Hello again, I'm here to request once more. Feel free to take all the time you need btw! I would always be patient for your wonderful works ^^
This time I'd like to request from the Drabble List#2 - 47 with the 020607 Trio (mainly Mahiru though). And yes, this is hugely inspired by that one minigram with Mahiru. And as usual, feel free to change the scenario and/or the characters.
Thank you again, good luck with your future studies and take all the time you need!!
Woo thank you so much!! :'D This one was a ton of fun (and once again led me to get smacked in the face with unlikely character parallels I wasn't aware of before). It's from Kazui's pov but it's still mainly about Mahiru. I ended up going canon-compliant, but I did consider sticking super close to the minigram and do a little normal-au where Mahiru drags them across Japan to make a perfectly homemade cake šŸ˜…
Everyone knew Mahiru had a tough time distinguishing genuine from joke, but Kazui hadnā€™t expected it to come back to bite him. Mahiru wasnā€™t stupid by any means; sometimes she just forgot that others werenā€™t as unabashedly honest as herself. When she said something, she meant it. Kazuiā€¦ not so much.
Which is why, following a conversation about her skills in the kitchen, in response to being pressed about his own household, he thought it would be inconsequential to utter the following words to her.
ā€œBake me a cake, and weā€™ll talk.ā€Ā
Kazui had laughed his booming laugh, Mahiru had giggled in her sweet little way. Neither realized what had just transpired.
That is, until Yuno dragged Kazui across the prison the following day to make him aware of the monster he had released upon the kitchens. The two hurried over to find a massive operation underway: Mahiru had several layers in the works, she was stirring multiple fruit fillings, decoration choices scattered across the countertop, and anyone who dared venture too close was shooed away with a slap from her wooden spoon.Ā
It took a few minutes to get the situation all worked out.
ā€œSoā€¦ you didnā€™t really want a cakeā€¦?ā€ She asked, pausing mid-stir. Her eyes were so big and round.
Yuno came to the rescue. ā€œOf course he does!ā€ She interrupted. ā€œEveryone here would die for a taste of your baking~ā€Ā
Kazui nodded. ā€œI just didnā€™t mean for you to work so hard for my sake. Iā€™m really not worth all this effortā€¦ā€
Mahiruā€™s jaw fell, offended on his behalf. ā€œYes you are!ā€ Her attention was momentarily caught by a timer chiming. Kazui took the bowl from her so she could take a pan from the oven. He picked up where she left off stirring.Ā
ā€œEither way, why donā€™t I help you out?ā€ Yuno had grabbed some ingredients from the counter as well. ā€œWhile we bake, Iā€™ll tell you a little bit about myself. A little,ā€ he repeated.Ā
And he did. Her questions were easier than heā€™d expected. While the others knew how to poke and prod about each otherā€™s murders, Mahiru really did just want to know about his home life. While she buzzed around the kitchen switching pans and creating intricate icing patterns, she asked him about his childhood, his hobbies, his job. As soon as she saw his wife was a touchy subject, she let it drop (though with a bit of disappointment, to be sure). He scrambled a bit as Yuno the human lie detector would shoot him a look now and then. Overall, though, his measured answers managed to satisfy both women without giving much of himself away.
When they carried the spectacular cake into the common room to everyoneā€™s amazement, Mahiru prodded him with her elbow.
ā€œWe should talk more! I mean, come on. How difficult was that?ā€
If only she knew the half of it.
ā€”ā€”ā€”
ā€œHey, Mahiru.ā€ Kazui traded weak smiles with Yuno as he joined her by the bed.
ā€œOh. Hi Kazui,ā€ came her weak voice. She tried her best to smile under the tangle of bandages that surrounded her. Then, silence.Ā
Aside from a few coughs and small requests, that silence stretched on for hours. He and Yuno usually had a lot to talk about, but neither could muster anything up today.
