First Note of Love 10/12 A quiet pleasant rest something to put on while relaxing.

Kidnap 6/12 Unlike Battle of the Writers which never pretended to have any real plot this one has taken until now to say that that the story is a secondary concern to the action taking place on screen.

The Hidden Moon 6/10 The amount of time that Khen is spending in the plane of existence that has Mas in it becomes so long that if he is still alive he must be close to death. Even the short bursts of reminder that he had a car accident get brushed away.

Jack & Joker: U Steal My Heart! 4/12 I love how they approach this. The „realistic“ heists, the emotional reaction, the effects of knowing that people care about you

Love is Like a Poison 5/10 Getting the confirmation that Haruto conned himself with the colours emerging even more was very satisfying.

Love Sick 2024 5/15 There are some good actors in this but the production feels too big for how it chooses to focus

Smells Like Green Spirit 3/9 We got to see Futoshi and Makoto newfound friendship but while I can see Futoshi as this slightly oblivious careless character Makoto seems a bit too relaxed and not vigilant enough.

What Comes after Love 4/6 I love the melancholy. the wintery reminicence on what was, missed opportunities and what could have been. And the meta threat of a fix all happy ending

Our Golden Times 5/? This is a an old-school BL in the way women are depicted. Its a nice watch but …

Teenager Judge 3/? O2 could tell their stories so much more effectively and within budget if they cut dow on episode time

Fourever You 2/16 It looks good. Very much Thai university BL but if I couldnt hope for a Love in the Air two in one (or even four in one) series. A second episode scenery trip would have me worried.

Uncle Unknown 4/12 Exploring Taiwan’s favourite taboo subject. The delayed reveal feels a bit too much like they are stretching out the story instead putting effort into the emotional investment for the conflict

Heavens x Candy 03.10.24 7,5/10 Liberation and growth through intimacy. A ccoming of age story told through sex scenes.

Senior and Junior 06.10.24 6/10 Such a mess the characterisation is so all over the place the characters forget what stage of their relationship they are from one scene to the next.

White Ego 06.10.24 6,5/10 Basic tragic love story with death of a partner and the late realisation of their parent with subsequent reconciliation with their childs lover

Love Next Door 07.10.24 6/10 The break at episode 10 made it shallow and then they didnt even go for full cheese in the finale.

Tengu's Kitchen 09.10.24 9/10 A beautiful series about growing and connections and giving yourself the time to be yourself.

Couple of quick updates on the Old GMMTV Challenge!

1) I’m writing up my analysis of Together With Me, and I have WAY more thoughts than I expected. Review dropping Monday!

2) I made a chronological boo-boo in my watchlist, which I’ll explain on Monday -- I switched TwM and Make It Right 2 unintentionally. So I’m catching up on MIR2 as much as I can this weekend to get as much comparative material as possible for my TwM review.

But that being said, one thing I’d like to fact-check is the following:

I’m trying to figure out exactly where the PeteKao scenes from Kiss The Series and Kiss Me Again fall. I’m going to be watching the three PeteKao cuts from the GMMTV YT channel, but.... should I watch them altogether as one package? Or should I try to piece them together chronologically, from 2016 (Kiss The Series) through 2018 (Kiss Me Again)? I feel like I’m making this too complicated, and should just watch them all in one go -- but wondering if fam has opinions on this.

3) Speaking of opinions...

Part of my review of TwM talks about the context of what else was airing and had aired at the time of TwM’s airing. That’s kind of why I wanted to construct the watchlist (pasted below) the way that it is -- to get context from what I previously watched.

So I was digging through MDL to see what else was airing in 2017, and.... SOTUS S came up.

I had previously vowed to NOT watched SOTUS S because I feel like I’m still recovering from Krist’s acting in SOTUS. BUT:

I’m wondering if I need to a) get over myself, and b) watch SOTUS S specifically for the point of watching an early-ish BL that deals with an ongoing relationship, as opposed to a new relationship blossoming. 

MIR2, at least in the early episodes, does NOT go there (yet), because of dang Jean and Fuse. Was SOTUS S the first big Thai BL that dealt with an ongoing, maturing relationship?

I’m having an ongoing conversation with @bengiyo and friends about the popularity of shows that depict growing relationships vs. brand-new love, and -- I think/wonder if including this theme on my list might be important. (Especially because I love this theme so damn much in What Did You Eat Yesterday?/Kinou Nani Tabeta.)

