This character doesn’t have a name or faceclaim because I’ve yet to decide on them but she’s existed since the moment I decided Yuchen could see ghosts!  (I actually have a drabble about the day they met that I haven’t posted and actually wrote for an assignment...lmao)  Unsurprisingly, she’s a ghost! But Yuchen, being Yuchen, never really realised. Context helps a lot in understanding their relationship so I’m going to use this post to talk about that, maybe more than about Ghost Girl herself.
They first met when Yuchen was about 15 years old. This is around the time he started getting interested in dance but he didn’t have anywhere decent to practice but his bedroom. However, it turned out even that was no good after his mum walked in on him dancing and, being the overly sincere teenager he was, this was just far too embarrassing for him to possibly recover from it. That’s when he started using the beach as his personal dance studio instead. It was a little awkward because the ground wasn’t level and there was no handy computer screen from which to copy his moves but he found a quieter part of the beach that people didn’t often visit, especially in colder month, and memorised what he could from his phone screen. It wasn’t perfect but it worked and it didn’t cost him any money. However, he wasn’t as alone as he’d thought and it turned out he was still being watched by someone. That someone was, of course, Ghost Girl!
From there, they grew to be friends! And that’s in spite of the fact that she was incredibly unsure about Yuchen because 1) how could she see him? and 2) why was he completely unbothered by it? Obviously, the answer to the second question is that he’s blissfully ignorant but that doesn’t matter. It kind of worked out. She didn’t like talking about the fact she was dead and any hints she dropped that she was seemed to mostly go over Yuchen’s head. As a result, he became the first and only friend she’d had in years, right up until the day he announced he was moving abroad to pursue dance. She was sad to see him go but supportive all the same and, thanks to his kindness, she was actually able to eventually move on and stop haunting the beach.
I haven’t actually mapped out the details of how and why she died besides that she drowned in the ocean so I’ll save that for another post. All I know for certain is that the world wasn’t kind to her and she died lonely. This is largely why she was so hesitant to befriend Yuchen when he first approached her and why it was so important that they did become friends. It’s also why she was never really able to explain her circumstances to him. It was too much like opening a sore wound.
