i still just cannot get over beyond birthday as a character because everything id ever seen in fanon before reading LABB indicated that he was some kind of dark spectre haunting L's past and then i read LABB and not only is he just a weird crawler freaking it crab style on the floor, L does not even interact with him one single time. he just makes naomi deal with it. like sorry can you fucking imagine being BB and spending your entire life obsessing the fuck over the guy you see as the bane of your existence and your eternal rival forever and you try doing murders so you can finally defeat him and he fucking delegates you. and then he goes and becomes eternal rivals forever with a gay high schooler

its been itching my brain for a while so if you could please give me something to chew on—do you have any headcanon's for A, like what he (she?) might've behaved like or looked like? I'm really just asking for a nice sandwich and I love the ones you've made (Alphard) and would appreciate another
That time @therealvinelle and I made a character out of fucking nothing.
I assume you mean A from the Death Note universe? Sorry, I've got nothing for you.
The thing about what @therealvinelle and I did with Alphard, and why it worked, was the single solitary detail we did get, along with a few others, paints an incredibly detailed picture to work with.
I only have about five things on hand, but good god, do I get to see that man's entire fucking life.
We just don't have the same for A.
What We Know About A
A is introduced in Death Note: LABB, for those super Death Note nerds who read the novel like I did. There's no mention of either A or B in the manga or in the anime.
A and B were the first gen successors to L, before Mello and Near, and the premise of the novel is that "wow, that successor program was a really shitty idea even before it was a shitty idea!" in that of the two a) A couldn't handle the pressure and killed themselves b) B couldn't handle the pressure and turned himself into a physical clone of L, then sought to make a case so complicated L couldn't solve it, culminating with lighting himself on fire. The great irony being L had so little interest in dealing with it himself, he makes Naomi Misora do all the work/all the talking to 'Ryuzaki' without supplying any pertinent information or saying anything more than "uh huh, wow, such detective, such good, Misora" and only at the end admitting, "yeah, that wasn't me, that was my rampaging successor, but good job catching him."
A is years dead before the novel begins, and gets a one-off mention by our totally unbiased narrator Mello, totally, as being B's rival for the position of successor who at some point before it could be decided killed himself.
But let's try to bullet point it.
A Was Chosen: Nationality
First, we know A is at Wammy's.
We don't know exactly how Watari/Roger recruits for Wammy's, how you are selected to enter the 'successor' program, or even the scope of just where they draw successors from.
(I don't have vol 13 on hand at the moment, but I believe it only went into the ethnicity breakdown for L, not even nationality, and it's...
When asked about L's ethnicity, creator of the series Tsugumi Ohba responded, "I think of him as a quarter Japanese, a quarter English, a quarter Russian, a quarter French or Italian, like that." Ohba said that L is the most intelligent character in the entire Death Note series because "the plot requires it." He added that he personally views L as "slightly evil." - from the wiki
Rock on Ohba, rock on with your.... "quarter Russian, Japanese, French/Italian, English".
I also love "slightly evil" from a man who has multiple "torture X character" arcs.)
Given we only see four characters who went through some variation of this program in the manga/anime (L, Near, Mello, and if we even count him Matt), it's really hard to judge. We know Beyond Birthday, by the time he meets Naomi, looks similar enough to L that the entire premise of the book is "oh wow, that's totally L and Naomi doesn't know, oh wow he's doing all the things you--TOTAL SHOCK IT WASN'T L AT ALL"
But if we have to choose, and we have to do this in a way that fucking makes sense given how borders work and that "no, Roger, you can't just take random orphans from any country you like and stick them in your Batman orphanage" then A is either from Britain, maybe Ireland, or if we're really stretching things maybe Western Europe.
Other places are possible, and they could bullshit their way in getting A to England, but there's also the fact that A is chosen for this program. It's unclear just how much searching Wammy's does for talented orphans who will fit the role of L (having the level of intelligence Watari and co. are looking for, the drive and desire, and being the world's most super genius to recreate the success of L).
Now, the manga/anime implies that they had very high standards. L is the greatest detective in the world, Near as his number one successor to is eventually able to defeat Light and is an extreme deductive genius.
If you want to play that game, you can't just use the orphans that happened to be in your orphanage to start with. You have to look for them and either a) wander around orphanages/newly orphaned children and test them for their suitability b) pick up orphans that they've heard of who have nationally/internationally been so impressive they meet the criteria.
Now the thing about b is that doesn't happen often (and probably not at the impressionable ages that Wammy's needs to both a) give the orphan the training b) convince a near adult "YOU SHOULD TOTALLY BECOME BATMAN WOULDN'T THAT BE SUPER COOL?!")
...
To sum this up, A is probably from Britain, maybe Ireland.
A Was Chosen: Age
Alright, A was selected, as gone in above from what we see of Mello, Near, and Matt, they got roped into this when they were very young. They're very young appearing AFTER the six-year time skip when they've been doing this long enough that a) this is their major goal in life and the only thing they can think of b) they have an intense and bitter rivalry c) Matt has already been weeded out. L, too, we have a brief image of him as a six-year-old or so (possibly metaphorical), implying he and Watari have been doing this for... a while, and that L was set on this path very early in life.
Both A and B were very likely young children when they started this program in earnest. Personally, if I had to write a fic... I'd say ten at most.
Now, this doesn't tell us much about when A dies, but we know that B is an adult man by LABB, Naomi never remarks upon him looking like a teenager. We also know he's able to impersonate L, and more (and this is important), the L we see in canon.
The entire L gimmick of the book is that we, the readers, are given the impression this is L (except for the weird eyes, that's weird). It's important that this isn't necessarily L at the time, but what we the readers would recognize him as years later during the Kira case. We, in canon, see L in his mid 20's. This means that B in the novel was at least passing as in his mid 20's. Could be he's younger, could be he's older, but what it does mean that A, if at a similar age only either reached a) very young adulthood b) teens.
Personally, given the pressure, the suicide, and the fact that the rivalry had been bitterly ongoing at that point, I'd say A was likely a mid/late teenager when they killed themselves.
A Was Chosen: Intelligence
A must have been good enough at whatever tests Wammy's did to gauge whether they had an initial aptitude for becoming an L candidate.
Now, we've seen the types of things Near is good at and that are heavily implied put him above Mello. Near is very good at intelligence tests, puzzles, and so on.
It's not unlikely that A was tested with very similar things and that A must have reached some threshold to be considered a promising candidate in the first place.
A Was Chosen: AMAB
Now, this one's more headcanon, but I go into this here. I think, either through overt or unintended bias, Watari/Roger would gravitate towards selecting AMAB individuals as opposed to AFAB.
I don't think A would be an exception.
Also, Viz translated the gender into English as "he", so take that as you will.
The Eternal Prince/Eternal Rivalry
Now, the trouble with A and B, being so early in, is that L was a very young man at the time and either not much older than they were or even younger.
L had already by this point reached international acclaim as the detective L, continued to gather for himself detective personas surrendered by rivals, and was showing no signs of stopping or slowing down.
So, how exactly are A and B supposed to become L? Either they somehow prove they're better than him, when he has the benefit of a) experience in the field b) connections with law enforcement and a working relationship with Watari c) all the resources in the world or L miraculously dies.
Not to mention we know, canonically, that L is vicious and would tolerate no competition for his title.
Mello notes this himself (though is a... biased... narrator) that the first gen were throwaways, they were the trial training run for the REAL successors, Mello and Near.
Regardless of what Mello thinks, the fact remains that A and B were both aware that to be L themselves, L had to go, which showed no signs of happening.
Not to mention they're still infighting with each other, quite viciously, so that they can at least be next in line.
Not only is this a tremendous amount of pressure, but it's utterly pointless pressure.
B was the type of person to react to this with a "FUCK YOU DAD", in that he tried to make a case L couldn't solve to finally prove he was superior to all of them.
A, for this or perhaps other reasons, killed themselves. We don't know if this was the sole reason, but it would certainly be a large factor.
TL;DR
A was likely born or at least orphaned in Britain, A was young when chosen and young when they died, A was likely good at logic puzzles/intelligence exams at a young age, A was highly likely to be AMAB, and was in a doomed competition where their entire self-worth/point of their existence hinged on a pointless struggle that neither they nor B could ever conceivably live.
But considering, that's really not much/what you were asking for.

Shuichi Aizawa taps his foot against the floor to listen to the sound.
Solid. Concrete, stained with crumbs. This airport must not have many cleaners.
"I'm back!" Matsuda flops down beside him, grinning. Shuichi is absurdly jealous that he doesn't seem affected by the jet-lag at all. "I got snacks for the flight. Want some cookies?"
"Sure," Shuichi says, a little surprised by the thoughtfulness, and takes one.
"I mean, I guess they're biscuits here," Matsuda says. "Never thought we'd come to England for the K— I mean, the investigation."
"You don't have to sound so excited about it."
"Oh, come on, like you didn't like it!" Matsuda leans his head back against the pillar and sighs. "I can't believe we're going back already. I wish we got to stay for longer than a day."
"We got what we needed," Shuichi says flatly. He has Near and Mello's pencil sketches carefully stored in multiple layers of folders in his backpack. (He also has a few Sherlock keychains stuffed in his pocket. Yumi and Taro love those books, and god knows Shuichi hasn't been the best father.) "We shouldn't stay apart from the rest of the task force for too long."
"Yeah, I guess." Matsuda sighs again. "Still. It was nice doing something for once, wasn't it?"
Shuichi nods, reluctantly. The circumstances are horrific, of course, but he can't deny he's been going a little mad sitting in an office for five years while Ukita's killer — and Ryuzaki's, and Watari's — keeps slipping through the task force's fingers like sand through a sieve.
"Light's going to be happy," Matsuda continues, his smile returning. "We've learned a lot."
N, Near, Mello, Wammy's House, the L Successor Program. "Yeah," Shuichi says.
He's been a little worried about the younger Yagami, frankly. They don't talk at all outside of the office, and Light always seems perfectly fine, but it can’t be easy watching your sister be kidnapped and your father coerced. If Kira or the mafia ever came for Shuichi’s family, he doesn’t know what he’d do.
Ever since Ukita, Shuichi has promised himself that when they catch Kira, Shuichi’s going to get him a lawful trial and imprisonment. Hopefully for life. He refuses to stoop as low as to kill him; he’s better than that. The NPA must be better than that.
But if they hurt his kids—
No, it’s not worth thinking about.
Matsuda, abruptly and inexplicably, giggles.
“What,” Shuichi says, cringing a little at how sharp his voice is.
“Nothing!” Matsuda winces. “It’s just… it’s a little funny.”
“What’s funny?”
“We got Near and Mello’s pictures, right?” Matsuda gestures in the direction of Shuichi’s backpack. “And we’re trying to find their real names.”
“What’s your point?”
“Don’t you think it’s kind of like we’re Kira?”
…Huh.
“That’s not funny,” Shuichi says, but he can’t bring himself to put any bite into it.
Matsuda droops a little. “I know.”
Shuichi glances over at him. Matsuda is working his thumb into the side of his wrist, frowning. It’s a nervous habit Shuichi’s seen a million times before.
Still, for some reason he does feel a bit of… camaraderie.
Shuichi knocks his shoulder into Matsuda’s, and when he startles, says: “Hey.”
“Yeah?” Matsuda answers, slightly timid.
“Thanks for the biscuit.”
And Matsuda’s eyes brighten, so maybe it’s worth it.

