all the numbers u haven't done
roleplaying habits questions.
1. what’s a grammar rule you find yourself breaking or ignoring a lot?
Offhand I can’t really think of anything?? English is my first language so I don’t knowingly break any grammar rules anyway. Unless possible excessive use of commas counts bc I use commas a lot.
2. are there any languages besides english in which you think you could comfortably roleplay?
Unless Gibberish counts bc I learned that stupid crack language back when I was a kid but good lord I would not have the patience to actually type out a reply like that.
3. how often do you reach for a synonym dictionary when writing? how about mentally?
Sometimes but not too frequently. Depends on how flowery I’m trying to write something or if I’m thinking of a word but I don’t like the first descriptive word that came to mind for what I’m trying to express.
4. how often do you need to translate your own or the other’s writing with a dictionary or google when writing and reading replies?
Never tbh. Especially since I don’t RP in any other languages, all my RP partners have a good enough grasp on English that I can always tell what they were at least trying to say in their reply.
5. do you listen to music while your write?
I used to need music playing in the background to help me focus on doing drafts, but nowadays I need more silence than anything to help focus and produce what I think is a quality response to a longer thread. Short one or two liner things idc what’s in the background.
6. do you have ideal writing circumstances when you can do a lot of drafts or tackle really long ones very easily?
I can fluctuate with when I best write. Typically I write better at night when the house is quiet and any noise happening in the house is a noise I make, but I’ve had writing inspiration hit me at any time of the day before.
7. are you a morning, day, evening, or night writer?
Bold of you to assume I’m awake during morning hours that don’t include 5 AM bc I’m still awake haha. When I’m not swamped with commissions to do I typically write better during the day or at night when I’m the only person awake in the house and I don’t have any outside distractions from a person IRL.
8. how does tiredness affect your writing?
Not overly so sometimes, I know there’ve been times in the past where I powered through replies even though I wanted to go to bed just because I was riding the motivation train and I didn’t want to lose it and not get to those last replies for who knows how long. But on Discord at least I often have reply to Discord threads be one of the last things I do before I go to sleep so I go to bed knowing I don’t owe anyone a reply on there.
9. have you ever written a serious reply intoxicated?
Not a serious reply anyway. I’ve been on the dashboard before while intoxicated (ColossalCon East was a prime example haha) but I’ve never really RP’d while that intoxicated
10. how much do you proof-read as you are writing vs. proof-read at the end?
I’ll proof read as I go but also give it one last read before I actually hit publish.
11. when you are writing a reply, how much ahead in the thread do you plan?
Entirely depends on the thread. I could write it on the fly or I could have days to think about it from external factors keeping me from getting to the reply as soon as it comes back to me.
12. is there ever been a time when you’ve had to drop a roleplaying partner because you’ve found their writing style exhausting?
Yes actually, gather round for RP horror storytime haha. Flash back to 2013 while I was still in the Black Butler fandom. I stupidly decided to give writing Sebastian a try at the request of a Ciel I’d made friends with (probably through my old Alois or Lizzie blog). She was a nice enough girl, close enough to my age so she seemed plenty mature, and had been what I thought was a good enough writer to warrant trying my hand at a muse I wouldn’t have otherwise thought to try. Legit within days of me making the Sebastian blog she was getting super clingy in her IC posts making Ciel a whiny baby missing Sebastian, would try and guilt me in IC posts to get on and write with her, and I dealt with it for about two weeks before I deleted Sebastian’s blog without warning and deleted the girl off Skype. To this day it’s the only blog I think I’ve ever consciously deleted.
13. does writing roleplay things in public spaces make you uncomfortable?
Not really? I wouldn’t be crazy about a stranger reading over my shoulder while I was writing bc that’s just weird, but I’ve gone to Starbucks or one of the local malls before on my off days (back when I was still at my last job) and I’d do RP stuff there just to get out of the house.
14. how often do you need to change the icon in your reply while or after writing the reply?
Typically I don’t put in icons until I’m done writing the reply unless I go into the reply knowing exactly which one I want to use, or think of a good one while I’m writing it out.
15. do you first get in the “zone” when writing, or do you start writing and “enter” it that way?
Nowadays I just start writing and then get into the zone after I get the first reply done. Discord replies I can chug out any time of day without difficulty, but for whatever reason Tumblr I have to be in the right mindset for.
16. what is your biggest obstacle to writing every day, if time doesn’t count?
Back when I was at my last job, it would be getting a lot of writing muse while I was busy at work and unable to get on my own laptop or sneak onto Tumblr on an office computer and at least type out the bulk of a reply (yes I was employee of the month many times haha), and by the time I was able to get to my own computer or be safe enough to get on a work computer, that writing muse would be gone.
17. what’s your inbox count currently? what did you do to get it so high/low?
Right now I have 15 IC asks. I won’t lie, two of them are from last years Valentine’s Day bc I was away at Katsucon at the time of receiving them and by the time I got home I still just never got around to answering the asks, but I didn’t want to delete them either so I just kept them for posterity. Some are from this past Christmas that I was terrible and haven’t answered yet bc I’ve been so swamped with commissions, some are from other random meme’s I’ve reblogged and gotten an ask or two for and also just never got around to. I’m horrible at replying to asks most of the time and I know it but I always appreciate whenever people take the time to send me an IC one.
18. how many drafts is a paralysing amount?
I’d guess I’d say over 15 like para thread replies would make me be like -insert meme song- ‘how could this happen to meeeee’. I’m not quite at that point yet but I’ll get there eventually if I’m not careful lol.
19. if you are writing a wrong reply that’s not working out, do you save what you have to be continued at another date, or do you scrap it and rewrite?
Usually I would just draft what I have and go back to it. I can’t remember the last time I scrapepd an unfinished draft and completely rewrote it.
20. longest reply you’ve ever writen on mobile?
N/A because I don’t do replies on mobile. I’ll send asks on mobile but I never reply to actual IC things while on my phone unless it’s something stupid and cracky or one-liner-ish.
21. does the total amount of threads you have going on matter to you, or just how many you owe?
Doesn’t really matter. I can have one thread with one person, I could have five threads with one person. @shinvcho is an example of the latter lol
22. what’s your thought process when you format? any unspoken rules you follow?
