Landslide | Mark Lee

Mark helps one of his kids press their palms onto the wall. When they release their palm, pink paint remains, making a sort of leaf to the tree branches painted onto the wall.

“Now write your name,” Mark advises another kid, whose orange paint had already dried.

“G-R-A-H-A-M,” the boy writes out with a large permanent marker. “Can I take a picture? For my mom?”

All the rest of the children begin to shout their agreements, also wanting to bring home a picture for their parents. Mark grabs his yellow Polaroid camera and takes a picture of each handprint.

He keeps all of the pictures in the chest pocket of his denim jacket. “Okay, guys— to the sink! Whoever has the cleanest hands gets to help me pass out snacks!”

“Why are we having snack time so early?” It’s Graham that asks, the little one always eager to be around Mark.

Mark ignores the boy’s paint covered hands poking at his clean jacket, and answers him as politely as he can. “Mr. Lee forgot his lesson plans today, so we’re going to watch a movie instead.”

“A movie?” Graham’s eyes widen.

“Yep,” Mark giggles. He crouches down to Graham’s level and whispers, “You wanna pick it?”

“Nature Nut!” Graham cheers almost immediately, causing Mark to wince.

Ah, yes, the wonderful little DVDs of a lonesome man teaching the watcher about bugs and weird types of slugs. Mark actually has the entire collection, and Graham happens to adore them just as much as Mark did when he was a kid.

“Alright, go wash your hands and I’ll get it started.”

It’s a little girl named Hana who cleans her hands the best, so she passes out organic fruit gummies to everyone while Mark puts in the DVD.

While they watch the video, Mark checks his text messages.

There’s one from Taeyong: “I’ve already got Haechan on the couch. Sorry, man. You can have the floor, but it’s not gonna be comfy :(“

Right. Mark forgot that Haechan lives in the same complex as him. His apartment is probably just as flooded as Mark’s is. Now if the landlord would just answer his calls and help him... maybe this situation wouldn’t be so stressful.

Mark didn’t forget his lesson plans; they’re just submerged in his bedroom with everything else Mark has left lying on his carpet. And maybe it’s his fault for not buying more storage bins, but a studio apartment can only hold so much stuff.

Serves Mark right for doing his lesson plans at home instead of at the school like most of his fellow kindergarten teachers.

He lets out a quiet sigh, careful not to disturb the children. He only has a short list of friends left to ask, and while he doesn’t think they’ll mind him asking, he really hates to put anyone in that position.

Besides, most of his friends have roommates or significant others and Mark doesn’t want to ruin their routine. He’d hate to intrude. And he could always sleep in his car for a few days, but the amount of stuff he had to pack because of the flooding has barred any chance of a good night’s sleep.

The video ends, and Mark gets the kids seated with coloring pages until their parents arrive.

One by one, he I.Ds the parents and tells the kids goodbye, helping them put on their coats and take home whatever library book they picked out earlier.

Finally, there’s only one kid left, and Mark is a bit embarrassed of his hyper-awareness to Graham. It’s not even his fault, really. Graham just has a beautiful mom, who happens to be Mark’s beautiful friend, and sometimes Mark gets eager to see you during pickup time.

Whatever. It’s no big deal.

The kindergartener already has his coat on. His curly brown hair is almost unruly as he continues to work on his coloring sheet.

Mark pulls at the hem of his sage sweater sleeves and wonders if his hair looks okay. Maybe he should invest in a little desk mirror; or maybe that’s vain.

“Hey, Mark! Sorry I’m late!” You rush in, holding on to your leather messenger bag. You fix your glasses before they fall off the bridge of your nose, and Mark is so focused on the movement that he almost forgets about your child.

Until said child is scolding his mother. “Mom! You have to call him Mr. Lee! It’s rude to call him Mark!”

“Your mom is an adult,” Mark reminds Graham (as soon as he finds his voice.) “Since she isn’t a student, it’s okay for her to call me Mark.”

Graham pinches his lips together, and then shrugs. “Fine. Mom, we watched Nature Nut today.” He runs up to you and wraps his arm around your middle. “Can we go to the park and look for slugs?”

“Sure,” you giggle. “But we need to get home soon, okay, Bud? I have to make dinner and then we have to clean up the mess we made last night.”

Graham turns to Mark and smiles naughtily, like the trickster he often is. “Mom said I could tear up her papers last night. She said it’s There-pee.”

“Ther-a-py,” you emphasize for the five-year-old.

Mark studies your face, and he can tell that you seem a little more stressed than usual. “Therapy, huh?”

You smile sheepishly. “Well, when your son catches you tearing up old love notes, you have to let him in on the fun, right?”

“You are a team,” Mark acknowledges. He wants to ask more; wants to dig into your heart and extract whatever is hurting you, but your son is standing between the two of you, waiting for him to say goodbye. Mark clears his throat and picks at his sweater again. “Anyways, uh, text me tonight? Let me know you two got home safe. And, I’ll see you both tomorrow.”

“Yeah,” you breathe. You smile at him and then take Graham’s hand. “Thanks, Mark. I’ll text you.”

Mark spends the night at a motel down the road. He texts a few of his friends and hopes for good news in the morning, or at least a confirmation from his landlord.

When you text him, a little selfie of you and Graham, holding up what looks like microwaved s’mores, his heart grows fond, and he forgets about his own problems for a moment.

Life has never been very easy for you. From the get-go, you have always been destined to fail, growing up with an absent father and an overworked mother. With a dead-end dream like yours (writing, of all things), it’s no wonder you clung to what little breaths of freedom you had.

He was handsome and bold, with a carefree smile and brown eyes that mirrored the sun. The lead singer of a band, with a voice like chimes. And you fell just as hard as one of your many protagonists. Perhaps the mistake always lay in the fact that you put too much fantasy into reality. You have always romanticized the littlest things, and that comes back to bite you more often than not.

You never expected one: to get pregnant your senior year of high school, and two: have to go through it alone.

Of course, most people you come to love leave eventually. It’s something you have always remembered; something that sticks in the back of your brain like gum to the bottom of your child’s Spider-man skechers.

Graham is the only constant in your life. Though you’ve been blessed with a decent job editing for a webazine company, and you can work from home more often than not, Graham is the real thing that keeps you alive.

He’s the most precious boy, with brown curls and big brown eyes. He favors his father, and though that should deter you, it reminds you of innocent days, and it gives a new meaning to brown eyes. Graham is not his father, and he never was.

Graham certainly got his love of learning from you. Though he likes science more than writing, you adore how eager he is to always get to school. It helps that Mark is his teacher.

Mark’s been your friend since freshman year of highschool, when the two of you both took the same creative writing class the local university offered. Though the two of you had differing end goals, you often studied together and encouraged each other. He was there when you found out you were pregnant, and he was there when you found out you’d be raising your child alone.

Now life comes full circle, and you see him twice a day. You could go out on a limb and say he brightens up most mornings, but you would still give that slot to your son.

Mark is standing at the doorway now, greeting all of his students and helping them take off their book bags and coats. He’s wearing monochrome today: red pants, a red sweater, and red shoes.

Graham lights up almost immediately, and you are thankful today that you decided to dress Graham in his red t-shirt. “Mom! We match!”

“I know,” you grin, squeezing his hand.

Mark glances at Graham, and then you. His cheeks showcase that same pink hue they always do, and while it should clash with his red garments, it doesn’t. “Hey, Mark.”

“Hey,” he grins, cheeks full at the sight of you two.

Graham spreads his arms and waits for Mark to help him take off his jacket. “Do you see that we match, Mr. Lee?”

“Yo, that’s awesome, Little Man!” Mark gives Graham a fist bump that seems to appease him, and you wait for Graham to run to his friends before addressing Mark.

“How have you been?”

Mark sighs. He brushes his hair away from his eyes. “Okay. My- uh- my studio apartment flooded so I’m staying at a motel until my landlord can get me estimates on when I can come back home.”

“That sucks,” you frown. “You know, if you need a place to stay, I have a pullout couch in my office. And obviously, Graham wouldn’t mind.”

Mark pales. “Are you serious? I didn’t mean to suggest anything, Like I know you work from home and you need your office.”

“And you’ll be at school until three,” you say. “I’ll work then. C’mon, Mark. I don’t like knowing one of my friends has no place to stay.”

Mark bites his bottom lip and scratches the back of his neck. “Yeah. Okay. I’ll drive over after I check out of the motel.”

“Great!” You smile. “I’ll order pizza.”

"Graham, clean your room," you say, struggling to push your desk against your office wall. "We're going to have a guest for a few weeks."

"Mom," Graham whines, "They aren't going to look in my room."

You begin to take the cushions out of the spare couch to start setting up the pull-out bed. "Mr. Lee is coming over, Graham. Don't you want to show him your collections?"

Graham's brown eyes grow wide. "Mr. Lee? You didn't tell me he was coming!"

"He's going to be staying with us for a little bit, okay? So I need you to be on your best behavior."

“Can I show him my worms?” Graham asks, alluding to the compost bin in the small backyard of your townhouse.

“Yes,” you say, thankful that he isn’t putting up much of a fight toward cleaning. You’re also thankful he isn’t asking any questions, as Graham always seems to have a few at the top of his tongue.

Graham cleans up his room quickly. You know for a fact that he’s just shoved all of his toys under his bed, but it’s enough until the weekend, when you’ll have more time to help him organize.

The little guy hoards rocks like no one’s business. You curse the day Mark decided to teach the kids about geodes.

“Wanna help me make up Mr. Lee’s room?” You half-yell, while grabbing spare bedding out of your linen closet.

Graham’s little footsteps are heard before he answers, and soon he’s at your hip with a quick, “He can have my Frozen pillowcase!”

You hesitate to tell Graham that his Frozen pillowcase is currently on one of your pillows, and you can’t give your guest a dirty pillowcase. “That one is in the wash, Buddy. Why don’t we give him your Spider-Man one?”

“So he matches my pajamas!” Graham is easily pleased, and he even takes one of his stuffed bears to add to Mark’s made-up bed. (“So he doesn’t get scared at night.”)

