─── ° • ❀ ───
The gentle breeze twirls her golden locks in all directions. She hums the lyrics of You never can tell, having watched Pulp Fiction for the hundredth time last night. Her irises are fixed to the slightly damp roadside covered with fresh fallen leaves from this morning rainstorm. The last rays of sunlight caress her baby-like skin as they disappear into the horizon, painting the sky in a mixture of orange and rose.
“C’mon grandpa, you’re slow as hell!” she teases Marcus, turning her head back to stick her tongue out at him. Standing on his skateboard, he sends her the finger, scraping the pavement with his over-used black vans to gain speed and eventually catch up with her.
“That’s how the turtle won the race, dumbass,” he gently nudges her shoulder with his hand as he rides his board besides her. She gives a sharp turn of the handlebars to move her tires out of the sand and back on the pavement, giving him a death glare.
“I almost fell in the ditch, shithead!” he simply laughs, his head falling backward. His dark colored hairs, normally slicked back, are ruffled by the warm September wind, giving him a laid back look that fits him perfectly. She adores hearing his laugh; it's one of the purest and most delightful sounds. It was only recently that she heard him laugh again, having not heard it for months after the day they lost the third musketeer of their trio. It was one of the hardest moments of their lives, but sharing this kind of experience brought them closer than ever. Charlie was there for him when he hit rock bottom, stroking his back while he cried on the shower floor, freezing water running down their damped bodies. She was also by his side the first time he went to therapy, soothingly squeezing his hand before he entered the office.
“If someone had to fall in a ditch, it would be me.”
“You know that Max and I made bet on how long it would take you to fall in a ditch?” she replies, checking his reaction at the corner of her cerulean eyes. He grins.
“How much did you bet?” he curiously asks, one eyebrow arched.
“Fifty bucks,” his eyes almost snap out of their sockets. He stops, stepping off his board.
“Fifty bucks?! That’s insulting, thought I was worth more than that,” he shouts as she makes a u-turn, retracing her steps, stopping in front of him.
“I’ll give you half of it if you wait ‘till June,” Charlie sarcastically says to him, elbows leaning on the handlebars of her bicycle. He caught a glimpse of light in her gaze; a twinkle of amusement he always finds in the corners of her softly crinkled eyes when she smiles truthfully.
“Deal,” he winks at her, drawing a small laugh from her slightly parted lips. He picks up Charlie's polaroid from the basket at the front of her bike, signaling for her to ride so he can immortalize the moment for her. Marcus knows she keeps those famous polaroids in an old converse box as a source of happiness; they're memories of moments she doesn't want to forget.
He takes the little camera to his eyes, snapping a picture when Charlie turns her head to the side to look at him, smiling like there is no tomorrow. As the picture is slowly developing, he hears a squeal of tires and a squeal of surprise from the distance.
“Fuck Charlie!” he shouts, running towards her as she sits, holding firmly her right forearm. His heart tightens at the sight of her painful face, her traits are torn by pain and he can see tears gathering at the corner of her squinted blue eyes. Marcus hates to see her in pain; he knows she's not the type to complain about anything so when he sees her azure eyes filling with water, he knows it's serious.
“You got a few scratches,” he whispers, running his eyes over her legs and arms. “We’ll go to your house and clean you up, okay?” she nods, rubbing her eyes with the back of her hand. Marcus tucks his skateboard under his arm, grabbing the handlebars and seat of Charlie's bike simultaneously.
─── ° • ❀ ───
“Hold still,” his hazel eyes are focused on the mid-depth cut on her forearm. His bushy eyebrows furrowed, giving him a severe, almost cold sober look. She takes a big gulp of the rich whiskey she borrowed from her father's secret stash.
“Oh fucking hell!” she swears between her clenched teeth when the rubbing alcohol makes contact with the exposed flesh of her forearm. “That’s not the greatest feeling ever,” she whimpers, her forehead resting on his shoulder covered by his green olive shirt.
“I know, angel, I know,” he runs his hand through her blonde hair, gently stroking her scalp in a soothing way. She keeps her head resting against his shoulder, holding back the tears that threaten to run down her flushed cheeks.
“I’m usually the one taking care of you,” he knows it refers as much to all the times he fell off his skateboard as it does to when he hit rock bottom when their friend passed away. Charlie isn't used to being taken care of; she has always been able to look after herself without anyone's help.
Crying is for the weak.
She swallows her tears, putting her mask back on with a slight smile.
“Your new neighbor saw me fall,” she changes the subject, pausing to take another gulp directly from the whisky bottle. “Great way to make a first impression,” a light laugh escapes from her lips, but she halts when she notices his gaze turning away almost discreetly. “What’s wrong?”
Over the years, she has learned to read him like the palm of her hand; she knows he looks away to the left when he is hiding something from her and that he scrapes the back of his neck when he is embarrassed.
“I-I had sex with her,” he blurts out, avoiding her gaze while he still applies pressure on the bandage covering the wound on her forearm.
“Holy shit,” her eyes widened, not expecting this kind of disclosure. “Wait, what about Padma?”
“You know she is not my girlfriend, Charlz,” he sighs, finally sustaining her non-judgmental azure irises. It' s one of the things he likes about her; she never judges him and even if she did, he wouldn't know since she hides it so well.
“Was it good?” she does not insist about Padma, knowing perfectly well that she is the first one to know. He doesn't answer, looking thoughtful as if a million thoughts are running through his head. He steals the bottle of alcohol from her, gulping down a few ounces of the throat-burning liquid.
“What aren’t you telling me, Marcus?”
He shuts his eyes, exhaling loudly.
“I don’t know if I was good… God, I don’t even know if she came!” her heart tightens; he looks distraught and she knows that this is a big deal to him, after all, he just lost his virginity. He breathes heavily, his jaw as tightly clenched as his fists.
“Show me.”
“What?!” he opens one eye, eyebrows furrowed as if he was questioning if she was being serious.
“Show me what you did, I’ll tell you if it’s good,”
“You’re drunk, Charlz…I don-” he stops as soon as her silver rings coated hands grip the hem of his olive shirt, grazing the soft skin of his lower abdomen with her fingertips. Sitting on her knees, she brings her head up to his neck, pressing her lips against the skin. The feeling of her wet lips on his burning skin sends a shiver running through his spine.
“I’m sober enough to remember everything and give you my consent,” she whispers to his ear and he almost moans when she slightly nibbles his lobe. Her hands slips to the back of his neck, forcing him to hover over her as she lies on her back.
Both his hands are lingering on the buckle of her belt, struggling to undo it. She clutches his chin with one hand, plunging her reassuring gaze into his. He looks nervous, his hands trembling slightly when he takes off her jeans. She presses her lips to his Adam's apple, feeling him tense up at first, but relax as she sensuously slides her tongue up to his sculpted jaw.
“A-are you good with two figers?” he nervously asks, his right hand resting on the edge of her panties.
“Yes,” he hesitantly slips his hand into her panties, parting her legs with his other hand before sliding his index and middle fingers up and down her folds. She can see him blush when an almost quiet moan escapes her lips at the feeling of his fingers inside her core. He pumps them in and out slowly, as if he was afraid to hurt her.
“Try to curl them in a ‘come here’ movement,” she demonstrates with her own fingers. He nods and mimics her actions, making her whimper under him.
“That feels good,” she encourages him. “What did you do next?” she softly asks, rubbing her thumb against his cheek to sooth him.
“Hum, well, we-um, you know, did it,” he says, blushing like a little child who just got his first kiss with the popular girl.
“You didn’t go down on her?” she asks, looking quite shocked. He seemed clueless. “I mean, you didn’t use your mouth?”
“Uh no, should I have?”
“You boys really know nothing about female pleasure,” she sights. “Try watching lesbian porn next time, you will learn A LOT more,” He almost chokes, not expecting to hear this come out of his best friend's lips while his fingers are still inside her. They've always been comfortable with each other, but not to the point of talking about the kind of porn they listen to. The idea of her best friend watching porn and getting herself off almost made him cum in his pants.
“You do know what a cunniligus is, right?”
“God, Charlz, I’m not five years old! Yes, I know what it is!” he exclaims, his ego lightly bruised by her question.
“Well, show me then, playboy,” she challenges him, a cocky smile slipping on her lips. the alcohol going slightly to her head.
He pulls her to the edge of the mattress, kneeling at the foot of the bed between her legs. His lips kiss the skin on the inside of her thighs, sucking it until he sees a dark red mark appear. He gets rid of her underwear in the blink of an eye before placing her legs over his shoulders. He darts his tongue out of his mouth, licking a long strip between her folds without giving her the chance to acknowledge what was going on. He stops once his tongue rests on the bundle of nerves, licking around it in a circular motion.
“Fuck,” she moans. “I wasn’t expecting that.”
“You really think I've never watched lesbian porn?” he teases her, biting the inside of her thigh, making her body jolt. He dives back his head to her core, sucking her clit into his mouth.
At leats he know where the clit is.
"Oh my god Marcus," she moans, squirming against his grip. He places his arm over her lower abdomen, pinning her body against the mattress. She can feel his two fingers sliding back into her core, the sudden feeling causing her hips to buck up against his face.
“Are you gonna be a good girl and cum for me, hun?” he praises her, fingers curling inside her just like she taught him. She could barely feel herself, letting out a series of high-pitched moans as Marcus tongue was working on her bundle of nerves.
“Fuck, I’m gonna cum,” she whimpers, her head pressed down against the matress. Her fingers tangle in his dark hair, tucking at the roots as she let out a cry, the euphoric feeling taking over her body for a moment. Marcus looks up to see her eyes shut tightly, her legs shaking on his shoulders. He can feel her core pulsating around his fingers as she comes down from her high.
He took a mental picture of her, engraving this moment in his memory forever.

Me and Graham decided on meeting in a small bar on the same road, a couple hours later in the evening. Once my shift was over, I had scurred off to my little flat in order to put together an outfit that was appropriate. I didn’t want to wear something that was too overtly sexual - hell, I wouldn’t even have the courage to be able to wear something like that - so I decided upon wearing an oversized t-shirt and baggy jeans. Very 90s. However, me meeting up with Graham was probably going to be more for him than it was for me - although I was so happy that me and him finally were able to take our ‘friendship’ somewhere outside of the small record shop that he sees all my life in, it was very evident that he was in need of someone to be there for him. Now, understanding his demeanor and overall attitude to things from the multiple times that we had conversated, I had hoped to be the one that he needed. Although there was many time I could’ve attempted such a gathering previously, you never know when would be the right moment to chip in and attempt to portray the care that you have stored internally for that significant person, and how they would react to that. For Graham it was a much more awkward situation; the only times of our communication were technically only professional, from a worker providing help and service to a customer. That was how esoteric we were to one another - practically known strangers. If I had come across Graham in a supermarket and he had noticed me, chances are that we wouldn’t interact, the only communication we would be able to branch out to one another being a simple ‘Oh hi! You alright?’. You had to build a sort of relationship with someone over a period of time in order to be able to do something like I did, and that is minusing the amount of nerves you'd have, as well as the courage you’d have to give yourself.
After I had finished with my constant worrying about how this meet-up was going to turn out, I left the house to go to the bar. The walk there felt as if I had been repeating the same events that had occurred during the day, just at a different moment in time. Hardly anybody was in the streets, which was quite ordinary at this hour of day, though it always seemed as if nobody left their homes. As I walked past countless convenience stores, hairdressers and fast-food places, which proved to show there was residency above them from the brick wall built on top, contrasted against windows placed as an outlook to life, very ironically used as to convey that nobody was ever leaving their homes, it proved to me just how mundane and repetitive life had become. The distance apart between each sheet of glass to the one adjacent to it being monochrome. Constant. Unchanging. Almost how all of our lives have been built to follow a system of continuous, resolute living, perpetually ignoring how it forces our lives, that have so much undermined potential, to be wasted, to the point we are simply dependent on enjoying life as we admire it. From a window in our bedroom, to which it becomes boring - as all you are ‘admiring’ is the same sight, every single time. And though this way of living may not be satisfactory, or enjoyable in the slightest, protesting against it would not do anything. Strikes from work would not do anything; you still need to live, and to live you need to earn money, money earned from working. It’s a ceaseless cycle which destroys the mere idea of a dream, aspiration, or motivation to carry on. In turn, what is received is the attractiveness of sadness, distress, and melancholy. You cannot shame those for being addicted to something harmful; if there is no point created for their lives except to be a little pawn on the chessboard of this planet, to take a risk and rebel against it is all you can do - though it would only put you in a situation which can cause more harm than good to yourself.
Once I had arrived at the bar, I decided to wait by the entrance so there would not cause confusion for Graham as to whether I was inside the building or not. I had noticed the skies begin to significantly darken in their calming shades of blue, instigating the advent of the evening to commence, however it was not dark enough to see sparkles in the empyrean yet. Though it was beautiful to stare at the single-coloured canvas, questioning the mere idea as to how it had formed such a shade of peace, but also existentially questioning how things come to be. Nevertheless, my admiration for the skies was quickly interrupted. “Hi y/n.”
Shifting my head into alignment with his, I had been greeted by the sight of Graham, facial expression clearly evident of nervousness, though it was attempted to be masked from a small smile curving on the corner of his lip. I noticed he was still in the same clothing as he had been in our previous encounter at the record shop earlier in the day, which caused a grin to paint itself on my facial expression. “Hi Graham,” I chriped, connecting eyes with him for a second, widening my smile that was already plastered on my face. “Let’s go inside.”
Inside the bar was nothing much I hadn’t expected; smoke surrounding the atmosphere from cigarettes, and due to the time being early, the place wasn’t as crowded, but you’d assume it to be from the clouds of smoke that welcomed you once you pushed the door open - you could hardly see the lengthy oak wood table separating you from the myriad amount of drinks that could be supplied to you by a simple asking. Ushering over to the nearest booth available, me and Graham sat opposite each other. The booths were always much more comfortable to sit and relax in, the cushioning of the sofa was almost that of a pillow; it was so cozy it was hard not to fall asleep on them. It was a much better choice of seating rather than the tall timber stools attached to the bar. I never found it appealing to sit there and have a chat with someone; it felt as if my privacy had been snatched away with ears surrounding every place my eyes could land upon. It's a much more peaceful atmosphere in a booth, which I had assumed would be a preferable place for Graham, shown from his quiet demeanour. His quietness was something that engaged me so deeply into him as a person - he wasn’t the type to rush to the bar, get drunk, and go off with the first person he had seen, who he hadn’t properly connected with or perhaps spoken to at all. He was much more down to earth, potentially from the amount of fame he had gained over the past couple years; it makes those yearn for silence, and in turn changes their perspectives and outlooks on simple things like outings with friends, for some may avoid them at all costs out of anxiety and fear of being noticed. You’d think that’s the absolute of their desires, being famous, stealing the hearts of so many, but it becomes so much more than that. The press picking out every ‘flaw’ you have or things that you do, the crowds of youngsters dying to get an autograph as if their lives depend on it, the paparazzi perpetually flicking their cameras only because you trotted on the same street to go to the same shop that every normal person goes to… The amount of eyes constantly on you gets overwhelming. I empathised with those who turned to drugs and alcohol to escape horrible feelings like these. Just like Graham.
“Do you want me to get you anything?” I asked Graham sweetly, my smile still on my face.
“Yeah sure, I’ll have a beer.” He responded, our eyes glued to one another's which made me notice the eyebags that had drooped onto the top of his cheeks; it was very evident that he had attempted to nap before meeting me, which made my heart swell out of pity for him - it was obvious he was struggling to even sleep these days.
I nodded before heading to the bar and ordering our drinks. Waiting for our drinks at the bar gave me time to think over everything that was currently happening. It felt as if my entire day had vanished to this one moment where I had unexpectedly landed myself ordering beverages at a bar with the one and only Graham Coxon. It was a wonder to think about how he was feeling at this current moment. He didn't seem as if he was doing well at the moment, he always seemed so exhausted, and his social skills had become very poor over a couple of weeks. It went from him being very calm and candid in our short encounters, slyly recommending each other music with subtle hints of our liking toward each other, to him forming a much more apparent stutter in comparison to the one he already had, as well as being unable to connect eyes with me for a interminable period of time - it was evident that things were progressively getting worse for him, though I wasn’t going to force him into speaking about anything. I just wanted him to be aware that he had at least a friend there for him, potentially that being the girl that he would always see at his local record store.
Walking over back to the booth, I handed him his pint of beer. “Thank you,” he mustered, almost instantly taking a sip from it before noticing the drink I had bought for myself. “Orange juice?”
I laughed slightly at his shocked reaction as I lit myself a cigarette and took a hit from it, him definitely not expecting that of all drinks. “I don’t really like to drink, it never makes me feel that good.”
“But you smoke?” He questioned, a confused expression plastered on his face, paired with a grin.
“Smoking helps with stress, alcohol makes you drunk and gives you hangovers which simply ruin your day,” I answered back, taking a sip from my drink. “Also orange juice is literally the best juice, alcohol tastes like shit you know.”
A small chuckle escaped out of Graham’s throat, causing my eyes to land back onto him again. I gained the perception that he felt somewhat better about actually speaking with someone, which made me feel so touched and taken aback; I had genuinely felt my heart skip a beat out of sadness and yearning for him. He genuinely deserved better than what was going on with him mentally and physically, and the fact that he couldn’t even celebrate the release of his band’s 6th album was paining - he couldn’t attend a lot of the sessions, not out of detest towards any of his band members, but because he mentally couldn’t bring himself to. He was isolating himself without realising, or he may have realised, but couldn’t do anything to stop it. “I must agree on that… But orange juice is too sweet,” He replied, scoffing. “It’s definitely not that much better than a pint of beer, love.”
Shaking my head out of offense towards his last remark, I inhaled my cigarette once again before exposing the smoke from my lungs. Diverting my stare to the ashtray in the middle of the booth, I examined the built-up ash on the tip from the roll of tobacco crumble off from a single flick of the wrapped up paper. “Anyways, how are you?” I asked him, simultaneously offering him a cigarette whilst doing so to avoid any awkwardness.
After taking a cigarette from the packet I owned, then lighting it, he answered. “I’m alright. What about you?”
“Apart from being offended by you saying orange juice is gross, I’m alright too,” I joked, earning another laugh from Graham. “You seem tired.”
Sighing slightly, I watched him scan the room before answering. “Yeah, I am. What gave that away?”
“Your eye bags, you look like you haven’t slept,” I responded, hoping that what was leaving my mouth wouldn’t come across as offensive in any way. “Not in a rude way, though.”
“In all honesty, I haven’t really been able to sleep recently. Not a clue why.” He replied, taking a hit from his cigarette before copying my actions from earlier and erasing the gathered dust onto the ashtray.
“Oh, I understand that,” I said, taking a long drag of the cancer stick before replying. “Same thing happens to me when I’m stressed.”
As the night went on, we spoke about all sorts of things, trying to get to know one another much more as we were so intrigued by each other’s presence. Over time, he opened up much more, his poise changing from being a quiet, dismal, bereaved person, isolated from society, to one that seemed as if he was enjoying himself by hanging out with a friend. Seeing a beam constantly illustrated on his face made me realise this outing meant more than just ‘meeting a friend’. It was leaving the house for the first time in ages, to simply have a good time with someone. He was gentrifying the bare human emotions that he had forgotten were calloused out of anger inside himself. The atmosphere is much different when we’re separated by the till in the record store, the only conversations we could tend to have surrounding music or the weather that day. I felt so much more connected to Graham in this given moment, and knowing that he was gaining pleasure from this made me feel so much happier. Finally, he seemed content, relaxed, and much more aware of his surroundings, not caught up entirely by his mind and the evilness that he would be manipulated by. It was as if from this simple meet-up, he had realised that there was so much more to life than staying at home, pent up with his own thoughts; to his dismay. And though it can be extremely difficult to overcome the hurdles of not believing everything your brain implements to your mind, the important part was that he was making progress. By merely speaking with another person, about topics completely contrasting the negativity resident in his brain, it takes his mind off of things, and would allow the realisation that he is able to overcome these struggles, with the right support.
We hadn’t realised just how long we had been conversing for, until the room began pouring with young adults ready to enjoy a night with their friends. A quick glance at the clock gave the hour away; it was nearing midnight. The time was hardly wasted, we had both created a friendship and connection with one another which bloomed like roses during the spring seasons. Absolutely beautiful. I knew that what we had formed with each other would last for at least a significant amount of time, and I definitely hoped that it would. “Let’s get going, it’s getting a bit crowded right now.” I said, getting up from my seat - Graham nodding along and following me out.
There was a distinctive change in temperature inside the bar in comparison to the streets. The breeze was more prominent, with the skies now pitch black accompanied with the twinkle of the stars and the picturesque glow of the moon. We both began walking to the end of the street, having no idea what was about to occur, going along with it as if there was nothing else in the world except us two, as if it was just ours, and that nothing else mattered at all. This shared moment between us was the only thing able to plague our minds, for everything else that crossed our minds seemed to be insignificant, with no importance to our lives from here on, no matter how much it had afflicted our minds from apprehension hours prior to this moment. Oh, the vulnerable silence shared between us. How much importance it held towards aiding our minds, providing a certain mental clarity that was simply unheard of, as if a certain point of synchronicity in time was exposed between us, forming it as though, as banal as life is day-to-day was always, there was euphoria. Subconsciously, we were both communicating with each other in a sort of telepathy that was so rare in newly flourished relationships like ours. It was as if I had always been close with Graham, as if he was always a cogent figure in my life, that today was only just another catch-up session after not being able to talk with one another for a significant period of time. We both enjoyed ourselves, and there was no need to say anything about it. It felt as though if one of us spoke, it would erase all the memories of the occasion shared in the bar previously. Nothing could explain the elation my body was feeling at this time; from life seeming so meaningless and dull, experiencing something like this amount of joy came as such a shock to my body - it felt as if I had been drugged with so much alcohol that I was witnessing junctures that were only fragments of my imagination.
Stopping our slow pace at the end of the road, I turned my body to face Graham’s, him copying the same actions as me. Briefly, I stared lovingly into his eyes, a smile perched on my lips, him reciprocating with a beam, purely out of content, not mannerisms. Turning my head to stare at his hands, which awkwardly embraced one another, I mustered enough courage to form an embrace with both my palms - him slightly taken aback at first, to which he quickly went along with the moment. His hands were soft, delicate, and held warmth interlocked with mine. We simply stood there, hands laced together, inhaling the brisk air whilst slow waves of air gushed between us. Nothing could get more perfect than this. It was evident that between us, it was definitely more than a simple friendship, and it was obvious that both participants were not objecting against such passion to be compromised into something more. The action of holding his hand gave the notion that he was not alone in everything that he was undergoing; it was there for reassurance, as if it was me indirectly saying, I know you’re struggling, you don’t have to tell me, and I can tell you seem lonely, but I’m here for you. And I won’t ever leave, or let go.
“See you soon, Graham.”

What if Sirius escaped from Azkaban sooner... you can also read this oneshot here
Remus could remember it clearly. It wasn’t all that long ago. A year or 2, maybe? It’s hard to keep track.
James and Lily died and Sirius went to Azkaban. Peter was dead too, but he could care less.
It had been darkening skies for what seemed like eternity. Not just for himself, Remus was sure of it, everyone could feel it. The war was just simmering down, but could that really be the end of it? Trust was a fickle thing. You can’t bet your life on it, or anyone else's. Truth was in the same boat. Lies were a swirl of black and white with no signals to guide you.
But the truth, the truest of truths, was that the feeling never dimmed. And it was as heartbreaking as it was fulfilling. Did he believe that Sirius killed them? No, but everyone else did. And Remus would be just as doomed to express that.
--
“Moony, look,” Sirius had nudged him slightly. The two were splayed on the grass, under the shade of a kindred oak tree. The Summer holidays were coming up and Spring was livid.
“Hm?” He bent his next up sleepily to see what it was. A little butterfly was perched upon Sirius’ knee where he sat. Remus smiled. “I think it likes you.”
It was his turn to smile now. Sirius hummed in agreement. “Did you know,” he started and Remus sat up next to him. “That butterflies represent hope?”
“No, where’d you get that?” He aimlessly picked at the grass in front of him as Sirius continued.
“A book?”
“A book?”
“Yes, I’m sure you know what that is, Moony.” He smirked.
“Ha, Ha,” he deadpanned. “What a load of useless knowledge you are.” Remus leaned to the side so that he was leaning on Sirius’ side with his shoulder to rest his own head on.
“Useless! I’ll have you know this might come in handy!”
“And when could that be?” He laughed.
“I don't know,” Sirius admitted. “Sometime.”
“Sometime?”
“Yeah.”
“You aren’t very convincing.” Remus teased.
“Sirius grinned. “You still love me though.”
He pressed a kiss on his cheek. “Yeah, but that didn’t take any convincing.”
“No hope either?”
He laughed. “Unless you’re talking about my mum then no, I don't think so, love.”
“Maybe some other time then.” Sirius leaned his head on top of his.
“If you say so,” Remus smiled. He looked back ahead and the butterfly was gone.
--
Remus tried to convince Dumbledore into letting him take care of Harry. It didn’t work, obviously. His condition wasn’t suitable for raising a child. He couldn’t disagree. But, Harry was now stuck with some of Lily’s muggle relatives. The Dursleys if he remembered right. Not that Remus had anything against muggles. His mum was one so how could he? But for Harry to grow up without knowing anything about James and Lily? Well, that was the problem. Dumbledore seemed not to care. Perhaps he had other things to do rather than taking care of the next generation of wizards.
He visited them once, the Dursleys. Petunia was a thin little woman with pouty lips. There weren’t many similarities to Lily in her, but Remus could recognize one: her eyes. They were the very same as Lilys, and the very same as Harry’s. She wouldn’t let him in to see Harry. He didn’t even see a peek into the house to look at any other people living there. Petunia claimed to know him from “The Pictures”.
It was well known that Lily loved to take photos. She had an old polaroid camera, the muggle kind. It would print out photos right as you’re taking them. James, Peter and Sirius were obviously very fascinated. She took it everywhere. It hung from a strap around her neck. Remus could recall a few of the photos she took.
