What we’re essentially asking is the question of pre-destination versus free will. Given that free will is one of the standard responses to the problem of evil, let’s take a (brief!) look at the Problem of Evil.

The Problem of Evil

The Problem of Evil is the logical contradiction that arises from the following axioms. If God is all of the following:

1.) omniscient - all-knowing

2.) omnipotent - all-powerful

3.) omni-benevolent - good

Then why does evil exist? If God is any of the two, but not the third, then the state of the world is perfectly explainable. An omniscient and omni-benevolent God knows everything and is good, but lacks the power to resolve the problem of evil. An omnipotent and omni-benevolent God is all powerful and good, but lacks the knowledge of all evil in the world - evil is capable of hiding. And an omniscient and omnipotent God that is NOT omni-benevolent means that God has deliberately created evil for Reasons.

(It is worth noting that the idea of God embodying all three of these axioms is a very Christian concept of God, but given that the character of Lucifer originated from John Milton’s famous Bible fanfic, Paradise Lost, it may be fair. Of course, Gaiman himself is Jewish and some Jewish thought tends to drop omniscience from the equation. We’ll come back to this, because if you have a God that can change, then God becomes much more interesting in a narrative structure.)

This is, as you can imagine, a logical contradiction that has fascinated theologians and philosophers for centuries, but the most popular resolution within popular culture is the concept of free will. In other words, evil is our fault, not God’s. The ability to choose gives the very concepts of good and evil relevance, in fact.

Free will has plenty of problems, but its issues are irrelevant in terms of this discussion because we are dealing with a fictional universe, where free will and the axiom of choice work very well within drama. And within the universe of Lucifer, free will exists. Choice is a central theme because everyone in the universe self-actualizes to an extent.

Humanity chooses their final destination based on their own subconscious judgment (God is completely uninvolved). Angels literally control their own appearances and abilities subconsciously. Lucifer’s devil face (and later his entire transformation) are manifestations of his own self-hatred while Amenadiel’s fall and the restoration of his wings (but not his ability to slow time) are based on his judgment of his own virtue and his connection to humanity.

So, let’s wrap this back around to the big question - is the universe predestined or not? Do our choices actually matter or does God have a plan and your choices are an illusion?

Predestination

One of the things that makes 1x09 work so well as an episode is watching patterns come together. 

A parent without a child tries to reconnect with and guide the child of his lost friends, who has gotten himself into trouble. That leads him into Lucifer’s bar - where Lucifer just happens to have recently gotten involved with investigating homicides. Once Lucifer’s involved, Chloe gets involved when they find the head of the program murdered, leading them to Conor and the Spider’s operation. Which leads to Conor being literally put in the middle of two men fighting over him and being forced to choose between their very different visions of his life. Father Frank then chooses to put himself between Conor and the Spider, getting himself shot, which leads to him dying in Lucifer’s arms.

We know that at one point God had a plan - Lucifer confirms that. In fact, it’s the central tenant of Father Frank’s faith. The idea that all of his pain and loss had a purpose behind it is how he deals with grief and finds meaning in a loss that can and has broken people before him.

It’s Lucifer who points out the obvious - that killing a young girl and two loving parents in service of the Plan is cruel. It leaves two people behind who are broken in the exact same way, but who deal with it very differently. Frank finds faith and turns to helping others where Conor becomes extremely vulnerable and prey to the predators of the world like the Spider in his own search for a place to belong.

Perhaps that does a good job of illustrating the different choices available to people, but how much of a choice did Conor actually have? He was a child without the coping processes of an adult, grew up in foster care, clearly bounced around the system and so desperate for love and affection while also mistrusting healthier expressions of those emotions due to being (unwillingly) abandoned by his dead parents that he was drawn into a criminal drug operation in an attempt to find his place.

if we believe that this was all a plan, then both Frank and Conor’s choices were illusions. Yes, they made choices, but their circumstances and environments shaped those choices.

In a system like this, think of the choices people make in terms of a physics problem. If you’re looking at a single atom, it is chaotic - able to go in any direction. But, put that atom in a sea of other atoms, in various environments and you can start to predict with reasonable accuracy how the group is going to behave - which other atoms it might bond to, how it’ll react under pressure or with the introduction of other elements. Patterns begin to emerge. 

