Shippy ask: who are your greatest hero/villain rivals to ever do it in a sentai
Insane (eh, only mildly) question: what's your most common "you sort of put my kink in this show but you did it WRONG so I'm just annoyed you came so close now"
Clothing advice: any advice for coordinating stuff in the bodysuit region to look like streetwear because I've seen a few people on the wild in them looking great lately and I would enjoy secretly feeling like a starship captain
I mean have you seen Gekiranger. Have You Guys Seen Gekiranger. I know you specifically have but You, Reading This, Have You Seen Gekiranger? Tiger vs. Lion, literally feral untamed wild child raised by pandas in the forest vs elegant arrogant ambitious little princeling with a simpering girlknight at his side, purity and fury vs corruption and bitterness... You Guys... Jan and Leo (and I'm not calling him fucking Rio he's a LION the same way no one calls Mele the CHAMELEON "Mere" despite that being what dumbshit John Toei wrote in the mook) are the absolute peak of sentai hero/villain ships. Actually I would say the peak of toku hero/villain ships entirely. gaijug is just below and then like thiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiis far underneath those two is like, uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh actually idk, whatever KR hero/villain ship ppl have convinced themselves is peak ig. KR doesn't do very good hero/villain come to think of it. I guess it's because of all the main/secondary like how every sentai has its red/sixth (and usually red/blue too but I feel like that's not actually as common as ppl make it out to be, I think a lot of it is people just wanting an episode 1 ship)
Honestly, if my kinks show up in shows at all, they're often done perfectly bc people don't think they're sexual so don't have to pretend they're not (eg. The Stig being essentially a moto-drone like WOW) or the entire premise of the show is based around it (... like Super Sentai and Kamen Rider, even though the suits have not been as sexy as I'd like lately) lmao. I did get a bit annoyed at The Orville for giving Isaac (very sexy faceless kind of evil robot) a human appearance and emotions at first but the whole arc was his sexy milf doctor girlfriend going "ehhh actually I like you more when you're a sexy faceless kind of evil robot" which is incredibly based (as is the fact his sexy milf doctor girlfriend is The Sexy Outfit Wearer of the show a la Deanna Troi despite being a canon mother of a teenage boy and visibly middle-aged). ummm but I think all shows should have more crossdressing that isn't for jokes and more femdom or at least FLRs that aren't "bitch wife controls wimp man" coz like ew
Bodysuits are pretty easy to style casually! If you're talking more leotard style that are like a top with a crotch and no legs then a really sexy thing to do is wear low waisted bottoms so the skin on your hips is showing. Kind of like an advanced whaletail lol. Looks best if the bottoms are big baggy jeans/trackies or really slutty tiny pleated/otherwise voluminous miniskirts, I'd stay away from anything tight, small top big bottom energy yk. If you're talking about the full-body tight catsuit type, I think they're always gonna look a bit costumey, but you can still style them. Wearing a cropped/waist-length non-tight jacket over the top always looks super cool, look at 80s Rogue from X-Men! A floor-length coat would look cool too, rather than balancing the silhouette like with the baggy jeans or puffy jacket, it reduces the sex-costumey look by de-dramatising the silhouette by giving it a solid background. There's a lot of ways to play around! Bodysuits are essentially an inner layer the way tshirts and leggings used to be lol so you can honestly do whatever but I think if you want to be stylish you can't go wrong with the balancing act.

I too am a member of the Taiya-hater club and every episode I question why I'm not dropping this show until they show me scraps of Mira or Agent Shirabe or the Three Idiots, but I think from now on I'll be fastforwarding through new eps just for them. My only sentai are Zenkai and halfway through Donbros so being forced to watch Boonboom Red as the main character is like beibg fed cardboard after a pizza.
Oh man. if your only sentai experience is zenkai and donbros, two very experimental and Not A Typical Sentai sentais, yeah boonboom must hit a real sour note since its a return to basics lol
I personally wouldn't call it bad so far, a solid B+ imo, but Taiya is def the weakest character, and his blandness is only more evident whenever an episode is focused on him
I can suggest some good sentais that are more typical in structure for you to watch in the future:
Gokaiger- the core team is phenomenal here, bursting with personality and incredible chemistry between each of them. this IS an anniversary sentai, meaning past rangers are constantly showing up to be apart of the plot, but you do NOT need to have seen their shows to get the gist and have a fun time. you're following the gokaigers and their character arcs are always the main focus. plus they're aliens (space pirates even) that don't know jackshit abt Earth, so you and them are on the same level of knowledge lol
Idk why folks don't recommend this as a starter sentai more often. it was my first ever sentai and I picked the next sentais I watched based on how entertained I was by a past characters appearance. its how I watched go-onger and carranger (and liveman but I don't wanna talk abt that)
Also Marvelous is best red. this is an objective fact we as a community all agree on, even if he's not our own personal favorite red
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Speaking of go-on
Go-onger- the canon, main strength of this team is their stupidity. VERY CARTOONY, heavy on hijinks, light on serious plot (it was written by a veteran kids anime writer and boy can you tell). if you like loud genki kinda assholeish shonen protags than you'll love the red Sosuke. if you don't...perhaps skip this one lol. Sosuke is a biiiig make or break of someone's enjoyment of go-on. the villains are great tho, very team rocket, kinda like the Sanseaters in boonboom
(and its a much better car sentai. Speedor is there all the time. boonboom only has Speedor for one episode. I rest my case)
Tumblr media
Zyuohger- if you need an animal sentai under your belt, this is the best one. the red, Yamato, does get more focus than the rest of the team (many more power ups as well) but he's a likeable character played by a guy who can actually act. GREAT VILLAINS, they evolve over time as well and I can't say much w/o spoiling things, but I'll just say Genis caused his own demise
Also I haven't seen donbros but I know the donbros sixth is deranged, so if you need more deranged sixths in your life you should watch zyuoh for Misao
Tumblr media
Gekiranger- if you really love serialized story telling and characters growing and changing and all that, I cannot recommend geki enough. in a lot of sentai, the weapons are usually just found or given, which isn't inherently a bad thing but I can see why someone wouldn't care for that. every weapon and power up the gekis get is always earned thru them overcoming some obstacle, literal or figurative, so its that much more rewarding when the new Marketable Touy is used
Also they're kung fu fighting cats. did I mention they're kung fu fighting cats. the red was raised in the woods and literally acts like a feral animal most of the time. he does mellow out over the course of the show, but honestly if someone doesn't like Jan from the jump I don't trust them (he has CRAZY yaois with the main villain Leo btw)

It's the Dutchpinions On Red/Pink post!
