Happy Black History Month!
This Black History Month I'd like to celebrate the genre that makes us jump at every unknown noise, brings us nightmares, and has us up late turning the page in anticipation of what will happen next - Black Thriller & Horror! There has been a lovely uptick in the publishing of Black Thrillers and Horror in the past few years where Black protagonists are solving complex mysteries, fighting against all forms of supernatural beings, and sometimes a combination of both. I've had so much fun reading all of these novels and am greatly looking forward to what 2024 has to bring.
When creating a list of Black Thriller/Horror writers I must begin with the queen, Tiffany D. Jackson. Her first book "Monday's Not Coming" was a perfectly written thriller with a plot twist that hit with a gut punch that I'm still recovering from. Since then she's been on a streak with hit after hit after hit. Her latest, The Weight of Blood, is a book you cannot miss.
The Weight of Blood by Tiffany D. Jackson
When Springville residents—at least the ones still alive—are questioned about what happened on prom night, they all have the same explanation … Maddy did it. An outcast at her small-town Georgia high school, Madison Washington has always been a teasing target for bullies. And she's dealt with it because she has more pressing problems to manage. Until the morning a surprise rainstorm reveals her most closely kept Maddy is biracial. She has been passing for white her entire life at the behest of her fanatical white father, Thomas Washington. After a viral bullying video pulls back the curtain on Springville High's racist roots, student leaders come up with a plan to change their host the school's first integrated prom as a show of unity. The popular white class president convinces her Black superstar quarterback boyfriend to ask Maddy to be his date, leaving Maddy wondering if it's possible to have a normal life. But some of her classmates aren't done with her just yet. And what they don't know is that Maddy still has another secret … one that will cost them all their lives.
2023 also gave us two amazing debut thrillers and I, for one, cannot wait to see what these two authors cook up next.
Their Vicious Games by Joelle Wellington
You must work twice as hard to get half as much. Adina Walker has known this the entire time she’s been on scholarship at the prestigious Edgewater Academy—a school for the rich (and mostly white) upper class of New England. It’s why she works so hard to be perfect and above reproach, no matter what she must force beneath the surface. Even one slip can cost you everything. And it does. One fight, one moment of lost control, leaves Adina blacklisted from her top choice Ivy League college and any other. Her only chance to regain the future she’s sacrificed everything for is the Finish, a high-stakes contest sponsored by Edgewater’s founding family in which twelve young, ambitious women with exceptional promise are selected to compete in three mysterious events: the Ride, the Raid, and the Royale. The winner will be granted entry into the fold of the Remington family, whose wealth and power can open any door. But when she arrives at the Finish, Adina quickly gets the feeling that something isn’t quite right with both the Remingtons and her competition, and soon it becomes clear that this larger-than-life prize can only come at an even greater cost. Because the Finish’s stakes aren’t just make or break… they’re life and death. Adina knows the deck is stacked against her—it always has been—so maybe the only way to survive their vicious games is for her to change the rules.
I Feed Her to the Beast and the Beast Is Me by Jamison Shea
Laure Mesny is a perfectionist with an axe to grind. Despite being constantly overlooked in the elite and cutthroat world of the Parisian ballet, she will do anything to prove that a Black girl can take center stage. To level the playing field, Laure ventures deep into the depths of the Catacombs and strikes a deal with a pulsating river of blood. The primordial power Laure gains promises influence and adoration, everything she’s dreamed of and worked toward. With retribution on her mind, she surpasses her bitter and privileged peers, leaving broken bodies behind her on her climb to stardom. But even as undeniable as she is, Laure is not the only monster around. And her vicious desires make her a perfect target for slaughter. As she descends into madness and the mystifying underworld beneath her, she is faced with the ultimate choice: continue to break herself for scraps of validation or succumb to the darkness that wants her exactly as she is—monstrous heart and all. That is, if the god-killer doesn’t catch her first. From debut author Jamison Shea comes I Feed Her to the Beast and the Beast Is Me, a slow-burn horror that lifts a veil on the institutions that profit on exclusion and the toll of giving everything to a world that will never love you back.
And to round out this list, we also gotta point out the fellas who are also killing it with the Thriller/Horror genre.
Promise Boys by Nick Brooks
The prestigious Urban Promise Prep school might look pristine on the outside, but deadly secrets lurk within. When the principal ends up murdered on school premises and the cops come sniffing around, a trio of students―J.B., Ramón, and Trey―emerge as the prime suspects. They had the means, they had the motive . . . and they may have had the murder weapon. But with all three maintaining their innocence, they must band together to track down the real killer before they are arrested. Or is the true culprit hiding among them?
The Getaway by Lamar Giles
Welcome to the funnest spot around . . . Jay is living his best life at Karloff Country, one of the world’s most famous resorts. He’s got his family, his crew, and an incredible after-school job at the property’s main theme park. Life isn’t so great for the rest of the world, but when people come here to vacation, it’s to get away from all that. As things outside get worse, trouble starts seeping into Karloff. First, Jay’s friend Connie and her family disappear in the middle of the night and no one will talk about it. Then the richest and most powerful families start arriving, only... they aren’t leaving. Unknown to the employees, the resort has been selling shares in an end-of-the-world oasis. The best of the best at the end of days. And in order to deliver the top-notch customer service the wealthy clientele paid for, the employees will be at their total beck and call. Whether they like it or not. Yet Karloff Country didn’t count on Jay and his crew--and just how far they’ll go to find out the truth and save themselves. But what’s more dangerous: the monster you know in your home or the unknown nightmare outside the walls?
The Forest Demands Its Due by Kosoko Jackson
Regent Academy has a long and storied history in Winslow, Vermont, as does the forest that surrounds it. The school is known for molding teens into leaders, but its history is far more nefarious. Seventeen-year-old Douglas Jones wants nothing to do with Regent's king-making; he’s just trying to survive. But then a student is murdered and, for some reason, by the next day no one remembers him having ever existed, except for Douglas and the groundskeeper's son, Everett Everley. In his determination to uncover the truth, Douglas awakens a horror hidden within the forest, unearthing secrets that have been buried for centuries. A vengeful creature wants blood as payment for a debt more than 300 years in the making—or it will swallow all of Winslow in darkness. And for the first time in his life, Douglas might have a chance to grasp the one thing he’s always felt was power. But if he’s not careful, he will find out that power has a tendency to corrupt absolutely everything.
If you are a fan of murder mysteries, supernatural thrillers, or just like to get scared, get thee to a bookstore (or library) and support your Black Thriller/Horror writer.

Me with this season
So, it wasn't bad, but for now it's definitely my least favourite.
The opening scene was amazing, probably the best one of the series, buuuut... there were many other scenes where I felt bored, like when Javier and David were playing baseball or something like that. That was so boring I almost fucked up a few times without answering in time because I kept getting distracted.
Talking about answers and choices in general, they were too easy this season for the most part. If Clementine tells me what she thinks, I automatically do what she says without thinking too much about it (if she tells me to jump, I'll ask her how high). She's obviously not like other characters, and there were times where there wasn't someone else to balance her with opposite opinions. BUT, there are aspects of the gameplay I prefer, like the fact that Conrad can die at every episode but if you play your cards right (which I didn't lol) he stays alive till the end. I hate when all characters dies, it gives me the impression that everything I did was pointless. And with this being said, Kate was still the only one I was able to keep alive lmao
When it comes to the story, I wonder why couldn't we have just followed Clem's? I know that The Walking Dead isn't supposed to be just on one specific character, but after the first two seasons it's her the one I want to play as. Our focus has always been on Clementine from the first season, even if then we played as Lee, and I don't really care about sticking with someone else all of a sudden. Playing as Javier ruined the immersion for me. As Clementine the story could have been about how she loses AJ to the New Frontier and how she takes him back, maybe starting the first episode from when she finds Ava and closing it with the whole thing about the medicine and how she gets kicked out from there. The memories would have been in the game to create a better backstory for her time with Kenny/Jane/when she was alone or at Wellington.
Wellington not being this safe harbour everyone talked about, honestly, makes sense to me. It was just rumours, rumours created by hope I guess, but most of the times rumours are misleading and don't end up being completely true. But I hate what they did to both Jane and Kenny. As much as I hate her, I hate Jane's death even more. She is a survivor and always did anything to keep herself safe, and I found so... stupid, even insulting, her killing herself because she found out she was pregnant. And god, how much I hate the comments I've found about this whole thing. Make her trying anything to lose the baby instead of her just hanging herself. God, I hated it so much. Meanwhile for Kenny I don't even have words. It checks out with him sacrificing himself to protect AJ and Clem, but not everything happening because of a seatbelt. The memory in the third episode, though, was chef's kiss.
The real main character of this season, Javier, and his family aren't bad, but I didn't like them/cared enough to follow them the entire time, and I would have preferred them as secondary characters instead. But yes, I did like Javier, Tripp, Ava, and Kate really grew on me. I loved how Kate, the one who wanted to get away from Richmond as soon as she could, remained there to save it because it was "her fault". I loved that for her, and of course I followed her plan. Meanwhile I didn't like Gabe so much. I really tried to like him, but I just couldn't care. His death was fucking awful though and I'm sad I got the ending where he can't be saved. About David: glad he's dead I guess. I hated him every second, even if I tried to be "a good brother".

Life update time!
Because when else other than a Sunday morning drinking tea suits?
Life has been madness since we got back from Melbourne. Airnz cancelled our flights home so it took and extra 36 hours to get back, and we didn’t sleep for 24 of it since we had to go via Auckland. It was so bad. More jet lagged from that than when we went to America and came home after 5 weeks 😂😂😂 we were also lucky - we knew people who weren’t getting back until three days later. It was such chaos over there honestly
You can absolutely tell that travel demand is back to pre covid levels but all the services are not back up at the level they need to be. Yikes.
Melbs was awesome as per usual. We got to completely divorce reality for a good 8 days and just hang out together which was amazing and very needed after this year. Not that we’ve been struggling or anything but fuck I’ve missed Dave. There’s just been so much going on and moving home for two months was rough. Also we met all my cousins the first day we were there which was lovely and I had a fab discussion with my cousin who I haven’t seen since everything with dad. I was talking about how hard it was and she was like look, I spent last weekend crying over Eve So it doesn’t really stop you just build around it. Eve was her baby that was stillborn at 36 weeks and it was so heartbreaking for them. And it was nice just to know that like, yep, it’s Fkn miserable and that doesn’t change but life keeps happening because honestly, finding good grief resources is hard Fkn work and I’ve struggled with it this year.
We did all our usual (zoo, ikea, shopping, wandering) and just like chatting and talking and wandering through gardens and we went to the museum and it was so lush. Like what a Fkn gift of time and space we gave ourselves honestly. I loved it.
Got home from that entirely sleep deprived and mum called me in absolute tears less than 30 minutes after getting home. It was rough. I’m still exceptionally annoyed at the extended fam for having dropped the ball so Fkn badly. And I’m even more annoyed at my sister who took advantage of our absence and spent the week trying to get mum to move to Wellington which is more convenient for them but mum would absolutely hate tbh. So that was a rough reintroduction.
