Look at that, an Introduction Post!
Good morning! And in case youâre staying up late like I am, good afternoon, good evening, and good night.
I am ââââââââ, I draw so much I have a wrist brace now.
As anyone could tell from one quick look at my blog, I love Spooky Month. It being my main fandom on here was not the plan, but Iâd be surprised to see something change that now. However, any piece of media, be it shows, movies, games, books, or anything else, that I even so much as mention, PLEASE FEEL FREE TO ASK ME ABOUT IT. If I bring it up at all that indicates that I am willing to talk about it, bordering on desperate to, please Iâve been alone for so long-
Old Things
Anything I have ever done, anything I have ever drawn, any idea I have ever had is totally up for grabs as long as Iâm credited. You can go into my old archives, please go into my archives, please reblog my age old posts, PLEASE build on my ancient ideas. I give my thoughts specifically to be built upon, to spark new concepts, to one day be turned into drawings, and if you can do any of that, DO IT. Itâs not like once itâs old itâs gone, thatâs what an archive is for. Itâs still there, use it.
Also,
Iâm gonna say that you can use my stuff for anything. Again, as long as Iâm credited; but even if Iâm not, whatâs mostly important to me is that something I made is out there being enjoyed by someone. Also, please put my posts on Pinterest if you want because I didnât even know it was its own social media until like a few months ago and I sure as hell wonât be doing it myself.
Is There An Age Rating?
(Sad lil edit:)
Idk man. Iâm in a weird spot where I would rather say Sex than the f-word. I never say or reblog suggestive stuff, but I LOVE blood and seeing adorable things face unfathomable traumas. I barely even draw characters kissing but Iâll draw them being ripped open from the inside out (Hehe Inside Out reference)
Donât be afraid to show me things, but I will say that I donât like gross stuff. I would also rather watch someone vomit their guts out than like. Throwing up actual vomit
DNI
As for a DNI list, I donât really have one. If you do identify with anything on a standard list (proshippers, looking at you mostly), letâs just agree to exist around each other as Minecraft wolves, ok? As long as neither of us attack each other for no reason, everything should be fine. This is a blog run by a child and is mostly about children and childrenâs media, keep that in mind. Honestly even if you are problematic, I likely wonât care unless you do something bad to me personally.
Donât betray me or youâll be integrated into all my stories through allegory characters and when you die Iâll search your grave for cool stuff.
I try to remain as neutral as I can on most touchy subjects and am generally pretty sympathetic, which may or may not be my downfall one day, but for now you can rely on me to just be your funny little art poster and AU flesher-outer.
Asks Nâ Stuff
I look at every single notification/ask I get and I love receiving them. If you send an ask and I donât answer it, chances are:
I just canât think of a response (may be answered when I do, could be insanely old by then but eh)
It sprouted an idea in my mind that made me go âOoo, I should draw that!â and then I never did
I am specifically keeping it in my inbox for quick access
I did have a response and I just. Forgot. I think about it constantly but only when I canât actually post anything
I may have legitimately just missed it. Trust that Iâll eventually look in my inbox, go âOh BRUH I NEVER SAW THAT ONE,â and then one of the above will occur
Sometimes I also just look at âem and smile cause theyâre nice
Now Me, Personally,
One may call me Ink. When I was a baby, I decided I never wanted to grow up. Nothing has affected me (for better and worse) more than that. I have spent about [age]-3= years zoned out and thinking of stories to tell. Iâve been very existential my whole life, like more than is normal for the average 8 year old. I enjoy talking to people, but often donât do it unless approached first, and I donât click with everyone. I have a hard time knowing how to talk in ways other than in jokes, but Iâll try. I also have the wildest thought process, so loads of things I say/think are contradictory, but it makes sense in my head trust.
Lowkey waiting to dox myself; I will tell my life story at the drop of a hat, just ask.
So Uh, Yeah
Interested in characters, interested in people, interested in the future, and interested in the past. Too much is on my mind at any given time. You need fandom stuff? I got it. Something drawn? I got it. Someone to talk to? Sure, Iâll try. But for now, Iâm going to bed man.

So I just wanted to ask and say some things.
First of all:
Ur Ink u did for Inktober was really pretty. Look forward to any more Inktober pictures u can do. Only if u can though.
2nd of all: That Halloween Special AU art of Paps and Sans was so cute! Small baby-ish (demon; I think) Paps and teethwear (demon; I think) and/or braces Sans are so cute. I like their aesthetic too.
3rd of all: I was wondering how u been doing on any of ur projects
(like, Dead Ringer, which, I am very excited for the next episode of, and to see some of Sans, Paps, and Frisk's story of Dead Ringer. Will hopefully say something about Ep3 like I have done about the other previous episodes in some form. Or also like Bonnytale; which I read ur update(s) about on it's blog. And I am also very excited about. Or Inkuabtor. Ok, I probably spelled that wrong. Which, I am curious about. And the TikToks of it have been fun. I do hope u share it's story besides TikTok though. I will use TikTok sometimes. Like to see stuff and/or creators' stuff I like; like you. But I do admit; I don't use TikTok that much).
I know u have been jumping around them (and/or maybe even others), and/or probably are just busy and stuff. And I can wait for stuff. I know things can take awhile, and people have lives.
I am just curious.
4th of all: It looks like Hazbin Hotel is coming out in January, and if u are still doing Underhell, that means u will be getting more for that AU/series soon. Which is super cool. I love that AU, and the art and character stuff and stuff have done with it so far.