Thoughts on SOTUS S -- would love them if you have ‘em, family!

MY SPRING 2021 ANIME WATCHLIST🌼🌈✨

Spring is officially starting and what a marvelous season we have ahead. Full of great anime continuations and some news that I’m really looking forward to. Since I post practically every review (only Horimiya left) here I present you my Spring 2021 watchlist:

1. Boku no Hero Academia 5th Season (27/03). Can y’all hear me screaming?😭 Finally, our heroes are back and I couldn’t be more excited. Many friends told me this season would be really amazing and I can’t wait! Bones studio is still in charge of the series so we will continue having a great animation. Genres: Action, Comedy, Super Power, School, Shounen.

2. Koi to Yobu ni wa Kimochi Warui (29/03). A strange encounter spurs the meeting of Amakusa Ryou, a high spec businessman, and his high school sister's best friend, Arima Ichika. From there, he falls madly in love and tries to approach her, while she responds simply disgusted, insulting him without hesitation. Can this be a nice shoujo anime? We’ll see. Studio Nomad is doing the work, I haven’t seen their previous work but the trailer animation looks nice. Genres: Comedy, Romance.

3. Jouran: The Princess of Snow and Blood (31/03). An original and first series by Bakken Records. Set in alternate history Japan in 1931 the anime will follow the activities of "Nue," an organization of shogunate executioners who enforce the government. The dissident organization Kuchinawa strives to overthrow the administration, while the Nue of the Tokugawa regime, which was entrusted with its extermination, is in conflict. Sawa Yukimura, whose family was killed when she was young, continues to search for Janome, the executioner of the Nue. I don’t usually enjoy historical anime but hopefully, this would be good. Genres: Action, Historical, Supernatural.

4. Shaman King - 2021 (1/04). Can believe this actually got a remake, which I’m really really excited for. In a brief, Shamans are extraordinary individuals with the ability to communicate with ghosts, spirits, and gods. To life circumstances You befriends Manta due to his ability to see spirits, they set out to accomplish You's goal of becoming the next Shaman King. Studio Bridge is in charge, the ones behind my all-time favorite “Fairy Tail” ^^. Genres: Action, Adventure, Supernatural, Comedy, Shounen.

5. Mashiro no Oto (3/04). Lowkey I’m expecting this to be as good as “Kono Oto Tomare. Shin-Ei Animation is the studio behind this and they’ve worked in the Doraemon and Shin-chan movies. The story follows Sawamura Setsu, since their grandfather's death, he dropped out of high school, moved to Tokyo, and has been drifting, not knowing what to do besides playing his Shamisen. That's when his successful and rich mother, Umeko, storms into his life and tries to shape Setsu up. She enrolls him back into high school, but little does Setsu know that he is about to rediscover his passion for Shamisen. Genres: Music, Drama, School.

6. Hige wo Soru. Soshite Joshikousei wo Hirou (5/04). Project no.9 the studio of Jaku-chara is bringing a more dramatic story this season. Office worker Yoshida has been crushing on his coworker, Airi Gotou, for five years. Despite finally scoring a date with her, his confession is promptly rejected. Drunk and disappointed, he stumbles home, only to find a high school girl sitting on the side of the road. The girl, needing a place to stay the night, attempts to seduce Yoshida. Despite rejecting her advances, he nevertheless invites her into his apartment. Genres: Drama, Romance

7. Fruits Basket: The Final (6/04). If I started talking about this anime and how excited I am I will never stop talking. I’m ready to cry, get flustered, angry, and be happy. I’m sad but at the same time happy that the story is ending I’m dying to see the zodiac members at least feeling peaceful. Genres: Slice of Life, Drama, Romance, Shoujo, Comedy, Supernatural.

8. Shadows House (11/04). CloverWorks is doing this one and it would probably be beautifully animated. The story is about faceless shadow nobles living in a vast mansion, attended by living dolls who spend much of their time cleaning up the soot endlessly emitted by their mysterious masters. It's not horror but I like the creepy vibe. Hope is good. Genres: Slice of Life, Supernatural, Seinen.

