[Johnlock] Interruption of corporal punishment

A johnlock short story, I use Chinese into English.

35 years old Watson x14 years old Sherlock

Sherlock's stomach is against the man's thigh, his head is hanging in the air, and he is lying on his stomach to accept the punishment, and his alpaca coat is wrapped around his small body. Sherlock's legs are still flapping around, which makes the doctor feel that he is lying on his legs.

Is it a cat or a rabbit... ? Watson begins to hate his own messy brain. Sherlock is only 14 years old. His development is a little slower than his peers, and he is always following his butt, which makes John feel like raising a child... Sherlock is the cutest kid he's ever seen, whether he's wearing a blue ice silk robe or a little black trench coat. Oh, and because Sherlock's little face looks smart, Watson doesn't recommend spending too much time with him on his days off.

The doctor rubs the wooden ruler in his hand and takes one look at Sherlock's small brown leather boots, which are half off. The top of the shoe is caught back by the ball of his foot. "Take it off." He points to where his boots are, even though Sherlock can't see them.

Who knows how many new clothes he has in his closet that Watson hasn't seen before? Sherlock loves to wear his little black trench coat when he's out and about, but because it's so skinny, that belt is just for display at home. MMHHHMMM... He's very good at dressing himself... Well, John actually used the very adult word "dressing up" as if in his heart he thought Sherlock was dressing up for John, a thought that made John sick.

"Don't." As Sherlock said this, he kicked his boots off. The leather boots tumbled a few times, and the metal cat decoration on the upper made a screeching sound when it hit the floor.

It's so cute that when Sherlock comes running up to him in his little leather boots, John automatically bends down to greet him, even though Sherlock doesn't like to yell like the other kids.

It's just... Sherlock tricked him... Having fooled all the doctors, he thought everyone was stupid, and John couldn't imagine what the child would do when he grew up.

"Oh, you came here and pretended to be an autistic child to gain my trust, and then what?" Watson picked up the wooden rule and slapped the boy's feet. Without a sound, he squeezed the doctor's thigh with his right hand. "Sherlock, you have an IQ higher than any other 14-year-old, and you chose to cheat a psychiatrist into the inpatient department, along with a surgeon? You did a good job."

John recalls the countless times he's half-crouched in front of Sherlock to read him a storybook, or driven the adorable (not cute yet!) kid around. Going for a ride in the suburbs, just to make him feel better.

"Autism?" The doctor pinched the report form and his jaw tensed. He couldn't believe it... Is that why Sherlock has never spoken?

"Grade 3 autism and major depression." As he silently read a few lines, the muscles in his thighs began to contract.

"I was so worried about you, and now you're telling me it's all fake?" As the doctor's breath grew hotter, he could not control his anger, which John hated most: deception.

People in social groups often choose simple lies to maintain relationships, but Sherlock, who can turn the most important part of the word into a lie, will he normally integrate into some normal relationships when he is an adult? The answer is no. Taking a step back, Sherlock's behavior is simply because he's... He despised no one, the other doctors, John, his brother Mycroft... He's just happy to play around with everyone and watch them laugh when they wake up. What will Sherlock become in the future? The worst thing is that his heart knows how to show the good side, his face is very beautiful, no one will refuse a beauty with high intelligence, this is... The problem.

Sherlock shuffled back and buried his face in the doctor's lap, his knees against the hard floor, his toes curled up in his socks, and his head rubbing against the doctor's thigh.

Acting coquettish? Wronged? Or what? In any case, John's face grew serious, and it was impossible to spoil him any longer.

"You've lied to me for so long, is it hard to say Sorry?" Dr. Watson felt his thighs start to get wet. "Are you crying? Sherlock, if you want to continue acting, I can only say that you've fooled me once again."

Sherlock's head starts to shake and the sobs become more pronounced. John tugs at the boy's hem and the man on his lap stops sobbing. "Okay, you stand up and tell me." The man said helplessly.

It's quiet, no sobbing, no clothes rubbing, and after five minutes, John suspects Sherlock has fainted.

"Sherlock!" John took the boy by the armpit and pulled him up. He saw that his pretty face was wet with tears, that his eyelashes were drooping, and that his lips were marked by teeth. Sherlock glanced up at John, and in no time, the boy was lunging toward the doctor, the soft flesh of his cheeks pressing against John's ribs.

Shouldn't Sherlock be the person most likely to say Sorry at this point?

“Sorry……… Sherlock……… I scared you, didn't I?" John held the boy closer and stroked his head. "Tell me what happened, will you?"

“John…… " Sherlock refuses to look up. His heart starts racing and his hands can't stop shaking. The boy remembers the conversations he heard in his hospital bed during the day: John... John…… They say John is going on a date ………… And... Sherlock isn't cheating. He didn't intentionally pass on those test results... Sherlock isn't lying!

Sherlock closes his eyes, tears squirting from under his lashes. He turns his head, not sure if he wants to be closer to John or further away. His heart is still beating faster. The fabric of Watson's jacket is pulled over Sherlock's nose, and his voice is slurred.

"You need to tell me what it is?" John mentioned the neckline on the back of Sherlock's neck, and suddenly he remembered Mrs. Hudson's cat, who always picked up the white cat like that.

"PFFF... Let go of me!" Sherlock rubbed tears into the doctor's chest, he pushed the doctor's hand, and sat on the corner of the bed by himself.

"You use... Ruler... Punish me with that!" The boy grabbed his pants leg and tears filled his eyes together. "John..."

John used to spend the whole weekend with Sherlock. Ever since he started dating... Sherlock will never see John again!

At first he thought he wasn't likeable enough because John's date... To be honest, they're pretty, and their hair looks smoother than Sherlock's, plus they're slender, not short like Sherlock, like a bantam cat... Sherlock wishes he could grow faster, so he starts eating more, but instead of making him taller, it's actually making his face rounder... J

Oh, my God, does anyone like a round bantam cat? At least John doesn't have Sherlock………… on his list

"I've decided to re-evaluate you." 'said the man suddenly.

