You’re (Probably) Wrong About J.K. Rowling

So despite being a British person and writer with an adopted trans daughter (sort of), I never weighed in on the matter when British writer J.K. Rowling allegedly said a bunch of transphobic stuff. The reason I didn’t weigh in publicly was very simply this: I couldn’t find the tweet or statement that started it all- the root cause of people’s hatred. Everybody alluded to The Terrible Things J.K. said but nobody was super keen to say what those things actually were. Which naturally led me to suspect that the whole thing was storm-in-a-teacup bullshit- a notion that I also partially derived from the fact that Rowling is kind of a milquetoast who probably hasn’t had a strong opinion in her comfortably middle-class life. If somebody online claimed I’d said something offensive, I’d believe them, because I basically start a knife-fight every time I open my gob. But J.K.? Do me a favour. Of course, I didn’t look very hard to find out what J.K. said, because the other reason I didn’t comment was that I didn’t care all that much. I’m a grown man. My contact with the Harry Potter universe is nostalgically rewatching the films once in awhile and maybe, at some point, playing the new RPG that’s just come out, should I ever have videogame money again. It’s not like I’m super invested in that world on an emotional level, because I only have the normal number of fucks to give about wizard children and the people who chronicle their adventures. So, my plan was to just never mention any of this. And then I stumbled on the comment that started it all by pure fucking chance and it was… so dull and inoffensive that it actually amazed me to the point where I medically had to say something. Yeah. I am literally incapable of shutting my fucking mouth when someone does a stoopid, as it turns out.

“Dress however you please. Call yourself whatever you like. Sleep with any consenting adult who’ll have you. Live your best life in peace and security. But force women out of their jobs for stating sex is real?” (I think the implication of the question mark s ‘er, no thanks’, basically). And that’s it. Nothing even implying that trans women aren’t real women. Nothing suggesting that they shouldn’t be treated with respect. SEVERAL opening sentences reaffirming the rights of everyone to live how and AS WHO they like… and then a gentle reminder that physical sex is real and that some people have actually lost their jobs for saying so, which sucks, because you shouldn’t be fired for stating a biological fact (unless the biological fact is that you just shat yourself and you choose to share it, loudly, at an important shareholders meeting). That’s the whole thing. I mean, there are some follow up tweets about how physical sex-based oppression is a real thing and about how J.K. feels a bit hurt by the trans activist community for turning on women-born-women when they try to address that oppression in the employment sphere. But that’s it. Now, maybe she said worse things later down the line- but these are the tweets that got everybody to dogpile onto her and anything after that point has to be viewed in the context of a harassed writer getting increasingly fed up explaining herself to people who won’t shut the fuck up on the internet when she’d probably rather be doing literally anything else.

So yeah. That’s what everyone’s got their knickers in a twist about. And that’s really dumb. In a world full of genuinely hateful bigots, attacking someone for pointing out that biological sex is a real, separate issue to gender identity and that arseholes have gotten people fired over saying that seems… well, it seems like a waste of energy more than anything else. There are people out there who haven’t actually encountered the source of this lunacy and have just taken the word of Internet Peeps that J.K. is an awful person (‘cause getting to the bottom of shit is difficult and what’s a person to do? Not just parrot the last opinion they saw fart its way across social media?).

Look, folks, folkettes, moustachioed three-titted hermaphrodites and people who identify as attack helicopters (shout out to all my homies at the Rotary Blade Club), there’s a lesson here. And that lesson is that you shouldn’t believe someone’s good or bad because someone on the internet tells you they are. People on the internet are just people, and people almost never have the faintest fucking idea what they’re talking about. There’s also a really, worryingly high proportion of internet ‘personalities’ (so called because they don’t have any in real life) who like to stir shit for the sake of stirring shit. Sometimes these people are easy to spot, because they’re bugfuck-crazy right-wingers in tinfoil hats claiming that everything in the media is a plot to destroy traditional family values (the same ‘traditional family values’ that caused women in the ‘50s to overdose on amphetamines to get the cleaning done and fathers to try and beat the gay out of their children). However, sometimes, the shit-stirrers are just a teeny, tiny bit smarter and will use the genuine disenfranchisement of a group to which they technically belong to cynically elicit sympathy for views that would be obvious bullshit if the person spouting them couldn’t claim to be oppressed. Rule of thumb: beware of anyone who wants you to believe that they have it tougher than the slave who had to clean the poop out of Abraham Lincoln’s chamber-pot hat (Fun “fact”: that’s why Honest Abe’s hat was so tall: he used it as an emergency latrine while travelling and it had to accommodate the prodigious length of his turds). Even if the person is right and they really do have it that tough, the fact that they’re prefacing what they’re about to say by EXPLAINING THAT TO YOU REALLY SLOWLY AND EMPHATICALLY should really be a red flag- a sign that they’re attempting to obfuscate the flimsiness of the actual point they’re about to queef out their face-hole. That’s not always the case (duh) but it should put you on your guard.

