Ranking of 7 Best Picture Nominees at Oscars That I Have Seen(So Far)
I have not seen A Complete Unknown, Nickel Boys, or I'm Still Here. I plan on seeing I'm Still Here. I unfortunately missed Nickel Boys during its short run. I don't want to see ACU because I like Bob Dylan.
In terms of how much I enjoyed them:
Anora
The Brutalist
Wicked
Conclave
Dune Pt 2
HUGE GAP IN QUALITY
6. Emilia Perez (which I didn't finish).
SPECIAL RECOGNITION "AWARD": The Substance, which is a technically "good" movie in the sense that it was effective in getting the exact emotion out of me that I think they were going for, but I can't say I "enjoyed" it because I'm squeamish and had to skip a lot of scenes in the film so technically I didn't "finish" this one either, though that last shot was GREAT.
So I couldn't finish Emilia Perez because it sucked, but I couldn't watch all of The Substance because I think that movie worked exactly as it was intended.
#I try to acknowledge when a film has good aspects but it just isn't for me#A Complete Unknown might be that bc most music or pop culture biopic movies ARE#But with some horror movies they hit differently than most movies I feel that way about#for most movies that leave me with a sense that the film has many things good or even excellent#I'm just not the target audience for the film and that's okay#the movie isn't working emotionally#I think a lot of horror films get EXACTLY the emotion they are going for...and I'm a whimp#Emilia Perez is just wildly bad on all levels#And actually in a different way that most Bad Picture frontrunners are bad?#Like Green Book was HEAVILY criticized for its portrayal of race and the accuracy of the main character's life#though the backlash to THAT backlash exists too#but I would not call Green Book and incompletely made film on the level of filmmaking#Green Book is stylistically unremarkable sure and it should not have won ANY screenplay awards#but I wouldn't say that it was impossible to watch or that there was anything wrong with the editing cinematography or otehr technical#elements and the two main actors (especially Ali) are good with what they have#Emilia Perez is just a disaster on all levels and I don't know how the technical branches went for it#like I can imagine in my head the type of person who would like Green Book#boomer white voters who would consider themselves progressive in that they'd *vote for Obama a third time if they could* and TELL you that#but aren't going to vote for anything that rocks the boat or see as too radical so they vote for something like Green Book#which makes them feel like they are progressive Good People but doesn't challenge them too much#I don't actually imagine those kinds of people as liking something like Emilia Perez yet they apparently do for some reason#it's not a good musical the editing is not good and I ...guess the cinematography was fine BUT OVER DUNE PT 2???#it's also just a BAD musical#being a bad musical is not as bad as the racist and transphobic stuff#but as a musical theater snob I have to comment#lior liveblogs awards season

Marketing did Elemental DIRTY
Just saw the movie, it was well worth the watch. The trailer made the movie look like some half assed race metaphor Zootopia ripoff with a canned, rehashed love story you've seen a million times.
Let me be clear, Elemental was none of the things the trailer made you believe it was.
First things first, The Romance:
There's a reason aro/ace people are flocking to this movie. The main couple falls in love without having to rely on any passionate kisses or hand holding; they fall for each other based on who they are, their personalities, their interests, their appreciation of the other's uniqueness. The central hand holding comes at a point in the movie well after the two are established as a couple, and have gone on many dates together. This movie makes their characters fall in love over mutual appreciation, not physical chemistry, and its such a genuine, sweet, wholesome romance to see play out
On top of that, this movie goes into a lot of aspects of immigrant life and the expectations that come with being a first born in a new country. The romance does not shy away from this or sweep it under the rug. The romance blossoms as the two learn more about each other, and come to understand and respect those differences.
Second, the movie isn't about romance, its about being an immigrant.
I came into this movie expecting zootopia 2: now with elements, and what I got was a heart-wrenching look into the life of a first generation child in a new land, born to immigrant parents. The movie absolutely does NOT sugar coat things, showing not only an ellis island moment of having your name changed, but also a number of topics ranging from having to navigate in a city made for people who are nothing like you, being denied housing, micro-aggressions, and straight up being denied entry to public places based on who you are.
The true heart of this movie is about the child of immigrants realizing the life she wants for herself, struggling with disappointing people who gave up everything they had so they could give you a better life, repaying that sacrifice and what a burden it feels like, and somehow facing the truth of who and what is staring back at you from the mirror.
Third, and lastly, the movie is absolutely beautiful
The trailers did this movie dirty. You never saw the refracting lights from firelight streaming through water, you didn't see the glassblowing, or how the fire dies down to barely a wisp when Ember is sad to burning like a wildfire when she's angry. You didn't see the scene underwater with the tree and |Spoilers|, you didn't see the world building or the character design that went into the background characters. This movie is absolutely beautiful, and uses light as both a visual treat and a metaphor for the movie's themes. Its absolutely gorgeous.
So, if you're wondering whether to skip this movie or watch it, I'm telling you now: ignore the trailers and go see this in theaters.

now you’re on a second date with him, you’re not on his lap but he is between your legs

a/n: sorry this took so long, real-life is a chaos and sucks but thanks to Portugal pics i’m so writing the third chapter now!
[part i]
part ii: the in-between
Going to movies was definitely not on your top three for ideal dates. You usually went to the movie theater with your mom who shared your love for overpriced, extra salty, greasy popcorn and never chit chatted during the movie. Or you just went there alone, enjoying it by yourself and your popcorn.
“Would you like some popcorn?” Joel asked while you were making your way to the screening room.
You texted Joel after two days. You were worried you made him think you were pressured by him. Even though you reassured him a few times it wasn’t like that, he was a gentleman enough to think it was better to give you some space.
After getting your text, he had invited you to a movie he wanted to go to. Saying he had an extra ticket since his brother ditched on him.
“Yeah, it’d be nice.” He motioned for you to go inside, gently pressing his hand on the small of your back.
“You go in and I’ll go get them.”
“I can join—” He raised his hand, pointing through the door.
“I insist.”
Soon enough he came back holding a large bucket of popcorn, and two sodas. You noticed his hands were large enough to carry them without any trace of struggle.
And he had thick long fingers which gave you one of your best orgas—
“Thank you again.” You said as he gave you the bucket.
“Are you comfortable?” He asked as he sat down next to you. Eyes scanning you for a trace of discomfort.
“I’m on a nice fluffy seat, I've got my soda and popcorn. Also I’ve a handsome guy in my company. I don’t see any reason to complain.” You said as you threw one popcorn inside your mouth.
“If you are good with the ‘handsome’ company, then I’m good too.” He said as he took some of your popcorn.
“Are you kidding? It’s the best part.” You winked at him, earning a small chuckle.
He leant to kiss your cheek. You acted before him, your lips pressing his before they could reach your cheek.
The kiss was sweet, and soft. When he sat back you could see the pinkish hue his lips got thanks to your lip balm.
Before you made a comment about it, the lights were dimmed all the way down, meaning you had to focus on the screen, not the handsome company.
The movie was a guy’s movie; full of action and no message to give, just something to enjoy. Maybe you could watch it again with your dad. Whenever you wanted to spend quality time with him at his man cave.
You jumped when the guy blew up the car, some of the popcorn was shifted inside the bucket. He placed his hand on your thigh. It was more protective than suggestive. You knew it was more like a reflex and he had no intention but since you had the brightest idea of wearing your shortest dress it was not that innocent for you.
You could feel the goosebumps forming on your skin, and dampness on your underwear. It did not take you too long to remember your previous date, and how you ended up on his lap.
Just focus on the MOVIE.
His hand was placed in a reasonable spot, a few inches above your knee. Fingers lazily drawing circles on your skin. You glanced at him a few times but each time his eyes were locked on the screen. You knew that he was aware of your gaze. His touch on you got tighter at times, fingers moving higher, halfway to reach your dress just before the first part of the movie was over.
You looked down at your lap, precisely focusing on the casually wandering hand. Saved by a second to get caught. “So? Did you like the movie?”
“It was… entertaining.” You said as you slurped your soda, avoiding his gaze. “I enjoyed it when the guy decided to steal his stepfather’s car, who blamed him for his mother’s death.”
He raised his eyebrow, “You didn’t like it, did you?”
“Not on my top three, but not at the bottom three either. Maybe next time I can pick the movie?”
He smiled, his tongue clicking on his mouth. You knew he liked when you gave him a green light for a second date. “Next time, I’ll let you choose the movie.” He nodded, his hand squeezing your thigh. You subtly parted your thighs, letting his hand move.
When the lights got dimmed again you two were still looking each other, taking in each other for a few seconds before the second half started.
You could feels his gaze on you this time. His fingers were slower, tracing the outline of your inner thighs, moving closer to the hem of your skirt.
You breath hitched, thighs parted slightly, asking for more. You bit down on your lower lip. Breathing through the nose and watching some guy got beaten the hell out of.
Joel’s fingers brushed along the hem of your skirt, waiting there, asking for a sign of approval.
You spent each night to make yourself cum like he did but you did not get even close enough to finish it.
Your body took over the control; you snuggled next to him, raising your hips a little. His fingertips disappeared under your skirt. You looked up to him, seeing the smirk on his face.
His middle finger traced your wet slit through your underwear. Pressing onto your clit, you almost jumped when the pleasure hit you like electricity. Your hand got on his thigh, your fingernails digging onto his hard denim.
He was playing with you as you did to him. You could feel his bulge under rough denim. Fingers dancing slowly on the shape, hearing his breath hitch when you pressed your fingertips on it.
He threw his arm around your shoulder, pressing your body closer to his. His other hand was still on your underwear, playing with the band of it.
You pressed your palm against him, gently stroking him up and down. He slid your underwear to the side, exposing you to him. You cursed under your breath as his fingers played with your folds.
You raised your head, pressing your lips along his jawline. His salt pepper beard trickled your lips but you did not mind. He turned his head, kissing you all he got as he pushed a finger inside you.
You bit down on his bottom lip, trying to not moan loudly and got attention. Thankfully the movie was loud enough and a few people chose that time-slot.
“Joel.” You whispered, placing your hand on his bicep. He didn’t stop, curling his finger inside you slowly pumping in and out. You sank down your nails on his skin, biting down on your lower lip to keep yourself quiet.
You kept palming him, trying to get your revenge but he had the upper hand. Your head felt heavy as your pleasure kept building and building.
The credits started to roll on the screen, and lights were turned on again. Joel pulled out his fingers just before people started to move. You both were smiling at yourselves for not being caught.
You got up quickly, holding him by his wrist, leading him to exit. Ditched your half finished soda and popcorn back there in your seat. Your mind was still cloudy from pleasure and you wanted to get more.
He pressed you to his groin as you walked to his car, afraid someone would see his now semi-hard bulge.
He liked the way you dragged him. He liked how you held onto him. He liked how you looked over your shoulder and gave him a small smile.
He loved your smile.
—
You were in his car, in the parking lot. You looked around to see if there were anyone around before you got inside. You quickly kissed him, moving onto his lap again. He pushed his back, giving you a space for you to move better. His hands were holding your ass over your dress, making you grind into him through his jeans.
“Fuck, baby.” He said, his hold on your ass got tighter. “If you continue to go like this…” He admitted, sucking on the spot under your ear.
“Let me suck you off, please?” You said, battling your eyelashes.
His chest fluttered with your request, he couldn’t remember the last time someone asked him this, if anyone ever did. Now his jeans were a bit tighter and his smile was bigger.
An eyebrow raised. “You want to suck me off?” He cupped your cheek, rough thumb tracing your bottom lip.
Instead of answering him, you took his thumb into your mouth, pressing yourself further on his lap. Your crotch was right on top of his bulge, your dress was lifted around your waist.
He cursed under his breath; raising his hips to feel your damp underwear. His one hand was still on your ass, taking a fistful. He knew if you pressed on him little tighter you would definitely leave this car with his fingertip marks.
“As much as I want to see my cock stuffed in your mouth— I don’t want to do this in here.” He said taking off his thumb and replacing it with his tongue. His hand was on the back of your neck, pressing your body onto him as he kissed you with all he got. You opened your mouth to him, letting his tongue devour inside your mouth.
You placed your hands at the back of his neck, fingers curling around the dark locks there. Feeling him melt onto the kiss.
He gently placed you back on the seat, kissing your temple. Your brain functions stopped, unable to process what he had just done.
“Let me drop you off baby. It’s getting late.”
“Okay.” You said nodding quicker than you want, trying to keep your eyes to yourself and not on his erection. You could heard how devastated you sounded even you only said one simple word.
—
The car ride was quicker than you expected, he probably crossed the speeding limit a few times. His one hand on the wheel, the other fixing his jeans, grumbling whenever he had to slow down.
Your hands were trembling when you put your key in the hole. His large hand placed on your hip, his erection was pressed on your ass. Poking you through your thin dress.
You didn’t know if he was doing this to hide it from people or to turn you on even more. His size was effective enough for both.
You almost pushed yourself inside when the key finally turned, the darkness of your hall greeted you.
You turned on your heels, pulling him closer to you by the collar of his shirt. Not wasting any time to kiss him. He groaned into the kiss, one hand found its place on your waist as the other pushed the door closed.
You tried to think fast, whether you should take him to your bedroom or your couch was fine or not. When he broke the kiss to take a breath. Leaning his head back on the wall, eyes glued to your heavily breathing figure.
Your hands unbuckled his belt, taking it off swiftly. You broke the kiss to get on your knees but he stopped you. “Are you sure?”
You were fooled by his question. Battling your eyelashes, keeping a soft smile on your face. “Yes, Joel. I want this.” You said as you got on your knees. The landing was not as gentle as you hoped when you got on your knees, the fibers of the rug hurt your skin. Taking a note to get yourself a fluffier rug.
Your hands were trembling when they got on his pant button.
You’re not even good at a fucking blowjob.
His hands were placed on yours, stopping you from pulling it down. “Take a moment baby, ‘m not goin’ anywhere. Okay?”
You looked up into him, seeing the soft smile on his face made your heart slow down. His knuckles caressing your cheek up and down. You saw how hard he was trying to hold himself.
You nodded, taking a large breath through your nose. Pulled the jeans down quickly, seeing his angry cock right in front of you.
Telling he was big was definitely an understatement. And he was not even fully hard. Your mouth salivating when you saw how shimy his tip was with the precum a thick vein underside.
You licked your lips, taking his cock in hand. He hissed at your warm touch, guiding it to your lips. He pressed the tip on your lower lip, smearing his arousal.
You gave it a long lick, tongue following its slit. He hissed when you gave him a quick kiss. Licking and kissing along his length; getting him as wet as possible before you took him inside your mouth.
“That’s it. Good girl.” He said as you wrapped your lips around him, and your fingers were wrapped around where your mouth could not fit.
You began moving your head slowly, working your hands alongside. You relaxed your jaw as you took more of him, his tip pressing at the back of your mouth. Your gag reflex triggered when his tip hit the back of your throat. You stopped for a second to give yourself time to adjust before continuing to suck him.
He was breathing through his nose, watching you between his legs. Your left hand was brushing along his balls at every stroke. Your warm mouth around his length. He could see how hard it was for you to fit him inside your mouth. You were breathing your nose, glossy eyes and some saliva leaving your mouth. It was even harder for him to not take control, not hold your head and move his hips. His nails dug into his palm, leaving half moon shaped marks.
He could feel him getting closer and closer to cum, trying to hold it as long as it was possible, savor the moment. But you were making it hard for him when you were looking at him like that. With tears around the corner of your eyes, taking him with all you got; sucking and licking.
You felt his hot cum shoot through the back of your throat and tongue, the familiar sour taste on your taste buds. You waited for him to finish before slowly taking him outside of your mouth.
His hands cupped your cheeks, raising his eyebrows. “Open your mouth.” He said and you obeyed him. Showing his cum pooled on your tongue. “Good girl, now swallow it.” He said, his fingers brushing along your hair, fixing the loose strands and tucking them back.
You felt proud when he called you good girl. You wanted nothing more to please him. You put your tongue back inside your mouth, swallowing all of the cum; opening your mouth again to show him you swallowed.
He chuckled, kissing you after you got back on your feet. “It is my turn to return the favor.” He said, placing his hands on your dress, guiding you to your couch in a few short steps. “Leaving you high and dry is a crime, baby.” He said as he got on his knees, pulling down your underwear.
You nodded along his words, lifting your skirt to show him your bare cunt, as he got on his knees. He smiled at your state, licking his lips before he pressed his mouth on you.
He wasn’t slow or gentle, he was like a starved man who got denied from pleasure for a long time. You were already wet from the second his tip touched your tongue. His tip flicked your swollen clit, you felt like you were electrocuted with sudden pleasure.
“F-fuck! Da-Joel!” You screamed, pulling on his dark curls. Saved by a second by calling him daddy.
He stopped to speak, brushing his mouth along your pussy. His scruff was itching but somehow he made it better.
He looked into your eyes and you saw the spark in his. The corner of his mouth turned into a smirk.
He liked it.
“You wanna call me daddy?” You nodded, raising your hips to his face. “Call me daddy.” He said feeling himself get hard again, continuing to suck on your clit.
You threw your head back, pulling his curls again. “Daddy, it’s t—too m—much.” You confessed, toes curling as the orgasm built on, sweat forming on your temples. You felt your face heat up when you got close to this soon.
Was this okay?
“You gonna come for daddy? Go on, show me what my baby does so good. Coming for all over her daddy’s face.” You did as he asked, letting the pleasure take over your body.
Crying down with your release as he pushed his tongue inside, lapping up your juices. Groaning at your taste, shaking your body straight from the core.
When you came down from your release, you let go of his head. Lying down on the couch half naked in front of him with your dress around hips.
You looked like a mess.
“You look beautiful.” He said as he put back your underwear and helped you to fix your dress back.
You weren’t ready for the sudden compliment, having a hard time to process when somebody actually complimented you post-sex. “T-thank you.” He kissed your cheek.
He pulled his pants up, tucking his cock back inside his pants. Leaning down over the couch to scoop out his belt. “Uhm, the bathroom is at the end of the hall on the right. You cannot miss it.” You said as you got up from the couch, looking at how his beard was shining with your juices.
He blinked twice then got up. “Want anything to drink?” You asked as you got on your feet, pouring yourself a glass of water. “Yes, please.” He answered as he walked down your hall.
You heard the light switch in your bathroom, nodding to yourself. Your feet slowly dragging you to your open kitchen, legs still felt like a jello after your orgasm. You rested your hip on the counter taking a moment to close your eyes and process.
“You have a lovely place.” You jerked when you heard his voice. Didn’t hear his footsteps or the light switch of the bathroom.
You smiled as he came from the corner and sat down on your two person kitchen table. “Really? It’s a bit different from yours, I have plants which need water and better sunshine.” You said as you pointed your Chinese evergreen across from your couch. “I have tea, herbal tea, coffee, some white wine..”
“Just a coffee is fine.” You lifted your head to your open cupboard filled with colorful mugs and glasses, taking out a butter colored mug.
“And many colorful mugs, as I see…”
“Yeah I even had one that says ‘life is too short to use boring mugs’. Sadly my fridge and cupboards are not filled with many ingredients, it’s mostly frozen food in the fridge. I can’t cook for shit.” You opened your coffee jar, the smell of freshly grounded coffee beans surrounding the room.
He chuckled, “I can teach you, not everything maybe, but if there is something you want to learn. I'd be glad to help you.” You took out a fresh filter paper, placing it on your small machine.
You shrugged, the idea of him watching you prepare a simple coffee was already making your stomach twirl. “No, I just hate cooking. It’s more stressful when someone is watching me.” You explained as you closed the lid and flicked the switch of the machine.
“Now, you know how I felt about our first date.” His voice stood out from the grumbles of the machine.
You turned to him. Seeing him looking at you with those thick arms crossed at his chest, hair slicked back. He was a sight, and you cannot imagine him stressed even for a second. “Were you that stressed?”
“A bit. But I knew what I was doin’. I’ve lived alone for more than two decades, baby.” You nodded, remembering your first year of living alone. You had to google a lot of stuff and he didn’t even have that privilege back then.
“It hasn’t even been five years for me, so no pressure I guess.” You said as you poured his coffee. “My mum didn’t know how to cook until I was born, she says I’ll learn eventually and she is a great cook.” You handed him his mug. Sitting down on the chair across from him. “And your mum? Is she a great cook like you?”
“She was even a better cook than me. She had to feed three men. I don’t think it was easy back in the day as it seemed. There were many times that we were short on money, she mostly had to come up with stuff. I had to start working right after high school, support them for a while until it was my time to move out, then it was Tommy’s. Soon enough we came up with Miller Construction, and here we are.”
You nodded along as he explained, wondering what young Joel was like. Who did he hang out with? How did he spend his free time? Who was he dating back then?
Was he confused about his purpose in life as well?
The last one is too deep, don’t ask him that!
“I‘ve had a friend who was close with my landlady so that’s how I found the place. Then I decided to move out.”
More like a toxic ex than a friend.
“You’re lucky. It took me around three years just to find a place, but I also own my place so I guess that’s normal.”
“Kinda lucky. My landlady is a bitch to me…”
“Really?”
“She never helps me when there is something needs to be fixed. Creates a scene when I miss to pay the rent by one day. She used to snitch on me to my bo—“
You stopped yourself when you realized you almost break your rule.
Never mention your ex unless asked.
“She is not a good person basically.” You explained; raising up to place your now empty glass back to sink. Turned your back towards him to take a deep breath. Closing your eyes for a second when the familiar memory flashed in your mind.
You’d be stuck in that small place with your mum for the rest of your life without me.
“Have you thought about moving out?”
“Nope. My rent makes her tolerable, I can handle her if she gets though. I have claws too.”
“I see.” He said as he nodded along, taking a sip from his coffee. “Call me if you need my help. I’ve been told that I’m a very persuasive person.” You both chuckled at that.
He got up and placed his half empty mug next to yours. When he stood in your kitchen like that, all broad and tall, it felt like somehow he belonged there all along. In his casual fit jeans and dark green plaid flannel, holding your butter colored chubby mug, it felt like this was your casual evening.
“Living in a big city is tough for everybody.” He added, placing his hand next to your elbow on the kitchen counter. Fingers brushing up and down on your arm.
“Yeah. I will call you, if she gets on my nerves again. Maybe a fresh blood for the battle is better.”
“Yeah maybe.” He agreed. “I’d be glad to help you.” He said as he leant in, kissing you.
The kiss was small, you tasted yourself and the coffee before he took a step back. Leaning his forehead on yours, he gulped before opening his mouth.
“I really hate to say this but I better get going. Have some stuff to take care of.” He said before kissing your temple, walking back slowly as he made his way to door.
“Oh okay, let me walk you out.” You said as you followed him.
“When can I see you again? I assume your schedule is pretty tight, with the wedding and stuff.”
“Yeah it’s in less than 10 days, but I’m pretty much free. I have this dress rehearsal in two days and that’s pretty much it. That and the wedding of course.”
He nodded along as you explained. “I hope it’s not too early but I have a cabin. I’ll spend this month out there.”
You felt like your heart shattered when he said he’d be away for a month. “Oh, it seems nice.”
“It is. It’s good for relax and stuff.” There was a moment of silence, you scratched the back of your leg with your feet. Unable to form a sentence.
So was this a goodbye-goodbye? Would you be able to reach him when he is at the cabin?
“After the wedding I’d like to take you there actually. At least for a few days, I’m in between projects and usually I go there and spend some time away from the city.”
He wants you! He wants you there!
“I’ll check in with work, had some pending leave days, if I can use them…” He cut you short, already smiling like a kid with a treat when he got your answer.
“Okay, I’ll be waiting to hear from you.”
“Sure. Drive safe.”
“Will do,” He said as he gave you a kiss on the lips. You wrapped your arms around his neck, kissing him back. Giving him a nice goodbye before he marched down the stairs.
He felt like he was more alive then ever when you said yes to him, mentally planning the trip and made sure to go and check the cabin before he brought you there.
You felt like your heart was beating inside your chest when you closed the door. You brought your fingers to your lips, still feeling his lips there.

