Personally what’s your favourite trolls and least favourite? (Reasons why would also be really appreciated)

Personally I like Elwurd and Lynera the best for reasons that are definitely not related to projection. Least favorite is hard for me to pin down because I've spent so much time thinking about these folks and trying to expand on areas where they're less developed. Love me some clowns, I've always had an appreciation for unhinged characters, but my absolute favorites are Chahut and Karako. Least favorite… I dunno, there aren't really any that I dislike in FS? In Homestuck in general I took personal issue with the Zahhaks because this is not how I want Sagittarius to be represented WHY -Hal Elsen, voice actor

I like Elwurd, Daraya, Lanque, Mallek, Tagora, Polypa, and Skylla. I'm gay. Not a huge fan of Zebruh, but damn do I love voicing him, and also not a giant fan of like. Fozzer, idk why. I'm a bad VA so I haven't played the game yet. -CL, voice actor

If we're gonna go with Friendsim- Elwurd, Chixie, and Tyzias all appeal to my typical Character Likes. Chahut also appeals, but I feel Incredibly Conflicted About It because of my stance on purple characters in general also Polypa is my Secret Homegirl Now because I can't help but develop attachments to characters I've voiced X,D Tagora's smug aura mocks me and I don't care for it -Juniper, voice actor

As a cancellable offense i will still admit Zebruh still holds my thoughts on a gorilla grip because his route is absolutely hilarious despite his yikes. specifically referring to their canon appearances and not fs2, our favorite is probably Chahut? She's got a lot going on, we like her design and her relationship with Amisia is very cute And uh - We… Don't really care for any of the ceruleans tbh (Wait, append that: mallek is cool he can stay - The rest of the ceruleans we dont care for)

As for fs2… Control in volume 11 is great we wish we could take credit for her The murder victim in volume 1 always felt kinda flat to us, like they're more of a plot point than an actual troll so they're our least favorite -Lorelei, writer

Favorite - i like mostly any trolls but also… tirona. Shes a lik freak. Least favorite - tirona. She is like scrappy doo of the homestuck universe. I want to throw here baby soft spot head towards a wall -Fable, artist

Eridan has always been my personal favorite. I'd say my least favorite would be Karkat--I get he's set to be redeemed but the team did nothing with him except make him whiny and force vriska into leading everyone -Valentine, voice actor

I will have to say Marvus is certainly my favorite ! I love his design but also his whole presence and attitude in his volume.

A least fav is harder because there is a number of trolls I don't "like" but they are such good characters that I still enjoy them a lot ! So I'll have to go with zebruh even if he is very entertaining as a bad guy xD -Herk, artist

Chiming in to say chixie is probably my favorite troll cause her struggles are relatable. Second place goes to Marvus cause he's pretty chill all things considered.

ok ok so. i have a lot of stuff 4 grian so far so im gonna start with him.

first of all his horns r supposed to be somewhat like the evo symbol. shortly after the last edit he got kicked out of the brooding caverns early and they just kinda gave him over to whatever cult represents the watchers here. also it's my au and i get to decide what old grian content is canon. yhs is too. one of his horns got ripped out by sam while they were both like 3 sweep olds. also he dresses like a rust instead of a purple (w the makeup instead of facepaint. slay) because something something not wanting to associate with the other purplebloods.

for scar uhhhh. i just think he fits rlly well as a jade. cannot explain why. maybe it's lanque but he just gives me male jade vibes. also jellie is his lusus and thats important and everyone needs to know this. his whole story with jellie is kinda like crytum and platycat (if u havent played all of sbb, he never had a lusus and then got a cat one for emotional support after moving to the stronghold). scar's horns r also based off allay wings and i think they r rlly cool :D

i made mumbo a gold and i was gonna make his eyes red like redstone, but i thought he fit more like jentha with whatever the fuck she had going on. his horns r supposed to be redstone torches. dunno where he fits in the present though (ie second edit) maybe he died idk.

i have less 2 say abt ren and martyn since i dont remember much from 3l but i am so insane abt them. ren as a rust and martyn as an indigo :shoutpole: GET THIS. ren takes sestros place as ceo of the world basically but his second in command is on the complete other side of the spectrum. idk if the differing lifespan thing is canon in ve (like it is in aleph null) but it WOULD be funny if it was.

Outwardly, Lanque pulls the “that’s just how it is on this bitch of an earth.” He’s not going to stop them or say anything, but he will snitch ASAP because he wants that quid pro quo, hurt for hurt. He definitely does not think it’s okay, and he definitely loses respect towards a person who can’t be devoted and honest in a committed relationship. For all that he may shirk his duties and responsibilities as a jade, you don’t live a lifestyle like that and not want to have something similar to the dedication that you give to a system you may not even believe in.