I can, and will, go further: I have never had opal fruit on me! Oh, hang on, that’s a line from A Bit of Fry and Laurie. What I meant to say was, I can, and will, go further: you really shouldn’t care to begin with if a creator has iffy opinions that in no way impact their work. You shouldn’t even care too much if they’ve actually done terrible shit. Because at the end of the day, the only part of them that’s relevant to you is the work they’ve created. T.S. Elliot was one of the greatest poets to have ever lived… but he was also a raving fascist. Lawrence Olivier was one of the greatest actors of his generations… but also a barely-functional alcoholic who delighted in fucking with his old Cambridge university in ways too baroque and specific to detail here. Frank Miller: amazing graphic novelist; protest-hater and all-round tosser. Don’t even get me started on all the shit Thompson and Bukowski got up to (though not together… I’d love to see that buddy movie, but it wouldn’t accurately reflect reality). There isn’t a composer in the whole world of prestigious, important classical music who wasn’t, on some deep level, a really fucked up person. Francis Bacon rates as one of the greatest artists ever to have been spat out by an uncaring world, but he also systematically ruined the lives of everyone around him, including himself. My point is that you can’t demand your art and media comes exclusively from good people… unless, of course, you’re comfortable exposing yourself to a pitifully small sliver of culture and starving your brain into grey fucking wallpaper paste. Trust me, if you have to seriously consider your options on that one, it’s alarmingly close already. Allow the personal and private failings of creators to be personal and private- even if the creator’s an egotist who keeps bringing it up in public. Accept that, for you, the work is what matters because YOU ARE NEVER GOING TO MEET THIS PERSON OR HAVE ANY IMPACT WHATSOEVER ON THEIR LIVES AND THEY ARE NEVER GOING TO MEET YOU OR HAVE ANY IMPACT ON YOU OUTSIDE THEIR WORK.

ADDITIONAL: Okay, so having posted this, I decided I was curious enough to check out JK Rowling’s twitter feed properly. And, to my amazement, I might have jumped the gun when I called her a milquetoast. She actually has some pretty strong opinions,,, but none of them seem to be about trans people in general. She had a go at Nicola Sturgeon for putting a PENIS-OWNING RAPIST OF WOMEN IN A WOMEN’S PRISON PURELY BECAUSE HE CLAIMED TO BE A WOMAN, but that’s not transphobia, is it? That’s an issue of protecting prisoners without penises from being raped by prisoners with penises. The whole ‘is Prisoner A trans or not’ issue is just obfuscation being used BY A RAPIST to get into a situation where they will have the opportunity to rape more people. While JK’s phrasing might leave something to be desired (if you’re the kind of person who needs every phrase to be padded to sooth your ego), “don’t let physically strong penis-owning rapists near vulnerable vagina-owners in an environment specifically designed to make escape impossible” shouldn’t be a controversial thing to say- and has less to do with trans rights than it does with just... common sense, I guess. Look, I’m neither a TERF nor a trans rights activist, though I know people who are both vulnerable women and people who are trans. I am the fucking Neutral Zone between the Federation and the Romulans here, but could we please all agree that miminising the risk of rape in prisons shouldn’t be controversial?

Preston Garvey and Asexuality

Alrighty folx, I have had notes for a post scattered about for a while now, just waiting to have the time/energy/motivation to write it, and what it turns out I needed was an impetus. I recently watched Oxhorn’s Preston analysis on YouTube (I know, I know three years late! I KNOW), and while I’m not here to drag him because his analyses are always generally on point, I took some of his notes about Preston’s character and romance to my core, which is what I’m here to talk about. 

For those of you all who don’t know me, or who haven’t known me for very long: Hi, I’m Allison and I am asexual.  It’s taken too many years to learn that about myself, especially when we’re baptized in hetero- and allo-normativity as soon as we’re born.  I’ve especially found that media is particularly bad about portraying asexuality, and that people often react to it in a negative way because they don’t understand it.   

