I WISH people would use the word "trigger" correctly, it feels like it means nothing anymore. Just say you're uncomfortable with the topic! It's *perfectly fine* to just be uncomfortable with a topic! People should still listen to your preferences just as much, even if they're *not* literally dangerous to your state of being! Just because a trigger CAN be any random subject and you don't owe an explanation to random people for them doesn't mean you can just do whatever you want with no repercussions. Do some introspection.... The word squick exists for a reason :\

Sorry for rambling, this is something that really bugs me. Especially since there's not a lot that can be directly done about it - since going up to any specific person and saying "your triggers aren't real" is *awful*, the only option is trying to spread information and hoping, HOPING that it gets spread around and sticks enough for people to change themselves. Sigh.

This is absolutely a big issue. Everything is a trigger because people don't know how to use a word and because it's a "trigger" you're not allowed to challenge them or ask them to use the tools available to protect themselves.

But also, again, except in your own private servers etc, you're not necessarily entitled to comfort on the wider public internet because it's a public square. Safety? Ideally yes. Comfort? That's your responsibility. Normal extreme content should be kept in separate places, like say separate channels on a discord server. That's perfectly reasonable.

However I also think it's completely unreasonable to expect users to read a huge "trigger" list before they type literally anything in chat. I can't remember 20 different things I'm not allowed to talk about when it includes bullshit like lobsters and zombies. I have a TBI and I would argue that if anything, expecting us to do that is an issue. Lobsters didn't kill your family or assault you. Neither did zombies. "But my Ex was obsessed with crustaceans so every time i see a crab it reminds me of them and I freak out!" Perfect example of a personal response that is your responsibility to navigate. It's not everyone's job in a public space to avoid the "z-word". If you are so debilitatingly upset by common things that you're likely to stumble upon many times a day by going outside or using the internet then it's not a healthy space for you lmao. It just kills me. Can you survive a red lobster commercial? Can you go outside during Halloween? Then you can ignore chat in a discord server about a subject that you don't like. It's not everyone else's problem.

Been going through the Gregor tags recently and let me tell you: It's a nightmare. But then I caught sight of your little dialogue snippet and it was a breath of fresh air compared to all the rest. Can you tell me a little about your Gregor fic please?

After reading what's been going on in the tags through @maiseey 's post on the blatant ableism and lack of understanding of TBI people have shown towards Gregor, I don't really blame you for finding the experience of navigating his tags so harrowing. There's a reason I avoid my favourite clone boy's tags after all...

I'll be honest Anon, I'm a little afraid anytime I write Gregor because I'm scared I might not have the words to portray him correctly. That's why I pour hours into trying to research stuff before I put it to words, and Gregor (and the people he represents) deserve at least that amount of respect and decency. Plus I try to make it a norm that if I don't understand a thing 100% I should at least try to figure it out before I try to write it.

Gregor's a confident and very good natured man. He takes things in stride and is highly competent, which I think is what kept him alive so long in canon. Sure his giggling might make it seem like he doesn't take things seriously, but I think that couldn't be farther from the truth. Having a good sense of humor despite life being a complete hell to you and your peers, doesn't mean you're nothing more than the classroom clown.

If anything, Gregor's good disposition is likely what makes it easy for people to underestimate him. Something he can easily use to his advantage.

And that's what I'm hoping to portray in my fic.

Gregor being a bit of a mystery to Hunter, Tech and Echo because he's not the idea they had of a commando (Hunter and Tech because they're trained commandos and they likely saw others being trained as well from a distance, and Echo because he has a very limited experience with commandos in general) and both Wrecker and Omega being less confused and more curious and accepting of his quirkiness (Wrecker himself likely recognizing that Gregor's thought process and situation might be a little similar to his own, and Omega just finding his experiences awe-inspiring because this man has gone through some Things™ and come off on top).

In the end tho, what I really want to show is just how intelligent and competent Gregor is. How he adapts to situations, utilizes past experiences to his advantage, and then empathizes with someone he recognizes as being in a phase of second-guessing and insecurity because of things well outside their control.

Aka, I want to write a fic where my favourite character gets to be his giggly confident self without being reduced to an infantilized/dumbed down version of himself, because honestly I'm so tired of being disappointed whenever I see his name pop up in fic tags only to see him so out of character and over the top.

Review of Sink or Swimwear

I plan to put this review on my website as well as on Amazon.

This was my first book through booksirens.com and the process was pretty easy. I wanted to read memoirs as I am writing my own.

While Jennifer and my lives are very different, I enjoyed reading about her experiences and her moment in time.

What I was especially interested in was that she wrote about a period of time in New Jersey. Millburn and Short Hills for her story, while I lived in Westfield and Avon-by-the-Sea! I bet I had seen her boardshorts as I was part of the surfing scene way back. Her description of what she was looking for and what she designed made sense to me.

However, it was a little hard to get into the book in the beginning. You see, I found an error pretty early on, on page 41 of 328. The word was supposed to be “chicken”, yet it was “hicken”. While the word before it, lasagna was spelled correctly, it was hard to get that easy word misspelling out of my thought process.

I know that the book is already published, yet I hope that she might consider going back in and changing this book just a little bit. Ideas and thoughts seemed to bounce between the chapters. I realize that dealing with a father like she had was difficult, and maybe it is still not resolved, but there could have been more there.

The best parts of the story were when she explained about PTSD. It is an unfortunately sad tale that most people do not understand. Her emotions, stress, and mental anguish are real, yet most people only look for the physical harm done.