I’ve kept to the same formatting for years and years tbh. I’m too lazy to do excessive formatting beyond italicizing and/or bolding specific words for emphasis and spacing out the start of a new paragraph. Anything more than that to me is just tedious and unnecessary; I don’t want to make it difficult for my partners to read.
23. how does your follower count affect your mood?
Anyone who says they don’t appreciate or enjoy even a small spike in followers is a liar, because we live in an age where validation is held in high regard and it feels good to get the validation of seeing more people enjoy what we do on our blogs enough to put us on their dashboards. But it also doesn’t really matter to me when I lose followers because I have a mutual checker so I can unfollow a mutual back if they did so first so I don’t feel uncomfy still following someone who no longer wanted me on their dash lol.
#ooc#THIS IS WHY I QUESTIONED HOW MUCH U ACTUALLY LOVE ME I HAD TO DO BASICALLY ALL OF THEM LOL#creturae

1 - 25 (/or at least the ones you’ve not answered so far)
ROLEPLAYING HABITS:
1. what’s a grammar rule you find yourself breaking or ignoring a lot?
I break like… all of them. It’s shameful but grammar has never really been my thing. Writing is so fluent and you don’t have to bend yourself after rules that tend to constantly change depending on whatever author made something popular for a while – as long as you make sense whilst writing!
2. are there any languages besides english in which you think you could comfortably roleplay?
Well, I am Swedish so obviously I’d also be comfortable writing in my native tongue – to some degree. I find Swedish to be ugly as heck and try and avoid it if possible.
3. how often do you reach for a synonym dictionary when writing? how about mentally?
I definitely do it more mentally then I do looking things up on my computer, it probably wouldn’t help much either way because I only tend to go with synonyms whenever I can’t find the words I want and once my brain poops it poops! I’d rather get my reply done than stall trying to find a fancier word to match.
4. how often do you need to translate your own or the other’s writing with a dictionary or google when writing and reading replies?
Not as much as I used to, that’s for sure. I had this weird phase a few years back when I’d write the reply up in Swedish first and then translate it to English using google translate instead of trusting my own skills. It helped me understand/learn some new words, but you know! These days it happens rarely, maybe a few times a month but it’s mostly me checking to see whether I’ve used the correct spelling etc.
5. do you listen to music while you write?
No, it’s another thing I’ve stopped doing. I keep telling myself I should open up my playlist whilst working on stuff but it never happens.
6. do you have ideal writing circumstances when you can do a lot of drafts or tackle really long ones very easily?
Ohh, I guess I have to be focused to fully get through more than one reply at a time. No youtube to keep me busy, no messages to interrupt my thinking – just me and me drafts. I also need to have slept well/not been to work in a while.
7. are you a morning, day, evening, or night writer?
Evening or day! I used to be a night writer, but I’m training myself to turn off technology around midnight and I tend to get kind of sleepy around said time so… Morning is a lmaooo, I’m not awake until lunch.
8. how does tiredness affect your writing?
It leaves me lackluster, zero imagination and with no patience. I tend to not write at all if I’m tired, unless the thread is really good and the person I’m up against isn’t around too often. Count them spelling errors tho.
9. have you ever written a serious reply intoxicated?
I don’t drink.
10. how much do you proof-read as you are writing vs. proof-read at the end?
Depends on how long the reply is! If it’s more than three paragraphs I tend to give myself a quick break and move back to the start to correct errors and sentences that sound off. Then I tend to give it another quick read before I send it, making sure I feel somewhat fine with the outcome. I’m way too into editing and rewriting, it’s rare I post a reply without proof-reading.
11. when you are writing a reply, how much ahead in the thread do you plan?
Depends on the thread! Sometimes I like to dwell on connections and such before bed, but they’re also supposed to be written between two people and I can’t assume what my partner will reply with -- ya know? I do, however, tend to plan my replies whenever I got time to spare. Saves me time whenever I do wanna do them drafts.
12. is there ever been a time when you’ve had to drop a roleplaying partner because you’ve found their writing style exhausting?
Here on my 1x1 I can’t say it’s ever happened, I’ve mostly just drifted away from those I don’t click with. In rp groups though it’s happened plenty of times, because either they give shallow/short answers which forces me to do all the work whilst replying or they just don’t seem very into our threads and it just brings it down to a low.
13. does writing roleplay things in public spaces make you uncomfortable?
Nope! I’ve written replies in school and at the library countless of times, it’s kind of peaceful and often give me a time limit to work with so I’m more effective heh.
14. what do you do after you see a person has replied? do you read it immediately, or do you wait for it to show up on the dash? do you like it, draft it immediately, etc?
I mean, if someone’s replied it should show up on the dash, right?? Or have I missed something?? I’m so confused. But if I can read it I definitely will, yes! As said, I work up my replies inside my head before I type them down and I tend to draft them as soon as I can.
15. how often do you need to change the icon in your reply while or after writing the reply?
I don’t use icons but uhh I add my gifs and such after I’m done writing, and sometimes it works right off the bat and other times I’ll have to click through a few of them.
16. do you first get in the “zone” when writing, or do you start writing and “enter” it that way?
I think I enter it? Never really thought about it. I tend to open up a reply and the “zone” takes over I’ll get a lot more done I guess.
17. what is your biggest obstacle to writing every day, if time doesn’t count?
I could never write every day, that’s just impossible for me these days. Usually my energy levels are low, I lack motivation or I don’t have threads that truly speak to me at the moment. It’s a bit of this and that.
18. what’s your inbox count currently? what did you do to get it so high/low?
Nothing! People don’t really have a reason to reach out that way??
19. how many drafts is a paralysing amount?
Maybe about 20? Especially if it’s longer replies. I tend to keep my drafts below the 20 mark because of this.
20. if you are writing a wrong reply that’s not working out, do you save what you have to be continued at another date, or do you scrap it and rewrite?
If I do, it’s probably my mood that’s wrong for said reply. I tend to draft it with whatever I’ve got and then I’ll revisit it some other time once my head is a lot more clear and willing to cooperate. It’s rare I delete everything and start over.