Under a cut due to length, this is the result of me struggling to sleep at 3am, and wondering about the potential red/pink pairs possible in post-2000s Sentai.
Behold, my incredibly incorrect (but also completely right and infallible) bad takes!
(Warning: There's spoilers all over the place, because it was kind of hard to avoid in certain cases.)
Timeranger
Canon red/pink and total asspull. They already had Domon and Honami for the star-crossed Can’t Be Together tragic pairing, and Tatsuya/Yuuri seemed to just manifest out of nothingness. It’s like the writers realised they’d forgotten to have the sole woman on the team fulfil what we ALL KNOW THAT SOLE WOMAN’S PURPOSE IS and threw a dart at a wheel of the remaining guys.
Rating: Ugh.
Gaoranger
Being an inoffensively forgettable series I don’t remember much about the team and their dynamics. I do remember that they have white instead of pink, and that white is way too young for red.
Rating: No pair up, good call.
Hurricaneger
Doesn’t have a pink, unless you consider Ikkou’s colour pink-adjacent enough to count. In which case it’s a top notch match up. Those boys are in homosexual love.
If we’re counting “woman on team” as the pink, then it’s Nanami, and I think she and Yousuke would murder each other if they tried dating. So they lose points for that.
Rating: A+ for potential gay. B- for potential murder.
Abaranger
I don’t like pairing any of the adult men in their twenties with the girl still in high school. Obviously red and pink aren’t a thing here, but my point still stands for the canon blue/pink they huffed paint and decided to go with post-canon.
Rating:
Tumblr media
Dekaranger
The red/pink here wouldn’t be awful, I don’t think? But Ban is too Like That, and Umeko has a sweet canon thing with green. They managed to make a complementary colour contrast combo work in a whole other way.
Rating: Not the worst. Which isn’t exactly an endorsement.
Magiranger
Not applicable for obvious reasons. Does get bonus points for the canon last minute pairing being so hilariously stupid (complete with magical shotgun wedding overseen by a catholic cat) that I can’t even hate it.
Rating: Houka’s bi and Tsubasa’s gay and that’s all that matters.
Boukenger
Another canon red/pink. This is one that I personally was completely blindsided by, but have had mutuals tell me that it was built up over time so I have to take their word for it. I actually thought if anyone was getting paired up it’d be yellow/black, which would have been weird on its own given they’re more like siblings.
I suspect I was just too distracted by pink being an autistic gun lesbian to even remotely consider her having any romantic plot with a dude, and I sure as hell don’t remember her interacting with red for anything non-work related at any given point. God knows what they talk about on that rocket.
Rating: This is the sentai version of that movie where Jennifer Lawrence is trapped on a starship with Crisp Rat.
Gekiranger
Jan legally can’t date anyone, and there’s no pink. So let’s instead take a minute to think about Mele/Rio, the canon pairing who miraculously made me like a pairing that uses a trope I cannot stand.
Rating: I know they’re off having the most Addams Family Goth romance in the afterlife. I feel it in my bones.
Go-Onger
Everyone on this team is homosexual. The only way red/pink is happening is if Gunpei persuades Hant to engage in roleplay.
Rating: They literally have an entire episode about Sousuke’s tragic summer romance with Kento Handa.
Shinkenger
We did it. We found the milquiest of toasts. He’s a boy, she’s a girl. The only other girl option is 15, so red/pink it is.
Rating: I don’t think Takeru knows what a girl is.
Goseiger
Another inoffensively forgettable series. I do remember that the red and pink in this are kind of sweet? Like they’re not canon, but I wouldn’t hate it if they were. They actually get to be friends onscreen and are both Cute Chipper 20yos, so sure, go ahead.
Rating: Eh, 's fine.
Gokaiger
I have to admit I never really thought about Marvellous/Ahim romantically at any given point. They’re friends, they’re bros, they have the Sweet Princess Meets Snarky Pirate thing going for them. Not really my bag but sure why not. That said...
As a last minute pairing they would have been annoying as fuck.
Rating: Luka gets REALLY salty for like three months after they get together and no one’s brave enough to bring it up.
Go-Busters
No pink, but also the only girl on the team is Yoko. Refer back to my Abaranger “20yo men dating girls in high school” notes, and consider that they’re siblings, Your Honour.
Rating:
Tumblr media
Kyoryuger
Canon red/pink, and the last minuteiest of last minute pair ups. I have legit no idea why they decided they needed a romance in this show. It’s perfectly okay without it and even as someone who doesn’t particularly ship it, Nossan/Candelira is very cute! They didn’t need to add another romance!
Daigo spends the whole thing about as interested in Amy as a concrete brick, and Amy seemed way more concerned with Yayoi in a Not Heterosexual way.
