i finally finished the aeneid and even in the very last lines aeneas is absolutely haunted and hunted by destiny. i found it disturbing
in the iliad the presence of destiny is felt in the way the heroes throw themselves at fighting and death in the name of eternal fame, kleos etc, they are aware of what awaits them and they’re running toward it. achilles comes to troy knowing for certain that he will die, his destiny is inescapable but he is fine with that, he wants eternal glory, he will die for it, he accepts that before he even sets sail for troy. hector knows and accepts that his fate is intertwined with troy’s fate. aeneas is different from these other heroes, he wants glory of course like everyone else does but he never seems to want more than to defend troy. but after troy falls, he’s propelled forward by the will of the gods and nothing more. he wants to die in troy like hector and paris but the gods don’t want him to. they show him his destiny—to found rome—and he doesn’t want it, he tries to fight it. it never works.
he falls in love with dido, he starts to build homes for his people in her kingdom, the gods send messengers and portents to push him toward italy. he reaches acestes’s town and starts to build homes there and the gods send him messengers and portents again. he is always aware of his destiny and still he tries to settle down anyway! he keeps starting to build a home somewhere and has it ripped from him over and over!
when aeneas gets his special armor from aphrodite, there’s this really beautiful moment where aeneas looks upon the special shield created for him by the gods and sees upon it intricately carved patterns of stories of his future, the roman empire and all the heroes and achievements of people he will never know but has sacrificed everything for against his will. and he takes the armor and with it the “fate and fame of his descendants” even though he doesn’t know what that is. it’s sad reading on about the battle that he fights and loses so many faithful friends to later, fighting for rome and not knowing what rome is, a pawn of the gods until the very end of the poem
#i have so many feelings about aeneas!!!! he’s such a cool character!!#i love the end of the aeneid it’s almost a fuck you lol#i know this is mostly roman propaganda but having aeneas kill turnus while the man is on his fuckin knees was so good it felt like he was#taking back some of that power he acceded to the gods#also he’s very cute 😭 he really doesn’t know what’s going on#every time the gods show him the future (Caesar etc) he’s just like wow that’s….. something… 🫥 he has no idea what’s going on#I feel bad for him he’s just used by the gods in a way that achilles etc weren’t#anyway lol#im reading divine comedy next let’s just read all famous epic poems this year#the aeneid#the iliad#classics#aeneas

What’s your opinion on the iliad cast? Gods and mortals
Mortals/Demigods:
Hector: I think my thoughts on him are obvious lol. My true love (after Apollo) he’s just so good! Hehe not gonna go in detail it will be long
Paris: Originally wasnt a very big fan of him but after learning more about him (and his effeminate aspect), I have mixed feelings. Like I like him but some stuff he does is like
Aeneas: We didn’t see him for much, I was intrigued by his fate thing, then I read the Aeneid and now I’m sick of him
Sarpedon: I’m more interested in the impact than him cuz like. Zeus contemplating saving him which would go against Fate? Very interesting…
Achilles: So I like him as a character not a person. I think his story and arc is very intriguing but like. he killed and mutilated a child. In the kid’s dad’s temple. like. Much as I find his arc about shifting between divine and beast and ultimately realizing he’s human and cannot reject society interesting af I just cannot like him
Patroclus: Wish there was more about him! He seemed very interesting and strong, not the uwu kawaii boy I thought he was
Odysseus: Yoooo I fucking love this guy he’s so funny and clever let’s fucking gooo
Diomedes: On his own I dont care for him much, tho I feel bad about how Athena manipulated him he’s pretty great when he teams up with Odysseus, book 10 was wicked awesome
Aias: Stronk man goes brrrr
Menelaus: Really cool guy, wanna see more content about him cuz he seems so conflicted and betrayed aww
Agamemnon: Someone shoot him. Please
Helen: FUCKING QUEEN I already loved her and then I found out more about her and aaaaah she’s so good
Andromache: Aaaahhh I love her she deserved so much better
Cassandra: Would’ve loved to see more of her, her story is interesting
Penelope (I know she‘s from the odyssey but shhhh): YO SHES A QUEEN TOO she really outsmarted Odysseus she and him are OTP how she so big brain
Hecuba: She won me over when she begged Hector not to go fight Achilles
Priam: Interesting guy, wanna know more about him and why he seems to only care for Hector (trauma response after losing so many kids?)