21. does making icons give or take away energy to write? what about other graphics?
I don’t use icons or graphics, I’d rather be without either!
22. longest reply you’ve ever written on mobile?
Nope. Nah. No.
23. does the total amount of threads you have going on matter to you, or just how many you owe?
Only the amount I owe! What I can’t see can’t hurt me omg.
24. what’s your thought process when you format? any unspoken rules you follow?
Formatting is for weak ppl. Stop that.
25. how does your follower count affect your mood?
Not at all? People follow if they want to follow, I didn’t make this blog with getting followers in mind. I’m just here to rp and have fun. It’s nice to see that follower count rise though, you’re all more than welcome to the party!
#its cute of u to assume ppl send me stuff like this omg#so imma just do them all in one#but thank you love <33#also me

MIKE DOES THE FIRST TASK FOR: HIMSELF
what’s a grammar rule you find yourself breaking or ignoring a lot?
uhhh my insane use of commas. or that people don’t talk w/ actions.
are there any languages besides english in which you think you could comfortably roleplay?
none at all. to my distaste, i am monolingual.
how often do you reach for a synonym dictionary when writing? how about mentally?
ALL the time. i am asking google for synonyms all day, every day.
how often do you need to translate your own or the other’s writing with a dictionary or google when writing and reading replies?
oh never. at least, not in a language standpoint?
do you listen to music while your write?
exclusively so. it helps keep me focused. stranger in the basement by bonecage helps me the most and spotify said i listened to it for 167 hours this year. /shrug
do you have ideal writing circumstances when you can do a lot of drafts or tackle really long ones very easily?
got me a drink. got my song/playlist that’s not too distracting ei. making me stop and want to sing along to it. no one in real life bothering me. i’m home on my desktop.
are you a morning, day, evening, or night writer?
i want to say a night writer, but like, maybe more of an evening writer. if it’s too early, it’s hard to get the muse going. if it’s too late, i’m tired and muses ftf off.
how does tiredness affect your writing?
if i’m tired it’s far too tempting to just.... go to bed lmao.
have you ever written a serious reply intoxicated?
i don’t really used toxins so like, not really. high? yes. it’s not the hardest thing.
how much do you proof-read as you are writing vs. proof-read at the end?
i reread my reply a lot but i need to get better at proof-reading right before posting reply....
when you are writing a reply, how much ahead in the thread do you plan?
none at all. my characters don’t work that way. i can only plan ahead as far as the end of the current reply. sometimes i even write the end of the reply before the beginning, but that’s mostly in case of dialogue. some statements my muses want to jump on asap.
is there ever been a time when you’ve had to drop a roleplaying partner because you’ve found their writing style exhausting?
there was never a time i made a decision because of it, but there are past partners that i see now that they were exhausting to write with. for all kinds of reasons.
does writing roleplay things in public spaces make you uncomfortable?
oh yes it do.
what do you do after you see a person has replied? do you read it immediately, or do you wait for it to show up on the dash? do you like it, draft it immediately, etc?
it depends! if i’m not in the middle of something, like out or working, i’ll read it right then and there -- open it up into a tab to do for later. otherwise i’ll make a mental note and get to it when i have some time to myself. i used to save drafts but i don’t do that usually now. i might like some replies so it’s in there and then unlike them, but typically, i just lurk the dash and collect the tabs.
how often do you need to change the icon in your reply while or after writing the reply?
not too often. i usually pick the icon after the reply, and i match the icon to the closest piece of dialogue or the more significant piece of expression.
do you first get in the “zone” when writing, or do you start writing and “enter” it that way?
i like to pretend i get into a zone but really, it happens when it happens, and then of course the outside world can take me out of the zone. i guess the zone is thrust upon me.
what is your biggest obstacle to writing every day, if time doesn’t count?
my short attention span, i’d say.
how many drafts is a paralyzing amount?
once it hits over ten i’m like oooouch. if it’s over twenty i feel like it’s never going to happen.
if you are writing a wrong reply that’s not working out, do you save what you have to be continued at another date, or do you scrap it and rewrite?
i kind of do both? depending on how much i worked on the first draft. i’ll save that, stop for a second and look at it later. like the next day. give my muse another chance to react.
does making icons give or take away energy to write? what about other graphics?
it’s more like i enter a purgatory where my muse is flowing gently as i work on a character’s resources. it’s a happy medium where i can kinda spend time thinking about them, but not have to think to hard. i’m just editing/making stuff.
longest reply you’ve ever written on mobile?
i wouldn’t be able to find out but it was def a few longer paragraphs. only like, the one or two times though. i rarely do mobile.
what’s your thought process when you format? any unspoken rules you follow?
i prefer to have my gifs match the closest context text. if the end of the reply, someone said something damning and has a matching icon, i gotta put it on the bottom. i also need to put two spaces behind my ? so that it’s easier on the eyes. oh and i match gif size w/ who i’m writing with.

This is for task number 1 on thelegacieshqs. This task was designed to find out the best time for your writing is and just learn more about your writing style. These tasks aren’t manditory unless it says so in the description of the task but it is always fun to do them when you have a moment. One can go back and redo some tasks as well (the writing prompts) as many times as they want for any of the characters they want.
what’s a grammar rule you find yourself breaking or ignoring a lot? A lot of them! I tend to ignore ain't (ain’t isn’t a word) a lot, starting a sentence with because is another one I forget often.
are there any languages besides english in which you think you could comfortably roleplay? Only know English but I really wish I could write in Italian and speak it because it is beautiful and a family member knew it but that died with them. English is comfortable and only language I know so sadly I am unable to write in another
how often do you reach for a synonym dictionary when writing? how about mentally? I often reach for it because my brain seems ti forget basic words (Day before yesterday, I couldn’t spell decide right and it looked wrong to me even when it was spelled right). I am always looking to improve my writing
how often do you need to translate your own or the other’s writing with a dictionary or google when writing and reading replies? Often enough and sadly sometimes it is my own writing that needs to be googlged. I use google for words that I am blanking on.