He thought Mahiru had dozed off, but she surprised him by taking his hand. ā€œKazui?ā€
ā€œYes?ā€
ā€œDo you really think Iā€™m unforgivable?ā€Ā
He blinked. ā€œI canā€™t really say.ā€Ā
The moment the words left his lips, he knew they were the wrong ones. Well, the glare that Yuno was trying to murder him with also helped. ā€œEr, I forgive you, of course. Butā€¦ I donā€™t know anything about you, Mahiru. Not really. I canā€™t say why others would think youā€™re unforgivable or not.ā€Ā
ā€œ...I see.ā€
Yuno looked like she wanted to add something, but couldnā€™t find the words. Traces of emotions flickered over her face before she could cover them up. Kazui guessed she wanted to defend Mahiru. But maybe she also agreed with him. And that was when the realization struck him.
ā€œI guess, I always thought you were so much better than me and Yuno when it came to talking about yourself. You do it all the time, and very easily. But now that I think about it, I probably know just as much about your situation as you know about mine. For such an honest person, you hide everything just like we do. Or maybe, you hide from everything, like we do.ā€
More silence.
A teary smile appeared on her face. ā€œYou knowā€¦ you could bake me a cakeā€¦ and maybe weā€™ll talk.ā€
Kazui didnā€™t laugh, and she didnā€™t giggle. He nodded, solemnly. ā€œI think thatā€™s a good idea.ā€

Rewatching Ninjago
(With no context other than the episode)
Skybound 3-4
Nya: (holds onto jay because shes scared of the jail prisoners)
Jay: :D
Jay: (falls on his fucking face)
Smooth Jay.
Cole: yeah? Well are these cuffs good enough against my SUPER STRENGTH
Cole (trying his best): just wait, almost got it-
Nya: Theyre not gonna break.
ITS HIM
THE SHITBAG WHO TRIED TO TAKE APART ZANE. FUCK HIM.
Zane: by my observations, that was your own fault by working for a crime boss šŸ¤Ø
Cant believe Lloyd went to prison at what, 16? 17???
How is the warden not even a little mad that this engineer over here can open all the prison cells with the push of a button????
Nice of them to put all the ninja in one singular cell
Dareth (after failing at one attempt at breaking the ninja out): welp, your on your own!
Its hilarious how some prison-mates have ninja favorites
Like some guy just spit in Coles direction because heā€™s a Jay fan
Jay: Hey! Its captain Soto! The first captain of the destinyā€™s bounty!
Captain Soto: And its Jay! The whiny sniveling blue pajama man who says everything obvious.
Honestly though, If wishing for love was something you could do. And something Jay planned on doing. That would end up really fucked up.
Kryptorium is like, the baddest and most secure prison of them all right?
So why tf do all the prisoners have weapons.
This prison is a load of shit
THE GUARDS ARENT EVEN DOING ANYTHING
I remember being so scared as they held Zane down and tried to take his spare parts
This is so disturbing they even opened him up
THANK YOU PIXAL!!!
Lloyd, with a guard holding onto him: We could break out tonightā€¦
The guard: šŸ˜®
The guard: lol jk idgaf
The side characters are so unbothered
Nadakhan: I want to return to my home realm. Djinjago.
Ooooo new realm!!!
Wait wait wait
Need to type this down so i dont forget
So, ever since the ninja killed the preeminent and basically making the cursed realm non existent. Due to all the 16 realms being interlocked, djinjago is crumbling into non existence as well?
SO NOW THERES 14 ALIVE REALMS????
Well, that gives nadakhan a motive to hunt the ninja I guess
His plan is to overtake ninjago.
How original.
The ninja escaped!!!!!
The cops are so incompetent.
Kai holding Cole above water as they traverse the sewers šŸ„ŗ
I love them.
I would also laugh like captain soto if i realized some girl who was gonna fight the djinn looked exactly like his past lover
Hilarious irony
Police chief: I want to find those ninja!!! They could be under our noses for gods sake!
Nya (in a police uniform): im in! Right under their nosesā€¦ now I need the password to get in.
