art idea: icemav in the stands at one of bradley’s baseball games (elementary, middle, or high school — i feel like he played for a while). i would love to see them in baseball caps, cheering, with sodas and hot dogs and the whole nine yards.
i love icemav doing different activities (especially on romcom esque dates), so if that jogs anything either, i’d love to see it! thanks for making such great art.

Always With You
Request: Hi
i was wondering if i could plz request a mav x daughter reader
maybe mav finds out his daughter has separation anxiety or just really doesn't like it when she can't put eyes on him. like Iceman and mav are talking about her "symptoms" and Ice points out the possibility. So mav has to find a way to reassure his kid that he isn't going anywhere and that he won't leave her.
I know this can be a touchy topic and if you state somewhere that you don't write for it than i apologize i don't want to make you uncomfortable so please only do what you are comfortable with
<3 much love and i hope you have a wonderful day
Pairings: Maverick x Daughter!Reader
Warnings: angst, fluff, separation anxiety

Y/N wasn't a clingy person, to say the least. She had always been a very independent person. She didn't start being clingy until her, dad, Maverick, and Goose were in an accident, 10 years after the first one, and she came to the hospital with Carole to be with them. From there on she would not let Maverick out of her sight. When the first accident happened she didn't think anything of it since she was too young to know. It came full force when the second accident happened and she was 12 years old. She would be fine at school since she had distractions but once she saw her dad or in his presence she was not leaving the room.
Maverick never really caught on to this since he was still young himself and not very observant of emotions. He was enjoying having her practically clinging to him but couldn't see it was a problem that is until Ice brought it up but he just brushed it off. Ice picked up on the behavior almost immediately because he was observant of emotions and he absorbed loved that little girl, even if she was a Mitchell. Ice first noticed it when he was left in the room with her and Maverick had walked out to take a phone call and see freaked out. He tried to tell her that he was coming back in just a few minutes but she was not having it. She wouldn't settle until she had set her eyes on her father.
It was during work and when everyone was at lunch when Ice decided to bring his concerns up to the father of the little girl. He thought it was safe do so since it was just him, Slider, Maverick, and Goose. He didn't know how to bring it up the father but figured he would just cut to the chase. After Maverick and Goose brought Ice and Slider home they all became friends but still liked to pick one another. So, he made sure nobody was around.
"Is everything going ok with Y/N?" Ice asked out of blue. It stunned both the pilot and the RIO. Ice waited patiently.
"Yea, everything is going great with her. She's doing well in school and during well in her sports. She's happy as can be." Maverick told his wingman before he took a bite of his lunch. He swallowed "Why do you ask?" Maverick asked him.
"I've noticed some things going on with her especially when you're not around. I think she has separation anxiety. She's showing symptoms of it." Ice said and took a sip of his drink before he could speak up again Goose spoke up.
"Now that Ice said something. I've noticed it to." He said and this caused a confused look to come across the young pilot's face. Slider nodded in agreement.
"What do you mean?" Maverick asked honestly since he doesn't see what they're seeing. She has always been happy around him and hasn't show any distress.
"Whenever you're not around she almost goes into panic mode. She begins to frequently look around and starts to get fidgety. She basically shuts down. She also asks where you were." Ice said completely abandoning his lunch along with Slider, Maverick, and Goose.
"How come I've never noticed it?" Maverick asked to nobody in particular but Slider answered it.
"It's probably because she doesn't want you to see it and she drops it and relaxes when she is in your presence again." Slider said and everyone was quiet.
"What should I do about it?" Maverick asked now concerned for his little girl. He had completely lost his appetite. He looked at his friends with pleading eyes.
"I would first talk to her about it and reassure her that you won't be going anywhere and that you're safe with us. If she needs to, she can come to any of us at anytime. She has everyone's numbers. I would also maybe talk about getting her in therapy." Slider spoke up and everyone nodded in agreement.
"Ok, I guess that would be a start." Maverick said
"It's a good start." Goose said slapped his friend's back. Another conversation was started and lunches were resumed except Maverick. He wasn't listening to anything and he didn't want to eat. The day went through like normal, thankfully they were done flying for the day. The day ended and everyone went home.
Maverick headed to Y/N school since it didn't let you for another 10 minutes. He needed to see this for himself so he parked in the parking lot with the other parents. When the doors opened he got out and walked up to the front stairs. He got many stares from the parents and some even flirted with him, how could they not? He was in his khaki uniform and he had that charming smile. He wasn't really paying attention and any flirting her politely turned down. He was just waiting for his little girl and when he found her with Bradley, they usually walked home but he decided to pick them up and he also let Goose and Carole know, he also wanted to watch her movements. The movements were jerky and she was looking around she seemed tense. She also wasn't smiling and if she did it didn't go to her eyes.
When she noticed her father standing at the steps all of those movements, tense shoulders, and nervous looking around stopped and she smiled and it reached her eyes. Maverick knew what Ice, Slider, and Goose were talking about. She and Bradley reached Maverick and smiled. "Hey, Dad what are you doing here?" Y/N asked and he smiled and hugged her and let go.
"Hey Maverick." Bradley said and gave him hug and then let him go.
"Hey guys. To answer your question, I figured I would pick you up today since we got done with teaching and flying. Goose and Carole already know I'm driving you home." Maverick said and not telling them the truth. He wanted to talk to his daughter privately. They turned and they walked to Maverick's 1998 Ford Explorer. They all got in and Maverick started the ignition and started towards their homes. Maverick dropped Bradley off and noticed that The Bronco was in the drive so he knew Goose was home.
Once Maverick and Y/N arrived home he put the car into park and shut the engine off and they got out. Maverick noticed that she was sticking to his side and would not move from him, even when they got into the house. She dropped her back at the front door and they each took off their shoes. It was silent and Maverick decided to break that silence. "How was your day, sweetheart?" He asked and she smiled at him when she stood up from her bent over position.
"It was good! Nothing really exciting as usual." She said with a chuckle, which Maverick loved hearing.
"That's good! I'm surprised they don't have you practicing today." He said to her.
"They said it was way too hot and they would postpone it for Saturday morning when it's cooler out." She replied and nodded in understanding and was glad the school was looking after the kids.
"I'm gonna go and change and then get supper started. Sound good?" Maverick asked his daughter and he saw her smile drop but then quickly put it back up.