Lucifer had just put out a fragile tendril of friendship before watching it be cut away with Frank’s tragic fate, his friend’s last words suggesting that all of this was to simply put Frank in Lucifer’s path for…what reason? To remind Lucifer that his Father has a plan? That his Father isn’t done with him, to imply that all of Lucifer’s suffering up to this point has a Purpose? A role he is being shaped for?

Lucifer already knows this. Lucifer has already rebelled against this. Frank’s fate is just more evidence to Lucifer that his Father’s plans are needlessly cruel and manipulative.

And, honestly, Lucifer has a point.

Can God Change?

Earlier, we talked about the Problem of Evil. However, the role of God changes dramatically if we drop one of the axioms - and I would argue that Gaiman, as well as the Lucifer show runners have done just that.

God is, frankly, far more interesting if He is capable of change, just like our main characters. The biggest issue with the traditional Christian interpretation of God is His very perfection, which makes Him utterly static. A perfect deity is, well...boring. Especially within the context of a narrative.

At it’s heart, Lucifer is a show about family - the families we come from that shape us and the families that we create around us - and how the two can and do merge.

Imagine the frustration of a God who loves His son, has all the power in the world to effect change - but doesn’t know how best to employ it? Who didn’t see Lucifer’s rebellion coming and reacted out of anger or frustration or even sorrow, possibly understanding how things went so wrong in retrospect, but unsure how to reach out to a child who was holding that much anger and self hatred? How would that parent try to help their child? Do you give them space? Do you actively punish them so that they understand the consequences of their actions? Do you passively stand back and let the consequences of their actions play out so that they learn and grow?

Given how subtle divine intervention is within the show, it’s reasonable to assume that God is mostly trying to stay out of things - after all, why bother with free will if you don’t let people exercise it?

Free Will

We know that choice is important within the universe of Lucifer. So, if God is looking at humanity like a social physics problem, then He probably has a pretty decent idea of how general patterns will pan out and the divine intervention, as such, is much more subtle. Father Frank, after all, has a number of different ways he can attempt to help Conor, but he chooses to go to Lucifer Morningstar, a club owner known to grant favors.

Father Frank is a priest - presumably he believes in the Devil. He may not believe, when he first steps foot in LUX, that the man in front of him is the actual, literal Devil, but the absurdity is enough to rope Lucifer in. So, where did Father Frank get the idea to go to the Devil for help?

Well, we’ve got the luxury of having an episode told with God narrating it, so let’s briefly poke the bear that is 3x26 - Once Upon A Time.

Aside from arranging for Chloe to be born, God is very specific that He is NOT controlling the situation. In fact, in order to run this little experiment, He only makes one, tiny change. He moves a bullet a few inches to the left and John Decker survives the assassination disguised as a robbery.

The central question of 3x26 is, “Did God’s plan of putting Chloe in Lucifer’s path actually change anything?” And the answer at the end of the episode is a fairly clear ‘no.’

“And some, no matter how you shake things up, are drawn to the same people, the same passions. So all seems to have ended well, does that mean I never should have manipulated things to begin with? I have a better question: wouldn’t you, in my shoes? After all - a parent just wants what’s best for their child.”

Who knows whether God planted the idea or not, but a priest walks into a bar to ask the Devil for help.

Once that happens, the patterns continue to play out, but there is room for each individual choice to matter. Conor could have chosen to shoot Father Frank and prove his loyalty. Father Frank could have chosen to try to pull Conor out of the way of the bullet instead of stepping in front of it.

But they make the choices they make and in the end, Father Frank again lies dying in Lucifer’s arms, insisting that his choice was worth it because Lucifer’s Father has a plan - but the subtext has changed. Father Frank dies believing his death will serve the Purpose of showing two lost sons that they are loved.

The Messenger

The parallels here are not subtle. Conor and Father Frank are very much a reflection of Lucifer and his Father. Except that, in Lucifer’s eyes, Father Frank is fighting for Conor whereas he was abandoned. This episode is the first time that Lucifer is asked to question that basic assumption about his life.

Father Frank: “God has faith in him. In all of us. Even in our darkest moments.”