There was one of all of them sleeping on the Common Room couch after falling asleep while trying to study. Another Lily charmed to move like the painting they had in the castle. It was one of James and Lily dancing. James had just proposed as Lily, of course, said yes. Remus, Sirius, and Peter were hidden by a nearby tree to watch the outcome. Lily loved dancing. It was quite honestly, the perfect moment. Remus never figured out where that photograph went.
He had the teary-eyed job of cleaning their home after the Potter’s death. But he could never figure out where the specific photo disappeared to.
--
“Wait, wait hold on!” Remus could see Lily grinning as she released herself from James’ embrace. They didn’t know him, Peter, and Sirius were standing behind three separate trees watching them. James finally got the courage to ask Lily to marry him. He bought the ring 3 months prior but was much too nervous. In these times, he wanted to make sure to keep time precious. Who knew how long they had left? So, he decided he wanted to spend however long they had left with Lily. And they were destined to be together anyway, it didn’t even feel rushed.
“What are you doing?” James let go and watched her. Lily took her camera from the strap around her neck and placed it on top of the dull brick wall to their right. It was this small alcove area near Hogwarts. James thought it to be sentimental to propose where they met so many years ago. Remus thought it was sweet.
She scrambled to get her wand out of her back pocket and casted a quick charm on the top of the camera. They couldn't hear the murmur that escaped her lips as she did it. She walked back toward James with a smile on her face.
“So, what was that?” He placed a quick kiss on her cheek.
“When I press the button to snap a photo on that,” she pointed to the camera. “It should come out like one of those live photos they have in Hogwarts. Even though it’s muggle made.”
James laughed. Like, really laughed.
“What?” She hit him lightly with her wand.
“I just proposed to you but It looks like I’m marrying you and you’re captured memories.” He smiled softly down at her.
Lily reached up and adjusted his glasses to sit right on his nose. “You certainly are.”
They started swinging in tune to an imaginary song together and the wind hummed the melody. James spun her around, under his arm before continuing the dance. Lily quickly reached her hand out to press record.
The two danced and held each other softly.
Remus turned his head when he heard a sigh. He looked to his right to see Sirius looking at him.
“I forgot the cloak, how do we get out of her without them seeing?” He whispered.
Remus shrugged. “Run for it?” He moved his head back to see Peter two trees away and he nodded in agreement.
Sirius made a look that said ‘if you say so’ and motioned for Remus to come over quickly.
“What if we just waited for them to leave? James is gonna freak when he sees us here after telling us not to follow him.” Peter said, closer to the two of them now.
“Um, I don't think waiting here with them slobbering over each other is going to be very fun for us.”
All three of them looked over at the couple. Who was now simply talking to each other.
“Ew, heteros,” Sirius grimaced. Remus laughed quietly.
“Okay,”Peter started. “Count of three we go east, toward the lake, and then, hope James doesn't catch us.”
Sounded like a good plan.
“Right then, One, two, and three!”
Sirius, being as forgetful as he is, might have mixed up easts and wests. Luckily there were more trees scattered to hide where he was. Unfortunately, there was not enough sound to cover Peter’s yells.
“YOUR OTHER EAST, PADS!” He yelled at him, hands cupping his lips.
“Peter, shut up! They’re gonna hear us.” Remus scolded.
“We already did!” Lily replied coolly and out of vision. Peter and himself poked their head out from behind the tree.
“OH FUCK, YOU SAID EAST NOT WEST DIDN’T YOU?” Another yell came from a few yards away.
Remus held in a muffled laugh but relaxed when he heard James and Lily.
They walked over.
“You know I literally saw you all follow me, right?” James said, leaning against the wall.
“Obviously not,” Remus replied.
“Oooo, group picture!” Lily grinned and turned around to prop up that stupid camera once again.
The last thing Remus could remember laughing at was when Sirius came running back saing, “GET MY GOOD SIDE!”
--
Remus got in bed late into the night. He stumbled around the nearly pitch-black room and crawled into the warmth of countless quilts and pillows. The dreams he silently screamed in the night were the most comforting that he’s felt in a while. It was still hard to sleep alone. Or with anyone else for that matter, but that didn’t happen often.
He once dreamt that these past few years had just been a sinking ship. Some people caught in a rainstorm. A curse planted by thieves. He woke up thinking that it had all been imaginary. That it was in his head. Remus could basically hear Sirius' voice in his ear. “Don't worry, Moony. It’ll turn out alright. We’ve swam together and we’ll sink together, right?” What a surprise it was when he was wrong.
Most people would be wishing for it to all be a joke. For everything to go back to normal. Remus was much too realistic to think that way. He had to keep in mind his condition. Maybe it was for the best. He knew he’d be the first to die if it were by natural causes. The moons weaken his body month by month. It’s a wonder he hadn’t passed already. And for someone to be bitten at such a young age? Unthinkable that they’d live past 30. He was to be 24 in March, time drew faster than he could keep up with.
He’s been able to stay in his and Sirius’ old muggle flat. Sirius paid it off before going to Azkaban and it was similar to staying there. Not that he wanted to. Every corner had some sort of sentiment tied to it. Yet Remus could never bear to take anything down. For the past 2 years the same photos have been getting dusty, the magnets on the fridge have been losing grip, the couch had some new found stains, and the coffee table had prints of mugs scattered like freckles.
It was the ground floor which was unfortunate. The upstairs neighbor didn’t enjoy being quiet. Plus, it felt more invading. All the people on the street could simply just look through the window or put their ear against the wall and hear whatever was going on. Not much, usually. Remus didn’t have a lot of people over. Just himself. He didn’t want to go back to any wizarding towns. No, that was too disgraceful.
There were always two responses when people saw him. It’s one or the other, neither being very pleasant to hear. The first was sympathy: “Oh, you were the one whose friends died. I’m so sorry, dear. Oh and one was sent to Azkaban for the murder of them! My, how horrible. I’m very sorry for your loss.” The second was worse: “So where were you when the Potter’s died? Did you not try to protect them? What about that other one, who gave up his inheritance for a sinful life? Oh, he’s gone to Azkaban. Hmm, I’m glad you were the one who got away…Somehow… ”
And so he gave up going out to places with people he knew. Loneliness was better than being ridiculed.
Sleep was a tedious project that crept up when unwanted and hid itself when needed. Remus pulled the covers tighter and over his ears.
A warm light flickered outside. A fire?
Muggles normally didn’t use candles or anything while walking down a street. That's what the sidewalk lamps were for.
The light burned and flickered.
He saw someone walking on the sidewalk. Young, he thought, maybe in use of a good washing, though.
Remus thought nothing of it.
When morning came a note could be found on his doorstep, not even in his mailbox. Which was weird because there was a code to get into the apartment building.
Harry’s alright, I hope you are too.
At the bottom of the torn letter was a familiar paw print of a love he once knew.

⭒
December, 1979
Turning thirty was not something you looked forward to.
It was a big number, the number at which everyone expected you to have your life together, be married and have children, have a steady job.
Well, you could check one of those boxes.
As the newly-appointed tour photographer for Queen, you were well-liked, and thus had no fears of unemployment in the near future.
You’d gotten quite close with the members of Queen over the past month, during the aptly-named Crazy Tour, sharing late nights and early mornings with the four musicians. Late nights and early mornings had a funny way of bringing out the true personalities of people, because lack of sleep meant that no one had a filter, and your mutual exhaustion had made you the best of friends with the band you were travelling with.
You liked to go dancing with John, when nobody else would, because Brian couldn’t dance for the life of him, and Roger hated disco, and Freddie was often busy.
You went with Brian to the science museums he wanted to visit in many of the cities where you stopped, because everyone else had had enough of his rambling. Brian was talkative when he was talking about something he cared about, and it was a sort of reprieve for you not to be the one talking— to tour managers, to publicists, to press, to the lighting department who spoke in riddles, to the security guards in various nations that did not speak English.
Freddie loved shopping, for anything and everything, and was ever so pleased to have a companion on his many expeditions in search of rare records, paintings, clothes.
And Roger… Well, Roger. What could you say about Roger?
Roger was the in-between moments. Not that he wasn’t around— because he was, and practically everywhere you looked— but because whenever things seemed to slow down, or grow drearily quiet, or when you stood at the eye of the storm that was the never-ending flood of work that came as part of your employment with Queen, Roger was there, with an easy smile and a striking insightfulness.
He became the quiet moments when he took you to see strange, foreign films on off-nights, showed you forgotten corners of sprawling cities across the continents, or called you over to read you a quote from whatever book was currently occupying his headspace.
One such night, you were sitting in the games room of a hotel, cleaning one of your cameras, as Brian and John attempted to beat one another’s pinball scores, as Freddie sat watching telly with a few friends, and a handful of crew members played an intense game of pool.
You had taken a seat on one of the two sofas in the room, leaving ample space, should someone else want to sit down, but Roger occupied an entire couch to himself, feet up at one armrest, head at the other. He’d been wearing headphones, plugged into a brand-new Sony Walkman portable cassette player, the one which both band and crew had gawked over when he’d first bought it, back in July. But now he took the headphones off, mussing his blonde hair— recently cropped— and sat up.
“Hey,” he said, and you looked up. “Come listen to this.”
With a small sigh, you carefully deposited your camera on the coffee table, and crossed over to the other side of the space to join Roger.
You flopped down at his side, and he looped his arm through yours, pushing his reading glasses up on his nose before softly clearing his throat.
“What is that feeling when you’re driving away from people,” he read quietly, “and they recede on the plain till you see their specks dispersing?”
“I don’t—”
“Shh,” Roger peered at you over his glasses, nudging your shoulder with his, “I’m not finished.”
“Oh,” you said. “Well, sorry. Go on, then.”
“It’s the too-huge world vaulting us,” Roger continued, “and it’s goodbye. But we lean forward to the next crazy venture beneath the skies.”
“It’s beautiful,” you murmured.
Roger smiled. “It’s us,” he said, and then said nothing more, until you relaxed into his side and sat there with him as he read in silence, and your eyes fell shut and your mind fell into a dream.
With the days, the tour went on, and as the date of your birthday approached, you took great care to pretend that it did not.
But your birthday had always been an ordeal for you, and you weren’t doing particularly well at hiding the sense of impending doom that came over you, when there was only a week until the day.
John noticed, that much was obvious, but said nothing, ever respectful of your personal matters as you were of his.
Brian noticed, but only asked what was wrong in such a roundabout way that you felt inclined to say he had not noticed at all, or was too polite to ask directly.
Freddie noticed, and asked outright what was bothering you, but he did so right before going onstage, and refused to perform before you had answered his question. So you answered, albeit untruthfully, with a hurried, “Nothing!” to make him get the fuck onstage.
And Roger noticed.
He caught your arm the day before your birthday, as they were all departing the stage in the wake of raucous cheers, a towel slung around his neck as he caught his breath from the physical exertion that was playing the drums. He pulled you off to the side before you could protest, before Freddie and the others could drag the both of you off to some party, and looked at you in such a way you thought he’d stare right through your very heart.
“What?!”
“What’s wrong?” he asked, folding his arms with an inquisitive expression.
“Wrong? Nothing’s wrong.”
Roger snorted. “‘Course it is. You’ve been like this for weeks. What’s the matter?”
You shrugged your shoulders in discomfort, avoiding his gaze. “It’s—”
“If you say nothing one more time, I’ll go get Brian and ask him to explain zodiacal light, and we’ll be stood here for literal hours before we can get any sort of food or drink or bed. So spit it out, because I worry about you, and I promise I’ll leave you alone.”
He stared you down, and you felt a sudden compulsion to embrace him for having cared enough to ask about you, to take the time to ask about you.
With a heavy sigh, you conceded your secrets to him, as simply as had you been a book he’d opened, intending to read from cover to cover.
“It’s my birthday—”
He frowned, “When?”
“Tomorrow—”
“Tomorrow?” Roger balked. “Why the bloody hell didn’t you tell us? We would have organised something!”
“No, no, I don’t want you to make a fuss—”
“Well, what if I want to make a fuss?”
“You want to—”
He grasped your hand, and with the contact, your heart clenched. “You deserve to be fussed over,” he told you, earnestly. “Don’t you get that?”
Your mouth had fallen open, and you now pressed your lips together, glancing down at the floor.
“No,” you mumbled. “I don’t get that.”
“And so you’ve been living your life wrong,” said Roger. “Get that into your head, love.”
It was strange, how words so simple could strike a chord, but there was a lump in your throat when you swallowed, and when you nodded, you couldn’t look at him.
“C’mon,” he said. “Let’s go back to the hotel. I’m sure you’re as tired as I am.”
You nodded again, avoiding his eyes, and he set off.
He didn’t let go of your hand.
You didn’t mind.
And as testament to Roger’s assertion, when you had parted from him and gone to your hotel room, you’d changed and fallen asleep as soon as your head had hit the pillow.
The following day was your birthday, and a day without a scheduled show, so you slept in. No one would miss you for a few hours, you thought, and indeed, no knocks roused you from your sleep until you got up, well into the afternoon.
You ran into Freddie in the hallway, and, suddenly possessed by the notion that you should do something fun on your birthday, even if no fuss was to be made, you asked Freddie if he wanted to go with you to see a movie, and where the others were, should they wish to come as well.
“No, sorry darling, I’ve got a thousand things to do before tomorrow, and I’m afraid I’ve got no idea where anyone else is.” He pursed his lips. “In fact, I’ve been looking for those three idiots for the better part of an hour.”
“That’s… rather strange,” you said, in all honesty.
“Rather,” Freddie agreed. Then he clasped his hands. “I’m going to keep looking for them, if you don’t mind. But enjoy your film, and I’ll see you at dinner?”
Your heart dropped, but of course, the great Freddie Mercury was a busy man, so naturally, this was to be expected. “See you at dinner,” you replied, and let him be on his way.
You wandered the hotel for a little while, perhaps ten minutes or so, before you came upon Brian, who had pink-flushed cheeks and wore quite the coat— bulky, and oddly overstuffed, like some sort of armchair.
“Hey,” you said in greeting. “Freddie’s looking for you.”
“Freddie’s— oh, is he? Right. Well. Better find him then before he loses his temper, ha ha.”
You raised your eyebrows. “Are you okay, Brian?”
“What?” he folded his arms around his body, in an awkward fashion, because he was clearly not accustomed to the bulk upon his frame. “Nothing. I mean, yes, I’m fine, yes. I’ll go find Fred.”
And then he hurried down the hall, before you could open your mouth to ask him if he was free to go see a film.
“Never mind,” you muttered, and proceeded in the direction you had been going before.
Two down, two left. This was truly going to be a rotten birthday, if you were to go to see a film on your own. Not that there was anything wrong with that, aside from the glaring fact that you didn’t actually feel like being alone.
You found Deacy in the lobby, leaning his elbows on the counter as he called to the person using the phone in the adjacent room.
Approaching him, you realised he was talking to— or rather, talking at— Roger, who had leaned out of the room, one hand covering the mouthpiece of the telephone.
Roger’s gaze met with yours briefly, before his eyes widened and he hissed to John something that sounded distinctly like shut up.
John saw you then, and smiled as you approached.
“Hello, Y/N. How’s it going?”
“Fine,” you responded airly, feigning a happy demeanour. “You?”
“Lovely,” said John. “Just getting Rog to make a few phone calls about the next show.”
You shook your head, puzzled. “The next show?”
“Mmyes. There was a mix-up with some gear, last time, so we thought we’d get onto it ourselves, so we know exactly what’s going on. Hands-on, you know?”
“Yeah,” you answered slowly, though in actual fact this made absolutely no sense to you, and you were sure that it made no sense to the person who had spoken it.
“Finished, Roger?” John called back to his friend, his tone more warning than inquisitive. You wondered why.
A muffled, bell-like sound announced that Roger had hung up the phone.
“Finished,” he affirmed, adjusting his round-lens sunglasses.
“Well,” said Deacy, “I’ll be off, then. See you later, Y/N.” He raised his hand in a wave, and disappeared around the corner.
You blinked at his sudden departure, then turned to Roger and asked your question before he could disappear as well.
“Rog, come see a film with me?”
Roger was pulling on an overcoat, and promptly shook his head. “Can’t. Sorry, love.”
Your fingers caught on his sleeve as he passed you, and he stopped.
“Please,” you murmured. “I know I said I didn’t want a fuss, but it’s my birthday. Come with me?”
Roger shook his head again, squeezing your hands in his. “I really can’t,” he said. At least he had the decency to look apologetic. You supposed that was something. “But I’ll see you tonight, okay?”
You tried not to sound too dejected, but truth be told, you were crushed. “Yeah, tonight.”
“Alright, then. Well, I’d better be off.” His grip gentle on your forearms, he tugged you forward and kissed your cheek, and you blushed beneath the touch of his lips to your skin, at the warmth that passed from him to you. Drawing back, he winked, let your hands fall, and was gone as well.
You went to see the film on your own.
And then you saw another. And another, just for the hell of it.
By the time you returned to the hotel, it was dark, and you found no one anywhere once more. Until you more or less crashed into John on the landing.
“Blimey, good you’re here!” he said breathlessly. “You’ve got to come quickly. Something’s wrong.”
“Wrong?” you asked. “What do you mean, wrong? Is everyone alright? Is someone hurt?”
John shook his head. “No, no. Just… Come on. You’ll want to see this.”
“See what—”
He more or less dragged you down the hall, until you reached the games room, and ground to a halt.
“In there.”
“The games room?” you said dubiously.
Deacy nodded. He stepped aside, indicating you should open the door.
Eyeing him warily, you reached for the door handle, and pushed it down. The room was dark—
And then abruptly, it was not.
Streamers burst forth, and twinkling fairy lights glinted off of the faces of your friends— Brian, Freddie, Roger, and smattering of crew— smiling from behind a table piled with all sorts of food. Food, and presents.
“Surprise!” came the cry, and you barked a laugh, half in surprise, half in disbelief at your stupidity for not having seen this coming.
“I— thank you,” you said, just as Freddie blew a party horn, to the dismay of those standing immediately beside him. You laughed again, “How did you manage all of this… with such short notice?”
Brian grinned. “It was all Roger.”
“And your bulky coat?” you asked.
“I was carrying bags of ice,” Brian admitted, to a chorus of laughter. “I was cold, okay, but I couldn’t let you see it, so I had to get away from you as quickly as possible. Sorry if that came off as rude.”
You merely laughed once again, then turned to Deacy, who stood beside you. “And, John?”
“Head of organisation,” he said. “Though it was Roger’s master plan.”
“Freddie?”
“What do you think, darling? I did all the shopping,” he swept his arm in a grand gesture, indicating the food and the presents.
“Oh, come off it, Fred,” Roger scoffed, pushing past Crystal. “Not all of the shopping.” Roger now stood before you, and, inclining his head, he handed you a rectangular package, wrapped in butcher paper and white string. “Happy birthday, sweetheart,” he said.
“Thanks, Rog,” you smiled, as you felt yourself be filled with a happiness you had long since thought gone.
“Go on. Open it.”
You looked down at the parcel in your hands, then began to tug at the string.
“We haven’t got all night,” called Freddie. “There’s cake for you as well, so hurry up!”
You glanced at Roger. He shrugged. You tore the paper from the present, and let it fall to the ground.
In your hands you held a first-edition copy of Lord of the Rings.
You gaped. “But how did you—”
“Made some phone calls,” said Roger modestly.
Without a way of putting your gratitude into words, you threw your arms around him, so forcefully that he stumbled backward, before he wrapped his arms around you as well, chuckling.
“Thank you,” you murmured, as someone started a record on the nearby deck, and the party was set into motion.
“You deserve to be fussed over,” he murmured back.
And if it was possible, you hugged him even more tightly, for once at home in this quiet, strange world, with its triumphs and its downfalls, and its in-between moments.
With its Roger moments.
Yes, that was what they were. There was no in-between when Roger was in your world.
And he knew that for as long as you would let him, he would damn well stay.

185. porky’s hero agency (1937)
release date: december 4th, 1937
series: looney tunes
director: bob clampett
starring: mel blanc (porky, emperor jones), tedd pierce (gorgon, assistant), sara berner (porky’s mom)
the final porky cartoon for 1937, and what a busy year it’s been for him! hard to believe he had an entirely different voice, look, and demeanor just 8 months prior. even then, his character still had much to explore, as we see here—in this cartoon, he’s cast as a child again. curiously, bob clampett is often credited as the one who refined his personality into the one we know today (he did give him his iconic suit and tie), but, like everything else, it was more of a collaborative exploration by all of the directors.
the title card is one of the more interesting title cards in the warner bros. repertoire—it’s a photo of a porky statuette! bob clampett would make several statues during his time at WB and distribute them to his top animators. while the statue in the credits is painted over, you can view an unpainted model here!
here, porky dreams of the wonders of ancient greece, prancing around as the mythological messenger parkykarkus. however, a gorgon has her sights set on turning him into stone, and it requires some quick thinking from porky to weasel his way out of this mess.
bobe cannon animates the expositional sequence, with porky propped up in bed, sucked into a giant book full of greek myths. his mother (offscreen) tells him it’s time to go to sleep, but porky objects, protesting that he was just at the exciting part. cannon’s animation is easy to spot with his trademark buck teeth, yet the gestures he gives porky--finger points, turning the page, etc.--give him a nice dose of youthful energy as he recaps the story, telling tales of gorgons and “great great great” greek heroes.
nevertheless, a disembodied hand turns out the light, dismissing porky’s protests. he heaves a resigned sigh, lamenting how he wishes he could be a great greek hero.
the cartoon doesn’t make any attempts to keep the dream sequence a surprise--instead, the face of the book’s cover takes up the entire screen, the pillars emblazoned on the front melting to life as we fade into ancient greece. and, as to be expected, our favorite porcine hero proudly stands in front of the building, proudly advertising “HERO FOR HIRE AGENCY -- PORKYKARKUS PROP.”
porkykarkus is a play on parkykarkus (”park your carcass”), a character on eddie cantor’s radio show “the chase & sanborn hour”. truck into porky’s services as he narrates over the specials:
“has anybody any eh-deh-deah-deah-dragons you want seh-seh-sleh-slay-slaye--rubbed out? or maybe ya have some, uh, fair meh-mai-meh-maide--honeys ya want rescued! it’s a peh-pleasure. is your daughter safe? phone eh-peh-porkykarkus at olympia 2222!”
porky’s narration, as always, is fun to listen to, and the physical advertisement has its own charm and appeal, with discounts and deals on certain rescues. not only that, but it’s a damn smart way to save money, having just the narration over the still frame. smart thinking!
conveniently, porky gets a phone call, sparking the tried and true “gear up for a big sprint but merely tinker on over to your destination” gag. as porky answers the phone, filling us in by repeating the hidden dialogue from the other line, we find out it’s the emperor--he wants one hero to go.
chuck jones’ layouts stick out quite strongly throughout this cartoon, especially in the human designs. porky’s statue of mercury is no exception--the bulbous nose and rounded body construction are all surefire trademarks of his work. porky grabs the messenger’s hat and winged shoes from the statue, never once taking a beat to stop as he hobbles along, dressing as he prepares to head out. woodblock sounds simulate the sound of his hooves clopping, but also add an extra jaunty jive to the merry score of “have you got any castles?” in the background, the cartoon’s motif. it would also be a merry melody courtesy of frank tashlin not even a year later.
with that, porky takes off, soaring in the skies like a pro with his winged shoes. if the scene wasn’t appealing enough with the overhead layouts, the animation of porky steadying himself is wonderfully smooth and fun--the cherry on top. he circles the palace where the emperor is located, swooping down to his destination. complete with airplane sound effects, of course.
“howdy, empy!” another bulbous-nosed jones character silences porky from behind his armchair. emperor jones (boy, who could that name reference, i wonder?) speaks in a ridiculously hilarious dialect, completed with a thick accent: “shh! i’m making a fireside chat with my sheeps!” his voice then slips into a rooseveltian draw as he coos “my friends, grecians and customers, this is emperor jones speaking...”
pan to the audience, which consists of a sea of smiling statues. this entire speech sequence is wonderful--not only is his terrible grammar terribly amusing, (”statistics show... what last season at this time was population in greece from 6,000 with 500 with 54 people, with 17 statues.”) but little touches such as one of the audience statues roasting marshmallows and later a hotdog over the fireplace, the emperor making his audience clap by pulling on ropes tied to their arms, and so forth make the entire charade highly amusing with lots of details to look out for. porky standing idly in the background, awkwardly fidgeting as he tries not to intrude is a great little piece of character animation as well.
the emperor gives the skinny, all while chowing down on a hotdog: a gorgon has been turning more and more people into statues, and they need a hero to steal her life-restoring needle in order to turn all of the statues back into humans again. the hero he has in mind is, of course, porky, who bashfully accepts the offer. when the emperor asks those in favor to raise their right hand, he pulls on a lever that causes all of the statues to raise their hands in unison, including a hand on a nearby clock. with a handshake, empy concludes “it’s a deal!”
one of the most impressive pieces of animation in the cartoon (i actually dedicated an entire drawing to it!) is when the emperor sends porky on his way, who waves goodbye as he flies through the air with his winged shoes. just as he tips his hat, he knocks into a pillar, which sends him tumbling upside down, but still airborne. the wings on his shoes form hands as they shake their fists in the glory of the good landing, with porky flashing a cheeky grin to the audience before spiraling lower in the air, regaining his balance, and barreling onward towards a smoldering volcano. the animation is full of life and character--though porky is consistently jolly in the B&W clampett cartoons, the grin towards the camera as he prides himself in his save is a great little touch of personality. slowly but surely, bits of character are now becoming more defined.
a gag that took me just now to recognize it--porky swoops into the heart of the volcano, where we spot the source of the black fumes pouring out the top: the gorgon statue factory. a merry score of “you’ve got something there” serves as some easy listening as we’re treated to a sign gag:
outside of the factory is a human picket fence, comprised of familiar faces: statues of bobe cannon, norm mccabe, john carey, bob clampett himself and chuck jones surround the area. directly outside of the factory is the frozen statue of a salesman with his foot in the door--the joke is not only amusing, but the pose is quite strong and readable, too. though nowhere near the dynamism of frank tashlin’s poses in the mid ‘40s, clampett’s poses in this cartoon are quite defined and exaggerated for the time period. this is especially sharp in the scenes with the emperor.
porky knocks on the door held ajar by the ceramic statue’s foot, holding out an envelope. “telegram for the guh-geh-gee-geh-gee-gor-geh--” a hand snags the envelope out of porky’s grip, causing him to mutter “aww, nuh-neh-nee-nuh-neh-neh-nut--shucks,” a phrase he echoed in clampett’s previous entry, rover’s rival.
we transition to the inside of the factory, where we see the gorgon herself, positioned in front of a camera, awaiting to take “pictures” of her models. tedd pierce voices the gorgon, whose vocal stylings are a parody of tizzie lish, bill comstock’s character on al pearce and his gang. interestingly, the cartoon before this, the woods are full of cuckoos, featured a caricature of lish as well, also voiced by pierce.
clampett and pierce’s comedic timing is sharp--not nearly as sharp as tashlin’s timing in the woods are full of cuckoos, but abundantly amusing nonetheless. the gorgon asks for a boy--”a sorta young-ish one”--and in comes a decrepit old man who can hardly hold himself up. the gorgon waits for the man to assume his position on the podium where his picture will be taken, singing a pitchy rendition of “am i in love?“, another homage to the characteristics displayed by lish’s character on the radio.
the gorgon snaps her photo, which turns the shaky old man into a stone statue at once, cheekily labeled “ANTIQUE -- $60,000 (P.S.: 000,000)” before he’s yanked off of the podium with a cane.