I went back to work the next day only to find out the utter SHIT my team had pulled in my absence and had to put two of them on formal performance management. It’s been a fucking nightmare.
And it basically hasn’t stopped since then. On the plus side, I’ve hired two new people who start tomorrow (yay!!!) so I’m off to Auckland to do induction with them. They’ll be super good value I think. I’m looking forward to it.
Life’s been a bit more settled with less travel up to whanganui and back. I had to laugh when I was talking to my the other day coz we were both like, I haven’t seen you in forever! It’s been five weeks but in the context of this year…. It’s the longest we’ve been apart since January? I think? It’s been good to be a bit of a homebody again because Dave and I are both just cooked at the end of this year. Both sleeping in til 10am on weekends without any effort just trying to play catch up. Just absolutely knackered. So it’s been nice to hang with each other again and just stay home.
An offer for mums house fell over this week so that’s been incredibly hard. We just need to get her off the block so she can actually move into the next phase of figuring out what life without dad looks like and it’s so hard to be physically unable to do that for her. I’m annoyed it’s not going to be this side of Christmas which is even more difficult but anyway. I was really hoping it wouldn’t carry over to the new year but sigh I guess it’s gunna. On the plus side, she’s volunteering at the foodbank again which gets her out of the house and around people and contributing meaningfully again so that’s been excellent.
Dave’s getting hammered with work at the moment but he’s doing ok I think. He never talks about missing dad or anything since he knows how much of mums load (and my own) I’m carrying but I’m not sure it’ll be good in the long run. Oh well.
I am going ok ish for the most part. I’m just so exhausted. I ended up extending my Christmas leave through til 10 Jan so have 2.5 weeks off which is excellent and needed. We’re not going anywhere and are just gunna chill at home and have a staycation. It’s going to be delightful.
I’ve been thinking about goals and stuff and how I want next year to play out. We were meant to start trying for kids this year which obviously didn’t happen so that’s probably still on the cards for next year. I think the thing I’m coming closer and closer to is just quitting social media and books and just trying to absolutely settle into my life and being where my feet are. After the last few years I think I just need to stop for a while and figure out what all these new parts of me are and how to integrate them and where I stand. It’s v confusing. I just want a quiet simple easy year filled with good friends and quality time with people and space for myself and sunshine and deliciousness and laughter and existence in its simplest form. I don’t want it to feel so effortful. I dunno. Fortunately I have a decent break to spend some time on it.
I was trying to explain it to Anne the other day and failed miserable. What would life look like if my inner world was so much more clear and certain? If I shored up all my reserves in myself and knew I was good enough to withstand it all? If i wasn’t so stuck on the whims and fancies of others? If they didn’t get to affect me so much? If I trusted myself so certainly that what other people said or did I would still be ok? If I had defined success for myself and what I wanted? Ugh I dunno. It’s a work in progress. And a lot of tangled thinking behind it. (Just a casual 12 years worth).
In other news, we’ve been thoroughly enjoying. Utopia on Netflix. Harry and Meghan on Netflix. Christmas movies. Michelle Obamas new book. No sugar Vanilla Coke. Almighty blood orange sparkling water. Evening walks to the river in the sunshine. Just being more active generally. Reconnecting with friends after a mad mad year. The prospect of a new year on the horizon and the hope that it can’t be any shittier than the year we’ve just lived through touch wood. Travelling for work again. Christmas shopping all being done. The fact meowser is still alive and mostly well and with us. Sunshine. Fresh starts. Some breathing room.
I know I’m gunna be ok.

Soli’s wishlist for Our Flag Means Death Season 2
Hey, so why not: I'll try typing up my ofmd s2 wishlist. Some of these are improbable and/or unpopular. You don’t have to agree with everything, but I’ve been encouraged to share my thoughts. OFMD Season 2 wishlist, in the order in which I thought of them just now: 1. THAT THERE BE ONE. Things are looking very good as of May 2022 but cruel and senseless things happen all the time and nothing is assured. 2. Re: the reunion: THAT THERE BE ONE. Some of you have never had your onscreen kiss and love confession take an immediate hard right into bury-your-gays and it fking shows. Furthermore the writers and actors on this show are amazing and I want to see how they do it. 3. Abshir returns! That dude is an absolute legend. I need to know what he and his friends got up to after 1x05 and I am dying to see Oluwande's 'investment' pay off, hopefully at a point when the crew are at their lowest. 4. Hornberry joins the Revenge crew. He obviously likes them (he and Stede have a 'rapport') and there is no way that man is straight. I want to see the Brittish officer -> pirate pipeline happen in real time. And I want to see him involved in Stede et all getting off their feet/getting a ship. LET HIM KISS BOYS. (Is he sleeping with Wellington? Maybe we’ll find out!)
5. Ghosthoney joins either the Revenge crew or Blackbeard crew. I could honestly see it working either way and either way is pure gold. 6. "You're STEDE'S Ed???" The many people on Tumblr calling for this are right and should say so. Every drop of Ed & Mary content gives me life, particularly the moment she finds out he and the 'Dread Pyrate Blackbeard' are the same person, regardless of how exactly that goes down. 7. Lines for Ivan (in this economy) Ok, so it looks like this one isn’t going to happen, which is tragic but it does seem to mean that there is going to be a Season 2 for Ivan to not be in, so...great?? Anyway, so the way I would deal with this is for Ivan do die in an absurdly dramatic way off-screen. It is somehow both heroic and cool and also stupid and hilarious. The actors can probably improv this one, idk. But no body, no crime, and leave it just open ended enough that he can just show up down the line (in an equally absurd and ridiculous way) if something changes wrt Guz’s schedule or w/e
8. Jemain Clement as Benjamin Hornigold. This has been hc’d so hard by so many fans...are we sure it’s not already canon? Pirate-hunter arc would be epic. 9. Captain Thomas EDWARD’S. What can I say except that historical stuff is only cool if it’s funny and/or romantic and this sh is both.
10. Doug comes out as trans, giving us bisexual (or otherwise wlw) Mary and transfeminine rep in one fell swoop.
11. Speaking of which: Izzy Hands tries on a dress and experiences gender euphoria for the first time, which serves as a major turning point for the character. (Ed and Izzy are lesbians together; I don’t make the rules).
12. Ed kisses a girl (and likes it, a la Katie Perry). Please I am dying for explicit bi rep in OFMD.
13, and this is an important one: STEDE KILLS SOMEONE ON PURPOSE. --13a. that person is a dick. --13b. and preferably a racist. This is an important point on Stede’s white-guy journey to active anti-racism.
13. Anne Bonny and Mary Read, obviously. Mary is Tig Notaro but I can think of literally dozens of actors I’d like to see as Anne and they’d all be great for different reasons. MOAR WLW
14. My favorite actors from the last major fandom I was involved in, because why the h not, is this a wishlist or what?
15. Harvey Guillen as someone extremely flamboyant and completely unhinged. He’s been the uptight, contained one on wwdits for so long. Let that beautiful little man be ‘round, brown, and proud’ and completely bonkers. Let him get in a knife fight with Jim. Maybe he’s part of the Siete Gallos, maybe he’s Jim’s long lost brother, maybe he’s just some pirate, idc. This may or may not be a Harvey Guillen stan account.
16. A new wig for Jim. Or maybe just Vico’s hair? I do not like the current wig.
17. CREW. FLASHBACKS. The people (including Samba) on multiple platforms who are calling for this are right and should say so.
18. Geraldo appears in flashbacks. He is an underrated character and Fred Armisen is delightful. I said what I said.
18. STEARD NATION. Murray Hewitt was a LOOK and I would like to see more, ty.
19. We all know that Lucius is alive, but have you consider that his life was somehow saved by the wooden finger, AKA the power of ~love~?
20. The people calling for Rory Kinnear to return as increasingly distant members of the Badminton family who all, improbably, look exactly like Rory Kinnear are right and should say so. But male family members only; we will not be doing the ‘man in a dress’ trope on OFMD.
21. SHOW US THE TALENT SHOW YOU COWARDS. The people calling for this ar-- you get the idea.
22. (can’t believe I almost forgot this one) Gnossienne 5 played on an unlikely instrument like electric guitar or something.
23. GIVE FANG A DOG. Another popular one that is also empirically correct.
24. Explicit ace rep. I don’t really care who but bonus if it’s someone we already know.
25. One time I read a post somewhere that said s2 should start with Stede standing in his dinghy with his hand upraised and he sees the crew and they see him and he is immediately hit in the face by the red silk and. Yes. That. I agree. that’s all I can think of for now, except for the general idea of ‘boys kissing,’ which really should be a given but, again, the world is cruel and senseless and we can take nothing for granted.

HAROLD TOURS THE COUNTRYSIDE
Llama Tell You ‘bout Cottage Living
I'm in Henford-on-Bagley!
Sul Sul… Is this how it goes? No matter. Hey there, it’s me, Harold the Llama, and before you go about wondering how a llama like myself managed to prepare a blog, I'll have you know these nails have been trimmed to perfection to reveal the capable keyboard connoisseur that I am. But my motor skills are not what this is about! It's about my charming home of Henford-on-Bagley.
Sim legends of old say that Henford-on-Bagley was created from the perfect mingling of earth and water… but I'm pretty sure some Sims loved the nearby Cordelia Falls and that the River Bagley runs through it in all of its glory. Hmmm, majestic.
Anywho, in order to get to know more about this charming village, we will have to visit all of its neighbourhoods. Our first stop is Finchwick, where the action happens!... Sort of… in a manner of speaking. Finchwick prides itself as a historically bustling and tight-knit community.
Finchwick is the home of the weekly - yes, weekly - fair in which locals put their skills to the test in creating the most sophisticated and delicious creations, such as pies, as well as show off their most prized animals *cough cough* myself included *cough cough* and oversized crops - trust me, the bigger the better - to be judged, as it is tradition, by the Mayor no less! Winning or just participation will get you a reward, but to be honest, it is all for bragging rights and what is better than bragging rights anyway, am I right?
This neighbourhood hosts the historic square which is also home to the busy marketplace - perfect if you love window shopping - and the village pub - ‘The Gnome’s Arms.’ The marketplace is where you’ll find Goldbloom’s Grocery Shop, home of the best produce! But don’t take it from me, try some yourself! I recommend their aubergines… that’s an eggplant for the non-locals.
Another iconic spot is the Crumplebottom’s Garden Shop, owned by Agatha Crumplebottom, and run by Agatha and Agnes! This shop will serve all of your gardening needs, as well as some extra things… not quite for gardening, but for enjoying nonetheless such as conserves and jams… mmm, jams. Now I want some crumpets and jam, the superior option to buttered crumpets - fight your chickens about it, not me. I should ask my keeper to make some… but who am I kidding, I can only eat feed for llamas (well, sometimes a treat) *sigh* A llama can dream after all. Just don’t tell Agatha if you make some, or she'll send her gnomes to take them for sure as they are her favourites.