Lucifer: “You really believe that, don’t you?”

Father Frank: “I do. Why don’t you?”

Lucifer: (looking visibly uncomfortable) “Because he didn’t have faith in me.”

Father Frank: “I felt that way once too. But now I know, deep in my heart. God has a plan for me.”

Lucifer: (scoffing) “Oh his plan for me was quite clear.”

Father Frank. “How do you know it’s finished?”

From Lucifer’s perspective, that question should be terrifying. His Father’s plan has already gotten him sent to Hell to rule over the damned for all eternity. What more could God want from Lucifer?

I would argue that what God wants is quite simply what’s best for his son - his child who believes so throughly that he is damned that he’s manifested a completely different, horrific face to punish himself with. Lucifer doesn’t believe in second chances. So He shows him one.

Conor chooses not to kill Father Frank, twice. He chooses to stand against the Spider. Those choices cost him, but the cost of his actions doesn’t negate their importance. In the wake of losing Father Frank, Conor again chooses to help the police, taking down a drug operation that was preying on vulnerable children inside that foster center, which will presumably make L.A. a slightly safer place for those kids.

Chloe sees the potential for good in the consequences of this night, and she speculates about that to Lucifer. But Lucifer’s in no state of mind to hear it. What he does do, however, is significant. He allows himself to feel pain and, rather than numbing it, as we see him fail to light the cigarette, he yells at his Father.

The dialogue is one sided and angry, but it’s implied that this may be the first time Lucifer has spoken to his Father since he became the Lord of Hell. This is a relationship that had been depicted as broken beyond all hope of repair, both sides having shut down communication with the other.

Father Frank’s sacrifice changes all of that. Yes, the priest gets to fulfill his desire of helping Conor make a different choice, a better choice. But he’s also a messenger. The subtext becomes less, “you are being shaped for a role” and more “your Father still loves you and has never given up on you.”

What if what God’s initial goal was to simply get his son to talk to him?  

Redemption

The next episode, Pops, is very revealing when it comes to Lucifer’s internalized guilt that he won’t be able to begin voicing until the end of season three. The things he says about Junior’s relationship to his father again parallel his own estrangement from his Father.

Anne: “That ungrateful kid was given everything and he threw it all away. But it didn’t matter. He was still the favorite.” (emphasis mine)

Lucifer: “Because he was worthy of his father’s love! And he had a chance at redemption until you ruined it!”

This exchange indicates that God’s desire for reconciliation is mutual. That doesn’t mean that either party wants to go back to the way things were - Lucifer doesn’t want to change who he is or what he’s done, whether he regrets it or not. That’s impossible and he knows it. But there is a desire to move forward, and for Lucifer putting the past behind him is very much about leaving Hell and it’s throne firmly behind.

But getting to that point of reconciliation is already going to be hard enough without Lucifer trapped in the same spiral of anger, guilt and pride.

So God reaches out, using a priest who has a shocking amount in common with Lucifer, to try to begin mending the breach. The consequences play out far beyond the end of 1x09. In the climax of Season 1, as Lucifer lies on the hangar floor, bleeding out, we see him open a dialogue again with his Father. Yes, he’s desperate, but would he have believed that asking his Father might do anything if it hadn’t been for Father Frank?

And this time, we see God answer. When Lucifer is desperate for help, his Father doesn’t abandon him. Instead, he gives him an opportunity. Moreover, he gives him an opportunity on Lucifer’s terms. The only way his son knows to ask for help is to offer a deal - sacrificing Lucifer’s own agency in exchange for Chloe’s life.

Yes, it’s a sign of Lucifer’s growth over the season, but it’s made clear that Lucifer going back to Hell was always a much more likely possibility than Lucifer himself ever wanted to accept. Lucifer came to earth with multiple backup options to get back to Hell - first Amenadiel, who will happily drag Lucifer back. Then the wings, which he burns and finally the Pentecostal coin that we see Lucifer playing with over and over again. Lucifer has planted the seeds of his own escape from Hell.

God’s intervention is subtle. Again, all He does is make a slight change - He moves the Pentecostal coin from Malcom’s possession back to Lucifer’s. The biggest difference is that He lets Lucifer know that he’s involved at all.