Jay (also undercover): got it!
Jay (his whiny voice drastically changing to a deep steady one): uhhh whats the password?
Hfjsjbejsntnjw that took me so off guard
Honestly, imagine the amount of ninjago civilians who are still ninja fans and are also ACAB after the police but the ninja in prison. Not to mention how incompetent these cops are šŸ’€
Kai (gets zapped by the junkyard fence): caraful zane! This things electrocuted!
Zane: Yes kai, I think that was abundantly clear by all the ā€˜dangerā€™ and ā€˜electricityā€™ signs šŸ˜„
Kai: Hurry up!
Zane: these chains will take me a while. You could keep interrupting me or you could start making yourself USEFULšŸ™„
Zanes so sassy with Kai
Nadakhan and his ship are in the sky!!!!
Its funny how the ninja are searching for Nadakhan and nadakhan is searching for the ninja but neither can find the other
I remember this episode. Im not ready.
Im crossing my fingers for Jay not to fuck anything up but I already know what happens šŸ˜
Jay: let me! A gentleman- uh i mean uh, a superior! Always pays!
You already fucked up by saying superior šŸ¤Ø
Jay: (cant find his wallet) oh uh wrong pantsā€¦
Nya: (pays for them both)
Aaaand you didnt check if you could even pay beforehand
HFBSJFNSJNRNWJRBEB
THE SMOOTH JAZZ AS NADAKHAN WATCHED NYA TAKE OFF HER HAT AND MUSTACHE DISGUISE IM DYIIING
Nya is speaking factā€™s honestly.
Shes trying to convey how she feels about him constantly showcasing that he harbors feelings for her
And hes like ā€œIts because im from a junkyard isnt it šŸ˜’ā€
Like dude i get your insecure but dont come off like that
Nya: (CONTINUES to spit fucking facts about how shes already seen as the ā€˜girlā€™ ninja and doesnt wanna be seen as the ninjas ā€˜girlfriendā€™)
She let him down so nicely too
she explained why that it wasnt him. It was HER. She cant be tied to ANYONE. It doesnā€™t have ANYTHING to do with Jay.
Jays apology was actually really nice tho.
Hes forgiven.
I dont blame jay too much. He said ā€˜I wished I never saw my futureā€™. And its kinda hinted that if he never saw his future he would probably stay friends with Nya and not have a problem with it.
Honestly, if I saw I was fated with someone. Like, LITERAL destiny. I would get a little obsessed too.
Jay. You KNOW Nya looks like Nadakhans lover. Its been CONFIRMED that you guys know this information. So why would he help you get with Nya.
These two are literally in the middle of the street how is nobody seeing a djinn and the blue ninja just waltzing around
Jays wish is actually sorta sweet
ā€œI wish I wasnā€™t born in a junkyard- I wish I wasnt poor! And I wish, I could give Nya anything she wantedā€¦ā€
Yeah, it makes me sad that he isnt proud of of where he was raised. But its a sweet thought to want to give Nya only the best.
God. Jays voice sounded so broken when he read the letter, believing Ed and Edna died...
HE LOVES HIS PARENTS SM šŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜
Edna (seeing her son in a police disguise with ketchup on his shirt after breaking out of prison): what's wrong honey? What's all the fuss?
This is it. The part that shattered younger meā€™s brain.
Ed: Jay... You're adopted.
BOOM.
MIC DROP.
Does Jay EVER return to the fritz donnegan/Cliff Gs mansion after this season? I mean, he inherited it. Did he sell it? Is it just, like, out there?
Jay: that must mean... My real names Jay Gordon?
Nope. Hate it. Youre still Jay walker.
HOW IS JAY THIS LUCKY HFJDJSNFJS
All of Jays wishes have been going his way
Jay wished to not be alone with the djinn, do you know HOW easy it would have been for Nadakhan to trick him
Office lady civilian: So, they finally fixed our office huh :)
(Rockets come shooting from Nadakhans ship)
Office lady: NOT AGAIN
Just another day in ninjago
Nya. There was no reason for you to take off your ninja mask. All that did was show the djinns crew members that you looked like Delara.