"Um yea. Sure. Sounds good." She said nervously. He nodded and walked away towards his room and once he got there his smile dropped, why didn't his little girl speak to him about it? He had just put on sweatpants and was taking his shirt off when she walked into the room and sat on his bed. He turned around to face her.
"Everything alright?" He asked her and she nodded. She had changed into something more comfortable. He put on a T-shirt and a hoodie and went and sat down on the bed next to her and she turned towards him.
"Yea of course!" She exclaimed to her father and he knew it was time to talk to her about it.
"Sweetheart you know you can come to me about anything right?" He asked her and she nodded "Uncle Ice brought something up to me when we were at lunch and it was about you. He thinks that you have separation anxiety." Her smile dropped. He took that as a sign to continue "He told me that you're not around me and that you almost go into panic mode. He said that you begin to frequently look around and start to get fidgety. He also told me that you shut down and that you ask where I'm at. Goose and Slider have also noticed it as well." He said what Ice told him and what he say and she was silently looking down. "I also noticed when I was waiting for you at school. Talk to me, Sweetheart." He said and lifted her chin seeing tear tracks.
"He right. I'm sorry for not talking to you about it. You had a lot on your plate with teaching and just your job in general." Y/N started "It started after your accident that Goose and you had. Carole brought Bradley and I to the hospital to see you guys. Seeing you like that made me realize that I could lose you. I figured that if I'm with you at all times you wouldn't go anywhere. That I wouldn't lose you. I don't want to lose you, Dad." She sobbed out and he hugged her.
"Oh, sweetheart. Everything is ok and I'm ok. I'm not going anywhere anytime soon. If you feel like this anytime I'm not around you can call me and if I don't answer then you have Ice's, Slider's, and Goose's numbers and you can call them anytime because I'm usually with them. If you want I can get you an appointment with the on-base therapist and you can talk to them any time. They know how to deal with these situations and teach you some tricks." Maverick told her as he pulled away from her.
Y/N nodded. "I think that's a good idea." She said. Maverick hugged his daughter again.
"I love you, you know that right?" He asked her into her hair and he felt her nod.
"Yes I do and I love you too." She said and pulling away and smiling at her father while sniffling. Her smiling made him smile.
"I'm not going anywhere. Now let's go get dinner cooking." Maverick said and she nodded I'm agreement as both of their stomachs growled and that made them laugh.
They got off the bed and headed downstairs towards the kitchen. Where they started making dinner together and joking around. Y/N just had to be reassured that her father wasn't going anywhere and now that she knew that she could rest easier. She was definitely going to take up the offer of seeing the base therapist. Everything was going to be alright.

Know You’re Not Alone - Patience Series Part Six
In which: Mav and Ice would take care of everyone if they could, but they’ll settle for caring for the people they can.
Word count: 3839
A/N - again this came our way longer than I meant for it to, but I’ve been waiting to actively have Jake in the story since I introduced Natasha. So here we are. Still pretty angsty, but with a couple fluffy moments too. And as always no beta we die like goose.
T/W - mentions of abuse, I can’t think of any others, but please lmk if you see any
-/-/-/-/-
The weeks between thanksgiving and Christmas are a whirlwind of activity. They throw a small baby shower for Natasha, they invite Sarah, and Jake(who doesn’t show)and Natasha’s case worker. There’s gifts and cake and a good time is had by all.
Two weeks after thanksgiving Natasha’s father is found guilty of manslaughter and his sentence is extended by six years. Natasha doesn’t say anything when they tell her, just disappears to her room and doesn’t come down until lunchtime the next day. Mav can’t even begin to imagine how devastating it must be to find out your father will miss the birth of your baby and the first five and a half years of his life. Not mention the knowledge that by the time he’s released she’ll have been an adult for three years, nothing stopping her from going out and making her own way in the world, though Mav and Ice have both assured her she can stay as long as she needs. But that doesn’t make the situation any easier.
Shopping for presents is a lengthy undertaking, as they’ve never had this many people to shop for before, wrapping takes even longer. Mav lacks the patience to do it well and Ice rewraps at least half the things Mav does.
Getting decorations and the tree up is an event unlike any other year. They have Christmas music playing louder than they should, everyone talking and laughing while they work. Mickey gets the honor of putting the star on top of the tree, with assistance from Ice.
No one has been able to contact Mickey’s dad yet. Last Mav heard his squadron had been MIA, but he’d been assured they were doing their best to find them and bring Mr. Garcia home. Ice has been using his many contacts to keep updated on the situation.
A week before Christmas they get the call informing them that Bob’s mom is being discharged from the rehabilitation center. She’ll be by in the evening to get Bob.
Mav struggles to be happy about it. He knows it’s a good thing, a great thing. Especially this close to Christmas. Bob will be thrilled. But Mav has grown attached to him, loves him like his own. And if he cries, no one has to know.
-/-/-/-
Laura shows up at seven. Her clothes look too small and her jacket has a hole that showcases the white filler insider. Her hair is shorter than the last time Mav saw her, but she’s smiling when he opens the door.
“Hi.” She says, a little breathless. She glances around, trying to see Bob. Mav smiles and steps to the side so she can come in.
“Hey, Laura.” Mav closes the door behind her, “Bob, buddy, you have a visitor.” He calls. Bob makes his way into the entry, followed by Ice, and grins broadly when he sees his mom.
“Mama!” He throws his arms around her and she kisses his temple, a few tears trailing down her cheeks.
“Hi baby.” She holds him close, running her fingers through his hair. “Ready to go home?” He mutters something into her shoulder and she smiles.
“Hey, Bob, why don’t you get your things while we talk to your mom for a minute?” Mav suggests. Bob nods and runs up the stairs. Mav turns back to Laura, who’s watching Bob with a smile on her face. Ice takes Mav’s hand and gives it a squeeze. “We were wondering if you and Bob would like to spend Christmas with us?” Laura stares at them for several seconds.
“Are you-are you sure?“
“Of course we’re sure!” Mav assures her. “We already bought a few things for him and-”
“We’d like to give you guys a real Christmas, as long as you don’t mind spending it with us.” Ice tells her. She inhales shakily and her eyes get teary.
“Thank you.” She finally says. “I can’t give him anything this year and I can’t even decorate and I’m so afraid of disappointing him more than I already have.” She sniffs and wipes at her eyes, “And I know he’ll be so brave about it, but he shouldn’t have to be.” She pulls Mav into a hug and then Ice.