By the time the pizza arrives, Mark is just behind, so you keep Graham busy with a slice of cheese and a glass of diet pepsi (only half of a can, and only because it’s a special occasion) while the two of you bring in Mark’s stuff.

He surprisingly didn’t bring much, and when you ask about it, he grimaces. “My studio is pretty small so a lot of my stuff was on the ground and got mildewed. Other stuff was in bins so I just left it there. I only need clothes and my lesson plans, anyway.”

“Well, here’s the desk and bed. It’s not much, but there’s a lock on the door in case Graham ever gets too inquisitive — bless him — and curtains so the stupidly bright sun won’t wake you too early.”

“Those both sound like personal experiences, Y/n,” Mark teases. He takes off his jacket and throws it on the bed. “Yo! Spider-Man?”

“Graham picked it out,” you say. “He also relinquished one of his bears to keep you safe in the middle of the night. His words, not mine.”

“He’s so cute,” Mark mentions offhandedly. The fondness in his tone takes you back a bit. Not because the phrase isn’t true, it’s just that most people find your son annoying before they find him endearing. The change of tone is nice.

“He is,” you say. “And he’s dying to show you his room after we eat dinner.”

Mark gives you that same lopsided smile he often had in high school. Part of your brain shifts to his personal life, and you wonder why Mark himself isn’t in a romantic relationship. Not that he has to be, but the both of you are getting older, and Mark has always been one to express a fondness for having his own family one day. Maybe he just hasn’t found the right person.

It isn’t until Graham is peacefully in bed — after a very chaotic reading of Goodnight Moon by yours truly, and an argument that Mr. Lee cannot, in fact, sleep in the same room as him — that you actually have a chance to show Mark around the house.

“Here’s the guest bathroom. Graham almost always uses the bathroom in my room because he likes looking at the big tub. He will beg you to play with him, but if you’re busy don’t feel guilty telling him no. He knows what no means and he’s good about playing by himself.”

Mark giggles. “Okay. I don’t mind playing with him, though.“

You show him around the kitchen, where you left little spaces for him in the pantry. You show him the garbage bags and the T.V. settings and the list of compostable ingredients. “And also, please come and go as you please. Like, I completely understand that you’re here temporarily and you aren’t a babysitter or anything like that. I don’t expect you to be in charge of Graham any time outside of school.”

Mark blinks. “But if you ever need time away, you can ask me. I don’t mind babysitting.”

“I know,” you smile. “But Graham is my kid. I don’t need time away from him.”

You’re lying. Mark knows it. You’ve been in this single parenting thing for five years and you aren’t about to reach out for help now.

“Anyways, if you have any questions just ring me or ask me,” you say. “I’ve got to get to bed. Goodnight.”

“Thanks, Y/n.”

Mark thinks it’s sweet the way Graham insists on making his own breakfast.

You’re already up when Mark gets out of his (temporary) bedroom with his clothes tucked under his arm. You’re busy arguing with Graham. “You can’t fry your own omelette for the last time.”

Mark quirks an eyebrow at your exasperated face. You look stressed beyond belief, even though the day has just begun.

Mark tosses his clothes back in his room and walks into the kitchen. “Hey, Graham! Do you want to show me your rock collection?”

Graham spins on his sock-clad heels, eyes bright at the thought of seeing his teacher. “Mr. Lee! Yes! Let’s go!”

He grabs Mark’s hand with ease, leaving you room to finish making breakfast.

Graham’s room is fairly simple. The small wooden bed is covered in a green quilt, and beneath that, frozen-printed sheets that certainly don’t match. He has a tub of stuffed animals shoved against a small dresser.

Mark gets distracted by the framed picture on top of the dresser. It’s a picture of you and Graham’s father, a few months before you got pregnant. He’s smiling, and you’re holding up a peace sign. It makes Mark feel a bit sad, knowing that Graham’s dad never stayed around to see how wonderful he turned out to be. Then again, a lot of people in your life left as soon as they found out. In high school, no one wants to be friends with a teenage mother.

Mark reckons that if he had a family like this, he’d never take them for granted.

Graham pulls out a gemstone. It’s a murky green one that Mark has let him take home from class. “Do you remember this, Mr. Lee?”

Mark grins. “Yeah, bud. Thanks for keeping it so safe for me.”

Graham beams. He grabs Mark’s hand and pulls him towards his dresser. “Can we match? I want to look like you.”

Mark feels his heart swell. He wants to smother the young boy in affection, but he doesn’t want to cross a line. He’s your friend, sure, but he’s also Graham’s teacher. He can’t coddle Graham more than the other children. He already has a godchild to coddle. “I’m wearing yellow today. Do you have any yellow clothes?”

“Let’s look!” Graham yanks open one of the drawers and begins pulling out the articles of clothing one by one. “No, no, no... Here!” He finds a pair of yellow overalls, folded amongst the mess he made. “I’ll wear these!”

“Let’s clean up first, okay?” Mark grabs the overalls. “So it’s clean when you come home from school.”

Graham, looking like the last thing he’d ever want to do is disappoint Mark, begins to pick up each shirt with obvious intent. He tries to fold them, and does a somewhat decent job, so much so that Mark leaves it, thinking you’ll find it endearing rather than annoying.

He really loves that about you. He likes your patience with Graham. You’re so young, and in reality, he squashed so many early dreams of yours. No matter your lot in life, you never blamed your child. Mark thinks that’s why Graham is so open, so adaptable, so endearing.

He helps Graham get dressed and leaves him in his room so that he, himself, can get ready.

When he emerges from his shower, hair wet and clothed in yellow, he smells something amazing.

He doesn’t want to intrude on your morning with Graham. He already feels too indebted to you already.

“Have an omelet,” you say. Wisps of hair cover your face. You place a plate down in front of him.

Graham is already eating his omelet, slowly, while flipping through a picture book. He sounds out words he recognizes, but stays silent the rest of the time.

Mark takes out his phone and scrolls through his instagram feed just as your own phone begins to ring.

“Shit,” you curse, and then immediately apologize to Graham. You press the red button and tap anxiously on the tabletop.

“Everything okay?” Mark asks.

You run your hands over your hair and let them rest on the back of your neck. “Yeah is just—“

The phone rings again, and this time you pick it up. “What do you want? ... Why would you tell me that? ... Why should I care? ... Please stop contacting me, okay? Goodbye.”

You slam the phone down and leave the room. Mark watches you disappear down the hallway, sniffling.

“Mommy is upset,” Graham says. He looks at Mark, lip quivering. “At me?”

“No, Buddy! Of course not!” Mark reaches over the table to ruffle Graham’s curls. “Never at you.”

“When we tore up paper, she was crying.” Graham fiddles with his book page.

Mark wonders why your ex’s actions are being brought up five years later. Last he heard, you had fully healed from the breakup long before Graham’s first birthday. But now he’s about to be six, and you're suddenly upset?

He’ll have to ask you about it soon.

“Are you ready to go to school, Buddy?”

“Yeah!”

You cradle your face in your hands and try to ease the tears back in. You’ll never get this article proofread and sent if you can’t see the keys.

The door opens, and Graham runs in just in time for you to finish wiping your eyes. “Hey, kiddo! How was school?”

“Mr. Lee let us finger paint!” Graham holds up his palm, covered in dried paint, and grins brightly. “Can I have gogurt?”

“Yeah bud. Why don’t you put something on the T.V.? You can have your snack in the living room today.”

“Yes!” Graham takes blueberry gogurt out of the fridge and — after getting you to tear it open — runs into the living room. Sneakers and backpack still on.

Mark trails behind, clutching a messenger bag to his chest. “What’s going on?”

You sigh and close the laptop. The manuscript will have to wait. “Ben called. About a week ago. His girlfriend is pregnant. Called me to tell me he wasn’t going to leave her— like that would heal what he did to me. Then he called this morning to tell me they’re engaged.” You burst into tears then, and you feel so pathetic for doing this in front of your old schoolmate, that you hide your face behind your palms and allow your shoulders to shake. “Why weren’t we enough? Why wasn’t I enough?”

Mark scoots one of the chairs in front of you and sits, leaning his elbows on his knees. “Hey. Look at me.” With gentle hands, he grabs your wrists and pulls them away from your face. “It is not your fault he left.”

“But it has to be me in some way,” you retort. “He must not have loved me. Something, because now he’s going to raise her child after he left mine. Graham deserves a dad.”

Mark places his forehead against yours. The two of you used to do it all the time in school, mostly with immature giggles in the spaces between, but now it’s heavy with intention. “Graham has not felt even a little bit unloved in your care. You are all he needs, okay? You’re amazing.”

You nod, head still pressed to Mark’s. “Yeah. Okay. Sorry for getting too emotional, there.”

“Be as emotional as you want,” Mark says. “I’ll be here to balance you out.”

Your heart stutters at the words, like maybe they mean something more than he’s letting on. Of course it’s stupid to think Mark Lee would ever even consider you, but just the knowledge that he cares makes your soul feel a little lighter.

“I’m a mess,” you stutter, bringing your fist up to wipe at your nose.

“Nah,” Mark grins. He runs the pad of his thumb across your cheek and grins. “You’re alright.”

“It’s snowing!” Graham wakes Mark up by jumping on his chest.

Mark sucks in a breath, winded at the sudden weight, and grabs the boy, lifting him off of his chest and onto the mattress. “Hey, Buddy. Let’s not jump on sleeping people, okay?”

“Okay,” Graham says. He’s already lost interest in Mark, now crawling off of the bed to open the blinds. “Come look at the snow!”

“I see!” Mark rubs his tired eyes and checks his watch. “We might have a snow day, Graham.”

“Yes!” Graham pumps his fist into the air. “Let’s go tell mom!”

You’re sitting on your bed, chewing on a red licorice rope and flipping through a fashion magazine. You look up when Mark and Graham enter.

Mark likes seeing you like this: the domesticity of you in the morning, lazy and true. His chest sparks when he thinks this may be one of the only moments he can capture you like this, so he intends to commit the sight to memory.

“Did I hear snow day?” You grin at Mark, childlike wit in your own eyes — the same as your son’s.