Its crazy that some people other than the ninja know spinjitzu
Honestly though, Jay never sought out nadakhan. Hes quite literally being cautious about it too. Making sure nobody is by themselves, that no one says anything about wishes.
Djinn literally did Jays wishes perfect to a T. Why is he screwing Kai over so hard šŸ˜
Kai. you better word your third wish perfectly.
NFNSJFNSJNRR
HIS BULLET WENT STRAIGHT THROUGH GHOST COLE. FIVE TIMES. šŸ’€šŸ’€šŸ’€
thats literally the funniest way for the realm crystal to break
Kai: I WISH FOR IT ALL TO GO AWAY
Goddammit Kai.
They got Kai trapped in the sword :/
I honestly didnt think heā€™d get captured
He was the ā€˜mainā€™ ninja for so long. To take him out this early in the season is new.
Love ninjago for trying new things.

Forgiveness.
To some, it's the literal definition.
To me, it meant letting someone have their way with whatever they want.
After a long, difficult battle, the shark themed villain, dubbed "Placoi" by the media, seemed to disappear into thin air.
"Damn it, she always seems to get away, doesnt she?" My young ward, Overcharge, asked.
I only nodded in agreement, but the smile on my face showed nothing but absolute joy. I could barely contain my excitement, and it took all my effort not to squeal with joy, like my mild mannered alter ego would. After months of battling, and racking up millions of dollars in damages, we were so close to stopping her.
Back in our lair, on a remote island, I'm taking off my super suit, when my phone gets a call.
"Miss Mabry," it's my assistant. "You have an appointment in twenty. Get here on time or I'm removing your coffee priviledges."
"Okay, Piper, I-" I was cut off.
"You have a caller ma'am. Someone named 'Alyssa Dukes'? D'you want me to patch her through?" Piper asked.
I rubbed my temples. Fifth time today I've had a random caller. It better not be a marketer.
The call goes through and I hear on the opposite end,"Hello? Is this Miss Mabry?" The voice is very familiar.
"Yes this is, how can I help you?" I answer with confusion.
The caller, Alyssa, replies,"We need to talk about your work ethic. You, almost catching me, again? Hahaha."
A chill goes down my spine. "How, in the hell, did you find out?"
"Tracker." She replies. "You use a tracker on all your shit to keep track of it. Last week, a prototype coffee machine went missing from one of your stores. Unfortunately, the chip wore out after an hour. Fortunately, I was able to mimic the signal with my own piece of crap hardware, and what do i find? Miss Alyx Mabry is "Shark Match"? I mean, c'mon. Give me a little credit."
"What happens now?" I ask.
"Now, nothing. But a week from now, you'll know. And, dont worry. I wont share your secret as long as your secretary deletes this audio as soon as you've finished tracking my signal. Come alone. I'll be there by myself."
The call ends, and I have a location.
"Ma'am?" Piper asks.
"I guess I'm losing coffee priviledge, huh?"
"Same cover?" She prompts.
"No, tell them I just didn't want to come."
--------------------------------------------------
I get to the site the call led me to, and I find it's an abandoned warehouse on the edge of town. One of mine.
I get inside, and theres a table set up for what looks like dinner. A woman sits at the table with her back to me. I pull out my capture gun and launch a volley at her. It wraps around, and I hear the click telling me its locked in place.
"Oh, tsk tsk tsk. I told you unarmed." I hear from her. "But I guess, seeing as how this isnt technically a 'firearm', it doesnt count."
I approach her, slowly.
"Dont be afraid, sweetheart. If I wanted to hurt you, I would've went after that brat of yours, 'Overcharge'. By the way, what kind of douche calls 'imself 'overcharge'?"
I round the table and sit in the open chair.
"So, why did you call?" I ask, eyeing the spaghetti.