9. Edens Zero (11/04). My Fairy Tail heart is singing of joy. J.C.Staff is animating the series so we know it would be good. Ever since the manga came out I started immediately. It’s really good so I hope people enjoy it without being too critical about the resembles of Fairy Tail. Here is a brief: At Granbell Kingdom, an abandoned amusement park, Shiki has lived his entire life among machines. But one day, Rebecca and her cat companion Happy appear at the park's front gates. Little do these newcomers know that this is the first human contact Granbell has had in a hundred years! 10. Tokyo Revengers (11/04). I really don’t know what to expect from this since LIDENFILMS has done some pretty awful or uninteresting works, but the trailer looked very cool. Our mc is Takemichi Hanagaki, his life is at an all-time low. Just when he thought it couldn't get worse, he finds out that Hinata Tachibana, his ex-girlfriend, was murdered by the Tokyo Manji Gang: a group of vicious criminals that has been disturbing society's peace for quite some time. Wondering where it all went wrong, Takemichi suddenly finds himself traveling through time, ending up 12 years in the past—when he was still in a relationship with Hinata. Realizing he has a chance to save her, Takemichi resolves to infiltrate the Tokyo Manji Gang and climb the ranks in order to rewrite the future and save Hinata from her tragic fate. Genres: Action, Drama, School, Shounen.

11. Fumetsu no Anata e (12/04). I think this is the most expected new anime for this season, and one of the most visually beautiful this season. Follows the story of It, a mysterious immortal being, is sent to the Earth with no emotions nor identity. However, It is able to take the shape of those around that have a strong impetus. Acquiring the form of a boy, It sets off on a never-ending journey, in search of new experiences, places, and people. Genres: Adventure, Supernatural, Drama, Shounen.

12. Marimashita! Iruka-kun 2nd Season (17/04). Yes yes yess. So we finally are going to find out what happened to Iruma-chi at the end of the first season. I’m really excited to see everyone again ^^ if you haven’t seen season 1 I invite you to do it and you can also read my review under this anime hashtag ^^ Genres: Comedy, Demons, Supernatural, School, Fantasy.

With the manga receiving much praise, probably one of the most anticipated anime adaptations for 2021 is Tokyo Revengers. Motivated by tragedy, Takemichi Hanagaki finds himself in the past, climbing the ranks of the Tokyo Manji Gang in order to change destiny. He may not appear the toughest, but he's determined to get through the intense situations he finds himself in.

      10. To Your Eternity

Knowing this is a story from Yoshitoki Oima, creator of A Silent Voice, To Your Eternity, will surely be an adventure that tugs on your heartstrings. Audiences will witness an intimate journey of life and death revolving around an emotionless orb with no identity but can take the shape of those around it. A Shaman King reboot was the best present fans of the original series could've gotten as the title just marked its 20th year since the show premiered back in 2001. Fans will be transported back to their childhood, all the while looking forward to a new story that reflects the manga. The series recently aired in April in Japan, and fans in North America can expect to watch the series sometime later this year.

  If you've been searching for a romance anime unlike any other, then you should watch Horimiya if you haven't already. This series takes everything you know about anime romance tropes, and delivers a series of fresh new twists, making for a warm and cozy viewing experience.

    13. Anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day

If in between all the action and comedy you need a good slice of life series about friendship, Anohana is the series for you!       14. The Rising of the Shield Hero Season 2

Thinking he'd be the hero in this new fantasy world, Naofumi Iwatani ended up being hated, shunned, and stigmatized at the beginning of The Rising of the Shield Hero Season 1. But as he journeyed on, he developed genuine relationships, gained valuable trust, credibility, and gratitude from others.   18. The Wallflower

A little bit of nostalgia is nice to mix into your anime watchlist. If you're a fan of Ouran High School Host Club, then you'll love The Wallflower! It's got some handsome boys, a cute and quirky girl with a fascination for all things dark and scary, and all the ridiculous antics of a harem!

      19. Death Parade

Death Parade has stayed under the radar, but it at least deserves to be on YOUR radar. A story about the afterlife where a bar represents limbo and its bartender decides the fate of the souls in front of him whether they experience reincarnation, or disappear into the void by playing a game. This is a psychological, thought-provoking drama with some mystery, as we don't know the true nature of the people in the bar, or what led them to where they are. Those secrets will eventually be revealed as the game plays on.

    20. Puella Magi Madoka Magica

Like Hunter X Hunter, this year also marks the 10-year anniversary of Puella Magi Madoka Magica. Madoka was and to this day still is a defining series that was a real game-changer for the magical girl genre, showing just how much danger magical girls face. It's a must-watch if you haven't already, so make a contract with yourself to watch or re-watch this series sometime in 2021.  