“now let’s try a group picture.” you know it’s a ‘30s cartoon if the three stooges come waddling in--they made their caricatured, cartoon debut in the 1934 film the miller’s daughter, notorious for being chuck jones’ first animation credit. as expected, they all beat the tar out of each other while on the podium, rendered immobile only through the power of medusa’s camera. they turn into the three wise monkeys, labeled “3 MONKEYS OF JAPAN -- MADE IN GREECE”.
norm mccabe’s animation is easy to spot in the next scene with porky, characterized by his signature double eyebrows. porky knocks on a door, parroting a favorite catchphrase from the al pearce show that frequented many a clampett cartoon: “i hope she’s eh-eh-at home, i hope, i hope, i hope, i hope, i hope...”
porky shakes the hand of the assistant, unfortunately a blackface caricature (save for the voice, who is just tedd pierce speaking in a deep, suave voice) as he greets “welcome, stranger. won’t you come in?” before porky has time to answer, he’s yanked through the iron bars of the door and placed neatly in line for the photoshoot, where he peeks through the door to see the action inside.
a pile of men form a pyramid, where the camera turns them into a literal statue of a pyramid, with some slight imperfections. “aw, shucks!” laments the gorgon. “you moved!” she approaches them with her life restoring needle, allowing the men to form into the proper position, maintaining good balance. she gets her “genuine egyptian statue”, quipping “ought to make a handy paperweight!”
the assistant informs porky that he’s next. porky backs up anxiously, echoing a short-lived catchphrase of his from the joe dougherty era: “nuh-neh-no! eh-nn-nee-no! a-a thousand times no!” the decision to make his thoughts visible (his head is slapped onto that of a piggy bank’s) is playful, and also reflects just how big of an influence comics had on bob clampett’s work: comic artists such as milt gross and george lichty have been cited by clampett as inspirations. the george lichty influence is definitely noticeable in rod scribner’s animation under bob clampett, as we’ll discover in the coming years.
in the midst of his panic, porky backs into a statue of "dick a. powello” (dick powell and apollo), causing it to break. but, rather than fuss over the mess, porky uses the opportunity to hatch an idea instead.
in comes strolling porky, concealed by powello’s upper body and a blankett hiding his hooves. the triumphant score of “he was her man” and the gorgon’s smitten woos makes the scene hilarious as is, but the blanket falling off and revealing porky’s pudgy little hooves is the icing on the comedic cake.
porky perches himself on a conveniently placed couch, where the gorgon approaches him. “pardon me, is this seat taken?” she doesn’t wait a wink before snuggling right up to him, a heart symbolizing her affections popping in the air. though clampett would play with typography at times and maintain an overarchingly jovial mood to his cartoons, it’s an odd thing to see him play with comic-like visuals in this manner, such as porky physically envisioning himself as a piggy bank or the heart from the gorgon. i wish he had done it more in this nature!
with the gorgon too close for comfort, porky uses this as an opportunity to grab the gorgon’s life-restoring needle, dangling from her neck and lying against her body. it wouldn’t be a clampett cartoon without sexual innuendos--porky reaches aimlessly around for the needle, prompting the gorgon to let out a shriek, cooing “why, mr. a POWELLo!”
she smothers the ceramic head in kisses, giving him a nice lipstick finish to boot as she pretends the statue has given her a ring. her ecstasy is hilarious and WONDERFULLY conveyed through strong, rubbery poses worth freeze-framing. picturing porky’s befuddlement is another humor within itself.
finally, porky’s disguise is revealed when the gorgon literally crushes the statue in an embrace, stone crumbling around him as he desperately slips out of her grip. as the gorgon makes threats to call the cops, reciting the WB favorite catchphrase of “calling all cars! calling all cars!”, porky makes with the needle and jabs it in various statues, warning them “uh-geh-uh-get goin’! i-i-eh-it’s the guh-geh-geh-eh-geh-gorgon!”
as the gorgon chases porky with her camera, he continues to revive a barrage of statues: the antique, the famed discus thrower (who throws himself out of the scene rather than the discus), the man from the end of the trail statue, who exits riding his horse like a merry go round (a nod to friz freleng’s sweet sioux), a woman who marches off with popeye’s forearms--note the bobe cannon statue in the back here--and a mermaid who unzips her fin and makes a run for it. the highlight of the entire montage is when porky approaches two temples (the two of them together labeled “shirley temple”) and injects the needle into them, prompting the temples to use their pillars as legs and run for the hills.
the chase reaches its climax as the gorgon pursues porky with a movie camera, turning the crank ferociously as she runs. her plan works--porky slows down, freezing in mid-air as the gorgon cries “hold it!” thus, the gorgon pins porky to the ground, who tries his hardest to fight back, but ultimately flailing around as she commands him to open his eyes.
we melt into the present, where we find porky’s mother in place of the gorgon, telling him softly to wake up. he does so, after she pries one of his eyes opens. relieved that it was all a dream, he embraces his mother, prompting a happy end and an iris out.
this cartoon has a soft spot in my heart--it was one of the first LT cartoons i saw on this whole venture. i thought i was the smartest person alive, understanding the three stooges, popeye, and shirley temple references. who knew just how much i had (and still have!) to learn! though even without my sentimental biases, this still stands as a very good cartoon.
as i mentioned previously, the poses in this are full of elasticity and energy, especially in the emperor and the gorgon. porky does a very nice job as well--little pieces of animation such as him fidgeting awkwardly while the emperor rambles on, swinging from side to side as he’s offered the job to be a hero, etc. etc. are full of charm and character. while his personality isn’t the most electric in comparison to characters like bugs and daffy, it’s the little things like these that really make porky stand out. with him, a little subtlety goes a long way, and that’s why he’s one of my favorites. he’s so reserved in comparison to such a wild cast of characters that his timidness actually shines through and sets him apart! (though, on the other hand, he can still have quite the personality, as we’ll discover!)
personally, the only gripes i have with this cartoon is the blackface caricatured assistant (which, in comparison to some cartoons we’ve seen and still have yet to see, is relatively mild, but uncomfortable nonetheless). the jokes, while corny at times, still hit, the animation is full of life and vigor, and the short as a whole has a lot of charm, whimsy, and personality. it has my seal of approval! go check it out!

Only Fools (Chapter 4)
Fic Summary: Sent to Boone County, West Virginia on an assignment, you find yourself engulfed your work. How could you possibly find time for anything else? Even if “anything else” includes the tall, kind, and handsome bartender from down the road?
Word Count: 1.5k
Read Chapter 3 here.
Read here on AO3.
Warnings: Pining.
Author’s Note: Thank y’all for being SO patient waiting for this update! I have a pretty busy weekend ahead of me, so I wanted to make sure I got something out tonight. As always, thank you for reading!
Gravel and dirt crackled underneath the tires of your car as you pulled up to the address written on the napkin you clutched in your hand. The trailer was humble but looked like it was cozy. It wasn’t a mansion, but a mansion didn’t seem like it would fit the gentle giant that you had met.
On the porch out front sat Clyde, reclining in a wooden rocking chair. He had one leg propped up on his knee with a book resting in the fold of his leg, his prosthetic pressing the spine open. In the other hand, he held a speckled tin mug, filled with coffee so hot, you could see the steam rising from it as you walked towards him. It looked like a teacup in his hand. The shatter of a stick as you stepped on it alerted him to your presence, and he set the mug down on the patio table next to him as he stood to greet you. “Mornin’ darlin’,” he called, stretching his arms to the sky. The dark blue short-sleeved shirt he donned pulled up with his shoulders, revealing a thin strip of skin just along the waist of his pants. You felt your cheeks warm as you spied a patch of dark hair just above the button of his jeans but snapped yourself out of it as the shirt fell back into its rightful place.
“Morning Clyde. You have a lovely home,” you smiled to him, eyes roaming the exterior of the house.
He rubbed the back of his neck and his pout seemed to deepen, an expression you were beginning to realize he wore regularly. “S’alright. Needs some fixin’ up,” he gestured to peeling paint spots on the door, and you waved your hand. “Nothing a coat of paint can’t fix!” He smiled sheepishly back at you. “Well,” he stopped to take a final swig of coffee. “Wanna get headed out?”
~~~
One thing that you never tired of was how alive the forest remained, no matter the season or time of day.
Birds called to each other across valleys, the open skies filled with their song. The air glinted with flecks of particulate that caught on the sunshine filtering through the trees. The foliage that shaded the forest had begun to flush deep golden hues since the first time you had trekked through the hills, and the leaves that had been shed already crunched underfoot.
You had mentally prepared yourself to have to push to keep up with the long-legged Clyde, but he had surprised you. He moseyed along, moving with purpose but without haste. He didn’t drag or dawdle, but seemed to simply be enjoying the sights and sounds of the forest, just as you were. You found yourself sneaking glances at him as you strolled next to each other. It was difficult not to, especially when his profile was so easy to melt for. You felt your cheeks warm as you watched him move. He was almost bearlike, plodding through the forest with purpose, like he owned it. You could tell that Mellie’s words rang true - he was comfortable in these woods. He knew them.
Caught up in the sight of him, your toe caught on a hunk of wood and you stumbled. Clyde’s arms were out to catch you before you even had a chance to process what was happening. A feeling akin to an electric shock shot through your body, originating from where your skin brushed against Clyde’s frame. “Sorry darlin’,” he muttered. “Shoulda warned you ‘bout that log.” As you righted your footing, you laughed, elbowing his side lightly. “Aren’t you supposed to be my guide out here?” Clyde’s ears flushed and he suddenly became hyper-focused on a single point on the forest floor, but he chuckled softly. “I’ll let you know ‘bout any other obstacles we got comin’ up.” He glanced at the foliage around you, studying the rocks and layout. “Actually,” he rubbed at the junction of his prosthetic and upper arm. “I think the area was just ‘round that boulder up there,” he gestured forward with his right hand, point to where the trail wrapped around a spire of boulders. Your heart leaped at the prospect of being so close to making actual progress on your assignment that you broke into a brisk jog, leaving Clyde startled.
As you rounded the boulder, your eyes were drawn to the area of scattered remains just off to the side of the trail.You knelt next to the tufts of hair and scattered bone shards, surveying the remains and jotting down notes in your bright yellow field journal. “It’s perfect,” you called back to Clyde. “If the cams don’t see something here, I would be floored.” A quick survey of the area was all you needed to decide on your camera locations, and you bent down to start the set up.
Ruffling through your backpack, you pushed aside the copious snacks you had brought along and pulled out your cameras, glancing up to Clyde where he watched you, leaned against a tree. You extended one to him. “Want to help me set these up?” you asked, eyebrow cocked up. He stared down at your hand for a brief moment before moving towards you, his right arm extended. He turned the machine over in his hand, running his fingers over the edges. “Now, where d’ they have to go?”
~~~
With Clyde helping you, set up was both a breeze and sheer torture. You sped through the cameras and with the added help of Clyde’s towering height, they were placed much higher than you could accomplish yourself. But each time you both grabbed for a zip tie and your fingers brushed or he moved up behind you to help you tinker with something just out of your reach and his chest brushed against you, you could feel your heart clench and your cheeks warm. You tried to keep distance between the two of you, but it was all for naught. No matter how hard you worked to quell the butterflies that fluttered around your stomach when Clyde was near you couldn’t quite shake the feeling.
The brisk hike back helped you blow off some steam and get some physical space from him. You determined that if you hugged the far edge of the trail, you could keep a good berth without straying too far. It was impossible, however, to escape talking to him. Each time he opened his mouth to speak, an indescribable feeling shot through your body, straight to your toes. It was easy, chatting with him, but you took care to not ask too much about him, for fear of falling harder. You kept it to things about the woods.
“So, do you hike these woods much?”
“Yes’m. Easy for me to come back out here, what with it being right behind my trailer,” Clyde hummed. “Good place to come think, y’know?” You nodded sympathetically. “Clyde, I know just what you mean.”
~~~
You found yourselves back at his trailer much faster than you anticipated. Coming to a halt right in front of his porch, the pair of you turned to face each other. It was quiet, each of you waiting for the other to start. With a stretch, you began, “Well-” but Clyde spoke at the same time.
“Wanna come in for a pop?” Clyde batted his eyes at you, his head slightly tilted in question. You sucked a quick breath of air in through your teeth and chewed at the inside of your cheek. His warm brown eyes bore into you, and you were a hairs breadth away from saying yes before the seemingly rational part of your mind pushed in. “No,” you sighed, “thank you though. I think it’s probably best I head back to the hotel.”
“Oh.” Clyde nudged a rock absentmindedly, eyes focused on the ground. “S’alright. I probably got some stuff I should be doing anyhow.” Your heart ached to turn him down, yet again, but you reminded yourself it was for his own sake. Not yours. “Maybe we can come back out to collect the footage together in say, a weeks time?”
Clyde huffed, still pouting and his face downturned. “Yeah, that would work alright.” A beat of silence passed. “Alright then. I’ll text you about details soon. Maybe catch you at the bar?” A small smile threatened to upturn his lips but didn’t quite come to fruition. “‘Course darlin’.” Clyde’s eyes met yours. There was something behind his eyes, an emotion you couldn’t quite place. Maybe an emotion you didn’t want to place. If you didn’t know how he was feeling, you could take some of the guilt for making him hurt in any way. “Have a good weekend Clyde,” you said, bordering on timidness. “You too darlin’.”
As your car reversed away from Clyde’s trailer, you stole another glance at him. He remained in the same place you had left him, fidgeting with the stone and turning it over between his feet. Clyde glanced up at you, and nodded once. You waved your goodbye, a sympathetic smile edging it’s way onto your face before you pulled back out onto the road. You could see that Clyde stayed rooted to the spot until he disappeared out of your rear view window. Pressure from the breath you were holding started to mount in your chest, and you released it in a long, low stream of air. “Fuck.”
Hello there, I’ve just read your headcannon of Strix trolling the Octavinelle trio. LOL. Thank you for the laughs. Since April fool’s day is coming. If you have the time, can you do a scenario where Strix trolls the other dorms with the help of her dream eaters. If you can include Malleus, it’s okay. If not, I understand. Thank you and stay safe.
Anon continued: Hi there, during my previous post, I was asking whether or not Malleus would join Strix’s trolling in trolling the other dorms since April Fools is coming. Oh! I almost forgot, can Grim and Lilia join with Strix in trolling. Thank you and have a good day or night.
Oof, doing six other dorms is a lot in one post, so I’ll keep things condensed, hence the headcanon format (sorry if you really wanted a scenario version!). I see Malleus and Lilia as types to watch for entertainment than directly take part in it. Strix left Grim out of her plans since he himself is chaotic already. It was time for her to assume the lead and let it out, at least for the day.
It’s come to my attention that I like doing headcanons of Strix and her dream eaters, so I plan on doing more headcanons/scenarios involving the pesky but cute spirits. They don’t stop here so look forward to it! Happy April Fool’s~
Heartslabyul
Heartslabyul could handle strange things more so than any other dorms. Just not anything against the crimson tyrant’s 810 rules.
“WHO PAINTED THE ROSE MAZE BLUE?!!!”
Riddle’s face fumes as red as his hair. Not a single trace of red is found! There was only blue as far as the eye can see.
Deuce, Trey, and Cater were rendered speechless by the sight. Just...wow. They’re not even dreading the culprit’s fate at Riddle’s mercy; instead they’re impressed with the feat. Such commitment!
Meanwhile Ace was resisting from bursting in a fit of laughter. That madwoman actually did it! She even casually remarked about doing such a feat but no one had paid her words seriously. Bravo! Bra-freaking-vo!
Ah, speaking of...
“You have a lot of nerve showing your face, Strix! You must be begging for your head to roll! This is defying the Queen of Hearts herself! Repaint every single rose -by yourself- until all is red!”
“Sheesh, let’s not get a rage stroke. You’re still so young...” Strix nonchalantly yawns. “I wanted to surprise you so I spent the whole night painting every rose blue. Of course, I had a helping hand with me.”
She vaguely gestured to the dream spirit hiding behind her leg. Me Me Bunny’s ears act as another pair of hands, and this cutie is quite dextrous; it also knows “bun fu”.
“Oh you surprised me all right. [Surprise] is only an understatement!”
A sigh. “You don’t get it, Riddle. Think of it this way. Blue makes the red stand out. Then the only red rose we’ll see...is you, my queen.”
She leans forward to slip a strand of Riddle’s velvet red locks between her fingers and graze her lips on them. Her half-lidded bright blue eyes gaze into his steel gray pair. Perhaps she was still under the drowsy spell to comprehend what she was doing, though a part of her was knowingly teasing.
Riddle stared wide-eyed. His cheeks flushed in a different meaning this time.
She pulls back to give space and turns the other way.
“Plus, contrary to your words, I think you actually like my surprise. It’s certainly not boring. And it’ll only be for today.”
Strix flashed a lazy grin his way.
“Happy April Fool’s~”
Savanaclaw
Strix’s dream eaters are quirky, adorable, and colorful spirits. Jack often questions their capabilities. What can little prey do to the brawny hotheads of Savanaclaw?
A lot.
One day Strix was on patrol. Jack had been keeping an eye as she works part-time as the “cleaner” of Savanaclaw. Just how much power can she draw from these familiars? It was a test for Strix to see if she can meet the standards of a respectable magician in this academy.
Meanwhile Ruggie anticipates something interesting will happen. Strix’s dream eaters are an enigmatic force to reckon with. He himself certainly doesn’t plan on confronting them since that’s not what he signed up for as vice dorm leader.
The hyena snickered his trademark laugh. What mayhem will the prefect student do?
Strix had to break up a fight for the nth time this week. Things happened, and one of the students said something that forced Strix to deal her hand.
Instead of commanding her eagle and hawk to attack, she summoned a single chubby cat/dog hybrid with stubby legs. It doesn’t look like a clever beast.
Aww, look at it roll around and paw at air for affection while its pink tongue stuck out. They’re going to die of cuteness.
Strix blankly stared ahead. “Meow Wow... Balloon.”
Said spirit stood on all four legs and stopped wagging. Every onlooker watched as it inflated in size. It continued to grow and grow until no one could see the light of day. It was then everyone thought it’d be wise to run from immediate vicinity.
However it was too late when Meow Wow deflated in puffy smoke and sparkles, drowning its victims along with the plume of clouds.
Jack and Ruggie watched from a platform above where they could see the area in action.
“Magic familiar tamers have unique strengths...” Was what Jack concluded. A hawk and eagle’s cries pierce the sky.
Ruggie rubbed the back of his head. “Let’s be real; in this world, birds are a real hassle. As long as you don’t make an enemy of them...”
Strix was already gone by the time Meow Wow inflated. Her eagle dream spirit now willingly massive in size acted as her glider and transporter. Strix’s body dangled as she clung tightly to her Eaglider’s talons until it settled her on the balcony of a dorm room. Eaglider flew to patrol elsewhere alongside Halbird, the hawk dream eater.
Sitting on a chair was Leona playing with a chess piece in his hand. A chessboard was already set up on the table, the black side facing him.
“Enjoying your job, aren’t you.”
Strix allowed a sheepish smirk. She’s not exactly proud to engage in cleaning up people’s messes, but there’s the thrill she finds in it. “To be honest, yeah. I think I might be a sadist at this point...” She mumbled under her breath and continued, “Sorry for the wait. Let’s start.”
Scarabia
“Jamil, a rainbow fish is swimming through the skies!”
“Nonsense. There are no aquatic animals in Scarabia. You probably just saw a magic carpet.”
“Then how come no one told me magic carpets can shoot lasers??”
Before Jamil can decipher whatever the hell Kalim meant by that, the sapphire blue skies turned murky. No, that wasn’t the work of clouds.
To everyone’s bewilderment, they bared witness to a school of colorful fish roaming freely through the air and above the whole dormitory aimlessly.
Lasers shoot from their mouths and make contact with the other to cause sparks to erupt in colorful fireworks. So that’s the laser part...
Kalim’s eyes sparkled. “It’s like the aquariums at Octavinelle, but airborne! *gasp* I just got a great idea for the next party!”
“For the nth time Kalim no more parties this month!”
*whistle* “Fin Fatale’s actually enjoying this. Who’d knew?”
The two boys turn to see Strix approaching them causally.
Strix grinned. “Bet you don’t see this in Scarabia often.”
Pomefiore
Pomefiore students have a tendency to look into a mirror at almost any given opportunity. They recognize every detail of their their highly bestowed beauty, lest they would fail to maintain perfection.
Imagine their surprise when a carbon copy of themselves suddenly replaces their reflection, except in a horrendous eye-burning color palette that screams “clown”
Turns out the copy really is a clown creature with a large tongue. Jestabocky simply loves to prank people at the expense of their reactions, and it took a liking to Pomefiore students.
Strix giggled in amusement, much to Vil’s chagrin. Standing next to the man was a Vil duplicate, except in that hideous orange carrot and lemon yellow palette that made his eyes want to bleed. Of course no one could ever compare to the original, especially a circus mimic at that.
Rook was examining his blood red and ice blue carbon copy. What a refreshing change of pace! “Your dream eaters never cease to amaze, little owl.” “Don’t hunt them for sport though!”
Epel was staring at his clone awkwardly. Cotton candy hair and yellow eyes are an odd combination. And would it stop grinning uncharacteristically like that? It’s freaky.
Strix looks beside her. Teal green hair, violet eyes, and an orange to yellow uniform color scheme. It’s horrendous, but that’s where the fun lies. Her dream eaters don’t know the meaning of color coordination.
Ignihyde
Strix thinks a surprise here and there in the shut-in dorm leader’s life ought to keep him on his toes. She knows how much Ortho wants him to come out his room, and so she’ll deliver just that.
Idia recieved an alert message as he was browsing the net. A window pops up displaying the security camera footage across the entire Ignihyde dorm.
To his horror, rainbows invaded the cameras everywhere he looked. In each one there was a massive bipedal colorful panda doing something to the students behind the screen. One was lifting a student to the air, another swinging and cradling, and others generally giving bear hugs to any soul -dead or living- that enter their vision.
Though the pandas are harmless and students are unharmed (some seem to enjoy it while others are bewildered in shock), Idia was quaking in his chair. If he walks out the room he’ll be crushed by the pandas’ mercy! (And by rainbows and cuteness!)
He zoomed in one of the footages. A Kooma Panda held a sign directly to the camera.
[YOU’RE NEXT]
This is nightmare fuel! Nightmares, he tells you!
Just as he spun around to hide and cower in the safety of his blankets, he had failed to notice the looming shadow over his flaming head prior to this very moment.
There was the same panda. In his bedroom. Staring right into his soul.
It smiled. (I reread this part and lowkey I realized I was writing a FNaF fanfic for a moment wut)
Idia wheezed. How did it get here?! Was it capable of teleporting?!
The shut-in had never ran for the door to the outside world with such eagerness in his life up to now. He slammed the door open and was about to hit the breeze when suddenly he recognized Strix standing right in front of him.
He practically tackled the poor girl (oof). Just when he dreads the contact with the floor, he felt something bouncy push them off. And then the same bouncing source came from behind. Now he’s squeezed between something.
The world spun in his eyes. Light-hearted laughter snapped him out of his trance. His soul actually came close to leaving him the moment Strix’s face registered in his vision. So close!
Two Kooma Pandas were hugging and nuzzling the two in a human-dream eater sandwich. Awww.
From the sidelines, Ortho watched in awe. That’s one way to bring his big bro out of the room. He eagerly joins in the hug fest with Strix and an all-too drained Idia.
Strix giggled and wrapped her arms around Idia and the panda behind him. She was clearly enjoying this. “Happy April Fools~”
Diasomnia
First things first: Strix can’t fool two all mighty and powerful faeries. Instead, she’ll entertain them like she and her dream eaters have always done. After all, boredom is their kind’s biggest enemy.
One day, Diasomnia students were walking down the halls when they notice a colorful bat creature hanging upside down from the ceiling, innocently watching people pass by.
There was one Komory Bat. The next door over there are two. The door after that door appeared three. In front of the dorm gate there may or may not be a bat perched to greet students in and out.
In the library, students are surprised when they’re greeted by the librarian aid...who was working upside down and levitating with gravity magic.
Strix casually acts as though it was natural. When she had to move away from the counter she continued walking upside down on the ceiling. If the ceiling was too high she’d float over just above people’s heads, and address when needed.
Strix likes to mess with Sebek by doing a “handstand” on his broad shoulders while talking to Silver. Sebek would shoo her off and when he does, Strix still pesters him by floating with a mocking haughtiness behind the way she rocks back and forth while grinning mischievously. The sight is hilarious, much to Sebek’s chagrin.
She can see why Lilia likes doing this. By the end of the day though, that’s enough walking on ceilings for the year.
Strix greets Malleus at eye level. “How’d you like it? Not boring, right?”
The horned fae chuckled. The glimmer of accomplishment in her stunning blue eyes amuses him the most. Like a child who proudly boasts their little achievements to appeal to their parents. It was adorable. “Certainly.”