do you listen to music while you write? Yes! I listen to a lot of 1. sexual music 2. rap (that I can’t understand at all) 3. country music 4. pop music. If I am not listening to music, I am listening to my tv (But that turns out to be a bad idea in the end because I get distracted more than music does).
do you have ideal writing circumstances when you can do a lot of drafts or tackle really long ones very easily? Writing laying in my bed (If my hips hurt too much to sit up which sadly that has been happening a lot lately) with my dog curled up at my feet or side. Long replies (four paragraphs and above) can be really easy for me at times and I do prefer them to short ones but they also end up sometimes being the ones to stay in my drafts a lot time because if i have no muse for it, it isn’t getting done (On my indie)
are you a morning, day, evening, or night writer? night writer! I tend to get a lot of inspiration right when I settle down to go to bed and then I end up spending an hour longer tackling drafts until my head hurts. I do write replies at all times of the day!
how does tiredness affect your writing? If my vision is blurring and I can’t think a solid sentence ahead of time, the reply becomes sloppy and I am embarrassed to post it but I normally do just to get it out of my drafts. But on the flip side? Sometimes I write the best writing that I love when I am so tired that I just can't think straight for more than a minute.
have you ever written a serious reply intoxicated? No. I can honestly say I haven’t
how much do you proof-read as you are writing vs. proof-read at the end? Sometimes I don’t proof-read at all? If I am in a hurry there is none at all but I tend to do a little bit of both any other time.
when you are writing a reply, how much ahead in the thread do you plan? Sometimes I plan ten steps ahead for my character other times I stay in the moment. Emotional replies, I want to stay in the moment to stay natural.
is there ever been a time when you’ve had to drop a roleplaying partner because you’ve found their writing style exhausting? I have done it a few times in the indie world. If I am putting in more effort than my partner (One liners to a reply we started that was three paragraphs) or something, I tend to drop but in groups, I stick with it because it is the right thing to do. You join a group to be active with all members and not just some.
does writing roleplay things in public spaces make you uncomfortable? I don’t really rp out and about. I am at someone’s house or my own when I do it.
what do you do after you see a person has replied? do you read it immediately, or do you wait for it to show up on the dash? do you like it, draft it immediately, etc? I will draft it immediately and then read it (generally)
how often do you need to change the icon in your reply while or after writing the reply? Once or twice in some replies, not often but I do spend a lot of time looking for the ‘right’ icon/gif for my replies
do you first get in the “zone” when writing, or do you start writing and “enter” it that way? I tend to enter the zone when I write and not just be in it when I start.
what is your biggest obstacle to writing every day, if time doesn’t count? Muse in general? If I don’t have muse for drafts, chances are I don’t rp that day. If I am lacking muse for one thread I was looking forward to getting, I spend a while sulking. I also have to say pain (Physical) can keep me offline for a while and that is an obstacle for sure.
how many drafts is a paralysing amount? I have had 30 some replies (Do Believe I had that now on my indie) and that is an amount that has me looking at the number and just freezing up. It gets that way when 1. I don’t say no to an idea that I dislike and would have no muse for 2. I don’t know when to close a thread 3. I have no three. This isn’t in a rp group that this happens though.
if you are writing a wrong reply that’s not working out, do you save what you have to be continued at another date, or do you scrap it and rewrite? I have done both. I have a talent for writing half a reply, saving and coming back to it and scrapping the whole thing a day later.
does making icons give or take away energy to write? what about other graphics? Making icons can give me so much muse or none at all. Making gifs does the same thing
longest reply you’ve ever writen on mobile? I have never written an rp reply on mobile before!
what’s your thought process when you format? any unspoken rules you follow? For me, it is always italic the thoughts of my character (so generally when you see italic it is the thoughts going through their mind). I don’t like to do overly formatted text. I have tried for like two replies and couldn’t do it plus I want my text to be readable so just simple small text and a few bolded words if I feel it is needed and italic thoughts is my thing.

Your essay ought to have a definite ending, in the form of a conclusion. What’s much more discouraging is that intelligence and achievement don’t seem to assist. Here you need to summarize what it is that you've mentioned in your essay, stating what your reply to the query is and why. You might feel that you're repeating yourself, because the body of your essay ought to have made your argument clear already, but the reader will appreciate a great summary. Remember that good essays don’t just give proof for their viewpoint, but in addition reveal why opposing views are flawed. However, it’s much harder to seek out these ideas once more if you want them for an essay. This device lets you gather them multi functional place, making it much simpler to reference them when wanted. In an educational essay, it’s not enough to say, “The Earth is spherical.” You should have reliable evidence to assist your assertion. Sadly, it's typically the scholars who can benefit most from larger education who additionally battle the most. The sad truth is that low-earnings college students are considerably less prone to graduate from school than their wealthier counterparts. It is our job to search for great materials for your writing. If you simply place an order, we will do all the research for you. We will not deny the truth that there are scammers on the market and you'll come throughout one of them. Imagine a reader, then try to predict their objections to your argument, after which reveal why they're mistaken. If you're employed constantly in your essay proper as much as the deadline, there's a very high likelihood that you received’t have carried out your self justice. Aim to have what you subjectively feel is a “ultimate” draft at least two days earlier than the submission deadline. Use the remaining days to evaluate your work at nicely-spaced intervals.

Not another Parse III analysis
Under the cut because it got super long on me...
I know this particular episode has been analyzed to death, but I was rereading the comic (like you do) and came upon a new understanding of the above panel. Now I’m sure some of you may be like “duh!” when you read this but bear with me here, I think it’s a testament to how good of a storyteller Ngozi is that her work holds up to such repeated scrutiny.
So the Parson dialogue starts off “...huh. Well, shit. okay.” He is pausing to reconsider his angle and plan a new line of attack as we will see in the next line.
“...you know what, Zimmermann? You think you’re too fucked up to care about? That you’re not good enough?” He’s starting with these hypothetical questions where it’s clear that’s he’s portraying Jack’s voice. Now lets be clear that this is representative of Jack’s voice pre-overdose. Ngozi has said herself that Parson represents for Jack, a troubled past that he’d rather leave behind. Not necessarily Parson himself, but who he was when they knew each other. (Arguably neither party really knows each other anymore which is important for both sides)
Now the format of the dialogue changes where the dialogue seems to be Parse’s opinion.
