So uh. It's been a hot second since I last made a rambling on The Stanley Parable. And good GOD I have a lot on my mind. So! Time to talk about The Player, Stanley... And how they are/he is... The exact same character, and the fandom doesn't even realize it.
(No, I'm not bashing anyone making them separate folks, of course not. I just want to talk about this almost YT clickbait fan theory sounding thing.)
(Also, spoilers to TSP/TSPUD)
Part 1: This is a story of a man named Stanley
Now, let's talk about who Stanley is. If I were to ask you who Stanley is, not in your interpretation, not in someone else's AU, not what people in the fandom characterize him as on average. Who is he, in canon? What in canon gameplay, is his personality? So no, Dev tweets do NOT count because that's an outside the game source, as much as I love the dev tweets.
Now you might be having trouble coming up with something other than "he likes pushing buttons?" Although the thing is... Pushing buttons isn't a a character trait or personality. That's an interest or like. Anyone can LIKE something and still be vastly different in personality. Sure what a person likes can be an indication for who they are, but that's it. It's an indication.
Or you could be arguing about the Up and Down Elevator ending where he essentially has a heart attack and dies, so maybe he's an introvert prone to anxiety or stage fright? Well remember, making Stanley die... Isn't a new thing Narrator can do. The Mariella ending, as our example here. So what makes you think that, with all the sarcasm he had in that ending before that part, that the heart attack isn't the Narrator's doing?
Maybe the Bucket Escape Pod ending?
OK, so Stanley... Cares about a bucket...? That's not a personality trait. And even then... Then what was with the Out Of Bounds Bucket ending? Where Stanley STABS the bucket?
But Stanley doesn't let go of the bucket in the Bucket Destroyer ending!
Who says the action button the player presses for that animation is to let go of the bucket? Certainly not the game. I've watched other people play TSPUD and NEVER KNOW that was an animation, because the game doesn't prompt that the action button can do something. Anytime you can interact with something, the game never labels what that interaction does. Some button inputs ARE labeled in game, but they label them EXACTLY as to what they do. All and all, the interaction button could be is just to hold the bucket closer around the Bucket Destroyer.
If someone can come up with something that gives Stanley a personality that I can't combat, I'd be surprised. Because the truth is... Stanley is, quite simply. Nothing. He is a blank model that moves from place to place and interact with things...
But there's a reason he can even interact with the game in the first place.
Part 2: I don't believe it... You're a real person.
Now, if you've seen TSP at all, you've probably heard of the Real Person Ending. This ending is the only one to roll credits. And is the only one that makes Narrator refer to the player directly as they play. But in that same ending, Narrator refers to Stanley and the Player as two entirely separate things here, so doesn't that make my whole idea fall apart? Well no. First off, pay attention to the wording here.
"No, that's not possible, I can't believe it. How had I not noticed it sooner? You're not Stanley. You're a real person. *sigh* I can't believe I was so mistaken. This is why you've been able to make correct and incorrect choices. And to think I've been letting you run around in this game for so long."
The player is defined as being able to make BOTH correct and incorrect choices. As if choices in general is what makes the Player... The Player. And what do we see at the end of this route?
"Stanley, please, I-I need you to make a choice. I need you to walk through the door."
The thing that makes "Stanley different from us" is that he makes NO choices. That despite all of what Narrator says in his ending, Stanley DOESN'T make good choices. He DOESN'T even make choices period. At least, nothing that's a choice in game.
And while you could see "I've been letting you run around in this game for so long." As just you running around in route, I'd like to think this is referring to the game as a whole. And Narry didn't notice for a long time.
So now I ask you, if Stanley isn't anything, and the player does EVERYTHING in Stanley's body... What does that leave these two... But one in the same? What does that leave but the Player playing the part of Stanley?
Part 3: Jim... Jim... Stanley.
During The Stanley Parable 2 expo, we hear the Narrator make us roleplay as Jim to understand the power of the button. (Assuming you actually hear him out on the instructions to roleplay as Jim.) And this comes full circle with the Stanley button in the epilogue. You want to know why this hits as hard as this does? Because the player has been roleplaying the part of Stanley the whole game.
Now this is not a new idea that the player roleplays Stanley. But when you really look at it through the lens of Stanley doesn't exist and that "Stanley" is the Player with a name... It makes it even more heartbreaking. That the feature of saying the players' name... Is technically more in the game then ever.
And as a reminder, to even get to the Expo and the prologue... You have to complete the Skip Button Ending. The ending where the Narrator reads and obsesses over negative reviews... From people who have played the game. From other players.
And he does anything he can to please them. A majority of the fandom likes to ship Narrator and Stanley together, and no matter your thoughts on it, this little post of mine coupled with the idea... Means that all of Narrator's "love" for Stanley extend to the Player. The Player is who he loves... And whether the "relationship" is the romantic pairing ship, or just a platonic care type of "love" ... He loves the Player to the point of bending over backwards to "fix" his story for them.
So why am I pointing this out? Why have I been rambling for this long about how the Player is the soul of who Stanley truly is? Maybe it's to point out the irony that the so called "canonically titled 'concept of divorce; the Narrator'" has a whole slew of Players that love him so long as the Stanley X Narrator ship exists? While funny, and a neat side effect, no.