Chapter 7 ( L X Reader)
ANALYZER
WC: 1061
MASTERLIST
-Chapter 6
A/N: AHHHH IM SO SORRY FOR TAKING FOREVER TO UPDATE!!!! I HAD SO MUCH GOING ON IN MY LIFE, TO HAVING WRITTERS BLOCK FOR THIS STORY TO HAVING TO WATCH DEATH NOTE A BILLION TIMES AGAIN TO GET NEW IDEAS! FORGIVE ME! i hope y'all enjoy and let me know what you guys think about this chapter!!!!
Tumblr media
Though L had told me he was going to make more time in which we would be able to meet and just get to know one another, but given the situation that we are in, time isn’t in our favor. I’ve been watching the 24/7 surveillance footage we have on yotsoba meetings. I have grown tired of hearing plan after plan, after plan.  The Only real interaction or meet was when we would go eat.
“Mmm i think i like the creme brulee cheesecake over your black forest cake.” I mumble as i take another bite of my slice of cake. L on the other hand is just taking chunks out of every slice in front of him.
“ I just enjoy the taste of sugar.” L mumbles with his mouth full.
“ The point of trying cakes is to taste the flavors.”
“ I like sugar.”
“ you said that already.”
“ Then let us discuss something you haven’t heard before Y/N/N. Tell me, how do you think Kira kills? given how much you’ve watched these recordings, i trust that you would be able to come up with a conclusion.`` L leads the conversation.
“ Ryuzaki we said nothing about the case.”
“My apologies, I can’t help but think about anything else.” L rubs his pointer and thumb together as he rolls around the sugar sprinkles, before sucking the sugar off his fingers.
“ Fine, during the meetings theres a lot of numbers, days and ways on how one might be killed or die. There can be a few options all of which cannot be described without some type of supernatural power. One being they, Kira, speaks it into existence.. But that would require some type of God who can do such things. The Other thing is writing it down. Now this one more specifically is what caught my attention. During all the meetings, everyone had a notebook and a pen in front of them but none were used. Except for one, Higuchi . He fiddles with a pen often, and his pen is the only one that’s different from the rest. Indicating it's personal, and this item alone holds some time of significant use to him. Fiddling with the pen can express confidence or the depiction of some type of power.. But again, if he is writing it down, then how do the deaths occur? Unless something of supernatural power is in charge.” I explain before picking up a cheesecake slice and taking a small cut from the end of the slice.
“ Are you saying something of a shinigami? I have to say I’ll be disappointed, as they are nothing but some folklore.”  L sighs before staring up at me with his gray orbs.
“ Folklore might sound crazy, but the human brain is not capable of creating or making up things, unless it was seen before. As a result I would not knock the idea, and based on how both Light and Misa reacted when they were confined was like they were no longer under some trance, dare I say even under a control of a spirit or being. Their body language in itself changed drastically, more so with light based on the footage. During his confinement I was able to see small lip movements that read “ Get rid of it.” It was moments after that when his body language changed from annoyance.. To confusion. Light’s body language is never abrupt, always calm..Light likes to articulate his movements and his responses to things. So that quick change in demeanor is what concerns me..”
“And you think that the new Kira is now Higuchi.” L states with a firmness to his voice.
“ If I have to put my bet, I’d say it was him and Namikawa is the one who calls the shots before Higuchi does anything.”
“ I see.. But there were two kiras at one point.. Do you think that the second kira could be Namikawa Y/N/N?”
“I believe that at this very moment there’s only one Kira, which makes my theory of writing in something like a book stronger. When Light said “ get rid of it” what does “ it” refer to if not an object . As a result, if we are talking about let’s say some book, then at this very moment the second book hasn’t been possessed or hasn't possessed a person yet.. If Namikawa were the second kira, I don't believe he would be giving Higuchi some type of approval/ or direction of what to do, he would just do it himself.”
“ I agree, I just don’t see how believing in some type of power in an object or being is gonna help us solve the case. If the way of killing can be transmitted between person to person, whether it be through a book or by some type of spiritual possession, the catching of Kira would be impossible.” L argues back with reason as expected.
“ Well it all depends, if we are looking for an object, then maybe the destruction of the object can end the killings. But if it is some type of possession of spirit that jumps from person to person. Then the goal is to look for the type of person the spirit is drawn to. But of course that would be a stretch and as you said, would probably be impossible to solve. But given that at one point Light was Kira, I find it hard to believe that someone who murdered so many people would have no recollection of any of it. Making it be that the person has control on if they can erase their memory and bring it back when needed. Which makes me think that Light could still be Kira without even knowing it anymore.."
“ Y/N/N, I have to say your reasoning on things goes beyond my reasoning. I only deal with the facts and the logical explanation of things. If it cannot be proven then it cannot be used as a fact to support evidence.  But you use evidence to create a fact, to make a logical explanation, which is interesting. But it might all be interesting to me, simply for the fact that I cannot believe in some type of supernatural power. But I will leave that to you.” L speaks in a monotone voice, not sounding too fond of my reasoning.
“ I like the bigger picture, not the small details Ryuzaki.”
With a side glance L looks at me but returns to his cake, lifting his feet onto the chair and sitting in his weird position and finishes his cake, with not another word to me. His energy shifted from that of being open to that of being closed off. Was it my tone? No. It was that I’m challenging his logical way of thinking with a more elaborate explanation of what could be and not what is.

It's way more fun to leave it to the mystery of the wind....
...but, to my ears, I always thought it was obvious that Ryuzaki's aggressive-top attitude was a parody-dig at L.
"You know, I am childish and I hate to lose."
"I have never once been submissive, not even to a traffic signal."
It just makes sense coming out of L's mouth.
Although.... *dipshit thinking-face*
Tumblr media
youtube
Someone else brought up the point that maybe L copied Ryuzaki's copy of him, for the Kira case..... specifically just to freak Kira out, try to throw him off balance.
He had heard how well it had worked for Ryuzaki.
My other supposition: Everything that Ryuzaki did was supposed to be a dig at L, including rifling through a murder-victim's panty-drawer in plain view of another detective.
Look, you would think that if B had wanted to do that.... that he would have made time specifically for when he wouldn't have company. But he knew Naomi was coming. She says this, she detected it in her gut, before her mind had processed it.
It's also fun to be the bad guy.
I often think about the movie Se7en, where the lead detectives are interrogating the serial-killer they've caught.
youtube
He says he was inspired by God.
One detective asks: "If you feel that you were ordered to do this, then why did you seem to get so much enjoyment out of it?"
[.........]
"Nothing wrong with a man taking pleasure in his work"
I have a strong distaste for fandom... I like the privacy that a book holds.
For me, this has really been like a litmus-test for tumblrites' intelligence, at least for as much as I should take random people's opinions seriously.
If you can't even solve a problem where there is a definite right or wrong answer, where there is INTENT, there is a question posed.... then how could I expect anything of you?
I'm not trying to insult, but I'm putting my thought-process out on paper.
A dangerous thing.... is that?
Is it so dangerous to know what's running through another man's head?
Another funny thing, back to Ryuzaki: is how there are two components.
One, he put the plan out on paper. He marked it down, he planned it.
Two, he did it.
IT'S LIKE SURFING, MY DEAR WATSON!
lol...
because there are all these currents underneath your feet, and you have to know how to move over them, in order to achieve a goal.
So imagine for yourself, putting a plan on paper........ then, how you would realize it into the world.
(L's other succeeding heirs each embodied these two functions of his personality: the cold, methodical, calculating one who sits like a spider; the one who picks up all the pieces and organizes them, one at a time.
The other is the actor, the instigator, the one who grabs life by the balls and pulls.)
Catch the wave, my dear Watson!
I'd do it because it would amuse me. It isn't particularly my natural behaviour, but what is natural anyways?
Everything is trying to achieve form all of the time. The ether is full of unrealized potentials.
Did you know that the I Ching's hexagrams -- alternating yin and yang lines -- are the inspiration for the binary math that is used in computers today?
0's and 1's
Assigning an alphabet to ordered combinations of these: 01101100 01100101 01110100 01110100 01100101 01110010 01110011.
Tumblr media
Let's look at an episode of south park for inspiration:
The time where the guys TP someone's house.
youtube
This little soundbite video, embedded up above, is a lot funnier in the full context of what's going on in the world. I linked to the episode so you can watch it.
Just make sure your antivirus is active. Wear a condom, man.
Why I bring this up?: When I first saw this, I wasn't aware that this was inspired by another movie. I thought it was hilarious in its own right.
Something about that...
You know.... if we're going to play tit-for-tat, I think that Misora got off pretty light, as far as the Ryuzaki treatment goes.
I mean, that L is so weird that he chose to handcuff himself to another person, spent every second of every day and night together with him... even as far as showering.
Tumblr media
Put THAT in your pipe and smoke it!

Hey Pretty Stranger
Prompt- Sitting on the train you noticed a someone so beautiful they could be an angel. So you drew them.
Pairing- L x Reader
Fandom- Death Note
Sitting on the train you watch the world flashing by. Warm sunlight streamed through the windows casting your surroundings in a gold glow. Swinging your legs idlily you looked at the people sitting opposite you.
An older woman and a boy around your age. The woman didn't interesting you but something about the boy captivated you. He was sitting in a strange position all curled up. Thick black hair framed his pale face. He was wearing a plain white shirt and long blue jeans. Headphones dangles from his ear and you wondered what he was listening to. He seemed to be asleep.
You stared at him, trying to memorize the details in his face. He was one of the most beautiful people you had ever seen though he wasn't particularly conventionally attractive. An idea them popped into your head. 'Why don't I draw him,' you loved drawing pretty things and he certainly was pretty.
Quietly taking out your sketchbook and pencil from your bag you started to draw him. You became so concentrated on your work you failed to noticed that the mystery boy had opened his eyes slightly and was watching you intently. Looking up to put the final details on your drawing you noticed his dark eyes staring at you.
They were the color of night but also the color of storms and seemed to hold a myriad of secrets. Embarrassed, you nervously smiled at him. You had been found out but he didn't seem to mind. So unsteadily getting up from your seat you went over to him.
"Hi," you said "I was drawing you. I'm sorry I should have gotten your permission but you just looked so interesting I couldn't resist."
"It's fine." his voice was deep and strong but vulnerable at the same time. "Do you mind if I see your work?"
"S-sure," you stuttered holding out your sketch book.
He took it gently and proceeded to inspect the drawing. He took some time looking over it that you were worried you had offended him. But he handed it back with a soft smile.
"It's great your very talented."
"You think so," you beamed. He nodded his head.
"Well if you like it so much you could keep it."
"Really?" he sounded surprised.
"Sure-" reaching for your pen "-let me write your name on it"
Looking at him expectantly you waited for his name. He seemed to turn the question over as if he didn't quite know but he finally said,
"My name is Ryuzaki."
Scribbling his name on the page you ripped it out of you sketchbook. As you handed it to him the train started slowing.
"Oh that's my stop, see you Ryuzaki."
With that you took you bags and left with him staring quizzically after you. What did you mean 'see you' but as he looked down at the drawing he realized you hadn't just written his name. Below it you had written a phone number and the message,
'Hey pretty stranger. I think you look cute. Here's my number. I wanna know you.'

