Please ignore the fact I accidentally posted this and then deleted it okay anyways
These two have had a myriad of personal conflicts over the years. They had a difficult relationship as children and then spent the rest of their adolescence and early adulthood separately. They interacted, of course, and they saw each other as brothers, but that was it. We are related by blood, but I don’t see you as FAMILY family. If that makes sense. But if I had to pick their biggest fight, it would be:
Tl;Dr: Emotions were running high and unchecked after Italian unification, leading to a blow-out fight when Romano announced that he was moving to America for a little while.
I need to provide some context and explain my headcanons, so this might be a long one kjdfgk I hope it makes sense! Also, a warning because my Feli isn't all that canon-compliant ;; but I think he's a bit more accurate to the northern attitudes of the time
There's a common headcanon within the fandom that Romano was entirely against unification and resisted it from the start. I think this is a bit of an inaccurate and an over-simplified perspective. By the early and mid 1800s, there were many instances of uprisings against absolutism in Southern Italy, which strove for more liberal ideals. The revolutionaries wanted a constitutional monarchy, or even a republic. Through their uprisings and the creation of a secret, revolutionary network across the peninsula, revolutionary ideals began to spread throughout and inspire others.
This is of course a gross oversimplification of the history, but I’m bringing this all up to illustrate the idea that Romano was starting to grow tired of the “status quo”, and was desperate for a change. Unification wasn’t necessarily what he had in mind at first, especially when we consider that he and Feliciano were pretty distant at this point in time. However he soon got swept up in the fervor and optimism of the patriots, and he began to believe in their vision. He believed in a future where he could finally be truly independent- free to call the shots and live his life freely without the worry of being tossed around and claimed by other European powers. He believed in a future where, maybe, he could have a family again. To fix what was broken between him and Feliciano. Romano may come across as quite crude, but he’s a very passionate man. Someone who loves and craves so deeply, to the point where his heart/imagination can far outrun him.
So imagine the betrayal felt when he realized that unification wasn’t working in his favour. He was practically discarded, and seen as “lesser than” his northern brother. His brother, who treated him as an oddity, and had an air of moral superiority over Romano. They kept each other at arm's length, as though they were roommates forced to endure the other, rather than two brothers sharing a home. Disillusioned and hurt, Romano felt like a fool for believing in a dream that didn’t come true.
Feliciano struggled with many emotional grievances, which Romano wasn’t privy to. He lost his long-time husband/partner just a few decades prior, and instead of taking the time to confront the grief, he picked himself back up and turned his attention towards independence and unification. He threw himself head first into uprisings, wars, political negotiations, and rallies- all to achieve this patriotic goal of forming “Italy”, and perhaps to distract himself from the loss (though he won’t admit it). He also thought, maybe foolishly, that his life would get better after unifying with his brother. That he would have a family again, that he wouldn’t feel so alone, that he would love and be loved and they could hold hands and skip happily into a field of sunshine and rainbows and everything would be okay–
What should have brought them together, they both realized, seemed to drive a deeper wedge between them. The reality was that they were incompatible. They couldn’t stand each other. To Feliciano, Romano was nothing but an uncivilized brute who only complained and never wanted to work, and lived to insult him every day. To Romano, Feliciano was a pompous, stuck-up elite asshole who refused to acknowledge the very real pain and disillusionment of his new, southern citizens. Both brothers felt as though everything- all the blood, sweat, and tears- was just a massive waste.
As you can imagine, it was a VERY tense and unhappy household for many reasons. They began to argue. A LOT. Fights that were far uglier than the scraps they had as children. It got to a point where they couldn’t even stand to be in the same room as each other.
It all came to a head, however, when Romano announced that he was leaving. He had his motives, reasonable ones too, but Feliciano didn’t see that. All he saw was his no-good, lazy brother abandoning him and their country after all the effort they put into creating it, leaving him with all the stress and work while he galavants off to America. This was the straw that broke the camel’s back. The announcement devolved into an explosive fight. Things were said that, to this day, haven’t been fully forgiven. With all the anger and tension, they probably threw in a few good punches as well. Romano eventually left, and Feliciano thought to himself “Good riddance”. However as time wore on, they couldn’t help but think about the other, wonder how they were doing, and reflect on how they parted ways.
Things were still a bit tense when Romano returned, and they didn’t acknowledge the fight for a while. However, they began putting a bit more effort into rekindling their relationship. It took some time, and it wasn’t an easy journey, but they’re in a much healthier place now than before. They’re glued at the hip, they share everything, they know every little quirk and detail about the other, and they’ve begun to love each other as family (though teasing and head-butting is a common occurrence).
If you asked them back then if they would go through unification, they would be incredibly iffy. But if you asked them now, they would likely say yes. They wouldn't trade their brother for anything in the world.

──✩₊⁺⋆☾⋆⁺₊✧──
You played with the food that was left on your plate.
When Lea's phone ringed, she quickly got up and walked off to answer it. Mumbling a quick "I'll be right back."
You were left to chat with Klara and Feli. After you were all done, you decided to head to your rooms. You suspected your roommate had just decided to go straight to bed.
As you passed by the lobby, you walked head down, looking at your feet and letting out a yawn. Before you could get to the elevator, you felt someone grab your attention.
It was Syd pointing at something behind you.
Your face twisted in confusion as your heart beat faster. You see Obi, standing there, one hand holding the crutches and the other, arms open for you.
You quickly walked up to her, carefully wrapping her in your embrace.
"Lena! What? How?" you said looking over to the blonde girl holding her bags. "Lea!"
"I just found out, I swear!"
"Sorry for the scare, I took the first plane here. My phone was off." she said before placing a kiss to your forehead.
"Why?"
"I needed to be here. For the team. And most of all, for you."
You only shook your head, for a second not believing, your girlfriend was actually there.
But you moved aside so the girls could hug her too.
Followed by everyone headed up for a night of sleep, deciding to catch up in the morning.
"Should we go put these bags up in my room?" she offered.
"Yes." you said picking both bags up.
"I can carry one of th-"
"Absolutely not." you cut her off.
──✩₊⁺⋆☾⋆⁺₊✧──
You were staying the night at her room, no discussion about that. You had missed her like crazy.
She carefully studied you slightly. Trying to find the best way to touch on the topic.
"Your eyes are puffy." she noted softly, laying spread out in bed.
"I broke down after the game." you answered, adjusting a pillow under her leg.
"I saw. The cameraman really focused on it."
"I'm sorry." you let out a breath and she immediately looked at you like you were talking nonsense. "I failed the team today. I wasn't on my best performance."
"You don't have to apologize. This is a sport won and lost as a team. You know that." she pulled you to cuddle on her chest.
"I wanted to win this for you."
"I'm proud of you regardless. And you need to cheer up. Tomorrow is a new day and you still have a medal to win."
"I love you."
"I love you too. So much."

3 - Favourite "Resident of the Week"
Dr. Smith, who decided to risk death by hydrophobia and exposure in the Pacific Northwest rather than continue to be owned by Ærolith. An icon.
8 - Favourite piece of random worldbuilding / lore Adam threw into an episode without ever explaining or elaborating
And on top of all of that, we never even got a clear answer about the Tall Man! Why did it want Dr. Young! Is it still alive on Floor 13? How could it possibly be contained there; the things needed to contain FUTURE is very different than what is needed to contain an otherworldly horror!
13 - You have to be roommates with one of the main characters - who do you pick?
I'm picking SAYER, and hear me out as to why. I'm not going to enjoy rooming with any of them. Yes, even that one, I've thought about it and I don't think I'd like it. But with SAYER, I can at least argue with it a bunch and probably win several of those arguments. It gets emotionally wounded surprisingly easily. If I found a couple of weak points, I could jab them constantly. Listen. I'm not really. A nice person, sometimes. And if I'm forced to room with someone I don't like, better someone I can win against.
18 - Which of the canon character dynamics is your favourite/do you find most interesting?
I already said Matsuda and OCEAN, and I'm just going to take SAYER and Hale as a given, so now I'm gonna say. Brady and Young. Because it's just so funny. They're so petty. And oblivious. Guys, you are dealing with unbelievably dangerous forces here, please focus.
23 - Say you got through the excruciating employment process - regardless of what you would like to do - what job would Ærolith think you're best suited for?
I said tier one before, and probably something unpleasant. Maybe something that involved testing out my absolutely fucked up and overpowered immune system. It attacks everything, including myself. Maybe they'll just induce allergy attacks for "science" until I die.
28 - What would your Thought Password be(e)?
You walk into a room onboard a ship. You can barely stand due to the waves. In front of you is a needle you have to prick yourself on. Due to the waves, you can't do so careful, and end up impaling your hand on it awkwardly.
33 - In the parallel universe in which we get that happy ending where SAYER and Hale end up only somewhat grudgingly living together and learning how to be happy and care for themselves and each other - what do they call the stray cat that keeps showing up at their doorstep?
SAYER calls it Felis Catus, because it doesn't want to admit that it's attached to the cat, and pretends that it's just a random fauna sample. Hale calls it Cat and feeds it every day.

