Happy New Year!

I know I haven’t been posting much lately, but I do like to write something every year on New Year’s Eve so I can look back on things if I want to in the future.

So 2023 was a pretty awesome year for me, to be honest. I really didn’t accomplish any of my goals from my last New Year’s post, except for continuing my Duolingo streak, but you know what? It’s totally fine. I set myself back financially and made no progress on getting in shape, but I had a lot of fun!! And that’s really what this year, particularly this summer, was about.

Travel Highlights:

Went to Colorado in June/July, had an amazing spa day and fancy dinner on my birthday, did a bunch of really cool hikes and took a ton of photos, had more fancy dinners, saw 4th of July fireworks over the Denver skyline, went to museums including the Molly Brown house and the best prehistoric exhibit I’ve ever seen, saw moose and elk, and generally had the best time ever.

Visited my aunts in North Carolina for the first time, and had a great time. They convinced me to treat myself while we were at a real jewelry store so I got myself some diamond earrings. Because why the hell not? I’m an adult with a salary, and I don’t need to save or put toward bills every penny I make.

Went to Ocean City in Maryland for the first time as well, which was a ton of fun even though I’m not the most beachy person ever. Ate crabs, got wasted, rode rides, saw wild horses, and then afterward went to Hershey Park which was also a lot of fun and had great roller coasters!

Went to Colorado AGAIN spur of the moment in November because we finally got invited to go to Casa Bonita. So we did that, of course, went on an awesome winter hike in RMNP, got massages, and had a fancy dinner at a Chianti event in Denver.

I also went to a few shows this year:

Iron & Wine in July which is definitely a highlight of the year because he is my favorite musician and I’d never seen him before. Super intimate acoustic show so I didn’t get any pics or videos but I’ll remember it forever, especially that he played my favorite song!

Modest Mouse, Lord Huron, and a bunch of smaller bands at a two day festival in August. Such a fun time, and both headliners were SO good. Lord Huron is a newer find, but I’ve been listening to Modest Mouse for over a decade and never saw them live!

Death Cab for Cutie and The Postal Service in September, for the 20th Anniversary Transatlanticism and Give Up tour. This was my second time seeing Death Cab but this show was special because both bands played those two albums in full, and Transatlanticism is one of my favorite albums ever.

Other cool things:

Went to a fancy tea room in Boston.

Saw Titanic in theaters TWICE during the 25th anniversary rerelease.

Saw a queer comedy show.

Practiced drawing more, but not as much as I’d like.

Went to the gym slightly more consistently.

Cooked some great meals.

Started writing a fanfic I love, which I truly do intend to finish!

Went on a couple of writing weekend trips to Maine which did of course include lobster and a dessert bar.

Had many snuggles with my cats.

Made sweet desserts for my family’s Thanksgiving and Christmas get togethers.

Played a billion hours of The Sims, and took hundreds of screenshots for my save’s very extensive family tree.

Cut down on waitressing hours at the expense of my savings account so I can have weekends back and not burn out so easily.

Other than all that, I went to work and that was fine, tried dating a few times but nothing panned out, and just kind of hung out and did my thing most days.

Huge shout out to @terieri who not only is my travel buddy, but also willingly came to all those concerts, and is the only person who is as invested in my Sims lives as I am! This year would have been super lame without her.

2023 was all about having fun, exploring, doing new things, and eating great food. It gave me a lot of memories and while I know I won’t be able to afford having another year like this for some time, hopefully I can make 2024 pretty great too!

I hope you all have a wonderful night doing whatever you choose to do on New Year’s Eve, and that 2024 starts off amazingly for you all. For myself, I like to get takeout and play video games so that’s what I’m going to do.

hey, i wanted to send this much sooner but i actually got very busy with holiday stuff myself! which reminds me, i was looking online for a specific hercules pin i wanted to buy for myself, and thought of your blog when i came across a really cute pin of young tarzan & terk. it was apparently released in 2021 so i'm glad the movie hasn't been completely forgotten by disney in recent years. makes me wish jane had a classic doll like megara and esmeralda have.

also, yeah, there's quite a few art books for disney and other animation companies (i'm thinking of certain dreamworks books, for example) that are older and/or out of print and have gotten way too pricey now. so i was really grateful they rereleased the mulan one because it's absolutely gorgeous.

ooh that's really cool about the tazan book, i hope you do find a copy you can take apart and scan someday! and i think it's awesome that you've loved tarzan for so long. would you say it's been your favorite disney movie from the first time you saw it, or did it take some time for it to sink in or grow on you? for me, i'd say frozen became one of my favorite movies as soon as i saw it, but beauty and the beast, while i always really liked it, was a movie that grew on me more and more as my tastes changed and i started loving it more than my previous favorites.

