So I we started to watch Attack on Titan again after many years and Iāve just finished season two and before starting season three I wanted to take a trip down memory lane and look at all my old favourite AOT fan fictions from 2014 (and see whatās popular nowadays that I may have missed, since wow, a lot has changed since I was last present in this fandom and compared to whatās happening in the current episodes season one was tame).
Iāve noticed a huge divide between fanon and canon and I kinda wanted to ruminate on this a bit.
Erenās character in the show isnāt my favourite. Donāt get me wrong, Iām still fond of this brash idiot, but heāll never be my favourite. He falls into this shonen protagonist trope of being hot headed and ill tempered. He doesnāt take advice, heās not going to listen to plans or authority, he always thinks heās right and only follows his moral compass, and to tie it all up heās not even that strong. He canāt back up the threats that heās laying down and yet he always rushes into situations with fists flying and never thanks or appreciates the characters (Mikasa) that get him out of those tricky situations. The only way to get through to him is to physically beat him down and even then it may not work if he hadnāt already somewhat respected you (Mikasa again). This character type is seen so often in shonen and Iām really not a fan, I like the cool and calculating protagonist better. Someone who has the power behind their threats and doesnāt rush into situations. Again, I like Eren, but I think itās the other characters in the show that balance him out and the plot itself that makes me like Attack on Titan.
Compare this to fanon where his default character is happy ray of sunshine whoās a little bit naive. Itās a rather jarring comparison but I also donāt necessarily dislike it either. To me canon and fanon characteristics are almost completely seperate. If I had to always think a d compare fan fiction to canon I probably couldnāt read it. I read about happy fanon Eren and see canon angry Eren and to me they are two completely different characters - two completely different people even. If I had to read fan fiction about canon Eren I can 1000000% say that I just wouldnāt. I couldnāt. Iād be totally bored. As I said before, I like Eren but itās the people around him and the plot itself that makes him bearable. I can watch a show about him because it takes less time and emotional energy, but I couldnāt invest in reading a book about him (which is why I havenāt read the manga either).
This isnāt even exclusively towards Attack on Titan. Back in my Teen Wolf phase I noticed how different canon and fanon characters were. Small secret - I was knee deep in the Teen Wolf fandom before I realised that I hadnāt actually watched an episode of Teen Wolf. One of my mutualās reblogged TW artwork that was linked to a story and from that I never looked back. When I actually did get around to watching TW I can honestly say I was more than a wee bit disillusioned. Derek and Stiles are obviously not the main characters and I was prepared for that, but then they barely interacted, and when they did interact it was nothing like what I had read about - nothing like what their fanon characters or interactions were like. I can honestly say that I never made it past the first season - the show just wasnāt for me - but I was still thoroughly invested in the fandom for another year or two.
Something about fanon Sterek dynamics just did it for me, their characters and relationship was just so on point for what I wanted, and this is kind of when I came to accept that canon and fanon can be so different that it almost feels as if itās two pieces of completely different media. I mean, fanon has its own set of rules, itās own character tropes and story arcs that even completely different authors with completely different stories somewhat instinctively know to follow. I think thatās amazing, but itās also a double edged sword. See these first two examples were of shows that I A) never watched/finished before reading fan fiction, B) donāt necessarily love love the characters in canon. That means that fanon is more appealing because it takes something I donāt care too strongly for and changes it to something more appealing. But what about when fanon takes something I love and cherish and remoulds it?
I want to briefly take this time to talk about something Iāve dubbed āthe twink affectā. When you take a character thatās originally strong willed, self sufficient, and somewhat masculine and you pair the, up with someone EVEN MORE strong willed, self sufficient, and masculine - the āAlpha maleā of characters if you will. I find that fanon is incapable of seeing two strong men together in a relationship and will eventually slowly twinkify one of them. Make them smaller, softer, lonelier, less self sufficient and more reliant on others, they need to be taken care of, theyāre now a ball of sunshine thatās radiant and joyful, theyāre cotton candy that melts on your tongue. You put them next to the pairing you ship them with and instead of seeing two strong men you see a bear and a twink. Thatās definitely whatās happened to the two characters/pairings mentioned before and I honestly didnāt mind because I wasnāt protective of the source material, but when it does happen to a character I love itās the most frustrating thing in the world, and I canāt even complain because Iāve already reaped the benefits from other fandoms. (I am going to complain though, this is my blog and I can do what I want mum.)