*LOADING*
Your date is...
Rue Ryuzaki (L)!
Let's pretend he has a little time during his busy schedule to go out.
Expect a lot of food, more than food, sweets.
Also expect a lot of questions but not answers from him.
He means no harm, is his nature to be curious and ask questions. He'll be asking you what you like, what are your personal interests, etc. He just wants to know everything about you.
Of course, sweets aren't the only thing he likes, L will talk about books and in general personal interests he has without giving you any personal information. The date will be more dedicated to get to know you. (or if you know anything about kira)
Where does he take you? A bakery, somewhere you two can be alone and in peace while eating, he will probably tell you to try some kinds of cake if you haven't.
Did he bring you anything? After the date he ask you which one's you liked and so he gave them to you. Your fridge is stuck with sweets you will never finish.
Is there going to be a first kiss? Honey, don't expect any kind of physical contact from his side. If you want to hold his hand or even kiss him, you will have to initiated, he will ask you what are you doing but i don't think he will mind at all.
During the date you both were really comfortable on how this was going.
He even compliment your outfit.

Hi there! I can to request a one shot where the reader is jealous because BB has been looking at someone too much or something like that. Please and thank you!
Yes, of course dear~ I love writing B ♥
.
.
TITLE: SIGHT
pairing: Beyond Birthday x jealous!gn!reader
|| warning: major spoilers of the novel "The Los Angeles BB murder cases" / jealousy / slightly yandere behaviour / a not very healthy relationship ||
Tumblr media
When B left the Wammy's House on May 2002 for the States he felt a bit out of place: he was alone in a foreign and far country. Luckily that feeling lasted less than five minutes once at the Los Angeles airport. He had only one goal in mind: to surpass L, the greatest detective in the world, as the "World's Greatest Criminal," giving him a case that B hoped he would be unable to solve.
June just started few days ago when B's life changed in a way he would never imagined. He was in a beauty store, he needed to buy a new foundation and few eye pencils in order to maintain his heavy mask of L's lookalike. B was waiting for his turn at the cash register and he was the only boy there.
All the girls (and women) were secretly looking at him trying to understand if those products were for him or for a female partner or relative. And maybe the oldest ones were mentally insulting him because "boys should not wear makeup". As if B read those thoughts he turned his head towards those women to glare at them: his dull black eyes always made people look away in fear. A voice, however, distracted him.
«Sir? It's your turn»
B looked in front of him once again and noticed the cashier was right so he walked closer to them, scattering the products on the conveyor belt. The cashier, someone with H/C hair and S/C skin, smiled kindly at him while doing whatever a cashier did, B didn’t care and looked away just to read people's names above their heads.
«Sir? If you're interested, we have a lighter shade of this foundation»
At those words B turned to look at the cashier one more time. Since L was really pale, lighter was better.
«Really? I saw nothing at the display cabinet» B replied with a raised eyebrow but the cashier couldn’t see it since his face was partially hidden by a cap.
«It's because we hadn’t the time to organise it but it is available. Do you want to see it?»
«Yes»
The E/C coloured cashier nodded at him and whispered something to a girl next to them. In few instants that girl opened the register next to them so the other clients could pay for their shopping there.
In the meantime, B thought about his plan: everything was perfectly set (the crime scene, the Wara Ningyo, the victim's name and his cover), nothing will go wrong. He smirked at the perfection of his project, he couldn’t be more satisfied.
«There it is, sir. Do you want to try it?» the cashier came back, in their hands a tiny bottle of foundation way lighter than the one B chose before. The once L's successor nodded and extended his right hand so the cashier could apply a small quantity of foundation on it, with circular motions.
«The ideal is to test the product on the side of your jaw but I believe this shade suits you well, sir. It's almost invisible on your hand»
B, however, wasn’t focused on the foundation in that moment. When the cashier's fingers touched his hand he felt a strange sensation. It was like…flames, as if he touched the fire with bare hands. He wanted…to feel it…once again…
«You're right, I think I'll take this» B masked his emotions with a fake smile and the cashier nodded at his reply. While they were busy with his products, B's eyes couldn’t look away from his right hand. The foundation was still there and he caressed it with the thumb. Something about that simple gesture upset him…in a positive way, maybe?
«It's $22.13, sir»
Without saying another word, B payed for his shopping and left the beauty shop. Before leading back home, he glanced inside the shop. He could read above the cashier's head two words: Y/N L/N. And then a date.
"Your death is so far from now, Y/N…you're lucky".
.
.
.
It was August 2002 and Believe Bridesmaid was already dead. B was rather satisfied about his job, nobody interrupted him during the murderer. Not even when he re-dressed the victim after the post-mortem mutilation.
Something, however, didn’t go as he planned. This "something" was Y/N. A part of B's brain yelled things like "Don’t distract yourself!" or "Focus on L not them"; but the other half pushed him to know Y/N more. He went in that beauty shop as much as he could even though he didn’t buy anything.
Despite his unique personality, B and Y/N started to get along. Poor Y/N ignored the fact that more than once B followed them home and he even spied on them different times.
«Ryuzaki! Did you hear?» an afraid Y/N appeared from the service entrance of their beauty shop. It was a sort of habit for B (or Ryuzaki as he introduced to Y/N) to join them after work.
«Hear what, Y/N?» he asked while putting his hands in the pockets of his faded jeans. Even though he always walked hunched over he was still taller than Y/N.
«A famous writer died!» they put the shop's keys in their bag and started to walk back home with Ryuzaki beside them.
«Yes, I heard that. It happened few weeks ago, right?»
Y/N nodded, they seemed quite shocked. «I read all his books, I can't believe someone killed him»
«Yeah…Los Angeles is becoming a dangerous place»
.
.
.
August 4th was close and B had to kill again. He managed to realise all the riddles and the three Wara Ningyo he had to leave on the scene. However, something was missing: the victim itself. He decided he would take advantage of a walk he wanted to take with Y/N. They needed a break from work and B suggested to spend some time at the park.
Once surrounded by peace and trees, however, Y/N noticed something strange on Ryuzaki. Something that made them…boil with jealousy.
Since the moment they met Ryuzaki at the beauty shop, Y/N felt something for that strange "un-private" detective. They didn’t care about his peculiar behaviour or particular taste about food: his deep black eyes, the way his thin lips curved in a smile each time he saw them and his intellect…he knew so many things, Y/N wondered where he studied all that.
Ah, poor Y/N. They were completely unaware of Ryuzaki's real self. They knew the pale, slouched "un-private" detective and not the bloodthirsty and ferocious serial killer.
They admitted they started to feel…attracted by the man. Y/N didn’t know it was simple friendship or…something else.
Back to the park, Y/N noticed a strange attitude of Ryuzaki. Since the two of them started to walk towards the park, the man was staring intensely at all women (and even men) that passed next to them. It looked like he was searching for someone in particular.
«Are you alright Ryuzaki?»
The un-private detective turned towards Y/N and smiled. «Yes Y/N» and then he came back at staring at people as nothing happened…as if Y/N wasn’t there with him.
He looked at people down on with such intensity that Y/N had the feeling he was imagining something in his head. He even smirked from time to time.
«I wish you would look at me in the same way…» Y/N said in a whisper.
«I don’t know what that was about, but I love seeing you all riled up» at that answer Y/N turned towards him. Did he hear them?
Ryuzaki was looking at them with curiosity, a thumb over his lips. The wind messed up his (already ruffled) hair and his weird sitting position - with his knees pulled up against his chest- made him bigger than usual.
Y/N's cheeks turned pink and looked away embarrassed. Geez, Ryuzaki heard them…
They were so focused on their gaffe that they didn’t notice the man moved an arm around their shoulder in a cute attempt to hug them. That gesture took Y/N aback but hugged him back almost immediately, sensing the intoxicating scent of strawberry jam of his clothes.
«I would never reserve that kind of look on you, Y/N. You're far too…» and B paused, trying to find the right word to not to make them suspicious about his behaviour. «…important for me»
Y/N silently sighed in relief and stood trapped in the hug for a while. They were unaware, however, that B found the person he was searching for: Quarter Queen, August 4th 2002. At that sight he grasped with force at Y/N's shoulder…finally, his second victim.
Y/N interpreted that grasp as a gesture of Ryuzaki to remark what he said before, that they were important to him so they didn’t notice the strange, dangerous look on his face.
«Trust me, Y/N…you don't wish to be looked like that by me»

Hello. I was curious as to what pronouns I like, and was wondering if you could try some out for me. Specifically, He/they/it/she. I use the name L, or Ryuzaki.
I am a fictive. I enjoy reading, writing, and drawing. I have 2 dogs. I'm not sure if this information will be helpful.
Thank you.
Oh look! It's L! I love Ryuzaki's names, and he has very cool pronouns as well! I hope they don't mind the wait on getting its check done, but i promise her I did try to get this check done as soon as I could.
He's a fictive! That's very cool of them, I think I recognize its name, I wonder if thats why? I'll ask her the next time I see him!
He enjoys reading! That's something I have in common with them, I wonder if it has a favorite type of book to read? Or maybe she has a favorite genre! I'll ask him whenever I see them next, maybe I can lend it some books for her to read!
He also likes writing! Yet another thing I have in common with them! I wonder what it likes to write about? Oh! Do you think that she has a favorite genre to write? When I see him next, I'll ask them! Maybe it would be willing to share some of her writing with me!
He also likes drawing! That's another thing I have in common with them, wow! I wonder if it does traditional or digital art? Maybe she does a bit of both! Maybe he would show me some of their art? I'm sure its art is amazing, and I hope she knows that!
He has two dogs! That's very cool of them, I wonder what it's dogs are named? Oh! What kinds of dogs does she have? Do his dogs like walks or are they more lazy? Are their dogs smaller or bigger? How old are its dogs? So many questions for her!
Anyway, I hope he has a great day and that they are sure that it takes care of herself.

Here you go, Dear Anon. 🖤
“You’ve been distracted as of late.” L’s eyes looked darker than usual, his hunch more exaggerated. “Is something keeping your attention?”
They laughed airily, a veiled attempt to hide their nerves. “Don’t be ridiculous, Ryuzaki. Everything is fine.”
“Ryuzaki? You always make a point of calling me L when we are not in the company of others. I’m aware that we are unconventional, but I assumed you were happy.” He paused momentarily before the words spilled from his mouth. “Is there someone else?”
He feared the answer, his stomach twisting with anticipation that he had been betrayed.
“What?” Their face dropped into sullen features. “Of course not. Why would you think that?”
“Your sudden change in behavior can be construed as the actions of one being unfaithful.”
Their expression shifted from sorrow to sly. “I would never do that, but since you are you I will let it slide.” They walked to their room, rustling within the walls before they returned, a small box in hand. “I was planning on giving this to you later and since you are so good at finding things, I was worried it would be spoiled before then. So here you go.”
“This is the explanation for your suspicious actions?” He lowered his head and looked up at them softly, taking the box in hand. “Why did you get me something? It isn’t a date of any importance.”
“It’s a just because gift.”
“What is it?” He asked, a tiny smile on his lips.
“Open it and find out.”

