Obvious Disclaimer that this is not about any specific anon in particular, not about OTNF themself, but that my following rant might *slightly* punch down on people who ARE, well, older than net fics are.
But my honest opinion is that I really donāt like it when us old heads tend to sortaā¦talk down to? āAdultsplainā, if thatās even a thing? To The Gen Zs, by being like ādamn kids! back in my day we never used our real name or posted selfies or posted about our personal life at all!ā Donāt get me wrong, Iām one of those people who never posted the real me ā but not because I was anonymous and cared about online safety, because I was a liar š That being said, there ARE older people who definitely over-shared or ādoxxedā themselves and still do, and thereās younger people who donāt!
I also feel like being āha, these stupid KIDS who post about their FANDOM LIFE on TIK TOCK under their REAL NAME AND FACE where IRLS CAN SEE THEM, how STUPIDā is not doing anyone any favors. Is that, technically, a smart thing for kids to do? No. Has it become normalized? Yes. And does that suck for people who might be bullied or outed or whatever cuz they genuinely are dumb and donāt know better and then someone they donāt like sees their stuff? Yes.
We all talk about how thereās no more kids spaces on the internet and how thatās a shame, but then five seconds later weāll reblog that one āAt any time Iām at risk of seeing a 14 year olds opinion and thatās why I hate it hereā post. Thereās really so few kid spaces on the net now, thatās true. We should extend empathy and let the teens be obnoxious and pretentious in peace, rather than making it a point to āratioā or āroast them.ā Idk personally Iād be completely unbothered if some 14 year old insulted my fic or my ship or whatever. Iād just block and move on, no need to try to argue with them.
And also, not all kids are even pretentious or obnoxious! Iām not saying we all need to take the kids under our wings, but we should be careful about not hating them just for being in their teens years, you know?
Alsoā¦ telling a teenager to not post PII or not get into discourse or not have social media or whatever will NOT work the way you want it to š kids are by default a little bit oppositionally defiant so telling some rando teen to Get Off Your Lawn (blog) rather than just blocking them, will encourage said teen to Stay On Your Lawn.
I just hate how itās become normal for adults to talk down to teens online. I was harassed by adults online as a kid, then years and years and years later i went through my own āOlder Than Youā¢ļøāphase where I myself was a shit to teenagers, and I truly regret that so much. To this day I still need to make an effort to be careful. I saw on Twitter where an adult posted a DM from a 13 year old, mocking them. The DM said āIām 14 next year, can I follow you? Please donāt groom me.ā And the adult OP was laughing at how stupid the dm was. A few years ago, I wouldāve been one of the people retweeting that and rolling my eyes at the child. Now im disgusted by the people who WERE laughing at them.
And again Iām obviously not saying we should be āniceā to the teenagers who mock us for our ships or who virtue signal too hard. But we also donāt need to make fun of their CARRDS or call them Puri-teens or rag on them just for being 17 or younger, yk?
--
Teens aren't 'puriteens' just for being young, dude. They have to also be puritanical bullies.
I find the stuff about real names hilarious because, actually, if you're really Internet Oldā¢, then you probably did use your real name... it was right there in your university e-mail address! Or your random early ISP address if your stepdad got it for you and thought the university format was the default. Thanks, stepdad.
I've done every single dumb thing from going to meet my internet pen pal at an Alice Cooper concert to flying to Ireland from Japan to stay with a fandom friend I'd never met without telling anyone where I was going and without a credit card or enough cash to flee if I had to. I remember sitting on the plane thinking "Man, this is such a CSI episode topic".
The really funny part was that despite what she'd said before I visited, we ran into each of her parents at different times and ended up going to a play courtesy of her uncle, and all of them were like "So how do you know each other?" and "But you'd met before, right? RIGHT?!"
The level of panopticon is horrifying now. Teens have my sympathy. That part really is worse, and I think it's driving an entire generation nuts and we're going to see even more shit about people wanting to run away and live in a cabin in the woods with no internet. But in general, I don't think we're so different.

How would you recommend interacting with a writer. If a story wasn't to your taste, or left you unsatisfied. But you still want to encourage, the writer. And show gratitude for the free entertainment?
Hi anon!
The short answer is, a simple "thanks for the fic!" or "thanks for sharing!" or even a few emojis will often suffice. You really don't have to let the writer know what you didn't like. At the end of the day, they're not writing the fic for you, and obiously not every story is going to satisfy everyone the same way--otherwise we'd all be the same and that would be a horrendously boring world to live in.
