What you want for glass manufacturing,
A) something to burn
The amounts of Trees that glassmanufacturing has eaten up is insane
(of course today these Glass melting furnaces are heaten different but you said fantasy world so I am going by traditional)
You want big thick deep lush Forests with big lush trees
Or I guess a coal mine would work too?
Today these furnaces are heated with fossil fuels or electricity
But yeah you need fuel
B) sand deposits
For example you can see that sand deposits here are (more or less) close to glass manufacturing
Tumblr media
SOURCE
Tumblr media
SOURCE
And they have been manufacturing glass since the renaissance
C) good import and export oportuneties
Like a river or a harbor
Becasue you need all kind sof stuff for teh glass making besides the stuff for the glass (quarz sand, lime, soda) but also other stuff (gold for red glass, cobalt for blue glass etc ... ) and you want to transport the glass your making away, and rivers where the highways of teh ancient world
If you look at where historically glass was made, at least one of those things but usually two occured
But you are creating your world, so you can have all three if you want to
As for pureties
People in teh past where rather sophisticated in figuring out what something was simply by looking at it, weighting it, tasting it etc ...
-> You can find certain metall deposits through what plants are growing in teh area
I mean, glass making is an old trade
-> The oldest human made glass is around 4000 yeasr old
And quarz sand has a certain look to it
the corns are sharp, they have a certain sheen to them, they have a certain hardness to them etc ...
So just by looking at them you can already tell if it is mostly pure
Plus, NaCl will disolve lime but not quarz, so you can take a handfull, weight it, put it in NaCl, leafe it overnight wash it, weight it again and if it is teh same weight you know it's propably mostly quarz
If not you know there are impureties, based on how much weight is lost you might decide not to buy because it's low quality
etc ...
Then of course you would do a test batch and see how that glass turns out, since there might be other impureties that you then have to figure out the same as with the lime (with different acid of course)
etc ...
Glass manufacturing was always closely related to magic
(same as metal forging)
And the secrets of the trade where guarded carefully
I mean we have all heard of the glassmakers from Murano (venice) that where not allowed to leave unless they had a special permission disobidience was punished by death
-> Venice being at the coast and a major trading harbor also was a good choice because import export
There quarz however came from other places
Two sources for sand were Crete and Sicily. Quartz pebbles were selected from the Ticino and Adige rivers in Northern Italy.
Hope that was helpfull for your worldbuilding :-)
I love glass :-)
Oh, I have to share this wonder, it is a silver automaton looking like a swan on water made of glass
(the water is made of twisted glass rodds that turn and make it look liquid)
I fucking LOVE glass
How do they choose which sand to be the glass and which sand to be the sand in an hourglass... Imagine you and your best friend were two grains of sand and you had to be in the hourglass and your bestie had to be the glass. Ur together but youve never been more apart. A Sick and twisted practice hourglassery is...

A Familiar World
Picture Perfect ——————————————
A short chapter, in which Aiden and Roo find a very pretty field.
The masterpost for AFW can be found here. The chapter post for AFW can be found here.
