficient knowledge to make it possible. Whilst we communicate, the digital stays of the useless accumulate. One thing like 1.7 million Fb customers go away annually. Some on-line accounts of the useless are deleted, whereas others linger in perpetual silence. “We’re producing gigabytes of information each day,” Rahnama says. “We now have plenty of knowledge, we’ve plenty of processing energy, we’ve plenty of storage functionality.” With sufficient knowledge about the way you talk and work together with others, machine-learning algorithms can approximate your distinctive character—or not less than some a part of it.
And what would the digital “you” appear like? Properly, what would you like it to appear like? It may be a text-based chatbot just like the CEO’s or an audio voice like Siri or a digitally edited video or a Three-D animated character in a virtual-reality surroundings. It may be embedded in a humanoid robotic.
Twenty thousand personalities without delay We’re not there fairly but. It’s laborious sufficient to create software program brokers that may stick with it a natural-sounding dialog, not to mention seize the character of a particular particular person. There’s no software program that may work together, talk, and make selections the way in which you do. Rahnama says the CEO’s avatar will likely be a “choice help software,” but it surely received’t be able to working the corporate.
“There’s one factor that’s lacking in AI right now, and that’s context,” he says. Most chatbots merely provide responses primarily based on the content material of a dialog, however our communication adjustments relying on who we’re speaking to, the place we’re, and what time of day it’s. The necessity to embrace this sort of context was the premise for Rahnama’s firm, Flybits (for which he was named one in every of this publication’s 35 Innovators Below 35 in 2012). Flybits supplies a platform that lets firms tailor their communications to prospects on the premise of contextual cues. A financial institution, for instance, may provide completely different messages by way of its cell app relying in your buy historical past, your calendar schedule, or whether or not you’re strolling or taking a prepare.
Creepy? Possibly, however Rahnama believes we’ll all come to embrace the digital afterlife.
The contextual half was one thing Rahnama discovered helpful when he began Augmented Eternity. In the event you’re going to assemble a digital self, it’s not sufficient to know that anyone mentioned one thing. It’s important to know the context through which it was mentioned—was the particular person joking? Irritated? Reacting to right now’s information? These similar sorts of clues find yourself being essential when piecing collectively a digital character, which is why the Augmented Eternity platform takes knowledge from a number of sources—Fb, Twitter, messaging apps, and others—and analyzes it for context, emotional content material, and semantics.
Hossein Rahnama
An analogous idea grabbed headlines a couple of years in the past when Russian software program developer Eugenia Kuyda created a chatbot illustration of her finest good friend, Roman Mazurenko, who died in late 2015. Kuyda made the bot by plugging Mazurenko’s private messages with family and friends right into a neural community constructed with Google’s open-source machine-learning framework, TensorFlow. The bot was, by Kuyda’s personal admission, not very exact or polished, however when it answered questions, it usually sounded uncannily like her good friend.
Kuyda says the principle complication with making an attempt to create digital variations of the useless is that individuals are sophisticated. “We’re extraordinarily completely different after we discuss to completely different folks,” she says. “We’re mainly like twenty thousand personalities without delay.” For instance, Mazurenko had mentioned issues to her that he may need ignored of a dialog along with his mother and father. She may seek the advice of along with his household and different pals to determine which data was too delicate to share. May any firm realistically do the identical?
Rahnama clearly thinks so. He says Augmented Eternity will take a step towards accommodating varied personalities by tailoring the dialog in accordance with context and letting customers management what knowledge is accessible to whom. So sometime his daughter may seek the advice of along with his digital household persona, whereas a former scholar may ask questions of his tutorial persona. He sees it as a method of leaving a legacy—a strategy to maintain contributing to society as a substitute of fading to black.
It’s not only for the useless However a digital avatar may additionally come in useful even while you’re nonetheless round. AI may assist remodel your skilled experience from a scattered written report to a illustration of your data that folks can work together with. A lawyer who expenses a whole lot of an hour may let folks seek the advice of a digital avatar as a substitute, for a a lot lower cost. Celebrities, politicians, and different public figures may outsource a few of their public interplay to digital variations of themselves. AI would permit us to seek the advice of specialists with whom we’d by no means be capable to meet in actual life. The flexibility to signify and share experience, Rahnama says, “can truly contribute to new enterprise fashions on the web.” Reasonably than talking with a generic Siri or Alexa, you would ask an eminent scientist, a politician, or a coworker. And why attend a enterprise assembly when you would ship your avatar?
One other startup, Eternime, primarily based in Mountain View, California, provides to include your private data into “an clever avatar that appears such as you” and that can “stay ceaselessly and permit different folks sooner or later to entry your recollections.” Its founder, Marius Ursache, has been selling the thought for years, and greater than 40,000 folks have signed as much as Eternime’s ready record, however the self-funded firm has nonetheless launched solely restricted beta variations. Ursache thinks the issue is much less technical than behavioral: “Individuals don’t make investments a lot time in actions that can repay in a long time,” he says.