The long answer is probably unecessary, but I like to procrastinate on my WIPs talk š
There's a format of commenting that goes a little like this: "i don't normally like [X ship, X trope, the way X acts in canon, etc...], but i love the way you do it!!" And honestly I myself have used that before--mostly for tropes, though possibly for some ships as well. And on the surface, that's reads as a compliment. Personally, when ppl leave me that sort of comment, I'll usually interpret it as a compliment too--unless they're full on bashing the thing I love (which sometimes happens with people criticizing canon). And I do think it's INTENDED as a compliment. (That's how I've meant it, when I used it, so I do try my best to also interpret others in good faith.)
But it can also read as "I don't like this thing that you really like and I felt the need to tell you that." Honestly, I didn't even realize it would come across that way until I saw someone else point it out. And then...yeah, I started to notice the fics I get it on more (A lot lot lot of my ladrien fics, lmao.)
So I'm at a weird cross roads where I try not to use that anymore--unless it's with someone I'm fairly sure will understand how I mean it?because sometimes you do have more of a rapport with certain ppl and they'll understand what you mean--but I also don't want to say it's 100% a bad thing to say. I really do understand the intent.
Anyways, my point in bringing that up is that you never don't know what seemingly innocent "this wasn't quite to my taste" comment is going to read as an insult. And so if you really DO want to encourage said writer, I'd recommend sticking to the positives.
Another big thing that's important to me personally is: don't lie.
People have a tendancy to...I don't want to say be disingenuous, but certainly to exaggerate at times on the internet. You see that in the SCREAMING CRYING EATING GLASS types comments. And those are USUALLY sincere in the way that the emotions they convey are sincere. We as a society understand they're not literally eating glass but that they're in agony because the angst in the fic was so good and they want more. But then--something I've noticed--that sort of lingo has a way of slipping into a default response of sorts. And sometimes that makes me question if people really mean it?
This second thing is probably more of a personal thing than a response to your question, but since it's something I've been thinking about lately I hope you don't mind that I brought it up too. I really don't want people to lie to me about my writing.
Not even if it's "to be nice".
Maybe this is in part because I myself find it...difficult to be insincere with ppl, but I don't want false compliments--that's something I tell my friends too. If I write a trope or pairing you don't like? There's never any pressure to read it. I don't expect comments or kudos from anyone. And I'm not someone who in general believes people are insincere--that's not really fair to other people. But everyone has doubts at some point, and I feel like adding to that by straight up lying to make someone feel better just isn't the way to go? If you can't pick out a detail from the fic that you genuinely enjoyed, then maybe keep it to the simple "thanks for sharing!"
So, I guess the TLDR is: keep it short and sweet. keep it encouraging if that's really your goal. (and, if this ever happens to be in reference to something that I specifically have written? please don't feel like you HAVE to say anything at all)
Thanks for the ask!! Sorry I went on for so long LOLš

re: your post about quen glyphs... it's possible that the old focuses they found in the delta were formatted to work w/ simplified chinese characters... after all, the focuses are pre-zero dawn and would have been formatted to whatever the local ppl used, right? its even possible that being able to write and speak simplified chinese in addition to any other languages that a focus could be formatted to might be something on the diviners examinations alva talks about... (also the fascinating implications that the quen might have had the only record of other languages existing pre-apollo)
I'M SO SORRY IT TOOK ME SO LONG TO REPLY TO THIS. But I wanted to do it when I had time and brainpower to fully think it through š
So this ask is in relation to my tags on this gorgeous photo, where I remarked that it's weird for this beautiful Quen person to be carrying a tablet with what look like nonsense glyphs, when we know canonically that the Quen read and write English in the Roman alphabet. This is in contrast with the Oseram, for instance, who read and write English in their own original glyph system (as evidenced by Erend having trouble learning to read the Old Ones' glyphs).
For the purposes of this reply, I'm going to focus on Mandarin and Cantonese as the spoken forms of "Chinese" since they're the most familiar Chinese languages, and since Mandarin is considered the "standard" Chinese language. Before I start, I should also point out that there is no such thing as spoken simplified Chinese; "simplified Chinese" refers to a variation of written Chinese that's usually used to transcribe the spoken language of Mandarin, whereas "traditional Chinese" refers to the written variation of Chinese that's usually used to transcribe Cantonese.