Mello stared out the window, eyes fixed on the street in front of his apartment. They had been gone for hours, something that had become a habit over the last month. His scowl grew heavy by the second until their car pulled up to the curb. He watched them scamper happily up the sidewalk, waiting until he heard their keys in the lock before he moved to the living room.
“Where were you?” His voice edged on anger.
They tossed their keys onto the shelf by the door. “Well, hello to you, too.”
Mello repeated his question. “Where were you?”
“I was at work.” They tilted their head in his direction. “What are you getting at?”
“You seem to be at work an awful lot lately.” He glared them down, his blue eyes piercing into them. “Where have you really been?”
“I told you work.” They began to lose patience with his redundancies. “What? Isn’t my word good enough anymore?”
“If you’ve been at work, then where’s all the extra money you should be earning?”
“You know what? This was supposed to be a nice surprise, but since you’re being an ass, here.” They plunged their hand into their coat pocket and extracted two blue pieces of paper.
His eyes fell to their outstretched hand and what it clutched. “Are those tickets to--?”
“Yes.”
“Those cost a fortune.”
“Yup. That’s why I took the extra hours and that’s where the money has gone.” They frowned at him, a hint of annoyance tinging their face. “I also waited in line for 16 and a half hours, too. That’s where I was last night. Not with someone else.”
“How did you know that I thought that?”
“Mells, please. I know you.” Their anger faded as sadness took its place. “I just thought you knew me, too.”

“Hi baby!” Sneaking up behind Near, they wrapped their arms around him and planted a kiss on his alabaster cheek. “Why are you in the interrogation room?”
Near did not return their affections. “I need you to take a seat please.” He motioned to the chair directly across from him on the other side of a desk.
“Ok.” They looked quizzically at him. “Is this for a game?”
“Your behaviors lately have been contradictory to your norm.”
“I suppose so, but-“
“Such behaviors include leaving at varying hours, taking phone calls at odd hours, and having no explanation for your whereabouts.”
“Yes, but you don’t underst-“
“I can only conclude that you are seeking attention outside of our relationship.”
“That is not the case at all.” Tears welled in their eyes. “Can I answer you now?”
Near remained stone-faced. “I did not ask any questions, but I want to hear your rebuttals.”
“If you must ruin the surprise, I have been in contact with an antiques dealer that specializes in toys. I found an original—“
“An original? Like the one I had as a child, before Wammy’s?”
“Yes. I wanted you to have one again.”
“That was very considerate of you.”
“Yes.” They pouted from across the table. “Your interrogation of me  was not.”
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
The floor was riddled with empty cans and chocolate wrappers, chords from various game systems cluttering the walkway. Matt leaned his back into the edge of the couch, legs stretched out toward the console before him. The controller sat idly in his gloved hands, his thumbs not remembering how to mash the buttons.
He watched them as they sat on the couch and read, his eyes gazing through hazy lenses.
It was the first time in weeks that they had been home on a Saturday. Their weekend absences had been accompanied by evenings out, becoming more frequent as the weeks went on. Some nights they didn’t come home at all.
He didn’t want to think the worst, but it was hard for him not to. He never expected mush from the world. People will almost always let you down, but they were an exception to that sentiment, until recently that is.
“Can I ask you something?” His words broke the unusual silence that hung in the living room.
They folded their book in their lap, putting a finger between the pages to mark their place.
“I’m not accusing you of anything, but are you seeing someone else? It’s just you’ve been gone a lot and you’ve been really distant lately and I was wondering.”
Smirk across their lips, they answered through the unintended offense. “Seriously?”
“Look, I know that it isn’t always easy, but it can get better. I will try quitting again, too. I know how much you hate the smoking.”
“That isn’t it. You really don’t get what’s going on here.”
“Ok, that’s fair. Tell me where were you all those weekends and evenings?”
“I was picking up some extra shifts to make some quick cash.”
Without another word, they stood from the couch, noting the page number before leaving the book on the cushion and disappeared into their room. Within a few moments they returned, dropping a video game into Matt’s lap. “Here you go. It’s the one you wanted right?”
“Yeah, but…”
“I felt bad that you didn’t get it back when it came out because you spent your extra money on nicotine patches and the parts to repair my car.” They smiled at him, but it didn’t hold back their sarcasm. “Thanks for thinking I’m a cheater though. That’s an awesome feeling.”
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Like an animal locked in a cage, Beyond paced the floors of his third story apartment. He could have climbed the walls with the way he was feeling. He was never good at handling when his thoughts got the better of him, and right now he was between utter despair and out and out rage.
While rummaging through their dresser, Beyond found the newly issued passport, the roll of cash fasten with an elastic hair tie, and the hand-written schedule on how to leave, detailed right down to the date & times of flight arrangements.
He wanted them to come home. He needed them to come home.
Now.
He no sooner had reached his breaking point when the door opened and they stepped inside.
“You’re late” was the greeting he met them with.
“Oh good. You’re home.” They beamed at him as they tossed their jacket on the coatrack by the door. “I wanted to tell you something.”
“Who is he?”
“What?”
“Who is he?” he snarled, his eye practically glowing with the gift that was forced upon him. “Do not make me ask again.”
“I really don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“Don’t play innocent with me. I know you’re planning to leave me. I found everything. Did you think I wouldn’t find out or were you just going to disappear from my life and hope I wouldn’t think a thing of it?
“Please tell me. What did you find?” They kept their voice soft, but it wasn’t enough to hide the tremble that plagued every word.
“The money. The passport. The itinerary. You know, your escape plan to get away from me.”
“Oh.”
“Oh. Oh? That’s all you can say?”
“It’s not like that at all.” They reached in their pocket and took out two plane tickets and handed them to him.
He snatched them for their shaky grasp and read the type print. “I don’t understand.”
“You always talk about wanting to go there. I thought we could go for our anniversary. I wanted to surprise you.”
Beyond’s face washed in guilt. “I’m sorry. This was incredibly thoughtful of you.” His fears and anger left just as quickly as it had built and was now filled with joy and sadness. He wasn’t sure why he was like this still.
“I just wanted you to get something you wanted. Something good.” They took him into a hug. “I know you’re still not used to being loved, but I do love you. I would never hurt you.”
“I’m sorry.” He mumbled the words a second time as he rested his cheek on their shoulder.
“I know, but you’re always doing this. You have to try to stop jumping to the worst case scenario.”
“I’ll work on it. I promise.”
“That’s all I can ask for.”