Rating: Whatever the writers were on, I want no part of it.
ToQger
I don’t really think about shipping for this one (again, for obvious reasons), but I wouldn’t be particularly bothered by the red/pink here having a similar puppy love crush situation to blue/yellow. I’m just not really interested.
Rating: They have better things to do. Like drink apple juice.
Ninninger
Another team rendered Not Applicable. I mean technically it would be legal but it’s. Y’know. Still weird.
Rating: You stop that.
Zyuohger
White instead of pink again. I think these two repel the idea of romance between them so strongly that if they’d got them together the universe would have suffered a minor meltdown and just erased the franchise from existence.
Rating: ????
Kyuuranger
Lucky and Raptor would be a wild pairing, if only for how out of left field it would be. Morbidly fascinating, if nothing else.
Rating:
Tumblr media
Lupat
Pairing either red with Tsukasa would be punishable at the Hague.
Rating:
Tumblr media
Ryusoulger
My opinion is going to be biased by the fact I didn’t really buy the team as being particularly close anyway; this series’ red/pink would be…fine. In the way breathing nitrogen with my oxygen is fine. I didn’t ask for it, I don’t particularly want it, but also it’s not going to kill me instantaneously. These two do at least have an onscreen history of friendship, and aren’t hideously ill-matched.
Rating:

I got bored so I started thinking about the importance of the various Summer Movies for Super Sentai since sometimes they can be completely irrelevant and a wast eof time or will be important to the plot somehow and comeback in a way that makes you wish you saw the movie. (Note I have not seen every Sentai with a Summer Movie and some of these are based purely off of my memory since I haven't rewatched some seasons in forever)
Gaoranger: The Summer Movie is fun to see Gao Knight but literally nothing from it comes back in any meaningful or noticeable to my memory
Hurricaneger: If you wanted to see Tenrai Senpuujin several episodes early, then here you go! This one is just kinda there from what I remember like it's fine but it's placement is awkward and they don't even bother to mention Tri Condor appearing in the movie first at all.
Abaranger: This is a must watch for a multitude of reasons, but the events of this movie do come back during the show in a very big way so it's worth watching.
Dekaranger: It's more Dekaranger go watch it for fun. Dekaranger doesn't even have that big of a plot in the first place so this is just a lot of fun so watch it
Magiranger: This expands more on the lore of the world and does some foreshadowing for other stuff in the show but isn't extremely necessary. Watch it if you want to see Hikaru get bullied for no reason
Boukenger: From what I remember of Boukenger, this movie just advertised that the machines 6-10 could in fact combine and then added another Precious that did not really get talked about again
Gekiranger: I haven't seen all of Gekiranger but I have seen the movie and it debuts an amazing mech form that does come back quite often but it's not like this movie invented completely if that makes sense
Go-Onger: The series takes like two episodes of its runtime to literally bring back the movie characters and general plot so yes you do need to watch it
Shinkenger: The Summer Movie toy appears quite often in the show and post series content so yes do watch this. It's good regardless of its status as necessary anyways one of the best summer movies
Goseiger: The Summer Movie toy shows up I think a totalc of one extra time in the series and they don't even bother to reference that it came from the movie like at all its honestly not worth the time
Gokaiger: it's a fun time but nothing that happens in the movie changes or develops anything we didn't already know about the cast and their end goals. (Watch the vs Gavan movie though that shit is fire)
Kyoryuger: The Summer Movie cast, toy, and villain all come back in the main series and while they do provide minor context it's good to know the full movie regardless. It's also just super fun anyways
ToQger: not super necessary since it never gets directly mentioned until a Vs. Movie but this is genuinely one of the best movies they've made and when you watch ToQger along with this movie you'll understand
Ninninger: The most I can say about this movie is that the mech shows up the Vs ToQger movie for like 2 minutes which was neat
Zyuohger: This movie was cool but the mech and general plot I wanna say only get brought up like once for a quick reminder that it existed I think? Also Yamato gets beaten up a lot in this movie as is Zyuohger tradition
Kyuranger: Genuinely I was so excited to see the summer toy in this movie and I could not tell you a si gle thing that happens and neither can the cast of characters cause they never once bring it back
LuPat: Surprisingly yes this is necessary for something that happens at the end of the show. If you know, you know.
Ryusoulger: This is one of the more recent seasons + movie I watched and quite honestly I could not tell you much of what happens in the movie because for as much build up in the series led up to it, it impacted the story so minimally the show does a perfect job of summing it up without wasting the time it took to watch the movie. Whatever lore they dropped in the movie, you get in the show but at least seeing the lore in action is cool instead of not seeing it
Kiramager: Okay technically not a Summer Movie due to COVID but it counts in my heart forever. This is somewhat necessary they built it up a bit with the main villain being name dropped before her appearance and then they reference it in the literal last episode but its not like you're missing much if you choose to not watch it. I do recommend seeing it though for a certain scene. If you know, you know.
Donbrothers: The most recent movie and honestly I could not tell you if it was necessary at all considering the show isn't over but Inoue did bother to spend a whole two minutes to reference the movie happening and a single scene referencing it did happen so yknow. Go for it. I will say it is fucking hilarious and I couldn't breath at some points

Send Me A Character
Racules
Favorite thing about them I really love his expressions and mannerisms. I like how he widens his eyes when he's annoyed and the way he handles his sword. He's under constant pressure but has to keep his composure but he slips a bit from time to time which I enjoy. I appreciate it all the more knowing that it's an act he's playing up, which I thought it was, but confirmation just made it better. Him playing it up parallels with Gira, although Racules went further with it.