More personally, I think Lanque is jaded (no pun intended) enough to believe that people are inherently good. Does he think cheating is justified? No, but he knows it happens and he wouldn’t be surprised if it happened to him, either. Though he sees no real reason to cheat, he is not so idealistic to not expect it. He personally would never consider the idea in his own committed relationships, few and far between as those are. Making someone jealous with a little flirting, however, is fair game. Cheating to Lanque is more an emotional thing than a physical thing.

OKAY so deep headcanon time. I associate rainbow drinkers with victorian era stories of vampires (it’s about the repressed se//xuality, sensuaIity, and longing), and because of this I think there is a lot of flower language and symbolism that dedicated fans like to devote themselves to.

Lanque is a dedicated fan; his rp sessions are well researched. He knows the flower language. 

BUT he also has to like the shape of the flower itself. So, his favorite flowers are: gardenias (the white petals to remind you of his white lapels; the meaning is “secret love), wild roses (outward appearance of traditional romance, the meaning is “pleasure and pain”), calla lillies (the yonic suggestiveness of the deep color surrounded by white is well known and well documented in purple prose throughout rainbow drinker livechurnal rpers, the meaning is simply “beauty), and amaryllis (an ostentatious flower for “pride”).

👧 - What is Lanque’s relationship like with his siblings cloistermates? Who does he get along with best?

In order of most well liked to least well liked:

Wanshi: The truth comes out: Lanque gets along children. There’s a small spark of hope he feels when he sees innocence and genuine, childlike happiness; he wants her to feel that for as long as possible, but at the same time he feels both resentment and resignation. She won’t keep that innocence long, and he’s jealous that she gets to feel it at all. Still, they have fun together. Wanshi is good at bringing out the storyteller in Lanque, and Lanque likes that she’s an accidental shit starter (not her fault the jades are all so wound tight).

Daraya: he truly sees her as a younger version of himself, like a little sister. There’s a secret desire there to make her the best version of what he’s trying to be, since he believes he can help her prevent making the same mistakes he has. They genuinely have fun griping and complaining and slacking off together. Just because they get along, though, doesn’t mean they don’t butt heads. Lanque thinks she tries too hard to be apathetic; Daraya thinks Lanque can be pushy and too eager to jump into risky behavior. Lanque thinks Daraya is impulsive; Daraya thinks the same of him. Daraya thinks Lanque tries too hard and goes to far to prove his points; Lanque thinks Daraya has no points to prove.

Bronya: Feels some grudging respect towards her, but yearns for the person she could have been. Lanque will never get along with people who he perceives (or people who perceive themselves) as authority figures. I have too many feelings to articulate in words about their relationship; I tried to capture it in my fic “Self (ish)” but idk if I was successful. I’ll make another post about it when I can organize my thoughts better. 

Karako: His “annoying” younger brother; really, he’s jealous that Bronya lets Karako get away with so much shit that the jades would get reamed for. But Karako is a good listener, and they occasionally have fun exploring the caverns together. Lanque finds Karako’s curiosity endearing, despite everything. Still, the caste divide does drive a wedge between them. Lanque refuses to acknowledge and struggles on Karako’s part because Lanque views the cloistered jade struggle as the worst there is.

Lynera: Bad boy, meet snitch. Need I say more? They hate each other and I genuinely do not believe either will ever miss the other.

🔗 - What are Lanque’s standards for meaningful relationships? How quickly does he form relationships like these?

Please forgive me for bullet points! I’m having a hard time organizing these points for whatever reason.

-There has to be devotion and dedication. He needs to feel wanted and pursued.

-Hates to feel pitied; it’s easier for him to swallow anger. If he can see your anger towards the system instead of waxing poetic about how he ~*suffers*~, he is more likely to trust you and assume that you’d be willing to help him. It’s the difference between kindness and niceness for him; if your car broke down on the side of the road, apologizing for the break down doesn’t do shit without a jack and a wrench. Lanque has no need for niceties in his life, but genuine kindness goes a long way for him, especially if it isn’t sugar coated.

-Needs to feel a deep emotional connection with someone. Lanque secretly judges his meaningful relationships on how much hurt they could bring him: the idea of losing them, the idea of being without. If it hurts, he knows his feelings are real. He doesn’t latch onto people easily.