This is a headcanon I say I’m gonna write properly but I won’t probably. So here you get the unedited me talking on Discord headcanon.

Archer was way less bitter when younger, he spoke with way less sarcasm and dark humor. Instead, he believed himself to be near invincible, untouchable. That he could attain success with little effort. He knew how to take social cues to make someone feel secure and in trust. He was very soft spoken, but gave a lot of humoristic replies and bit of sass to his peers to retain respect. He was outgoing and was the kind of (seemingly) extroverted guy who knew how to notice a smarter looking introverted and show them he noticed them―this brought Archer loyalty from both outcasts and more popular folks.

Truth was that he was actually an introvert himself and hated being surrounded by people. But he was too young and dead inside/numb to following those type of social gain instructions that he never noticed. Even asked about his suicide attempt during college post his 20 years anniversary, he had no idea what to say.

On the darker side, after school, Archer was pushed to gradually numb himself to others’ pain. He was already prominent to sociopathy and narcissism due to his social manipulation and focus on personal gain, but it was his upbringing that tied the knot. He would beat people who could fight back, then people who were helpless, then watch mostly teens his age and children being abused in front of others like an expensive show.

At the same time, there were his frowned at sexual preferences of ephebophilia (a primary sexual interest towards mid-to-late teens, around 15 to 19, though I personally range Archer from 13 to 17). At first he thought he just liked his peers, but the more he aged, the more he didn’t feel anything for anyone in senior high school and college.

Because he believed himself to be straight, he naturally drew the conclusion that just like most guys like a younger female partner, he was doing the same.

The problem was with boys, there was on way for him to really know what was going on; he only was shown examples of boys being abused in front of him, and even then this was committed primarily by women. Archer thought that past the initial disgust, fear and indifference, he developed a finer taste, just like a finer taste in wine.

After knowing boys and gaining their trust, Archer would show a lot of predatory behaviour. The issue was that nobody could really notice, because he was himself young, went on dates (and was active in talking about it so). And on top of that, boys loved him. The preference towards being around boys instead of girls was again never questioned because “Oh boys hang out with boys that’s normal”.

He never outright raped and younger boy. He was doting and soft, which didn’t make any kid question themselves because they were taught how to fear way older men who would try to hurt them. Archer brought them love, attention, lecturing, mentorship and gifts. How he got his way was some inappropriate touching here and there, or way too much talk r-rated subjects. In terms of tension, he was very much like how he seems so constantly flirty like with Hœnir in the present without actual sexual penetration or kissing. At the same time, he didn’t do anything he believed would seem questionable were as the kid would tell his guardians.

Those preferences still show after his trip to prison. Atop of still being flirty, when looking at adults, he at I’d say 90% feels strongly attracted to those with smooth skin, younger features and light coloured hair.

However, an issue Archer meets is that just like some people with those type of sexual interests, his predatory tendencies bring their own fantasies (though they are what they are―fantasies, which he never deeply thought about), and when meeting someone as an adult when he knew them as a kid, Archer strongly tends to only see “This is the kid I met, he is exactly the same only in a bigger body”. It brings him to “start where they left off” and get way touchier than he is with the average person. Like a longing lover. And denies that person of any adult-like characteristics they might have (it doesn’t help that his dominant attitude make people more submissive, have a hard time asserting themselves). To see someone like that as a real man/woman, he kinda needs a pretty big slap. That slap comes with two conclusions: violence or a plea  to still like him.

That was all you could feel as your eyes fluttered open and your brain tip-toed into consciousness. Your eyes were tired from the endless tears they released the night before. Your chest felt heavy with pain and sorrow. You wished you could switch your brain off for a day and not think about the things that had led to you feeling so empty and broken.

Reluctantly, you sat upright, swinging your legs over the edge of the bed. You gathered your tangled locks and threw them into a messy bun atop your head. Clad in only pajama shorts and a tank top, you shuffled out of the warm comfort of your bedroom and out to the hallway.

Your brother had died two days ago. Your phone was immediately blown up with unread messages and ignored calls from everyone you knew but never spoke to, offering condolences and inquiring if you were alright.