Also, since Hazbin Hotel is premiering soon, Cartoon Universe did a cool video called: "EVERYTHING You Need To Know Before Hazbin Hotel's Premiere!" , that has some cool info about Hazbin Hotel; that could be useful for ur AU/Underhell
Will say more about Underhell in another Ask, I feel like I have too much to say about it to have it in this ask, and I feel like it's better as it's own other Ask. Plus, this Ask is getting there in length. I don't know when I will send in that other Ask for Underhell though. Also, should I send that Underhell Ask on the Underhell Blog, or this blog?
Last of All: I hope u are doing well! And happy early Halloween!!
Thank you for the ask <3 ur presence means a lot to me! now then *cracks knuckles* letâs get into this
1. I have been doing some inktober works however Iâm currently in a headspace where im overally critical with my work so i havenât been posting them (hereâs one i did but i redid it i will post the new one later today)
2. i love my little vamp au even tho i have not build on it and arenât planning to its still fun to me and im glad u enjoyed it ^-^
3.deadringer process is still slow as iâm focused on college but i have been getting a lot of progress done in which i honestly didnât think i would, turns out hang drawing/animating as a stress reliever helps me grandly lmao. Also iâm proud of the improvements from the first episode to this one.
As for inkubator I do plan on posting it on Tumblr. So it will only be available on Tumblr and Tiktok! I might have to make another blog for it ooo

4. I have been doing redesigns and story updates on underhell but i havenât been able to work on it as much as im hyperfixiated on my purple babies (deadringer) and inkubator :âD I will take a look at that though!
5. Any blog is fine! ^-^ im sorry for the slow updates on underhell i promise ill get there đ
happy early halloween! and thank you for the ask! your care really means a lot to me and iâm glad someone is so interested in my works <3

I talk on here a lot hopefully Iâm not weirding you out.
Iâve also rewrote parts of 2012 Tmnt. And I have questions!
So hold up lemme get my list.
First of!
Leo? Trans fem? If so, during what arc would she come out? I have my own ideas but I wanna know yours!
Ships?? (Bats eye lashes)
Ok ok next
Any new designs? Cause I have some for the krang and the big krang robot
Mmm what else⊠OOo!
Redesigns?
Any other plot points and stuff your adding on too?
I really really like hearing ideas about rewriting parts of 2012 .
Anyway hopefully Iâm not weird or annoying! Please tell me if I should calm down on the asking (trust me I would not be offended)
-đȘČ
FUCK !! YESSSS I LOVE BEIN ASKED QUESTIONS DW IT HELPS ME ACTUALLY BRAINSTORM<3<3
yesss transfem leo :3 idk when she comes out but she doesnt rlly get time to think abt her gender until th farmhouse arc but that gets interrupted when they go back to reverse th invasion (i most recently watched th ep where bebop nd rocksteady got mutated so i only have like. a vague idea of what happens next lol) but i think maybe? it would be before the space arc?? god i need 2 keep watchinđ YES. SHIPS. GOD OK SO. im a multishipper if its not obvious but fr this particular au/rewrite, im eventually gonna have lesbian aprilnardo bc idk they have a rlly good dynamic i think. side not raph nd april are absolutely besties they love talkin shit. there will also be timatello bc im giving tim an actual arc whatttttđ€Żđ€Żđ€Żđ€Ż anyway yea LOL timatello<3 altho itll just be pining nd they never get 2gether sadly :( srry th angst won nd someone maybe got a little bit shotđ ill try to throw some jonatello crumbs in aswell maybe, idk torn between them nd rasey fr why does casey have so much gameđ€š oh my god yes i want to ideally redesign all the characters tho idk if ill get around 2 EVERYONE but man im a fruit ofc im changin up these designs. i gave april braces nd freckles bc i think it suits her :3 i also wanna make th kraang in general more like. horrifying? probably not the early series kraang, but w aprils kraang dna in particulat i wanna delve deeper into horror teehee. also wanna make karai more well. shes a teenager bruh i think she shuld be allowed to have her emo era lol. im tryna wait until i get thru like majority of th show to mess w th plot points but some ideas i have involve showing more of the farmhouse arc, and considering a certain. lost limbđ¶(srry leo lol) itll take a bit longer fr them to get back 2 nyc. also jus gonna try nd fix th weird way 2012 did romance subplots?? why does leo hav a crush on her sisterđ€ą yea no instead she meets karai in civilian clothes nd they bond nd karai becomes like an older sister to her but then she has to betray leo fr shredder :( not super developed obvs but i think i jus wanted karai to wear trap pants and smoke weed lol. april also shuts down donnie rlly early bc shes a lesbian so shes like. bruh. also my recent art post idk what actually happens in mutant apocalypse but i was thinkin abt how interestin it wuld be if leo was captured by the kraang and used as an experiment bc of her unique mutations :3
#silver spills#asks#tmnt 2012 rewrite#i need 2 name it so i can keep better track grahhh#dw i love th excuse 2 infodump teehee

JuAli Comic Idea [6-23-2023]
Intro
I showed this JuAli idea to my friends before, Iâm glad they liked it hehe. I originally wrote this back in November!