But, back to The Gnome! If you're feeling quite curious or in need of a little drama for your llama, you can enter The Gnome's Arms for a chance to listen in on the village’s gossip, history, and what is happening around it. Owned by the Scotts, Simon and Sara, this pub has been a dream come true, despite Simon running randomly into chickens - or me for that matter - along the way. This is where everyone knows everything about everyone, so take advantage of that as you visit! And their food is amazing, make sure to try their Bangers and Mash or their Beef Wellington; I hear it is fantastic. Enjoy the convivial mood by having a Henford Heart-to-Heart with or offering a Finchwick Favor to Sara, who should be minding the bar, for good measure. Sara can give you advice if you seek it, or maybe share some ghost stories if you want to know them.
If you’re in a helpful mood, you may also help Sims with village errands and learn more about their backgrounds, interests, and what they do around town! Or just for the good rewards, if that’s your bag.
Trotting along, we find Old New Henford. A fun piece of trivia for you all: it was originally named ‘Little Henford.’ However after some consideration, it was proposed that ‘New Henford’ would be better suited… more posh if you will. Unfortunately, there was a mishap with the national mapmakers and the town apparently ceased to exist for two whole weeks! Ha! Imagine that? Well, after that of course the town needed a new name and Old New Henford was picked, and here we are.
This part of the village is known for their lush estates, rolling hills, and their small - but beautiful - community garden. This neighbourhood used to be one giant property owned by the Watson family, who sold plots of it over the years. They still own a sizable estate perched at the top of the Olde Mill Hill - you can’t miss it.
You will find that this part of town is perfect to have a lot with a garden and space for livestock and oversized crops! You can always take notes as you stroll around the area and see how the townsfolk are doing with their gardens and plots.
Old New Henford is the perfect place for those that love animals like yours truly. In this neighbourhood you can find rabbits hopping about, wild birds you can sing to, and cheeky little foxen that you can befriend… but beware of their mischievous nature! They will want to surprise you and *mumbles* you’ll want to be sure your chickens are accounted for *mumbles.* This part of the town is also great for those who love to fish. Who knows, maybe someone finally will catch that wolf eel I keep hearing about.
You can even say that it is an idyllic place for a new start. Just ask Cecilia, one of our newest residents who moved in recently from the big city looking for a new life after having her heart broken. Now she shares her life with us living in a fab, refurbished barn. She loves keeping her garden, and her chickens! She is a lovely neighbour. I hope one day she finds true love. Unfortunately for Michael Bell, the local Creature Keeper, he is not her chosen one, but at least Cecilia has a long term commitment to all critters that visit for now.
Like Cecilia, if you welcome Wild Animals for visits, some can become your friends for life and even bring you gifts.
From the rolling hills of Old New Henford, we arrive at The Bramblewood.
The Bramblewood is the natural beauty of Henford-on-Bagley.These woods have a storybook-like aura that delights anyone who visits. It has long provided a picturesque place for many wild birds, rabbits, and foxen to call home, so you may find yourself among friends here including our friend Michael, our Creature Keeper, who roams the woods on most days caring for animals and plants.
It is truly a wonderful place, where you can forage Chocoberries and mushrooms, including nightcaps - some say that you can only find them at night… aptly named! The Bramblewood can be full of surprises, especially if you encounter the Isle of Volpe, named after Lord Volpe, founder of Finchwick. The Isle of Volpe is one of the most iconic hallmarks of Henford-on-Bagley, not only because of the history reflected on its ruins, but also because it is the most romantic spot in town. Generations of Sims remember their first kiss in the Isle of Volpe *love sigh*, so if you are coming with your sweetheart, you should spend some time there to experience its splendor. Just be careful not to disturb the Creature Keeper’s home. He is a gentle but private Sim.
But if romance is not something you fancy, head out for a bit of adventure and visit the Isle of Volpe Park. Run through the path that leads you to Sophie the Snail, who is always happy to take a picture. If it is calm and serenity you seek, be sure to spend some time visiting Cordelia Falls. In the end, wherever you spend your time in this part of town, it is said that the Bramblewood can change your life forever, and so far there have been no truer words to live by.
And so you see, my friend, whether you decide to come for a visit or move here to my humble countryside town, there is always something happening, something to do, something to dream about, but most importantly, know that we welcome you with open … erhm… feet!
We hope to see you soon!
Cheers!
If this is all moosic to your ears, that’s great news! Even better, if you purchase the pack by September 2, you also get the bonus Gnome on the Go Digital Content** seen above! Ride around town on the Scenic Commuting Bicycle, decorate your garden with the "Onward" The Adventurous Gnome sculpture, and brighten your yard with Bramblewood's DeLIGHTful Tree.
Preorder The Sims 4 Cottage Living Expansion Pack now to start playing immediately when it launches on July 22 at 10:00 a.m. PT for Mac/PC on Origin and Steam, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation®4 and PlayStation®5.

Dun-dun-DUNE (2021)
The novel, Dune, by the author Frank Herbert released in 1965 with a total of 6 books has always been a challenge for any director who wants to bring these novels onto the screen. With huge layers of political and religious meaning, through fifty years since the first version of Dune on screen released in 1964, the movie world still can’t find a version of Dune that would successfully satisfy fans of the novel around the world. But under the magic hand of the director Denis Villeneuve, Dune part one came out last year and is one of the most expected science fiction movies by sci-fi fans.
For me one of the most important aspects of a successful science-fiction movie is the CGI and the visual effects, and this is the part that Dune has done very well. The movie is a show for the eyes and it would be really sad if you can’t enjoy Dune in the theater. The Arrakis planet covered in sand dunes appeared very realistic and graphic. The contrast between the light and the dark from the Atreides and the Harkonnen also appear very clearly helps the audience distinguish the bad side and the good side. The camera angles in the movie are also on point, the broadview angles really extract the beauty of the planets and the close ups make the emotions of the characters appear clearer.
I have to give credit to director Denis Villeneuve and his crew for making every scene of the movie very beautiful and also making the audiences believe that it’s Dune but not some kind of desert on Earth. The normal scenes interleaved with the scenes from Paul Altreides dreams create a thrilling and adrenaline-inducing atmosphere where the audience can see what’s going to happen in the future for the Altreidies. Although Dune is a science fiction movie it also has some really cool action scenes, the explosions, the wars, especially the close combat scenes where all the characters have the protecting shields makes it very satisfying to watch and brings entertaining moments to the audiences. The effects and the cinematography reminds me of some of Christopher Nolan’s movies like Interstellar.
A thing I do not understand is why they kill off so many characters of color. Within half of the adaption, almost all the characters of color have died: Duncan Idaho (Jason Momoa), Dr. Wellington Yueh (Chang Chen), Jamis (Babs Olusanmokun), Shadout Mapes (Golda Rosheuvel), and Dr. Liet Kynes (Sharon Duncan-Brewster) (and Zendaya’s character, Chani, will eventually be killed off as well if they decide to follow the plotline in the book series). I don’t think this is a very smart choice considering the racial political message it sends. Even though the director has said that this movie is a critique of many racist tropes on the silver screen, I am still unable to see how he has trying to portray his commitment to subvert these discriminatory tropes.
With the attendance of lots of Hollywood stars like Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya or Oscar Isaac, the acting in this movie is really good and all the actors gave an amazing performance, especially the chemistry between Rebecca Ferguson and Timothée Chalamet really brings out the love between the two characters. But again, my criticism of the death of characters of color still stands. Hopefully, it will get better in the subsequent movie.

For the blorbo ask: idk, ikevamp?
Been a hot minute since I played Ikevamp but lets goooo
blorbo (favorite character, character I think about the most): JEAN. HE'S JUST SO UGH-So baby. So perfect.
scrunkly (my “baby”, character that gives me cuteness aggression, character that is So Shaped): Torn between Jean and Leo honestly. Leo has the softest, prettiest tiddies expression
scrimblo bimblo (underrated/underappreciated fave): I'm actually surprised I don't see a lot of Dazai stans here. Or maybe it's just the algorithm? Either way I was expecting to see a lot of poetic Dazai fanart considering he seems to be a big thing in Bungou Stray Dogs and among lit nerds. But instead I see a lot more of the Terrible Trio which is fine (Vlad is amazing and Charles is an absolute Meow Meow) but there the Dazai stans at? (Seriously, is it Tumblr's fault?)
glup shitto (obscure fave, character that can appear in the background for 0.2 seconds and I won’t shut up about it for a week) *deep breaths* Wellington. Wellington deserves more to be than just be a bloodthirsty amnesiac. He has the potential to be this witty, sarcastic Englishman who's super Genre Savvy who knows what the fuck's going on and instead of doing whatever Vlad wants him to do he can drag Napo back to England and live their best (second) life together
poor little meow meow (“problematic”/unpopular/controversial/otherwise pathetic fave) Gilles des Rais. Hear me out. Yeah I know he turned into a murdering nutjob but there's just something tragic about his inability to cope with Jean's death. Call me morbid but I do have some fascination with characters grieving over the loss of a loved one. Are they going to cope in a healthy way? Move on? Get pulled deeper and deeper into despair?
horse plinko (character I would torment for fun, for whatever reason): Everybody is up for grabs in my fanfic. Everybody gets the angst paddle whether it's Napoleon, Jean, or Isaac and you too my dear readers
eeby deeby (character I would send to superhell): The Gacha gods presiding over Ikevam. WHY WILL YOU NOT GIVE ME THAT JEANPOLEON CARD ASLKLKDSFSLF
Let's do this again! I love it! (I kinda forget everyone and everything that happens in my fandom so)

OFFICIAL BLOG: Harold Tours The Countryside in Cottage Living
The Sims team has released an official blog for The Sims 4 Cottage Living
I’m in Henford-on-Bagley!
Sul Sul… Is this how it goes? No matter. Hey there, it’s me, Harold the Llama, and before you go about wondering how a llama like myself managed to prepare a blog, I’ll have you know these nails have been trimmed to perfection to reveal the capable keyboard connoisseur that I am. But my motor skills are not what this is about! It’s about my charming home of Henford-on-Bagley.
Sim legends of old say that Henford-on-Bagley was created from the perfect mingling of earth and water… but I’m pretty sure some Sims loved the nearby Cordelia Falls and that the River Bagley runs through it in all of its glory. Hmmm, majestic.
Anywho, in order to get to know more about this charming village, we will have to visit all of its neighbourhoods. Our first stop is Finchwick, where the action happens!… Sort of… in a manner of speaking. Finchwick prides itself as a historically bustling and tight-knit community.
Finchwick is the home of the weekly – yes, weekly – fair in which locals put their skills to the test in creating the most sophisticated and delicious creations, such as pies, as well as show off their most prized animals *cough cough* myself included *cough cough* and oversized crops – trust me, the bigger the better – to be judged, as it is tradition, by the Mayor no less! Winning or just participation will get you a reward, but to be honest, it is all for bragging rights and what is better than bragging rights anyway, am I right?
This neighbourhood hosts the historic square which is also home to the busy marketplace – perfect if you love window shopping – and the village pub – ‘The Gnome’s Arms.’ The marketplace is where you’ll find Goldbloom’s Grocery Shop, home of the best produce!
Now I want some crumpets and jam, the superior option to buttered crumpets – fight your chickens about it, not me. Soulmate Prompts:
Since this is a fic fest about soulmates, we are in need of prompt suggestions! Please send in some prompts that have to do with soulmates! You do NOT have to be writing for this fest to send in prompts!