ALSO, STRAP IN, BECAUSE WE'RE GOING TO GET A LITTLE NERDY HERE. I'm a speech-language pathologist by day (smut writer by night! š¹) and my favourite class in undergrad was a course about writing systems of the world, so I'm just giving advance warning that YOU ASKED FOR THIS. ššš
Okay, diving in now! That's a really good point re: the Focuses in the Great Delta -- it would make sense for many of the Focuses there to be set to display in Mandarin and/or Cantonese, and thus for the "glyph system" to be simplified or traditional Chinese characters, respectively. But if we're sticking to canon lore, the Quen don't speak other languages. There is a datapoint from Alva about this where she expresses some (VERY ACCURATE AND ADORABLE) disgust at Ted Faro for the loss of all languages except the Zero Dawn "default" language of English. If we're taking this at face value (and I see no reason why Alva would lie about this in her notes), then even if the Focuses were formatted to display Chinese characters, the Quen wouldn't be able to read them. This would also explain why being a Diviner is a rare and highly-prized role: it would probably be rare for the Focuses they found to be set in English, and those English Focuses would be even more prized and revered since they're interpretable.
Now, we might wonder why the Quen wouldn't be able to learn to speak Mandarin or Cantonese by deciphering the glyphs on a Chinese-formatted Focus. The problem is that the Quen have no spoken language to map the Chinese characters onto. Chinese characters are not an alphabet, and thus there's no one-to-one correspondence between a character and a sound or a sequence of sounds; instead, Chinese characters are largely morphographic, meaning they represent a unit of meaning rather than a sound or a sequence of sounds. The Quen might be able to figure out what some Chinese characters represent by comparing a single piece of text that's written both in Chinese and English, but they would not be able to figure out what the Chinese characters sound like.
Ah, but you might be wondering if the Quen could have figured out how to speak Mandarin/Cantonese by listening to audiorecordings or holovids in Mandarin/Cantonese and mapping them to transcripts written in Chinese, then comparing those Chinese transcripts to English transcripts of the same text? (Wait, YOU'RE NOT WONDERING THAT? SERIOUSLY?? I'm teasing. I'm clearly overthinking this.) I mean, yes, they could, but that would require you to have a piece of text in both English and Chinese that also has a corresponding holovid/audiorecording in Mandarin/Cantonese for that text, which... I mean, maybe I'm wrong, but that seems like a pretty big ask. Then again, if the Focuses have like a library of C-dramas with subtitles, then that could work???
But this brings me back to Alva's datapoint again. If all of the Diviners learned Mandarin/Cantonese for their exams, either Alva is being secretive about this in her own notes (seems implausible to me, she is not a disingenuous person), OR there is a faction of Quen Diviners above Alva's proverbial "pay grade" who are working on that. So that could be an interesting avenue for someone to explore in fic! Actually, the more I think about it, the more plausible it seems that there is some "upper class" of Diviners who are secretly working on restoring old languages and who get extra perks from the Imperial family for interpreting the most valuable texts. Okay, you got me, you talked me into it LOL.
But let's return now to my original cheeky remark re: the Quen glyphs as pictured in the game. This is a more detailed image of some Quen glyphs in Burning Shores:
Now, we can't say whether this piece of text is meant to be read top to bottom or whether it was pinned to the post sideways, but it looks to me from the brackets and the red lines (likely underlines) that it's posted sideways and is meant to be read either right-to-left or left-to-right. This does not look like Chinese characters, either simplified or traditional. On a superficial inspection, it looks to me more like the Tibetan syllabary, or maybe the Hebrew abjad, without actually being either of those. In the image I referred to at the beginning of this post, the glyphs look more like the Arabic abjad as it would be used to transcribe Farsi. In other words, the Quen glyphs as pictured in the DLC alone are inconsistent.
To be perfectly honest, I think that these Quen glyphs are a "game-ism": one of those things that's a visual element in the game that actually doesn't match up with the lore, similar to how Grudda is canonically from the Desert Clan but has Lowland tattoos. (If you've never noticed this, I implore you to use tearblast arrows to blow off all his armour until he's naked down to his underoos the next time you play LOL. Drakka would greatly approve.)
In short, I still adhere to the idea that the general Quen population read and write in English using the Roman alphabet, and that the Quen glyphs pictured in these images are visual nonsense (NO OFFENSE). If there are any Quen who speak and read in other languages, it would most likely be a secret faction of Diviners that Alva doesn't know about.