It was the first weekend after the Formula 1 season had ended. You woke up in the bed you usually slept in alone to see that for the first time in a while, your boyfriend was sound asleep on the other side of the bed. It was comforting to know he was home and that everything in your life was together again.
You sat up and looked to the foot of the bed, seeing that Jimmy and Sassy were curled up between you and Max's legs. Your heart filled with joy, knowing your whole little family was back together. You closed your eyes for a few more minutes, content with your current situation. But then you had the wonderful idea to make breakfast in bed for your boyfriend. He had just finished an intense season of racing where he had won his third world championship. You wanted to do something special for him.
You stretched and climbed out of bed, making your way to the kitchen. The cats followed you and you made sure to put some food in their bowls before getting to work on breakfast for your boyfriend. After investigating the fridge, you decided on some toast and eggs, simple but tasty.
It took you a few minutes to make it, but you then assembled all of the ingredients on a tray along with a glass of milk. Pleased with the results, you went into your bedroom to find that your boyfriend was no longer in bed. Instead, Max was standing up and fully dressed in exercise gear.
"Max..." you said with a sigh. "Why are you going jogging?"
"Because I need to stay in shape," he replied, matter of factly.
"But the season just ended? Surely you can have a lazy day?"
He looked at the plate of food in your hand. "Was that for me?"
"Yeah, I thought I'd make you breakfast in bed so you could relax after the season. A breakfast of champions."
His gaze softened and he smiled at you. "Well I guess I can enjoy that before I jog."
He sat down on the bed and you sat beside him, wanting to be close to your boyfriend after being apart for so long. You were willing to spend any moment with him that you could get, even if it was just watching him eat breakfast.
"Thank you, darling. I wasn't expecting you to make me breakfast."
"Just wanted to do something nice for my handsome, incredible boyfriend. But he almost ruined it by going for a jog on what should be a lazy day," you teased.
"Who said today was supposed to be lazy?"
"I did. I always spend Sundays being lazy, you know, staying cozy in the house before I go back to work on Monday. I always relax on the couch and watch movies or your races."
He seemed thoughtful. "Well Sunday is usually the least lazy day for me. Sundays are for racing."
"Not when you're on break."
Max looked you in the eye. "Well I guess one lazy Sunday won't hurt anyone. You mentioned relaxing and watching movies?"
"I sure did."
"That doesn't sound so bad anymore."
You smiled and hugged Max as he finished the last bite of his food. "Let me show you how it's done. But first you've got to change into comfy clothes and not fitness clothes."
You grabbed his plate and set it in the sink. You could wash it later on a less lazy day. For now, you needed to complete your movie setup. You closed the curtains over the windows that the sun was shining through and you turned on your faerie lights that were strung around your living room. You grabbed the bowl of snacks you kept in the kitchen for such lazy days and set it on your coffee table. Finally, you got out your favorite comfy blankets and set them on the couch. By the time Max had returned wearing sweatpants, everything was set up.
"Wow, you have quite the movie theater", Max commented.
"I set it up since summer break," you explained. "The cozy room makes lazy days just so much better."
"I agree," Max said, joining you where you were seated on the couch. "So what movie are we watching?"
"Maybe Gran Turismo? I heard that was good?"
Max smiled at you jokingly. "I thought Sunday's weren't about racing when I'm on break?"
You rolled your eyes. "This isn't what I meant. But we can watch something else instead? Maybe Top Gun? I love that movie and it's similar to racing?"
Max nodded. "Sounds good to me."
You queued up the movie and leaned back on the couch. Max shifted closer next to you and wrapped his arm around you. You leaned your head on his shoulder and watched as the introduction to the movie began to play. With his other arm, Max grabbed your hand. You stayed together like that, simply enjoying the comfort of each other as the movie played.
---
Later that day, you and Max were now laying horizontally on the couch. Your bodies were so tangled together that getting up would be a struggle later. You were three movies into your movie marathon and you had not stood up from the couch once.
"You were right," Max mumbled into your ear.
"What do you mean?"
"Lazy days are great. Maybe I should spend less days worried about constantly training and more days curled up here with you."
"I would love that, Max."
"Just like I love you."

Osano Najime
He is stupidly good at playground games (like rock paper scissors, go fish, etc) to the point where nobody wanted to play with him as a kid because they knew he'd win.
Favorite Pixar movie is inside out.
He actually is really good friends with Hanako. They both spend a ridiculous amount of money on blind bags together. And whenever Osano goes to the store he keeps an eye out for ones Hanako would like.
And Hanako has made him a friendship bracelet, which Osano being the tsundere he is, promptly pretended to hate it but still wears it as an anklet to this day.
Has helped organize fund raisers for local animal shelters and veterinary emergency rooms.
I feel like he has contact lenses and wore glasses in middle school. Whenever he's doing his judgemental stare his friends if he's put his contacts in that day.
He gets really into decorating and customizing his phone, like changes his whole layout, stick, phone charms, pop socket, app overlays, wallpaper, depending on what season it is.
Reads shojo manga but pretends to hate it.
^ his favorite is fruits basket

Amao Odayaka
One time he was at his great grandma's house making sourdough bread, and he accidentally slammed it on the old wooden counter so hard that he made a hole which the dough fell through to the cabinet shelf below. So not only did he break a counter he also had to scrap the whole batch. That memory haunts him and keeps him up at night.
Impulsively buys every apron he sees. He has a whole section of his closet purely dedicated to aprons.
Favorite movie is ratatouille, naturally.
He is uh, a little dense when it comes to social cues. He's nice don't get me wrong, just he isn't very good at getting sarcasm.
His favorite deserts to make are macarons and pound cake.
He has a love-hate relationship with the Gordon Ramsay show 'Hell's Kitchen' because he gets ridiculously mad at the condition the kitchens are always in. But he loves seeing the before and afters.
He runs the cooking club like a pirate ship tbh, he usually has to break up fights between the members. Except for Saki because she minds her own beeswax.

