When I wrote this I was barely done with the girl a section and now I'm writing THIS when I'm barely done with girl b, and I just want to say that I am REALLY enjoying this novel. I was a little confused about the characters and I don't like judging the books I've read when I'm barely into them and/or there's still lots of stuff that I don't understand so I went back and reread the entire girl a section (bc I was a bit unclear on things thanks to the audiobook) and I'm proud to say that now I completely get whats going on and whos who. Lastly, I really fucking love this book. It was so bizarre to hear the narrator describe tumblr and the sims 4 to me, like I don't like how similar I am to Violet. But thankfully even though I'm interested in true crime I don't consider myself to be a true crime buff or armchair detective, and I definitely don't have a "favorite serial killer" jfc Violet. But when I first started this novel it was looking like 4 stars and now that I'm nearly 2/3rd of the way through it still is!! I'm so happy because like I've said before, most popular thrillers are trash but this has a level of detail to not only the characters and the relationships but the side characters and the history of the town that you NEVER see in thrillers. I'm kind of obsessed with this book and will probably finish it today, and I want to read boy parts after this because I am also mildly obsessed with Eliza Clark

Finally got ahold of the audiobook of Penance by Eliza Clark and I have mixed emotions about it. On one hand I love the premise and I feel like it's written well enough to where I feel like the author isn't going to clumsily stumble through her own story and fall on her face at the end like the majority of popular thrillers. But also this story suffers from having someone who hasn't been in school for a long time attempting to write teenagers. The funny thing is that whenever I see a horrible portrayal of teenagers, specifically of zoomers its never like, inaccurate portrayals of slang and trends that most teenagers cringe at, it's extremely unnatural dialogue that I don't understand how even a 30 or 40 year old can't see how awkward and cringe and flat out bad of a portrayal they're doing. You can claim that it's regional differences, even if we were all teenagers once I still don't know what it's like to be a popular mean British girl, but I'm fairly certain that actual popular mean British girls don't go around describing themselves as popular mean girls. The funny thing is that they've mentioned several times that these girls (ok it was actually like one girl but she introduced too many characters and I got confused so I can't even remember the name of the girl who said it) are trying to imitate the mean girls in popular American shows/movies. But I think that it's SO funny how instead of going for the obvious Regina George or maybe the more posh Blair Waldorf, they chose Sharpay Evans....I'm very familiar with the popular mean girl trope because I always love the girls who fall into this category and I can say with 100% certainty that none of these girls act like this either. I don't know what the author is going for but it's very painful to listen to.

her co-workers burst into cat-calls and laughter, and silco clears his throat from the front of the room.

sevika pulls away with a bright red blush, but she doesn't take her eyes off of you as she walks backwards back toward her seat. she bumps into lock. he shoves her away, and she stumbles a bit, giggling but still staring at you as she flops back into her chair.

I've always viewed her power as her having the ability to Reject phenomena. In canon she rejects the fact that people are injured. What would happen if she rejected the fact that someone was alive? That someone was in her way? Reject the injustices that led to her and her friends' world being turned upside down. Anyway I love that your hime has the spine she deserves and I'm so excited to be completely normal about aeiwam

Some Important facts about Orihime from canon:

Orihime is the #3 student in her entire (fairly large) high school. Girl Ain't Stupid- if anything, the fact that she's wildly unorthodox in her projects and STILL pulls those kinds of grades and test scores suggests that her teachers are grading her like that because her weird-ass approaches to assignments demonstrate a thorough understanding of the material, so she may actually be smarter than Uryuu, the #1 student who gives me very strong "I'm very good at taking tests and telling teachers what they want to hear, so I can pull good grades even if I have no clue what the subject is" Vibes.

Orihime cooks weird damn food, and enjoys it. She also has strange ideas about what's cute, exceptionally brightly colored clothes relative to everyone else, and does things like get lost following dragonflies for hours on end. Screams sensory processing Weirdness to me. Maybe I'm projecting a bit here, but Sensory processing disorders come with sensory euphoria too- I get to enjoy a huge variety of strange foods and the sound of rain gives me physical joy.

