The funniest thing about the boiling rock episodes is zuko telling sokka at the start how this prison houses the most dangerous and notorious criminals of the fire nation as well as war prisoners, and then at the end they just let one of them tag along without ever asking him what he was in for. Could have brought a serial killer to meet the fucking avatar and they'd be none the wiser

this is literally exactly what sokka sounds like in the fortune-teller ep when he's desperately trying to prove that fortune telling isn't real

Okay so I’m still stuck on the fact that Bato has seemingly been forgotten about post-canon (comics etc) and it really got me thinking on why this happened, and it led to two conclusions.
A. Bato is seen as an incidental character. He served his specific purpose in the show for the narrative, and is no longer needed for stories post-canon.
If this is the case, then it’s just one I heavily disagree with. He’s been close friends with Hakoda since childhood, he is seen as parental figure to Sokka and Katara, even stepping in as a father figure to take Sokka ice dodging, something Sokka couldn’t do with Hakoda. In short, Bato is clearly very close to Hakoda and his family, and even if the stories post canon (looking at the comics) couldn’t find a place for Bato to serve a big role, it still struck me as odd that Bato is never seen again, or even mentioned in name, which leads to the second conclusion..
B. He really was just forgotten about. Blipped out of the universe.
And honestly (please correct me if I’m wrong), considering the fact that, again, Bato isn’t seen, not even mentioned by name, not even seen in a single panel as a background character, yeah, I think this is what happened lmao.
I’m gonna cut this off before this gets too long, but this isn’t just about Bato imo. I have a lot of thoughts about all the side/incidental characters in the show (Piandao, Jeong Jeong, Kanna, the list goes on and on) and how they’re handled post-canon. Basically, I think there’s so much potential in bringing these characters back and actually taking the time to explore them, which would expand the lore etc etc, and how it just.. isn’t happening haha.

The Boling Rock has got to be my favourite Maiko epsiode because of several things:
I expected them to pull the plug on Maiko the moment Zuko switched sides. But while he did break up with her there wasn't any animosity.
Now, you might ask why would I expect animosity in this situation?
Because what we get to see of their relationship is at a time when Zuko's struggling with his Identity—so most of it is them not working out.
And now that Zuko is one of the heroes, and Mai one of the villains you'd expect for her to be put in her place. Like it often happens to female villains.
But Zuko only seemed sad at the prospect of leaving her.
I had a feeling that Zuko's feelings for Mai weren't as strong as hers were for him. Until he tells Sokka about her.
It's such a simple thing, he just talks fondly of her. And it does more to show that he genuinely wants to be with her than several episodes before that did.
Then, again, because we're used to tropes, I kept expecting them to have a final fallout. Because something about that break up did not feel very final. Or wasn't disparaging to Mai.
But Boiling Rock keeps rolling and there's no signs of Maiko sinking. If anything they go ahead and pull her betraying everything she's ever known for him.
Zuko shows no signs of ill will towards her. Even when she's on the wrong side of the war. Even when he thinks she's loyal to Azula. Even when he probably can't begin to think about the outcome of the war—and them being able to get together depends on that.
He still can't help but be hopelessly in love with her. (I honestly did not think he loved her back before this episode. It felt like she put his needs first and he liked her because of it).
Compare that to the ease with which he cut ties with Ozai and Azula: he simply couldn't bring himself to approach Mai that way.
I think that's the kind of unconditional love Mai needs. Her parents' love for her was extremely conditional, Zuko's wasn't.

jetkokka (atla) post-war au (Jet lives and all three of them are dating because Ba Sing Se literally exists)
Sokka is appointed Ambassador of the South Water Tribe because his father's gone back to be Chief and Sokka just wanted an excuse to stay at the Fire Nation and in the Fire Palace so he could be closer to Zuko (who is obviously the Fire Lord)
Toph also jumps onto this and demands Zuko make up a role for her too so she can stay at the Fire Palace too, so she's appointed Ambassador of the Earth Kingdom
Now Jet (who obviously lives because I'm fucking delusional) questions Zuko and asks him what's his official cool title coz he doesn't just wanna be "The Fire Lord's Companion" so Zuko says he's his personal guard, but Jet challenges this and says that he doesn't need a personal guard when he's got Suki and the Kyoshi Warriors
Sokka (who's lounging on Zuko's bed) hears this and gets the image of Jet in Kyoshi Warrior uniform and immediately tells the other two, which results in a night of Sokka wrestling Jet into the uniform after sitting on top of him already to apply the makeup. Zuko just sits by and watches, joyfully enjoying the show.