I know the Tarzan pin you're talking about, its so cute! I would give anything for a Jane classic doll, would de so nice to see her join Esmeralda and Meg. I'm really hoping for a LE 17" for the 25th anniversary, and there's a slim chance it may happen, but I'm not holding my breath. There's still that annoying copyright issue that gets in the way. According to Steve Thompson (the artist who designs the Disney Store Christmas ornaments every year) Disney has the rights for Tarzan products sold within the parks, which is how the pin was possible. Not sure how that would work with a Jane doll, but at least there's a sliver of hope.

Good news though! Next month is the EPCOT International Festival of the Arts, and Steve will be there with 3 pieces, one of which is Tarzan!!! He's revealed the full look at his Atlantis and Treasure Planet pieces, hoping he'll post Tarzan within the week (I will be sure to share it here when he does). Prints of his work will be available at the festival, and they usually show up on ebay too.

I think it would be fair to say I loved Tarzan before I saw it, lol. Back in the day, before the internet became so accessible, we used to find out what the next Disney movie was in the previews on the VHS of the last one. I'll never forget Feb 2, 1999… I raced to the grocery store after school to buy Mulan because I couldn't wait to see it again. In the previews was the first part of the Movie Surfers look at Tarzan Every year those previews would get me so excited for the next movie, but something about Tarzan just hit different. I almost didn't watch Mulan that night, because I kept watching it over and over again. I think I fell in love with Tarzan before I got halfway through that preview, and I seem to love it more every day.

That's so interesting that your 2 fav movies got you in such different ways. What is it about Frozen that made you fall in love with it so fast? What's your favourite thing about Frozen? And same for beauty and the Beast? I also have to say I think it's so neat that BatB is the one that had to grow on you a bit, it kind of fits the theme of the movie.

Some Titanic thoughts after seeing the 25th Anniversary Rerelease!

Thought number 1: about being a Titanic fan

Back when I first fell in love with Titanic, the backlash was pretty much at its height.

I became interested in the history of the real ship immediately after finishing the movie. I also immediately found out that if you wanted to be taken seriously in online communities centered around the historical Titanic, you couldn’t admit that you liked the movie, and to be taken seriously as a person in general, you also couldn’t admit that you liked it. It was just the absolute epitome of cringe back then. People don’t fall in love like that in two days, it’s so stupid~

And I just want to say that remembering all that nonsense makes me so glad that we’ve moved past that!!

I love that even serious history nerds can say they like the movie these days – and why shouldn’t we. James Cameron is clearly one of the most committed Titanic nerds of all time; he’s gone on record saying that the movie was an elaborate excuse for him to dive to the wreck. We could’ve had a big successful movie set on the Titanic directed by someone who only wanted a dramatic historical backdrop for their story and didn’t care about the details – but instead, we got a movie made by a Titanic nerd, with lots and lots of goodies for other Titanic nerds. And I’m also grateful that these days, you can mention Titanic being your favourite movie without people literally rolling their eyes at you.

Now, if only we could shut down the eternal “would they have both fit on that door” debate, then I would be perfectly content...

Thought number 2: about the romance

Personally, I’m as asexual as they come, and usually, I’m not especially excited about fictional love stories – with a handful of rather dark and/or tragic exceptions, because sometimes, you just gotta stare into the darkness and think about desire and death and heartbreak for a while. Yet I adore this movie, and always have. Of course, it fits the tragic bill... but at least at this point in my life, I don’t enjoy the romance because of the tragedy. Instead, to me, it’s all about the light; all about Rose’s character arc.