——————————————
Honestly, this started as an excuse to write some comfort fluff. But! We all need more wholesome content in our lives! So here’s paint dad and his paint cat son goofing around. Enjoy ^^
                                                    ————
White canvas. Green grass. Speckles of yellow sunlight. A dash of cream across a blue expanse. Brushstroke after careful brushstroke, a landscape was taking form. The larger blocks of color were already filled. However, one doesn’t say “the devil is in the details” for nothing. A slow, steady hand and a critical eye were vital to this particular quest. That was one thing the artist had mastered over the years. Capturing the world’s beauty brought him such joy. Thus, Aiden Pingere found himself out in a field, eyes flicking to the forested horizon. Painting might be a bit harder to stop for nowadays, but he wasn’t about to give it up. Not when the light caressed the greenery so sweetly. The questor hummed contentedly to himself as he added more paint to his brush. Ah… he could stay here all day. And they had so far! The field was a perfect place to let Roo romp around. Aiden had asked his familiar to play behind him, but otherwise just… let him run amok. The excited mews behind him made his heart as warm as the sight of a gorgeous horizon. Another round of meows sounded off as he turned back to his canvas. Such a happy sound… Humming thoughtfully, he glanced between his rendition and the field. The grass looked a little too dark. Like it was dusk instead of midday. He needed to lighten it up. “Touch of jade, maybe…?” He mumbled, squinting. “Or pear… ‘s got the yellow I need…” He turned his attention to his palette. There were plenty of colors smeared across it. A smile inducing collage. Jade and pear weren’t there yet, but he could fix that. He set his brush down to wipe off a spot. With the bottom of his shirt, of course. When he was painting, his shirt just turned into a napkin. His own wearable artwork!  Aiden was busy rubbing away paint when something tugged on his pant leg. “Hm-?” He peeked around his palette curiously. A feline familiar stood by his foot. Ah, Roo! He’d been wondering when he’d wander back this way. Aiden waved down at the lil guy. “Hey bud... What’s up?” “Nothin much!” Roo chirped happily. “Jes wanted to see what yeh were paintin’!” His ears were perked up eagerly, gaze full of intrigue. “Yeh been workin on it fer awhile now!” “That I have,” Aiden agreed, chuckling. “You wanna give me some feedback?” “Aww yeah!!! Lemme see!!!” Roo beamed. The familiar threw his paws up instantly. Aiden smirked. What a little ham. Amazing. He scooped him off the ground, ruffling his fur affectionately. Roo squeaked in protest, giggling. Aiden let him get comfortable before turning to the painting. “Sooo… Whaddaya think?” Aiden inquired. Roo’s first reply was a tiny gasp. “Oh!!! Ohhh…” His wide eyes flickered all over the canvas. It was so cool! So pretty! His paws patted Aiden’s arm softly. The sensation drew a fond smile from him. “It’s already so good! ‘S like I could jes jump right in!!!” Roo mewed excitedly. “I love it!!!” The response just made Aiden’s smile wider. “Glad to hear it, roodle doodle. Though I’d advise against the jump. Uuunless you want to try being green,” he said simply. Roo stuck out his tongue, shaking his head. “Nope! I don’t wanna be green! You’re already doin that job for me!” He gestured to the stains on Aiden’s clothes and fingers. “I’m good bein indigo!” Aiden raised a brow at that. An idea crossed his mind. Humming innocently, he moved Roo to one arm. “Alright. Fair. Buuuut…” He smirked, using his free hand to wiggle his fingers mischievously. “What if I want you to join me?” Roo let out another gasp, looking comically offended. “What? How??? Yeh wouldn’t smoosh me on your paintin’!” “Who said I need that paint to make you green?” Aiden teased, winking. As Roo gave another mock gasp, the questor snapped his fingers. His forgotten palette- now wreathed in blue mist- rose up at his side. “I’d say my palette here has plenty to share, eh?” “Nooooo!!!” Roo cried, flopping over Aiden’s arm. “I’ll get lost in the grass!!! An Yeh won’t eveh be able teh find me!!!” “Bold of you to assume that greenies can’t see each other! We’ll be lost together forever!” Aiden sighed dramatically. … a beat of silence passed as the two posed. After a minute, they locked eyes. Roo was the first to start giggling, but Aiden followed soon after. Their laughter rolled across the field in joyous waves.
That night at camp, Aiden held his canvas up to the firelight. A serene smile graced his face. The painting was done now. Long dry, and lovingly signed. The landscape’s beauty captured. But it was the little spot of indigo that really made it a masterpiece. A little laughing cat, bounding freely through the grass. The same cat who slumbered contentedly near the fire. Curled up safe, in a happy dreamland.
Ah, yes. It was a beautiful day. One more neither of them would trade for the world.