Orihime's best friends* are: -The School's Self-affected "weird boy who might be a delinquent or possibly just insane" guy -A Butch Jock With Anger Issues -The Crafts Club president who has So Much Gender Happening, and also sort-of grew up in a cult -The Giant, scary-looking guy who keeps smuggling small animals into school. -A Genuine sociopath whose family probably has Yakuza Connections -An extremely powerful supernatural being who is like five times her age -Keigo. This is not the friend group of a "Normal"

Taken together, these points form a constellation of THIS GIRL GOT AUTISM. LIKE SO MUCH. LEVEL 999 AUTISM MAGE. She's full of strange joy and magnificently weird and experiencing reality four steps to the left of everyone else AND SHE IS SO, SO SMART.

So in the fic, when she sees Ichigo freaking out because Rukia has been Kidnapped back to Soul Society on Bullshit criminal charges, Orihime does what every autistic person I know does, and immediately begins drafting a Solution.

Namely She begins drafting an extraction plan. She gets slightly in over her head with details about what data they need, how much and what kind of resistance they'd be facing etc. etc. until she realizes she needs some concrete answers and, without regard to social conventions like "time" and "Personal space", more or less kicks in the door to Urahara's shop at 2AM, marches directly into his bedroom and starts interrogating him about the civil services in soul society, yes it's weird you sleep naked with your cat sir but I'm not here to pass judgment I'm here to get answers you can put pants on later.

After the resounding success of their operation in Soul Society, the hardest part when Ulquiorra comes to kidnap her and gives her the completely insane circumstances of "you will be invisible and go through walls for 12 hours, prepare yourself." is not vibrating with the absolute mania of the chance to go to Los Noches and FUCK. SHIT. UP.

But every time I watch Supernatural, I see a (mostly unspoken) understanding between the brothers.

Like Dean will shamelessly flirt with or check out men around Sam, and Sam never bats an eye.

When Sam called Dean out on how him being "butch" might make people think he's overcompensating, Dean just said "right" and moved on.

When Dean spoke of his relationship with Benny to Sam, he used the word "relationship" without worrying about the implications of it (even if they weren't actually in a relationship)

When Dean told Sam that Aaron was his "gay thing," Sam moved on from it almost instantly, and Dean never felt the need to explain it away.

When Dean was flirting with that male cop, Sam had to pull him away, and Sam's only expression was annoyed.

Before Sam knew sirens could sire people without sex, he didn't react when Dean's siren was a man.

When Dean meets his celebrity crushes, he gets all flustered, and Sam is never bothered.

Been playing In Stars and Time recently and Mirabelle made Me cry on like six separate occasions because Black girls are never allowed to be characters like Mira. She's cutesy and bubbly and supported by her friends and she is canonically God's Favorite and normally I hate characters like that. But she is also Black. She looks like... Me, My friends. Her mentor, in-game, is another older Black woman. She has a community. And she's so multifaceted, she has a complicated relationship with her sexuality and talks about it, it's a level of care and detail and *attention* paid to a Black girl- who isn't even the player character! A Black girl who is just, in Your party, and the story cares so much about her. It made Me feel important, too. Like I could be important even if I wasn't butch, wasn't a protector, let Myself wear pink and be femme sometimes, which isn't something I feel very often.

I felt very similarly while playing Spiritfarer. Playing as a young black girl filled with love and light as she pieces together her own memories and grapples with the serious discussion of grief and death- I was recommended the game because I like supernatural fantasy and went "oh! She's black!" once I started it up. I haven't beaten it yet because I can't get past the one character who reminds me a lot of my late grandfather, and it's his time to go, and I don't want to say goodbye just yet. The character who reminded me of my late grandmother had just left and I did have to put the game down and have a good cry.

I suppose that's the point. To help heal the player who is likely struggling with a loss in their own family. I lost my maternal grandfather and my paternal grandmother- each pillars of their respective sides of the family- less than 9 months from each other and losing them in-game made things a little too real. Nevermind that I lost them close to 9 years ago. Now with my uncle's sudden death 2 years ago, well after I took a break from the game, I am a little leery on going back to it if not just because if someone reminds me of him I think I will cry again.

But there is something cathartic about seeing "myself" as a young black girl, hugging the souls of my loved ones goodbye, hanging onto the precious memories from my childhood as my reminder of them. Even if it makes me teary to type this out. I was that little black girl when they knew me- affectionate, bright, energetic, full of life.

Anyway. If you are in a headspace where you are safe to experience this, I think you should give Spiritfarer a try. I'm glad I did.