Living on the Southside, it was expected that your home life wasn't great. You and your mother rarely got along, so when you turned sixteen, you got a part time job that paid you enough for a cheap, run down apartment. Your mother approved of the move and you'd barely spoken since.

Now, you'd have to meet with her to discuss funeral arrangements for the one person in your family who'd always been there for you. But you couldn't deal with it today. Today was a day of wallowing - sitting alone in the dark with movies and the small amount of food in your kitchen.

A knock sounded at your front door. Someone had a different idea of how you should spend your mourning.

Exhaling a sigh, you released the deadbolt and peeled open the door. Your puffy eyes widened at the sight that met you.

On your porch stood Jughead, Toni, Sweet Pea, and Fangs, each carrying some sort of contribution.

"What are you doing here?" you questioned, cringing at how cracked and raw your voice had become.

The girl offered you a small, sympathetic smile. "We heard what happened. We're here to cheer you up."

She sauntered into your apartment with her arms full of your favorite movies. Behind her entered Sweet Pea and Fangs, each of them holding bags of food.

Then entered Jughead, holding a carrying tray of coffee cups. Smiling softly, he handed you the one which had your name scribbled on the side.

"(F/drink) with extra flavor," he stated.

"Thanks, Jug," you whispered, accepting the drink before closing the door.

You weren't a Serpent - you weren't even related to a Serpent. But you'd known the teens who had become Serpents since you were children, and you'd come to know Jughead when he moved to Southside High. They were your best friends, but you hadn't even told any of them about your brother.

It wasn't a matter of weakness or worrying that they wouldn't understand. You knew them better than that. But you often felt like a burden, thanks to how you'd been raised, and you didn't want to go whining to your friends when they had their own issues to deal with.

"You guys didn't have to do this," you murmured as they set up the food on the coffee table in the living room.

"What are you talking about?" Toni countered. "You're upset. Rightfully so. Why wouldn't we be here?"

"I... It's just..." You crossed your arms as you often did when you weren't sure what to say. "You know you're not obligated, right? I love that you're all here, but you don't have to be."

Your words clicked in the brunette's mind and she wrapped you in a hug. Your chest clenched at the contact - no one had hugged you since you'd found out about your brother. You hadn't realized how much you needed it.

"(Y/n), you're an honorary Serpent. We take care of our own. Wherever you need us, call. We'll be here."

You nodded, burying your head in her shoulder. You stood that way for a moment, the three boys watching, unsure of how to respond, before Toni let go and smiled at you. She pushed you towards the couchwhere Jughead grasped your hand and pulled you down to sit between him and Sweet Pea. Your heart raced at the close proximity, and you hesitantly rested your head on the beanie-clad boy's shoulder. His arm wrapped around you immediately, holding you close and secure.

Toni stood before you, a smirk on her plump lips as she held up a familiar DVD case. Your eyes lit up as you read the title of your all-time favorite movie.

"I figured we'd start with this," she stated, putting the disc in the tray of your DVD player. She then sat on the floor in front of you, leaning back against your legs.

"Dig in, (Y/n)," Jughead told you, gesturing to the bags of takeout. "We got your favorites."

"We went to three different shops because Jughead insisted on getting you (F/dessert)," Toni teased, knowing without looking at him that a blush was dusting across his cheeks.

A giggle escaped your lips. "Thank you, Jug."

His lips tweaked into a soft smile. "Anything for you."

Four movies later, it was dark out, and three of your four friends had fallen asleep. Toni was lying on the floor, Sweet Pea leaned against his side of the couch, and Fangs had fallen off the couch shortly after dozing off, leaving only you and Jughead to be engaged in the film.

But the raven-haired boy's focus wasn't on the movie. His stormy grey eyes were fixed on you, observing how your whole demeanor had changed since they first arrived that morning. You were calmer, healthier, and, dare he say it, happier. They had fulfilled their goal of cheering you up, but one thing still gnawed at the back of Jughead's mind.

"(Y/n)," he whispered, careful not to wake his comrades.

You turned to look up at him. "Hmm?"