I revamped a JuAli idea I had. Judar and Alibaba kiss with banter
*Note: Itâs kinda sexually suggestive and implicitly R-15 (PG-13) rated
I used some lines from Vol. 27 - Ch. 266, and the Vol. 28 - Ch. 278 omake with Judar and haniwa (clay doll) Alibaba. The chapters where he was a sausage shaped haniwa (OoO)
Other
I usually write my ideas down in script dialogue format as potential comic ideas for the future. Also cuz I figured that bolding the names would make things easier to read
I'm busy so Idk when I'll sketch this all out and redraw it properly, but this one tweet generated some ideas in my head that I showed to Cinna and Raisu. Back in November, I roughly wrote the gist of it down, but I felt like adding to it cuz itâs one of my personal faves. It's just kissing but it's kinda suggestive/implicit so y'know.
A little comic idea I had in my head. I showed it to my friends and they really enjoyed it, I'm glad! It's one of my faves too tbh. I first wrote this in November, but I decided to make edits to it. I like writing banter!!!
I actually did some old rough doodles before that was kinda based off this idea! And I totally need to redraw these, but I really like how I drew Judar's expressions. I like practicing sketching expressions hehe
Also someone give Judar a haniwa Alibaba plushie -v-
You can read under the cut if you wanna check out the rest hehe. I wanna post more of my writing ideas here
Some rambles
*Note: Sometimes I just write the dialogue only because I have a good visual imagination, so the dialogue itself is already a good outline to use for potential comic ideas in the future, but I thought itâd be fun to add to it. I write dialogue scripts a lot (whenever the inspiration hits and Iâm not doing art).
Iâm a visual person, so I mainly do art (and comic idea dialogue scripts as outlines for potential art ideas). A lot of times, when I get ideas, I visualize scenes in my head, so my ideas are written in script dialogue format.Â
I like writing ideas down so that I don't forget and so that I can still imagine and draw them in the future. I have a good visual imagination, so even if I just write the dialogue, I can imagine what the scene conveys pretty easily.Â
I was wondering if I should just have short descriptions on a line on its own, just like a play/movie script would, but itâs actually easier for me to read when the name is bolded beside it, so then I know which actions/descriptions are assigned to which character, yâknow.
I tend to have certain quirks when writing dialogue scripts
I put descriptions in brackets () beside the name. I decided to make them italics though to differentiate them more, cuz I also use brackets () for character thoughts.Â
Itâs not in this one, but Iâll put a (...) on a line on its own to mark line breaks for scene transitions (or to mark that the scene is still a WIP and I need to add to it)
Iâll put any notes with (*) asterisks.Â
I bold names so itâs easier to read
Whenever I get hit with sudden blorbo thoughts or inspiration to write ideas, I write them in Notepad or Google Docs, but I also do a lot of reactions and discussions with mutuals/friends. Someone posts something they want to talk about in the chat (ie. animanga/game reactions, AU and art ideas, etc.) and others join in and talk about it if they have time.
A lot of times, I tend to think back on my discussions with friends a lot, because I think they're inspiring and their thoughts help give a lot of insight.
Everyone has so much insightful things to say, so I wanna quote my discussions with my friends here! So some rambles will be in discussion/chat format because I donât feel like reformatting the post
Discussion I had with friendsÂ
This idea was actually based off this LMAO
This silly tweet was my prompt starter
I showed it to Cinna and Raisu hehe. And Iâm glad Lumen and Jaqui also liked it too <3 This was our discussion
Me: I wanna say this is JuAli but none of them would talk like that. They would so do this though
Friend: No this is literally Judar he just words it differently lmao
Me: YEAH HE'D JUST WORD IT DIFFERENTLY LMAOOO
Friend: YEA
Me: JuAli's Love-Hate relationship (at first) is soooo interesting to me <33 They're so sen-core they appeal perfectly to my tastes
Me: Oh that tweet makes me want to write dialogue now. Yeah I can draft some JuAli stuff then
Friend: Omg
Friend 2: đ THIS MEME IS ALWAYS FUNNY
Me: Thinking about this again so I wrote a thing kinda based off it JuAli but it's kinda suggestive/implicit though
I wrote some ideas based off this. It's literally just them kissing but it's kinda suggestive/sexually implicit so just putting that out there
Friend: VALID LMAO THIS IS PERFECT Completely in-character for Judar
Me: THE WAY I'M IMAGINING IT IS SO. SPICY. NOW KISS!!!
Friend: VALID VALID!!
Friend 3: OMFGGGBVEHEVFBGBH
Me:Â I actually originally wrote Judar's last line as "Show me the kind of spark that charmed Hakuryuu so much". Because Judar makes an observation in Ch. 266 that Hakuryuu is charmed by Alibaba in the fan-TL :)Â
But I don't tend to reference other ships in my ship stuff since I usually focus on ships solo. Like in my AU stuff, I tend to focus on just the ship/characters itself.
Like I would rather deal with my multiships in their own separate AUs, since itâs easier for me to work with. Most of the time I just prefer to have my AUs focus on just the ship itself (and occasionally other charas.)Â
I do love AliHaku though. But I liked that line and it was good, so I still tried to include it though. NGNGNNG. Without mentioning any names, cuz letâs keep this JuAli focused
Friend: OOOH I SEE.... Valid as heck It's a good one
Me: I posted this on main, but I might as well post it again here ^^ For JuAli, I feel like at first, Judar hates Alibaba with so much love. And Judar would just constantly be like "I really don't get this guy at all" and "I don't understand what he's thinking at all!"
I feel like in the early stages of them catching feelies, theyâd both be really awkward around each other and constantly headbutt each otherâŠÂ Â
Judar is verbally harsh (violently tsun) and demands around verbally a LOT, like a needy cat that wants attention and affection. The tsundere catboy bad boy... And I feel like at first, theyâd both be really awkward around each other and fluster each other. I think they'd always be pretty competitive with each other (in a playful, fun way) but they'd warm up to each other over time.