-As for how quickly, it’s a long process. He needs time to accept his feelings, first, and he will put you through the gauntlet before committing. It’s a little “if you can’t handle me at my Worst, you don’t deserVe me at my best 💅💅 “ but it’s also a little bit of fear, too. As stated above, he judges his feelings based on how much it would hurt to lose you. If he’s putting you through the gauntlet, he can convince himself it wasn’t meant to be if you leave.

okay so admittedly my initial thought is just “i think she’s neat” jfkdlsafjkl

but in a genuine way, skylla is the first older troll you meet, and one of the few with something resembling an actual job, and i think there’s something really special about that! she’s very down to earth (alternia, technically) and she takes you in without even questioning why the fuck you’re out there just bcus she doesn’t want you to burn up!!

and then!! she kicks like?? a dozen asses??? bcus she cares about ladyy and her lusus so much??? like they have lasers and shit and she just kicks their ass bcus she can’t let them win

she’s also a cowgirl and that’s cool as hell

2. Tyzias

honestly, if you don’t love tyzias you can just leave /jk

jfdaklsdfslk but actually, i love how much she’s trying. she knows alternia is deep in its own shit, she knows that it might just be too much for one person to take on, she knows what the consequences are for getting caught, but she’s still trying!! bcus she looked at the world and instead of accepting the bullshit like so many people (mallek) do she went “actually no, why is no one doing anything about that?” and she starts trying to do something about it. and even trying to get other people to help! 

as an outside observer, it’s kind of the first act of a tragedy, bcus obv most people playing friendsim have read homestuck, you know what alternia looked like in its last throes of troll occupation, you know that, at least in the timeline of homestuck proper, that tyzias is just one in a long line of people who tried. but those people also went down in history, even if that history was almost scrubbed over fuschia. i’d like to think somewhere on alternia, maybe in secret corners of teal bookhives or in the care of a jade cloister, someone wrote about her. i want to give tyzias a hug

3. Daraya

she’s just! she’s just so tired! and she reminds me a lot of when i was a teen, lost in the idea that there was no such thing as a fulfilling future, bcus everyone around you tells you what’s expected of you and everything they say seems like a tragedy not worth living to see. the sensation of living in apathy bcus facing the hurt and lonely despair is too much to handle when you’re a teenager trying to get by in the world. the idea that maybe if you dress up and put on a face everyone will just leave you alone and you can find your own comforts before ultimately preparing to leave the future everyone planned for you behind in the pursuit of something else that may very well be worse for you but gives you a sense of control back

and then!!! and then she opens up to you!!! bcus you can be someone who listens to her and understands that hopelessness and says “hey, i think i can give you a sense of the control that you’re searching for” and finds her someone her own age who can help her take control of at least some part of her life and maybe, if they're lucky, even give some other jade in the future more freedom than daraya could even imagine

(and tbh if i said i’d never, in my worst years, debated burning a building down with. intentions. i’d be lying)

4. Wanshi

tbh! kind of similar to daraya!! i see a lot of my younger self in wanshi, right down to the warrior cats rp and the sensation of knowing that many of the people in your life are lying to you if only bcus they think you don’t realize what they’re doing and chasing a sense of community through fanfic and cons bcus the people in your mandatory social circle aren’t willing to engage you at a level that actually makes you happy or even at all. even some of her face with death and having to come to terms with things the adults in your life wouldn’t necessarily think were appropriate for your age simply bcus of the way life takes you (granted, i was a little older than she is when i started doing con + online stuff, but you get the idea)

and just like, her route? it’s 1. fantastic 2. it’s one of the only times the reader is like... nurturing, toward one of the younger trolls, if that makes sense? they go into the entire route with wanshi’s safety and happiness in mind, and when the former has to take precedence over the latter they still try to make her happy to soften the blow, specifically by inviting her to set the rules of engagement so that it’s actually something she enjoys! and in the bad ending you literally. you know. die for her. and that's not something you get with the other younger trolls? like, amisia can both take care of herself and naturally takes command of the situation, and tirona i mostly just feel bad for more than anything, and the twins... a lot happens vis a vis the twins. karako i Also want to take care of but that’s mostly bcus he’s v small and you don’t take care of him the same way you do for wanshi in her route

5. Bronya

look............ i love bronya jkfldsaf

she’s also just!! she’s trying!! and she’s trying her best!! and it’s in a different way from tyzias but it’s just as aahhhhhh. she wants to help, in her own way, and she’s probably scoured every book, file, and teal at some point to make sure her grubs and her jades are safe! she’s not even the oldest jade in their cloister, she just wants them all to be okay and make it home and learn the ways of their role so that they don’t get culled (and aren’t jackasses, considering how she talks to lanque in his route, but his route is <_<). and tbh considering the amount of shit they give her for it, she seems to allow the other jades to sneak out more than you’d expect considering her personality in her + elwurd’s routes lmao

and the fact that she runs the nursery just has me ;u; every time i think about it. like, she’s not required and probably not even supposed to do that, and she even mentions that she does it knowing that some of the grubs may still get sick or die during their trials, but it means so much to her that they get a second chance that she’s willing to make a not-technically-illegal nursery to give them that chance bcus who else? who else will? i’d like to think that nursery was still there, was maybe even an idea that stretched across alternia, all the way to the end.