“Looks like it.” Mark rolls up the sleeves of the sweater he slept in. “You want pancakes? I make some mean chocolate chip pancakes.”

You shift your gaze away from his arms and clear your throat. “Uh, yeah. Just let me get dressed and I’ll help—“

“No need,” Mark insists. “Enjoy your quiet time. Graham and I will make the most delicious pancakes you’ve ever tasted.”

“With lots of chocolate chips!” Graham shouts.

You give him a pointed look. “But not too many.”

Graham huffs. “But not too many,” he repeats.

Momentary splashes sound from your bathroom, followed by Graham screaming “It’s a dragon! Run for cover!”

Mark giggles from his place on the couch. He’s got mushroom-patterned socks on, and he’s tucked up into the cushions, nursing a can of Monster. “How does he still have so much energy?”

You sigh and pull your beanie down over your forehead. “You’d think a snow day would tire him out. Thanks for constantly carrying him up the hill, by the way. I know you’re a teacher, but sometimes I forget how good you are with kids.”

“I do have a godson,” Mark reminds you.

“But Mikey is a baby,” you say. You only know the baby’s name because of Mark’s constant snap stories about him.

“Most babies and kids want the same thing. Affection and attention.” Mark scoots over to the edge of the couch and pats the cushion.

You sit next to him. “I guess that’s true. You’re really good with Graham. He’s not this open to other adults.”

Mark is clearly blushing now; you can see his pink cheeks even in the light of the television. “He’s great in class, always helping the other kids.”

“He wants to impress you,” you say. You pop open a can of orange soda and take a sip. “He thinks you’re just the coolest guy.”

Mark laughs and shakes his head. “Didn’t you hear, Y/n? I’m handsome and cool.”

“Oh, of course,” you nudge his shin with our own sock-clad foot. “How could I forget? Mr. Ladies Man in high school.”

This makes Mark blush even harder, because he most certainly was not a ladies man in high school. In fact, he was a nerd in all senses of the word, part of the debate club with a few other boys. He had a few dates here and there, but nothing ever stuck.

“Shut up,” he mumbles. “My time is gonna come.”

“Hasn’t it already?” you ask before you can really process your own words. But of course he knows that he’s grown into his face, right?

Mark is positively handsome, eyes bright and lashes long. He’s so warm and comforting to you. He must be just as comforting to everyone else.

“What do you mean?”

“You’re handsome, Mark,” you say plainly.

“You mean that?”

“Of course I do,” you say. “Why would I lie?”

Mark opens his mouth, perhaps to call you out. To tell you you’ve been too honest, but he’s interrupted by your son.

“Mom! I’m ready to get out now!”

“I should go,” you say, still looking at his eyes.

“Yeah,” he says. His sweater has small spots on the shoulders where snow has fallen and since melted. He shivers.

“You should take a shower. You’ll catch a cold.”

“Okay,” he whispers. “Yeah, I’ll do that.”

Haechan comes over the following Saturday night to hang out with Mark, and you’re surprised at how much he truly hasn’t changed since high school.

He’s still got infamously perfect eyebrows, and his voice is still high despite its blunt sarcasm. “Nice place.” He raises his brows as he looks around.

“Who are you?” Graham is sitting at the kitchen table, watching Minecraft playthroughs (kid-friendly ones you’ve watched through yourself) on your phone to entertain himself while you clean.

“I’m Haechan, Mark’s friend.”

“This is Mr. Lee’s friend from school,” you say, detailing your words so they’re easier for your son to digest.

Graham stares at him for a moment, not quite judging but not quite accepting either. “Okay. Do you want to see my rock collection?”

Haechan looks genuinely excited, and accepts before you can come up with an excuse for him. Graham tells Haechan to stay in the kitchen while he grabs all of his rocks.

“How have you been?” you ask the taller man. “Like, with the flooding and everything?”

“Well, I’m on a couch at Taeyong’s, which is good since he doesn’t charge rent. But that means I’m near Mikey, and that baby has some lungs.”

You laugh. “I remember when Graham was a baby. I was so young, and my mom told me it was my responsibility to wake up and take care of him whenever he cried in the middle of the night. I was so pissed at her for making me do that, but those were some of the best nights to bond with him.” You realize you’re rambling and shake your head. “Whatever. Baby screams are loud as hell.”

“You can say that again. I’ve been talking to my friend Johnny about taking his spare room and paying rent. I dunno how many more sleepless nights I can take.”

“Why would you need to pay rent if you’re just crashing?” You wipe down the kitchen table to keep yourself busy.

“Didn’t Mark tell you? Our landlord is in heaps of trouble because the pipes weren’t up to code and that’s why they busted. The damage is basically too expensive to fix, so we’ve got to find new places.”

You stop cleaning. “Mark didn’t tell me that.”

“Oh.” Haechan scratches his brow. “He probably didn’t want to worry you. He feels really bad that he’s stayed with you this long.”

“It’s only been a month or so,” you counter. “Besides, Mark’s a great housemate. He cleans and keeps Graham occupied. Plus, now I have someone to watch corny game shows with.”

Haechan grins. “Oh. Okay, I get it.”

“Get what?” Mark, finally out of the shower, steps into the kitchen and immediately tackles Haechan in an energized hug.

“Nothing!” Haechan’s voice cracks

You shoot Haechan a weird look, and change the subject. “Where are you guys going?”

“To play video games at Johnny’s.” Mark says, and the thrill in his voice makes you think of high school. Of the debate team bus rounding the corner. Of you standing there, waiting to congratulate him with a big hug and a frosty from Wendy’s.

You miss it. “Have fun, okay? I’m probably going to tuck in as soon as Graham does, so just let yourself in.”

“You’re leaving?” Graham comes in, and his arms are filled with smooth and rough stones and gems he’s both found by himself and bought at random general stores while traveling.

“Not before I see your rocks!” Haechan says with so much enthusiasm, you think he’s telling the truth.

Graham giggles and drops the rocks onto the ground. Of course, he wants your guest to sit on the floor and count rocks. You’re almost embarrassed.

“ ‘ Okay, Y/n?” Mark laughs at your expression. Then he places his arm on your shoulder, thumbs the skin of your upper arm.

And once again, it’s high school. It’s senior year graduation and Mark is the only one who congratulates you. It’s his comforting touch, him coming over in the middle of the night after you texted him a picture of your first sonogram. It’s that same comforting touch. That little “I’m here,” and it melts you on the inside, leaves you in the shell of an eighteen girl again. Scared, and worried, and a little less alone.

“Yeah,” you manage. “I’m okay.”

The television plays Cartoon Network reruns on a low hum. Mark is curled up in a blanket, nursing a bottle of water and thinking over Haechan’s words.

You’ve liked her since high school, dude.

Which is a complete lie. Seriously, Mark didn’t have a crush on you in high school. He would know if he had a crush on his best friend. You’ve been his friend since freshman year, and that’s all you’ve ever been.

Now in college, it was different. In college, Mark was alone in a dorm with Taeyong, and you were one of the only people from high school he stayed in contact with. In college, he would bring you your favorite snacks and drinks, and other things you would forget to buy because you were a part-time student and a full-time mom. In college, you would pull all-nighters with him, working on your exams while Graham was asleep, then using energy drinks to get through the next day.

Mark even remembers the time your mom caught the three of you fast asleep on your rug, with unopened monster cans and an empty milk bottle beside you.

Throughout your entire pregnancy he was warned not to stay friends with the pregnant girl — it’d be too much for him, he wouldn’t want to become the new father, and all kinds of other stuff people would mumble to him when you weren’t around.

But you never expected him to be anything other than your friend. You never asked him for the help he gave — though you thanked him always — and you never once assumed he’d take the role of Graham’s dad.

And now… now he finds himself wishing you would.

“Mr. Lee?” Graham creeps up without him even realizing.

Mark jumps, sets his water — and thoughts — aside. “Hey, Bud. It’s really late. What are you doing up?”

Graham sniffs, and Mark realizes that the boy is crying. “I had a nightmare.”

Mark holds out his arms before he can think, and lets the five-year-old crawl into his lap. He wraps them both in his blanket and turns the television up just a little more. “Was it scary?”

“You left.” Graham says, voice less watery, like he doesn’t know the weight of his words. He’s focused on the rerun of Adventure Time that’s playing. He’s not even remotely interested in his nightmare now, with his tears dried up, and his eyes drooping back towards slumber.

“I’m going to leave one day,” Mark says, because he thinks it’s important that Graham knows.

“You should stay with me and Mom,” Graham says. He yawns. “We like you so much!”

Mark’s heart stutters. He tries not to think about it.

When Graham’s bed is empty the next morning, you freak out. He’s always in his room in the morning. Even if he wakes up before you, he stays in and plays with his toys.

You’ve already got your phone out, and your mother’s number called, when you walk into the living room.

Relief floods your system. Mark and Graham are asleep on the couch, snuggled up serenely like they didn’t just cause you to have a premature heart attack.

You hang up before the call to your mom can go through and stand there, watching the two boys sleep. Graham has both his arms wrapped around Mark’s forearm. It’s such a sweet picture that you take out your phone and snap one.

The flash is on.

Mark scrunches his nose and winces. “What the–”

“Sorry!” You whisper. “You both looked so cute, I couldn’t help it.”

Mark smiles, still sleepy, and finally opens his eyes. He peers at you, copper brown under fluttering lashes and you’re almost intimidated into looking away. “He had a nightmare.”

“Oh?”

“About me leaving.”

“Oh.” You frown. “I’m really sorry about that. I keep telling him that you’re moving out soon, but I don’t think he fully understands.”

Graham stirs. You reach down and pick him up. Your knuckles brush across Mark’s warm, sweater-clad chest and you suddenly wish you could cuddle with him, too. You shake the thoughts away and focus on your drowsy son. “You’re staying at Grandma's for a few days, remember?”

Graham rubs his eyes and perks up. “And I’ll see her cat?”

“Yes,” you confirm. “But we’ve got to get you dressed because she’s coming in a few minutes.”

