I think you're really great
Just wrapped up the signposts this morning!
#asks#custom cards#i would love to put them in the proper color-pair order but it's not worth the effort#anyway super proud of these#especially white-black's Backup Squadron#the whole time i had the idea for the Support signpost to be a card that increases your support#something like "if you would support N you support N+1 instead#but then i realized that doesn't make any sense for black#and i was so lost i didn't know what to do to tie white black support together#but then it hit me like a bolt of inspiration#spawn 2 tokens to give the user more support targets and give them the modular death trigger to encourage supporting them#i think i'm gonna call that “when this dies put its counters on another creature” modular now#anyway i'm super proud of all of these#i love signpost uncommons so much i love everything about them#the only gripe i have is that Assault Leader and Mighty Warleader are pretty similar#even their names are similar#but the sheer difference in size makes up for it#and i like both of their abilities#and i like Aura of Radiance for turning all your creatures into keyword soup#and i like it and Rocket Flail for being such a nice compromise between auras/equipment and counters#they're an aura/equipment so they support those themes#but they help all your modified creatures and the easiest way to spread modification is counters#i always knew i was gonna use the modified keyword for those two#but making them an aura/equipment was a great way to help them lean into those themes since counters already have 4 signposts#before i was playing around with the idea of making them give a little extra bonus to aura/equipment like the BR having quick draw#but this is so much more elegant!#Answerer of Prayers is a really neat synergy with worship#and it encourages you to go wide with auras as opposed to Bearer of Blessings encouraging you to go tall#and Back-Alley Smith is more slow and controlly while Blade Artist helps you close out a game aggressively#same deal with Grim Recycler and Assault Leader

Gladiator Big Talk: Foundations, Black
So on the gladiator discord, (Gladiator is a competitive singleton format using the Timeless card pool on arena and you should check us out, it's great) I do a series of long, hastily written thoughts on every single new-to-arena card and call them Big Talks. Foundations is a very big set, so I've decided to move them over here! Some notes:
This is comprehensively talking about every single new-to-arena card in the main set of Foundations. If I don't bring up a card, it's probably because it's already in the format or in Jumpstart Foundations, which I'll cover later.
I'm sorting this by collector number, which, for this set is somewhat baffling, so Ctrl+F is your friend if you want to find a specific thought.
Each card is also a link to it on scryfall, so you can follow along without having the full set open.
Without further ado, let's start off with Abyssal Harvester:
Abyssal Harvester: I’ve thought about this card a while, and I think a 3/2 that needs to untap and be in a pretty specific situation to make you really happy is a lot to ask. Simultaneously needing to engineer putting your payoff into the graveyard in a specific turn and banking on it surviving is a lot of work that I’d rather just spend on a 4 drop reanimation spell.
Arbiter of Woe: I love these signpost uncommons of “you’re not supposed to cast this” because they always look weirdly appealing for gladiator, then I just remember that they’re appealing for putting into a peasant cube with reanimator spells.
Billowing Shriekmass: Y’know, I hate to drag a part of gladiator on my first tumblr dot com post about it, it’s really an amazing format, but I do miss the times where a 4/4 flier with marginal upside was like shockingly playable, and those days have been gone for years now. Unfortunately, I think that’s also the case for all magic, but I want to like this card a lot, and it’s hard to see it and know it’ll be quite bad.
Blasphemous Edict: I was pretty low on this card when I compared it to Blasphemous Act, but when I think of it as a 5 mana wrath it looks a lot better, especially as one that dodges indestructible. I think in a black and non-white control-slanted deck, I’ll want this, Season of Loss, and Damnation as my sweepers, with maybe a Languish if I want a 4th.
Bloodthirsty Conqueror: It's like Exquisite Blood if it was worth playing and could attack in, which turns out does a lot. I definitely can see this in a deck that cares about lifegain, and being a gun with Vito and the like does a lot to help.
Crypt Feaster: uuuuh sure is a common so welcome back to Vibes Report: C-, I do not have any clue about this guy and as much as I find mystery hot that cloak is barely holding on and I just don’t trust a wardrobe that reveals everything to a stiff breeze.
Gutless Plunderer: Eyy it’s not everyday we get to do two in a row! Vibes Report: A-, this dude’s having a great time and the little freak on the shoulder can get it!
High-Society Hunter: I’m not a huge fan of a boltable 5 drop grim haruspex. If you can get this to attack, it can do some good, but I’m doubtful you’re ever going to get there.
Hungry Ghoul: omnomnomnomnom any ghoul born after 1993 can’t cook… all they know is McDonalds, charge they phone, pay 1 mana and sacrifice another creature to buff, eat hot chip, and lie.