and wow uh!!! that was long jfklda these are a little more about why i like the character, but i think that’s just bcus their routes play such a big part in that!!

my runner-ups, if you were wondering, were karako, stelsa, polypa, and boldir’s lol. i also like marsti as a character but her route gives me too much second-hand embarrassment jfdklasf

god, I love Zer0 so much, they are def my fave bl2 vault hunter. I love their vibe, their design, their lines (I really love how they just made them speak in haikus), everything abt them is great. I love how we know very little abt them and with their mysterious vibe they still manage to be so playful and unpredictable in the best way. seriously, they are so good

bruh, he’s my MAN, my absolute fave Hiveswap character. it was honestly a love at first sight and he became the reason why I got into Hiveswap in the first place. waiting for his route was completely worth it and I fell in love with him even more. honestly one of my fave characters in general

p self explanatory imo? this goes into a bit of detail about how despite the relationship being over, he’s still thinking about it and he feels bad about what he did and how he treated them.

‘ Will they moVe the future? ’ implies that despite his regret, he doesn’t feel like he’ll learn from his mistakes since he’s made them so many times before. especially so with the next line ‘ Shall they amount to much more than What unmoors my here and noW? ’

he already feels insecure, and any future mistakes he makes are just going to contribute to that;;

If I restrict my World to that but Which is before my eyes To those Whom I may touch, to that Which I might alter; One Would no doubt conclude that thoughts of You are last among What I could consider to “matter”.

this a really interesting stanza, recognizing that the past and present don’t matter, much less any people in the past that hurt him. he knows he should be looking at the here and now, but he can’t help but feel anxious about what happened and what will happen in future relationships.

( also keep in mind that ‘You’ is capitalized, not as a part of lanque’s quirk despite how naturally it seems to fit with his quirk. i kind of ended up interpreting it how ‘You’ is capitalized like you would ‘God’ and ‘Lord’ implying lanque puts this person on an insanely high pedestal? )

it’s super interesting imo that he chooses to say ‘could’ instead of ‘should’, implying he sees it as an option to stop thinking about the other but not a necessity or, for that matter, the best option he has. 

it implies that he recognizes that he has the option to learn from his mistakes, but........

And still You haunt me yet, like a scar, like a disease uneager to abate. Who are You and Who am I, after so long Without You?

it kind of hit me at this point that despite the fact that it was something lanque was recently thinking about, it’s... possible that it wasn’t a recent relationship. he’s clearly fully submerging himself into the role of the victim in this horrible relationship with emotional abuse to the point of forced codependence.

i’m legit having a hard time telling whether this is a matter of lanque making himself out to be the victim ( as emotional vampires often do ) or the very real possibility that he honest to god was the victim of a horrible relationship that left him..... permanently scarred to the point he feels like all relationships are just SUPPOSED to be that way 

i’m gonna mainly use language that points towards the latter despite the fact that i honestly believe the more obscure and difficult to explain possibility that this is him trying to put himself in the shoes of someone he treated like garbage ( since idk i feel like he’s really good at recognizing and understanding peoples’ emotions, just not so much feeling them himself )

talking about it as if he were actually the victim just makes this a lot easier to analyze

lanque didn’t see this person as such a central figure when he was in the relationship, or it’s possible that he simply didn’t realize how important they were to him. their godliness implies that this person was always above him, that it was a privilege to be graced with their presence alone.

this (reVile/Worship) shit in my mind reads very similar to one of the ten commandments saying ‘we must fear and love god’ or some shit like that, but it doesn’t quite fit. it’s highly probable that it just implies that the relationship walked on a very fine tightrope between kismesis and matesprit ugh i went so long without using homestuck terms i’m sad now.... anyways this is call back to that implication of choice i was talking about earlier that’s built on more immediately

NoW it, and You, are a traceless ghost, and I preoccupy myself With nothing but futile tasks of (RE)definition and (RE)interpretation and circuitous dWellings on that Which I understand eVen less noW.

SUPER obvious but the person in the relationship is gone and lanque doesn’t know what to do without them. goes over how it’s hard for him to tell whether this is a refining of his pre-existing personality or just a brand new one all together. again, a choice as to whether or not that’s how he wants to approach it

the path to this reinvention is brought about through a bunch of rebounds and new relationships, ‘circuitous dwellings’ implying he possibly stayed in some of them for too long and he honest to god has no idea why? like he wasn’t enjoying himself, he wasn’t really being reinvented. it solidifies that it was flat out a new definition as lanque is more or less going through the motions

than in the times When my Wonderings might’Ve been so easily ansWered With a question or a bite or a kiss, or eVen a single Word, spoken honestly.