“Mark Lee!” Your mom’s voice embarrassingly rings through the apartment, and you realize Mark has taken it upon himself to open the door. “Y/n told me she had a temporary roommate but I never thought she would finally ask you!”

“Oh my gosh…” you mumble, buckling Graham’s overalls and hauling him up into your arms. “Mom! His apartment flooded so he’s staying here. Don’t be weird about it.”

“But he’s so handsome,” your mom coos. You’re concerned she might reach forward and pinch Mark’s already ruddy cheeks.

“Thanks,” Mark laughs. “But she’s right, I’m just squatting until I can find a new place.”

Your mom harrumphs. “Well, I don’t see why you can’t stay here forever. Y/n doesn’t even use that office room. And even if she did, the two of you could just share a room.”

“Mom!” You plunk Graham into her hands and grab his overnight bag. “You have to leave.”

“Did I say something wrong?” She sounds worried, but there’s an undisclosed mirth in her eyes that makes you think of your freshman year, when you did have a crush on Mark.

“You said everything wrong,” you say, kindly pushing her out. “Have a good time, Graham. I love you! As always, Mom, call if you need me to come get him.”

“Yeah, right!” She yells over her shoulder. Graham is already giggling, so you close the door with confidence.

You turn back to your roommate. “I’m sorry about that, Mark.”

“It’s fine.” He smiles, but it’s reserved. “But speaking of me finding a place… I know Haechan told you that I can’t go back to my own apartment. I’m sorry I didn’t tell you sooner.”

“It’s okay,” you say. You want to say “You can stay here as long as you want, and long as you’ll let me keep you,” but that would reveal too much, and you don’t want to lose the one good friend you have.

“And I was thinking I should move out soon anyway.” Mark pulls his sweater sleeves until they cover his hands. He’s hiding. He’s shielding himself the same way he did in junior year, when he got turned down by his crush to go to the prom. “I don’t think it’s good for Graham to get this attached to me if I’m just going to leave.”

“Oh,” Your sleeves are too short, but you want to shield yourself too. “Yeah, that’s… that’s probably a good idea.”

Mark stands there for a beat, like he’s waiting for you to say something more. Like he hasn’t just taken your heart and pushed it aside. Like this hurts a lot less than it actually does.

But any word out of your mouth would be tearful. It would be honest. It would ruin everything. “I’m going to go on a run.”

There’s a cricket outside that won’t stop chirping against your window. You blame it for your insomnia, choosing to ignore the anxiety of eventually losing Mark. It feels so horribly childish, since you’ll see him when you drop Graham off at school. And you’ll see him whenever the two of you go out for coffee on weekends.

But you won’t see him in the kitchen, reaching for the pancake mix so his shirt rises up and you can see the dimples in his back. You won’t see him humming along to the radio while he works on his lesson plans. You won’t feel his warmth when the two of you stay awake, nursing spiked lemonade and giggling at the commentary videos you find on YouTube.

He’ll just be Mark again. He won’t be home anymore.

Startled by the realization, you get out of your covers and rush to your door.

It opens before you can even reach for the doorknob, and there’s Mark in his pajamas, biting his lip and avoiding your eyes.

“I don’t want you to leave,” you say.

Mark confesses, “I love you.”

You open your arms and he dives in, face pressed into the space where your neck meets your shoulder. Warmth envelopes you and the scent of pine fills your nose.

Mark is timeless. Youthful glory and childish pride. He’s a pinch on the side and a push on the swings. Like a rock that actually skips on the first try. Like shoes that you can slip on when they’re still tied. And he’s here, in your arms, squeezing you like you’re something valuable enough to lose. He’s confessing love like you aren’t the worst possible candidate for his heart.

“I can’t offer you much,” you start, but Mark bumps his forehead against yours, boyish and playful — football fields and bright red lockers and secret notes on bathroom walls.

“I’ve known you for years, Y/n,” Mark’s voice is a low rumble. Copper eyes blinking at you like you’re something to second glance at. “I know what I’m getting into. I want you. I want Graham. I want everything this is, and everything we’ve been for the past month. I don’t want this to end.”

You close your eyes, because his are too honest. He’s open and vulnerable and gentle — a child on the first day of school, ready to make friends. You take a deep breath, try to remember what you were like on your first day. Rosy cheeks and shy glances. Knobby knees and a trusting heart. You reach out for whoever you once were — the Y/n with a heart open and willing to be loved. “I don’t want this to end either. I’m in love with you, Mark.”

His grin lights up your world in its entirety. Gold flecks in onyx black disappear as he smiles, too thrilled to keep his eyes open. And when he kisses you, warm lips against cold ones, you feel like a puzzle has just slotted into place.

It would only make sense that you would grow to love the boy you grew up with.

It’s Not Fair

Hi hello, so I wrote most of this little story quite awhile ago and never finished it but today reading over it I just felt the need to give it an ending (it’s not the best ending but it’s an ending) anyway, I hope y’all enjoy a little short story about Leo experiencing anxiety 🥰 as always these characters belong to the lovely @lumosinlove

It’s not fair.

The thought wound its way into Leo's mind, twisting and sliding into every nook and cranny of his brain as easily as a serpent sliding through marshy river reeds.

It’s not fair.

Leo sighed and rolled his shoulders out hoping to relieve the coil of tension that had tightened in his muscles. The day had started so good too. He had woken that morning to the feeling of Logan pressing soft butterfly kisses to his cheeks, his forehead, his neck, Leo’s face pulled into a sleepy smile as he blinked his eyes open taking in the sight of Logan’s bright eyes and atrocious bed head.

“Good morning baby,” he mumbled, voice scratchy from sleep. Logan grinned back and leaned in, catching Leo’s mouth in a slow chaste kiss.

“Bonjour mon amour,” Logan whispered back against his lips. Leo didn’t want to move even an inch, because right there in their bed with Finn snuggled into his chest snoring softly and Logan’s lips warm and plush against his own, that was his favorite place in the world.

Everything had been going smoothly, practice had been hard but good, his day perfectly ordinary in every way. So why?

Why on earth did he feel this way? Why had his heart began beating fast as hummingbird wings? Why were earthworms burrowing and churning through soil in his stomach? Why did invisible ants scurry across his skin raising goosebumps in their wake?

It’s not fair.

It’s not fair that out of the blue Leo’s entire mood could flip, that his happiness could sour and curdle with unfounded anxiety. It wasn’t fair that the good could turn so very bad without so much as a warning.

Oh, boo hoo, who ever said life was fair? Leo shook his head, trying not to listen to the stupid mean thoughts in his head. Get over yourself, your little discomforts don’t matter. Suck it up.

Leo breathed in deep, trying in vain to settle the uncomfortable squirming inside him. After he had gotten home from practice Leo retreated out onto their little balcony, the cool evening air felt nice against his skin. The coarse wicker of his chair bit at his legs, through the thick denim of his jeans; the sharp pricks simultaneously felt very far away but also somewhat comforting, grounding him in the world around him. Leo’s eyes were locked onto the Gryffindor skyline but they had long since glazed over blurring the buildings into one gray streak across his vision, smudged pink clouds just above it.

Distantly he heard the glass door slide open and Finn’s soft voice, “Hey Nutter Butter, Lo was wanting take out tonight. Any strong opinions on Thai?”

Leo opened his mouth to answer, his eyes still staring blankly into the distance, but he couldn’t seem to get enough breath into his lungs to form the words. Each inhale making his chest tighter and tighter until Leo wished he could take a knife and cut himself open just to relieve the pressure.

“Leo?” Finn asked, concerned as he stepped out onto the balcony, coming a bit closer. Finn must have recognized the glassy vacant look on his face because he let out a sympathetic sigh, “Oh, sweetheart.”

Settling down onto his knees so they were at the same eye level, Finn pressed his palms against Leo’s thighs smoothing them up and down the tense muscle soothingly. They had been through this enough times for Finn to know that when he was lost and hurting, Leo craved nothing more than the contact. The warmth of his partner's hands on him more comforting than anything else.

“Come here baby,” Finn whispered, his hand rising to cup the back of Leo’s neck and gently pull him into his shoulder. Leo could feel his fingers thread into his hair as Finn pressed a kiss to his temple, “It’s ok my love, everything’s gonna be ok,” he murmured.

“Guys? You decide what you want for dinner? Cause I am not above ordering without-“Logan said walking out onto the balcony only to cut off his sentence when he saw the tender way Finn was holding Leo.

“What happened?” Logan asked, concern bleeding into his voice as he came to sit on the arm of that wicker chair, his hand settling warm and heavy on Leo’s back.

“I don’t- I-“ Leo tried, somehow his mouth unable to even form the simple phrase I don’t know.

It’s not fair.

It’s not fair that at random everything could be stripped away leaving Leo raw as an exposed nerve.

“Oh, mon amour,” Logan sighed, sad and sympathetic, “shhh, it’s ok you don’t have to answer.”

Leo’s breathing was as shaky as his trembling body, he let himself lean into their touch until his back was pressed to Logan’s thigh, face still buried in Finn's shoulder. The position was awkward, but Leo honestly couldn’t have cared less all he could think about was the warmth of their hands soaking into him. All he could think was how he desperately wished their touch could burn away the feeling inside him.

But sadly no matter how much he wished their love alone was enough, that wasn’t how life worked. But despite the fact that Finn and Logan couldn’t fix him Leo was still so incredibly grateful for their support, their love.

And in the moments when it felt like he was locked in a grave buried alive under cool dry earth. With tangled tree roots trying to twist and burrow through his body, absorb the nutrients of his life, they were the ones that made Leo want to dig himself out. They were the ones that made him want to claw his way back to the surface rather than surrender himself to the worms.

Leo didn’t know how long they sat with him, just letting him draw strength from their stability while the cool evening air washed over them. He didn’t know if his shaking was from the cold or the anxiety but then again he didn’t really care.

Eventually, Finn and Logan guided him back inside their home; they wrapped him in warm blankets and held him close until the trembling subsided.

“How you doing, Love?” Finn finally asked once Leo’s body seemed to have relaxed a bit. They were laid together on the couch Leo wrapped up tight and curled into Finn's chest. He soothingly ran his hands up and down Leo’s body and pressed a kiss to the little fluff of hair that was visible from inside his blanket cocoon.