I'm busy so Idk when I'll sketch this all out but it was based off this idea I had in my head.
Like with JuAli, I think their games are mostly light-hearted and fun, and enticing and passionate.
Like it emphasizes playful competitiveness, a heavy focus on drawing things out, wanting to enjoy themselves for as long as they can and do their best to make every intimate occasion they have together worth the wait. Everything about their intimacy is energetic and passionate, (just like them!)
Though it's also fun to imagine a bit more rough aggressiveness, rough kisses and biting.Â
When I imagine the early stages of their relationship/pining I think they'll butt heads more often and it'll be more aggressive, then it'll progress to something very loving and more on the same wave length.
Daily/Hourly accounts
Before the Twitter changes, folks would have daily/hourly accounts dedicated their fave medias, books, poems, etc. Theyâd put their fave quotes in (or animanga/game screencaps of their faves), have them be posted on intervals. People did it just cuz they wanna assign quotes to their fave charas/ships or have accounts dedicated to them
But then Muskratâs stankass changes happened... I was thinking it wouldâve been cute to have a JuAli daily account post screencaps of either of them from the manga tbh

Helia and Tecna friendship headcanons? -lambofzenith
AHHHHHHHHHH okay so
helia is really bad at technology right? pretty much anything that isn't covered in red fountain lessons, he's a complete no-go at. tecna takes it upon herself to try and help him understand basic technology a bit more and it goes so wrong. helia is literally the mom that squints their eyes and holds their phone away from their face while using One pointer finger to type everything. tecna hates it so much.
helia naturally doesn't understand a single thing that comes out of her mouth when she's talking technology but he still supports her nonetheless
helia is surprisingly rational most of the time! he's a firm Push All My Emotions Down And Then One Day I'll Die kind of person so even during really stressful missions, he's good at keeping a level head about things. tecna really appreciates this and it's not rare to see her, helia, and timmy discussing mission-related strategies During The Middle Of A Fight
tecna has a tendency to talk while she works (only noticeable around people she's comfortable with though) but she gets a little self-conscious about it. she knows it's not Bad or anything, but it doesn't seem Right either so she tries to keep quiet most of the time. helia on the other hand is so used to working while it's noisy that he's totally chill with it. they've gotten used to just vibing in the same room, working on their own things, and not actually talking to each other during it. they're comfortable around each other :) helia doesn't mind when she rambles out loud and tecna doesn't mind him pacing around the room every five minutes. symbiotic relationship.
tecna doesn't like talking about what she went through in the omega dimension, even with timmy. however, she does occasionally draw things out when she really needs to vent and can't think of any other way how. she's always been good at sketching due to her background in designing gadgets so this wasn't a weird transition for her. helia told her about this anonymous place for artists to submit their art with absolutely no names attached and after checking to make sure it was legit and she was completely safe, she started to submit one or two a year. she doesn't like to do it often but it does help to sort of "get it out" without actually talking about it.
while helia is notoriously Bad at video games, he does actually like the more "physical reality" ones (think that virtual reality tecmy scene!) mainly because it feels close enough to real life that he doesn't need to rely on just technology to do it. tecna and helia often have very competitive gaming matches but specifically within those kinds of games otherwise, he's really bad at it and she gets annoyed that he can't remember any of the buttons.
speaking of competitions, helia has an inner bet going on of How Much Can I Pretend To Not Know Jackshit About A Specific Technological Topic Before Tecna Notices. what he doesn't know, is that tecna knows he does this and has her own inner bet of How Long Can I Explain This Specific Topic Before Helia Gets Bored And Moves On. so far, the score is mostly even, with helia only winning because timmy isn't aware of this mental battle and will often jump in to explain things too. helia is very smug about this and tecna can't say anything to timmy otherwise she loses the fight that no one actually set firm rules on.
timmy is just really happy that his two best friends are also friends and sometimes he tries to invite helia and flora on their dates. tecna is okay with this only because she thinks it's funny. florelia were also okay with it but started to not be because they realized that their version of a date and tecmy's version of a date was extremely different. they've started to come up with increasingly ridiculous excuses for why they can't go and so far timmy is the only one that hasn't noticed. poor timmy, he genuinely thinks flora's best friend cactus is sick and needs care đ
when timmy isn't available, helia will call tecna for any technology related issues he's having. on one hand, she likes that he trusts her and can rely on her, on the other hand, she's told him ten separate times not to leave his computer running all the damn time. (tecna: please turn the computer off when you're not using it. this will immensely help solve all of the problems you've been having. helia: okay so i'm gonna leave it on all the time?). he's not trying to be difficult though. he just forgets everything and assumes it should work regardless (he a little stupit).
roxy gets so much gender envy from both of them and it confuses her all the time. they have no idea what a gender envy is though and they're mostly just wondering how they stop giving it to roxy since it seems like it agitates her??? help please???? researching the matter doesn't help and it ends up becoming a meme on winx stan twt because tecna made a very official and serious post asking about the severity of "gender envy" and needing to know how contagious it is. now whenever either of them posts, earth teens just comment gender envy at them. helia still doesn't know what it means.
they don't watch movies/tv together but they will binge-watch the same shows and then talk about them later on. tecna's formatting is still very formal and functional meanwhile helia bounces off multiple points and forgets to make a conclusion. he stresses her out so much.