    21. How To Keep A Mummy

  How To Keep A Mummy is a heartwarming episodic series to watch when you want to have a feel-good time! Friends and classmates spend time together with their mythical creature companions: A precious, tiny mummy who anytime he holds anything will make your heart melt, a somewhat hot-headed but caring oni, a clever dragon, and a fluffy baku. After catching up on everything on your watch list, have fun with this series to round out 2021.

Regrets, Consequences, Redemption, LIMBO This series makes a strong case for how choices influence our lives and if we dont make choices life wont be better. Simplistic solutions only work in fantasy

👩‍🏭 If one of your fics was going to get you arrested, which one and why?

OH BOY. To be completely honest, my original writing is what’s most likely to get me arrested. I swear I’m on some FBI watchlist, after writing a couple mystery stories (hello 15 open tabs on murderers, weapons, poisons, etc). But let’s see... for fanfic... I’ve written some questionable stuff there too XD I’ve got a pretty violent TUA story coming up at some point that takes place during Five’s time at the commission. It’s set in either the late 1930s or early ‘40s, and a job goes a little wrong. Let’s just say it gets messy. I might tone it down a little before I post, but that depends on what I want the focus of the story to be on. we’ll see.

This is from what’s either going to be a flashback in my ‘living between the lines’ series or a stand-alone story, I haven’t decided yet. Five is about 17/18 years old here, and for context, there’s a huge storm, and Five got stuck in a building collapse.

He pounded against the rubble and let out a scream. He wasn’t sure why. There was no one to hear him. He was completely and utterly alone. Hot hears began rolling down his cheeks and he pounded his fist against the rubble. He couldn’t afford to lose water like this. Even with the rain there was no telling if it was acidic or drinkable. But once the tears started he couldn’t stop. And long after they had dried up, his body shook with dry sobs. He didn’t have enough water in his body to keep up the crying for long but his body clearly thought otherwise. He shouted for Dolores and received no answer. He cursed and tried to move his leg again, rewarded with another shock of pain. “Why don’t you jump?” His eyes flew open at the voice and his head whipped around as much as it was able. “What?” “You’ll have to jump, Number Five.” The flashlight suddenly flickered and dimmed. Five’s heart jumped and he gripped it tighter. “No no nononono not now you stupid piece of shit.” As if purely to spite him, the light flickered and went out. Five froze. He sat in complete and utter darkness for the space of three breaths. Then he reached out and started frantically pushing against the largest price pinning his leg to the ground. His breaths were jagged and frantic and his chest heaved with sobs, which was making this even more difficult. Hot anger burned in his chest. He wasn’t going to die here. He couldn’t. “What did I tell you Number Five,” a voice cut through the panic. It was hard, almost emotionless. He knew that voice. He hated it. “I told you that you were not ready and look at you now. Your siblings died, trapped under their own piles of rubble.” Five pounded his fists against the rebar, ignoring the blinding pain that shot up his leg. “It’s rather fitting don’t you think? That you’ll be buried under it as well?”

🧠 What’s an idea you have that you can’t quite call a WIP yet?

I’ve got a lot of random scenes, but finding a plot to go along with them is the hard part XD

One is an idea for introducing Mr. Pennycrumb to the 'between the lines' series. I don’t want to give away the plot, but basically Five discovers that he can’t adopt a dog by himself, looking like a 13-year old, so he begrudgingly enlists the help of his siblings XD

Another that I’m really excited about ( @winter-came knows about this one XD) is Five having a pretty intense flashback to an incident with the Handler after something Allison does triggers him. His siblings aren’t sure what caused it and it and there’s a little bit of chaos as they try and fail to help.

The Autumn Watchlist

1. Melting Me Softly (starts September 28) | teaser

My feelings about this drama kept constantly changing in the past months. At first, I had been excited about the collab between Ji Chang Wook (HEALER FOREVER!), the SWDBS writer and the Secret Garden PD. Then, they announced Won Jin Ah to be the female lead and my excitement dropped by a notch because I belonged to those who weren’t impressed by her performance in Just Between Lovers and even the first teasers left me with mixed feelings. However, a few days ago the long trailer dropped and I’m fully on board and halfway in love with the show. It has the trademark writing of Baek Mi Young, JCW is epic as ever and WJA seems to hold her own against him and furthermore, they both share amazing chemistry and have a huge potential as the two people who get together stuck/frozen together in time while the whole world passes them by, only to wake up and realize that 20 years have gone by. They have not only to face the same challenges of dealing with the consequences but also their own physical condition as they must maintain a core body temperature of 31.5 degrees Celsius which in the era of global warming might not be the easiest thing to do, plus I can think of several physical activities when...