While no doubt unintentionally so, Preston is one of the first romanceable video game charactes who felt like true representation to me.  I am sad that I didn’t play this game when it came out because of that.  Of course I have my ace!Preston headcanons, but watching Oxhorn’s reaction to Preston’s romance made me realize that the way fans react to Preston is also so relatable and I just really wanted to talk about it.  I’m going to put the rest behind a read more to save everyone’s feed. 

I’m not going to lie, I was surprised when Oxhorn’s video went from an amazing, in depth, and on-point analysis of Preston’s character to an explanation as to why Preston is not an attractive romance option.  I was waiting and expecting the typical “oh, he’s too nice” or “oh, he’s so boring,” or “RADIANT QUESTS.” And those reasons came, but the initial explanation he provided is the following (paraphrased because I can’t bring myself to rewatch the video to find it):

Preston is one of the most admirable men in your entourage, and that's what makes him unattractive.  It's good to have someone love you because they admire you and what you do, but it's better when someone loves you because they crave you.

He goes on further to explain how Preston seems to “overlook” all of those “physical,” “animalistic” components that are “essential to romantic love.”  He also says that his sincerity and devotion to the Minutemen make him feel as if he is not a very well-rounded person, and therefore he could not possibly be good at loving another human being (Lol WHAT?).This is followed by a montage of all of Preston’s Lover’s Embrace lines as proof of his lack of understanding of romance. 

Again, I’m not here to blast Oxhorn.  I really like a lot of his content, and I honestly don’t blame him for making these assumptions.  For some 99% of people, those would be fair assumptions to make; however, the very things he criticizes Preston for in love, are the things that make him one of my all time faves.  

In talking to a buddy about this, the point came up that there is always some sort of self-representation in the characters that become “those” characters for us, and the reason that I choose to romance Preston is not because he’s a beautiful man (he is, but so are other characters!).  It’s because to my eyes, Preston loves how I love. 

Asexual folx often get a bad rap for being frigid, boring, unaffectionate, standoffish, undateable, naive, weird, alien, robotic, and any other adjective I’ve heard thrown at me and other aces over the years.  People who experience sexual attraction react viscerally when someone is not sexually attracted to them. It feels like an affront. How, after all, can you love someone and not be  sexually attracted to them?

Lack of sexual attraction, however, does not mean lack of physical attraction, romantic attraction, emotional attraction, sexual desire, or sexual behavior (at least not for all aces.  Some people are repulsed by sex, but others are indifferent or even favorable to having sex!  It’s just an activity that people who date sometimes do, right?)  Anyway, the lack of sexual attraction or even the lack of desire to have sex does not mean that asexual people are unaffectionate, undateable, or that they need and want companionship any less. It also doesn’t mean that they are incapable of loving other people and meeting their needs too. 

So, anyway, back to Preston....

I knew that I was going to romance him when I first met him.  Actually, I worried that he wasn’t romanceable when I first met him and had to rush to the wiki to make sure that he was.  He just gives off ace vibez.  While it’s not a solely asexual trait to be attracted to someone based off of who they are and what they do, rather than “animalistic” reasons (honestly that comment is offensive to allosexual people too.  I date an allo person and he is not like that??), I could immediately tell that Preston would be that kind of person. 

In completing his romance, the flirt option we get is to give him a compliment, to tell him that you learned to be a good person from doing what he does. You don’t make any suggestive remarks, winky winks, or anything.  And all of his affinity talks are him telling you how awesome he thinks you are.  (It can actually become somewhat of a “you,” “no you,” “no you,” “no you to infinity” type deal sometimes which is cute af). 

Then when you ask him if he’s ever thought about being more than friends, he says “If you’re asking if I’ve ever thought about you romantically, the answer is yes.” Romantically. Which you may take it for what it is OR you may take it as this being a man who hasn’t envisioned you naked.  He hasn’t thought about what it might be like to sleep with you (aside from literally sleeping with you).  This is someone who admires you, who wants to be with you because he thinks you’re like, the coolest person ever. You make him happy. (Again, none of this exclusive to ace people, but it is pretty characteristic of ace-spec people who have romantic attraction). 

Preston is surprised that you love him back. Oxhorn’s theory is that he feels unworthy of the affection of his personal hero, which I agree with. I also think that it can be attributed to the fact that he’s not accustomed to being “enough” or for having enough to offer to a romantic partner. Another rather ace-spec characteristic. 

Something that also stood out to me, which Oxhorn used as evidence of his boring, lack of animalistic desires, is the fact that only one of his Lover’s Embrace remarks could even possibly be construed as sexual in nature. “Mmm. That was nice.” Which could mean the sharing of a nice, intimate moment with the person he loves OR just a good sleep. That man does not sleep enough, and you can’t tell me he does.