Kizano Sunobu
He has played many, many, roles in theater such as: The Wicked Stepmother From Cinderella, The Phantom of the opera, The Rat King, King George the third in Hamilton, and many more.
He can sing quite well, and took gymnastics lessons as a child so he could very much be considered a quadruple threat. (Singing, Acting, Dancing, and Acrobatics.)
Went to a preforming arts high school, but due to his family moving he had to transfer to Akademi.
His favorite animated movies are Leap! And Anastasia. Although he does have a love for old Disney aesthetics.
He has quite sensitive skin, being allergic to glycerin, so he has to be very particular about what products he buys.
Kizano plans on becoming a Broadway actor once he graduates, and because of that he is fluent in both Japanese and english, and is working on learning Spanish.
He really appreciates the club members who are stage hands, always making sure to thank them after every show.
While he is cocky, egotistical, and down right self centered at times, he does truly appreciate his club members.
He has some, interesting opinions on the other club leaders...
He likes and appreciates Amao, mainly because they both have an unyielding passion for their respective fields.
He hates and despises Asuo, because he finds him too relaxed and annoyingly positive.
He in fact does not know Oko exists.
Oko Ruto
Is very good at sewing due in part to the fact he likes to replace the button hole embroidery on his white shirts to a beige tone and the buttons to match his eyes, making it look like his buttons are eyeballs. Also because sewing comes in handy for occult/supernatural shenanigans.
Likes to visit graveyards to see if there's any intriguing tomb stones. Like funny last words, statues of the dead, intriguing ways a person died, ect.
^ he is very respectful though, only really approaching graves that are particularly old.
The occult club does more than just stalking students and summoning demons. they also practice ways to tell the future, speak to ghosts, birth chart and palm readings, and alien investigation night. (Held every other Tuesday.)
He watches BuzzFeed unsolved supernatural. Because weirdly enough true crime gives him the creeps but not ghosts and ghouls.
His favorite animated movies are, Spirited Away, Alice in wonderland, and Paranorman.
His father was a paranormal investigator, but has major Dale Gribble vibes so safe to say he runs an occult goods shop with tarot cards, oujia boards, future reading tea and eggs, and more now after being 'encouraged to retire'.
His mother is a practicing psychic who was actually brought in to help solve the murders at Akademi. She now runs an in store future reading service. Personality wise she's very much so like Jessica Rabbit, sweet charming, and a showman at heart.
Asuo Rito
This man seems like a golden retriever and he is, but sweet Lord does he not actually process his emotions. Everytime he gets upset over something he just throws himself further into training regiments.
Has like seven dogs currently and overall in his life he's had twenty.
Enjoys all sports but knows he should be focusing on just one, but he just can't pick. He enjoys track and field best, but that could just because that's what he wins the most medals for....
Took one martial arts lesson when he was ten and Budo accidentally broke his nose. Swore off martials arts ever since.
Speaking of which, childhood friends with Budo, although at first they didn't like each other because they were on opposing soccer teams.
He in fact does not know Kizano has one sided beef with him. He thinks of all the club leaders as his friends, except Kaga, he finds him creepy.
Favorite animated movie is the Incredibles.
Man is his and his teams own cheerleader, doing full on chants and cartwheels at swim meets.
^ has accidentally cartwheeled into the pool, DURING A RACE.
Mujo Kano
This man would make a better mortician than a nurse! He always gets hung up on fixing patients hair rather than filling out important paperwork.
Studying to be a pediatrician, specifically specializing in infants.
Has an unhealthy build a bear problem. He builds a bear every week and they have invaded his couch, bed, and shelves.
He is a walking disaster. Someone save him.
Osoro Shidesu
Chain smoker, no further elaboration.
He's weirdly stoic, like definitely not a party person, despite being a delinquent hooligan he reminds sorta like an old timey knight.
Rbf to the max, man came into this world with a scowl. There's not a single picture of him in his childhood where he doesn't look like a hell spawn.
Good at cooking in the same way a shady Denny's chef is good at cooking. Like cigarette in hand, cussing under his breath, while making the best funfeitti pancakes known to man.
It brings joy to his grinchy little soul to see a slug bug. Like in ironically giggles when he sees one.
Also thinks clowns are hilarious. In another life he'd be a shady circus owner.
He either has the cutest softest smile known to man, or the creepiest smirk ever.
Favorite animated movie, Up and lady and the tramp.
At his core he does believe in fairness. If a guy is harassing a waitress he won't hesitate to take him outside iykyk.
Hanako Yamada
Has gotten his arm stuck in an arcade machine after trying to just grab the plushie he wanted. The fire station was called and had to help get him out.
Wears keychains on his belt loops of his favorite characters like Keroppi, Hello Kitty and Mimi, and Happy from fairy tail.
Is actually not that social around those he doesn't know, personally I like to think he has some form of social anxiety which prevents from getting close to many people.
The reason why he dresses so cutely is that he figured that even if people stared at him, at least he'd know why rather than just being clueless.
Favorite animated movie is the toy story saga which he cries to every time he rewatches.
Really enjoys playing matchmaker with people he knows, for example in middle school he introduced his aunt to his homeroom teacher, leading for them to get married three years later.
Loves playing animal Crossing (and spending a ridiculous amount on leaf tickets in pocket camp)
Has an absurd amount of plushies, except he does know how to stack them properly to make it seem like he only has a few.
Is studying to be an architect or interior designer, he hasn't quite decided yet but he hopes to someday make homes that'll reflect his clients essence.
Has two pet hamsters, Hamtaro and Hamantha.
Megamo Saikou
Denser than cement when it comes to how much things cost. Not like business expenses because he's been trained for that, but he does think a loaf of bread costs twenty bucks.
Was a premature baby and had a heart problem causing him to be rushed into surgery nearly immediately after being born.
Would be studying to be a brain surgeon if he wasn't set in stone to inherit the company.
Actually rather appreciates the arts, such as art galleries and musical theater.
Favorite animated movie is sleeping beauty.
Likes to people watch, he finds it amusing to see how others live.
Is a horrible cook, like cannot make box Mac n cheese.

Figure You Out
Dean Winchester x fem!Reader/You | WC: 671
Summary: Dean doesn’t care for the latest guy you’ve been seeing.
Tags/Warnings: No use of Y/N, fluff, jealous!Dean, hurt/comfort, no beta we die like men
Now Playing: Figure You Out by Voila
A/N: This is such a nostalgic reminder of where I started when it came to writing. All of my initial stories were songfics. So as a nod back to my roots, have a drabble heavily inspired by the song above. Title comes from the song.
Dean Winchester wasn’t a jealous man.
He didn’t deserve good things, so there was no reason for him to be envious over things he knew he couldn’t have. So when you started seeing whatever that chucklefuck’s name was, he didn’t care. You seemed happy, and that’s all that mattered.
The first time you came home wearing a fancy little gold necklace Chucklefuck had given you, Dean’s jaw had tightened, and he couldn’t help but think about how he knew you preferred silver. It was a completely rational preference. Silver had more practical uses than gold. Any hunter in their right might would want to keep a solid piece of silver with them, and you were one of the most reasonable hunters he had met. You had toyed with the pendant on the end of the chain – what even was it? A bird? Didn’t matter. It was decidedly the worst gift Chucklefuck could’ve gotten you. A silver necklace with a cross as the pendant would’ve been your preference. Beautiful but still practical. Just like you.
He figured that it wouldn’t last long. You never brought him around to the bunker which meant you weren’t really interested in him. Dean wagered that you’d be sick of him by the third date.
That was four dates ago.
Dean ran a hand over his face, pacing back and forth in his room. You had come back from your date just in time to join him and Sam for dinner, and of course Sam had to ask how it went. Chucklefuck had taken you to a fancy movie theater with reclining chairs to see some new romantic comedy that had just come out. Even as you smiled while you spoke about it, Dean knew that that wasn’t at all what you liked. You and him had spent several nights in the Dean Cave watching back to back B-horror films, all the while you were giggling beside him at the low-budget special effects. It was like Chucklefuck didn’t even know you.
Didn’t know how you liked to play roulette with a diner menu and pick a meal at random to “keep life exciting,” as if life as a hunter wasn’t exciting enough. Didn’t know that you preferred lever action rather than pump action guns simply because they made you feel “more badass.” Didn’t know that you would prefer a cold beer to a glass of wine any day because “grapes taste better when they’re sweet.”
He hated it.
So when you came back to the bunker one evening, eyes red from crying, Dean was ready to go after some kneecaps.
“Did he hurt you?” he asked, his voice low and dangerous.
“No, it’s fine, Dean,” you said, moving to push past him and into the kitchen. He caught you in his arms, pulling you close. “He and I are done.”
“I told you he didn’t deserve you,” he mumbled, holding you tightly against his chest. You sniffled and trembled in his grasp, and he held you tighter.
“Just let it be. It’s fine,” you repeated.
“No, he’s a goddamn prick who has no idea what he just gave up!”
You pushed against him, leaning back slightly to look him in the eye.
“He didn’t end it. I did.” Dean frowned slightly.
“Why’s that?”
“He wasn’t–” you cleared your throat. “I was setting unrealistic standards. It wasn’t fair to him, constantly comparing him to someone he could never be.”
“And… who were you comparing him to?” Dean asked slowly. He searched your face for something – anything – that might have given him a glimmer of hope. Maybe, just maybe, his name was somewhere on your tongue. There was an awkward beat of silence between the two of you.
“You, Dean.” His name tumbled from your lips, loaded with more than he could ever let himself dream about. He kissed you, soft and sweet and gentle. You melted into his touch, and Dean allowed himself to believe for just a fleeting moment that maybe he was allowed one good thing in the world.

Thank you for reading, please feel free to leave a like, comment, or reblog! I would be forever grateful! 💜💜💜

Theory of Love Episode 1: Dear Dakanda
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/daf022d7e1d46dafdac03dc3f49ede59/b4b458e6f85cfdd2-17/s540x810/fda527e5d5610c14fcb4052aeb19e387ed5a566d.jpg)
And we're off! We begin this week with a 2005 romcom classic from Thailand: Dear Dakanda (the Thai title is more like "Close Friend"). The plot, in brief:
Mhoo buzzes off his luscious mane of hair and heads south to hit the beach. An accident on a boat lands him in the hospital with a broken leg and flirting with a local nurse, Nui, and as he gets to know her we flash back to his uni days in Chiang Mai to see what he's running from: Dakanda, the girl he met during Freshy games, fell in love with, and stayed close friends with while pining after her hopelessly throughout college. In the end, he ends up confessing only via letters after he already gave up and ran away, and the film ends on an ambiguous note.
For those who have seen TOL, I think the parallels here are fairly obvious, and the posters above confirm: Mhoo's story is Third's story. Like Mhoo, Third never says a word about his feelings, choosing to keep it to himself and cry and rage alone. And similar to Khai in these early episodes, Dakanda seems totally oblivious to her friend's feelings as she enjoys spending time with him.*
*There's another parallel to a Thai BL here: Nui is clearly an inspiration for Tharn in I Told Sunset About You! I won't get into that as it's off topic for this discussion. But it's fun to watch old Thai media and newly understand how shows we love were referencing it.
This movie is so much about how Mhoo hurt himself with his slience for years, and ultimately gave up without giving Dakanda a chance to even respond to his confession. Unfortunately, Third doesn't seem to have learned anything from watching it. We hear in his review of the film that he romanticizes--and ends up emulating--Mhoo's behavior rather than recognizing that Mhoo set himself up to fail and things might have gone differently if he was willing to be more honest with his friend. As @bengiyo pointed out, the fact that Third gets caught up in these heterosexual romance films and takes all the wrong lessons from them is part of the conflict at the heart of this story. I love how the show signals that by pointing us to this film right at the start. And with its story over the next 12 weeks, TOL will be in dialogue with this film, ultimately rejecting the notion that Mhoo's refusal to communicate and ambiguous ending was romantic.
As for this first episode, I love how it drops us right in the middle of Third's dramatic pining spiral as it sets up the world of the show. One of the things the show is super clear on is that Khai's player behavior, while kind of dickish, is fairly normal and accepted--Two and Bone act exactly the same way--and Third is only pressed about it because of his feelings. But as the film framing this episode signals, Third never says anything, just gets increasingly resentful as Khai keeps unwittingly reminding him that they are not on the same page.
And of course, he makes it worse for himself by agreeing to help Khai deal with his exes, a truly self-destructive choice that only fuels his jealousy. And every time Khai behaves selfishly or thoughtlessly or does anything to remind Third that their feelings are not mutual, his anger only grows, but Third can't help but press on it like a bruise. I groaned when Third went to catch Khai at the theater with the date he ditched him for; stop torturing yourself, my guy! For his part, Khai has some maturing to do, as he is far too willing to be an ass to his friends in the name of hooking up, and he also just doesn't get that he is constantly hurting Third's feelings by treating him so casually. But for the first half of the show, we are firmly in Third's story and perspective, and I'm excited to see him get to the end of his rope.
Tagging in my other watch partners in case they have anything to add: @neuroticbookworm @solitaryandwandering and @twig-tea.