“M’ok,” Leo whispered, his voice a bit rough from the raging forest fire of emotions that had burned hit inside him.

“Yeah?” he asked softly, worry clear in his voice, Leo just nodded.

“You hungry? You haven’t eaten since this morning, it might help to get something in your system.” Leo shrugged and snuggled in closer, tucking his face into Finn's shoulder.

“You just wanna stay here laying on me?” Leo nodded once more making Finn huff a soft laugh and kiss his head again.

“Alright baby, how about this: Lolo will get food, you can stay here and when he gets back if you don’t want to eat you’ll have some food for tomorrow. That sound ok?”

Leo tightened his hold around Finn and mumbled a quiet, “love you.”

And though the words were muffled by the blankets wrapped around him Finn heard, “I love you too Le, I always will.”

"This smol lovely thing-- how did he became the saltiest lord again?" She mumbled under her breath, visibly trembling to hold back herself from squealing.

"Uhm.. I'm hungry.. J-just a little bit."

Heavens. Masamune is cute and all when he is in a child mode but that mischievous side of him is still THERE!

Every time she bend down, he will get every single chance to do that! She could only sigh on how ironic adult Masa and child Masa is:-

Phew. She's glad that child Mitsuhide is very obedient. He seems like a good boy so far. Helping her with errands, smiling sincerely when she served him food and such, practically the OPPOSITE of adult Mitsuhide.

Well.. She is wrong. SO, SO WRONG.

Hideyoshi had came to MC's place, looking furious.

"This kid..... Is just.like.his.adult.mode!"

"Huh? What did he do OAO?"

MC turned to Mitsuhide and it was met with a very innocent smile,...

Until he opens his mouth. "Well.. His letter for his so-called fan girl breaks people's heart so.. I helped him by writing a new one. See? They are all dressed in a wedding kimono outside, isn't that lovely ( ͡^ ͜ʖ ͡^)?"

"It took me 5 hours, MC. FIVE! To draw them away and explaining things at them!!"

MC went (°д°) when Hideyoshi walks away, crying, and shakes her head at Mitsuhide. "I see. He is such a small snake even when he is in child mode, huh?"

Welp. MC literally jumped when he suddenly give out a creepy, low chuckle to her words after that.

Kenshin

The plate of snacks nearly fall from her grip the moment she entered the room.

Imagine child Kenshin, surrounded by a cloud of bunnies all over him, and he is there, in the middle of it, with ONLY his head that sticks out with this face (눈‸눈).

"Uh.. K-Kenshin? I brought some light snack, let's have it together...?"

"(눈‸눈)...."

"(´・ｪ・｀).... *sweats*"

"It's delicious, you know? See? This bun is shaped like a bunny."

"(눈‸눈) ...Hm."

"Uh.. S-so can you tell the bunnies to go outside? Or maybe y-you know, let you move so you can eat the snack?" She clasped her hands together, beaming a (forceful) smile, "It's a veeeerry limited edition...! It's like onigiri, you see? It has plums in the middle of it..!"

"(눈‸눈)... *gasp* (°д°)! Plums?"

"Yeah, plum- WAAAAHH \(OAO)/!!!! 🐇🐇🐇🐇🐇🐇🐇🐇🐇🐇!!!"

Poor MC get swarmed all over by the bunnies. But it's a miracle the bun survived though.

Shingen

"Oh my angel, my goddess, my angel, my sweetest being of my life 😏😏😏😏✨✨✨."

"...You said the word 'angel' twice, Shingen."

He gasped, "Ooh? I have come across a very genius goddess as well 💖💖💖💖💖!"

"Oh..."

MC about to escape from him, but only to be stopped with him, biting a cherry blossom branch in his mouth as he take it out when he successfully gets her attention,

"No, no, don't go and leave me like that. It hurts me, goddess..!"💖💖💖💖💖

MC's eye twitched to the saliva around the branch (ewww) before turning to him, "God, seriously, his child mode is the worst than his adult mode."

"What are you saying, my rainbow sunflower dango mochi? I am serious..! I don't see you as a big sis who take care of me..!"

"Oh really now? Show me how serious you are, then."

He nodded, genuinely showing a very firm look before going away for a while. "You wait here..!"

MC: ( ͡°з ͡°) Now what is he planning- uh--

*Shingen comes back with Yukimura, by riding on his shoulder like a very proud lord + wink* 😘😘😘😘😘✨✨✨✨✨

MC: OH FOR THE LOVE OF-- ಠAಠ

Also Shingen: *Kabedon MC in that state, with a SUPER EMBARRASSED Yukimura below him* So..? Do you believe me now, my kuchipu mimimu? 😘😘😘😘😘😘💖💖💖💖💖

MC:

MC: *S N A P*

*Cues sound of Shingen's forehead got flicked and both of him and Yukimura stumbled backwards and SPLASH!! They fell into the nearby pond*

Yet another rumbling and incoherent post.

As usual, 2HA Spoiler Warning. On re-reading Chapter 181 but this time in my native language (This is far too long, I'll place it under cut) . . . . Of earthworms, Chu Wanning, Mo Ran, the beginning of their master-disciple relationship. So, the official 2HA vol.5 has recently come out in my mother tongue, and it covers from Chapter 156 to 189.

I personally find the saving earthworms scene is pivotal to Chu Wanning finally accepting young Mo Ran as his third and final disciple. The scene is sweet, heartwarming, accentuating how kind-hearted and good both our protagonists are. But, there is a minor difference in how the scene plays out in the official release in my language.

Needless to say, I was surprised and went on to blindly comb my way through RAW on JJWXC. "方便他救蚯蚓", this is Chu Wanning's answer to Xue Zhengyong. 方便 (fāngbiàn) here is the key. I consult with several dictionaries; the definition, as I understand, is roughly something along the line of "convenient/handy" (adj.) and "facilitate/to make things easy" (v.) The MTL, sadly, seems to leave this particular word out entirely. (Alas, such are the limitations of these tools. Still, I am forever grateful for the efforts and the hard works all fan-translators and MTL-editors have done to bridge the gap between the RAW and non-Chinese speaking audience. Truly, thank you.) Additionally, the finding also corresponds with the official version in my language. So... when asked by Xue Zhengyong, Chu Wanning doesn't just say, "He rescues earthworms." Instead, he says, "So that he can conveniently rescue earthworms." And, to me, this slight alteration changes everything. How can I put this into words? Suddenly, it's no longer the case of a Master (Shizun) who is impressed by a would-be disciple and decides to accept him because the youth managed to pass the test/his standard. This interpretation, I feel, implies that Chu Wanning somehow "stoops down" to accept Mo Ran. It places him on a higher level and status. It's "Ah, he shows himself as worthy. I'm impressed. Very well, I'll accept him." However, with this, it now shifts. While, yes, Chu Wanning is impressed by Mo Ran and his act of kindness. This isn't about Mo Ran passing the metaphorical test. There is no test. Chu Wanning sees something in Mo Ran, goodness in him and its potential. It ignites in him a desire to promote/support, to give whatever in his power/at his disposal to nurture/equip Mo Ran with the necessary tools/skills so that he can grow and continue to do good deeds. It's "Oh, his heart is pure, and if I can be of any help at all, then, I gladly teach him everything I know." It reads as if Chu Wanning himself feels honoured to be Mo Ran's Shizun. I think it fits with how *sighs* lowly Chu Wanning views himself.

Sure, he may be prideful of his skills and inventions, however, that never extends to his sense of self. He judges himself and his worth on what he does or can do. Anything outside of that realm, he practically views himself as expendable, possibly worthless, even. (Thanks to... yeah, we all know why.) His default state is always "to help/to give" in any way that he can with what little (in his opinion) that he possesses. This brings me to another point on my endless list of why I love Chu Wanning. While one can argue that the man is unfit as a teacher as he harbours inappropriate thoughts/feelings towards his disciple (Mind you, he has never and would never plan to act on it). Or that he is not the best teacher since he is always hard on them and never once compliments them or give them positive reinforcement. Still, in my eyes, his heart and intention remain true. He genuinely cares about his disciples and their education. He's proud of them (albeit silently) and always want them to grow and excel at what they do. ;_____;

Chapter 6:Arrest

The next day heading into class and feeling everyone's eyes on you wasn't exactly how you wanted to spend your morning in class. At least it wasn’t boring, it isn’t every day you are arrested for murder, found innocent, and then let go the next day. Some of the rumors are funny like how your dad paid them to let you go, no your dad was a humble man who enjoyed relaxing on the weekends with a cup of tea, and feeding the birds in the backyard.

“(name), what do you got there, oh dear!” you remember your dad's face as you were peering over a bird who was dead on the ground

“Dad why isn't it moving?” you asked, poking its stomach, him cringing and pulling your hand back.

“Well, sometimes when things get hurt, they stop moving.” He said

“For how long?” you asked

“Forever, sadly.” He said, “They don't feel or hear anything either.”

“How can we be so sure?” you asked, your father didn't really know how to respond to that, not sure if a four-year-old could understand nerves and the brain function and the pain receptors.

“That's a story for when you are early, come on let's go clean your hands.” He said, as you looked back at the bird, once your dad got your hands cleaned up he told you to avoid touching “dead” animals, what made dead animals dirtier than livings ones, you headed back to the bird and put out one of your talons and poked it, how weird.

You were smiling to yourself having that memory, your dad was a bit concerned when he came back to see the dead bird was punctured and put you in time out and had to explain the many diseases dead animals could carry. Maybe that is why he got you so many books on animals after that to satisfy your curiosity, still, if it was already dead and couldn't feel pain what was the issue, maybe he was worried you would try to do it on something living, but luckily the therapist marked it off as quirk use curiosity, and kid curiosity.

So when you remember that one time you cut a kid's cheek for cutting earthworms that were still alive

“What Are You doing?” you asked a group of kids who were leaning over a worm on the ground, it was wiggling around the pavement and must have been hot. “you know being on hot pavement hurts the slime coat on them right?”