NORMAN FUCKING ROCKWELL (2019)
norman fucking rockwell
You fucked me so good that I almost said, "I love you"
Cause you're just a man, It's just what you do
You talk to the walls when the party gets bored of you
Why wait for the best when I could have you?
You make me blue
mariners apartment complex
You took my sadness out of context
I ain't no candle in the wind
I'm the board, the lightning, the thunder
[i’m the] Kind of girl who's gonna make you wonder who you are and who you've been
Maybe I could save you from your sins
Kiss the sky and whisper to Jesus
You lose your way, just take my hand /You're lost at sea, then I'll command your boat to me again / Don't look too far, right where you are, that's where I am
They mistook my kindness for weakness
Catch a wave and take in the sweetness / Think about it, the darkness, the deepness
Even in the dark I feel your resistance
venice bitch
The summer fades away / Nothing gold can stay
Paint me happy and blue
If you weren't mine, I'd be jealous of your love
fuck it i love you
I like to see everything in neon
Maybe the way that I'm living is killing me
I moved to California, but it's just a state of mind / It turns out everywhere you go, you take yourself
Dream a little dream of me, make me into something sweet
Fuck it, I love you / I really do
Wish that you would hold me or just say that you were mine
If I wasn't so fucked up, I think I'd fuck you all the time
California dreamin', I got my money on my mind
Drugs is in my veins, running out of time
doin’ time
Summertime, and the livin's easy
I love her so bad, but she treats me like shit
Take this veil from off my eyes
My burning sun will, some day, rise
Ornery, scandalous and evil, most definitely
I'd like to hold her head underwater
love song
We go so fast, we don't move
I'm a star and I'm burnin' through you
Be my once in a lifetime
[I] would like to think that you would stick around
You know that I'd just die to make you proud
Touch me anywhere 'cause I'm your baby
I believe that you see me for who I am
Is it safe to just be who we are?
cinnamon girl
You try to push me out but I just find my way back in
There's things I wanna say to you / But I'll just let you live
If you hold me without hurting me, you'll be the first who ever did
Kerosene in my hands, you make me mad, I'm fire again
how to disappear
The waves came in over my head
All of the guys tell me lies, but you don't
This is how to disappear
Cuts on his face 'cause he fought too hard
He's in over his head
He moves mountains and pounds them to ground again
I think about those years
I'm always going to be right here / No one's going anywhere
california
You don't ever have to be stronger than you really are
I wanted to reach out, but I never said a thing / I wanted to call you, but I didn't say a thing
This is crazy love, I'll catch you on the flip side
We'll do whatever you want, travel wherever how far
You're scared to win, scared to lose
Changing like the weather, oh, that's so like you
the next best american record
My baby used to dance underneath my architecture
We gave all we had
'Cause we were just that good / It was just that good
Whatever's on tonight, I just wanna party with you
You made me feel like there's something that I never knew I wanted
We lost track of space / We lost track of time
It's you, all the roads lead to you
I see you for who you really are
the greatest
I miss dancin' with you
Those nights were on fire / We couldn't get higher
We didn't know that we had it all
But nobody warns you before the fall
Don't leave, I just need a wake up call
I guess I'm signin' off after all
I want shit to feel just like it used to
I guess that I'm burned out after all
"Life on Mars" ain't just a song
bartender
Sometimes girls just want to have fun
The poetry inside of me is warm like a gun
I'm just tryna keep my love alive
Hold me all night
Our love's alive
Baby remember, I'm not drinking wine
Our love's sweet enough on the vine
Wearing white for their tea parties
Meditating in the garden
I love the little games that we play
When at last the day is done / I grab my keys
They don't yet know where I reside
60 miles from the last place I hide
happiness is a butterfly
Do you want me or do you not?
I heard one thing, now I'm hearing another
Happiness is a butterfly / Try to catch it like every night
It escapes from my hands into moonlight
Every day is a lullaby
If he's a serial killer, then / what's the worst that could happen to a girl who's already hurt
I'm already hurt
I guess I'm cursed
Looking into his eyes, I think he's already hurt
Don't be a jerk, don't call me a taxi
Sitting in your sweatshirt, crying in the backseat
I was one thing, now I'm being another
I lose myself in the music
hope is a dangerous thing for a woman like me to have - but i have it
Smiling for miles in pink dresses and high heels on white yachts
I've been tearing around in my fucking nightgown
Writing in blood on my walls
The ink in my pen don't work in my notepad
Don't ask if I'm happy / You know that I'm not
At best, I can say I'm not sad
Hope is a dangerous thing for a woman like me to have
Church basement romances
Calling from beyond the grave
Like a goddamn near sociopath
She couldn't care less, and I never cared more
There's no more to say about that
There's a new revolution / A loud evolution
Born of confusion and quiet collusion
A modern day woman with a weak constitution
I've got monsters still under my bed that I could never fight off
LUST FOR LIFE (2017)
love
Look at you kids with your vintage music
You're part of the past, but now you're the future
Signals crossing can get confusing
You get all dressed up to go nowhere in particular
Doesn't matter 'cause it's enough to be young and in love
The world is yours and you can't refuse it
Seen so much, you could get the blues but that don't mean that you should abuse it
It doesn't matter if I'm not enough / For the future or the things to come
lust for life
In these stolen moments, the world is mine
Keepin' me hot like July
We're the masters of our own fate
A lust for life keeps us alive
My boyfriend's back and he's cooler than ever
There's no more night, blue skies forever
They say only the good die young
There's no stopping now, green lights forever
13 beaches
I don't belong in the world / But that's what it is
Something separates me from other people
Everywhere I turn / There's something blocking my escape
It took thirteen beaches to find one empty
I'm camera ready almost all the time
But I still get lonely
Let your memory dance in the ballroom of my mind
It hurts to love you / But I still love you
I still love you, it's just the way I feel
I've been dying for something real
Finally I'm fine
In the white sunshine
You can still find me if you ask nicely
Underneath the pines with the daisies, feeling hazy
cherry
Real love, it's like feeling no fear / When you're standing in the face of danger
It's like heaven taking the place of something evil
I fall to pieces when I'm with you
And all of my peaches are ruined
It's like smiling when the firing squad's against you / And you just stay lined up
My rose garden dreams, set on fire by fiends
And all my black beaches are ruined
white mustang
Packing all my things for the summer
Lying on my bed it's a bummer / 'Cause I didn't call when I got your number
But I liked you a lot
Slippin' on my dress in soft filters
Everybody said you're a killer, but I couldn't stop the way I was feeling
Caught up in my dreams and forgetting
I've been acting like armageddon ['cause you] Held me in your arms just a little too tight
Summer's meant for loving and leaving
I was such a fool for believing / that you could change all the ways you've been living
You're gonna hit me like lightening
summer bummer
It's never too late to be who you wanna be
Leave if you wanna leave / Stay if you wanna stay
I got a feeling in my bones / Can't get you out of my veins
You can't escape my affection
Wrap you up in my daisy chains
Let's skip the games, let's quit the playin'
Between you and me I'm usually single
White lies and black beaches
Miles in between us
We traveled for weeks, just to escape your demons
groupie love
You're in the bar, playing guitar / You're in the club, living it up
It's so sweet, swingin' to the beat
I know that you're doing it all for me
Every time you look up I know what you're thinking of
Time after time, writing my lines
This is my life, you by my side
Key lime and perfume and festivals
Taking our dreams, turning them to things
It's like magic, babe, isn't life wonderful?
in my feelings
I'm smoking while I'm runnin' on my treadmill
I'm cutting up roses, could it be that I fell for another loser
I'm crying while I'm cummin' / Sobbin' in my cup of coffee
Get that cigarette smoke out of my face
You've been wasting my time
Talk that talk, well now they all know your name
There's no coming back from the place that you came
You got me in my feelings
Talking in my sleep again
Who's tougher than this bitch
I'm feeling all my fucking feelings
I'm laughing as I'm taking my prisoners
In the smoke they can hear me coming
If you were me, and I was you / I'd get out of my way
Got me feeling so blue make a mess of the love
coachella - woodstock in my mind
For a minute it was Woodstock in my mind
They put out the warning tensions were rising over country lines
I turned off the music tried to sit and use it
All of the love that I saw that night
What about all these children and what about all their parents
What about about all their crowns they wear
Wrapped up like garland roses 'round their little heads
I'd trade it all for a stairway to heaven
I'd trade the fame and the fortune and the legend
Critics can be so mean sometimes
Doesn't take a genius to know what you've got going and to
Got a million things I wanna say
What is it all for? Will it be okay
god bless america - and all the beautiful women in it
Take me as I am
Only you can save me tonight
There's nowhere to run, nowhere to hide
You let me in, don't leave me out or leave me dry
Even when I'm alone i’m not lonely
I hear the sweetest melodies on the fire escapes of the city
God bless America, and all the beautiful women in it
Take me as I am don't see me for what I'm not
With you I've got nothing to lose
when you talk that talk with those lips I'm most certain in hell
when the world was at war we kept dancing
Don't forget your pearls and all of your horses
As you make your way across the pond, don't forget your curls
Memorize them in a little song
Shake it up, throw your hands up and get loose
Is it the end of an era?
It's only the beginning
If we hold on to hope we'll have a happy ending
If you find you're in a foreign land don't make too much noise
Don't try to be funny / Other people may not understand
beautiful people beautiful problems
Blue is the color of the planet from the view above
Long live our reign, long live our love
Green is the planet from the eyes of a turtle dove / 'Til it runs red, runs red with blood
We get so tired and we complain 'bout how it's hard to live
But we're just beautiful people with beautiful problems
Warm is the body of the girl from the land he loves
My heart is soft, my past is rough
Something close to like a sugar rush
But is it wasted love? / It's not wasted love
But we gotta try every day and night
tomorrow never came
Hey, what you doing?
Baby don't ask me why
On that side of paradise
If I had my way you'd would always stay
I'll be your tiny dancer, honey
I waited for you / In the spot you said to wait
In the city, on a park bench in the middle of the pouring rain
I just wanted things to be the same / You said to meet me out there tomorrow but tomorrow never came
I wish we had stayed home
I could put on the radio to our favourite song
heroin
The rumbling from distant shores sends me to sleep
The facts of life can sometimes make it hard to dream
Grab me by the ribbons in my hair
Life rocked me, ultra-softly like the heavy metal that you wear
Flying to the moon again / Dreaming about heroin
Probably gave you everything And took your life away
I put you on an aeroplane destined for a foreign land
My hopes that you come back again / And tell me everything's Okay
I want to leave, I'll probably stay another year / It's hard to live when absolutely nothing's clear
Something 'bout this weather made these kids go crazy / Something 'bout this sun has made these kids get scary
I'll be lying if I said I wasn't sick of it
Taking all my medicine to take my thoughts away
I hope that I'd come back one day
Don't know what it is that makes my head get crazy
change
There's something in the wind I can feel it blowing in
Lately I've been thinking it's just someone else's job to care
Who am I to sympathize when no one gave a damn?
Change is a powerful thing people are powerful beings
Maybe by the time this song is done I'll be able to be honest, capable
Holding you in my arms without letting you fall / When I don't feel beautiful
Maybe it's enough to just be where we are because
Everytime that we run we don't know what it's from
There's something in the water I can taste it turning sour / It's bitter, I'm coughing but now it's in my blood
get free
Finally, I'm crossing the threshold / From the ordinary world to the reveal of my heart
Take the dead out of the sea and the darkness from the arts
I'm doing it for all of us
All my birds of paradise who never got to fly at night
It feels like I've got a war in my mind, I want to get off but I keep riding the ride
I never really notice that I had to decide to play someone's game or to live my own life and now I do
Out of the black, Into to the blue
Gone is the burden of the crawling way of being
We're not in your right mind
There's no more chasing rainbows / Their arches are illusions
You try to touch them, there's nothing to hold on to
HONEYMOON (2015)
honeymoon
Don't go 'cause truly there's nobody for you but me
We could cruise to the blues
The history of violence that surrounds you
There's nothing to lose now that I've found you
There are violets in your eyes / There are guns that blaze around you / There are roses in between my thighs
music to watch boys to
Singing soft grunge just to soak up the noise
I've been sent to destroy
I know what only the girls know
Lies can buy you eternity
terrence loves you
I don't matter to anyone
I lost myself when I lost you
I won't change you for anything
Isn't strange that you're not here with me
I know the light's on in the television
god knows i tried
Sometimes I wake up in the morning, To red, blue, and yellow skies / It's so crazy I could drink it like tequila sunrise
Dance around like I'm insane
I feel free when I see no one, and nobody knows my name
God knows I live / God knows I died / God knows I begged, borrowed and cried /God knows I loved / God know I lied /God knows I lost / God gave me life / And God knows I tried
Sometimes I wake up in the morning, to red, blue and yellow lights
On Monday they destroyed me, but by Friday I'm revived
I've got nothing much to live for
Light up my life
high by the beach
Look at you looking at me
I know you know how I feel
Loving you is hard, being here is harder
I don't wanna do this anymore, it's so surreal
I can't survive if this is all that's real
All I wanna do is get high by the beach
The truth is I never bought into your bullshit
You could be a bad motherfucker / But that don't make you a man
Now you're just another one of my problems / Because you got out of hand
We won't survive we're sinking into the sand
Don't need your money to get me what I want, i’ll do it on my own
Everyone can start again
Not through love but through revenge
Through the fire, we're born again
Peace by vengeance brings the end
freak
Flames so hot that they turn blue
Palms reflecting in your eyes, like an endless summer
That's the way I feel for you
If time stood still I'd take this moment, make it last forever
Screw your anonymity
Loving me is all you need to feel
Talk till we both turn blue
Life makes sense when I'm with you
Looking back, my past, it all seems stranger than a stranger
It's like I told you, If you stay, I'll stay
art deco
You're not mean, you just want to be seen
Want to be wild
A little party never hurt no one
You want in but you just can't win
Shining like gun metal, cold and unsure
When they all say hello you try to ignore them
You put your life out on the line
religion
Everything is fine now
Let's sleep in the dark's day
All our minds made up now, all our beds are made
No one's out of time, no chips fall wherever they may
Leave it all behind, let the ocean wash it away
It never was about the money or the drugs / It never was about the party or the clubs
'Cause you're my religion, you're how I'm living
When I'm down on my knees, you're how I pray
Hallelujah, I need your love
Everything is bright now no more cloudy days
Even when the storms come, in the eye we'll stay
No need to survive now, all we do is play
salvatore
Everything looks better from above my king
Like aqua marine, ocean's blue
All the lights are sparkling for you it seems
I adore you, can't you see, you're meant for me?
Summer's hot but I've been cold without you
the blackest day
I don't really wanna break up
It's not easy for me to talk about a half-life in lost dreams
And not simple, it's trigonometry
It's hard to express I can't explain
Ever since my baby went away it's been the blackest day
Because I'm going deeper and deeper, getting darker and darker
don't wanna talk about the things to come
Looking for love in all the wrong places
I got you where I want you
I'm falling for forever
I'm playing head games with you
24
There's only 24 hours in a day, and half as many ways for you to lie to me
Half of those, you lay awake with thoughts of murder and carnage
If you lie down with dogs, then you'll get fleas
Be careful of the company you keep
Lie like you lie
Love like you love
There's only 24 hours in a day and half of those you lay between the sheets with me
Give me your heat
Give me your diamonds
And my crooked lust
You count to three while they're all dying
You're hard to reach
You're cold to touch
swan song
Why work so hard when you could just be free?
You got your moment now, you got your legacy
Let's leave the world for the ones who change everything
Nothing could stop the two of us
Let's just get lost, that's what we want
With just one wave it goes away
Dive in, dive deep in dark blue suede
Rushing up from the water where the ice meets
And you've been gone so long, you missed everything
Say good night to the life in the world we live
don’t let me be misunderstood
Don't you know no one alive can always be an angel?
When everything goes wrong, you see some bad
But I'm just a soul whose intentions are good
Oh Lord, please don't let me be misunderstood
Sometimes again it seems that all I have is worry
I want you to know I never meant to take it out on you
Life has its problems and I get more than my share
Baby, I'm just human
Don't you know I have faults like anyone?
ULTRAVIOLENCE (2014)
cruel world
Share my body and my mind with you
There's not anymore I can do
And I like my candy and your women
I'm finally happy now that you're gone
Because you're young, you're wild, you're free
You're dancing circles around me
You're fucking crazy
I love your women and all of your heroin
Everybody knows that I'm a mess
ultraviolence
I was filled with poison but blessed with beauty and rage
He hit me and it felt like a kiss
This is ultraviolence
I can hear sirens
He used to call me poison, like I was poison ivy
I could've died right then
He hurt me but it felt like true love
[Jim] taught me that loving him was never enough
Crying tears of gold, like lemonade
shades of cool
My baby lives in shades of blue
And when he calls he calls for me, not for you
I can't fix him, can't make him better
I can't do nothing about his strange weather
I can't break through your world
Your heart is unbreakable
He prays for love, he prays for peace
brooklyn baby
They say I'm too young to love you
I don't know what I need
They think I don't understand
I think I'm too cool to know ya
You say I'm like the ice I freeze
You say I'm too dumb to see
They judge me like a picture book, by the colors, like they forgot to read
I think we're like fire and water / I think we're like the wind and sea
If you don't like it you can beat it
You never liked the way I said it
If you don't get it, then forget it so I don't have to fucking explain it
I get high on hydroponic weed
Yeah my boyfriend's pretty cool but he's not as cool as me
west coast
That's why I'm leaving you for the music
I push it hard you pull away
I'm feeling hotter than fire
There's no one else that brings me higher than higher
You say you miss me and I wanna say I miss you so much but something keeps me really quiet
sad girl
It might not appeal to fools like you
He's got the fire and he walks with fame
Being a bad bitch on the side
We've been around when he gets high
pretty when you cry
All the pretty stars shine for you
Am I the girl that you dream of?
You make me feel like your whole world
I'll wait for you, babe, that's all I do
I'm pretty when I cry
All those special times I spent with you, my love, they don't mean shit compared to all your drugs
Like my memories, I don't need that
Don't say you need me when you're leaving
money power glory
How are we supposed to get there
That's not what this bitch wants
I want money, power and glory
I wanna take you for all that you got
The sun also rises on those who fail to call
My life, it comprises of losses and wins and fails and falls
fucked my way up to the top
Lay me down tonight in my linen and curls
I fucked my way up to the top
This is my show
I'm a dragon, you're a whore
Mimicking me is a fucking bore to me
Lay me down tonight in my diamonds and pearls
Tell me songs at night about your favorite girl
Need you baby, like I breathe you
old money
Where have you been? Where did you go?
Those summer nights seem long ago
But if you send for me, you know I'll come / And if you call for me, you know I'll run
Sunsets, small town, I'm out of time
Will you still love me when I shine from words but not from beauty
My father's love was always strong / My mother's glamour lives on and on
Yet still inside, I felt alone for reasons unknown to me
black beauty
I paint my nails black / I dye my hair a darker shade of brown
I paint the sky black
It suits the mood of your soul
Nothing, my sparrow blue
Life is beautiful but you don't have a clue It don't make sense to you
Paint the house black
My wedding dress black leather, too
You have no room for light
Love is lost on you
I keep my lips red, they seem like cherries in the spring
Darling, you can't let everything seem so dark blue
guns and roses
Heavy metal love of mine
I should have learned to let you stay
You didn't want me all the time but you were worth it anyway
You were so much better than the rest of them
Out of all the others you were the honest man
I should have learned to let you play
I wasn't the marrying kind I should have done it anyway
Back to the promised land
I can feel it coming in the air tonight
I can see you bathing in the summer light
You got game boy
florida kilos
They're special, just for you
Loving you is free
I like it down way low
Prison isn't nothing to me, if you'll be by my side
Sun in my mouth and gold hoops
We could get high in Miami
PARADISE (2012)
ride
I've been out on that open road
Singing blues has been getting old
You can be my full time, baby, Hot or cold
Don't break me down
I've been travelin' too long, I've been trying too hard
I hear the birds on the summer breeze, I drive fast / I am alone in the night
Been tryin' hard not to get into trouble, but I've got a war in my mind
So, I just ride
Dying young and I'm playing hard
Drink all day and we talk 'til dark / That's the way the road doves do it, ride 'til dark
I'm tired of feeling like I'm fucking crazy / I'm tired of driving 'till I see stars in my eyes
I look up to hear myself saying, baby
american
Play house, put my favorite record on
Flirting with the girls like you're so pretty
You make me crazy, you make me wild
Be young, be dope be proud
Drive fast, I can almost taste it now
I don't even have to fake it now
You're way ahead of the trend
Honey put on that party dress
I don't really want the rest, only you can take me there
I don't even know what I'm saying but I'm praying for you
cola
My pussy tastes like Pepsi Cola / My eyes are wide like cherry pies
I got sweet taste for men who're older /It's always been so it's no surprise
We can escape to the great sunshine
I know your wife and she wouldn't mind
I wear my diamonds on skid row
I pledge allegiance to my dad, for teaching me everything he knows
Don't treat me rough, treat me really nice
body electric
Jesus is my bestest friend
We don't need nobody, 'cause we got each other / Or at least I pretend
We get down every Friday night
Mary prays the rosary for my broken mind
I sing the body electric / I’m on fire
My clothes still smell like you and all the photographs say you're still young
I pretend I'm not hurt and go about the world like I'm havin' fun
blue velvet
She wore blue velvet / Bluer than velvet was the night
Softer than satin was the light From the stars
Warmer than may her tender sighs
Ours a love I held tightly
Feeling the rapture grow like a flame burning brightly
But when she left, gone was the glow
I still can see blue velvet through my tears
gods & monsters
In the land of gods and monsters
I was an angel living in the garden of evil
Screwed up, scared, doing anything that I needed
Shining like a fiery beacon
You got that medicine I need / Fame, liquor, love, give it to me slowly
Put your hands on my waist, do it softly
Me and God, we don't get along
No one's gonna take my soul away
Headed towards a fucked up holiday
Fuck yeah give it to me, this is heaven, what I truly want
It's innocence lost
I was an angel, lookin' to get fucked hard
Life imitates art
Dope, shoot it up straight to the heart please
I don't really wanna know what's good for me
God's dead, I said 'baby that's alright with me'
When you talk it's like a movie and you're making me crazy
If I get a little prettier, can I be your baby?
You tell me life isn't that hard
yayo
I like the snake on your tattoo
I like the Ivy and the Ink blue
You have to take me right now / From this dark trailer park
Put me onto your black motorcycle
Fifties baby doll dress for my 'I do"
It only takes two hours to Nevada
I wear your sparkle
You call me your mama, Let me put on a show for you daddy
Let me put on a show
Need you like a drug
Hello Heaven / You are a tunnel lined with yellow lights
bel air
Gargoyles standing at the front of your gate
Trying to tell me to wait, but I can't wait to see you
So I run, like I'm mad, to heaven's door / I don't wanna be bad
I won't cheat you no more
I've been waiting to meet you / Darling I'm waiting to greet you
The violentest kind of love anywhere out there
Mon amour, sweet child of mine, You're divine
Didn't anyone ever tell you / It's okay to shine?
Don't be ashamed / Walk in the way of my soft resurrection
I know your name
Lead me to war with your brilliant direction
Grenadine sunshine, and it fades sublime
BORN TO DIE (2012)
born to die
Feet don't fail me now, take me to your finish line
My heart it breaks every step that I take
I'm hoping that the gates, they'll tell me that you're mine
Walking through the city streets / Is it by mistake or design?
I feel so alone on a Friday night /Can you make it feel like home if I tell you you're mine?
Don't make me sad, don't make me cry
Sometimes love is not enough and the road gets tough, I don't know why
Keep making me laugh / Let's go get high
The road is long, we carry on / Try to have fun in the meantime
Come take a walk on the wild side
Let me kiss you hard in the pouring rain
You like your girls insane
Choose your last words, this is the last time
Lost but now I am found / I can see but once I was blind
I was so confused as a little child
Tried to take what I could get / Scared that I couldn't find All the answers
off to the races
I can't deny the way he holds my hand and he grabs me / He has me by my heart
He loves me with every beat of his cocaine heart
Swimming pool Glimmering darling / White bikini off with my red nail polish
Watch me in the swimming pool bright blue ripples
Light of my life, fire in my loins / Be a good baby, do what I want
Gimme them gold coins, gimme them coins
Facing time again at Riker's Island and I won't get out / Because I'm crazy, baby
I need you to come here and save me
I'm your little scarlet, starlet, singing in the garden / Kiss me on my open mouth, ready for you
But he got a soul as sweet as blood red jam
And he shows me, he knows me, every inch of my tar black soul
He doesn't mind I have a flat broke down life / In fact he says he thinks it's what he might like about me
Slipping on my red dress, putting on my make up / Glass film, perfume, cognac, lilac fumes
Says it feels like heaven to him
I'm gonna stay and pray with him till the end
I trust in the decision of the law, to watch over us
I'm not afraid to say that I'd die without him / Who else is gonna put up with me this way?
I need you, I breathe you, I'll never leave you
They would rue the day, I was alone without you
You're lying with your gold chain on, cigar hanging from your lips
blue jeans
Walked into the room you know you made my eyes burn
But you fit me better than my favorite sweater
That love is mean, and love hurts
I still remember that day we met in December
I will love you 'til the end of time / I would wait a million years
Promise you'll remember that you're mine
Baby can you see through the tears?
When you walked out that door, a piece of me died
I just want it like before
video games
Pull up in your fast car whistling my name
It's you, it's you, it's all for you
I heard that you like the bad girls honey, is that true?
Swinging with the old stars, living for the fame
Kissing in the blue dark
He holds me in his big arms / Drunk and I am seeing stars
diet mountain dew
You're no good for me but baby, I want you
Do you think we'll be in love forever?
Baby, put on heart shaped sunglasses, 'Cause we gonna take a ride
I'm not gonna listen to what the past says
I've been waiting up all night
Take another drag, turn me to ashes
Maybe I like this roller coaster, maybe it keeps me high
Can we hit it now low down and gritty
national anthem
Money is the anthem of success/Money is the reason we exist
He says to "be cool" but, I don't know how yet
Tell me I'm your National Anthem
Summer's in the air and baby, heaven's in your eyes
I'm standing over your body, hold you like a python
You said to "be cool" but, I'm already coolest
Do you think you'll buy me lots of diamonds?