Some more Racules thoughts - Note that some things are outdated as this post was made early on in the series
Least favorite thing about them He raised the taxes in Shuggodam, or did he? It's never mentioned past episode one, so I literally don't know if he raised the taxes himself or if the tax collector was making an error. It seems like it's used as a hint of Racules not being as great as the people think, but I would like more elaboration on that. Also he was planning to kill the scientists working on figuring out the secrets of the Ohgercalibur Zero, however there was a sense of guilt and dread about doing this. Racules does make a lot of empty threats so his threats all need to be taken with a grain of salt honestly.
Favorite line I'll give you a few:
"If I stood to gain more power... Then I would sell my soul to the devil himself!" - When talking to Jeramie about colluding with the Bugnarak to attack other nations - Really playing it up with an evil laugh and everything, leaving Jeramie stunned
"I am the nation." - Signature line that Racules uses throughout the series to elavate himself above others
"I have returned from the depths of hell." - Reiterating Gira's declaration when he appeared before Racules after having been thought to be dead by the world - Shows both a parallel between them and how they both are playing up their evil king roles.
brOTP Racules & Kaguragi - Scheming with my brother-in-law - What if my sister got engaged to you so that our nation could benefit from the demi Shugods, but she's also scheming for me to possibly take your throne. And what if we were liars who had little schemes and manipulated the people around us to get what we want, but we were both kings?
OTP Suzume & Racules - Literally married - They lived together for over a decade and were engaged in that time. The marriage was under an agreement between Shugoddam and Toufu, but I do feel there's genuine care between Racules and the Dybowski family, hence why he puts trust in them. With Suzume it's like there is some parts that are an act but others aren't. I'm not really sure how to explain it but I do feel Racules cares for Suzume's well-being as he does Douga, hence why he allowed them to run away when Desnarak took over Shugoddam and Racules was backed into a corner. He also never pushes away or denies her affections, although he may seem a bit awkward about it.
Tumblr media
scan by @mirai-e-jump - her post with all scans with translations
nOTP Aside from the obvious, I haven't seen any that are prominent enough to be labelled this.
Random headcanon Racules enjoys cooking but rarely does it - Based on nothing I just like the idea
Unpopular opinion I don't think Racules was ever obligated to take care of Gira. I also don't think Racules just straight up decided to abandon Gira at the drop of a hat, the situation is more complicated than that. Racules is morally gray, much like many other characters in Sentai have been, he uses questionable methods in order to do what he believes is right and in the grand scheme of things may be right. Racules needed to do a lot of things to get Dugded's trust to get the power he needed to break the Husty lineage from Dugded by killing Dugded. In short, Racules is no worse than characters like Rio from Gekiranger or Burai from Zyuranger.
Song I associate with them
Favorite picture of them I have so many photos of Racules, but this one's my current favorite:

Jeramie
Favorite thing about them Again with the expressions and mannerisms. I like how he smiles big smiles and how sad his eyes look when he's upset. When he meets his mother again and his lips are quivering and he's on the brink of tears but also in shock... peak.
Least favorite thing about them In his early appearances he'd casually use his silk to create images and spell out words but now he mainly uses his silk for average things like making webs to lament in or grabbing things. Favorite line Here's a bunch:
"We'll see how much I amuse them." - Using subtext to scheme
"Besides, this time... I have people who worry about me... My good friends." - Jeramie and Gira talking about how Jeramie is doing after taking the fall for his fellow kings
"Well, now!" - Signature phrase that he uses throughout the series
"Instead of ruling over everything... I once again find myself ruing over everything." - Jeramie lamenting after his plans just make the situation worse
"I will never surrender my protagonist status again." - After lamenting and sorting out his feelings about Daisorg being revived and Racules working with the Bugnarak, along with his role in it all
"It seems I was the one who didn't read between the lines." - Jeramie learning that he has misinterpreted the situation and didn't understand the true extent of Hymeno's grief
"The fate of the world itself is my story to dictate." - Jeramie declaring his role not long after meeting the kings
brOTP Yanma & Jeramie - Webdev - They're just really fun
OTP Jeramie & Gira - Soulmates actually - I wrote about them here
nOTP -
Random headcanon Jeramie doesn't like the taste of peppermint - Based on the fact that spiders don't tend to like the scent of peppermint, but Jeramie is part human so I'd think he wouldn't mind the scent too much but the taste would be too much
Unpopular opinion Jeramie took 2 years to be comfortable to bring his sleeve up to his elbow, and dresses head to toe daily. He wouldn't wear revealing clothing casually.
Song I associate with them
Favorite picture of them Again, I have a lot of pictures but here's my favorite right now:

For the toku asks: 1, 4, 5, 6!
1. How did I get into toku?
In 2018, my best friend was trying to write an OOO fanfic and was telling me -who knew nothing about toku and didn't even have a Power Rangers background- about the disembodied gay bird arm in said fic. I got very stuck on the fact that BIRDS DO NOT HAVE ARMS, POCKY!!! and sputtered a lot. She proceeded to (poorly) continue explaining the premise of OOO to me until I was like "...then what happens?" and agreed to watch it.
4. Thoughts on what I'm currently watching:
Consider yourself lucky I watched more Ultraman yesterday, or this would be a largely incoherent yell about Saber.
So I'm currently watching Ultraman Ace, which is the oldest toku series I've tried to date. I haven't found it very engaging compared to new gen Ultraman and have decided it's best to watch in small doses. I started it a year and a half ago, lost interest at episode 14, and am now only at episode 21.
The kaiju are...special in this one. They blow up a lot and despite being organic, can, like, shoot bullets out of their fingers and stuff?? Ace is basically a fusion between two of the characters, Seiji and Yuko, so that's kind of different at least.
At the rate I'm going, I'll finish this series five years from now!