Infernal Vessel: It turns out that Archfiend’s Vessel is a lot worse when it’s 2 mana more. I know it’s a different effect but wow this card does not do itself any favors.
Infestation Sage: Planar Chaos-ass Doomed Traveler welcome in, the water’s great. Also this being an Elf is cool as hell.
Midnight Snack: I’m gonna be real: This card is actually just bad. We have plenty of Vito effects and we flat out don’t need more things that make a food on etb for the deck. It just doesn’t fill a slot the food deck needs and there’s much better cards for the slot this tries to fill.
Nine-Lives Familiar: Really cool card, also doesn't like do anything 😔
Revenge of the Rats: This card’s good in the volume dredge deck and by the way here’s a totally unrelated video.
Sanguine Syphoner: well it sure is a common mediocre creatures so it’s time for my favorite Vibes Report: A+ I don’t know what gender this cutie is but I want them.
Seeker’s Folly: Mind Rots aren’t playable in gladiator, and this one is not close to an exception.
Soul-Shackled: Welcome back kids to Vibes Report: on one hand, kind of gross arms, on the other, you get a B for girl
Stab: hehehehe stab. You know, there was actually a time where I said people should play disfigure, and even implied that one might play multiple of the effect. Don’t. Please.
Tinybones, Bauble Burglar: Gender goals frfr. I think eventually we'll have a good waste not deck, and this is the kind of effect that you want for it, rather than more discard spells
Tragic Banshee: Yup. Sure is a 5 mana limited card that calls back to a sometimes good card from checks notes JESUS THIRTEEN YEARS OLD? ok i need to lie down
Vampire Gourmand: This card intrigues me but I doubt it will do anything in practice. The truth is that this card is a medium card in 3 aspects: Turning creatures into cantrips, evasive bodies, and sac outlets, and it’s so bad at the last one that it puts into question if you really need slots for the first two, and it’s not good enough in the first two to allay any fears.
Vampire Soulcaller: God, I kind of feel bad that black has been getting so many of the Vibes Report: C-, Look, this guy’s hot but he does make me realize I’m so glad I was in a committed relationship with a cute looking guy while I clarified my bisexuality because otherwise I’d definitely (unfortunately) sleep with this guy (derogatory to me 4 years ago).
Vengeful Bloodwitch: More Blartist is more good stuff so I'll take it. Play it where you play Blartist.
Zul Ashur, Lich Lord: I'm trying to figure out if this is just good in dredgepile and the more I think about it the more I lean to "it kind of works but like does it do enough" and I think the answer is realistically no.
Exsanguinate: This is really only a good card when you are gaining 3x the life that you put into the X, and we are not the format for that. I still like it a lot in commander, but mostly as a mana sink and/or a way to pad the life total, and here it does both of those jobs pretty poorly.
Rune-Scarred Demon: A second copy of Hoarding Broodlord that has some subtle differences is nice to see, and lets you do a lot of things in certain cheaty decks like reanimator. I don’t know if this long-term has a home, but it’s certainly a card that has pretty good applications.
Vampire Nighthawk: I could see this getting played in a mono-black deck, but we have Nighthawk Scavenger and that hasn’t been putting in great numbers for a while. It’s a card that I’m very glad we have even if I think it will have at best one real home.
Zombify: 4 mana reanimation is really nice to have around, and while we have a decent few options that I’d still be putting higher, Zombify is a classic and doesn’t pull its punches, so you won’t feel bad sleeving it up.
Crossway Troublemakers: I feel like this one is like 1 mana more than I'm happy with, but it's an interesting one. Not the worst thing to Sorin in, all things considered, but it’s certainly not much to write home about.
Deadly Plot: This card definitely suffers from charm-itis, and it’s a lil surprising since the second mode isn’t a card I’d want to play anyway
Maalfeld Twins: I get that this is a bad card on purpose, but I really wished this was not 6 mana :(
Suspicious Shambler: There’s a funny aspect of this card that they’re actively trying to look like one really tall zombie and not like a human or anything. That just tickles me a lil bit.
Untamed Hunger: Uh yeah sure is the pain of a comprehensive set review sad trombone noise
Deathmark: Nah, restrictive removal is pretty bad.
Desecration Demon: We’ve come a long way since the OG Desecration Demon, but now our 6/6 flying demons come with dubious upside instead of shallow downside, and I don’t think this really operates on an axis that we haven’t outmoded, scaled past, or just never needed.