“Why don't you worry about it, look if we cut in half we can get two worms.” He said

“Stop that will hurt it,” you said, trying to

“Back off, it's just a puny worm.” He said as he cut the worm down the middle with a plastic knife he snuck from lunch, you almost vomited, then you got angry, so you flexed your wingers and swiped your smaller talons across his face.

“AGHHH TEACHER!!” he yelled

“Oh stop you puny worm.” you said as the teachers ran over

and when your dad found out he just gave you a pat on the back.

or that one time you swiped at that kid's leg for using a magnifying glass on a trail of ants.

“” What are you doing?” you asked looking at a kid who was crouched down near a lien of ants

“Looking at the ants.” He said

“OH neat, did you know that ants belong to the same family as bees and wasps?” you said

“What a dummy, they don’t have wings.” He said as he adjusted the magnifying glass and started frying them one by one, you pulled his hand back

“Hey stop that, you are killing them,” you said

“So they are just ants, not like they feel anything.” He said

“You are still killing them,” you said, and he just shoved you down

“You are boring.” he said as you furrowed your brows before swiping his leg, and he cried out for the teacher again as the ants were climbing up his shoes

The teacher called your dad in again, and he was trying not to laugh in the teacher's face, still, he took you out of school that day.

“Still, (name) why did you swipe at the kid's leg.” your dad said

“He was killing the ants.” you said “He was hurting something so I stopped him.”

“Well you have a good heart, but sometimes you put it to use in the wrong ways.” he said “Come on let's go get you some ice cream it's hot out today.”

“Okay,” you said

Your dad may not have understood your tendency to use your quirk, but he tried his best to help you curve your curiosity and moral compass of the world. Maybe that's why he was so concerned that you wanted to be a surgeon, that you were just giving in to your urge to use your quirk again, but he must have come around thinking if it could be used for good why stop you.

“Why is she smiling, she never smiles.”

“It's kind of creepy.”

The girl's conversation snapped you out of your thoughts and you looked over in their direction, when they noticed you they shut their mouths and looked down like they aren't just bad-mouthing you earlier. So you were more than happy to finally get back to your dorm away from people. Maybe you would call your dad again, yeah that would be a good idea.

“Hello (name) how are you doing, are you eating enough up there?” was the first thing he asked

“I'm doing fine, don't worry about eating my fruit.” You said, “It's getting really boring.”

“But I thought you loved learning about human anatomy?” he asked

“I do but we haven't been learning everything new, I already know all this stuff.” you explained, “And well I'm not really calling because of school, something happened.” “Really what?” he asked

“I got arrested by the police the other day,” you said

“YOU GOT WHAT!” he yelled

“Dad I can explain, look I saw a guy taking a drunk girl home to take advantage of, and well I followed him and went in and stopped it, he was found killed in his dorm the next day.”

“I see, that's...well I see,” he said

“Dad you don't think i”

“Of course not.” he said “I’m just worried you are always getting yourself in trouble defending people, makes me wonder why you didn't go towards hero work.”

“Haha I’m going to help people in my own way,” you said

“Well, I'm just glad you weren't there when the murders came.” Your dad said and you started to feel guilty. “Well, I need to get going, take care of yourself, love you.”

“Love you too,” you said, and he hung up

“See I told you my daughter wouldn't do anything.” Your dad was talking to the hero public safety commission

“Sir, please understand we think your daughter might be working with the Nighthawk.”

“My daughter wouldn't hang around horrible people,” he said leaning back in his chair

“Sir a lot can change when kids leave college.”

“Well, you don't know my daughter then, besides it sounded like the man had it coming, he decided it would be okay to lay his hands on my daughter after all, do you have kids what would you think if that happened to them, and if the nighthawk did save her, i would give him a firm handshake and a big thank you.” your dad said, taking a long sip of tea “Would you like a cup?”

“N thank you.”

“Well that is your loss, now I answered your questions, can you leave my house now, and stop insulting my daughter.” your dad said, glaring the two guys down indicating it was time for them to go.

You decided to go for another late night walk, it appeared that Hawks decided to book it, he was probably under the impression that you snitched on him, you hadn’t seen one feather from him, you were starting to get man, is this what ghosting someone was?

You kept walking down the campus before seeing a piece of paper on the ground who decided to litter here, you picked it up only to notice a scribble of red ink that looked like a feather, you rolled your eyes and put it in your pocket, if hawks were sending notes then it must've been something he couldn't tell in person. So you headed back to your dorm and closed the blinds and opened the note.

“Hey, chickadee. thanks for not snitching on me earlier really appreciate that, and they are watching you, they went to your dads this morning and were questioning him, so look if you want me to leave you alone I can understand that, just give me one light means leave, two means stay”

You put two lights on that night, you hoped hawks got the message.

Hawks was standing on top of the next building over, he gave a sigh of relief to see those two lights in your window, he knew you would find the note, he knew you were smart, still, The HPSC was now interviewing your family, well your dad. He seemed like a nice fellow, guess the HPSC couldn't see that, not like they saw anything outside their narrow view of what “Justice '' was, aka if they controlled it was good, at anything else was bad. So them hunting down a child to try and force him to become a pawn in their game all made sense in their head, not like they would ever be able to catch him.

Still seeing the many cars surrounding the palace, and all the news campus security that we're looking at you the whole day secretly following you around everywhere made him crush his can of coffee in his hands, maybe at himself for talking to you and getting you into the mess that was the HPSC. But it was more at the HPSC in the first place, maybe it was time to knock them down a peg or two.

“So what are you planning to do after this?” One of the spies said

“I’m not sure?” He said

“How about you go to a hot spring? It's good for the stiff muscles.” Hawks suggested before the two of them looked at him and he quickly knocked them out using both his wings to smash their heads together, now to slash the cars. There were a lot of spies roaming this place, he had a long night ahead of him.

Many employees of the Hero public safety commission have been found knocked out on the campus this morning, the administer is talking to one of the higher-ups this morning, reports show and support that a dangerous villain by the Name of Nighthawk is roaming the campus we are advising all student to have a curfew before 7 and to walk in groups.

“Can you tell us why you had these people on our campus without us knowing?” The reporter asked over the telecom.

“We believe the Nighthawk is roaming the campus, he already killed one of your students, we were taking protective measures.” The president said

“Then why were they all knocked out, why did you only send in low-level employees.”

“We were trying to gather information.”

“This is boring.” you thought and switched to a different video, they had really sent that many people to watch over you what was to happen next, not like you had much time to think about it before your door crashed down and you had about six funs pointed at you.

“(full name) you are under arrest for helping and harboring a high stakes villain,” they said as you had your hands up and one walked over picking the note up, crap why didn't you destroy that earlier, so your hands were put behind your back and you were taken away, two times in one week, what a life.

Progress in Food Production Illustration

In 1968, when I was and impressionable six years old horrified by what the television was showing about the Vietnam War, listening to the Beatles sing 'All you need is love', my parents bought a book called "The Population Bomb" by scientist Paul Ehrlich. It suggested that we were running out of resources because our population was growing too fast and we were consuming our earth's life support system faster than it could

regenerate. Two years later, on the first Earth Day, I began my activism, rounding up the neighborhood kids and staging a clean up of the polluted stream behind our apartment that ran into the Hudson River.

A year later my Beatle idol George Harrison held a "Concert for Bangladesh" to raise awareness of the suffering there. Like many kids worried about the "starving kids in Bangladesh" I asked in school why things were getting so bad. Like most school children around the world, we were told how the population bomb supposedly worked, how it ticked. The idea went back to the Reverend Thomas Malthus who argued in 1798 that "population increases geometrically, while food supplies increase only

Looks neat, right -- so mathematically precise and inevitable. The problem is that it is wrong. I felt it as a kid. It bothered me throughout middle school and high school and on in to college. The reverend's now famous "Malthusian" predictions of doom and gloom came from a man who never studied biology... we now realize that he was a religious zealot and bigot who made up theories to try and stoke anti- immigration fever, arguing that undesirable poor people were basically breeding like rats. The problem in his logic is easy to spot when you use Nexus thinking: FOOD IS A POPULATION. Food comes from living creatures who have populations. They expand GEOMETRICALLY. If you let them. If you encourage them. It doesn't matter if we are talking about Brewer's yeast or earthworms or oak trees or apple trees or chickens or ears of corn or cattle or cocoa covered ants... whatever you eat comes from living organisms that are programmed to reproduce as fast as they can... that WANT to reproduce... geometrically. Just like us. So... population increases geometrically, whether it is us or our food. Starving kids in Bangladesh or Ethiopia simply shouldn't happen, and, I will insist to you, WOULDN'T, if we allowed the organism we eat to do their thing.

The key to keeping food production in line with food consumption, I have been arguing, is to use the "food-waste-to-fuel-and-fertilizer-and-food" or FW2F3 formula wherein every molecule of nitrogen, phosphorous, pottasium and carbon and micronutrients found in our wastes in our burgeoning cities is transformed immediately, in situ, back into food through the magical transduction of anaerobic and aerobic biodigestion and urban vertical farming and micro-livestock.

Using these simple techologies to close the loops in the food/energy/water nexus, the curves on those graphs should continue to go up in lock step, until we reach the limits set by sunlight. And then we will have to figure out safe, harmless ways to grow not just ourselves and our "economy" but our ecology, and eventually help grow new planets. But even that... the promise of space stations and terraforming planets, isn't out of the question. After all, the one thing that doesn't seem to ever be in any danger of NOT expanding... is the universe."

Today’s lecture is about “Progress in food production: a new wave of ancient practices and post-modern technologies that use less water and less energy, produce less waste and can even produce more energy.”

And I believe, to paraphrase Deuteronomy 12:3, we have to start by “tearing down the altars and smashing the sacred pillars” that were erected by wrong headed Malthusians who used a gross misunderstanding of biology and a total lack of nexus and systems thinking to scare us into what I call “induced paralysis for profit”. The idea comes from what is called in economics classes “The Scarcity Model: the fundamental economic assumption of having seemingly unlimited human needs and wants in a world of limited resources, which states that society has insufficient productive resources to fulfill all human wants and needs”.