Overdose and dyin' on our drugs and our love and our dreams
God can only, I need somebody to hold me
Boy you have landed in the land of sweetness and danger
dark paradise
All my friends tell me I should move on
I'm lying in the ocean, singing your song
Loving you forever, can't be wrong
Even though you're not here, won't move on
there's no remedy for memory your face is like a melody, it won't leave my head
Your soul is hunting me and telling me that everything is fine / But I wish I was dead
Every time I close my eyes it's like a dark paradise
No one compares to you
I'm scared that you won't be waiting on the other side
When you find true love it lives on
There's no you, except in my dreams tonight
There's no relief, I see you in my sleep
Everybody's rushing me, but I can feel you touching me
radio
Not even they can stop me now
Their heavy words can't bring me down
Boy I've been raised from the dead
No one even knows how hard life was
I don't even think about it now because i've finally found you
Now my life is sweet like cinnamon / Like a fucking dream I'm living in
Baby love me cause I'm playing on the radio
Pick me up and take me like a vitamin
'Cause my body's sweet like sugar venom
I heard the streets were paved with gold
How do you like me now?
carmen
It's alarming, honestly how charming she can be
You don't want to be like me, don't wanna see all the things I've seen
The boys, the girls, they all like [Carmen]
She gives them butterflies, bats her cartoon eyes /She laughs like God, her mind's like a diamond
Only seventeen, but she walks the streets so mean
It's alarming, truly, how disarming you can be
Relying on the kindness of strangers
Tyin' cherry knots, smilin', doin' party favors
Put your red dress on, put your lipstick on
million dollar man
You said I was the most exotic flower
Holding me tight in our final hour
I don't know what you do, it's unbelievable
Someone as dangerous, tainted and flawed as you
I love you honey, I'm ready, I'm ready to go
How did you get that way, I don't know
You're screwed up and brilliant, and look like a million dollar man
So why is my heart broke?
You got the world but baby at what price
It isn't that hard [boy] to like you or love you
If you're going crazy just grab me and take me, i’d follow you down
summertime sadness
Dancin' in the dark in the pale moonlight
High heels off, I'm feelin' alive
Cruisin' down the coast, goin' about 99
Got my bad baby by my heavenly side
I know if I go, I'll die happy tonight
Oh my God, I feel it in the air
Telephone wires above are sizzlin' like a snare
Honey I'm on fire, I feel it everywhere
Nothin' scares me anymore
Think I'll miss you forever, like the stars miss the sun in the mornin' sky
Kiss me hard before you go
I'm feelin' electric tonight
I got that summertime sadness
this is what makes us girls
Remember how we used to party up all night?
Sneaking out and looking for a taste of real life
Drinking in the small town firelight
Teachers said we'd never make it out alive
She starts to cry, mascara running down her little Bambi eyes
We all look for heaven and we put love first
Don't cry about him
That's where the beginning of the end begun
Everybody knew that we had too much fun
We were skipping school and drinking on the job with the boss
Baby's table dancing at the local dive
Drinking cherry schnapps in the velvet night
Screaming, "Get us while we're hot, get us while we're hot"
A freshmen generation of degenerate beauty queens
Crying 'cause I know I'm never coming back
without you
Everything I want I have
I even think I found God in the flashbulbs of the pretty cameras
Hello, hello ca-can you hear me?
You're so good, your love is deadly
Tell me life is beautiful
They all think I have it all
I'm nothing, without you
All my dreams, and all the lights mean nothing without you
My life is sweet like vanilla is
Gold and silver line my heart
Can you picture it babe the life we could've lived?
Boy, you're so dope
We were two kids, just tryin' to get out
Live on the dark side of the American dream
We would dance all night, play our music loud
When we grew up, nothing was what it seemed
lolita
Would you be mine / Would you be my baby tonight
Could be kissing my fruit punch lips in the bright sunshine
'Cause I like you quite a lot, everything you got don't you know
It's you that I adore,[though] / I make the boys fall like dominoes
Kiss me in thedark tonight
I know what the boys want, I'm not gonna play
Never was in love, skipping heart beats with the boys downtown
Topple you down from your sky forty stories high
Shining like a god, can't believe I got you inside
I want to have fun and be in love with you
I know that I'm a mess with my long hair and my suntan, short dress, bare
I don't care what they say about me, what they say about me
You make me happy
lucky ones
Let's get out of this town, baby we're on fire
Everyone around here wants to be going down
If you stick with me, I can take you higher, and higher
It feels like all of our friends are lost / Nobody's found, found,
I got so scared, I thought no one could save me
Every now and then, the stars align / Boy and girl meet by the great design
Could it be that you and me are the lucky ones?
Everybody told me love was blind / Then I saw your face and you blew my mind
Boy get into my car, got a bad desire
You know that we'll never leave if we don't get out now
You're a careless con and you're a crazy liar
But baby, nobody can compare to the way you get down
Tried so hard to act nice like a lady / You taught me that it was good to be crazy
Feels like Falling in love for the first time
SINGLES
burning desire
Every Saturday night I get dressed up to ride for you, baby
I drive fast, wind in my hair, push it to the limits 'cause I just don't care
You ask me where I've been? I been everywhere
I don't wanna be no where but here
I've got a burning desire for you
Every Saturday night I seem to come alive for you
Your hands were on my hips, your name is on my lips
Over over again, like my only prayer
dont’ call me angel
Boy, don't call me angel, you ain't got me right
I appreciate the way you watch me, I can't lie
I fell from Heaven, now I'm living like a devil
You can't get me off your mind, I appreciate the way you want me
god save our young blood
Damn, look at the sunrise / Glowing finish line
Made it in record time, hey, baby, we made it
My head's faded, headlights dilated
Baptized in blue skies
Roll the window down, reach out, feel around for new life
Damn, you and those green eyes
We can never stop movin', we see nothin' but the green lights
God save our young blood
Climbed up the tree of life, kicked out of paradise
Living good, doing evil is the toss of the dice
She's an angel and a devil of her own device
Baby save me one last sip while you strip on the beach
I'll save you in the waves if you swim too deep
looking for america
Took a trip to San Francisco, didn't work, so I left for Fresno
Pulled over to watch the children in the park / We used to only worry about them after dark
No bombs in the sky, only fireworks when you and I collide
It's just a dream I had in mind
That's another place and time
So many things that I think twice about before I do now
once upon a time
I know you, I walked with you once upon a dream
I know you, that look in your eyes is so familiar a gleam
I know it's true that visions are seldom all they seem
But if I know you, I know what you'll do
You'll love me at once, the way you did once upon a dream
season of the witch
When I look out my window, many sights to see
So many different people to be
When I look over my shoulder what do you think I see?
Oh no, must be the season of the witch
shades of cool
My baby lives in shades of blue / Blue eyes and jazz and attitude
When he calls, he calls for me, not for you
He lives for love / He loves his drugs, he loves his baby too
But I can't fix him, can't make him better
And I can't do nothing about his strange weather
You are unfixable, I can't break through your world
He prays for love, he prays for peace
Your heart is unbreakable
you must love me
This isn't where we intended to be
We had it all, you believed in me, I believed in you
Certainties disappear
What do we do for our dreams to survive? /How do we keep all our passions alive
Deep in my heart, I'm concealing things that I'm longing to say
Scared to confess, what I'm feeling frightened you'll slip away
How can I be, any use to you now?
Give me a chance, and I'll let you see how / Nothing has changed
young and beautiful
I've seen the world, done it all
Hot summer nights, mid July when you and I were forever wild
Will you still love me when I'm no longer young and beautiful? / Will you still love me when I've got nothing but my aching soul?
I've seen the world, lit it up as my stage now
Hot summer days, rock and roll the way you play for me at your show
And all the ways, I got to know your pretty face and electric soul
Dear lord, when I get to heaven, please let me bring my man
All that grace, all that body, all that face, makes me wanna party
He's my sun, he makes me shine like diamonds
evermore thoughts
willow
I wasn’t sold on this on first listen but I really liked it on second listen with more attention to lyrics
video is also really lovely, big fan of that
really really like the difference in melody for the diff appearances of “life was a willow and it bent right to your wind”
favourite lyric: “I come back stronger than a 90s trend” - the look she does at the camera cemented this as my fave line even more
champagne problems
down as one of my faves from the start
love love love the narrative
proper late night with cider, melancholy vibe
kind of like a grown up/worse feeling august in terms of vibes?? as in like the experience described feels like a more intense heartbreaking august in a way
really like the conclusion too
favourite lyric: I really struggled to pick here but: “you booked the night train for a reason/so you could sit there in this hurt” for sheer visceral emotion, “dom perignon you brought it” for the way its sung, “How evergreen, our group of friends/Don't think we'll say that word again” and “she’ll patch up your tapestry that I shred” for lyricism
gold rush
again, one i wasn’t super sold on the first listen, music and the vibe didn’t really interest me
first notes made me think of epiphany
but then i listened to it watching the lyric video and holy shit
now v appreciative of the melody and bass and the pace of the lyrics
really really like her embracing talking about jealousy
love love love the ending and beginning being the same holy shit
favourite lyrics: “at dinner parties, I call you out on your contrarian shit” and the way she sings “with your hair falling into place like dominoes”
‘tis the damn season
again preferred on second listen, wasn’t on the list of early faves
the best xmas late night walks vibe, walking through frosty streets at home between houses, embracing the only time you get to think, losing yourself in music and nighttime with freezing hands and cloudy breath
would’ve fit my 2019 xmas vibe too
melancholy and nostalgia
favourite lyrics: “sleep in half the day/just for old time’s sake” and “and the heart I know I’m breakin’ is my own”
tolerate it
god girl you deserve better
kinda like a sad last great american dynasty in terms of searching for approval
naive innocence taken advantage of
drunk in my garden walking round to try and forget my life kinda vibe
favourite lyrics: “i know my love should be celebrated/but you tolerate it” and “now I’m begging for footnotes in the story of your life”
no body no crime
holy shit did i sleep on this at first but oh my god its so good
start gives me show of hands vibes which is great
her husbands acting different and it smells like infidelity - just the way she sings this is so so fucking good
this is the easiest song to listen to and holy shit its just great
favourite lyric: “she said “that ain’t my merlot on his mouth/that ain’t my jewellery on our joint account”
happiness
“all the years I’ve given/is just shit we’re dividin’ up” - v v true, you have to rebuild your life after every relationship and taking it all apart is so much more sudden than building it up
like an alternative to the 1 which I LOVE
but also some parallels to this is me trying: “I hope she’ll be a beautiful fool..... sorry I didn’t mean that” vs “my words shoot to kill when I’m mad”
the whole bridge is iconic - “I can’t make it go away by making you a villain” - in the short term, anger at an ex can help, but eventually you have to move on, and its easier to accept that there was good in the relationship after a while, and it makes looking back on it better
“no one teaches you what to do/when a good man hurts you/and you know you hurt him too” - blame on both sides is much harder to take and grieve and its hard to know how to cope with that. it also makes advice more complicated because there isn’t much you can say to help
favourite lyric: “both of these things can be true” - always love duality and nuance in literature and its nice to hear it acknowledged in a climate of binary oppositions and no shades of grey
dorothea
nostalgia for the future
now prob my most listened, gets stuck in my head and one of the few i do listen to in isolation - like august
Reminds me so much of Ella - each other’s history, not each other’s whole future but in there somewhere
again sapphic vibes, real strong esp because of the ella vibes its the whole in between romantic and platonic affection
“hey dorothea, do you ever stop and think about me” - that’s the way I think of people I love esp ella and people from that era of my life, and anyone where its kinda open ended or just grown apart
favourite lyric: “and damn dorothea, they all wanna be ya”
coney island
instant fave - marked down from first listen and probably still one i actively look forward to
much like with exile, the male vocals GOT me
“did I shatter you” that line broke my goddamn heart
favourite lyrics: both for the sheer feelings of the vocals and the lyricism “were you standing in the hallway/with a big cake, happy birthday/did I paint your skies the darkest grey” and “and when I got into the accident/the sight that flashed before me was your face”
ivy
the way she sings goddamn could be the whole fucking song its so beautiful
“my pain fits in the palm of your freezing hand/taking mine, but it’s promised to another” - the passive here is great
“he wants what’s only yours”
the trilogy of these lyrics “what would he do if he found us out?”, “he’s gonna burn this house to the ground”, “and drink my husband’s wine”, the recklessness, the drinking his wine like a secret defiance
“my house of stone/your ivy grows/and now i’m covered in you” - fucking hell this is the best imagery - even with the strongest walls and foundations, the love crept through and grew inside her til she was covered in it
favourite lyric: quite literally just the words “oh, goddamn”
cowboy like me
“dancin’ is a dangerous game” - hell yeah I get so many feelings from this, it just reminds me of the intimacy of dancing and the feeling of swaying in someone’s arms
“and the skeletons in both our closets/plotted hard to fuck this up” - both like active interference of exes or just simply trauma, unresolved issues
“forever is the sweetest con” - believing hurts and everything ends but its worth it for the time you have
favourite lyrics: “now you hang from my lips/like the gardens of Babylon”
long story short
first notes make me think of between the saltmarsh and the sea even though its SO different but also a bit like august idk why
“if the shoe fits walk in it/til your high heels break” - i just love the imagery of this line
“fell down the rabbit hole” - living for this line and the wonderland vibe
“but if someone comes at us, this time i’m ready” - the vibe of like not looking for a fight but defending what you love
favourite lyric: “past me/I wanna tell you not to get lost in these petty things” - YES BITCH also the energy I give to past me and future me gives to me now or “long story short I survived”
marjorie
another song I come back to on its own
this is the exact wistful vibe i look for in calm ish songs, can be sad, can be happy depending on a mood and this is perfect
the video is incredible and marjorie providing the backing vocals made me cry also it being in the same place on the record as epiphany was on folklore
“never be so polite/you forget your power/never wield such power/you forget to be polite” - love the use of wield, it also feels like the medium women try to find between being a “bad bitch” and being ladylike, but not a medium society will accept bc fuck that, the exact way THEY wanna do it instead
really the song i needed after the year of so much grief, and i know it’s gonna bring me comfort when grandma goes, especially the line “what died didn’t stay dead”
favourite lyric: “watched as you signed your name: marjorie” - the way this is sung will literally stay with me forever, its like a legacy in one line
closure
again, instant fave
the vibe of you don’t owe someone shit just bc they feel guilty is so good
“yes I got your letter/yes I’m doing better” “I know that it’s over” - I’ve moved on and I don’t need your permission for that or your well wishes thanks
Moving on doesn’t mean forgiveness
I just love the melody so much and its such a good song agh
favourite lyric: “I know I’m just a wrinkle in your new life/staying friends would iron it out so nice”
evermore
“grey november/I’ve been down since July” - most explicit pandemicy vibes i get, I was home and it was almost possible to just regard it as a normalish summer, looking after the dog and living at home and now its coming up to Christmas and I’m living away from home, our family is split across 5 homes in 4 cities and its fucking hard (not even sure if its that type of down but that’s how it made me feel)
“writing letters/addressed to the fire” - literally just picked up on this lyric and has kinda a dual meaning for me. 1 -feeling shit about things you create, putting in effort, just to throw it away. 2 - tactic for tackling anxiety, just getting rid of thoughts and releasing them from my brain
“Cannot think of all the cost/And the things that will be lost/Oh, can we just get a pause?” - again, v pandemicy and so relevant to the fam’s 2018-2019, we just needed a pause, we had to keep going and not process what we’d lost or we’d never carry on
such a good depression song
favourite lyric: “staring out an open window/catching my death”
Colours in His Eyes
Genre : bestfriend!au
Theme : fluff
Pairing : Seungmin(Stray Kids) X Reader
Description : you were bestfriends with a cute dork named Kim Seungmin. day by day, you tried so hard to deny the flutters you got whenever you saw him. you learned to accept these unexplored feelings however after seeing him bouncing up and down adorably at his favourite band's concert.
Seungmin had been your next-door neighbour since birth. Naturally, the both of you became the best of friends all throughout kindergarten till high school. People would always see you guys as a package. Whenever people saw one of you, they could bet the other was probably chasing the former down.
Little did Seungmin know, you were kind of harbouring a teeny weeny crush on him that you tried so hard to deny.
What was there not to like about him? His pure randomness clearly put a smile on your face everytime. You never knew when he'd go 'GAAAH' right in your ear while looking at you with crazy eyes. He was the definition of goofy dork.
Things like this were what made your heart fluttered. He didn't care what people think of him. He just lived his life however way he wanted. You admired that part of him. He also had the voice of an angel coated with sweet honey. He'd be belting out high notes of a random Day6 song and you still wouldn't have minded at all. You were merely lost in his presence at times.
Despite that, you didn't dare to act on your feelings for him. You were scared even. Pursuing something more than a friendship might end up ruining it so you promised yourself to not step over the friendzone.
So far, it'd been working. You were just two bestfriends messing around.
“Y/N-ah, guess what?”, he was running up to you with his puppy eyes, “Day6 is gonna have a concert a few days before my birthday!”
He was jumping enthusiastically in the middle of the school hallway. You chuckled softly, gently gripping his shoulders to calm him down.
“Really?”, you asked, as if you hadn't been checking the band's twitter for concert dates the other night.
“Yeah..but I don't know if I can go”, he sulked.
“My mum's been pestering me to set aside money for college so I'll feel kinda bad if I use the money to buy concert tickets instead”, he slumped his shoulders in defeat.
Your heart crumbled at the sight of him. You wanted to see him happy. Hence why, you had been saving up for his advanced birthday present since ages ago. Tickets to his favourite band, Day6's concert. He would be absolutely thrilled.
“Seungmin-ah, you never know when someone's listening to your wish”, you gave him a reassuring smile as you ruffled his hair.
He pouted his lips and sighed, “You're right”.
“Of course, I'm always right”
He laughed adorably at you bumping hips with him. You lifted your head to his level only to gaze upon his twinkling eyes. Warmth enveloped your beating heart. You had it bad but you tried to ignore it.
A few days later, you got an email. You hoped it was what you were expecting. And it was. You tried to suppress your excitement but you couldn't help but let out a high-pitched squeal.
Ding!
You peered at your phone. Seungmin, who was literally next door, had texted you. He was probably thinking you were going insane for squealing at 11pm.
You opened the notification.
“Have you gone insane? Please don't tell me it was just a cockroach”, his message read.
“Hey, did you just leave me on seen???”, you giggled uncontrollably at his obvious disbelief. You could almost picture his offended face staring at his phone.
He continued spamming your phone but you chose to ignore him.
Your eyes left your phone to look back at the screen in front of you. You were re-reading the email you got from Mnet which said that you'd just won the giveaway for Day6's signed album. You weren't sure if you had any luck in the giveaway but maybe there really was someone out there who wanted to make your bestfriend smile just as much as you did.
Now it was just ticketing that you'd have to go through. You stretched your arms and cracked your knuckles. This was going to take a long time but you had all night to score those concert tickets. You could almost imagine Seungmin's reaction seeing the tickets and album. You blushed at the thought.
It was exactly two weeks before Seungmin's birthday. You felt your heart racing non-stop. Calming yourself down with deep breaths, you clutched the concert tickets and signed album against your chest protectively. You stared at the door separating you and Seungmin. It was now or never.
Just as you raised your fist to knock on Seungmin's door, you were faced with his beautiful face. Your breath hitched at his beauty. Even though he had his ridiculously big glasses on and looked half-asleep, you couldn't help but get lost in his eyes.
“Uhh-”
“..were you going to hit my face?”, he nonchalantly leaned against the doorframe.
“I can if you want me to”, you joked as you folded your arms.
He let out a hearty laugh, “But really though, what brings you here at-”, he glanced at the clock in his living room, “9 in the morning?”
“Here”
He glanced down at the nicely-wrapped items in your arms. “You do know my birthday isn't until next two weeks?”, he smirked as his fingers fiddled to unwrap the presents.
Gasp.
Before you knew it, you were dragged into a bone-crushing hug. You felt vibrations against you as Seungmin broke out into uncontrollable sobs. Your cheek gently rested on his chest as you let this moment sink in. His happiness was your happiness after all.
He eventually let go of you, not before placing a faint peck on your forehead. That caught you off guard. Yeah, you guys were bestfriends but Seungmin had never done that before. You froze for quite some time, trying to process his endearing gesture.
“So..is that a yes?”, you teased him, still half-frozen in a daze.
“Y/N, I could fall in love with you”, he said while looking lovingly at the presents you got him.
You knew he was joking but why did you have butterflies in your stomach? You shook your thoughts away though. You didn't want to harm such a friendship. So you just smiled silently at his remark, your heart crushing a little bit on the inside.
Concert day finally came. Seungmin was especially pumped. He'd been blasting Day6's songs all day long. It was surprising your other neighbours didn't file a noise complaint.
The music suddenly stopped and not long after you heard a knock on your door.
You opened your door and saw Seungmin dressed in MyDay colours grinning widely at you. You didn't even get to say anything, he'd already dragged you outside the apartment building.
The two of you arrived at the concert venue and immediately you were loving the vibe the fans were giving off even before they all entered the venue. You had heard a lot about the reputation MyDays had as Day6's very own fanchoir. Like Seungmin was, you were also excited.
You had a bit of trouble finding your seats but eventually found them. You peered to your left to see Seungmin taking a bunch of selfies and pictures with his white camera. You giggled under your breath.
“Y/N, LOOK THEY'RE HERE!”, Seungmin was bouncing up and down, waving his lightband around.
Your focus turned to the big stage in front. There stood all the Day6 members with their instruments, ready to start the concert. Excitement filled your whole body.
“EVERYBODY! LETZGEDDIT!”, the tallest guitarist, Jae, raised his hands in the air before killing it on stage with the other members.
The whole venue shook as everybody was getting hyped by the minute.
“Okay everyone we're going to have to end the concert soon”, Sungjin, the leader, said with a sad expression on his face.
Everyone groaned loudly especially Seungmin who'd been enjoying the heck out of the concert.
“The last song of the day is something that I'm sure everyone is familiar with”, you could practically hear the smirk in Young K's words.
And he was right, even you could recognise the song. Sing Me. Groans became cheers. But your mind was elsewhere.
All throughout the concert, you'd been stealing glances at Seungmin. He looked the same as usual but for some reason, you kept getting nervous while being beside him that evening.
You knew it all started when Colors was playing. The lyrics had struck a chord in you that left you thinking. Would you ever be able to live a life without Seungmin in it? Would you be happy?
Looking at him, you saw only colours in his eyes. Colours that painted your skies.
Eventually after much thought, you solemnly accepted the fact that maybe just maybe- you might actually be in love with him. He wasn't just your crush anymore.
With that sudden realisation, you became tense merely being beside him.
You stood there listening silently to Sing Me. When it was nearing the chorus however, you felt Seungmin's warm hand grabbing ahold of yours, intertwining them together. You glanced up at him questioningly and only saw his eyes softening with an unreadable expression on his features. Blush on his ears.
Sing with me. He had mouthed.
So you did.
Tiger By The Tail, Ch. 3
NicoMaki, NozoEli, RinPana, KotoUmi, Love Live, 2K, 3/?
Summary: The plan to distract Nico begins...and our last Japanese tourist arrives.
Chapter Three
Nozomi read the email again. It sounded like Umi, polite, formal, composed, requesting Nozomi do some research on local possibilities for photo shoots, which Nozomi was planning anyway, until the last line, which read, “Please refrain from discussing this with Nico as I do not wish to undermine her confidence in Kotori’s designs” which if you had made a study of Umi’s habits, sounded like panic. Rin bounced behind Nozomi, shaking her head, drops of water flicking Nozomi, “What are we doing, boss?”
Nozomi considered how much to tell Rin, who was very very bad at not blurting out the very thing anyone was trying to keep out of the conversation. Just keep Rin focused on task, so that she didn’t give anything away to Nico, who was ALWAYS looking for what was going to go wrong.
“We’re going to drive around and check out locations, then I’ll meet Eli for dinner and see what she has to suggest.”
“Ooohh, Eli seems really cool. I bet she’ll have some great ideas for us.” Rin’s eyes gleamed. Nozomi was almost certain Eli had meant a private discussion but Nozomi couldn’t strand Rin; maybe Nico would want dinner company?
“Let’s head out and tell Nico what the plan is.” Nozomi tucked her phone away, response to Umi sent.
Rin saluted, grabbing a sweater from the top bunk, “You got it.”
###
Nico, under a stack of blankets, was scrolling through a playlist on the screen in the living room, frowning. “Nico should be on here.” She switched to search function, pulling up her latest video, watching it again, with a critical eye. They definitely needed a better lighting set up. Nozomi had talked about renting gear.
“Nico meets her biggest fan every morning in the mirror.” Nozomi pulled on the top blanket, as she leaned over the couch, to grab for the remote. Nico’s viewing choice was no surprise. It was barely worth the tease, but Nozomi was on task.
“If Nico doesn’t like it…” Nico began.
“No one will ever see it.” Rin interjected, batting an ornament on the Christmas tree to watch it spin. “But this cover’s great Nico. Why are you frowning at it?”
Before Nico could answer the front door banged open and Honoka came barrelling through the hall, hung a turn at the kitchen and nearly fell over the back of the couch Nico was sitting on.
“Nico!” Shouted. As if Nico weren’t two cushions away. “Umi says you have to come now. Kotori needs you to try on the clothes. Since there wasn’t a fitting.” Honoka bobbed up and down, arms on the couch, Nico staring at her. “It’s important.”
Nico huffed and turned off the screen, her English curt. “Nico might be busy.”
“But you’re not.” Nozomi poked Nico.
“And you’re here for the clothes, right. So they have to fit.” Honoka’s bright eyes were so wide and innocent that not even Nico could find a spark to start an argument.
Enjoying the stares of everyone in the room while she decided, Nico took a minute before levering herself off the couch. “Yes.”
“Yippee!!” More shouting. “I’ll text Umi we’re coming now.” Honoka jumped, pumping a fist. Nico instinctively went into cautious older sibling mode, not quite frowning, but squelching Honoka’s exuberance with delay.
