PotC was on the telly a few days ago, I started a new sketchbook (after years of not using a sketchbook, just random paper) and I never drink and today I had some mulled wine and whiskey and now I have feelings.
So here's some drunken sketches of my two favourite men in PotC. And my handwriting looks like absolute garbage at this point.
#Be grateful that there won't be any drunken ramblings about how much i love potc because I honestly feel like I'm gonna throw up any minute#i know why i never drink#it feels like yesterday when I saw dmtnt in cinema#potc lets me feel like a child again#pirates of the caribbean#potc#potc fanart#jack sparrow#hector barbossa#my art

The way things are. Ghosts and mermaids and undead pirates were indeed the way things were, but Henry was preaching to the admittedly sacrilegious choir in that regard. Jack already knew those things; more interesting and telling, in his opinion, was the vehemence with which Henry was arguing his point to someone who was already on his side. And then the way that he tried to distract himself with some mundane task. All signs that what Jack suspected was true: the boy was smitten.
Leaning back against the Gull's railing, as relaxed as any man could be while being chased by an undead Spaniard and suffering under the peculiar curse of constant, consistent misfortune, Jack continued to smile at him, cheshire-cat like. It was a pleasant distraction, at least, to watch the youngsters argue and bicker and engage in such a tried and tested mating ritual, all while he watched from the sidelines. He tried not to think about the way that thought made his joints ache a little — an older bystander to events as opposed to a youthful participant. If he wanted to be particularly maudlin about it, he could think about just how many generations of Turner he'd watch do the same thing: dance uselessly around the object of their affections. But Jack wasn't going to be that cruel to himself.
“ Just admit that you enjoy sparring with her, Henry. It gets easier to manage if you can do that. ” Half of the battle was to admit that you enjoyed the game, the back and forth, the constantly needing to be on your toes, waiting for the next repartee. “ Besides, her necessary inclusion in this expedition notwithstanding, if you really didn't like her I'd know about it. ” Jack idly tapped ringed fingers along the railing. He wagered he knew Henry's tells better than Henry himself did, sometimes. “ You like her because she's clever, because she's stubborn, and because she insists that she's right even though you know she's not. In that order. ” A beat, before he added, “ Nothing to be ashamed of. ”
@lighthouseborn
Things aboard the Gull were beginning to feel.. almost normal. Closer to right, anyhow. This was the most like-himself that Jack had seemed to Henry since scrapping their way out of the gallows. Truly enough, it was still utter nonsense he had no intention whatsoever of adopting into his mindset, but at last it was the kind of insensible that he expected, and not so marked with a kind of quiet defeatism. Whatever had hold of Jack on Saint Martin — bad luck, according to Gibbs (but everything was bad luck, according to Gibbs) it seemed.. if not gone, outrun for the moment. Henry was grateful. And annoyed. He ducked and swiped half-heartedly at Jack's hand, uttering a sound of dismissal.
“I'm not advocating,” he argued, “I've only ever made point of the way things are! And anyway, she began it before we even traded names. I hardly think silence is going to change anything now.” He turned away, searching for some task to commit himself to. Unfortunately the ship was small, and the crew, for all their rag-tag appearance, effective. There wasn't a line or splinter out of place. Henry resorted to standing near the helm, a hand upon the wheel even though it was already locked into their heading. His reach to hook the fingers of his free hand through the cord of his father's necklace was idle, without his intent or notice. “And to speak of experience, I am-”
The cut off was blunt, as abrupt as the glance he threw to the far rail at which Carina was standing. It didn't look like she had heard any of the goings-on. (In fact Henry rather firmly believed they could sail headlong into a hurricane and she'd not notice, with that book in her hands.) Nevertheless, he made another noise, ach, which meant forget it, while patently ignoring the flush threatening the sides of his neck and face.
#lighthouseborn#&. verse. bad luck dogs you day and night ( dmtnt. )#surprise!!! i actually wrote you a thing hannah :')#i still love this sm

Touch is essential in the relationship between Elizabeth and Will. Touch of their hands, of their foreheads... of their skin.
When Will embraces Elizabeth after Weatherby's death, we can see his arms as her last haven. When Will is on the verge of dying, we can see Elizabeth's hands on his cheeks as his last anchor to life.
I think their long, expected, full-of-love hug is the only scene that makes sense in DMTNT: their eyes closed, their arms around each other, Elizabeth that seems to inhale Will's scent (we can hear Keira Knightley's breath!)... So touching! 🥺💘