Iām going to talk about Mo Dao Zu Shi. Beautiful story that I love in (almost) all its various adaptations, but Iāve noticed the ever slow changing of fanonās Wei Wuxian. For anyone reading this that hasnāt read MDZS (or if anyoneās reading this at all, I am expecting to just be shouting into the void at this point) Wei Wuxian dies - not a spoiler, it happens at the very beginning of the story - and comes back to life in the body of Mo Xuanyu. Mo Xuanyu is small malnourished and twinky - he even canonically wears makeup (or at least has it in his possession, Iām getting the various adaptations confused and I canāt remember if in canon Wei Wuxian woke up in Mo Xuanyuās body already wearing the makeup or if he just finds the tin of makeup in Mo Xuanyuās possessions). Wei Wuxianās character is also a bit of a tease, and now heās alive and unburdened by the past heās much freer now than he was in the past, couple that with the fact that heās pretending to be Mo Xuanyu (a character who is rumoured to be gay and also a bit insane) he goes all out in pretending to be a shameless flirt, and itās honestly hilarious, I love his character. So in a sense he has all the makings of a canon twink and Iām really not here to shame on those who portray him that way while heās in Mo Xuanyuās body.
My personal issue is with the same extreme twink portrayal while heās in his original body. In his original body Wei Wuxian is BUFF. Heās hunky, heās in the top five most eligible bachelors, heās *car honks* woof woof bark bark *whistles* puurrrr, heās one of the most powerful cultivators of his generation, heās a genius too. Heās hunky. He still has the cheeky shameless character, but when you compare him to the male lead Lan Wangji, theyāre about the same size and strength. My favourite type of fan fiction in MDZS is fix it/everybody lives nobody dies/no war/etc etc. Basically stories where Wei Wuxian keeps his original body. The fanon twink portrayal of him being so small and soft and weak while in canon heās one of the strongest and smartest urks me in ways I canāt explain. Itās not what I want, not what Iām looking for. I love him for who he is in canon and to see his character so distorted by fans of the original work is frustrating. I just want to read about Wei Wuxian as a jock with his equally buff and tall nerd boyfriend.
I want to pause here and say that I have nothing against authors that write him in a twinky way, I respect your work and your characters (and as I said before Iāve reaped the benefits of other fandoms twinky character portrayals numerous times), if I read a fic that Iām not happy with the characterisation I just close the tab and move on so absolutely no hate to anyone who enjoys this character type. Iām just ruminating on the fact that Iāve been seeing it happen more and more often lately to the point where Iāve kind of bounced the fandom and am sticking to other works like Scum Villain that havenāt yet twinkified too much (there will always be one or two stories in every fandom that twinkify and honestly? I respect that. Authors said twink rights ONLY, good for them).
Mo Dao Zu Shi isnāt the only fandom Iāve been in that Iāve negatively reacted to fanon. Another one would be Batman (I love Tim with all my heart and I love him getting treated nicely but damn I sometimes wish people would remember how freaking strong and amazing he is too), 2Ha is another Iāve started to see ātwinkifiedā (although I donāt mind seeing Chu Wanning being soft and taken care of, he is canonically called handsome and masculine and heās quite tall too), Iāve even seen the canonically ātopā character (and that seems so weird to write oml) be twinkified by fandom because they want to see him get bottomed for ~equal rights~ because apparently bottoming is seen as a āwomanās positionā to them and theyāre trying to be woke by switching the sexual positions up but failing to see how misogynistic and homophobic that take is (imma stop myself here because that a WHOLE ānother can or worms to be opened right there).
What Iām trying to say is fanon is a double edged sword and Iāve definitely enjoyed some and hated some. I think itās important to seperate the two. I do think itās annoying for fandoms to be flooded with mischaracterisation when you actually do like the original characters and I wish there was some way to seperate fandom into āactual canon fansā and āfans of fanonā, but I donāt have a solution and Iāve definitely contributed to the problem in the past so for that Iām sorry.