silly goose | kwon soonyoung
hiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii we're back baby. genre is: crack. fake dating sort of. friends to ??? basically in love i guess. everyone is an idiot and it's awesome. warnings: reader is implied to be female, wears a dress, does hair and makeup, reader is briefly followed in a menacing kind of way, soonyoung is literally the most dumbest man ever but in the BEST way, reader's friends are quite honestly the actual worst, there is a rather frightening animal encounter that's mostly just funny but could be triggering if you're afraid of birds, lmk if there's anything else i forgot!!! word count: 8.3k
If one was to look up the definition of disappointment, you’re almost positive they’d see a picture of your mom’s face if she ever found out you were in this situation. You’re disappointed in yourself. It was never your plan to be in a loud, crowded club, smushed up against the bar by two large bikers who are bouncing up and down to the beat of the music so that the spikes on the back of the taller one’s jacket get dangerously close to your eyeball. And yet, here you are.
You desperately search the room for the group of very tipsy women you came here with, but they’re nowhere to be found. Scowling, you start to inch out from behind the bikers into a slightly more open space, but even with your improved vantage point, you don’t see them. You curse. Did they really leave you here?
It’s hard for you to understand why you were even invited to this bachelorette party. The bride is your childhood best friend, but you’ve been out of touch for years. Your lives went in completely different directions after high school, clearly evidenced by the predicament in which you currently find yourself. Where you had never been the life of the party, she seemed to have no life without a party. You found yourself wishing for the thousandth time you could be at home with your books and your remote and your cat.
You decide there’s nothing for it and head outside to try and call your friend. She picks up on the third ring, and her voice is slurred and barely distinguishable over the cacophony of sound in the background of the call. You think she’s saying that they’re taking a bus to a bar across town -- about an hour away from where you are now. To get there, you’d have to call a cab and pay almost $100, or you could walk to your apartment, which is three blocks from here. “I’m going to go home,” you tell her, and she laughs and agrees and hangs up.
You grimace at your phone screen and shiver slightly. It’s a chilly night, and you didn’t bring a jacket, so you decide it’s best if you start walking. The way home is well-lit and relatively crime free, so you aren’t nervous as you set off from the club.
That is, until you notice someone is tailing you. He’s a taller man, with scruffy facial hair and red-rimmed eyes that scare you. As you glance over your shoulder, he calls after you. “Where are you headed?” he asks.
“Going to meet my boyfriend,” you claim, desperately trying to shake him off. He seems to be picking up speed, slowly gaining on you as you walk, and as you round a corner you see a group of three well-dressed men standing in front of the movie theater just ahead. “That’s him right there,” you say, pointing at them, and the man trailing after you only picks up his speed, so you make the risky choice to jog toward them and grab ahold of the nearest man’s arm. He has his back toward you, but as you wrap your hand around his bicep, he turns to look at you.
Oh, wow, you think. Because you couldn’t have chosen a hotter man to pretend to be your boyfriend -- unless, of course, you were to have chosen either of his friends. It was strange to be surrounded by so many extremely attractive men, almost like interrupting a model meetup. But you quickly recover, smiling at the man whose arm you grabbed and saying, “Hi, honey.”
You try to communicate with your eyes, and though the man at first looks confused, he glances over your head and sees the man who’d been following you and his eyes light with understanding. “Hello, muffin!” he shouts far too loudly.
You wince. Muffin? you think to yourself. But still, you can’t help but be amused as he puts an arm around you and sends an angry look at the man. “This is my girlfriend,” he yells at him.
“You’re being way too obvious, dude,” one of your fake boyfriend’s friends hisses at him.
“I call BS,” the stalker says, to your horror and surprise. “What’s her name?”
“Mildred,” your fake boyfriend says with no hesitation.
You try not to let the shock of this answer register on your face.
The stalker hesitates. “Is he really your boyfriend, Mildred?”
You bite your lip to keep from laughing at the ridiculousness of it all. “Uh, yep.”
“Oh, okay then,” the stalker says. The three of you stare at each other for awhile before he turns around and leaves.
“I cannot believe that worked,” one of your fake boyfriend’s friends says, smacking his forehead.
“Remind me never to call you in a crisis,” the other one says, chuckling.
“What do you mean?” your fake boyfriend says indignantly. He looks at you, as though wanting your opinion, his arms still around you. “I feel like we nailed that.”
You can’t help but smile at him. He really is unfairly pretty, with perfectly tousled black hair, an artful slit in one eyebrow, and a smile that has you wondering if maybe you do believe in love at first sight. “Thanks for helping me out,” you say, so you don’t have to lie and agree that he nailed it. “Do I really look like a Mildred, though?”
“Mildred is a lovely name,” he says matter-of-factly. “And you are lovely.”
You laugh, feeling a little hot around the collar. “And what’s your name?” you ask him, holding out your hand for him to shake.
He takes it and shakes it with a warm smile. “I’m Soonyoung,” he says. He releases you from his grip with a small shake, as though reminding himself to do it. As if he’d gotten lost in you for a second.
“Soonyoung,” you repeat. “And your friends?”
“Seungkwan,” the shorter of the two others says.
“Seokmin,” the taller one replies.
“Soonyoung, Seungkwan, Seokmin,” you chant. “Well, thanks so much for your help, guys. I need to get home to my cat.”
“By yourself?” Seokmin says in a worried tone.
“In the dark?” Seungkwan follows, equally worried.
“Without a jacket?” Soonyoung says, his brow furrowed in concern.
“Well...” you say. “It’s not very far.”
“How far?” Seungkwan asks.
You hesitate. “How do I know you’re not serial killers?”
They all blink at you. “Us?” Seokmin asks.
“We’re idiots,” Soonyoung says sincerely.
They all nod in agreement. “Seriously. If we were serial killers, we’d be caught in no time,” Seungkwan says.
“Let us walk you home,” Soonyoung insists. “I want to meet your cat.”
You’re still a bit nervous, but they keep a respectful distance as they walk you down the next two and a half blocks to your apartment building. You quickly realize that they weren’t lying.
They are actually idiots.
The entire fifteen minute walk, Seungkwan and Seokmin are arguing about whether or not tomatoes are a fruit, culminating in Soonyoung opining that if tomatoes are a fruit, ketchup is a smoothie. The other two are (understandably) outraged by this, leaving you comforted that you actually could probably take all three of them in a fight at once, seeing as how they all seem to share one single brain cell.
There’s something so endearing about their banter, though. So much so that when you finally arrive at the apartment, you find yourself asking if they want to come in for a minute and escape the chilly weather.
“Are you sure?” Seokmin asks.
“Positive. I have some instant ramen we could make, too. Just to warm you up. As a thank you for getting me home safe.”
They look at each other and then nod. “We’d love to,” Seungkwan says.
So you lead them up to your door on the third floor. “Your apartment is so cute!” Soonyoung exclaims, admiring the pretty crocheted decorations that line your walls. “I love these.”
“Thanks,” you say. “I made them.”
He looks at you in awe. “You did? That’s so cool!”
“I’m glad you think so,” you say with a smile.
“What do you do for work?” Soonyoung asks you.
“I’m a social worker,” you tell him. “I work with families in tough situations. Help them get their feet under them.”
“Do you work for the government, then?” asks Seungkwan.
“Make yourself at home,” you tell the three of them, who are standing awkwardly in the entry. As they settle onto the couch, you explain, “I actually work for a subcontractor of the government. We’re a nonprofit. On weekends, we also do a soup kitchen, and help run food banks throughout the county.”
“That must be very fulfilling work,” Seokmin points out. “Do you like it? I hear it can be tiring.”
“It’s good, but I don’t get paid enough,” you admit. “And before you ask, I do have a roommate. She’s just in the hospital. Appendicitis.”
They all wince, and Seungkwan hums sympathetically. You head to your pantry and rummage around looking for the instant ramen, finally locating it and putting a pan on the stove with water. Meanwhile, the guys find your box full of games and pull out the Monopoly. “We should play this!” Seokmin says.
Seungkwan laughs. “We just met her, and you already want to ruin our friendship?”
Soonyoung pulls out a deck of cards. “How about Scum?”
The three of them set up the game while you make the ramen, and by the time you’re all served up all the cards have been dealt. You watch them over your own bowl of ramen, amused at the gusto with which they eat and heartwarmed by their compliments. You’re generally a bit of an introvert, but even you have been lonely the past few days with your roommate gone, and the unexpected company is warm, inviting, and friendly.
Until Scum begins. Unbeknownst to you, this group of three is the most cutthroat, merciless group of players who have ever lived. Their competition knows no bounds, and they seem determined to destroy each other, by whatever means necessary. “Don’t worry,” Seokmin whispers conspiratorially to you while Soonyoung and Seungkwan argue tooth-and-nail about a minor rule of the game. “They’re always like this, but they really do love each other.”
It takes all of them by surprise when you are the first to get rid of your cards, guaranteeing you the “king” spot. “That came out of nowhere!” complains Seungkwan.
You shrug. “I’m good with strategy games. Never challenge me to a game of Settlers of Catan,” you joke.
Just then, your cat pokes his head around the corner and mewls reproachfully at all the noise you’re making. “Hi!” Soonyoung says excitedly, quickly dropping his cards to head over to the cat, making little cooing noises at him as he strokes his soft orange fur. “What’s its name?”
“He’s a he,” you tell him. “And his name is Tiger.”
The three men all freeze and look at you. “What?” you ask, looking around at them in worry.
“No way,” Soonyoung breathes.
Seungkwan groans. “You’ve really done it now.”
“What did I do?” you ask, bewildered.
“That’s like, the forbidden word,” Seokmin says, his tone apologetic.
Your eyes land on Soonyoung, whose entire face has lit up. “I love tigers,” he says, looking on the verge of tears.
“Love is an understatement,” Seungkwan says. “He is about to ask for your hand in marriage.”
“Will you marry me?” Soonyoung asks immediately afterward, making you laugh. His hands are still gently cupping Tiger’s face, his thumbs rubbing the cat’s fur back tenderly.
“I barely know you, Soonyoung,” you remind him. “You’ll have to pretend to be my boyfriend a couple more times before I’ll agree to marriage.”
“Bet,” Soonyoung says. “This cat needs a father. There’s nothing sadder than a fatherless cat.”
You privately disagreed, but it makes you laugh again all the same. “When am I ever going to need you to pretend to be my boyfriend?”
Soonyoung tsks. “I’m sure we could think of something.”
But almost as soon as you’d asked the question, you remembered: the wedding.
Your friend’s wedding -- the one who’d abandoned you tonight. And the one who, against your wishes, had invited your horrible ex-boyfriend. You’d had a plus-one — your roommate, who you’d enlisted to make the entire event endurable. But last-minute, her sister had needed help babysitting her daughter while she went to a divorce hearing on the day of the wedding. The wedding was in two weeks, and you didn’t have a backup date.
Soonyoung watches in satisfaction as your face falls. “Tell me,” he says. “How can I be of service?”
“Well…you can say no,” you preface, and he chuckles. “But...”
You launch into the story of the night. Soonyoung, Seungkwan, and Seokmin listen well throughout it, making noises of exasperation and annoyance as you explain why you’d had to interrupt their evening by pretending to be Soonyoung’s girlfriend. “They really left you there?” Soonyoung asks, frowning. He seems to tire of crouching by Tiger, so he sits crosslegged on the ground. You watch carefully as Tiger gingerly climbs into Soonyoung’s lap -- something it took him almost a year to do with you. Tiger is an affectionate and social cat, but he does take some time to warm up, usually. But something about Soonyoung seems to have put him at ease. Soonyoung doesn’t even seem to notice, absently massaging his fingers into Tiger’s neck fur.
“They really did,” you finally reply, oddly touched by the sight of Soonyoung with your cat.
“You need better friends,” Seungkwan says indignantly.
You give him a weak smile. “You’re probably right about that. But I already said I’d go, and they’ve planned for me. So it’d be bad to back out now.” You sigh. “It would be so nice to have someone to go with who’s friendly. And you can totally say no if that’s too much awkwardness to put up with for an evening.”
“Well, I have no problems with going if it means I get to spend more time with your cat in between now and then,” Soonyoung says, tickling Tiger’s stomach and giggling as Tiger swats at his fingers.
“You can always come see my cat whenever you want,” you promise him. “Even if you say no.”
“Really?” he asks, sounding thrilled. “I mean, I’m saying yes, though.”
You let out a deep breath. “Thank you so much. You’re such a lifesaver.”
“I know. Imagine the poor decisions this cat would’ve made if I hadn’t decided to be his dad.”
“I resent the implication that I am a horrible mother who can’t raise a cat to be a good citizen who makes positive contributions to society.”
“Yeah, you psycho, respect this single mother!” Seungkwan says, smacking Soonyoung’s arm.
“Well, you’re partially right,” you admit with a laugh. “Tiger is a war criminal with warrants in 32 countries.”
Soonyoung laughs as well. “See! Fatherless behavior.”
“Plenty of cats grow up to be respectable without fathers,” you say indignantly. “Just not Tiger. He’s possessed of a devil.”
The four of you all have a good laugh about this, while Tiger chirps indignantly at the sudden sound, clambering out of Soonyoung’s lap and darting down the hallway. “Traitor!” Soonyoung calls after him, heading back to the card table to finish playing.
By the time the trio bows themselves out of your apartment, you feel warm and sleepy. It’s been a long time since you’ve had people over to your house and enjoyed it — you had forgotten how nice it was.
******
“Hey there,” you greet your friend Ginger, who waves at you from her hospital bed.
“Hi,” she says back. “How was the bachelorette party?”
“A complete disaster, as predicted,” you tell her, pulling up a chair next to her bed. “When are you coming home?”
“Tonight, if things go well,” she informs you. “But you said you had something to tell me. Is it good or bad?”
“It’s good,” you say with a shy smile.
“How good?” she asks with a raised eyebrow.
“Like, weird-good.”
“Explain.”
“I found a date for tomorrow.”
Her eyes go wide. “You caught someone’s eye? During the bachelorette party?”
“No, after. Well, actually, the guy whose eye I caught was a total creep. But then I forced a different dude to be my fake boyfriend to shake off the first dude, and he agreed to be my date to the wedding.”
“Is he gonna pretend to be your boyfriend there too?” she asks, a suggestive edge to her voice.
“I don’t think so. I mean, we just talked about him coming with me so I wouldn’t have to go alone.”
“How did that even come up?” she asks you.
“Well, they kind of walked me home...”
“They?”
“There were three of them initially,” you explain apologetically.
“You let three random strangers walk you home?”
“Well, they openly admitted to being idiots when I asked if they were serial killers, so I thought it was probably safe.”
“You’re an idiot,” Ginger says dryly.
“Anyway, Soonyoung -- the one who’s gonna be my date -- wanted to meet Tiger. Because he loves tigers. And then it kind of devolved into playing Scum, and then Soonyoung claimed that if he just spent more time with Tiger he’d stop committing dastardly crimes every chance he gets. And then he asked if I’d need a fake boyfriend so that he could help me raise my cat right, and it was this whole thing, and now that I’m telling you the story it sounds really dumb but it was kind of sweet.”
Ginger is staring at you with raised eyebrows during this whole account. When you finally clam up, she sighs. “So, I hate to be the person to have to tell you this, but Soonyoung is actually in love with you.”
“What?” you gasp. “Why do you think that?”
“He is using your cat to get closer to you because he’s too scared to really ask you out because he really likes you.”
“I’m not sure that’s true. You should’ve seen his face when he heard the cat was named Tiger.”
Ginger rolls her eyes. “Girl, I know more about men than I care to admit. This is textbook crush behavior.” She grunts as she adjusts her position. “And I think you like him back, too.”
“I barely know him,” you protest, heat rising in your cheeks.
“Is he hot?” she asks shrewdly.
“Yes,” you answer, without hesitation or even a single iota of forethought. You cringe at your own obviousness, and Ginger laughs.
“It’s okay,” she reassures. “But how hot?”
You consider for a while before answering. “It’s hard to describe,” you complain, feeling more and more uncomfortable the longer it takes. “He’s...pretty.”
“A pretty boy?” Ginger repeats.
“No, like, he doesn’t look dainty -- but he’s not rugged or anything. But he doesn’t exactly look soft either. But he’s not quite all the way to edgy.” You realize you’re rambling once you catch sight of Ginger’s face.
Ginger shakes her head. “You’re a goner,” she sighs.
Conveniently, your phone starts buzzing before you can respond -- not that you really had a response anyway. It’s an unknown number, but you decide to answer it. “Hello?” you say.
“Hi,” a familiar voice chirps on the other end. Your eyes go wide, and you mouth “Soonyoung” to Ginger, who is observing curiously.
“Hi!!!” you respond back, and then wince -- you were a little too eager, and Ginger makes a face at you too. You resolve to be much cooler going forward, and take a deep breath to steady yourself.
“Hi,” he says again, this time sounding amused. “What’s up?”
“Hi. Um, nothing much,” you reply. “What’s up with you?” Wow, what a zinger! you think to yourself. Why did you choose this moment to become an awkward fumbling mess?
“Well, I’m near your apartment, and I was wondering if you were home. I missed Tiger, you see.”
“Ah,” you say. “Well, um, I’m actually...out right now?” Your voice raises a few notes too high at the end of your phrase, and Ginger is pinching the bridge of her nose in exasperation, trying to fight back a laugh.
“Ah, that’s bad luck. Where are you?” Soonyoung asks.
“I’m just visiting my roommate in the hospital,” you say, confused as Ginger frantically shakes her head and makes an X with her hands.
“Tell him you were just leaving and you’ll be there soon,” she hisses, pushing you with her foot off of her hospital bed.
“Oh, how is she doing?” Soonyoung asks. “Is she feeling better?”
“She’s absolutely fine,” you grunt, trying to fend off Ginger’s attacks and failing, slumping off the bed onto the floor. “I was actually on my way home, though. Do you have time to wait?” You stand and snatch your bag from off the small table in the room and stick your tongue out at Ginger, who blows you a kiss and waves enthusiastically as you leave.
“Yes,” Soonyoung responds immediately. “Actually, are you hungry? I brought some chicken.”
“I’m actually starving,” you answer honestly. “I’ll be there in ten minutes.”
True to your word, you sprint all the way out of the hospital and almost all the way home, stopping around the corner to your place to try and catch your breath and look cool when you see Soonyoung. Ginger’s words bounce around your brain in a disconcerting way, and you feel like you’re sweaty and flustered in a way that no amount of time stalling could really fix. So you decide to just bite the bullet and turn the corner.
You can see Soonyoung waiting at the door to your apartment building. When he catches sight of you, his whole face lights up in a smile. And oh, what a smile it is. You have to physically restrain yourself from squealing at how obscenely adorable he is -- his eyes softening into crescents, his cheeks going all round and his nose scrunching just slightly. You can’t help but smile back as you finally reach him. “Hey,” you say, going for a breezy, cool vibe and missing the mark embarrassingly.
“Hi,” Soonyoung says, and to your comfort, he sounds just as eager as you did on the phone. “Um, how was the walk?”
“It was great! Super chill, super lowkey,” you lie through your teeth, thinking about how you had sprinted in a very not-chill, not-lowkey way to come see him.
“That’s good!” he exclaims back.
“What were you doing near my house?” you ask, leading him toward the door.
“Oh, well, actually, I had to go visit this restaurant my friend works at,” he says, stuttering a little. “And he actually made extra chicken, so I thought -- well, and I knew you lived close by, so I thought it would be fun if we...I don’t know, got to know each other before the wedding?” He shrugs cutely.
“You can just say you wanted to see my cat,” you tease, pressing the elevator button.
“I did, on the phone,” he reminds you.
“Oh,” you say.
“Oh,” he replies.
The two of you stare at each other for a minute.
Then, Soonyoung says, “Why are we so awkward?”
He doesn’t sound worried -- he even has a laugh in his voice. And for some reason, the easiness with which he addresses the strange tension in the air seems to dissipate it a bit.
“I’m sorry,” you say with a laugh. “I’m not very good with surprises. I never know how to react. But I’m very glad you’re here.” Finally, the sincerity of the words shines through, and though you normally would’ve been embarrassed at the admission, you aren’t.
He smiles that brilliant smile yet again, and your heart does a little happy-dance in your chest. “Me too,” he replies fervently.
“What do you do for work?” you ask him as the two of you board the elevator. “I never asked, before.”
“Oh, that. I’m actually a kindergarten teacher,” he tells you.
You are gobsmacked at this information. “You don’t look like a teacher,” you tell him.
“Oh yeah? What do I look like?” he asks, striking a ridiculous pose.
You giggle. “A rockstar, maybe. Or a band manager.”
“Thank you, I think,” Soonyoung says.
“You’re welcome,” you say with emphasis. “It was a compliment.”
The two of you chat aimlessly all the way into your apartment, where Soonyoung immediately starts calling for Tiger. “Your daddy’s home,” he bellows into the empty apartment. “Where are you, son?”
You absolutely know the neighbors must have heard him, but your brief embarrassment is soothed when Tiger comes tearing around the corner, coming to a screeching halt at Soonyoung’s feet. “He never does that,” you say, in awe of this overt affection from your normally skittish-around-strangers cat.
“He knows who I am,” Soonyoung says, bending down to pick up Tiger and cradle him in his arms like a baby. “My son,” he coos, tickling his belly and laughing when Tiger bats at his fingers with his paws.
You catch yourself before Soonyoung can tear his attention away from Tiger, knowing you were probably staring at them with heart-eyes. Shaking yourself, you open the box of chicken Soonyoung left on the counter. “Do you mind? I actually haven’t eaten today.”
Soonyoung’s gaze snaps to you. “It’s like four in the afternoon!” he exclaims indignantly. “What do you mean, you haven’t eaten today?”
“Well, I woke up kind of late, and then I was running around doing important errands, and then I had to go see my friend,” you explain. “I kind of forgot.”
He tsks in annoyance. “Well, you need to take care of yourself too. How am I supposed to co-parent this cat with you if you pass away from malnutrition?”
“You are so dramatic,” you laugh. “This doesn’t happen very often. I promise I’m a regular eater.”
He eyes you suspiciously. “Okay. You’d better be.”
You dig into the chicken while you watch Soonyoung play with Tiger. “Holy cow!” you exclaim. “This is amazing.”
“I’ll tell my friend you said so. You should go to his restaurant, it’s right across the street from you.”
“I definitely will,” you say, taking a seat at the table and patting the chair next to you. “But I think it’s time for your interview.”
“Interview?” he asks.
You nod. “I’m not about to just let the first cat-loving man I come across be Tiger’s father. I need to see if you’re prepared for the role.”
So Soonyoung, giving you a cautious look, comes to sit beside you with Tiger trotting after him. “Okay, what do you want to know?”
“What’s your favorite color?” you ask him.
“That’s hardly a standard interview question,” he protests, laughing.
“This is hardly a standard interview,” you shoot back. “Now tell me.”
He thinks for a minute. “Black and white.”
“Hmm, interesting,” you muse, but before you can go any further, he raises a hand.
“How about you?” he asks.
“I’m asking the questions!” you say indignantly, and he chuckles.
“Okay, but shouldn’t I know my son’s mother?” He makes a face. “That sounded weird. You know what I meant.”
You stare at him, considering, for awhile before answering. “Orange,” you finally reply. Then, in a teasing tone, you add, “Like a tiger.”
“You’re joking,” Soonyoung insists, his eyebrows raised and his eyes wide.
“I’m actually not,” you admit. “And can I confess something else: tigers are easily in my top five favorite animals.”
“Well, anything lower than number one is just bad taste,” Soonyoung claims, grinning.
“Ah, well, I guess we can’t all have entirely correct opinions,” you sigh. “Except you, of course.”
“You’re such a fast learner,” Soonyoung praises.
And on the conversation goes. Usually, when talking to someone as pretty as Soonyoung is, you find yourself tongue-tied and awkward, but talking with Soonyoung is as easy as breathing. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that the man seems to have no idea how gorgeous he is -- he doesn’t take himself too seriously, and is incredibly silly in a way most men of his level of attractiveness aren’t willing to be. And he makes you feel smart and interesting, appearing just as fascinated by your answers as you are with his.
Over the course of your conversation, you learn that Soonyoung is close with his mother; he loves all animals; he befriends strangers on public transportation and is a caring and loyal friend to so many people he can hardly keep track of them all. He can’t drink very well, he gets sad late at night, and when you ask him what he’s most proud of, he tells you that he always knows who the killer is in a game of mafia.
Try as you might to discover any red flags that would disqualify Soonyoung as the perfect father for your cat, your interview proves quite the opposite. The less-than-rational wing of your mind-palace is already picking out your wedding colors for the inevitable moment you marry this man. The less feral part of your mind is, surprisingly, cautiously optimistic. For all your reservations about dating, Soonyoung has proven someone you very much enjoy getting to know.
After several hours, the two of you arrive at the first lull in the conversation, when your laughs fade out and you just look at each other, electricity charging the air. Soonyoung breaks the silence. “So, did I get the job?”
You pretend to deliberate for a single second. “Absolutely,” you say, holding out your hand for him to shake.
He throws his arms around you instead. “We’re actually married now, and married people hug,” he explains.
You giggle nervously, despite the growing heat in your face. “I don’t remember you proposing today,” you scold him lightly, still hugging.
“The one from last night is still valid,” he says, breaking apart. “Honey,” he adds as an afterthought.
Just then, your phone rings. You answer it quickly, rushing to your bedroom to take the call. After a few minutes, you return to the kitchen apologetically. “It’s work,” you tell Soonyoung. “A situation came up with a client.”
“Do you need to leave now?” Soonyoung asks, jumping up. “Can I give you a ride?”
You shake your head. “It’s actually an hour drive and I’m not supposed to bring people who aren’t privy to the case. But — well, Tiger usually gets fed around 8 pm, and I don’t think I’ll be back by then. Would you be okay to do that? If not it’s totally fine, I can call my sister-in-law to do it.”
Soonyoung beams. “Of course. Can I wait for you to get home?”
You blink. “Soonyoung, it’ll be at least four hours from now. Probably more. We’re talking past midnight.”
“No school tomorrow,” Soonyoung reminds you, shrugging. “Plus, a group of friends invited me out to drink tonight, and I didn’t really want to go. Now I’ve got an excuse.”
You breathe a sigh of relief. “You are genuinely the best,” you say, going to him and wrapping him up in your arms. “Thanks.”
He seems taken aback by your sudden hug, but responds all the same. “Be safe on your way to work,” he says softly in your ear, raising goosebumps on the back of your neck, and you steal one final look at him before leaving.
******
By the time you get home, it’s nearly one in the morning. As you slump tiredly against the steering wheel of your car before going in, you check your phone and find several missed calls from Ginger. It is only then you remember she was scheduled to come home today, and more than likely did — to Soonyoung.
You race up to your apartment and open the door. Sure enough, curled up on the couch with Tiger is Soonyoung. He’s fast asleep, his cheek squished against the firm cushion, Tiger keeping vigil at his stomach. Tiger meows reproachfully as you come in, taking quiet steps to Ginger’s room. She’s resting with her back against the headboard, but she opens her eyes at the sound of her door.
“So, I came home to a man in my house,” she says expectantly. “That was crazy.”
“Yeah. We had a runaway situation that I had to figure out, and Soonyoung stayed to feed Tiger and make sure I got home okay,” you explain softly, not wanting to wake Soonyoung.
“I’m so glad he’s not a serial killer,” Ginger whispers. “He was very attentive. Kept checking on me and asking if I needed anything.”
“He did?” you ask, your heart in your throat.
“He seems like a tender little guy,” Ginger says, watching you carefully.
“He does,” is your simple reply. You can’t trust yourself to speak without crying.
******
Soonyoung ended up accidentally sleeping over that night. In the morning, the three of you — Soonyoung, Ginger, and yourself — spent a fractionally awkward but mostly pleasant morning breakfasting together before Soonyoung insisted it was time for him to shower. After that day, he dropped by frequently.
Sometimes he would stay for just twenty minutes, dropping off a book or visiting Tiger. Occasionally he’d bring by an ingredient for a dinner you were making, and you made it a habit to invite him to join on those occasions. The easy conversation between the two of you became an easy friendship, bursting with silliness and laughter and acceptance of each other’s quirks. You felt more and more like your real self around him. Which was crazy, especially given how thoroughly and extremely smitten with him you are.
It had taken you less than a week to realize your feelings. You’d expected to start feeling uncomfortable around Soonyoung, but for some reason, he just made it so clear that he cared about you that you didn’t even worry about if he liked you or not.
You reflect on this as you drive to your friend’s house to get ready before the wedding. You’re nervous about how this whole day will go, but the promise of seeing Soonyoung later makes it all worth it. In fact, just the thought of him being with you seems to calm your nerves and make it easier to face the day.
You mostly keep to yourself with the bustle of getting ready. The soft pink dresses the bride picked as your bridesmaids’ dresses are not your normal style or color, but you like how the sleek satin fabric looks on you. It pairs well with your minimal hairstyle and makeup. Before you know it, it’s time for you to go get Soonyoung.
When he opens the door, his face breaks into a huge smile. “You look beautiful!” he exclaims, covering his mouth with both hands.
“You look so handsome!” you reply, looking him up and down. He looks amazing in his black suit, white shirt, and black tie.
“You’re not supposed to outshine the bride,” Soonyoung says sternly. “I don’t think they’ll let us in.”
“Stop it,” you say, flustered.
“I’m serious,” Soonyoung insists.
“Well, if they don’t let us in, I think I’d prefer that,” you say honestly.
“I’m actually excited,” Soonyoung admits. “I think it’ll be fun.”
“Even though my friends are...”
“Kind of awful? Yeah, I’m not worried about it.”
“Why?” you ask.
“Because I’m not planning on paying them any attention at all,” Soonyoung says simply, his eyes fixed on you. And as he helps you into the driver’s seat, you can’t help but smile.
The wedding is a lavish affair. After the complicated wedding ceremony, where you stood at the farthest distance from the bride and had a hard time tearing your eyes away from Soonyoung, who stared at you the whole time, he whisks you away to your dinner table.
“Did you enjoy the ceremony?” you ask as Soonyoung pulls out your chair for you to sit down.
“It was quite a view,” he teases lightly as he sits beside you.
You know what he really meant, and you give him a shy half-smile before replying, “It sure is beautiful out here!” You gesture around at the venue, which is gorgeous — a beautiful private property with loads of land, and a gazebo on the banks of a large pond, where the ceremony took place.
Soonyoung scoffs. “Well, yeah, but you seem determined to miss my point.” Nonchalantly, he slips a hand onto your knee, and you have to remind yourself to breathe. “I’m flirting with you.”
“Oh, are you?” you ask, feigning surprise. “I hadn’t noticed.” But in reality, it’s impossible to stop yourself from beaming.
“Well, we are married,” Soonyoung says, his hand sliding across your knee to find your hand. He tangles his fingers with yours. “I think it comes with the territory.”
“If you say that too loud, you’re going to make people think it’s true,” you joke.
“Let them think that,” he says, his eyes trained on you in a way that makes butterflies erupt in your stomach. You squeeze his hand and look away, slightly panicked.
Your eyes land below the table. “I like your shoes,” you blurt.
Soonyoung looks down at his plain black loafers. “These are like, my least interesting pair of shoes,” he points out with a sly grin.
“Well, you’re an interesting man,” you say, trying to recover but feeling flustered all the same. “What are your most interesting pair of shoes?”
“I’ll give you one guess.”
“The only thing I can count on is that they’re tiger-related,” you reply, grateful for this subject shift.
Soonyoung nods. “Calvin and Hobbes Air Force Ones,” he confirms proudly. “I should’ve worn them.”
“You would have made the bride angry.”
“That makes me want to wear them even more,” Soonyoung grumbles.
“What’s your beef with my friends?” you ask him lightly, absently trailing one of your hands over his arm.
He leans in to almost-whisper the answer. “They left you vulnerable when they should have been taking care of you, and that bothers me.”
You’re taken aback by how serious the usually silly Soonyoung sounds, but before you have a chance to respond, the music starts, heralding the arrival of the new Mr. And Mrs. You take the moment of cheering and applause to breathe deeply and steady your trembling hands. This is Soonyoung, you remind yourself. You don’t need to be nervous around him.
You’ve sufficiently pulled yourself together by the time you have Soonyoung’s attention again. “So, what will you do after the wedding is over?” you ask him, trying to keep the new, flirty side of him locked away.
“That’s an amazing question that I actually was going to ask you. Do you wanna watch a movie?” he asks.
“Well, my place is empty tonight, so that sounds kind of fun,” you admit, not sure you fully succeeded at not flirting.
“Perfect,” he says. “So, what are you in the mood for? Action? Horror? Romcom?”
“How about…a wholesome sports movie? Those are my favorite genre of movies.”
“Really?” he asks with interest. “This surprises me about you.”
The conversation settles into its normal easy rhythm — all through dinner, you talk and laugh and enjoy each other’s company. When the dancing starts, you allow Soonyoung to pull you into his arms on the dance floor, following his lead in a smooth trot-step. “You’re a good dancer,” you observe.
“I teach kid’s dance classes on the side,” he admits. “It’s my night job.”
“Ah, and here I was, thinking you probably did pole-dancing after hours,” you tease.
“I know you’re not serious, but I am actually extremely flattered you’d assume that,” Soonyoung says. “Pole dancers are strong.”
“So are you,” you point out.
“How do you know?” he asks.
You swallow hard. “Uh, you — your arms,” you stutter. “They're…really nice.”
Soonyoung (unconsciously?) flexes his bicep under your hand, and your knees nearly buckle. It’s almost pathetic how affected you are by him, especially given that he hasn’t even made a move yet, and you cringe inwardly at yourself.
“Are you okay? You look uncomfortable,” Soonyoung asks.
“Oh, uh, yeah. I’m fine?” you reassure, but in the least convincing voice ever.
“Do you need some water?” he asks, concerned.
“Yes, that’d be amazing,” you say, shooing him away and fanning at yourself, your mind full of useless chiding for being so embarrassingly whipped.
A tap on your shoulder startles you from your thoughts. “Hi,” says a familiar voice — and your stomach drops.
It’s your ex boyfriend, the one you’d asked your friend not to invite but to no avail. “Hi,” you say shortly.
“You look great,” he says, to no reply from you. “The color suits you.”
“Is there something you want?” you ask him, trying to make it clear you don’t want to talk with him about anything.
“Just trying to catch up on what’s happened since, well, you know—“
“Since I caught you cheating?” you finish. “Yeah, life’s been really great since then. Thanks for the trust issues.”
He gives a sheepish little grin. “Yeah, sorry about that,” he says, like he’s a call center employee placating an angry customer. “I got promoted at work.”
You could punch him. You would, if you weren’t at a wedding. Luckily all murderous intent is redirected by a very timely Soonyoung, who arrives on the scene with a confident, “hey, baby!” and a hand outstretched with a glass of water.
“Oh, you came with someone?” your ex says. He sizes up Soonyoung, who is easily bigger than him, and shrugs. “Bad luck. Maybe next time.”
“I was this close to ruining this wedding,” you confess as Soonyoung wraps a protective arm around your waist, watching your ex saunter away. “He started talking about his promotion.”
“Didn’t he cheat on you?” Soonyoung asks, watching him with narrowed eyes.
“Yeah,” you confirm, scowling.
“Well, drink your water, and then we can dance again. You’ll forget all about him.”
This turns out to be true. Dancing with Soonyoung is so much fun -- he seems unusually good at it, and leads you very well, but also doesn’t take things too seriously, letting you spin him or even pretending to do a dip in which he almost falls over. The whole thing is just so ridiculous that you find yourself giggling through it, needing to pause and take a break. Soonyoung suggests that the two of you take a walk down to the lake, and you readily agree.
He holds your hand during the walk, and you can feel yourself trying to explain away his behavior -- he’s probably just trying to scare off your ex, or any of the other bridesmaids who’ve been making eyes at him all evening (which you’ve been pretending not to notice or care, but which you most definitely have noticed and are not happy about). Or maybe he just wants some affection. Or maybe it’s something else. It certainly can’t be the simplest explanation -- that Soonyoung likes you in the same way you like him.
The banks of the water are muddy and slick, and you and Soonyoung have to cling to each other for balance, but you’re still giggling like children as you kick off your shoes and let your toes sink into the murky shallows of the pond. “It’s freezing,” you say, hopping out almost immediately and colliding with Soonyoung, who automatically throws his arms out to steady you. Your laughter fades as you look into his eyes, which are wide and uncharacteristically shy and nervous. He swallows. Hard.
“Uh....” he says, stammering. “You’re -- you’re beautiful.”
“Thank you,” you say in a tense whisper.
“I think I -- I think I like you,” Soonyoung whispers back.
“You think?” you ask, smiling a little.
“No, that was ridiculous,” he corrects. “Uh, I like you. For suresies. For realsies.”
“For suresies and for realsies?” you say with wide eyes, and he cringes.
“Throw me a bone, please,” he whines. “I’m nervous.”
And he is. You can tell that this normally confident boy is all but in pieces after making his confession. So you untangle yourself from Soonyoung’s grasp and turn to face him, wrapping your arms around his neck and looking at him. “So am I,” you admit.
And at this, Soonyoung beams. If you didn’t know better, you’d think that a smile that lights up a room was a bit of metaphorical nonsense that didn’t truly apply to anyone, but seeing this now, you figure that was an understatement in Soonyoung’s case. This kind of smile from him was enough to support intelligent light on several planets. And you? Just like a moon, you know you’ll be rotating around him your whole life, just reflecting that light. It is impossible to fully describe the way it warms you from the inside out.
You’re so distracted by Soonyoung himself that you don’t notice how he’s leaned in close until his lips brush yours. And, in fact, this move surprises you so much that you jump, startled, which sends you sliding into the mud, dirtying up your pale pink dress and causing an angry honk to emanate from the reeds where you land. Before you know it, a goose is hissing in your ear, and you shriek with terror as you scramble to your feet, running with all your might from the furious bird, who emerges from its marshy home to chase you up the hill toward the wedding party.
You never thought you’d need to answer the question, “Could I beat a goose in a fight?” And now, here you are, with a very clear answer indeed: absolutely not. The goose is fast, using a combination of an aggressive waddle, short bursts of low flight, and what is more than likely a higher-than-average dose of unfettered bloodlust to stay right on your heels all the way onto the dance floor, where wedding guests dive out of the way in cartoonish confusion. You don’t have time to think about how ridiculous you must look, covered in mud, running from a murderous goose, before Soonyoung firmly plants himself in front of the rampaging animal.
And inexplicably, it stops, looking up at Soonyoung with its unsettlingly blue eyes. He stands with his hands on his hips and glares down at the goose. “You interrupted what was supposed to be a very romantic moment for me,” he scolds. “Now shoo!”
And you watch, dumbfounded, as the goose gives a plaintive squawk before toddling back to its pond. “How did you do that?” you gasp.
It is only then that you realize the entire wedding is staring at you. And for good reason -- the bride and groom are about to cut the cake. The terror of being chased by Satan’s personal fowl pales in comparison to the sight of the bride. Her eyes are even more murderous than the bird’s had been -- and she’s holding a cake knife to boot.
So, before any other awful things can happen, you grab Soonyoung’s hand and run. Out of the wedding area, off the farm, onto the dirt road where you parked your car, realizing too late you left your shoes by the pond and not daring to face the wedding party or the goose to retrieve them. By the time you arrive at your car, you’re laughing so hard you’re crying. Soonyoung, though bewildered, joins in, and the two of you double over, struggling to breathe with the absurdity of it all.
When you’ve both been reduced to gasps for air, Soonyoung turns to you, leaning back against your passenger side door for support. “Is every day of your life like this?” he asks through deep breaths.
“Why?” you ask, your face falling. “Are you getting tired of rescuing me?”
He chuckles. Unexpectedly, he pulls you toward him by the waist, seemingly unbothered by the mud. “Not at all,” he says, pulling a stray clump of weeds from your hair. “I’d rescue you every day if you asked. I just need to know how much prep work I need to be doing. I mean, do I need to start a new workout routine? Do I need to learn karate geared toward beating up ducks?”
“That was a goose,” you correct. Then you register what he said. “You’d rescue me every day?”
He suddenly looks nervous again. “If you want,” he offers, pushing a lock of your hair behind your ear.
But your answering smile is enough to tell him that’s exactly what you want. With a mite more confidence, he grips your chin between his forefinger and thumb and pulls your lips to his.
This kiss is much more substantial than the last. Soonyoung’s arms wrap around you, his hands resting on the small of your back, locking you into his grasp and making it difficult for you to pull away -- as if you would, because his kisses are sweeter than summer strawberries. As the warm winds begin to pick up speed, as your hair whips around you and your muddy dress is blown every which way, your heart seems to crystalize into calmness. Kissing Soonyoung feels like putting the last piece into a puzzle, like coming inside from a cold rain to a warm fire, like watching bees flit from flower to flower in a late spring sunset. It feels perfect. It feels right.
You could go on kissing Soonyoung forever, until the two of you became statues locked in an embrace, but eventually you do pull away. Soonyoung laughs at the deep, shaky breath you take, and so do you, bringing a hand to touch his pink cheek in wonder. “You’re so beautiful,” you tell him.
“Not as much as you,” he replies warmly.
Then a thought strikes you. “Also, when were you going to tell me you have mind control over geese?”
He shrugs. “It wasn’t mind control. It was the eye of the tiger.” He brings his hand up in an imitation of a paw print, and you narrow your eyes at him.
“Okay. If you’re a Disney Princess, you can just say that.”
“Okay. I’m a Disney Princess,” Soonyoung agrees. “Does that make you happy?”
“Only if I get to be the Disney Prince,” you mumble, nestling into his arms and resting your head on his shoulder.
“Deal,” he replies. You can hear the smile in his voice as he does.