Whether or not or not it takes off as a enterprise, Rahnama hopes Augmented Eternity will begin conversations about privateness and knowledge possession. “The rationale I like this analysis challenge is that it addresses plenty of key moral questions round knowledge science and AI,” he says. “Like, who’s going to personal my data after I go away?”
In a paper printed in Nature Human Habits earlier this yr, ethicists Carl Öhman and Luciano Floridi from the Oxford Web Institute argue that we’d like an moral framework for the burgeoning digital afterlife business. Ought to we deal with digital stays by the identical code that museums use for human stays? Doing so would severely restrict the methods through which firms can use (or exploit) our knowledge. If digital stays are like “the informational corpse of the deceased,” they write, they “will not be used solely as a way to an finish, similar to revenue, however regarded as a substitute as an entity holding an inherent worth.”
Maintain a black mirror as much as nature Nearly each dialogue of the digital afterlife, Öhman factors out, mentions “Be Proper Again,” an episode of the British present Black Mirror, through which a bereaved younger widow interacts with a digital avatar of her late husband. Over the course of the episode, she progresses from sending a couple of hesitant texts to a chatbot to buying a lifelike robotic in her husband’s picture.
What’s usually missed in discussions in regards to the present is the position of the corporate that created the avatar. In actual life, Öhman says, we needs to be skeptical of such firms. The facility of the digital useless to govern the dwelling is big; who higher to promote us a product than somebody we’ve liked and misplaced? Thus our digital representations may be extra talkative, pushy, and flattering than we’re—and if that’s what their makers suppose is finest, who’s going to cease them?
Within the Black Mirror episode, the avatar periodically elicits extra of the useless husband’s knowledge and upsells his widow on dearer representations of him, till it turns into so lifelike that she will’t “kill” it. The rhetoric round immortal digital selves focuses on our need to be remembered. However wouldn’t most of us need our family members to have the ability to allow us to go?

Searching deep and dark: Building a Google for the less visible parts of the web
by Christian Mattmann
In today’s data-rich world, companies, governments and individuals want to analyze anything and everything they can get their hands on – and the World Wide Web has loads of information. At present, the most easily indexed material from the web is text. But as much as 89 to 96 percent of the content on the internet is actually something else – images, video, audio, in all thousands of different kinds of nontextual data types.
Further, the vast majority of online content isn’t available in a form that’s easily indexed by electronic archiving systems like Google’s. Rather, it requires a user to log in, or it is provided dynamically by a program running when a user visits the page. If we’re going to catalog online human knowledge, we need to be sure we can get to and recognize all of it, and that we can do so automatically.
How can we teach computers to recognize, index and search all the different types of material that’s available online? Thanks to federal efforts in the global fight against human trafficking and weapons dealing, my research forms the basis for a new tool that can help with this effort.
Understanding what’s deep
The “deep web” and the “dark web” are often discussed in the context of scary news or films like “Deep Web,” in which young and intelligent criminals are getting away with illicit activities such as drug dealing and human trafficking – or even worse. But what do these terms mean?
The “deep web” has existed ever since businesses and organizations, including universities, put large databases online in ways people could not directly view. Rather than allowing anyone to get students’ phone numbers and email addresses, for example, many universities require people to log in as members of the campus community before searching online directories for contact information. Online services such as Dropbox and Gmail are publicly accessible and part of the World Wide Web – but indexing a user’s files and emails on these sites does require an individual login, which our project does not get involved with.
The “surface web” is the online world we can see – shopping sites, businesses’ information pages, news organizations and so on. The “deep web” is closely related, but less visible, to human users and – in some ways more importantly – to search engines exploring the web to catalog it. I tend to describe the “deep web” as those parts of the public internet that:
Require a user to first fill out a login form,
Involve dynamic content like AJAX or Javascript, or
Present images, video and other information in ways that aren’t typically indexed properly by search services.
What’s dark?
The “dark web,” by contrast, are pages – some of which may also have “deep web” elements – that are hosted by web servers using the anonymous web protocol called Tor. Originally developed by U.S. Defense Department researchers to secure sensitive information, Tor was released into the public domain in 2004.
Like many secure systems such as the WhatsApp messaging app, its original purpose was for good, but has also been used by criminals hiding behind the system’s anonymity. Some people run Tor sites handling illicit activity, such as drug trafficking, weapons and human trafficking and even murder for hire.
The U.S. government has been interested in trying to find ways to use modern information technology and computer science to combat these criminal activities. In 2014, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (more commonly known as DARPA), a part of the Defense Department, launched a program called Memex to fight human trafficking with these tools.
