So I haven’t done this in literally 2 years. I think I did it once and then just.... didn’t afterwards? But I kind of want to do this throughout summer at least because why the hell not. Let me prove that I actually keep up with the hell hole that is comic books. I’ll only talk about the new comics, but I’ll mention which back issues I picked up. And remember kids! Support your Local Comic Book Shops.
Batman #72: I’ve actually been keeping up with King’s Batman run since the very beginning of Rebirth, surviving many purges I’ve had with my pull list over the past 3 years. It has had its ups and downs for sure, but the story all together is ambitious to say the least. That being said, this entire issue wasn’t anything spectacular, basically a “recap” of what happened in the last 71 issues, narrated by *spoiler*, and explaining to us why each of the storylines happened the way they did all the while we have Bane and Batman fighting in the background sometimes. The art is gorgeous, from both Mikel Janin and Jorge Fornes. Good jumping on point for anyone who hasn’t read his stuff I guess.
The Green Lantern #8: I don’t know if I’ve said this before, my Hal Jordan GL has always been a favorite of mine. I don’t what it is about him, but the whole space cop action hero thing he has going for him really works for me. And with Grant Morrison and Liam Sharp on these books, I can’t buy them fast enough. This whole issue is super fucking weird. It starts out normal enough, with a famous GA/GL team-up, and then evolves into a weird acid trip of an adventure. Definitely evokes the tagline “space junkies” of the issue.
Guardians of the Galaxy Annual 1: Donny Cates broke into my house, woke me up with a pile-drive to the throat, threw the entirety of the Guardian books on top of me, and then spit on me before leaving. I love Cates. He’s one of those writers that can be put on a book, and I’d read it regardless of character. And his run on Guardians has been nothing if not amazing. The annual does a really good job at setting up the next arc, and future arcs to come. And we don’t even see the GotG throughout the entire issue. That’s pretty ballsy. As long as he’s behind the wheel, you can bet you’ll see me posting about my favorite rag-tag team of assholes.
Justice League #25: I was doing really good at keeping up with this book, but after the second arc, I fell off and was only really able to keep up with small parts here and there. I decide to pick it up just so I can 1.) understand the Year of the Villain event and 2.) bask in the glory that is Jorge Jimenez’s art. And let me tell you, Jimenez can draw some of the most beautiful splash pages in the world. If you’ve read this issue, you’ll know what page I’m talking about. Snyder himself is a great writer, and can really write a great Justice League book. Bombastic and ambitious in a different way. I just enjoy it when you know the writers have shit planned and they aren’t just going arc to arc with no destination.
Marvelous X-Men #4: So I was pretty lost throughout this entire issue, mainly due to the fact that I was both not interested in the story and I didn’t read the other previous issues or anything. Completely my fault. The art is good, and from what I did understand, it’s a nice story. The main reason why I picked it up was because Jean and Scott are on the cover, so I thought they would have a bigger part to play in the story. Scott doesn’t. Jean does a lot though, so kudos to her. 3/5
Savage Avengers #2: At first I was reluctant to buy this series, but I was trapped by the art. And honestly? I’m glad I bought it. The story is actually pretty good so far, and the art more than makes up for anything lacking in the story thus far. With only 2 issues into the series, members have only “met” each other, such as Wolverine and Conan, Conan and Venom, and Wolverine and Voodoo. Punisher appears, and elektra is nowhere to be found. It’s a slow burn for the team, with a lot of blood to spill. I can dig it.
Shazam #6: To be honest, not a lot of things happen in this issue. It’s a lot of “big reveals” that are bridged together by the secondary plot. Billy and his father are reunited again, Mary reveals to the parents that they are all superheroes, and it appears that the Wizard is back just in time because Sivana beat Black Adam with Mr. Mind. The others are stuck in the wildlands and they have to save them. I don't know. It’s alright, just not for me.
Uncanny X-Men #19: Rosenberg has crafted an amazing X-Men story, with a couple hiccups along the way. I’ve always been a fan of the X-Men, and this is the first time in a while where I’m actually excited to be reading about my favorite mutants. Emma Frost takes center stage in this issue, and she basically fills the readers in to what she’s been up to since before the start of the series up to now. Long live the Queen.
Young Justice #6: Brian Michael Bendis is definitely doing a long con with this series, revealing things ever so slightly. I just want to know everything right now.  So many things I need to be answered, and I am not that patient of a comic book reader. This issue reveals Superboy, some Tim & Cass, and the basics of Teen Lantern and Jenny Hex. Oh and some of the plot happens. I’m honestly into this series more for the answers of my questions than I am the actual plot. Which I guess isn't a bad thing? Since I’m still picking up this book. But eh.
