i played TLOU recently and had mixed feelings on it, though all-in-all i feel like it was a solid game

as far as the gameplay went, it felt like it was trying really hard to appeal to 2 COMPLETELY different groups of people -- capital G gamers who like shooters, and people who are here to play games just to enjoy stories and loot/craft. the game would just switch back and forth between these like clockwork. 

as a person who falls in the second category, i found it Really Annoying. just as i was settling in to enjoy an exploring/crafting/story bit, i would see a bunch of bottles or bricks lying around, and go “aw goddammit now i gotta shoot at things.” i enjoyed fighting the zombies when they were spread out and you were supposed to get through them by majority sneaking / using things you’d just crafted. but any time i had to fight soldiers/hunters/scavengers felt like i was just gritting my teeth and getting through it as quickly as i could. and the times that they threw a BUNCH of them at you with very little chance to hide and sneak? really Not Fun IMO. 

i kind of wish that they had set the game up with two different playmodes -- one where it’s more about Being Good At Video Games, and one where you’re just here to have fun. they let the Gamers skip the cutscenes. why not let me skip certain shooting parts!! i wouldn’t even skip all of them, just a handful that felt like they were a waste of time when i could be doing something more interesting. 

that being said, i REALLY enjoyed the parts of the game where i was wandering around looting and crafting. finding notes, finding pendants and comics, putting together nail bombs that i could strategically place later -- it was all really fun. 

as far as the story went... all in all, i thought that the story was solid. 

i have some level of fatigue with the whole post-apocalyptic “everyone is out to get each other, the dregs of humanity are mostly super fucked-up morality-wise, and you’re going to have to mow down hundreds in order to Be One Of The Good Ones.” maybe i would have felt differently if i had played this game back in 2013. but after TWD and every other post-apocalyptic story that’s come out in the last ten years, it feels EXTREMELY overplayed. and it felt completely bizarre to be shooting Real Live Human Beings by the dozen when the virus had already wiped out so much of humanity. 

but putting that aside, i had a lot of fun with the characters that were set in front of me. all of them felt fleshed-out and interesting. i ADORED ellie and joel by about 2 hours into the game. they did a really fantastic job of cultivating the bond between them, making it realistic in a life-or-death situation, and providing interesting character development for each of them. they also just did a fantastic job with the dialogue and the voice acting. 

that went for the side characters, too -- i REALLY liked sam and henry and marlene. unfortunately, really did Not like what they did with them. the uhhhh race thing was something that really stuck with me, in a bad way. it felt like the game was Trying to be diverse, but when they keep murdering off the black characters it Doesn’t Look Great. i knew that they were going to do that with Sam and Henry specifically from the moment they showed up, and kept catching myself hoping that the two of them would just run off at some point so i could pretend they were okay. i wish the game had been a little more self-aware about the tropes they were stepping into, and had ALSO been more genre-savvy to keep me guessing about the fates of everyone. 

the twist with Joel NOT being dead did catch me off-guard, however. i thought it was a really good move! and having ellie consistently get herself out of her OWN situations, and save joel just as much as he saved her, was really good writing IMO. i cared about her So Damn Much by the end of that game. 

i feel like the ending was..... mmm.... rough, but not necessarily bad? i wish that they had gone out on a slightly different note. choosing to save ellie at the expense of a potential vaccine was a good choice, but i wish they had emphasized The Themes of the game more. like accepting the past and moving forward with it, rather than ignoring it. or like creating connections being essential in life, even life as hard and messed-up as this. something a little more concrete, maybe.

anyways, that’s all! i probably would have liked it a bit better if i wasn’t godawful at shooters. overall thought it was a solid game -- felt like a book i couldn’t put down when the story was progressing. i would die 4 ellie.

ik this is FAR from being a new development, but how do you handle all the grown adults screaming in the comments at fictional teenage cats?? sometimes I forget how bad it is and then a dramatic arc starts and suddenly everyone's taking the characters' actions personally as if the cast is reading the comments after each page is posted lmao. and then they demonize the shit out of the cast for not being perfect, like...??? does it take a toll on you or are you just used to it at this point? :(

Oliver: As community moderators we want to keep things welcoming and inclusive of divergent viewpoints when feelings get intense.

This is often at odds with the way people behave — tribes emerge, memes are deployed, and all of a sudden you’re reading every page with “Mike is awful” or “Lucy is awful” glasses, loudly proclaiming how objectively correct you are, forming bonds with your compatriots and rallying against the dissenters. Making good friends! But scaring off everyone else as you do so.

