hymnheart birds, better known as "hymns", or "travel mount" birds, are a genus of bird derivative from todays common flocking birds of sky (doves), and the less common nightbirds.

during the days of prosperity, these birds were bred to be large and capable of carrying many passengers, as skypeople flight was not a common form of travel. similarly, it wasnt uncommon to find a smaller version of these birds (usually bred by hand, and not by known breeders), meant for single person travel, that was also often used in racing. these lesser travel mounts are known to have sparked the use of mantas for racing and speedy travel, as mantas were faster and smaller, and functionally better for the same uses.

in modern day, these birds are considered to be extinct. after great technological advantages like flying boats becoming mainstream, and soon after the modernization of 'caped' flight, hymns numbers had begun to dwindle due to simply no longer needing them for their main purpose. unlike hymn travel however, manta riding remained persistent as a practice, as the species was abundant, and did not need skypeople aid to continue to breed.

few individuals, like those of the nester families, continued to breed these birds, but eventually discontinued the practice as it became laborious and took too much time.

so we (and by we, i mean the very specific overlap of jews and nerds among whom i make my home) talk a lot about how tolkien's dwarves, in both the books and movies, were likely influenced by certain jewish stereotypes. obsessed with gold/wealth, secretive (especially about their language and religion), refugees from their ancestral home, portrayed with big, sometimes hooked, noses and interesting facial hair, and most specifically: the favourite little meow meows of one particular god, causing them to be shunned and persecuted by other races and creeds. this is likely unintentional, coming from the subconscious of tolkien in the same way orcs were "based on mongols" (ew colonialism) and activating subconscious biases/stereotypes in the people who designed the dwarves for the movies. it's subtext, albeit subtext that influenced the next eighty years of fantasy.

but what i don't see much discussion of is the fact that in terry pratchett's discworld, it's intentional. terry pratchett's dwarves are, more or less, jews.

carrot is a human adopted by dwarves, based on human standards. but within dwarf culture, he IS a dwarf. specifically, he has undergone specific rituals and memorised certain passages, making him LEGALLY a dwarf. this is basically how conversion works in judaism. indeed, as in judaism, it's considered rude to even mention that carrot is six feet tall and obviously wasn't born into the culture he has adopted.

the dwarves also have internal rifts - there are a group of 'orthodox' dwarves who consider the dwarves in ankh-morpork (who have adopted other customs and don't follow traditional roles) not to be dwarves at all, and don't recognise carrot as a dwarf for the same reason. they believe that the way to be a dwarf is to live in an all-dwarf community and follow their traditional rules, while other dwarves believe they need to change with the times and integrate (at least somewhat) with larger society. jewish as fuck.

there's also the interaction of dwarves with gender. when cherie comes out as female (which isn't a recognised gender by dwarvish society) she is ostracised for taking on the feminine roles common to other discworld races. however, she could never THINK of cutting off her beard, because she is still a dwarf. i see parallels with women in judaism taking on roles traditionally considered 'masculine' (e.g., as rabbis, wearing tallit and kippot) and the acceptance of queer people into jewish communities. there's lots of great discussion about cherie as a trans character on tumblr, btw.

finally, something that particularly strikes me is the line from carrot in tfe, where he says that the biggest dwarf city on the disc is ankh-morpork. obviously all diaspora communities can relate, but it's really something to know that new york is the city with the most jews in the world (960k to jerusalem's 570k. btw, 3rd is LA!).

i just love that, again, consciously or unconsciously, pratchett incorporated more positive elements of jewish culture into his portrayal of the dwarves.

lazy afternoon spent in rafayel's studio with sun streaming through the open windows and seagulls crying outside. rafayel is supposed to be working but instead scrolls idly through emails on his phone, making scalding remarks about the most obnoxious ones just to make you laugh. splayed on the couch with your legs on his lap, one hand loosely wrapped around your ankle. you're trying to read, but he distracts you every other minute because he wants you looking at him and is that book really so interesting?? unbelievable. you should just give up and come closer, since no one gets their work done anyway he has a few ideas on how to spend your time instead

solanum: quantum moon motif!! she’s intended to be mostly monochrome (even tho the colour filters I used make her look purple) and purple eyes + clothes bc eye of the universe yknow yknow, and the swirly patterns on her clothes are how I draw clouds but my friend said they also look like the nomai writing which yes!! totally intentional awesome double meaning LOL :> and the circle glasses bc people keep giving her them and it’s adorable ignore the fact that 3/4 designs have glasses IT SUITS THEM ALL OK

poke: yes!! asymmetrical design!! since I based her off the white/black holes since she’s the one who recreated the warp cores yknow yknow AND the icy blue eyes… ice….. interloper…..ehehehehehe >:) also the pattern on her clothes is the pattern on the glass on the advanced warp core!! same with pye

also the matching warp core earrings with pye I thought I was sooooo clever for that one I love yuri

pye: admittedly for these last two I did not have as many ideas as the first two BUT I did kind of want her to have a vaguely mad scientist vibe? hence the big kinda messy ponytail and cracked glasses and also green… bc ghost matter….ehehehehehe

idaea: sadly I had even LESS ideas for him but im still happy with the design!! my main ideas were making him look very neat/collected and have a sun station motif… the pattern on this clothes are the patterns from gravity tiles!!

Hi! I’m a big fan of both the Lackadaisy comic and animated series, but I am a little concerned about the character of Rocky. I’ve noticed that you art of him tends to be mean spirited, I understand if cruelty in your art is your personal taste but is it possible to make some not mean art of him? I don’t mean to come off as rude or aggressive but could you, if possible, have your art of Rocky be more happy and not cruel? Anyways I love the series and I am excited for the future!