He tried to form a sentence, but his articulate literature skills seemed to evaporate as he gazed into your (E/c) eyes. Instead, his hand found your jaw, holding your gaze on him. He leaned in, tilting his head and closing his eyes before brushing his lips against yours. You stifled a gasp as your own eyes fluttered closed and you returned the kiss. If you were honest with yourself (and Toni, because she figured it out even before you did), you'd been crushing on Jughead since the day he transferred to Southside. You never imagined he could possibly return the attraction.

"I really like you," he whispered against your lips.

"I like you too," you managed to respond, your voice shaky with nerves.

He grinned, kissing you soft and quietly. He pulled you closer against his chest, watching the rest of the movie with a genuine smile on his lips.

“Can’t we wait until Sakura wakes up?”

“No,” Karin snaps. “This baby is more important than any of us thought. I’m going to do everything in my power to make sure she’s strong enough to survive.” When Naruto continues to falter, Karin’s gentles her tone a bit. “You know how important Sakura is to me. “I couldn’t…”

“After everything?” he challenges. “All this time, you’ve trusted me with trying to save the life of our enemy.” Karin frowns in confusion at this, but a warning look from Naruto tells her he’ll explain it later. “I kept secret what I knew about you and Sasuke once I found out, even though I…And after all this time I’ve been trying to keep Tsunade from losing her patience and attacking the Uchiha forces instead of evacuating. And you couldn’t—”

“I was scared,” Sakura interrupts, and though her voice is small is stops his growing irritation in its tracks. “I…I wanted to, but then…I thought about just leaving…and then there were so many people who needed help, and between the evacuations and the fighting and everything. And then Hinata and her family arrived, with their complications, and I know that she was Sasuke’s betrothed and if they found out that I…and you’ve been spending so much time with her, I thought...I know you wouldn’t want to keep secrets from her, so I just…it was never the right time. And by the time it was, I thought you would be angry at me for keeping it quiet for so long.”

“I’m not angry,” he tells eventually. “A bit hurt, but not angry.”

“No,” the green-eyed woman says, offering Karin a tired smile. She no doubt suspects why Karin isn’t able to tear herself away just yet. Then she returns her attention to Naruto. “I’ll…I’ll make it up to you.”

“Heh. You’d better.”

“And…thank you. For not being angry.”

“Yeah, well, I don’t believe in grudges,” Naruto dismisses, stretching his arms in a show of casual disinterest. “If anything else, this war taught me how stupid that is.”

“I don’t know what I would do without you, and not just today,” Sakura goes on sincerely, and then swallows heavily. “It’s enough that my child’s father hates me. I don’t know what I would do if her godfather did, too.”

Naruto blinks at her, uncertain if he has heard right.

“Are you insane?!” Karin demands. “He can barely keep a toad alive, and you want to give him responsibility over your child?”

“Well, I’m hoping her godmother will also pitch in,” Sakura suggests, giving Karin a significant look.

“What?” she asks in toneless disbelief.

This took a bit of a hit recently as I started a new job in London which means that I am no longer home till 8pm at the earliest, so split meals have come back in... but this means cooking twice and that’s just not possible every night. Split meals are fine if you’re happy to stuff your child with processed crap but my partner has always tried to feed her daughter fresh cooked food as much as possible and I am a huge advocate for this because I am a big foodie and am always found in the kitchen on my days off...

In fact, thinking about it, until I started my new job I was cooking dinners for us all for the best part of a year, sometimes split and others all together, but always the same thing that could just be heated up later when we actually wanted to eat.

Date Night

This one might seem a bit obvious but I can probably count the number of actual dates that we have been on with the fingers on one hand... this isn’t because we don’t like or want to go out, it’s purely because you can’t take a child on a date and on the weekends that she is with her dad we don’t have the energy to go out in the evenings as our days are filled with things like sport (we are both members of the local rugby clubs) and catching up on things like housework because you can actually have a spotless house for a day or two...

It’s not the end of the world and I don’t think either of us mind much but it would be nice to have the option without leaning on family members to come and babysit Dan then have the pressure of getting back early enough for it to be reasonable, meaning you are probably out for no more than 2 hours.