More info can be found at @soulmatesabroad!
A: The One au. The One is a tv series that's sort of dystopian in that it explores a reality in which you could suddenly apply to this program that will match you to your soulmate and it follows how specific people deal with that.
B: Where you wake up with a tattoo after meeting your soulmate. Larry are vacationing at the same hotel, they meet and then every day for 4 days after they both gain a new tattoo. When they meet again, they realize their tattoos match perfectly. Rope & anchor, compass & ship, heart & arrow, rose & dagger.
C: Ziall soulmates au where their first words to each other are tattooed somewhere on their body. Both of them have the phrase “fuck you” on their arms. Of course the first time they meet they both say...
D: in uni, prof is giving a lecture, his student is his soulmate, figuring it out over the semester
E: reverse Wellington: Larry meet, drunk Louis shouts "soulmate" at Harry, then they get to know each other and fall in love
F: Larry please- soulmates who meet in dreams and appear the way they see themselves so that irl one doesn’t recognize the other because he sees himself as plain/boring
G: Larry please - One of them either doesn’t want to meet his soulmate and has been doing everything to avoid meeting them. He gets stuck in a time loop (like Groundhog Day) until he meets and acknowledges his soulmate.
H: One of them is a surfer, the other is a photographer and they meet somewhere warm. They're 26 and kinda gave up on finding their soulmate but then it happens.
i: any pairing: universe in which soulmates recognise each other by having the same song stuck in their head. cue person a hearing person b humming the song under their breath in location x
J: Larry please - fic where each year you get opportunities to meet your soulmate and live life with them but as soon as the clock hits 00:00 on Dec 31st your memory resets in regards to who your soulmate is. There’s no way to go around this...or is there?
K: A is a hopeless romantic who has always dreamed of meeting their soulmate. Unfortunately their remote location means they see the same few people every day, none of whom is their match. When Character B arrives and A falls in love with them, the question arises: are they soulmates? Or does A just want them to be?
L: Food is love, and supposedly your soulmate's cooking will taste better than anything you've ever eaten before. Too bad Character A is hopeless in the kitchen. Character B is the chef who promises they can teach anyone how to cook-- is that the only reason A finds their food so delicious? Or is there something more at play?
M: Characters A and B are working together on a yacht. They share a room, and as crew they also happen to share most of their working hours and duties as well. Is that the reason they're so drawn to one another? Regardless of their connection, they're both determined to keep it professional.
N: It's not only humans who have soulmates, apparently. At least if the pet psychic Character A has consulted about their dog's depression is to be believed. The psychic claims the pup met his soulmate at doggie daycare. Now A is trying to see if she's right by seeking out every possible dog from the playgroup. Will helping a dog find it's soulmate lead Character A to the same thing?
O: Hybrids aren't accepted many places, but in a few countries they have full rights and equality, even if prejudice still exists. Character A was raised in an anti-hybrid country and is now studying/working in a hybrid friendly place. Character B is the hybrid neighbor who they feel drawn to in ways they've heard are typical of soulmates. The possibility is as frightening as it is enticing.
P: Nontraditonal ABO: it's generally accepted doctrine that alphas and omegas are made to go together. Character A has always been attracted to people of their own secondary gender, and has therefore run away from the concept of finding a soulmate. When they meet character B, who shares their secondary gender, and find that the two of them share a soulmark-- the sign of a true mate --their world is turned upside down.
Q: (larry) They have been penpals for years now, sharing their little creative thoughts with each other. Will they ever meet? A new job, a different city, some crossed paths and fate might help.
R: Louis is 30 and the CEO of his family business in Toronto and he has hired a new assistant, Harry, 27. A lot of sexual tension, business trips, coincidences and ‘if he my soulmate or I just have a stalker and also a big crush?’
S: Strangers to friends with benefits to lovers larry; Louis and Harry has finished college and they both are doing a tour across Europe visiting different countries. They start from different cities in and meet in the second/third country they’re visiting. They get along quickly and have a one night stand because they think they won’t meet again. But they meet again in the next city or in the trip to the next city. Is their connection due to their sexual attraction or because they’re soulmates?
T: Louis and Harry are both Niall’s friend but they don’t know each other, however they meet in Niall’s wedding (with his soulmate) in Ireland (or another country if the author prefer another place for the wedding)
U: Larry: Soulmates have a special connection, they have visions of their more important events of their life - both sad and happy but they can’t see their faces, bodies or their friends/families faces. Louis and Harry know everything important that happen to them but they haven’t met yet, they live in different countries and they know that but they don’t know the country they live in. How will they meet? What will happen?
V: Larry: Exes to lovers - People have their soulmates mark in their 18 birthday. Harry and Louis were together during high school and break up before Louis 18 birthday because person A was afraid of not being their soulmates. Louis goes to travel aboard so they don’t know about their mark. They meet again some years later when they’re in their 20...
W: Larry enemies to lovers: Both of them work for the same company and has the same job position but they hate each other because the first time they met it wasn’t “meet cute”. All their coworkers think they are similar and would make an amazing couple so they try to get them together. Most people don’t believe in soulmates anymore, they think it was a legend or maybe it’s not a legend and they’re soulmates?
X: Untraditional soulmates !! For example, a pairing (or poly) comprised of people who aren’t soulmates but are in love anyway. Maybe their “true” soulmates died or just didn’t work out for some reason. Maybe their “true” soulmates are platonic and separate from the romantic relationship. But ultimately the theme being something like “i am choosing to love this person” rather than the world telling them who to love :)
Y: Character A is a writer who pours their heart and soul into everything they write, though their focus on the soulmate trope is underappreciated. They go away on a writer's retreat to give it one last try and meet Character B, a person who seems to have stepped right out of one of their novels. Is this their soulmate or a figment of their imagination, or have they truly had one of their characters come to life?
Z: In a world where you see in color after hearing the sound of your soulmate's voice, Character A doesn't remember seeing in black and white. When they realize they're different, nobody can explain the reason. It isn't until they meet Character B, a stranger with the same affliction, that they begin to put things together. Or: A and B hear one another's cries as babies, changing their vision from black and white to color before they could possibly have realized it.
AA: Characters A & B somehow keep running into each other inexplicably all over the world. Maybe they happen to study abroad together then have a work conference in the same city then vacation in the same city, etc. Eventually they realize they've been seeing each other all over and maybe the universe is trying to tell them something.
BB: Louis gets a call from an unknown number from across the world. When he answers it, he's asked if he is a Mr. Harry Styles' previous employer and to give a recommendation on his performance. Amused, he pretends he is Harry's old boss and gives a glowing recommendation without knowing who he is. The job that this Harry is going for must be quite intense, because a few days later Louis is asked to fly out to interview in person to attest to Harry's character, where he ends up meeting Harry and falling for him.
CC: OT4/5 platonic soulmates with all the main characters being aro, ace, demisexual, etc. A soulmark appears when you meet a soulmate-- whether they're a platonic, romantic, or sexual soulmate(or sooner combo of the 3) is something each person has to discover for themselves. OT4/5 are grateful to find soulmates who are excited to experience beautiful and deep platonic relationships.
DD: Soulmarks are a trait that most humans have lost. Character A is a vampire who was born in a time when they were far more common. Imagine their surprise when they meet Character B, a human, whose soulmark complements their own.
EE: Larry: An AU where magic exists, Louis has always thought he’s a dark wizard and Harry doesn’t know if he’s a wizard or a normal human. Spoiler: he’s a wizard! They meet when they are 18/20 in a trip and they find more than themselves.
FF: Larry: Louis and Harry are friends of Zayn and Liam but they haven’t met yet. Ziam is having a wedding and their bachelor parties in Hawaii, they meet them.
GG: Louis and Harry haven’t met yet but they meet in a reality show that consists of traveling around the world. The rules of the reality show: Choose a person in the first program to travel with them (Louis and Harry travel together) and spend as little money as possible.
HH: Louis and Harry have been working in the same building for years but they haven’t met officially although they’ve seen each other around. They officially meet when their boss decided to do a work trip to Sydney
ii: Louis and Harry go to Orlando to visit the amusement park. They meet when they’re waiting in the queue for one of the rides and they spend a lot of time together because their other friends are tired of visiting different amusement park and they want to chill.
JJ: Famous/Non-famous larry: “Every time that you and your soulmate are in the same city, you’ll have a mark in your wrist. If one of you leave, the mark disappears” Person A is an actor who loves love but is tiring of two things: fake pr-relationships that make the general public believes that he’s not interest in having a soulmate and traveling. Person B wants to find his soulmate but he knows it’s not in his city so he’s traveling around. They have been in the same place several times but they haven’t met. How many countries will they visit until they meet?
KK: larry please: It is well known that the first time soulmates touch they leave a vivid mark on their partner's skin. Well one morning Louis wakes up with a bright stripe across his cheekbone and no idea what happened.
LL: hl au: harry is a well-known anthropologist from england but he’s requested to join the discovery of an ancient palace in mexico city. louis is a historian that has lived in said city for several years now, so he’s almost a local. the discovery they both take part of includes a blue greeny jewel that holds a legend about soulmates.
MM: Zouiam ot3 matching soulmate tattoos
NN: A and B are childhood friends and have known they're soulmates since they got their marks in their early teen years but they never develop romantic feelings for each other but they Do want to spend the rest of their life together. Bit of conflict / comfort.
OO: Lirry Shrek au. Harry Fiona has always expected their perfect soulmate to break their curse. Liam Shrek is tired of playing the role of the ogre and being rejected by prejuices. They meet.
PP: Zayn is travelling with his van, he picks up some hitchhikers along the way. They stargaze and bond with each other. They find out they are soulmates when some dangerous situation arises.
QQ: ot5 1d era au. A slowly finds out they are soulmates with each of the others while in the bus or travelling/staying abroad together.
RR: Ziam: In a world where magic exists but soulmates are rare, Liam and Ziam met in the same Magical College and have an instant connection. In history of magic, they learn about soulmates and Character A know that they (Ziam) are soulmates but he’s afraid and tries to avoid Character B all the time.
SS: Larry - Louis needs a break of his job and travels to a place where Harry lives and Harry needs a break of his past relationships. They meet in a pub and after too many drinks, they decide to do a road trip around the country. The author decides how people know who is their soulmates.
TT: Zouis: they discover they’re soulmates in Zayn’s wedding. Louis is the boyfriend of one of the best mates
UU: Larry - A reality show is trying to prove that soulmates still exist and Louis and Harry are participants in it
VV: HL Monday AU with Harry as Mickey and Louis as Chloe (but with a happy and not toxic ending please!)
WW: The voice you hear your thoughts in is your soulmate’s but you don’t know who they are until you hear them speak for the first time
XX: You’ve been sketching your soulmate’s face since you were old enough to pick up a pencil, the drawings become more realistic through the years as the day you meet comes near
YY: Red strings of fate au. Person A cuts their string. Person B is devastated to find their string has been cut but moves on with their life and finds love with, you guessed it, Person A who doesn’t believe in soulmates. When Person B finds out that Person A cut their string they’re so angry because they know how devastated they were to find their cut string. And Person A is confused at first because they thought Person B didn’t believe in soulmates either and didn’t realize that it was because they had no way of finding their soulmate. And then it hits Person A that there might be a slight chance that Person B IS their soulmate. So they nervously show up with their string and ask if Person A wants to see if the ends fuse together or not. Up to writer if the ends fuse or not.
