What's hnk about? I'd look it up but I don't want to risk spoilers if I do watch it
ooooo where to start....
So basically humans went extinct hundreds if not thousands of years ago due to asteroid impacts on Earth, which also created multiple other moons.
The story takes place on a little island where another type of humanoid life-form has developed: gem people, literally made entirely out of rock (and some semi-organic "inclusions" throughout the rock bringing life to it), who can be put together again if they are broken. However, due to the relative homogeniety of their bodies (no organs, it's just rock all the way through), all functions (including cognitive/memories) are interspersed throughout, so if parts of their bodies are lost and not recovered, they lose the memories that had been stored in those body-parts. These gem-people are pretty much immortal and have settled into a long and peaceful existence on the island, yet they always have to be on the lookout for other creatures called Lunarians, who come from the moon and occasionally invade Earth to break apart and kidnap the Gems.
If you're wanting to get into Houseki no Kuni, I would recommend starting with the anime, since it's easier to tell all the characters apart due to the presence of color (which could also help you better memorize who the characters are if you were to read the manga afterwards), and it's just a really well-done anime with a beautiful soundtrack and gorgeous 3d animation. If you like the anime, I would recommend reading the manga from the beginning, since the drawings are amazing and there are some subtle differences between the adaptations.
There are some a warnings I have to give you though. First of all, the anime only covers the first part(s) of the story, and ends on kind of a cliff-hanger. (It'd be cool if they make a season 2, but it's been years and I haven't heard any news of that on the horizon.)
Second of all, and kind of most importantly...the manga gets really, really depressing. It (like the anime) starts out with a happy and peaceful feel, but it gets way sadder than you can even imagine if you've only seen the anime. It got to the point where I kind of lost interest for a while just because of how gloomy it was. The characters (especially the main character, though by the end it extends to all of them in different ways) go through some truly unimaginable hardships, and the way it ends (or at least where the manga is left off rn; it feels like it could be an ending but I've heard people say the author is just taking a long hiatus) is...bittersweet at best, and still super depressing in some ways. It does kinda feel like a...somewhat satisfying(ish?) ending considering just how awful everything had been before, and the fact that all the big questions (in relation to like...the nature of things, and the past) are answered, and the question of the future is also basically answered even though it's super bittersweet and kinda depressing.