“Nico needs clothes.” Nico was not meeting Umi’s stylish friend the designer for the first time in leggings and a sweatshirt. She had acquired a designer outfit specifically for this situation, so Kotori would know she was dealing with a real professional. “Nico will go soon.”
“Cool.” Honoka pulled out her phone, typing rapidly.
Nozomi and Rin had their coats on, “We’ll see you later, Nico.”
Nico flashed her signature gesture, “Nico Ni will knock you out.”
Honoka was ignoring the Japanese, continuing her text conversation with Umi, Nico guessed. Umi would be a proper audience. She never let Nico down.
Shut out everything else, Maki told herself as she locked the door behind her and approached the piano. A certain amount of ritual was involved in this moment, not quite approaching an altar or a lover levels of depth, but a gathering of emotions, a tension, a familiarity as Maki sat on the bench, rested a hand for a moment on the polished, warming wood of the fallboard, revealing the keys, the cool welcome against her fingertips, the demand for effort, for excellence, for passion...Maki leaned back, maybe a little more like a lover than a shrine, not that she’d had much experience with either. But the piano was a means, an ally, a key to a language that actually allowed Maki the freedom to express everything that bottled up in her throat and chest. Maybe her mouth wasn’t made for expressing the turmoil twisting itself out of expectation and others, but with her fingers, her arms, her body, she could shout for space, for, ironically, a moment of quiet, to just settle enough to know what it was she wanted. She wondered what it would be like to...Maki didn’t even know the words for it, it was an action, a feeling, a slam, a collision, into something that held, that would let her just be.
Maki didn’t know what she was playing, she had no space to listen, everything was being driven into the piano, to transform into the pieces of Maki that kept spinning away. Was there anyone here to listen, to hear?
The clothes were impressive. Just the pictures had gotten Nico on a plane, flying across a huge ocean. Umi had impeccable taste so Nico knew when Umi pitched the project it would be something spectacular. Nico had also not been unaware of Umi’s gloom since the very kind and decorative Kotori Minami had ended her internship at the atelier and returned home. Now, while Nico herself was an independent modern career woman, she didn’t fault anyone who managed to find someone to get sentimental about. Yes, she totally judged Tojo, who seemed to have mastered the casual weekend relationship. Nico would not have flown across an ocean if Nozomi had pitched the project. But for Umi, Nico shrugged, and smiled at Kotori, who was a whisper of steel and grace, answering all of Nico’s questions without hesitation. Nico couldn’t put the pieces down, the textures, the lightness, the way the light caught additional colors, none of that had been in the sketches and all of it was magical. Nico found herself getting excited as she imagined the photos, the camera turning her natural charisma up by 1000 when wrapped in these beautiful slices of artistry.
“Yazawa-san…” Kotori started.
“Nico.” Nico waved an invitation to intimacy as she put down a white blanket robe that seemed to contain in its threads the silver glimmer magic of first snow at midnight. Kotori was finishing that piece, she’d wanted to see it on Nico so that the painted on kanji could be placed in the proper locations. Umi had been confirming the order of strokes, offering to do the calligraphy herself, but Kotori seemed reluctant to put that responsibility on the other woman. Nico wondered if the seamstress realized how seriously Umi took the samurai’s mastery of both sword and brush.
Kotori reached for her chalk, “Nico...thank you, now that I’ve seen this, I can mark the locations.”
“Once again, Kotori, if you want me to, I would be more than happy…” Umi stepped forward.
“Oh, I couldn’t…” Kotori shrugged, demurring, “this is all of this fabric I have, any mistake...you’re very sweet, but...”
Nico couldn’t take the look on Umi’s face, like the damsel in distress had turned down the rescue and was slowly freezing in the ice tower. She coughed, drawing the focus back to Nico, “Maybe Umi could demonstrate her talents on another fabric, similar in texture.” Nico bowed, “Nico will cover the costs. For an original Sonoda.”
Umi blushed, Nico raised a hand to cover her own mouth, pretending modesty, but actually covering a broad grin at Umi’s embarrassment.
“Oh…” Kotori glanced from one to the other, giggling, “I’m sure Umi’s talents are more than up to the job, I just thought…”
Nico gave in and laughed at her friend’s grand gestures as Umi bowed, “I will not disappoint either of you.”
Now see, if there had been someone like Umi, serious and stunning and silly and too easy to tease, in Nico’s life, interested in more than friendship, the rising pop star might have made a little time for something that wasn’t her career.
Eli was surprised to find she had not a family standing in her office, but one client, a small, mousy, bundled up in layers woman by the name of Koizumi Hanayo, visiting New England with her parents, who had stayed in Boston. Eli had a good reputation among Japanese tourists, but solitary guests were unusual. Groups of co workers were more common. Not that Eli would let this throw her off stride. . “Hi, I’m Eli Ayase. Nice to meet you.” Eli offered a hand, Hanayo shaking it timidly while muttering something Eli couldn’t quite make out.
“Sorry,” Eli leaned down, “I couldn’t hear you.”
Hanayo leapt back, the earflaps on her hat a comedy short of their own, “Sorry.”
“Please take a seat.” Eli indicated the chair opposite hers and sat behind the computer, “Do you downhill or cross country ski?”
Another mutter.
Eli smiled broader, her voice encouraging. “You’ll have to speak up. I’m sorry.”
The young woman took a huge breath, her hands clasped in her lap, raised her head, blinking eyelashes over shy violet eyes, her Japanese rapid, “Neither, Ayase-san. I’m sorry.”
“No need to apologize.” Eli slouched a little, shoulders opening, trying every body language trick she could think of to be less intimidating. “Most of my clients just...already like the outdoors.”
Hanayo shook her head, “My parents hired you. They are worried that I’m…” Hanayo fidgeted, “neet.”
Eli was confused, “They think you’re too tidy?”
Hanayo sighed, “Do you know what otaku means?”
Eli typed it into her computer. “You’re an anime fan?”
“Idol.”
“Idol?”
“Singers. Pop stars.”
“Oh.” Eli had heard of that. “Like Babymetal?”
Hanayo’s eyes went wide as she squeaked, “You know them? Aren’t they amazing. I just love…”
“I’m not a huge fan.” Glad that she had finally gotten a reaction out of her charge, Eli didn’t want the young woman to slip back into embarrassment, “but my friends were talking about their last North American tour.” Eli turned away from her computer, “So your parents sent you here for some healthy outdoor activities. And hired me for the parts of the week I had available.”
Hanayo nodded, “They have business in Boston. They didn’t want to leave me in Japan alone over the holidays.”
“Where are you staying?”
“Hotel.”
“I have a friend with a B and B, maybe they’ll have a room. There’s a friendly group from Japan there right now.”
“Really?” Hanayo looked interested.
“Cute girls too.” Eli winked, expecting Hanayo to blush or be flustered...but her client had just leaned forward, a spark behind her glasses.
“And they might have a room?”
“I’ll have to ask Honoka. They might be booked. It’s…” Eli frowned, trying to remember the name of Nozomi’s client, she’d looked her up, “Yazawa Nico.”
“NICO NI!” Hanayo was on her feet instantly, shoving Eli’s desk back, demonstrating unexpected and impressive lung capacity, “NICO NI is here? I have to meet her.” Hanayo started for the door.
“Slow down.” Eli was on her feet, hand out, “First we have to find a winter sport for you. Your parents requested pictures. I can’t afford a refund.”
“Oh.” Hanayo collapsed in her chair.
“But after that, I’m meeting Nozomi and if you don’t have any plans, you can come along.” Eli suspected that even if Hanayo had already made plans, they would be quickly cancelled.
With a great deal of effort to not throw herself at Eli or the door, Hanayo spoke in a more normal tone. “Thank you, Ayase-san.”
“Just call me Eli,” Eli grinned, and pulled up her contact list, “Now what do you think about ice skating?”
As Above, So Below
The Prince of Hell has a secret.
To be fair, Michael Langdon, the Lord of the Underworld, has many secrets. Those are secrets that he’d be proud to share, ones that would have creatures across all realms cowering at his feet in fear, awe, and envy. If this particular secret was to get out, he would be the laughing-stock of Hell.
Michael Langdon has feelings for a human. He wants to shudder at the mere acknowledgement of that; he’s not supposed to have feelings of happiness, joy, or love. The only happiness he ever feels is when he’s watching the tormented souls of the damned burn in pits. But now, whenever he lays eyes upon this woman, this mortal, he can almost feel his heart start to beat.
It’s ironic, to him, that one of the purest beings he’s ever seen lives next to a Hellmouth. Those who reside on the mortal coil know this particular portal as the Murder House, a structure in which his demons love playing. The house on one side is occupied by dust and rats, the old tenants having moved out when they saw the red skies and flocks of crows. On the other side, a house has been converted to a boarding house occupied by college students. College students are some of the best souls to take as they can be easily persuaded into dangerous situations, which has made for an enjoyable two years for some of his soul collectors working in this area. As far as the neighbors are aware, the so-called “Murder House” is undergoing a very, very long string of renovations.
In all of Michael’s centuries of ruling Hell, he’s seen the Earth change immensely. Civilizations have rose and fallen, wars have been fought, people have been born and people have died. But never has Michael been as captivated by someone as he is by you.
He often wonders what it is that draws him towards you. Is it the bright smile you always seem to have for him and everyone you pass? Could it be your choice of fashion, the pinks and blues and greens that adorn your body, so much different than his usual red and black attire? Your body itself is a whole different story for Michael. He’s seen some of the most beautiful women to ever walk the Earth, and yet they don’t hold a candle towards you.
Michael Langdon can list a million reasons why he thinks that he loves you, which is why he’s hoping that you won’t come to hate him for what he’s about to do. Although the events soon to transpire have long since been prophesied, the idea of prophecies are a very difficult thing for mortals to understand. He stands in front of the ornate mirror, watching as two servants finish dressing him. They’ve decided on his finest cloak for this occasion, beautiful silver fastenings keeping it up around his neck. A simple black suit with a red tie accompanies a swipe of red powder on the inner corners of his eyelids.
“Sire, are you sure that there’s no easier way to go about this?” Hecate, or Madison, as she preferred to go by nowadays, asks from the doorway. Michael glances at his most trusted advisor and longtime friend, shooing the servants away.
“Trust me, I’ve been trying to think of other ways. I just can’t see her believing that I’m the God of the dead without thinking I’m a crazy person. I need to show her.” Madison rolls her eyes, stalking over to Michael to redo his crooked tie.
“Just promise me that you won’t immediately resort to kidnapping a human woman and dragging her down here?” Michael shoots the woman a playful glare, batting her hands off of his tie.
“Contrary to popular belief, I’m not a mean person.” Madison snorts at this, giving him one last glance before deeming him ready.
“Alright, Mr. Nice-Guy, you’re ready.” Michael’s palms break into a sweat, which he didn’t even know was possible until now. Letting out two sharp whistles, he waits for the sound of paws bounding down the hall. Cerberus, the three-headed hellhound, tramples into the room and immediately sits, tail wagging behind him.
“You wanna go up above, buddy?” Michael rewards the dog with a pet on each of its’ heads when he starts joyfully barking.
“Ugh, you’re taking the mutt? That’ll impress her.” Madison scoffs, watching as Michael puts a glamour on the dog. Suddenly, the once-huge beast is now the size of a normal labrador, complete with one head instead of three.
“(Y/N) likes dogs, and she’s met Cerberus multiple times.” When Michael turns his back, he hears what sounds like Madison coughing the word ‘whipped.’ He stiffens, but doesn’t turn around to take the bait. “You’re lucky I’m going to need you, or else I’d throw you in the ninth circle.” It’s an empty threat and they both know it. He and Cerberus make their way to the front of the palace, where there’s already a realm guard waiting to take the king to Earth.
“Good luck. You’re gonna need it with those looks!” Madison takes one last shot. Right before Michael’s form disappears, he flips off the delighted goddess.
You’re sitting under the shade of the large oak tree in the front yard, humming softly and working on some homework, when barking makes you look up. A grin crosses your face when a large dog comes bounding out of the house next door, chasing a red bouncy ball. When the dog sees you, he immediately abandons his toy and charges towards you. Homework is suddenly forgotten when a giant mass of fur and slobber lands on top of you.
“Well, hello there Cerberus!” The dog sits next to you, nudging his head against your chin in an attempt to get petted. “Oh I know, it must be so rough being such a cute dog.” You oblige, gladly scratching behind his ear.
“At least I don’t ever have to worry about him going too far when you’re out here.” You look up to see the man whose beauty rivals the sun. Michael, from what you’ve deduced, owns the house next door and is often over there performing renovations himself. You smile shyly, taking his outstretched hand and allowing him to pull you to your feet.
“Be careful or else I might not let him leave next time.” You joke. You can’t help but to take note of his runway-like attire, putting your plain blue jeans and pink blouse to shame. “How do you renovate a house in a cloak, exactly?” Michael looks down, as if noticing for the first time how overdressed he is.
“I’m actually on my way to some business meetings. I had just stopped by to check on the new paint samples.”
“You seem to be making good progress on the house. Just last week it was new floors, right?” Michael nods, glancing from your face to the house.
“Would you like to take a look around? There’s been a lot of changes since the last time you snooped around inside.” Your face goes red at this. It had been a week after you first moved in with your new roommates. As a lover of the paranormal, it was basically impossible for you to not visit the infamous Murder House. When you had met Michael the following day, he mentioned that it was a delight to watch you ghost hunt through the security cameras, causing you to try and avoid him as much as possible until the embarrassment died down.
“I thought the house was abandoned!” You make your case, taking Michael’s outstretched arm. “You’re always so proper, y’know?”
“How so?”
“I’ve never met a guy who wears cloaks and escorts women like he’s going to a gala, that’s all.”
“I haven’t noticed that. I was just raised in a different time, I suppose.” You laugh.
“‘Raised in a different time?’ Michael, you can’t be more than five years older than me.” He raises an eyebrow, almost challenging you.
“Five years is quite a difference.” He jokes. Grabbing the key from one of his pockets, he unlocks the door and swings it open with a flourish. “Have a look.”
The house really has changed since the last time you were here. Gone are the creepy murals with people dying, the mosaic windows and the wooden panelling straight out of the ‘70s. Now, the interior is clean, with wide windows, a stone fireplace and dark wood floors.
“Oh, it’s beautiful.” You say in awe, taking in every inch of the beautiful house. “Think you’ll finally be able to sell it?”
“I’ve actually become rather attached to this house.” Michael admits from the living room, where he’s glancing over some paperwork. Cerberus has settled on a rug, deciding now’s a good time for a nap. “I kind of want to keep it.”
“I don’t blame you.” An impish grin spreads on your face. “The ghosts haven’t scared you off?” Michael groans, playfully rolling his eyes.
“I should have known you would ask about the supposed ghosts that haunt these halls.”
“You’re telling me that with all of the knocking down walls and changing the floorplan of this place that you haven’t disturbed one of the souls that died here?” Michael has always been adamant that this is a perfectly normal house, albeit with a sordid history. “Just money-hungry people making up stories to get their fifteen minutes of fame,” he’s always responded to your questions.
“I don’t believe in ghosts, (Y/N). Maybe they just don’t believe in me, either.” He deadpans.
“Wow, you ever thought about motivational speaking?” You say sarcastically. “Did the city ever come to take away those weird jars with the body parts that Dr. Montgomery left here?” Dr. Montgomery, the ‘doctor to the stars’ in the ‘30s, ran a secret basement abortion clinic, where he also supposedly experimented with reanimation. It was gross, morbid, and a subject you were totally interested in.
“They did. We actually just started on the basement. I’m pretty sure we got all of the creepy stuff removed, but if you want you can help me sort through the items previous owners have left here.” Your eyes light up at this. Getting to look through antiques that each had their own story is extremely enticing. Michael, having already seen the gleam in your eyes, makes his way to the basement steps with his usual hands-behind-his-back gait.
The walk down to the basement is decidedly more creepy than the rest of the house. You’re not sure if it’s the general spookiness of basements or all of the illegal abortions performed down here, but you can feel a dark aura in the cavernous room. There’s an old claw-foot bathtub under one window, a couple of empty shelves, and a rocking chair that you swear is moving on its own.
“Oh jeez.” You whisper.
“Too scary for you?” A voice says in your ear. You jump, spinning and hitting Michael on the shoulder.
“You asshole! You’re lucky I didn’t punch you in the nose.” He looks entirely unimpressed at this, but you pretend to cock a fist anyways.
“Hmm, maybe next time. Most of the good stuff I’ve found is in this room.” Michael takes your shoulders and steers you towards a closed door at the opposite end of the basement. You’re not sure why, but a sense of dread fills you the closer you get to the door.
“Michael, I think I need to get going.” You say quietly, the dread increasing. You try to maneuver out of his grasp, but his grip on you only tightens.
“Just a little look, and then you can go.” Without anyone touching it, the door opens. Wind whips around you, a smell of- is that brimstone?- fills the air, and you can hear screaming from miles down. A cavernous pit stares back at you, its mouth wide and welcoming. You shriek and elbow Michael in the stomach.
He doubles over in pain, allowing you your chance. You sprint for the stairs, tripping over Cerberus, who’s not sure why you’re yelling. You yelp when your palms scrape across the rough wood, ripping open the top layer of skin. There’s no time to waste, so you haul yourself back up and try to remember the way to the front door.
“Help, he’s going to kill me!” You scream, hoping that one of your roommates will hear your calls and save you. The open front door slams shut when you’re mere feet away, startling you. A pair of strong arms wraps around you, picking you up like you weigh nothing and hauling you back downstairs. Michael ignores your screams completely, even trying to hush you.
“Michael, please don’t kill me. Just let me leave and I won’t tell anyone.” You mutter, twisting in his arms to look at his face. He smiles softly down at you, wiping the tears away from your face.
“I’m not going to kill you, (Y/N). I’m sorry it had to happen this way, but I promise I’ll explain everything when we get home.” The wind is howling, your hair getting caught in Michael’s face. You don’t have time to question what he’s saying before he takes a graceful step over the edge of the pit, both of you falling down below.
contrary to popular belief, jungkook does set some rules for himself. he doesn't have many, but the ones he does have he's strict about.
the first was no drunks in his jeep. he already broke that rule by allowing you and your friend seulgi in, so maybe that was out the window. impressive too, because he hasn't let anyone in his truck that hammered since jimin after taehyung's 21st. he threw up all over the dashboard and jungkook could swear he smelt vomit in there for months. even though he's sensitive to smell and hates repeating the same mistakes, jungkook decided you were worth the risk.
which brings him to his second rule: messing around with girls was just that. messing around. every time he needs reminding of that jungkook remembers the cactus plant taehyung gave him back during his very first semester. he killed that thing in record timing to the point where even taehyung wondered if there was a malevolent spirit in the place, because how else could you kill a cactus? it perfectly depicted jungkook's most telling trait: he can't look after things. look out for things, sure. he can step into a fight if his friend needed help or walk an old lady to her car with groceries. because those were a one off, in-the moment things that jungkook is good at navigating. but long term things? investing himself? he could barely stomach his own emotions for a weekend let alone someone else's, so it really was a recipe for disaster for everyone involved. get in, get out, get going onto the next. that way everybody wins.
and that neatly bleeds into his final rule: no bringing girls back to his place (if he can help it). jungkook preferred to keep his personal and personal personal life separate, so the less girls knew about him outside the bedroom the better. besides, it's not like he's totally unreasonable - if his place was closest and the situation called for it, then fair enough. but that was hardly ever the case.
which is why he's here: stumbling around the park in the middle of the day, totally and utterly lost. he was sure he had taken this shortcut once or twice before but apparently he was wrong, because he didn't even know this half of the park existed.
"the fuck is this place," jungkook mutters to himself, shifting as best as he can through a patch of long grass. he's pretty sure he's got a twig in his shirt somewhere and he doesn't even want to think about that squishy thing he just stepped in. his dick may have had a blast last night (and this morning) but the timbs on his feet had definitely seen better days.
jungkook had been wandering around for so long now he considers calling the girl who's place he'd just left in hopes of getting some directions...but then realised he didn't have her number. and even if he did, what would he say? i made you cum faster than you could spell out my name but now i need you to fish me out of the park like a lost dog? and then the next hurdle: what was her name again? jane? joy? jill? it quickly becomes irrelevant when jungkook gets through the end of weeds and broken branches to an open plain of grass again. it's a cloudy day so it wasn't particularly beautiful to look at, but he's just happy to be out of the mess of trees. looking out to the large pond of water just where the steepness of a hill stops, he double-takes when he sees that the person sitting atop it is...you.
you. bundled up in a hoodie, no makeup, tongue sticking out while you work to get the shading of that wilted tree just right. it's a public place, there are people out on the streets, cars whizzing past, but jungkook still feels like he's stumbled upon something private, intimate even - so beautiful do you look, so simple and candid. just you in your own little world. his fingers practically itch for a camera.
raising a hand before calling out your name, jungkook is unable to stop a smile blooming across his face when you snap your head up. he comes over to you, out from all the bushes like it was a totally normal place for someone to be. you can't help but stare at him like he's go an extra head when he finally reaches you, hair all mussed and eyes wonderfully bright. he smells vaguely of women's perfume and cigarette smoke but fuck if you don't gulp a little at how delectable he looks, leaf in his hair and all. "fancy seeing you here, noona."
"i could say the same," you lean to peer over his big shoulder, quirking a brow. "jungkook, why were you in the woods?"
he looks back with you to inspect the path he came from. "i was in the woods?"
"yeah," you laugh, his dopey expression making warmth flourish in your chest. he looks so loveable when he has no idea what's going on, eyes all big and mouth hanging open like an endearing dumbass. the urge to kiss him hits you out of nowhere. "i'm um, guessing you don't come to this park often?"
"i do! i've been here like," he counts his fingers. "twice? once sober." he looks down at his feet bashfully. "i'm actually a little lost."
"i hadn't guessed," you grin up at him, gesturing, "the entrance is way on the other side, over there. if you keep walking this way and then turn left at the-"
"i'll just wait until you're done," jungkook insists, plopping down on the grass next to you. his shirt wrinkles up around the belt to extenuate the flat of his stomach, settling into the ridges of what quite obviously are his covered abs. he looks so innocent from the neck up, round eyes blinking at you through his hair innocently like he isn't all hard edges and stiff lines from the shoulders down. a wolf in sheep's clothing and all that. "if you don't mind, that is? i don't know if you realised but i'm not exactly good with directions."
"you're right. if i let you wander off alone i'll probably see your face on the news tomorrow. just gimme a minute to pack all this-"
the gentle hand enveloping yours stills you. "please. take your time," jungkook hums, letting you enjoy the warmth of his touch before settling back with his palms in the grass again. "i don't mind relaxing here a little while anyway."
you open your book again upon his insisting. "i won't be too long, promise. this fucking pond is just being difficult."
"looks pretty perfect to me," he muses, pretending to inspect your work when really he's inspecting you.
it goes straight over your head though, too enthralled in getting the lines right, getting every stain of colour placed where you want it. you made the dreariest looking pond look like a glittering lake, alive with colour and life that didn't exist in the real world. he scans the other page; more trees, dogs playing with owners, cloudy skies and orchids, so many orchids even though this park had none. you clearly had a liking for them.
"it's definitely not perfect," you laugh, wetting your brush and softening more edges. "but that's what i love about painting. perfect doesn't exist. or even desired." he hums in agreement, no longer able to look at your art, only you. the way your lashes gently flutter, a dimple forming at the side of your mouth when you purse your lips. you were so easy on the eyes jungkook doesn't realise he's staring until you break the silence. "so are you gonna tell me why you're lost in the park or are you gonna make me guess, slick?"
he grins. "you have three strikes, noona. use them wisely."
"booty call?"
"damn," he huffs, head tilting back while listening to your victorious laugh. "listen, it wasn't exactly a booty call. that would imply i met jane before," he pauses. "i mean joy. wait, jennie?" he scratches his head. "what's your friend's name again, jisoo? definitely not her..."
"ask your dick, he'll probably remember. do you want me to give you two some privacy?"
"what's it to you?" jungkook laughs, nudging your shoulder with his while he gnaws his bottom lip, because it's not like he was about to admit that jane/joy/jennie was the third girl he slept with this week to get you out of his head. it was slutty even by jungkook's standards, and even then it still didn't stop him from secretly hoping you'd at least get a tiny bit jealous - and at best, curious to take their place.
"nothing, nothing," you throw him playful look. "i'm just another art hoe sat in the park, who am i to judge?"
he laughs again, nose scrunching up cutely. "how did you find this place anyway?" jungkook peers around the fence of trees, making the area feel so much more secluded, as if the rest of the world was off somewhere else. "i never knew there was such a big pond here."
"neither did i, until jimin."
"jimin?"
a nod. "he brought me here a few years ago, back when i was," you don't know how to finish, wetting your lips. "back when i was going through a tough time. family issues and all that. he said everyone needs a place to scream and cry and this was his, so he gave it to me too. it also just happens to be very pretty."
you can feel jungkook's inquisitive eyes on you, regarding how wistful you look remembering the days you and jimin would come here every week for some respite from life. it all seemed so long ago but like yesterday at the same time, as if walking around in a dream. it's jungkook that lulls you back to earth with his velvet soft voice. "you know it's weird, i know jimin hyung inside out, have done since we were kids. when he's mad, upset, whatever it was," he pauses thoughtfully. "but i don't think he's ever opened up to me about his feelings. anyone, really. he comes out here to scream but he can't like, talk to people?"
"jimin's like that," you agree. "everyone thinks because he has a million friends he's an open book, but it's the opposite. i've known him all this time and he's never even cried in front of me!"
"same," jungkook sighs. "weird. especially since he was, like, the biggest crybaby from ages four to sixteen."
"sixteen?" you laugh. "seriously?!"
"you have no idea! one time as a joke i asked if he was crying even though he wasn't, and he got so annoyed he started crying," jungkook snickers, eyes crinkling happily while he falls about in giggles with you. "but then he grew up, went to college. gets himself some pussy every time he's upset now, i guess."