"I didn't poison it, if that's what your wondering." She answers. "And, I called you here because I have a proposition for ya'."
"Not interested" I answer quickly.
"Oh, c'mon. You dont even know what it is."
"Dont need to." I take a bite. I dont care if its poisoned, it tastes delicious. Weird after taste, though.
"Actually, you might wanna. The sleeping pill is gonna take effect soon, what with your heightened metabolism and all."
"Damnit" I bang my head on the table.
"I'm kidding" she says.
She flexes, and the ropes break, and I flinch.
I look up at her, and shes standing next to the table, in a black suit that hugs her curves.
"All I'm asking for is your forgiveness, and I'll stop all my crimes." She says, seriously.
"You arent serious, are you? The public would never allow that! You'd be lucky with life in prison." I yell.
"But what the public doesn't know, wont hurt them." She prompts.
"Huh?"
"Hear me out," she asks," we continue this whole 'pissing contest' in public, I terrorize the citizens, bring what seems like calamity, and you 'stop me'." She says, using air quotes. "During our fights, I'll cause little to no structural damages, I'll keep my zero body count-yes, I've kept track- and I'll put up practically no fight. How does that sound?"
"Like you actually did drug me."I reply with a straight face.
"Whether or not you believe me, or even accept this, it's still gonna happen." She sits back down and takes a bite of bread.
"What even prompted this?" I ask.
"I fell in love, and realized who I love will never accept me the way I am right now." She says.
"Wha?"
"Look, the answers not important. Just know I'll be cutting back on crime time."
"Why couldnt you have just said that?"
"Would you have believed me?"
I take a second.
"Yeah, you're probably right."
--------------------------------------------------
Months later, and she was true to her word. I'd only fought her 12 times, about a third of her original time, and not so much as a scratch was put on the buildings.
During those months, I actually spent time with her, learning her past, trying to understand her. After hearing her story, it was no wonder she did what she did. With parents who acted like that, I woulda snapped. Slowly, ever so slowly, I realized we had a blossoming friendship. I saw a lot -probably too much- of myself in her. We got into a rhythm of after fighting, to sit down and talk.
After the twelfth fight, I finally had the courage to ask, "So, who was this mysterious man you fell in love with?"
She looked at me with a pained look.
"Nevermind that," she waved away the question. "Tell me, is there anyone in your life whose caught your eye?"
"Nuh-uh. You cant turn this on me. I asked you first." I stared her down.
"Fine." She said, breaking eye contact and staring at her lap, where she cradled a cup of tea. "First, before I tell you, you ahve to answer this question."
"It better not be a relationship question."
"Its not." She says. She looks around, closes her eyes, and stares at me, saying, "Do you think anybody can be redeemed? Do you think anyone can get forgiveness for any deed done, barring murder?" She bites her lip in worry.
I shake my head and giggle a little. "You've already asked this, and I said yes."
"I know, I just need to get enough courage to confess to you." She says.
"Wha-?"
She interrupts."I fell in love with you, but because I'm a villain, and you're a hero, I thought I could never tell you that. But, after all this time, I've grown as a person. I've still got some way to go, though."
"I-im flattered that you think that way, but-"
"You're straight, arent you, of course you are, why wouldnt you be. You're literally the perfect woman, and her I am, being a negative influence on everyone. I should've never invited you over, I'm sorry." She runs away, before I could stop her.
I get up and call after her, yelling "Alyssa!" But she either cant hear me, or doesn't want to. I dont panic, though. I cant. My phone starts to ring, and Its my assistant.
"Damnit Piper" I answer. "Now's probably the worst time. What do you want?"
"Its almost time for your speech. And, my names Jannet." She says blankly. Speech? I think to myself.
"Sorry, Jannet. I'm still trying to get used to Piper not being here." Is what I actually say.
"You're the one who promoted her."
I hang up and look towards the door Alyssa ran out. I take a step towards it, when my phone rings with a reminder. I glance at it, it says 'Mayoral inaugural speech'.