Asylum - Chapter One
Hello, welcome to this venture !
This is a fic co-written by myself and @somebratinamask
There are several chapters planned, but for now there are two written. This is a fic primarily devoted to RusAme, but GerIta is essential to the plot and will come up later.
We hope you enjoy.
On AO3. On FFn.
Chapter One : The Delusions of Alfred F. Jones
Alfred F. Jones was an honest, true, good American, and as such, he did not lie. Well, sometimes he had to lie, but that was always for the greater good, for helping people, so it wasn't the same thing as lying-lying. It was like telling kids about Santa, or the Tooth Fairy, because it was fun and for their own good, and that was why Alfred lied, sometimes, but not today.
No, not today when the concerned nurse frowned down at him and asked him: "Why did you go into the burning building, Alfred? Can you tell me that?"
So, Alfred F. Jones said what he said when it wasn't a Santa situation, which was the truth: "Because I'm a fireman."
The nurse, who had kind eyes even if her mouth was set a little hard, looked at him with soft admiration. "No, Alfred, you're not a fireman. Can you tell me why you ran into the fire?"
Of course Alfred was a fireman, he had wanted to be a fireman since he was, what, seven years old? He had been running into smoky buildings for, what, at least six years now? Something like that, after college, and he just hadn't had time to grab his equipment, but people had been in trouble, and so Alfred did what firemen do and ran into the fire.
He told the nurse this.
And then Matthew burst into the room.
"You're an idiot, Alfred!" Matthew said, voice on the edge of hysterics.
"Calm down, Mattie, I'm f—"
"You're not fine! You almost died from smoke inhalation, Alfred, do you understand me!? You almost died." Matt collapsed in a chair and put his face in his hands. "I can't do this anymore, Alfred, I just can't."
God, his brother was so hysterical sometimes. He always blew things out of proportion and always bitched and moaned about how Alfred wasn't being responsible, but Alfred saw an issue and you know what, Alfred acted, that was more than Matthew could say for himself.
But, of course, it wasn't Alfred's job to tell Matt how timid he was. Alfred struggled to sit up under the wires checking his pulse and the IV lines and the oxygen mask, and leaned over to give Mattie a reassuring squeeze on the knee, and a kind smile, because it was alright.
"Mattie, come on now, I've gotten into scrapes worse than this. I'm a fireman, remember—"
Matthew looked at the nurse, eyes wide. "He does this. He's fine for a few months and then he'll do something fucking stupid like this and—and—he's never done anything like this before. It's just—he'll climb trees to get cats or walk around at night being a vigilante he's never… never…"
The nurse clicked her tongue.
In hindsight, Alfred should have lied.
He had nothing against the nurse, he was sure she was perfectly fine in her spare time, but also she was sort of a giant bitch.
This new nurse, a woman with a smile that was much warmer than the other nurse, took his blood pressures and asked him if he was on any medication, explained her name was Amy, and that she was going to be showing him around, where the bathrooms were, that he had to keep his wristband on with his name.
The whole place was basically a giant circle, with rooms lining either side—well, not a circle, but a square, but it looped around—and there was only one set of doors out, the one that Alfred came through. He had been buzzed in and then Amy had relocked the doors.
"Hey, Amy," Alfred said, giving her a warm smile, "why are the doors locked?"
Well, apparently not everyone wanted to be here, which was fair. Alfred didn't particularly want to be here either, but he wondered if Amy thought he was one of the unruly ones, because of course he wasn't, even if that bitchy nurse had listened to his hysterical brother, but this was a misunderstanding.
Alfred found that if he was agreeable, even if it was silly, people cut him slack.
Still though. He eyed the locked doors as they passed by. And the nurses' station was locked. He watched the nurses—who didn't wear scrubs, even though they were in the hospital—jingle their keys to enter the sections Alfred was barred from.
Amy returned. "Have you ever taken antipsychotic pills, Alfred?"
"Nah, I'm healthy."
Amy nodded, and then explained that he wasn't a fireman—Jesus, what was it with these people? You'd think they had his autobiography run through an antonym machine—and that these pills would help him have a better grip on his "situation."
Alfred smiled and swallowed them down pleasantly enough.
At least Matthew had brought him an overnight bag.
Alfred had never had a roommate before.
Alfred watched his sleeping form intently, chin resting in his hand. The only roommate he had ever had was Mattie, and it was exactly as much fun as was to be expected. Matthew hadn't even let Alfred get a dog—can you believe that? Get a dog, like Matt was his dad or some shit.
"Can I help you?" The roommate was looking at Alfred.
Alfred grinned. "Good, you're up. I'm Alfred F. Jones, and I'm a fireman. I hope we can split this rent evenly between the two of us, and I'm getting a dog, so I hope you're a dog person."
The roommate blinked at him. "Hello, Alfred, it's three in the morning. I would appreciate it if you would stop muttering and let me get some sleep."
Ah, so if that was how the roommate was going to be, that was fine. But of course, they wouldn't let Alfred switch roommates, it was too late or early or something, and this other nurse was much bigger and had an actual uniform on, and he told Alfred to get back to bed in a way Alfred was familiar with, because it was usually how people spoke to him before they punched him.
"Hey, easy, big guy! Alright, alright, I'm going to bed. It's just that this guy over here sucks, and—"
"Back to bed, Jones."
Two out of the three nurses so far were giant dickheads. Alfred was not impressed.
"Alfred?"
Alfred stood up and gave a little bow to the circle. "Hello, all! I am Alfred F. Jones, the best damn fireman this side of the Mississippi, which is saying a lot, considering how heavily populated the East Coast is! See these burns? I got them from saving people from a blaze! I had smoke inhalation."
Of course, no one was awake this early in the morning, and the nurses took his blood pressure and talked to him in soothing voices and gave him more pills and no one even asked what it was like being a fucking fireman, which was cool as shit, but whatever, fine.
One jumpy kid gave him a curious look. "Are you really a fireman?"
Alfred jumped on the opportunity this—what was his name? Feli-something? This Feli, then—gave him. Yes, you should have seen the fire. Alfred threw his hands in the air, making a whooshing noise of the timbers being eaten—the heat, Feli, you could have felt it from forty feet away, and it was night, of course, so Alfred's eyes had been drawn to the light like a moth to a flame, the cinders flying into the air so high they could have burned the underside of planes—
Which was a thought, because Alfred had a pilot's license, too—
But the fire, yes, and Alfred had just known there was someone calling for help, trapped under a fallen support beam, so of course Alfred had barged in there, searching frantically through the smoke, his glasses practically melting on his nose.
Feli watched, enraptured, captivated by this story, and Alfred was happy he could make at least one friend in this place.
The afternoon brought with it drowsiness. Alfred sat on his bed, looking at the bandages on his hands, rerunning the story he had told that Feli-kid, fixing details he had forgotten, like how this woman was worried about her baby and was yelling for help, that was—
"I haven't introduced myself."
Alfred looked up at the shit roommate. "Oh, now you want to talk?"
"Yes, when it's not the middle of the night, I think you will find me much more amicable. I'm Ivan."
Alfred rolled his eyes.
"So, you're a fireman? I heard that little story you told Feliciano."
Ah, so Ivan had been listening. Well, good. "Yeah, but I had forgotten some stuff. There's a lot to it, you know, there's a lot to saving people."
"And being a pilot?"
That's right, that's where Alfred had received his firefighting training. You just don't show up to a big ass fire without training, so they taught that in the air force, in case the planes ever caught fire on the air force ships, or the field, how to save people. Alfred wasn't lying about that, Alfred didn't lie, like everyone kept saying.
Ivan asked after Alfred's hands, and Alfred had to end up showing him the burns, explaining how it had been from moving fallen timbers, and of course he usually wore gear, but there was no time to act, this lady was screaming for her kid and what was Alfred going to do? What was smoke inhalation to saving a child? A baby, two actually.
Sometimes, you just needed to act.
Ivan gave him a look—probably feeling bad he had been a dick earlier. But by this point, Alfred was tired of talking.
Alfred didn't like this doctor.
"Alfred, I'm going to need you to cooperate. The only way you can get better is to work with me here."
The doctor was fucking condescending, that's what. There was nothing wrong with Alfred, this was all a misunderstanding, for fuck's sake Alfred was a pilot, he had saved a family from a fucking fire, he didn't need to be in the hospital, right?
And how were the meds making Alfred feel?
Tired, they were making him tired and sluggish. Alfred had slept all afternoon, and then had been kept in his room by another dickhead nurse who said it was too late to walk, so Alfred was left jiggling his knee all night and wondering where the fuck all his shoelaces had gone, and why hadn't Matthew packed him anything to do.
And look, he had a twitch.
"That's a side effect."
To what?
And then the doctor spouted off the name of the medication which meant dick-all to Alfred, and again, they were antipsychotic meds, but Alfred wasn't doing anything psychotic!
It was like having the same conversation on a loop.
"Alfred."
Alfred focused on Matthew. "Please tell me you brought something for me to do. I'm bouncing off the walls here, I'm going fucking crazy."
Matt nodded. "I brought you the stuff you keep hidden under your bed."
The good stuff, how did he know where Alfred kept the good stuff? All the good comics collectors would kill to have—
"Alfred."
"Yeah?"
"Alfred, why do you think you're a pilot?"
"Because how else would I have training for the fire?" Alfred held up his bandaged hands.
Mattie nodded. "So, you're in the military?"
"Yes."
Mattie nodded again. "Okay. How old are you?"
"Do you seriously not know how old I am?"
"Of course I do, I'm your brother. Just humor me and I'll give you comics."
Alfred rolled his eyes. He loved his brother, but look, again with the dad shit, the ultimatums! "I'm twenty-four."
"Okay, and when did you go to the military?"
"I—"
Mattie leaned forward. "No, think about it. It wasn't when you were eighteen, right? Because you went to college for a bit, remember? Until you were twenty-two, right? And then we moved closer to our Dads, right? How were you trained and deployed in two years?"
"People are trained and deployed in two years—"
"No, because you were there for the vow renewals, right?"
Alfred frowned. Yeah, that was right, that shit was boring and long and sappy, and Alfred had nearly torn his skin off keeping still that long, but he had smiled and hugged everyone like his Father had told him to do, good boy.
"Alfred, you're not a pilot, right?"
Right, yeah, of course. Who the fuck had been saying he's a pilot? That's stupid—although, of course, he could see where the confusion could come in, Alfred was very trim and had the calm demeanor of a pilot—but Alfred hadn't had the time to enlist, unfortunately, he was busy at school.
And busy with the volunteer firefighters, of course.
But Alfred kept that to himself and Mattie gave him a box filled with, finally, something interesting.
Feli was saying something interesting. "I know it's all in my head, I get that, but it doesn't stop me from hearing things, you know? And then you start to wonder what's real or not, because how can you really know, know, you know? Because sometimes you ignore something and it's real."
Ivan tilted his head. "What are you thinking about?"
Alfred picked at the scabs on his hands, irritated with them. They were itchy and he was tired and twitchy and the shit Matthew had brought him had only lasted—only lasted for a few hours, and now Alfred was without things to do, and he was stuck watching boring movies and walking outside for like, two seconds.
So that thing Feli had said the other day was eating at him. Because he had sounded delusional, right? That's what Alfred thought, anyways, because how the fuck do you mishear things that are real? Maybe fake things, but it's like when there's a ringing in your ears, you make a noise in your throat and the fake ringing fades back and you can figure out it was just the blood in your ears.
"Yes, Feliciano has schizophrenic."
Right, exactly, Alfred knew that shit, he was wondering more like, well, what was Alfred doing here? Clearly it was a misunderstanding, but Matthew had been here, and Matt didn't do anything without calling Papa and talking for fucking hours on end, so Alfred's parents knew he was here, but Alfred wasn't a schizo, just—
"You're not delusional?" Ivan asked, raising his eyebrows.
Alfred glared at him. "No, I'm not fucking delusional."
"You take the same pills as Feliciano, don't you?"
Ivan didn't know if they were the same pills.
"I do, actually. Small, yellow, with a line through the middle."
Alfred's mind jumped back to that morning, when meds were being passed out. Yeah, yeah, that sounded about right. That's what his looked like, anyways, and yes, actually, he was sure Feli did take the same ones.
"Same ones Feliciano takes," Ivan insisted.
Well, clearly that was just a mistake, then. All Alfred had to do was go to one of the nurses and tell them they had messed up the medication, just knock on that glass and smile like he did and tell them no, he wasn't a schizophrenic, not like Feli—
"That wouldn't work though, would it?" Ivan asked.
Alfred hesitated at the door. Ivan knew what drugs he and Feli took. "Why wouldn't it?"
Ivan gave a casual shrug and leaned back against his pillows. "I could see them messing up your drugs once, twice, maybe even three times. But you've been here, what, two weeks now? You've talked to the doctor how many times, to your nurse Amy, and they keep giving you the 'wrong' drugs?"
"You're saying it's intentional?"
Ivan gave another little shrug and flipped a page in his book.
No, he couldn't just say that and fuck off. But that didn't make sense, Alfred was in a hospital, why would they give him the wrong medication on purpose? Although, none of the nurses wore any scrubs, and that was just sanitary, wasn't it, wearing scrubs? That had been bugging Alfred, and it was weird how they took his blood pressure, what did that have to do with anything?
And the twitch. Alfred looked at his hand that moved without his permission, and how he had been telling the doctor that he was drowsy. Or maybe they were placebo pills, doctors did that sometimes, too, to test medication. That would explain why they were giving it to Alfred, to test it.
Feli was absolutely no help. He had no idea what medication he was taking, or what it looked like, and he had no idea what his official diagnosis was, he just kept saying something about dopamine, which made no fucking sense. Feli had no idea if any of the nurses were registered, he had no idea what the doctor's last name even was because it was slipping Alfred's mind—
Wait, no it wasn't. What was it that Matthew had been saying the other day? Alfred had gone to college.
Of course Ivan knew what medication Alfred was taking, because Alfred had prescribed it to himself. Ivan must have seen the slip. Relief dropped down Alfred's back like warm water, and he smiled.
Ivan leaned close enough to whisper into Alfred's ear without Alfred's coworkers hearing. "I see you're still taking your pills."
Alfred pushed his glasses up the bridge of his nose and looked at Ivan through half-lidded eyes. "Of course I'm taking my pills. It would be dumb to waste the prescription. You're wrong, by the way, Feli and I don't take the same meds. I take Flutix and he takes Harbidrole. It's an easy mistake, really, they do look similar, but Harbidrole is used for schizophrenia, while I clearly don't have schizophrenia."
"Ah, so you're a doctor, now."
Yes, of course. Alfred was a little young, sure, but he was in advanced classes, and he was halfway through his residency before this little incident, he was studying—
"And the firefighting?"
What? Oh, yes, well, that was just on a volunteer basis, just to pad his resume so he could get into medical school, which was difficult enough, but Alfred managed it after only a year and a half at undergrad. It—
"So, if you don't mind me asking, why are you in a psych ward, Dr. Jones?"
Part of Alfred's residency, plus Alfred was feeling very stressed with medical school—
"And what is your diagnosis?"
"Like I said," Alfred said primly, "stress, mainly. That's what Flutix is used for. It has to do with dopamine."
"Oh, dopamine, of course. And dopamine has to do with stress, doesn't it, Dr. Jones."
"Yes." Alfred grinned. "Exactly. Very good."
"What are you studying?"
"Psychiatry."
Ivan tilted his head. "Could I ask you a question, Dr. Jones?"
"Of course. You are in a psych ward, of course, and I am studying psychiatry." Dr. Jones was a man of the people after all, and what was a little free consultation among—
"What would you diagnose me with?" Ivan's lips twitched into a small smile. "If you would allow me to pick your brain."
Well, that was an easy one. Ivan was clearly a neurotic, distrustful, prone to conspiracy theories. Dr. Jones didn't know how to concisely put it, but it was clear in the way Ivan distrusted the medication Alfred prescribed himself, and was generally shifty—
"I'm shifty?"
Dr. Jones blinked. "Yeah, you didn't want a roommate, right? Distrustful of someone new."
Ivan's eyes lit up. "Actually, I'm very pleased with the turn of events that led to my new roommate. Thank you, Alfred, this has been enlightening."
Ivan touched Dr. Jones' elbow lightly as he passed.
Dr. Jones watched him walk down the hall. Yeah, that's right, he could diagnose people, because he was a doctor, but he hadn't much time to really get an in-depth look into most patients' brains because he was still so new on the floor, but he had talked to Feli.
Feli glanced up as Dr. Jones approached and smiled, and boy, did Dr. Jones have some great news for Feli. No, Feli, Dr. Jones, Alfred was a doctor, please, stop deflecting, Dr. Jones had some great news for Feli, he didn't have schizophrenia, he had seizures.
Yes, Feli, that's what make sense, doesn't it? It explained the weird hallucinations, why Feli was so absentminded, a mild form of epilepsy, definitely, Feli should definitely let his primary care doctor know as soon as he saw her again—
Yes, of course Dr. Jones was a doctor, he was only a firefighter on a volunteer basis, and even that was pretty rare, no, listen, Feli, Dr. Jones had graduated early from medical school through an advanced program, and was in the middle of his residency and was here to get a feel of where he would be working, and also due to stress.
"A doctor? Alfred, does that make sense to you?" the fellow doctor sitting across from Dr. Jones asked.
"That's Dr. Jones to you."
Dr. Jones sat in stubborn silence and the doctor had the audacity to sigh and shuffle papers in front on him, saying they'll try again tomorrow, Alfred.
"That's Dr. Jones."
Dr. Jones sat on his bed, exhausted, watching Ivan, who wasn't doing all too terribly much. Now that Dr. Jones thought about it, both Ivan and Mattie did the same boring shit—namely, read a whole bunch. Didn't they get bored? Dr. Jones got bored watching them, and Dr. Jones was so fucking sick of being bored.
"What are you reading?" Alfred asked, nicking the book from Ivan's hands.
"Excuse me, I was reading that."
Yeah, and it was fucking boring. Dr. Jones walked back over to his bed and bent over the book, picking up where Ivan had left off, squinting through the dense, academic writing, trying to follow dates.
"It's a history book," Ivan said from the other side of the room.
Yeah, Dr. Jones could—
"Are you a fan of history?"
No, not really. It was always so dry for Dr. Jones' taste. It was cool when it was wars or explosions or spy missions, but mostly it was a lot of riots or picketing or death or presidents, and while it was interesting to learn, things like that didn't stick in Alfred's head very well, so he was left with a jumble of information and dates that didn't connect.
"I see." Ivan was clearly trying to get his book back with all this talk, but Dr. Jones wasn't—"What does stick in your head, then?"
"Physics." Alfred blinked at his own answer. "Math. Stuff with right and wrong answers."
Ivan watched Alfred flip through the pages of his book.
Alfred looked up. "I like space stuff. I thought it was really cool they could send satellites to different moons based on the gravity and orbit of other planets. I forget the word for it, but there's a way to make a satellite orbit around another body and then have it slingshot where you want it to go. Maybe it was slingshot-ing. Called that."
"So, my history book isn't very interesting to you, is it?"
Alfred snorted. No, of course it wasn't interesting, Dr. Jones only took it to see what was so fascinating—
"I have another book you might like."
If it was anything like the current book in Dr. Jones' possession—
Ivan sat up on his bed and reached underneath to pull out a plastic bin filled with books, enough to give even Matt a rough time of reading them all, which was saying something, and he moved a few stacks around until he found what he was looking for.
He held it out to Alfred. "Here."
Alfred already had a book—
Ivan waved the book in the air. "Come on, take it. You've read through those comics underneath your bed at least ten times, and I guarantee the book you have in your hands currently will put you to sleep faster than Flutix does."
Alfred stood and quickly exchanged books. Ivan didn't say another word, and curled back onto his bed, resuming where Alfred had left the pages.
Dr. Jones wasn't expecting much when he flipped open to a random page, but to his surprise, it was about space stuff. Granted, it was still boring ass history shit, but it went into the Cold War science behind all the space missions, how spies had stolen information.
Occasionally, Alfred would reach a part in the book that referenced something earlier that he hadn't read, so Alfred would need to flip back, but he would end up engrossed with this new part that led into the thing he had been reading later, so he would flip back and forth and back and forth and back and forth until there was nothing left.
And then Alfred started again.
Ivan glanced up at Alfred. "I was beginning to think I had lost you in there."
Alfred handed back the book and took a seat by Ivan on the ground because the chairs were too far away and Alfred had something he needed to do. He handed back the book and then handed him #4 of Mightnighter: Out.
Ivan raised an eyebrow and looked pleased. "I don't think I can spend three days reading a comic, but I will certainly do my…" Ivan actually seemed to get a good look at the cover. "There's… a hammer. And a sickle."
Yes, of course there was a hammer and sickle, Ivan was Russian.
"How did you know I was Russian?"
Well, it was easy with his last name and his accent, so slight that nothing but Alfred's trained ears could pick it up.
Alfred jumped up and nodded, because now Ivan could read about something he liked, as well, something he could connect with and take some hours away so he wasn't fidgety, either, something to keep his mind engaged and fingers from trembling even though he had told the doctor he was sick of the tic—
Ivan held the book back out. "You can keep it."
Alfred had snatched the book before he was even aware he had done it, it was just back in his hands. "You can't keep the comic."
"I wasn't planning to."
Few things went in the box, stuff that thieves and spies would spend hours pouring over, the smallest detail, the smallest word, the way the color faded into black or the way the plot twisted together from other stories to merge into a perfect issue that only made sense if you read the other ones, eyes red and tired and those who would spend days and days and days pouring over these things, studying, these are things that went in the box, to keep from those who would study instead.
These were precious things.
Alfred wondered, faintly whenever he caught himself waking up, why there weren't any windows in his room.
"You seem better."
Alfred glanced up from the table to Matthew, an ocean away on pills and the hard plastic-wood tables were made of. "There was nothing wrong with me to begin with." The words the doctor used came out across his tongue: "I get carried away with things."
Mattie let out a breath of air like a deflating balloon. "How are things?"
How were things? That was a question. "I sleep, a lot. And I've walked around that fucking ward enough times to wear a track in the linoleum, but I'm…"
He was what? Alfred could feel it, vaguely, something different, something just on the edge of his consciousness that usually got him going was bound and gagged, like the hum of a TV that was muted, a different sort of noise. It was strange and Alfred was afraid to think about it too much.
"It's good," Matthew said, firmly. "It's a good thing, the doctor said so."
Alfred frowned at this, and something about the phrase scratched at the back of his mind. Mattie told him about his shifts, about how Dad and Papa missed him and sent their love, of course. Alfred had the urge to scratch at his hairline.
"Are they coming to visit?"
Matt sighed again, and Alfred wondered when he had started doing that all the time, like everything Alfred said was the tenth time he had asked the same thing. "No, I don't think so. But I did bring you some things—"
"Why won't they visit?"
Matthew stared at him like a sinking ship. "Because they don't want to. They say it makes them too sad, Alfred, and I'm inclined to agree. What are you doing here!?"
That was a good question, wasn't it?
Matthew let out another fucking sigh. "God, Alfred, what are you doing here?"
"Well, do you have something to say?"
Matthew let out a little laugh. "Do I have something to say—do you think you'll hear it? Or will you just get that deranged look in your eye and start rambling away about some—" Mattie hissed the word: "Bullshit and ruin things again?"
That wasn't fucking fair, Alfred didn't ruin jackshit—
"Yes, you have, and what's worse, you don't even think, you're a million miles away—"
Across a sea— "How the fuck do you know what my doctor said?"
Matthew froze for just a second, in the middle of looking around, of his shoulders slumping. "I didn't, I just know what an improvement looks like."
Alfred stood. "You're fucking lying. You're not my emergency contact, I didn't give you permission to talk to my doctor, it's none of your fucking business about why I'm in here."
Matthew let out a laugh of sharp air. "It's not my business—do you hear yourself? Like I haven't been fucking forced into your business for years—"
"There you go again with that dad bullshit again!"
"What on earth are you—"
"You act like I'm a little kid!" Alfred loomed over Matthew.
Matthew didn't stand, face-to-face with Alfred, nose inches from his own, didn't shove him back, no, Mattie just sank further into his seat. "You are a little kid."
"Leave."
Matthew opened his mouth—
Alfred shoved Matthew, and his brother threw out his arms to stop himself from falling backwards out of the chair. "Alfred what the—"
"Leave and take your fucking party favors with you. They don't make up for the fact you use me to feel better about yourself, that treating me like an idiot makes you feel better because no one gives a shit about you, not Dad, not Papa, and especially not me."
Matt didn't even look up at him. "You're unbelievable, you know that?"
"No, I'm just usually too nice to tell you the obvious, but I'm sick of your sighing and I'm sick of the shit you bring me and I'm sick of you talking to my doctor and I'm sick of all of this!" Alfred whirled to the blond nurse hovering nearby. "And you can tell my fucking doctor that if I hear he's been talking to my brother, there's not a strong enough lock to keep me from leaving this place."
Now Matthew stood. "You're being—"
"Leave."
"You talked to my brother."
The doctor looked impassively back at him over his desk. "Does that bother you?"
"Yes, it fucking bothers me. What about doctor-patient confidentiality, doc? What about you not telling fucking lies to my brother about me?"
Oh, but they weren't lies, Alfred, he was just updating Matthew on Alfred's situation, but there wasn't a fucking situation! For fuck's sake, Alfred shouldn't be in here! And it was god damned illegal to keep him here without his permission.
"Matthew was concerned about your delusions, Alfred."
Delusions, delusions, what fucking delusions, those were misunderstandings, those were idiots, those were the doctor saying things about Alfred that just weren't true, maybe you're fucking delusional!
"Clearly, you're in no position to talk right now, Alfred. We'll try again tomorrow."
Alfred didn't care about the fucking penguins, or about their stupid fucking eggs, or about how they were still in fucking Antarctica even though they should have fucking died off hundreds of years ago, thousands, millions, the timescale of evolution.
Alfred felt his eyes flicking from person to person until he reached an awfully large gap he hadn't noticed before, and his eyes landed on Ivan, an island in the tightly packed folding chairs of movie night.
"Look at the chick, Alfred," Feli breathed next to him.
Feli kept saying stupid shit like that, while Ivan got to have three chair-lengths of space around him like an asteroid impact.
And one that followed Ivan around like a bubble.
In the morning vitals line, Alfred could have sat in a chair between Ivan and the next person.
At recreation time, Ivan by the window, reading, people moving around him like water around a smooth stone that licked his finger to turn pages.
At meals, a table to himself, a fortress, a minefield.
Outdoors, Ivan could have been a hiker, alone, the last one on the Earth, walking through a field with his hands behind his back and a tent he could set up in abandoned cities.
A lion gripped a gazelle in his teeth while Alfred neatly stepped over the chairs in front of him and sat down next to Ivan. If Ivan was surprised, if Alfred held more interest than the stupid fucking Savannah, he certainly didn't show it.
"People are afraid of you."
Ivan's eyes held only the screen in front of him and did not turn their attention to Alfred. "I am trying to watch the movie. Your voice is loud and distracting."
"You don't give a shit about the movie."
"Interesting conclusion, because I'm watching it."
Alfred looked between Ivan and the projection. "Who gives a shit about lions?"
"Obviously not you."
Ivan's eyes were still glued to the screen and it was pissing Alfred right the fuck off.
"No one talks to you. All yesterday, no one, just the nurses and I would guess your doctor, but it must get lonely. All you do is read books and watch the shitty documentaries and nod when the nurses ask you to do something, and you don't have visitors that often, and you read fast and no one else reads the things you do so you have no one to talk to about them."
Finally, Ivan turned his eyes "So, Mr. Popular is pitying me? I have some bad news: I'm not going to sit at your lunch table."
"I wasn't inviting you." Alfred grinned at him. "But you are lonely. Or something. You didn't answer my questions, see, you're fucking deflecting and that shit doesn't work anymore. I might twitch like a motherfucker but you're lying, Braginski."
Half of Ivan's face was illuminated by the sunlit world an ocean away, and the other half was not. "And what am I lying about, Jones?"
Alfred stood and a shadow ate the projection. "You would totally sit at my lunch table if I invited you."
Ivan did not have any more books. He had boxes and boxes full of shit, but he did not have any more books, and Alfred should know, he had been digging under Ivan's bed nearly all evening, pulling out waste of tree pulp after waste of tree pulp and flipping to a random page only to find it wholly uninteresting.
Ivan had watched him at first, but he had soon picked up one of the books Alfred had tossed irritably away and began reading, trusting Alfred enough to look through his precious information. Not that there was much. Just shit.
"You know," Ivan said, licking a finger, "I could suggest a book to you."
No, that wasn't what Alfred wanted. He didn't want a suggestion, he wanted a book to call to him like a beacon, something influential that would change his world view like people had experienced with the Bible, but less boring than the Bible, because Alfred had tried that one and found it both hard to read and also a waste of paper and honestly, did every single book Ivan own try to use the biggest word possible? Like look, here, extraordinary, couldn't they just use great?
Ivan proceeded to tell him about the merits of more precise words to communicate blah, blah, blah. Alfred watched Ivan's mouth move and watched his eyes continue to read as he lectured and the sound wasn't bad, soft. Alfred looked up at Ivan from his position on the floor, his feet under Ivan's bed, and thought about how few people had seen Ivan from this angle, looking up as Ivan read and talked, surrounded by books. And the sound really was quite lovely and Alfred just rested his head against Ivan's knee.
Alfred stared at the doorway, counting the shadows that walked by, counting his heart beat, dividing it by six, multiplied by twelve and a half and then subtracting by seven, fingers twitching, restarting when the shadows walked back in front of the door, boots heavy on the floor.
He had asked to go to the bathroom three times and it was only one in the morning, they were going to tell him to hold it if he didn't stop, they were going to call the nurses if he didn't stop—
"What are you thinking about?"
Alfred looked over to the other side of the room and found a companion in bed, sitting up, eyes bright in the gloom.
"I don't want to sleep." Alfred held up his hand and watched his hand trembled. "It feels like all I've been doing is sleeping and I don't want to do it anymore." Like a fog had settled over him, slowing his movements, the whole world banging on his front door and demanding his attention. And the world was so boring.
"It is boring," Ivan said softly, "isn't it?"
Alfred blinked up at him, suddenly unsure if he had spoken aloud or not. "Why are you here, Ivan?"
Ivan head turned away from the light of the hallway, and if there had been a window in this jailcell, Ivan would have been looking out it and considering the question. As it was, he looked at the cinderblock walls and took longer to respond. "Because I was ordered to be here."
This clicked into place in Alfred's mind. So that was why people were afraid of him, because he wasn't kept here against his will by the hospital, but by someone else, because he didn't take the same pills in the morning and his responses weren't the same in group. Because someone higher had looked at Ivan and decided to make him come here.
"And why are you here, Alfred?"
Why was Alfred here. It was all people seemed to be asking him these days, and Alfred watched the shadow walk across the door and counted his heartbeat and divided and multiplied and subtracted and almost forgot to respond to a question that had been haunting him the past few days. "I'm not like Feli."
"No. No, you are most certainly not like Feliciano. Which begs the question, doesn't it?"
"I think… I think Mattie put me here." Alfred picked at some weird, dry stuff on his hands, wondering where it had come from, why it was there, when things like this started to bug him when they so clearly hadn't before. Had they? "Do you think that medication works?"
"Flutix?"
What the fuck was Flutix? "No, the shit they give me. The same bullshit they give Feli. Do you think it works? Do you think it's working? Do you—"
"I certainly think it does something."
Ivan's figure swam in Alfred's vision and his eyes burned and his head was full of fuzz and he could feel the darkness pulling him down, pulling his eyelids down and his head started to dip even as he jerked up to try and stay awake and even as Ivan stood and walked over to him and it felt so good to slip into that blank space in his head and give in and Ivan looked down at him and
Alfred frowned. "Where did you get that?"
Feli looked up. "Hm?"
Alfred pointed at the brownie Feli was holding. "Where did you get that? I didn't get one, and everyone else only gets Jell-O here for dessert. How the fuck did you get a brownie, Feli?"
Feli looked at the brownie in his hand like he was surprised to see it there, the fucker. "Oh, um, I don't know. It was just on my food tray, and I just thought that I could eat it because it was there—"
"Why didn't anyone else get a brownie?" Alfred leaned over and snatched the paper slip that detailed Feli's food order, and yep, the slip had Feli's name on it, so he hadn't taken someone else's tray by accident. "What makes you so special that you get a good dessert?"
Feli was staring at him with wide eyes, frozen, scrambling for an excuse. "I—I don't know, I just eat what they—"
"No, that's bullshit. They have a locked room and you have to ride on an elevator to get up here, they don't make mistakes, there aren't any windows. You didn't just get a brownie by mistake. There's other shit, too, you get more bathroom breaks at night, and I bet you there's other shit I didn't notice, either."
"Alfred," Feli said, voice bordering on yelling, defensive, "I don't know why I got a brownie." His voice wavered and his eyes were glassy and Alfred wasn't buying that shit for a second. "But I'm sure if I just tell—"
"Alfred." Ivan's voice was like a fire extinguisher, cold and calm and dousing, a tone that could get in your lungs and seep into your bloodstream and calm anger. Alfred hadn't even heard him walk over, and he leaned backwards to look at him. "Could I talk to you for a moment?"
Alfred shoved himself away from the table, glaring at Feli as Ivan gently led him away by the small of the back to the corner of the room, where he stood, head tilted as Alfred explained that Feli was fucking shifty as fuck, the brownie was just the final straw, something was off and Alfred didn't know what but Feli definitely had connections, he had a key to this place, a key or could feed notes through the heating vents to the kitchen—
"Alfred, do you really think Feliciano could pull all that off?"
Alfred watched Feli stare at his brownie, eyes wet and breath hitching, the schizo.
"Right, see," Ivan murmured, "it doesn't make sense for Feliciano to be the one orchestrating any grand brownie heist, does it?"
No. No, Alfred supposed not. No, but he was caught up in something, something he had no idea about, right over his head, a mile high. It was just a matter of who, and of course the obvious answer were the people keeping Feli here, and by extension, the people keeping Alfred here, but why, and what did the brownie have to do with it?
Well, it was obviously a reward, even if poor, stupid Feli had no idea it was. But, if there was one thing Feli was, was talkative, he could talk about the color of the tiles or about flowers or other dumb shit, so he was a spy—
"Come on Alfred, you can do better than that." Ivan looked over his shoulder at Feli. "I do wonder the coincidence, though, don't you?"
Okay, start over, Feli wasn't a spy, he was just a bystander. And Feli wasn't going to put two and two together, obviously, so that just…
Alfred bounced on the balls of his feet. "It has to do with me, I bet you. I'm the only guy in this place who's going to notice something like that, the only one who can put this together. It was a message from…"
From someone, and Alfred felt his brow furrow as he dug for answers.
"Feliciano as a means of communication. Yes, Alfred, I like that. Good boy."
Alfred couldn't think. He could feel the thoughts scatter away from him like marbles, ones he was constantly tripping over himself trying to capture, marbles covered in butter. Other thoughts kept interrupting on everything, stupid thoughts that made him hesitate and worry about instead.
When the doctor asked about Matthew, Alfred found himself wondering about Matt, where he was, if he missed Alfred, what he was doing with all of Alfred's stuff, how Dad and Papa were, how Matthew was, if he was still mad at Alfred, and Alfred found himself unable to remember Matthew's number when he tried to call, which just sent his mind spiraling more because what if Matthew had died of carbon monoxide poisoning, it was Alfred who had always checked the alarms and changed the batteries, how the apartment was, how Matthew was paying rent without Alfred's contribution and on and on and on and if Matt was mad at Alfred.
When Feli started avoiding him for whatever reason, Alfred's mind got on about that. Why was Feli avoiding him? It hardly seemed fair and Alfred hadn't even done anything besides out the obvious, so now Alfred watched Feli eat alone like a loser and Feli avoided looking at him and he got quiet and it was just such bullshit that Alfred couldn't comprehend it.
And Ivan. Alfred found Ivan plaguing Alfred's train of thought like a bandit. He had been ordered to be here, what could that fascinating thing mean, and did it have to do with the books Ivan read. He had touched Alfred's elbow and his back and had called Alfred a good boy, and he was always there to suggest something that Alfred hadn't even considered, make Alfred's mind reel with the possibilities and he seemed to like doing it, and he caught Ivan looking at him, head tilted and Alfred needed to figure out who was trying to get a message to him.
During movie nights, Alfred pressed his knee against Ivan's and watched Ivan pretend to ignore him.
Alfred changed in front of Ivan after his showers, dripping wet and slick, humming like he wasn't aware he was doing it, and he reveled in the eyes Ivan had for him.
But.
He needed to get his mind back on topic. He couldn't think. And there was something up with the brownie—
"For the love of God, Alfred, stop with the brownie."
-and so Alfred had a plan. Alfred had big tonsils. When he was younger, he would stare at himself in the mirror, examining his eyes and his eyebrows and his hair and his teeth and the thing that dangled from the back of his throat and his tonsils. He had forced Mathew's mouth open (and nearly gotten a finger chomped off for his trouble) to compare, and Alfred's tonsils were much, much bigger.
"I hardly see what this has to do with the brownie, or more importantly, what this has to do with your special message." Ivan was pretending to read, like he did when Alfred told him his plans.
The next morning, waiting for his meds, Alfred pretended to swallow them as the nurse checked his cheeks and tongue and cheeks, but in reality they were resting on his tonsils. If he flexed his throat right, his tonsils stuck out, catching the pills like a net catching litter from his stream of thought.
Alfred waited for the nurse to move off, and then coughed up the pills into palm of his hand grinned at Ivan.
Ivan looked at the pills. "That was disgusting," he said mildly. "But clever."
"Of course it was clever. I'm clever. Now," Alfred said, flicking the pills through the heating vent, "I can think again."
"And what a delight that will be."
Alfred grinned.
Ordered to be here.
Alfred watched Ivan's sleeping form as the words ran over and over again in his head. Ordered to be here by who?
Someone stalked by the doorframe and Alfred watched them without his glasses on and in a half-haze of exhaustion and his mind couldn't connect the two pieces because that nurse was familiar, wasn't he, Alfred had seen him before, he knew it, he knew it.
It was like Alfred had downed energy drinks, he felt like he was on top of the world, a map spread before him and he could freely wander around it and no Feli, he wasn't hyper today, this was how he always was, it's just that Feli didn't notice things like Alfred did, not that it's a bad thing.
Well, Feli, it was simple really. Remember the brownie, it was apart of something bigger, something Feli hadn't realized before. It was a test, test for Alfred, to check how with it he was, if he was still trusting the pills they gave out—not that he wasn't taking them—but it had to do with the management. Did you ever notice how everything is locked around here, no, probably not, but the only way in and out: locked. The nurse's station: locked. Certain rooms, random rooms, one where Alfred had gotten his blood tested: locked. It didn't make sense because Alfred wasn't a threat to anyone.
It was the doctor. The head doctor, the one who ran everything—no, Feli, he isn't nice—well, if he was nice, that was just a ploy to get people to trust him. Clearly, he wasn't a good guy. That was the only thing that made sense to Alfred, that he was keeping people here against their will. People like Alfred, who shouldn't be here, and Ivan, who was ordered to be here, people like Feli who couldn't do much, even if he wanted to.
"Really?" Ivan asked. "Why would he want to keep people here?"
Well, that was simple, wasn't it? Doctors had egos, everyone knew that, almost as bad as ER nurses, and they liked to flex them. So when doctors like…
"Dr. Väinämöinen."
Right, yes, Dr. V, got some people who were misunderstood, it made him feel like he had a big dick to keep Alfred here, the fucker. But he wasn't completely evil, he just wanted to see if you were smarter than him, if you could solve his puzzles, catch his clues, he would let you go. Shit like the brownie.
"You are obsessed with this brownie."
It's all apart of the puzzle, Ivan.
And it made sense, too, that fucker was condescending as fuck, broke trust constantly, didn't give a fuck about doctor-patient confidentiality, flagrantly threw his weight around by ordering bullshit prescriptions, ignored complaints, and was generally just a giant cock.
There was something new in his box, something that shouldn't be there, something sharp. It was a box cutter, at the very bottom, hidden under a broken gyroscope and old thermometer, one Alfred had never seen before in his life, with a fresh, crisp blade, one that fit into his palm like it had been molded to.
There was something higher than the doctor, Ivan. The doctor must have a boss, right? Someone who looked into the workings of this whole fucking locked loop and laughed about it. This higher-someone knew about the doctor and knew about Alfred, had seen him in the ER, had picked him for this game. This higher-someone, that's who was—
"Alfred." Ivan's breath was hot against Alfred's neck and his toes were cold against Alfred's legs. "It's too late for this."
"But you believe me." Alfred rolled his head to look at Ivan, searching his face in the gloom. "This person, they're the one who ordered you to be here, right? You're a spy, you're someone who reports back to him, aren't you?" Alfred looked for a confirmation in a movement of Ivan's face.
Ivan reached a hand up and ran a finger along Alfred's jawline.
And there were two sections, one working for the doctor and one working for the higher person—
"The General?"
Yes, the General, some were working for him, some for the doctor, and the one working for the General, they were the one sending messages to Alfred, they were the ones who wanted to get him and Ivan out, Alfred had figured it out, didn't Ivan see, it was so simple, Alfred felt like an idiot for not seeing it soon—
"Do you know all those books I read, Alfred?"
Yes—
"I would burn all those books just to listen to you talk for ten minutes."
"Ten?"
Ivan let out a sigh and bit Alfred gently on the shoulder, then kissed him in the same spot, lightly, Alfred barely felt his lips there, light as a snowflake melting. "Five, even. But it is late, and the guards will change shifts soon."
Ivan stood and retreated to his bed and left Alfred aching after cold toes.
Alfred knew what he had to do.
"I want to talk," Alfred said.
The doctor looked at him with interest. "That's what I'm here for, after all."
No, Alfred was going to speak and the doctor was going to listen, and then he was going to decide. Alfred wasn't stupid, he had figured out what was going on around here. It hadn't been easy, but it made sense now, the pills, the wrongful imprisonment—
No, doctor, Alfred was going to speak first.
The wrongful imprisonment, the hints, the little things, the brownie, the gift someone had sent him, Mattie turning his back on Alfred, all these had melded into a perfect picture of what was going on around here.
And, Alfred spoke louder for the microphones no doubt planted around the room, he had figured out what the General was asking him to do. But Alfred was going to give the doctor a choice first, because Alfred was a good guy. Now, the good doctor could either let Alfred go and explain to Matthew that this whole thing was a mistake, could release Ivan and stop playing this demented game—let everyone go who didn't deserve to be here, or the doctor would see exactly what the General had planned for him.
No, answer the question first.
Answer the question.
Alright, fine, if that's how he wanted to do things. And so Alfred stood and showed him the gift the General had sent him.
The doctor stood immediately but his feet got caught up in the chair and he half fell on his desk, papers—Alfred's paper, papers that tracked his progress at the games and notes to the General—slid from the folder to the floor and Alfred had made it around the edge of the desk and the doctor was looking up at him with wide eyes and Alfred raised the gift and Alfred brought the gift down but the doctor had been raising his hands and Alfred's gift came down there instead of—instead of—
And now the doctor was bleeding and yelling and there was so much blood, dripping down his arms and off his elbows and falling to the ground and getting on those white notes and he shied away from Alfred and the doctor's feet finally came free of the chair and he slumped against the wall looking at his ruined palms and another fresh wave of blood seeped down his arms and Alfred suddenly didn't know what the General wanted now and he backed away and he looked around for the cameras and he told the doctor:
"I want to leave now."
The doctor nodded at him. "Alright, Alfred." His voice was small and scared but his face was composed even as he held his hands uselessly in front of him, and Alfred could see he had gotten him in between the thumb and the pointer finger and his thumb hung down at an odd angle that made Alfred's stomach turn.
And then a nurse burst into the room and Alfred was slammed into the ground and he was sorry, he didn't mean to, he got it wrong, he was sorry, he didn't want to hurt anyone he just wanted to go, please let him go home please please please