"I don't need that..." He didn't want John to know he had anxiety problems, and Mycroft had him tested... Sherlock hates doctors' questions, so he chooses to disguise himself as having another medical condition.

"Just the two of us, okay?" Half kneeling on the floor, the doctor stroked the boy's shoulder with his right finger, and saw that the boy's eyes welled up again.

As John's brain starts to heat up, he remembers Sherlock's usual symptoms: a racing heart, insomnia, headaches, stomach aches... If his judgment is correct, this is the somatization of anxiety.

"... If it's just John and no one else..." He bowed his head, avoiding the doctor's eyes. "I can promise you that."

"Would you like to fill up your little belly before you begin?" John saw that the boy was in a better mood and couldn't help teasing him.

"I..." Sherlock doesn't want to be a bantam cat anymore anyway... But will the face become rounder?

The doctor squeezed the boy's face in his hand and took him back in his arms. "Trust me, everything will be fine."

Disagreeing with Dells being garbage. I’m from the town where Dell headquarters is located so all of the computers in my schools and at my jobs have been Dells, and they’ve all been able to take at least a few years of hard use by hundreds of kids who don’t know jack shit about taking care of a computer before they need any serious maintenance. My mom has an almost 20 year old Dell laptop that we used as the main family computer for 6 years (2004-2010) with no issue before she switched to Apple and can still turn on and connect to wi-fi. And my Alienware x14 is the best computer I’ve ever owned, heads and shoulders over my macs, acers, and HPs. Definitely agree that alienwares especially aren’t always worth their price tag but there are always deals running on builds that are about to get a new model and I got my 2022 model for $1000 because it was right before the 2023 dropped (and on comparison a lot of the main changes were cosmetic so I wasn’t compromising too much getting the 2022)

So You Need To Buy A Computer But You Don't Know What Specs Are Good These Days

Hi.

This is literally my job.

Lots of people are buying computers for school right now or are replacing computers as their five-year-old college laptop craps out so here's the standard specs you should be looking for in a (windows) computer purchase in August 2023.

PROCESSOR

Intel i5 (no older than 10th Gen)

Ryzen 7

You can get away with a Ryzen 5 but an intel i3 should be an absolute last resort. You want at least an intel i5 or a Ryzen 7 processor. The current generation of intel processors is 13, but anything 10 or newer is perfectly fine. DO NOT get a higher performance line with an older generation; a 13th gen i5 is better than an 8th gen i7. (Unfortunately I don't know enough about ryzens to tell you which generation is the earliest you should get, but staying within 3 generations is a good rule of thumb)

RAM

8GB absolute minimum

If you don't have at least 8GB RAM on a modern computer it's going to be very, very slow. Ideally you want a computer with at least 16GB, and it's a good idea to get a computer that will let you add or swap RAM down the line (nearly all desktops will let you do this, for laptops you need to check the specs for Memory and see how many slots there are and how many slots are available; laptops with soldered RAM cannot have the memory upgraded - this is common in very slim laptops)

STORAGE

256GB SSD

Computers mostly come with SSDs these days; SSDs are faster than HDDs but typically have lower storage for the same price. That being said: SSDs are coming down in price and if you're installing your own drive you can easily upgrade the size for a low cost. Unfortunately that doesn't do anything for you for the initial purchase.

A lot of cheaper laptops will have a 128GB SSD and, because a lot of stuff is stored in the cloud these days, that can be functional. I still recommend getting a bit more storage than that because it's nice if you can store your music and documents and photos on your device instead of on the cloud. You want to be able to access your files even if you don't have internet access.

But don't get a computer with a big HDD instead of getting a computer with a small SSD. The difference in speed is noticeable.

SCREEN (laptop specific)

Personally I find that touchscreens have a negative impact on battery life and are easier to fuck up than standard screens. They are also harder to replace if they get broken. I do not recommend getting a touch screen unless you absolutely have to.

A lot of college students especially tend to look for the biggest laptop screen possible; don't do that. It's a pain in the ass to carry a 17" laptop around campus and with the way that everything is so thin these days it's easier to damage a 17" screen than a 14" screen.

On the other end of that: laptops with 13" screens tend to be very slim devices that are glued shut and impossible to work on or upgrade.

Your best bet (for both functionality and price) is either a 14" or a 15.6" screen. If you absolutely positively need to have a 10-key keyboard on your laptop, get the 15.6". If you need something portable more than you need 10-key, get a 14"

FORM FACTOR (desktop specific)

If you purchase an all-in-one desktop computer I will begin manifesting in your house physically. All-in-ones take away every advantage desktops have in terms of upgradeability and maintenance; they are expensive and difficult to repair and usually not worth the cost of disassembling to upgrade.

There are about four standard sizes of desktop PC: All-in-One (the size of a monitor with no other footprint), Tower (Big! probably at least two feet long in two directions), Small Form Factor Tower (Very moderate - about the size of a large shoebox), and Mini/Micro/Tiny (Small! about the size of a small hardcover book).

If you are concerned about space you are much better off getting a MicroPC and a bracket to put it on your monitor than you are getting an all-in-one. This will be about a million percent easier to work on than an all-in-one and this way if your monitor dies your computer is still functional.

Small form factor towers and towers are the easiest to work on and upgrade; if you need a burly graphics card you need to get a full size tower, but for everything else a small form factor tower will be fine. Most of our business sales are SFF towers and MicroPCs, the only time we get something larger is if we have to put a $700 graphics card in it. SFF towers will accept small graphics cards and can handle upgrades to the power supply; MicroPCs can only have the RAM and SSD upgraded and don't have room for any other components or their own internal power supply.

WARRANTY

Most desktops come with either a 1 or 3 year warranty; either of these is fine and if you want to upgrade a 1 year to a 3 year that is also fine. I've generally found that if something is going to do a warranty failure on desktop it's going to do it the first year, so you don't get a hell of a lot of added mileage out of an extended warranty but it doesn't hurt and sometimes pays off to do a 3-year.