“Everyone already knows what you are but it’s people like me who still care.”
“You’re scared everyone else is going to find out you’re worthless right?”
“Oh, don’t worry, just give it a few seasons, Jack. Trust me”
I don’t think these are Parson’s actual opinions of Jack. Why?
Well what is Parson’s want in this scene? He wants Jack to join him on the Las Vegas Aces so they can become a duo again. So why would he want Jack to join him if he thinks so little of him? Well, he doesn’t. Jack has at some point thought these things about himself and shared them with Parse. When you think about it, it’s clear that these fears are concurrent with how Jack was feeling during the period before the draft. It resonates with him now as he reattempts to enter the NHL.
Kent uses these feelings to manipulate Jack. He is recreating that fear in the hopes that Jack will seek refuge with him because of familiarity.
Jack, however, wants to make something of his new life and shed his past. Now interestingly, Jack still seems conflicted and unsure about what team he is going to sign with as a free agent. He says “It could be Montreal, it could be LA, I don’t know?” And when Parson asks “What about Las Vegas?” Jack replies “I don’t know, okay?”
This, and the subsequent make out, signal to me that while they’d had a few fall outs since the draft, Jack was not against Parse up until the moment Parse started manipulating him. (I think this is important in relation to the theme of manipulation in relationships. While this final set of dialogue is obviously maliciously intended, the earlier lines of “What do you want me to say. I miss you okay?” Jack responds with “You always say that.” while the statement is honest from Parson, the evidence that he uses this line with Jack multiple times, most likely to guilt him in some way, shows a less malicious but no less manipulative goal). Parse has reached the end of his rope, and strikes for the heart as one final futile attempt to sway Jack in his favor.
Now what’s unclear to me is why Kent Parson, current NHL captain of a relatively young Stanley Cup winning team, wants Jack to play for his team. While we don’t have a lot of evidence of Kent’s situation, it clear that he must be doing fine on the ice with his team. The two things Kent got from Jack was good hockey and romance/sex. By the power of deduction (and again the make out in Jack’s room), it’s clear that Kent must after Jack romantically. He uses a hockey angle to entice Jack, which ultimately fails.
My biggest question is then, has Kent attempted the romantic angle with Jack? I think so, I think that initial visit to Jack while he was in college was probably an attempt to rekindle their romance. Thinking that Jack must be fairly well recovered if he’s back in school, and carrying a proof of excellence in hockey (the Calder) I think Parson expects Jack to be proud of him because of what should be a shared sense of pride between lovers. The problem? Jack is not in love with Parson. Based on Jack’s flippant attitude about dating Parse, when talking to Bitty about his exes, Jack may now think of Parse as a summer fling as a means of suppressing feelings from pre-OD.
The tragedy of the situation then, is not the fallout itself, but the idea that Jack has changed the script on their relationship without ever letting Parson know. What ever Parson’s situation is it probably doesn’t allow him to express his sexuality freely, which is why he puts so much stock in rekindling a romance with Jack. It’s easy for him because he was highly emotionally invested in their relationship, and in his eyes, saw little reason for it to end because of the “interruption” of serious health issues. Seeing that Jack still wasn’t ready a few years ago, he waits and attempts again, not realizing that Jack’s perspective on their relationship has shifted dramatically. This argument makes it clear to both parties that the relationship is over (I think Parse really was holding out until this argument). It’s clear that Parse’s view changes too in the flash backs to him leaving the Kegster angry.
What does that mean for the comic going forward with Parse as an impending direct antagonist to Bitty? Well let’s analyze Parson’s wants again. His anger over the way his relationship with Jack finally ended may lead to him wanting retribution of sorts. When a person breaks up with you, it’s not so much them leaving that hurts and offends you, but it’s the removal of that person from your future that leaves you feeling unbalanced. Sadly I think Parson was always planning on a future with Jack, and in the twisted part of his reasoning, thought Jack still just needed space to recover (which arguably he did) and they could continue where they left off even years later. Jack, however, has changed as a person, and does not want a future with Parse. Once Parson realizes this, that bubble of a dream finally pops, leaving him angry and hurt. While I don’t think revenge is quite what he’ll be doing, he may be seeking some sort of retribution for that loss.
How do I think this will come about?A) He may try to sabotage Jack’s relationship with Bitty (should he happen to find out about it) or B) he may knowingly or unknowing sabotage Jack’s secrecy of his sexuality and relationship with Bitty.
How so? Well Jack’s sexuality may be put into question if Kent were ever outed (whether he did it himself or was outed). This would put pressure on his and Bitty’s relationship. Now I think this is the more likely scenario BECAUSE Ngozi is already laying the ground work for a smooth transition into coming out of the closet. The theme of year 3 has been by far the strain of secrecy. I’m even tempted to say that Jack will be out to the world either by the end of year 3 or beginning of year 4 and Kent may act as a catalyst towards this. I think that’s his role going forward. Jack’s 4th year arc, if I had to guess, will be reconciling his pre-OD past by repairing the wrongs between him and Kent.
As for Bitty’s arc in relation to the Jack/Parse antagonism? There’s a couple of themes that will be transformed going forward. For one the idea of private as public. Bitty’s tweets and vlogs act as a sort of journal of his inner most thoughts that he shares with an anonymous public. I think this is largely in response to his own feelings about being closeted separate from his relationship with Jack. This is slowly being reversed as Bitty must edit himself in his vlogs and tweets to maintain secrecy. This builds up pressure to Hi Honey I because Bitty doesn’t have a completely free outlet anymore. This is why they come out to their friends.
I’ve seen a lot of confusion surround why Jack was so chill about coming out to their friends (versus not so chill with his coworkers). I think its because he knows they will be fine with it. Bitty’s apprehension is about having a non-anonymous outlet for his identity in relation to his relationship with Jack.
Should Jack’s sexuality become a topic of interest if Parse comes out/is outed, and their relationship is made public (whether by reluctant force or pushed to a sooner date than they are ready for) Bitty’s identity and the way he presents himself will face a dramatic change. Suddenly his public private life will be too public and he will seek the privacy between him and Jack to have as solely their own. So what Parse represents as an antagonist for Bitty, is a catalyst towards a decision or change in lifestyle that he may not be quite ready for, being out with Jack as his boyfriend and all of the invasion of privacy that that entails.