-/-/-/-
Christmas morning comes quietly in the Kazansky house. None of them are particularly early risers, except Ice, who goes down the stairs and gets breakfast going. Cinnamon rolls, left to proof overnight are popped into the oven beside the turkey, to ensure it’s done by dinner time, and bacon is set frying, coffee drips steadily into the pot and slowly, one by one everyone else straggles in. Breakfast is a pretty quiet affair of bed head and morning breath crowded around their table that is seeming smaller and smaller all the time.
With breakfast consumed they make their way to the living room where they designate spots to each kid, Bradley included, and Mav sinks into Ice’s recliner while Ice plays Santa.
The first few gifts go to Natasha and then Mickey. They managed to find a good balance between things for the baby and things for her and Ice has no qualms about taking all the credit for that despite Mav’s protests. It was hard not to go overboard buying for her baby now that she knows it’s a boy.
For Mickey they found a few toys, some clothes and a couple sensory items they thought he might enjoy.
For Bradley there’s an assortment of practical things they know he needs, a hoodie, a pair of boots, and few more things just for fun, a couple novels, some cds and a large model car building kit.
Laura and Bob show up shortly before noon. Each laden with a small pile of gifts wrapped in newspaper. Laura had knit hats for them all and gave Natasha an IOU for a sweater she’s knitting for the baby.
Ice managed to get his hands on several model planes and Mav wrapped up all the books on planes they had in the house that Bob had flipped through endlessly during his stay, as well as a several new ones. Bob is beyond thrilled to receive them.
They decide to gift Laura some clothes, a feat easier said than done, but with help from Sarah they find some things for her and get a gift card so she can get some things of her own choice.
-/-/-/-
Mav declares Christmas dinner the best feast Ice has ever prepared. And a round of agreements follows. Ice goes pink in the face and Mav kisses him soundly before carving the turkey.
When dinner is consumed Bob and Mickey find a spot near the tree to enjoy their gifts, Natasha takes the landline down to her room, whether to call her dad or Jake, Mav doesn’t know. Ice busies himself packing up leftovers to send with Laura and Bob. And Mav and Laura are standing in the living room watching Bob and Mickey.
“Laura?” Mav asks, gently resting his hand on her shoulder. She turns to him, smiling, hair falling into her face as it’s not quite long enough to stay tucked back, wine glass clasped in both hands.
“Hmm?” He offers her a red envelope. She sets her wine glass down on the end table and takes it, questions floating through her eyes. She opens it and pulls out the card inside, a classic winter picture. She flips the card open and starts to read the note inside, letting the $500 gift card for the local grocery store slide into her hand. She gasps and looks up at him, tears collecting in her eyes again. “This is too much.”
“It’s Christmas, Laura. We want to help you and Bob as much as we can. And if there’s ever anything else we can do for you, please don’t hesitate to call.” She bursts into tears, sobbing into her hand. Mav pulls her into a hug. She continues to sob as he rubs her back gently and it makes him wonder how long it’s been since she’s had someone take care of her.
-/-/-/-/-
When Bob and Laura start pulling themselves together she pulls Mav into a hug and then Ice.
“Thank you. For everything.”
“Of course. Please let us know if there’s anything else we can do to help.” Ice tells her, smiling, arm wrapped around Mav’s shoulders. Laura blinks back tears as she nods. She grabs the bags of gifts and leftovers and takes them out to the car, when the screen door closes behind her Bob wraps his arms around Mav’s waist.
“Thank you.” He says softly. “For the gifts and for being the best family I ever had to stay with.” Mav holds him tight and presses a kiss to the top of his head.
“It’s been our pleasure, buddy. We love you and we’ve loved having you here.”
“We’re gonna miss you, kiddo.” Ice tells him, ruffling his hair. “But we’re really glad you get to go home.” Bob pulls away from Mav and pushes his glasses up.
“Me too.” He smiles brightly and gives Ice a hug before following his mom out to the car.
-/-/-/-
Mickey falls asleep beside the tree, his new stuffed lion held to his chest. Bradley is reclining on the couch, dozing, book open on his chest. Natasha is curled up on the other end of the couch flipping through the book of baby names they’d given her and Ice and Mav are sharing Ice’s recliner. They have Christmas music playing softly, an old record spinning on the turntable brought down from Natasha’s room.
“It’s been a great Christmas.” Mav says, resting his cheek against Ice’s head.
“It has.” Ice agrees. Mav stands with a groan and carefully picks Mickey up, deciding to transfer to him to his bed. Ice follows him up and once Mickey is settled they share their first moment alone all day. Standing in their bedroom, arms wrapped around each other they share a kiss.
“You astound me everyday.” Mav says, smiling softly and tangling his fingers in Ice’s hair.
“You are the best thing that’s ever happened to me and I love you with all that I am.”
“Always have to one up me, don’t you?”
“Can’t help it.” Ice grins, showing teeth, “I’m competitive by nature. And if I’m not mistaken that was what brought us together in the first place.” They stand there a little longer, swaying gently until Mav says,
“Wanna go read?” Ice smiles and presses a kiss to Mav temple.
“That sounds like the best end to a great day.” They had back downstairs where Bradley is snoring like a freight train and Natasha has disappeared. No doubt to her room. They wake Bradley and send him up to crash on what used to be Bob’s bed in Mickey’s room. He grumbles and mutters, but drags himself off the couch and up the stairs.
-/-/-/-
It’s nearing ten o’clock, later than they usually stay up, but their book has gotten too good to put down, when there’s a knock on the door. Ice stops reading mid sentence and lowers the book to look at Mav.
“Who the hell would be coming over this late?” Ice asks. The only person who might conceivably visit at this hour is Bradley, but as he’s asleep upstairs they’re both stumped. Ice pushes himself up out of his chair.
“Hmm.” Ice sticks his finger in the book to mark their page and takes it with him as he turns the corner. He flicks on the yard light and pulls the door open. A teenage boy is standing there, a back pack and a trash bag at his feet. Dried blood runs from a cut above his left eyebrow down his face and neck until it disappears into the collar of his coat. A coat that is clearly too short in the sleeves. There’s a very obvious hand print on his cheek and his left eye is definitely starting to swell and bruise. He sniffs and wipes his nose on his sleeve.
“Can I help you?” Ice asks.