Specifically, Memex wanted to create a search index that would help law enforcement identify human trafficking operations online – in particular by mining the deep and dark web. One of the key systems used by the project’s teams of scholars, government workers and industry experts was one I helped develop, called Apache Tika.
The ‘digital Babel fish’
Tika is often referred to as the “digital Babel fish,” a play on a creature called the “Babel fish” in the “Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” book series. Once inserted into a person’s ear, the Babel fish allowed her to understand any language spoken. Tika lets users understand any file and the information contained within it.
When Tika examines a file, it automatically identifies what kind of file it is – such as a photo, video or audio. It does this with a curated taxonomy of information about files: their name, their extension, a sort of “digital fingerprint. When it encounters a file whose name ends in ”.MP4,“ for example, Tika assumes it’s a video file stored in the MPEG-4 format. By directly analyzing the data in the file, Tika can confirm or refute that assumption – all video, audio, image and other files must begin with specific codes saying what format their data is stored in.
Once a file’s type is identified, Tika uses specific tools to extract its content such as Apache PDFBox for PDF files, or Tesseract for capturing text from images. In addition to content, other forensic information or "metadata” is captured including the file’s creation date, who edited it last, and what language the file is authored in.
From there, Tika uses advanced techniques like Named Entity Recognition (NER) to further analyze the text. NER identifies proper nouns and sentence structure, and then fits this information to databases of people, places and things, identifying not just whom the text is talking about, but where, and why they are doing it. This technique helped Tika to automatically identify offshore shell corporations (the things); where they were located; and who (people) was storing their money in them as part of the Panama Papers scandal that exposed financial corruption among global political, societal and technical leaders.
Tika extracting information from images of weapons curated from the deep and dark web. Stolen weapons are classified automatically for further follow-up.
Identifying illegal activity
Improvements to Tika during the Memex project made it even better at handling multimedia and other content found on the deep and dark web. Now Tika can process and identify images with common human trafficking themes. For example, it can automatically process and analyze text in images – a victim alias or an indication about how to contact them – and certain types of image properties – such as camera lighting. In some images and videos, Tika can identify the people, places and things that appear.
Additional software can help Tika find automatic weapons and identify a weapon’s serial number. That can help to track down whether it is stolen or not.
Employing Tika to monitor the deep and dark web continuously could help identify human- and weapons-trafficking situations shortly after the photos are posted online. That could stop a crime from occurring and save lives.
Memex is not yet powerful enough to handle all of the content that’s out there, nor to comprehensively assist law enforcement, contribute to humanitarian efforts to stop human trafficking and even interact with commercial search engines.
It will take more work, but we’re making it easier to achieve those goals. Tika and related software packages are part of an open source software library available on DARPA’s Open Catalog to anyone – in law enforcement, the intelligence community or the public at large – who wants to shine a light into the deep and the dark.

Three Steps to Successful DevOps
On a recent Voices in Innovation podcast, GigaOm’s VP of Research Jon Collins talked to Harbinder Kang, Global Head of Developer Operations at Finastra, about how to implement DevOps successfully in any organization. Harbinder outlined some fantastic tips based on his experiences working with global organizations and outlined an easy-to-follow three-step process for those just starting on their DevOps journey.
Below is a transcript of their conversation, edited for brevity and clarity, including all of Harbinder’s hints and recommendations:
Jon: Hi Harbinder, thanks for taking the time to chat with me today. What were your early experiences of development and how did you move to become an expert in DevOps?
Harbinder: I started out working at a startup in the fintech space with 50 people, selling enterprise software. At a startup you find yourself being thrown around trying different things: customer support, QA, build development, going on-site, and all the rest.
I found myself gravitating towards the whole build engineering release space before people called it DevOps. The project at the time had an Adhoc build Perl script, and we never had it working properly at any given time. And then I just decided to put continuous integration into place. So, I implemented Cruise Control over a weekend and brought CI to the project. I did a lot of projects after that. It kind of snowballed.
Along the way, I found myself in other areas of the delivery process: test automation, test strategies, understanding what it means to work within both a waterfall methodology and an Agile methodology. This leads to where I am now, being able to look at DevOps holistically for projects and understanding what it takes and what the business wants when it comes to transforming. Recently I’ve been working on Operational performance of production and what that means in the DevOps space, and the engineering practices it takes to make highly available software.
Jon: You stand on one side of the development process, asking ‘how can we make this better’?
Harbinder: Yeah, and I’ve learned to work with stakeholders beyond the development group: the R & D group and the operations group also. Where I am now, for example, implementing
continuous delivery practices, you need to work with the larger enterprise, you need to work with heavyweight processes and controls, you want to be able to push to production on a daily basis. You can’t ignore those elements of the organization. Today, although it’s far more holistic with the teams I work with to achieve those goals, it’s still essentially the same process.
Jon: Where do you start and what do you see as the key elements of pain your organization still faces?
