OBVIOUSLY MY NUMBER ONE!!! the premise of the smau is so so important to me <3 i love art so much and graffiti just feels so in character for suna?? and he's such a loverboy?? and the photography plot has just really opened my eyes to the amount of time and effort that goes into the profession!!! oh my god i always think about all the lyrics i picked out <3 and just suna and yn dancing around their problems but still flirting with each other some of my fav chapters definitely have to be chapter 3 and 9 (i have been this 🤏 close to reblogging chapter 9 and just saying paragraph 8 like a thousand times. i wrote that entire little excerpt on a tramway in nyc on the way to roosevelt island) <3 my life while i was writing love notes was really nice and this smau is just so so important to me and i was so happy that others also enjoyed it omg i need to stop yapping <3

one of my favorites bc it's basically a self insert 😭😭 it's honestly helped me realize so much about myself and is such a comfort fic for me!! i've read a few fics that seem to capture this feeling of like looking back on a time long ago, which is sort of like fond nostalgia? sort of like if you were married and think back to how you married your spouse, or sitting on a rooftop with your best friend and thinking about how you guys were in your younger days if that makes sense. i love that feeling of it being like your reading a story that happened some time ago, and isn't happening currently, and that's what try again feels like to me. the therapist-client dynamic and messy characters is so important to me, AND U GUYS HAVE NO IDEA WHAT KIND OF SELF INDULGENCE TRAUMA DUMP IS COMING SOON <3 (sorry this sounds so aggressive omg)

Summary: Rewrite of chapter 5, book 3. Eleanor looks for comfort and advice in Bryce after a difficult day, still unsure about the decision she made about Francis' life.

A/N: Hello. I don't know what's this. I don't even know where this belongs, if to my WYR Universe or if it's just a simple rewrite. Well, maybe not precisely a rewrite because I wrote this like they were official and both had said ILY before, so... maybe this belongs to the canon where we all have made it official with Bryce? Yeah, probably that's better.

I dug a lot in my MC's mind about making the decision whether to save Francis' life or not.

I hope you enjoy this! It really gave me comfort after the disappointmnet these past two (five) weeks have been.

Solace

Her heart was beating fast, ringing in her temples like a timebomb while everything around her was moving in slow motion.

She had to give an answer and every single second she wasn't giving it, were precious seconds Francis was missing.

“Eleanor?”

Ethan, Harper, and Tobias were looking at her in the OR, waiting for her to say something. To say something she wasn't remotely sure about.

Because it wasn't just an answer. A simple answer like ‘what do you prefer? Coffee or tea?’ No.

A man's life depended on her answer.

How could they, three accomplished, experienced attendings, give her the final vote, the burden of the decision? Even if it was for the sake of democracy, all the weight of the responsibility shouldn't be on her.

But it was.

And she had to face it up no matter what.

But what was the best decision?

Follow her intuition or just go for what could be more beneficial?

Choosing about a man's life shouldn't feel like this. Like bargaining for it. Which option gives the best outcomes? Like it was simply business, just numbers. That's how Tobias seemed to see it.

Yes, doctors make these kinds of decisions daily, it's part of the job, but that didn’t make it any less difficult. Playing God.

But she didn't want to play God, she never wanted it, she always saw Medicine as a way to heal people, to fight for people’s lives... and their quality of life.

Would Francis have a quality of life if the surgery wouldn't turn out as expected? If he ended up in a vegetative state? Probably not, but not knowing that answer with certainty didn't justify not taking the chance and operating him either.

Fighting for his life was the option that less seemed like she was playing God.

She wasn't going to make a decision that involved disposing of his life, not in a situation like that.

“Harper, you have to try and save him,” Eleanor finally said, her voice firm, “We can't give up on him, not yet.”

Harper nodded and instantly started shouting orders in the OR.

When she looked at her colleagues, she noticed Ethan looking at her with evident relief on her face, and a tint of thankfulness glinting in his eyes, while in Tobias’ there was some kind of defeat.

She shook her head in disappointment and strode out of the OR, her heart still pumping in her temples.

This wasn't about siding with any of them. She didn't do it to side with Ethan over Tobias and keep feeding the absurd fight they'd been engaged all day, but she was too worried to even think about telling them that, to even look for the strength to snap and clarify to them that her decision had nothing to do with them, but with the patient.

She had more important things to do than act like a preschool teacher trying to mend a fight between two boys over a toy.

Was it the right choice?