Divider by Rookthorne
Bucky woke up from sleeping on the floor like a vagrant with a start, frantically looking around the room. Taking a few deep breaths he went through the mantra his therapist told him to use when he was discombobulated.
I am James Bucky Barnes, I’m in my apartment, the year is 2024, and I have a white cat named Alpine
Repeating his little phrase under his breath, he found himself starting to calm down a little bit. Looking at the clock, he was a little disappointed to see that it was only midnight, meaning he only slept for three-ish hours. He sat on the floor for just a little while longer before pulling himself up, throwing on some clothes, grabbing his keys, and leaving his warm apartment out into the chilly New York night. He wandered down the street, feeling a little lonely. Steve was gone, Sam was visiting his family in Louisiana, and, well, he didn’t have anyone else. He kept walking until he found himself at the movie theater. Deciding he didn’t have anything better to do, he bought a ticket for the only show playing and found his seat.
Out of habit, he glanced around noticing a few people and the glowing exit sign but what caught his attention was a woman, sitting in the same row as him. The light of the silver screen lit up her features causing his heart to flutter in his chest, something he hadn’t felt in a long time. Knowing she was there, he found it hard to focus on the movie, sneaking glances at her every few seconds until he was eventually caught. Their eyes locked and Bucky blushed as his eyes widened. He was worried she was gonna call him a creep, or leave but instead she just smiled at him and offered a small wave. Getting over his initial shock, Bucky returned the wave and watched as the woman returned to the film.
Bucky stayed in his seat as the credits began to roll, glancing over to see the woman grabbing her coat and bag indicating that she was getting ready to leave, much to Bucky’s dismay. He sat there bitterly, wishing that he had the courage to go and ask her name, but that Bucky was long gone. He was so stuck in his head that he didn’t notice her walk by his seat. He did, however, notice the brush of her fingers against his gloved hands. He snapped his head up to look at her but she was already exiting the theater so he looked down at his hands and a little gasp left his mouth at what he saw, a little paper crane sat perfectly in his hands with a phone number and two words BE BRAVE.
With a gentleness he didn’t know he possessed, he placed the paper bird in his pocket, walked out of the theater, and began his trek home. His thumb and finger brushed over the paper in his pocket as he thought about the girl. Do I text her? Do I call her? How do people do this nowadays? Maybe I should text Sam? No, He’d just laugh at me. By the time he reached his apartment, he decided that he would text her. He entered the apartment and pulled out his phone along with the little bird. After he pulled up the messaging app, he punched in the number and sent a simple message that honestly took him too long to come up with.
B: Hi, I got your note. Would you maybe want to get some coffee? I know a little place near the theater we could go to. My name is Bucky by the way.
He pressed send and when the little delivered message popped up he immediately descended into a panic. He put his phone on the kitchen counter and began frantically pacing around. Alpine, hearing the rapid footsteps, appeared in the kitchen and observed Bucky for a moment. Eventually, she hopped down from the counter and stood in the middle of his walking path, letting out a little meow to further capture his attention. Bucky paused and with a sigh, scooped up Alpine into his arms.
“Alpine, what am I doin’?” I know I didn’t do this right.”
He huffed, running his fingers through her snowy white fur. Alpine just blinked and tilted her head, as if she was asking him to continue. Bucky sank to the floor, pressing his back up against the cabinets, continuing to absent mindedly rub Alpines chin.
“She probably thinks I’m a creep, o-or she knows who I am and just wanted to tell me what a monster I am. Maybe it’s not too late to delete that message..”
Placing Alpine on the ground, Bucky stood to retrieve his phone and his heart stopped when he saw there was a message.
Y: Hi Bucky! My name is Y/n! I would love to get a coffee! Would tomorrow at 9 be ok? What’s the name of the shop?
Bucky started at the phone unblinking. He looked to Alpine, back to his phone, then Alpine again. He remembered the words on the little paper bird before taking a breath and responding.
B: Yeah, 9 is great! The shop is called Joe’s.
Bucky watched as the sent message changed to read and then the three little dots dancing in the bottom left corner before her response appeared on his screen.
Y: Awesome! I will See you at 9 at Joe’s!
Bucky placed his phone down on the counter and looked down at Alpine who was watching him Curiously.
“I have a date tomorrow Apl.”