ZZ: Person A reads tarot cards and while reading Person B’s cards, Person A can see that the cards are telling them that the two of them are soul mates
AAA: Soulmates can hear what their soulmate is singing. Harry grows up with a soulmate who exclusively sings a weird blend of Oasis, Green Day, and the odd Light Killers song. Louis grows up with a soulmate who mostly sings Fleetwood Mac and Peter Gabriel. They both hate their soulmates taste in music.
BBB: Every person is born with a golden string on their finger attached to their soulmate. Everyone but them can see it but it is considered highly rude to tell people without prompting (like taking away a coming of age experience). Or Harry and Louis fight a lot and everyone looks at them knowingly until one of them cracks and asks someone about it.
CCC: Character A runs a clothing boutique of some kind and one day uses a steamer too close to the smoke detector and sets off the fire alarm. Character B is one of the firemen to respond. Character A is very embarrassed that they did this in front of a super hot fireman, but the firemen are super nice about it. It just so happens they have to come back the following week for an annual inspection of the building and Character A jokes around/flirts with B. Soulmate aspect up to writer. (One idea could be matching soul marks?)
DDD: When soulmates touch for the first time, an electric shock goes through each person. They can’t touch each other without a shock...until they fall in love with each other. Too bad Character A & B hate each other and are not thrilled that when they touch by accident they finally feel the electricity they’ve always been waiting for.
EEE: The color of your eyes act like a mood ring and changes according to your soulmates' mood. The first time you make eye contact with your soulmate, they turn the same color.
FFF: Reluctant soulmates where one or both of them keep their soulmarks covered at all times because they want to fall in love without the person soulmates
GGG: AU where your soulmate smells like HOME only they’re both too dirty and disgusting to smell like anything other than yuck
HHH: Older Larry AU where they’re both in their 40s or older and still haven’t met The One. Embracing this, they each go on a trip alone, but wind up meeting
iii: Fleetwood Mac/ Rumours AU - Larry as Stevie and Lindsey, Ziam as Christine and John. A breakup and a divorce while recording and touring an iconic album. Endgame Larry. Lovers to exes to soulmates.

Not So Dangerous Liaison Masterlist
You weren't sure why you were nervous about your date with Sid. It wasn't as if the two of you hadn't been practically living together for the last three weeks. Plus, you were literally spending the next two months together. But this just felt different. "What should I wear?" You asked Sid as he brought in the last suitcase from the car. You were already rummaging through one of yours looking for your makeup.
"It doesn't matter, you always look nice, but I'm probably going to wear a suit but no tie." That fancy was your first immediate thought. Thank god you'd packed some dresses, per Sid's request, though you thought you'd need them more in Europe than in Cole Harbour.
"Ok so dress it is then." You had the perfect one in mind for the warm summer night. Now you just needed to remember which suitcase it was in. Sid's master bedroom was starting to look like a tornado hit it as the two of you started unpacking things. "You sure we should be doing this tonight? Look at the mess we have."
"Yes, tonight. I have everything planned."
"Planned? I thought this was a spur of the moment thing?"
"Well, I may have made a phone call or two while my mom had you occupied." Oh, he was sly; you filed this information away for later, for you hadn't really seen this side of Sid yet.
"So where are we going?"
"That's a surprise." You started hanging up things in the closet, trying to clean up some of the mess that you'd both made. "I'm going to grab a quick shower." He yelled and you were half tempted to ask if he wanted company, but then the two of you would never get ready.
"Ok, I'm going to finish unpacking." By the time you heard the shower turn off, you had most of your things put away. "My turn," you told Sid, as you walked into the bathroom. He had a towel slung low on his hips and the sight of water dripping off him totally turned you on.
"You should've just showered with me." He protested, grabbing your waist and pulling you close to him, so he could drop kisses all over your body. "I could always go back in with you."
"Sure, but then we aren't going out tonight and you know it."
He frowned and released you. "True," he said and then swatted your ass. "You better get going then." You took a quick shower, then started to get ready beside Sid. It was way too distracting him just standing there wrapped only in a towel, so when your silk kimono robe you had on slipped open a bit, you didn't adjust it, just going about brushing your hair before grabbing the blow dryer. "Are you trying to tempt me?" He asked looking at you through the mirror.
"I'm sorry, what? Can't hear you?" Of course, you could hear him, but you pretended not to over the blow dryer. You leaned to the side drying your hair, giving him a nice view of your breast and smirking at the same time.
"Really (Y/N)?" He laughed knowing your game. "It's not going to work. I'm taking you out tonight, but when we get home…" He let the rest hang in the air before heading out of the bathroom, adjusting himself as he walked out which had you chuckling. It took you about forty-five minutes to finish getting ready, though you were definitely pleased with your reflection in the mirror. "Babe, are you almost ready?" Sid hollered up as you gave yourself one last glance to make sure your makeup was perfect.
"On my way down." With one little squirt of perfume, you grabbed your bag and headed downstairs to meet Sid. He was standing at the bottom of the stairs, in his favorite black suit, traditional white shirt unbuttoned at the collar, holding a long-stemmed red rose. The sight literally took your breath away. You'd seen him in the suit all the time, but this, this was completely different, because this time he was wearing it for you. You smiled at him as you descended the stairs.
"Wow, you look absolutely amazing." He said as soon as your heel hit the last step. You'd chosen a white knee-length lace dress that was form fitting to your body. Your hair was curled in soft waves down your back and you'd kept your makeup fairly neutral with a pale pink lip.
"Thank you. You look very handsome as well." His hand, the one not holding the rose, moved to your hip as he stepped closer to you so that he could press a kiss to your lips. It was a bit heated but also too short for your liking. "You know, I don't normally kiss on the first date." You said playfully.
"Hmm, well I'll consider myself lucky then. This is for you." You accepted the rose that he handed over, bringing it to your nose to inhale its sweet fragrance. "And before you say it, no I did not just pull it out of the ones I already got you."
You laughed, as the thought hadn't really crossed your mind until he mentioned it. "Well, you didn't need to get me anymore that's for sure. You're spoiling me."
"That's the idea," and he gave you a wink before offering you his arm as the two of you headed to the car. The drive was beautiful and Sid pointed out different sights here and there, as well as places he wanted to take you during your time here. It was about twenty minutes later you were pulling into a parking lot by the dock. You looked over and there was a large boat or was it a ship? You weren't sure which was the proper term, but it was beautiful as lights outline its features showing it off.
"Are we going on that?"
"Yeah, hope that's ok?" Ok, it was more than ok. You could tell that he'd rented the whole thing out for just the two of you.
"It's perfect, Sid." He came around and opened your door then led you down the dock to what you now considered had to be called a yacht. There was a small table set up for the two of you, that had a beautiful arrangement of flowers in the center. How he'd made all these plans in such a short amount of time you'd never know. Even though you couldn't ask for a better first date, you couldn't resist teasing Sid just a little. "So is now a good time to tell you I get seasick?" He looked physically ill as he looked over at you, and suddenly you felt bad, but you couldn't contain the laugh that bubbled up from inside you. "Just kidding."
"Oh my god, you had me seriously worried there for a minute."
"I'm sorry," you told him as you patted his chest, and he held your hand there for just a few seconds longer. "I had to do it."
"You know I'll get you back."
With your heels on you didn't have to far to reach up and press your lips to his. "Mmm, I'm sure you will." Just then a man, who you assumed to be the captain came out and greeted you. As you climbed aboard the vessel, Sid reluctantly released your hand so that the gentleman could help you board. There was a small crew and they all had wide eyes as they were introduced to Sidney. You could tell they all wanted to either ask for an autograph or photo, but didn't as they were working. They went to work right away getting the vessel ready to push off and head out. Sid took you to the bow of the boat as it slowly moved away from the dock. The sun was just starting its descent but it made for a beautiful picture as it reflected off the water. "Sid, I can't believe you did all this."
"It was nothing."
"Stop, you put a lot of time and thought into this and I really appreciate it. This has to be the most magical first date I've ever been on." A cute little blush rose to his cheek, as his arms wrapped around you and pulled your back against his chest as you watched the majestic scenery of Nova Scotia.
"Well, hopefully, this will be the last first date for both of us." They may have been Sid's words but it was exactly what you were thinking. If you never had another first date in your life, this one would go down as perfect even though it had only just begun, but then it didn't matter what else happened the rest of the night, because this moment right here was everything.
You shifted in his arms then, so that you were face to face. "I would be one hundred percent ok with this being my last first date, so long as you're taking me on my second, and third, and all those after that." That smile that you loved graced his face, the right side just picking up ever so slightly and you couldn't help but kiss those lips. Your hands glided around his neck as the kiss deepened and you almost forget where you were and that there was probably a crew member watching the two of you. You broke apart, his forehead just leaning against yours as you took a moment to catch your breath.
"Come on, they probably have dinner ready." You made your way back to the stern where you'd seen the small dining table setup before. Sid held out your chair for you, before taking the one that was on the other side and moving it closer. The round table was set so that you could be across from each other, but the beautiful centerpiece didn't allow you to see each other, so Sid made it so you could. After a second, he grabbed your hand, kissing your knuckles. You could tell there was something he wanted to say but then he was interrupted as the chef came out bringing out the first course that he'd prepared.
The chef brought out crostinis topped with gorgonzola cheese, roasted walnuts, and arugula to start with, which were mouthwatering. Second appetizers followed, with a salad and soup after that before they brought a beef wellington that was absolutely to die for. By the time dessert came, you were so full, you weren't sure you could even have a bite of it. That was until he set it down between both you and Sid for you to share. It was a decadent molten chocolate lava cake, with strawberries placed around it for decoration. Sid grabbed a spoon and dipped it into the dessert, then brought it to your lips to feed you. It was actually super cute and something you never expected him to do. Your lips closed around the spoon, and you closed your eyes at its heavenly taste. "Mmm, that's delicious."
"Watching you eat it was the treat for me." You smiled then grabbed the spoon out of his hand to feed him a bite. "You're right this is really good." The two of you fed each other a few more pieces before calling it quits because you were both stuffed. "Dance with me?" Sid asked as the music that had been playing softly in the background became a bit more prevalent. You took his offered hand and the two of you swayed around the deck of the boat. The sun was just setting and you would've given anything to have a picture of the two of you dancing in the twilight on the ship. As if reading your mind, Sid pulled away and asked one of the crew members to snap a few shots. You knew they were going to turn out beautifully as shades of pink, yellows, and blues all melded together to cast a glow on the water. You were almost finished when off to the side something caught your eye.
"Was that?"
"Whale on the port side," one of the crew yelled out as you saw the splash of water just trickle away.
"Oh my god, I've never seen one this close before." Your excitement was hard to contain and you found yourself, grabbing Sid's hand and heading toward the left side of the boat to see if you could see it again. You were scanning the water, looking for signs of where the whale was, as Sid wrapped his arms around you to look as well.
