Lateralus
Now, as with all of these upcoming posts, I remind you that the full storytelling playlist can be found at this link, in what’s intended as a master spiral of tracks trying to represent as much of the story symmetry and character growth of SPN as possible.
The sixth track in the Holy Gift order (following Mantra) is Lateralus, the title song, which you may remember my early release of immediately after episode 300.
I diverged from the sequencing rules for this to play into at least one of the internal rhythm loops that fall into the Fibonacci sequence, as Lateralus had the clearest of them in their surface level lyrics. Given, I haven't fully detailed that process yet, but it'll come out once I have all the posts with a small spotlight to masterpost the project.
This particular video is intended to be a fairly broad wash of storytelling in SPN but does buttress heavily around Dean, bookended at either end by his personal full-circle arcing-plus-growth.
(Tumblr is being stupid about letting me do this normally for some reason so if, for some reason, the video shows as a broken image on your feed, open this post to my actual blog and it seems to work or just use this link to navigate to the video in the playlist. )
Several of the images used in this song derive from the alchemical works of Carl Jung, who sourced many of his theories (including archetype theory into which the anima and shadow are subsumed) from the late alchemical works of the 17th and 18th century.
The use of color imagery is manifold. First, black, white, red and yellow designate the phases of the alchemical transformation: the melanosis (blackening), leukosis (whitening), iosis (redenning) and the xanthosis (yellowing). The latter two colors (red and yellow) were later synthesized into the aurora consurgens or fusion of red/yellow as explicated in alchemical works attributed to Thomas Aquinas: the dawning of the true self.
The basic idea is that the work of transformation begins by reaching down into the shadow of human consciousness and fusing them with the transcendent (beyond) function in revealing the wholeness of the original man.
The series of images related to the feeding of the will and then 'sucking it in,' are basically the same and this idea is elsewhere referenced in this album in 'the grudge's' explication of the saturn motif (which I'll explore once I post the Grudge's spot).
Finally, the spiral which is built from an outward growing spiral regulated by a series of numbers that's known as the "fibonacci number sequence", was also a favorite symbol of jung and the alchemists as representing the circumbulatio approach to the true self. The specific note of "swing on the spiral" also includes that Tool's redefined spiral of "all pairs to 13" swings us back and forth until we learn our lessons in these processes, of communication, transmutation, grudges, whatever else have you, between our divinity while maintaining our humanity.
Black
Then
White are
All I see
In my infancy
Red and yellow then came to be
Reaching out to me
Lets me see
As below so above and beyond I imagine
Drawn beyond the lines of reason
Push the envelope
Watch it bend
Over thinking, over analyzing, separates the body from the mind
Withering my intuition, missing opportunities and I must
Feed my will to feel my moment
Drawing way outside the lines
Black
Then
White are
All I see
In my infancy
Red and yellow then came to be
Reaching out to me
Lets me see
There is
So
Much
More and
Beckons me
To look through to these
Infinite possibilities
As below so above and beyond I imagine
Drawn outside the lines of reason
Push the envelope
Watch it bend
Over thinking, over analyzing, separates the body from the mind
Withering my intuition, leaving opportunities behind
Feed my will to feel this moment
Urging me to cross the line
Reaching out to embrace the random
Reaching out to embrace whatever may come
I embrace my desire to...
I embrace my desire to...
Feel the rhythm
To feel connected
Enough to step aside and
Weep like a widow
To feel inspired
To fathom the power
To witness the beauty
To bathe in the fountain
To swing on the spiral
To swing on the spiral
To swing on the spiral
Of our divinity and
Still be a human
With my feet upon the ground
I lose myself between the sounds
And open wide to suck it in
I feel it move across my skin
I'm reaching up and reaching out
I'm reaching for the random or
Whatever will bewilder me
Whatever will bewilder me
And following our will and wind
We may just go where no one's been
We'll ride the spiral to the end
And may just go where no one's been
Spiral out, keep going
Spiral out, keep going
Spiral out, keep going
Spiral out, keep going
