robert & lyanna meta :

recently i’ve been harping on this idea of robert + lyanna = jon . here is why i feel it’s plausible ( & no i’m not naive enough to believe the show will do this nor grrm ) . please remember this is all my own interpretation & reasoning for why i prefer robert / lyanna & why they make more sense to me in terms of their characters .

firstly , we have lyanna . she’s beauty , but also iron . we know she is respected by many because of her role as lady of winterfell due to her mother’s death ( no real definite details on how lyarra died ) . this means she had diplomatic training . so understood the importance of loyalty & alliances between houses . then of course , we know she loved to ride horses & sword fight . in the north this is normal ! if you try to use arya as an example you must remember ned never limited her wildness , it was catelyn ( who is considered a southern house despite being more in the middle ) . women in the north were * not discouraged * to ride & train as any man . lyanna was not forced to fit into a box labeled ‘ proper lady ’ like arya . so you have this fierce , wild , intelligent girl / woman who loved her home , her family , & was well respected . all narrative on her was positive .

secondly , we have robert . he is know to sleep around , and even had an illegitimate child in the vale from his time there with jon arryn & ned . we know he never really felt�� brotherly with his biological brothers ( stannis & renly ) , but ned was the brother he chose . he was close with him & loved him like family . so when he is betrothed to lyanna , this doesn’t just mean he’s getting a wife , but his brother . that’s a minor detail tho , but i feel that plays a part in who robert could have been with lyanna , & for lyanna . as someone who is a frequent womanizer , the betrothal is his first sense of stability . he is the heir to a house , meaning he’d have to grow up pretty soon . for a young man , which he still was , that’s a lot of pressure . so he goes out & drinks too much & sleeps around --- robert had a wild spirit too . but then he is betrothed , i see that as his first sign of stability ; that inheriting storm’s end won’t be so troublesome with lyanna & the starks ( ned ) as family . his dedication , & affection is the first sign you see robert caring about more than himself & his fun .

now , put these two together & you get a girl quite a few years younger than a known womanizer who she is to marry , but she has doubts & worries unaware of his affections developing for her . so yes , she is unsure of marrying him with legitimate fears he’ll lose interest ; with the added ‘ bonus ’ of being nearly a month & week away from her home ( the only place she’d ever feel like she belonged ) . also she’s 14 ? when the betrothal is announced . adult or not by societal standards , she’s still a scared child .

okay , so they are both at the tourney & they spent time together at winterfell . it makes sense they had conversations / got to know each other during this time period ; i’m sure ned also spoke with robert about lyanna’s worries . he wanted them happy as much as they wanted themselves to be happy . so again it makes sense they’d talk about how their relationship would be --- how their wild personalities would mesh . they easily develop feelings for one another . it’s slow at first , but they are there : they both feel like their future won’t be so bad after all --- even if they have issues they are both good people . they begin a sexual relationship because it doesn’t matter if they are to marry anyway . lyanna is pregnant .

when rhaegar shows up to take her to fullfill the prophecy , lyanna doesn’t know she’s pregnant , but she refuses to go . not only does it betray her home , & her family , but also her future husband . yes , lyanna enjoyed rhaegar’s music & thought him handsome like every other girl but he was nearly 10+ years older than her & a prince ( power imbalance hardcore ) . she is taken by rhaegar , forced to marry him , & he forces himself on her to make the third head of his dragon , but she’s already pregnant so he believes she’s impregnated by him despite it truly being robert’s son .

before you say that ruins everything : let me tell you why it all still works .

the song of ice & fire : with rhaegar as the father why need daenerys ? if jon is the ice ( lyanna ) & the fire ( rhaegar ) . . . dany becomes useless in the endgame . with robert as the father , jon fulfills the ice while dany fulfills the fire & they come together to form this epic endgame .

jon as a dragonrider / only a targ : if you know your asoiaf history than you know that house baratheon came from the targaryen line . meaning , despite being diluted , jon would still have targ blood so he could easily still be a dragon rider .

the story could continue on the same way . the story makes more sense this way if you look at who lyanna was . even if robert isn’t the father , lyanna would not have traded one southern lecher for another if she truly felt disdain for robert like that . she was young with worries & the realization she’d be leaving her home . that’s enough to make anyone scared , but not enough to betray everything she was & knew for some married man with children ; because even if she did love rhaegar instead of robert it would be stupid to believe they could live together in peace . she knew politics & she knew that no one would follow a man who stole a woman from another man ( insult both houses ) while degrading his already wife ( insult her house ) . people all around would have felt disrespect --- politically it was dumb & lyanna would know that .

in conclusion , robert + lyanna = jon ♡.