Harbinder: The approach I like to take is a holistic view first. In my role now I’m more top-down at least to start with. I use two tools for this:
The Metrics You Find in the State of DevOps Report
DevOps Research and Assessment (DORA) metrics allow me to have a very balanced conversation with both engineering and the business. It puts tension at the right points between throughput and stability.
So you can have a discussion with development, and they’ll be asking for a build that runs in nanoseconds. Then you could talk to a change approval team: they want change approval boards and they’ll make you wait a week before you push into production because it’s all about stability.
Using these metrics helps the business understand what it actually wants to do and helps to focus on system-level outcomes. If you don’t do that I’ve found you can fall into common pitfalls: you can use metrics that optimise locally, at the cost of an overall outcome, and they don’t end up linking back to business outcomes. I’ve found it a good framework to use as the foundation for improvement.
Value Stream Maps
They allow us to take a step back, forget the technology, the process and the people for a second, and just map out what’s going on and discover what the set of constraints are that are actually affecting us, rather than anecdotally what we feel may be the case.
We begin to pick up where the biggest waste exists and it may not necessarily be where stakeholders ask you to focus.
It will also break a siloed approach to thinking, because by necessity you are going to different stakeholders across the value stream and getting different versions of the value stream. You then put it all together into a consistent view.
From there we get into: “This is where we are, what do we want to do?”:
Is this long-lived software where we just look to optimise margins and profitability and productivity, where there is no goal to change the software architecture investment, where we are optimizing and the technical debt isn’t going to change?
Or is it a new project, where the organization has aspirations for growth, there is ideation, and the organization wants internet scale, continuous delivery and the system to be available at all times.
In the middle, you’ve got products that have been successful in one model, typically software that was sold in a licencing situation and the client has an aspiration of moving it across into a managed service and that’s a really interesting challenge at that point.
I’ve found using this framework allows me to attack all three of these problems.
In DevOps, there’s a set of constraints you need to be aware of, within what you need to do, and it’s not always in your hands in terms of the outcomes the business wants. For example, you can throw all the DevOps tooling and automation at a product, but if it’s a very lumpy, heavily customized product, there’s only so far you’re going to get in operational performance if you’re not looking at the cost of ownership: it may not be a profitable model. It’s a very nuanced conversation.
Jon: This is fascinating. It’s about how to make sure value continues to be delivered over time. Getting stakeholders on the side at all is a big challenge for many in DevOps, so what would you say to organizations who really really struggle with even starting conversations?
Harbinder: Working across the business there are places where that conversation is still a sticking point and there are projects where the stakeholders have got past that point and have aspirations for change.
It boils down to that, but there’s also a lot of projects in the middle. I’ve found technology is not the hard part, engineering human behavior is a lot harder to navigate. So, I think the approach has to be the same in each case. There has to be a level of buy-in: if it doesn’t exist, you’re dead on arrival and are setting yourself up for failure. These conversations have to be had.
Executive sponsorship in a large enterprise is very important. If you are trying to enact this change at too low a level of seniority without exec sponsorship you can’t force the issue. And ultimately I’ve found, having worked with executives that buy into this and those that don’t, I find them to be the one compelling factor. Some executives say: Why do I want to change things? If you can shift the attitude to: let’s do this, I want to work with you. Once they start engaging and having conversations about what needs to be better, the flood gates open. I have the privilege of working at the moment with a CTO at the moment who gets this, evangelizes this, and facilitates this. Without that, you’re not going to be successful.
Jon: The Value Stream Mapping technique could be a really powerful way of both gaining executive buy-in, because you can say: look this is what it looks like and this is what we want to do. Building on that you can illustrate the power of change and demonstrate where you have improved business outcomes by improving the value stream?
Harbinder: The Value Stream is a great way to talk to the business, it takes the jargon out of the conversation, it doesn’t require you to understand the technicalities, it lets you have a very balanced conversation that is very easy to understand.
On the other hand, the DORA Metrics are a great way to start talking to engineering and other teams about a balanced approach to delivery. The DORA Metrics are a great acid test as well for the business side of the house, to see if they get it or not. Do those metrics resonate with them or not? It’s a great way to test if the business is ready to have that conversation in addition to any value stream mapping you’ve been doing.
Jon: You mentioned the shifting left, starting to get into deciding what to do in the first place and then making sure you are doing the correct thing and doing it across development and engineering. In your experience what lessons can be learned, what can operational engineering gain particularly in this world of container engineering, how far right can we go?
Harbinder: We tackle this a lot at the moment.
I believe a mature DevOps model is one in which you are able to collapse it all the way down to service teams owning their feature from cradle to grave and taking responsibility for it while it lives in production and defending its availability.
I’ve been very fortunate recently to realize that site reliability practices help start that conversation. These are the questions you start to answer:
Do you understand your service level objectives for your service on a regular, say weekly, basis?