“‘M lookin’ for Natasha Trace.” The boy says. “Sir.” He tacks on at the end. “‘M her boyfriend.” Ice’s brows shoot up. Mav had told him a little about Natasha’s boyfriend after he’d taken both him and Natasha to the anatomy scan for their baby, but the image he’d conjured in his mind is very different than the boy at the door.
“Oh. Well, why don’t you come in.” Ice steps aside and let’s the boy in. “I’ll go get Natasha.” Ice turns toward the stairs, leaving Jake in the entry way. As he walks by the living room entry Mav gets his attention.
“Who was it?”
“Natasha’s boyfriend.” Mav clearly has more questions, but Ice waves him off, telling him he has to go get Natasha. Mav rolls his eyes at Ice’s retreating form and hauls himself up off the couch. He steps into the entryway and his heart breaks a little at the sight that greets him.
Jake watches him approach, takes a step back, fight or flight instincts already starting to kick in, while trying desperately to pull his sleeves down and Mav can tell by the way he’s holding himself that his right leg is injured. His back pack and trash bag are sitting on his feet.
“Hey.” Mav says softly. “Why don’t you come into the kitchen? I’ll get you something to eat?” He offers. Jake gives him a scrutinizing look before nodding hesitantly.
Mav leads the way and heads straight for the fridge, pulling out leftovers from their dinner. Turkey and mashed potatoes, as well as assorted sides. He piles a significant portion onto a plate and pops it into the microwave. While it heats he pulls a small gel bead ice pack from the freezer and offers it to Jake who’s standing just inside the kitchen entry, bags held tightly in his hands. When Jake doesn’t make a move to accept it Mav leaves it on the table. Ice reappears with a sleep addled Natasha behind him just as the microwave beeps. Mav puts the plate, a fork and a glass of water on the table beside the ice pack before grabbing Ice and pulling him out of the kitchen so Jake and Natasha can talk.
They’re fully willing to admit, though only to each other, that they try to eavesdrop. They can’t make out any words, only quiet murmuring, followed by the faint thunk of what Mav assumes is Jake’s bags hitting the floor, and then someone crying. Despite how hard Ice tries to stop him, Mav peeks into the kitchen and almost wants to cry himself.
Jake and Natasha are hugging. Jake is clutching her shirt in both hands, face buried in her neck, shoulders shaking as he sobs. Natasha has one one hand in his hair and the other rubbing his back looking on the verge of tears herself.
Ice pulls him back before he gets noticed and can easily read the concern in Mav’s eyes. They return to the living room and sit down together on the couch.
“I don’t know what’s happened, but I’d bet anything he’s going to need somewhere to stay.” Mav tells Ice, holding his hand tightly. Ice hums in agreement.
“For tonight he can sleep on the couch.” Ice says and Mav nods, “Once Bradley leaves tomorrow he can share with Mickey.” Ice lifts their joined hands and presses a kiss to the back of Mav’s.
Natasha shuffles in, eyes red rimmed from crying.
“Is it-can he-um-”
“He can stay as long as he needs to.” Ice answers the question she can’t find the words to ask. “He can bunk down on the couch for tonight and we’ll make some space for him upstairs tomorrow.” Natasha smiles just a little and wipes at her eyes.
“Thank you.” She whispers before stepping back into the kitchen.
-/-/-/-
They make up a bed for Jake on the couch and Natasha helps him clean the blood off his face. Mav leaves two Tylenol on the coffee table beside a glass of water and after saying goodnight to both Jake and Natasha he follows Ice up to bed. They hear Natasha come up not long after and when Ice hears Jake follow her awhile later he decides not to worry about it. Clearly the boy needs some comfort, so going off the assumption that they aren’t stupid enough to have sex in his house, and with the knowledge that it’s not like it would really be an issue if they did(so long as they keep it down)seeing as Natasha is already pregnant, Ice rolls over and throws his arm across Mav’s stomach. He presses a kiss to Mav’s temple and murmurs a goodnight even though Mav is already asleep. It doesn’t take long for him to drift off.
-/-/-/-
In the morning Mav is up first and when he enters the living room to find the pillow and blanket exactly as he left them the night before he turns and goes right back upstairs.
The door to Natasha’s room is open just the tiniest bit, so Mav feels better about pushing it open enough to peek in. Jake and Natasha are spooning, Jake with an arm around Natasha’s baby bump. They’re so young and life has dealt them such a shitty hand. It’s unfair. And Mav finds himself completely willing to do anything to help them, to make their lives any easier if he can. If this is what they need, he’ll let them have it. He pulls the door to and leaves them be.
An hour later the kids start straggling into the kitchen in search of breakfast. Bradley’s hair is wild and he keeps yawning between sips of coffee, and Mickey doesn’t even look awake. Natasha comes in next, declining eggs when they’re offered, disgust clear in her features. Mav makes her a piece of toast instead. Jake limps in behind Ice, left eye swollen almost closed and bruised blue and purple. It looks significantly worse than it did the previous night. He has a Pikachu bandaid on his forehead. He’s dressed in jeans that are clearly at least one size too small, maybe two and a stained gray t-shirt thats about three sizes too big and falling off one shoulder.
He drops into the only vacant chair, beside Natasha, and accepts the plate of eggs and sausage Mav offers him, but mostly he just pokes at it with his fork. Natasha nibbles at her toast while holding Jake’s hand and Mav smiles. He and Ice share a look and he knows they’re thinking the same thing. Mav sets a plate in front of Ice and gives him a good morning kiss, briefly threading his fingers through Ice’s salt and pepper hair.
With breakfast consumed Mickey disappears back to his room, no doubt to enjoy his new toys. Bradley collects his things and heads home, ready for a shower and a change of clothes.
“Do you want some painkillers and ice?” Mav asks Jake. Jake won’t look at him, still pushing his food around his plate. Then he glances at Natasha before finally meets Mav’s eyes.
“Please.” He says, softly. Mav starts to stand, but Ice stops him, stands himself, grabs an ice pack from the freezer and hands it to Jake before he leaves the kitchen to find painkillers.
“I know you probably don’t want to talk, but I have to have some answers.” Mav tells them. Jake looks at Natasha again.
“I promise.” She says softly. Jake turns to look at Mav again.
“Got kicked out of my last home. Didn’t know where else to go. Nat said you’re good and you’ve been taking care of her.” Jake mumbles, looking far more tired than someone so young should.
