I am so, so sorry. 697 words, Coffee Shop AU, strangers to lovers, first date

She settles into a window seat with her laptop and cup. The steam from it rises into the sunlight, tinted aqua by the sheer curtains, and curls on invisible currents. There’s not too much chatter for 10:00 am, but it’s the perfect amount of background noise as she opens up her email and gets to work reviewing all her notes for the latest client.

There’s just the basic information so far. She’d only questioned the client yesterday, so now it’ll be on to finding witnesses. Standard break-in. Curiously, only an expensive watch was missing. The safe in the bedroom was never touched, nor were any of the artisan vases on the mantle.

“It was a gift from my past marriage,” the client had said. She’s got one guess off the bat of what happened to the watch. Wife, watch, garbage truck. But saying so on nothing more than a well-experienced but still-unfounded prediction is bad detective work, so here she is poring over the documents.

She’s just finished rereading the client’s testimony when there’s a commotion at the front counter. A woman stands there, coffee in one hand outstretched, lid in the other as she waves it angrily. Her voice grows louder the more incensed she gets, and soon every word out of her mouth can be clearly heard by everyone in the room. The poor barista is new and looks terrified.

When it’s clear the woman is not going to stop her tirade any time soon, she gets up to go help the barista. Someone else seems to have the same idea, as another woman joins her on the way up to the counter.

“Hey, what’s up with your coffee?” she asks.

The yelling woman pauses for just a second, then turns and starts up again.

“I ordered a venti macchiato with oat milk and this is NOT a venti,” she rants.

The woman who also walked up is unimpressed, but waits for the yelling woman to pause to breathe before speaking. “They switched to different cups last week,” she says coolly. “That’s the new venti cup.”

Venti Macchiato looks down at her cup, then back to Cool Woman, caught off guard.

Cool Woman just raises an eyebrow.

“Well, a warning or something would’ve been nice,” Venti Macchiato snips, and then she turns on her heel and walks out.

“Are you alright?” Cool Woman immediately turns to the barista and asks.

“Fine, fine, thank you,” she says. “Can I get you something? On the house.”

Cool Woman hums. “How about one of those muffins?”

As the barista gets the muffin for Cool Woman, she heads back to her seat at the window. On to the evidence. No broken locks, no broken windows. The wife is looking ever more suspect.

“This muffin is huge. Want to share it?” Cool Woman sets the plate on her table with a smile. She’s beautiful, sitting in the soft blue light.

“I’d love to.” She sets her laptop aside and picks off a piece. It’s banana. Not her favorite, but it’s a small price to pay for having this stranger at her table.

“Nothing like being screamed at to start off your morning, yeah?” Cool Woman says wryly.

“It’s a cup, you know? No need to get all up and arms about it. Maybe try politely asking for a new one, or just drinking it,” she rambles.

Cool Woman is just as cool as she seems. As noon approaches, they talk about their jobs (attorney and private investigator. How similar) and find their love for video games in common. She finds that she could sit there all day just talking, but she realizes she has a witness appointment in half an hour, and it takes 20 minutes to get there.

“I’m really sorry, I have to go to an appointment,” she says as she stashes her laptop in her bag.

Cool Woman smiles. “No problem. Hey, maybe we could get lunch some other time.”

She nods and scrambles for her notebook, scribbles her phone number down, and holds it out. “I’d like that.”

“Hey, wait!” Cool Woman calls.

She turns.