2. The Tale of Nokdu (starts September 30) | teaser 01, teaser 02, teaser 03

There is nothing new about a crossdressing kdrama, not even a sageuk one, but a man, and one of the best swordmen in Joseon to boot, doing the undercover crossdressing is something completely special. Moreover, he even poses as a widow and has all the men swooning over him and wooing him. With Joseon Marriage Agency being such a huge letdown for me, I have high hopes for this one. One of the writers is responsible for Love in the Moonlight and I think The Tale of Nokdu might maintain the magic which LitM lost the moment it got lost in the political mess. I like KSH very much and Jang Dong Yoon looks like he is having the time of his life playing the crossdressing nobleman.

3. Extraordinary You (starts October 2) | teaser

A high-school student from a wealthy family who suffers from a lifelong heart condition that inevitably means she will not live past her teenage years suddenly realizes that  she is a character in a Korean webtoon and all of her actions are predetermined by the artist who draws her. If her luck weren’t bad enough she also discovers she is only a supporting character so she decides to change her own plotline. This might end up being either slapstick awesome with all the possibility for kdrama references and making fun of all the clichés or utter mess. I hope for the first.

4. My Country (starts October 4) | teaser

What can I say? It looks like my dream sageuk - gritty, complex, dark and absolutely visually stunning plus it boasts some stellar cast. Also I don’t know how but for some reasons the drama is giving me Slave Hunter vibes - maybe because of the slave element, overall grittiness and JH being all intense and the main lead’s look reminding me a little bit of JH’s character in Slave Hunters.

5. TharnType The Series (starts October 7) | teaser 01, teaser 02

I can’t even describe how much I’m excited for this one. Type, the dark, tall and handsome freshman is homophobic because he was molested by a man as a child. His life turns up side down when the new year of college brings along a very interesting person in his life, a gay roommate, Tharn. Tharn, is a very handsome music major with fair skin and mixed features who is openly gay. Type is a minor character who had a minor role in another favourite Thai BL drama of mine, Love by Chance. At first, I was disappointed they didn’t cast the original actor; however, I have to say I have never been more happy to be proven wrong because the actors playing Type and Tharn have without a doubt the most awesome chemistry between all the couples in the upcoming BL Thai shows, only comparable with Pete and Kao.

6. Dark Blue Kiss (starts October 12) | teaser

PETE AND KAO!!! I’ve been waiting for this drama for a year now! To be honest, I don’t really care for the secondary couple I just want to watch Pete and Kao being utterly perfect for each other.

7. Ore no Hanashi wa Nagai (starts October 12) | teaser

It’s been ages since I enjoyed a jdrama and I hope Ikuta Toma changes it as the failed 31 year-old NEET living with his mother.

8. HIStory3: Make Our Days Count (starts October 16) | teaser

Another installment of the successful HIStory franchise. Crossing Boundary is with Together With Me my favourite BL drama of all time and I can’t wait for the movie. On the other hand, Trapped was a mild disappointment for me because somewhere in the middle the writer gave up any pretense that there was actually any plot and the only reason I kept watching until the end was the OTP. Make Our Days Count is a BL high school love story between two polar opposites - the bookish Yu Xi Gu who prefers to keep a low profile and focus on his schoolwork and the outgoing, hot-headed extravert and some-time bully Xiang Hao Ting. I’m not even ashamed to admit I love these kind of stories.

Introduction

Starting a new TV series is a bit like starting a new relationship.

First, you meet them. Sometimes they’ve been around for a while, everyone keeps talking about them, and your curiosity pushes you to check them out yourself. Other times, you meet them randomly, and it feels like it was meant to be. With a twist of fate, or of algorithms, they show up in your recommendations and it feels like love at first sight.

The pilot is the first date : you have twenty minutes to an hour to get to know them, and to figure out if you want to take the journey further or not. 

If you do decide to take it further, you proceed to the honeymoon phase. They’re perfect, they’re all you want to talk about, and you end up spending two days with them, without interruption. After that, it can stay amazing throughout, or you can get tired of them.

