Do you think the show is actually about Edd and Eddy's relationship? Before being about anything else? The things happening between them gets more focus than pretty much any other thing (scams, jawbreakers, their families) through and through.

Specially in the last seasons, where they pretty much get rid of the scams and we're all about their strained friendship.

the usual disclaimer, i don't know a ton about what went on behind the scenes and i can't speak to anyone's intentions. that said, i definitely don't think the show started with just edd and eddy's relationship as the focus. i'm guessing that as time went on the characters evolved and the writers had fun with edd and eddy's dynamic since they're the two most developed characters. it adds stakes (even though they always end up friends in the end) and some relatability in an otherwise extremely irreverent cartoon. not every single episode is about the two of them of course, and by no means do i think that ed is excluded entirely. but i think it's fair for someone to have the takeaway that the show is ultimately about the ups and downs of their friendship.
