okay huge ramble below because I just reread a chapter from a fic I love and need somewhere to rant about it even if no one reads it:

so I don't know if anyone who might read this has read the fic "first love, late spring" by cityboys (on ao3), but if you have then you might know how I feel even just a little bit. this fic is insanely popular among the itafushi fandom and I know that sometimes makes talking about things redundant, but I simply do not care in this instance because when I say it is my favorite itafushi fanfiction, and favorite fanfiction in general I mean it with my whole chest. that doesn't mean that I don't love almost every fic I read; a fic definitely doesn't have to bash me over the head and change my life for it to be one of my favorite stories or an enjoyable read. but this one in particular has stuck with me and means an awful lot to me as a reader. it's a few years old at this point but the story and ways the characters fit together are simply incredible, and my experience of reading it for the first time is something that will probably stay with me for a long, long time.

okay. so. it's not so much the plot I want to talk about but more so the many many many things it makes me feel. literally every time I read so much as a few paragraphs from certain sections I can feel myself tearing up. I've literally sobbed so hard while reading this fic that I was throwing tissues on the floor from how upset I was. and don't get me wrong, I wouldn't change anything in this story for the world (not that I have a say in it of course), but how deeply personal and heart wrenching specific parts were literally made me want to tear my hair out. I guess it's just the itafushi effect who knows😫

and the writing OH MY GOD THE WRITING!! it's beyond incredible, and honestly leaves me a little bit inspired every time I read it, which is always something I love feeling after reading something. also, the ways in which the author made each character think and act toward themselves, toward others... it's so nuanced sometimes that I don't even know how they did it. the conversations some of the characters have and the way that certain worries creep into megumi or yuuji's minds because, at the end of the day, they're human and maybe can't help it, is so accurate and real that sometimes it feels otherworldly. and maybe I'm being dramatic yes, and this is all over a jujutsu kaisen college au fanfiction from 2021, but somehow such a beautiful story came from all of it; something that resonated so deeply with me and became one of my favorite works of all time. honestly it even helped solidify megumi as my favorite character because damn, that poor boy is messy but I love him with everything he is.

I think the last thing I want to touch on is: relationships. how this fic deals with relationships as a concept (with yourself, family, romantic, platonic, a hook up) is so utterly complex but also something that, in our core, everyone can relate to, that I found myself shocked when certain emotions or experiences were spelled out to me in one of the characters' inner monologues. the way that love and relationships were such a tricky part of navigating this story, yet it was seamlessly intertwined time and time again, left my head spinning. I remember making a 6+ minute rant to myself in the kitchen while I was reading it simply because I could not fathom a piece of fiction making me feel this way.

all in all, I don't know what the fuck my fingers just typed out but thank you for reading maybe?? I'm slightly embarrassed cause I’ve barely used this account and this is a crazy strong thing to start off with, but what is this blog for if not my thoughts. and if you haven't read first love, late spring, I'd say give it a go :) at least in my experience, clearly, it's one of those stories that shows just how beautiful and amazing writing fanfiction can be, and how something may be more of an intricate concept at its core than on the surface, but it can still rip you apart and put you back together nonetheless.

I for sure didn't even touch on half of everything I could've spoken about, and this is all very much my opinion and my experience with reading an all time favorite fic of mine, but it was meant mainly for me to cope with crying over it again, 10 months later. please please tell me if you've read it, I would love to know if anyone thinks even remotely the same as me.