Little by little, you stop replying to the notification telling you a new episode or season is out, you push them to the end of your watchlist, you leave them hanging, and before you know it, you’ve ghosted them. 

My name is Camille, I’m 22 years old, and according to an app in which I track all the shows I watch, I have spent 3 months, 17 days and 14 hours watching TV series for a total of around 4000 episodes watched. 

It sounds like a lot, I know. However, with all that time spent face to face with my screen, there are still many shows I have never managed to finish.

In this blog, I share with you eight shows that I have ghosted with more or less remorse, and try to explore the reasons why my interest for them has faded away.

how did you get into polygon?

my friend got me into the mcelroy family around 2017 and i’d been watching exclusively monster factory and the jackbox videos since then. then around february 2019 i discovered both brian’s personal channel and unraveled at around the same time, and that’s what finally got me to check out the rest of polygon’s content

who’s your fave group (cyberpunk crew, overboard regulars, gill & gilbert (as a general duo), etc.)?

i love everyone on the channel so much but when pat, brian, and simone get together à la e3 2018 it’s just *chef’s kiss*

what polygon series have you been into recently?

lately? everything that was on my immediate watchlist i’ve finished so i’ve been rewatching unraveled while i cook. i haven’t seen awful squad or week in revue yet so just imagine it’s a few days in the future and my answer is one of those

fave cyberpunk overboard character?

overplayed answer, but burger chainz. i didn’t expect to love him but he broke into my heart within seconds. while we’re on the subject though, i very much appreciate that i can’t tell whether i want dapper dasha or i want to be her. six feet tall? that rich alto voice? a taste for the finer things in life? divine. and vang0 just sucks which is incredibly fun and sexy of him

fave unraveled?

this is such a hard question, but my dumb ass is particularly fond of the ones that hit too close to home (sims, perfect pokérap, etc. (now introducing: stamina!!))

favourite polygon moment/meme/in-joke?

well i do love working “it’s good content tara” into my vocabulary. also this isn’t a recurring bit but in that one video about video game lawsuits jenna kept joking about stealing the hollywood sign and it stuck with me. not a day goes by that i don’t think about jenna stoeber’s hollywood sign heist

a random series of theirs that you just think is… neat?

well video game theatre, to no big surprise. i feel i should say that it’s not my favorite series, i quite literally do just think it’s neat. maybe it’s the quarantine talking and the desire for human contact, but my favorite for the past few months has been overboard

three fun facts about yourself (be they related or completely unrelated to polygon)

-i study french and if all goes according to plan, in a year’s time i’ll be certified as fluent

-i play violin, guitar, and i sing, and i’m planning on majoring in music education when i get to college

I’m glad to have gotten to so much this year, but job inconsistencies have rendered my book consumption inconsistent (I listen to audiobooks while performing physical tasks). I also fell short of my goal of 52 books, but I only developed that goal in June/July. 

I’ll aim to hit the target in 2020, with a focus on texts relating to foreign policy, military matters, and leadership skills for nonfiction and...no particular focus in fiction.

Top of the Bops: the 18 Best Anime Opening Songs of 2018

At the end of every year, I like to do some sort of retrospective list about the media I've been enjoying over the past year, and since most of the media I've consumed this year happens to be Japanese anime, I decided to focus on something near and dear to me: sweet, slappin anime opening themes. I've compiled 18 of the best opening theme songs from 2018 into a list of Japan's best TV bangers this year.

NOTE: While I did give extra points to some songs for fitting the tone of their show or for enhancing the show experience, this list is not really focused on the quality of the shows these songs are from but rather on whether the song is great to listen to. Also, I am by no means an expert on the genre, just a lady who watches too much anime.

18 - "Kiss of Death" from Darling in the Franxx This song always stood out to me as a terrific moodsetter and got me more excited than the plot did during those first few eps of Darling in the Franxx. Sexy, melodic and upbeat, with those moody moody vocals, "Kiss of Death" did its job as a worthy hype man for this mecha anime.

17 - "Heading to Over" from Free! Dive to the Future Free! has always, always, ALWAYS had these wonderful, insanely aggressive, and super catchy power rock songs as their openings...despite the fact that the show's plot is constantly running on the lowest stakes. The opening songs always feel like some terrible lie about what you're going to watch, in my opinion. That it even made my list despite my dislike of Free! is a testament how good this opening song really is.