STRANGE to me how this starts as if it continues the past sentence despite the fact that it DEFINITELY ends in a period i double checked

he also finds himself having a MUCH easier time following the motions than trying to internalize and understand this relationship. ‘wonderings’ being... pretty obviously just anxiety thoughts like you know how your brain just says things that aren’t true

and figuring out if they were would’ve been easy if he just said something or did something!!

usually i’d like to say that writers usually don’t do this without reason but despite the praises i constantly speak alone in my room about the endless array of implications in every other thing that comes out of lanque’s mouth i also know v is a fucking hack and a got damn terrible writer

some gremlin at 3am whispered in my ear in the middle of the night saying this is about a past relationship with bronya and i did have some points but bronya is too good so i’m going to tell that gremlin to go fuck himself

there were so many things they went through to try and get this to work, but it kind of just came up as an obviously fucked up mess. likely considering that it would’ve ended/ran its course a lot better if they didn’t even try getting together.

GOD there’s so much in this little piece the very fact that his object of affection’s voice and words alone leave him feeling that he literally has no room to speak. the stricture is like a noose around his neck if he talks out of turn, hence the frustration that he knows something his wrong but he simply isn’t allowed to say something.

until he gets his hand on that ‘meaningful tincture’. alcohol gives him the courage to speak up and defy that gospel, alluding to his dependence on drugs and why they’re so important to him! it’s a lifestyle he wouldn’t give up because he’d hate to be silenced again!

emphasizing that shit i was talking about earlier with could vs. should, lanque feels like the right thing to do is look back at this in scorn. he should despise this person he idolized so much and envy how easy it was for them to lock him in such a vulnerable position for so long yet here he is..... thinking about them again

these lines are pretty transparent. this was never resolved, there was never a proper conclusion to this relationship. they kind of just drifted apart, but lanque can take solace in the truth and completion of this poem. he makes peace with the fact that he acknowledges all of the problems in the relationship, and chooses to make them a part of him rather than something to just scowl and scoff at

just speaking in terms of the comic itself it honestly didnt do much for me by just reading it . like yeah vriska helped me come to terms with being a lesbian but highkey that was more thanks to the fandom for being so vehemently for or against it (which resulted in me having to align myself with a VERY passionate group of people either way. god im glad i stanned vriska nd got to hear the right voices). the same thing goes for lgbthsa too, that group was only made in response to shitty fans, not the comic. 

but yknow like. embracing my sexuality and finding a wonderful longterm friend group are HUGE deals for me and regardless of whether or not i like it the homestuck fandom (and thus homestuck itself) WAS a factor in building that.

thinking about it now thats probably why the epilogue felt so fucking maliciously bad; it told a "story" of how this closely knit friend group fell to shit so quickly and how love/sexuality is at best meaningless and at worst destructive. idk about you shelby but that was the worst betrayal ive ever experienced in my life.

id rather not get into the whole blame game of whether or not repeatedly putting my faith in homestuck was a stupid idea bc it usually just makes me depressed. the critical part of me says i shouldve seen it coming, considering all the bullshit that stemmed from troll call/friendsim (mainly talking about lanque but also marvus and elwurd lole), whatpumpkins abysmal communication, and to an extent even act 1 of hiveswap misleading us with xefros and dammeks relationship. the part of me that happens to enjoy enjoying things says that i should just give it a chance and just let the questionable parts fly. basically i have two wolves inside me and im a poor gay mentally ill minor that they keep bullying.

like . im not gonna get on my moral high horse nd say shit like "oh homestuck is so bad bc its horribly racist/ableist and vaguely lgbtphobic if you squint" bc lets be real half the shit im into is NOT any better  . that being said the bad parts of it are just so fucking exhausting and it just seems like theyre always getting more and more concentrated with shittiness and its fucking ALWAYS intentional for the sake of "irony" or "tragedy" or whatever excuse the writers wanna pull out of their ass for being sadistic.

Lanque...why?

I wanna start off by saying three (3) things. 

1. I am feeling much better now.

2. A few months ago, back in July maybe, I had a dream that I was still in high school (yikes!) and I had just moved to a new school (double yikes!) and Lanque went there for some reason and he was also the only troll there. Anyway he was very nice but all his friends called him “fingers in his ass Lanque.” Not kidding about this dream btw! Anyway I just wanna say r.i.p. to that perception of Lanque.

