i’m rewatching start up and it was painfully obvious that dosan and dalmi were endgame. you can’t just play future by red velvet, all while leading up to showing dosan, and not have these two end up together. ifykyk.

ANYWAYS, it’ll be nice to actually enjoy this drama again w/o the ship war drama and the babying of ji-pyeong …which don’t get me wrong, i love him and he’s a great character, but the fandom always made it so hard to enjoy his character while vilifying dosan.

Right now I want to share my favorite K-drama that I’ve watched until now.

Start-up (2020)

yes. this is an old drama. But I am insisting in writing it now because I watched it for the third/fourth time.

I don’t want to write the summary of the drama, because you guys can look for it in wiki. But I want to share what I love about that drama!

the casts! I always love Suzy and Nam joohyuk, and so when I knew they played together in this drama I just couldn’t wait. Their chemistry, their acting, their visual. just wow

the story! You can find anything you want there: comedy, drama, family, romance, career, friendship..

the script! If you read my fanfic that I’ve written in this account, you must know that I love angsty-fluff, with poetic-metaphor- and full of hidden meanings. The words Istg... It’s simple and yet it portrays and adds the emotion to the scene. if I may say, I think it’s the most perfect script I’ve ever watched

Knowledge! just the continuation from the script, i love how this drama also gives us knowledge about start up, business, and AI. It’s fresh

I just love Dosan! many ppl will hate me for this, but I ship dosan and dalmi, not ji pyeong. I love how he decides to help Dalmi, how he falls in love with her immediately, how he feels inferior and not entitled to be with her and yet he wants to (isn’t it the most humane thing?), how he tries his best to be the best for her and makes her dream come true, how he shows his admiration and love in little things he does for her, how heartbroken he looks when he come back to seoul, ARRGH it’s just how it’s not love?

“follow your dream: and my dream is you”. okay, when I write this I just feel dejavu. I think I wrote almost the same thing when I reviewed Go go squid: DT.Appledog’s time. LMAO, maybe I am that hopeless romantic and a love story like this is my favorite. DOSAN’S LOVE IS THAT PURE Y”ALL (cries)

I watched many titles for more than 1 time, and I usually laughs whenever I watched them, even though I know the story. But this drama, that angsty-fluff feeling always hurt my little heart, and not all those drama capable to do it, and I even watched this drama with 1.5 to 2.0 speed. Still tugging my heartstrings

Overall it’s a perfect drama. with realistic topic, pure love, greaaattt script, great chemistry.

9.95/10 - definitely will watch again for the nth times

*p.s. 0.05 point is deducted because how can a coding technician be as buff and handsome as Dosan LOL

just finished watching StartUp and I have so many opinions.

So firstly I genuinely enjoyed the show at most times, it’s a fun watch with humor and good business advice at times. The cast is completely brilliant with a great range onscreen throughout the show, I watched it for seonho but loved the others as well. The set is soo beautiful, sandbox was made with such great aesthetic details. I felt like the writers themselves seemed confused of where they wanted the story to go.

Personally I knew jipyeong would never end up with dalmi because of multiple reason- He waited too long to ever make a move, his affection towards dalmi - I personally felt it was coming from a place of having her safe and not exactly wanting to have a romantic relation with her tbh even though the writers said that he loved her romantically, he second doubted himself too much - and that’s valid for his character considering his story but like dosan he wasn’t really a go getter when it came to his romantic relation w dalmi as quick he was when it came to help her w other things.

I hated the fact that they didn’t dive into his past, showing WHY is it that he was exactly ‘envious’ of dosan and where it came from other than just him being a poor orphan. Jipyeong had SO MUCH potential to become a phenomenal character (even if he didn’t land the romantic relationship) if they had indulged into his backstory and how he overcame problems other than being a poor boy- the behaviour and personality aspects. Jipyeong is someone who’s very selfless and is quiet about how he cares for people and until the end this went unacknowledged by the other characters - yes they acknowledged that he was smart and his opinions were helpful but it didn’t show that they understood why he did what he did because until the end he was shown as an ‘outsider’ to the found family within the startup, even though he saved their asses countless times.