Deathnote - Mu Chapter One lxlight 18+
L lay on the cold floor.
The room was dark, but you could see dim light around him, it was visible enough for him to make out a person in the darkness. The stranger slouched in his chair and sighed heavily. A glimmer of light shined faintly revealing the man's biker style clothing: red jacket, jeans, and leather boots but his face was shrouded with darkness. L could just about see his mundane expression as he got up from the floor peering closer. The man sat on his chair with his fist brought up to his chin appearing quite tired. He shifted his head lazily to the left surprised as he had not expected someone to be right in front of him especially not L of all people.
Leaning forward he stared at the peculiar man he used to know. The disbelief clouded his judgement and like that his eyes widened, and his jaw dropped. He simply could not believe what he was seeing; it had been his belief since day one that he would never see another human again. Yet here was the strange individual that he had not seen for years, 5 years in fact. He knew if it were not for their strong rivalry and his unique looks, L's face would have been forgotten completely.
"L... Are you real? " he stuttered lifting slightly from his seat as if he were seeing a mirage.
"Hello Kira-Kun," L answered avoiding his question whilst smiling. Light was puzzled and this pleased L greatly. He could not remember the last time he saw Light look this way.
"So, this is the place of nothingness," he added, looking around the desolate space. The room seemed to go on and on, clouded in complete blackness. Besides the one chair Light was sitting on as well as the side table with its vintage lamp which gave enough light to see one another it was a wasteland. L thought that though it appeared menacing in the dark with the little setup Light had it would be quite peaceful to relax and perhaps read a book. Or at least as peaceful as it could be here.
"It's pretty bland" Light stated nervously. Taking a deep breath he pointed to a replica of a chair that appeared in front of him.
L looked amazed, how was that possible, he was sure it was not there a second ago. No, he knew it was not there before.
"Please sit," Light said gesturing with his hands for the dark-haired detective to crouch in his seat, in the odd way he was known for doing.
"Kira-Kun please sit also," Light sat back down returning to his nonchalant behaviour. "Here I thought the justice driven L would end up in heaven but here you are" Light stated with a questioning look.
"Oh, don't act so sad about it am I really that bad?" L asked. "If you must know I wrote my name down before the Shinigami did, this made her efforts to kill me futile... I would also like to tell you that I did not appreciate that creepy smile Kira-Kun gave me," L exclaimed making Light roll his eyes. It had been so long since Light had seen him, yet he appreciated that the detective was still the same.
"You never change, do you? He chuckled lightly but L found it far from funny.
"You know I'm waiting, Kira-Kun," he says tapping his finger on the edge of the armrest. Light looked at him blankly
"For what?" he asked receiving a tired expression. The younger of the two sighed and took a large breath preparing himself to admit his defeat. "You were right as always I was Kira," Light answered.
"And" L moves his wrist for him to continue. Light raises an eyebrow and sighs again.
"You outsmarted me and survived... But then again you also died so we can hardly call that winning, can we? " he finishes, L opens his mouth to speak but Light shuts it as a Deathnote sits in his hand. "Hmm let's see here," Light flicks the pages to get to L's real name but before he could reach the end L grabs it. "How did you get this I destroyed it?" L asked concerned
"Oh, calm down I manifested it and it doesn't even take effect in here," Light explains.
L was well and truly stumped. He had to admit he never thought he would see Light again or anyone. L had felt miserable. The detective had had a shitty day he remembered he was counting the minute, dreading the thought of dying. He had expected that he would be briefly be alive and then dead, he would no longer exist. L believed he had seen everything in life, nothing ever confused him and he found no true excitement, no mystery could not be solved but ever since he met Light this had changed. He knew that from here on out it would only get stranger after all he was no longer in the real world anymore.
"Manifested?" he questioned squinting his eyes at the brunette, Light then placed two cups of hot tea on the table. He adds two sugars for himself and stops before asking
"It was 6 wasn't it?" he asked, L nodded astonished at the sight in front of him.
Light adds the sugar to the tea moving it toward his guest before taking a sip of his own. "I never knew how you could drink that. Isn't it all sludgy?" L became wide-eyed at Light's interest, he had never really commented on his behaviour all that much, it seemed funny that now he would question his actions.
"Would Light-Kun like to try?" Light gave the cup a pondering glance before looking back at L nodding. He takes the cup savouring the warmth with his hands.
"What happened to you calling me Kira-Kun?" Light asked.
"What? Would you prefer me to call you that?"
Light just shrugs the suggestion "Lights fine," he adds taking a sip and cringing at the so-called tea before passing it back to the amused L.
"I also favour Light to Kira, Light... was a friend to me,"
Light's cup slipped slightly from his finger making a loud clank, fortunately, it was not shattered to bits. Light was startled as he tried to steady his cup, he was looking at L as though he was speaking another language. It had been his sneaking suspicious the first time L had said that, that it was a farce, a ploy to intimidate or guilt him.
"You actually... like me? " Light asks sitting far back into his chair surprised.
"Of course, Light-Kun I liked you. Why didn't a tiny bit of you like me?" L asks amused.
"Well yes, Ryu... L... Well, I'll be honest I didn't like you one bit," He said whilst watching L's expression not change. "But thinking back now I have to admit there was something very endearing about you"
Light could remember all the moments where they would purposely annoy the living hell out of each other. It was only natural he thought, they both had such a strong character. He felt a bittersweet feeling in his stomach, he had never had such a strong interaction with anyone in his whole life. This was before he had met the infuriating detective and he remembered how he wished to squish him under his shoe. No one had ever gotten on Light nerves as much as he had. But his distaste toward L was all in the past and he knew that he deserved to be here. He didn't fault his own beliefs of killing those who deserved it but there were ever so many people caught involved that he had murdered in the process. Biting his lip, he continued to lose track of the man in front of him. This realization abruptly occurred in his mind as he awoke from his thoughts embarrassed that he was so caught up in his head. "Um, Ryuzaki... "
L looked at Light concerned before placing his finger under his chin raising his head up to face him. "It's Lawliet," L says smiling gently, knowing there was nothing to fear anymore. Light looked confused before he smiled cheekily
"Well really L? How in the hell would I have guessed that? " Light said chuckling.
"Oh, I'm sorry, would you have liked me to serve it up on a gold platter?" L says giving Light's notebook back. "Well now that you mention it," he says shielding himself before getting a playful hit on the arm. They both exchanged a smile and then L remembered the memento he had obtained.
"Oh here Light-Kun," he says removing the watch from his wrist and placing it in front of Light "Is that my …" Light starts. "Well now L, I never would have taken you as a grave robber," he says grinning.
"It's hardly stealing more like inherited," L stated. "I'm only sorry that I never repaired it," L exclaims feeling a strange sense of guilt, not only did the watch have a crack but it had also stopped ticking, simply frozen in time.
"Are you sure about that? It seems to be working just fine" Light asks. L leaned forward wide-eyed.
"Did you do that?" L asks pointing to Light receiving a cheeky expression. Light redirects his hand to the startled detective. Leaving L confused, he skimmed through the notebook "Ahh here it is L Lawliet. You wrote ... Will die quietly 23 days after Light Yagami's death." Light gave a scrawl towards L before sighing heavily. "It has only been 23 days since I died huh, feels like a billion," he says with a bored expression on his face.
"You know Kira-Kun when I think about it, I'm pretty annoyed at you. You are the reason we are stuck here in the first place. Not only that Watari is dead because of you," L states coldly. It had taken that self-absorbed expression on Light's face to remember this man was not truly his friend. How could you even consider him to be a friend for even a second, he questioned.
Light looked down again for the second time. Swallowing loudly, he scratched the back of his neck giving L an anxious look "I really don't know what to say... I fucked up I don't even know how it even got to this point." He exclaimed refusing to look at L.
"At first, when the Death Note fell to the ground, I used it to kill bad people. It was something that made me feel like I was making a difference. I couldn't stand seeing these people doing such disgusting things and always getting away with it. I remember my father coming home every night looking older and older after witnessing all these horrible cases. I remember the dread on his face sometimes when he had to go in. Although he wouldn't admit it, my father is... my father was proud and wouldn't have let anyone know how he truly felt. I knew exactly what the punishments were going to be. All those cases where they were let off or got it too easy, it was sickening. I had grown tired of seeing good people suffer whilst evil people lived, waiting to be released to only continue to be cruel. It was truly disgusting. The legal system did not make it better, releasing rotten people for good behaviour when those bad people didn't have the balls to behave badly. Then there was those who faked good behaviour to get out sooner. It was truly repulsive to watch!" Kira growled, feeling all of his rage resurface.
He had spent many days trying to get rid of these feelings. God knows he had tried ever since he was little to accept the fact there were bad people. But let's face it even from the beginning before he had tested the notebook's power, he was intrigued at the idea that it could actually work. In fact, he needed it to work.
Light had been damn near perfect at everything, but he had lost his sense of joy for relishing over his own achievements. But being Kira was different. He found that he would gladly kill for himself. This was for him; this was something that meant something to him! Not to his parents or "friends". Not to those girls that would count all his achievements as reasons why Light was the perfect package for them. He had found something that was important, something that made him feel alive, that brought peace of mind. But the last shred of his humanity died when he killed L. Lind Taylor, it was then that he murdered a man he believed to be innocent. He believed it was L and he remembered the anger he felt when the man had called him "evil" the anger was too much for him to bear and that's when he had thrown away his morals completely. He had not only ruined himself, but he was responsible for killing those who didn't deserve it, he had gotten his father killed, his sister kidnapped and sent to a psychiatric hospital and this, of course, hurt his mother, the woman who had only supported him and was proud of him. The guilt that he had swallowed, starting to come up his throat and he felt it choking him.
He breathed in slowly gaining composure "But that is no excuse to harm you or Watari and I know it's not much but I'm truly sorry," Light sorrowfully said feeling his guilt rest in his stomach. L looked at him blankly he could see the emotions registering on Light's face. He practically saw the words and thoughts Light had, he knew that Light was in pain, broken and was swimming in guilt. He always wondered when Light would sink, after all he had done so much wrong. He knew he must have been in a numb state of repression, but he knew Light had never let himself feel. Since he had met him, Light appeared to always be in fight or flight mode. Everything he said and did was done for the purpose of survival, he never slipped up, he never let himself show any emotions. L could not help but relate to Light. L had been solving crimes for years and from working on cases he knew they were far from rejoiceful. It had been sickening at times and he knew that it brought him in terrible states as well as contributed to his insomnia. He could not fault Light's feelings. L felt his anger dissolve and his desire to make Light feel better grew.
"Forget it Light-Kun, it is all in the past, "L says gently. Light raised his head as if to say something but found himself apologetically smiling. "Now Light-Kun I wish to know more about manifesting. Show me how to do it, I wish for something sweet,"
"Okay I'll try and help you," he said sitting up. "Close your eyes. Now think of the thing you want. Now imagine it is with you let your senses become involved, smell it, taste it. Now believe it is here... Did you want a smartie?" L opens his eyes to see a singular sweet.
"Hmm... only one," L scowls. Before picking it up and eating it, tsking. L looked irritated, he had wanted a bowl of them, and here he was with one. It wasn't the fact that L had only managed to get one that was annoying, it was the tired feeling that came with manifesting it. Light couldn't bear seeing L scrawl, it had made him think L was behaving cute, which would certainly not do.
"Dear Lord. Stop pouting. You've made one, didn't you? You'll get better with practice, as well as rest," Light states feeling warmth grow in his cheeks.
"Kira-Kun is very testy right now, is it that he thinks of my unsuccessful attempt as a reminder of his own failure?" L says smiling, to this Light does something L never expected he would do. Light had turned to him and stuck his tongue out
"Isn't that a little immature? " L laughs.
"Perhaps," Light says throwing a smartie at L
"Now Light-Kun no throwing," Light grins evilly
"I thought you wanted smarties," he asks making a bunch rain on top of L before bursting out laughing. L sits there stunned before retrieving the sweets and eating them "That was very naughty Light-Kun," L exclaimed waging his finger in front of Light. Before drenching cold water all over Light grinning at his triumph.
"Ughh, really L really!" he says feeling cold.
"Light-Kun should wear something else before he freezes to death" Light chuckles at him "Sorry L but we're already dead can't get any deader," he says starting to remove his clothes. "Can't Light-Kun make more appear on his body instead of changing?" L asks "Why? Does me undressing make you uncomfortable?" Light asks teasingly.
"No of course not I just wish to know," he answered closing his eyes and turning slightly to the side with a blush on his face. Light smiled "I have to remove my clothes to manifest new ones" he answers.
"You know you don't have to watch me I'm not your Kira suspect anymore," Light says almost singing it. L freezes before looking away realizing what he had been doing. Ha Light thought. "All finished," he adds. Turning to L's flushed face smiling to himself. Why was he so cute when he blushes Light questioned.
"You know L even though you're a stubborn pest, I kind of like you being around," Light said surprising himself. Did I really say that? He asked himself looking back up to L noticing his expression.
The look on L's face showed he was touched. Never had anyone said anything so nice to him. From hearing other people's opinions on him he could say their opinions had been more than unsatisfactory. He recalled Naomi Misora and what she had told him a couple of months before the Kira case. He remembered asking about his double Beyond Birthday, he was only curious. Beyond was a man that looked so incredibly similar to him. His actions, his quirks, and even the way he spoke were close to identical. To this question he had gotten the most critical and heart-wrenching answer that he had ever heard.
"Creepy and pathetic... if we divided everyone in the world into those that would be better off dead and those that wouldn't there's no doubt in my mind that he'd be the former. Such a complete freak that it amazes me he hasn't killed himself," Stated Misora.
It had made L feel inadequate and useless as if he were nothing. But here stood Light gleaming at him and complimenting him. He held his gaze at Light before rising from his seat embracing him. Light was frozen, but he soon regained control of his arms and hugged L back smelling the sweet scent in L's hair. Coconut? What an intoxicating smell he thought. Smelling his hair much deeper this time he found himself wanting to play with it. L's grip slightly tightened he had never really been the hugging type but the way he felt inside he knew he had missed out all those years. All that time staying alone but at this moment he had been struck by Lights words. Why? They weren't particularly sweet words.
"You know L even though you're a stubborn pest, I actually kind of like you being around". It was then he felt Light's fingers moving up towards his neck. "Light..." he started feeling Light's soft lips kiss his forehead. It had happened so fast L had wondered whether he had imagined it. L felt the chair distort and transform into a soft couch under him. Light moved the detective back, tracing his finger softly down his cheek. L felt a shiver along his spine as his head started to cloud over. Looking into Light's eyes he could see that they were clouded with something he had never seen before.