16 - "Power to the Dream" from Fairy Tail This is not the best Fairy Tail opening. It's probably not even top three, but that's because Fairy Tail has an absolute embarrassment of riches when it comes to catchy openings. The long-running series’s final season starts off with another good one.

15 - "Adabana Necromancy" from Zombie Land Saga This opening has been cited by many as one of the best of the year. It's a madcap zany opening credits sequence that's as wild and entertaining as the show itself. "Adabana Necromancy" is catchy but maybe not as much of an ear worm as some of the other songs on the list (or other songs within Zombie Land Saga). However, it's sung by Franchouchou, the fictional zombie girl band at the center of the show, and I'm a sucker for songs by fake bands.

14 - "Dark Sun..." from Persona 5 the Animation The one constant between all the Persona games and series is incredible genre stylization. While the first opening "Break In to Break Out" was a nod to the mood and style of Persona 5, I think the second opening embraces this more fully and is the superior song because of that. It is a cool, cool bop.

13 - "Spatto! Spy & Spyce" from Release the Spyce I have yet to start Release the Spyce, but this opening is so terrific. It's catchy and cute as shit. This type of girly pop tune definitely doesn't dominate my Best of 2018 list, but that genre of opening has its place in anime. I had the option to include the Magical Girl Ore opening, for example, but I kept that off the list because it's funny and cute but not 100% easy on the ears. This hits every note of being cheeky and charming and catchy AF.

12 - "Deadly Drive" from Bungou Stray Dogs DEAD APPLE Yes, this is technically a movie opening, and yes, maybe that's cheating. But! DEAD APPLE really functions like a long episode of BSD, complete with integrated opening credits. This song rocks so hard and fits well in the canon of Bungou Stray Dogs openings by being a little bit grim, a little bit rough and very, very catchy.

11 - "Fighting Gold" from Jojo's Bizarre Adventure Part 5: Golden Wind This is the James Bond opening of anime theme songs. It is Dramatic with a capital D, and I love it.

10 - "Howling" from Seven Deadly Sins This marked the second collaboration between shonen music all-stars FLOW and GRANRODEO, following their successful team up on the Seven Deadly Sins season one closing song. And just like that song "Howling" does not disappoint. A song to get you real hype about full-blooded adventure. Hey! Get low! Hey! Howling!

9 - "Lonely Go!" from Boruto: Naruto Next Generation I am really mad that this opening is so catchy and the animation is so wonderful because I don't want to give this show the free press, but here we are. This is a fucking good opening. *grumble*

8 - "katharsis" from Tokyo Ghoul:re Tokyo Ghoul has struggled in the past to capture the perfect tonal match that their first opening found in "Unravel," so the clear solution was to get another song out of the same artist. While I am also a big fan of the first :re opening, this one is just flat out better.

7 - "Guess Who is Back" from Black Clover BRB, starting a petition to have Koda Kumi sing every anime opening forever. I was a huge fan of the water temple arc and its funky little banger of an opening theme.

6 - "Freedom" from Banana Fish I had a really hard time choosing between Banana Fish's two rock influenced angst anthems, but at the end of the day, only one of them regularly makes me scream sing along to the chorus.

5 - "Clear" from Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card Peak sweet shoujo tunes. Maaya Sakamoto at her very best. I swear this isn't my CLAMP bias showing--I think Clear Card arc was more than a little boring in execution, but this song is great.

4 - "Winding Road" from Golden Kamuy I have yet to watch Golden Kamuy, but I have heard a lot of good things. When researching options of this list, I was pleasantly surprised to hear this song since it has everything I want in an adventure show opening. With a driving drum line and catchy melody you can really wail along to, the music perfectly compliments the stunning opening visuals. The credits have me convinced that this is one I need to get on my watchlist immediately. (And I've already listened to it a lot of times on loop :X)

3 - "ODD FUTURE" from My Hero Academia I KEEP MY IDEALS BLAAAALAHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!

2 - "Man Human" from Devilman Crybaby If anything had a chance of slapping as hard as the number one song...point deduction for having only two lyrics. But I refused to let my friends skip it when we watched through.

1 - "Flashback" from Kokkoku It's been a long time since an anime opening slapped this hard. Even if that anime was a weird-but-interesting one off with a lackluster ending.