Rewatched DMTNT (bc I like to suffer) and it hit me that that movie is literally just bargain DMC.
You have:
- undead magic bad guys who can’t step on land hunting Jack for a past grievance
- a Turner wanting to save his father
- female love interest also hunting the same Macguffin
- evil British dude hunting magical Macguffin so he can control the seas
- Jack looking for Macguffin to save himself
- Jack’s crew peacing out on him bc he sucks at his job
- Random island sequence bc heroes need to escape the sea ft. Random bad guys who make Jack their business
- magical sea creatures controlled by villain
- Turner and female lead almost executed
- woman with magic who foreshadows other characters’ fates
THEYRE THE SAME MOVIE

In other important movie-watching news, I finally got around to watching a film that I have wanted to see since at least 2020, and I am being very unwell about it which is umm. since the film in question is the fifth Pirates of the Caribbean movie, Dead Men Tell No Tales/Salazar's Revenge. Literally for years I have wanted to see this, but I am exceptionally bad at consuming media (which does not help my popularity on tumblr dot com.)
You might think I would watch a lot more Boat Media but I am (weirdly) not into the popular shows; however I do enjoy the PotC franchise even though I have only watched and owned the first three movies, up until now. I got into it in the early 2000s and it's very interesting revisiting it now that I'm in my Marryat Era and all nautical media hits different.
I don't care if DMTNT has Jack Sparrow phoning it in or whatever it is that people complain about, I watched this movie for Capitán Salazar and I LOVE HIM YOUR HONOR. It's two in the morning and I'm wondering what was fictional character Armando Salazar doing in the War of the Spanish Succession?? And what would his educational background be since it's before the Academia de Guardias Marinas omfg I have to learn about the Habsburgs I am being very normal and definitely have not read 250k words of fanfiction
#armando salazar#dead men tell no tales#potc#i am five years too late for this fandom rest in pieces#i will take this unhinged behaviour to a sideblog don't worry i just wanted to get this out of my system#going full jstor on this movie#i owe a few people fanfic comments (lots of them)#oaaahh owww ouggh just want to give captain salazar a hug ('totally worth it' i say while dying)

I see Indiana Jones x The Mummy crossovers, and raise you…
Hamilton x Pirates of the Caribbean Crossover
I mean, think about it. The timeline and locations actually line up more than you would think:
Shortly after his birth in 1708, Will Turner and his parents move to North Carolina, where they would live for the next 7 years, until 1715, when his father, Bootstrap Bill Turner, joins Captain Jack Sparrow on the Black Pearl and Will moves with his mother to England.
The main events of Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl take place in 1728, when Jack Sparrow is about 38 years old and Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann are about 20.
Dead Man's Chest and At World's End happen about a year later, in 1729, including Will and Elizabeth's wedding and the conception of their son, Henry Turner, who is born about 9 months later in May(?) 1730.
Hector Barbossa is in his early 60s at the time of the events above, though probably biologically in his 50s, considering his cursed and undead status for a decade prior to COTBP.
On Stranger Tides takes place in 1750, when Jack is about 60 years old and Barbossa is in his early 80s. Dead Men Tell No Tales comes a year later in 1751, when Jack is about 61, the Turner couple are about 43, Henry is about 21, and his new love interest and Hector's daughter, Carina Smyth Barbossa, is about 19.
As the name of the film series suggests, all of the events above take place in the Caribbean, with the original trilogy centering around Port Royal, Jamaica.
Alexander Hamilton is born in 1755 or 1757 in Charlestown, in the Caribbean island of Nevis, only about 60-70 miles south of St Martin, where Henry met Jack in DMTNT. In 1757, Henry would be about 27 years old, his parents would be 49, Jack would be 67, and Carina would be 25. Henry and Carina would probably also have children around Hamilton's age group.
Hamilton moves from Nevis to the 13 American Colonies in October 1772, at the age of either 15 or 17. At this time, Henry would be about 42 years old, his parents would be 64, Jack would be 82, and Carina would be 40.
On April 19, 1775, the Battles of Lexington and Concord begin the American Revolutionary War, an 18 or 20-year-old Hamilton enlisting on the side of the Patriots soon afterwards. About a year later, on July 4, 1776, the American Colonies declare their independence from Britain, forming the United States of America. In the latter date, Henry would be about 46 years old, his parents would be 68, Jack would be 86, and Carina would be 44.
On September 3, 1783, the Treaty of Paris is signed, officially ending the Revolutionary War (which was partly fought in the Caribbean) and cementing American independence. On this day, Hamilton would be about 26 or 28 years old, Henry would be about 53, his parents would be 75, Jack would be 93 (if still alive), and Carina would be 51.
In other words, the events and locations of POTC are close enough to the Revolution that at least Jack and the Turners would have still been alive and young enough and lived and worked close enough to meet Alexander Hamilton and his peers and play an active role in aiding him and the other Patriots in the Revolutionary War, at least at the beginning. They could be doing so to help their family friend Hamilton, free Will's childhood home from oppression, and/or, at the very least, spite the British Empire for all the trouble they've caused them in the past. There's even historical basis for the Patriots (and their enemies) using privateers in the War.
That would be an interesting crossover that I'm surprised to see no one write about yet.