Laptops are a different story. Laptops mostly come with a 1-year warranty and what I recommend everyone does for every laptop that will allow it is to upgrade that to the longest warranty you can get with added drop/damage protection. The most common question our customers have about laptops is if we can replace a screen and the answer is usually "yes, but it's going to be expensive." If you're purchasing a low-end laptop, the parts and labor for replacing a screen can easily cost more than half the price of a new laptop. HOWEVER, the way that most screens get broken is by getting dropped. So if you have a warranty with drop protection, you just send that sucker back to the factory and they fix it for you.

So, if it is at all possible, check if the manufacturer of a laptop you're looking at has a warranty option with drop protection. Then, within 30 days (though ideally on the first day you get it) of owning your laptop, go to the manufacturer site, register your serial number, and upgrade the warranty. If you can't afford a 3-year upgrade at once set a reminder for yourself to annually renew. But get that drop protection, especially if you are a college student or if you've got kids.

And never, ever put pens or pencils on your laptop keyboard. I've seen people ruin thousand dollar, brand-new laptops that they can't afford to fix because they closed the screen on a ten cent pencil. Keep liquids away from them too.

LIFESPAN

There's a reasonable chance that any computer you buy today will still be able to turn on and run a program or two in ten years. That does not mean that it is "functional."

At my office we estimate that the functional lifespan of desktops is 5-7 years and the functional lifespan of laptops is 3-5 years. Laptops get more wear and tear than desktops and desktops are easier to upgrade to keep them running. At 5 years for desktops and 3 years for laptops you should look at upgrading the RAM in the device and possibly consider replacing the SSD with a new (possibly larger) model, because SSDs and HDDs don't last forever.

COST

This means that you should think of your computers as an annual investment rather than as a one-time purchase. It is more worthwhile to pay $700 for a laptop that will work well for five years than it is to pay $300 for a laptop that will be outdated and slow in one year (which is what will happen if you get an 8th gen i3 with 8GB RAM). If you are going to get a $300 laptop try to get specs as close as possible to the minimums I've laid out here.

If you have to compromise on these specs, the one that is least fixable is the processor. If you get a laptop with an i3 processor you aren't going to be able to upgrade it even if you can add more RAM or a bigger SSD. If you have to get lower specs in order to afford the device put your money into the processor and make sure that the computer has available slots for upgrade and that neither the RAM nor the SSD is soldered to the motherboard. (one easy way to check this is to search "[computer model] RAM upgrade" on youtube and see if anyone has made a video showing what the inside of the laptop looks like and how much effort it takes to replace parts)

Computers are expensive right now. This is frustrating, because historically consumer computer prices have been on a downward trend but since 2020 that trend has been all over the place. Desktop computers are quite expensive at the moment (August 2023) and decent laptops are extremely variably priced.

If you are looking for a decent, upgradeable laptop that will last you a few years, here are a couple of options that you can purchase in August 2023 that have good prices for their specs:

14" Lenovo - $670 - 11th-gen i5, 16GB RAM, and 512GB SSD

15.6" HP - $540 - 11th-gen i5, 16GB RAM, and 256GB SSD

14" Dell - $710 - 12th-gen i5, 16GB RAM, and 256GB SSD

If you are looking for a decent, affordable desktop that will last you a few years, here are a couple of options that you can purchase in August 2023 that have good prices for their specs:

SFF HP - $620 - 10th-gen i5, 16GB RAM, 1TB SSD

SFF Lenovo - $560 - Ryzen 7 5000 series, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD

Dell Tower - $800 - 10th-gen i7, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD

If I were going to buy any of these I'd probably get the HP laptop or the Dell Tower. The HP Laptop is actually a really good price for what it is.

TGIWednesday... My favorite day of the year!

I tell everyone my favorite day of the year is January 2nd and they always ask, “Oh is that your birthday?” and I’m thinking, nope, that’s when all this general chaos and extra fancy holiday anxiety will be over! LOL. Now I enjoy the holidays don’t get me wrong, but by about now, we’re all a little ugh, grrrr and paying for all that holiday cheer. My next-door neighbor is a Good Joe and highly efficient with everything having never been in the military. About 11am Christmas morning their Christmas tree, stripped clean of ornaments, tinsel, and lights, lay lifeless out on the curb for trash pickup! By contrast my military son, on the other hand, had four Christmas trees in his house and they’re probably still up and flashing lights 24/7 as you’re reading this. What’s the point? Find your groove, figure out what works for you and do what makes you happy NOW. Live like there is no tomorrow and one day you’ll be right. Ok, 2023 let’s do this and get moving! My friend and I have an interesting historical/paranormal excursion coming up this Saturday. We're taking self-tour of some local legendary historical and haunted locations I've been researching for some time...

THE POST BOY MURDER 1825:

Whoo boy, this is a good one - the story behind this alleged haunting is wild but it's 100% true!

There's so much more to this crazy story about the murder, and the trial and execution that followed, but here's a write-up from our local paper that will tell you enough:

The haunted part:

I've been researching this story for 3 years and by reading the court testimony and cross-referencing historical maps I've located almost every landmark mentioned in the witness accounts during the trial.

The entire length of Post Boy Road (red to red):

The key events and landmarks related to the murder that day stretch along the western half, in Post Boy Hollow:

We're going to retrace the key players' steps of that day leading up to, during, and immediately following the murder.

Also, just last week I FINALLY figured out exactly where both victim Cartmill's and killer Funston's gravesites are. They both were buried in old family plots that aren't marked on any maps and their locations aren't mentioned in detail anywhere. All I had to go on was that Cartmill was buried in the private Brown family farm plot "on the banks of the Tuscarawas", and that Funston was buried somewhere on or near his family's home - but there is no Funston name on any of the historical plat maps, so apparently they didn't actually own it, which really made things difficult. It took me 3 years of scouring local history on the internet for clues and comparing historical maps to figure them out. Funston is hidden away in the woods and Cartmill is in the front yard of a house a mile or so south of Stone Creek. We're going to visit those, too.