Can you give us some amusing or endearing Romano imagines?
This might not be exactly what you asked for, but I actually um, I wrote something for this
I hope that’s okay. I’m planning on posting head canons afterwards, as well, don’t worry.
-Danzare-
A year ago you wouldn’t believe that you’d be living in Italy as a roommate for two hot Italian brothers. It sounded like paradise. You were just coming as a tourist, after all. But, here you were a year later, that you were in fact living that life and it was, in fact, paradise. A year ago it was just after Valentine’s Day, and you caught your last boyfriend cheating, so you took all the money you had and went to Italy without thinking. It was a stupid idea, but you ended up not regretting it, as you had met the cheerful Feliciano and the equally sweet but, aa you’ve come to know him, grumpier Lovino Vargas. You had become immediate friends after they showed you around, and when you admitted you had here to stay, they let you stay with them for a little while. Of course you were hesitant at first, but considering you had nothing to lose, you stayed with them.
That little while ended up being almost a year now. Tomorow is the anniversary of the day you arrived in Italy; the day you met Feli and Lovi. You couldn’t wait to spend the day with the two. Maybe they would try to teach you some Italian! Maybe they’d take you to the Colosseum like the first day you met! But that was tomorow. Today was a different day.
Valentine’s Day.
You’ve hated Valentine’s Day as a child. The thought of lovey dovey stuff used to make you groan in annoyance. Until your first years of highschool, the year you got your first boyfriend. Of course, it didn’t last. But since that  boy, you’ve been a hopeless romantic. You craved the cheesy cuteness. And in your senior year of highschool, you got a boyfriend who lasted longer than a few months. Two years actually. So on that Valentine’s Day, when you saw him with another woman, it broke your heart. In a angry rush, you took the little money you had and fled to Italy. When you arrived there, you were confused and suddenly realized what you’d done.
“Why am I here again…?” You had asked yourself. You wandered around for a bit before realizing you were hungry. You attempted to buy some gelato, but lucky you… you didn’t know any Italian and the man you were asking didn’t seem to know English. At least, not enough to hold up a conversation. You were struggling to talk to him when you heard a voice pitch in behind you.
“Do you need help, bella?” Hearing English, you turned around hopefully, and a nicely tanned,  brunette man with an odd curl in his hair was smiling at you.
“Ye- ah… sì!” You corrected yourself. And smiled at him thankfully. He ordered the flavor of gelato you wanted while you watched him sheepishly with a blush on your face. When he handed it to you and offered you a seat at a small outdoor-cafe-style table, you were quick to thank him. “Thank you so much. I don’t really know Italian that well and…” after you said that sentence, you mentally face palmed. Of course he knows that! Idiot!  Thankfully, another man ran up to the two of you, saving your embarrassment.
“Fratello! Lovi!” The other man, who had slightly redder hair but a matching curl, started speaking rapidly in Italian while the man who helped you seemed frustrated by him.
“Feli, can’t you see I’m trying to help someone!”
That was your first time meeting the Vargas brothers. Exactly 364 days ago. You had grown to love them, although one you loved as a best friend, the other… well, you had a crush on Lovino. He was just so perfect. From his personality to his looks. He was so kind and sweet to women, tourists and such, but you found he was a little more grumpy when you got to know him. It was cute. God, his appearance. You weren’t someone who cares about apperance above all, but damn, he was nice. It must have been that Southern Italian blood that made him so gorgeous. Tan skin, brown hair and those hazel eyes. And who could forget that accent. So maybe You had more than a crush on him. Maybe you were in love with every little bit of him.
Since it was Valentine’s Day, Lovino was out dropping Feli off at his boyfriend Ludwig’s house. While he was gone, you decided that you would make some food for later. It wouldn’t be seen as romantic, would it? I mean, you’re not together, so…
As you were grabbing the ingredients to make a pizza, you decided it was to quiet in the house, so you ran to get your phone. Flipping through some music, you found an Italian song that you listened to so long ago. You danced through the kitchen, swaying your hips to the beat, mumbling along as well as you could, considering you still couldn’t speak Italian that well. You listened to the song on repeat, over and over, until you could sing some of the chorus correctly, and began trying to sing along louder.
Danzare, amore mio a ballaredanzare, amore mio a cantaredanzare, danzareio voglio stare qui con te
Danzare, amore mio a ballaredanzare, amore mio a cantaredanzare, danzarefantastica sei tu per me
As you were preparing to put the pizza together, you heard a small chuckle, and looked behind you to see Lovino giving you an amused grin. It wasn’t often you saw him smile this brightly, him being the grumpy Italian he was, and you loved how it looked on him. Sadly you were too embarrassed to smile back. You simply stood there while the song played in the background.
Quickly, you scrambled to turn it off, and ended up tripping in the process, landing gently in Lovino’s arms. Your blush worsened, and you noticed his cheeks also had a bit of color in them.
“Bella…” Lovino started softly, that smirk never leaving his lips. “I didn’t know you could sing like that. And in Italian.”
“How long where you standing there?” You asked, embarrassed that he heard you probably butcher his language horribly, and you moved away from his arms.
“I listened to the whole song.” He shrugged. “È stato molto bello. I like hearing you speak my language. You’re cute when you do. But, do you know what it translates to?” You shook your head.
“Something about… dancing? I think.” Lovino nodded and let another small smirk grace his lips. “I have a game for us to play. Like a Valentine’s Day celebration. Come here.” He led you to the couch and you sat on the soft cushions next to him, forgetting about the pizza you were going to make.
“Okay. Now what’s the game?” You asked in a worriful tone. “I dont need to say anything in Italian, do I?” Lovino looked almost offended.
“Of course you’re going to! I’m not going to kill you if you say something wrong, idiota!” he scoffed, his usual attitude coming back. “You’re just going to say the line and I’ll translate it for you. And then at the end, you’ll get a prize.” He paused for a moment and then continued. “You’ve been listening to it on repeat. You should have the lyrics memorized.” He scoffed once again.
“O-okay. Um,” you closed your eyes to remember the words, before muttering a soft time. “Sì sei speciale… io voglio restare, con… te ballare.”
“Dio mio, you are so cute speaking Italian.”
“Lovi,  just translate it,  please!” You blushed, and Lovino let out an exasperated sigh, before looking into your eyes.
“You are special, I want to stay, dancing with you.” Lovino translated. “Next line.”
“Tu sei importante… something…  la mia stella…. ummm, tu sei la donna… che vorrei con me.” You finished with a smile, confident in yourself.
“You didn’t roll your ‘r’s.” The Italian  groaned in disappointment.
“Lovi! You said you wouldn’t criticize me!”
“No, no, no. I said I wouldn’t kill you. I didn’t, did I? And don’t call me Lovi.” He paused for a moment, moving closer to you and looking into your eyes softly, softer than you’ve ever seen Lovino look. “You are important, my star. You’re the woman I want with me.” You turned bright red when he said that, but shook it off. Get yourself together!
“Io voglio… stare qui… con te?” You asked, remembering that part of the song.
“I want to be here… with you.” Lovino leaned forward and slipped his hand into your cheek. “______… ti amo tanto…” without a warning, you felt his lips press to yours and your eyes widened dramatically. Wow. Not wanting to miss your chance, you kissed back slowly as Lovino urged the kiss on, soon giving your lips a soft nibble and gently nudging past with his tongue, trying not to scare you away or go to far. You pulled away quickly and looked off to the side, blushing harder than you thought you could. “Damn it, damn it, damn it!” Lovino cursed softly. “Mi dispiace, ______.”
“What? Lovi, I loved it. Just… was all that true?”
“Sì. But not even that whole song can describe how much i love you.” You blushed even more, and smiled at him.
“Ti amo, Lovi.” You pressed another kiss against his lips, and when you pulled away, Lovino stood up from the couch.
“How about we get some gelato, ______? Like the first day we met.” You nodded enthusiastically.
“I’d love that.” He took your hand and gave you another heartwarming smile, a rare one that forced a smile out of you as well.
“Andiamo.”
This is actually from my Quotev account. Woop. How is it?