helia notices when tecna has stayed up too long for too many nights and will occasionally send her a "please sleep" message when he knows timmy is already asleep and can't do it. she doesn't always listen but sometimes she will, but not before sending the same message back because why the fuck is he up at this hour huh dumbass?????
tecna has a pet bird and helia has multiple cats and they absolutely cannot be in the same room together. her bird is constantly trying to fight his cats and while they're usually well behaved, he's genuinely scared they're gonna try to eat it (tecna: stop calling my bird an "it"; helia: stop putting your bird near my cats ïżœïżœ)
they actually don't like hanging out when one of them is upset. they both have a hard time talking about their emotions (for different reasons obviously) and they always end up feeling like they have to say something when they're together. they just really prefer hanging when they're both in a good mood or at least calm. whenever one of them gets upset, they stop hanging out together until that person feels better.
connected to the last point, you'd think that would mean they don't know a lot about each other, but they surprisingly do! they're both relatively observant people (tecna gets better every year) and they're actually really good at figuring out why the other is upset and what would help. they just don't talk about it.
although, on a similar note, the one time they did have an emotional talk, it was about timmy. tecna was feeling upset again and worrying over whether or not she's "too logical/not emotional enough" and it was the one time where she actually allowed herself to hang out with him while being upset. they had a genuine heart to heart about things and especially about how she's way too hard on herself. they thought it would be awkward since they actively avoided this kind of thing but it wasn't! it went very naturally and helia even teared up a bit. he's very proud of her and the effort she makes every day and since that talk has been much more vocal about it.
when they went to earth in s4, they both spent way too much time learning about Earth Things; tecna about earth media (canon), and helia about animals since that's what flora was talking about. he started calling tecna "chip" after that because chipmunks reminded him of her. she disagrees with this assessment and he refuses to admit he mixed up chipmunks and squirrels. he still calls her chip to this day, and fortunately, it's grown on her. unfortunately, he calls timmy "chip" too, and now it's a hassle to figure out who he's talking to.
helia is surprisingly interested in zenith technology despite not understanding it all! he enjoys walking through the streets of zenith with tecna while she proudly points things out so he can go "ooo aaa" at everything. sometimes she tries to explain how things work and his mind starts playing elevator music automatically. tecna has gotten really good at knowing when helia is just. brain empty no thoughts because she recognizes the Empty look in his eyes. she enjoys catching it live and trying to figure out why he's just. not thinking (usually it's because he either doesn't understand something or got bored) (this happens often when sky starts talking) (sorry sky)
tecna is one of the winx (besides flora of course) that helia trusts the most. not in an emotional or friend way, but in a physical, we're on a mission way. she has good control of her magic and knows how to use it. she's good at thinking of strategies and applying them properly to the situation. and after the omega dimension, he had a newfound respect for her previously unknown to him survival skills. if he were even in severe danger, she would be the first winx he'd call (depending on the situation, she is occasionally ahead of flora).
helia is really bad at sharing details. he tends to go straight to the conclusion but doesn't share how he got there (adhd king đ) and tecna is the best person to call in when this happens. her logical questioning makes it seem so easy because she has the patience and knowledge to connect the dots and ask the right questions. when anyone else tries its more like (helia: i'm sitting in a pool of blood; person: uhm do you know where it's coming from?; helia: probably the stab wound; someone: did you get stabbed??; helia: oh yeah definitely.)
#lamb.. i love them so much...#the comedy potential with these two are just off the roof#winx club#winx tecna#winx helia#answered#lambofzenith#mine.headcanons#ugh ik i mentioned it on the trivelia post but this made me think of the backstory i made up for helia#because tecna plays a big part in it later on in the story#i have an entire rewrite that i refuse to ever actually write ajhgljadlg#but tecna plays a big part in helia's Main Arc in the story... and its so self indulgent i just really love these two#posting now.. when no one is awake.. ajkdhljaghdlj

Reviewing Adventure Time graphic novel: âThunder Roadâ
by Jeremy Sorese (Steven Universe comic writer) and Zachary Sterling (Adventure Time main comic artist)
Okay, so after purchasing and reading it today, I can safely say the DESCRIPTION of this graphic novel is ENTIRELY INCORRECT:Â
Marceline starts feeling restless and comes across a motorcycle gang of storm clouds. Taking this as a chance to try something new, Marceline sets off on the open road with her new friends but things take a turn when she realizes that the storm clouds might be taking things a bit too far when it comes to their pranks. Marceline has to make a choice, to join in and create a natural disaster bigger than Ooo has ever seen or to go back to her boring quiet life--luckily, the answer comes from an unexpected source who just happened to be trailing the clouds...for research, of course.
No, nonono. This doesnât even remotely resemble what happens.Â
Actually, there is still a motorcycle gang, but this isnât really a book about Marceline - itâs mostly about a drama with Bubblegum, and how she ends up taking her frustration out on Marceline. Itâs about some difficulties they have communicating with each other, too.Â

The Candy Kingdom is being flooded by non-stop rain. Jake is acting as a giant canopy to try and protect the castle, but itâs not working, and everything is falling apart - candy people are getting seriously injured, and it seems this has been going on for weeks. Everybody is exhausted, and things are looking dire. This was an eerily familiar situation for me, living in the RCT, which got demolished by flooding last February before the Corona crisis, and which is still recovering. Theyâre all working together to solve this crisis, and PB is glad to see Marceline caring about other people. Marceline flies up in the sky and discovers a motorcycle gang is making the clouds rain down.Â
PB is entirely at her wits end, she yells at the motorcycle gang, gets bullied by them, and decides to challenge them to a race. If she wins, they leave. If they win, then they will drive all over the Candy Kingdom and destroy it. Bubblegum gets incredibly angry at herself for making such a reckless bet, when sheâll have to race in the goddamn sky, and she insists this problem is her fault, so she needs to solve it by herself.