I donāt know how to end this long ass rant, I donāt know what the goal was in writing this, but taadaa ~ hereās my exceptionally long take on fanon.
#rant#I donāt know if I should tag the fandoms mentioned in case I wake a sleeping bear#but Iām going to do it anyway in case someone has the tags muted#mdzs#aot fanfiction#AOT#mo dao zu shi#fanon#ao3#attack on titan#ereri#wei wuxian

Not a shameless question but I know youāre a teen wolf fan too, so was wondering do you think they planned to go the sterek route eventually but received too much backlash for it or something? I always wondered if they felt that the fans were too crazed about it and thatās why they decided to back off, or that the actors didnāt want to do it?
oooooh boy, anon. i donāt get bitter on my blog very often but iām about to so buckle up lmfao
i kind of think itās the exact opposite actually. for the first 2 seasons and 3a everyone wanted sterek. the actors joked about it all the time, literally every article and interview brought it up, jeff enabled it. sterek was a major selling point of the show and the fans were baited with it for years
the backlash only came about during 3b and it most definitely came about as a result of jeff himself. look, gaslighting is a strong word and iām hesitant to use it but iāll never forget the shift in the fandom/media during that time. where fans were suddenly treated as weird or crazy for asking about sterek when theyād always asked about sterek (and had been encouraged to!!), that coupled with some comments made by TPTB that filtered down into the fandom created a massive divide that never existed before. bc iād been a tw blog for nearly two years at that point and never before that had i seen anyone argue about sterek vs stydia or whatever (people were very happy to multiship in the tw fandom)
iāll always believe jeff was just extremely bitter that sterek was an accident and something that never intended to happen and yet it became the thing the show was known for. (iāve seen people argue similar things for how shameless treated mickey/noel post-s5 and it makes Sense) bc the way it went down was so unnecessary???? like cutting all their scenes and preventing them from interacting for almost a whole season (and yet still giving them intensely emotional scenes when they did interact?)Ā
i genuinely believe if jeff or whoever had just turned around and been like āhey itās great you ship it but theyāll only ever be friends in canonā the majority of people wouldāve been fine. representation on shows back then was Different, people didnāt expect it to become canon. the problem lay in them simultaneously baiting fans with the ship while also acting as if fans were insane for picking up on subtext (like derekās dream scene w stiles which was based on some movie where the soldier comes back from war to his wife?????? i mean???????)
dylan and hoechlin never appeared to have a problem with it, they both commented on the fact it was a shame they werenāt getting scenes together anymore, they happily discussed it during interviews/cons (hoech especially), they literally planned out a sterekĀ āi missed youā scene for 3a that never happened. and if there was ever any doubt, i always go back to what hoechlin said at a con a few years back <3Ā
at the end of the day i trust hoech and dylan more than iāll ever trust jeff and i could tell you how sterek couldāve happened so easily in canon if he wasnāt such a fucking buzzkill but thatās a story for another post lol
(btw, anon, any and all frustration in this reply is ofc not directed towards you in any way!! i appreciate the question!! itās been a while since iāve gotten to talk about tw <3 jeff davis is just my villain origin story basically salkdjf)
#teen wolf wank#idk if that's still a tag lmao#man who knew jeff could still make me pressed in the year of 2020#ANYWAY#let me go post the cop au now skjdfhd#Anon#asks

30 Day Fandom Challenge
Here we go again for my fandom challenge. You still with me? @domsberto I'd also like to nominate @jimonsprettyface
This next fandom is one that I have been a part of from the very beginning and it holds a special place in my heart. Hold on tight and for those who haven't seen it, spoilers ahead.