And various troublesome habits can spice it up and make it even harder to maintain a healthy space — personal experiences can make for extreme opinions that are basically unassailable without demeaning the person sharing them, therapyspeak can lend unwarranted scientific certainty to the diagnosis of this or that Bad Teenager, etc and etc.

It seems that the more time people connect with each other, the more likely people are to take sides and stop listening to others. I think the Patreon commenters are pretty good. But on Facebook and on Discord, battle lines are drawn and people start to lose that spirit of generosity and openness to others that I think makes for a good community. It’s hard and we need to do better shaping those discussions.

As authors following public reactions, it’s easy to say “wow, it’s great that people are going apeshit!! Shows they really care!” but there’s a fair bit more to it than that.

Bittersweet Candy Bowl isn’t supposed to be a black-and-white morality tale where there’s a Designated Bad One To Hate, so it does feel like a bit of a storytelling failure when a bunch of readers can’t connect with a character who's intended to be multifaceted and relatable. In some sense, extreme opinions can hurt, and it makes you think “oh, did we fuck this one up?”

So the hope is that people who have demonised a character will eventually come around. They’re just emotional. Consumed in the moment. Or maybe not a good fit for a story like this? There’s a few spicier alternatives I also keep in mind, too, but it starts to sound infantilising to air those out, I guess. But in the end, we gauge how we’re doing by hearing from those who engage with the story thoughtfully. And who like the sort of stories we like.

And as a simple comic reader, someone who loves the characters and likes talking about them... well, it's just fun that so many takes are out there, isn't it? I like reading people flesh out interpretations that align with mine. I like reading challenges from people who have different takes and seeing if they give me reason to rethink things. The intensity of it all doesn't matter to me so much as the volume of thoughtful, considered commentary. And for BCB, there's a lot!

Veronica: My basic stance when it comes to this is that you’re allowed to hate a character.. you’re allowed to hate them a lot, in fact! But it gets out of hand when you hate a character so much that you’re judgemental about other readers who don’t hate that character, and use words to imply there is something morally bad about those people. That’s when it becomes less analysing characters in a comic to personally attacking other readers.

“Mike has been horrible to Lucy and that’s why I hate him” is different from “Mike has been horrible to Lucy and that’s why I side-eye the people who relate to him..”, this is made even worse when words like “abuser” and “manipulator” are used. You don’t know the other readers! You don’t know their history! You don’t know why they might empathise with Mike!

At the end of the day, BCB doesn’t have villains. Mike doesn’t make mistakes because it’s his life goal to hurt Lucy, but that being said, you’re allowed to hate him! That’s not what the issue is! Just be mindful of who you might be targeting when it comes to implying there’s something wrong with you if you even have a semblance of empathy for Mike, and that goes for any other controversial character.

Can I have two Health Insurance Policies from different states?

Before you answer, please read this thoroughly. I am a student and Illinois Resident. I have PPO health insurance in Illinois that I pay out of pocket for. $1000 deductible, 100% covered. I go to school in Florida and have employer insurance in FL (ever since Sept 2008), but it's an HMO. The PPO my job offers has no deductible but is 80/20 coverage, so I opted the HMO. For the average person, it would make no sense to have 2 policies, but I'm not ordinary. I have many pre-existing conditions (some I was born with), hence the Illinois coverage. In Dec of last year, before my FL insurance kicked in, I had a multitude of issues which caused me to have to use my BCBS of IL in Florida where I'm attending school. Many of those things are at bay now, but for doctor visits, exams, etc to arise other than routine check ups, should I start using my FL HMO insurance and just use my IL insurance for when I visit home during breaks? Or should I just drop my FL insurance altogether? The reason this is an issue is b/c I am afraid I my rates will go up or they drop me if I continue to use my insurance which was meant to be for IL, but I have been using it in another state. Yes they will cover b/c it's PPO and it falls under the BCBS umbrella, but this is the risk I take. Hello everyone, I am an international student who's been in the USA (Buffalo, NY) for the past 2 years working hard on my masters (i'm 25 now). I bought a POS Saturn last year for 2000 dollars and, well, for that i needed to get car insurance since it's mandatory in this country. Since i was from abroad and i had a learner's permit at the time, i had to get insurance with my international license. Progressive was my only choice so i paid around 700$ for 6 months. That's the rate I've been paying for the last year. Unfortunately, i just don't have the money anymore to pay 700 more dollars for the next 6 months. I tried different insurance companies but they are all around the same range. Apparently, i was stupid enough to not get a credit card as soon as i landed in this country. I was raised with the if you don't have money, don't spend it philosophy so i just used my debit card. This is the only reason that i can see for these absurd rates. Every single one of my friends ( all international students ) pay around 200-250/six months dollars for their pieces of crap cars. I just feel like i'm not being given a fair deal. Not having any credit might put a penalty on me, i understand somewhat how a capitalist mind works... let's say about 100-150 more dollars for 6 months, but a whopping 500 $ ? Don't you think it's kind of messed up that first of all it's mandatory, and then there's no baseline to at least make sure that noone gets ripped off. What if I decided to ride my bike instead or what if I will be out of country for 2 months and want to save 200 Dollars and cancel the insurance? How do they define lapse ? I heard even when you don't own a car you will be considered to have a lapse in insurance and you pay more money even when you did not touch your car or didn't even have one.... that dosen't make any sense to me!

