it had been an especially long day, but at last your front door is in sight, and you practically run up the driveway, surprised to find the door unlocked. had you forgotten to lock it on your way out this morning?

with slight hesitation you step in, but any tension is dashed when you hear the hiss of a sizzling pan from the kitchen. with a gentle smile you close the door quietly, keen not to disturb whatever was unfolding around the corner.

you set your bag and keys down on the hallway console table and kick off your shoes to aid your sneaking. as you draw closer to the kitchen door, you realise you hear voices. well, a voice. it's your husband, reiner, talking to someone. is he on the phone? the metallic clanging of utensils and pans makes you wince slightly; he never was the greatest cook, what on earth is he doing?

you reach the doorway and slowly peek in so as not to alarm him, and that's when you see him. he's standing over the stove, grey sweats and old t-shirt just starting to show signs of sweat beneath your cooking apron. he's stirring away at something in a frying pan, right beside mochi, who's perching on the counter beside him.

"c'mon, she's gonna love it," he says, reaching for the salt but careful not to disturb mochi too much.

"I promise you can have some when it's finished."

mochi watches intently, and even paws at reiner's arm ever so gently. he looks down at the needy feline, and you see his shoulders visibly drop. he falls still and quiet, save for the sizzle of the frying pan and low hum of the radio.

"fine."

he says it almost defeatedly, but when he fetches a scrap of bacon from the pan, his glee is palpable.

"don't tell her," he whispers, booping mochi on the nose. taking it as your cue, you clear your throat. the two of them turn to look at you suddenly, both looking as guilty as each other.

"you're home early," reiner says, genuinely spooked.

"so are you," you reply, "what are you doing?"

he glances down to mochi, as if to make sure their pact of secrecy was still in tact.

"uh... you hungry?"