Dreadneldritch
No pets were allowed on campus.
The freshman orientation guide was very, Very clear about this point. Absolutely, positively, no pets allowed. (minor exceptions to be made for service animals.) And yet here she was, 3 weeks into her first semester, sitting on the ground, staring at a cat. It was staring back.
Dread had always been fond of animals. She had never been allowed to have any pets, (her father was allergic to most things with fur, and her mother just hated animals) but she had always wanted a cat. Multiple cats, preferably. And now she was sitting on the steps of her dorm, in a college where No Pets Were Allowed, staring at the most precious little ball of fur she had ever set eyes on. She knew far too well about the other rules (she was on her second roommate, now, and the delicate horns curling from the thing-that-was-not-her-first-roommate’s face had left an… impression.) She was very good about remembering iron, salt, and not to say please or thank you. But this was a very cute cat, and she was willing to risk a little bit.
It meowed. She held out a hand, and it walked right up to her, and “oh my goodness you are just the cutest thing!” she squeaked. The cat seemed satisfied.
She was, to say the least, conflicted. The rules were very clear, and the rules were generally right, but this was a very small cat, and she did not have very many friends, and really, she already knew what she would do. “C’mere, you.” She scooped up the cat and it snuggled into her jacket. “I’m going to name you Eldritch.”
—-
It was about three weeks later that things got… actively weird. She had managed to smuggle in, via the Walmart (which had no employees that day, she left the money on the counter and hoped that nothing Else would take it) a litter box and cat food. Eldritch seemed to settle in fine, and she traded her roommate 3 dollars and a cool rock in return for not telling anyone about the very, very illegal pet currently snoozing on her lap. The roommate, whose name was Chalkboard, seemed to like the cat. Chalkboard even gave the cat a cat-toy. When Chalkboard vanished (decided to take the “fake your death to avoid breaking up with your s.o” advice a little too much to heart), Not-Chalkboard did Not like the cat. Dread caught Not-Chalkboard making what looked like a very rude hand gesture at the cat on multiple occasions, although it’s hands were strange and it was hard to be sure. It was when Not-Chalkboard, after having a Very Intense staring contest with the cat for about 6 minutes, saw the error of its ways and vanished, leaving Chalkboard in its place, that Dread began to think something might be up. Eldritch said nothing, as cats are wont to do, but it purred a great deal when Chalkboard let it sit on her lap while she was doing her homework. This was, to say the least, Rather Suspect. Nothing more was said about it.
—-
Eldritch enjoyed going to classes with Dread, which was definitely for the best. She was distinctly Uncomfortable with the idea of leaving the cat alone in the dorm, even with the excessive amount of salt on everything that could possibly be considered an entrance. So Eldritch came to classes, and sat on her lap, or in her bag, and very pointedly ignored other student’s attempts to say “Hey dude what the fuck is that cat doing here”. Dread generally did the same. Some of the other freshmen liked the cat, but typically upperclassmen or even sophomores avoided them both. Too many of them had heard of Bad Things happening to those who neglected to give the campus cats a wide berth. Dread felt like that type of thing happened to other people. And besides, Eldritch hadn’t tried to consume her soul or remove her eyes from her body even once, so.
—-
Their favorite spot to study (or rather, Dread’s favorite spot, because Eldritch did absolutely no studying) was another iffy decision. She had learned very early in this situation that Eldritch was one thing, and the Crows were another, and the two Should Not Meet. So they stuck to areas the crows did not like, and made sure there was a nice grassy place, and occasionally fended off the Gentry via passive aggressiveness and vague grunts. She once traded a lock of her hair for a new container of 0.7 mm pencil lead, but that was about it. Still, she and the cat became something of a fixture in that area, because Eldritch marked her as something Other, and her habits made her leave shadows of herself wherever she liked to be. Other students would occasionally sit down across from her at the picnic table, and cautiously ask for a deal, and she would always laugh and say “I’m just human. I can probably help you study-” or talk to that girl, or whatever mundane thing. She would just wave off the Other requests, and give them a rock and a smiled “freely given”. Nobody ever mentioned the cat when they went over there. If they happened to see something else when looking through their glasses, or when furtively glancing through rings, they certainly didn’t mention anything to Dread.
They probably assumed she already knew.
—-
By junior year, Dread and Eldritch had, to the minds of other students, stopped being two separate entities. They were Dread-and-Eldritch, and could be found at the 5th picnic table in the Place Where Crows Are Not, and they were always happy to help with anything you needed, given that it was not one of Those things. Dread was happy to have people pay attention to her. Eldritch let on nothing, but seemed pleased. Nobody ever mentioned what Eldritch looked like when you Saw it. If some misguided freshman decided to try to ask, they were always prevented from getting there. Dread-and-Eldritch were doing just fine without that knowledge, thank you, and would continue to do so for a while. Occasionally, people asked Dread what she was planning on doing after college. She would always shrug, and say something like “I haven’t thought that far yet,” and change the subject. Eldritch kept its silence.
Really, though, she already knew what she would be doing, and it did not involve going away from campus for very long. Eldritch knew this, too. It had marked her as its own, all those years ago. All that was left was to seal it.
—-
When Dread graduated, she was a very different person from the friendless teen who had been staring at a cat on the steps of her dorm all those years ago. Powerful was… not the right word. But she was different. She had certainly prevented many people from doing things that they would almost certainly regret later, albeit passively. Eldritch sat on her chair when she walked across the stage, and when she went to get the rest of her things, Eldritch led her back to the picnic table in the Place Where The Crows Are Not, and made its first deal in over four years.
“You have been a good friend to many, and you have served me well during this time,” Eldritch purred, sounding so much like the same cat it had been for years. “We have helped countless others, in ways that I cannot alone, and with something that you have that I do not. I would like to cement this.”  Dread nodded.
“I- yes. Okay. Deal.” Eldritch grinned in a way that would have been unsettling to anyone other than Dread, who was no longer truly human in the same way that Eldritch was no longer truly Fae. Exposure and belief were More here, and after four years of close contact with each other and doing the work of a faerie that wants to help people Without ruining their lives, it would be almost impossible to avoid any lasting effects.
Anyone who had been present for this transaction, if they had eyes and a mouth and an ability to think, would have described it as a sudden bright light from the two of them, and a feeling of Weird. At this point, anyone with these prerequisites also likely would have fled, so the end of that is not known. But it is known that when Dread Felis applied to the position of “Counselor”, and her application would not leave and she also would not leave, the staff had very few choices but to hire her. The cat-that-was-not-a-cat sitting on her shoulders, with one amber eye that seemed normal and one blue eye that was all too human, and Dread’s eyes, the mirror image of the cat’s, also helped them make that decision. Her office is always open, and if you see Eldritch around (they spend time away from each other, now that they can see through each other’s eyes) it’s sometimes a sign that you should go talk to her. She won’t bite! And even if she can’t help you, or what you need help with is something that they Don’t Do, you’ll always get a someone to listen to your problem, a cool rock, and a smiled “freely given!” from a face with one cat eye and two people behind it. —————— (This concept has honestly been such an inspiration and I really wanted to write something for it, and the idea of one of the Gentry legitimately wanting to help but not being able to by nature latching on to a student and both of them becoming something Else seemed like a good idea! I hope it’s canon compatible! I know nothing about colleges)