I want to run a one vehicle WAV (wheel chair accessible vehicle for disabled people) car hire/rental business serving Hertfordshire the customer would hire the car and arrange for a person to drive it for them. On the odd occasion the hirer does not have anybody to drive the car for them they might want me to drive for them I have been told to do this I would need a private vehicle hire licence (mini cab drivers licence) also hire and reward insurance along with a mini cab office operators licence and the vehicle would need to be plated (tested) This is not a problem except for the hire and reward insurance which would be about 3000 per year and would not be cost effective for the amount of driving I would be doing (I would probably only be driving a customer 1 day per week). Does anybody know of a company that will insure me daily on hire and reward insurance?

I'm 20 years old and have a valid UK driver's lisence. As I am now living in California, I was given a 'California Temporary Driver's License'. This expired yesterday but I have my behind the wheel test on Monday (12/7/09). Is this expiration going to be an issue? A Map That Shows You Everything Wrong With Your Brain

The woman who would be mapping my brain, Cynthia Kerson, had tanned, toned arms and long silvery hair worn loose. Her home office featured an elegant calligraphy sign reading “BREATHE,” and also a mug that said “I HAVE THE PATIENCE OF A SAINT—SAINT CUNTY MCFUCKOFF.”

Kerson is a neurotherapist, which means she practices a form of alternative therapy that involves stimulating brain waves until they reach a specific frequency. Neurotherapy has a questionable reputation, which its practitioners sometimes try to counter by putting as many acronyms next to their names as possible. Kerson comes with a Ph.D., QEEGD, BCN, and BCB. She’s also past president of the Biofeedback Society of California and teaches at Saybrook University. Even so, somehow it was the tension between those two pieces of office ephemera that made me instinctively want to trust her.

Kerson used to have a clinic in Marin County, where she primarily saw children with ADHD, using neurotherapy techniques to help them learn to focus. But she also worked with elite athletes who wanted to improve their performance, as well as people suffering from chronic pain and anxiety and schizophrenia and a host of other disorders. These days, she’s so busy teaching and consulting that she no longer runs her individual practice, but she agreed to bring out her brain-mapping equipment for me: snug-fitting cloth caps in various sizes; a tube of Electrogel, a conductive goo; a black box made by BrainMaster Technologies that would receive my brain’s signals and spit them out into her computer.

I’m the kind of person who procrastinates with personality tests; I’m susceptible to the way they target that place where self-loathing and narcissism overlap. I suppose it stems from the feeling that there is something uniquely and specially wrong with me, and wanting to know all about it.

So I’ll admit that I was thinking of this brain map in overly fanciful terms: It would be like a personality test but scientific. I kept thinking about this line I’d read in a book by Paul Swingle, a Canadian psychoneurophysiologist who uses brain maps to identify neurological abnormalities: “The brain tells us everything.”

Kerson placed the cap on my head and clipped two sensors on to my earlobes, areas of no electrical activity, to act as baselines. As she began Electrogelling the 19 spots on my head that aligned with the cap’s electrodes, I was nervous in two different directions: one, that my brain would be revealed as suboptimal, underfunctioning, deficient. The other, that it would be fine, average, unremarkable.

EEG tests, which measure electrical signals in the brain, have been used for decades by physicians to look for anomalies in brain-wave patterns that might indicate stroke or traumatic brain injury. The kind of brain map I was getting used a neuroimaging technique formally known as quantitative electroencephalogram, or qEEG. It follows the same general principle as EEG tests, but adds a quantitative element: Kerson would compare my brain waves against a database of conventionally functioning, or “neurotypical,” brains. Theoretically, this allows clinicians to pick up on more subtle deviations—brain-wave forms that are associated with cognitive inflexibility, say, or impulsivity.