“I never got your name.”

re-reading this current arc, there's a moment that caught my eye. in pt. 2 of moon 256(?), darkstone says to honeysong something along the lines of 'you're lucky you get to be here [ in the glow cave ], most warriors don't get the chance too'. which reminded me how the ( canon ) Clans as a whole lost the tradition of apprentices traveling/visiting the moonstone when they left the forest territories. there's a whole article about this 'lost tradition' on the warrior's website ( i only know this because i googled it to fact check, lmaoo ). and in that article, it describes why it was important - mainly to reinforce awe in starclan and their warrior ancestors - and so that apprentices get a chance to travel beyond their Clan and interact with non-Clan cats.

i find this really interesting; especially when crafting my own lore + traditions. so i want to wonder with you, would fallenclan have followed this tradition? would scorchstar have ever enforced this ( would her mother have told this tradition among her tales of the Clans )? or would another leader/cat have done so? would anything change lore-wise if fallenclan/other clans did this tradition?

on a side note, something really nostalgic to me is when leaders would seek guidance from the moon-stone. have any leaders gone to the glow cave by themselves or with others to seek guidance with the stars? i feel like maplestar would have, with silverbelly. <3

good question!!! to be honest, this isn't something I've given a lot of thought to, but I think generally it's just the medicine cats that speak to Starclan--the leaders get to as well, but it's only when they receive their lives that they do so. if they really need to ask Starclan for guidance, the medicine cat does so on their behalf, though it isn't a common thing. Starclan really is just a bunch of dead cats, they aren't all-knowing, but sometimes they do get stuff that they'll pass along--warnings in the form of omens, etc. They have their own lives in Starclan and they aren't there solely to help out the living.

If it was a practice in Boughclan/Tuftclan, Scorchstar didn't know about it. Apprentices probably don't go to speak to Starclan--unless they sneak out to do so, which is possible but not really likely, as it's. I don't want to say Taboo to speak to Starclan without permission, but Frowned Upon maybe? like I said, I haven't thought about this much at all, I probably should get on that XD

I really really enjoy ageswap AUs and would love to take a crack at one myself honestly. It's fun seeing different ideas and takes on things, and I like seeing kid Reigen being a little shit. So I keep thinking about how Serizawa in canon is essentially what Shigeo would be like had he not had Reigen to help him out as a kid, and so in an ageswap au I can see Shigeo ending up a hikikomori, never leaving his room/apartment for anything other than perhaps the barest necessities.

Perhaps one time on a short, midnight run to the local 24/7 convenience store to stock up on food for the next few weeks, Shigeo sees something, just close enough to notice the movement out of the corner of his eye. Some kid with a mop of blond hair turned a dull silver in the pale moonlight and luminescent street lamps lurking around alleyways armed with a bag of salt, saying something about melting evil spirits.

It's an odd sight, but it's none of his business. He wasn't expecting anyone out at this hour, which is why he went out for food at this time, so he moves to leave, just go back home and not go out for the next long, long while.

And then an actual evil spirit shows up, making Shigeo's hair stand on end from the sudden burst of spiritual energy, and the kid makes a startled noise that catches his attention. There's not a lick of psychic energy in that kid, and there's a rather nasty spirit looming over him. It's not like Shigeo can just leave him be, the table salt the kid is violently throwing isn't even doing anything. He could get hurt.

The spirit ends up exorcized, perhaps a bit more explosively than Shigeo would have liked but it's been a long time since he used his powers. Of course this catches the kid's attention, and when said kid turns around to notice this haggard looking man in pajamas at 1 AM with convenience store bags and standing near the entrance to a sketchy alleyway the kid decides that clearly the best course of action is to run directly up to him and start chattering about "Did you do that?! Are you a psychic?!" Shigeo tries making a run for it but this is a man who barely leaves his apartment and hasn't exercised since he was like 13 or 14 for PE classes so the kid catches up embarrassingly quickly.

The kid enthusiastically introduces himself as Reigen Arataka; Rising Star of the Psychic World and soon to be Greatest Psychic of the 21st Century. The kid, Reigen, goes on and on about how he was looking around for an evil spirit he's heard about from classmates at Salt Middle and from gossiping housewives he's passed by, and obviously since spirits are more active at night it's a great idea to go looking then.

And since Shigeo's a psychic, that means he has to teach this kid how to use psychic powers. Obviously.