The Harrington Pattern Part 7
Hello! It's Tuesday and that means more Steve and Eddie. And it's looking like the story will end in chapter 12. It might take one more than that, but it's definitely almost done.
So what will that mean? Well, I'll start working on working on another story to bring it back up to two, but will still only work on the others on WIP Wednesday because I'm trying to get down the amount of WIPs I have running. I have far too many.
Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 Part 4 Part 5 Part 6
Day two of the Fair. Will sees Steve and Steve reveals a little trick. And Steve has to be stern mom again.
@mira-jadeamethyst @rozzieroos @redfreckledwolf @emly03 @itsall-taken
****
Steve picked up his usual set and went to the Renaissance Fair. This time they were the first to arrive and they stood there waiting for the rest of them to show up.
He had left the spirit gum with Mrs Sinclair and she was able to do an even better job then he had yesterday putting the ears back on.
The bow and quiver had been left behind today because sadly the poor bow had been a mangled, tangled mess by the time they left the fair yesterday.
Max and Robin’s cutlasses had fared better because they never left their sides, but even slung over Lucas’s shoulder, the poor aluminum just couldn’t bare the brunt of the crowds. And today was going to be even busier.
Steve looked at his watch and then back at the growing crowd waiting in line.
He tapped his foot nervously when he saw the familiar van pull into the lot. And the merry band of fellows hopped out, wearing the outfits they had yesterday. The ones that made Steve green with envy on how well they were put together.
It was like they had just walked off the set of a Hollywood movie.
He was good with a needle and thread, but whoever made their costumes should be making money off it, they were that talented.
Jeff came around to the other side of the van where Steve could see him and his ears looked great too.
“Looking good, Lawrence,” Steve whistled. “The ears are vastly improved.”
Jeff bowed dramatically. “Why thank you, my liege! I had my sister help me pick out the right color and type I needed and then I did it myself.”
Gareth snorted. “After practicing all night.”
Brian elbowed their youngest member. “It’s just like trying to get a beat right, you have to practice. Don’t give him shit for that.”
Gareth grumbled, but muttered a half-hearted apology to Jeff. The older teen just grinned at his friend.
Which after how crazy yesterday was, Steve wasn’t looking forward to a repeat if Jeff took offense to Gareth’s comment.
Eddie had been unusually quiet during this conversation, so while they milled around waiting for the remaining third of their group, Steve came up to him.
“Hey, you okay?” he asked, leaning down and forward to get a better look at the metalhead.
Eddie pursed his lips, but he nodded.
“You know, I have been dying to ask...”
Eddie smiled softly. “Who’s my tailor?”
Steve cackled. “Yeah, that. God, I would gleefully sacrifice one of the teenagers for the material alone, let alone the thread.”
“Which one?” Eddie asked, coming a little bit more out of his shell.
Steve reared back his head. “What?”
“Which one of the teenagers you would sacrifice?” Eddie asked again.
“Dustin,” Steve said without hesitation. “I figure virgin,” he counted on his fingers, “check, most annoying, check, and the one who would be the biggest... ‘value’ as it were, double check.”
Eddie laughed outright. “You don’t have to sacrifice any of them. Brian’s sister works at a big theater, the kind that do plays, as their costumer.”
Steve sighed and rubbed a bit of the black velvet between his thumb and forefinger. “You guys are so lucky.”
Eddie laughed again. “Trust me, even Bri had to pay for the privilege.”
Steve’s eyes lit up. “Oh?”
“Yup!” Eddie said, rocking back on his heels. “We had to pay for all the material and patterns ourselves, plus at least twenty-five percent of labor. These duds may be pretty, but lo they be also pricey.”
“Well, it was certainly worth it,” Steve murmured. “You guys look fantastic.”
Eddie’s cheeks colored a pretty pink. “Thanks. Um...mine is actually based on a character from a short story. Brian’s mom is Polish, but she loves sc-fi and fantasy so she gets this magazine, right?” Steve nodded. “So, anyway she’ll translate into English for Brian to read. It’s about this male witch and he has this minstrel friend named Jeskier...” he pronounced it strange, like yes-keer. “I’m probably pronouncing it wrong. But he’s so cool.”
“So you’re this minstrel guy?” Steve asked, suddenly understanding.
Eddie hummed excitedly. “Brian even went as one of the male witches. Not the main one though. But it’s still fun, you know?”
Steve smiled back. “Yeah. I never would have thought about going as a specific character before. Maybe we can plan something for next year.”
Whatever cloud leftover that was lingering over Eddie vanished in the light of Steve’s bright smile.
Eddie bumped his shoulder into Steve’s. “What’s on the docket today, pretty boy?”
Steve blushed bright red, but before he could answer, Claudia’s station wagon pulled up next to them. The four kids piled out, happily chatting and laughing. Well all but Mike.
Mike had always been a reserved kid, but as he got older, the more withdrawn he seemed to get. Will seemed to do the opposite. The kid was really coming out of his shell and into himself. And maybe that was the reason for Mike’s shrinking back.
Steve just shook his head and turned to Will. “Still no Jonathan?” he teased.
Will rolled his eyes. “He said and I quote ‘I’ll see about maybe Saturday’.”
Steve winced. He couldn’t make Jonathan come, but he could see how much Jonathan coming would mean so much to Will and it made his heart hurt just a little.
“Can’t force someone to have fun,” he said with a shrug. “It really is his loss.”
Will nodded sagely, like the mature person he was forced to become far too soon. “But! He did give me the ten dollars I needed for the staff to make up for it.”
Steve smiled. All right, maybe Steve didn’t have to stop by and give the elder Byers boy a piece of his mind.
He turned to Eddie. “Hey, you want to traverse the fields of commerce with me and Will to go get his staff?”
Eddie grinned. “Hell yeah! I didn’t get to go yesterday.”
Will grinned back. He turned to El and Mike. “You going to come with me. right?”
Mike shook his head. “El wanted to see the weavers this morning, but no one else wanted to go with her and with Steve’s dumb rule...”
“It’s not dumb,” Steve said. “Just because the Upside Down is gone, doesn’t mean there aren’t things that can hurt you.”
“We’re fifteen,” Mike protested. “I think that’s old enough to go by ourselves.”
Steve looked around at the other kids and they were all looking everywhere but at him. “May I remind you that we are literally standing on the ground where human monsters were trying to open a gate? Bad guys come in all shapes and sizes and even if you think you’re safe, is El? Or Will?”
The kids looked down at their feet and mumbled their apologies.
“I just want everyone safe and having a good time,” Steve finished. “You guys can do whatever you want, but do you know who your parents would blame if something happened to you?”
Dustin raised his head sharply. “But there are other adults here, why would they blame you?”
Steve barked out a bitter laugh. “Because I’m the fucking babysitter.” He walked off to get in line and everyone just followed behind quietly, suddenly somber.
Robin fell in step next to Steve and wrapped her arm around his shoulder. “Hey, dingus.”
Steve just ducked his head.
“It’s just a tricky age. You remember what it was like at their age,” she murmured.
“I was getting drunk every weekend, smoking, and having sex,” Steve grumbled. “I don’t want that for them.”
Robin kissed his cheek. “You’re sweet. But they’re going to have to figure it out on their own.”
Steve’s shoulders rounded. “I just want to them to have fun and we keep having knock out drag out fights before we go in and I–” he left out a deep sigh.
“You can’t be held responsible for what they do,” she said.
He snorted. “Tell that to Joyce or Claudia. Just because I’m the oldest.”
She hugged him tightly. “You’re not anymore and you know Eddie would do anything for those kids, too. Plus, this is exactly why you told them to find any adult. Let all of us help shoulder the load, too.”
Steve let out a low shuddering breath. “I’ll try. I just keep butting heads with Mike. Always Mike. And I don’t know what to do, he’s just so prickly and even outright hostile.”
“So don’t do anything,” Robin suggested.
He frowned. “What do you mean?”
“Let Eddie handle it,” she said. “He did a fine job yesterday. So let him do it again.”
Steve pressed his lips together and then nodded. “Okay.”
She kissed his cheek again and went back to talk to Eddie. Steve paid again for the tickets. Well, not all of them. Thankfully Eddie and his friends were paying their own way.
He turned to Will. “You ready to go get your staff?” He smiled broadly to hide the hurt of Mike’s rebellion.
Will smiled back. “Hell yeah!”
Eddie came bounding up to them. “I’ll meet you at the shop, there’s something I need to do really quick about tomorrow. They’ve messed up the schedule and me and Jeff have to go see someone about it.”
Steve nodded. “Yeah, just ask Jeff where the shop is, he should remember which one.”
Eddie smiled again. “You betcha, big boy.” He flounced back to Jeff and Steve watched him walk away.
When he turned back to Will, the young man was looking at him with curiosity.
“What’s up?”
Will furrowed his brows. “I’m trying to decide if you know about...” he pursed his lips trying to find a way to say what he meant without outing Steve in public. “What you feel about a certain someone?”
Steve looked back at where Eddie had melted into the crowd and then back at this all too perceptive boy. He put his arm around Will and started them walking toward the shop.
“If you’re asking what I think you’re asking,” Steve started slowly, “I’ve known I like both for awhile now. It was just easier to focus on the one. The one that was socially acceptable, you know?”
Will nodded. “I can see that. And then he came barreling into our lives and a good kind of upside down happened?”
Steve smiled fondly. “Yeah. He is so sweet. He’s everything I thought I wanted in Nancy.”
Will grinned. “You do have a type.”
He scuffed Will’s hair a bit. “Yeah, yeah.”
They walked in silence for awhile before Steve spoke up again.
“I feel I should give you a heads up before we get to the shop,” he said with a wince.
Will looked over at him in confusion.
“I may have talked the merchant in to holding it for you by giving them a ten dollar deposit to hold it.”
Will’s jaw dropped. “You can do that?”
Steve laughed. “No, not really. By I can be persuasive and he was willing to do me the favor.”
“Thanks, Steve,” Will murmured. “You’ve done so much for us, I think we take you for granted sometimes.”
Steve half shrugged. “My parents suck and while some of you have actually decent parents and older siblings, I don’t mind being the babysitter the one you guys look up to and come to for advice.”
Will smiled. “Any tips on how to tell your best friend you have a crush on them?”
Steve threw back his head and laughed. “Look, the one time I did that I was drugged up on truth serum and literally couldn’t lie. I don’t think that’s going to help you.”
“Too bad Robin bats for the other team,” he said with a smile.
Steve smiled back. “Nah, I think her telling me that is what made it easier for me to realize that having those feelings can’t make you a bad person. Not when she was so amazing.”
Will cocked his head to the side. “That’s fair.”
“Come on you,” Steve said, “let’s go get you this wizard staff.”
Will stopped in his tracks. “You said it right. You never say the DnD terms right.”
Steve raised a finger up to his lips and winked. “I do it because it drives Dustin up the wall and Eddie just loves explaining it to me, so I kill two birds with one stone.”
Will laughed. “Yeah, okay.”
As they wove their way through the crowd, Will smiled to himself. Steve and Eddie both liked boys, knew they liked boys, and were still unapologetically themselves. And maybe he could be too.
But first, he was going to get that wicked staff he saw yesterday because he had two brothers looking out for him. His biological one and Steve. Someone who cared so deeply that even when he should have walked away, he stayed.
And Will always could use more people that just...stayed.