A few of the crew members were up towards the front of the boat, and one of them yelled down that there was a small pod up ahead. The two of you moving effortlessly together to get a closer look. It was then that one of them breached the water, bringing its large body mostly out of the water then splashing back down. You couldn't contain your excitement and were bouncing up and down on your heels; Sid's arm holding you as if he thought you were going to jump in the water with them. "This is amazing," you whispered back to him. There a bright smile on his face, even though he'd probably seen this before many times as a kid, he still shared your excitement. Just then a couple more surfaced their blowholes spraying water everywhere before heading back under the surface of the water. The sky got darker and you watched a little longer, for the whales to again resurface. They did a few more times before you lost sight of them completely. "I can't believe we got to see all that."
"It was pretty amazing," Sid admitted, then nuzzled his face into the crook of your neck.
"I'm so mad I forgot to grab my phone."
"We can come out another time. This is really the best time of year to see them." He told you. "Maybe we can do a whole day trip or something."
"Oh, you don't have to rent out this whole boat again just for me to get some pics, Sid." This date was probably costing him a small fortune.
"I will if it means I get to see you smile like that again."
You linked your hands behind his neck, drawing him closer to you. "You make me smile like this every day, just by being you." He truly did. You never realized how happy one man could make you just by simply being there. It dawned on you then that you loved this man with your whole heart and you wanted to just shout it from this boat, but then this was technically your first date and well that just seemed really awkward. So, instead, you kissed him, pouring all that love you had into the kiss. You weren't sure how long the two of you stayed like that, just sort of making out while the boat sailed around the water. It wasn't until you shivered from the cold, that Sid broke the kiss to rub his hands up and down your arms.
"Cold?"
"At little," you shrugged and he took off his jacket draping it around your shoulder. Immediately, you were engulfed by his heat and reminded of that night weeks ago when he'd walked you back from the restaurant after the whole incident with Christian. This moment was so completely different from then, though that night he'd made you feel so cherished and protected. You still felt all those things right now, only there was so much more and the fact that you loved him just magnified all those feelings.
"We can go inside if you want."
"No, I like being out here with you and all the stars around us." Both of you looked up in the sky, millions of stars twinkling in the night. From the moment Sid asked you out, you'd known this date would be perfect, but it even went beyond that. He moved you both to the back of the boat, where you were shielded a bit from the night air. There was a blanket laying on the cushions for your use, and you sat down covering both you and Sid with it as you watched the sky above you. "Thank you for tonight," you whispered over after he had tucked you into his side.
"You don't have to thank me, (Y/N). I've been wanting to do this for so long now." He leaned down and pressed a kiss to your forehead, before pulling back slightly to look in your eyes. "So, does this mean I get a second date?"
You pretended to mull it over a bit. "Hmm, I mean this one's not over yet, but if you're asking, then I'm saying yes."
"Excellent, then I'll have to start planning again."
You just chuckled before saying, "It doesn't have to be this extravagant you know."
"We talked about this. I enjoy spoiling you remember?" It was hard to forget the conversation that happened earlier in the day, so you simply nodded your head not wanting to ruin the moment by telling him how unnecessary it was. It was close to eleven when the boat finally docked and you had to bid the captain and crew goodbye. Sid was nice enough to sign a few autographs before you left and take a few pictures. It was definitely a thank you appreciated by everyone on board.
Finally, back home, Sid came around insisting on getting the door for you before you got out. You found it funny that he didn't park in the garage, but didn't say anything. He laced your fingers together and then walked you to the front door, which seemed a bit odd. "So, I know this isn't a traditional first date, but I thought we could kind of end it somewhat that way." You reached the front door and he unlocked it but didn't open it. "So, I had a really great time tonight," he started to say, both hands now holding yours.
"Me too."
"I suppose I don't have to ask you out again since I already did that." You both laughed, knowing that even though you'd agreed to a second date earlier; he didn't even need to ask for your answer would always be yes. After your giggles died down, he leaned in and kissed you. It was sweet and only a tad bit heated as you could tell he was trying to stick to his theme of this being the first date. He broke the kiss first and you found yourself trailing after his lips for just one more touch. "So, I'll call you," he said then squeezed your hands and started to walk away.
You were slightly confused but recovered quickly. "Hey Sid," you called after he was about five steps away and he looked back at you with the cutest smile on his face. "It's not my house, but would you want to come in for a drink?" He started back towards you.
"A drink, eh?"
When he was close enough to you, you grabbed his shirt and hauled him close to you. "Or maybe something else instead." You kissed him hard, letting him know what your idea of something else was. He blindly found the door handle opening it and you both stumbled inside causing you to break apart. "Where were you going?" You asked between kisses.
He fumbled in his pocket then, grabbing the car fob and locking it. "Was gonna put the car in the garage, but it can stay out." Sid locked the front door then went back to kissing you before scooping you up bridal style and carrying you up the stairs. "By the way, thought you didn't normally kiss on the first date?"
"I'm making an exception." He set you back on your feet once you were in the bedroom. Hands roaming everywhere. You undid the buttons of his shirt before peeling it off and letting it fall to the floor, while his fingers found your zipper, freeing you from the confines of your dress. He pushed the straps off your shoulders and your dress joined his shirt. Sid kissed your neck, working his way to the swell of your breasts. His hands made short work of your bra clasp, as you undid his belt and pants. He kicked them off then laid you back against the mattress, following you down, rolling you both on your sides. Your hands roamed down his back, then up his chest, as if you couldn't get enough of him and the truth was you couldn't.
"Damn (Y/N), I want you so bad." Sid breathed out, as he lifted your leg over the top of his, flexing his hips into you.
"I want you to Sid." There was no denying the way either of you felt at that moment. You pushed at his boxer briefs, freeing his cock so you could stroke its length. He hissed in a breath at the contact relishing the feel of your fingers working their magic on him. Sid worked his hand between your bodies and down to your panties, slipping them under the waistband and between your folds. His thumb played with your clit as he pumped two fingers inside of you. You knew that he was teetering on the edge just as much as you were. "I need you inside me." And before you could say anything more, Sid flipped you on your back and stripped you of your panties.
He positioned himself between your legs then entered you in one smooth motion. "Yes, Sid, yes." You told him as he filled your body. That familiar rhythm the two of you had was almost instant, each of you knowing what movements would set the other afire. As he picked up his pace, you felt the familiar strings of orgasm start to build and soon you fell off that cliff as your climax hit. Sid reached his high at the same time, spilling inside you. The fact that he was no longer wearing a condom made the whole thing that much more intimate. It was that closeness that had you wanting to tell him how much you loved him, but you weren't sure if he was ready to hear that; so instead, you kissed him tenderly, stroking your hands down his back. You weren't quite sure when would be a good time to tell him, but you knew it would be soon; if only because you weren't sure you could hold it back any longer.

hobart. 🚢
Day 1 - Well I was right. It looks like I’ll be moving to Tassie. Joking but not joking. Since the moment I stepped off the plane on Friday morning, I was inundated with smiles and friendly faces. I very stupidly forgot where I was for a second and bought a one-way ticket via the Skybus only to find out there are only a few running a day (forgot Tasmania is not Melbourne 🤦♀️). I gave my ticket to a little old lady who was willing to wait and it turns out someone else had made the same mistake as me and I suggested we split an Uber into the city. Scott was a local from Devonport and the loveliest human. He ended up paying for the entire $40 Uber fare as it was my first time in Tassie so I was stoked.
Upon arrival, I checked into my gorgeous little hostel owned by the quirkiest of all dudes - Michael. I also got to meet his daughter who showed me around and the family’s two French bulldogs Lilly and Tucker (who are also residents at the hostel…could it get any better?). After checking in, I went and picked up my hire car and drove to Mt Wellington to hike up to the Organ Pipes and the Pinnacle. Note to self…look at a map before you start as I somehow managed a 9km detour downhill and then back uphill. The views were absolutely incredible and the weather could not have been better. I knew I was near the top when I could see the last of the snow melting away. While snacking on a rock right at the top, I met Tran. What a legend. She’s a local optometrist and has been living in Tassie for the last four years. We ended up hiking back down and spent the next 2 hours chatting about life, love and family. It’s like we have known each other our entire lives. I’ve missed these connections with kindred spirits so much. Solo travelling is the best. We said goodbye and exchanged details before I made the trip back ‘home’ (it honestly feels like a home stay).
A quick shower and 45 minute drive later, I arrived in Cygnet. Oh. My. Goodness. The scenery. It was like driving through Lenswood and Summertown but on steroids. The drive out made me a bit teary actually (in a great way). Made me feel like I was back in NZ and god do I miss that place. I visited the Port Cygnet Cannery which boasts a delightful seasonal yet rustic menu straight from their own farm. I would love to go back and spend some time working at the local pig farm and Permaculture garden. The food was unreal. Simple but amazing. I had the best waitress as well. Her name was Vashti. I asked whether she was named after Vashti Bunyan (a 70s artist - if you don’t know her, look her up, she’s amazing). Turns out she was and we had some great chats (she even joined me at my table for a bit). The two chefs at the Cannery are also from Adelaide and used to work at Hentley Farm in Barossa valley. Small world hey! Even smaller world when the lady next to you happens to be Kirsten Bradley who runs Milkwood! I happen to be doing her mushroom cultivation course at the moment so we talked shrooms and I showed her photos of my mushroom babies at home. Life is so cool like that.

TV Series Review: Miss Scarlet and the Duke (2019)
Genre: Historical Fiction/Murder Mystery/British Period Drama
Rating: 10/10
TV Show Review:
I. LOVE. THIS SHOW.
Pretty much this review will be me talking about everything I love this series, just a warning. I hope you love it too, so you can enjoy my blabbering and gushing!
I will do this review a bit differently, since it’s still relatively new, especially here in the US. I’ll talk about my general thoughts, and then I’ll do a “keep reading” when it goes down into spoilers for each episode.
So, here, for the spoiler-free part of my review:
Let me start out by saying that these characters make the whole damn show. Yes, the mysteries are great and all, but it’s the characters in this series, for me, that drives the whole thing. Eliza Scarlet is a masterful main character, and I love everything about her—from her determination, her willingness to fight the crowd to be what she wants, how she’s willing to admit some issues, that she still relies so heavily on her father after he passed away. Her humor is so incredible, and I think she’s just someone I wish I could be. Her feistiness is so wonderful. And then our Inspector Detective William “the Duke” Wellington is… one of my favorite leading men, fictional of course. I like that he’s overprotective of her (sometimes, to funny extents), that he does his job well and follows a lot of the right paths, that he doesn’t seem surprised by much of anything, and that he’s willing to fight even when he’s falling apart at the seams. And their relationship! They are so clearly in love with each other (probably have since that “chaste kiss” when they were teens…), they bicker like a married couple, and though they annoy the living hell out of each other, they would die for one another. I like that their relationship isn’t perfect and they take note of that in the show, but it feels real. It’s one of the most real relationships I have ever seen.