Dread Summons: I could get behind this in a dredge shell, but it hits a bunch of snags that sour me on it. Between tapped tokens, the horrible rate of mill, and the fact that milling your opponent is worse than ever with Cruise/Dig make me unenthused to sleeve it up.
Driver of the Dead: This is like Reveillark if you took it out back and shot its legs off. Don’t play this card, please.
Kalastria Highborn: While this is not a great creature and is super B intensive, putting mana into it is a huge life total swing, and that could make it worth at least testing in decks with other good vampires.
Myojin of Night’s Reach: These are the classics in “not worth it if you don’t play it as intended” and wowie. They are still very not worth it if not played as intended, and this one still isn’t worth it when played as intended, frankly.
Pulse Tracker: Ah, the ol’ DIY Savannah Lions, how we have historically not loved ye
Tribute to Hunger: This isn’t the greatest hunger…. This is just not worth it.
Vile Entomber: I think deathtouch is the only reason this card gets there in the end. Entombing is about on par with drawing 1.5 cards if you’re building correctly, and a 2/2 deathtouch on top makes this a very on-par creature for the format.
Gatekeeper of Malakir: 3 mana for an edict on a body is not bad, and I don’t think that’s changed in the decade and a half since it was first seen. I’d expect to see this in the occasional Mono Black Control deck.

Magic Experiment Log, Experiments 001-006
I love Magic: The Gathering. Shit, half the reason I’m on Tumblr is to read Maro’s blog.
One of the things I particularly enjoy is the ability to build new things. Like many players, I don’t copy popular decks, I brew my own. Usually they’re jank, sometimes they work, but I enjoy them all the same. The fun is about the process, the trying out of new ideas. And I do take a somewhat scientific approach - I don’t track numbers all that precisely, but I test ideas by experiment.
I go a bit beyond most players. I do custom card design so I can explore design space I don’t think will ever be explored. I’ve tinkered with creating entire formats - I’ve played Magic without rule 104.3b and 104.3d, just to see what that does to the metagame.
And so it should surprise nobody that, when I made a Cube, I did some weird things. I’ve been playing it for a few months now, so I’ve tried a lot of new ideas. Some of them worked really well, some didn’t. And in the spirit of scientific “publish or perish”, these are the rough results of all my sciencing the shit out of Magic.
Experiment 001: Altered Pack Structure
Most official sets consist of packs with one rare/mythic, three uncommons, ten commons, and a basic land. Some sets will swap the basic land for a common nonbasic (like a guildgate) or a themed card (a conspiracy or draft-matters card in CNS/CNS, or a contraption in UST), and some will swap a common for a double-faced card.
Hypothesis: Having only a single rare reduces drafting decision space. Having a minimum of two rares means your pack 1 pick 1 isn’t just automatically the rare.
Experiment: The pack structure is as follows: six commons, four uncommons, two rares/mythics, one dedicated multicolor slot, one dedicated “illegal” slot, and a nonbasic land. The latter three slots can be of any rarity, intended to be roughly equal between common/uncommon/rare. This gives an average of three rares, five uncommons, and seven commons per pack.
Result: Overwhelming success. The two-rare minimum has been very well received. Drafting involves a lot more tough decisions. Rares make it farther into the draft round - I’ve gotten rares as the last card in a pack! And the higher as-fan makes games less swingy. You’re much more likely to see your bombs - games have less variance. I’ve never felt that I lost because I didn’t see the one powerful card I needed - and I’ve never felt I won only because I started with the one OP card.
Experiment 002: Illegal Cards
As a fan of the more out-there cards, and as a guy who’s bought boxes of both Conspiracy and Un-sets, I obviously would want to try those cards in my Cube. But, I did not want to make it a full-on “silly” cube, rather just add a little bit of fun to an otherwise normal game.
Hypothesis: Adding a dedicated slot for whimsical cards, not legal in constructed formats, bolsters enjoyment without making the game too weird.
Experiment: A slot was added to the packs, containing silver-bordered cards, conspiracies, and draft-matters cards. Due to the low as-fan, parasitic cards were excluded - there is no host/augment, no dice-rolling-matters, no contraptions. As a singleton Cube, conspiracies needing you to note a card name were also excluded.
Result: Huge success. Players universally liked the fun cards, but keeping it checked kept the games relatively normal. Sure, sometimes you’d die to an animated library, or to a Modular Monstrosity with protection from everything, triple strike, lifelink, squirrellink and horsemanship, but it still plays like Magic.
I am slightly concerned by how rarely some cards see play. Split Screen sees play every time it’s in the pool, but I don’t think I’ve seen Gus or Extremely Slow Zombie make the cut. And Archdemon of Paliano is the only card to have effects during the draft, which I think players are overlooking.