For those that don't know "The Witcher" was an original short story in a Polish sci-fi/magazine in 1985. I couldn't figure out if Jeskier was in the original tale, so shush if he isn't.

![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/4349b13ae6383731f5299dfafaa63ec1/6dda575bc0010e66-21/s540x810/60c0f2600f5aef9ee1c11898ca1b0422c180dc34.jpg)

*Putting on my sweater I took in my look in the mirror* I was wearing a black sweater with a black jean skirt and black tights with platform boots I also had some of my hair pinned back and I spray my perfume on me before grabbing my purse and walk downstairs and saw my brother on the couch talking about books with Rory on the phone*
"woah woah woah where are you going?"Jess asked "I am going to see a movie"I said "with who?"Jess asked with a protective attitude "Lindsey and marlin"I said "Just don't be out late"Jess said "I won't"I said *rolling my eyes I walked to the front door and open it before walking out to the porch and shut it behind me*
-------
*Arriving to the theaters I smiled as I saw dean, pal and Jacob standing there just talk among themselves and I walked up to them* "Hi guys"I said softly "Oh hey y/n"Pal and Jacob greeted me *I smiled as them and dean smile* "Hi y/n"He said softly Dean looked amazing tonight he was wearing a black t-shirt and a leather jacket and jeans and boots his hair was normal he just looked handsome
"Should we get the tickets?"Dean asked "come on we are waiting for our girls Lindsey and Marlin"Pal said "Alright let's wait"Dean said Lindsey and Marlin was the other guys girlfriends they we're sweet and nice towards me and treated me as if I was one of they're friends
*After the girls showed up dean and I payed for the tickets before we all entered the theater with everyone I sat down next to dean and he leaned in and whispered* "So who do you is going to leave first?"Dean asked *I laughed a tiny bit and whispered back* "Pal and Marlin for sure"I said *Dean chuckled and nodded* "Smart move"Dean said with a grin god he was perfect
------
*After the movies I waved to dean* "I am going to skip the diner tonight I need to get home before Jess throws a fit"I said "Alright uh call me when you get home so I can make sure you got home safely"Dean said "will do"I said with a smile
*getting home I told Jess goodnight and went up to my room and changed into my pajamas and dialed Dean's number and shut my door as I layed down on my bed waiting for him to answer*
"Hello"Dean said softly "Hey dean just wanted to let you know I made it home safely"I said "Good uh I had fun tonight"Dean said *I smiled* "Happy to hear that I did too"I said "well I guess I see you tomorrow in third period"Dean said "Sure will same spot every day"I said "great uh goodnight y/n"Dean said "Goodnight dean"I said
--------
*The next morning I picked out my outfit for the day and went to the bathroom to take a shower before getting out and grabbed my clothing and put them on and looked into the mirror and nodded* I was wearing a black band t-shirt with a black and white flannel and black jeans with combat boots *I quickly braided my hair before doing some makeup and I grabbed my bag before leaving the house*
*Getting to third period I sat in the back like normal and took out my books and I saw dean walk in as he sit down* "well good morning"Dean said "Good morning"I said "That movie was crazy last night right?"Dean asked "I was but they made the gore so good"I said "right"Dean said me and dean we're always into horror movies we been talking about all the good ones since we first met we got along so well and clicked in all the right ways
------
*Getting home I signal for Rory to talk to me and she followed me upstairs to my room as I shut my door and I watched as she sit on my bed and I stood by my dresser* "Okay so tell me everything"Rory said "I like him a lot I just don't know how to ask him out"I said "You could ask him on a date"Rory said "I don't have the confidence enough to do that"I said "Come on you got this"Rory said "Okay but how should I ask him?"I asked "well I read a lot of romance books where the guys ask the girls out on a note or something you can ask him that way"Rory said "wouldn't that be cheesy?"I asked "Cheesy but cute"Rory said "fine I will do it tomorrow in third period"I said "great but remember you can't let your brother find out"Rory said *I sighed* "yeah I know I just wish he wasn't a you know hot head sometimes"I said "I know but hey you got this"Rory said
------
*The next day I made my way into third period and sit down as did dean and he sat down next to me and I took out my things and me and dean chatted for the first few moments of class before the lesson begin I then tear off a piece of paper* If this whole thing doesn't worry I am going to curse Rory in my head for putting the idea in my head
*writing on the note I looked towards the teacher before throwing the note onto dean's desk as I felt my cheeks heat up*
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/db47d43ff3132d4c59d5b8da7e87efe0/6dda575bc0010e66-c5/s400x600/c27c7182aaee79336de83b23f6c572de05613c12.jpg)
*I looked over at dean as he read the note and he widen his eyes before grinning and took his pin and check one of the boxes before folding it and handing it back to me and I took it and open it*
'Yes' was checked on it *I smiled as I looked over at dean as he winked and then went back to paying attention to the teacher* Holy shit this was really happening I am going on a date with my crush
*After class dean pulled me towards him* "So when do you want to have this date?"Dean asked "I was thinking Friday night?"I asked "works for me"Dean said *I smiled* "Great then Friday night it is"I said
------
*It was finally Friday night I slipped on a white short dress and kept my hair down and straighten it before applying on my makeup and I put on the tenshoes* "you look amazing"Rory said as she held me get ready this wasn't exactly my style but I wanted to look perfect for tonight "Do you think he is going to like it?"I asked "He's going to love it"Rory said "Oh uh It's almost time so I am going to go meet him down the road"I said "Okay I keep Jess distracted go have fun and tell me everything when you get home"Rory said "for sure"I said
*Leaving the house I walked down the block before getting into dean's car* "Hey you"Dean said with a smile "Hi"I said "You look amazing tonight"Dean said "I can say the same about you"I said
*Dean pulled up into the parking lot of the art museum and he got out before going over to my side and open the door for me* "why thank you kind sir"I said playfully "No problem m'lady"Dean said with a joking tone *I laugh as I got out of the car and we walked up to the door and dean open it* "Lady's first"Dean said *I smiled* "what a gentlemen"I said *I walked in and dean followed behind me*
*I looked around and I smiled* "They're art is so perfect"I said "I know right you can tell alot about people with they're art"Dean said "well then tell me about this one"I said "this artist had a heart break that was huge and painted they're feelings on the canvas"Dean said *nodding impressed I smiled* "What about this one?"I asked *Dean laugh and he lead in* "well this artiest painted they're lust as you can see with the two shirtless men on the side and the women in the middle of the bed"Dean said *I widen my eyes and held back my laugh and then one caught my eye the most and I walked to it*
"This one"I said *dean smiled* "That one is when a girl has a crush on a guy but is to scared of rejection"Dean said *I looked up at dean as he looked down at me* "I guess you feel drawn to it?"Dean asked "A little bit'I said "But you weren't rejected"Dean said confused *I laugh softly* "It's not about rejection or dating it's just that every women go threw this alest once in they're lives"I said "well that does explain that"Dean said *I smiled* "We should head over to the restaurant"Dean said "For sure"I said with a smile
----
*After eating me and dean walked to the middle of town and he held me in his arms as we watched the stars laying on the grass* "You know everything about tonight feels like a dream"I said "It does and I love it I want to take you on more dates in the future if that's alright pretty girl"Dean said "I am totally fine with it"I said with a blush
----
that was just one of many dates I was falling head over heels I love with Dean anyone could read that from my face but I still took caution when it was around my brother
*Leaving third period dean took my hand and dragged me to a empty classroom* "hey"he said "Hi"I said *with that he lead down and kissed me* It felt like we we're together but we never really asked for labels
----
*Later that night dean sneaked threw my bedroom window I smiled and laugh and quickly locked the door and walked over to dean* "what are you doing here?"I asked "Just wanted to see you what else?"Dean asked *I smiled as he leaned over and kissed me as I kissed him back and he slowly pulled away and walked over to my chair and sit down* "I've been thinking alot and I was wondering if you wanted to make things official"Dean said *I smiled* "I would love too"I said *Dean smiled and got up before making his way to me and kissed me* "great then you are mine my girlfriend"Dean said "Your girlfriend"I said *Dean smiled before leaning down and kissed me once again*
that's all I am thinking about making a part two for this if you want to see that just let me know and I will gladly make it :)

tuesday again 01/28/2025
is this little bulleted preview helpful or does it make people less likely to click the readmore? a question i could answer if i went back to college for marketing. not a question but a comment, this one has the biggest range of dates in published works out of all the tuesdayposts
listening: Make a Man Out of You (2023, Vienna Vienna)
reading: Third Man Out (1992, Richard Lipez writing as Richard Stevenson)
watching: Automatic Moving Company (1912, dir. Bosetti)
playing: Behind the Frame: The Finest Scenery (2021, mobile/PC/Switch/Playstation, Silver Lining Studio)
making: cross stitch
listening
i was served an ad for a forthcoming single by the artist Vienna Vienna on instagram and promptly listened to all his shit. yet another banger for the SOMEBODY COME FUCK THIS (GAY) playlist.
ex-religious alt-rock, self-described "glimmer rock". he's signed to pete wentz of fall out boy's label, pete wentz is a surprisingly good interviewer? very minimal input from the actual interviewer lol
Boxes be damned, Vienna Vienna revels in his own iteration of alt-rock — a genre he’s deemed “glimmer rock.” The result is a cathartic exercise in self-actualization as much as it is about a literal “glimmer” of light. Vienna Vienna’s sound is melody-forward, built on a foundation of shimmering reverb, electric guitar riffs full of personality, and juicy hooks lathered in witty playfulness, and ultimately, empowerment. ... VIENNA VIENNA: At its core, glimmer rock is about shared catharsis and a loud fucking show, like a really loud show where you can really express yourself and let out whatever's been holding you back — while leaning into the theater of it all, being dramatic because it's fun and campy. It's a good time, and it's a healing thing to express emotions completely. And it’s a great opportunity, onstage, to present it as glimmer rock and share this idea that you're catching hold of a glimmer, this special light at the end of a tunnel. You can see yourself, you can feel yourself — while doing it very loudly.

