Cilantro is actually not that hard to find in Japan! It came to Japan from China during the Heian period. Nowadays it's commonly known as pakuchii from the thai phakchii. This is @isaksbestpillow btw
Siiri in disguise, HI! (Hey, hope you’re feeling okay!)
At least one person saw my Fully Booked post, ha! I honestly wanted to see these amateurs try to tackle Thai cooking techniques because I’m learning as well, BUT, anyway: cilantro vs. culantro!
Cilantro is definitely ubiquitous (and yummy) (but not for folks with that soapy genetic tendency) — but I wrote “culantro” in my tags, and I believe it was in the ingredient list for the tom yum goong they were making. Culantro is used in both Thai and Mexican/Latin American cuisine, and I believe it’s also known as sawtooth herb or sawtooth coriander around my parts (I live in an area of the States where the next most populous demographic is Latino). Fresh culantro is not easily found in my non-Latino-dominant neighborhood; I’d likely have to head to a Mexican-majority neighborhood and supermarket to find it.
Culantro is hard enough to find in the States that the major Latino food supply company, Goya, makes a culantro cooking base that I have indeed found at least in my big city supermarket, but I haven’t searched for it in smaller neighborhoods.
I’ve never cooked with culantro! Now I’m curious about seeking it out.
Now these guys are gonna start episode 3 in an Osaka supermarket having difficulty finding coconut milk, which is concerning, but also, some of their recipes (was it somtum? I can’t remember) also called for cilantro/coriander ROOTS, which are notoriously hard to find outside of Thailand. I hope they can find them. Those roots are always chopped off whenever I get cilantro in the American supermarkets; and I’ve only seen the roots on bunches of cilantro only a few times in Asian supermarkets.
Thus endeth my meditation on leafy herbs; have a great day, Siiri! 🤣 I might continue to post on Fully Booked because my god, the harder their cooking tasks, the more lush their faces seem!