Moses and Rupert are such important characters and I LOVE their relationship with Eliza, their friendships that seem so different, but they just fit. I can’t go much into detail about either of them, or it will spoil entire plotlines of mysteries, but I will say that I love what the story does with their characters, how it gives them breaths of their own, that they become some of the most dynamic characters in the show with so much to them and that take a life of their own. That they feel real and important and interesting, and I love the representation. That’s all I’ll say about them in the spoiler-free review.
Now, the mysteries, were incredible. They kept me guessing through every episode, and I would have some feelings about things/people, but I wasn’t sure how it would get there. At times, I thought of the truth, but figured that they were going to trick me with it (my grandpa always told me that I have a brain for a detective, if I had some training, so that’s fun!). But still, they were so innovative and different from other mysteries that I had experienced. And I liked that each episode felt a bit different—we had a taste of ghost story feeling, even an intense thriller. They were really, really good mysteries, to me at least. And I do love me some mysteries.
Okay, so the costumes, sets and music. MY GOD. It was all SO BEAUTIFUL! Eliza’s clothes were magnificent and they had POCKETS!!! William was way too sexy in those clothes (can we bring those back??? We can leave out the discrimination that came with the time period, but let’s bring back the clothes at least!). Everyone had gorgeous clothes. And the sets were beautiful—those dirty, Victorian, coal covered streets… I loved it! (My mom says she’s not sure why I’m so in love with the dark atmosphere of the Victorian era, but I am!). The MUSIC. Can they just upload a damn soundtrack already? I need to listen to this music all the time! It sounds different and cool and I’m just so in love with it.
THE HUMOR! My god, I had never seen a murder mystery show set in another time that does humor so well. I love how they travel between scenes to make it funnier, the lines they say to one another. It makes me feel like these actors absolutely had a blast filming this show. They were so on point, and some of the funny scenes made me laugh harder than any comedy movie I’ve seen.
As you can see, I’m obsessed with this show altogether. I love it, and I want to watch it over and over. The vibe, the love stories, the characters, every. single. thing. is my jam. I know they’re planning a second season and I cannot wait for it. Ugh. My god. It’s wonderful.
So here ends my spoiler-free review. After this, I’m going to talk spoilers. So if you have seen the show and/or want to read the spoiler-y thoughts, please click on the “keep reading.” If not, see you around after your watch the show! It’s well worth it!
Let me start out by explaining more of my thoughts on the relationship between William and Eliza, because I worried that some of what I had said would give away possibly too much. So here’s that part:
The (hilarious) way that William mutters “oh jesus” whenever he finds Eliza waiting in his office, or the fact that Eliza calls herself his wife (or in one instance, something worse, but to save herself) to get what she wants also feels like a sly to personally agitate him. How that he would toss her into jail/into court when she went against things he said she shouldn’t do (though he released her/got her out at some point) never got old and even funnier to me each time. I told my mom, she was like a toddler—he couldn’t keep her in sight, so he had to lock her out. But I liked that she still argued with him despite it. Their back and forth was perfect.
I will say here, that I have seen people’s comments online how they wish that William was more on board with Eliza’s detective dreams and support her 100% much earlier on. And I get that, that he can seem like an ass at times. But honestly, I think he feels more realistic that he’s a little harder about it in the beginning. Trust me, I love this show and the way they play with characters and storylines, and that they are so forward (I mean, Eliza is so forward-thinking and modern, it’s amazing), but to me, if they made EVERYONE, i.e. William especially, it wouldn’t ground me into the time very well. I like that it was more gradual for him, to fully support her. And actually, I think for a man in the Victorian Era, with his position, he supported her as much as he could. Though he fought her on it at times, he eventually gave up trying to stop her. And I do think, in some respect, he was trying to protect her, because he does care for her. He was a man of his time, in his position, and he is changing. Can we at least give him that? Because, in all throughout history, it took a while for things to change. And it was men like William that started to understand, that started to recognize that, that helped make it happen. Plus, Eliza didn’t let him pull shit all the time, and she did fight him on it.
Now, I’m going to comment on each individual episode with my thoughts. I’ve never done this before so yay! Here it goes!
EPISODE ONE: Inheritance
I knew the weird uncle wasn’t the girl’s uncle. I didn’t expect that it was her husband (I should’ve!! We knew he was a cheat and a conartist!!), but I knew it wasn’t her rich uncle. I knew from the moment he came on screen—I remember thinking, this guy looks too young around his eyes. His beard and mustache look fake. So, I was right to an extent.
I can’t be the only one who was horrified to discover what the police did to women who worked as prostitutes or in dance halls—they could be arrested and searched for venereal disease? Seriously??? For men who were so obsessed with wanting their wives to “stay safe” and “be protected,” they sure were fine with flipping the case when it came to women that they would also gladly pay to sleep with? Why don’t they check the male clients who are PAYING for this industry. It was appalling and horrendous, and it made my skin literally crawl as they tried tying Eliza down to the chair.
On the note of that scene, Eliza calling herself William’s favorite whore to save herself is literally one of the funniest (though, darkly) things—especially in the next scene, when you see the two of them sitting in his office in silence and William is mortified, annoyed, and I think amused at the same time.
I loved how Eliza tricked that bastard husband—she set him up, AND she gave him laudanum to make him pass out? This woman knows what’s up!
Instantly from this first episode, I knew I loved this show and these characters. Eliza shows her charm and wit and humor and smarts. She’s skilled and I love her personality so much. Though I can see how she could be aggravating to others. William absolutely adores her. Rupert annoyed me a bit at the beginning, but by the end—when he asked Eliza to not marry him, I knew I would like him. And Moses! A Jamaican man brings in the race question of this dark, old world, but I love that he likes Eliza and finds her interesting. He’s terrifying, but I think he’s a good, decent man, he’s only trapped in this world because no one will let him be anything else. But he’s such a rich, interesting character.
EPISODE TWO: The Woman in Red
This episode brings in the reality of homosexuality in this world. That it has always been there (damn those bastards who think otherwise), but it has been hidden away. That men and women have to fear for their lives, and also marry people they do not want because they want to not be noticed. I loved finding out Rupert was gay—my mom called that one!—and the friendship he develops with Eliza. That he trusts her to tell a secret that could literally have him killed and ruined. And that Eliza doesn’t even blink, that she’s willing to keep his secret to the grave, and I cried when she basically told him that. It’s quite beautiful that Eliza even seemed to be grateful that he trusted her enough to give her that secret.
Which was used in interesting juxtaposition to the gay man, accused of murdering his lover, and his wife. I understand the woman’s hurt, that she loved this man and it turned out he didn’t love her in the same way. But that didn’t mean her willingness to let him die for a crime he didn’t commit was at all good or called for. With Eliza talking her down, to prove that the woman’s husband was innocent, I think proved that though she was hurt beyond reason, she did love that man who was her husband and didn’t want to see her die. It’s really a hard situation, especially during that time, when people were constantly shoved down their throats that homosexuality was bad. Not that I’m giving her a “it’s okay,” but I can understand the pain and confusion she went through. Especially because she pulled through.
Through this whole episode, we thought it was the wife that had murdered the lover (the other man). I was surprised to find out that he had killed himself, cut his own throat (which I had heard wasn’t possible to do—but my grandpa, who had worked as a detective, told me that is a myth people talk about, that it’s really easy to cut your own throat). That was a shock, and it made me so sad. That he was dying because he was unhappy, because he hated what he was, because of damn society telling him so. I actually started crying, because as someone who is bisexual, I would be condemned in this time during for openly being with men and women, though I couldn’t even compare to people who are gay or lesbian, because the situation is not the same. But I could connect, I could understand. And I hated knowing the pain all those people were in, that a man had killed himself because of what he was, and that another man had to live with that. It truly breaks your heart.
William’s response to finding out the dead man was gay was interesting. I thought his comment “in my line of work, nothing surprises you” funny, but also telling. He didn’t act disgusted, he didn’t mistreat the husband when they questioned him afterward. The show didn’t directly say his thoughts on homosexuality, but I got the vibe that he was “whatever” about it. Like he knew it was there, and he wasn’t condemning it publicly. That gives him credit, in my book.
Another great episode that got deep and beautiful.
EPISODE THREE: Deeds Not Words
Is this show just obsessed with getting right down to modern issues that were also faced in this time, but not as strongly discussed? Because I’m all for it! This episode was all about the suffrage movement. But I liked the take they did on it.
Yes, they spoke out about the treatment of women. That men, white men, controlled this whole world. But I also thought it was interesting that they made this main suffragette not the greatest person. It made everything complicated. Like, everything she said to Eliza made sense, and I found myself cheering with her. But she shot a man in cold blood, she was willing to bomb a whole building of men—even though it seems justified because of what their club represents.
I think this episode was discussing the balance. That there can be change, but when you attack the people who you are trying to change, it may not work in your favor. At least, that was the vibe I got. Not to stoop to their levels, to become just as horrible as them. Her ideas and words were great, but her actions were a bit… skeptical.
Eliza and William’s response were interesting as well. Eliza felt a passion for the cause, William thought it a bit extreme. But, to me, by the end of the episode, they had a common understanding, they had reached a comfortable middle. I think, this show was showing that was how change came. People seeing eye to eye, and then it spreading from there. Of course, William has faults, but I think he’s truly trying. Especially with each episode. And the more Eliza and he grow.
EPISODE FOUR: Memento Mori
We got our ghost episode! I wasn’t even expecting it, it was incredible! A ghostly image of a dead wife that had killed herself reappearing in photos? How wild and cool is that idea!
I didn’t know that the Victorians had a thing where they took photos of their dead loved ones, looking like they were alive (y’all, the Victorians were obsessed with death…), but it’s an interesting concept. Maybe even sweet. I get what they were trying to do, even if it did seem morbid. How I feel about it is, if it brings you peace, then go for it (as long as it’s nothing disturbing or harming anyone).
The twist was one I had a hint of but hadn’t expected the whole thing. I knew the daughter had something to do with it (how disturbed is this poor girl??), but I hadn’t expected that the mother had planned this before she killed herself because she knew the woman and her husband were already having an affair. It was interesting and a creepy twist, but I was all for it.
Still, I loved how we had moments of eeriness and the haunting feeling in the house when Eliza stayed over. I felt scared and freaked, and most people that know me know that I do not like horror. But this was the perfect eeriness, which I do love.
That scene from this episode where William screams at the poor telegram young man to give them the message or he’ll break everyone bone in his body and then being like “are you crying?” was the funniest thing I had ever seen. I laughed so hard that I couldn’t breathe. I mean, it’s terrible, but the way it was done was hilarious and amazing.
EPISODE FIVE: Cell 99
This episode was… dark. I liked that it was set in an abandoned prison, and my god, was it creepy as hell. I loved all the shots of William walking through gave me the chills.
This one felt like a thriller to me. How it was filmed, set up, how everything went down. Except for the hilarious scene when they are both so annoyed with each other (Eliza and William, that is) that they both scream in frustration is brilliant. But otherwise, it took a dark tone that made me feel like something was watching my back. Especially as that big, scary guy came walking down the stairs when William and Eliza were trapped, ready to kill them both. I was nearly screaming at the tv in utter horror.
My mom had called it—and I had a feeling—that Eliza’s father had been murdered, not just drinking himself to death and found in the gutter. And there’s a gang now? How interesting!