That question was the only thing on her mind, hammering and hammering inside her head incessantly. She couldn’t be sure even if that was what felt right inside the OR.

Followed by Ethan and Tobias, Eleanor got inside the Diagnostic Office and tumbled over the couch, the weight of the decision just adding more to what she already had for the day.

Bloom, Ethan, Tobias, and now this.

She tried to distract herself with paperwork, reading journals, but her mind always ended up wandering toward the OR.

Was it the right choice?

She knew there was only one person who could help her with the answer to that question. Or at least, give her some peace about her decision.

Checking the time in her watch, Eleanor pulled her cellphone out of her pocket and typed:

Call me when you have a moment to talk. I need you :(

And she sent it, hoping the answer would come up in a couple of hours; luckily, before the A. V. M. removal was finished.

An hour or so later, which felt like an eternity, her phone rang. Eleanor answered as soon as she read his name on the screen.

“Hey gorgeous, what happened?” Bryce greeted on the other side of the line with a worried tone.

“Hey,” she replied softly, trying not to catch her colleagues' attention, “Are you busy right now?”

“Nope, I just got out of my last surgery, I'm free for the day.”

“Come meet me in the DT office and I'll explain.”

"Sure, see you soon."

About five minutes later, Bryce knocked on the glass wall to catch her attention. As soon as she recognized his dazzling smile on the other side of the glass, Eleanor got up and scurried out of the office without saying a word to Ethan nor Tobias, and found Bryce leaning against a secluded nook a few feet from the office.

“Hey, beautiful.”

Unable to say a word, Eleanor simply hugged him, circling her arms around his back, and rested her head over his taut chest, his heartbeat lulling her in just a couple of seconds.

Bryce enveloped her instantly in his arms, carefully pressing his lips over the crown of her head, “Hey, hey, babe, what is it?”

That simple gesture seemed to lift off like half the weight she'd been carrying all day.

She shook her head and then buried her face on his chest, feeling like that place was better than any pillow or mattress she'd tried before. There was no other place that could comfort her like being in his arms, her head over his chest.

“Has been a tough day,” she mumbled in a weary sigh.

"Wanna talk about it?"

Slowly, Eleanor parted to stare at him in the eyes, a weak smile drawing on her face, “Yeah, I'd like that.”

“Maybe we could go something quieter like the serenity garden? You must be needing to catch some fresh air too.”

Eleanor nodded imperceptibly, "That sounds perfect."

Without another word, Bryce took her hand and both sauntered to the stairs in silence. Once in the Psychiatric wing, they took another pair of stairs up to the rooftop, where the Tranquility Garden was placed.

At that time of the day, the sun was already hiding on the horizon, a vibrant pink and purple sky was covering the city, giving the garden a soft, sweet, and warm haze inside.

After looking silently at the view, Eleanor breathed in slowly, letting the fresh air, the quietness, and the stunning view lift more of the weight off her shoulders and then turned to Bryce, who was watching her from a bench a few feet from her.

“Whenever you're ready,” he said gently, giving her an encouraging smile.

“Okay, yes. I can do this,” she muttered to herself, sauntering towards him, “So… did you notice Tobias Carrick was in the DT office, right?”

“Yes, is he working here?”

“Yes, Leland hired him, but that's not really the worst of all…”

Without holding anything back Eleanor told him everything that had been brewing inside her all day, and some things even for a few days. The move Leland had made on the Diagnostics Team, the fact that he hired Tobias behind Ethan’s back, Ethan's reaction, that he and Tobias discussed in front of Leland, and that there was a reason why Ethan and Tobias had so much bad blood, but none of them seemed willing to leave it all behind for the sake of the team and the patients.

Then, she told him about Francis, her patient, and the crossroads she had to face due to the lack of consensus in the team.

"I had to make the choice, Bryce, I had to choose whether to fight till the end and save his life or secure those organs so other people can have it," She said, upset, walking in circles around the garden while Bryce was quietly listening to her, "I know he didn't want to be a vegetable but… I really think he has a chance. Besides all the crap I had to do to keep Ethan and Tobias off each other's necks, to try to make them find a middle point, I had to make the choice because both were too stubborn to make a compromise."

“I’m so sorry, babe, they give you a huge responsibility with that.”