3. I wanna give a shout out to Diemen “I love putting drugs on my wiener” Xicali

This is gonna be an incredibly long post so I’m putting the rest under a cut. 

So where do I even fucking begin. 

I’ll start with Lanque’s life as a character, not his life within the canon of Hiveswap. 

As we all know, Lanque’s design was leaked long before his official appearance in the trollcall. A lot of people thought he was a butch lesbian mostly because of his resemblance to Sailor Uranus who was a lesbian in the original Japanese dub of Sailor Moon and apparently he looked like a character from Utena but idk anything about Utena. 

As we all know after Lanque’s official debut he was revealed to be a transgender man by infamous incest-shipping shithead Cohen Edenfield, (and one other person who idk anything about so I’m leaving them out of this) who also wrote Hiveswap and may I remind everyone that Dammek and Xefros’ relationship was marketed as wholesome and sincerely friendly and later it was revealed to be abusive. All I’m saying is that there’s a pattern here! 

Need I also remind everyone* that after Cohen revealed that he shipped incest it provoked a trauma episode in someone who was formerly a big name homestuck blogger on here and they had to leave the site for months for their own safety. Shit like this does affect people, it’s almost 2019 and we should all have the mind to think about how our words and actions affect others.

Now I’m not trans so I’m not gonna speak too much on this but personally I don’t think they intended for Lanque to be trans but rather what happened was they seen that the transmale community latched onto him and confirmed him as trans because of that. After all the friendsims have been taking cues from the fans (Galora becoming canon is a major example along with Amisia and Chahut being friends). It feels like a mean spirited trick and I can only imagine how shitty it felt for transgender men and boys who were hoping Lanque would be an actually decent person.

Onto the “good” route. 

I don’t even consider this route to be Lanque’s route. It’s a sequel to Lynera’s route. I don’t mind this because I’m always happy to see Lynera but wow I wish I had seen her under better circumstances. 

I’ve seen some people saying that the flower crown Lanque is wholly different from the Lanque from the other two routes but I disagree. It’s well known that abusive people often seem very charming and kind at first. In general, if someone is too charming, too kind, and seems too good to be true then they probably are.

The whole reason Lynera asks MSPA reader to go with her to the party is because she’s scared of Lanque. She fucking admits it to his face in a fit of anxiety. Which is to say that Lanque is an asshole in all three endings, we just see it to varying degrees. Also Lanque’s poem sucks.

As far as the other two endings, what can I possibly say? What can I fucking possibly say? Honestly, what can I say? I’m speechless at what happened. As soon as Lanque called Lynera a bitch tears welled up in my eyes and I only halfway succeeded at holding them back. When men call women bitches it comes from such a vitriolic place and even though the friendsims have no voice acting I could practically hear the hatred in Lanque’s voice. 

There’s really nothing else to say about those two endings.

It’s interesting to note that much of the dialogue in Lanque’s route is very tongue in cheek and breaks the fourth wall (”What about you? Oh I’m not real” “I mean I’ve had feelings for a girl before so it’d be really problematic if I liked a boy now.”) 

And the reason I bring this up is because of that last quote. Literally what the fuck. What was the point of that. Best case scenario is that everyone ignores it and moves on but because I’m typing this right now we all know that’s not the case. Literally all this line is going to do is promote tension between lesbians and bisexual women. It feels very intentional and very much like a jab at how lesbians and bi women seemingly can’t get along. It’s insidious. If someone thinks of Lynera as bi then that’s cool I honestly don’t care but her interactions with Lanque shouldn’t be used to justify that. Here’s why.

1. She outright admits she’s SCARED of him. She admits this in a fit of anxiety where she accidentally reveals her true feelings. IF she did have a crush on Lanque she wouldn’t have said “and I’m scared of you” she would’ve said “and I secretly have a crush on you and I’m scared of looking stupid in front of you.”

Also it’s literally feminism 101 to listen to people when they express disinterest. It’s also feminism 101 to not call people sluts as shorthand for “provocatively dressed” or “scantily clad” but that happens in this route too so whatever.

2. When Lanque starts coming onto Lynera the reader states that they think she’s not into it. Yes you can be flustered around a crush but that should mean that you have butterflies in your stomach and are scared of making a fool of yourself in front of them not that you are literally fucking scared. 

So, how could Lanque have been better?

Hear me out. In his original trollcall card, it says he “still has a livechurnal” (read: livejournal). So they could have made him super behind the times technology wise. Maybe they could’ve shown him having a busted old computer that still runs Windows XP because hey, it still works. Maybe his main pastime is playing minesweeper or virtual solitaire. Maybe he doesn’t even have a smartphone. The plot of his route could’ve been that his old computer finally breaks and he has to get a new one. Also, have him talk a bit about being trans and hire a trans sensitivity reader to make sure everything makes sense and isn’t offensive. 