On a related note: The railroad that ran through the tiny whistle-stop known as Post Boy Station that popped up with its arrival in the 1850's didn't exist at the time Cartmill was killed, but during my research I kept seeing mentions of a nearby railroad tunnel near the hollow called Post Boy Tunnel, and people today posting photos of their visits to a tunnel alleged to be PBT. But the location of their tunnel wasn't making sense to me because look at this postcard:

It clearly says PBT was located south of Newcomerstown, and the one people have posted about isn't SOUTH of town, it's actually about 8 miles NORTHEAST by Stone Creek. Why would that be PBT? There's also no curve at SCT. There had to be another tunnel. So I started looking at Google Maps using terrain view to look for defunct track beds. The tracks are long gone and thick woods completely cover most of the area, but on terrain view you can still see the track beds. I followed the old track bed north from Post Boy Station and only a mile or so up, just south of town, you can see the tunnel, with a curve just outside the north end! I found the ACTUAL, totally-forgotten Post Boy Tunnel.

It's twice as long as Stone Creek Tunnel (about 1,000 ft. compared to SCT's 500-600 ft.) and completely hidden by thick forest. I'm sure the entrances have been filled in, but we're going to hike down from the ridge above and take a look in person.

BONUS - Post Boy Sasquatch?? 🤔

I wonder if she was at the real PBT or actually at Stone Creek like the others. I kind of think she had to be at the real one because SCT is right next to a busy county road, with the freeway nearby on the other side. If Bigfoot exists, he's got no cover there.

OLD STONE FORT:

There's a tiny little 14'x14' stone stone fort halfway between Newcomerstown and Coshocton that nobody knows the exact origin of. It's just been there for at least as long as the land it's on has been farmed. Maybe much longer, since the time when the whole state of Ohio was nothing but untamed wilderness. Some experts think it could be the oldest building in Ohio, dating as far back as the 1600's. Others are of the opinion that it's from the mid to late 1700's. But it's for sure ONE of the oldest. Whichever the case, it's a fascinating and mysterious little structure.

It sat abandoned for over a century and by the early 1900's the door had rotted away and roof had colĺapsed. The stone walls remained solid, though, and in 1953 it was restored by the Coshocton County Historical Society and designated a historical site.

We don't know of any reports of paranormal activity happening there, but it's a cool piece of local history and as good a place as any for an EVP sesh and to practice with our equipment and new investigation ideas for future G.H.O.S.T. team investigations.

HAUNTED WINDING STAIRS ROAD:

Just south of Port Washington, Ohio is a reportedly-haunted winding, narrow dirt road, about 2 miles long. Very creepy, being totally enveloped by thick woods for most of its length, and so treacherous in winter the county closes most of it off. There are a few homes on the very southern end where it hits a cross road - that section isn't ever closed down afaik but the other 4/5ths of it is just this:

People have reported strange, extremely-localized weather occurrences (heavy rainstorms when nothing was experienced in town just 1/2 mile north or any of the immediately-surrounding area). Occult/Satanic rituals were supposedly held in the woods along the road in the 70's and 80's. And "radios in vehicles traveling the road change stations on their own and cell phones ring to have either a demonic voice speaking or a high-pitched crackling. Strange furry creatures have also been reported to run in front of vehicles along the road."

HAUNTED CEMETERY:

Just across that crossroad at the south end of Winding Stairs is a very old, small cemetery surrounded by thick woods that's reportedly haunted. The township still mows the grass there but the gravestones are crumbling and it's isolated and otherwise basically forgotten except by us creepy-locale enthusiasts. People have mainly reported seeing black shadow figures rising up and wandering among the graves.

The one where... Mulder finds out what happened to Samantha. Part 2 of 2.

Tagline: Believe to Understand

Best: The scene in the restaurant in the middle of the night, Mulder quietly reading Samantha’s diary aloud. Scully’s hand over his. And then outside, looking up at the stars. Mulder: You know, I never stop to think... that the light is billions of years old by the time we see it. From the beginning of time right past us into the future. Nothing ancient in the universe. But maybe they are souls, Scully. Traveling through time as starlight, looking for homes. This scene is echoed in 8x14 This Is Not Happening when Scully tells Skinner that she hopes Mulder was right. The two scenes together really, really get me.

Worst: Look, the ghostly children are hokey AF and the music is not subtle, but it is effective at making me cry. Part of me appreciates that Mulder gets the chance to say goodbye to Samantha even as he discovers that he’s been wrong all of these years. That she was abducted not by aliens, but by men who experimented on her. And that she’s been dead since long before he began his quest to find the truth. Part of me appreciates that his journey has been to get to a place where he was ready to accept the truth, and to truly let go. Another part of me says WTF, this was what we waited 7 years to find out? That Samantha turned into starlight?! It feels like a cop out from the show. As Scully says: ... it’s foolproof, Mulder. Nobody is going to disprove it... He gives a comforting explanation... that everyone can live with but the fact is the bodies are still buried. That sums up what I feel about Samantha’s fate pretty well. It’s emotionally but not narratively satisfying. But given the choice I’ll always go for the emotionally satisfying ending (I’m one of those who actually liked the LOST finale, what can I say).

Why... was Amber Lynn La Pierre’s violent fate intervened by these walk-ins when the 24 other children’s were not? Why was Samantha spared when she was 14 and not 8? So many questions about these walk-ins, but there are no answers.

Omg Mulder’s 1989 hypnosis video hair...

It’s hard to believe Scully has never closely reviewed Samantha’s file. But she has respected Mulder’s desire to pursue Samantha’s case his own way for 7 years. It’s only when he expresses the need for it to just be over, even if that means she’s in one of those graves and she’s been dead this whole time, that she starts to look into Samantha’s case on her own.

I appreciate that Mulder is skeptical of Harold Piller, he’s intrigued but not blindly trusting.