When the scarcity model is used to create fear, to create an atmosphere of doom and gloom, to predict the inevitable arrival of the four horsemen of the apocalypse (Conquest, War, Famine, and Death), political economists and political ecologists suggest that it is much easier for elite groups to manipulate the masses. They control the machinery of conquest and war, and they use the specter of famine to gain their power.

Food production sits at the heart of the nexus – every animal on this planet (and doubtless the vast majority of beings in our universe) finds food to be the fundamental. It is priority number one, for unless you are a being of pure light you need the food that grows with light to survive. And if you spread misinformation that famine is imminent, that starvation is just around the corner, you can mobilize armies.

However, looked at from a FEW Nexus perspective, this fear of famine we

have been living with since Biblical times (the four horsemen are part of the Book of Revelation of Jesus Christ to John of Patmos, at 6:1-8 in the New Testament written during the Roman occupation of Palestine) is a peculiar Middle Eastern and North European phenomenon it turns out, coming from civilizations in regions of the world where water stresses constrained food production. People in well-watered tropical regions rarely felt threatened by food scarcity and in fact were described by anthropologist Marshall Sahlins as living in a state of perpetual abundance. He postulated that hunter- gatherers were, in fact “the original affluent society” at a symposium entitled "Man the Hunter" in 1966 and this idea has been tested and found true for most peoples around the world where water was not a limiting factor. It explains why hunting and gathering and subsistence farming persist to this day, and why so many people resisted being brought into modern civilization or adopting modern agriculture methods. In fact the work of historian Anthropologist Eric Wolf, such as “Peasant Wars of the Twentieth Century” and Yale professor James Scott in books such as “Seeing Like a State: How Certain Schemes to Improve the Human Condition Have Failed” teach us that there have been enough failures due to the form of agriculture that emerged from the conquering civilizations that the conquered were willing to sacrifice their lives to revolt against them. Somehow, it seems, those certain schemes to improve yields were social and ecological disasters that should have been rejected by civilizations but instead were used to confirm the Reverend Malthus’ scientifically unfounded hypothesis – a classic but often neglected example of what is known as confirmation bias – which wiki defines as “the tendency to search for, interpret, favor, and recall information in a way that confirms one's preexisting beliefs or hypotheses, while giving disproportionately less consideration to alternative

possibilities”. When it comes to food production, the alternative possibility, which is persuasively argued in Richard Manning’s book “Against the Grain: How Agriculture Has Hijacked Civilization” is that monocropping annual vegetation and basing civilization on grain agriculture, on the use of plants in the family Poaceae/Graminae, that is the grasses – wheat, rice, corn, barely, oats and sugar – yes, sugar is a grass – is, to caricature the 45th president of the world’s most powerful agriculture and military empire, “ a disaster”.

History records that agriculture and famine are the Jekyll and Hyde of the long and often militarized march of civilization. The one came because of the other, says Manning. Most of us were taught the opposite weren’t we? Taught that human life, as the 17th century imperial philosopher Thomas Hobbes decried in his book Leviathan, was “nasty, brutish and short” We were told that humans lived in a state of semi-starvation UNTIL they discovered agriculture. We were told that agriculture saved our species from hunger and misery, gave us the surpluses that enabled our climb to civilization. Sounds good, turns out not to be true.

Even Harvard’s Spencer Wells, a friend of mine who is the geneticist who leads the National Geographic Genographic project writes in his book “Pandora's Seed: The Unforeseen Cost of Civilization” that when humans shifted from hunting and gathering in that original affluent society to grain agriculture the average height of men dropped from about 5 foot 7 to 5 foot 2 and women’s pelvic girdles narrowed to the point where death in childbirth increased in frequency.

After all, women were BURNED at the stake for understanding and promoting biodiversity in diet by the European patriarchy, and children punished or mocked for thinking they could go into the forest as kids do and come back munching on lizards and grubs. Agriculture can be blamed not only for this tremendous patriarchal violence and loss of biodiversity as we simplified the landscape to a handful of weedy grasses, but for what James Scott calls the “dummification” of humanity. At one time, as I experienced among the hunters and gatherers of Borneo, harvesting food was an educational adventure that made women and children experts who rivaled the best Ph.D. botanists and naturalists who Harvard sent out. With agriculture we turned brilliant self-sufficient peasants into outdoor factory workers and, of course, quite literally when you are talking about the first 400 years of agriculture in the European colonized Americas, slaves. The violence inherent in agriculture rears its ugly head everywhere.

And it could be said that Genesis itself records the clearest indication that grain agriculture is the scourge of mankind, the source of its original sin of violence in The story of Cain and Abel. This chapter of the Bible is the clearest indictment of wheat agriculture one could imagine, and nobody seems to comment on it. Abel is a pastoralist who tends a flock of animals who wander about like ungulate hunter gatherers, eating what God has given them. His brother Cain is... a wheat farmer, somehow stupidly living out God’s curse to scratch a living in the hot sun through toil amidst the thistles and thorns that always accompany weed agriculture. Abel brings a lamb meat sacrifice to the altar of God, along with diverse fruits and vegetables he has gathered, and God is pleased.

Cain then comes with a bunch of wheat and the Bible says, “but for Cain and for his offering He had no regard. So Cain became very angry and his countenance fell. Then the LORD said to Cain, "Why are you angry? And why has your countenance fallen?7"If you do well, will not your countenance be lifted up? And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door; and its desire is for you, but you must master it."...

To me this is a clear indication that the ancients saw wheat offerings as a kind of sin, the sin of an addiction, an addiction which Cain could not

master. In his anger he turns around and kills his gentle carnivorous animal slaughtering brother.

Think about it for a moment... it is enough to make Vegans go mad: The vegetarian is the killer, the slaughterer of baby goats is the gentle one.

Could it be that this ancient myths were there to warn us that wheat is a weed, that grains are drugs, that we haven’t been growing food all along, but addictive substances that will end up mastering us through the Botany of Desire?

So, to get back to Reverend Malthus, who in my opinion must not have spent an awful lot of time delving into the hermeneutic interpretation of the books he preached in his fiery diatribes against the poor and the immigrants, it is clear to me that the entire Matlhusian premise is based on a fabrication of the weed eaters, who most likely did observe that if they kept planting grains and consuming starches and sugars their own sickly but ever increasing population would outstrip the fecundity of the land and so human populations would increase geometrically while their drug-food agriculture would only increase arithmetically if at all.

But if Abel had been Abel, we might have returned to the garden a long long time ago, where food is a self-increasing population grown in permacultural symbiosis into perpetuity. The good news is, that the world as we know it IS coming to an end. And what is ending isn’t the good life, but the bad life we inherited from our dummified forebears. We can begin again. Short Story: A Blind Man Who is Obsessed with Buttons

“It’s quite the CV I’ve got now”, Dennis Douglas said into the phone: “Eighty-five years old, blind, recently widowed, and now I’m losing my marbles.”

“You’ve still got a strong mind, Dad. You’re doing much better than most your age.” His daughter Caroline spoke stoically, even though she’d noticed her Dad’s forgetfulness of late. “What’s the matter?”

“I’ve lost my book. I usually put it on the nightstand, and it’s not there now.”

“Have you tried the sofa? Sometimes you like to read there, too.”

The line went quiet while Dennis oriented himself. He was slow on his feet, but he knew every inch of his bungalow, better even than the architect’s blueprints. He reached down for the sofa, and brushed his hand across the seats. The book was right there.

“Bloody hell, you’re right. Well done, love.”

“There you go,” Caroline said with tenderness. She was reminded of using that phrase with her children. Her heart felt whole for a moment.

“...Are you still there, Caroline?”

“I’m still here, Dad. Sorry, I was having a moment. Anyway, I’m thinking of bringing the kids up on Saturday before we head into town.”

“Fantastic,” Dennis said. “I’ll look forward to it. I’ll let you go now, I’m sure you’re busy. Love you, darling.”

“Alright, see you then. Love you too.”

Dennis took his Braille edition of Poe’s ‘The Raven’ back to its rightful place on the nightstand. His other hand was in his trouser pocket, clasping Caroline’s button.

Caroline’s was made of glass. It was smooth and light and fit perfectly in the centre of Dennis’ wrinkled palm. It was quite large, about the size of a medallion, and was the first button to take up residence in his pocket. It had been twenty-two years since Caroline brought it back from The Czech Republic as a gift. Holding it for the first time, Dennis loved the feel and weight of it, and decided from then on that he would need a button for each of the most important people in his life.

Locating loved ones in his pocket was, for Dennis, a way of seeing them. He could have chosen some other token to remember people by, but the subtle varieties of buttons pleased him. Different materials and cuts and finishes made buttons so distinctive to Dennis that he saw uniques personalities in each one.

His father’s was made of varnished wood.

His mother’s, gold, with an intricate engraving.

His son’s, stitched leather.

His grandchildren: cloth, copper, silk, steel, pearl and porcelain, all with their own unique textures.

The missing link was a button for his wife. He had never needed a button for Irene because they had always been so close. Ever since he went blind from the car accident in his twenties, she had been there, every single day. Hers was the last face he remembered. Now Irene was gone, he needed the best button he could find.

It had been three months since she passed, and Dennis decided it was about time to sort through her closet. He wanted to keep the clothes for now; the smell and the touch of the fabric was so vivid that it brought Irene so close. He wasn’t sure if he would ever be able to let go.

He did however, give himself the permission to make a few tailoring adjustments in the pursuit of the perfect button.

Dennis was sure that Irene would forgive him, so he laid all her clothes on the bed, and meticulously took a pair of scissors to each and every thread that held a button. He removed them one by one. There were hundreds by the time he was done.

Dennis placed the buttons in a box on his coffee table, and sank into his rocking chair. The golden retriever, Lola, nestled herself between his feet. It was the first blissful rest since Irene had passed.

When Dennis resurfaced, he sifted through the buttons. He turned each one over in his fingers to gauge the quality and texture. Many were simple, plastic, common; insufficient to remember his wife by. Dennis began throwing out the buttons that were no good, with increasing frustration. Lola watched with great curiosity, turning her head as each button was put in the bin.