“We’ve trying our best. And we’d be happy to take care of you as long as you need.” Mav assures him. “We have more than enough room.” Jake’s eyes are glassy with tears and he won’t look at Mav anymore. “I promise.” Natasha smiles, leaning over to whisper something in Jake’s ear. Whatever it is makes the first tears fall. Jake pushes his chair back, stands up and starts to leave. Natasha holds his hand loosely until she can’t. He turns the corner and Mav hears Ice offer him Tylenol.
Ice steps into the kitchen, worry etched into his features.
“Is he okay?” It’s a stupid question, really. It’s quite obvious that Jake is not ok. And probably hasn’t been in quite some time. Before Mav can respond Natasha is up and out of the room. She’s starting to waddle now and it’s becoming increasingly obvious her back bothers her.
“No.” Mav replies to Ice’s question. “Not right now.” Ice sighs and starts collecting dishes off the table.
-/-/-/-
Later that afternoon all three kids are in the living room watching a movie and Ice is in his office. Mav slips upstairs and into Natasha’s room. He grabs Jake’s clothes to look at sizes and when he has a rough idea of what’s needed he leaves again, doing his best to make Jake’s things look untouched.
“Hey,” he says, poking his head into Ice’s office, “I have to run some errands. Shouldn’t be more than a couple hours.”
“Ok. I need deodorant.” Ice replies without taking his gaze of the computer.
“Roger. Back in a bit. Love you.”
-/-/-/-/-
Mav comes back about three hours later with a huge armload of bags. Though there are a few things for other people most of the purchases are for Jake. Mav drags everything upstairs and takes the time to fold all the clothes neatly. Jake and Natasha are still in the living room so slips into Natasha’s room and leaves the piles of clothes neatly on the end of bed, alongside two pair of sneakers.
Later that evening Natasha and Jake go up to her room and find the clothes with a note on top in Mav’s neatest handwriting,
Merry Christmas, Jake. Don’t hesitate to ask if you need anything else.
Jake picks a pullover sweater from the top of the pile. It’s soft and red. He just stands there, rubbing the material between his fingers. He swallows the lump in his throat.
-/-/-/-
“Hey, Mira, it’s Pete Kazansky.” Pete says.
“Oh, Mr. Kazansky! Is Natasha ok?”
“Yes, yes, she’s fine. Ima cruelly calling in regards to Jake Seresin.”
“Do you know where he is?” She asks, urgency filling her voice.
“Yeah, he showed up at our door last night. He told me he got kicked out of his last home and I was wondering if there’s anyway we could be his foster parents.” He can hear the clacking of her keyboard.
“Let me make a call and I’ll get right back to you.” She ends the call and Mav can’t bring himself to anything, but sit and stair at the phone waiting for her to call back.

The dagger squad in Disney world plus Ice
Maverick: would be planning everything, he wants to hit every park twice. They are there for 8 days and have time for everything. He made sure everyone was at the airport on time as in 3 hour early and made sure everyone had snacks and water. He’s also constantly trying to make sure everyone is there, so he makes them were the classic Disney T-shirts with everyone’s callsign on them. He also is the one who decides to get a car for the trip to throw stuff like jackets, shoes, sunglasses, swim suits and other stuff in the trunk of the vehicle. He also is the dad so all his Daggers tend to ask him for food to which he says no to most the time. Even though he’s has everyones stuff, he’s there for himself so he will drink like so and will yell at his daggers also like so.
Ice: Man is not helping Mav one bit. Like at all. He’s the one with a beer in hand as they walk around magic kingdom with no bag and just sunglasses on watching Maverick struggle with all the merch everyone is buying. He’s just there to laugh. He is also the one that is willing to sit out of the ride and look around and book reservations for lunch or dinner at one of the restaurants. He’s also the one when the Daggers ask HIM for food he says sure and tells them to charge it to their Disney bands which is linked secretly to Mavs account.
There are sweet moments where Ice and Mav will watch the fire works or the shows together while the daggers go have fun cause they would care less about the fireworks. (The daggers just wanna get in line and not wait for 50 minutes and the best time for that is fireworks time) Ice also towards the end of the day would help Mav seeing as he’s tired and looks dead. Also Mav and Ice don’t have call signs on their shirts they have mom and dad lol
Phoenix: alright. Only girl. She’s a boss. She doesn’t think like rooster so she denies his “do you need a map” and will follow where she wants to go. She is always being picked on by the boys when ever a princess walks by like “phoenix that’s totally you. A cute princess” she most of the time rolls her eyes but definitely goes up to the princess and takes pictures with them, why? Cuz she’s a bad ass. She’s also the one that love the fast rides. Like rock n roller coaster, or tower of terror, even the Guardians of the Galaxy ride that pulls a few G’s in each turn. She’s also one for collecting those pins. Her and Bob will go up to cast members to trade the pins. She also loves the any water ride.
Bob: Bob is anything but quiet and does accept Roosters map idea and takes one. He’s the one normally guiding Phoenix cause she isn’t the best and so he tells her like “over here is tomorrow land,” “hey look pandora is along that side go to the left.” He is also the one that everyday he has a new Mickey headband. I mean every day. One day it’s the little mermaid and the next he has wall-e on his Mickey ears. He’s also the one that makes breakfast at the condo each morning for them. (Not too Disney related but he does) no one has the soul to say they can get breakfast at the resort so they just accept his pancakes and get on with the day. He’s definitely the reason why Mav is walking around with heavy bags. He makes sure to throw in sunscreen (mav makes sure it’s on everyone) he has hats in mavs bag, he has his two different sunglasses, he has the ponchos in his bag incase one day it rains, he makes mav pack pain killers incase anyone has a headache, he also secretly sneaks in any feminine care for Phoenix cuz that’s what a back seat rider does, he has Phoenixs back!
Payback and Fanboy: These two stick the fuck together. They are always going up to the pair cast members like Mickey and Minnie, Chip and Dale, Sully and Mike, the stormtroopers, just to get sick photos with them. They tend to pair up a lot and drag Coyote along with them too just to pick on him. They are also the ones that will kind of loose the group. Tend to just wonder off. Mostly after food and to try all the churros. They have to try them all. All of them. They are also the dingos who tell everyone to make faces when they get pictures taken during the ride. Or act normal. Or act dead. Lol. They will also be overly nice to the princesses and will get down on one knee and be cheesy. They will also be the ones that will be in the finding Nemo ride and in the aquarium part just staring at the fish talking about how “I’ve definitely swam with that one” and “no Tf you haven’t” these are also the two that are dead asleep on the car ride back to the resort.