The masked man was strange, as well as the forger locked away. But he was shot and killed, and it confused me.
I have a strange confession to make: that whole time with William in his dress shirt (without the coat), with his arm covered in blood, was weirdly…. Hot? Please don’t ask me explain. I have weird things to me. But I think it was also hot that though he was hurt and bleeding, he was gearing up to fight that big, scary man to protect himself and Eliza. I like that kind of shit, so much.
This episode was twisted, and it left me with more questions than anything.
EPISODE SIX: The Case of Henry Scarlet
My mom knew William’s boss was in with the gang! I liked that they actually explored the reality of corruptness in the police force (my grandpa had personal experiences himself, and that was why he left), and they laid it all bare. Despite the things that we are learning in this present day, it’s always been there. Which is horrifying and disturbing. That these police who are supposed to protect us are willing to delve into the corrupt world to bring themselves more power and money. Because that’s what it boils down to, doesn’t it? Powerful men wanting more and more.
I liked that William was okay with the truth unfolding, and not fighting it, trying to prove innocence for his boss. To me, it made me feel like that he knew something was up with that man (just beyond not liking him). For his character, it made me think that he was one of those people that was actually good and good at his job, trying to do the right thing. Even if he got distracted and didn’t give Eliza credit where it was due, and fought some things, he was trying to do what he thought was right. He didn’t kill anyone, he didn’t go after anyone specifically. Though him and Moses had some standoffs because he wasn’t sure about the other man, he gave him some thanks and shook his hand. Which is huge for that time period.
I did suspect William’s buddy. I always felt like something was happening with him, and that he would be the perfect bad guy because he knew what was going on at all times. And it was proven right! Though it wasn’t any less terrible, William having to realize that his close friend at Scotland Yard as the bad, bad guy who killed their boss when things were turning ugly.
But Moses to the rescue! I loved that he swooped in, teaming up with Eliza, and taking the guy out! I love Moses so much, he’s one of my other favorites.
And their ending, with a promise of dinner, of love on the horizon was exactly what I needed.
Lasting thoughts:
Besides all the amazing storylines and characters they brought in, besides Eliza and William’s chemistry and relationship, to me, this felt like a story about a daughter and her father. We see flashbacks of Eliza as a child with her father, how he taught her his detective work, when that wasn’t something men did typically in that time, and how she would still talk to him after he had died. That though she had chosen this profession for herself, it was also some way to connect to her father. Something they had shared when she was motherless and only had him, and he gave her these skills and talents, helped her hone in on them. And once he had passed, she fought like hell to keep it, but make it her own. I liked that their relationship wasn’t perfect, but they loved the hell out of each other. She was a grown woman, who believed in herself, but she still turned to him—a ghost, a memory, or whatnot—when she felt at the bottom.
This series is incredible, perfect and just all around so masterful in so many different ways. I knew from the moment I heard about it that I would love it. And it turns out I was right, but even more than I had expected.
Now, I think it’s time for a rewatch.

Well
Welp, feeling like doing an update because there's been a lot going on to be honest. its one of those weird dichotomies where every day feels like an eternity and there's so much going on and then you look back and you're like oh, ok its just my brain making it difficult and making things take forever but anyway.
LOCKDOOOOOOOWWWWWWNNNNNNN
Lockdown life was good, apart from being thrust into it so suddenly dave left a banana on his desk. Wasn't great to come back to after 5 weeks out of the office - mummified mouldy banana!! Classic. We luckily got our first jab before lockdown started so that was good, and we were reasonably well stocked up on food and were generally a lot healthier this lockdown that last. honestly, there's a level of chill and serenity in lockdown that i just love. the ability to set my own schedule and only work the hours I actually work to get the job done? Amazing. getting 8.5 hours of sleep each night without having to wake to an alarm blaring? AMAZING. getting to go for walks every afternoon? SO FLIPPING GOOD. I love it so much, I really really do. I need this to be my life permanently.
WORK
Work is just ongoing and draining and honestly, coming back to the office was so fucking stressful and it was only one day. Being at home is just the fucking bomb. Pending home decisions, I wanna go contracting I think, but also ideally two part time contracts to have more flexibility? I dunno. You'd think a big 4 would provide variety but it really doesn't and honestly, with Richie leaving, wellington is just a sinking ship. Sean's off on parental leave, Kirstyn is down to four days a week, ben will be gone if he doesn't get promoted (and I don't think he will be tbh). Jack is just muddling along, Nigel wants to swap to consulting as well, Matt's going to be a shit leader in terms of bringing in work so it's just not going to work. and in our wider group it's going to get even more messy with heaps of the analysts leaving and a couple of senior hires too. so I think it's probably time to jump ship in general, pending the home stuff below. Also, coming back after a break again, I'm like, I don't actually like a lot of you? All the people I enjoy here are in other teams and groups, and I'll be sad to leave you all, but like, not enough to stay anyway lol.
Pending the home below, two options are to just going and get a job with a $30k payrise to make up for the maternity leave benefits I'm gunna leave behind when I leave this role - 18 weeks full pay, $100 a week for the first year back and a full year of maternity leave. It's basically 30k post tax which is a bit nuts to walk away from to be honest.
Otherwise the other option is to go contracting. Less security overall but holy shit so much money. If I went in as a project coordinator at the lowest rate to build up a bit of a portfolio I'd need to work 40 weeks of 40 hr weeks and Id basically match my current salary plus the lost family leave benefits and still qualify for govt maternity leave payments. Realistically I could go in as a project manager for $140 an hour ($60 more an hour than the above math) and absolutely smash it at that level as well so ya know, there's a bunch of other info. I like the idea of the flexibility of it and only having 6 months even if its a shitshow and beign able to walk away at the end of it. I really don't want to get a govt job and this is a v govt town which is fine but also, if I can avoid it that would be great. I just know I'm not gunna thrive in that environment.
Need to talk to Dave to get him across the line on the security issue part of that though. I've mostly come a long way in terms of my financial management (thanks YNAB) so I think he'd be ok with it mostly.
So there's a lot to toss up there because......
HOME
We got the reno plans done during lockdown, finally. which was super good. but holy fkn jesus $$$$$$ ++++++++++. The guy is coming around for the final quote on Thursday. We indicatively said $100k total because we're doing kitchen laundry bathroom and toilet. so only the most expensive rooms and when I was talking to him last week he said 'that might cover it' and they're seeing cost escalations of 7-10% a week which is just insane. we're not doing anything structural apart from putting in a cavity slider in the bathroom, and the quote they'll give us won't include flooring since they won't do it.
Meanwhile, the prefab homes I were looking at for our site were $425k fully done. Like, I'm not going to spend $130K on doing up my 1940s ex state house ya know? That's not good cost benefit ratio.
So depending on what that comes out at on thursday we'll be able to make some plans.
We also want to start trying for kids next year and need these renos done first - I am not having kids and no dishwasher lol.
Also we need bank financing so good to be in a permanent stable job for that application. the good thing is we have so much equity we know we can borrow whatever we need, I just don't want to spend that much money on it because it's fkn ridiculous. and if I'm going on maternity leave we need to be able to cover it all on dave's salary and whatever benefits I have as well so there;s a lot of financial planning and spreadsheeting going on at the moment lol. it's fab.
either way. we've got plenty of options up our sleeve. we've got friends who's brother owns a building company so we can talk to them, we've got the garage so we can get things prefabricated even if they're not installed til next year, Dave can get shit at cost through his work for whiteware, there;s plenty of things to like cost control we can do, we just need to know where we're starting from basically. thats the challenging part. but we'll figure it out, its just taking longer than I want it to basically.
We also planted up the vege garden for the spring/summer which was lovely, super jazzed about that. we've finally got the garden to a reasonably low maintenance level where everything is mostly under control and it's such a relief, honestly.
PERSONAL
Man what a shift to lockdown last year honestly. I think the last 8 weeks in particular has just been like, a massive reality check of how absolutely shit the last year was and how fucking glad I am to be rid of it. I spent a week absolutely spiralling 2 weeks ago now and honestly, I don't know how I lived in the state for more than a year. I actually don't know how I did it. and I could not be more glad that I'm finally on the other side of it, for the most part. There's still a bunch of other stuff to work through (hahahahahaha when is there not like damn) but fucking hell its nice to just not be anxious and nauseous and wound up constantly. life is actually accessible. miracle.
My workmate had his bebe - I went round and got newborn cuddles and was like, oh, is this what it is to be clucky? this is odd. so there's that as well. I think we'll probably start trying next year pending renos and jobs etc. If the renos can be done in jan I'll prob just stick it at the job to get the benefits but I dunno. it's a tough call to make really. we shall see. This all assumes we get knocked up without any issues which is questionable these days. I really want to feel healthier before getting pregnant as well, and part of that is losing weight. however, given discussing that is what triggered the spiral we're working on that one slowly.
Also, lets have a moment for counselling, because fkn bless anne and all her hard work honestly. I actually ended up emailing her being like, I;m losing my shit on the monday and then talked to her on thursday. And its so funny because it's such a counselling thing but I didn't realise until afterwards what she'd done but she was like you're clearly not doing well and then the night before dave got a fkn miserable migraine and he was up for like, 2 hrs powerchucking except he didn't make it to the bathroom in time so guess who was cleaning up vomit at 130am trying not to chuck herself but I digress. anyway, not doing well, couldn't even explain why, didn't even have words and super tired and she's like, what lynaire up to this week how's she going with izzy and chat about that and then be like how are you feeling about your body and then 5 more mins of chat about the cat and the chickens and then like bam hard question and then hows it going with x and y and z and its like, it wasn't til I was on my walk afterwards when I FINALLY started feeling marginally better I was like damn woman work your magic for figuring it out for me and helping me reregulate. all over the phone as well since we were still in lockdown. GREAT WORK FRIEND.
and then last week was like totally fucked theoretical discussion about religion and the role it's played in my life and fate vs free will and all this nutty shit but genuinely just a great discussion. She's the best and I love her. thank good for good counsellors. thank god I can afford to pay for it honestly.
Dave and I are just chugging along, god bless that man. I love him. its amazing. I miss having friends close by but understand why they had to move (boooooo f u house prices). Family is pretty chill, still not really talking to dave's parents which is nightmarish but we'll deal with that when we need to. gunna have to go and visit them at some point coz dave misses them and I feel for him, I really do. It's the whole boundaries renegotiation I went through with my family last year post wedding blow up and its just not a fun place to be. oh well. can't fix it for him but also I'm not putting up with that level of BS from either of our families once we have children. not gunna happen.
Either way, life is busy and full and fun and I'm enjoying it. Daylight savings starts this weekend too, its october next week WTF and I'm just waiting for 4pm to find out what's gunna happen to our girls trip. Clearly we cancelled our sept trip to christchurch and akaroa and hanmer springs so my covid travel curse continues. fkn ridic. Still dunno what we're gunna do with $2500 of flight credits coz if we get knocked up theres def no international trips happening any time soon.
thus concludes the almost 2000 word write up of life. hope you've enjoyed it. I'll throw up some pics in a separate post if people care about reno plans. such a good time!