All of this to say that I am clinging so hard to this asexual headcanon because it means a lot to me, and it’s important!  I didn’t really realize how much until I watched this video that basically used arguments against Preston that have been lobbed at me throughout the years. (And this is not even to mention all of the “one-dimensional character,” “nice is boring” remarks that Sent Me). It made me feel some sort of way and I wanted to talk about it.  /End Rant.

does john mulaney’s nerflix comedy special comeback kid count?? if not, probably nightmare before christmas way back around christmastime

6) If you have a pet whats their name?:

four dogs: pheonix, kino, midge, and bess; three horses: little man, gem, and andy (ironically i’m allergic to dogs and horses, and my dad keeps buying more)

7) If you have siblings how many?:

one, my older sister

8) Favourite thing to do on a weekend:

i love doing my swim lessons and seeing all my kids!! i haven’t been able to lately bc of the weather,

i only talk to @cheesyramynry on a daily basis, but i have a lot of blogs that i consider friendly acquaintances or casual friends as well!!

10) Favourite thing about yourself:

i value my compassion and empathy above all else; i am very much the mom friend and love to be it

ah i have so many; i think rn i’m gonna go with this past christmas, bc it was my last one with my grandfather

12) 3 weird habits:

swallowing gum, taking all my pills in descending size order, i tend to mimic how a singer sounds when i sing along to the song (ex: if they have a british accent, i’ll subconsciously sing in a british accent; if they stress certain syllables in certain ways, i’ll do it too)

13) What would you call your style?:

comfortable (stretchy jeans, t-shirts, hoodies) and with a few signature Gay Things (jean jacket, flannels, oversized mens’ button ups, a couple gay/bi pride shirts)

14) Odd talent:

if i have lyrics in front of me to a song i’ve never heard before, i can predict the pattern of the tunes and rhythm and sing along the first time

15) Do you have a tumblr crush?:

literally all of aroha and all of the sk fandom (y’all are the loveliest fandoms i’ve ever been a part of)

I’ve decided that in celebration of Stray Kids pre-debut album I needed to create a tag. The ultimate goal for The Stray Kids Tag is to learn about your Tumblr mutuals, and have fun answering the Stray Kids related questions!  Here we go:

1: When did you decide to join the Stray kids fandom?

i saw a thread of information abt the suspected nine members before they were officially announced and was like ‘yes i must stan them and love them with all of my heart.’ so uh,,,,, back in august or september??

2: What is your favorite episode of Stray Kids? uhm, i’m gonna expose myself rn and let y’all know that i’ve never actually seen a full episode of the show; as soon as i heard it was gonna be a survival show, i knew that i couldn’t watch it bc my heart was too weak and i was emotionally incapable of becoming too invested while watching it; but from clips, i quite like the episode with the 3:3:3 mission, and also the last episode when all nine were reunited and told they were going to debut together

3: Who would you say is your bias in Stray kids?

my initial one was chan, and they i got rlly confused, and then slowly came to realize that it was jeongin (anything else after that is a fucking mess)

4: Who would you say is your bias wrecker in Stray kids?

literally kill me all of them bias wreck me so hard bUT hyunjin, jisung, seungmin, and chan have been wrecking me so hard in particular lately

5: What line would you want to be apart of in Stray kids? uHHH not dance line bc swimmers have 0 coordination on land; i quite like singing even tho i’m not good at, so probably that, but i can also hit all of chan’s english rap parts in 3racha songs, and keep up with lafayette’s raps in hamilton, and a lot of the english rappers i like too so uh,,, sign me up for rap line too

6: What is the first song you heard of Stray kids? hellevator

7: What is the first song you heard of 3racha? i think it was either hoodie season or runner’s high

8: What is your favorite song on their pre-debut album?

young wings or school life or yayaya (or grr or 4419 or glow or hellevator)

9: What is a concept you’d like to see Stray Kids try in the future?

i love their current optimistic and slightly rebellious teenager concept rn bc its an Eternal Mood; but i always love myself a soft boyfriend concept 

10: if you could meet with the members of Stray kids for one day what would you say to them?

how proud of them i am, and how proud of themselves they should be; i would tell them about how they’re saying things that resonate deeply for their fans and i love that they’re talking abt real world problems; i would also make sure to tell them (chan and 3racha especially) to make sure to rest more, and eat well, and take care of themselves emotionally as well as physically; and finally i’d like to tell jeongin how wonderful he is and that he’s doing so much at such a young age (lmao he’s actually eight months older than me but that’s no the point) and to never lose his cute little smile