Marceline gets fed up that PB wants to solve it by herself and is pushing her away, so as a ploy of reverse psychology she says, âFine, I WONâT helpâ, and flies away to investigate the gang further.

Bubblegum thinks Marcie has fucked off and ditched them. Marceline hasn't actually given up on her - she tries to perform some secret reconnaissance, befriending the gang and sabotaging their bikes. Marceline returns bits of cloud to the kingdom as well, to a still-bitter PB who wonât thank her. However, things turn for the worse when the biker gang discover the bikes were damaged, and they confront PB about the sabotage, with Marceline's life possibly on the line.

Thankfully, the gang let Marceline go. Bubblegum proper goes off on Marceline for not trusting her to be able to do things by herself, while Marceline says that she should have just accepted help in the first place. They have a falling out. Marceline is upset that PB keeps taking out her anger on her, and lashes out a bit, tells PB this is her fault so sheâs on her own.Â

Shenanigans ensue. After a tense and highly dangerous bike race, Bubblegum manages to scrape a victory - without Marcelineâs help - due to electromagnetic shenanigans with her cloud bikeâs fuel tank.
I donât want to post images of the race, because it has some awesome moments that I want you to see for yourself in the novel.Â
However, she realises she had accidentally cheated, and apologises to Marceline for taking everything out on her earlier - she says that it shouldnât be that way, that she shouldnât just get mad at Marceline whenever sheâs stressed. Â

She tells Marcie that she doesn't want to treat her like shit every time she has a bad day.
They have a motorbike race. PB forgets Marceline can fly, and drives off a cliff to save her. Marceline ends up saving PB. Lots of cute moments.Â
It turns out, also, that PB has become a bit of a legend in the sky biker community.Â

[EDIT: I just realised the jackets say âWe Talked It Outâ! Theyâre proud that they were able to have a conversation about their problems! Awwwww]
So, this comic seems to take place during season 6. Most likely between The Cooler and Hot Diggety Doom - when PB is still kind of hyper-aggro and overworked, but is trying to cool down, and when Marceline hasnât learnt how to communicate properly with her.  At the same time, the stakes are high enough that it does make sense for the characters to behave in this way at ANY time after Sky Witch, provided itâs not after the series finale.  Finn, notably, still has his right arm. He doesnât pick up a sword. If he did, I might have been able to directly tell where this fit in the showâs continuity. Â
Anyway, itâs outstanding. Easily the best of the Adventure Time graphic novels Iâve read. What I loved is how tense the situation really felt, how the emotions the characters were feeling were extensions of what they would feel if this happened in the show. It didnât feel out of character for PB to be breaking down and acting like a tool, or for Marceline to be secretive and indirect, and then lash out a bit when PB hurts her. It was an awesome character study on their relationship and how it could have its toxic moments.  The situation seemed genuinely dire. The biker gang were genuinely hateable and intimidating. The threat they made to the characters felt real, which is rare for this show. And the emotional moments hit me hard. It works super well after watching Obsidian, wherein you saw PB in the past take her anger out on Marcie and how that contributed to their breakup.Â
It also has Marcie and PB racing around on motorbikes, which is funny because that's what they did in Obsidian.
You can tell that Jeremy Sorese did work on SU comic stuff, because he does a good job at capturing those brief emotions, those epic moments, that SU did so well. This comic is also more dramatic than the usual AT flare.Â
The art is okay. It is in graphic novel format, and itâs meant to look a lot like the show. It is nice and colourful. It is clean, and sells emotions perfectly fine. However, Zachary Sterling has historically had issues drawing the arms of the characters - he makes them look far too much like stiff bendy tubes, when they are more free-form and can bend at full right-angles in the show. I feel like he was trying to stay too on-model, and didnât take his art to its full potential. Some panels are also recycled and slightly edited.Â
8/10 - A good read for fans of PB and Marcy, a plot with convincing tension from the first page, with an interesting character study on how PBâs stress can cause her to hurt the people closest to her and she needs to manage that. However, the description on the back of the book is entirely incorrect for no reason. Well worth the ÂŁ11 I spent to get a paperback copy sent today.Â
You can buy a copy on Amazon for same day delivery. You used to be able to buy a copy on Comixology, but for some reason, itâs been removed.Â

Masterpost
It's been an incredibly trying month for me and I'm unsure about a lot of things in my personal life now, but this isn't one of them. I'm so happy to finally be getting back to my feet so I can make more of the Starco content I want the world to see. Hope you enjoy, and thanks for your patience. (Also, fair warning, thereâs one ever so slightly steamy Starco scene here)
âHave you ever wondered why heart thingies are hearts?â Marco stopped chewing on a bite of his burrito as he turned his full attention to Star. It wasnât the most confusing thing sheâd ever said, but it was up there. âLike, why does this symbol mean hearts and love and stuff?â she clarified, holding up a piece of heart-shaped candy from the post-Valentineâs Day shopping spree Eclipsa had taken her on weeks ago.