Day 2- Teen Wolf
(TV Show not Movie)
1) Favorite Character: Stiles Stilinski
Reason: I have a thing for adorable dorks apparently. š
Ok so I adore Stiles the most because he is the backbone and heartbeat of the group. Sure he's a spazz and a nerd but he also always finds a way to get the group out of sticky situations because of his intelligent and knack for looking at things from every angle (he truly is his father's son....it helps his Father is the Sheriff alot of the time). He is loyal to a fault and though he has a hard time trusting most newcomers, once you are in he will literally follow you to the ends of the earth. He is a hopeless romantic, as shown with how he is with Lydia and even Malia. He loves deeply and thought he tends to be a fuck up at times he always finds a way to make things right. He keeps the others in line and helps everyone that needs his help. As the only human of the group he takes his job very seriously and is damn good at keeping the group together even when he personally feels like falling apart. I adore him to no end.
2) Most Relatable Character: Liam Dunbar
Reason: Liam is an adorable, scared and confused little rage monster. Unlike the others on the show who had a few seasons to get used to the world of the supernatural, Liam was still new to the world and was often left scratching his head wondering what the hell was going on. I can relate to that because even in real life I don't know what the hell is going on most of the time. He is also the most relatable because unlike the others on the show, he actually acts his age for the most part and wasn't forced to grow up as fast as the others. Honestly, for a young Beta wolf he can be the most human of them all at times. He likes to have fun, he likes to hang out with his girlfriend and play lacrosse. He marches to the beat of his own drum, which I do most of the time. Another thing I can relate to is having a short temper. While my temper is not nearly as bad as Liam's (who as Intermittent Explosive Disorder) I still get how hard it is to calm down once that temper is triggered.
3) Most Underrated Character: Isaac Lahey
Reason: Besides Derek, Isaac probably had the most growth of all the characters on the show before his exit from the show. He had to shoulder alot of pain and loss in his life starting with his mom leaving and his brother dying, then suffering from years of abuse at the hands of his father. After being turned by Derek, he felt empowered to help not only himself but others as well and did all that he could to help people in need. He even found it in him to forgive his father for abusing him for so long, which takes strength all on it's own. He went from being a scared and abused little boy to being a badass who did everything he could to help people he cared about and those who were unable to defend themselves. I see you Isaac, I see you and I appreciate you.
4) Most Overrated Character: Derek Hale
Reason: Ok before I start this, let me just says that I love Derek Hale ok? He is all kinds of sexy and has some good qualities but of all the people on the show he is also the most overrated. Ok hear me out here before you come at me. Throughout the series Derek is hyped up as this big bad Alpha dude. Yes, he turned a bunch of teens into wolves and helped them, and Scott, learn the ropes but when it came down to a fight most of the time he either made things worse or just didn't show up when he was needed the most (example when they were fighting the Nogitsune, Dread Doctors, Ghost Riders, Alphas). Most of the time it was Scott and his pack that ended up saving the day. Sure Derek helped gather intel but as far as fighting goes, he didn't really do much for such a "Big Bad Alpha" who threatened to rip people's throats out with his teeth. Hell he didn't even kill the bitch that murdered his ENTIRE family, nor did he kill the Darach...instead he slept with her. Wow Derek, just wow. He ran most of the time, went MIA alot of the time only to make a dramatic entrance and knock a few people around when Scott already had things under control. I love Derek but.....some big bad Alpha he was.
5) Least Favorite Character(s): Tied Kate, Gerard, and Victoria Argent
Reason: First of all, Kate....She got away with murdering an entire family (minus Derek, Laura, Peter and Cora) and then manages to cheat death by turning into a freaky ass werejaguar when Peter ripped her throat out. How?!?!?! No matter how much chaos she starts she still ends up getting away. How is she not dead yet? Jesus! She was a manipulative person and honestly one of the most toxic on the show besides her shady ass who I will talk about next.
Gerard was a piece of work. He brainwashed Allison into trying to kill her friends, he praised Kate for killing the entire Hale family, he tortured and killed innocent supernaturals simply for existing and used Jackson in his kanima form to carry out his shady agenda. He was also a hypocrite. He hates supernaturals yet relied on Scott to help take away his pain when he was sick and dying only to turn around and train a new generation of Anti-Supernatural hunters to do his bidding. He was a piece of shit.