Shigeo is not thrilled at the idea. Using his powers right then was a one time deal and he's not going to use them ever again because he'll explode and hurt everyone and-

But Reigen's not going to take no for an answer, he gives Shigeo a card for a sketchy looking business called Spirits & Such, run by one Kurata Tome. Reigen says that's where he's working after school and on weekends, and that he'll be taking Shigeo there the next day. Somehow, Reigen manages to get Shigeo's name and address from him before prancing off into the night like it's a totally normal thing for a what, 13?? year old to be doing. Shigeo goes home for the night, that was way too much interaction for him for the next decade. And it's not like that kid will actually remember this and show up at his apartment, right?

Shigeo wakes up to insistent rings of the doorbell some time in the afternoon, and he's content to just not answer but damn that is loud and persistent and just wont stop ringing so he begrudgingly cracks the door open to find Reigen in all his like 5'1" glory ready to drag Shigeo out of his apartment and to Spirits & Such, calling him Shishou all the while.

So it turns out this Kurata person recognizes his name as that kid who refused to join her Telepathy Club in Middle School, which is awkward. Shigeo's not quite sure how he got here, getting a job and a makeover even (Kurata insisted she cut his hair rather than let Reigen handle the scissors) but Reigen's persistent enough that he finds himself falling more into a routine working at S&S, and it's... it's nice, actually. He's finding his anxieties quelling and himself relaxing more, and talking with Kurata and Reigen isn't all that bad. He's getting himself back on his feet. Reigen is impressive with how he speaks with customers and a part of Shigeo wishes he could do that, wishes he could speak so clearly and understand people so easily. He's working on it, bit by bit.

And then he finds himself questioning his life choices because of a spirit haunting an all-girl's high school, shutting down a cult and gaining a sentient fart cloud as a companion, running into a TV celebrity who happens to also be an esper, and a whole lot of other things go down that leaves Shigeo's head spinning.

Honestly I'm jk because they have that mechafiction thing going on so it's nice to leave it up to imagination but I'm just tickled pink the way you refer to him as tiny or 'comparatively' small. Rather than an actual height, is Dio small compared to the average person or just his super cool and adoring, amazing and loving tall gf Rita? From the mash up drawings I've seen, Dio is always the smallest person on the page :3 I love a confident little man in charge so I adore Dio and Rita and their dynamic <3 The caption about him being in distress because his gf was out of shot in distress had me cracking up lolol

Darlingest anon I cackled SO hard when I got this ask; thank you for being interested in my motorcycle kids!! And you are in luck: Even though I usually don’t get too fussed about how tall characters are, this is the one project I have where I did work out out everybody's heights. If you don't want to know exact answers, I'll just say that Dio is, in fact, Tiny specifically when compared to Rita. He's of pretty average height! Even a little taller than average! She's just QUITE tall.

And if you do want the exact measurements, Dio is 5'5 (and a half)! Rita is 6’3 in her bio body and 6’4 in her mechanical proxy body so next to her he simply looks like a bean rather than a beanpole. AND the rest of the main cast actually ALSO skews quite tall so he just… appears short most of the time. He doesn’t mind! It's rad! His girlfriend is tall and amazing and can lift him up with one arm and he is THRILLED about it.

Rita and Dio are in their late teens in the main part of the story, so it’s possible they both could still grow slightly? They’ve pretty much reached their full adult heights, though; it would be a very minor difference.

5. favorite little detail in a drawing you did

this one was kind of hard to answer because i lean so much more to simplification over 1:1 detail... that said, i really loved these ones!

the bag from the top photo is from here, minato nui on left is from some con-related draws, the ballpoint splatling on right is from a vintage draws compilation!

i just really enjoy drawing little objects and props, and as much as i'm allergic to backgrounds, i hope to overcome that next year because my friends know i love getting obsessed over random objects for a few days...