Love Scully’s long leather jacket.

I can’t help but think that Mulder’s going to come down from his ghostly encounter high and want answers. Or revenge. But from the show’s perspective Samantha’s case is closed. The Syndicate is gone, seemingly except for CSM. And Mulder is able to move on.

I do appreciate that unlike many mytharc episodes this is a quiet episode, no big chases or shootouts. It’s about spirits trying to speak to their loved ones. And Mulder finally being ready to listen.

WIP and it’s been a long time since it was updated but as someone said in the comments on AO3 I’ll hold out hope of more. Not because it feels unfinished but because it’s so good. So many lines and moments struck me rereading this but especially Scully asking whether Samantha would have liked her and realizing from the way he answers that he’s thought about this a lot 💔

Book Sumary:

Zarifa Birch, an antique shop worker with an unusual past, has made a home for herself in the sleepy town of Lunewell. Though the shop she works at is not exactly ordinary, with cryptid items and odd occurrences, she has managed to carve the normal life she always desperately wished for out of it.

However, all that comes crumbling down, as a woman from Zarifa’s past throws everything into chaos. Faced with unimaginable horrors, seemingly unsolvable mysteries, and returning repressed feelings and memories, Zarifa along with her coworkers, must find a way to return the balance- and escape the cruel hands of death in this eldritch horror mystery.

Chapter 1:

Thorn’s Antiques and Restoration, tucked away in the tall trees that encircled the small town of Lunewell, wasn’t the place where one would expect a woman like Zarifa to work. The building was merely a converted two-story brick house, though even then the antique shop itself only operated on half of the ground floor and the basement, and the employees could consider themselves lucky if even so much as a single soul wandered in.

From an outsider’s perspective, it made no sense. Zarifa did not originate from Lunewell, had little to no interest in antiques, and had a Bachelor’s in English of all things, whose only tie with antiques was the pompous, ivory tower assholes pestering both fields. However, if said outsider were to ask Zarifa herself, or any other of the two working in the building, why she had this job, she would have said that it was the only path she could have ever imagined herself working.

Though even she had to admit, for as much as she loved her job, it could sometimes be… tedious.

Very tedious.

“How many crates of… art did we receive again?” Zarifa asked, white patched ebony fingers holding one of the many, many paintings of eerily realistic human eyes shoved haphazardly in a box. The crates had arrived this morning, heavy and worn, and were sitting in the off-white ‘employees lounge’, that only equated to a singular desk, a sofa, a microwave that never heated all the way through, and two uncomfortable plastic chairs.

“Only two,” Bruin responded, not bothering to look up from the wooden desk, where he had his nose buried deep in a black title-less book. Zarifa would have asked what he was reading, but stares through dark thin eyes and sighs had long taught her not to. “Bought in by an Anthony Bell earlier this morning.”

“Thank you,” Zarifa said, giving Bruin a warm smile that didn’t go noticed. She then turned to her other coworker, who had been sitting sheepishly on one of the back-destroying white chairs. “Why do we have two crates of creepy eye-paintings, again?”

“Okay there’s actually a good reason this time boss,” Grant said hastily, chestnut brown hair messy and glasses half sliding off his face, “I was taking a walk to that cosy little bakery- you know, the one owned by that very sweet elderly couple on the other side of town, which by the way makes cakes straight from the heavens-”

“So you were walking to the bakery, and then?” Zarifa interrupted.

“Oh right. I had walked a little ways from the house, when I saw a white van stopped up by the road with a man looking quite pissed off outside. I went up to have a chat with him and found out he was an absolutely fascinating art major named Anthony who had run out of petrol. To make a long story short, I invited him in for a cuppa whilst he waited on the towing truck, found out he was getting rid of these absolute gems, and bought them off him.”

Zarifa and Bruin, who had finally looked up from the pages, both stared at him. Bruin was the first to break the silence; “you bought antiques from an unverified source, in a van out of petrol, who you also invited inside my home for tea?”

“Hey! I pay the rent too!” Grant defended, “and besides, I got, you know, the feeling off him. There was already a description of the antiques inside the box, meaning they’ve been passed around a little. If you two don’t want them here, I can take them.”

“We can keep them,” Zarifa decided, looking at the realistic paintings once more. They were all extremely similar, each one having a blue iris and white pupils. As she moved around the box, it almost felt as though they were all following her movements. She shivered and put the lids back on; “I’ll carry this down. Grant, go open shop, and Bruin, go register these in the system, please.”

Grant gave her a mock salute, before trudging out of the door and into the shop room, whilst Bruin nodded and turned to the big, archaic box of a computer sitting on the desk. Zarifa stacked and grabbed the two worn crates, surprisingly light in her arms, and made her way to the spiral staircase. They were narrow, seemingly ever looping steps falling into darkness that made walking down them almost impossible. She had once tried to convince Valour to install some lights over the stairs, to reveal the actual length of them and to make sure Grant would stop tumbling down into the abyss, but she had only received a stern no and an icy glare that could kill.

So her only options were to walk down carefully, whilst gripping onto the wall for dear life, like she was currently doing. The stairs went on for what seemed like minutes, nothing in her sight as she was swallowed in complete darkness, with no way to judge her surroundings except her shoes hitting the steps. Finally, a flickering light made its way up the stairs, and she saw the start of grey concrete.

To say the archival basement was lit, was perhaps a bit of an overstatement. There was precisely one dim and occasionally flickering lamp in the room, slightly illuminating cobwebs glued to the walls and dusted shelves of antiquities, but not much else. However, the room was like a scorching desert sun compared to the void Zarifa had previously descended.

Making her way between the shelves, past the bag of hand-sewn doll-heads, slightly cracked vases, and mirrors so ladened in dust that one couldn’t see the distorted reflection anymore, she found a small group of paintings. Paintings were one of the rarer antiques for them to receive, so there was plenty of space for the two crates.