i honestly love how silly so many atla characters are when you boil them down. sokka literally is out here as one small untrained boy with the confidence of an entire trained legion. aang has the most insanely overpowered abilities ever and he gives them up so he can be with his girlfriend, who is literally just a booktok boyfriend reincarnated into a water tribe girl who also invented feminism.
the gaang really are just the best examples of character writing ever. no-one will ever do it better than them.

I'm from Venezuela and today they celebrate carnival so I decided to make a Gaang Headcanon in this celebration
•Sokka and Zuko would be the typical duo where one makes foam or water and the other throws confetti, obviously Sokka is the one who makes water or confetti and Zuko throws confetti and if someone returns the prank Sokka takes out his secret foam can and he foams double and Zuko throws double confetti
•Aang would not participate since he thinks that the carnival is a somewhat aggressive festival, but if someone attacks Appa with foam or confetti (which in this case is a dog), he attacks with his foam canister that he hides in his backpack.
•Toph LOVES the carnival because she can get dirty and play pranks on people so normally she would join the Sokka and Zuko duo by having Sokka throw water at people and she throw foam
• Katara and Suki don't care about the carnival, but if someone is too funny, they both attack with foam without mercy, regardless of whether foam falls on their face, mouth, or eyes.
•At the end of the day everyone goes to eat at a hot dog stand and starts chatting and telling funny stories.

honestly my pettiest hot take is that i think it’s Weird how many fics/popular headcanons depict zuko as being bad at making tea forever and i… Do Not like it. i mean, i will still read it if it’s otherwise a good fic, but trust that it has me considering clicking out.
we see zuko make bad tea one (1) time, when he makes it for iroh in bitter work after he wakes up from his unconscious state. and honestly, i think it’s the first time he’s ever tried making it on his own, since with servants at the palace, he wouldn’t have needed to. even on their ship, they had a cook who could’ve made tea, though realistically it was probably iroh more often than not. being bad at something the first time (and honestly, the first couple of times) you try it is par for the course. (and hey, the fact that he wanted to make tea, which he knows how greatly iroh values, for iroh to comfort him upon waking is still really sweet, even if it doesn’t go so great the first time.)
while we don’t see the day-to-day of their work in the tea shop in the lower ring in ba sing se, we know zuko is working there as a tea server every day, learning, and, hey, he keeps his job. (and yes, i know the argument could be made that the owner liked iroh so much that it wouldn’t have mattered, but i counter with this: there is absolutely a point at which your lack of skill outweighs any connections you have because it gets in the way, and if zuko is that terrible at it and shows no signs of growth or improvement, that would, in fact, be the point.)
later, we see zuko serve tea to the gaang and co, and while zuko says it won’t be as good as iroh’s (because he loves and misses him 😭), no one else has anything to say about it! the gaang is already lightly poking fun at him for his poor retelling of iroh’s joke, it wouldn’t have been hard to include. and if the show wanted to keep ‘zuko being bad at making tea’ as a gag, all they had to do was show a character or two making the same kind of face iroh makes in bitter work or trying to hand it off to someone else. but they didn’t! we even actually see teo take a sip with a mildly pleasant expression. and like, this isn’t even me saying i think he makes the best tea in the world, or even that it’s as good a iroh’s. i just don’t think he’s bad at it!
and we see him serving tea to his loved ones again in the earth kingdom in the finale and it’s the culmination of the part of his arc that’s about learning humility and to build healthier relationships and not self-isolate, to find peace and joy in little things. we see throughout the series that though iroh i’m sure loves tea for tea’s sake, he also uses it as a point of connection with people, and zuko is clearly trying to mimic that when he’s making an effort to bond with the gaang and later just to show love to his friends like! this is his way of trying to show love and affection in what comes to be maybe the clearest form of it he understands due to iroh’s influence. and the idea that he is bad at that makes me sad, but also, canon disagrees, so jot that down.
(also, if nothing else: iroh is there in that last scene. do we honestly think he’d let zuko make and serve the tea if it was bad?)