I put my phone down, and race towards the other door. I open it, and inside is my suit.
"Well, Shark Match," I say to myself," Time to Come out of the closet so your crush doesn't destroy New Yallk City. Man, sounds like a bad autobiography. Or a fanfiction title.
-------------------------------------------
The Mayor is exactly like you'd imagine him. Slimy and not particularly firm in any ideology that doesn't secure his vote. As a citizen asked to prepare a speech to secure to African American vote, I lost all faith in this man. But today I lost the additional bit of faith I didn't even realize I had. I don't like to keep up with politics, as someone in my line of work shouldn't, so it was a surprise to me when, in the middle of my speech, someone from the paper yelled "Why are you against gay marriage? Is it because of your parents."
"Who said that?" I yell. "I was trying to find some way to put it, but it didnt feel natural until now. It'd be pretty bad for my community if I went against it, now wouldn't it? I didnt even realize this man" I point to the mayor, "thought like that. What, do I need to wear the lesbian flag as a Cape now? Actually, that be awesome."
I shoot one more glare at the mayor, who's sweating by now. "Give him one term. If he doesnt clean up his act by then, I'll run for mayor myself. I'll even reveal myself at that point. Hows that sound?" The crowd cheers.
The dinner afterward was a littel awkward on his end, but only one thought kept going through my head. 'Did Alyssa see?'
----------------------------------------------
It was midnight when I heard my window squeak. I heard footsteps come close to my bed, a piece of paper get placed on my nightstand, and footsteps retreat.
I wait a minute, then get out of bed and turn on a light. The paper says "This friday, Same warehouse, 9pm. Wear something sexy, I need to apologize.
-Signed
Alyssa dukes"
I smile and set the note back down, pleasant thoughts accompanying me to dreamland..

To End The Year, A Mini-Magpie With A Mini Mystery.
Has mega-fraudster Craig Gore skipped Australia? And if so, why hasnt this been reported in the media especially since he is supposed to have made a midnight flit the very day after a judge refused to allow him to leave? In other matters, one has to admit that the Townsville Bulletin is consistent it has ended the year as it started, continuing its weekly Olympic-standard shambles. And Mongrel the Barrister has left us lawyer Mark Donnelly, the man who inspired a much loved Magpie character has passed away. and our final visit to Trumpistan for 2018. But first Its hard to keep a good man down, and our fav toonist Bentley is nothing if not a good man. Even in the holiday season, he casts his jaundiced eye over the news, and brings us a different and rib-tickling perspective. This week, he was much taken as most of us were with the drone drama at Gatwick Airport in the UK. A professional drone was reported in the airports approach and departure air space, and thousands of travellers were stuck when the whole shebang was shut down for a couple of days while the wallopers tried to go hi-tech and trace the source of the bastardry. Its not fully sorted yet, but Bentley thinks the drone may have already met its fate.
Tumblr media
Why Arent All The Gore-y Details Available?