5. Favorite main hero:
Rider - Philip from W is probably my favorite main guy overall. I tend to like side or background characters more, but I really love Philip. He's such a little gremlin, but his character development is so great, and the way he and Shotaro balance each other's strengths and weaknesses to make W strong is lovely.
Sentai - Kando Jan from Gekiranger! He's a very good boy with a very big burden placed on him. I am not at all put off by Jan-speak, because I'm a sucker for characters with interesting speech patterns. He's quirky and cute and I enjoy him.
Ultraman - It's Geed. Riku is such a dear dingdong and I want to mom at him.
6. Favorite secondary character:
How are we defining "secondary" here? I'm going to take it as "character who's not the main/lead guy".
Rider - Parad from Ex-Aid. I love that puzzle boy to bits. He too goes through some great character development as he learns to value life. His connection with Emu is right up my alley. And Perfect Knockout is one of my favorite suits ever in anything.
Sentai - I really, really love Fukami Gou from Gekiranger. He's such a dingus and he tries to be badass, but he's just kind of soft-hearted. And despite being a wolf, we all know he's really a cat.
Ultraman - The original fancy garbage, Mr Jugglus Juggler himself.

OISB Kamen Rider Franchise (pt 1 of ?)
I have been into Kamen Rider about since I found myself in college stumbling onto Den-O and Gekiranger at the same time and stuck very close to it ... uuuup until I tried to review it weekly on youtube.... Had tried to catch back up but, basically have been out of the loop since Reiwa era started... anyways, spoiler warnings for Ryuki, Ghost, and Zero One
I accept Precure Black as an honorary Kamen Rider, and anyone who has a problem with Precure anyone being included, or a woman can't be a Kamen Rider, you can talk to mister Black RX about that
I really... do not like Ryuki. I know it's a lotta people's fave, and it helped lead to Madoka and there are real good bits to it but I just... The first time the antagonist comes in to reset character development because characters were getting to friendly, to the ending that just, put a serial killer and arsonist back on the street I just did not like it.
Oh... I HATE Ghost. I don't think I'll ever hate a Kamen Rider series as much as I HATE Ghost. The writing bad enough that I can feel when different writers come on, or the lead disappears to work on the movie coming back only to introduce character details never a part of the story UNTIL they needed tie-in references to the movie. The editing even for a weekly low budget live action kid's show, glaringly obvious use of footed scrapped and redubbed over to give it the current story's context. The grating way that every time our hero died he came back stronger. How the first 'history fact' they introduce is literally wrong and it's documented Japanese history! How those two last points clash with the theme about 'the importance of inspiring people who light the future' as well as 'you only have one life to live'. The suits, due to having so much inner lighting going on just look bulky and the hoodies don't hide that. God and how they wrote the side characters- I need to move on, I literally spent over 40 minutes straight discussing my issues with Ghost before.
My favorite Kamen Riders, are not what I would recommend to people as their first, since Gaim, Faiz, and Fourze, are not structured written or directed like standard Kamen Riders and will not really help to familiarize people with the franchise
I am REALLY uncomfortable with the setting to 01. The 'happy to serve' slave android race, the main character being just an underdog president of a multi-billion dollar company going up against the evil rival who is evil because they are a multi-billion dollar company that is ALSO multi-national. The mangaka episodes x.x
Rider chip version of Kakusei is better than the base version, but the base version of Flashback is better than Rider Chip's
Full Force better than Lords of Speed
I'll never forgive parents groups for what Hibiki turned into at the halfway point
Folks keep swinging, and it's far from perfect, but Decade is still the best Kamen Rider anniversary series.
Toei are cowards for only putting up the first two episodes of near every Kamen Rider series on their global channel along with some rather low res versions of some movies and crossovers
Shout Factory, for the love of God, Buddha, and the Rider Kick, please work on expanding your Kamen Rider selection for streaming?!

i've seen, in this order: build, ooo, den-o, amazons s2 (no i did not watch season 1 i wanted to watch akaso eiji lmao), w, sazer-x, wizard, kyoryuger, shinkenger, lupat, fourze, ex-aid, gokaiger, kiva, decade, go-onger, and just finished ginga/s. i have a list for the kamen riders cause i want to finish all the heiseis before watching zi-o, but i need some sentai recs (i have some that have actors i know and zenkaiger because i have seen too much stacey to NOT be affected) and also some ultraman recs please!
So you watch stuff bc of actors, well then: magiranger, go-busters, gekiranger, ultraman x, orb, geed, cosmos. But I think you'll love Orb, if you have to choose one to start that's the one.

you're losing yourself with the life that you are leading, honey
Fandom: Juuken Sentai Gekiranger Characters: Kandou Jan, Rio (with a guest appearance by Ran and Retsu at the end) Song: "Sunburn," The Living Tombstone (playlist here)
It’s not a sparring match, but it’s not really combat, either. They’re too evenly matched at this point for one to beat the other with skill alone, and they both know the terrain too well for that to be an advantage, so it’s just a question of Rio’s greater experience and weight versus Jan’s furious tenacity and unparelleled endurance. But they both know that this is for no greater stakes than their own satisfaction, because the entire time they’re smiling.
Or—at least, Jan is, his crooked grin lighting up his face with every blocked strike until Rio feels like he could be blinded by its unbearable, incomprehensible joy. If Rio was able to smile so freely before his death, he can’t recall it, and certainly dying has done nothing to improve the situation. If he knew how to smile, though. If he knew how to smile like that, he might smile, simply for the unexpected pleasure of seeing Jan here for at least a fleeting moment.