Presumably, Jack is the first person who ever sees Rose for who she is, instead of what they want her to be – and that, having a person she can safely be herself with, even if it’s only for two and a half days, gives Rose the courage and determination to live the rest of her life on her own terms. But for Rose to grow into the woman she’s destined to become, she also has to lose Jack. It’s only via being forced to stand on her own two feet, without anyone around to push her or to hold her hand, that she unlocks her full potential. Seeing those photos of her life at the end feels so rewarding somehow – she survived, and then she learned to thrive. I love that for her.

In a nutshell: to me, the appeal of this love story is that it’s also a story about a woman realising her full potential. Also, the feeling of being with someone you can be 100% yourself with is a powerful, lovely thing, no matter whether you experience it in a romantic or a platonic or familial or whatever context, so that speaks to me too.

Thought number 3: what makes me cry

I guess it’s because I was touched by the way they portrayed him in the musical, but I found myself paying close attention to First Officer Murdoch today, and I feel like my perspective of the movie’s portrayal of him changed a little. I’ve always interpreted it as pretty negative (and I know there were complaints about his characterisation when the movie was first released), but this time... dunno, the character just felt more human and sympathetic to me than he ever has before. I managed not to cry for the entire sinking, but then, spotting Murdoch in the finale right next to Thomas Andrews hit me with an unexpected force, and there I was again.

Good thing I wasn’t alone with my feelings, though: I don’t think I’ve ever seen a queue to a ladies’ room look so distraught than after this showing. I guess when you’re a fan of this movie (and I bet everyone who found their way to a 12:30 showing on a Friday was), it just always finds its way into your heart, no matter how many times you’ve seen it.

I feel like in general, the older I get, the more works of fiction make me cry. What’s up with that?

The Mummy (1999) Review

The Mummy! Or to use its proper name, the Brendan Fraser Mummy. It's the 25th anniversary of when it came out, so the studio that owns it is rereleasing it in theaters for those nostalgic for it to see it again. I am not one of those people. Surprising, considering I was negative 6 months old when it came out. But I do like pulpy archeologist adventure movies. It's just a shame that you really need to turn your brain off for all of them. Or at least ignore the fact that the ancient booby traps are completely impractical and the main character are always kinda terrible people. (Looking at you Dr. Jones.)

What's The Movie About?

Two siblings discover a map to the ancient Egyptian city of the dead, and they rescue Brendan Fraser to take them there. When they arrive, they accidently awaken a thousand year old priest who brings curses to the land and tries to kidnap the female main character to bring his girlfriend back to life.

Y'know. The usual stuff.

What I Like.

This is an action comedy, and the best thing about the movie is the action, and the comedy. The action is fun, frenetic, and exciting. And a lot of the time the comedy is beautifully integrated as well. I've heard people say this movie is unintentionally funny, which I don't know what they hell they are talking about. All the comedy is witty, quick, and obviously intended. Beni is a perfect foil to the good guys and I was actually kinda sad he died, even though he's a slimy bastard. Speaking of which, all the characters are kind of terrible, but I love them all. Brendan Fraser is such an interesting actor, especially now days. I feel like you don't see a lot of actors doing both Oscar-appealing dramas like the Whale at the same time as weird conceptual nerd-bait like Doom Patrol. I really like the Evie character too. I like that she's smart, and even though she's a damsel in distress, uses her position to trick Imhotep and distract him. Speaking of which, I love the guy playing Imhotep. He has so many smarmy facial expressions, I love him. It's a pretty impressive performance as well, since it's almost entirely a physical one. (Actually, all his lines are a dubbed over monster voice, so maybe it is an entirely physical performance.) I also really liked Winston. There should be more characters like him.

What I Don't Like.

It's been said a million times, but the CGI in this movie is pretty bad. It's so bad even I can tell it sucks. Moving swiftly along, this movie is also really stupid. Mostly in a fun way, I might add. But if you start thinking about almost any part of it, the plot, character motivations, and mechanics of the mummy's curse swiftly fall apart. I don't like that Imhotep is afraid of cats. That's just dumb. If it played into his final defeat, like a horde of cats is what kills him, it would have been better. Finally, the movie is kinda racist. I think. Maybe? I'm actually not sure. They didn't hire any actual Egyptians to play any of the characters, but they did hire some non-white actors to play the Egyptians and this did come out 25 years ago so eeehhh... The Medjai are the most competent and badass characters in the movie, but the movie also opens with a bunch of white guys shooting hundreds of jabbering locals so eeeeeehhhhhh... Beni is a sleezy French thief but he's also shown to be really cunning and the second or third smartest person in the plot so eeeeeeeeehhhhhhhhh... Just to be safe I'm going to assume it's racist. Not maliciously so, but that's still not great. Also Rachel Weisz sort of gets sexually assaulted like 3 times and the movie plays it off, so that's also not great.