Chapter 18: Siblings and Domestic Fluff AF
I AM SO SORRY THIS TOOK SO LONG. I HAD SO MUCH STUFF BUILT UP AND THEN I WAS GOING THROUGH SOMETHING... BUT I PROMISE THAT THIS IS ACTUALLY SLIGHTLY MORE WELL WRITTEN THAN THE LAST CHAPTER OF CRAP! I HOPE U LIKE IT!
New Years was approaching faster than anyone realized. Christmas was great but since everyone was always broke because of school and stuff the only gifts that were exchanged were the ones that were organized via secret santa. Of course there were a few exceptions, close friends and couples exchanged in addition to the secret santa.
New Years was exciting because they had the whole week from Christmas until the seventh of January to do whatever they wanted. And most people chose to go home since the break was so lengthy and the campus would be completely empty otherwise.
With two days left before New Year's Eve, students all over the campus were packing a small  bag to get ready for the new year. Arthur peaked under his bed, looking for a novel that he had borrowed from his mother months ago, “Lukas! Have you seen my copy of pride and prejudice?”
“Have you looked in your desk?” Lukas neatly folded a blue shirt before placing it in his bursting case, “When was the last time you even touched that thing?”
“Ah ha! Here it is,” Arthur held the book up triumphantly, “how did it get wedged between the mattresses?”
“It wasn't me,” Lukas struggled to close his suitcase, “When did they say buses were leaving?”
“Um,” the other blond pondered for a moment, “I think Mrs. Calliandra said three.”
“Yeah three o'clock sharp as the bitch put it,” a voice walked in and plopped on the bottom bunk face down, “I can't believe you losers are actually going home.”
“You've been showing up here lately,” Lukas rolled his eyes and picked up the shirt that Lovino has knocked off the bed, “why?”
“Why? Cause we're friends.” Lovino pretended to be offended by the question, “Don't friends hang out in each other's dorms?”
“We're about to leave though,” Arthur remarked, shoulders deep in the closet, “Alfred, Matthew and I are leaving at three thirty in order to make it for an early dinner.”
“You guys live like, fifteen minutes away from here. Why are you guys going to fucking early?” Lovino mumbled, his head still buried in the plush comforter.
Arthur zipped up his final bag, “Because our parents want to see us before they head out to go to Hawaii together. Alfred and Matthew should be back sometime later today, but I'm staying to watch Peter.”
“None of your brothers are coming back?” Lukas quirked an eyebrow, “Don't they usually?”
Arthur sighed, “the twins are out with college friends and Dylan can't cause a plane ride home from Cambridge would be to costly. And Allistor is spending it with his fiancé’s family, they actually might drop by but not for long.”
“I'm trapped here all break,” Lovino complained, “What about you?”
Lukas picked up his suitcase and raised the rolling handle, “I'm catching the bus back home with Matthias, Tino, and Berwald.”
“Oh, Emil must be happy that you're visiting,” Arthur smiled, finally being able to plop down next to Lovino, “does he know?”
“Yeah,” Lukas rolled his eyes, “He's so happy. The grumpy little fourth grader thinks I'll embarrass him in front of some friend he's bringing with him.”
“Oh?” Lovino peaked his head up.
Lukas started to roll his bag towards the door, the wheels making a weird noise as they dragged across the floor. They could hear his voice that was damped by distance, “He called me yesterday to beg me not to come back. Said he was bringing someone important to stay over and that i would be the death of him, I have to go. Bye.”
The door shut and Lovino turned to Arthur, “so dinner?”
“Yeah,” Arthur waved his hand, “Were going out somewhere since we’re all family friends. You're really not going to head home?”
Lovino clicked his tongue, “Sit on a train for a day and a half? That's way to fucking long. Plus my grandpa is away and Sebastian wanted to come see us at the castle or so he calls it.”
“Sebastian is your youngest brother right?” Arthur feigned any real interest. It wasn’t as if he wasn’t absolutely invested in Lovino’s story… okay it was that. But to be fair, Lovino looked bored by his own words.
Lovino nodded, “Yeah. He’s as old as Emil and he wants to come here when he’s older. He’s ridiculous, thinking that far ahead. The brat is bound to get homesick if he comes here.”
Arthur was about to reply that little Peter was only about two years younger than Sebastian and he was already talking about wanting to go to the magical looking high school. His younger brother would constantly grate on him, telling him that he would easily get into the private school if Arthur had been able to. But he was never able to express his annoyance because there was a heavy knock on the door, “Arthur! Are you ready? Mattie’s got our stuff in the car and we need your bag!”
Lovino smirked, “Go on princess. Your knight is waiting.”
“Very funny Lovino,” Arthur deadpanned, “I hope you enjoy your break in this solitude.”
Arthur left Lovino on his bed, closing the front door with a slam.