Do you understand how you are adhering to that, what are the fluctuations of that?
Are you established enough to have an error budget for that place, once you do, do you govern yourself by it?
Do you pace your feature development in balance with your operational performance?
If you start exceeding your error budgets are you rebalancing in favor of stability?
And once those same engineers are the ones responding to those incidents to avoid customer impact, the conversations become so relevant to them. They suddenly want:
To bring in engineering practices to make their lives easier
Good monitoring practices
A good incident response platform
Blameless post-mortems that allow them to learn and build resilience into this system
Those conversations are so much easier to have when service teams own production. They are accountable, but ideally, you need to support them with, for example, a cloud operations team. But the difference is that the cloud operations team isn’t the first one to take the call, the service team is, and if they need help, they go to the cloud operations team. It’s more the shift in responsibility, they will always need other teams’ support, but they’re on call.
Jon: Given everything we’ve talked about, from all your years of experience, what’s the key that unlocks everything around sponsorship, around best practice, around understanding the right metrics?
Harbinder: There are three steps:
Make sure you’re having a holistic conversation, that acknowledges all the needs and definitions of value within the organization.
Be top down with your approach – have the conversation with different stakeholders, gauge appetite for change, be realistic if it’s going to happen or not.
Form communities bottom up – I strongly believe in community practices, guilds, coalescing around topics of improving and sprouting change, using open-source, proof of concepts and giving people the chance to fail, so they have a space where they can try to do things better, then try to connect the two.
I think, ultimately, you need to find the excuse to bring DevOps into your organization that is compelling to those at the top and at the bottom.
However you do that – Agile implementations, Cloud Adoption, New product launches – seek out the opportunities to start the conversation and anchor yourself to them.
You can listen to the entire conversation here.

Intermission: Med Systems Marathon – 1980 Rundown
by Will Moczarski
Introduction
According to issue 017 of “Compute! Magazine” (Oct. 1981), “MED SYSTEMS has been publishing and distributing software worldwide since 1979”. If my research is correct, Med Systems Software started developing and publishing games for the TRS-80 (and subsequently the Commodore PET and the Apple ][) more or less at the same time. In 1980, they not only released Rat’s Revenge, Deathmaze 5000, Labyrinth and Reality Ends but also ten more games and applications. Having reviewed the four available adventure games in previous “Missed Classics” playthroughs, I will dedicate this post to a short rundown of the games that don’t really fit the “Adventure Gamer” template, as Med Systems appears to have been a consistently interesting company.
Multiple attempts to contact William F. “Mike” Denman, jr., who apparently was one of the company’s two lead programmers as well as its president, sadly all but failed. I’ve tried several e-mail addresses and social media platforms, but alas, I never even received a reply. The other main protagonist of the company’s early years was Frank Corr, jr., whom I didn’t even find a trace of online. Most of the early games are still available in some form – several of the manuals can also be found in web archives. Many of the games don’t have in-game credits, so there’s basically no telling who wrote the games without surviving manuals. Sadly, three of the adventure games released in 1980 (or even before?) appear to be lost altogether, but more on that below. Through my research I came up with the following timeline of Med Systems games and applications released in 1980:
I am unable to derive the name of the ‘16K Manager’ from its ad. Also, Samurai, Starlord, Reality Ends and Bureaucracy may have been released much earlier as the September ad talks about them being available for other computers as well now. As I didn’t find an earlier ad, this is pure speculation, though. Otherwise, the timeline seems likely: The initial focus on educational games makes sense. I also know that Ghost’s Gallery is basically a variation of the earlier The Playful Professor. Moreover, it makes sense that the text adventures were released before the event of the 3-D continuum games.
When breaking the “16K barrier” was cutting-edge
From 1981, there seems to have been a change. Med Systems also published games by authors who were neither Corr nor Denman – including the late Jyym Pearson of Adventure International fame, as well as Simon Smith and the late Ken Kalish. The company seems to have left behind adventure games in 1983 when they focused on other genres. Their second line of products appear to have been educational games for children and adults alike – some of them might even shed some light on the fact that they apparently meant to start out as Med(ical) Systems. But even without the medical educational game that is The Human Adventure (William F. Denman jr., 1980), many of the games appear to deal with mental illness or popular depictions of “asylums”. This goes for their most popular game, Asylum (1981) which even warranted a sequel (1982), as well as The Institute (1981). The earlier 3-D adventures I’ve already played through also allude to their fiction actually representing a state of mental disorder, and in Reality Ends no less than the dissolution of reality itself is at stake. Med Systems were thus innovative as a (technical) pioneer of 3-D adventure games that fused the genres of the maze game and the text adventure – most successfully in the Asylum games. Also, they were among the earliest companies to tackle mental illness in a computer game – even without resorting to the convenient ‘amnesia’ plot.