Hey! Just wanted to tell you I love all the POTC stuff on here :D The fanfics, artworks, and character scenarios are awesome! I used to have another account years ago when Dead Men Tell No Tales was out, but I got rid of it and started a new one. Kinda wanna share something with you, from one DMTNT fan to another, but, could I tell you over dm? I would rather ask permission to dm you first.
Really? Thank you! Of course! I just saw this! I’m sorry for replying late!

HC question: what does Henry think of his name? His first one and last one. Does he think it suits him, or is it something he gradually grew into?
hmmmmmmmmmm neat question I haven't ever approached it from like, his ic opinion on it before I don't think?
I'm not sure... I don't really think he'd have a suits/doesn't suit opinion about being 'Henry' because it's like. One of those things he just is? One of my sources: just trust me headcanons about him is that he's not very prone at all to like... that thing people are capable of where they think of themselves and their body and their minds and their souls all as like, separate things? And that extends to like. Everything about him is him, and he's neither critical nor vain about himself, he just is. If that makes sense? To be like.... "I hate my hair" or even "I love myself" it too... self-removed? Whereas his approach to self is like. He is. And he trusts that he is. (Which isn't to say he's completely devoid of personal preference, obviously he has his shiny bits and his good luck totems and his tattoos and he prefers comfortable dress over fashionable dress but still has... it's definitely a personal style, anyway. Which prioritizes function but isn't exclusively function based. (Let's be honest there's nothing practical about the necklace. Noisy! Heavy! Capable of being grabbed in a fight or snagged in other situations!!)) I'm digressing but the point I'm trying to work on is: his name is just this sort of irrevocable part of his person, to him, and he no more likes or dislikes it than he likes or dislikes that he is a person. Which is to say, he has no opinion on being a person, he simply is one. If it had felt wrong, and he'd chosen some sort of moniker or ended up with some manner of nickname, I think it would still remain part of him. In a different way, but. I think this is just... some of the way he is. He has been given things, names and tools and treasures, that are simply just part of him. And it doesn't occur to him to really pick them apart into which he likes and dislikes, usually. He's not just called Henry, he is Henry.
.. I've thought it was because "Henry" as a name doesn't nickname easily (and like, with the established nicknames.... he's not a 'Harry' for Obvious reasons and he's definitely not a Hank holy shit scoob) but maybe that's why he doesn't lend to them so easily, actually? He picks up some endearments -and some insults- but nothing that's... especially derivative or unique, like something someone would call only him. And maybe that's why? Maybe we all agree, He's Henry. At least whenever he's not The (Turner) Boy.
[Which as a completely unrelated aside might also be. Part of my "if you're going to ignore dmtnt canon then just don't call the w!llabeth kid Henry then" pet-peeve when it comes to fanfic as well ;sdkfjg;ldkfgj like that is! a whole different child, then!! get 'em a new name with this new identity because that's for sure not Henry you have said so yourself. grrr snarl bark.]
Now depending on where you think the name came from I do also think it's really interesting that. He's potentially named something that -to Elizabeth- is a pirate name. I don't know if this is a me-thing or a fandom-thing (it's. almost definitely not a the-writers thing because he was Henry before he was even Turner so that means they didn't pick it based in these thoughts at all) but I maintain he's named after Henry Morgan, and some of that has to do with Elizabeth's childhood infatuation with pirate stories, and some of it has to do with her adult appreciation of the Code and captaining. And because she was not going to doom her child to whatever blatant curse my live on the name ".William Tu.rner" that consigns a man to be cursed and killed and claimed by the sea (though some things are at least somewhat inevitable, apparently). And so while Henry might not... well no he probably knows and has thoughts about that but like. While Henry wouldn't necessarily find a reason to like or dislike his name there, it is interesting to have his name tied to intentionally and specifically to piracy and infamy and the code itself.