âDunno,â he responded. âMaybe itâs what people used to think hearts looked like or something.â
âNone of the hearts Iâve seen on hunting trips with Dad ever looked like this. Although one was made of chocolate.â She shrugged and popped the treat into her mouth, dumping some more from the bag into her mouth soon after. Her cheeks were puffed out, stretching her heart marks wide and Marco couldnât help but giggle at the sight. âWhat?â she mumbled, still chewing. He pantomimed the sight in front of him, pointing to his own puffed-up cheeks. Star quickly grabbed two more candies, licking the backs of them before sticking them to Marcoâs face, smiling quite smugly at her handiwork. âNow weâre heart twinsies!â She scooted around the table next to him and leaned in, snapping a selfie. âThe kids will love this one.â
He swallowed the last bite of his burrito, thanking the heavens for the new Taco Baco location on campus. The other food options there were⊠lacking, to say the least.
âThe Valentineâs Day Chocopalooza was a smash hit, but I have no clue how to follow it! I canât have peaked after half a year, Marco!â The memories came flooding back: brownie batter as far as the eye could see, melted chocolate inflicting its goopy wrath on every surface in the kitchen, and so much frosting that he still didnât want to even look at the stuff.
âI think they just like spending time with you. Youâre really good with kids, Star. Besides, the only other holiday coming up is Easter, and youâre terrified of it.â
âIt has a giant rabbit that lays eggs, Marco! How do you not see how horrifying that is?â
A loud cough from the bushes behind them might normally have only caught Marcoâs attention for a passing moment, but another voice frantically shushed it. âDennis, quiet! The giant bunny schtick is too good!â
âLudo?â Star and Marco said in unison.
âHello, Star and Marco!â Ludo exclaimed with an emphatic wave. âSo wonderful to see you again! Howâs your kid?â
âSheâs not⊠sheâs fine,â Marco relented, estimating that it wouldnât be worth the hassle. âSo⊠howâs it going?â
âThings are fine, familyâs good. Bird and Spider told me to say hello.â He seemed even twitchier than Marco remembered. Dennis prodded his brother with a wing, clearly trying to be surreptitious about it and failing spectacularly. âAhem, well, there is one teensy tiny issue⊠I ran into Bearnicorn a few days ago. I totally froze up! Things were pretty awkward last time I saw the whole gang and I think Iâm finally ready to try again, but I have no idea how to do that. You might not know this, but I have some issues getting over things,â he stated earnestly. Star and Marco exchanged a bewildered glance - he couldnât be serious, right? Wait, what were they thinking, Ludo could totally say something like that seriously. Ludo took a deep breath and continued, âBut Dennis suggested that I come to you two for help, since I had actually managed to work everything out with you.â
Star munched on another chocolate heart as she mulled over what he was saying. âSo you want our help to⊠make friends?â
The edges of his beak-mouth turned up in an ecstatic smile. âI would like that very much!â
***
âYouâre sure about this, Star?â
âHeâs not hurting anything, Mom.â Star didnât glance up from the piles of clothing she was rummaging through at the sound of her momâs wary question; it wasnât an unfair one, considering the history involved. Even though he was friendly now, Ludo was too much of a wildcard to completely discount as harmless. Still, though, Star saw no reason to suspect any tricks up his sleeve (though there were probably some bugs there). The nostalgia of reconnecting with Ludo was oddly calming for Star, and considering how quickly Marco agreed to help Ludo with his issues, despite the craziness of midterms approaching, she guessed he felt the same. Drawer after drawer bore no fruit in her quest to find the sweater for Marcoâs all-important psychology ensemble - the book and glasses had already been secured.
âThough I didnât say anything, I admit I was initially hesitant about you two sharing living quarters like this, but I must say Marcoâs organizational skills seemed to have rubbed off on you,â Moon said with a snicker. She bent down and checked under the bed, pulling out stray bags of cereal and bottles of soda that Star recognized from her and Marcoâs late night movie marathons slash cuddle sessions. â...somewhat.â
Think Star, think! When was the last time you saw that dang sweater? Letâs see⊠he wore it on our Valentineâs Day date so it canât be that hidden - it was a bit snug on him which made it extra adorably handsome. Heâd said heâd wear it more if I wanted, and I fell over laughing when he wore it just last weekend before we⊠oh corn. Star now recalled where the sweater would almost certainly be as a wave of horror washed over her. She slammed the dresser drawer and whipped around for a mad dash to the nightstand, where- pegasus feathers. Moon had just found the sweater, which was great, and with it was the exact last box she wanted anyone else (and especially her mom) to find, which was... greeeeeeat. Star generally felt she had a solid, trusting bond with her mother, but sheâd never been - and still wasnât - the first person Star blabbed to about her personal affairs.
âMom, I can explain-â
âStar, sweetie, Iâm not upset. What you do with Marco is none of my business, youâre a grown young woman who is more than capable of making her own decisions. If anything Iâm simply relieved that youâre taking such sane precautions. I may be old, but Iâm not ready to earn my place in the Grandma Room quite yet.â Despite her embarrassment, Star had to admit she was eased by her momâs understanding,. âAnd donât worry,â Moon said softly, âIâll handle the subject with your father for you, if youâd like.â And just like that, any comfort was washed away by a tidal wave of beet-red cheeks and incoherent sputtering.
Marco poked his head in, causing Star to yelp and jump off the bed. âHey, you almost ready?â
âYep! Totally, totally, totally ready and not discussing anything about our personal lives with mom!â
âUh-huhâŠâ Marco responded. âWell, Iâm ready down there if you are. Oh hey, thereâs my sweater. Good, weâll need it... I, uh think we have our work cut out for us.â
Star was worried, but also kinda happy to have an excuse to leave the current conversation as soon as Mewmanly possible. She handed the sweater from her mom to Marco, who put it on as they walked downstairs to where Ludo was curiously poking around the living room.