Experiment 003: Three-Color Overlapping Archetypes
The difference between a proper Cube and a pile of cards is design. You can’t just select your favorite or most powerful cards, you need them to work together well enough that strategies exist, but not so synergistic as to eliminate strategy.
Hypothesis: A set built around enemy-color synergies within wedge-color archetypes will give a good balance of synergy and creativity.
Experiment: The Cube was constructed with wedge-color archetypes (WUR equipment, UBG poison, BRW attack triggers, RGU energy, GWB graveyard), with the intent of overlap along enemy colors (WB is aggressive but can recurse from graveyard, UR has noncreature-cast triggers, GU has proliferate, etc.). Additionally, a dedicated multicolor slot gave a very high as-fan for multicolor “signpost” cards - for each three-color archetype, one three-color card and one card of each included color pairing is included to provide guidance.
Result: Eventual success. Early iterations of the Cube were too directional, and included too many cards dedicated solely to a single archetype. But, after revisions and expansions, it seems to be working much better. Players are still able to find novel synergies (mono-green Voltron?), but they can still find direction if they need it.
Experiment 004: Multiplayer
I, like many others, am a big fan of multiplayer Magic. Most of my players come from my Commander playgroup, or my Multiplayer Modern playgroup. So it’s only natural the Cube is also multiplayer.
Hypothesis: The Conspiracy Draft model, of drafting in a group of 4-8, then if needed split into pods of 3-5, will work even with only a modest amount of multiplayer-matters cards (3 Melee, 2 Dethrone, 2 Will of the Council, 6 Council’s Dilemma, 4 “can’t attack you”, 2 goad, 1 myriad, 1 friend/foe).
Experiment: Drafts with 6+ people split into two pods for play. If we have the stamina for multiple rounds, we switch up groups each time.
Result: Expected success. It’s not really a surprise that something Wizards actually did works in a more general case. The higher variance seems to be making three-player pods play better than three-player Modern, of which I have played far too much.
Experiment 005: Non-Color-Balanced Packs
Something I have noticed I’m weak at is hate-drafting. I often end up with a surplus of cards I can make use of, and so does everyone else because I didn’t take the pick 4 bomb that wasn’t in my colors.
Prior to this experiment, I had been color-balancing individual packs. I treat colorless as a color for purposes of filling packs - the six commons are one of each color, and the uncommon slots and rare slots did not contain repeats.
Hypothesis: Producing packs with deliberate color focus will force more hate-drafting and add thoughtful decisions to the draft.
Experiment: The Cube packs were filled as follows. One pack each of each single color or colorless cards (multicolor was of that color, with an off-color ability). One pack each of each color pair. One pack each of each of each three-color wedge. Two packs of all five colors. Two packs of colorless cards.
Result: Abject failure. This led to extreme dissatisfaction. One color was present in every single player’s deck, and another color was completely absent despite having a mono-colored pack in the second round. I abandoned this experiment without even drafting the full box, emptying the half that remained to re-seed. I don’t regret the experiment - it wasn’t a “failure” as an experiment, just as a hypothesis. The experiment worked wonderfully - the data showed very strongly whether it was a good theory or not.
Experiment 006: Adding Planeswalkers
My initial version of the Cube did not have planeswalkers. Mostly because they’re hella expensive, and I was on a budget, but also because they generate a lot of value over time. You get a good planeswalker out, you dominate the game quickly.
And then I played War of the Spark limited. So clearly I had to add some, especially with proliferate being such a central mechanic in the Cube.
Hypothesis: Adding planeswalkers will be hella fun, and possibly rad.
Experiment: Twenty planeswalker cards were added. The uncommon slot got five monocolor PWs. The rare slot got five monocolor rare/mythics. The gold slot got five enemy-color hybrid uncommons and five enemy-color gold rares/mythics.
Result: Mixed, mostly positive. The hybrid planeswalkers aren’t quite a good match for the mechanics. Saheeli and Nahiri are great, Kiora isn’t on-theme but works well anyways, Kaya is a bit expensive for those aggressive colors, and Vraska just outright doesn’t fit (I have very little deathtouch, probably because of the high level of infect). The mono-color rares are very swingy, possibly stronger bombs than I wanted. But, maybe some higher variance will be good - people certainly enjoy it when they open a pack and see Gideon Blackblade.
The uncommons work the best. The monocolor ones slot in nicely to everything, and the hybrids usually fit. They don’t take over games, but they do put in the work, especially with proliferate around them.
I think that’s enough science for this post. Maybe if I leave some for later, I’ll actually post regularly.