And he's got a dead man's name for his middle name, Henry James. Which is pure and solidly headcanon (and let me tell you how often I run into 'Henry William' and 'Henry Jack' and, once, 'Henry Weatherby' which is very sweet but also immensely silly, as a name, and only slightly less unfortunate than 'William Weatherby') and I don't think he exactly likes or dislike that either but I do think it's. maybe a little heavy, sometimes. Maybe even a little uncomfortable? To be not just his family legacy but a legacy of shattered possibility. Not in a way that makes him resentful but that definitely makes him conscious of names and lines and loss.
And then like. Can a last name ..not suit you? It has very little to do with you, most of the time, if you think about it. And also everything to do with you, though. Nothing to be mad at or anything there for him, anyway. But I guess maybe it's also heavy in its own way but I don't know that that's purely because of the name he's really just sort of. going to pick that up even if he had always been called Swann. Which, I do think he is, also. And I think he gives it that way sometimes, when it bears being said out loud because someone did something stupid like forgot about it, or acted like it was irrelevant and not literally his largest influence and honest to god a big explanation about the way that he is. 'Look like your father' this and 'turner boy' that, why is everyone stupid he'll chain you to a sinking ship and let you get eaten by a literal sea monster for his loved ones. (Well. no probably not, he'd find a secret third way, this is his narrative function -to break the narrative rule, to flip a double bird at your catch 22 while he has his cake and eats it too- but if he wasn't an inherent system breaker he would. I stand by that.)
I think this is getting worse the longer I go on let me,,, try to bring it back.
I think his name, which if you ask me is H.enry James Swann-Turne,r with the occasional turn at donning Sparrow wings every now and then, is very. a lot. It's a lot. It carries legends and deaths and love and curses and wind and wildness. And sometimes I think it's a heavy thing to be carrying around, and now and then maybe even a frustrating thing. But I don't think... whether it suits him ever crosses his mind. Because I don't think... I don't think whether or not he "lives up to it" crosses his mind either? Which would maybe ultimately be the question here? Because you know for all the things he sits in the cross section of and all the cycles broken for him and by him, and all the history in all those names you could call him by, and all the sort of... thoughts that might invoke and places that leads him and doors it opens (and doors it closes) the thing about Henry is. He's going to do whatever it is he's going to do. What he decides to do.
And I know I've gone on some extended rant about this before so there is a post about it somewhere but I think part of the reason he's so able to be that way and have the confidence he has is directly because of the way he was raised, and the effort his parents went through not to slough all of their traumas and fears onto him, not to set some impossible standard for him to strive for or iron role for him to fit inside. There's this throughline in the franchise about freedom and love and freedom being love, and from that I think giving him freedom to just be whoever he was going to be is exactly the demonstrative love his parents would commit to. The fact that it leads him to grow into the kind of person who then dedicates himself directly to the madness of his family is just... who he is. Not who he felt he had to be —at least not in the way of Living Up To A Name. The conversation of ''only I will'' is a different one. It's an intense name, in some ways. And I think he's aware of the weight it contains, if only because of the way other people have reacted to it. But I don't think he feels... beholden to it? In the way of... something he can fail at being. It's not a thing to grow into it's him. Always has been.
#hmmm i went ''fuck my anxiety i will ANSWER'' but did not consider my relative level of coherency did i#sd;lkjfg;ldkjfg sorry i hope this at all offered insight#there's a light that never goes out ( hc. )#u know sometimes i think ''is it that i have a lot of headcanons or is it because i have an unparalleled ability to murder a word count''#also i got scared of appearing in searches sorry for the weird censoring ;sdlkfjg;dlkjfg