Before slotting them in, she opened them, quickly counting the amount. There were fourteen in total, seven in each box, all in a roughly similar condition and all painted in the same way. Oddly enough, there was no signature nor name, but there was a little slip of paper at the bottom. She picked it out of the crate, and stuffed it in the pocket of her blazer, before closing the lids again.

Zarifa slid the boxes between a painting of a single red rose titled ‘Chaos’, and a two-hundred-year-old painting titled ‘A Girl in Field’ containing a suspiciously girl-less field. There had been a debate on whether they were all just missing her, whether it was a mislabelled piece, or if it was supposed to be some kind of metaphor, but seeing as it was hardly the weirdest thing in the basement, they had all just grown to accept it. She shivered once again, the basement giving the feeling of being watched, and grabbed the golden butterfly that hung around her neck. She fiddled with the wings, every touch calming her slightly as she began making her way up the stairs.

The ascent up the spirals always seemed to take a considerably shorter time, perhaps because the imminent danger of falling had disappeared. Zarifa was up at the top in the blink of an eye, walking into the lounge to see both Bruin and Grant inside. Bruin turned to her from the computer; “‘Antique Eye-Painting x14’ has been written on the document,” he informed. “Did we have any other information?”

“I couldn’t find any signature or date on the painting itself,” Zarifa said, reaching into her blue blazer pocket and pulling the paper with a heavy brown tint out, “but there was a note accompanying it. The paper looks old enough to consider it an antique, at least.”

“Well, go ahead,” Grant piped up from the couch, “tell us about dear Anthony’s creepy eye pairings.” Zarifa nodded, unfolding the paper as carefully as she could, and began reading.

‘The Grey Man’ by Elizabeth B.- 1885

He is watching from the water. Watching with the trees.

Tick. Tock. Tick. Tock.

The Grey Man is knocking

“Grey Man?” questioned Zarifa, “that’s not a reference to anything, is it?”

“Not as far as I know,” Grant said, sitting up from where he had flopped on the couch, “help us out Bruiny?” She heard a sigh from the corner, and a slight grumble, but he did eventually speak.

“The Grey Man isn’t a reference to any historical event, no,” Bruin began, “but it isn’t something we haven’t heard before. I believe it’s referenced somewhere in Valour’s notes”

A heavy silence fell over them at the mention. “Oh no,” Grant began, “no, no, no. The weirdly detailed cult worshipping cows with inverting eyes was enough, and the murderous glare Valour gave me afterwards almost made me piss myself. I am not going through those notes again, I don’t want to be skinned alive by our own version of Leatherface.”

“That’s a bit far, isn’t it?” Zarifa said, “We shouldn’t go around accusing her of being a murderer, just because she’s a bit…”

“Mental?” Bruin quipped from the back.

“...peculiar,” she settled on, “she’s a bit peculiar.” Zarifa knew, of course, that calling Valour peculiar was a massive understatement- and even calling it a massive understatement was a massive understatement, but she would not be the one to speak ill about her boss with a potential murder streak thank-you-very-much.

“Need I remind you of that day Valour came covered head to toe in ‘red paint ’ that smelled suspiciously like copper?” Grant said, “she obviously did some serial-killering-“

“Killering?” Bruin asked with a cocked brow, turning Grant a salmon shade of pink and bringing a bright smile on Zarifa’s face that reached her dark brown eyes.

Grant made sounds akin to a drowning man. “It doesn’t matter,” he finally sputtered out, “what matters is that our dear creepy landlord was covered in what was clearly blood, passed it off as paint, and we just acted like it was normal!”

“I don’t like it either, but I’m not going to be the one to call her out. Besides, maybe it’s a good thing. At least the days here are... interesting.” Zarifa said with a smile. “If we stopped the weirder stuff from happening, these days would pass slower. Especially since we don’t have any custom-“

The sound of the bell that hung above the door, a loud and horrid thing, rang through the building.

“You were saying?” Bruin said, looking as amused as Bruin could be. Meanwhile, Grant shot up like a puppy, sprinting in an unprofessional manner towards the counter. Zarifa joined him, though her walk was much more slow and graceful.

She crossed through the shop door, which always stood wide open nowadays, and turned the corner. However, she stopped before she could reach Grant, who was staring at the stranger as much as she was.

Now, what needs to be said and understood about Thorn Antiques Shop, and the town of Lunewell in general, was that strangers were one of the rarest sights. Sure, occasionally one could find one of the neighbours’ relatives, or a gang of cyclists and hikers, and even tourists that had gotten hopelessly lost, which was impressive considering landing in Lunewell was a skill within itself, though these were few and far in between.

The customer, who was scanning through the shop with what Zarifa could almost call interest, didn’t look remotely like a relative, a hiker, a cyclist, or even a lost tourist.

She was short, with strawberry blonde hair tied into pigtails by two baby pink ribbons, pale but warm skin that made the light freckles on her cheek pop, and a stark black leather jacket which was visibly well-loved. There was something incredibly familiar about her, though Zarifa couldn’t pin down exactly what it was.

The customer’s fingers trailed over one of the antique chairs, before she sprawled over the priceless thing like a rag-doll. The violation snapped Zarifa out of her trance; “Excuse me, miss, but you can’t sit in those chairs!” she informed the customer, her voice raising a pitch higher when the blonde started fiddling with a lighter suspiciously close to the fabric.

The customer’s head snapped up like a predator hearing prey, and for the first time, Zarifa noticed the woman’s eyes. The irises were a bombastic explosion made of hues of bright green, though it was almost impossible to tell from a first glance, as the pupils were blown so wide as to make the colour but a ring around a black hole.

There was both something incredibly dangerous about the way she stalked over, sizing her up with those void eyes, but simultaneously, something incredibly intriguing- dare she say attractive- about the girl that made Zarifa want to keep her eyes on her forever.

“Waste of a good chair, really,” the customer began, leaning over the counter, “what the fuck kind of shop doesn’t allow you to test the chair before you get it?”

“I know!” Grant exclaimed, turning to the dark-skinned woman. “That’s what I keep saying! How can I know if the chair is good if I’ve never tried it!”