Gods:
Apollo: I won’t dump here cuz you all know about that already. I really enjoyed seeing a darker, more divine aspect of Apollo. Really changed my perspective on him (which is an essay in of itself) and appreciate him a lot more and see him as more nuanced and complex
Artemis: We didn’t see much of her! But I can’t believe she got bitch slapped by Hera
Leto: So badass omfg
Hermes: Really pleasantly surprised by how kind he was to Priam. Loved seeing him as the “kind god”
Zeus: I’ve softened to him and really like to see how his position as a king makes him have to take harsh decisions. Fate makes me wonder how much control he really has
Hera: Badassssss. I really loved seeing her so manipulative and clever, it was really fun
Ares: I hate how Homer wrote him! Made him seem so pathetic and had everyone bully him
Athena: Ngl especially after writing my essay I don’t really like Athena? She’s manipulative but not in the fun Hera way
Aphrodite: My opinion on her dropped a little because of that one scene in book 3 where she forces Helen to sleep with Paris
Poseidon: He’s much more serious and scary than I thought, really awed by his sheer power
Hephaestus: Hate how everyone bullies him but damn does he make some cool stuff
Thetis: She’s such a good mom??? I wanna know more about her, like how she ended up married to Peleus

hey so I bet this has been said before, but I think a lot of people when they first hear Newt say “Fortune favors the brave, dude!” is an inversion on the common phrase, esp. in the military, “fortune favors the bold” which is very in line with Newton “Get out of the way, fascist” Geizler imo. The original “bold” phrase actually comes from the Aeneid, something I’ve been reading for class (fun :/) from Turnus (the bad guy essentially though I mean, he is fighting against the conquering of his land and people so now he’s a lot more sympathetic, more on that later). However I’ve been reading the Aeneid for class and in my translation (Stanely Lombardo for those who are interested, 10.341) features the phrase, “Fortune favors the brave” (the dude is omitted). After a quick Wikipedia search, I saw that there are a few variations between translations of the Latin which is “audentis Fortuna iuvat” but most agree on fortune favoring the brave/bold. Anyway, even though the meanings are similar, I think two things make this really interesting, esp. in terms of Pac Rim, being:
1) What is the difference between brave and bold, if there is one?
2) what does this make of newt’s inversion of the phrase?
It’s kind of funny that they are supposed to mean different things in pac rim, like it’s supposed to be subversive of Newt to say that. But they’re actually interchangeable in its origin, more than you would think. I think I’d disagree with the idea that the difference between bold and brave were insignificant. At the least, if there are different translations then I have a feeling there are a few academics who get really heated about the translation and have Opinions on the Latin that’d I’d never understand. But it’s worth considering if there’s a substantial difference between bold and brave. At least so you can feel Smart for having Thought about Something from the Aeneid.
The connection to Turnus is interesting too because although he is the antagonist to Aeneas, as more people figure out that Imperialism Bad I think more people are sympathetic to him, more than Aeneas. I mean some dude shows up, says give me your kingdom and cucks you? not cool Aeneas. Maybe this is saying something about Newt’s character, not necessarily in a pouty-boy/Draco/misunderstood way but more in a “here’s somebody who to many is an antagonist (read: nuisance) but from his place, is just defending himself” so I guess yeah it is a maybe pouty-boy/Draco/misunderstood thing or that’s just me. Maybe this is an allusion that parallels Turnus against Aeneas as the Earth and the PPDC against the Kaiju.
Furthermore, was this phrase supposed to be a call back to Turnus? and thus alluding to the worst thing that could happen to me, being Pac Rim: Uprising and Newt’s sympathetic vilification? (of course, GDT was not on PCU so it’s not definite, but then again, none of us know what he was planning anyway)
I know the pac rim fandom is as dead as Yancy but idk i just thought i’d share.