With Denman pulling the ‘Crowther’ on me, I can only resort to speculation when trying to piece together the company history of Med Systems. I will try to sort the games chronologically best I can but many facts are still confusing me. Some dates are unclear (was The Farvar Legacy released in 1981 or was it 1983? What is the order of the games released in a given year?) and some games are lost. This is the reason why I’d like to put out a rather unusual…
Request for Assistance: Lost Games – Bureaucracy, Samurai, Starlord (presumably 1980)
Okay, let’s get Starlord out of the way first. I’ve found a listing of Med Systems’ early adventures in the September 1980 edition of “Kilobaud”, including the three mentioned titles as well as Reality Ends, but as I’ve found no further information about that game – as opposed to Bureaucracy and Samurai both of which show up in the 1981 Med Systems catalog available online. Before I found the Kilobaud article I thought that the name may well be a mix-up with Peter Hildebrandt’s Star Trap, published by Med Systems in 1981. I’ve found Star Trap but if anyone was able to elaborate on the existence of Starlord, I’d be more than happy to listen!
I really want to play these!!
Bureaucracy and Samurai are two more tough nuts to crack. Both were apparently released for the TRS-80 (models I and III) as well as the Apple II/e. Other than the 1981 Med Systems catalog (and the ad pictured above), there appears to be no trace of them online. Sure, research is hindered by the 1987 Infocom adventure of the same name (Bureaucracy) and the word samurai also pops up in some other game titles but it’s astonishing how little impact these two games seem to have had. So if anyone can enlighten me about these two games (or even find a copy) I will be very happy about it. I’d just love to present the whole history of Med Systems adventure games and these gaps are not exactly improving my sleep.
Sounds very neat, doesn’t it?
The same goes for Med Systems staff – if somebody knows somebody who’d be willing to talk (Frank Corr maybe?), I’d be more than happy to be able to conduct an interview. I’m well aware that all of these inquiries are very niche but you never know, right?
Marathon Recap: Games I’ve Played So Far – Rat’s Revenge, Deathmaze 5000, Labyrinth, Reality Ends
More speculation ahead! It’s very difficult to reconstruct the timeframe of the Med Systems catalog but Rat’s Revenge seems to have predated Deathmaze 5000 which appears to have predated Labyrinth. Reality Ends may have been an earlier game than at least Deathmaze 5000 and Labyrinth. Deathmaze 5000 and Labyrinth make up the first half of Med Systems’ “Continuum Series”, the other two games being Asylum and Asylum II. Continuum games are 3-D maze adventure games. According to vol. 7 no. 1 of “Creative Computer Magazine” (January 1981) they were all written in machine language, making them exceptionally fast. With every game, the programmers added more adventure game elements, with Labyrinth boasting more puzzles than Deathmaze 5000 and the Asylum games having much more of a plot. William F. Denman jr. was involved in three of the five games (starting with Labyrinth), and he even did the second Asylum game on his own. The engine may well be Frank Corr jr.’s, though, as he (presumably) programmed Rat’s Revenge before the two of them collaborated on Deathmaze 5000, Labyrinth and Asylum.
Denman was the lead programmer on some other games, too. I presume – although without a manual, that’s difficult to say – that he was also behind Reality Ends. The terse writing style is certainly similar and the game also calls the player a dolt if she doesn’t handle the interface properly – like Deathmaze 5000 and Labyrinth do. This may also mean that Reality Ends could have been written by Frank Corr, jr., but Denman appears to have been behind a substantial chunk of the games released in 1980.
There is also a little mystery surrounding a game called Deathmaze 2000. Is this a port or a predecessor? I’ll say a little more about this one below.
Finally, all three games I’ve played through for this blog use literature as a pretext. Deathmaze 5000 relies on the player’s intimate knowledge of Beowulf (and either the bible or the Byrds) whereas Labyrinth lifts its monster from the legend surrounding the labyrinth of Knossos (the minotaur). The minotaur also appears in Reality Ends and the city of Knossos reappears in a Med Systems adventure called The City of Knossos. The hints at ancient literature appear to be another bit of corporate identity along with the aforementioned focus on mental illness. Reality Ends, and I have to thank two anonymous commenters for this as I wasn’t aware of the fact at all, seems to base its whole storyworld on the Chronicles of Amber by Roger Zelazny. Quite a different role model compared to Beowulf or Plutarch but hey, whatever floats your code (sorry).
You can read the first three playthroughs here: Rat’s Revenge [part of the Deathmaze 5000 posts: [P1] Deathmaze 5000: [P1] [P2] [P3] [P4] Labyrinth: [P1] [P2] [P3] Reality Ends: [P1] [P2]
Skipped Game 1 – The Playful Professor (1980)
The Playful Professor is an educational game written and designed by William F. Denman, jr. It was released in 1980 for the TRS-80 (models I and III) and described by the company as “a mathematics learning aid that provides tutoring in integer mathematics, as well as fractions, for the four basic operations. Demonstrated solutions are completed step by step in a black board format easily understood by grade school children. Problems are presented in a game format that places the pupil in a sixty room mansion. To win, the player must catch the ghost with the key, then get to the front door before the ghost (or other player) recaptures the key. Movement is based on problem solving. Doors open and close randomly. The player’s turn is skipped if he gets temporarily sealed in a room.”