Chapter 2 of my Lawlight story, “Queries” (rated M). https://archiveofourown.org/works/29342865/chapters/72072144
During the Yotsuba arc--after L and Light have begun some relationship, that had just started as L trying to trick relationship out of Light--it becomes clear that Light is having some hallucinations because of brain tumors.
And this will lead to L questioning everything he'd thought he'd decided about Light's character, and Kira later eventually wondering if he should or shouldn't be spending some of his remaining time as he is.
Naturally, Light's coming back to headquarters didn't sit well with everyone… or anyone for that matter. And while L was glad that technology had progressed enough, that Light could easily give himself chemo while he worked... a lot of times, wires from said machine attached to Light would get tangled up, or something else would go wrong with it, and Light would swiftly have to go to the hospital. But Light was figuring out how to deal with that. He was a genius, L supposed.
But Light wasn’t the only one trying to logic out everything new in his life. L wondered where his own conscience was in all of this... Surely, he should have been sympathizing with Light, if he actually cared about him or whatever his heart was telling him.
He also should have been trying to accommodate Light here, to the best of his ability… but L wasn’t doing that. And he felt nothing, except for a strange kind of ire against Light. No, Kira.
"…Light-kun, if I found Kira and he was ill, with only a short amount of time to live, would it be inhumane to sentence him to death?"
And of course, Light punched L in the face for that little gem. And when he did, the detective thought it was a very good thing that the two of them were in the kitchen right now—where no one could see them—and that they barely wore the handcuffs anymore, otherwise L would have gone flying once more.
"Ryuzaki, you bastard! Is that really what you think of me? I bet a cruel part of you wishes that I was Kira, so he’d really suffer in his death, huh?!"
Well, there really was no denying it, was there? L thought, as Light’s hand that was now attached to L’s shirt—holding him up—somehow went down said article of clothing to somewhat arouse L, even as they fought.
“Yes. No matter who Kira is, I think he deserves something like that, for all the lives he’s so carelessly thrown away. Even if he is you, Light-kun, Does this make you still want to sleep with me? Does it make you want to kill me?”
In the back of L’s mind, where his conscience did still exist, he couldn’t fathom how he could ever be so cold to someone who was dying: someone who he even felt something for, which was a rarity in and of itself.
L was probably even lying here—since he truly wouldn’t want Kira to suffer, because otherwise he’d be just like that man in his desire for just desserts. But L still couldn’t help but to try and get a rise out of Yagami Light. He just loved the little games that they played…
But Light seemed near crying now, and so the game suddenly wasn’t very fun anymore. And L found himself near putting a finger into his mouth and biting his nail to the quick in punishment for this.
“Ryuzaki, you’re the worst. Honestly, the worst! I’m not Kira, but I could still see why he would want to target you. I can’t believe I ever thought I lov-
“Anyway, I guess being cutoff is how you get the job done, huh L? So, what did I expect? …And we’ve been here long enough. We should go back and join everyone now, before anyone suspects anything.”
Though Light was presumably calm and not furious now, he still made a show of throwing away L’s strawberry cake for good measure. And L thought about switching to another persona for it: mayhap the one where he acted all too innocent. He easily could have looked at the fallen cake in faux-confusion with a finger pressed to his lips, couldn’t he?
But he did not. Since for whatever reason, L had activated his ice queen personality and he seemed hellbent on staying there. "Light-kun knew when he began our 'relationship' that it was all a game. I find it hard to understand why he’s so upset now. And why should we go back to the task force now, when we haven’t even done anything for them to be suspicious about? I say we have some fun, and give them just that.”
“Ryuzaki, what are you talking abou-” But Light’s words were cut off, when L unzipped Light’s fly, released his cock, and then leaned down to try and give the teen the best blowjob he’d ever performed.
L would have liked to believe that his doing this was some sort of minor way of making up for how he’d been treating Light… even though all he was doing was continuing to toy with the boy’s feelings, just like the monster he’d always known he was.
After the two’s “bathroom break”—and they were wearing the handcuffs again, to explain why they’d had to leave together in the first place—L and Light diligently got back to work.
And then Light did the worst thing he ever could have done, in L’s book, in finding something important before even he did.
Though L ended up discovering this in a very untraditional way. Light had collapsed in front of his computer monitor, that held the glorious information he had clearly just uncovered before he passed out. And L saw this info just when he’d been going to check on his boyfriend and call the paramedics in for him… he did not do that now.
It seemed that Kira's power had been moved to the Yotsuba group, if the data Light-kun had uncovered meant anything. Most interesting.
And L knew that the old Kira would have been expecting him to follow this lead as soon as he came upon it.
And so he did, long before he even thought about going to the hospital after Soichiro had finally gotten Light there.
Eventually, L did find himself walking into St. Luke’s International, pushing open the worn door as if it were his destiny to do so. (And of course he was here, the back of L’s useless mind told him now, since he clearly loved Light.) And L was beginning to think that he should just take up residence at this place.
Light looked horrible… L saw when he reached Light’s room. Worse than he ever had—with red puffy eyes, pale skin, a runny nose, and an utter weakness about him as he struggled to keep his eyes open. And it was that, that that made L drop the façade he’d been wearing for so long, and actually care.
And he started off that act of caring, in deciding to sit on Light’s bed, by his side, like any significant other might do if their loved one was sick. …Fortunately, Light’s family was out at the moment, buying him “something better than hospital food”, so they wouldn’t see this rather intimate act.
"Light-kun... no, Light. I know you find the ‘kun’ honorific childish… I want you to know how substantial the information you found today is. Thank you for doing your part."
Light gave L a searching look then. And if L was a lesser man, he might have gotten into a name calling fight with Light over it, for his having just hurt him in his attempt to be kind.
“…You know I don't believe your recognizing my contributions for a second, right Ryuzaki? I knew it was a game to you, the moment we began kissing. Of course I did. And it will be even when we finally do have sex, I know. If anything, I think you're just trying to assuage your guilt here, by complimenting me... But even so, I know that’s a lot coming from you. So, thank you."
Outside the window, a frost had begun to set in. Its icky fingers drifted closer to L’s person, and he thought it was one step closer to turning L into death, like he always knew he was. Because what else could he be, if he always destroyed everything so thoroughly like this? And it was in seeing such fault in himself, something that he couldn’t bear, that he decided to try and put blame elsewhere.
It was just with the certainty at which Light had said all of that, that L found himself wanting to fuck Light into the headboard to try and make some kind of point. Or to just kiss him delicately, to let the boy know he was wrong about his guesses… and that really, he was the thing that L now treasured most in the world.
L did neither of those things, but instead decided to try and continue being nice. Didn’t they say to kill them with niceness, or something like that? If that was the case, L would prove that he had the higher body count than even Kira.
"Light... I want you to forget the way I've been treating you lately. Let's go back to the way we were. I’ll even find better ways for you to work on the case while being sick."
Light sighed at that—nearly knocking his heart monitor off, as he flexed a finger—and L was lost. Shouldn’t someone as ambitious as Light—ambitious as Kira—leap at an opportunity like this, and try to take advantage of L with it?
Instead, Light just seemed bone tired. "I'm on my deathbed, Ryuzaki, and you're still playing games? I can’t believe you! But I still want us to be together, so I guess I’ll listen to tht… reluctantly."
And if L was poetic—and he was certainly anything but—he’d say that right now, Light was cleanser on an overly drawn canvas. And if L looked at him—though he very much desired not to, because he didn’t want to be overcome by his own emotions—he would have even said that Light himself looked like a drawing of perfect angles. And he didn’t at all have the entanglements that L usually hated in a person. Light was simply as he was… even now, while somehow lost in his own charade, Yagami Light was still Yagami Light, and L couldn’t help being moved by that.
Though he shouldn’t have been, since it was clear that Yagami Light now cared about L too much. And that had never been part of the plan. It was far too dangerous. And yet, here they were.
And L didn’t know if it was for these cursed feelings he had, the investigation, or for hate that he found himself asking the next question: "Do your doctors have any new suggestions for you, Light?"
“…They’ve suggested radiology for me, Ryuzaki.”
L had figured that his friend might say that. And when he did, it made him hunch down and think, drawing away from the bed that he’d been sitting on for a good fifteen minutes now. If he were in Light’s position, he honestly wasn’t sure what he’d do. Did he care about his life so much, that he would risk what that might do to him? Or would he let his suicidal tendencies get the best of him again? …
Maybe L did know. And if it came down to it, Light could do that, too.
And just as L thought that, it began thundering outside. And if he didn’t have such good control over his facial reaction to things, he would have laughed.
But now was not a time to be happy. No, here she should have been worried about his lover for a number of reasons, so Light deserved L’s candor now. And L gave that to him. “I wouldn't do it, if I were in your position, Light-kun. Zapping your cells with lasers sounds more dangerous than using drugs to me …But then again, I'm not in your position, am I? So, who am I to say, really? Do what you think is best, as I’m sure you always do."
"…If it weren’t for some sort of grace, maybe you would be in my position, L.”
And at these words from Light, L couldn’t help but to laugh bitterly. This was the most Kira-like thing that Light had ever said. But L was going to leave it alone... for now. Since he had a heart within his chest, after all, if he looked hard enough for it.
“Ignore everything I just said… Get radiology treatment, Light. If they think it will save your life, do it. And then come back to me, when you can,” and L walked away then, deciding to leave Light to his family for now. Since they all deserved to be together when Light was dying, didn’t they?
So, leave the situation, he did… and L tried to ignore the horrid feeling that he was forsaking his other half as he did so.
But though L had laid his heart on the line for Light there, Light had apparently taken to heart L’s first words—and didn’t follow his later advice, to try and save himself—and that had L biting his nails, as Light became even more sickly when he returned this time.
And if Light didn’t look like he was about to have his life claimed my a reaper, L would have thought that Kira was doing all of this on purpose to garner some sympathy from him. Who knew? Perhaps he still was. But L had begun to doubt that, as his feelings for Light grew.
.…And it pained L, more than he would have liked to admit, to see the person he still had some sort of relation with every night, hurting this much.
But even then, L still tried to keep the game between them going somewhat. Because even if this Light was no longer Kira, L knew he still longed for the thrill as much as he did. So, he poised a question to his boyfriend now.
"Light-kun," L started, popping a cherry into his mouth and then tying the stem with his tongue. "…What if you don’t have cancer? I'm not doubting the severity of your illness, no, but perhaps you were misdiagnosed. Some of your symptoms do line up with Parkinson’s, I think. And doctors make mistakes countless times… though I don’t mean to frighten you."
But frightening Light was exactly what L did. Or made him angry, more like. And Soichiro too, for that matter. He seemed like he would have been quick to jump to his son’s aid, if Light wasn’t a much better smooth talker himself. "Yeah, that would be so much better, Ryuzaki. I'd just die later—and suffer more—and end up quadriplegic. I think I'll pass."
The truth was, that a part of L almost hoped that Light would have Parkinson's. Because despite what Light was saying… there was a chance that he wouldn’t get so ill with it. At least not fast. But since Light would still die with that, L was close to suggesting that Light just might have Chron’s, but he thought he’d be doubting Light’s strength far too much, if he said that. And just after he’d promised he would be nicer, too. So L kept these thoughts sealed.
"I apologize, Light-kun. It's only a three percent possibility, after all. But I thought I should still say something to try and help you, on the off-chance that I’m right."
And it must have been the grim subjects that caused Yagami Soichiro to bring up something that L never would have expected. And that was truly something.
"Ryuzaki...” the man said, “it seems to me that you and Light—our brightest workers here—haven’t been making any headway, because of Light’s condition. I hate to say this...  but the Yotsuba group is only killing their own rivals, and there can't be as many of them as there are criminals in the world. So, the killings aren’t like before... Maybe we should give up and let them continue, so I can take my son home and let him rest. I say this all as a concerned father."
Though L certainly understood why Soichiro would ask this, L would admit to feeling let down by the chief here: it was like how pretty much everyone in L’s life disappointed him, besides Wammy… and Light, annoyingly enough.
But if L had a son, mightn’t he feel the same way about him that Soichiro did about Light now? He tried to focus on that. "Yagami-san… While I, of course, will continue looking for Kira, neither of you are required to do the same. Yes, Yagami-san: go and rest and be with your family; I cannot thank you enough for your service. You too, Light."
L was searching for a strawberry at this point, not giving the situation as much as attention as she should have been—partly because he was disassociating, and because he was sure Light would say no, he guessed—that L felt like he’d been hit by a bus when Light soon agreed (Matsuda-san, too, if his words to Light of “But you’ve come so far!” meant anything.)
"Th-that may be best, Ryuzaki," Light admitted, with a pensive look in his eyes. And L whipped his head to stare at his boyfriend in astonishment. All his calculations had told him that Light—that Kira—wouldn’t even abandon the case for even his own life. So, did this mean that he was wrong about Light, and about him being Kira, too?
L wanted to beg Light to stay for two reasons, but he had to pretend he had the moral high ground here. And so, the tired detective did. “Don’t antagonize them, Matsuda-san. If the two of them want to leave, they're certainly allowed to do so. However, Light-kun, I must suggest you stay one more night for surveillance purposes."
And there was a needy tone to L’s voice, that he prayed the task force didn’t notice. Honestly, L didn’t know if he was wanting Light to stay to examine him one more time, or so he could get laid. Perhaps both.
But whatever L was feeling, Light have must been experiencing it, too. For he looked at L with shining eyes and decided his fate. "...One more night then, Ryuzaki. I can handle that much."
And L chose to give a discreet smile, and not think on how their parting would be such sweet sorrow.
...
Later that night, when the two of them were trying to express whatever it was that they felt for each other, it was Light on top of L. And the two of them were close to having sex: moreso than they ever had been by far. Light was just about to enter L; and the fact that Light was still waiting and teasing him was truly torturous… but really, L knew that they should probably stop here. Light was getting tired. And if they became this intimate with each other, wouldn’t it make everything worse?
So, L gently pushed Light off of him, indicating that he should retire, and gave him a quick kiss with all of his apologizes laid bare in it.
And then, truly shockingly Light gave one himself. “…I'm sorry for everything too, Ryuzaki. Please don't leave me, if you can manage it. I know you’re somewhat agoraphobic… but can’t you take some time off the case to come and see me?”
L gave that much thought, as he snuggled into Light—smelling his fine-shampooed hair—and wishing he never had to let go.
The truth was, that L didn’t see it within himself to do that. He was too set in his ways. And if Light was dying and wasn’t Kira, it was probably best they never saw each other again.
But still… L didn’t exactly want to break Light’s heart right now, so perhaps to choose his words carefully…"Light… your leaving is alright. Don’t feel bad about it.," L tried to placate his first ever friend, while placing a kiss to his neck that also showed that they weren’t just friends, didn’t it? "You've done more than enough for the case, and for me personally. So as much as I would like to continue where we left off just a moment ago… it’s probably best for your own sake, if you begin packing right now.”
But that seemed to be the wrong thing to say. Light was less rested now, and he sat up to glare at the storm outside, as if it had personally offended him.
Finally, there were these words from Light, before L was about to joke about getting out a lie detector to unearth the truth from him. "...I wouldn't be leaving, Ryuzaki, if I thought I could offer anything to this investigation. But I'm too sick to now. And... because you’re the best detective in the world, and think it wasme… I'm now afraid I used to be Kira. So maybe my leaving is a just an excuse to get away and protect you from myself."
"…Or your staying here, if you chose that, could offer some wonderful insight into Kira. Since even if you aren’t him, you’re quite good at profiling him. But I understand why you have to leave, Light: like I said, don’t worry about it."
Deep down, L knew that he was only being nonchalant because he believed no one could ever really love him—wasn’t that why he was so clearly pulling away from Light’s embrace now?—but he refused to give that truth any thought, and rather chose to be “selfless”. Even wearing a smile on his face, and everything.
“Hey, Ryuzaki… you know I’d never leave if I had another choice, right?”
And L hated this guilt within Light: absolutely despised that he’d made this perfectly normal boy—who was not Kira, at least not right now—fall in love with him, just so he could study what he believed the mind of a serial killer to be.
But near instantly, as he still felt very guarded, Ryuzaki tried to push back this notion that he’d caught feelings too, because the great detective L was above that, wasn’t he?
Squeezing Light close to himself now for a very selfish thing that L wanted to pin their whole “relationship on”, L found himself speaking once more. “Of course I know that, Light… Do you what must to protect yourself. But if you and Chief Yagami ever want to return, just give my one mobile a call.”
L let himself be pulled into another kiss by Light then. And they did more than that, too. Light was astonished by how sweet their coupling here actually was… but he knew it wouldn’t last.
A Month Later
To say that L found absolutely no leads after two of his best workers left the investigation, would, sadly, have been an understatement.
The Kira Countermeasures Force had assumed that Higuchi was the third Kira, of course, but when they had brought him in for questioning… he’d denied everything and had seemed out of sorts with himself, and like he’d lost his grip on reality entirely.
This was all been brought to light when Watari was torturing the man (something that hadn’t set well with L’s people at all); and then the murders had started up again. And L wasn’t sure if it was due to the second Kira, a new Kira, or somehow Higuchi still. Though L doubted that one, since these killings didn’t match the ones he had done before. Criminals were back to dying like live stock, and so L surmised that the second Kira was back in action again. And so, he needed to bring Amane Misa back into the fold.
L had been forced to release the girl when all the “evidence” he had had against her had gone nowhere, and her manipulator had left the building. So, he wasn’t exactly looking forward to this call…
Speaking of Yagami Light… L knew that he was not the first Kira at the moment. Light was undergoing massive treatments for his health, and the hospital seconded this. And Soichiro himself kept giving L updates about Light… not that the man was entirely trustworthy, as he was clearly biased where his son was concerned, but L knew he could probably be believed in this case.
As for Light himself… he kept sending L risqué texts, which proved to the detective that he hadn’t entirely lost his sense of humor, which was good L supposed.
And he was embarrassed to admit that the texts left him wanting Light, and to be with him again post-haste.
And, yes: he’d even decided that he preferred the feeling of Light inside of him, then what he thought it would feel like to be inside of Light. So, he wouldn’t fight the boy about that again, if and when he got back. But none of this was important now. No. The task force breathing down his neck was what was.
“Ryuzaki, what’s your plan to get Misa-san here? You haven’t convicted her of anything… and you tortured her last time; and she won’t want to see you without Light-kun here,” Ide whispered right next to L, bringing him out of his stupor. And he’d startled L so thoroughly, that the man was lucky that he hadn’t used his Capoeira skills on him.
“He brings up a good point, Ryuzaki,” Matsuda allowed, as he cleverly put more sugar cubes into L’s coffee, so that it was practically swimming in them. What an irreplaceable part of the team Matsuda was, L thought now. And as such, L thought he could probably reward his team with some info here that they wouldn’t have ferreted out themselves.
“The plan, as it were, is to not be so brutal this time. I will not get a warrant for Misa-san, and will instead invite her in for a lovely chat with Light’s best friend and see what happens.”
“…Do you really think that will work, Ryuzaki?” Mogi-san asked what all of them were wondering, but so unsurely that L didn’t instantly berate him for doubting his superior. “Do you think that Misa-san can overlook what you did to her so easily?”
Watari, as if sensing the tension in the air, came in right then to offer the men smokes. And everyone took one, except for Matsuda (because he was still quite childish in L’s mind. He had expected nothing else), and L, who only liked the taste of sugar.
And as it happened, L thought about quipping that they all might die of cancer before Kira could ever to them—and L was about to send a glare Watari’s way for his choice here—but he did not.
Instead, L just spoke the truth that had become crystal clear to him. “I think you all forget how much Light-kun means to Misa-san.”
And as he always was, L was right.
Just a day later, he found himself sitting across from Misa like he had during her and Light’s disastrous date months ago (the bruise on L’s cheek stung from the memory of it), and she seemed altogether more put together and nervous than she ever had been before. And L zeroed in on that, like a shark would blood in the water.
"Err, what did you want to talk to me about, Ryuzaki? I wanted to go see Light! Have you heard that he may be going into remission already?!"
“I had heard, Misa-san,” L admitted, finding himself slightly grinning even though he didn’t want to and he thought he’d schooled himself better than this “And I may be more thrilled about that then anyone... But important things must be discussed, so-”
“Exactly, Ryuzaki! We have to talk about the important things! I know you brought me here that creep Higuchi, but I’d rather talk about how you and Light are friends!”
This was… suspicious to L. Though, to be fair, anything Light or Misa did was suspect to him. But it was like Misa had developed a conscience and was wanting L to be Light’s friend, so the two of them wouldn’t have to kill him. Perhaps L could work with that.
L leaned forward, steepled his hands together, and thought deeply. “I understand that that’s important, Misa-san… but Higuchi. You wanted Kira to be stopped because Light-kun was working on the case before, yes? So why do you hold back now?” Misa’s lovely golden eyes flashed then, with a kind of emotion that L couldn’t entirely decipher. And even though L thought he was most certainly gay, even he was captivated by them and all the pent up things there. “Stop talking about Higuchi, Ryuzaki! You think Light is Kira. We all know you do. And you’ll never stop doing so… So what if I was prepared to tell you you’re not wrong, per se, if you keep being his friend?” L felt his throat drop into his stomach; and his eyes no doubt flashed in the way that Misa’s just had. It- it couldn’t be this easy, could it?
Had Light done something to upset Misa for her to betray him like this? …But was it a betrayal? Misa still wanted L to be Light’s friend, so how did that work?
“…Misa-san, are you saying-”
“I’ll never say it again or testify in a court or anything like that… but work with me, Ryuzaki, and I’ll work with you.”
Yes, L could definitely do this.
He reached across the chasm, took Misa’s hand, and shook it.