Part 4: The Coloring Book Effect
You see, I've seen my way around fandoms over the years, and I've noticed something in particular specifically with video game characters, most of the time in indie titles. (It's for sure not limited to that, but it's most noticable with these guys.) And that has been something I've recently coined as The Coloring Book Effect. I don't know if it has a name proper, but this is what I've been using.
It's when a video game character is juuuust fleshed out enough to not fall so flat or become 2d (or they are the silent, neutral protagonist) but they are blank enough to come up with your own interpretation without it feeling too out of character.
I like to use Toby Fox's characters as examples. Now say what you will about that fandom, but in canon... I noticed that, for example, Sans isn't seen doing a whole lot. Sure we get ENOUGH to get glimpses into who he is, but we only have a base to work off of, really.
Now am I saying Sans is a bad character? Hell no. What I am saying is that Sans, and a lot of Toby Fox's characters, are perfect examples of The Coloring Book Effect. Where a character is outlined enough to give a clear shape, think of it as a coloring books blank line art, (kinda funny when most of the character's sprites in high detail are in black and white.) And then the creators essentially give their fandom the outline to color in.
Now some people just want to watch others color, some want to just color inside the lines and stick close to what they know of the character, but when given the chance... The fandom, even if the colors go outside the lines, gets so very WILDLY creative that you wouldn't even suspect it's from that coloring book they feel so fleshed out and colored. Sometimes it's for the worst and the color is messy all outside the lines, sure, but the best of the fandom can make those little hiccups still unnoticeable with just how WELL they colored the character.
And I see the Stanley Parable fandom doing that. They, the players, were given a very faint lined coloring page for Stanley... But they STILL ran with it, giving "Stanley" his own identity that felt wholly unique from person to person, just like how each player was different, possibly even from who THEY are as people. And I adore to see it. I adore watching fandoms make their own creative interpretations. So grab your coloring books and color away fandom!

Flank steak is one of my absolute favorite cuts of beef. When prepared properly it is honestly one of the best meals you’ll ever have. The chimichurri sauce is classically made with parsley and red wine vinegar, however, I thought I’d change that too with some bright, zesty ingredients. I promise you are going to love it. Warming up your tortillas is also a must, adding another layer of flavor to this meal.
When Traeger Grills asked me to partner with them to share some recipes and try out one of their grills, I honestly could not have been more excited. I am surrounded by neighbors who all have a Traeger Grill and it appeared I was the last one on the block without one. Luckily, I’ve been saving the perfect spot on my deck for this particular Traeger model.
Why a Traeger wood pellet grill as opposed to a gas or charcoal grill? First and foremost it’s the versatility. With a Traeger grill you can smoke, grill, bake, roast, braise and barbecue. The hardwood pellets naturally enhance the flavor of whatever you’re cooking and they come in a variety of flavors. Mesquite and pecan flavored pellets are a couple of my all-time favorites.
Because a Traeger grill manages the temperature for you, you don’t have to babysit your meat. A temperature probe will let you know when your meat has reached the level of doneness you’re trying to achieve. Once your meat is on the grill, you can attend to the other parts of your meal. It’s that easy.
I love chimichurri. If you’re not familiar with this beloved Argentinian condiment, it’s time you gave it a try. It’s traditionally made with parsley as previously mentioned. So if you happen to have an aversion to cilantro, by all means substitute parsley in this recipe.
Red wine vinegar is often used to bring acidity to traditional chimichurri, however, I prefer using a pungent white wine vinegar, fresh lemon juice and zest for a pop of flavor. Adding loads of minced garlic make this the best chimichurri you will ever taste. I seriously mean that. You will not be able to stop smothering this on top of your flank steak.
How delicious does this look? And you can see the smoke ring on the meat too. So much flavor right here and another reason cooking on a Traeger grill is so special.
You can easily char your tortillas over a gas flame on the stove, in a heated pan or throw them right on the grill before your meat is finished. They are a really nice addition to this meal.
I can’t get enough of these pictures. I just want to eat this meal again and again.

1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil
16 taco sized flour tortillas, warmed
Instructions
Add all marinade ingredients to a large Ziploc bag and let meat sit overnight in the refrigerator. Remove meat from refrigerator and bag 30 minutes prior to cooking.
In a medium bowl combine cilantro, garlic, oregano, white wine vinegar, lemon zest and juice, red pepper flakes and kosher salt. Whisk in olive oil.
When ready to cook the meat, start your Traeger grill on smoke with the lid open until the fire is established (4-5 minutes). Set the temperature to 450 degrees F (high) and preheat, lid closed, for 10 to 15 minutes.
Lift the flank steak from the marinade (discard the marinade) and place on the grill grate. Grill with lid closed for 10-12 minutes on each side. However, grilling time will dependent on the thickness and starting temperature of your steak, so it can vary by a lot ~ longer or shorter. Feel free to use the temperature probe and grill to medium-rare.
Transfer the steak to a cutting board and let rest for 5 minutes. Slice thinly on the diagonal across the grain. Serve immediately with warm tortillas and chimichurri sauce.