Also, there is literally no reason for Lanque to be so shitty. The reason why Vriska and even Gamzee to an extent are beloved characters is because they have a motive to o horrible things. Vriska was groomed to be a child soldier and Gamzee was a victim of child neglect. Lanque has none of this.

I’m also very worried for Wanshi and I hope she never finds out how terrible Lanque can be. 

Also, fun fact: apparently Livejournal is very popular in Russia. According to Wikipedia, Livejournal is the largest social media site on the Russian speaking portion of the internet, and half of Livejournal’s userbase is from Russia. The more you know!

I really liked Lanque’s Route in Friendsim, especially the “problematic” endings

Discourse and Spoilers, don’t read if you’re just looking for rage fuel. Or do. You control your own actions, and as long as you take responsibility for them everything will be Gucci. We good? We good.

Fight me if you want, but I’m putting it out there. I am happy to have a character who is trans, but who also has other elements to their personality even if they aren’t innocent. Yeah he’s got flaws, so does everyone else. Alternia is an alien planet with a culture is clearly different from ours, and that needs to be taken into account when considering what’s “problematic”. We’re talking about a planet of kids being raised by animals or by themselves on the streets into a classist society where they are allowed to murder each other for a physical trait that they can’t control somehow permissible but as soon as someone acts like an ass and tries to get some serious action it all goes to the fan? There’s a lot more “problematic” behavior we could be worrying about but we only hyper-focus it on Lanque because he’s canonically trans. Not every trans person is a good person, and characters who are trans shouldn’t be sheltered from some more tricky personalities to handle.

Idk man, I fuckin loved how V straight-up went out and said that you had to own up to looking at the problematic material. They called out the discourse, and after writing a route like the one they did for Marvus none of us should be surprised. The idea of it being Hussie is one I personally like, but even if it’s not I think it’s great that they don't hold back just because of what some fans think. They deal with characters like they’re actual people, meaning that some will be what others think is problematic. 

I’ve seen a lot of people upset at the fact that Lanque called out Lynera, and don't get me wrong that was hella uncalled for, but have y’all considered that maybe since we haven’t known Lynera for the last 2.43 sweeps (which is what, about 5 years? As long as a middle or high school career?) we don't know the kind of shit she’s been talking? It’s a bit unfair to judge yet, really. He doesn’t take her feelings into account, but then again was she taking his when she was saying shit?

Lanque is selfish, but dare I present the fact that he’s gotta sacrifice himself to the caverns when he goes off-planet? Maybe he’s projecting a bit when he is so crude calling out Lynera, holding on to the little bit of freedom he can still take before the trials. I dunno, food for thought.

If the issue is the sexual nature of this route I would like to remind people that the MC still has the ability to make choices for themselves, shown when they refuse the drugs even after Lanque tries to coerce them into it (good job protag I love you) and aren’t being forced to do it in a fashion similar to how Ardata controls them early on in the game. That, and after being denied Lanque doesn’t force the MC to do anything. Yeah he pokes fun, but he still stops. As for dancing, it's sexual, and the MC even states that they know what he wants and it might be more than they’re willing to give, but they go with it because it “feels good”. That’s kinda why people do things like this in the first place, isn’t it? And in the bedroom scene, again, the MC doesn’t say no because you as the player consented at the start to seeing the kind of material that the mature content warning covered such as sexual situations, language, and coercion. The decisions of the MC are executed based on the presumption that you followed the rules Ardata set when you first agreed to play through this version of the route(aka being of legal age to see mature content, being aware of the specific mature content contained, and knowing yourself well enough to know whether or not you could handle possibly problematic content). If you looked at the warnings and thought “I can’t handle some of these aspects” and yet continued on anyway, that’s on you. If you did it just to fuel your rage against Lanque, same deal. You could have played it safe, and even if you didn’t whether the MC and Lanque “pail” is up to you. You either consent by keeping your mouth shut like Lanque tells you too or you don’t by calling Bronya in to take care of the situation, which you get rewarded for by getting the good end. Even the Hiveswap team knows that there’ s only so far they can go reasonably, literally labeling the option as “Call in his mom. This has gotten problematic enough.” 

Yes, opting out of it does get you some grief, but it’s a reflection of the general crowd that wanted to see a “safe” character in a world that really doesn’t have them (not to mention the nicely added piece in there about bi erasure, especially since trolls have a default bi/pan sexuality but as soon as same-sex attraction is seen that concept is thrown out the window). They gave some people what they said they wanted, but not without a clear jab to say that they’re not doing it necessarily because they want to. And don’t worry folks! Us sinners who decided to go all the way and then get tossed aside got dunked on too (but hey alien coochie amirite). So teasing for both sides! Equality! Yay!