He gains the advantage for a moment and knocks Jan to the ground, pinning him. The Wailing Ball sits on its cord around his neck—it has enough spiritual weight to follow him here, Rio supposes. “It’s good to know,” Rio says, “that you dream of me.”
Jan blinks at him. “Am I dreaming?”
“…of course you didn’t realize. You remember that I’m dead, don’t you? I had expected to fade, but I suppose that I’m a wandering spirit.”
“Why would that stop you showing up? You’re always go-go-going.”
Rio rolls his eyes and then grabs Jan’s chin, forcing him to stop wriggling for a moment and just be looked at. “I would have expected death to be thirst unending,” he says softly, “not peaceful.”
Jan smiles up at him, hands coming up to rest on his waist in something that might turn into an attempted throw at any minute, or might not. “That’s good! You deserve something nice-nice, so you can rest.”
“I don’t, but thank you.”
“Why wouldn’t you? Hey, did you ever love it?”
“I—love what?”
“Fighting! Beast Fist! Maybe even Predatory Fist! Did it make you feel good-good in your heart ever?”
Rio stares at him.
Jan’s grin widens, and then—his grip tightens, and he throws, and they’re back to fighting, ranging up and down the hillside.
This time Jan gets the pin. He’s not as heavy as Rio, but his bony weight is still shocking as he sits down on Rio’s midsection, legs crossed like a yogi, beaming, the Wailing Ball gleaming on his chest. And—the fact that things have weight in this in-between space is fascinating and strange, but Rio is jolted out of his consideration of it by Jan’s cheery, “You didn’t answer my question! Did you ever really really really love it?”
Rio frowns, staring into the indistinct sky past Jan’s wild hair and trying to remember if he did ever love the work, or if it was only about power. He remembers glimmers of happiness studying alongside Gou and Miki, the satisfaction of practicing with Mele (who is somewhere around here, if he hasn’t faded then she can’t have done either), even some interest in the training offered by the sages of Predatory Fist. Not love, though. He doesn’t remember loving it.
Except near the end of things. Except for the roar of joy in his chest, fighting Jan and seeing that he understood, that he knewwhat it was to fight, that this untamed thing had somehow taken in the knowledge he’d been offered and made it something beautiful.
He had loved that.
He says, “Yes, sometimes.”
Jan smiles smugly at him and says, “I thought so,” and dammit, he knows Rio’s thinking about him, he must. It’s his dream, after all, Rio just got dragged into it by his…his…
He’s the one who brought Rio here. That means something.
The smug smile unfading, Jan shifts out of his cross-legged seat on Rio’s stomach and just lies down on top of him, chin on his crossed arms, and says, “I loved fighting you too.”
--
Jan twitches in his sleep, hands coming up in an unconscious approximation of some form, and Retsu blinks groggily and meets Ran’s gaze over the top of his head. “Is he…dreaming about fighting?”
“He must be.” Ran yawns hugely, only half-awake herself. “Must be fighting someone good, too, he looks really happy.”

18 and 19 for the toku questions?
If you could meet any actor, who would it be?
honestly probably Matsuda Satoshi (Kamen Rider Knight/Akiyama Ren), not only one of my fave characters but genuinely seems like a lovely person. I've already met one I'd like to meet (did I ever mention how nice Murakami smells lol) and another one (Maaaaaaaaasahiro!) seems ummmmm unhinged lmao which you know. tracks.
If you could go back and change one show, what would you change?
I would love to un-fuck Ex-Aid and Zero-One's scheduling and have them both have normal runlengths and not have to cram in their finales :( Both really good shows but still. u know. As for shows that have issues that were fixable and just Weren't, I'd like a version of Abaranger without all the rapey undertones (and outright alien rape/forced pregnancy/birth But She's The Villain So It's Fine Right) or a version of Gekiranger without that damn pervert elephant yes I understand pervert sensei is a common trope haha Master Roshi I know I don't care and I don't like him DIE anyway 2000s sentai is really good most of the time but omg. those Little Things

Kisekae Insights #26: The Superhero Project Prelude (a preview of things to come)
Tumblr media
(Art by blakehunter)
My journey into tokusatsu began in 2013 when I watched Power Rangers Samurai on television and was enthralled at the use of kanji in the series. This led me to learn about Super Sentai through watching its counterpart, Samurai Sentai Shinkenger. Later, I began to learn about Kamen Rider through watching Decade thanks to its crossover arc with Shinkenger, which would lead me to watch other Super Sentai and Kamen Rider series. Eventually, I also learnt about Metal Heroes through watching crossover movies and Ultramen after watching some episodes of Orb online out of curiosity (Ultraman was on TVB through satellite back in the day, though I never really cared for it).
While the adaptations of Super Sentai and Kamen Rider in Gokaiger and Decade were among the initial elements teased and hyped for the Moushouden Series, it should be noted that they had their roots in previous series. In the final instalment of the second run of Kisekae Insights, allow me to walk you through how I implemented Super Sentai before 2018 and give you all a little bit of a preview of what is to come.
Samurai Mode: The prototype powers
The second half of Series 9 in 2014 featured the Doctor and his companions becoming beta testers for the Superhero Project in the form of Samurai Mode. The arsenal of Shinkenger was adapted, but the names were kept close to their adaptation counterparts, with the exception of the core rangers’ morphers, which are named the ShodoPhones. The Samurai Morpher and the Gold Ranger’s powers were the first to be developed for alpha testing; their tester, Hiroki’s assistant who was also one of his “triad” comrades, would go on to become ShinkenGold when the Superhero Project was launched. Akari had also managed to get her hands on a ShodoPhone as well, presumably having been stolen from UNIT.