I hope this answer was satisfying and not fucking boring as hell BAHAHAH. Thank you for making me think about this, though! It also reminds of a mini-rant I have about Hekarro wanting the Tenakth to learn Carja glyphs that I should find some time to write out!
If anyone has further thoughts about this, feel free to comment/reblob/send me an ask or a message or whatever! ā¤ Also, forgive any typos, it's past 1AM when I'm writing this LMAO.

HEEEEY IT'S SEASONS OF DRABBLES TIME AGAIN!!!!!
Seasons of Drabbles just opened their fall fic exchange and I'm so excited!!! š I participated in their summer round and had so much fun!
Here's the link to their Dreamwidth blog for the full run down of rules and timeline, etc. Basically fandom/character nominations opened today. Drabbles will be due by November 9. All the steps in between are on their blog. Some of the rules/layout of the rules can be confusing (to me at least), so here's my own personal breakdown below.
Disclaimer: I am not a mod, and if I simplify some rules to the point of being inaccurate, then you should always default to what's listed on the Dreamwidth blog.
Note: You do not need a Dreamwidth account to participate. You only need an AO3 account.
ć°
What is this exchange???
Seasons of Drabbles is a multifandom fic exchange where you will be matched with someone on a specific character. The person you write for will not necessarily be the person who writes for you. You must write a fic to receive a fic, and my own personal rule is you should also comment on the fic you receive. I can't tell you how many times I read and commented on a drabble during the summer round only to be the only person who did. Like.... someone wrote you a fic! Let them know you appreciate it!!
The rounds are short because you are intended to only write a drabble! As in exactly 100 or 200 or 300 words, depending on if you're writing a single, double, or triple drabble. You can write longer fics, if they're divided up into 100/200/300 word sections, but as someone determined to once again read 300-400 fics before the author reveals, I beg you: please don't. š¬ Use this as a real challenge and experiment with the drabble format. I promise, it's fun!
Not sure what a story that short looks like?
Here's the link to the summer round's drabbles
Here's a link to my series page. If you scroll down, I have three Ghostbusters 2016 sets of drabbles.
How does it work? The rules were confusing/seemed too involved/stressed me out š„
It's actually easier than it seems, I promise!
Step 1: Choose which fandoms/characters you want to read or write for. Remember: you're not choosing ships, you are choosing characters. So make notes to yourself about which characters you're willing to write for vs only read. During sign up, you can specify ship preferences (amongst other things) on the fandoms you request. You cannot specify preferences for the fandoms you offer. You will have to do your best to fulfill any requests your recipient makes. So don't offer a character if there's a main ship with them that you can't stand. It's just safer that way.
Step 2: Check the taglist on AO3 -- Seasons of Drabbles uses the same list of nominations throughout the entire calendar year. So click the link and look up each of your fandoms/characters to see if they've already been nominated. If they're listed, you're golden! You don't have to do anything until sign ups on Oct 21. If they're not listed, you'll need to nominate them yourself using the "Nominate" button up at the top right.
(Sorry that mine already looks clicked on)
That will bring up the form to fill out with your nominations. You can do up to 10 fandoms and 10 characters per fandom. Start typing in the field and then wait for the AO3 results to come up to select the official tag. The mods aren't familiar with all fandoms, so we need to make this as easy as possible for them.
My example with The Sims is pictured above because YES I will be nominating Bob and Eliza Pancakes for the fall round. I think their drama would be so funny to read/write about š For some reason when screencapping, the character search result disappeared, but rest assured, AO3 did recognize Eliza Pancakes as already having a character tag. š
If your character does not pop up with an official tag or if you are nominating original works (which is allowed!! and was very fun for me to read during the last round!), I don't know how you fill out the form. Peruse the official rules and if you can't figure it out on your own, then I suggest commenting on the Nominations post to ask the mods. (Apologies, I do not know if you need a DW account to comment. You'll have to test that out for yourself.)
Step 3: When sign ups open next Monday on Oct 21, there will be a new form to fill out. There will be a top and bottom half that look pretty identical so read all the headers closely to make sure you're filling out the correct information. You will list what fandoms/characters you want to read and which ones you want to write. There will also be an extra drop down in both sections asking what length(s) of fics you want to request/offer. "Any" is also an option, just like "any" will be an option for character. Then finally, there's a free form text box with each fandom you request (not offer) where you can list prompts, topic or ship preferences, squicks and other no go's, etc. You can leave this as vague or detailed as you want. Whichever writer gets assigned to you will use this information to write your gift.