reading
the actual physical experience of reading this book was very pleasant: curled up on the couch under the strawberry blanket while it was raining, listening to ethopian jazz. it was so nice to actually read an enjoyable book. i feel like i've been in a little bit of a rut.
NOT an erotica novel this time, just a fun little noir murder mystery with an outsider private detective!
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/e5225f1b7d6fadcf11982a576fa54094/2ab2f9b5dc7e9c15-76/s500x750/d120b8e6cc99a26d6642290f867f5b517decffae.jpg)
Which powerful mystery man killed the gay activist for outing him? After an attempt is made on his life, Queer Nation activist John Rutka asks tough-as-nails gay private detective Don Strachey to provide him with protection. Why does someone want to kill him? The activist's efforts at outing closeted gay homophobes have earned him a multitude of enraged enemies who would just as soon see him dead. After Strachey refuses to help, the man's body is found savagely murdered in apparent retribution for his deeds. Now, because of this, the reluctant Strachey feels obligated to investigate. Third Man Out brings back one of the most popular gay heroes in mystery fiction, Don Strachey, a private investigator as hard-boiled as they come, along with his lover, Tim Callahan, in a topical and very entertaining mystery dealing with the ethical issues of outing.
Third Man Out by Richard Lipez writing as Richard Stevenson was originally published in 1992, and my 2007 reprint is a movie tie-in. 173p, a softcover of middling quality. the cover is much glossier than most of the gay and lesbian novels on my shelf. must be that hollywood money kicking around.
both a fun frontispiece and a very helpful author's note. haworth press started early with publishing LGBTQ+ academic studies, and they had both gay men's and lesbian fiction imprints. available on the internet archive, i'm fairly certain i bought this one up in ct before i moved.

no on-page or fade to black sex scenes: this is just a briskly plotted murder mystery, fourth in a sixteen-book and four-movie series. i will be searching out more of these books, most of which seem to be on the internet archive thank god.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/d3f9b73945509024a1b083e69e49f7f0/2ab2f9b5dc7e9c15-18/s540x810/87540111fe5fd8b05a1a4634952fd3581ccfeebf.jpg)
i would call it a capable modern noir: deeply concerned with ways and means, hypocrisy, bribes, government corruption, and a bumbling homme fatale. the final scene is at an airport for christ's sake. this is also a rare LGBTQ+ book where it could never be a straight book: it is too entwined in ethical issues specific to the community. i feel like a lot of the more modern LGBTQ+ debut novels ive bounced off are those where the characters feel coincidentally gay, or genderswapped from a straight romance. not so here! i need to read more books by cranky old gay men who have already written a zillion books!
I lived behind masks for much of my early life, and what this does to people’s psyches interests and frightens me. I think one reason I loved John LeCarre’s early spy novels was that his protagonists led double lives out of patriotism and not for reasons of shame or social embarrassment. Of course, it was more complicated than that for LeCarre’s characters, just as it’s not all bad for closeted gay people. Leading secret lives sometimes has a kind of romance to it too. But overall the closet is self-destructive.
this book is snappy: it manages to jam a lot of stuff in 178 pages. the dialogue between don and his partner timmy is particularly good: they feel like a real couple who loves each other to death but also gets frustrated, have inside jokes, have a routine and are there for each other.
very dryly funny in general and about the general albany NY region. i have spent so many thanksgivings out that way bc my favorite roommate's parents live there and i have heard so many of the exact same complaints from her and her parents lmao

watching
using up some kanopy credits on a series of early short film and early remakes of early short film. Automatic Moving Company (1912, dir. Bosetti) is the remake i prefer bc i think the stop-motion is better-- there's a bounciness and verve to it. crazy how the only real "tell" of scale is the straw

THE most chobani hopepunk commerical game i have ever played, Behind the Frame: The Finest Scenery (2021, Silver Lining Studio out of Taiwan, originally a mobile game) is free until thurs morning CST on epic.

Guide brush strokes and solve a variety of puzzles to help an aspiring artist complete her masterpiece amid her brusque neighbor’s gaze and his pesky cat. As her painting starts to take shape, uncover an emotional tale of chance and artistry revealed behind unrelated yet familiar moments.
i didn't like this hand-animated two-hour point and click adventure game very much. it's cute and it's pretty but the storytelling is very muddy. i don't think their outsourced translation service (probably through Akapura, their publisher) did them any favors. all of the dialogue and flavor text is like that, so it's good they leaned into a lot of dialogue-less cutscenes.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/d2ad8c482339dacdba33d1e817ca8b02/2ab2f9b5dc7e9c15-09/s540x810/2bbd9d43e9154b1656ab2f75402de10ff0952c85.jpg)
this interview with one of the artists reveals they had a eight-person team, which seems kind of large for something that started out as a mobile game? it also has some helpful info about what they were going for.
What led you to become a Game Developer / Marketer? This decision came down on a simple question, which also motivated us to develop games in the first place. What would I rather do in a 90 minutes break? After collecting all the opinions on this topic from members at that time, we decided to combine three shared activities that we like to do during the break: see a movie, read a novel, and play a game. We want to make games that would let players have it all. ... Stories are the heart of our games. Behind the Frame is a narrative-driven game with escape room coating. Aside from the main storyline, which we hope would touch the players, we also have some breakthroughs on the display of the game scene. We adopted 2D 360°panorama for the presentation of several main scenes.
i do think the uniqueness of the 2D 360 panorama and pulling that tech from virtual museum and house tours does serve them well. they really only had to build out two areas, and the rest is traditional flat visual-novel scenes. however, this mechanic also really hurt their storytelling, bc such care is taken with the little clickable info boxes about many of the things in the apartment that it's really jarring when it jumps to a weird magical time nonsense thing? there is such a persistence of your actions on the world and the ability for outside factors to change your apartment (cat walking through paint, etc), and everything is very modern including the clothes, so it's never clear what's a flashback and what isn't. when you get to the end, the original framing device of amnesia just makes it seem like the protagonist is suffering from alzheimer's. i think something so focused on memory chose a very strange framing device, but unfortunately the framing device is The Whole Game.
i think they accomplished their goal (escape room with fun but not challenging puzzles you can finish in two lunch breaks). i love a short, self-contained story, but i think $15-$30 full-price is kind of steep for something with very little replay value. ported to steam and playstation, which is pretty good for a mobile game. can't be mad at a small team making at least their money back, the hand animated cutscenes were very pretty, i just wish the actual narrative was clearer

the first and last time this little wall hanging project will appear, bc instead of farm animals i am going to put some very doxxable items for a friend's birthday. got this cross stitch book as part of an 8/$1 sale bc i liked some of the alphabets and did not really expect to stitch anything else out of it but hey! sometimes you need some frames that look like they came ripped out of a 90s wendys fast food restaurant interior

The Scream
(Bruce Wayne X reader)
Warnings: None, Fluff
Notes: @the--blackdahlia came up with this amzaing idea!! I used it and ran lol They have written other wonderful Keaton!Bruce Wayne fluff for me here and here (and I forgot one!) here Thank you Moxie!! 😘
🦇🖤🦇🖤🦇🖤🦇🖤🦇🖤🦇🖤🦇🖤🦇🖤🦇🖤🦇
Bruce’s car rolled to a stop in front of the manor gates. He leaned his head back on the head rest and loosened his tie as he waited for them to swing open. He was exhausted. A new group of Chinese investors were giving him hell. This was the third meeting with them this week that had dragged on into the night.
As he started down the driveway, practically in autopilot, he glanced at his watch. 930. Shit! Normally he'd be getting ready for patrol by now. He didn’t even bother to put the car in the garage in the back, opting instead to park it out front. He'd put it away in the morning.
Hurrying up the steps, he pushed the giant front door open. Wanting to practically drop on the floor, he set his briefcase down on the entry table and rubbed his temple.
His mind was almost cleared of the day when his self induced trance was interrupted by a high pitched scream. Y/N, he thought. His head snapped up and he looked around, trying to figure out which direction you were.
Again he heard you, this time yelling, “Nooo!”
Bruce took off as fast as he could manage, sliding a bit on the slick floor as he rounded a corner. He stood still in one of the multiple halls of the massive house, holding his breath so he could listen better. He could hear loud music but there it was again. Your scream was ear piercing even from the hall, but he could tell which door now you were behind.
Busting the door open, a blinding light radiated at him across a giant screen and music blasted. Bruce had run into the theater room without paying attention. Outlines of two figures could be seen sitting in the middle of the room, facing the movie they now were obviously watching. Bruce doubled over, putting his hands on his knees and tried to slow his heartbeat.
Standing back up after a few moments, Bruce was given cover to walk down the side of the sloping room unnoticed when the scene of the movie grew dark in color. He leaned back against the wall, looking at you two. Your eyes were glued to the screen, popcorn bowl in your cross-legged lap and a piece frozen in place between two of your fingers in front of your face. You were too entranced with the scene to eat it or put it back. Alfred was right next to you with a hand over his face. His fingers were just cracked enough that Bruce could see the reflection of his glasses and knew he was watching still. Shaking his head silently at the sight, he crossed his arms.
Catching movement out of the corner of your eye, you turned and saw a dark figure. At the same time, a ghoulish monster popped onto the screen again. This time the bowl went flying and popcorn rained down on you and Alfred as you scrunched up into the tightest ball possible, screaming the loudest you had ever screamed in your life. Bruce lunged forward just in time to catch the bowl before it beamed you in the head.
This time it was Bruce who was shouting.
“IT'S ME, Y/N!”
The movie was still blaring as you started to unravel and look up at Bruce's face between your arms that were currently covering your face and head. You took a breath and started searching the ground for the remote that had gone flying in the commotion. Finally spotting it you pushed pause, causing the room to suddenly go quiet.
Bruce ran his hands through his hair and held the back of his head while biting his lip, looking between a popcorn covered and scared, you and Alfred.
“I think that was quite enough excitement for one evening for this old man.” Alfred let go of clutching his chest and stood. “Master Wayne, I have leftovers for you in the fridge. Would you like me to reheat them for you, Sir?”
Bruce put his arms down and onto his hips as he blew out a puff of air.
“No no, Alfred. I’m probably going to wait until after I get back from patrol. Thank you though.”
“Very good, Sir. Goodnight to you both.”
“Night Alfred” Bruce casually said.
“Goodnight, Alfie” you said through a grin that was starting to spread across your face.
Bruce watched Alfred walk up and out of the room then turned his attention back to you. He raised one of his eyebrows as he crossed his arms again. You pinched your lips together and made your eyes big and innocent. He just raised his eyebrow even higher, which broke you. Your fit of giggles caused you to slump to the side of your chair. Bruce smiled while shaking his head and sat down next to you where Alfred had been and waited for you to breathe again.
“You could have killed him. What if Alfred had had a heart attack or something?” he looked over at you, amused.
“I swear, despite how it may have looked, he was actually having a good time. He is the one that suggested the movie in the first place!” Your eyes were again pleading for him to not think you’d put Alfred through a horrible ordeal on purpose. “Could you finish it with me though? I think it’s almost over.” You grabbed the remote and looked cheerfully at him.
With a slight grumble, Bruce situated himself better in the chair and took the remote from you. He raised the armrest and opened his arm to the side so you could cuddle up to him.
“No more screaming though” he said scoldingly.
“You don’t scream at horror movies? Nothing scares the big brave Batman?” He could feel your cheek against his shoulder as you smiled, teasing him.
Bruce held out the remote to play the movie again but hesitated.
“The thought of you being hurt is the only thing that truly scares me.”
You raised your head up and he lightly kissed your forehead. Then, turning back to the screen, he pushed play. You got the hint. He did have to get going soon. You settled back into him and didn’t really notice the last bit of the movie. You were too busy thinking about how grateful you were to be in your own private hero's arms.

I am very sad we didn't get to see more of Autobot Knock Out. So much I even have a fan episode idea. It's pretty garbage, but anyway.
Mb I'll write a fic about it *cough cough*forget about operation:redemption I literally can't finish stuff.
It's basically about how KO would get accepted into the team.
At first red finished bot will be distrusted, naturally. And he'll try to win them over. But millions of years working with Decepticons do change a bot. So what seems normal to KO is absolutely unacceptable to Autobots. For example, if someone loses their arm, a bot obsessed with his paint job will just find some vehicon and take their arm instead. Or actively take prisoners and interrogate them (like he did with Smokescreen). And when Optimus (in this timeline he hasn't died yet because I said so) gives him a pep talk, KO genuinely doesn't understand what is he doing wrong? Because, when you're a Decepticon, you don't bother much with ethics. It's either you complete your mission successfully, or you might be on the receiving end of Megatron's anger. So seeing Optimus disapproving of his "success" And yet forgive others failed missions made KO resent team prime a little bit.
Then, he was demoted to "nurse" despite being qualified enough to do operations without supervision. And it's even if Knock Out is lucky enough to be allowed to operate at all. Ofc, their reactions are more than understandable, but it still hurts. Ratchet watches his every move, because they spend all their time in the base.
That's the third thing that pisses KO off. He has to stay in base because of his "misconduct". And red finished bot hates having to stay inside. He loves going to drive in theaters or race with others, but now he isn't allowed even a step out.
The tipping point of the situation is when whole team prime (-Ratchet) go on a mission to fight decepticons. This mission is very important, but despite KO's desire to help, Optimus eventually asks Knock out to stay. He says it's because they "are in no need of another scout, but a second medic will be necessary if we wish to end this mission with no losses". When the team left, KO stayed for a bit, before quietly sneaking out. He is very infuriated and tired of playing Ratchet's little helper, and if team prime doesn't accept him, then he's free to do whatever he wants.
Once the gang gets back, mostly in one piece, Optimus notices KO's absence. Autobots have no way of getting through to ex decepticon, because they didn't have his comm nor have his location. Despite some bots being fine with his disappearance (Bulk and Smokey are still very distrustful), leader decided to meet up with him and talk things through.
Turns out KO went to the nearest drive in theater. OP comes up to his new subordinate, and watches the movie for a while, before asking if KO would like to talk. When smooth talking and flirty jokes didn't get "sweet rims" To go away, red bot finally decides to tell the truth. Optimus understands KO's frustrations and gently points out that stay at the base and absence from any too risky battles weren't meant to make KO feel unaccepted, but to keep him safe. Now that he has betrayed Decepticons, he is pretty high on "to kill" List. Yet his cruel actions still aren't accepted, because Autobots aren't like Decepticons, and team prime isn't like Megatron's gang. They do not use violence unless it is necessary.
This talk eases a lot of KO's concerns and after they get back to the base, he'll try to behave better.
Sorry if this post is very messy. I really wanted to get this idea out of my head and make it sound interesting.