"it sounds awful when you put it like that!" you pause. "maybe it is a little awful."
jungkook shrugs. "it's the easy way out, is what it is. doesn't make him a bad guy."
you prod him. "are we still talking about jimin?" you're met with another nudge before continuing. "what i mean is he's always thinking of others, that jiminie," you shake your head fondly at the thought of him, and jungkook sees your affection for him etched all across your face. "i keep telling him that processing other people's emotions for them isn't healthy, but he won't listen to me. have at it when you get the time."
"what was it?" jungkook asks. "the emotions he processed for you, i mean?" he raises a brow when you make a face at him. "or do i have to reach level fifty before unlocking your tragic backstory?"
"try level one hundred," you scoff, hauling yourself up to collect your things. "now, do you wanna go get some coffee or sit here and talk about our abandonment issues? choose carefully, you only get one."
"coffee," jungkook scrambles to pack your art supplies for you, making you laugh. "coffee, coffee, coffee!"
"jiminieee!" you call out across the house, kicking the door shut behind you after letting yourself in. you're glad you never threw out your old key because it came in handy during times like this, when jimin couldn't answer a text to save his life. he usually wasn't so m.i.a. but that didn't mean he didn't have his moments from time to time. you just assumed maybe he had a girl over, in which case you had no problem eating all the snacks in the kitchen and playing video games with taehyung until he was done. "why didn't you pick up, i called you like, twice today! anyway i was thinking, do you-"
you stop dead in kitchen, surprised to see hoseok there with jimin. it's dead quiet, heads snapped to you like they've only just stopped talking upon your arrival. you can't help but blink back at them, a little dazed, unsure what you just walked in on. but before you can think too much about it, hoseok is shooting you one of his sweet smiles. "hey, ____!"
"hey hobi, uh," your eyes skirt over to your best friend nervously. "didn't think i'd see you here..!"
"hyung just came over for a catch up," jimin says, which is about as much of an explanation as you're gonna get. "sorry i missed your calls, i left my phone upstairs. everything good?"
"yeah i just," you shuffle closer to jimin, a habit you had when you felt uneasy. even though there was nothing to be uneasy about, so to speak; you and hobi had been texting regularly for a couple weeks now, so it's not like you had a reason to be so skittish. so why do you get the nagging feeling there's something you're missing? you ignore it in favour of jimin's pleasant expression. "i was wondering if you wanted to go see a movie? that new horror film just came out and i'm free tonight, so..?"
he strokes your back apologetically, venturing dangerously low. boyfriend territory, so to speak. "sorry ____, but i have so much work to catch up on before this weekend! remember irene noona?"
you lean into him involuntarily. "yeah?"
"she's having another thing on saturday. i really wanna go but i gotta submit my project first," jimin explains, his gentle caress along your spine enough to lull you into submission alone. "but hobi can go with you! you're free tonight, aren't you hyung?"
"um," hoseok wets his lips, eyes darting between the pair of you. "yeah. yeah, i'd love to take you for a movie, ____. if you don't mind, that is."
"oh, yeah of course not! that sounds great," you pat jimin's chest briefly. "too bad you can't make it though. next time?"
"next time," he nods, and you do your best not to shiver when he squeezes your hip.
you're still in denial all the way to the movie theatre, right up until hoseok pays for the tickets and the popcorn and the good coke. there was no denying it after that: you were officially on a date with jung hoseok.
and it was the first of many. because hobi was funny and understanding and sweet, planning around your schedule and picking things you liked to do. even if you cancelled last minute or opted for a night in, he was so chill about it all. if there was a definition of prince charming in the dictionary, hobi's face would be plastered next to it, his name in glitter cursive. this is further supported by the way he brings you flowers before taking you to a fancy dinner he saved up for, all the way uptown.
evidently, it was only natural that your first kiss with him be perfect as well.
"oh, hoseok!" you coo, plucking the fresh lillies from his hands happily. his cheeks burn with excitement, because you only ever call him hoseok when you're sincerely touched. he follows you into the kitchen while you put the flowers in some water, like a puppy on a leash. jimin was right, he muses. this way, everybody wins. "they're so beautiful! you really shouldn't have, i can imagine these costing a fuck tonne..."
"don't worry about that," hoseok says, stepping closer to you when you finally face him. he looks awfully dashing in his dress shirt and pants, hair swept back to reveal even more of his bright, handsome face. he reaches for your hand gently. "i'm just glad you like them."
"i love them," you smile, his heart fluttering with how pretty you look in that moment, all sweet features and a sweeter dress. "no one's ever given me flowers before, you know. maybe i'll sketch them tonight, so i remember forever."
"no need," he chuckles, taking another step. you're close now, awfully close. the richness of his brown eyes throws you, studying your face with the most gentle smile in the world. before he looks down at your lips. "i'll buy you flowers for as long as you'll let me."
hoseok reaches up to cup the side of your face, feather light and soft. he waits for you to pull away, and when you don't he leans in to meet you half way in a short, honey-sweet kiss. his lips are just as soft as they look, just as plump as you'd imagined. you sigh into his mouth when he kisses you again, a bit longer this time, falling into his chest for more before hoseok pulls back with a glittering grin.
"come on," he says brightly, tugging your hands. "i busted my ass for that reservation, so no tardiness!"
you hum with a nod, clutching his hand and letting him lead you out.
but of course, you got there on time. dinner was perfect, the food was delicious, the weather was lovely, absolutely everything was just right. and yet when hoseok kisses you goodnight at the door, you wonder why your chest feels like it's got a chunk missing. like scraping the bottom of a tub of ice cream for a piece of cookie dough and not finding any. you pad into your room, waiting expectantly for hoseok's got home safe text that he never forgets to send. you're so caught up in your head trying to figure out if the chicken you had at dinner is what's making you feel off, before your phone pings! right on time. but then you do a double take at the id.
"you're having boy trouble, aren't you?" is the first thing taehyung says when you drag him out of his room. and he's not wrong. jimin's out so it's safe enough to take the conversation to the kitchen, tae's smirk over his coffee mug only making you flinch harder. "well?"
"i mean," you tap the table nervously. "sort of? it's just not something i wanna talk to the girls about. or jimin either for that matter. unfortunately you're the only neutral party i have to indulge in."
"charmed. so what did hobi do?" he asks simply. "eat the nuggets off your plate? propose a threesome before the third date? wear denim on denim?"
"...one of those is not like the other, tae."
"you're right. if he took your nuggets the fucker wouldn't be even be alive right now."
"but to answer your question, no he didn't do anything. in fact, i'd go as far as saying he's been so perfect it's starting to make me think he's a hologram or something. some kind of sexy robot designed to charm women but he broke out of the lab and now we're dating."
he gives a snort of derision. "come on, he's a guy. there's gotta be something gross about him."
"nope! he dresses well, smells good, never late, texts me back," you hold your head in your hands dramatically. "he even finishes his political arts essays extra fast just so i have an outline for when it comes to writing mine. the guy is a saint."
"so why did you drag me out of my room during wank hours?"
"jesus, taehyung! it's one in the afternoon!"
"well?"
"i just!" you throw your hands up comically. "i think there's something wrong me! he buys me flowers, texts me good morning...so why don't i have butterflies? why aren't i rushing to reply to him? just the other night i left him on read for ju-for some other guy. i mean, half of me is like if i don't feel something then that's valid but the other half of me is wondering why? why do i feel like i ordered the wrong drink at a coffee shop and i only realised after the first taste? like, it's not a bad drink at all, it's actually quite nice. but it's not what i wanted. you know?"
he raises a dismissive hand to your rambling. "answer me this. do you wanna fuck him?"
you pause, mulling it over. "yeah, i guess."
"you guess?"
"well i wouldn't say no," you admit, huffing as you shift your mug between your hands. "because he's crazy hot and a great kisser, if that's any indication. i'm sure he wouldn't let me down. but i have cause to say the same about you and probably half of jimin's other friends too, so."
taehyung rolls his eyes. "well, ignoring the fact that that was possibly the most tepid compliment you could have given me," he leans across the counter so you can't miss the way his eyes bore into you. "if you're not desperate to fuck him, and i mean getting so excited you shiver a little every time he comes within a meter of you, then that's that. game over, case closed. you should never have to guess whether you wanna fuck a guy or not."
"but he's doing everything right," you wail childishly. "and it's not like i don't like him taehyung, i do."
he shrugs to that. "right. you just don't like him enough to continue dating him on your merry way without coming to me for advice? come on, listen to yourself! the guy's half way to asking you to be his girlfriend, if there's no spark now then what are you waiting for?"
"but maybe there will be! eventually! i definitely like him more and more the longer we've been dating," you counter. "isn’t that worth waiting for?" you groan when tae does nothing but shoot a pointed look in reply. "fine, i'm making excuses. but in my defence if you had to break something like this to jimin you'd be stressed too."
"jimin?" taehyung repeats, brows furrowing. "what does he have to do with this?"
"i mean he pretty much set us up. he's super invested too, he remembers when i need to text hobi back more often than i do." taehyung chews on the information. it doesn't sit well in his stomach and it shows, his lips pursing and his legs jiggling restlessly. "at least it put an end to jisoo and seulgi's crazy idea that jimin liked me. weird though, i didn't think guys would give so much of a shit about their friends relationships."
"yeah, weird," taehyung grumbles, effectively switching the conversation to what he knows will distract you before you can clock onto his pinched expression. "speaking of friends, jungkook says you two have been talking a lot recently. that true?"
"oh, yeah. yeah, i guess," you suddenly find your empty mug very interesting. "we text a bit. went out for coffee a while ago."
taehyung double takes. "coffee?" a pause. "like a-"
you silence him. "don't say date. don't you dare say date. i swear to god if you say date i'll make you a new coffee and pour it in your lap taehyung, i'll do it."
he smirks. "did he pay?"
"no, i got the drinks. but he got the pastries."
"but did he order any pastries?"
silence.
"it was a date."
"no it wasn't!"
"how are you feeling about friday?" jimin asks quietly, lips pressed into your hair so the words come out muffled.
you're half asleep against him, it's one of the few times you're snuggled up into him and not the other way around. you're not sure what trashy romcom is playing anymore, all you know is that jimin's chest is so comfortable under your head, his body so warm with yours cradled into it. you yawn before answering, burying your nose into his soft hoodie. "lunch with hobi? we have lunch together all the time, why would-?"
"no," he says softly, pulling back slightly to look at you. "the other thing."
you meet his eyes, and then it hits you. "oh." a heavy beat. "i-i totally forgot. i can't believe i forgot..."
"i'm sorry, i shouldn't have said anything," he apologises, tucking you further into his arm. you hope your heating cheeks don't give you away with how close you are against him, breathing him in like you would a lover. you're so entranced by his flushed lips and tender expression that you barely listen to what he's saying. "it's good that you're with hobi that day, though. keep you distracted a little, you know?"
"yeah," you hum, but it doesn't keep the sinking feeling out of your chest.
"i only brought it up because i wanted to cook for you that night," he smiles. "i'll make that pasta you like, we'll play some video games. it'll be fun."
you gaze up at jimin in that moment and you hear the words he won't say loud and clear: i don't want you to be alone. your affection for him surges and you think he can see it in your face, because he smiles back at you with a tenderness you don't see often. you shiver a little when he brushes some hair from your face, his touch lingering ever so slightly to the point where you think he just might kiss you. he doesn't, of course. he never has, and never will.
"that sounds perfect," you say finally, dropping your head back into his shoulder to hide your flushed face if anything. you wrap a tight arm around his middle, a silent thank you, and he resumes his cheek tucked against your head.
the next day it rained.
the kind of rain that comes out of nowhere. one minute jungkook was flying down the road with all the windows down and namjoon hyung's playlist blasting and then the next it's pouring, the sound of raindrops hitting his truck so loud he thinks maybe it will leave a dent on the bonnet. jungkook's just glad he got his sunset pictures done and dusted before the downpour, because fuck if his photography degree didn't rest in the hands of the weather forecast at this point. he has enough time on his hands to consider squeezing in a smoke with namjoon before maybe heading out for the night or even seeing what yoongi hyung is up to, but all that goes flying out the window when jungkook sees you. again.
you. standing in the street in the pouring rain outside the post office like a fucking crazy person. you, with no coat, no umbrella, not even a jumper. it's like you've seen a ghost and you're too scared to walk through the door, or maybe you are the ghost. swerving into the curb in a haphazard park, jungkook doesn't know. all he knows is that if the rain doesn't sweep you away any minute now then the fucking pneumonia would.
"hey! noona, what are you doing?!" he screeches through the open window. you just stand there, dumbstruck. even when you finally hear jungkook's yelling, it’s like his voice slips through one ear and out the other. "hey! are you fucking insane? it's pouring!" jungkook shouts above the downfall. you still can't move. "____, get in the car!"
you probably wouldn't have if you hadn't looked up to see jungkook's face, twisted in disbelief and what also appears to be worry. cars honk at him from how badly he's parked, butt of the truck sticking out in the road. he stopped for you...
he stopped for you. so you get in the car.
"are you crazy?!" he asks again as he frantically rejoins the traffic while you fiddle with your seat belt, so sopping wet and freezing that you slip and slide with the buckle. jungkook helps you just like last time, reaching over to click you in before glancing back at your face. you're absolutely drenched, hands wrinkled and hair dripping, clothes soaked through to the bone. and even though you're shivering in the passenger seat with barely any semblance of sanity, your grip on the little blue envelope in your fist doesn't falter. "why the fuck were you just standing there?"
"i," you start, but the words freeze up. "i, um..."
jungkook eyes you like the mad person you most definitely are, and you don't blame him. you look mad. you feel mad. out of sorts, like your spirit is floating around your empty body and the only reason you can't hear her yelling is because the sound of the rain is drowning it out. your chest heaves, air not coming into your lungs fast enough, pulse pounding in your ears. "put on my hoodie," he snaps, gesturing to the seat behind yours. "do you see it, the red one?"
you twist in your seat after a shaky nod, clambering around before grabbing it and tugging it over your head as you're told. it's so big and soft, so warm and so...jungkook. your eyes flutter shut when you bury your nose into the fabric, breathing in the smell of him. fresh laundry, soap, the faintest cologne. and something unmissably sweet. you don't know why but your eyes suddenly brim with tears.
"hey," jungkook says nervously, not knowing how to handle this. "you okay?" another beat. "you gonna tell me why you were out in this goddamn monsoon, or?"
you finally turn your head to look at him, really look at him. silver bracelets glimmer from jungkook's wrists while he drives, his hair matted and sticking up at the back a little. his muscles are hard, you can see the bulge of his biceps. his jaw is sharp, his mouth pursed into a line unhappily, but his eyes are soft. his voice is soft. his hoodie is soft. "i was," you look down at the envelope. it's crumpled and sodden but you haven't let go of it. "i was going to post this. i mean, i wasn't. well, i might have, but..."
jungkook steals another glance because he still has no idea what the fuck is going on. "you couldn't have taken your indecisive ass inside the post office to do all that?" you go quiet again and jungkook's chest feels tighten for some reason. "what kind of letter is so important you'd get drenched for it?"
"it's not a letter," you mumble. then, louder, "it's not a letter, it's. it's a card."
"a card?" he frowns. "like a birthday card?"
you nod. it's hits you then, like a punch in the gut: the shame, the utter embarrassment of it all. of jungkook fishing you out of the rain like this so you don't catch a death wish of a cold, bundling you up in his car like a little kid who got lost. but that's what you feel like, a kid wandering around. a basket case with a birthday card. so it was no wonder your thoughts start to spew from your mouth like projectile vomit but in word form. "remember, um," you gulp, trying to reign in your racing mind. "remember i told you i had, uh, family issues?"
jungkook peers at you, eyeing the road nervously between pauses. "yeah..."
"well, um," you scratch your head, hair flat to your scalp from all the rain. you ruffle it, irritated. "long story short, it's that. like i know i showed you my sketchbook and let you watch me paint in the park and rush to draw flowers before they die but all that stuff is...it's the reason why i'm here. i love it, i love art and it's who i am but if i didn't i probably wouldn't have been caught out in the rain and you probably wouldn't have come found me and-"
he shakes his head. "woah, woah. you're not back tracking far enough, what are you talki-"
"my family," you gasp. "they're not like me. they're not like me at all, jungkook, but i tried to be like them. my mum's a brain surgeon and my dad's a chemical engineer and my sister's a physics professor in some fancy university and i was gonna be just like them. i was gonna throw out all my paint and charcoal and be medical biologist, but i couldn't do it. i tried so hard for so long, but. but i couldn't do it," you're faintly aware of the tears sliding down your cheeks. "why do you think i'm friends with jimin? or rather, that he's friends with me of all people? we met through mutuals and by the time i dropped out of my science degree he was the only one who would still talk to me. i would have been living out of my car for eight months if it wasn't for him."
"what?" he eyes you frantically. "what do you...?"
"my family renounced me. cut me out of their name, threw away all my stuff, kicked me out the house, removed me from their will. everything you can think of, they did it. they're smart after all." you start to laugh at how ridiculous it all was, even though you're crying, even though you're angry, even though you're conflicted. "we haven't spoken in years."
"wait, just wait a second," jungkook tries to keep up. "they disowned you because you decided to be who you are and not what they wanted? what kind of pathetic idiots would throw away their own kid over something like that?"
"because their reputation is everything," you sigh. "you don't get it, jungkook. the kind of name they made for themselves is some top dog shit. they publish papers and take part in groundbreaking research like it’s a hobby. for them to say that one their esteemed daughters dropped out of university because she wanted to be a painter or some shit is a disgrace to their reputation."
his mouth visibly upturns, like he's tasted something bad. "they're the ones who are the disgrace. god, what fucking assholes!"
"but maybe it's better to be an asshole than a dumb fuck," you wave the drenched envelope mockingly. "look at me! i stood outside in the rain because i couldn't decide if i wanted to post my dad a birthday card or not! they haven't spoken to me in years and i still send them a fucking card every birthday," you cover your forehead, embarrassed just from saying it out loud. "they probably set it on fire the second it gets passed the mailbox! they probably throw it straight in the trash and here i am, still sending it."
"but you didn't," he points out. "you still have it there in your hand, don't you? and it didn't exactly look like you were rushing to get inside when i saw you either."
"well yeah, because i think it finally hit me how stupid i am," you look down at your knees. "i just wanted them to know that i don't forget the important stuff. i'll never forget. if i don't post it today then my dad won't receive it on time for friday, and. god, why am i still calling him my dad when technically he's legally not even my relative anymo-" you wet your lips, shaking your head. "it's been years. it's been years. and they've never replied. the only one that's still holding onto this whole thing and getting hurt by it is me, so maybe...maybe it's time i end it. i've already moved on in every other way and this is the last thing that's left, the last tie i have with them, so...yeah."
you wait for it; the spiel of expletives that usually follows when you divulge your past. how your former family don't deserve you, how you should turn your back on them just as they did to you, how wrong they were and how much better off you are in the long run. all things that you whole-heartedly agreed with, if you didn't you wouldn't be here. but moving on isn't a straight line. forgetting isn't like waiting for a pin to drop.
"i can't believe you're related to such disgusting pieces of shit," jungkook starts, knuckles whitening against the steering wheel. it's the first time you regard him now that you've finished rambling, and you can finally see how livid he looks, his face pinched together angrily. "have they even seen your art, though? just because you aren't talented in the same thing they are you get thrown out? all those fucking degrees and scientific bullshit but they can't even see their children as people, what useless fucks," and then, out of nowhere, "do you want me to turn around?"
your head snaps up. "what?"
"the u turn is coming up," jungkook clarifies, looking over his shoulder to check his blind spot. you stare at him, wait for any indication that he's joking or just fucking with you. he takes your wary expression as hesitation. "i can go in and post it and you can just wait in the car, if you want."
"wh-what..?" you try again, unable to do anything but gawk at him.
jungkook regards your disbelief, sighing curtly. "look, my opinion about those pricks is just that - my opinion. at the end of the day it's your life not mine so i can't tell you to do shit. no one can. so if you want me to turn the car around to go and post that card for you, i will. i can't help you with the other stuff, but i can help you with that."
your eyes well up again, hands shaking like leaves. you hadn't even told jimin about the cards in order to avoid the scorn, and yet here was jungkook. a boy you had only met a handful of times ready to support a decision that even he didn't agree with. the feeling was as relieving as it was...foreign.
he wets his bottom lip while you blink away your tears hastily. "so?"
"no," you say finally. "no, it's okay."
he looks at you seriously. "are you sure?"
you nod. "yeah, i'm sure. could you just, um, take me to jimin's? i think seeing him will help me feel better."
jungkook nods, changing lanes for the new route. "does he know? about the cards, i mean?"
you shake your head with a tiny laugh. "no way, he'd flip a shit if i told him! you know how protective he is, he hates my family more than i do."
"well i'm not exactly far off at this point either," jungkook mutters, and you can't help but smile. it makes him smile too, the gripping feeling in his chest washing away at the sight of your shining teeth and dimpled cheeks. he likes the way you look in his big jumper, hair messy and eyes bright. out of all the sunset pictures he took today, he realises that none of them compare to you in his passenger seat right now. "do you think you'll say anything?"
"nah, there's no need," you pause thoughtfully. "he's making me dinner on friday. to get my mind off it all, you know? sometimes i really don't understand why he does all this for me, but..."
"he loves you," jungkook shrugs, and you can't help but wince like you've been pinched. "he said it himself, you're like family to him."
"really?" you chuckle. "what a sap."
"i told you. the nation's crybaby," jungkook smirks, pulling up outside jimin's place. he reaches out to touch your wrist when you go to remove his hoodie. "don't, you can keep it. don't look at me like that, i have like a hundred-"
"i'll wash it and bring it back to you," you take his hand before he can remove it. "thank you, jungkook."
"don't mention it," he starts, but you shake your head.
"not just for your hoodie," you say, the thrum of your heart suddenly in your ears again. you grip his wrist, tugging him over the console. it's like your body acts without your brain's permission because it's all over in a flash; jungkook's doe eyed face close to yours, your soft lips against his cheek in a short kiss.
his mouth is still hanging open slightly when you jump out his car and wave back cutely. he thinks maybe he imagined it, maybe he's about to wake up any second now. he's not sure why his palms are suddenly clammy and his heart is racing a mile a minute because lord knows getting his cheek kissed is the most innocent thing to take place in this truck, but he can't help it. the smell of you mixed with rain linger in the air and jungkook has to take a second to steady his hands on the wheel, fix his breathing like he's a fifteen year old who's never been within an inch of a girl before. for the first time in years, he panics.
don't bite off more than you can chew, jimin had said. and suddenly jungkook hears it differently.
if I ask nicely?
summary: Raena and Bucky get married. Finally. And Steve meets a cute redhead, good with kids, artsy, full of energy, laughter and bitter heartbreak. What will this weddinghold for them? words: 4772 | AO3 warnings: FLUFF, so much H A P P I N E S S
This is for @helraisingstar because it is her birthday today. I’ve been working on this quite a while and finished it today. It’s self-insert but it’s cute. Give it a go!
The constant crashing of the waves, warm sand underneath, palm trees in the back, swaying softly in the breeze, cotton candy skies and, the sun shining down on the ground...
The scenery looked amazing and Steve's hands slipped into the pockets of his white suit while his gaze wandered over the palm trees in the distance.
“It's a stunning location Raena chose for the wedding.”, Steve said and grinned at his best friend. Bucky stood next to him, nervously tapping from one foot to the other.
He looked good in his white suit, the silver vest bringing out his metal arm. His hair was up in a bun, only a few strands had come loose in the wind. He nervously bit his lower lip but Steve placed his hand on his shoulder, pressing it gently.
Bucky nodded but then his gaze switched back to the rows of chairs, all with a purple ribbon around the backrest, lined up under a little white tent, all facing them, standing in front of the pavilion, over which they had draped the same white fabric that made the tent for the guests. Purple lavender was interwoven and decorated the pavilion. The pastor, his name was Gerry, stood next to them.
The guests had been arriving for the last twenty minutes and they had shuffled to find a seat and get their cameras out. A couple of kids were running around barefoot on the sand, nicely dressed in bow ties and dresses, nice shirts and Steve even spotted one kid in suspenders.
Everyone was just waiting for the bride.
And when she finally arrived, it was worth the wait. Her white lace dress swayed around her ankles, thin straps held it over her shoulders, all white. Her feet were barefoot and she wore bracelets of shells and pearls around her ankles. The braids of her hair were pinned up nicely and a few curls framed her face. Her make-up was discreet and Steve couldn't help but smile.
Her brother walked her down the aisle, chest pushed out with pride, a big grin on his face. Steve could feel Bucky stiffen up a bit next to him, but he looked like... Steve could not describe it. He just hoped that he would ever get the chance to look as happy as Bucky when he would get married. Someday.
Raena's hands were wrapped around a purple bouquet of flowers and held onto them tightly, stopping her hands from shaking. She obviously was blinking too much and tried to hide her tears of joy from her soon-to-be-husband.
As Raena’s brother, so to say, delivered her to Bucky, he shook Bucky's hand firmly and then kissed his sister on the cheek before taking his seat in the front row.
Steve shot a look over at Raena's bridesmaid, a girl in a pale purple dress with a band of pearls and shells braided into her dark hair, similar to Raena's. The bride's brown curls were decorated by little starfish clips, seashells and glittering pearls. She beamed with happiness.
While the ceremony went on, Steve watched the two. Raena looked as if she could hug the whole world. Bucky looked like he could not believe his luck. As they turned towards each other to say their vows it was as if the whole world around them stopped existing. They only had eyes for each other and their words were soft and quiet, only meant for the other one. Their kiss was passionate, no doubt. There was not an ounce of shame while Bucky pulled her closer and Raena buried her hands in the back of his vest.
And why would there be?
All the complicated times that these two hand been through, all the rough patches in their relationship and they still managed to get along. Although they often fought, at the end of the day they were all they needed. Steve admired that about them.
He applauded the loudest while the two made their way through the cheering guests towards the beach bar where the party would be. Their hands held the other one’s tight and their smiles nearly didn’t fit their faces. People were throwing purple lavender blossoms and then followed the married couple to another tent, further away from the shore. Steve was first in line to congratulate them.
“We’ve made it, Steve”, Bucky whispered in his ear as he hugged him tightly.