Red Samurai Ranger: Hiroki Ichigo
Blue Samurai Ranger: Momoka Mizutani
Pink Samurai Ranger: Angelina Mouseling
Green Samurai Ranger: The Doctor
Yellow Samurai Ranger: Satoyuki Saitō
Gold Samurai Ranger: Hiroki’s assistant
Female Red Samurai Ranger: Akari Ichigo
Samurai Mode was first used by the Doctor and his companions on Destination One, but unlike in Shinkenger, they weren’t fighting demons or monsters; they were fighting Girl Power and their allies. Following that adventure, the Doctor passed his ShodoPhone on to Storm Dasher, who used it when he fought Lord Tirek alongside Twilight Sparkle on Equestria. Dasher did not transform into the Green Samurai Ranger, but he did temporarily transform into an alicorn – an unintentional foreshadowing of things to come in the Moushouden Series. Dasher gave his ShodoPhone back to the Doctor at the end of the episode.
As for the other five, they went on to fight at Sekigahara, Osaka and Kyoto (Honnōji and Nijō Castle), though they never used their Samurai Mode powers at Sekigahara. The Doctor would rejoin them when they fought the final battle in Yokohama as he had been on Trenzalore during the events of the Series 9 finale.
The year after, I wrote a “director’s cut” version of the arc which is basically just a remake but with the Samurai Mode powers given more prominence than they did during the series while also toning down on influences from Dynasty Warriors, Samurai Warriors and Final Fantasy. I also used Mega Mode outside of a Megazord setting (instead of it being a combination of power-ups) and featured Megazord finishers on human-sized opponents with the Mega Blade. Because the events of the director’s cut version are different to the original episodes, I consider them to be non-canon.
The road of the Xtreme Legend
Before Gokaiger and Decade premiered, a set of prelude stories were made for Series 10 and 11 in 2017; to complement the BBC Series 8 and 9 having 12 episodes each, I write a total of four episodes – one to replace Deep Breath (titled The Advent of the Doctor), two extra original episodes (one for each series) and an original Christmas Special (titled Dawn of the Space Pirates).
After Girl Power’s defeat, everyone began focusing on their high school studies. By 2016, the first wave of UNIT’s Superhero Project teams were launched; alongside the new Shinkengers led by Akari that replaced the beta testing team, the Gekirangers, Go-Ongers, Goseigers and Zyuohgers were formed as well. The five teams got into a conflict with the Doctor, Hiroki and his assistant while they were investigating a conspiracy involving the Clockwork Droids harvesting organs from students who had committed suicide over their studies and a company giving students unfair advantages in their studies (through cheating).
The year after everyone graduated high school (2017), Hiroki, Akari and Narutaki discover the return of Kawakara, the lost city of Akari’s grandfather, Antoni. Later that year, Narutaki went missing after she and Hiroki were freed from the possession of Evil Death (the Grim Reaper, not to be mistaken for Good Death based on the character played by Simon Farnaby in Horrible Histories) and her role as ShinkenBlue was replaced by another member of Girl Power. Around the same time, Takumi Kamijō and his team at Torchwood Pleiades became the Magirangers after testing a prototype system during the Superhero Project’s beta testing phase.
That Christmas, Hiroki encountered a demon named Suira, also named Sui after the demon in Chinese folklore that explained the origin of money in red pockets. Suira transformed Hiroki into Gyūki after having done so 17 years earlier in an effort to help him get revenge on his parents after being sent to time out. Meanwhile, the Doctor began gathering up the Gokaigers in response to the Zangyack Armada’s vanguard fleet attacking cities. They fought Shikabanen before they help the other Rangers fight Suira, who had transformed into a demonic orge named Dokkaebi (based in Korean folklore) and later combined with Gyūki and Nian (the Chinese New Year Monster) to become the Krlunk Smasher. Although the Rangers defeat the Krlunk Smasher, he grows giant and the Gokaigers form the Legendary Megazord to defeat it.
From the Doctor’s point of view, the 2017 Christmas Special and the events of Gokaiger take place between Series 11 and 12 – after Hell Bent but before The Husbands of River Song and the episodes featuring Nardole, which are collectively known as the Nardole Saga.
A look at the first wave teams
So in summary, the first wave of Superhero Project teams shown in the preludes to Gokaiger and Decade are the Magirangers, Gekirangers, Go-Ongers, Shinkengers, Goseigers, Gokaigers and Zyuohgers. For the most part, the names of their arsenal are derived from their original Super Sentai series, but there are a couple of exceptions; the Shinkengers’ arsenal uses the names from Power Rangers Samurai (as stated earlier) while the Gokaigers’ Zords and Megazord combinations uses names derived from Power Rangers Super Megaforce.
Very few teams had Megazords in Gokaiger due to time constraints; in fact, the only teams that have Megazords featured (aside from the Gokaigers) are those that have a button on their morphers to summon or combine their Zords. Out of the teams in the first wave, the Zyuohgers are in this category, though Cyber Knight and the Gosei Ground Megazord would appear mid-way into Gokaiger.
Speaking of the Shinkengers, what happened to the beta testers for the Superhero Project? Hiroki would go on to become Kamen Rider Decade; Hiroki’s assistant would retain his equipment and become ShinkenGold; the Doctor and Angelina would become part of the Gokaigers; and Momoka and Satoyuki would resign. The ShodoPhones were handed back to UNIT and four of the new Shinkengers received the Samuraizers (from Samurai) as their morphers; Akari retained her ShodoPhone when she became the official ShinkenRed.
Power-ups for the Shinkengers and Goseigers were also introduced; the Black Box and Shark Disc were introduced in Series 9, while the Super Goseigers were introduced in the 2017 Christmas Special.