I say all of this to say... All of these characters are incredibly complex, and their complexities are interwoven in their shared histories. Which is why I get frustrated when reductionist analysis happens to characters by the fandom. Because you aren’t just flattening the character you hate (Parse, I know, and it’s fine that you hate him. Seriously you are entitled to!!) but it flattens Jack and Bitty in turn. It denies the complexity of human existence that Ngozi has so beautifully laid out for us in her story and the complexity of human relationships that shape our lives and our identities. And while it’s healthy to cutout people who hurt you, it’s not healthy to create them into enemies. They simply shouldn’t matter to you anymore, and the troublesome part is... they usually do. But that’s human isn’t it?

No Sir, We Will Not Be Paying This Invoice
For the sake of this submission, we’ll call the antagonist Lord Farquaad because in episode one, this mental midget tries to force payment on a counterfeit invoice from the wrong party. As the head of an at best marginal advertising publication for realtors, this intellectual half-stack has been using bullish tactics to wring realtors of every dollar possible. Past plays have included debiting cards on file without notice and providing invoices afterwards, double-billing, over-billing and acting as if past advertising subscriptions had not been terminated. Today this stopped.
The development opens with two phone calls this morning. The first to my boss who will be referred to as [Cujaho’s Boss] in all subsequent emails in this episode. While I was not privy to this conversation, the jist of it goes:
-------
Lord Farquaad (LF): Hey you still haven’t paid your invoice and the credit card we have on file is cancelled
Cujaho’s Boss (CB): What are you talking about? We don’t advertise with you anymore, we haven’t for a long time
LF: The invoice for the September magazine, we’re featuring four of your listings and now you need to pay
CB: I have no idea what you’re talking about but I’m late for a showing, go fuck yourself Lord Farquaad
LF: This is going to get settled one way or another!
-------
Lord Farquaad then calls me shortly after. As someone who enjoys his life, I’ve enacted a standing policy to screen all Lord Farquaad’s calls since we terminated our account. Forced to leave a voicemail, the palpably steamy Lord Farquaad proceeds to go on to call myself and my boss the least professional people he’s ever met, fucking ignorant and promises on top of that to make sure everyone knows how we’ve acted. He closes by saying he doesn’t give a shit if we pay or not, he’ll just send collection services after us and then extends the “olive branch” that we’ll be terminated after settling and that we won’t have to deal with him ever again.
Shortly following this is the first email we’ve received from him for the alleged invoice - note that this is after the two prior phone calls. This is confusing as it’s been the better part of the year since we stopped using Lord Farquaad’s publication.
-------
“Hi Cujaho, [Cujaho’s Boss], Attached is an invoice for the Fall issue, please send your updated card information or a check for your 4 listings included in the fall issue. Had you told me or responded to any of the emails I sent out over the last month saying you were not continuing I could have removed you from our pull. I have now removed you from the pull going forward but your listings are in the fall issue and until this invoice is paid your account is now frozen. Please pay your bill.
Lord Farquaad”
-------
This is when I get excited. I know what I get to do next, so I immediately start researching the Better Business Bureau and its protocol for making a complaint. The BBB makes it very clear that any submission made is immediately final, no revisions can be made. The BBB also makes it clear that I need to show I have tried communicating with the alleged fraudulent business and have any and all supporting evidence included in this submission. I set out to build a paper trail of any past correspondence that I might need, screenshotting everything relevant as well as copying excerpts to be used in my counter threat email to Lord Farquaad. I then go about drafting the email, building a timeline of our business relations from the termination of his service on, point out every necessary change to service that may be contested, explain why he can’t be right and end with a threat of my own. I also include a screenshot of every quote from its original email. My rebuttal in its sent form reads as follows:
-------
“Hi Lord Farquaad, In your invoice today you mentioned that: "Had you told me or responded to any of the emails I sent out over the last month saying you were not continuing I could have removed you from our pull." Unfortunately for you, we have twice done this and have both in writing. First, November 29, 2016 you emailed to follow up on phone conversations and emails we had exchanged that week regarding the forfeiture of our spots in the Oak Bay and Victoria editions. As found in the screenshot attached below, it reads: "Thanks Cujaho Did you sell the listing we feature on the cover of the Victoria edition last time? Just to confirm you want us to sell your spots in Oak Bay and Victoria correct? [Random realtor] has expressed interest in taking your spot in the Oak Bay issue and will put a deposit on it Friday if you’re giving it up. So if you want back in later in 2017 as [Cujaho’s Boss] expressed to me you would be put back on the waitlist until someone drops out. Next issue Feb 5th 2017 Let me know what you want me to do." To which I replied: "We were able to sell the townhome yes. And that's correct, we would like to forfeit our Oak Bay and Victoria spots recognizing that there could be a waitlist if we try to get back in. I've confirmed the proofs with our marketing team and am just awaiting the print ready versions which will be sent to [Lord Farquaad’s assistant] the moment I have them. Best regards,
Cujaho" Then for the following issue, [Cujaho’s Boss] was emailed by [Lord Farquaad’s right hand woman] of your team on January 27, 2017 asking if he had received the email sent earlier in the week for his personal ad in the latest issue of BCLH - Oak Bay. Need I remind you this was the very next issue of the magazine that we had already confirmed that we were no longer interested in advertising in. Again, we confirmed that we were no longer interested in advertising. As can be seen in the screenshot attached below, it reads: "Good afternoon, I'm just checking to see if you received my below email from Tuesday regarding your ad in the [BCLH] Magazine - Oak Bay February 2017 issue? Just let me know if there are any changes to the attached ad below, and I can make them for you! We will need all changes in by January 31st, with final approval by February 2nd, as we are going to press on February 6th. Thank you!