some detailed thoughts on an LABB movie w a ‘read more’ bc i have A Lot To Say
i want it to be a movie bc i love movies
im also open to the concept of a mini series but a full tv show might be a challenging stretch
animated or live action would both be incredible and both have their unique pros and cons
the whole thing is DISTINCTLY LA
busy streets and palm trees and the Hollywood sign and the shiny, overly false glamour of everything
would really contrast well with Rue Ryuzaki’s disturbing fake-ness
like he’s just as fake as the whole city, that both he and Hollywood have on this costume to hide tragedy and hideous deeds
i want it to have the glitz and glam and extravagance of the recent gatsby movie (which i adore, dont come for me)
if bahz luhrmann doesn’t direct i will RIOT id die for bahz luhrmann he’s Good and he has the same energy and chaotic attitude of beyond birthday himself
i want beyond to have a scene like the one where Nick realizes who Gatsby is and Gatsby turns around with the champagne flute and the fireworks go off in slow motion as he smiles that’s my favorite shot in all of cinematic history no joke
it’s HIGHLY STYLIZED. i want bright colors and weird aesthetic choices
I also want some shockingly beautiful frames of LA and surprisingly sophisicated shots of Beyonds face lit up in different neon colors or something
Indie enough to be weird and fun but pop enough to be easily digestible
it opens with mello writing his book (like moulin rouge!! a;lsdjfk)
his burn scars are just healing and he knows he’ll die soon so he has to write down all his important memories, leave something behind
he wants to write down something important to him, something that he can leave for Near, something that might put his own life and actions into context
something that might help other people understand who he was more
so of course, he thinks of beyond
who he respects and admires and pities
who has such a similar and yet different story from Mello’s own
so maybe in understanding beyond and understanding how mello feels about beyond
people will understand mello
near will understand mello
so mello gets to work detailing this story his incredible mentor L once told him, describing this beautiful memory he has of meeting with and talking to L and how L told him about Beyond
(in this scene, you don’t SEE L. you just get an idea of what he looks like, flashes and shots, so that the audience can know L well enough to still wonder about the identity Rue Ryuzaki throughout the movie)
and then of course, we dive into the story
Beyond is OVER THE TOP. he’s more than unsettling, he’s downright terrifying. but he’s still somehow intriguing and even charming at times, like he can turn the smoulder on and off at will.
Hes a disaster nb, a fabulous hodgepodge of discarded gender roles and impressive makeup skills
Him practicing his evil laugh and trying so desperately to be this comic villain didjdjdje hes such a loser i love him that scene NEEDS to make an appearance
he and naomi’s chemistry is incredible to watch on screen because beyond dominates any scene he’s in unless naomi is there to challenge him because her acting is also so powerful that when they’re on screen together, it’s like you can’t tear your eyes away from this insane car wreck that is their relationship
and NAOMI
a;lksdfj;dlkfj naomi misora <3 <3 <3 <3 ok im ready
so naomi is also a powerful presence on screen, even though she’s not crawling on the ground or eating with her hands or you know whatever ridiculous garbage beyond is doing
more time is spent on her
her disastrous relationship with raye
her feelings over her suspension from the FBI
and really play up the whole jessica jones thing she’s got going on
i want black leather for DAYS
I want “gritty LA detective who’s on suspension from the FBI because she doesn’t play by the rules” or whatever except it’s a twist because not only is she not a man, like this trope usually calls for, but it turns out she was suspended because of her tenderness and humanity instead of her brutality
she still needs to have MULTIPLE fight scenes, a few with beyond and maybe even a few with other attackers, who she absolutely mops the floor with
but then she and beyond have a scene where they fight against someone together
he’s not a good fighter. she mostly has to save his butt every time but he’s just happy to be there and probably keeps saying stuff like ‘wow misora you’re amazing!’ and she’s like ‘?!?! ryuzaki you loser?1?! run?!?’
and of course, there’s enough twists and changes from the book to keep everyone on their toes, but GOOD changes
like maybe we go back to mello a few times and he has more of his own subplot where his relationship to near is revealed more fully, that he wants near to understand him and he wants to reach out to near emotionally in this way
contrast mello’s story with beyond’s so when we learn beyond’s full story at the end, he and mello are revealed to be foils of each other
we get shots of wammy’s house and we see a and beyond interact and we see beyond’s life-destroying grief over a’s death
we get contrasting shots of wammy’s with mello and near and we’re allowed to hope that maybe they can be happier
A and beyond become something of a subplot leading up to as death but you dont entirely realize who beyond is until the big reveal at the end
maybe beyond does some more unsettling things that are just as creepy and in-character but are a terrible surprise for those who’ve already read the book!! i can’t imagine what other horrific thing he could do to scare naomi, but there’s got to be something
i’m rly into bday massacre bc i love naomi and beyond’s rly twisted relationship so i’d love to see more of him being in awe of her, more of them connecting, more of beyond opening up to her even. maybe she tells him a little bit about her suspension. just a little.
also if we could like clean up some of the plot holes in this joint pls and thank you
id even be ok if it’s insinuated that he self-sabotaged a little, on a conscious level or not, bc i feel like that wouldn’t be tooooooo ooc i mean, he’s a hot mess. most of this is just a really twisted cry for help anyway, at least in my interpretation. he wants people to realize he’s suffering. he just… can’t do it in a normal or healthy way :/
beyond pls a;lkdfj
Anyway. Theres also a boppin soundtrack
Fire is a big motif. Maybe make a connection between wildfires in CA and beyond using this case to self-destruct
A little more closure at the end. Thats part of the drive behind my bday massacre fanfic rn is that i feel like he and naomi never got any real closure on the traumatizing, like, week or two they spent together
I also want more closure on naomi as a character arc. I want her to dump rayes sorry butt and i want her to have had some sort of real internal change. None of this “she picks up her life where she left off and never thinks abt beyond again”
Of course, L is revealed and has his glorious little spill down the concrete subway stairs. Its What He Deserves :)
And of course we have to make the obvious contrast between both beyond and mello having survived serious burn injuries its just another thing that makes them such interestingly comparable characters
If Naomi visits Beyond in prison to say goodbye, i wouldnt be opposed. If they made my fanfiction into a movie i wouldnt be opposed
Mello prints out his book in the mafia hideout, his arms folded and waiting as paper after paper comes out, just begging any of these mafia dudes to mock him for liking to write. None of them do. Its a funny moment tho
He debates sending it to near, feeling so awkward and prideful, but he finally does it, leaving instructions for it to reach near after his death.
In the end, naomi and beyond are revealed to be dead at the same time as near receives the package from his dear mello
Naomi and beyond were doomed, and so were beyond and a, but now… near has mellos last love letter to him, cryptically begging him to try to understand. And so theres hope that although the rest of these relationships were doomed, maybe near can still have one piece of mello and be happy

