JAYCE & INJURIES. headcanon series.

while in the anomaly, jayce endures a a traumatic leg injury from his hammer that is only exacerbated by the fall down the fissure. the hammer crashes just below his knee near the top of his tibia on his left leg. the weight of the hammer easily breaks the bone, very close to his knee, and with the fall, landing face first there's he further damaged his knee.

while in the fissure, he attempts to reset his knee to allow for some healing, but it doesn't heal spectacularly. tearing apart his hammer he's able to build himself a brace that helps support his knee and stabilize the lower half of his leg so he can climb out of the fissure. while it works, the pain is hardly bearable. the drive for survival is the only thing that keeps him climbing. when he reaches the top, he passes out from the pain. it's nearly a day before he gets back to his feet and starts to walk again.

the pain doesn't alleviate, he merely gets more used to it over time as he makes his way to the top of the hexgate. the walk itself causes some nerve damage, leading to some bouts of numbness and extreme pain. when mage viktor sends him back, the rune on the band around his wrist is embedded in his skin, a webbed, veiny like pattern surges beneath his skin. the coloring is a mix of reds/purples/blues. this continues to grow over time, and goes further up his arm. however, it doesn't go past mid-bicep.

when he returns from the anomaly, and is reunited with caitlyn, he eventually is forced into seeing a doctor very briefly and is fitted for another brace. he begrudgingly allows the doctor to help fit it, although he notes many ways to improve it. particularly after the years he'd spent tweaking viktor's brace. but he can admit, with the new brace he does feel slightly better support. the metal forced professionally rather than haphazardly bent with the help of a raw flame.

this is the brace he wears through the end of the series. beneath the brace and his pants the same rash on his arm begins to sprout on his leg. a side effect of his blood's exposure to the anomaly, and the hexcore's influence.

survival au

in the au in which jayce survives the show, he avoids seeing seeing a doctor and the confirmation that he'll never walk without a brace again. or at least he shouldn't. but eventually he does see a doctor, who says he may be able to improve his chances ... if they were to re-break the bone and reset it. however there were more risks than he was comfortable taking. instead he sticks to his brace.

while he doesn't walk with a cane often, he's given one for when he's tired, or the pain gets worse. he isn't in constant pain as time goes on, but some days are worse than others. on those days he'll have his cane. but in general he will stick to just taking weight off of his leg, or taking breaks as he needs them.

other things you may notice about him, physically, that are different:

the residual webbing/veiny rash from the hexcore's influence remain on his arm and leg, despite the fact the rune is gone. the rash blossoms other places on his body over time as well. like an infection. he's unsure if he should be worried about it or not.

where the rune was is now an indented scar in the shape of the rune.

jayce can often be seen standing slightly off kilter, taking pressure off his left leg.

when sitting, his braced leg is often kicked out or elevated for relief, but he does so in a very casual fashion in attempt to not concern anyone

JAYCE & AMBITION. headcanon series.

there is no question whether or not jayce is ambitious, or even ambitious to a fault. however, the origin and and motivation behind that ambition is somewhat debated.

jayce was born to a lower house, which didn't leave him with the same level of resources as others. they were working class, and their limited success was hard won. jayce's father had been the first to really cement any form of a legacy with his hammer, but that success left him as more of a hero to his son than anyone else. however, he didn't stop trying to have an impact, modeling this ambition for his son. he instilled in his son the importance of a legacy. after the death of his father, his mother told him that he was his father's greatest legacy. this only cemented jayce's determination to leave a legacy of his own.

inspired by how is father had helped build something great with his invention, jayce wanted to create something just as impactful. but looking at the world around him, and experiencing the differences in wealth distribution in his own city ... he wanted to to help every day people. as a child he visited the mines where they gathered the materials needed for the hammers, and the talis forge where the hammers were made. he witnessed the various people who worked the line, and he witnessed the outreach that was planned by his mother. offering opportunities, food drives, gatherings for those who worked there, and their families, and friends. from piltover or the undercity, and struggled to make ends meet.

after the death of his father, the outreach dissipated. not only was jayce left to grieve his father, but with no distraction. nothing to avoid feeling small, and helpless. the success of the family company wavering without his father, his mother just trying to keep it moving. but without the innovation, they could no longer expect to grow.

jayce doesn't know what to do, how to move forward from this. that is until he meets the mage. and after his experience with magic, he knew he had to find a way to use it to help people. that became is purpose. his life's greatest ambition. with no magical knowledge or ability of his own, he turned to what he did know. science. beginning even in childhood to begin brainstorming all the things he could do, all the things he could try.

while he tries, his plans are met with laugher or condecending pats on the head. no one believed he could do it, as he grew older his mother nearly begged him to let it go. to use his mind for something achievable. so he attempts to, or at least split his attention. he works towards other goals in his studies, managing to get sponsored to go to the academy, to continue to learn and grow. but he continues working towards hextech. focusing his studies on energy generation and utilization, mechanics and metals. anytime he brought up his goals to help those in the undercity and topside, he was met with scoffs and eye rolls. no one seemed to care, so he didn't dare mention he planned to do so with magic.

he spent the rest of his life working towards his goal. when he finally gets the chance to make strides, and gains a partner, he finally feels hope again. that he has a chance. and his ambition is cemented. but as time goes on, he's told that to reach his goals, he needs to play the game. a game he'd never had to play, nor wanted to. but he couldn't help but preen at the compliments that came with it. after years of his theories being dismissed, and his ongoing fear of never reaching goals, he falls into this new world.

while he still wanted to help more than anything, the voices of those around him were louder than those from the distant undercity. he found himself buckled under their fear and his ambition shifting to doing what he could for them. losing the heart of his invention, the dreams of a young boy.

he spends his whole life trying to help, but as he grows older ... he learns that no one can agree how to help. what the right answer is. with all the ambition to make change, he just keeps trying. not pausing to recognize the harm he was doing until it was too late.

i need to sleep but i’m thinking about how in the anomaly jayce is face to face with what happens to him. what viktor does to him. he watches as viktor touches his shoulder, and his alt self LOOKS TO HIS HAND before obeying. implying some level of conciousness.

i just think that’s fun to think about.

at 6:53 am thinking about how jayce started the show losing his greatest passion and then feeling as if he had nothing else to live for, only to in 2.07 wanting to live. wanting to live so much he resets a leg broken. tears apart his hammer with his bare hands to build himself a brace. climb out of a deep pit with s broken leg. trek accross a decolated city. all while facing the reality of what his dream had done. and even seeing all that, he didn’t give up.