“Ah! I am so excited to see my family again!” Tino chirped in front of Lukas, “Were supposed to be eating a special dinner tonight, aren’t you excited?”
Berwald had a small smile on his face, wrapping an arm around the fin. Though his good mood was interrupted as Matthias reached over the bus chair and clapped on him on the shoulder, “Ya excited to tell your parents? Tino, what was your dad’s dating policy again?”
“Hehe…” Tino’s expression seemed to dim a bit and he turned to pat his boyfriend on the shoulder, “Good luck sweetie.”
Matthias let out a howl, “You’re gonna need it Ber!”
Lukas tsked, turning back to his book. Tino’s dad wasn't very fond of Berwald. Never was from the very beginning. Fathers intuition? Call it what you will, but no matter how pleasing or kind Berwald was to the guy, all he received in return were pointed glares.
“Don't worry,” Matthias laughed again, “You can come over to my house if it gets to be too much.”
Since Berwalds family had moved closer to the high school when Berwald was older, the swede would have to stay with one of them if he were to go back to his home town. Which was ideal since he wanted to spend a lot of time with Tino, but scary considering the boy's father was an ever looming presence. Lukas let out a huff, mumbling under his breath, “In Laws can be scary.”
To which all three of them caught, and only Matthias found terribly hilarious. Tino smiled, wishing it weren't true while Berwald seemed to sink just a little bit farther into his seat.
The rest of the three hour bus ride wasn't very exciting. They eventually ran out of ways to poke fun at Berwalds obvious issue with Tino’s dad and settled into sleeping.
Matthias stretched his arms out moments before they had to get off the bus, nearly hitting Lukas who was peacefully sleeping beside him. He had a strange crick in his neck and his legs were numb from not standing for a while, but he didn't seem to mind as he looked over at his companion.
Lukas looked smaller when he slept. Not younger though, like everyone often said, just tinier. His breathing pattern was soft and steady, his hair falling over his face and framing his naturally rosy cheeks. Lukas wasn't analyzing everything when he slept, he wasn't constantly on guard. He looked content and Matthias just couldn't find it in him to wake the guy. He chose to stare a bit longer, deciding to wait until the last possible moment.
“You should take a picture,” Tino turned around in his seat, “it’ll last longer.”
Matthias just smiled, “no picture could ever capture something as beautiful as this.”
________________
Lovino ended up taking a nap in Arthur's bed before he left the room. By the time he finally awoke he had a few missed calls from Feli and a stream of worried texts. Kicking himself off the bed, Lovino went to go find his brother before he worked himself into a panic and called the police. Feliciano was a handful sometimes, meant well, but was a handful. He was slightly glad that the worrisome guy would be out with Ludwig, and the german’s brother and boyfriend for New Year's day. Now the only ones he had to worry about were his pesky roommate and youngest brother. At least he had two days to come up with a game plan.
When he opened the door to his dorm, he wasn't expecting to see his other brother. Sebastian was fiddling on his phone not even bothering to look up when he heard the door open, “Gramps dropped me off and I think Feli is gathering a search party for you. I dunno why though, there’s no one here. Its lame.”
“You’re in fourth grade, go outside and kick a ball or something,” Lovino deadpanned, “Why did grandpa drop you off so early?”
“Because I was buggin him or something like that!” The boy giggles and puts his phone down, “Long time no see Lovi!”
“I can’t possibly see why he would think that you were annoying,” Lovino mumbled, “And don’t call me that Sebastian.”
“Awe, I know, I know,” Sebastian laughed as he attempted to throw an arm around his brothers shoulders, giving him a wink, “It’s a special name reserved for your boyfriend .”
Lovino sneered as he watched the nine year old collapse into a fit of giggles, “Shut up you fucking brat! You know thats not whats going on.”
“Lovino’s gotta boyfriend! Lovino’s got a boyfriend!” Sebastian sung as he continued to roll around on the plush bed, “Haha! You’re all red!”
Lovino was about to pounce on the guy before he heard the door open and a panicked voice call out, “Lovi! Are you here? Feliciano called and said that you were missing!”
“Well well, look what the cat dragged in, perfect timing,” Sebastian said low enough for just Lovino to hear before cupping his hands around his mouth, “Yeah he’s in here!”
Antonio beamed as he walked in and Lovino sighed. The spaniard seemed to notice the younger italian and smiled, “Sebastian! I didn’t know you were supposed to be coming, I would have gone out to find our monopoly game.”
In the past, whenever Sebastian would visit, Antonio would go and find his old monopoly game that he brought from his home. It wasn’t often that the young boy would visit, but the two of them would often spend hours playing while Lovino caught up with his grandfather. Sebastian secretly reveled in time he got to spend with his brother’s roommate. Hanging out with his brothers was fun, sure. But neither of them liked to do things that Sebastian liked to do. Antonio would take him outside to play catch, or soccer, which his brothers did indulge him in once in awhile. The two Vargas twins were on the soccer team. But most of the time they were too preoccupied with their grandfather to want to play outside. And the both of them didn’t know how to play baseball that well.
Sebastian supposed that Antonio didn’t really know how to play the game much farther than being able to catch and throw. The spaniard mentioned something about a friend named Alfred teaching a whole bunch of them in a short amount of time. Sebastian really liked the sport and played it for their town.
But other than playing sports outside with Antonio, Sebastian liked playing board games with him. When he was really young and visited when his older brothers were only freshmen, Sebastian knew that Antonio would let him cheat. Whether they were playing cards or chutes and ladders, Antonio always let him win. It was a nice gesture that he appreciated, yet when he was around seven he asked him to stop.
Sebastian remembered the face that Antonio made, like a dad finding out that his child knew all along that he was really the one putting money under his pillow when the tooth fairy visited. He let out a flustered laugh and just said, “You caught me!”
“Lovino didn’t tell you that I was coming?” Sebastian pouted, “Why didn’t you tell Toni, Lovino?”
Lovino sighed at the boys whining, “I’m a busy person Sebastian. It slipped my mind okay? I'm sorry.”
“You’re saying sorry?” Sebastian looked shocked, “Who are you and what have you done with my brother?”
“I’m allowed to say sorry once and awhile brat.” Lovino crossed his arms as his roommate let out another laugh.
“I’m going to go call Feliciano so he can stop freaking out,” Antonio wandered outside, “Sebastian, I’ll go find the game too!”
Lovino groaned as he watched his brother cheer and call out, “Wait for me! I wanna go too!”
____________________________
Dinner with their parents hadn't been all that exciting. It was actually more like a late lunch than anything, meaning that they were all hungry again by six o'clock. Alfred had imagined it to be a little worse than it was. His parents were open minded, so we're Arthur's, so it didn't bother them when Alfred fake gushed for his brother about Gil, cooing, “They're so cute all the time. Gil's real sweet to him, I approve.”
His little comment raised a few eyebrows. Both families knew Gilbert, it was hard to miss the kid when Alfred and him hung out almost everyday during freshman year, back when the boys were too frequently homesick to stay in the dorms. Alfred knew that his parents liked Gilbert too, he was always polite even though his shouting was a bit much at times. Matthew had just shrunk lower into his seat, both him and Arthur kicking Alfred in the shin under the table as punishment. When Alfred lurched forward with a yelp of pain, His brother smiled, “Gilbert is great though.”
“So, why didn't you bring ‘em here!” His father had laughed. The rest of dinner had been boring. It was the usual catch up chatter that occurred between people who haven't talked in awhile. It had gone smoothly without a single hitch. Which was the weird part.
Arthur knew it was too good to be true, his parents whispering to him as they hugged goodbye, getting ready to drive off to the airport, “So love, how are you doing? You'll be okay?”
He nodded, “I'll be fine. Peter probably won't cause that much trouble while you're away.”
His mother nodded and laughed, “Mm, and those two are staying to help you?”
“Ah. No I think they're going back to the academy.” Arthur didn't like the look his mother gave him when she sighed, looking years younger than she actually was and just as mischievous.
“My poor baby, won't be with his beloved boyfriend for New Year's?” She laughed as Arthur squeaked in protest, “It's okay darling, there are many couples who have to separate for holidays right?”
“I'm not dating anyone mother,” the blush crept up Arthur's neck as he clenched his fists, “you know that.”
Letting out a wistful sigh, Arthur's mother kissed him on the cheek, “Let a women dream Arthur. You and I aren't getting any younger and your brothers…”
“What? But, Allistor and his fiancé, not to mention Dylan is dating that fellow. The twins are both older too, and Peter is well...” Arthur scrambled, “Why? What's wrong with them?”
“Ah nothing,” Arthur watched as his mother's shoulders drooped, “I would just love an in law as sweet as Alfred.”
“Mum!” Arthur let out an irritated huff.
The Brit started to pinch at the bridge of his nose as his mother laughed, “I'm sorry sweetie, he's just so cute though. Watching you two grow up, ah my heart! Fiona is nice, but you know she's just not my type of person.”
“Vile and soul sucking? With a personality like that I can't possibly come up with a reason for you not to like my dear brothers fiancé.” Arthur rolled his eyes.
His mom sighed, “I just want what's best for you honey. Oh! I also promised to pass this along.”
His mother poked around her bag before producing a tiny slip of crumpled paper. Arthur took it from his mother, unfolding it, “A number?”
“A friend at bridge has a son who saw your picture-”
“You said you'd stop showing that around!”
“-and he said you were cute. Just think about it, I worry about you Arthur.”
“Moments ago you were gushing about Alfred and now you're handing me the number of a stranger.” Arthur grumbled, stuffing the paper into his pocket, “I don't understand you sometimes.”
His mom laughed as she pulled him into a hug, “call and invite the guy over one of these days! New Years is only two days away and don't you want to have someone with you when the clock strikes midnight? I love you sweetie, we'll be back next week.”
“I love you too,” Arthur hugged her back. He understood her worry for him. Honestly he did. When his brothers were his age they had already gone through a few boyfriends or girlfriends. They had always asked to either go somewhere or bring someone back home for the holidays, so Arthur's mom was a little worried when he hadn't turned out anything like them.
Even Peter claims to have a girlfriend, and he was in third grade. Weren't cooties still supposed to be a thing for kids that age?
Arthur watched as his mother and father pulled away with the mr and Mrs. William-Jones, the car bound for the airport.
Waving excitedly, Peter turned to run into the house, “Are all of you coming?”