[Lord Farquaad’s right hand woman] ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: [Lord Farquaad’s right hand woman] Date: Tue, Jan 24, 2017 at 8:57 PM Subject: BCLH Magazine - Oak Bay To: [Cujaho’s Boss] Good afternoon, We are currently working on updating personal ads for the next BCLH, Oak Bay Magazine. Please send any changes that you want done to your ad as soon as possible. I've attached your ad from the last issue. We will need all changes in by January 31st, with final approval by February 2nd, as we are going to press on February 6th. Thank you in advance! [Lord Farquaad’s right hand woman]" Along with [Cujaho’s Boss'] response: "Hi [Lord Farquaad’s right hand woman], We are no longer advertising in your publication at this time. Best regards, [Cujaho’s Boss] Sent from my iPhone" Since this exchange, [Cujaho’s Boss] nor myself have ever expressed interest in advertising in your publication. Moreover, as your format has changed and you have moved to an expanded issue with feature ads and small page ads, you have needed realtors to: "Respond or Call to register, your high end listings featured for $99.00 each." - as noted in your April 25, 2017 email (full screenshot attached below) which marked the first issue with the new change in publication format. We did not respond or call to register, and subsequently have never since for your July 10, 2017 issue and most recently the September 13, 2017 issue. In your August 24, 2017 email for the latest September issue, you changed your wording in the call to action. As can be seen in full in the attached screenshot below, the pertinent excerpt reads: "The next listing pull for the fall issue of BCLH is Sept 13th. If you're registered do nothing, if you'd like to register call or respond by Sept 12th. We pull all registered Realtor's high end listings Sept 13th" So when you say we should have replied to your email saying we weren't interested, I would counter with, what part of our multiple confirmations that we were terminating our advertising in your publication, as well as the fact that we have never called or responded to register with the new format, could lead you to believe that we were registered? Your decision to pull our listing, choose to advertise it and then try to invoice our thankfully discontinued credit card that you should no longer have on file is a massive breach of any ethical business practice. Should you not cancel this invoice within 48 hours, we will be reporting you to the Better Business Bureau with everything included in this email as well as the recording of the voicemail you left me today (September 20, 2017) at 10:50am threatening to send a collection service after us should we not settle the invoice. We understand that you have been harassing other agents in our office as well and are confident that should we have to move forward with reporting you, our already condemning experience in dealing with you will only be bolstered by other agents’ accounts of similarly unethical experiences with your business. We await your response, Cujaho”
-------
This is sent in the early afternoon and now I wait for Lord Farquaad’s reply. Maybe it’s the caffeine, maybe it’s knowing that I have my foot on a douchebag’s throat and that I’m not stepping off until he succumbs, but either way I am buzzing at this point. The Lord Farquaad types are always proud - think the type of proud to have photos with big pick up trucks behind them on social media - so having the opportunity to be the source of personal reduction for this real estate barnacle is undoubtedly going to be my champagne in victory. All that I’m waiting for is the impending email confirming his retreat from his prior held convictions as to how he can operate his business.
Two hours later Lord Farquaad finally replies:
-------
“Hi Cujaho
Yes that was for your full page ad which I sold off to another Realtor ages ago. Since then you’ve had your listings on the left positions which are 99.00 each. Anyway there is no time to replace your listings at such a late date so this invoice will remain outstanding. Your proof will be out tomorrow and I have removed you going forward. Have a great evening
Lord Farquaad”
-------
This is a classic hybrid of Lord Farquaad tactics. He is blatantly lying to me about already having used this advertisement format - unfortunate for him, as I have spent the morning reading every email we have ever exchanged both personally as well as on my boss’ account. He is acting as though it is too late - it’s never too late to not pay a counterfeit invoice. And then he is proceeding ahead as if I have to accept this outcome - I don’t.
And so I don’t.
-------
“Lord Farquaad,
We have never communicated interest or been invoiced for a listing in your updated format. We have made it explicitly clear that we were no longer interested in your product in November 2016 and again in January of this year and have done nothing to suggest a change to this position. This is an unacceptable response Lord Farquaad. We are not responsible for you adding our listings without our consent and trying to bill us with a credit card that you should not still have in your system. We have provided ample evidence of our discontinuation along with the fact that we have never tried to re-initiate any form of advertising in your publication. (You will not find and cannot show a piece of correspondence suggesting we have done so). It is not our concern that you have added our listings and it is now too late to replace them. The reality is that they should never have been in your publication in the first place, you choosing to do so does not make [Cujaho’s Boss] liable for your fraudulent invoice. We're not even interested in having our listings in your magazine regardless, you don't have permission to put them in and we have never authorized you to put them in. Please remove them.
Cujaho”
-------
A further hour passes and then Lord Farquaad finally relents:
-------
“Hi Cujaho
So I’ve looked at this carefully and spoken to [Lord Farquaad’s business associate], we will delete the invoice but your listings are in already so I guess your getting them for free. I’ll have a proof to you tomorrow let me know if you want any changes. At this point I can’t pull them so your getting them at no charge.
Lord Farquaad“
-------
And that’s how you get free ad space.