21 for the writing prompts thing
me: oh wow this doesn’t hv a fandom or pairing attached to it. i could do anything w this prompt! how exciting.
also me: i’m literally going to write the same yotsuba arc lawlight that i always fall back on bc that’s who i am as a person.
21: “ Thanks for nothing. ”
Painted outside the window was a thick grey sky blurred by rain as it hit the glass. L tucked his hands into his pockets, chain jingling as he did.
“What does Light think about rain?”
Beside him, Light sat in a single sofa seat with a book. When L tried to read the title, Light moved his hand to cover it.  The chain jingled again as he turned a page and glanced at L. His long fingers rubbed the page corner andd flexed over the book’s spine. A long pause strung itself out between them with their eyes trained on each other. The rest of the task force had left for the day and they were alone except for the whine of every computer.
“I don’t know,” he said. “I guess it’s a little depressing.”
“Hm.” L pressed his thumb to his bottom lip. “You’re probably right. But I enjoy the rain. People say it’s cleansing.”
“Oh, really?” A tone of pure boredom underlined Light’s response. This drawl was cut by a slight grin. “Don’t chew your nails, Ryuzaki.”
“I’m not. I’m only resting my thumb here. Light should be more observant.”
Light let out a gargled scoff and rolled his eyes. His book dropped into his lap, forgotten, and he hiked himself up from the slouch he’d fallen into.
“This is ridiculous,” he said. “Does my not liking the rain make me more or less like Kira?”
“There’s no more or less Kira to be.” L turned his attention back to the rain. “You either are Kira or you aren’t.”
“Well. Which am I?”
“That’s what these are going to tell us." Hand raised, L shook it to indicate the handcuff around his wrist. Another ugly noise escaped Light and he dropped back into his chair. He crossed his arms and folded one leg over the other. His hands fumbled with his book until he had it open again. A frown curled his lips.
“I lost my place.” L hummed in acknowledgment while Light flipped through the pages and scanned for where he’d left off. “Oh, whatever. It’s not worth finding it again. The book’s not even that good.”
“It’s not like Light to give up.”
“I’m not giving up. I’m just sick of reading these dull books. I wish you’d let me bring my DS.”
“We couldn’t allow you to go back home after your captivity.”
“You mean after my first captivity.” Light turned a sour look on L, who didn’t respond besides an imperceptible tightening of his hand into a fist. “Or do you think this is just a fun vacation for me?”
His eyes were hard on the side of L’s face. They cut holes there trying to leave a scrape, a wound on him. Tilting his head to the side, L met Light’s gaze. A moment passed and the two moments until silence became a wall between them built upon bricks and bricks of unhappiness. Rain skittered on the window pane like fingers begging entrance. Light broke away first and reached to his mouth before letting his hand fall to his thigh. He felt L’s eyes rolling over him, calculating every angle at which he held himself.
“Perhaps we should ask if your father will bring your DS here.” L walked away from the window and tugged Light out of his seat. The momentum caused was sharp and Light collided with his back. Both of them knocked each other to the floor with Light stuck half curled around L, one arm pinned beneath his weight and the other one flung to the side. Heat flew to his cheeks. Next to him, L’s eyes were wide and darted around in wild surprise. The hem of his shirt rode up and his stomach, just on the edge of pudgy, caught Light’s unfortunate attention.
“Ow.” Light whispered. Every nerve he had was at war with each other in bright conflict. His body screamed from so much contact, so much touch, after weeks of nothing. L started to get up, forgetting he was tangled in the handcuff chain, and was jerked back to the floor. He lay there, hand on his chest and eyes to the ceiling, while Light held back an ocean of complicated thoughts.
“Well,” L said. “I’ve made a miscalculation as to my walking speed. I apologize, Light.”
“Yeah.” Light spoke into the floor with cheeks still stained red. “Try to not drag me around anymore. That might help.”
“I’ll try to keep that in mind for the future.”
They both began to quietly untangle themselves. L moved with a strange gentleness as he assisted Light up from the floor and that gentleness struck Light like a lighting bolt through a tree. He hated this feeling. A loathsome and oppressive air surrounded that feeling although inside that air a pleasant glow still shone. That anything good should be felt in L’s presence offended him entirely.
“Are you alright then?” A single finger touched his hand and Light jumped back. “I did mean what I said. I’ll have Watari ask your father if he can bring Light’s DS.”
“Thank you.” Attention swallowed by his embarrassment, Light saw only the tilt of his own body. L started to walk away and he trailed after him, careful to keep within a few steps of his pace. He lurched when L sat on the bed and picked up the phone.
What followed was mumbled conversation that Light heard none of. His thoughts were caught up in their own shame. How dare he have such poisonous excitement over the sight of L’s skin, over the idea of his physical existence, after he demolished so much of Light. This was the man who put his father’s gun against his head and let him pull the trigger. The fingers that touched him were the fingers that snapped a handcuff around his wrist and locked the door to every room they entered so Light couldn’t run. So he wouldn’t get away. Light must’ve been sick to ever think a single sweetened thought about him.
“Ah,” L said. “Alright. Well, try again in the morning then.”
Phone pinched between his thumb and forefinger, L dropped it back onto the dialer and gave Light an apologetic look.
“I’m afraid Watari was unable to get a hold of your father,” he said. “So we’ll have to ask him tomorrow. Light will have to make do with the books we have for now.”
“Mm.” A brattiness rose in Light’s throat. “Well. Thanks for nothing, I guess.”
“Light is being difficult.” L spoke with a drag to his voice but the corners of his mouth were sharp. “Is it because I made you fall?”
“No. The rain is making me tired.” Picking at a thread on his sweater, Light yanked on it until it broke free. “You said that the rain is cleansing?”
“I said that there are people who say that.” Curiosity flickered in L’s expression. “I don’t know anything about that myself.”
“Huh. Well, that’s--” Thunder cracked outside and  its echo covered over the second half of Light’s words. He cleared his throat and tried again. “That’s interesting. To think about, I mean.”
“Indeed.” L looked at Light, whose thoughts were tied up in ideas of rain and of touch. “I’m sure Light thinks about many interesting things.”