Victoria Argent was the Matriarch of the Argent family and even when her daughter (Allison) and husband (Chris) wanted to actually help the innocent supernaturals she did everything in her power to make sure they felt like shit for wanting to help. She freaking tortured and tried to kill Scott for no other reason than he was a werewolf that was screwing her daughter and then made herself out to be a victim when Derek came to save Scott and he bit her a few times after she attacked him. She refused to turn and killed herself instead of facing the consequences her actions lead to (her turning into the very thing she hated, a werewolf).
6) Favorite Canon Pairing: Stydia (Stiles Stilinski and Lydia Martin)
Reason: From the beginning when you first see Stiles and Lydia interact on screen you start to root for the spastic nerd to win the heart of the most popular girl in school. Stiles always saw the real Lydia that she hid behind her popular facade. He saw how smart she was, how much she actually cared for people despite pretending like she didn't. He had been in love with her since the 3rd grade and even when they dated other people, that love never died. The closer they got as friends the more you wanted them to just end up together. Several seasons later and we finally hear them confess their love for each other and finally FINALLY get together. Praise be to all things Holy! Stiles and Lydia manage to balance each other out and anchor each other. When Stiles has panic attacks, Lydia is there to help calm him down. When Lydia gets overwhelmed by her Banshee powers, Stiles is there to help ground her. Stiles saved Lydia more times than I can count but she saved him too on more than one occasion. Stiles and Lydia have a love that is beautiful and pure. I see them lasting forever and they should even now that the show has been over for a while now. They are beautiful and they are my OTP. I could go on forever but I will just leave it here.
7) Favorite Non-Canon Ship: Scisaac (Scott McCall and Isaac Lahey)
[Close Call Honorable Mention: Sterek (Stiles Stilinski & Derek Hale)]
Reason: Ok first of all this was a close race between my boys Scisaac and my boys Sterek but when I look back at both pairings, I love the purity of Scott and Isaac versus the almost toxic pairing that is Sterek. (I adore Sterek but come on! Looking back now they were hella toxic!) Now for Scott and Isaac they had their moments. They lived together and Scott always managed to find a way to help bring Isaac back to reality when he had moments where he would lapse into PTSD style symptoms and nightmares. They always had each other's backs and they always gave each other looks that went beyond that of just friendship. Hell Isaac even agreed with hearts in his eyes that Scott was the "hot girl". I believe that if these two had of both cut Allison lose and crossed the boundary of friendship into a romantic relationship they would have been just as strong as Stydia. A pure and passionate kind of love born out of genuine care for one another.
8) Least Favorite Pairing: Stalia (Stiles Stilinski and Malia Tate)
Reason: First of all their first hook up was in a freaking insane asylum so that right there is not a good start for any lasting relationship. Throughout their relationship, Malia took Stiles for granted and then had the nerve to get jealous when he paid more attention to Lydia (who he had been in love with forever at that point). Malia had the mindset of a child and was immature most of the time. Don't get me wrong, Stiles could be immature at time too but she brought out the worst in him. I don't dislike Malia. I actually like her as a character but not as Stiles's girlfriend. Plus this biggest reason I dislike this ship? It took longer for Stydia to finally happen. Let's not forget how she practically walked all over him.
9) Favorite Part/Moment: Lydia tells Stiles she loves him too.
Reason: Stiles had been taken by the Ghost Riders and everyone forgot who he was but before he was taken he told Lydia "Remember I love you." But she never got the chance to say it back before he and her memories of him were ripped away. When he finally came back there was a touching scene where Lydia said "I never got to say it back." And the two of them shared their first real kiss (not counting the kiss she gave him to stop a panic attack in a previous season). This was one of those moments that was several years long overdue and for us Stydia fans, we rejoiced when they finally got their shit together and actually became a couple. Praise!
10) Least Favorite Part/Moment: Allison is killed by the Oni
Reason: Allison Argent was a character you could sometimes love and hate at the same time. When they battled the Nogitsune and she sacrificed herself to the Oni to save Isasc, I sobbed like a baby. It was a way for the writers to write off the actress's character but one of the most heartbreaking scenes in the entire series. It is my least favorite because Allison died. It was a beautiful farewell as she died in the arms of her first love (Scott) but I can't even think about it without sobbing.
Thank you for sticking with me. Until tomorrow! ā¤