Final Summation.

Yeah the movie is really stupid, but I had a lot of fun! I think it should be clear at this point that I am a simple dude. I see fun action with charismatic heroes and funny quips, I will like. It is totally better than Phantom Menace. (Which I mention not only because movie-goers in 1999 said the same thing, but also because Phantom Menace is being rereleased in like 2 days at time of writing and I'm not watching it because I've seen it before and it sucks.)

Oo oo I had some thoughts, hopefully it's okay to reblog this and add them, I just want people to see the info behind the thoughts. Now, of course, I won't be expecting anything for certain because that's just a good way to be disappointed but I do have one wish for what I'd love to see!

A rerelease as a way to celebrate their designs! Last year Build-a-Bear had their 25th anniversary and so each month they put out one rereleased bear from years past and they were then available for the rest of the year, they restocked a couple times and were only removed after the final time they went out of stock once the anniversary ended. It was really fun, however there were some differences between rerelease plushies and the originals im terms of quality.

Since Jellycat is different in terms of their vibe and how they do things what I think would work well from them instead of a timed vault release each month is a release of a fair few rerelease plushies on or around the day of the 25th anniversary. They'd just keep the design the same as the original releases using the same fabric or closest thing to it they could get now, and the rereleases would be available for the entire year, restocking when they run out (as well as getting plenty of stock in in the first place).

They could even go as far as opening preorders a few times through the year so you could guarantee you'd definitely get the rereleased designs you wanted if you had the money during one of the preorder periods since it'd allow them to know how many to have manufactured and then they could have a smaller number available as regular stock on release/restock days. Obviously there'd be a limit of about 2 of any given design per person (checking name/address/accounts) to help minimise scalping. They shouldn't then set their own prices higher for the rereleases, like just keeping them in line with current pricing would make the most sense to me.

I'm really hoping at the very least it'll be a bit better than that, although we could just get a social media post and that's it.

Some supplemental little things that could be fun along with this would be if they slightly altered the tag design on the new releases and the rereleases that year, and some special edition bags that mention the 25th anniversary that you'd receive your plushies in if you ordered at any time during that year. They could also have a free little ribbon in silver or something tied in a bow on each plush ordered, not sewn on or anything just a bow (could velcro together in the back like the Build-a-Bear gifting bows) as a cute little extra touch even just on specific the rereleases or just the orders placed during the actual month of the anniversary.

It'd also be more important than ever to try to keep items in stock that aren't part of the rereleases, especially popular designs like Bartholomew Bear, and I personally would like to see Really Big Sacha Snow Tiger in stock more often (if I can afford it I think the 25th anniversary would be the perfect year for me to get one actually).

(this is a tangent to give an example of a poorly done anniversary) Which would still be better than The Sims' 20th anniversary which was incredibly lackluster with just one item and a few songs added and a patch note mentioning "starting" the celebration with those things, leading people to think more might be coming when it wasn't, we didn't even get another patch at all for several more months (and this was Feb 2020 just before widespread lockdowns were happening, although maybe more was planned but couldn't happen because of everything that happened). The 25th is in a couple years so fingers crossed that'll be better because they've definitely been doing better in terms of free stuff in patches recently. (tangent over, thank you for your patience)

Lastly I'll add a wee list of designs I think could be candidates for rerelease (based on popularity and how obnoxious they are to find second hand at a sensible price)...

I can't think of many off the top of my head since I generally don't really look at things in terms of popularity and usually just look at things for what they are and hoe much I like them, but with some of the above designs it's kinda hard to miss how popular they are rn (which is of course subject to change but I've noticed that once prices and availability are affected by popularity the price and availability often don't improve). I don't think it should matter when they were discontinued for the rereleases as long as there aren't many/any left out in random retailers I think it's fair game. I also don't know a ton about specific Bashful or Amuseable designs that have come and gone over the years but included them since they're so iconic to the brand and well loved.