"Absolutely. I know I have different responsibilities from a regular third-year resident because I work on the DT, but… I don't know, I feel like I wasn't prepared to make such a decision. And I'm not sure if I made the right choice in the end. I mean, of course, Francis deserved to fight for his life, and it's our duty as doctors do everything in our power to save patients' lives, but what if he's not the same?", Eleanor stopped in the middle of her imaginary circle and turned to Bryce, "What if he ends up in a situation he didn't want to be in?"

She was helpless.

“You have to trust your gut, babe. That has always been your guide. What did it tell you?”

“That he still has a chance.”

“There you have,” he stated, extending his hand in the air.

"But the decision wasn't all medical. It wasn't a matter of 'What procedure or outcome is better or worse', we made the decision about whether to fight for his life for him or not. Literally, we had to play God here."

Bryce furrowed his lips, realizing the magnitude of her restlessness. How conflicted she was with the decision she had to make.

As she was just a couple of feet away from him, he briefly stood up and leaned to take her hand and slowly guided her towards him, until she was standing between his open legs, and her hands resting on his shoulders.

"Look," he said, securing her with his hands on her hips. Bryce looked at her with complete earnestness but his tone was eloquent, "From what you told me, I can see that you took the time to get to know your patient, you know what he wanted, what his apprehensions were about the D. N. R. order, and you also know how much he has to give. He's still young and has a husband with so much to live with yet. You didn't make the decision just as any doctor using your power to play God, but as a doctor who knows him, who took all the variables into consideration, and then chose what was better for him. And that was fighting for his life. It wasn't about you saving him, or deciding to keep him alive, it was about you using the chance he has to fight for his life.”

Eleanor stared down silently at him, taking in his words. Then she bit her lip.

“You’re right. But if I am completely honest, there's something else I took into consideration, something personal that I don’t know if it was right of me to do so.”

“What is it?”

With her free hand, she stroked his hair distractingly, “I don’t know. That's what makes me so… worried or anxious about this, that I didn't make the decision as a doctor only, I let my feelings get involved and I fear that this could've judged my judgment.”

"Elle, you said it yourself: the decision you had to make wasn't entirely medical, the team, the four of you had to try to fill the space your patient left in blank. He wasn't sure about signing the DNR order but also wasn't sure about not having one. You made the decision for him while also trying to keep his husband's interest in mind. Whether it is your job or not, you tried to be integral in your decision, and I sincerely believe you did it wonderfully."

“You really think so?”

Now it was his turn to cup his hands on her cheeks and caress her. Eleanor stared at him with the purest adoration despite the sadness in her eyes, "You did more than any doctor would've done and that should make you feel more than proud about your decision."

Eleanor smiled and carefully sat in one of his legs, wrapping him around his neck with her arms, "I know, but it's really frustrating not knowing what's gonna happen, if he's going to survive, if he's not gonna be the same, if he's gonna change his behavior. Maybe the husband would have preferred…. To…"

"But that's not your responsibility," Bryce insisted, his unwavering face a few inches from hers, "There was no consent in the D.N.R. paper, so that means he still considered you to keep him alive. You did your best with all the information you had, that should be enough for you."

Eleanor nodded and then rested her forehead against his temple, suddenly exhausted with the whole conversation, but feeling somehow soothed, “Yes. Yes. I did my best, now I only have to wait to know how that surgery ends up.”

“Do you want me to keep an eye on the O.D.?”

"No, I'd prefer if you stay with me, if you have the time, of course. I don't wanna be alone, or locked with those two sulkings in the office."

Bryce chuckled, “Count me in.”

After a few seconds in silence, Bryce hooked an arm under her tights and lifted her up to sit her over his lap, “Feeling better?”

Eleanor parted from him, her nose mere inches from his, and her lips curling in a sweet smile, “Much, much better, thank you, my love. I knew you’d help me to come into my senses.”

Then she softly brushed her lips on his, lingering the kiss for a couple of seconds.

“I'm glad I can be there for you when you need it,” he whispered after parting from her, “Thanks for calling me.”

He kissed her this time.

"Thank you for always being there for me when I need you.” She stood silent for a moment, her golden eyes warmly looking at his, "I love you."

1. Where do you live? I currently live in Delaware...yeah, the tiny ass state everyone forgets about.

2. One cool item you own? I’m trying to think of something really deep and meaningful...I have a Texas charm with golden star on it that I wear with a cross on a chain around my neck and never take off. 

3. Moon or stars? The stars (High key one of the things I miss most about Texas)!

4. Places you’d like to travel to? Either to London or to Disney...both are related to Peter Pan for reasons.