Coyote: this man tends to help mav for the first part of the day till mav shoos him away and will then go to Hangman and just chill by his side. He’s just sort of there for the experience. He’s also the one that sings the songs that’s on the speakers as you walk through. He really goes at each song. He’s also the one who has the idea to play the phone Charades. He sucks at guessing but is very well at describing the word. It always makes the 50 minute line waits go faster. He’s also the one that makes everyone stop so he can get a coffee at the Disney Starbucks. He’s also the one that looks at the Disney jewelry. He tends to like it. The bird show. This man the two times he’s in Animal kingdom through the whole trip, he is at the bird show 4 times trying to be part of the show when the cast members asks who wants to join. Sense he’s an adult. They don’t choose him. Ever. He’s been sour ever sense.
Hangman: this man. Always. I mean always. Has the good smelling popcorn in his hands. I mean always. He’s also throwing it at Bob or Rooster. He gets yelled at by ice to knock it off. He’s also the one to take sexy photos of himself in line and make the line go slower cuz of that. He’s also tends to sleep in and maybe joins the group later in the day with Rooster. (If Jake sleeps in Bradley can’t just leave him alone at the resort) he’s also the one that after every day at the park will make everyone get back up to join him at the pool to relax. Mav and Ice tend to like it and get drunk. Hangman will also hit on women in line. “You’re wayyyy to cute to be waitin in line like you are…” or “come on ladies first.” And will let two girls ahead on the group. He also always has a soda in hand. He’s just a soda kind of guy. Everyone also smoochies off of it though. Trying to steal it instead of buying their own. He will only say yes to coyote. He HAS to get the bucket hats at the stores too, he’s a collector. He also goes to the Disney Springs to go on a shopping spree.
Rooster: He’s having a great time though he wished his parents were here. He’s been when he was little with his family. He’s always offering maps to everyone cause he want to hit everything. Even the lame kids tea cup ride. He always crosses out where they’ve been and looks for those cute hidden mickeys. He’s also the one to stay out with ice and mav to watch the fireworks. He’s crying cuz he misses his dad…. Then he’s not. Hangman tends to drag him with him to tower of Terror to try and get pictures without them screaming. Even though Hangman and Rooster stick together they still argue. “This ways faster Bag man.” “No. It’s this way look at your map!” Turns out they aren’t even at that park and they are both wrong. Rooster will tend to also carry a bag for his jacket cause it gets cold later in the day and Rooster hates it. He also will get photos of everything! I mean if the group, the rides, even just some of himself having fun. He also enjoys taking photos with phoenix with the princess. He also enjoys all the star wars walkthrough area before getting on the ride. Same with the avatar rides. He likes looking at the decor and how everything is made. He hates the haunted mansion and tower of terror. Hangman knows this. He knows it well.
Extras:
The group loves to go to the random character shows and just love watching them. The group also takes professional pictures at every park and will make sure they take at least 3 different poses. They also go to Blizzard a beach one afternoon cuz it’s way to hot. They end up getting kick out because Hangman and Rooster are getting a bit into competing.

The past was supposed to stay in the past, but with Goose and Maverick getting into Top Gun, it would seem that it’s repeating itself. No matter what you do, you can never escape Tom Kazansky.

Chapter Seven - Volleyball
♡♡♡
Goose and Maverick had just parted ways in the hall. Mav had gone after Charlie, so Goose left him to it. He was on his way to go take a break by himself for a while, but he is stopped by Slider halfway to his destination.
“Hey, Mother Goose, you got a minute?”
“Uh, sure. I can talk,” he shrugs.
Slider nods once and leads him into one of the empty rooms along the hall. The door remains open a crack, so Goose isn’t worried about this being some interrogation or anything. His mind could run wild sometimes. Slider seats himself upon one of the desks in there, crossing his arms over his chest.
“I saw Maverick last night.”
“Oh?”
“Yeah, he was with someone. Ice was there too. He saw them.”
Goose already knew where this was going. Maverick had called him twice last night. Once at the bar to tell him you were safe and sound. Then again later in the evening to confirm he had taken you home and you were still alright. He mentioned Ice being there and that the two of you had talked.
“Right...”
“Look, Ice is my pilot and my friend. He’s clearly still hung up on them and I just want to see him happy,” Slider confesses.
“I just want to see them happy too, but they’re not. Not really. They keep saying they are, but I see it,” Goose sighs.
“So, help a brother out.”
“What do you have in mind?” Goose asks, wondering what was happening right now.
“Volleyball match. Tonight. Bring your friend, your family, everyone. Friendly game as far as we are concerned. Let Kazansky and Mitchell fight it out if they want to. Ice like the competition. No way he’d go easy with them watching,” Slider grins.
“You really think that’s going to work?” Goose almost scoffs.
“Oh, it will. Then we just them do the talking after. He will want to talk to them.”
Goose nibbles his lip as he thinks about it. He wouldn’t want to set you up like that, but at the same time, why not? Worst case scenario, you throw the ball at Tom’s head.
“Deal.”
The two RIO’s shake on it. They grin at one another and then leave. No one is any the wiser that the two of them had talked. Sure, you’ll probably kill Goose if you ever find out he was setting you up, but he could deal with that.
Maverick and Goose meet up again later. Pete throws a smile over his shoulder as Charlie heads in the other direction, also smiling to herself. Goose just shakes his head at his friend, wondering what they even did in the 30 minutes they were gone.
“You’re behaving right?” Goose grins.
“Trying to,” Mav replies.
Goose gives Mav a pat on the shoulder.
“Hey, listen, I’ve been thinking,” Mav says, turning all his attention to his RIO.
“Uh oh.”
“Shush. I told you about last night, right?”
“You did,” Goose confirms.
“So, we only have a few more weeks before we graduate. Meaning Ice and Y/N have a limited time to settle this thing between them.”
“Mav, what are you thinking?” Goose asks.
“I’m thinking of playing wingman.”
Goose looks around them both quickly. Was Mitchell thinking the same thing as Slider?
“Setting them up?” Goose asks.
“Sure. The man may be my rival, but I can see when he’s whipped for someone. The one that got away. Worst case scenario they walk away hating one another, but the two outcomes we can hope for is they forgive and forget, or they realise no one else is ever going to compare and they get back together.”
“Funny you should say that...”
Mav looks at Goose with curiosity.