Unfortunately, although there have been countless magazine ads for The Playful Professor, the game does not seem to have survived online. At least, I couldn’t come up with a working version, so if you should come across one, I’d be more than happy to play it. When Screenplay took over Med Systems around 1983 or 1984 (a story for another time), they re-released the game in a revamped version for the Atari 8-bit family and the Commodore 64 as Playful Professor: Math Tutor in 1984. Steven Baumrucker ported William Denman’s game, and it seems like Mr. Denman commented on it personally when “Highretrogamelord” posted a sample on YouTube.
This means I will play the game once we get to 1984 in our marathon – the original version by William Denman, sadly, is not available right now.
Skipped Game 2 – The Human Adventure (1980)
The Human Adventure is another educational game by William Denman, apparently aimed at medical students, potentially hinting at the original direction his company was meant to take. In a way, The Human Adventure is even an adventure game, albeit an unusual one. It was released for the TRS-80 as well as the Apple II.
And So It Begins
The story goes that you are a miniaturized scientist inside a vessel injected into a person’s bloodstream. Inside, you use a simple text parser to move through the body in six different directions: front, back, right, left, head, feet. In an original review by Russ Williams of The Space Gamer (vol. 47, January 1982), the reviewer stated that he “learned more about human anatomy from this game than [he] did in [his] biology class!” Indeed, many of the descriptions are rather cryptic to the non-medical eye.
My Excel Map, Upper Part
The story appears to have been inspired by the 1966 Richard Fleischer film Fantastic Voyage which has a very similar plot premise. According to the manual, “[o]nly movement in the direction of the blood flow is legal. Access to all major organs is possible by making the correct decisions.” In general, there are three available game modes: exploration mode (ideal for mapping), game mode, and attention mode (whatever that may be). In the game mode, the patient has cancer, and there are two afflicted sites (initially). The hull of the player’s craft collects antibodies while moving around. After a while, she can attempt to heal the afflicted sites by destroying the disease with lasers.
Good job, Bones! Scotty – I think we’re done here.
The playing experience is enhanced greatly by mapping the gameworld from the outset; as the game mode is rather complicated and involves avoiding white cell attacks and “[p]eriodic electrification of the hull to burn off these proteins”, it’s a good way of getting a feel for the lay of the land.
In the beginning, you can choose between travelling through either a male or a female body. Both bodies look exactly the same except for their size and their nether regions, and you start out in a different location each time. You are addressed as if you were in a text adventure: “YOU ARE IN THE RIGHT CORONARY ARTERY. ACCESSIBLE OPENINGS: FEET. COMMAND?” Below is a picture of the human body with a small dot in the middle. The small dot is you.
The process of mapping The Human Adventure took longer than expected because the gameworld consists of a whopping 158 locations most of which are twisty little arteries/veins that look (almost) exactly alike. Most of these bloodstreams take you to all of the important organs and sites of the body – due to its educational realism, you travel through the lungs and the atrium over and over again, and short-cuts or even simple branches are few and far between. I have to say, though, that although mapping is a bit of a chore I did learn a lot of things about the human anatomy. It’s also a nice way to get acquainted with the gameworld before trying out a challenge.
Give me a break here, I’m one of the good guys!
When I start the actual game, I can choose between three levels of difficulty. The EASY mode is pretty difficult as it is. The game mode also introduces some more mechanics: typing REPORT shows me a turn counter as well as the location of the two initial sites of infection, e.g. LIVER, PANCREAS. Typing ELE(CTRIFY) electrifies the hull of my ship which is necessary every few turns to not bump into hostile white blood cells over and over again. If I do get attacked by white blood cells or happen to reach an infected site, I can LAS(ER) them to get rid of them. There’s a 100% chance of me eliminating them but both make me lose my energy more quickly. In the beginning, my energy is up to 100% but I lose a little energy (one to two percent) with every move. To REC(HARGE), I have to travel all the way to the brain. INT(ERFERON) makes me use an “interferon charge” but I can’t figure out what that does as the answer is always “Ok…nothing happens”.
He’s dead, Jim.
After some failed attempts, I get the hang of The Human Adventure. Two strategies are required to win: First, you have to electrify the hull every five turns or so to avoid getting swamped by white blood cells. Second, you need to move up to the brain after having vaporized one of the two infections in order to recharge your energy. It’s all a lot of fun, and the other two levels of difficulty (moderate and hard) are pleasantly challenging. I also find out what the interferon charges are for: If you choose one of the two harder modes, the patient has cancer. This makes the disease spread pretty quickly and you’ll have to visit at least three infected sites to succeed. Lasers don’t vaporize the cancer – but interferon charges destroy it.