He could’ve had such a sibling-y relationship with dosan and dalmi and it would’ve been so precious to watch and a better ending honestly other than just ending up just as an business partner. Additionally I completely disliked how the samsan guys were such assholes to him professionally- snatching his phone when he’s literally HELPING THEM not screw up and when it all went bad they blamed him for not going easier on them I WAS SOOO PISSED LIKE NO ACCOUNTABILITY AT ALL??? Like JP wasn’t on the position just like that easily and the show failed to recognise that the position he was in didn’t come to him just because he was smart - that it must’ve taken a lot of work and dedication, just to be mocked by three childish boys who couldn’t take criticism when it was being given to them. I agree that Jp could’ve been less mean and he didn’t have a whole development arc wrt that but man that’s how how the real world works - imagine u just opened a business and have no idea how it works and u cuss out ur mentor who’s giving his everything ing to help u - if something like that happened irl they would’ve been screwed so bad and this is not even coming from a place where I’m being biased towards JP. I liked that dalmi went against him at times when it was necessary, that showed the depth within her character as a CEO and as a person who doesn’t take a no when she can prove to make things happen. That’s amazing. But the dosan and JP fight was so useless cuz nothing came out of it. (They could’ve been besties instead like ����)

Anyway yes I did enjoy the other aspects so much, definitely one of the watches I’ll remember for a long time and I will come back to it again and again.

Okay see I haven't watched it so I didn't know that actually sounds better and worse that breaks my heart though him thinking she loves the SML how does she react to him not being the one who wrote the letters and not telling her as soon as he found out?

The thing is Dosan and Jipyeong both at various times at the start of the show wanted to tell her the truth but the Grandma was like no. So we basically can't blame the lying about the letters part on any one character. It was all 3 of them (so that kinda cancels out in my brain 🤣) and Dalmi was ofc very upset at all of them at first but forgave them soon.

StartUp is an awesome kdrama and I would forever be upset that it got reduced to a love triangle. You should definitely watch it 💖.

I am so Team Dodal and love Nam Dosan and Dalmi together. I am a big fan of Kin Seonho, who is fantastic as Han Jipyong, but he had so many chances to come clean and Dalmi is just not feeling it. Countless viewers are feeling it, but not her, obviously. Dosan is making mistakes, but he is only human and has flaws. But I think he is so endearing, taking things literally, being temperamental and unsure of himself. Relatable. I loved your fics @sweetestlamb

having an otp is confusing and amazing at the same time because you’re watching two characters fall in love with each other and you love them so much and just their overall banter together and you keep searching up content about them and laugh at their conversations and cry at their arguments and you get the same butterflies you get when you think about your crush and you’re so so glad that they found each other and support them 100 percent like a proud mother in law and their interactions make you giddy and whenever you see an "imagine your otp" your mind immediately jumps to them and takes your breath away

it’s like.. you fall in love with their love and honestly it’s such an unexpectedly wholesome experience I love it give me more

The way Dalmi followed Dosan to talk and then didn't talk at all, didn't even do the kdrama version of let's talk where they make out. Just said let's talk and then fell asleep immediately, on a bench, sitting down.

catching up on ep 13 now, and you know what... as annoying as it is that the love triangle is still a thing, it does serve a purpose and it's in line w the very theme that started all this. Jipyeong has had 3 unobstructed years to develop something w Dalmi and he hasn't moved an inch. He's once again fine with the relationship they have currently, until someone (Dosan, random dude) shows interest in her, and then he starts a pissing contest (the hand comparison lmao). Yet when he has a real chance he does nothing?

My take is that this is misplaced territorialism. He wants a family, so he projects those feelings onto Dalmi and mistakes it for romantic. At the beginning he felt no need to ever contact her again, and it wasn't until Dalmi herself took the initiative to find him that he sprung into action and brought the real Dosan into the fold. Dosan then, in his eyes, became a threat to whatever scrap of family he had managed to find. Now that he's become essentially a part of that family (and I love that for him 😭), he seems content in where he is with Dalmi... until what he perceives as a new threat to that shows up to "steal" her away, and by consequence the family he's a part of.

I think his journey is very much about accepting their love and finally understanding that he's a member of their family now, not a guest.

Didn't you also say they breakup because he doesn't tell her he didn't write the letters? I don't know how that gets resolved does he get hurt thinking she doesn't like him after all? oh and that sml was a pos to dosan I saw people saying he treats dosan like shit for no reason.

Yeah they breakup too and no it wasn't coz of the letters. Dosan gets a better opportunity abroad and Dalmi wants him to pursue it so she breaksup for his sake and basically just lies about the reason being that he isn't the Dosan who wrote the letters.

Yeah the way Conrad treated Jere in s2 finale reminded me a lot of how the sml treated Dosan.

Startup wasn't even a proper love triangle imo coz Dalmi never like Jipyeong romantically.