“I just spoke with Slider. You up for a game of Volleyball tonight? We invite everyone to come watch. Ice will come if he knows he has to play against you,” Goose grins.
“You and Slider best friends now, huh?” Mav teases.
“What? No! You know you’re the only one for me,” Goose grins.
You’re playing with Bradley when there’s a knock at the door. Carole goes to answer it, throwing a tea towel over her shoulder as she goes. You give Bradley a tickle and he bursts into a fit of giggles. He had been playing with a little train set before you sat down and joined him. The train had been long forgotten in favour of him having your attention for a while.
You look up when someone enters the house. It’s Charlie.
“Oh hey Charlie,” you smile up at her. “What brings you here?”
“Maverick mentioned they were all going down to the beach to play volleyball. Everyone’s invited. Asked if I would come and invite you guys too.”
You look up at Carole.
“We could go,” you suggest.
“Sounds like fun to me. Let me get the little man ready then,” she says, coming over to pick up her son. You smile and get up from the floor too, moving over to Charlie.
“Mav has you running errands for him now?” You laugh.
Charlie smiles, “I was happy to come by. They’re all heading straight there.”
“All?” You ask.
Charlie nods. “I think all the aviators are going.”
“Oh...”
She tilts her head to the side. “Something wrong?”
“No... It’s fine.” You offer her a smile, but it’s not too convincing. You shrug it off. Just because they’re all going to be there doesn’t mean you’ll have to talk to him or anything. You’re going for your boys, and that’s it.
With Bradley on her hip, Carole comes back ready to go. You follow both ladies out, letting Carole lock up, and you get in Charlie’s car. The drive to the beach is quiet.
Mav leans against a table, arms crossed, aviators on his face. He’s watching Ice who is taking to Slider on the other side of the court. Goose is adjusting his shoe right next to Mav.
“This is such a dumb idea,” Mav mutters.
“You thought it was good not too long ago,” Goose says, standing up.
“You realise they’ll kill us.”
“We’ll be fine. You know they can’t stay mad at us for long. Though the thought is scary,” Goose sighs. “We’ll just have fun. If he goes to talk to them, we pretend we have zero interest and just leave them to it. They’ll either talk with each other, or they’ll walk away and leave.”
Mav sighs and takes his shirt off, dropping it onto the table. Just as he does, three figures catch his attention. He smiles at Charlie as she leads the three of you into the court. Goose goes straight over to Carole. You stand there awkwardly watching your friends talk to their partners.
Blue eyes watch you from the other side.
Slider watches Ice casually.
“You good?”
“Yeah,” Ice says, though he’s clearly distracted. He didn’t know you would be coming down here. He watches as Mav turns to you and gives you a hug. You laugh and dodge him, backing away. Mav is laughing too.
“Are you two losers ready?” Slider asks, shouting to the other team.
Goose turns and stares at Slider.
“Hold your horses.”
Carole and Bradley move first and take a couple off seats off to the side. Charlie smiles at Maverick and follows her. You give Goose a high five as you pass him and join your friends. Ice is watching you the entire time. His gaze only breaks from you when Slider gives him a harsh pat on the shoulder. He turns quickly to meet the eyes of his RIO.
“Eyes on the prize, Ice.”
Strangely, his eyes are on you again after Slider says that.
“Eyes on the prize,” he mutters to himself.
Goose and Maverick are ready to play. Slider strips his shirt off and gets into a ready position. Ice decides to do the same. If they’re going to work up a sweat, he’s going to show it. His shirt joins Slider’s off to the side. He picks up the ball. His eyes cast over to you once more. You’re looking at him. Though when you realise he has turned to look at you too, you turn your head away quickly.
He almost lets his smirk show.
You have Ice on the brain apparently.
Ice serves and the game begins.
Carole gives a big cheer when Goose volleys the ball back over to the other side. Charlie smiles as she watches how quickly Mav moves. Meanwhile you are forcing yourself not to look at the other team. Though Slider’s hollers make you want to look over. He cheers every time they win a round. You keep your eyes focused on Maverick and Goose.
You get quite into it after a while.
Both teams are doing so well. It’s hard to determine who is playing better. You begin to wonder if this is what it’s like in the sky. You had known Ice during his academy days, that’s when you met. You had always known he was a talented pilot. The best there was. Now that he has Maverick to deal with, is Mav good enough to be up there with Ice? You would say so.
They’re both just different from each other.
Goose takes a dive, but he saves the ball. Mav volleys it over the net. Slider hits it back. Goose is on his feet so fast and it goes back over. Ice jumps up and gets it, the ball just narrowly missing Mav’s hands.
You find yourself biting your lip.
Ice is out there looking so cool and collected. His mind is obviously focused on the game. Sweat glistens down his face, down his chest... You force your eyes back up to his face.
You can’t be doing this to yourself.
Mav pushes his shades up his nose and claps his hand. “Let’s go!” You hear him call.
Another round.
Goose and Mav score.
Ice and Slider back up and talk to each other. Mav and Goose nod at one another. You wonder what each team is discussing.
Another round.
Ice leaps up and volleys the ball. You can’t stop yourself from watching. Your eyes follow his every move. You don’t even break when Slider hollers again.
There is a brief moment where Ice’s gaze shifts over to you.
You’re watching. This time you don’t look away.
He can still hold your attention like he used to. Now his ego is boosted. Maybe, just maybe, he can have that talk with you. That’s all he wants. A talk.
Slider brings his attention back to the game. Ice serves again.
You’re not sure how long they’ve been playing. It’s been good while thought. Goose calls for a break. They’re dripping with sweat and they surely need a drink. As Slider agrees to the break, you stand up and head over to the barrier keeping you from the court. You smile as you hold out two bottles of water.
Goose and Mav come over, Goose with a towel around his shoulders.
“Thanks,” Mav smiles at you. You smile back. “You enjoying the view?” He asks.
“Oh yes. How can I not? Watching my two favourite pilots dripping with sweat and running around like mad men. It’s my favourite pass time,” you joke.
“Two? Didn’t realise you fancied Slider too,” Goose says after taking a large gulp of water.
“What? Slider? No. I was talking about you two.”
Maverick smirks. “I was talking about Iceman.”
You instantly glare at him.
“Is it so bad?” Carole asks, looking up at you.
“Yes,” you say.
“He’s looking at you, even now,” she says, smiling at you. You don’t want to, but you have to. You gaze up at Ice and see that she’s speaking the truth. You instantly turn your eyes back to Mav.
“You did this on purpose,” you say.
“Don’t look at me,” Mav holds his hands up in surrender. You turn your eyes to Goose.
“You.”
“Me? No! I agreed to it though.”
“Then who?” You ask.
Goose turns his head to the other side. You look back up. Ice is still watching you, but it’s the huge grin on Slider’s face that give him away. You glare at him before turning back to Goose.
“Can you guys get on with your game before I commit a murder in front of everyone?” You hiss. Mav and Goose just grin as they hand their water bottles back over. You snatch them back and go back to your seat, crossing your arms.
Coming here had been a trap.
Ice watches you still, wondering what that was about. There is something strange about the way everyone else on the court was smiling at each other. He narrows his eyes over at Slider, who just shrugs at him, despite him still grinning.
The game goes on.
It gets quite fierce as it goes on. The competition is really getting going. Ice really wants to win over Maverick. You find yourself leaning forward in your seat. Though you had been mad at the boys for what they had done, you also find yourself intrigued. If anything, Ice has only got better over the years. He’s so agile, so fit. He doesn’t take his eyes off the ball.
Slider and Ice win again, and again, and again.
You don’t know if Mav and Goose are just tired or if they’re throwing the game at this point, but Ice can still keep up. You find yourself unable to look away.
They must have been playing over an hour, maybe even two at this point. You had been sat there for quite some time. Maverick checks his watch and calls for the end of the game. He’s tired and hungry at this point. He returns to the table to grab his shirt. Goose comes over to the barrier where Carole hands him some water this time.
You remain seated as you look across the court. Ice wiping a towel over his face. He lets the towel drop around his neck as he picks up his own water. You can’t look away as he gulps some of it down. Little water trails drip down his chin.
No. No. No!
You stop yourself from biting your lip.
Charlie slides past you and steps down onto the court. Maverick comes over and they start talking. You see her nod her head and she makes her exit. Maverick says something to Goose who pats him on the back. All you get is a wave in your direction as he follows after Charlie. You watch him go. Goose vaults over the barrier and sits with his wife and son.
You sigh as you get up. Might as well walk on the beach for a bit. You avoid looking up at Ice as you exit the volleyball court. You walk over to the beach and take your shoes off. You need to relax and get over yourself.
How can one man affect you so badly? Especially after years of not seeing each other?
Maverick was right. You have it bad for him still, but you’ll never forgive yourself. You were the one that walked away. You would live with that fact.
You don’t get very far when you hear your name being called. You stop and turn.
There he is.
Iceman.
No.
Tom. Tom Kazansky.
You don’t make a move to leave. His eyes seem to hold that power over you. He starts to come closer. You remain standing in the sand. You watch him. He comes to stand in front of you.
His lips part. He goes to say something, but he stops himself. He hesitates. Ice doesn’t hesitate. He tries again. Still nothing.
You turn fully to face him.
“What is it?” You ask. Your voice is calm, soothing. You don’t sound upset with him.
“Can I walk with you?” He asks.
You didn’t expect that.
“Uh, I guess so.”
Ice inwardly smiles to himself. This is progress as far as he was concerned. No cushions being thrown at him, no you kicking him out. You begin to walk and he follows.
“Can we talk?” He asks after a few steps.
“If you want to.”
You don’t want to, but you feel this is inevitable. You’ll have to face him at some point. He seems to be everywhere you go at the moment.
“Listen, I... I don’t hate you for what you did. I could never hate you. I just want to know why.”
You don’t look at him as you walk. Your eyes focus on the sand.
“I... I can’t tell you...”
“Why not?”
“I just can’t Ice.”
He almost hates how his callsign sounds coming from you. There was a time where you would only call him Tom. Iceman was who he was at work. Tom was the man you had fallen in love with.
“Do you hate me?” He asks.
You stop walking.
He stops too.
You clench the hand holding your shoes. You can’t bring yourself to look at him. The answer was easy, but could you tell him? What would telling him do?
“Do you hate me?” He asks again.
You lift your head, eyes set on the ocean.
“No.”
In the corner of your eyes you see him relax. He nods his head softly and his tongue darts across his lip. You shift your eyes more and look at him at last.
“Then I can live that,” he tells you.
You don’t know what to say to that, so you say nothing at all. You start walking again and he follows you again. You don’t say a thing. He wants you to. He wants to know what’s going on in that head of yours.
He says your name.
You take a second, but you look up at him.
“It really is good to see you again.”
You find yourself stopping again. He stops in front of you. He watches you as seem to mull over what you want to say to him. You’re thinking. He waits.
“I told myself I would never see you again. I almost want to curse Top Gun for being the reason you’re standing in front of me right now. I wanted to leave you behind and move on. I also can’t help but think this is the universe giving me a chance to close this book for good, just on better terms. I regret that I ended things by walking away while you were deployed. That was a shit move on my part.”
He furrows his brow as he looks at you.
“You would leave anyway?” He asks.
“Yeah. I just took the coward’s way out.”
“Why? Why did you leave?”
“I cant,” you say.
“No, don’t give me that. Tell me why you left.”
“Ice-”
“Tom.”
“Ice, I can’t. Let it go.”
“How can I let it go? You left without a word. You broke up with me without so much as an explanation. You broke my heart,” he confesses.
You bite the inside of your cheek. You couldn’t cry in front of him.
“Please. I can’t.”
Tom watches you closely. This was clearly something you were struggling with. He needed to know, but he won’t do that to you now. He finally got you to talk to him.
“Alright. Do you want to grab something to eat?”
You shake your head.
“OK, then do you need a ride home?” He asks.
Your eyes briefly glance to the court in the distance. You came with Charlie, but she just left with Maverick. Goose was spending time with his family. You didn’t want to bother them. You sigh realising you don’t have any other way to get back home.
“Yeah.”
For the first time that day Ice smiles. You have to look away. His smile was a sight you had missed. His smile lit up rooms, it made your heart race, your knees weak. He was beautiful when he smiled.
“Come on.”
Tom starts to lead you off the beach. You follow.
When you reach the tarmac again, you make him stop while you put your shoes back on. He smiles softly as he waits for you. When you’re done, you follow him to his car. Before you get the chance to even touch the door, he opens the door for you. You glare at him softly, but Ice doesn’t look the least bit sorry. You get in the car. Ice closes the door and makes his way around, getting in the driver’s seat.
Only the sound of the radio fills the car.