“Emil!” Matthias yelled as he walked through the door of the Bondevik-Steilsson household, placing the hide-away key on the front table to be put back later, “Buddy?”
There was a thumping noise coming from the general direction of the stairs, “Matthias?”
“Hey!” Matthias was taking off his shoes when the little boy jumped up and wrapped his arms around his legs, “How are you doing?”
“I’m okay…” The boy backed off, a little shyer now, “Why are you here?”
Matthias laughed, “My parents said they were going out of town for a while, so I’ll be in and out of here for a few days, is that okay?”
The dane only lived a block or two away, so he was able to travel between the two houses easily. His parents also decided to go on vacation, and not tell him. Instead they left a note on the kitchen counter and a bottle of champagne for him in the fridge. Matthias loved his parents, but sometimes he wished they were a little more… parent like.
“Yeah.” Emil gave him a small smile, his eyes wide and curious.
Matthias ruffled his hair, “Where’s your brother?”
Emil turned wordlessly and ran through the house, Matthias trailing slowly behind him. Emil had ran into the kitchen, gaining his brothers attention.
“Emil? Where’s your friend?” Lukas who was cutting something up, turned around with the knife in his hand.
The knife didn’t change the fact that Lukas was absolutely adorable. The blue and brown striped apron was hanging on his frame and his hair was pinned back with a few extra clips, fuzzy and fluffy socks on his feet. A loose shirt and sweatpants hanging on his smaller frame. He looked a little surprised to see Matthias there instead of whoever Emil had over.
“Matthias?” Lukas raised an eyebrow, placing the knife down and abandoning the pepper he was cutting.
Emil rolled his eyes and pattered back up the stairs, probably back to his room where his friend still was. Matthias scratched the back of his neck, “What are you cooking? It smells good.”
“Its stew, and what are you doing here?” Lukas walked over to the stove and picked up the spoon, stirring whatever was in the pot.
“My parents went on a trip or something… left me a note. So I figured that i’d come see my best friend in the whole world!” Matthias walked up beside him, “Where are your parents?”
“Mor’s went shopping for the New Year’s party they’re going to, and mom’s still at work. She and mor are having a date night since I'm here to watch Emil, they probably won't be back until morning.” Lukas filled a spoon with the reddish looking food, placing the end on his lips own lips. After nodding to himself, Lukas held out the utensil, “Try this?”
It was more like a command than a question, but Matthias would have tried it anyways. He smiled as his mouth filled with the warm liquid and sighed in contentment. As always, Lukas was amazing at cooking. Matthias gushed, “it's really good, what's in it?”
“See I told you.” Emil’s voice cut Lukas’ Possible answer off, “Gross right? Sometimes they’re worse than my parents.”
Matthias and Lukas both turned to the two little boys now sitting at the island in the middle of the kitchen. Emil was smirking while the boy beside him smiled politely. Lukas just rolled his eyes and went back to cooking, but Matthias placed both hands down on the counter, “And who are you?”
“My name is Leon, nice to meet you sir,” the boy said with confidence.
Emil shook his head mumbling something along the lines of, “kiss up.”
“Mmhm. And Leon,” the Dane walked around to throw an arm around the tiny Asian boy, and there was some bite in his tone, “What are your intentions with my little Emil over here.”
“Matthias!” Both brothers snapped imminently. Lukas had whipped around with the spoon, nearly splattering food everywhere with a murderous look and Emil looked up at him with the biggest pout he'd ever seen. Leon seemed to be the only confused one.
Emil was sat mortified, maybe it wasn't his brother that he had to worry about being embarrassing. Sure his brother would probably try to pull out the photo albums, maybe send some glares that Leon would be oblivious to. But he never anticipated for Matthias to pull the whole overprotective, ‘daddy's little girl’ act.
Emil wasn't even a girl! He was a man. A manly man that could take care of himself. Elizabeta had taught him all he knows.
“Matthias, Emil is in fourth grade!” Lukas scolded him, he placed the spoon down on a napkin and shook his head, “They’re kids. And just friends for that matter.”
“You’re not freaking out about this? Lukas, this is Emil we’re talking about…” Matthias was shocked that the norwegian wasn’t fretting over his brother, tilting his head, he added, “I knew who I was going to be in love with forever when I was around that age. Why shouldn't I be suspicious?”
Lukas turned red and Emil started to snicker, “You two are ridiculous, C’mon Leon, I can still build a better Lego dragon than you!”
The two ran up the stairs, their playful bantering fading away as  the thumping grew louder. Emil’s door slammed with a bang.
______________________________
After a while of playing board games the three boys decided to call it a night. They had to be wide awake to stay up the next day, since it was New Years. Well they had to be able to stay up until midnight which wasn't too late. Well. For the older boys anyways.
Sebastian had thrown all the pillows and blankets onto the floor so all three of them could be together. Of course those weren’t enough though, so Antonio had to go and nab pillows from Francis’ room.
He may or may not have broken a thing or two in the process.Francis wouldn't miss that lamp right?
When Sebastian snuggled in underneath the pile of blankets in their little nest, Antonio wasted no time following. Lovino sneered at the two, shaking his head, “You two are stupid.”
“Aw come on Lovi! Join us!” Antonio wrapped his arms around Lovino's waist, dragging him down as the boy protested, “We can read that story book that we always do!”
“Ah! I have it right here!” Sebastian pulled it out from underneath his pillow, “We can all read it together this time.”
Lovino stopped fussing and slid into the spot to the left of Sebastian, peering at the beaten up cover. It was one of Lovino and Feliciano’s old picture books, the spine was worse for ware and there was some water damage on some of the pages. But the story was one that they had enjoyed, no matter how old they got.
Sebastian particularly liked it when Antonio would read though. Lovino would sometimes come back to the dorm room early enough from late night talks with his grandfather to catch the last few bits of the story that Antonio could get to before Sebastian was knocked out. It was sweet, the only source light coming from Sebastian's night light. He could hear his brother giggle happily as Antonio used a funny sounding voice for a character. Lovino would always wait until the boy was asleep though to sneak in and go to bed, not wanting to break the magic that the two had created.
So this is to say that this would be the first time that he was experiencing the story up close and personal. Like. Really though dude. He had so many opportunities to but he was more of a chicken than he let on.
Antonio settled in on the other side of Sebastian, watching as the boys little hand flipped the page. He grinned brightly as Sebastian looked up eagerly at him, looking much younger than he actually was.
“Once upon a time, in the world of outer space, great evil loomed,” Antonio read as Sebastian flipped the page, “We must defeat the star defenders! Said the evil overlord.”
Lovino couldn't help but crack a smile at the fake nasally voice. Sebastian was already reduced to a fit of laughs.
“A million light years away, in the star defenders ship, captain Uran was briefing his team,” Antonio looked over at Lovino's, nudging him on the shoulder.
Lovino rolled his eyes but spoke anyways, “Alright crew! We must defeat the menosmen bases before they can grow!but before then, no more ice cream !”
Sebastian couldn't help it. He fell over, laughing into his pillow, at his brother's attempt at a deeper and authoritative voice.
Antonio watched as Sebastian's face absolutely glowed with pure happiness. And Lovino's own wasn't that different. The Spaniard liked times like this, where the only thing they had to worry about was who was going to read what and how much their stomachs were going to ache from laughing. The ever so rare innocent smiles from Lovino were always a plus too. It was a nice break from the usual mayhem.
“But commander!” Sebastian could barely get through his line without breaking down, his voice purposely pitched high for the character, “How are we supposed to do that?”
With the dim lights and warm blankets around them, the three grew tired as they continues to flip through the pages. Their laughter died down and turned into content smiles and small chuckles at particularly funny moments. It was so warm, both from the blankets and the sweet atmosphere in the room. It was relaxing. Sebastian had stayed awake through the vast majority of the book, which he has never done before.
When Lovino was soundly asleep beside him, Sebastian figured that it would be safe to whisper to Antonio, “Toni can I ask you something?”
Antonio stopped reading, placing the book down, “of course Sebastian. Do you want a different story?”
“No it's not that,” Sebastian rolled over to face the taller boy. Placing his hands under his right ear like a pillow, Sebastian yawned, “Do you really like my brother?”
Antonio looked a little shocked, “of course I do.”
“That's good! Cause I really like you… Ludwigs a nice guy but he can be kinda scary,” Sebastian's eyes started to close, “Promise that I'll get to be the best man?”
“Hm?” Antonio smiled, “I promise. Buenos noches Sebastian.”
“You have to love him forever you know,” Sebastian was practically mumbling now, “He may be grumpy but he's my brother. And I know he needs it.”
Antonio chuckled at the small boys concern, pulling the blanket over the both of them. As he settled back in, he felt a smaller finger wrap around his pinky, “gotta promise.”
“I will definitely love him forever,” Antonio squeezed reassuringly, “I promise.”
Soon the two energetic souls were out like a light, both snoring lightly, but Lovino couldn't seem to sleep anymore. The tips of his ears a brilliant red.
______________
“Mattie tell Arthur to stop,” Alfred whined as he and Peter were shooed out of the kitchen, “he's going to poison us all.”
Peter pouted like the older male, both of them crossing their arms like petulant children. Well. One of them was a child so he had an excuse.
“Sorry Al,” Matthew shrugged, “not my house. And I'll be the one cooking so just go.”
Peter gave up, his attention span giving out, “Alfred can we just go play now?”
“Yeah,” Alfred sighed and a smile adorned his face again. He ruffled the boy’s hair, “What do you wanna do?”
“I got an idea! Follow me!” Peter tugged on his sleeve, pulling them towards the family room. The couch was big and placed across from an equally impressive tv. Peter had instructed him to sit on the sofa before he ran towards his room. Alfred could hear his footsteps on the floor and a concerning heavy thump before the frantic patterning resumed. When Peter re-emerged his tiny arms were filled with blankets and a few pillows balanced on top.
Alfred instantly got what he was going for, “Ultimate pillow fort time?”
Peter nodded excitedly and threw all the items in his arms to the ground, “we can make a big castle and play dragons!”
The two of them started to construct the pillow walls, making sure that they were sturdy enough to hold up nicely. When they started to run out of materials they ripped the couch cushions off and Peter sneaked into his siblings rooms. It wasn't like they were home anyways.
The fort was simple, it used the couch and three chairs for the back support, where they draped a nice blanket for a roof. But the majority of it has no roof, it was almost like an open courtyard. The wall wasn't that tall, but if Peter kneeled he would only be able to peer over the top of it. They decided to use Peter's Giant sea turtle plushie as a door, trying to make it seem more magical.
Peters laughter only grew as the tower of pillows Alfred had been working on toppled on top of the older boy. Alfred's stunned countenance only added onto the humor.
Alfred soon joined in, the child's laughter infectious. Both of them heaving on the ground by the time they calmed down. Peter breathlessly let out, “This is fun!”
Alfred smiled and turned to look at the happy look on Peter's face. He felt bad for the kid. All his brothers were much older than him, and he was usually trapped at home by himself. Alfred had always had Matthew growing up. His built in buddy.
“What in the world are you two doing?” Arthur was puzzled, looking down at the two figures lying on the ground.
Alfred peered up, “Pillow fort. Wanna join?”
“Um…” Arthur looked at the pillows then back down to Peter's content expression, he didn't want to ruin the fun, “I don't know if that's such a good idea.”
Peter offered an oblivious smile, “C’mon Arthur! You're always too busy to play.”
Which was true. Arthur of course never meant to be extremely busy whenever he had a chance to see his youngest brother, he just was. Peter understood to some extent, but he was still just a kid. Arthur felt guilty though.
“Okay…” He reluctantly joined them in them pillow fortress, “What are we playing?”
Alfred placed a hand on his friend's shoulder, “Lighten up dude! I think we were just about to play knights right?”
“Yeah!” Peter crawled into the hooded part of the fort, “Wait right here!”
As Peter rummaged through the tent Arthur turned, “This is… rather impressive.”
“Thanks,” Alfred had a proud smile on, “I try.”
Peter re-emerged with three different things in his hands; First was a tail that could be worn as a belt, second was a foam sword, and lastly there was a flower crown looking headpiece. It had nice ribbon intertwined with the flowers, the ribbon extending and flowing freely in the back.
Taking the sword for himself, Peter handed Alfred and tail and placed the crown on his brother's head. “I'm going to be the knight!”
Arthur reached up to touch the object that had been placed on his head while Alfred strapped the tail on. Arthur glanced around confused, “How do you play this?”
“Well, you're the princess,” Peter smiled at him, oblivious to the indignant squawk that Arthur let out. It was one thing to let Feliks embarrass him by making him play such a girly part, but his own family?
Alfred laughed, practically reading his friend's mind, “Or you can be a very pretty prince.”
“Yeah!” Peter cheered, “and I gotta rescue you from the dragon!”
“Why can't I be the dragon? Don't you want to stab me Peter?” Arthur raised an eyebrow. His brother gave him a puzzling look, obviously trying to come up with a reason.
“Because beginners aren't allowed to be something cool.” Peter settled on, crossing his arms.
Alfred nodded, “now go to the tower prince. I must keep the noble knight from getting you.”
Sighing, Arthur obeyed and sat on the staircase between the kitchen and living room. Alfred gleefully followed, standing at the base of the stairs. Alfred and Peter used to play this a lot more when they were younger. They would usually use dolls though, waiting for Arthur to stop doing whatever it was that he had to do before they did something else.
Peter began to count down from twenty. With the dampened numbers from the living room echoing around them, Alfred leaned closer to Arthur “So basically, you have to just stay here until Peter slays me.”
“It's quite self explanatory Alfred,” Arthur rolled his eyes.
Alfred huffed, “Well you were the one that wanted to know how to play before.”
And before Arthur could retort Peter came barreling in, foam sword drawn. Alfred was prepared for it though, quickly blocking it with his arm.
“Die dragon! Let the prince go!” Peter went to go slash again. Arthur let out a fond laugh at the scrunched up and fox used look on Peter’s face, the tiny kid was taking this game extremely seriously.
Alfred let out something akin to a roar and turned to face Arthur. For a split second, Arthur was able to raise an eyebrow, giving him a questioning look. But Alfred never responded, instead he just wore a devious smirk before throwing Arthur over his shoulder.
“Alfred! Put me down this instant!” Arthur wriggled as Alfred made a mad dash for the living room. Peter stood there stunned for a moment. Carrying the princess was never part of the game.
Peter tilted his head before laughing, dashing after the two, “Come back here dragon! Give back his highness!”
Surely running in circles with someone hoisted on his would tire Alfred out, but five minutes later and he was still trying to dash away from Peter. The little boy himself was giggling hysterically, trying to keep himself from toppling over with laughter. Arthur could feel Alfred’s grip on his legs tighten, the warm grip readjusting as they ran in circles around the staircase.
Under different and not so jostling circumstances, Arthur would have been embarrassed and extremely flushed. But instead he was laughing along with them. Alfred was absolutely thrilled to feel the soft vibrations coming from his friend.
Arthur could see Peters amusement from his position on Alfred's shoulder. The little boy was happier than Arthur had ever seen him, which made Arthur's smile just a little bit wider. He cared about his younger brothers happiness, and if playing these silly games with Alfred and himself would offer his brother just that, then he would gladly give his time to watch his little brothers face light up. Of course he would never say this out loud, peter would protest that it was too mushy or something.
But as they were making another lap around the staircase, the front door opened. Peter bumped into Alfred's legs and stumbled backwards as Alfred stopped moving in his tracks. Arthur tried to crane his neck to see what had made the game pause so abruptly, but he couldn't see past.
“I see you're having fun,” came the light yet gruff tone that Arthur recognized and couldn't really tell if he loved or not. His mother did mention something about Allistor coming by.
“Hi Allistor!” Peter chirped, poking his head out from behind Alfred’s leg. Alfred seemed to unfreeze and Arthur felt himself being lowered to the ground. Alfred had wrapped an arm around the shorter blonde’s waist when his feet touched the ground since he had stumbled a bit. After regaining his posture, Arthur turned to his eldest brother
“Hello Allistor, Fiona. I see that Cecillia is doing…” Arthur looked at his soon to be sister in law and her swelling stomach, “Well.”
Fiona narrowed her eyes and Alfred could feel the two youngest Kirkland brothers cower a little, Peter’s grip on Alfred’s leg tightening and Alfred’s grip on Arthur’s waist tightening as well. Fiona rubbed at her stomach, “Yes, Cecillia is doing fine. She is due in two months after all, Arthur.”
“Play nice,” Allistor hissed before clapping his hands together, “So how are my two underlings?”
Peter just nodded, still eyeing Fiona’s long and sharp nails. Arthur just sighed, “We’re good. Mum and Dad just left a little while ago and Matthew is making cookies in the kitchen.”
Allistor nodded before toeing off his shoes and wandering towards the kitchen. As Fiona trailed after the older Kirkland, the three left visibly relaxed, letting out a sigh.
“How about we just go wait in the fort for the cookies to be done!” Alfred tried to get Peter to smile again, “I bet I can beat you there!”
Peter just nodded excitedly, taking off before Alfred could even register the conformation, “Hey! That’s cheating!”
Arthur smiled warmly, walking after Alfred, who started to sprint. The tower of pillows jostled a bit as Peter and Alfred ran full force towards the canopy part of their fort, diving on the couch. Alfred pulled Arthur down by the waist underneath the blanket top once the brit wandered close enough to be snatched. Breathing hard, Peter held something in front of all of them, it was glowing weird colors.
“Look! I got this for christmas!” Peter watched amusedly as the color changed from blue to green, “Its a bright lite!”
He held the fluffy pillow close to his chest, and let Alfred wrap and arm around him as well. Held close to the warmth, Peter could feel his eyes starting to droop down and a small smile grace his lips.
“It’s great Peter,” Alfred mumbled as he and Arthur were left to watch the lights change underneath the dark tent, “It’s really cool.”
In the kitchen, Matthew was rolling out dough and using cookie cutters to make fun shaped cookies. He didn't even look up when he heard someone come into the kitchen, “Alfred! I told you they will be done in one second, I’m taking them out now! Calm your fatass!”
“Wow… I never thought that I would hear little Mattie say something like that,” Matthew lifted his head up so fast that he thought his neck snapped, “Hey.”
“Allistor! What are you doing here?” Matthew sheepishly laughed, “I mean this is your house and all but… ”
Matthew almost jumped backwards at the woman’s appearance. She was sickly thin except for her pregnant stomach, “Hi. I’m Fiona.”
What in all mighty demons hell is that-she. She's a… female. I think. Matthew forced himself to look at Allistor, “Well this batch is done.”
The piping hot chocolate chip cookies looked delicious. The three of them wanted to eat the whole tray by themselves. But they wouldn’t. They couldn't. To stop temptation they let the cookies cool and started to walk towards the living room.
“Al! Peter! The cookies are re-” Matthews voice died in his throat as he peaked into the tent.
Allistor chuckled behind him, Fiona letting out a huff, “Well I’ll be damned.”
Alfred had both of the Kirklands laying on his shoulders, a content smile on all of their faces. Peter was drooling a bit though, the glowing pillow clutched to his body for dear life, and a spot on Alfred's T-shirt darkening with the liquid.  hand was caught under Alfred’s, close to his hip and his hair messed up in a funny but cute looking way. All three looked like they had just passed out from exhaustion. Which was extremely possible.
“We should probably let them sleep,” Matthew let the flap of blanket fall from his head, “More cookies for us though!”
_______________________________
They ate dinner about three hours ago, Leon left two hours ago, and Emil was tucked into bed less than an hour ago. Matthias practically melded with the couch after popping a random movie into the dvd player. Lukas wasn’t in any better shape, looking tired as hell from making sure that the two fourth graders were entertained all day. That meant eating, some messy arts and crafts, saving a vase from breaking during an intense nerf war (That vase almost knocking over was sooooo not Matthias’ fault… it was who ever decided that it would be a good idea to place a vase in the corner of a room’s fault.), and an bedtime story that dragged on for an hour or two.
Lukas didn't even protest when Matthias threw a blanket over them and pulled him into a side hug. He greatly accepted the gesture, tiredly leaning into the touch, “Kids are hard work.”
“Yeah…” Matthias chuckled, “I don't remember ever being that accident prone. Not to mention they’re attention spans are practically non-existent.”
The dane could practically feel Lukas rolling his eyes, “You don’t remember that because you still haven’t grown out of that phase.”
“Hey!” Matthias shoved him over a little, “I’m still as adorable as a kid too.”
Lukas just hummed, “Sure.”
It was quiet for a few more milliseconds, Lukas and Matthias finally letting out the desperately needed sigh of relief. The day had turned out to be a more stressful one than either of them had anticipated,  fun, but stressful. Just as they had settled in, both their eyelids becoming heavy with sleep, there was a small tug at the blanket. Reluctantly wrenching their eyes open, Matthias and Lukas sat up.
“Emil! Whats wrong?” Lukas looked at the fidgeting boy standing in front of them, Emil’s white nightshirt and dinosaur pants were rumpled and his silky white hair was knotted, “Can’t sleep?”
Emil just shook his head and wedged his way into a spot between the the elder boys, Matthias lifted the blanket for him to crawl under. There were no more words spoken, Emil just fell back asleep after being wrapped up and surrounded by warmth. When Matthias could hear Lukas’ faint snoring he turned to look at the boys next to him. Emils head was snuggly fit in the crook of Lukas’ neck and Lukas’ head rested nicely on top of Emil’s. Matthias reached over, praying to god that he wouldn’t wake them as he placed a small peck on both of their foreheads. He sighed contently, letting himself get pulled in by sleep.