In neurotherapy, qEEGs are generally a precursor to treatments like neurofeedback or deep brain stimulation, which are used to alter brain waves, or to train people to change their own. Neurotherapy claims it can tackle persistent depression or PTSD or anger issues without resorting to talk therapy or pharmaceutical interventions, by addressing the very neural oscillations that underlie these problems. If you see your brain function in real time, the idea goes, you can trace mental-health issues to their physiological roots—and make direct interventions.

But critics argue that neurotherapy’s treatments—which might take dozens of sessions, each costing hundreds of dollars—have very little research backing them up. And although the mainstream medical community is starting to pay closer attention to the field, particularly in Europe, in the U.S. neurotherapy is still largely unregulated, with practitioners of varying levels of expertise offering treatments in outpatient clinics. At the most basic level, not everyone who’s invested in the technology that allows them to do qEEG testing is able to correctly interpret the resulting brain map. Certification to administer a qEEG test—a process overseen by the International qEEG Certification Board—requires only 24 hours of training, five supervised evaluations, and an exam, with no prior medical experience.

As Jay Gunkelman, an EEG expert and past president of the International Society for Neurofeedback and Research, puts it: “It’s a Wild West, buyer-beware situation out there.”

All this is to say that while skilled interpreters can pick up all sorts of information from an EEG, these tests are also “ripe for overstatement,” according to Michelle Harris-Love, a neuroscientist at Georgetown’s Center for Brain Plasticity and Recovery. That’s worrisome since, in recent years, EEG technology has gotten cheaper and more widely available. A qEEG brain map can cost as little as a few hundred dollars, which means more people are taking a peek at their brain waves, not just for diagnostic purposes, but also with optimization in mind.

“People will come in for optimal training,” Kerson told me as she adjusted the sensors in my cap. “But what often happens is we’ll find something a little pathological. Which I guess depends on your definition of pathological.”

NeuroAgility, an “attention and performance psychology” clinic in Boulder, Colorado, for instance, brainmaps CEOs and then uses neurotherapy to help them “come from a place of action, rather than reaction.” Other clinics promise to use the technology to help athletes and actors get in the zone, as Kerson did in her private practice. “There are business executives who want to reduce their obsessive-compulsive traits, or athletes who want to tune up their engines,” Gunkelman told me. “At Daytona, they’re all fabulous cars, but every single one of them gets a tune up three times a day. No matter who you are, if you look at brain activity, there are things we can do to get you to function better.”

For the first five minutes my brain was being mapped, I sat with my eyes closed. My mind felt unquiet; I was thinking about what it felt like to have a brain, trying to describe to myself the feeling of having thoughts. “Your eyes are moving around a lot underneath your lids,” Kerson said. She suggested I put my fingertips on my eyelids to keep my eyes from shifting. I sat like the see-no-evil monkey for the rest of the test, trying to remain thoughtless and keep my jumpy eyes still.

When the first half of the test was done, I spied my brain waves on Kerson’s computer screen: 19 thin, wobbly gray lines stretching across a white background. My brain activity looked like an Agnes Martin painting. Kerson had me turn the chair around for the second, eyes-open half, in case watching the real-time brain waves made me self-conscious. Her software program chimed out a warning every time I blinked, which turned out to be a lot. “I’m going to turn off the sound so you don’t get frustrated,” Kerson said.

When we were done, she scrolled through the 10 minutes of brain waves. Two of the lines looked alarming—every few seconds they jolted all over the place, like some sort of seismic indication of an internal earthquake. Kerson told me not to worry; the EEG also picks up on muscle movements, and those were my blinks.

“So there’s one thing I see right off the bat,” she said. “We’d expect to see more alpha when you close your eyes. But it actually looks pretty similar whether your eyes are open or closed. That tells me that you might not sleep well, you might have some anxiety, you might be overly sensitive—your brain talks to itself a lot. You can’t quiet yourself.” This was all accurate, if not news to me.

Kerson continued to scan through the test, selecting sections that weren’t compromised by my blinks, trying to gather enough clean data to match against the database. She ran the four good minutes through the program, which spat out an analysis of my brain waves that looked something like a heat map, with areas of relative over- and under-functioning indicated by patches of color. By most measures, my brain appeared a moderate, statistically insignificant green. “You’re neurotypical,” she said, sounding minorly disappointed.

Kerson nonetheless recommended vitamins to beef up my neural connections, since my amplitudes were a little lackluster. “Meditating would be good for you, but you’re going to need something else for meditation to work,” she told me, noting that I should consider some alpha training, which would involve putting on headphones to listen to sounds that would get my brain waves into the right frequency. I should also probably change out my contacts if I was blinking that much.