The team honestly had the right to pull this. We couldn’t even behave when we first learned his damn pronouns. TWO LETTERS threw everyone into an uproar. Let’s not forget that this is considered THE SECOND ROUND OF DISCOURSE and there will probably be more when he reappears in Hiveswap Act 2. They were damned either way they tried to go, so they did both. It’s a spiteful move, but the Homestuck fandom is one of the few places where that can be done thanks to the unique relationship between us as players and readers and community creators, and them as canon creators and the facilitators for the whole thing. 

I’m sick of flop/problematic/discourse culture. I’m sick of overused exclamation points!!! being used!!! to try and make a point more valid!!!! and right!!!! I’m sick of wig-snatching, tea-sipping, uwu-ing, social justice phrased-as-if-you’re-above-all-of-this bullshit being perpetuated as legitimate discussion. Yeah, I sound like a dick here and I’m being petty, and that’s the point. This isn’t so much satire as it is how I close I can get to posting something related to discourse. I’m not putting out a twenty-page analysis on how “bad” Lanque really is or isn’t until my hand is forced to give my evidence over and explain how I as someone who is over 18 with reasonably neutral views sees him not being that problematic compared to a lot of other content I’ve seen with similar themes and actions. I’ve played Dramatical Murder and Boyfriend to Death, and if you want problematic I dare you go play one of those games.

TL;DR Ardata warned you, everyone complaining about how problematic her party was is playing right into the hands of the team, and the only ones to blame here for the drama are ourselves.

If you get owned, fucking own it. And boy, we sure as hell did.

how many tweets have i had about how conflicting his nature is???? like 50????? god there’s a lot of things that annoy me about him but to pick one out i think it’s the fact that he’s so god damn hard to read. he says shit that makes it sound like he’s self-aware every now and again but i can’t tell if it’s to make him appear more credible or to garner pity out of anyone that’s willing to listen.

mallanque isn’t a good ship! the only thing they really have in common is the fact that mc is a little gay for them and they both REALLY don’t wanna be sent offworld but that could be said about most of the young adult characters in hiveswap tbh i have no fucking clue where it came from

also finding the balance between “i care you” and “i’m gonna treat you like shit” i do not understand what goes through lanque’s head especially since his wishy-washy behavior is so deliberate when from my understanding that’s not usually the case? idk tell me i’m wrong i’d be happy to hear it this shit is just difficult i’m bad at understanding with people

i mean i wouldn’t say we’re THAT similar, but i wouldn’t say we’re that different either. we’re both pretty blunt and honest with people to the point that it sometimes hurts others, the only difference being the pain lanque causes is very deliberate while i’m honest to god just really stupid and i try to apologize if i catch it too late or someone tells me i fucked up ( please for the love of god tell me if i fuck up it’s really hard for me to tell sometimes )

neither of us really care what people think about us? while lanque takes it to the extreme and is, again, very deliberate with getting people to hate him i just go between “i hate most people anyways” and “i just don’t wanna come across as an asshole”

we have some similarities i wouldn’t say we’re the Same Person though

favorite thing about them - can I just say everything? cause I truly love him so much. he’s been the literal reason why I got into Hiveswap in the first place and his route was worth the wait……. I love his design, I love his softer side, I love his poetry, I love his sharp tounge, I love that he’s an asshole, I love how confident he was and how he just enjoys being himself. I just love how he’s such a complex character, he’s amazing…….

favorite thing about them - honestly……..his Friendsim came out in the right time for me. I remember that I was constantly exhausted, sad, disappointed or overwork and when I tried to turn to my faves for comfort, I only saw people making fun of them. I didn’t expect to love Marvus so much but I really did. I played his route and I just felt so happy. like a character who’s hot, who’s an asshole but who can be caring and intelligent. who could say so many long amazing monologues and who surprised me with how thoughtful he was. who’s route made me feel so satisfied and I loved spending time with him. he was so right up my alley, he just came to me in the right place and right time

favorite thing about them - I really didn’t expect to love him as much as I do. but before playing his route I thought that he was very underappreciated and wanted to give him a try. when I first played he didn’t dazzle me or anything but he couldn’t leave my mind. I was just so interested with everything he represented. the fact that he represented all  trolls who can’t be themselves. and god, the symbolism with him is fantastic. like his emu lusus? or the fact that his name means Icarus? it was so amazing for me. and generally he’s just so upbeat and lovable, he’s fun to be around….it really tug my heartstring how he can’t be true to himself and I want to see him accept himself. goddamn he deserves so much