Zarifa shot a disapproving look at him, irritated that he would encourage this girl. “What can we help you with, miss?”

“Oooh, miss.” the woman drawled, “I’m looking for a collection of very… special papers that I left in the hands of one Valour Thorn a few years back.”

“Special?” Grant asked, a look of confusion passing over his face. Zarifa was sure she mirrored the same puzzlement, but the woman merely grinned- an expression that yet again invoked that familiar feeling.

After a few seconds had passed, and it had been made clear that she would not elaborate, Zarifa grabbed the notepad and pen on the counter and asked for her name. Maybe she was registered somewhere in the frankly ancient system. Assuming they even had a sort of registering system. She had never been the one to handle the technical aspects.

“Lottie. Lottie Rose,” she said, and Zarifa’s hand froze on the paper. She glanced back up at the blonde, eyes wide and mouth dry. Of course, how hadn’t she seen it earlier? The clothes, the eyes, the lighter everything suddenly made more sense as her memory flooded back.

“Lottie?” she whispered, faint as the whispers of a breeze, and there must have been something in her tone, because the striking green eyes widened comically, before the blonde suddenly burst out into a tension filled laugh.

“Should’ve guessed it,” Lottie said after calming down, “can’t be that many Southern old-book nerds with vitiligo around. You should get name tags, I would have recognised Zarifa anywhere.”

Her name was said in a smaller tone, filled with… with something that melted Zarifa’s insides like molten lava. They stood there in silent pressure, eyes on each other but gazes not quite meeting. It was for the better, as Zarifa’s heart was hammering hard enough that she was worried her ribcage might break. Whether it was from fear or something much scarier, she couldn’t quite tell.

Grant snapped his fingers, both of them practically sighing in relief as the tension lifted; “Oh”, he began, smiling widely, "exes or childhood friends?” And just like that, the tension was back to crushing.

While Zarifa wasn’t quite sure of the state of her own face, Lottie had gone a complete shade of tomato red. “We’re neither,” Zarifa squeaked out curtly, Lottie nodding frantically along. “Can you give me a description of the papers?”

Lottie straightened out at the request. “Can’t miss them. They’re in an ornate wooden and gold box, with a leaf engraved in the front,” she said, “it’s locked, as far as I know. Don’t know where the key is, but that’s hardly a problem.” She made yet another predatory smirk.

“I-I’ll go look for the papers, uh, in the back... miss,” she pushed herself from the counter at an almost inhuman speed and paced into the lounge. On her way, she bumped into one of the chairs, toppling both herself and the object. The sound alerted Bruin, who looked at her quizzically.

“Was she your ex?”

“No!” Zarifa exclaimed exasperatedly, “Not every woman I know is an ex!”

“No need to get defensive,” Bruin said, flipping a page, “I was just wondering if Grant’s observations were correct.”

Zarifa took a deep breath. “Sorry about that. I suppose her visit just… surprised me.” she straightened the chair, and looked at Bruin, “You haven’t seen a wooden and gold box engraved with leaves around here, have you? I can’t recall it, but you’re usually the one sorting the items, so I figured you might have seen it.”

Bruin hummed, putting down his book and looking pensively at her. “I might have,” he said, after a quiet moment, “though if we do- or did, at any point, it’s not anywhere in the basement.” He glanced up at the ceiling, before returning to the book.

“I suppose it’ll be upstairs, then,” Zarifa said, with a heavy sigh, “I’ll make Grant call Valour, see if she can bother to show up from… wherever she’s gone.” And try to explain to Lottie that those papers might be inaccessible, she thought, but didn’t add. Lottie was a lot of things, but patient and calm, she was not.

As she made her way back to the counter, gripping the golden butterfly hung on her neck tightly, she tried to calm her heart and thoughts. A part of her still refused to believe Lottie was here, after all these years, in an antique shop of all places. It almost felt taunting, in an odd way. The life Zarifa had tried so hard to run from and avoid sneaking through the door, looking more dangerous and simultaneously more intriguing than ever.

What life had Lottie led? What had happened since that last night? How did she know Valour? What did she want with the papers? All the questions buried themselves into Zarifa’s head, burning and begging for answers. And as Lottie, drumming her fingers on the counter as Grant rambled off about something, came into view, she realised what Eve must have felt like looking at the apple.

Lottie perked up as Zarifa entered the room, though as her eyes drifted to the empty hands, her smile fell. “Thought I asked for a box,” she said, a raised eyebrow and mean glare that would have been intimidating, had Zarifa not had to deal with years of Valour, and not known that for her, Lottie was all growl.

“We do, most likely, have the box,” Zarifa began in her most soothing voice, placing her hands on the counter, “but, it’s currently upstairs, in Valour Thorn’s flat, to which none of us has the keys.”

Lottie sighed, in an exasperated and slightly overdramatic way; “‘Course you fucking don’t. Guess she hasn’t changed at all, still closed off, disappearing, and secretive.”

Pot meet kettle, thought Zarifa, though kept her cranberry painted lips sealed. “Grant will give her a call in the morning,” Zarifa said, pushing over a blank slip of paper which had Lottie R- half-written on it in quite nice penmanship. “Just write down your number, and we’ll call you when she arrives.”

Lottie pulled the paper closer to herself, though made no move to write. “Think she’ll even show up?” she asked, turning to Grant, who smiled at that.

“Valour actually seems to like me,” he said, proudly, “or, tolerate, at least.”

“Huh. Didn’t know people still practised witchcraft around this part.”

“It’s all in my muffins, cakes, and pitiable nature,” Grant said, only half-joking, “I’ll give you a taste one time if you decide to stick around.”

Lottie nodded, before scribbling onto the paper, and sliding it back. It contained no number, but the name had been completed, albeit with a much sloppier if artistic handwriting. “I’ll know when she returns,” Lottie said, bouncing from foot to foot. There was a firmness in her voice, and she said it with such confidence that Zarifa almost believed her. Almost. “How’s the nightlife here? Worth sticking around for?”