“No, you’ve made it, Buck. Just, look at her…”, he mumbled as a response and they both looked at Raena who got hugged by some friend. She still couldn’t help but smile.
Bucky nodded and patted Steve on his shoulder, before he moved on to hug Raena. “Congratulations.”, he said and Raena chuckled.
“We finally made it”, she said and Steve nodded. “Could you do me a favour, Steve? There’s someone who will play with the kids, do face painting and some crafting. She was supposed to be here before the ceremony ended, could you go and check if there’s a problem at the gate?”
Steve nodded. “Sure, anything to help.”, he said and left the comforting shade of the tent. The breeze coming from the sea made it nice and cool, as long as you stayed out of the sun. The beach Raena and Bucky had chosen for their wedding was a private one. Tony had been so generous to rent it for the occasion, as a wedding gift. Steve imagined it difficult to get past Happy and the other bodyguards without a proper invitation. And that was what this girl was probably lacking.
As he arrived he saw Happy and a girl in a light blue dress, her ginger hair being gently blown out of her face, in an argument. “But I am supposed to be here. I am already late. You have to let me in.”, Steve could hear her say and then throw her hands in the air in exasperation.
“Happy”, Steve said, as soon as he arrived next to them. “Raena sends me, I'm supposed to pick her up, I guess?” And with that Steve's blue eyes wandered curiously towards the redhead. ”I suppose you're here for…”
But she didn't let him finish. “For the kids. I was hired by Raena. And I should have started ten minutes ago.” Her green eyes sparkled and dealing with Happy made her incredibly, well, unhappy. Steve could see her lips pressed together tightly, her right hand balling up into a fist and unclenching again.
Happy shot her one last look. “Alright. Take her with you, Cap.”, he then said and stepped aside.
“If you'd accompany me, I'll bring you right to the bride.”, Steve offered and before he could finish, she had grasped her basket and walked past him.
Her face still lingered on an angry expression for a couple of seconds before she sighed and her features softened. “Look, I'm sorry. Today is just not the greatest day and now I'm running late and I’m usually never late.”
“It's alright, Rae is too happy today to be, well, unhappy about that.” Wow, that was a creative thing to say?! He chuckled. “You'll be fine.” He paused. “I didn't catch your name, sorry. I'm Steve.” He stopped and held out his hand. The redhead stopped in her tracks and looked at him, her mouth hanging open a little. She was wearing a white dress with purple flowers on it. Steve spotted freckles on her shoulders.
“Steve Rogers?”, she asked and he nodded, a tiny smile on his lips. This was only to cover how tiring it was to always be recognised, to always only ever be Captain America.
But then something happened that he had rarely encountered, the last time with Raena, as Bucky had introduced her to him officially. The girl closed her mouth and lost the adoration. She cleared her throat and shook his hand with a friendly smile: “I'm Liv. Olivia Fuller. Nice to meet you.” Steve swallowed his surprise and gave her a warm smile.
“Thanks for helping me out here. I bet I would have stood there for another hour if you hadn’t come to pick me up.”
He buried his hands in the pockets of his suit and smiled. “No problem. Also, I think the kids can’t wait to see you and whatever you have in there to surprise them.” He looked at the big picnic basket she carried with her and suddenly her smile got wide.
“I love this job, and doing it for Rae, on her wedding day? Even better, nearly perfect.” She smiled all over her face and then suddenly her expression fell and her lips were a straight line again, showing little to no sign of emotion.
“Are you alright?”, Steve asked and frowned, but then Olivia smiled and nodded. He perked up an eyebrow but held his comment to himself.
As they arrived at the tent, Raena and Bucky still received one hug after the other and had people congratulating them. But when Bucky turned around - it was weird, he always seemed to notice when Steve entered a room, just like it was back then, when Steve hadn’t had the serum injected and Bucky would always protect him - he nudged Raena carefully and she turned her head to see what this was about.
When she saw Olivia, a wide smile spread out on her face and she turned around to walk towards the redhead, but the other woman had already crossed the distance between them. She hugged the bride and Rae hugged her back. The two stood like that for at least a full minute, whispering words and giggling before looking at each other closely.
“You look so fantastic!”, Olivia exclaimed, taking special interest in Raena’s dress. She let the fabric run through her fingers and smiled absently. But then Steve seemed to notice the flicker again. A dark expression, just there for the blink of an eye, lingered on her face before it disappeared again.
“I’m so glad you could make it!”, Rae said and grinned widely. Then she turned to Bucky and took Olivia’s hand. “This is her, the wonderful, one and only Liv.”, she said and Steve swore Olivia blushed a little.
“Finally”, Bucky said and shook her hand. “I’ve heard so much about you already. It’s great to finally meet you. And thanks for helping out today.”
“Oh, I bet you have. And no worries, you’re most welcome.”, Olivia said and rubbed her neck. She seemed a tiny little bit uncomfortable and as Raena’s attention was drawn back to the last few people who still hadn’t congratulated her, Steve stepped forward.
“Do you need a corner to set up your…”, he eyed the basket, “stuff?”
A grateful smile spread out on Olivia’s face and she nodded. “Yes, that’d be good.” He led her through the large tent, crossing a dance floor and the buffet. Behind them, the ocean could be seen and heard. The constant crashing of the waves calmed Steve down.
“I think here should be alright?”, Steve said and turned around. They stood near the path back to the lavatories and the kitchens but still in sight of the round tables set up for dinner. The dance floor was to their left and so was the stage for the band.
“Do you need anything else?”, Steve asked as Liv put down the basket and started to open it.
“Oh”, she said and looked up as if she had forgotten that he was there. “Two chairs would be nice?”, she asked and Steve nodded. A few minutes later he was back, carrying two chairs. Meanwhile Olivia had put a blanket on the floor, big enough for at least four kids to sit on, a staple of books on one side, a couple of sand toys on the other. She was just unpacking a couple of face paints and brushes.
“This looks like fun?”, Steve said and put the chairs down.
“Oh I am terribly sorry but I doubt the groom’s best man is allowed to have his face painted. Especially not if he wants to make an impression on the ladies.”, she answered cheerfully and then suddenly clasped her hand in front of her mouth, looking at him in shock. “I… I am so sorry. I shouldn’t have said that.”
Steve still grinned: “No, it’s alright, that was great!”, he said and shrugged. “I mean, you may be right. And with a beard like that it might be hard to find any space left in my face to paint anyways.”
Liv smiled at him but before either of them could say a word, they heard to all too familiar sound of someone gently knocking a spoon against a glass to get the attention of everyone. Steve’s head perked around only to see that everyone had taken their place and the newlyweds stood near the dance floor, ready to make their first announcement.
“I should probably go”, Steve said and shrugged apologetically before he left to take his seat.
“We’re so happy”, Bucky said just as he sat down as quietly as possible, “that you’re all here to celebrate this day with us. Finally!” A couple of people chuckled. “For Rae and me it has been quite a long road to get here today, to finally be married to one another. But if this is the outcome, I might say every bump in the road, every retour was worth it.”
Raena grinned at her husband and squeezed his hand, before returning her attention to the crowd. “We both miss people here today, but we know they’d be very proud of us. And although they’re not here, they still would want us to celebrate this day and enjoy life - because that’s how they lived as well and why not continue that legacy?” She raised her glass and people up and down the tables did so, too, including Steve. “To life itself, it should be celebrated.”, Bucky said and everyone repeated “To life!” before taking a sip of champagne. Then she leaned forward to light a candle. Steve could see that it had a poem on it and a few pictures. Bucky’s parents at their wedding day and Raena’s dad.
“As you may have noticed”, Raene said then, standing straight up again, facing the crowd, “we set up a guest book, but it’s not just for you to write in it. There also is a polaroid camera and we kindly ask you to take a picture and glue it in, so we never forget how lovely you all looked today.”, while pointing towards the outer area.
Cheers and laughter could be heard through the crowd and Steve noticed how happy everyone looked - it was not only Bucky and Raena, it was everyone. Their happiness spread out over everyone attending. “Also, we have a big bottle prepared for you and if you have any messages and wishes for us, for our future, please write them down and put them the bottle.”
When they sat down again, people started to clap. Steve grinned at his best friend and leaned back. He took a moment to take in the whole scene.
Fairy lights were spread out underneath the baldachin, the tent that protected them from the sun, and around the posts that held it up. On the white table cloths, spread out all over the tables, lay self-made candy that looked like sea glass, in all shades of purple and blue imaginable. There were white candles and bouquets of lavender and roses, all held in a soft, bright purple and white. Shells decorated the tables as well and big candles were positioned around the posts.
While he was observing the guests chatting and waiters serving coffee and tea, his gaze fell upon Olivia. She sat in her corner and prepared the face paint. As if she had noticed him staring, she looked up and shot him a smile. It was a pretty smile and it threw Steve off a bit. He needed longer than usual to smile back and when he finally made his mouth do what he wanted his brain to do, Olivia was already busy again, as one of the kids ran up to her and started a conversation, gesturing towards the books.
Steve sighed and turned towards Bucky. A waitress put a plate with tiny purple cupcakes on the table and closer to the kitchen Steve could see two other waiters rolling in the cake.
It was a beautiful three-story cake, white icing and decorative purple shells. “Oooh”s and “aah”s could be heard from the guests as Bucky reached for Rae’s hand and they made their way to cut the cake together.
After everyone had had a piece of the wedding cake, people started to take the first pictures with the polaroid camera and Steve also saw Rae’s mother place the first message in the bottle, writing down good wishes for her daughter and her new son-in-law.
Bucky and Raena themselves, sitting next to each other, whispering with the other, getting occasionally visited by children who had the most fantastic face paint Steve had ever seen, being photographed and chatted with guests, radiated such happiness that Steve felt his heart ache from the love he saw.
He wished he could have something similar in his life as well.
“Oh I love how she does it”, he heard Raena say and reality had him again. Steve looked at the kid, it was the one with the suspenders, who had a full face-paint. It was a Spider Man mask.
Steve chuckled. “Peter would love it, what do you think, Buck?” Bucky sighed as Steve mentioned the kid from Queens. They had never got along too well, but Steve found that the kid in the suspenders looked just like Peter when he ran off, pretending to shoot webs from his wrists.
“They will look great on the pictures.”, Bucky said and Raena nodded. Steve looked over to Olivia, who was reading a story to a couple of kids sitting on her blanket, their mouths hanging open.
“She’s a great story teller.”, Raena said. She was suddenly standing behind Steve, following his gaze. “I’m glad she came. Her boyfriend of five years left her two days ago? She called me crying last night, reassuring me that she’d still be here.”
He swallowed and nodded. “She’s a good friend then?”
“The best.”, Raena mumbled, just as Bucky grabbed her hand and pulled her away, whispering something in her ear that made her giggle. Steve turned around again on his chair. Everyone was chatting happily with each other while the dinner was prepared. The kids had someone to play, the adults had alcohol and the band was just setting up.
Dinner was served without severe incidents other than a couple of broken glasses. Steve suspected the bridesmaids-table but was never able to prove it. With a full stomach and the alcohol flowing, the atmosphere was even better than before. Bucky chatted with his wife, who laughed at his jokes and every now and then shot a glance at her wedding ring shining in the light of the candles. It would soon be time for his speech, he should prepare.
Standing up, Steve crossed the room, not without being called to a few tables by some of Raena’s bridesmaids. Gesturing towards the lavatories, he shrugged and excused himself with a smile. The girls pouted, but he could imagine it would not be their last approach this evening.
The restrooms were connected to the kitchen, the only two real rooms in the airy wedding set up, by a corridor, light up by candles and even more fairy lights. He had prepared the speech ages ago. He knew it by heart. He was just making sure he had the right tempo, the right tone. Mumbling to himself he didn’t notice the woman coming out of the women’s restroom - and he ran straight into her. It was Olivia, who had glitter all over her light blue dress and some even in her hair.
“Oh, I’m terribly sorry.”, Steve said in the same moment Olivia said: “Ah, sorry!” Steve had held onto her but let go of her arms now.
“Oh”, Olivia said and pointed at his shirt. “I was trying to get rid of a bit of it, but I think I infected you. Sorry again.”
Frowning Steve looked down at his shirt, and true. There now was a lot more glitter on there now than there had been before, which made him smile. “It’s alright. It’ll make me shine even more for my big speech in a few minutes.”, he commented and she laughed.
“I’m sure it’ll help you get through it. If not, you need to hear this trick.”, she looked around, as if someone would watch them, and then leaned in closer: “You need to pick one person. One person you know, you like, you can bear to look at for the time being. It helps. Look around every now and then, but always get back to that person. That way, you can ignore all the others. It’s a tip my..” And her voice broke.
Although it broke his heart, he smiled. “That’s a really good tip. I will make sure to remember it.”
She caught herself quickly and nodded, a shy smile on her lips. Then she excused himself and walked back to her little kid’s corner where the children were waiting for her excitedly. Nothing was left of the sadness that had shone through her like a light when she had nearly mentioned, and here Steve was only guessing, her ex-boyfriend. She was picking up the book again, flicking through the pages, telling a story, using her whole body. Gesturing with her hands, pulling faces and leaning for- or backwards.
“Steve, it’s time.”, a voice called him back to reality and for the second time that evening he had found himself staring at a girl he’d only met. Bucky pulled his arm back towards the tables and he nodded. “I’m coming, I’m right here.”
“Ladies and gentlemen, it is my greatest pleasure to announce that this wedding finally happened.” Laughter. “I mean, it was a long and rough road, but we made it. They made it!” Everyone had their heads turned towards Steve. Nobody wanted to miss out on the speech given by the best man.
“At some stages I thought we’d never make it. But here we are. Mr and Mrs James Buchanan Barnes, everyone.” The crowd cheered and raised their glasses. “But let’s be honest - I never thought Bucky would marry anyone. Back in the olden days, I thought we would end up getting married because we were inseparable.” Again, laughter.
And then he found her face. She stood in the door leading towards the kitchen and watched him. Steve couldn’t help but flash her a smile. And then suddenly her trick made sense. The rest of the speech, he never worried about where to look to, because he always had a safe spot to return to.
“When they met and Bucky told me about Raena, I thought: uh-oh, he’s found someone just as stubborn as himself. And he’s crazy about her. Rough times ahead. But let’s face it. Good things take their time and coal needs to be put under pressure to become a diamond and with some relationships it’s just the same.” He looked at Olivia again, who wiped her eyes and he instantly felt bad. But this needed to wait. He had one more line to say: “Without any further ado, please raise your glasses for Mr and Mrs Barnes and prepare for their official first dance.”
“Hear, hear!” Everyone toasted towards the table where Bucky and Raena were sitting, just as the band got on stage and did some last minute tuning on the bass and the guitar. Accompanied by applause Bucky and Rae got up and made their way to the dancefloor.
The band started playing slowly as Bucky places his hand around Rae’s waist and they started dancing to a song called Amazed. The lyrics fit the scene perfectly. Above them, the sky had turned black and stars were shining through the baldachin and the moon hung over the ocean in a white sickle.
Everything was perfect.
Steve sidestepped around the bridesmaids and made his way to the kid’s corner. Olivia stood there, arms crossed before her chest, watching bride and groom kissing each other as the song ended. Everyone applauded and the dance floor quickly became crowded.
“Hey”, Steve said and suddenly felt like an idiot. “Eh, your tip helped me get through the speech. It was really useful.”
“Well”, she said and looked at him. Her eyes looked tired, but she smiled, “you chose a great target, so of course it went well.” She winked at him and the both laughed. She loosened her arms up and leaned on the door frame. “It was a really good speech though.” This time, her smile was genuine.
“Thank you”, Steve said and also turned towards the dance floor. “So, what do you think, how much longer will you have to hold out here in the kid’s corner?”
“Oh, not much longer I think. Two of the kids are asleep already, two others are running around outside, high on sugar and don’t tell Rae, but one of the little girls has puked all over her dress and now needs to be taken home by her dad.”
Steve chuckled. “Means you’re basically free?”
“Yeah, why?”
“Dance with me.”, he said and held out his hand, indicating a little bow.
The emotions on Olivia’s face were hard to read because she went from surprised to flattered and then shut them all out, her face being a blank mask.
“I am sorry, Steve. I can’t.”, she said and crossed her arms again. Steve lowered his hand. He now could see more glitter on her dress and a little bit of colour on the hem of her dress. It looked like the Spider Man blue.
“Ah, come on. Rae told me what-”
“Good. And did she also tell you that I don’t need no pity from anyone? I’m fine.”, the last word only was a hiss and as soon as she had said it, her mask broke and Steve saw all the sadness, all the heartbreak that she carried around with herself. He didn’t meant to insult or hurt her.
“And… if I ask nicely?”, he said again and caught her eyes. “This is not me pitying you and I am sorry if I came off as rude or belittled your experiences, your feelings. I just… want you to have a good night. To have some fun. To dance with me and forget about idiots and puking kids for a while. After all, we could all do with some happy memories when times get bad again, mh?”
He looked at her and she seemed to understand. She seemed to fathom what he meant when he said it - that it wasn’t only about her. That he’d been through similar situations already.
“Alright”, she said and took his hand. “Let’s make some good memories for when times get tough again.”
And they did.
They danced practically the whole evening, laughing and spinning around, overwhelmed by the sheer presence of the other and the endorphins their company seemed to spark in them. They talked and sung along to silly songs, chatted and laughed some more. It was easy being around her. Steve had a definitely made a couple of good memories to hold on to.
They were sitting in the sand, watching the waves kiss the shore, again and again and again. The moon was hiding behind white clouds and the stars were trying their best to shine through the clouds that started to cover up the night sky. Olivia was wearing Steve’s jacket, a glass in her hand. It was late and she yawned.
“I should get going”, she said and Steve blinked confused. He did not want her to leave, but the second this thought crossed his mind he knew that he had to - if he wanted to see her again.
“It was a lovely night, thanks, Steve.”, she said and kissed him on the cheek. “I will simply take the jacket with me and you can come and pick it up tomorrow. Maybe I’ll be able to paint your face then, since we haven’t gotten around to do it today.”
“I’d love to.”, Steve grinned widely and then watched her leave, his heart full of a night he wouldn’t forget that quickly.
For the Love of Photography | bucky barnes x tony stark
Prompt: Phantomas67′s Winteriron Bingo - Square 1 - Advertisement Pairing: Tony Stark x Bucky Barnes Warnings: Emotions, photography, exhibitions, some tears, fluff Words: 1920 A/N: This is my first bingo fill, so I hope I did okay!
AO3 | REQUEST
Getting out of the car, they were immediately blinded by flashing lights as they held hands and sifted through the crowd of cameras with ease. Looking towards Tony with a smirk once they had stepped inside, he looked towards his partner, "Usually I'm the one with the camera."
“Usually I’m the main attraction, not today - that one goes to you babe.”
With a smile on his face, the two entered the room where Tony was the first person to officially view Bucky’s exhibition.
He had the advertisement that showed the time and place for Bucky’s exhibition held tightly in his hand, though he was trying not to crinkle it. Even though he knew Bucky could get a new one without hassle. It was only a small, about half the size of an A4 paper, it was a light pink colour with one of Bucky’s pictures from the exhibition on the front. It was a standard portrait of a woman's face, but there was a way that Bucky had left in the imperfections and the expression in her eyes that really sold it. There were, of course, other things on it like a little doodle of white leaves in the corner, but they weren’t all that important anymore. Not when he was standing in the middle of Bucky’s hard work.
Tony let go of the metal hand, the advertisement still in his hand as he started to walk slowly through the exhibition, taking in the overall imagery and feel before taking a closer look at each individual section. Most of the photos were just photos of peoples faces, pure and raw and Tony then noticed a few sneaky pictures that Bucky had taken of Tony when he was unaware.
Continuing to walk along the walls without Bucky by his side, Tony was starting to get overwhelmed with emotion as he realised that the theme of his exhibition was love and misfortune, something that the two had shared a lot of together. Some stories were so mixed that it was hard to tell whether it was one or the other, but it was very easy to see that every single photograph was raw, none of it was fake. Something Tony knew Bucky took a lot of pride in.
Tony started reading through some of the interview answers and his heart melted.
What's one thing you wish you could tell your partner?
That even when I can't say that I love them, I love them. It's hard for me to express emotion with everything I've faced in life and I just want her to know that she's my world. I know it’s something that she struggles with, and I’m grateful every day that she stays by my side, but some days it’s harder to say than others.
Are you happy in your current relationship?
Sometimes I'm more happy than other times. Relationships, to me, prove their strength by sorting through everything messed up and coming out alive and together. I believe that no relationship is perfect and there will always be obstacles, no matter what they are. No one is ever perfectly content in anything, and if they are, they’re lying.
Tony took extra time to study each expression in the photos. He hadn't any idea that Bucky's exhibition would be as moving as it was, though he knew that Bucky had struggled with his own emotions a bit during the process of creating it. One time, after an interview that was particularly rough, Bucky had walked into their home with tears in his eyes and had just held Tony, telling him that he was loved.
Bucky had been dabbling in photography for almost his whole life, never really taking it seriously until a few years ago. His best friend Steve had always been the one interested in photography and exploring different viewpoints, trying to see things how others would. Eventually his love for photography led to painting, which he was still doing now. Some of his works placed strategically around Bucky’s exhibition with full credit as sneak peaks for Steve's future exhibition in the same place.
What had really gotten Bucky into photography, though, was coming back from the war, down one arm and trying to explain just how he viewed different things now, not able to explain his emotions so freely when he felt too many things to place in one specific category or feeling.
When even therapy hadn’t worked completely he had picked up a camera and managed to take a somewhat awkward picture of the sky and a mountain on a gloomy day, travelling for a bit which helped to clear his mind and give him some peace. He then waited until a sunny day when his friends went to the beach, snapping a photo of everyone having fun and laughing, smiling down at the moment he had captured.
When he had gone to therapy next, he hadn’t tried to talk about his feelings at any length. Knowing that would only make him frustrated and talk about his feelings of anger, rather than the others, he merely pulled out printed versions of the pictures he had taken and said, “Most days I feel like this one, grey, gloomy, uninterested with no hope. People want me to be like this, laughing, happy, vibrant, when I can’t be and it makes me feel like the skies are getting even greyer.”
It hadn’t been much of a big deal for him to say aloud. With the help of the pictures, he could easily connect the parts to himself without really having to think much about it. His therapist had merely smiled at him and told him that maybe he should look into turning photography into a hobby, suggesting that if he was feeling a certain mood, but not understanding it, he could go look for places where he might capture what explained, to him if no one else, just what he was feeling.
Listening to that advice had been hard at first, even with one arm, but he managed to take better photos and soon photos that explained his feelings turned into things he found memorable, and in no time it was simply passion that drove him to taking photos.
He had soon met Tony through getting his prosthetic arm and soon meetings about the arm and checking up on the arm to see how it was working and if it needed anything extra turned into dates and spending more and more time together, inevitably falling in love.
Their relationship was nothing without it’s hardships though, but with every fight, every time Bucky fell into his shell and refused to come out or when Tony was spending too much time working, they continued to grow stronger and love each other more and more fiercely.
They were also nothing without the help of their friends though and Tony smiled when he moved on to another part that was focused on platonic love. It featured their own friends talking about each other, along with lifelong friends and new friends that Bucky had found along the way. Tony couldn’t help the grin getting bigger as he continued to read along, finding himself relieved in the fact that instead of focusing on just romantic love, Bucky had focused on it all. He knew they were nothing without the love of their friends and Bucky knew that too.
There was also quite a large television in the middle of the room and looking closer Tony could see it was playing different sections of the interviews, Bucky mentioning it was parts that hadn't quite made the photographs but he thought still deserved a place in the exhibition as he noticed Tony taking a closer look at what it was showing.
Moving along to the last section it was completely full with photos of Tony and Bucky throughout their time together, whether they were alone or they were together. He noted some from lazy days, or when they had been out on dates. Tony’s mouth twitched when he noticed some from when they had some fights. The subtle location and pictures of Tony slouched over a couch, hands pulling at his hair made him go a bit misty eyed for a moment. The point of the exhibition definitely came across even in just the section about them. Each photo, no matter what mood they were in or what they were doing, showcasing real, raw emotion.
Tony walked back to Bucky then, who was standing in the same place as Tony had left him, and smiled as he stood directly in front of him, taking both of his hands in his own, "I love it, so much."
"I'm glad you do, you inspired me the most." Tony blushed lightly and looked down towards the ground before looking up at Bucky with a bigger smile, "You're such a sap."
Bucky let out a soft chuckle and leaned forward, whispering, "It's because I love you” before he kissed Tony. There was no hesitation in Tony’s actions as he placed his hand on the back of Bucky’s neck and held him closer before pulling away from the kiss and resting their foreheads together, "I love you."
They stayed standing for a few more moments before Tony pulled away, tears in his eyes and a wider grin on his face. He clapped his hands, “Right! Shall we open this to the public?”
“All for nothing if we didn’t.”
They started walking towards the door and Bucky gripped Tony’s hand in his own - flesh on flesh as they opened the door to the crowd waiting to get in.
LOVE, PAIN, AND A WHOLE LOT OF TEARS
as we all know, the up and coming photographer James Barnes has opened his first public exhibition to the this week after releasing teasers in the past few months about what it would hold and a few select images that didn’t reveal all that much.
many were interested in going and on the night more people than expected showed up to the opening night to really see what the fuss was about and whether it lived up to expectations - and to put it short, it exceeded expectations further than any of us could have guessed.
being an art critic for many-a years now, we see that the theme of "love" has been overused in every sense possible, yet just when we thought we'd seen it all and would rather die than go to another exhibition about love, Barnes has successfully pulled us all to our senses and shown us what love is really about rather than our hollywood expectations with his theme of "love and misfortune."
with interviews from everyday normal people, along with his own take on love in his relationship with one Tony Stark - something and someone that is focused on greatly, we get a massive sense of rawness and reality, a big relief and something dearly missed to this critic after years of false expectations of love.
I mustn't say more and ruin it for those who haven't yet been or seen pictures floating online, but i for one would rate this exhibition a firm five stars.
I haven't seen a whole group of people moved to tears so quickly in my entire life, and the tears were still fresh on cheeks even as some left.
we wish Mr. Barnes much luck with his future and look forward to seeing what he does next and what he does with it.