9. any new art mediums youve tried (or overall styles if you havent tried new mediums)

i haven't gotten to do much mediums outside of digital art unfortunately.... but i would say this year was the year of chibification! i turned so many characters into little guys this year (shoutout to the nui tree!). which is really ironic because i also realized this year i find full illustrations more satisfying to work on throughout the process, despite the "simplicity" of chibis.

i did some limited color styles too! (blue, purple, and red + b/w). hopefully i can do more deliberate color palette stuffs though. i think it'd be a great exercise.

stylistically wise i think i could've tried more, but. its ok! thats what 2024 is for. yipee!

SO many feelings about him omgg rant under cut please forgive me

okay so i don't really talk or draw him much cause honestly,,,most of the times i just think he's a bit....boring? or more accurately plain? not in a mean way either but just in a 'fades into the background' type of way like don't get me wrong!! he's a really nice friend to his peers, his feelings about his powers and aura making his relationships harder to navigate and trust along with his whole conflict with nightmare and morality about what's good and bad IS very cool!! and i love it whenever they write him to be complex and not on this black and white mentality or when he's just straight up following along his friends with no free will or with a dubious purpose without ever addressing his issues or feelings! it's just unsatisfying to me :')

or when they're making him the 'naive' and oblivious, (sometimes childish?) character being marked as the obstacle and villain along with the other star sanses from the fic's pov, always talking about doing good things while fighting his brother and not hearing him out about the balance, (and for weak reasons most of the time. like it's been so long and you STILL haven't sat down with him when he's, generally, basically begged you to just have a talk? guys please :'( ) or when they go for the victim sad dream always missing the old nightmare, where corrupted nightmare is the incarnation of evil, with no sympathy or emotion except anger and sadistic glee, killing and hurting everyone and dream's just trying to protect the multiverse and dream's always been in the right. such extremes!!!

LIKE!! i hope i'm not the only one that thinks a 500+ year old should have had enough time to idk. learn things? about people and manipulation and deceit? after knowing what the villagers did to night? about the bad things in the world and how there's a lot of grey areas in life and that he maybe reflected on his past enough to process and ask himself if there should to be a convo to settle his differences with nightmare (and you can make nightmare the stubborn one too! or have them BOTH be petty and imperfect and have some things wrong and some right at the same time like why do i always see the good guy vs bad guy cliché with these two when they're the perfect example of why positivity doesn't have meaning without the negativity!! as long as there's a satisfying evolution or growth that doesn't leave me empty i'm good yknow?)

plus i believe dream really isn't as dumb as people view him. i do get some of you saying he probably can't read or write since that's actually a pretty interesting idea to explore! but in general please let him have emotions other than pure sunshiny happiness or endless sadness like he's gotta have more depth than that! let him make mistakes, have flaws that don't just make him the bad guy that's always in the wrong by default, and be angry or suspicious or jealous or bitter or battling his mental health problems/depression or malicious or smart or witty or mischievous and silly or sarcastic or ANYTHING dude i just want him to be put into different scenarios where he can be serious or lighthearted like it doesn't even have to be long or perfect but make him feel real.

it could definitely be that i don't read or see much art about dream or really look for it hard enough but also i just. i feel bad for even saying this fr and i wanna be honest about why i don't enjoy most stories about him cause he always gets the worst treatment along with ink!!! especially ink omg the poor guy has it the worst i think like wow do they mess him up :'(

always one dimensional in non shippy fics, or too plain or easily replaceable by other, more entertaining people in the significant other's life in most of his ships like man. i have read fics out there that made me genuinely FEEL and root for him and love his character so much it restored all hope for me!!! but i can only name one on top of my head and the others? it's been so long i don't even remember their names i just legit feel terrible cause i love him still and i can't find many headcanons that fit my interpretation of him yknow?

not to say people who write him very happy, mislead or sad are ruining him like that's silly- if i see something i don't like i just. move on bro i wouldn't force people to feel or think the same way i do about him cause anyone can have whatever headcanons they want!!! just talking about what i personally look for in him and why i can't exactly find it since most of the stuff out there just isn't my cup of tea :')