“Horrid, simply dreadful,” Grant butted in, before Zarifa had the chance to give a quick answer and an even quicker goodbye, “but we do have a lot of pretty places to take a midnight stroll. Trees are lovely here, especially now in the autumn.” He paused, a contemplative look over his face, “Come to think of it, I do know quite a lot of dealers around here that can hook you up, if you’re up for it.”

“Grant!”

Lottie chuckled, amusement painted in neon on her face. Seeing some of that flame inside her come to light filled Zarifa with a sense of joy, that she pushed down with a strength bodybuilders would be jealous of.

“Oh, I like him,” Lottie declared to Zarifs, jabbing a finger in Grant’s general direction. Her green eyes- which Zarifa had to stop looking at, traced down from Zarifa’s own eyes before landing on her neck. Lottie’s posture, previously energetic and bouncy, froze. “You kept the necklace,” she whispered, though the sound felt louder than all the explosions of the universe.

Zarifa’s hand was instantaneously on the golden butterfly hanging around her neck, shielding it from the world. The metal felt cool against her skin, even if she could feel her racing heart where her hand rested. “Felt it was a shame to let it go to waste,” Zarifa murmured, technically true, “so I just kept it.” She shifted in the silence for a while, doing her best to ignore Lottie’s eyes glued to the necklace, before clearing her throat and putting on her best ‘professional’ tone; “Was there anything else you needed?”

Lottie shook her head, leaning back from the counter and adjusting her leather jacket. “No, I’ll be back soon,” she said, before speeding towards the door. She knocked into the vases, making them wobble like jelly, before pushing the door open like she was assaulting it, and leaving nothing but the sound of a bell and the distant thrum of a motorbike.

“Lottie, huh,” Grant said, his tone dazed as though he was lost in a daydream, “she was certainly interesting. I’m a fan. Think we’ll see her around more?”

“Hopefully not,” Zarifa said, running fingers over the butterfly, “hopefully not.”

x1 How often are you optimistic? I’m such a pessimist.

x2 Would you say your thoughts are generally rational and logical or irrational and illogical? I think I’m logical a lot of the time. I worry and overanalyze everything and know I come off negative and pessimistic, and I am, but also I think there’s a lot of times where I’m just being real and logical and that can be hard to hear for some people. I can also admit there are things I’m irrational and illogical about as well and jump to worse case scenarios without really thinking about things first or listening to the advice of others. I’m very stubborn.

x3 Tell an interesting fact about your favorite country? Sweden is home to Alexander Skarsgard, aka my love. That’s very interesting, I know.

x4 Are you wearing anything of any sentimental value? Describe? No.

x5 Are you the type to pay attention to detail? Yes.

x6 To you, what is especially distracting? I feel like I get distracted more easily these days. Like, I get sensory overload.

x7 What are some things that are important in your life right now? My faith, my family, my health.

x8 When was the last time you did some major cleaning? I haven’t in awhile. I haven’t been able to.

x9 Have you ever thrown anything away, and regretted it later? Yes. I have a hard time getting rid of stuff as it is.

x1o Are you the type to regret things, or live and learn? I have many regrets. :/

x11 How often do you feel like you need time to yourself? A lot. It’s better for those around me, too, cause I’m extra moody and irritable nowadays.

x12 Do you like being around other people? Why is this? I like spending time with my family.

x13 Do you feel like anyone "gets" you? Who? In some ways, but not completely. I don’t even get me.

x14 What would you be most likely to do with a friend, today? I don’t have friends.

x16 How about upbeat and cheerful? It’s been a long time since I’ve felt that. No one would describe me as such right now that’s for sure.

x19 What was the last opportunity that you passed up, and why? Hmm. I don’t recall.

x2o Would you rather have a quiet day at home, or be on the go? I’m a hermit crab and don’t have the energy to be on the go. I’m also pretty much bedridden for the time being.

x22 How do you feel about people who neglect their pets? It angers me and makes me upset.

x23 Should there be an application process for having children? Uhhh.

x24 Are you able to ask for help when you need it? Sometimes. I just don’t like having to ask for a lot of help. Especially these days when I’m having to be really dependent on others for a lot of things. It’s frustrating not being able to do things you used to do. Some of it being what should be simple tasks.

x25 How intense is your anger? Have you ever hurt anyone/yourself? It takes a lot to make me angry. No, I’ve never hurt anyone or had the desire to do so.

x26 What is something red that you like to eat? Marinara sauce.

x27 Do you ever have trouble getting lighters to work? I don’t mess with lighters.

x28 If someone drinks, would that lower your opinion of that person? No.

x29 What if they did drugs? I would have an opinion about it if they did hardcore drugs. I wouldn’t think lower of them unless they were being completely reckless and doing things that were harmful. Like when I hear of a pregnant woman shooting up heroin still and having total disregard for their unborn child.

x3o Do you know anyone who is abusive? Are you abusive? No.

x31 Have you ever contemplated cheating on anyone? No.

x32 If your best friend wanted to cheat on his/her partner, you would say? My best friend is my mom, who is with my dad, so I’d definitely have something to say about that.

x33 Who do you know that gives very sound advice? My mom.

x34 What do you think makes a person weak? I feel like I’m a weak person physically and emotionally, but I’m a lot more understanding of others and give more grace to others than myself. I wouldn’t think someone else in my position was weak, but I can’t say the same for myself.

x35 What makes a person strong? A lot of things.

x37 Name one thing that you think defines you as a person? Uhhh.

x38 Who do you go to when you need comfort? If I go to anyone, it’s my mom.

x39 Is there anyone/anything with whom/which you like to cuddle? My doggo.

x41 At what age did you start to feel like a teen, and not a kid anymore? When I started high school.

x42 Are you or were you in a hurry to grow up? No. I never understood why everyone else seemed to be in such a rush.

x43 What is a fear you have about living on your own? Being on my own. I am perfectly content with still living at home with my family.