And that’s all I’m going to tease for the third run of Kisekae Insights. As I stated in the last instalment, this is going to be final instalment of the second run as I want to focus on other things, including the Doctor Who Series 13 reviews and finishing off my personal project. I don’t know when I’ll begin work on the third run, but right now, I’m currently dreading the time until then because of various things, particularly in regards to current affairs.
Kisekae Insights will return, but be warned that things might not be the same. I leave you with my take on an English version of the Shinkenger opening song that I wrote in 2018 after being inspired by Psychic Lover’s take on it. For the most part it’s the same, but I modified the lyrics to fit with the tone of the Shinkenger arc in Series 9.
That’s it again from me. Don’t forget to follow me on Facebook and Tumblr to see more of my posts.
Samurai Sentai Shinkenger English Lyrics (modified by me)
Original lyrics here
Dance! Dance! Get up! Fight together! Chop! Chop! Take down Girl Power! Samurai Sentai Shinkenger Forever! Year upon year it goes This Time War never ends Humans, Time Lords and Daleks are fighting again So we are serious And we are dangerous When we see your weaknesses Your future is over! Let the words light up the sky The elements make us strong! These heroes are makin’ noise They’re fighting for us all! Swords clash, gunshots blazing loud Go Go Samurai Power Rangers! Just do it! Fight for time and for our universe! Don’t! Don’t give up! Don't be afraid We say ‘Banzai’ in the end When Rangers get together, it’s Samurai forever! That’s ‘Bushido’ Hey bring it on! Samurai Sentai Shinkenger Forever! What are we fighting for? Harmony or discord? We indeed fight for peace To understand your drive When we get serious Regrets are part of us We practice so we can fight with no more regrets! Let the words light up the sky The elements make us strong! These heroes are makin’ noise They’re fighting for us all! Flowers blossom, moon sun storm Go Go Samurai Power Rangers! Just do it! Fight for those who really believe in you! Fighting, dancing, shining, dreaming For our future, don’t be afraid! When we combine our powers We will not be beaten! That's 'Bushido' Cut with the sword! Samurai Sentai Shinkenger We are dreaming of the day when the world will be at peace If you don’t wanna understand, then we will take you down! Dance! Dance! Get up! Fight together! Chop! Chop! Take down Girl Power! Our love and courage is what powers our swords! Dance! Dance! Go Go Samurai! Chop! Chop! Go Go Power Rangers! Altogether we will break the darkness of the world That's 'Bushido' Hey bring it on! Samurai Sentai Shinkenger Forever!

my unprompted opinions on sentai swords. Boukenger - Goseiger
Boukenger
Survi-Blades
Tumblr media
uhhhhhh. its ugly! it fits the aesthetic of boukenger but its fucking ugly. next
Great Sword Man Zuban / Holy Sword Zuban
Tumblr media
this guy. i love it. its an extremely ornate sword and its big as hell and looks cool when they swing it. nothing really to say its a big gold sword that happens to turn into a big gold guy.
Gekiranger
no the saiblade is not a sword. if you think im a hypocrite for counting the silver blazer but not the saiblade well thats tough.
GekiRed’s GekiSabers
Tumblr media
these fuckkkkkkkkkkkkkkk. very simply design but still incorporating a shark motif and if theres one season im ok with simple weapon designs its def gekiranger. also twin swords like this are always cool.
Go-Onger
Go-On Red’s Road Saber
Tumblr media
its really hard to get good pics of some of this shit you know. im not redownloading episodes just for this. anywayyyyyyy the road saber is fucking cool. red racer wishes he had this motherfucker. its big as shit and the theme is crystal clear and it just fits so well. good stuff
Shinkenger
i assume you’ve been waiting for this
Secret Playback Katana Shinkenmaru
Tumblr media
bestttttttt. sleek yet unmistakably toku, totally recognizable as a katana yet so much more involved in the design to set it apart as an iconic toku blade. LOVED that they were holstered on their belts and i loved the guards being their hiden disks. this sword was so cool. the sfx for it were awesome too.
Shinken Red’s Two-Mode Transforming Rekka Daizantou
Tumblr media
kaenken rekka fucking who? fuck em. this is THE sword. the biggest bitch ever. the motherfucker supreme. lesser men weep at the sight of this absolute monster. i dont even know what to say. its just. look at it. my god. they were insane to make this thing.
Shinken Red’s Kyoryumaru
Tumblr media
this thing was a bit stupid. i dont hate it it was just stupid as shit. not really a match for the rest of the weapon aesthetics honestly. why was it a fucking dinosaur. next
Shinken Gold’s Laceration Calculating Sword Sakanamaru
Tumblr media
cant get a good pic of this guy either. anyway i love it. the quick draw technique genta used was fucking cool as shit and it looks like a fish. thats cool. all i really have to say on it though. and yes this is a sword not a dagger its just a short sword.
Goseiger
Gosei Tensword / Super Tensword
Tumblr media
ok i havent seen goseiger but im going to extend a branch here and trust that the goseigers did actuallty use this stupid thing like a sword at some point. i didnt even know this was considered a sword until right now i thought it was like those rotary phone staffs in magiranger. it looks dumb but i dont hate it entirely. unless they didnt use it like a sword then fuck them for making me look foolish.
Gosei Red’s Skick Sword
Tumblr media
i like it actually. its plain but at this point i consider that to be an old school throwback design so it lands better i guess. idk. ive always had a soft spot for the gosei weapons for some reason.
Gosei Knight’s Leon Laser
Tumblr media
remember when i said you can tell they cared more about the gun mode on the aba lasers cuz it wasnt named the aba saber or something. same deal. the leon laser looks sick as all hell in gun mode but this is...ehhh. red blade is cool i guess.