My Publishing Journey
I don’t know when I became a voracious reader, but by the time I was maybe ten, I had a hundred Scholastic books on my shelf. Reading very likely contributed to my desire to become an author. I don’t exactly remember either why I decided on the subject of my first book, but the more I became committed to the arcane topic the more I wanted to get my father’s story out there to preserve a dying tradition for my culture. With that in mind, in 1990 I wrote my manuscript, revised it, and gladly turned it over to a dear friend who was fluent in Spanish (some Spanish/Spanglish is included but most is also defined in context) so she could go over the whole thing. When I was pretty confident with the revisions, I printed it out and submitted it with my query to four publishers one at a time (I’d read somewhere that it wasn’t kosher to submit simultaneously.) When the first publisher kept it for three months, I began to feel optimistic; however, they sent it back with the rejection rationale that it read like more of a biography than a novel (guess they were looking for the novel). So I promptly sent it out again, and six weeks later received the second rejection; this time the reason was that it read more like a novel than a biography (guess they were looking for the bio that time). Anyway, two more rejections followed in the next few months. Snail mail made the entire process take about six months. Disheartened by my rejections, I put the whole project away and devoted my time and effort to my family and my career. Teaching English required so many hours of essay grading, lesson planning, taking courses to become a bilingual teacher, taking more courses to become an Advanced Placement teacher—the next two decades quickly passed. In 2014 several months after I retired, I decided I would try one more time to get my father’s story published. So with new fervor, I rewrote the entire manuscript, all 289 pages because the only draft I had was my old hard copy—printed on a Dot Matrix printer, no less—I’d used for submissions back in the ‘90s. Also, since it had been written with some program from the mid ‘80s and no PC currently has any portal for the old five-inch floppy disk the manuscript was saved on, what else could I do? So I typed my fingers off for the next few months, did some research on details I’d added, edited, revised, edited again until I was once more satisfied it was the best I could do. (It wasn’t.) What follows is a timeline of the process I’m still undergoing to get my book out there to the masses. 1. 4.16.16 I sent out queries only after researching what I needed to do to create a query destined to hook whomever read it. 2. 4.18.16 I received four acceptance emails from each publisher. After following up with each, I found that three wanted cash up front—one promised to help me self-publish for a little over $2K; two wanted about $1,500 up front; and the one I went with only asked that I purchase 200 copies of my own book at a 50% discount. If/when I sold them all, I’d double my profit. So I sent the last publisher my manuscript to see if he’d actually want to publish. 3. 4.19.17 I created my Facebook author page, linked it to my Tumblr blog and Twitter. At least once a month, I post a teaser to keep readers interested. 4. 4.20.16 I sent publisher my Facebook business page and Tumblr links so he could see the promotions I’d already started. I also sent my attachments to the manuscript: forward, afterward, dedication, and author bio. 5. 6.22.16 My publisher finished reading my manuscript and we decided to go forward. 6. 7.18.16 We discussed the contract. 7. 8.11.16 Publisher sent contract which I promptly forwarded to a lawyer for advice. 8. 8.18.16 I returned the signed contract to publisher after we discussed the lawyer’s concerns. 9. 8.30.16 Meanwhile as all this time was passing between emails, I had decided to go over my manuscript again and to my dismay discovered about 55 errors (a typo, redundant use of same word, personal preferences in changes to syntax or detail, and oh my goodness, a dangling modifier! How careless I’d been, thinking it was pretty perfect the first time.) I resent the corrected manuscript that would be also forwarded to the editor my publisher chose. 10. 9.15.16 This was the date my publisher and I agreed upon for all attachments. 11. 9.16.16 Editor emailed so we could get acquainted. 12. 9.21.16 Editor phoned and we exchanged information regarding manuscript. 13. 9.22.16 Publisher and I discussed through email photos to go with text and reader reviews. I snail mailed a request for a review from a well-known author, Rudolfo Anaya, who’d actually written me in the nineties when I asked for publishing advice. Another request went out to Barbara Villaseñor, owner of Charles Publishing in California, for permission to use the review she’d written back in the 90s also. 14. 9.23.16 I sent the publisher two positive and complimentary reviews I’d gotten back in the 90s. 15. 9.26.16 Editor emailed that she was in the midst of reading/editing the manuscript. 16. 10.13.16 Publisher acquired a well-known local artist to do the cover art. 17. 10.14.16 R. Anaya responded with his review and B. Villaseñor also replied that I could indeed use her review if I sent her a copy of my book. 18. 10.19.16 Editor sent me her notes. 19. 10.23.16 Editor returned the first edited manuscript. 20. 10.26.16 Cover artist sent her sketch. 21. 10.30.16-11.2.16 I went over editor’s comments, corrections, suggested changes. Reviewed the manuscript three times during this time period. 22. 11.15.16 Cover artist made the deadline for spring catalog with her first painting of my book cover. 23. 11.18.16 Sent the manuscript for the second time back to the editor. 24. 11.27.16 Editor sent some changes I rejected immediately. 25. 11.30.16 Well-known author James Santiago Baca is reading my manuscript to offer a review. 26. 12.9.16 Received amazingly detailed review from JS Baca and just about cried with joy. 27. 12.12.16 Editor reviewing attachments (foreword, etc.)/12/14 she returned them. 28. 12.20.17 Editor finished 2nd edit of manuscript. 29. 1.7.17 I emailed/messaged 12 famous authors for marketing advice. Within a week 4 replied with great suggestions. 30. 1.10.17 Cover artist finished book jacket completely. 31. 1.16.17 A Facebook friend, a follower of my author page Googled me and found my book up for pre-order on Mountain Press, my publisher’s book distributor. I emailed him with the news; he responded with a link to us on Amazon. 32. 1.16.-19.17 I put my 200 books up for pre-order on my Facebook author page linked to my personal page; they all “sold” in 4 days. 33. 1.17-21.17 We are now on Target, Goodreads, ETextbooksNow, Barnes & Noble, Fishpond (German), Bol (Dutch) websites. Created my author pages on Amazon and Goodreads. 34. 1.31.17 I started researching more marketing ideas and author support groups. Discovered a talented self-published author who is also a graphic artist. He created my bookmark, connected me to a colleague who made me 1,000 beautiful bookmarks; they’re made of durable card stock and glossy, vivid colors. 33. 2.23.17 My publisher returned my manuscript proofs in PDF format. I had a week to search for any typos/errors everywhere from chapter titles to font to photo captions. I also had to write captions for photos. 34. 3.2.17 My publisher informed me that I now have a Library of Congress number (meaning a copy of the physical book will be housed in the Library as well as having more copyright protection). Wow! 35. 3.6.17 My editor emailed that we’d done excellent proofing of the proofs 36. 3.9.17 My publisher is getting 8 galleys to deliver to reviewers, including NM magazines and book stores. NM and other states’ book sellers, including museum shops, will receive information, in not actual sales calls from representatives. 38. 3.10.17 My galleys arrived (two copies of uncorrected ARPs); Mike and I cried. 37. 3.13.17 I sent Karen (book club coordinator for Las Comadres in Denver) newsletter and 85 bookmarks for promotional purposes. 38. 3. 14.17 My publisher asked me to provide him with a list of places I’d like to go on a book tour. Oh my! My very good friend arranged a connection for me with the Citizens' Committee for Historic Preservation; my launch will be at their location in the first week of May; some of the artifacts in my possession will be displayed there for the entire month of May.