Kerson began folding up the electrode-studded cap, and I realized with a slight feeling of deflation that that was it. “It was nice to meet you,” she called out as I pulled out of her driveway. “And it was nice to meet your brain!”

idk if i should put this in the tag or not............idk, people will find it maybe, if they dont that may be for the best LOL

im gonna pull the constructive part out of the complaining so if all ur looking for is that, here:

- I’d like there to be more work done to keep people on-topic in the channels - Should really be separate channels for BCB-specific art and general art - Having a channel or a set of channels that’re for Adults to talk about the comic would be great (obviously no nsfw talk, but more mature themes are able to be discussed like mental illness, sexual harassment / assault, abuse, etc)

i finally left the bcb discord today because Jesus Christ there is literally NO channel where people don’t spam shit i dont care about

started out following Every BCB-related channel, that turned out to be way too cluttered so i muted everything but the two bcb discussions channels, the bulletin channel, and the art channel

but people FREQUENTLY go off-topic in the bcb discussion channels. and also are like, weirdly inflammatory about what they say? honestly it just seems like a lot of people in the discord are Really Young, which is fine, but i wish there was a channel for like. adults to discuss the comic. because i get young people having an interest in it and im All For That, but it often led to a lot of really immature shit happening? and maybe the perpetrators of that weren’t young, maybe they were just immature

but like there’d regularly be shit posted in the discussion chat (for theories! and opinions! about the comic! which sounds great! until u go into it!) that was like.... “i’d love to just punch lucy” “mike can die in a fire” “david is the worst” etc. like .. i like, hearing people’s opinions, but, jesus? can we not like. talk about our opinions on different characters without resorting to That

plus people went off topic ssssooooo frequently, you’d start off in one channel talking about mike/lucy and all their problems and then it’d somehow switch to one person telling everyone else they were idiots for not seeing that lucy is garbage and THEN it’d switch to some random topic. 

even in The Place For Art people went off topic a LOT (one time i contributed to the conversation and that was the only time i saw anyone get called out for posting in the wrong channel, ironically, dkjgnfkjgndf MY BAD THO FOR ENCOURAGING IT)

not to mention people spam the “show me old art” command in the art room and like..... Blease. please go do that in the room that’s Specifically For Bot Commands

also i’d really like to see an art room for General Art and a room for BCB-specific art. im only there for the bcb art. specifically for the NEW bcb art. 

i guess my biggest frustration with it was just how often it Wasn’t about bcb, even tho bcb was all i was there for? idk it wouldve been nice to have discussions with people, but the few discussions i got involved in got WAY out of hand really quickly (with people zooming off topic or guilt-tripping others or saying characters should die). better organization of channels would also be nice. idk. 

back to semi-constructive: 

if i made my own bcb discord server (which i wont, because that’d be rude to the creators who put a bunch of time / effort into making this one), here’s how i’d do it:

Area for general topics, not related to BCB. - General (where Whatever can be talked about) - General Art - Bot room (bot commands used) - Meme room - Music room (song recs, playlists, maybe videos) - Maybe a room for discussing / recommending other comics. - Maybe a room /specifically/ for venting in bc people seem to like doing that 

Area for BCB specific topics. - General BCB (just talking about Whatever in relation to the comic, can even be shitposts/memes as long as they’re on-topic) - Page Update Room (nobody BUT the page updater can talk, that way people can have alerts to this on w/o getting clutter) - Discussion room (talking about the characters / the story, making sure to include in the rules that saying shit like “x character sucks” and “x character should die / get beat up” is not cool, as well as rules abt Being Nice To Vero) - BCB art room where candybooru posts are shared (as they’re uploaded) and people can share their bcb-specific art

Area for Real Adults (over 18 at least, maybe even pushing it to 21 & over) - General - BCB-specific discussion (can just talk about bcb in a place where There Aren’t Kids) - BCB-specific Extra Adult Discussion (talk specifically about mature topics like mental illness/etc)

and then i’d have mods that like regularly pushed people into the right channels or encourage everyone to keep each other in check.

oh and another final disclaimer: i know Oliver is doing his best w/ like.. running this discord & keeping up with everything, it seems like A Lot. fully no shade intended here, i just wanted to like air my personal grievances with the discord. & i understand that a lot of my frustration is due to.... the type of people that post the most in the discord. which is why i’d vote for a Mature Area (god i sound pretentious saying that, im so sorry).