Family Members (mine)

Now, this is a bit odd really and is something I still don’t really consider too much because my family have been very accepting from the start, especially the direct family. The thing is though, that my mum probably won’t get biological grand children from me now (my partner and I have around a 5% chance of that happening due to medical things... maybe a post in that, I’ll have to see) and my brother has indicated that he would rather adopt. This means that she won’t get to have that lovely feeling of being a grandparent, she is having to settle for the much less glamorous step-grandparent, and even then that isn’t actually how she would be referred to either. It must be quite tricky...

We bought a puppy a few days ago and she’s already asking for constant updates and pictures etc. Just imagine how much more excited she would be if he were a human child rather than a dog! Part of me does feel bad about this but there isn’t anything we can do and we have looked into all of the medical options etc.

Social Life

Not something I had considered at all. How my social life would be effected. I don’t have a very complicated social life at all, I am a member of a rugb club and that’s where the majority of my socialising takes place, I’ve got a few other people I will see outside of there but nothing huge.

What I didn’t bank on is suddenly working my social life around not just one but two people, you always make some changes to fit in with your partner so you can spend time together as well as with each respective grou of friends but to then include someone who doesn’t have that freedom with their social life, it depends entirely on adults being around to make the plans work and this means that your life hasty take a hit. It’s not a bad thing and meant thatI didn’t drink whenI went out as much because there might be a need to drive later on in the evening if something were to happen for example.

I think that this is probably the hardest thing for most people, especially if you’ve been single for a while or your previous partner was willing and able to be out as much as you were.

It’s not all bad though

Having said all of this the other thing we didn’t discuss andI honestly wasn’t prepared for is how much you can care about someone who really isn’t your responsibility at all and how quickly you are prepared to make the small changes for your life to revolve around them, I’ve never had a second thought about it at all and recently I’ve become teacher as well due to the lockdown that is currently in place, on the whole I love it.

Some of the things that I didn’t realise would be more enjoyable are;

Cooking - I love to cook and try out new things all of the time, obviously I have had to adjust certain things like heat content when I used to have things a bit spicier but overall it’s so much better now. One of the things I cherish when cooking and always have, is the reaction to other people eating something you’ve cooked and them loving it, leaving. Clean plate or asking for more. This happens all of the time now! We have also started to cook together, myself and the 10 year old that is, I’ve taught her a few basic things to cook as well as how to use the knives properly and the importance of tasting regularly and seasoning. She is starting to understand depth of flavour and appreciate the slightly more expensive cuts of meat and freshness of vegetables. My passion is being passed down the line, just like it was from my parents (especially my dad) to me and that is amazing!

Family time - Previous to this family time was something that I was almost made to do, the family get together to spend some forced time together where you play board game and eat a roast dinner because it’s a particular date. Family time is now the small bit of the week where we all stop doing our usual things and just spend time with each other, no distractions! I should probably apologise to my Mum for all of the times that I didn’t want to take part because I just plain couldn’t be bothered... Sorry mum.

Passing on of knowledge - I’m nothing compared to a specialist teacher in each subject but I have gathered an awful lot of information about random things over the years of pub quizzes, podcasts and reading and it is all suddenly very useful! I’m passing these bit on not just to help it’s homework or in the current ”Teacher” role but just general conversation as well... Who knew that knowing weird and wonderful things was actually useful? Not me that’s for sure.

Coming home - I used to finish work and go home waiting tillI couldnext go out, often I wouldn’t get back till quite late just because I had no reason to be there, it’s where I slept and ate. Now I make sure I get home as early as possible so that I can be in before bedtime, not because it particularly matters to the child but it’s weird that you very quickly pick up that part of the routine that you are part of even if it is a small part, being able to say goodnight and god morning to people you care about is something that everyone takes for granted and only realise it when they can’t anymore.

My family life - By this I mean with my family, the ones I used to avoid somewhat. WhatI now do is call them regularly just for a chat and try to see them as often as I can just to say hello. I’m not sure where this has come from but it’s quite a nice thing to have and has definitely improved our relationship as a whole.

So there it is, there are hundreds of small things that I could put in here but I feel that I have covered the bases and this isn’t actually for anyone to read, even though it is posted to the internet. If you stumble across this and like it, that’s brilliant and I’m pleased but I’m writing this for me, it’s a way of documenting this journey that I’m now on and hopefully when times get hard or I’m having a bad day I can look back at this and remember all of those things and it will bring me round...