Tumblr media
Will ye no come back agin, laddie? Now to our mini-mystery. On December 19, this report appeared in the Courier Mail. Judge denies disgraced former rich-lister Craig Gore request to travel overseas Vanessa Marsh, The Courier-Mail December 20, 2018 2:21pm A DISGRACED former rich-lister accused of ripping off almost $800,000 from investors has broken down in court after a judge refused his request to leave the country to visit family. Lawyers for alleged fraudster Craig Gore today launched an application in the Queensland District Court, seeking for the former businessmans bail conditions to be altered to allow him to travel to Sweden to visit his wife and children. But Judge Paul Smith denied the request, saying Gore faced a long time in prison if convicted and there was a real risk he would not return to Australia to face trial. Gore is facing 12 charges of fraud over allegations he swindled about $800,000 from self-managed super fund investors in 2013-14. He also faces three charges of managing companies while disqualified. Now that seems pretty definitive and eminently sensible. But The Magpie was informed two days later, by a regular contact and mate who has always been on the money in the past, that Gore went back to court the next day on another application, and had his passport returned so he could be with his family in Sweden at Christmas. He was to return in three months to face trial and possibility of a lengthy striped suntan. The Pies contact says Gore was on a flight out of Brisbane that night at 11pm, accompanied by a lawyer (that was apparently part of the arrangement) who will return with certain paperwork. Gore will be expected to make his own way back to face his fate in March. Yeah, right. Now all that is as it may be, BUT THIS SPECTACULAR REVERSAL OF A JUDGES IMPLACABLE DECISION HAS BEEN NEITHER EXPLAINED OR APPEARED IN THE MEDIA. Well, not that The Magpie can find, after days of searching to verify. If it is true, there will be a hell of a lot of very pissed off people Gores victims and the tireless investigators who nailed him who know just how long are the odds that we will ever see this shyster again. Shades of Skase!! Perhaps we will never know how this came about if it did come about because there will be a lofty judicial silence of unaccountability if he is a no show but surely the second hearing was an open court? Hard to fathom why it wasnt reported. Mongrel The Barrister Is No More The Magpies good mate Mark Sludge Donnelly the man who partially inspired the popular Magpie character Mongrel the Barrister, died in his family home in Cairns last weekend. It is fair to say that Mark was my best mate in the halcyon days of Portraits Bar in the Exchange Hotel all through the Noughties, the years when I was reporting court matters for the Bulletin. We were part of a memorable and disparate group, the bar crowded with our marvellously mixed group every Thursday, Friday and sometimes Saturday nights. (The fondly remembered Portraits became Poseurs Bar in the newspaper column and then in this blog.) Mark was universally known as Sludge, which he happily answered to, but never fully explained, even to me, its origins apparently it had something to do with a memorable comment from a lecturer or senior teacher suggesting Marks behaviour at that time some comparable to something from the bottom of a pond. Sludge was one of the wittiest people Ive known, and his memory was nothing short of astounding, not just for quoting legal precedents but in all things, particularly pop music. He always commandeered the music machine at parties, and was a pretty good DJ. He also had an eye for a well turned ankle, and his way of getting ladies to talk about themselves endeared him to more than one. Like many a member of the Portraits push, Mark liked a drink, and some believed he was a bit too enthusiastic in this direction. But I would say that rather than having a battle with the bottle, he just had frequent skirmishes with it, as we all did and any excess rarely affected his work at the other more sedate bar, where he often shone. Mark left Townsville when his father died, to live with his mother in the family home in Cairns. He didnt practice in Cairns, and went into virtual retirement, which was plagued by ill health for some time. He returned to Townsville annually for his birthday, but I lost touch in the past few years, for which I feel a bit miserable now. Sludge is now undoubtedly arguing the finer points about the Laws of Entry with St Peter for that is certainly where this witty, soft-hearted old friend of mine now is because we all know God loves a larrikin. Mark was 62. They Really Dont Understand Language at The Astonisher, Do They? And they even get the wrong WORD for a headlines. Even when theyre trying to make a pun, which kinda depends on the right word, yes? But we got a headline quoting some bizoid saying Townsville is bracing for a great 2018. Bracing for? Ahem. Youve managed to say EXACTLY THE OPPOSITE of what you meant. Heres the dictionary definition of bracing. verb[withobject] prepare (someone or oneself) forsomethingdifficult or unpleasant:both stations arebracingthemselvesforjoblosses|policeare braced fora trafficnightmare. So although this paper goes through life like a bouncing Hari Krishna whos visited the medicine cabinet once too often, giving us totally unquestioning, unexamined glop about our economy (usually from someone with a vested interest), it seem to have inadvertently hit on the truth here. However, the most tedious aspect of the paper of late is the dreary attempts at humour in headlines, particularly about crime, a subject no one in Townsville with the exception of you folks in Flinders Street, finds the least bit funny. AND EVEN THEN, LANGUAGE FAILS YOU let alone a sharp sense of humour.Take this major front page fail on Thursday.