LAST SONG YOU LISTENED TO: Wish I had an angel (Nightwish).
FAVORITE MUSE ( S ) YOU’VE WRITTEN: I’d say Allen and Nea on here, Tenebrae and Aeneas from the Incarnations group, Yuki from the mixedblood group, and Aryn.
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO TAKE ON YOUR CURRENT MUSE ( THAT YOU ARE POSTING THIS ON ): I want to joke it was Allen himself. I first started getting ideas for a canon au, but I also felt not quite intidimated but certainly like I didn’t have a grasp yet on characters and especially on Allen who would be a center character. I found that there were active rpers, at first for Aryn, but I soon felt the interest of rping Allen (from my canon au). I was very hesitant, or shy you might say, and it was only when I figured out that parts of Allen’s character was similar to other muses of mine that I started getting an understanding.
I never expected to find myself working so well with Allen, but my love for DGM and for Allen inspired me well; and maybe there was a part where I related to quite a few aspects of Allen, initally making me feel like a bit “lost” until I realized, oh, I see, it’s just that I looked for someone different, but he’s similar to me. And also he’s very complex, and maybe I wanted to develop this, learn to know Allen.
I also didn’t quite expect to have Nea become a muse himself, but now it feels like it’s not just Allen, but also Nea, that I have taken up. And in a manner working so well with how Nea is, I had to first bond well with Allen before I bonded with Nea (but funnily enough, there are some parts of Nea I deeply relate to as well).
WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE ASPECTS OF YOUR CURRENT MUSE: Allen is such a complex character, the littlest difference in settings, wording, actions, etc can cause a different reaction from him. He has so many things to work through, and yet so much love and hope that he subconsciously bubble to share and give. Nea, for his part, isn’t one to open up easily, tends to not really care about others, but when he does, he does it deeply. He kind of goes from 0 to 100 very fast, which is so fun to explore when Allen is a bit opposite, Allen can open some to most, but he rarely allows anyone to see his heart for good.
Well, they are both similar on this, Allen and Nea both don’t easily allow people deep into their heart, but Allen is more willing to offer some trust, yet it takes a while before he’ll fully care. Nea, he won’t easily offer trust, but if he starts to do it, he easily goes fast in caring more and more. In a sense, Nea is also more vulnerable than Allen. Nea has a soft heart that can easily be hurt, so he doesn’t allow that to be seen.
I love my soft boys hiding behind masks or external attitude okay
WHAT’S YOUR BIGGEST INSPIRATION WHEN IT COMES TO WRITING: Generally music, especially matching the mood I’m looking for (or a “lets work” mood), reading, when I see my friends replies, sometimes when I’m reading other fandom fics or gaming it’ll end up making me get energized and inspired for Allen.
FAVORITE TYPES OF THREADS: I love fluff, not gonna lie. I also love anything that allows Allen and Nea to learn to trust, or to be vulnerable, but also anything that shows their protective nature. I love threads that build bonds, too.
BIGGEST STRUGGLE IN REGARDS TO YOUR CURRENT MUSE: Allen has so much love and yet so much fears, it is sometimes hard seeing through what he would truly share and what he wouldn’t. He is changing too, the core part of my portrayal is how being on the run is changing him, and then how truths he’ll learn will affect him. Then there’s Nea who has so many hopes and goals, but needs to balance it out for fear he’ll mess up. Sometimes I have to pause to ask myself what he can or cannot share, and the same goes for Allen.
There’s also how Allen struggles with accepting he does care for some of the Noahs, and accepting he isn’t comfortable within the Order’s walls anymore (or at least as long as he knows Central and Leverrier can do things), without forgetting his fear that his friends won’t understand if he shows his care toward the Noahs. Nea, for his part, struggles with guilt, both from what he did, and from knowing he will do what he has to do to make it all work out.
I guess my muses’ struggles are also my own; although myself, I don’t feel like I struggle. Stuff like not being inspired or energizing isn’t about the muses themselves, so it isn’t quite in regards to them. I don’t struggle to write them specifically, and the only struggles I face are more toward what they struggle themselve with.
