It Certainly Is a Day Snippet

I was tagged by @melestasflight @sallysavestheday @luthnethril and @aredhels thank you all so much! Have a snippet from a little russingon post re-embodiment thing that won't leave me alone! <3

They move into a small house south of Tirion, overlooking the Bay of Eldamar. They can see Alqualondë from here, Tol Eressëa on a clear day. Each morning, Maedhros stands on top of the jagged cliff, and thinks of falling. Of how it feels like flying, right until it does not. He thinks of his brother, still wandering shores he cannot see no matter how he strains his eyes. Each morning, Fingon appears beside him, steady to his left. Takes Maedhros’ hand and looks down at the white shores that, ages past, had been soaked red by both their hands. They both think, then, of how it had been the worst of Fingon’s deeds, save loving Maedhros only. How it does not even make the top five of Maedhros’ ranking anymore. It is not, Maedhros thinks, that Fingon is no longer angry. It is just that Fingon has never let anything as clean-cut as betrayal stop him from loving Maedhros in despite.

Hey random question - in trailer you posted - who do you think Spooner is shouting at about hoping they lose everything? I don’t want her to turn on the legends! You said you don’t think the wedding they showed is THE wedding - so you think there will be a second one? I hope so. It’s so sad that their wedding got wrecked. I just want them to be happy. Ava crying makes me worried. X

I mean, look. I don't know anything you don't but it's clear the Legends are Really Going Through It in the back half of the season and I think there's going to be some big emotional ups + downs. But I also don't want to speculate too heavily on what they're going to be. Based on what I've seen of John's arc so far I have an ending I really don't want for him, but I also really want to enjoy the experience of being hopeful and watching the season unfold so I'm trying not to spend too much mental energy working out whether that's the ending he'll get this season.

I 100% don't think Spooner will turn on the Legends. There's really been no indication of that, and tbh if she does she was probably possessed or something and with this show like. Who HASN'T tried to murder everyone while possessed at this point that's basically Wednesday.

Re: the Avalance wedding like. To be honest, the wedding shot in the teaser is Very Much Not To My Taste so it may be wishful thinking that it's a fakeout. I know that this is me being a thirtysomething queer and my own personal taste but I actually really hate when WLW weddings are super normative, SPECIFICALLY the two femmes white dress/white femme pantsuit thing. It's very mid-90s and very palatable to a straight audience and it's FINE and I know legit wlws who have had that kind of wedding because it feels most authentic for them so like. It's not bad to have per se? But if you’re like, “Cousin J, what’s awesome about queer weddings” my answer is. . .not that. 

The thing that has charmed me about Sara and Ava has always been that vibe of like.

(Ok and the disclaimer here is like: yes they're two thin femme white blonde women who are conventionally attractive, there are limits to how transgressive they will ever be wrt the broader Representation Discussions absolutely.)

(And no neither of them is butch, Sara and Ava are a lot of things but they 100% do not embody the butch/femme dichotomy no matter how many secret butch/gnc Ava aus I spin in my personal time.)

BUT.

Within those limitations the arc of them has always been like. A little bit scrappy, a little bit found-family, the fact that they're both messed up in their own way and that the parameters of normativity have never really fit right. That's why they work for me, and I think whenever I've headcanoned them having some kind of long term partnership I've always thought of whatever wedding they have also fitting that mold. And also narratively looking at the pattern of their “engagement story,” like. I think my ideal would be PotC3 style, they get married on a runaway train in the old west or they get space married and Kayla officiates like I don’t know what precise components it should have but I know how I want it to feel, if that makes sense? And it should feel weird and kind of slapped together and maybe everyone’s in pyjamas but the emotional core of it is there and that’s what matters.

And honestly this is Broader Old Lady Advice but like. People can still be totally happy as married humans even if their wedding a) sucks or b) is ruined. Weddings, in the scheme of life, are important for the time that you’re planning them and for abouuuut 3 months afterwards, but marriage is an awfully long time and the quality of the wedding has absolutely zero bearing on the quality of a marriage.

I was in no way prepared for the amount that this pairing Came For Me. I mean, I really should have been, considering on how many different elements and tropey things i love are embodied in both characters & their relationship in just the tiny bit we get to see--and then there’s so much offscreen to think about--but yeah, this pairing just Gets Me in the best way.

without like. writing a whole ship manifesto, I love it both as a ship and because it functions as Wanting Nice Things for both characters? like I want sms to have someone who recognizes his strengths and appreciates him, and I want jgy to have someone who’s wholeheartedly on his side and cares for him with the same devoted intensity that he tends to care for other people. suyao fulfills both those things!

2. lan xichen/jin guangyao/su she

to poorly quote a post i half remember and can’t recall where i saw it (source originally @madtomedgar) it’s time for lan xichen to get pulled into an ill-advised throuple with someone he hates as karma for the 3zun thing

in all seriousness, i love the potential of this trio. xiyao and suyao are both Good Ships already and the sms-lxc dynamic is potentially fascinating--not quite enough to get them a solo spot on the list, but still great. there’s the fact that in cql especially, sms is one of the only people lxc just... does not like, which i find delightful because half of my desires re: fic are ‘make lxc confront having negative emotions’; especially since it has that element ‘if I don’t like him, but jgy does, what does that mean’ etc. sms, on the other hand, has a whole tangled mess of emotions in regard to lxc. there’s the ‘head of the sect that i got kicked out of/left’ thing, the ‘official boyfriend of the person I care for more than anything’ thing, ‘foremost example of perfect cultivator manhood that i’m continually being reminded i fail at’ thing (the ‘guy i was desperately in love with as a teenager and eventually realized he barely knew i existed’ thing...)

literally i’ve tried to write this a dozen times and each time it gets too long lol i just have a lot of excited feelings about this ship

3. xue yang/su she

this is more of a vitriolic broship, but I have to count it just due to how much it delights me. interactions between these two keep sneaking into unrelated fics I write because they’re just so fun to play off each other; xy fucking with sms until sms finally gets enough nerve to fuck with him right back (which gives xy a solid minute of going ‘i have experienced a. workplace harassment??? i just feel so attacked right now??’ before he settles down) and the two of them absolutely embodying the dynamic where two characters are definitely smarter on their own but somehow reduce to having 1 brain cell when you put them together

(spinoff movie that’s just xy and sms in a ‘what the fuck did we do last night’ style comedy when)

4&5: I have no more like. Actual Ships with him, tbh. I know people ship him & lan wangji but like. even if I think sms had a crush on him at one point (like. i’m pretty sure you were assigned a crush on him by default if you were a teen in the gusu lan at the same time as him) unlike lxc which has a lot more nuance to it, lwj and sms just. seem to straight up hate each other, and not in a particularly sexy way. probably the closest I’ve come to the ship is thinking idly about how murdering jin zixun could conceivably be played as proxymurder of lwj, especially with the donghua’s slightly more delightfully unhinged sms; so honorable mention I suppose, and maybe I’ll come around to it more in the future?