Lovino woke up by someone pouncing on him, laughing in his face. He tried to blink open his eyes, “Lovino! Wake up!”
Lovino’s first instinct was to panic, “What? Sebastian what happened?”
“Nothing! But today’s new year’s eve and were making churros!” Sebastians cheery voice filled the room.
Lovino’s next move was to throw the pillow back over his head, “Where is Antonio? Ask him to help you.”
“He is! We need you to come too!” Sebastian was already trying to tug him out.
Lovino sighed, knowing that it was only a matter of moments before Sebastian would start to throw a fit. But before he could feign sleeping for a few more moments, he was being lifted off the ground. An arm hooked under his legs and back. Squeaking in shock, Lovino glared at Antonio’s bright smile. It was only… what? Nine am?
Who the hell was up at nine am during a break?
“Lovi! We gotta get ready for the new year!” Antonio dropped him on the mattress, “Get dressed! Sebastian and I have already prepared the batter!”
“Lovino! Lovino! Hurry! Were going to go to the kitchen!” Lovino huffed as he removed the shirt that was thrown at him from his vision, “Antonio! I bet I can beat you there!”
“I’ll give you a head start! Count to ten,” Antonio stood, hands on his hips laughing as the boy squealed with giggles before running away, “You better run!”
Lovino rolled his eyes at their childish behavior, “You two are ridiculous.”
There was no malice behind his words, only a faint trace of fondness. Antonio smiled, wrapping him up in a hug, “Get dressed, we have a lot of things to do today!”
Antonio screamed out “Ten!” even though Sebastian was probably already half way across the campus and heading towards a home ec. Room. He ran out after them and Lovino started to get dressed a little faster. Wanting to join in their game.

When Peter shook himself awake, he was in his bed. He didn't remember ever going up to his room, but he figured that he must have been transferred there at some point during the night. He had also been changed into Pjs. But not his cool ones, the old shark ones. Must have been his brother, Arthur still thought he was only five. He could smell something good coming from downstairs, which meant that Arthur was not cooking, which meant that Alfred or Matthew had stayed over. And his stomach growled.
Peter was hungry.
As he stumbled into the kitchen, Alfred was plating pancakes and bacon for three. He paused as he saw Peter enter, “Good morning!”
“Good morning Alfred! Happy new years eve!” Peter plopped in a seat at the island.
Alfred laughed, “It’s going to be a good new year, right? Why don’t you go into the living room, we can watch TV while we eat breakfast!”
Peter nodded, smiling wide, he loved sunday cartoons. He hadnt been able to watch them in a while, his parents hogging the TV to watch the morning news. He climbed back down the chair, and padded towards the living room. He tilted his head, confused when he saw that the castle had been dismantled, but he didnt mind. Instead, on the couch Arthur sat and the television was spewing news about the new years party in new york and whatnot.
“Here Peter,” Arthur reached over and passed him the remote, “I think Spongebob or something should be on.”
Peter gleefully took the remote, sitting down on the floor in front of the couch so he didn’t disrupt Arthur’s careful folding. Wait. What? Why was his brother folding laundry?
“What are you doing Arthur?” Peter looked up at his brother.
Arthur furrowed his eyebrows for a moment, “What does it look like I’m doing Peter? I’m folding the laundry that I did this morning.”
“Yeah… but why did you do the laundry?” Peter watched as Arthur carefully folded a pair of pants, “Aren’t those... my... clothes?”
Arthur just nodded, “When I went to go get your clothes ready for today I couldn’t find one pair of socks. Peter, tell me, where are all your socks going? You lose them almost all the time.”
“Are you harping the kid about his socks?” Alfred came in with a tray of food and plopped down next to Peter who reached for a strip of bacon, “Arthur, everyone knows that the sock monster eats them. He’s a hungry guy.”
Arthur rolled his eyes as Peter nodded along, “Yes. I bet his appetite is as large as yours right? And that’s why even after doing all of Peter’s laundry I still can’t find a single pair?”
“We can go buy him more socks when we go get the stuff for the party tonight,” Alfred waved him off before continuing to cut Peter’s extra large pancake up into triangle slices, “Easy fix.”
Arthur shook his head, starting to put all the folded clothes back into the laundry basket to be put away later, “If he keeps just getting new socks, he’s never going to take responsibility for them. And what party are you talking about?”
“He’s a fourth grader Arthur, his socks are bound to disappear,”  Alfred held out a fork with a bit of pancake on it for Arthur, “And I am talking about our party of three for New Years eve. Duh. Mattie and Gil are doing something with Feliciano and Ludwig and your brother left for Fiona’s parents house, remember?”
Arthur took the bite of pancake, carefully slipping off the couch, “What a hoot that party will be.”
Peter was absorbed in his cartoons, laughing to himself as the character did something particularly stupid. Alfred stuffed another pancake bit into the distracted boys mouth, “It’ll be the best one of the new year!”

“Matthias! No, a little lower!” Emil watched as Matthias wobbled a bit on the chair he was standing on, “It has to be perfect!”
The dane streched as far as he could to hang up the banner, “Is that good?”
Emil made a frame with his fingers, connecting the two L’s that he made, “Just a little more to the right, no my right...Down a bit, up!”
“Desserts 's almost re-” Lukas came in, his apron dusted with flour and chocolate, “What are you doing?”
Matthias huffed and just tied the string where it was despite Emil’s glare, “Decorating!”
“Isn’t it a little late for that?” Lukas looked towards the cable box, “It's five minutes to midnight. New Year’s eve is almost over.”
“Ah is it really that late already?” Matthias hopped down from the chair that he was standing on, scooping Emil up with one arm, “Turn on the countdown! We’ll be there in a second.”
Lukas sighed as the two of them disappeared up the stairs. He went back into the kitchen to grab the ice cream and cookies they had prepared for the count down. Lukas tapped his foot as he impatiently flipped through the channels to find the one the NYC countdown would be best broadcasted. There were only a minute left and he could still hear Matthias and Emil giggling over something above him. They were going to miss it.
5…
4…
3…
2…
1…
There was a distinct pop noise and Lukas was showered with Confetti. Lukas turned his head and saw his brother smiling, holding a mini confetti cannon, and when he turned the other way-
Lukas didn’t register Matthias’ lips on his own until he heard the dulled out, “Ew! That’s gross!”
Though Emil’s giggles and protests were lost once Matthias placed one hand to the back of Lukas’ head and the other on the small of his back. It was soft and light, nothing intense, but it was still just as sweet.
“Okay… You can stop now,” Emil wedged himself in between them.
Matthias laughed and Lukas just stat stunned, Emil just pouted. Hugging both of them, Matthias cheered, “Happy New Year!”

“Turn the music up more!” Sebastian cupped his hands around his mouth, “There’s no one here!”
“Sebastian the countdown is going to start soon!” Antonio screamed above the music, “Were never going to be able to hear it!”
Sebastian didn’t listen, instead he wandered over to the speaker system and tapped the plus button until the music was at an ear splitting volume. He grabbed his brother’s hand and Antonio’s, moving around and swaying, “Dance!”
“Five seconds!” Lovino shouted, looking at the small Laptop screen. Sebastian was still jumping up and down as fast as his little body could.
The youngest italian smiled, “Five!”
Sebastian held on tighter to both of their hands before loosening considerably, “Four!”
“Three!” Sebastian pulled his brother’s hand and the spaniards together, linking them, “Two!”
“One!” Pushing his brother on the back, the two older boys crashed together, Lovino’s head on Antonio’s chest.
The taller male just smiled, cupping Lovino’s cheeks and leaning down. Lovino gasped a little and closed his eyes as he sunk into his New Years kiss.
“Lovino’s kissing someone! Lovino’s kissing someone!”
Lovino broke away, hugging the boy so tight that Sebastian was starting to hit his brothers arm, “Shut up you little brat.”

“And I think that one’s the big dipper!” Alfred pointed up towards the sky, “And that one’s orion's belt.”
“What about that one?” Peter gestured to a cluster of stars. The air was cold outside, since it was January, and the grass in the Kirklands backyard wasn’t very warm. Peter didn’t mind it though, he was in his fluffiest winter coat and wedged nicely in between the two teens.
Arthur squinted at the stars, “I think thats Canis Minor.”
“Oh! Guys, I think it’s almost time!” Alfred looked at his watch, “Where’s the radio?”
Peter shuffled a little bit, producing a small device from under him, “I have it!”
Alfred took it from the younger boy, pulling out the antenna and playing with the dials until they found a channel. It started playing broadcasting some station in New York.
“Alright folks!” the radio crackled, “Let’s start our countdown into the new year! Grab that special someone and pull them close. It’s time! Five!”
Peter started to laugh and cheered, linking his arms together with his brother and Al, he started to scream along with the radio people, “Four, three, two, on-!”
The little boy stopped when he felt his brother and Alfred kiss his cheeks, pressing hard enough for Peter to have to make a fishy face. Smiling contently, Peter held onto both their hands, pressing them close to his chest.
Arthur’s face was hot and red, from the cold or embarrassment, and Alfred’s smile was brighter than the stars. They held their foreheads together, Peter still wedged in between them and cheering, “Happy New Year!”

“Emil were leaving now!” Lukas called up to his brother, Matthias already pulling their suitcases out the door.
The boy thumped down the stairs, “Wait! Lukas!”
“Whats wrong?” Lukas looked a little panicked at his brothers flushed face.
Emil just smiled up at him, “Ya know Lukas… Matthias is really cool.”
“Mmhm?”
Emil just gave a smirk that made him look a lot older than he was, “He’s a great guy. And he’d make a great boyfriend~”
“Emil!” Lukas tensed, face bright red.
The younger boy just laughed, “He’s practically family already, why not just make it official?”
Lukas couldn't get his brother’s smug expression out of his head the whole way back to Hetahigh.

“Alfred!” Peter whined, “You’re going to come back soon right?”
Alfred ruffled the boy’s hair, smiling, “Of course buddy! Just tell your brother when.”
And although Peter tried his best to be upbeat, as soon as Alfred went to start the car, Peter started to cry. The tears streaming down his face was a giant contrast to the happy expression he had been wearing all week, and it made Arthur’s heart break slightly.
“Peter… Why are you so upset?” Arthur knelt down to eye level with the boy, “Were going to come back soon…”
Peter furiously swipped at his eyes, “But… I don’t want you guys to leave!”
“Peter… you have to be a big boy now okay?” Arthur pulled the boy into his chest, carding his hand through the boy’s hair, “Why are you so upset?”
“Because… What if Alfred is like Alli?” Peter wiped his snot on his brothers shoulder.
It took Arthur a moment to realize what his brother was talking about. A little while ago, about seven months to be exact, Allistor was still living at home. Allistor worked only a block away, as a manager of a restaurant and it was easier for both of Arthur’s parents and him to stay in the Kirklands house to watch over Peter when he could. Though that all changed when he found out that his girlfriend, Fiona, was pregnant. Suddenly it was all proposals and moving boxes.
And Peter was left alone…
“Oh Peter…” Arthur rubbed circles on his back, “Alfred’s not going anywhere sweetie…”
The sniffles started up again, “But! But! What if he gets a benancy like Allistor! Then he’s gonna have to move away and not visit for a long time.”
“It’s a fiance honey… and that’s part of growing up. You fall in love and get married,” Arthur swallowed a lump in his throat, “But Alfred and Allistor will always love you.”
“But! I don’t want Alfred to get married! Cause then he’s not going to be around,” Peter pulled away to look into Arthur’s eyes, “You can’t let him okay!”
“What?” Arthur tilted his head.
“Promise?” Peter’s voice was hard and serious.
Arthur smiled, “I can’t guarantee that Peter. You marry who you love and you can’t stand in the way of that.”
“Then…” Peter furrowed his eyebrows and stared hard at the ground, “You marry him! Promise me that you’ll marry him! That way he’ll be my big brother too for real and… and… You guys can come visit me more. Together!”
“Peter…” Arthur’s pupils were blown wide, “I…”
The boy just stuck out his littlest finger, “Pinky promise me Arthur? You love him, don’t you?”
Arthur had to leave, he couldn’t be sure if he would be able to keep that promise but he wrapped his pinky around his brothers and kissed his forehead goodbye.