Tumblr media
Swindler? My dear headline writer, stay with me on this and read slowly, feel free to move your lips as you must. Now lets see, a swindler is someone who fiddles some unsuspecting victim out of something. That person would be called a fiddler, and if hidden in a ceiling, could be described as ta da a Fiddler In The Roof. You see, this would then coincide with the hit musical of the same name oh, how we would have all fallen about, clutching our sides in mirth, and holding your superior wit in such esteem!!! But swindler? Now weve just got a headache from smacking our foreheads yet again. And this one in simply NOT TRUE. This online
Tumblr media
The actual number of people who said (or may have said, who knows, its probably a fiddled fantasy anyway) was 55% of the 700 or so people who responded to a totally uncontrolled survey. If there area 220,000 potential readers (ha! you wish) in the circulation area, the percentage is not even .5 of one percent. Frankie Boyle The cleverest quote of the week comes from the Scottish comedian Frankie Boyle in the Guardian. But first, his preamble touched a chord for The Magpie, who can vouch for it when Mr Boyle writes: The plight of the satirist, such as it is, is a compulsion to look at the grimmest, most important thing they can think of, and then for reasons that probably wouldnt survive a really good therapist, try to make it funny. To try to address the iniquities of their society, the satirist must manufacture some hope that what theyre doing might make a difference, then type it all up and send it off somewhere before they remember that it never does. Looking back over the events of this year is a bit like holding a doll for a therapist and pointing to where the bad man hurt you. Mr Boyles point is a universal one, which can be shared by Townsvilleans looking back over the past shambolic year. But his prize quote is so subtle, that you may have to think about for a while The Pie roared after a few seconds. The murder ofJamal Khashoggiby Saudi Arabia is another very difficult subject to find the lighter side of, unless someone in the Ecuadorean embassy has clipped the story out and stuck it to the fridge. (Sigh) Dear Mystified of Mysterton, it means that the Ecuadoreans might be giving their Wikileaks guest Julian Assange a hint.

Dave Barry The other funnyman worth a quote is the inimitable Dave Barry , the American columnist who talks about Florida the way The Magpie talks about Townsville only he is far funnier, proof being that The Magpie pinches more of his lines (many) than he does of The Magpies (none). This was his challenge to a graduating class, but it can just as well apply to the year 2019. How are you, Class, going to respond when the Clock-Radio of Challenge emits the Irritating Buzz of Opportunity? Are you going to roll over and hit the Snooze Button of Complacency?

This online

But we all know that the on-line edition is sloppy, so the paper itself will temper the outlandish claims, wont it? Errr no.

This story is selective twaddle certainly straight off an unedited media release from the Dudley Do Nothings, meaningless twaddle in which Ms OCallaghan specialises. It has often been said of her that she has the gift of the gab, and aint that the truth, just about all of what she has to say, in The Pies experience, is just that meaningless gabble that sounds good until it is more thoughtfully examined. Like this: The Museum of Underwater Art, located within the heart of The Great Barrier Reef, is a proposal based on the works of international sculpture and underwater artist Jason deCaires Taylor. Whats that bit located in the heart of the Great Barrier Reef? Has there been a Krakatoa-like geographic shift we havent noticed? The Underwater Museum, one of several planned along the coast, will be, at last report, just of Maggy Island, the GBR is a at least an hour or more away by fast cat . But in it goes to the story, with a newbie cub reporter just churning out this PR bumf. But wait, theres more. We then get this prize piece of meaningless gabble from the top executive charged with attracting and promoting tourism to Townsville: Its a project that is going to enhance the Great Barrier Reef experience and also educate visitors on how we manage and live with the reef everyday Ms OCallaghan said. That is absolute poppycock that is totally meaningless. And We? Bloody WE? FFS, girl, get a bloody grip. Insulting, uppity tripe from Ms OCallaghan and lazy, presumably unsupervised reporting (read: select all, copy and paste) by a very uncurious junior reporter (read: stenographer).