Angelica’s finale gown + announcement
I have thinking of designing musical!Angelica’s finale gown in final of act 2 of my DMTNT musical concept. In the musicalverse, musical!Angelica went on Isabela Madrigal arc where she found her true self (I’ll discuss more about my OST musical concept while under in progress) after the hot mess in OST musical that musical!Angelica gone through, learning to love herself more than musical!Jack and feel welcomed by other pirates in Shipwreck Island. Here, green symbolizes of new start for musical!Angelica and yellow symbolizes her happiness.
I use dresses from 1740s to early 1750s as a refs for this design.
Rest in Peace Angelica, you would’ve love Congratulations, a cut song from Hamilton <3

i love it when I add 400 extra words to something and it's not because im continuing the story but am, instead, rewriting/editing previous parts.
this means dmtnt is at 8k and ive done nothing but tweak some explanations here and there
#i need to make sure that im explaining the lazarus magic right it's not what's keeping jason alive it's what's usually healing him#and augmenting his physical skills just a bit#take it away and he's just a (magical) normal dude#he won't drop dead

and like. to elaborate on that idea of an arc for jack post-awe when his "canon arc" ultimately stops and he is made completely static within the franchise narrative and everything that follows: he is a character who is not made to grow old and die happily in retirement. i've contemplated what jack's canonical death looks like multiple times and his criminal status, his peter pan esque nature, his inability to let go and to continue chasing freedom, chasing the horizon, possessing a compass that points towards his wants and therefore means he's never ever satisfied with what he already has... it always leads to his life being cut short at a certain point. or jack just disappearing one day without trace, leading to everything that is written about him and his life being committed to myth and story. nobody ever knows whether he was even real. ( gibbs writes his biography, which also implies that he outlives him )
but it's also interesting to think of how the trickster is transgressive and jack is a subversive creature, and how he could also break out of an archetypal ending. he could learn to find peace after the trauma of the locker ( since that doesn't just go away after awe ). he could learn to accept that peace and quieten his restless spirit, at least to the point where he no longer needs to chase danger to a self-destructive degree ( jack will always need excitement and stimulation and freedom, nobody is debating this lmao ). he could also shed the name captain jack sparrow, something that exists on its own and is much bigger than himself and will exist long after he is gone, in favour of a life where he is seen and loved and happy, in whatever form that might take. and that's why i think that words like "retirement" and "a quiet(er) life" are not actually so out of the realm of possibility where jack is concerned, and is something i like to strive for whenever i'm plotting more in depth post-awe and also post-dmtnt
#&. don’t ever insult captain jack sparrow in front of me ( ooc. )#the writers will never take him in this narrative direction so i get to decide what i want lmao#anyway idk what this is this is just me musing on what they could have easily played with post awe#locker trauma will always be a part of jack's life. it will never just go away#and there's a real opportunity to explore how that influences and changes him going forward#in an arc where he has the love and support he needs to process that trauma. and in arcs where he doesn't or where it takes longer#for him to get to that point of self-realisation#&. depths few had ever begun to glimpse ( meta tag. )

your DMTNT rewrite idea has been stewing in my brain and ofc I keep coming back to Carina at the end of it all, and then your Pirate!Carina art jumps me and I start daydreaming about what her life would be like now that she’s stepped into the pirate game with her dad(s) and I start thinking about what kind of reputation she would have and THEN I realize that if she has a reputation she would ofc get a cool moniker so I started thinking about THAT and now I have like five tabs open and a brain with a web made of thumbtacks and strings.
i thought it could be something Finch-like. Bird motif because of Jack. I found out there are red Finches (secret Barbossa ref?? idk I’m spitballing) and most importantly— Finches are smarty-pants birds like our resident smarty-pants Carina :3
i love her. i spent way too much time on this haha
wahhhh I love the idea of her getting a bird motif of her own that's so cute 😭😭 I'm glad you're seeing the vision anon she's my special special girl and I love her

Barbossa really is the most dynamic character in the Pirates movies. Will and Elizabeth certainly changed but it wasn't any big hero to villain or villain to hero arc. My poor decision-making skills decided to watch the last third of Dead Men Tell No Tales. It's also late out which didn't help. this is a rant born from watching DMTNT.
He starts the franchise as a villain with genuine motivations but a villain nonetheless. But when he returns in DMC and AWE, he becomes an anti-hero. He works with the heroes but isn't as altruistic as Will or Elizabeth. In OST, he's still an anti-hero but his relationship with Jack has improved. By DMTNT, he's gotten everything he's ever wanted regarding a wealthy life. However, learning about Carina really makes him do a 180. Despite being a hardened person on the outside, he does have good inside of him and genuinely cares about her. At the end of the film, Barbossa becomes a fully-fledged hero in my eyes when he gives his life for her. I do appreciate that his core personality is kept pretty consistent throughout each film. He's a pirate with a sharp tongue. Jack is his rival but he does grow a soft spot for him. And he isn't afraid of getting his hands dirty. I love him.
He was this franchise's redemption arc character and I loved it.

made-up fic title - Gold in the Sea
i have a whole section on a pinterest board about mermaids and all i can think is that this would be excellent for a mermaid story or au. maybe with a pirate x mermaid ship. i can’t decide if i’d write it in modern times or the golden age of pirates (i am …. not great at writing in historical eras, hence why i never ended up writing my hotd fic). i could make an intuition au about this.
to make it a fandom oc fic, potc oc, probs will x elizabeth x mermaid!oc ship. long oneshot about their relationship, the oc as the connection between land and sea for the times when will is on the dutchman pre-dmtnt, the ‘gold’ we found along the way is love, okay!?