ć°
And then after that, it's just waiting for assignments š When you get your assignment through AO3, you will be able to see ALL of your giftee's fandoms and prompts, not just the one you were matched on, so if something else on their list sparks your interest, feel free to write it. Some people even say they allow for crossovers between their fandoms. There really is a huge variety of fics in this exchange!
Like other exchanges, there may be calls for pinch hitters. You can also write extra gifts for people. The full list of prompts will be available to peruse, so if you have time after finishing your assigned gift, don't be afraid to check it out. š
I'm not going to get into the details yet about how to post your fic on AO3 so that it fills the assignment and gets added to the Seasons of Drabbles collection. I was able to quickly google for answers to the questions I had during the summer round, but you can also message me here when the time comes if you need help :)
And.... I think that's it! Like I said, I had a blast with the summer round! I wrote three drabbles, including one for a new-to-me fandom, and I had a great experience reading through everyone else's entries -- and yes, I do mean everyone's, even if I didn't know the fandom. If you want more details about that or wondering why on earth I would do such a thing, you can read my recap here.
Hope to see you as a participant! š„°

Devlog #45
Tadah, here's a screencap of Griffin I made for a thing on twitter. :)
I've been dragging my feet on sprite/CG expression work, but I'm sure I'll get around to it soon... Weird how I can care so intimately about having expressive characters, yet dread the prospect of drawing it all myself!
On the narrative front, I'm at the point where I'm about halfway done with Dart's scene, and I'm just kinda figuring out what else to add before fully moving onto Jade. I hit this exact same point while drafting Griffin and Warden, so it's certainly part of the process by this point. e_e
I alsooo didddd go back and flesh out some content to Griffin's scene - most notably adding the option to "Give Griffin a rad high-five" and to ask about his relationship to another character in the worst way humanly possible:
"AreĀ youĀ boning?"
In other news, I spent a full day working on the game's GUI:
Starting with research on how AAA games create intuitive buttons/navigation menus. Most notably I've saved screencaps from this fantastic article comparing Doom and Dishonored. Some of yall may know that I do not have any education in UI/UX design, so I'm doing my best to study independently.
I put in some insensitive button states into the save screen.
Added a small a highlight border and glow to existing navigation buttons (seen here on the main menu button), to bring more attention to hovered states:
I FINALLYYYY implemented that text change option and can now freely switch between OpenDyslexic and OpenSans. Took several tries and crashes... bc I didn't put "-Regular" after the names.....
Adjusted the height of the choice buttons HOPEFULLY for the final time.
I linked the Options and Save menu screens together, so you can flip quickly between the two. This, combined with the new hover button highlights, combined with me deciding to rename half the buttons... meant I had to remake a lot of buttons... @_@ Probably would've been avoidable if I did things differently, but I survived.
I removed the player name/avatar from the title screen's options menu. The title screen exists independently of the player's playthroughs, which means the name/avatar will come up as "default" every time -- could confuse someone into thinking their data is corrupted or deleted. So, player name/avatar will now only appear when accessing options in-game.
Finally, in a strange bout of success-fueled inspiration, I made a functional mock-up for the logbook! The spacing isn't perfect, but it works. :o Scrolls smoothly and everything.
And since I've alluded to it so much, here's what the Options screen looks like right now:
Almost done. Mainly I'll want to switch out the default pink renpy bars, add in the icons Alice made, and work on designing the on/off buttons to be more intuitive/cool/animated. The functionality and formatting is all there, sans finishing touches.
(... Okay no I lied bc I haven't quite coded in the "hide CGs" button yet, but I will, I will. š That's the ONLY button that is just for show rn - I gotta figure out how the function will work with an eventual CG album, make sure those wires don't get crossed.)
Pffahh... okay that's enough. I might have done some other stuff but this is long enough as is. Since this update is delayed by a couple of days, I'm not sure if I wanna do next week's update on Tuesday as usual, or also delay that to give myself a full week... Ah well, we'll see!
I hope youāre all staying safe and keeping warm.
Much love,
Wudge.
PS personal note, I'm gonna try to update my language to use "need" less often - less "I need to [do XYZ]," more "I want to [do XYZ]," etc etc. Should be beneficial for my mental health.