It’s all in a day’s work at St. Eligius
Although The Human Adventure is 95% mapping and 5% playing, it’s a pretty enjoyable game.
Skipped Game 3 – Money Master (1980)
Money Master is apparently another maze game “designed to tutor the young child in the use of money.” This one appears to be lost, too, so I can’t really tell whether it’s more of an application or more of a game. The game apparently has the player move through a maze where she encounters different objects and creatures. Whenever this happens, she has to perform a transaction – collect tolls, give the right amount of change etc. The mazes are randomly generated and there are two dozen creatures and objects to be found within.
Skipped Game 4 – Ghost’s Gallery (1980)
Ghost’s Gallery is a variation of The Playful Professor without the math. According to the Med Systems catalog, it boasts enhanced graphics and features compared to its predecessor of the same year. The goal is to capture the ghost with the key and get to the front door quickly in order to escape the haunted mansion. It offers a single-player mode as well as a two-player mode. At first I thought it was heavily influenced by that other famous maze game with ghosts, but Pac-Man was released in North America in October 1980 while The Playful Professor was probably released around February and Ghost’s Gallery came out in May 1980 at the latest.
Ghost’s Gallery is a pretty fast and very simple game. The ghost holding the key is marked with a K, and you have a fixed number of moves before the layout of the maze changes unpredictably. If you find a good position to wait, you can press D to end your move. The moment you manage to touch the ghost with the key, you sort of become the ghost (marked with the K). Now your job is to get to the exit at the bottom of the screen as quickly as possible, because the hunter has become the hunted. It’s all over very fast. There’s another option: By pressing S you can search for a secret passage which sometimes gets you out of a jam.
I ain’t afraid of no ghost.
I can imagine the two-player mode to be quite good, as it’s not really that much fun to steal from the computer-controlled ghost and then run from it, still it may be very nice to chase after one another in front of the same screen. I can also imagine The Playful Professor adding some challenge by letting the (young) player solve some math problems in between. A game of Ghost’s Gallery is over pretty quickly, and although it’s certainly a major programming feat in 1980 to create such a relatively smooth, fast and approachable game for the TRS-80, its single-player mode did not entertain me for too long.
1980s Kids <3 Ghost’s Gallery
I never actually lost, so I don’t even know what the fail state is. The won message suggests that it’s possible to fail but I didn’t find out how which goes to show just how easy the game is.
It’s pretty neat that you can name your character!
Skipped Application 1 – Athletic Index (1980)
The first Med Systems product I was able to find a magazine ad for is an application called Athletic Index. Although the program can not be found online, it appears to be an encyclopedia containing facts about the Olympic Games. Apparently, the Athletic Index was already discontinued in 1981 as it’s not featured in the spring 1981 catalog anymore.
Skipped Application 2 – The Basic Bartender (1980)
The Basic Bartender was written by William Denman and appears to be another kind of encyclopedia. Med Systems advertised it as a “very specialized data mini-system” containing information on 102 mixed beverages. It’s possible to edit this database “as memory conditions allow”. The user can either search for a recipe, browse by categories or take a look at the complete list of available drinks. The mixing instructions are detailed and sometimes contain information about the recommended glass and garnish recommendations. I assume that it’s called The Basic Bartender because it was written in BASIC but of course I cannot prove that as this one’s also lost.
Skipped Gimmick – Adam’s Apple (1980)
In their spring 1981 catalog, Med Systems also had a 48 piece 3-D jigsaw puzzle resembling an apple on offer. If anything, it’s a good example how much they loved their wordplay: According to their description, “Adam’s Apple” was “seemingly designed just for Apple owners” and “a challenge to the core.”
Final Conundrum – Deathmaze 2000 (1980)
Deathmaze 2000 had me going in circles for some time as it appeared on the “Giant List of Classic Game Programmers” (Link: https://dadgum.com/giantlist/) which is sort of comprehensive if not really all-encompassing but nevertheless regularly updated and appears to be correct most of the time. In the 2019 version, the “game” is no longer listed but looking at the 2001 list turns up the title “Deathmaze 2000” written by William Denman for the Apple ][ which is probably just a harmless typo and nothing else.
Well, this is it for now. Med Systems sure is an obscure company these days but back in the day they were sort of a major player (by 1980 to 1983 standards) littering all the major TRS-80 magazines with a plethora of ads. Many dealers advertised that they had Med Systems games in stock, so there certainly must have been some demand, and especially the Continuum games have grown to be true cult classics in some retrogaming (or just nostalgic) circles.
I’d like to conclude my write-up with the company’s own words, namely a mission statement from the December 1980 issue of Kilobaud:
