Guide To Plot Development

Where To Start
Start with the zero draft. Honestly, the only thing you need to know about your story in order to complete a solid zero draft is the basic timeline of events and 2-3 main characters. Zero drafts don’t need to include any minor characters, backstory, world building, subplots, anything. They’re just a rough estimate of what your story is going to be and where it’s going to go.
This way, you have something to work with when you do approach the task of maturing your story, which is a lot easier to do when you have already gotten the garbage ideas onto paper, seen them, realized they’re bad, clipped out the good parts, and developed a better understanding of your story’s trajectory.
Placing The Climax
The climax is two things; the apex of built tension and the turning point of the conflict. Recognizing that as a definition makes pin-pointing the climax of your story much easier, especially if you’re the kind of person who likes to start with a solid premise and work forward from there, rather than build a sturdy skeleton and fill in the blanks as you write the first draft. If you’re still having trouble, the climax is usually one of, if not the most exciting parts of the plot, and that comes from anticipating a massive shift in the story.
Outlining For Discovery Writers
I know a lot of people out there will read this article and question whether they can put it to use because they’re not an intense plotter who relies on outlines, character sheets, etc. A lot of writers prefer to let characters grow on their own and the conflict present itself naturally, which is less predictable but very exciting, especially when brand new ideas hit you out of nowhere. If you’re one of these people, fear not. An easy way to settle the slight nervousness that comes with diving straight into a blank page is to write down all of the basic or specific ideas you have in one spot where you can see it all and as you go along, refer to it for inspiration or answers when you hit a snag in your story’s flow. It’s not exactly an outline, but it’s a lead, and it’s worth doing.
Balancing Planning With Pantsing
A lot of writers who decide to take their stories seriously and commit to finishing a large project make the mistake of thinking that means they have to plan like a professional (which, spoiler, most professionals don’t do). What happens in these cases is that writers plan so meticulously for so long that the story becomes... boring. We all get kind of tired of stories when they take up too much of our imagination, but getting tired of a story before even a word of it is written should be avoided.
I have a personal rule that I never give myself more than 6 weeks to plan a story. That seems like a lot to most people, but I also zero draft all of my stories before I plan them, so I never start a first draft with a blank page. I suggest that if you frequently run into this issue, you try this method and between each serious draft, you give yourself at least a month of space from it in order to refresh your mind.
What Comes After Drafting
Foreshadowing, symbolism, subplot integration, and micro-development. These are all examples of things that writers try to plan before their first crack at a draft and end up betraying their ability follow through with writing the story at all. When it comes to complicating the story, these elements all come into the picture much later, when the main plot, character profiles, and structure is solid and ready to be finalized in the interest of moving forward in the writing process. When you’re plotting, shove these things out of your mind. You can’t input symbolism into a story that doesn’t exist, and you can’t develop characters that haven’t been born.
Common Struggles
– The common struggles section of my “guide to__” posts are general questions sent in by readers on the topic at hand. If you have a question that has not been addressed thus far, you’ll probably find the answer in this section. As always, you’re welcome to send other questions to my inbox if you don’t find the answer in this post. –
~ How do I correctly pace a story?... The pace should depend on the genre and point of view, as these things are the framework of every plot. Generally, anticipation should be a slow burn and the big moments should be snappy and explosive, rather than drawn out. The exposition, climax, and resolution should take up the least amount of time in your story, and the rising action should be the majority of the rest of it.
~ What needs to be in your beginning, middle and end?... The answer to this question is answered when you choose a definitive structure model to either follow or build off of. I have a whole post about it here: Plot Structures
~ How can I know if I’ve resolved my major conflict enough?... The resolution of your story should leave the reader feeling satisfied with the protagonist’s overcoming their obstacle, but still leave enough room to anticipate more to come.
~ How should the plot close?... This is entirely up to you, but I would take into account the possibility of a sequel. If it’s 100% a standalone story, give it a clean ending and tie up the loose ends, pat yourself on the back for all of the clever foreshadowing everyone missed, and leave the protagonists and beloved secondary characters’ futures looking bright.
~ How do you write a plot around a theme?... Most stories that have a central theme are born from answering a tough question. George Orwell’s 1984 asked “What would the world look like if totalitarianism ruled society?”. Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451 dealt with censorship and questioned whether bliss only belongs to the ignorant. Bottom line is, pick the theme you want to explore, and then ask yourself the tough questions. The story should be the process by which you find the answer.
~ What is the best way to handle a large cast within a plot?... You have your main conflict and the plotline that surrounds it, and then you have various subplots, around 2-3 where you explore the world/characters further and immerse the reader in the stories. You can convince the reader to become invested in a large number of characters by making them heavily involved in the subplots. They should all touch the main plot considerably, but the bulk of their development should be in the subplot, and if you were to have 15 characters, you’d want around 3 subplots where 3-5 of them were important players. However, large casts that reader’s have trouble keeping up with is a problem that usually results from a writer’s inability to make cuts or combinations. Remember: the reader’s experience is the most important thing. It’s better to downsize your ideas than lose your readers altogether.

These 3 Strategies Turned Me Into a Profitable Author
I’m no Stephen King, but good results is relative, ideal? As a author, I have absolutely experienced more accomplishment than I pictured acquiring by now. A large amount of it, of program, has to do with staying in the right put at the ideal time. Over and above luck, however, turning out to be thriving at nearly anything needs persistence in the experience of rejection and uncertainty.
But how do you persist? Persistence isn’t a character trait. It is contextual. It requires a explanation and a technique. For me, studying to persist as a author is an ongoing journey – but there are a few pieces of advice that have finished more to continue to keep me on that route than the rest put together, and I’m very delighted to share them with you in this article.
2 Crappy Webpages
Tim Ferris is an entrepreneur and writer whose most perfectly-recognized perform is possibly The Four-Hour Workweek. In addition to hundreds of web site posts, Tim has composed five publications, spanning thousands of webpages. In order to meet his own composing targets, he depends on a straightforward strategy: produce at minimum two web pages every single working day.
The capture is that, in Tim’s possess words, people two web pages can be downright “crappy” – as extended as they’re accomplished. He also details out that he does not go into panic mode right after lacking a day, but the total position of this target is to established a typical for results that is on the reduced aspect, making it achievable on a incredibly normal basis.
To me, it is all about acquiring the behavior of frequent composing. Just like reading through, jogging, or making your mattress, the initially times of practice-creating are the most hard. The for a longer period you retain it up, on the other hand, the much less effort it normally takes to retain. When it will come to composing two crappy web pages, it is important to acknowledge that they might not make the cut of your ultimate draft. They may well conclude up in the trash – or they might inspire you in some way you hardly ever dreamed of.
Do not Get it Ideal, Get it Composed
I’ve seen this estimate attributed to unique persons, but there seems to be some amount of arrangement that it rightfully belongs to James Thurber, a prolific 20th-century cartoonist, playwright, and journalist.
At to start with look, this looks nearly similar to the “two crappy pages” guidance, but there is – at the very least to me – a subtle change. “Two crappy pages” is the mantra that will get me to sit down at the pc, but “don’t get it right” is the tips that in fact aids me get through those people two internet pages.
As a profession or aspiring writer, you in all probability presently know also well that perfectionism is the enemy of productiveness. “Don’t get it proper, get it written” is all about putting perfectionistic urges in their spot.
To that end, I advocate disregarding spellcheck right up until you’re prepared to submit or push “publish.” Turn it off, for that make a difference, so these irritating small purple traces never distract you from your objective. Never get worried about synonyms, either, and for the appreciate of all that is great and holy, do not re-read through what you’ve prepared though you are nonetheless drafting.
Though it took me a while to embrace this way of composing, I seen a enormous increase in the velocity with which I could finish a task when I adopted the following strategy:
When I start off a new piece of creating (irrespective of whether an short article, essay, and many others), I initially put down all my scattered tips in a composition that’s somewhere in between define and tough draft. There is no proofreading, no back-spacing, and practically no formatting.
When I’m all set (ordinarily a day or so later) I do the next go, which normally finishes up remaining quite shut to the ultimate draft, only necessitating a handful of re-reads and some light editing.
When I was significantly less professional, I would typically try to begin with a clever hook and craft the perfect piece all the way down to a witty button on the concluding paragraph. It’s not that this can not be carried out – it can – but it would choose me several hours to generate a single 600-word article, not which include research, espresso breaks, or cursing at the blank monitor.
Using outlines and rough drafts permits me to publish the identical amount of money in a significantly shorter amount of time and typically will save me a great deal of stress in the process. Even if this strategy appears apparent to some, there are a lot of us interested in creating who never ever attended a single course on how, so I’m grateful for Thurber’s affect on my comprehension of the great method.
Lifetime Commences at the End of Your Consolation Zone
(This write-up is about what has served me thrive as a author, but if to you, achievement in composing has nothing at all to do with cash, a vocation, or skilled aspirations, then this individual little bit of knowledge may possibly not utilize.)
Finding out of your comfort and ease zone is very common advice in the realm of self-assist and accomplishment, and it may well appear to be totally unrelated to composing. I can assure you, having said that, that it’s not.
Personally, achievements in producing is very substantially about specialist aspirations, and each and every time I turned a huge corner to that results, it was initiated by me stating sure to a task that I felt totally unconfident about.
My most the latest relationship with continuous operate arrived via a startup that employed me to develop content material for a number of marketplace-leading executives. The only difficulty was that I didn’t know anything about individuals industries. Even now, I stated sure.
I wasn’t deceiving any person – my background and competencies were being effectively-regarded to the employer. If they felt that I was excellent plenty of for the job, why should I enable my self-question get in the way? Thankfully, I did not.
Even however my roles and responsibilities at that career continually evolved and were riddled with uncertainty and anxiousness, I acquired more for the duration of my 11 months there than I had in any other year of my professional everyday living. Not coincidentally, I also acquired paid more.
Will indicating sure in some cases land you in predicaments that you are unprepared for? Surely – but that’s the level. You are going to come out the other side with new know-how, new expertise, and with any luck , a feeling of gratitude for the knowledge.
See Also: 3 Composing Strategies to Enhance your Self-Esteem
A Lesson Acquired is a Lesson Figured out
All the ideal tips in the planet will not make you a superior or a lot more profitable writer. Only producing will do that. I’ll be the initially to admit that there have been times – even months – when I realized I need to be composing just “two crappy internet pages,” not stressing about acquiring it correct, and looking for new and probably awkward alternatives, but alternatively sat on the couch sensation sorry for myself.
In other words, all the assistance higher than has been particularly useful to me, but only to the extent that I truly utilized it. I consider it can be helpful for you, way too – so I hope you will put it into apply and discover out for your self.

Week 16 - Alex - Dénouement
--- Opening Thoughts:
Here we reach the end of the story of this project; the final knot, which took so many threads to tie, yet seemed not long ago to be little more than a tangled mess.  This week, our group achieved more than what seemed achievable, given the time constrains and pressure. And although so much could have gone wrong, this was truly a very ‘right’ conclusion to an epic semester-long project. I’m so very, very thankful, and proud, of each and every member of our our group - without whom this film would never have been possible. And I’m honored to have been a part of what may very well be one of the finest films produced here in ACM Animation since its inception. I also would like to give a huge thanks to all the colorists who made the production pipeline go so much smoother and faster - sacrificing their own time and effort to be a part of something amazing! I also would like congratulate our terrific voice actor Justin Bendo, for his incredible work as the voice of Angel. And to our composer Joshua Namba, who breathed life and vigor into our film through his music.
--- Weekly Deliverables
For my work this past week, a lot has happened, as most of our group can probably agree to. It’s difficult to bring to memory every individual thing, but the core tasks were these: Coloring Sq13s6, a shot I originally roughed for. Although the final version would go on to have some major alterations to Angel, I’m happy to see it least one rough of Phantom I did pretty much stuck all the way to final:
youtube
Colored Sq13s16; took a heck of a long time even using pre-programmed inputs for the coloring process. But it turned out good, and due to me needing to use base layers for the characters, Gavin came up with an interesting blending mode for the Old Man which we can see in the final film:
youtube
For the next two shots I finished line from last week, plus color and shading for this week. They turned out pretty good I’d say:
youtube
youtube
We ran into some technical issues when it came to rendering out certain files, and one in particular that comes to mind is Sq9s16, as imaged below.
Tumblr media
I don’t know how it was possible to even work on a file this large on Photoshop, with the hardware we have. It was so big that most of our group’s computers couldn’t even open it. Mine struggled big time to load it, let alone render it as an uncompressed .mov. I had to clear almost all my ram, and even then it crashed before finally managing to render it, which only took around 10 minutes (for one shot mind you,) and then uploading it which took a solid three and a half hours.
This one file almost stopped our whole production. It was amazing, kind of hilarious, and a bit scary, but we managed to pull through. I added a clipping mask to the fire’s lineart to make it orange.
The next thing which ate up a lot of time and energy this week was sound. Basically, I expected have sound done in maybe 5 or 6 hours over the weekend. Turned out it required almost two full days to finalize. Me and Gavin met up to discuss corrections and adjustments, and after some last minute feedback, all the retiming work was done, and we got an incredible audio track. Even though it was a heavy tax on my very tight finals week schedule, I think having those two days to work on it really raised the fluidity and creativity to provide something almost of a remaster to the animatic audio track we’ve been using up to this point. The premiere file itself is kind of a convoluted mess:
Tumblr media
Nevertheless, it gets the job done, and taught me a whole lot about sound editing and design over the course of the semester (except organizational skills.)
--- Last Reflections
This semester has been such a momentous one for so many reasons. If 320 taught me “how to work on animation,” then 420 taught me how to work on animation for real. The jump is so tangible, not necessarily in a “workload” sense (although that may be part of it) but more so as an appreciation for the art of animation itself as a collaborative medium, and a visually exploratory one.  I am much more aware now of every element that goes into a piece of work, and I think I can see the great value in attempting to discerning the purpose behind everything we see in Animation, as with any art piece. While it was easy to get away with seemingly arbitrary choices of shape, color, motion and such in the past, it has become especially necessary now to be deliberate in making choice, since the workload falls on someone else’s shoulders.
- Adjustments to the Process in the Future:
Not all of this is necessarily in my control, nor should this be held against anyone or any part of the film making process here, since after all we’re learning and exploring how to work in teams with new techniques. That being said, one thing I would aim to sharpen in the future is the pre-production estimates of workload times/levels, as well as the overall film length. I think I speak for most of us when I say that the film’s scope grew a lot over the course of the semester. And I’m not saying having a large or ambitious idea is bad - that’s my favorite kind of project! But it can become a bit of an issue when it grows to such a scope that we are having to recruit outside helpers and dedicate most or all of the 24 hours we have in a day to be able to manage finishing on time. Basically, just have a more rigid plan from the start, and be very cautious towards anything that adds unnecessary levels of complexity. That’s something that can be addressed at the animatic stage. Beyond that, being more cautious with the estimates of time and energy requirements per shot would help. I noticed that some (or maybe most) of the shots required quite a bit more time than originally intended to be roughed, lined, colored, and shaded. That’s not taking into consideration all the revisions they may go through as they are reviewed, given feedback, and trade hands between group members. Production schedule-wise, it’s much better to undershoot I think, and have a lot of extra time to hammer out details, maybe refine shots, and properly apply feedback versus feeling the dread of being behind schedule and cutting years from your life due to the amount of sleep lost to try and catch up. A general rule of thumb is that specificity helps. Despite how meticulously we planned, we would still occasionally run into issues such as what color a prop might be, or how the shading might change between environments. Or another example might be how a character’s physical attributes such as stretchiness might change or remain consistent throughout the film. Although these were minor things that got addressed in the end, baring those details in mind in the future would be of great help I think.
- Words of Advice to Future 420 Students
You have three options: either become a cyborg, learn to hate sleep, or adapt to being powered by copious amounts of coffee every day. As for me, I took something from all three of those this semester. Joking aside, these are some general pointers I would give to incoming 420 students: -Choose your story and teammates carefully: This semester can be as fun (or unfun) as you make it to be. No matter what though, the people you have at your side are the people you’re stuck with. Hopefully by this point in the major you would be familiar with your teammates and their individual strengths and quirks, so if you’re having trouble picking a team in the beginning, go with the people you feel are the most self-determined, hard working, and whom you can adapt to their mold (not necessarily vice versa.) If you hate your team, you will hate your semester. But if you love your team, it doesn’t matter how tough the work gets, because you can still come to class with a smile (a very dead inside smile.)
-Come in with a strong concept: Even if your idea doesn’t get picked, being able to receive other people’s ideas and represent them faithfully is vital to the overall success of the production. The better you understand the idea you are working on, the better prepared you will be to make it a reality. Also, simple designs and ideas tend to get picked more often. Keep that in mind when developing your idea.
-Diversity is a strength: Having a broad skillset on your crew is incredibly important. Ideally, everyone can functionally perform any given task on the production. But having specialists assigned certain specific tasks is very helpful. It serves to balance the workload more or less equally among members based on their strengths, and the result is a product where you have good work reflected in all aspects of the film.
-Be prepared to change your schedule: Unless your group’s idea is ridiculously simple, chances are you will be losing sleep, possible questioning your choice of major, and being forced to change both when and how you are available to people and things you care about in the world outside the borders of your computer screen. It is not a joke to say that this course can affect your health, your diet, and maybe even the way you view other people - or even yourself! If done properly, this class should challenge you in the way you live and handle work. It should force you to adapt to an animator’s lifestyle. Not that you need to forsake life to be an animator necessarily, but to give you a taste of what the industry may demand of you through certain seasons of life.
-Be able to take a joke: By the end of the project, you’re going to be throwing shots at each other left and right. It is a crazy, whacky time - and you may find yourself forgetting this is all for a school project. Learn to enjoy acknowledging your own weaknesses, and have fun pointing out the flaws in others, when its appropriate. This makes the experience not only more enjoyable, but in a strange, ironic way it makes us become comfortable with our shortcomings, and enables/pushes each other to genuinely improve our skills, and ultimately create a better product.
-Communication is key: You need to keep up with your group. Period. If you are our of the loop for even a day, it can throw things off big time. Setup a chat group via text, setup a Discord server, or find some other means to talk to one another that is reliable. Even if you don’t always feel like chatting, just be ready when somebody needs you (which will happen quite a lot.) Also, having a system of file sharing such as Google Drive is indispensable. You may find yourself keeping certain tabs open and rarely closing them, just to check for updates and be able to send/receive files when you need them.
-Practice makes perfect: I don’t care how good or bad you think you are at animating up till this point; if you do your best in this class, you will grow. You may find yourself drawing in a different art style than you’re used to, and implementing work methods and software that you’ve never used before. And that’s wonderful! Be open to experimenting and exploring new styles of work. I’ve found that is a big part of what makes animation enjoyable and inexhaustible. Just when you feel like you’re set in your ways, the moment you step into something new, it’s a whole other world, and you just might find something you like about it.That opens the door to not only other ways of being creative, but on a practical level, makes you a much more viable component to a team when being considered for hiring. Don’t let the early hardships bog you down; with time and practice, there’s nothing you can’t do. -- Well that pretty much wraps up this last blog post and the semester for 420. The experience has been life altering, no joke. I have no regrets, and I’m so thankful to have had the chance to work so closely with everyone. In my experience, this class has been the difference between being an animation student and becoming a professional animator. Even though it was as a real challenge emotionally and physically, I would take the class again if I could, and I very much look forward to working with you all - my fellow animators - in our continuing classes, as well as our careers beyond. You all have been my family here while I’ve been without one since moving all the way out here for school.
Thanks to Brittany for teaching our wonderful class! And to everyone who has fought through this semester together and made it something special, right up until the very end. Until next time my friends, this is the Undercover Animator signing out.

11 Quick Tips for the Liberty Seated Dollar Collector
By Brishen Foley
Editor’s Note: The following article has been reprinted from the E-Gobrecht Newsletter, Vol. 16, Issue 7, with the express permission of the Liberty Seated Collectors Club.
Here are some tips I think would be helpful to people that are contemplating starting a Liberty Seated dollar (LSD) set. They are not in any particular order and can all be equally important. One thing that goes without saying (even though I’m about to say it), join the LSCC! It is an incredible value and has been beneficial to me along the way. Hope these “Eleven Quick Tips” can help some newer collectors avoid some hard lessons and painful tuition.
Buy Coins with Original Surfaces                                                                      Most people start off buying the cheapest example they can find for each hole in the set. After assembling a handful of these examples you should be able to notice that while they may be straight graded, they certainly are not problem-free. Instead, they were deemed market acceptable. If the cheapest market acceptable coins are what floats your boat then more power to you. But make sure you do not pay a premium for them because you will have a tough time recovering any premium paid.                                                                                                                          For me, it is much more rewarding to pay more to find a problem-free example that is original and PQ. It may sound easy enough for those who are new to collecting Seated dollars but I can assure you that after years of building this set, it is tougher then you could ever imagine trying to locate PQ examples. I have spent countless hours searching for these rare treasures and with the help of a few great friends and dealers, I have managed a humble 41 of the 43 (minus the 1870s) I originally laid out as my goal. There is no way to get a precise number of surviving examples with original surfaces, but I lean heavily on the CAC population to get a rough idea of the number of original coins for each date. Another way to get an idea of how tough it is to find a nice original Seated dollar is to do a quick, simple search on eBay. I would guess nearly 90 percent of the dollars on eBay have been dipped, cleaned, damaged, or abused at some point in the past. That includes both raw and certified examples. If you are lucky enough to finally find a date you need that is strictly original and PQ… buy it!
Learn to Grade the Series Before You Buy                                                             There is an endless amount of knowledge to learn about LSDs. It is fairly easy to find out the basics such as how many coins are in a full date and mintmark set, which year was a proof only issue, and which coins are considered to be a key date. So I won’t bore you with those basic details. Learning to grade is an important part of becoming an expert in the series. You can not rely solely on what the plastic says. There are many dates that suffer from poor strikes and learning how to grade them yourself is essential. I would also strongly suggest getting a grasp of the survival estimates and how rare each particular date is taking into account originality. There are many dates that are considered “common” (if there is such a thing in this series), but I’d bet some of these “common” dates will take years to find a fully original PQ specimen. Once you’ve mastered this, you’ll be able to make a quick decision if you come across a date on your want list.
Buy LSDs that are Slabbed                                                                                              The market is flooded with counterfeit dollars from China. The best way to avoid buying a counterfeit is to purchase dollars that have already been authenticated by the top two grading services. Another benefit when buying certified coins is they are protected from future potential damage. These coins have managed to survive 150 years worth of wars, silver melting, natural disasters, the Great Depression, etc. The least we can do as owners is protect this large heavy silver coin from a rim bump from an accidental fall. Lastly, you’ll have a much easier time finding a buyer for a slabbed Liberty Seated dollar when it comes time to sell. Yes, we have all heard “Buy the Coin, Not the Holder,” however, when it comes time to sell, there is definitely a hierarchy and PCGS CAC approved coins are king followed by NCG CAC approved examples. Then comes a PCGS non CAC coin followed by NGC non CAC. I have bought and sold all of the above, and this has been my experience.
Send Your Coins to CAC for Approval                                                                    Whether you love them or hate them, CAC has proven itself in this market. There is absolutely no reason not to send your Seated dollars to CAC. The demand for CAC-approved coins is undeniable and is proven through the higher prices realized at auctions time and time again. I can not think of any other series that this approach is more profound. Seated dollars can sell for multiples of price guides’ listed value and in my opinion, they are worth every single penny and in many cases more.                                                                                                        Failure to send your coins to CAC simply leaves money on the table when selling choice PQ dollars. Luckily, if you are a collector member of CAC, it means you only pay for coins they actually sticker. A fair deal if you ask me… whether you divest your Seated dollar set yourself or you leave it to your heirs. CAC will ensure the most money possible at the time of sale. Another benefit of handling CAC coins is you can learn a lot about grading and identifying coins with problems. JA is very tough on Liberty Seated dollars and his eye has taught me a lot.
Ensure You Are Not Buying a Mis-Identified Proof                                           Once you’ve narrowed down the field to just strictly original pieces, you’ll be faced with an additional challenge. While building a set of business strike dollars, you will inevitably come across a circulated proof that is identified as a business strike. Research on this topic was almost non-existent until Dick Osburn and Brian Cushing put in the time and effort required to study the dies and published their book “Liberty Seated Dollars, A Register of Die Varieties” in January 2018. This is a must-own for those building a set. This is the only way to identify your coins by OC variety. Some years seem to be plagued by this more than others (hint: 1862.)
Take Time to Choose a Grade Range that is Manageable to Your Budget                                                                                                                      When I started collecting Liberty Seated dollars, I chose EF-45 as my target grade. I felt it was manageable and offered the best bang for my buck details-wise. I still believe this to be true, but realized quickly that an all EF-45 set of choice original dollars is almost an impossible task. The closest I’ve seen is the Old Chelsea Collection (which can be viewed through the PCGS registry). This set was actually the catalyst for the start of my own Seated dollar set. I can tell you what he has managed to do is absolutely amazing and probably can never be duplicated again. And any attempt to duplicate this feat would have to involve many years of waiting, searching, and a bottomless wallet. My set is falling short of my initial goal and now spans a wider grade range. I’ve found that the grade of the coin is less important than the originality of the coin. So do not get hung up on a single grade. I suggest you open your range up a bit to allow yourself a chance to actually complete this challenging series. I also suggest keeping the grade range as close as possible to avoid a coin looking too out of place.
Meeting Fellow Collectors is a Must!                                                                         I’ll let you in on a well-known secret… Most choice LSDs never appear on the open market. They sell amongst fellow collectors. I have met a lot of people since I started my set and a few of them have become some of my best friends, not just coin buddies but friendships beyond coins. We buy, sell and trade amongst each other and constantly look out for each other’s want lists. Simply put, I would not have the set I have today without them. This hobby is so much more rewarding when you have friends who are like-minded and who are looking out for each other. If possible, try to have multiple people to bounce things off of. This can help a newer collector identify coins that have problems that may be beyond his knowledge when starting a new collection.
Choose a Mentor Wisely                                                                                              When attempting to put together an original set of business strikes, I highly advise you to gain a mentor who has knowledge of the series and who genuinely has your best interest at heart. Just because a person has knowledge of LSDs doesn’t make them a mentor. One must take the time to properly vet this individual… Ask around, you’d be surprised how small this Seated dollar world is. Any Seated dollar specialist will inevitably have a reputation. In this business, reputation is everything.                                                                                                Some guys have a reputation of being solid as an oak while others will do or say anything to make a buck. Ask the dealers off the record about a potential candidate and their answer should give you a decent feel for the situation. In this hobby, your word is everything. There are guys I’ve never met in person, but have done 5-figure coin deals with nothing more than a phone conversation. Literally, sending coins before payment and vise versa. That is the level of trust I have built with certain LSCC members. Sadly, this is not the case for everyone and this must be learned through experience and word of mouth. Everyone has their own level of trust they are willing to extend, but no matter the level you feel comfortable with, a good mentor is necessary.
The “Time to Buy” is When You See Her                                                                Once you have found a choice PQ original example of a date you need and you feel comfortable with the price… it is time to buy! Even the slightest hesitation can turn into you waiting a decade or more before another premium example presents herself in your desired grade range. I have a want list open with several well respected, high integrity dealers and have gotten some incredible coins that way. When they call, you should be able to make a pass or play decision fairly quickly. That is the least you can do to show the dealer you appreciate having a shot at his material. That being said, I’d suggest only purchasing coins that are good enough to have in your set forever. This takes a tremendous amount of patience and willpower which I myself have fallen short of many times. Upgrading constantly can be, or shall I say is, an unnecessary cost in an already expensive series to collect. So try to avoid constant upgrading when possible.
Stay Focused                                                                                                        Attempting a Liberty Seated dollar set with this approach will test you in many ways. For one, you’ll have to find these rare gems. Once you’ve found them, you’ll have to have the financial means to complete the purchase. Once you’ve gotten through half the set you’ll find the coins you need are all extremely scarce, and months or even years can go by without finding a coin that is needed towards your set. This downtime can cause a collector to lose focus and spend his or her money elsewhere sometimes moving on to other series or worse another hobby. I would suggest trying to resist the urge although I am actually guilty of this myself and have admittedly started a Trade dollar collection to fill in the time in between Seated dollar purchases. I justify this to myself by the fact that in a second’s notice, I am willing to sell off my Trade dollar set in order to purchase the right Seated dollar.
Take a Few Coins Around to Shows                                                                           Once you have a small group of Seated dollars in your possession, take a few representatives to a coin show and show them around. You may be surprised at some of the feedback. Ask them what they believe your coins are worth. This will give you a rough idea of how well you did with your purchases.                    Speaking to dealers that are knowledgeable in the series can be a great educational experience. Once you develop a relationship with these dealers, they will keep in touch as they locate nice examples. They can also look at coins in auctions for you and provide some great feedback from their first hand, in-person inspection of the auction lot. A relationship with a good group of dealers is important and needs to be maintained to get a crack at fresh material coming on to the market.

Inside the Amazing, Private Life of Aretha Franklin
Aretha Franklin was more than just the Queen of Soul, she was the Queen of Strength. Right up until the very end, Franklin, who’d secretly lived with pancreatic cancer for nearly a decade, refused to let her ongoing health battle overshadow her lifetime of accomplishments. Holding tight to her Queen of Soul title for five decades, she blazed a trail that included selling 75 million albums, winning 18 Grammy awards, and becoming the first woman to be inducted to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and youngest artist to receive a Kennedy Honor in 1994. But while the “Natural Woman” singer broke records and broke down barriers, she worked hard to keep her tumultuous personal life as private as possible. From losing her mother at a young age to becoming a teen mom and surviving domestic abuse, the star managed to keep shining in the midst of countless struggles. RELATED: Madonna Honors Aretha Franklin at the MTV VMAs — but Twitter Takes Her to Task for Tribute In this week’s issue family, friends and famous peers open up about the amazing career and private world of the American icon. “My aunt had a heck of a life,” her nephew Tim Franklin told PEOPLE after her death, crediting her faith in God as the source of her strength. “In the end — just like in the beginning,” he said, “she reached out to the one who sustained her and refused to let go.” News first broke on the morning of Aug. 13 that the legendary Queen of Soul was ailing, with sources later confirming to PEOPLE that Franklin was “gravely ill,” and another sharing that her death would be “imminent.” Shortly after, on Aug. 16, the family and publicist of Franklin announced that the 76-year-old music icon had died from advanced pancreatic cancer of the neuroendocrine type at her Detroit-area home. RELATED: Aretha Franklin Reportedly Had an Estimated Net Worth of $80 Million and No Will — What’s at Stake? Family members and friends — including Stevie Wonder and the Reverend Jesse Jackson — flocked to Franklin’s bedside to share her last moments with her, but little else was known about the star’s specific illness or prognosis prior to her death. And though Franklin’s remarkable career drew in eyes and ears from around the world, she demanded privacy and R-E-S-P-E-C-T when it came to fiercely guarding her personal life. Fans speculated about Franklin’s health since she underwent a mystery surgery on Dec. 2, 2010. At the time she didn’t reveal what the procedure was for, saying only that it was “highly successful.” But later that week, a relative told Fox 2 in her hometown of Detroit that she had cancer, and the National Enquirer reported that it was pancreatic. In January 2011, Franklin said that she’s “not going to even deal with” the reports of her cancer. Through to the end, she refused to speak of it publicly.   For PEOPLE’s tribute to the Queen of Soul, who died 41 years to the day after Elvis Presley, pick up this week’s issue, on newsstands Friday. Health aside, when it came to marriage and motherhood, Franklin was at her most secretive. Throughout her career, Franklin “put out a picture of her having a happy home and happy children and everything was rosy,” said biographer David Ritz – who spent two years working with Franklin on her 1999 memoir From These Roots before later penning his own biography of her life, 2015’s Respect . He added “any stories to the contrary really got her mad.” “She had a tough childhood,” Ritz told PEOPLE, referring to the fact that Franklin’s mother left the family when the singer was only 6 years old because of her husband’s infidelity. In her early teens and as her career as a gospel singer was just revving up, Franklin mothered two sons, never to reveal the identities of their fathers. RELATED: Teen Motherhood, Losing Her Dad and Her Quiet Health Battle: Aretha Franklin’s Personal Struggles Then at 19, Franklin married Ted White, and had a son with him, named Ted “Teddy” White, Jr., 54. Ted and the singer divorced in 1969 after reports of domestic abuse surfaced, and a 1968 Time article described how White “roughed her up” more than once. Later, she married actor Glynn Turman, whom she divorced in 1984. “Early on in her career she was hit by the tabloids,” explained Ritz. There were stories of her being a victim of domestic violence and she didn’t like that. She didn’t like the image of her being a beaten woman. She loved the blues but she didn’t want to be seen as a tragic blues figure.” Her youngest son, Kecalf, 48, was born in 1970. His name is an acronym of both his father and mother’s full names — Ken E. Cunningham (the star’s road manager) and Aretha Louise Franklin. “She’s not atypical in her privacy, she’s just extreme,” Ritz said. “I think her strategy for emotional survival was idealization of her life in general. When you tend to idealize things, you don’t have to deal with a lot of the tough realities.” Though the singer never publicly confirmed who fathered her older children, Ritz revealed in his book that the father of her oldest son, Clarence, 63, was Donald Burke, whom Franklin knew from school. “Aretha went back to school after having Clarence,” the musical icon’s sister Erma said in Respect. “She was an excellent student who did well in all her classes.” RELATED: Fans Remember Late ‘Queen Of Soul’ Aretha Franklin Outside Harlem’s Apollo Theater In 1957, Franklin welcomed her second child, Edward, who turns 61 this month. Franklin would then drop out of school to focus on her musical career, leading her to live a life of “silent suffering,” as her sister Erma describes in Respect. Already with four children of her own, Franklin “filled the gap” for her siblings’ children when they died. “We had all lost our parents – she stepped in and filled the gap,” her nephew Tim added. “She was the last one of the siblings, and when my aunt Erma and my dad died within a couple months of each other, she stepped right in and put her feelings aside even though she was grieving a loss that was two months apart. She might have grieved in private, but we never saw it.” “The Queen of Soul — we didn’t know her,” Tim continued about how the family matriarch’s global fame paled in comparison to her enormous heart. “She was able to keep that separate from her personal life, so we never knew the Queen of Soul. Rather, we knew that was an accomplishment that she had made.” While her accomplishments never went unnoticed, neither did her personality, as a “very real” individual with a “very optimistic” attitude. RELATED: Ariana Grande Cries While Singing ‘Natural Woman’ in Powerful Tribute to Aretha Franklin “I think you can read her emotions really quickly, if she’s feeling happy or in a good mood, she will sit down at the piano and start singing or serenading you,” music and biopic producer Harvey Mason Jr. explained to PEOPLE. “If she’s going through something, I think she has the emotions right there for everyone to see.” “I think one of the things I found interesting about her is her knowledge of music and so many different genres of music, she would sit at the piano and start playing songs I would never expect her to know, singing opera, substituting for Pavarotti at the Grammys the one year is a perfect example of that,” he added. “She can go back and forth between different genres seamlessly and effortlessly and that is something that is really unique about her.” One thing the star never hid was her show-stopping sense of style. During Franklin’s performance at President Barack Obama’s 2009 inauguration, her Swarovski-crystal-studded hat immediately stole the show and became the day’s most popular meme. And the designer behind the topper, Luke Song of Mr. Song Millinery, spoke to PEOPLE about his close relationship with the Queen, remembering her as “so soft spoken” and “classy all the way.” “I’ve known her at least 20 years … she’s been frequenting our showroom for as long as I can remember. I’ve made hundreds of hats for her,” says the Detroit-based designer who often made hats for Franklin to wear to church. RELATED: People Now: How Aretha Franklin Once Clapped Back at Body Shaming — Watch the Full Episode “She would come into the showroom and she definitely knew what she wanted. A lot of times she brought in her own designs and brought in pictures and references,” Song adds. Always dressed to the nines and arriving in style in a big white limo with her entourage in tow, Song says Franklin was “very down to earth and very personable. I’m very fortunate to have her as a customer. It was a privilege.” Longtime makeup artist Robin Manoogian also opened up to PEOPLE about working with the star from 1994-2004, remembering her as a “woman of few words,” who “would dance to her own tune.” “There were many people that were up there at her level and you could sense the level of respect and I remember that Bill Clinton was a big fan and they would all just fawn over her and praise her,” says Manoogian. “As the English bow down to the queen, everyone in the music business virtually stopped and took a bow to her.” RELATED: Aretha Franklin’s Longtime Makeup Artist Shares Personal Photos and Memories of the Late Singer “She commanded such respect and you could feel it in the air when other people came into her presence and she usually just sat very quiet and to herself,” she continues. “And the joy of just watching her sit at the piano, she was in her glory.” Like most in Franklin’s orbit, Manoogian is thankful for everything Franklin gave her. “It exceeded my own career dreams,” she says. “I don’t know how I was lucky enough.” For more on the life, legacy and loss of Aretha Franklin, pick up the new issue of PEOPLE, on newsstands Friday. http://bit.ly/2MqlCqy

The Complete Guide To Dog Potty Training
Tumblr media
When it comes to potty training your puppy, we do understand that is can be pretty tricky or tough to train them, especially so if the puppy is simply disobedient. Having said that, you also cannot expect your puppy to be fully housetrained and dependable before it turns six months old. The best age to train your puppy is between one to six weeks. This is also actually dependable on your puppy’s size and breed as well as the consistency of your efforts in dog potty training it.
We know that it can be tough trying to potty train your dog, and hence we have written the complete guide in potty training your dog for you.
The Complete Guide To Dog Potty Training
When it comes to dog potty training, you will have to understand that your puppy won’t have full control over its bladder and bowel before he’s 16 weeks of age. To put it simply, he’s unable to “hold it” for extended periods so you have to be extra vigilant during that period. But that doesn’t mean that you can’t start housetraining her as soon as he enters your house for the first time. It simply means that you need to expect your puppy to have a handful of accidents.
While it can be frustrating, don’t feel that all is lost. I mean, if there are owners out there with dogs who are completely potty trained, your dog can be potty trained too!
Some people think housebreaking is as simple as just keeping the dog on a regular eating, drinking and potty routine where he is taken out every few hours. Or they believe the dog will be fully housetrained within a week or two. For a lot of puppies, this might be so. But the majority of the puppies who, after the potty training process, still have mishaps a few months after the so called-training. There might be underlying reasons why, but our job is not to speculate on that. My sole job now is to ensure that you know exactly what to do so that your puppy will be properly potty trained.
1. What To Expect
One of the first few steps to proper house training is the ability to tell when your dog needs to relieve themselves. Here are some of the common observations that you will want to take note.
First thing in the morning (immediately after he wakes up)
After each meal
After drinking water
Soon after waking up from a nap
During and/or after playing and exercising
After gnawing on his chew toys
After a ride in a vehicle
After smelling another dog’s urine or seeing him pee
When he leaves his crate
Last thing at night (before he sleeps)
As you see, your dog needs to go out frequently. But don’t fret; as he gets older he’ll need to be taken outdoor less often.
How often will my Puppy Need to Relieve Himself?
The time frame actually varies a little. Here is a rough guide that will indicate the age vs the number of times they will need to relieve themselves.
6-8 weeks – every 30 (for toy and small breeds), 45 (for medium breeds), 60 (for large breeds) to 90 minutes (for giant breeds); one or two trips during the night
8 to 12 weeks – every two hours, one trip during the night
12 to 16 weeks – every two hours; one trip for toy and small breeds during the night.
16 to 20 weeks – every three hours; none during the night
20 to 30 weeks – four to size times a day; none during the night
30+ weeks – three to four times a day; none during the night
12 months old – three times a day; none during the night
Last but not least, your puppy will most likely want to defecate between one and 30 minutes after eating and to pee within 20 minutes of drinking a lot of water.
Obviously, these are just general estimates. You should always observe your dog’s behavior and adjust the schedule accordingly.
During the first week, the more trips to the toilet, the better. That’s why it’s smart to take some time off when you bring your puppy home. By setting up good habits from day one, you will have an easier time trying to potty train your puppy.
If you opt to take a week off, don’t make the mistake of having the pup with you all the time because you won’t be there at all times when you go return to work and you’ll make it trickier for your dog to adjust. Rather, adhere to a normal schedule. That way, you’ll achieve the following:
You’ll speed up your puppy’s housetraining process by bringing him outdoor or to his designated place indoor more frequently that you could if you’ve been working.
You’ll help your puppy understand that being alone is not the end of the world. Some dogs might suffer from separation anxiety, so it is something that you will need to note too.
Where Should My Puppy Relieve himself?
There are just two places your dog can relieve himself: outdoor at his “potty area” or indoor at his “toilet stop.” Probably the most common mistake new owners make is to believe that paper training is the first step to housetraining. It’s actually not.
Housetraining, or outdoor training, is the method of teaching your puppy to pee or poop outside all the time while indoor training involves teaching your dog to defecate at a designed place, his toilet stop, inside your house.

Most puppies follow a routine just before peeing or pooping. Your task is to figure out how to “read” your pet. To aid you in this task, listed below are the signs you should be aware of:
Your pup whimpers
His tail is rising
He runs around in a circle
He sniffs intently the floor, carpet, ground in pursuit of the right spot
He paces restlessly
He chafes the door that leads to his poop zone
He moves out of the playing area
He squats
As soon as you see any of aforementioned behavior, stop whatever you’re doing, put his leash on and take him outside to his poop zone or inside to his toilet stop. If he starts peeing, interrupt him by saying a firm “outside” or “toilet” and then take him to his potty place.
Puppy or Adult Toilet Training, Is There a Difference?
The housetraining technique is the same for a puppy or an adult dog. The only variation is that an adult dog can hold it a lot longer than a pup. So, it may seem easier to teach an adult dog, but it can also be tricky since your adult dog comes with a history and you don’t always know how his previous owner trained him. The crate training part of the method may take a bit longer with an adult dog though.
Potty Training Strategies
The true secret to potty training is taking your puppy out frequently (typically every two hours for an eight-week-old pup) and never giving him the chance to have a potty accident. This means a minimum of eight trips each day.
To prevent giving your dog the chance to potty anywhere else in the house he should always either be:
in his crate
in a puppy-safe and potty-safe playpen with a potty area which has an ideal potty surface (like fake grass or pee pads)
attached to you by a leash so he can’t wander off to potty
or under your direct supervision in an enclosed area. Direct guidance implies you’re looking at him at all times.
Follow this plan for a month straight and he’ll get the habit of going outside to defecate and holding it when inside the house. Then continue keeping a close eye on him for another month or two, particularly when you take him on outings to other people’s homes, before confirming that your puppy is completely toilet trained.
Expectations For Puppy
Another key to a successful doggy potty training is understanding your puppy. Below is a guideline of what you have to expect with regards to puppyhood.
For a puppy, life is all about “Me!” Assume nothing more than that from your puppy. Basically, in their minds, their owners are pretty much their servants in this stage. Their needs imitate the immediate needs of a baby or young toddler. Remember that it has absolutely nothing to do with your puppy being bratty- it’s just his immediate needs that need tending. So, do tend to them immediately.
You will also need to know that this is the phase of affection, hence you’ll easily fall in love with your pup. Take tons of photos, but be mindful not to overindulge and spoil your pup. This will be the hardest part of raising your dog but is vital in setting up a cooperative, good dog. Your puppy is just too young for proper obedience training in this life stage. Your task now is to stop errors, teach concepts, and keep your dog safe until he can learn his obedience skills.
In addition to that, puppies act on intuition. Puppies come equipped with only their dog instincts and are acting strictly on what they know genetically. They’re not in charge of their emotions, nor do they pre-plan actions. They just act on their instincts until their owners teach them to withstand urges. Do not punish, but reroute them and remain patient!
Do note that puppies literally have no self-control during this period. They generally tend to do whatever springs into their little minds. This is part instinct and part absence of self-control. Don’t expect your puppy to make good choices or to continually be well behaved.
Trying to “break” your pup of instinctual behaviors won’t work. You can educate your dog to stop using his mouth to communicate when you teach him a different approach to communicating. Until then, trying to use “quick fixes” to restrain these behaviors will only serve to diminish your puppy’s confidence in you as a leader.
Puppies have a limited attention span and can only “behave,” or in other words, be kept out of trouble, for a restricted period of time. As they grow and as owners train them, they do develop an attention span. It’s vital that you know now that they can only focus for short time periods.
Your puppy can learn the housebreaking routine, but his body cannot “hold” all of his bodily functions regardless of how much he may want to do this. At roughly four and a half to five months of age, your puppy’s body will get caught up in development and then control his flow of pee from the body.
2. Outdoor or Indoor Training?
Depending on your situation, you need to determine if you intend to train your pup to defecate outside or inside your home. It’s strongly suggested to train the dog to go out if you have a yard or have an immediate access to a park or street.
If you’re currently living in a high-rise apartment or if you have a disability, it can be difficult to train your dog to go out to pee or eliminate, so indoor training in a specific part of the house is suggested. In addition, owners of toy breed who live in a region/place where it’s cold in the winter might also decide to train their dogs inside.
Preparation Is Crucial!
It’s always better to get everything prepared even before you bring the puppy home for the first time. But don’t worry, if you already have your dog, this part of the guide to dog potty training will help you get started straight away. Throughout the training process, there are two kinds of confinement:
Short-term
Long-term
To confine your dog for a short period of time, make use of his crate. When you leave your pup for more than a couple of hours, you have to use long-term confinement. As a result, you need to block part of a room in your house you don’t wish your puppy to have access to. You may use a kiddy gate to execute this successfully.
On your dog’s own special area (like his crate or his own small den), always make sure to pepper it with chew toys. It’s a good idea to put a plastic sheet under the paper to protect the floor even more. This place is your puppy’s domain, so everyone in the household must recognize and respect it.
According to professionals, the best part of the house to put his den/crate is near the kitchen. This place is usually the best choice because it’s often the busiest place in the house. Dogs really need to feel that they’re part of the family and being in the midst of all the action is very motivating for them. In general, a kitchen floor is easy to clean which is actually a good thing during housetraining.
To block part of the other parts of the room, as mentioned above, you may use baby gates. They are easy to install and to open when it’s time to get your pup outside. You can also use a playpen to confine your dog. Most pet stores have them. These tools are pricier though.
Your puppy’s own special place aka his domain should be limited with gates or board, his crate should be in a corner and the rest of the floor covered with old bed sheets or brown paper (a lot better than newspaper).
Choosing Your Puppy’s Toilet Spot
You have to decide where you want your pup to defecate. For those of you who will outdoor train your puppy, choose a place that is easily accessible and relatively quiet and that won’t get too muddy. For instance, choose a corner from the backyard that isn’t too close to the streets so your dog won’t get distracted when it’s time for him to do his business. His choice of poop place is called his poop zone or toilet spot.
Obviously, for city dogs, the poop zone will most likely be the gutter. But no matter which spot you decide on, it’s important that you train your dog to be comfortable in it. This is actually not a hard thing to accomplish since dogs have an extremely powerful sense of smell. It only takes one urination and poop for your pup to recognize the spot after that. The smell of his pee and poop will trigger your dog’s desire to eliminate and speed-up the whole process.
Furthermore, dogs have this intuition to want to refresh their spot, just to mark it and for other dogs to not claim the spot for their own. In this aspect, dogs are very territorial.
The toilet stop is the equivalent of the poop zone but it’s inside your house. You have to choose a place that won’t be in the way, but not too isolated so that your puppy will have a hard time finding it. Vets usually recommend the bathroom. The floor surface is usually easy to clean-up.
Potty training begins with understanding how to love and sleep in a crate (or other small, enclosed area):
The purpose of crate training is that your pup learns to love resting in his crate.
Crate
Your dog should sleep in his crate at night and take naps in it throughout the day. To train him to love his crate, you can make it cozy with a blanket and place treats inside at random times. Then give his toys and pet him when he’s in it prior to closing the door. The main goal of crate training is that he goes into the crate on his own or when you give him a verbal cue, as opposed to needing to be shoved or coaxed in. And once he’s in, he remains relaxed, comfortable and quiet.
Crate Size
The crate must be large enough for the pup to lie down and turn around, however, not big enough for a separate potty area. You may make the crate smaller by putting a box in it and, as the dog grows, expand the crate simply by using a smaller box.
Most pups whine the first time they are crated. They aren’t accustomed to having restricted access to their family. It’s essential that puppies learn that being separated or confined is fine. If you’re conscientious with regards to the crate training in early stages, the whining ought to stop within a week.
If you reward your dog by letting him out when he whines, the whining could become serious anxiety or barrier frustration that limits you from being able to leave your pet alone in another room or alone at home.
Regular Schedule And Getting The Pup To His Potty Spot Quickly
When you let your pup out of his crate, rush him to his potty spot before he has a chance to squat and pee. If you’re unsure that he can hold it long enough to make it outside, carry him out. If you take him out without a leash, walk briskly or run down the hall so he doesn’t have a chance to stop. He may have to be on a leash so he doesn’t have the opportunity to stop. Even a one- second stop will give him a chance to squat and potty inside. That means if you have stairs, it’s wise to carry him, since his reluctance right before the first stair is sufficient to permit him to squat and pee.
Once outside, keep him on a leash so he can’t wander and get distracted, otherwise place him in a small confined area outside. Stand silently until he potties. When he does, compliment, pet him or give him a treat as he’s finishing. Just be cautious you don’t distract him from finishing. If after five minutes he doesn’t potty, put him in his crate for 15 minutes and then repeat the process. Do this 20-minute procedure until he potties outside. After he has pottied, you can play with him.
This can be tiresome at first. Give some thought to listening to music or a book on tape while you wait for him to do his business, and also having a timer so you don’t get impatient for the five minutes outside. If your puppy doesn’t potty initially, remember to take him back out for a second try after 15 minutes in his crate.
How Often Should You Take Him Out?
Commence with every two hours for an eight-week-old puppy. Eight-week-old puppies can be crated for up to two hours in the daytime and through the entire night when they’re sleeping. Generally speaking, during the day, puppies can be crated the same number of hours as their age in months. For instance, a three-month-old puppy can be crated three hours at a time, if he hasn’t had a large drink of water prior to going in.
Take him out after a nap.
Besides the two-hour rule, take the dog out whenever he wakes up from sleeping or first comes out of his crate or playpen.
Take him out to potty after a play session.
If he doesn’t go potty, you can put him in his crate for 15 to 30 minutes and then take him out again.
Take him out when his body language says he’s hunting for a spot to pee.
Indications that the pup is about to potty can be subtle. Usually, they start sniffing the ground, circle or wander away.
After a drink.
Take him out to potty 10 to 20 minutes after he’d had a drink of water. Remove his water around an hour prior to taking him out for his last potty trip of the day, so he can go through the night without pottying. He must be able to pull through the night for seven to eight hours.
Learn from your blunders.
Puppies have to potty seemingly a hundred times a day. Figure out how to anticipate when your pup will need to wait, and expect to have accidents. Every time he has an accident, you need to learn from the experience and prevent making the same blunders again. Potty training is about creating a habit of going to a potty spot whenever the puppy has to go potty and never giving him the chance to have an accident inside.
Adding the cue to go potty.
When you are able to reliably predict when he’s about to potty, you can also add a cue word. Say “go potty” in a clear, motivating voice only once, right before you think he’ll squat. If you’re able to dependably say it within a matter of moments before he has to squat, he’ll come to learn that “go potty” means he should do his business on his elimination zone/toilet spot. Refrain from saying the cue again and again, or it’ll just turn into noise to him.
3. Constant Supervision
Until he’s reliable, the puppy must be directly monitored or attached to you with a hands-free leash or near you on a leash or resting in a playpen. On the other hand, he can be outdoors in a potty-safe and puppy-safe area. This could help him be able to potty when you’re not outside to look over him. But avoid leaving him outside without supervision for hours at a time. Also, understand that young puppies are less in a position to withstand warm and cold conditions.
Housetraining your dog or dog demands more than a few piles of old newspapers -it requires caution, patience, a good amount of commitment and most importantly, consistency.
By using the procedures outlined below, you are able to minimize house-soiling mishaps. Practically every dog, especially pups, will have an accident in the house, and more likely, quiet a lot. Expect this – it’s part of living with a puppy.
The more constant you’re in pursuing the basic housetraining methods, the faster your dog will learn appropriate behavior. It may take a few weeks to housetrain your puppy, and with some of the smaller breeds, it could take longer.
Set-Up a Routine
Like infants, puppies do best on a regular schedule. The routine teaches him that there are periods to eat, times to play, and times to potty.
Most of the time, a puppy can control his bladder one hour for every month of age. So if your pup is two months old, he can hold it for approximately two hours. Don’t go longer than this between toilet breaks or he’s certain to have an accident. If you work away from home, this means you need to ask your housemate (or family member) or in some cases to employ a dog walker to give your pup his breaks.
Take your puppy outside often -at least every two hours-and soon after he wakes up, during and after playing, and after eating or drinking.
Choose a bathroom spot outside, and always take your pup to that spot using a leash. While your dog is eliminating, use a word or phrase, like “go potty,” that you can eventually use before he eliminates to remind him to do his business. Take him out for an extended walk or some playtime only after he has pooped.
Reward your pup each time he pees or poops outdoors. Compliment him or give him a treat – but make sure to do so soon after he’s completed his business, not after he comes back inside the house. This step is critical because rewarding your dog for peeing or pooping outdoors is the sole method he’ll know what’s expected of him. Before rewarding him, make sure he’s finished eliminating. Puppies are very easily distracted. If you praise him too quickly, he may overlook to finish until he’s back in the house.
Put your puppy on a regular feeding timetable. Based on their age, puppies usually have to be fed three or four times a day. Feeding your pup at the same time every day will make it more likely that he’ll do his business at constant times too, and that makes housetraining simpler for both of you.
Pick up your puppy’s water dish about two and a half hours before going to bed to reduce the chance that he’ll need to potty through the night. Most puppies can sleep for about seven hours without needing to poop.
If your puppy does wake you up in the night, don’t make a big issue of it; or else, he’ll think it is time to play and won’t desire to return to sleep. Turn on as few lights as possible, don’t talk to or fool around with your pup, take him out to do his business, and return him to his bed.
Supervise
Don’t provide your puppy a chance to soil in the house; keep close track of him whenever he’s indoors. Tether your pup to you or a close by a piece of furniture with a six-foot leash if you’re not actively training or having fun with him. Look for signs your pup needs to eliminate. Some indicators are obvious, such as barking or scraping at the door, squatting, and uneasiness, sniffing around, or circling. When you see these signs, quickly grab the leash and take him outside to his toilet spot. If he does his business, compliment him generously and reward him with a treat.
Keep your pup on leash in the yard. Throughout the housetraining process, your yard must be treated like any other room in your house. Give your dog some freedom in the house and yard once he is reliably housetrained.
Confinement
When you find yourself unable to watch your pup continuously, he must be limited to an area small enough that he won’t wish to do his regular business there. The area must be just large enough for him to comfortably stand, lie down, and turn around in. Use a portion of your bathroom or laundry room obstructed off with baby gates.
Or you might want to crate train your pup and use the crate to confine him. Just make sure to discover ways to use a crate humanely as a technique of confinement. If your dog has spent a long time in confinement, you will have to take him straight to his toilet spot once you let him out, and praise him when he poops.
Housebreaking
The initial step to housebreaking your pup is to set up a schedule. It is important to stay as close to the same times daily until your dog has fully understood the idea you’re teaching him. The tighter you stick to a schedule, the faster the pup will establish a rhythm and internal time clock for his own timetable.
Develop a working schedule across the rhythms of the household. Puppies have to be fed two or three times a day except if work schedules prohibit. Commence your schedule when the household wakes, and start with an immediate toilet break. Once a pup is awake he won’t wait long to eliminate.
Write this schedule down and post it in a visible place in the house (like the kitchen door). If several people are taking care of the puppy, make certain schedule duties are understood and followed by all. A unified household can guarantee the success of your housebreaking venture.
Cue Words
When coming to the door, go with a word like “outside” to direct the first part of his task. “Outside” will let him know where you’re going, and by using the subsequent cue word (the elimination cue word); he’ll connect the two words with the process.
“Outside” will end up a question you’ll later ask him if you feel he needs to go outside. If you’ve successfully linked “outside” with, say, “go potty” (as the elimination cue word), he’ll quickly run to the door in response to your question if he needs an elimination break.
Elimination Cue
Use one more specific cue like “hurry” to suggest that you wish him to eliminate. This word can be connected easily with the first potty break of the morning since most pups have to eliminate very first thing in the morning.
Cue words may become gentle coaxes when you’re aware your pup has to eliminate but is possibly becoming distracted in the yard. Repeating the cue “hurry” in a coaxing voice can refocus him on the job at hand.
Some folks decide to pick one cue word for peeing and one for pooping. You need to time the cue word with the action a number of times successfully so your pup can make the link between the action and the words. At times it’s simpler to use one word or term for both actions.
The Housebreaking Cycle
Commence the housebreaking cycle by bringing your pup out of the crate. Carry or walk your dog promptly outside. Using a leash, walk your puppy over to the specified elimination area. Gently, but motivationally, repeat your cue word.
Once your pup has pooped, praise in a gentle tone and go back inside the house.
Wait only for five minutes for your pup to eliminate. If it takes more than this, he probably doesn’t need to poop or is distracted.
Return inside and wait around 5 to 15 minutes and do this again. Once inside, provide breakfast and some water. When your pup finishes, take him outdoors for another toilet break. In this morning routine, your dog must both pee and poop.
How to Potty Train a Dog to Go in One Spot
Dogs can create a mess of your yard when they relieve themselves any place they want. To stop this matter, it’s beneficial to train them to relieve themselves only in one specific spot. Here’s how you can do it:
Pick a Spot
Pick a spot away from the high traffic parts of your yard. The spot you select must be suitable for the size of your dog. A small area could be fine for a toy or small breed dog, but larger breeds will need more room.
At times dogs pick their own spot. Does your pet often come back to one spot regularly to relieve himself? If that’s the case, if at all possible, make this his toilet area.
Keep the Spot Clean
You need to keep your dog’s toilet area clean. It is possible to leave one pile in the area during training to let your pet know that’s the right spot, but ensure not to leave any more than that. If the area becomes too soiled, your pet may check out other place to relieve himself.
Train the Dog to Go on Command
Among the simplest ways to train a dog to go only in a single spot is to train him to relieve himself on command. Take the pup to the spot you want him to make use of, and give the command. Keep him in that spot until he relieves himself, after which praise him. Only reward him when he goes in that specific spot.
Confine Your Dog to One Spot
Just as you do not allow your pet who isn’t housebroken to have free run of the house, a dog not taught to go in one spot should not have free run of your yard. The ideal way to keep your dog from relieving himself outside of the spot you pick is to keep him on a leash. Stand in the spot you have opted, and wait until he relieves himself. Never let him explore other parts of the yard until he finishes doing his business.
Reward Good Behavior
If your dog relieves himself in the right spot, supply him with a reward. As soon as he goes, compliment him and let him off leash to have some playtime in the yard. If he doesn’t relieve himself, take him back inside, and try again later on. Don’t allow him to run in the yard if he hasn’t relieved himself yet.
Monitor the Dog’s Body Language
During the occasion when you permit your dog playtime, make certain to watch over him. Keep close track of his body language. Most canines give a sign that they’re about to relieve themselves. They pace or spin or sniff. If you see your dog doing any of these behaviors outside of his designated potty area, disrupt him and bring him to the right spot.
Further Vital Information
It’s very important that you clean after your dog. This is particularly essential if your dog eliminates on the street pavements or in the park (this is especially true to people living in high-rise buildings or condominiums). Every time your dog poops, make sure that you dispose of his waste properly. Make it a habit to bring a poop scope and plastic or brown bag whenever you play with him around the neighborhood.
4. Eliminating Accidents
Puppies need to be housetrained to realize that it’s not fine to pee and poop just anywhere. Potty training is a straightforward process, but one that must be executed positively (with no punishment that frightens the puppy) and consistently, following two main rules:
Avoid indoor accidents through confinement and close monitoring, and
Take the puppy outside on a regular schedule and reward him for eliminating where you want him to do his business.
House soiling may happen in any part in your home but sometimes pet parents will observe that their puppy soils more in selected places, like rarely used rooms or on a specific type of surface. Very young pups (under 12 weeks old) don’t have full bladder control and might be unable to hold it very long. Older puppies that’ve had accidents mightn’t have been house trained entirely.
Why Pups You Thought Were Housetrained Might Have Mishaps
There are several reasons why ‘housetrained dogs” might have accidents.
Too Young to Be Fully House Trained
Some pups, particularly those under 12 weeks of age, haven’t developed bladder or bowel control yet.
Incomplete Housetraining
A lot of puppies simply haven’t learned where to eliminate or they haven’t learned a means to tell their people when they have to go out. Some pups house soil only under certain conditions. For instance, a puppy may soil when he’s home alone for very long time periods, very first thing in the morning, at some point during the night, only when you’re not watching or only in occasionally used rooms. Other pups may pee or poop whenever they feel the necessity to go.
Breakdown in Housetraining
At times pups who seem to be house trained at some point regress and start off soiling in the house again.
Some Other Reasons Your Puppy Might Defecate at your house
Of course, there might be other reasons why your dog decides to defecate in the house.
Urine Marking
If your pup is over three months of age and pees small amounts on vertical surfaces, he could be urine marking. Young dogs doing this behavior often elevate their hind legs when peeing.
Separation Anxiety
If your pup only soils when he’s left alone at home, even for short time frames, he may have separation anxiety. If this is the case, you may observe that he appears anxious or upset right before you leave him by himself.
Submissive/Excitement Urination
Your pup may have a submissive/excitement urination predicament if he only urinates during greetings, play, and physical contact. If this is the case, you may observe your pup displaying submissive postures during interactions. He may flinch or cower, roll over on his belly, tuck or lower his tail, duck his head, avert his eyes, flatten his ears or all of the above.
Medical Reasons for House Soiling
It’s usually a good idea to visit your puppy’s vet to exclude medical causes for house soiling. Some widespread medical reasons for inappropriate urination and defecation are:
Urinary Tract Infection (UTI)
Pups with UTI usually pee frequently and in small amounts. They may additionally lick their genital areas more than usual.
Intestinal Upset
If your pup is house trained but now defecates loose stools or diarrhea at home, he may have intestinal upset.
Change in Diet
If you’ve recently modified the quantity or kind of food you give your puppy, he may develop a house soiling issue. Often, following a diet change, a pup will defecate loose stools or diarrhea. He may need to poop more frequently or on a different schedule than before the diet change.
Methods to Housetrain Your Puppy
Housetraining is achieved by rewarding your puppy for eliminating where you want him to go and by stopping him from peeing or pooping in inappropriate places. You need to keep crating and confinement to a minimum; however, some amount of limitation is generally essential for your pup to learn to “hold it.
House Training Steps
Maintain your pup on a constant daily feeding schedule and take off food between meals.
Take the puppy outside on a regular timetable.
In between these outings, know where your dog is at all times. You have to watch for early signs that he needs to pee and/or poop so that you can anticipate and stop accidents from happening.
If you can’t watch your puppy, he must be restricted to a crate or a small room with the door closed or blocked with a kiddy gate. Otherwise, you can tether him to you by a leash that doesn’t give him much freedom around you. Progressively, over days or weeks, give your pup more freedom; you start with freedom a small area, like the kitchen, and little by little increasing it to larger areas, or multiple rooms, in your home.
Go along with your puppy outside and reward him whenever he eliminates outdoors with praise, treats, play or a walk.
If you catch your pup in the act of eliminating inside, clap sharply twice, sufficient to startle but not frighten him. When startled, the dog should stop in mid-stream. Promptly run with him outside, motivating him to come with you the whole way. Allow your pet to finish eliminating outside, and then reward him with happy praise and a small treat.
Additional Housetraining Tips
Clean mishaps with an enzymatic cleanser to reduce odors that might entice the pup back to the same spot.
Once your dog is housetrained in your home, he may still have accidents when you have visitors. That’s because young dogs have to generalize their learning to new surroundings. Just because they appear to know something in one spot doesn’t mean that they’ll automatically understand that thing everywhere. You’ll need to monitor your pup carefully when you visit new places together and be sure to take him out often.
What NOT to Do
Don’t rub your pup’s nose in his waste.
Don’t reprimand your pet for eliminating indoors. Rather, if you catch him in the act, make a noise to surprise him and stop him from peeing or pooping. Then immediately show your puppy where you want him to go by running with him outside, waiting until he finishes his business, and then praising him.
Don’t physically punish your pup for accidents. Understand that if your pup has accidents in the house, you neglected to properly supervise him.
Don’t clean with ammonia-based products. Urine contains ammonia. Cleaning up with ammonia can attract your puppy back to the same spot to pee again.
Teaching Your Housetrained Dog to Ask to Go Out
Some housetrained dogs show obvious signs when they will need to go out, like scraping or barking at the door. But others aren’t as good at telling people when they need to relieve themselves. They already know outside is the place to go, but they can’t work out how to get there. So they station themselves by a door and wait. At some point, their confused people may see them quivering with frustration and distress, ready to explode. If their people don’t see them soon enough, these dogs are forced to pee or poop inside, usually at the front of the door where they’ve been waiting.
Is Your Pup Really Housetrained?
Prior to making an effort to teach your dog to ask to go out, make sure you’re working with a communication problem, not a health, potty training or urine marking issue.
CONCLUSION
Housetraining your dog demands far more than a few heaps of old newspapers. This training requires caution, perseverance, an abundance of commitment and most importantly, regularity.
The greater consistency you are in adhering to the basic housetraining techniques, the quicker your dog will become familiar with appropriate behavior. It may take a few weeks to housetrain your pet, and with a few of the smaller breeds, a lot longer, but when you succeed, it will be something you and your dog will benefit from for years to come.
When housetraining, it’s very important to establish a routine. Like babies, pups function best on a regular routine. The timetable instructs him that there are times for everything: eat, play, nap, and even eliminate. In most cases, a puppy can handle his bladder an hour for every month of his age. Just be mindful to not go longer than this between toilet breaks or he’s bound to have an accident. If you can monitor him all the time or can’t come with him outside to eliminate, make sure that someone is there to accompany him do his business.
Supervision is another key to a successful housetraining. Don’t give your dog a chance to soil in inappropriate places. Keep an eye on him as much as you can. But whenever you’re not able to do so, make use of confinement methods. With this, crating is your best choice.
Lastly, don’t expect your dog to be all perfect. Few accidents in the house will happen, even if he’s completely trained. If mishaps occur, avoid punishing him. Instead, teach and remind him again what’s the right thing to do when he wants to relieve himself.

A Simple Key For actuele ethereum koers Unveiled
Donald Trump’s campaign has sometimes resembled a whistle-halt tour of broken-down manufacturing cities. Spots like Monessen, Pa., and Hickory, N.C., have arrive at be noticed as central to his rise — Which of Bernie Sanders, in advance of he bowed out — and symbols of a nationwide preoccupation during this election year: the downsides of globalization. Previously this 12 months, exploration that resulted in an educational paper from numerous economists titled “The China Shock” observed that between 1999 and 2011, The expansion in imports from China killed about two.4 million American Careers, one million or so of these in production. That’s a Substantially better effects than most economists were assuming, as well as the two.4 million determine has come up many times in debates above global trade. There’s a lot less specificity when it comes to one other aspect of your ledger, on the other hand. For all the look at winners and losers in the worldwide trading video game, an genuine accounting of what’s happening over the winning aspect overseas is incredibly elusive. At the same time as economists point to more affordable consumer goods and new Employment that trade brings to America, they’re struggling to say how many jobs are created in, say, Asia. Between close friends and within the news coverage I see, the dismissive assumption tends to be which the big winners in the game are the same elites, here and all over, who manage to take advantage of anything. But the fact is, there’s no deep comprehension of exactly what the gains are in other nations. The quantity of and what forms of Positions are created? To what extent are lives and nations transformed? There are numerous explanations the drawbacks have been given more attention as opposed to gains. In American political conversations, All things considered, the focus is understandably on domestic losses as an alternative to international Positive aspects. Trade also presents a basic circumstance of concentrated expenses and diffuse Positive aspects — the lower costs and higher work that trade can make are generally distributed thinly more than lots of beneficiaries, whilst the loss of jobs falls tough with a scaled-down number of people. But there is a a lot less-apparent rationale in addition: Economists haven’t accomplished a very fantastic career of pinning down the virtues of trade. In “The China Shock,” the authors David Autor, David Dorn and Gordon Hanson chastise their self-control for its relative silence on this entrance: “It is actually incumbent on the literature to a lot more convincingly estimate the gains from trade.”
youtube
I've encounter a single paper, although, that provides a good start line for thinking about what trade can mean for men and women abroad. A young Canadian economist at Wilfrid Laurier University, Brian McCaig, researched what occurred in Vietnam promptly soon after America slashed tariffs on products from that country in 2001 — a bilateral trade agreement similar to lots of Some others before and due to the fact that have opened up America to created items from Asia. He identified that above another a few several years, as the worth of clothing and garments equipment intending to The usa from Vietnam rose by 277 percent, the poverty stage in Vietnam fell to 19.five percent from 28.nine percent, two times as quickly mainly because it had fallen during the preceding four years and adequate to raise about 7 million people away from poverty. This wasn’t American food items-stamp poverty People Vietnamese had been escaping; it had been malnourished, dollar-a-working day poverty. McCaig will not declare that these variations have been generated solely through the surge in exports to The usa. By his estimate, only about 250,000 Employment had been designed in export-based production in Vietnam throughout People two yrs. But Individuals Careers, which have been far better-shelling out than Just about the rest available just before, had an unlimited ripple outcome: Each new factory posture triggered various other new Positions nearby. Usually, the greater specialised a region was in producing exports, the more rapidly poverty declined. In districts with by far the most publicity to producing, like Tien Giang, in the vicinity of Ho Chi Minh Metropolis, the poverty price fell about 2 times as fast from 2002 to 2004 as it did in more rural places like Ha Tinh, within the north. Even in The agricultural regions, dwelling expectations rose as staff in the metropolitan areas sent a reimbursement residence. Based on McCaig, this came to account for fifteen percent of the total profits in All those locations. Productiveness about the farms also improved as landowners tailored to fewer personnel. McCaig says it is hard to carry out The type of study he did on Vietnam in other places — few acquiring international locations retain reliably comprehensive data on work and poverty. He also points out that economists in the usa and Europe are typically far more enthusiastic about researching their particular economies. But McCaig advised me that Vietnam’s transformation resembles what other Asian nations have skilled following gaining usage of Western markets in the last few a long time. He assumes that other international locations would've experienced equivalent Added benefits. I requested him if there was a means for some again-of-the-envelope math to convey no less than a sense of how China benefited from the global trade that led to your lack of 2.4 million jobs in The us. It is not a simple calculation, because the expanding American openness to trade has not at all been the one catalyst driving China’s financial growth; between other components, its governing administration has also been shifting economic guidelines and building enormous domestic investments. With that caveat, even so, McCaig observed that if Chinese exports really did produce the elimination of one million American Employment in producing, as estimated in David Autor’s function, China would have had to switch them in proportion to how effective Chinese workers were as opposed with their American counterparts. On condition that it took roughly ten Chinese staff to match the output of 1 American employee over the past two decades, McCaig claimed he assumes that China might have necessary about 10 million new Positions to replace one million producing jobs in The usa. (It created feeling for companies in China to grow on this scale due to the fact Chinese employees produced a lot less than one particular-tenth what Us citizens did.) That accounts for just under 50 % of The brand new production Employment that China gained involving 2003 and 2011, next China’s entry into the earth Trade Organization in 2001, which gave the nation’s exporters most popular access to American people. Last year, economists at the College of Groningen, while in the Netherlands, stated that by their pretty rough estimates overall international desire for Chinese merchandise can have led towards the development of as many as 70 million Positions in China in the five years after China joined the W.T.O. This “export shock” has been explained by economists as A very powerful Think about China’s financial advancement within the 2000s; foreign customers were being capable of assist greater wages than Chinese customers could. The overall progress inside the time period described by Ethereum koers “The China Shock” assisted elevate 350 million Chinese above the nation’s poverty line of $1.ninety every day. Obviously, trade liberalization is just not often a boon for poorer international locations. For the duration of an earlier period of American trade agreements, specifically in Latin The united states, countries frequently agreed to reduce tariffs on their own shielded industries, like textile production in Brazil and India. Those people improvements often ended up hurting very poor staff in All those industries. But by 2000, McCaig and other economists instructed me, most countries experienced reduced their tariffs, and the growth of worldwide trade primarily intended that acquiring nations around the world got superior usage of wealthier people in The us and Europe. Other expenses have emerged, on the other hand. Urban Chinese are choking on air pollution and confronting expanding earnings inequality. In the United States, jobs have disappeared, and You can find social unrest. Our publicity to foreign markets is partly accountable, but economists attribute a lot of the career losses to changes in know-how and efficiency. (American production output has developed even as the quantity of manufacturing staff has shrunk.) On the flip side, being an write-up in The present Quarterly Journal of Economics factors out, the cheaper goods coming into The usa have particularly benefited the poorest People in america, who expend a lot more of their income on imported items and so help save more when trade makes goods less expensive. But After i spoke with David Autor, he explained to me that Regardless of the virtues or costs in America, they pale in comparison with The essential humanitarian Positive aspects that people in places like China and Vietnam have experienced due to trade with The usa. “The gains to your those who benefited are so monumental — they ended up destitute, and now they ended up introduced into the global middle class,” Autor states. “The fact that there are adverse penalties in America needs to be taken severely, but it doesn’t tilt the balance.”
Tumblr media
Autor told me that he doesn't maintain out hope that American politicians will convey this type of calculus on the election debate. But when the remainder of us want to contemplate trade in moral and humanitarian terms, not just for a political and financial subject, it seems imperative that you ponder tips on how to assign and Evaluate the values of a brand new task to someone that would usually be caught in dire poverty and also a missing position for somebody with at the very least some Variation of a security Web, which Americans have in contrast with many of the lousy persons within the establishing globe. Definitely there are ways to soothe the hardship on each side, and we must always attempt to figure them out. But trade inevitably includes some trade-offs. If we want to find out If they're worthwhile, we are able to’t just evaluate just one aspect with the transaction.

Wannabe Meatheads
There’s a certain, all-encompassing power which comes with knowing what your mission in the gym is, and why you train. Alas, in my rough estimation, 95% of lifters don’t know what they’re trying to achieve, let alone the why behind it. In many respects, these are wannabe meatheads.
FWIW: I’m not saying that 95% of you reading this will never make progress or achieve the results you’re after. Rather, without knowing what’s truly driving you, or taking the time to figure out exactly what you want to accomplish, you’re going to be challenged to truly move the needle forward.
Last week, as I lay the foundation for my current mission (more on this below), I stepped back under a heavily loaded barbell to knock out back squats for what surely was the first time in months. While they were a far cry from the silky smooth reps I was able to knock out four months ago, it did feel fantastic to step under a bar that struck a little fear in my soul, and toss that fucker around.
After months away from heavy work, it felt fantastic to jump back in and throw 375lbs around. Not as buttery as they once were, but that'll return in no time. #thepumpisthecure #wherethetacosat • • • • • #massthetics #masstheticsclan #doyouevenlift #meatheadproblems #teammpt #legworkouts #legday #gymflow #gymrat #bodybuilding #truenutrition #ironrebel #CBBFF #BCABBA #mirin #instabodybuilding #gains #quadzilla #swole #trainhard #shredded #bodybuildingnation #meathead #fitfam #muscle #elitefts #bodybuildinglife
A post shared by Get Swole with Alex Mullan (@alexmullan13) on Jul 22, 2017 at 3:42pm PDT
As of last week, I also happen to be back training at my “home gym” for the time being. Naturally, this means I keep running into people I haven’t seen in months or since competing, and there’s been no shortage of comments to the tune of:
“You’re a beast”
“How was your show?”
“It was really interesting to watch your prep”
“It was awesome to see you prep while travelling”
Which is all well and good for satisfying my ego, but here’s the thing (and this is something I preach inside Mullan’s Meatheads)…
I’m nothing special. I’m simply crystal-clear on my mission. Which, for the record, is doing what I must to improve my physique for when I step on stage again in two years — yes, that is my timeline, and I’m unwilling to bend or break as I move a little further down the path each day, and refuse to break focus.
Sure, “I want to look better,” “I want to squat 30 more pounds,” and “I just want bigger arms” are all valid reasons for getting your ass into the gym and training, but there’s always a deeper reason — the true reason that drives you to do what you do.
Is it because you know that improving your aesthetic will improve your confidence? Will adding 30 pounds to your back squat make you feel more capable in your daily tasks? Does the thought of having bigger arms, and needing to buy shirts where the sleeves aren’t so tight get you giddy inside?
These are the deeper, emotionally rooted drivers that drive us all, as humans, to make the choices that we do. When you understand that there’s something deeper going on, when you know your reason, the entire game changes.
The resistance that urges you to pass on the gym disappears. Overwhelming feelings of inspiration, the ensuing rush of motivation course through your veins, and action follows. Your progress accelerates, and change truly begins to take place, while obstacles that once handcuffed you, now fall before you like poorly-placed dominos.
There’s a certain, required mindset that needs to be at play if you want to enjoy continual progress, see your physique transform before your eyes, and watch the weight on the bar climb week-after-week. It’s the exact mindset I embody, and it’s not limited to just myself. You too, can tap into this way of thinking.
If I had to boil it down to a single sentence: your mindset must be such that you’re willing to do whatever is necessary to see the results you want (without neglecting your health, relationships, or using all the drugs). If that means turning away a piece of cake, resisting the urge to eat an entire pizza, or drag yourself to the gym when you’d much rathe Netflix & Chill all afternoon, so be it.
This is exactly why Mullan’s Meatheads has been such a boon to the swoley crew who make up it’s ranks. Even I myself have benefitted from having a group of like-minded lifters to hang out with every day.
I’ve mentioned this before, yet it bears repeating: One of the best parts in being a member of Mullan’s Meatheads is joining a community of people who all share a similar mission (the specifics may vary from person to person, but the overarching goal of improvement is standard).
We’re all there to support one another when times get tough. We share ideas, brain farts, and swolefies (post-workout selfies taken with a ridiculous pump). Best of well, we all grow and progress (physically and mentally) as a unit.