I had no idea their anniversary was coming up! I’ll have to keep that in mind for next year. I’m a somewhat new collector so I only have a few jellies, but I think I’m hooked. It’s all thanks to you!

Yes! Jellycat is celebrating 25 years next year and I'm hoping for some special releases/editions. I will definitely take the anniversary as an opportunity to look back on past collections and show how they have evolved as a brand over more than two decades!

So, a few weeks ago @knickynoo posted these questions here.  It’s taken me a while, but here are answers to all of them!

1. Which film is your favorite in the trilogy and why?

Well, when I first saw the movies when I was a little kid (in 1997, I think), my favorite was Part II, because of the future portion. I would sometimes just watch until they left to return to 1985, rewind the tape, and watch that part again.

By the time I was in college, Part III was definitely my favorite. I think the romance aspect resonated with me at that age.

By the time the real 2015 came around, it became Part I. I’m not entirely sure why, though?  Maybe because of how well it stands on its own.

2. A favorite memory attached to the films

In 2000, my parents and I took a vacation to Los Angeles, and we stopped at Universal Studios. I got my picture taken with “Doc,” and I rode the ride at least three times. But I was kinda more interested in the props and memorabilia in the waiting rooms for the ride than the ride itself, as well as the names on the doors of the “offices” in the Institute of Future Technology. (Like Benjamin Franklin.)

Also, after having moved to Los Angeles late in 2014, I was actually in Courthouse Square on October 21, 2015. It was quite something. Though the buildings were different (The Courthouse facade is different, for one), it was still like actually being in Hill Valley.

Finally, I saw the 25th anniversary rerelease in 2010. It was amazing! I saw and heard things I never had before, like all the past due bills in Doc's garage, and the leaves rustling at the clocktower.

3. A scene that makes you smile/laugh/cheer and why

I always want to cheer at the scene in Part II when Marty burns the almanac and sees that his dad is alive again. Also works as an answer to the next question.

4. A scene that makes you emotional (sad, edge of your seat, etc.)

I get so emotional at the scene where Doc tells Clara he’s leaving her that I usually have to mute it because I can’t take it!

5. Who is your favorite secondary character?

I have to go with Jennifer Parker. I feel like there’s much more to her than we get to see. (Enough that in a fanfic that I’ve been working on [for like seven years now, so don’t get your hopes up] she sorta took over as the main character from Marty!) Also, what little we see of her and Marty in the first movie—like, it’s obvious that they’d still be together thirty years later, IMO.

6. A favorite quote/bit of dialogue

I have to go with “EAT LEAD, SLACKERS!” I crack up just thinking about it. Marty’s little “Augh!” as he runs away adds to it.

7. Things you would have liked explored or explained

This one was holding me up for a while, but I think that, after seeing so much of the McFlys and the Tannens, we need more of the Browns, Baineses, and Claytons. Especially the Baines family--even the extensions (see below) have no information on their background, AFAIK.

8. Any thoughts or opinions on the extensions of the film? (TellTale game/comics, etc.)

I’m not a video game player—the most recent system I have is an N64 I was given when it was new, in 1996—but I tried the Telltale game. I didn’t finish it, but I read the articles about it on the BTTF wiki and fell in love with the story anyway! I actually started incorporating bits into my fanfics.

The comics I liked enough, though I should note I never got around to Hard Time, Tales From The Time Train, or Biff to the Future. 3.5 of 5 stars, perhaps—though mostly because they conflict with my post-Part III headcanons and such! Still, I wish they were making new ones. (Also, I did a fic in 2009 called “The Other Time Traveler” about someone else who comes up with the flux capacitor, and it was interesting to see the same idea in the comics with Professor Irving.)

The animated series—I’ve never seen it. I’ve heard bad things, but all I’m going to say is that, from seeing screen grabs, I don’t like the art style. But, when I learned about the series as a kid, it had already gone off the air, so I scoured every video rental store in town to find a copy of any episode (there were some VHS releases). I couldn’t find them anywhere, and writing this almost makes me relive the disappointment!

Finally, though I’ve never read the whole thing, a copy of the Part III novelization is in my possession. I got it at a thrift store/antique store the first day I transferred to my university, and the lady there said she hoped it would be good luck, since it was my favorite of the three at the time.