She had in her beginning about:

Shocking complications in the pursuit of business goals: trademark lawsuits; wire fraud and cybercrime; and production pitfalls.

An insider tell-all of photo shoots, fashion shows, and industry parties.

The relationships that better you and your business — and those that don’t.

Personally, I did not see Number 1 within the book. She had a business idea and while there are always pitfalls and possible lawsuits and other stuff, being a smart business person is important especially with clothing ideas. She could have gone to irs.gov or other websites to see if the name was taken. That is the first step most people suggest in the beginning.

Secondly, I did not see any cybercrime. Yes, it stinks when your social media is used without your complete control, but I would not call that cybercrime.

Third, I did enjoy the tell-all, as she puts it, of photo shoots, fashion shows and trade shows. I have been to so many trade shows in the past, it is a wonder some companies still do them with all the theft out there.

Fourth, the book did not go into any depth about balancing work, family and stress. Nor the last one, relationships that better you and your business. It is smart to have or know about the law, finance, websites and social media, along with whatever you are selling. Her husband, thankfully was able to take care of some of it. I am sorry that some friends or workers became untrustworthy. It makes for a hard day.

I did enjoy the book, and read it all the way through. I can honestly say that I was able to read it in less than a week, actually in only four days, with much time in-between reading and not reading. It can be a quick read. However, it is also an important read to understand PTSD and the person’s emotions and observations. Bravo to Jennifer for that.

Degrassi - Long term Losses

AKA What plots we needed but got upended by the Bus Crash

Sidebar: NOT SORRY FOR THAT JOKE!

So the bus crash was a perfectly played out sucker punch to the kidney that left you breathless and crying on the floor after you realized what it was. However it did derail two running plots that in the long term would have been valuable for a short term gain of the fantastic Eric and Olivia show stealing scenes in NC3.

Let’s talk about those for a moment.

Okay, I might be overstating with the whole ‘two plots’ thing because only one of them was a running plot, and the other was an Lovecraftian abyss where good plots die known as the writing around Tristan. Let’s start with Maya as everyone is probably tired of my angry rants about Tristan’s mismanaged plot lines.

Musical Matlin

So before the crash Maya was boyless and heading into the world of ‘turning into an adult’ a lot more than almost any other Degrassi senior in the past. Clare and Alli got close but Clare’s plot derailed with her sexual harassment plot and Alli’s plot never left the school. Which hindered it being a ‘becoming an adult’ plot. Drew also got close but his plot quickly turned into ‘babysit Miles’ and ‘don’t sleep with Grade Tens who are trying too hard.’

So with Maya, who actually had a lot of space to explore ‘running headlong into her career,’ they derailed it for her suicide plot. Which was great, Olivia killed that plot dead. Poor choice of words, point is I’m not complaining about the plot. But we lost a lot of room to explore another useful teenage issue. However, Maya Matlin, was the character to do it with.

See, since Cam, this darkness has been trailing Maya. Getting a bit of plot space here or there, but not the space it needed. It showed up two or three times each season before now. So it was the right plot for the right character, and Olivia hit all the marks for the plot... which is why this isn’t so much critical as ‘petty complaining.’

Troubles with Tristan

So while Maya was complaining, this is an actual criticism. And I KNOW without this I’d lose all the Lola plot from NC3. But there was a lot to do with Tristan that probably won’t find space if they do his TBI plot correctly. See, I still feel Tristan isn’t ‘done’ until they have him face his insecurity head on. And his biphobic slutshamy things, but mostly the Insecurity.

I mean face it. Not... casually get confirmed ‘being gay is hard’ from a random one shot love interest, followed by Tristan being a bad friend to everyone. Having Tris own up to his issues and decide to change, even casually (like Zig ‘not cheating on Esme’ is him moving past his ‘cheating on everyone else’ characterization). 

See, Zoe and Miles have had chance after chance to reverse their terrible horrible life choices from early on. They’re the same characters, but also clearly not the awful people they were. Maya will be spending S4 facing her own demons. I hope Zig and or Winston get to face their issues (Zig’s past/family drama, Winston.... getting a plot).

Sidebar: Not all characters are on the same level of use, Esme, Jonah, Tiny, and Grace were never going to be given the same level of focus as Maya, Zoe, Tris, and Miles. And that’s fine. It isn’t fine there’s a clear racial divide, and that shit needs to stop. But you can’t be surprised some character’s are leads, and some are seconds.

We’re not going back to giving Snake plotlines.

Now, now we have Tris recovering from a huge injury, there should be a lot of time spent on his injury. For Tristan, someone who is all about being self-realized (and then insecurely undermining himself) that’s a huge shift to adjust to. Which means all of that? Should take priority over him overcoming his past issues. But if we turn our back and just let a biphobic jerk tell his best friend her orientation and erase his boyfriend’s identity it won’t be a compelling resolution.

If you want to understand what I mean, Goes Hollywood had issues, but the plots for Paige, Ellie, and Marco were on theme to show how they grew. ...or ungrew for Paige then regrew because... okay I said issues were had.

Quick Conclusion

I’m concerned that Tris’s recovery and his relationship with Miles will be rolled up into one plot, and put most of the weight on Miles again. And really Tris needs his season to learn and grow, way more than Miles who has killed it lately. And by lately I mean the whole time.

Hopefully I’m wrong and Tris will get his growth, but... they don’t have a great track record on this.