At the end of the harvest, there were a handful of nice pieces left in the box, but none that were good enough. Dennis had consigned everything else to the bin, and he felt cheap, as though he’d thrown away hundreds of tiny fragments of Irene in exchange for another selfish moment with her.

Dennis sat amid the pile of buttonless clothes, defeated. He lifted one of Irene’s blouses to his nose. It was her alright. But though her scent remained, Dennis struggled to see Irene’s face in his mind. He felt as if he was losing the thing he cherished the most: his memory. Dennis wept, and plunged into an abyss of grief he had not yet experienced since his wife’s passing.

He remembered only the car accident from some sixty years before, and the slow-motion collision with the tree. Its branches came through the windscreen, leaving Dennis with facial injuries so severe that he would never see again. He tried to picture Irene in the passenger seat, all bloodied and desperate, but he could not see past darkness.

Dennis didn’t eat for two days, and barely slept. The feeling of Lola’s presence kept him alive, and rich tea biscuits.

Saturday arrived, and Caroline brought her two kids: Bobby, age 8, and Laney, age 6.

When Dennis opened the door, he was struck by the brightness as the door opened. Pure light surrounding the presence of his family.

‘Dad, what’s going on? Why are the curtains drawn?’

Dennis said nothing, and retreated to the sofa, ashamed by his own grief.

Caroline saw her mother’s clothes scattered throughout the living room, and then the box of buttons on the table.

‘Oh, Dad -’ Caroline said. She brought her hand to her chest, betraying some fragility. ‘Bobby, Laney, will you wait in the car for a few minutes while I help Grandpa clean up?’

‘We can help,’ Bobby said. He looked at Laney for support. She nodded affirmatively.

‘It’s fine’, Dennis said, ‘They can help. Can’t you kids? You’re both big and strong now.’

Bobby flexed his muscles and grunted like he-man. Laney tittered.

‘That’s the spirit,’ Grandpa Dennis said. ‘Now why don’t you collect all of Grandma’s clothes and take them to the bedroom. Don’t knock over the box of buttons.’

The kids ran across the room and picked up the clothes. They tuned in to their own little world. It was play for them.

While the kids ran amok, Caroline held her father’s hand. She whispered in his ear: “Guess what? ‘Bobby has a gift for you.”

“Oh, does he?’ Grandpa Dennis said. ‘Another caged earthworm?”

“This one’s a good one, don’t worry.”

Dennis thumbed Bobby’s copper button in his pocket. It felt cool, soothing.

“Sit down, Dad. Take it easy. I’ll help the kids hang the clothes.” Caroline gave her father a kiss and disappeared into the bedroom. Dennis dropped onto the sofa. After a minute or so, he was snoring bearishly.

Once the cleaning was done, Bobby and Laney tiptoed up to the sleeping giant. Caroline put her hand on her father’s, and he came to.

In the presence of his grandchildren, and the smell of their clothes, Dennis was reminded of Irene. It was as if he’d woken up next to her.

Bobby carefully slipped a copper coin into his grandpa’s hand.

“What’s this? A coin! Thank you, Bobby. As you probably noticed, I was looking for a button.”

The coin felt at rest in Dennis’ hand. It had a steady weight to it, a perfect balance.

“But this coin’s special, isn’t it Bobby?” Caroline said.

“Yes, Grandma gave it to me.”

“She did? Well are you sure don’t want to save it? If you spend all your money you won’t have any left for sweets!”

“This one wouldn’t even get us a bar of chocolate,” Laney said.

“Well that’s no good, I better keep it then!” Dennis said.

Dennis put the coin in his pocket and played with it between his fingers. He was surprised by how satisfying it was to hold, and how well it seemed to complement the buttons.

“There is still one problem though,” Dennis said. “Now I have two copper objects in my pocket to remind me of Bobby.” That’s not fair on the other grandkids, is it Laney?”

“Nope,” Laney said.

“Well this coin is actually bronze,” Caroline said. “A halfpenny. And it’s to remind you of Grandma. She left it in her will for you. It’s the change from the first gift you ever bought her. Do you remember?”

Dennis’ memory flashed across time, to the dress shop, Gilbert’s. He was in his early twenties, and he could see everything. It was as if he was back there in the store. He remembered the lighting and the mannequins in the window. he remembered the face of the young woman working there. She helped him choose a dress.

He remembered how expensive the dress was, and how he couldn’t afford it, but bought it anyway. He remembered laughing when he only got back a halfpenny in change. And rather than leaving a tip, he slid the penny into one of the dress pockets before getting it wrapped. While the cashier was wrapping, Dennis wrote in the gift card:

Dear Irene, I’m sure this will look beautiful on you. Happy Birthday. P.S. keep the change.

And keep the change she did, for the rest of her life.

For twenty-two years, Dennis was obsessed with buttons, but what he really needed was that coin.

a cliche phrase that just got filled

right after i finished my last final exam of the semester, some girls in my class and i went sunrise hiking (because what else are you going to do in Blacksburg?). i went hiking during this time my freshman year, so i figured that going again would be kind of special. a different mountain, with different people, hiking up to a different, but grand view. plus, it was the perfect opportunity to reflect on this past semester (but that's saved for a future post, don't worry). i was really excited. i wanted this time with my sisters and to experience something as glorious as God's vast creations, together, is something i know i won’t be able to do often when i'm older. finishing the former half of college, i realized that the latter half would go by a lot faster. and i needed to make the most out of where i am at this moment.

i apologize in advance, because this post is going to go off the cliche saying of "life's a climb, but the view is great." and honestly, this phrase used to get me angry because it was just so optimistic and i guess i didn't like that, haha. but this hike made me realize that these aren't just empty words that are used to cheer someone up. life really is a climb, life is hard. life is so hard and full of so much ... so much of what it has to offer ... but there really is something at the top. let me explain to you, (whoever you may be).

again, i apologize, but this time for my messy thoughts. i have a hard time fumbling through them and putting them into something coherent. but friends, i realized so much throughout this hike.

haha truly, i have the endurance level of an earthworm. i think all the athletic genes went to my brothers (darn!). but i knew i was going in with a group of girls, so hopefully i wouldn't be slowing anyone down. and this hike was supposed to be easier than the one i accomplished last year - and i survived that. so i went in with high hopes of not getting too exhausted. actually, i went in thinking this would be an easy hike and that i would just breeze through. oh, Sarah.

throughout the majority of the trail, i walked alongside one sister specifically, and we got to catch up on everything that's happened since we last had a formal conversation (which was probably this same time last year.) life got so busy and we never got to see each other with our conflicting schedules. but lowkey, i loved it, because there was so much we could throw at each other. we shared what we were struggling with at the moment, what we were afraid of in the following year, and altogether realized how God was working throughout it all. and usually i hate talking when doing something that requires physical endurance, because i already run out of breath doing just that. but surprisingly, from talking with her, i gained energy and the hike felt so much quicker and easier as we were talking and walking. in fact, we were leading the group the majority of the time and it was ironic because we're probably the least physically fit, haha. everything felt good. i was digging the whole atmosphere of walking in the dark beside someone while only using an iPhone flashlight as the only source of light. everything was calm around us and i felt so relieved. accomplishing yet another year of college and just being able to breathe was so relieving. so, why am i telling you this? because, i realized that life is a climb, but - if you have sisters beside you walking with you throughout it, then it becomes so much easier. without a doubt, i would not have survived this hike by myself. being put in a situation where it was okay to be vulnerable felt good. being able to pour out everything i had on my mind kept me going. and the best part is, is the feedback you receive from sharing a piece of your heart. i learned a lot from this one talk. out of context, i learned that genuinely listening is actually really hard to do, much harder than talking. i learned that it's for the best that we're not all the same, and that we're stitched together uniquely. i learned that you can't go through this alone. it's so important to find a community and support system. sisterhood is so important and so filling. when i hike, i usually keep my mouth shut (ugh, i know some of you might find that hard to believe.) but there's so many thoughts spiraling through my mind the entire time. and they're just bouncing off the walls of my brain, with no outlet. thoughts that are about how i'm struggling on this hike. "oh gosh, i need a water break, but no one else seems to look thirsty." "my feet hurt and my hip feels like its sliding out of place." "my limbs feel like they're no longer my limbs." "why am i so physically unfit?" i don't bother to express these thoughts out loud because i place this assumption that no one is thinking the same thing. everyone else is probably breezing through this and i'm the only one struggling. who wants to hear these thoughts? i'd be burdening the rest of the group. i mean, i'm the most incapable one here, right? surprise, Sarah! life's a climb - and everyone else is struggling alongside with you, whether you realize it or not. i realized that every time (which was kind of often) someone said the exact thoughts i was having out loud, i felt so much reassurance and the pressure to keep up was lifted off. it felt so good to hear someone saying they were struggling. i'm not the only one. and so that's when i realized, life is a climb, but - if you are vulnerable enough to share what you're struggling with, there's a very good chance someone is going through something similar and might be able to share the burden with you. and together, you keep walking.

okay, i just explained the part where life is a climb. but, what about the view? my gosh, when i finally reached the top... what i saw was absolutely beautiful. it really didn’t feel like i just hiked for two hours. this is where i say "this was worth it." the pink, yellow, and blue. the tiny city lights that looked like leftover sparkles from the night. the patches of land that weren't covered with trees. the sparse houses that allowed a person to sleep in peace for yet another night. the people that passed us on the trail who were already waiting at the top. i took it all in. i really did. and i thought to myself, (and read this next part really slowly)

friends. our God isn't some begrudging judge, waiting for us to shape up on our own. He comes to rescue us, helping us turn back to Him. He is the loving Father, running unashamedly toward His prodigal son. He is the good Shepard who goes off in search of just one sheep. sometimes the climb is tedious and disheartening, and downright painful. and in those moments, it's so temping to give up and turn away. but what we might not be able to see is the most magnificent view up ahead. here's what's at the top of life's climb: our gracious Father, extending his arms and calling us home. and that’s where it’s really worth it.