âOh, hello Star! I was just admiring your lovely castle. Bit small for my tastes, but what do I know, haha!â
âYeeeeeeahâŠâ She then leaned over to whisper to Marco. âSo, like, what did he say so far?â
âHe said that he tried practicing talking to people with garbage dolls.â
âWeird.â
âI donât even know where to start, really.â
âHey Ludo,â Star called out, walking over and sitting on the couch next to him. âSo, bud, whatcha need us for here, exactly?â
âAh, yes, well⊠Iâd like to be able to talk to my old friends again without being their boss. You know, the whole scheming to defeat you⊠steal the wand⊠take over Mewni and rule it with an IRON FIST-â He had gotten so worked up that he was on his feet jumping up and down on the couch, but stopped and took a deep breath before chuckling. âAha, see, there it is again! Itâs usually not like this, itâs been months since Iâve even once brought up the wand in a game of cha-radsâŠâ
Yeah, this might be a liiiiiiittle tricky. She tented her fingers as she came up with a plan. Could I⊠nah. Would itâŠ? Mmm, no go. Wait, Star, duh! â Alright, Ludo, itâs time for some patented psychomological work from Star Butterfly, H.P.D. We need to see whatâs going on in your head.â
âOoo, sounds fun! So for starters I think thereâs some lice-â
âNo, no,â she responded calmly, âI mean we need to find whatâs making you tick.â
âYup, Iâve got ticks too!â
Marco put a hand on her shoulder, his worried expression clear even to her peripheral vision. âAre you sure he should be in the same house as Mari-â
âNot now, Marco,â Star hissed, swatting his hand away while keeping her gaze trained on Ludo. âWhy are you having trouble talking to your old friends again? Whatâs the first thing that comes to mind when I say âBoo Flyâ?â
âMessenger.â
âBuff Frog?â
âExcellent spy.â
âLobster Claws?â
âPutting his claws on the wand- oh, wait, I see now! This is like cha-rads but with just words! You almost got me!â
âYeah, yeah, youâre getting it! OK, one more⊠Toffee.â
âCandy! Itâs so delectable with chocolate-â
âYou know what, that oneâs probably for the best,â Star murmured. âWell, Ludo, it seems to me like your biggest problem is that you arenât even thinking about your old crew as regular people. Try this. Think of doing something youâd normally do with your brother.â
âPicking the worms out of our feathers to eat-â
âYeah, no,â Star cut him off. She wanted to help, she really did, but she had a million other things on her mind and now was just not a great time for endless Ludo shenanigans. âI was thinking something less grossâŠâ
âBasketball?â he cheerily offered.
âSure. Imagine yourself playing basketball with your brotherâŠâ She paused a moment as he started miming out dribbling in his seat. âNow imagine doing the same exact thing but with Bearnicorn there instead of your brother.â His arms twitched a bit.
âKeep dribbling, man!â Marco called out encouragingly. Ludo shut his eyes in concentration and after a moment got back into his awkward, gawkish basketball form.
Ludoâs bulbous eyes snapped back open, frantic with glee. âAha, yes! I think I see it now! Oh, thank you, Star and Marco! Iâm off to go find my friends again!â With that, he bolted out the front door and scurried down the road until he was out of sight.
âYou think thatâll work?â Star asked hopefully.
Marco sighed and hugged her from behind. âNot a chance.â
***
âAlright, we have a few minutes left in class so if anyone has any questions on the graded midterms I just passed back, let me know. Otherwise youâre free to leave. Have a good weekend!â
Marco hunched over in his chair as he quickly scanned through the multiple choice questions and short answers. A few stupid mistakes here and there, but still an A - heâd even gotten a smiley face next to his essay assessing some example personality type or another. All in all, things felt right. Karate, sword-fighting, and adventuring were important to him but heâd always felt the most fulfilled helping others with their problems - psychology just seemed right.
A high-pitched, squawking voice interrupted him. âHey, dude, what did you get for number 12?â Marco looked up at another student - Matt, if he was remembering correctly - who was hovering over him at an uncomfortably close distance. Even with how much life had changed in the past few years, his academic reputation stayed the same.
âUh, C,â Marco responded absentmindedly.
âOh, that makes sense. And what about 13?â
âB.â
âAnd⊠14 through 35.â
âJust talk to Mrs. B, man,â Marco irritatedly replied, shaking his head. Normally he enjoyed helping classmates if he could, but he had promised Star heâd helm the planning for the daycareâs Easter party on account of her phobia - well, that, and heâd heard Matt bragging about how heâd blown off studying to play the new Super Slash Sisters game all night long. He looked back down to check over one last page and grinned to himself. The final essay prompt hadnât been for a grade, but instead asked a simpler question: Why are you here? Without context, it might have seemed odd or downright rude, but the teacher had spent the first few months of the semester encouraging all the students to reflect on their goals and what they hoped to gain from the psychology program. The blunt prompt had caught him off guard, but after realizing what it was asking, heâd spent probably about as much time as he had on the rest of the exam combined describing his experiences and motivations on Mewni that drove him to help and support others.
Of course, he couldnât help but talk about Star at length as part of that. His adorable, brave, compassionate best friend that inspired him to be more. Where would he even be now without her? He could still be at college, he supposed, but that wasnât saying much. It was humorous to imagine: waking up, being driven to college by his mom, waving hello to Jackie every day (his foolproof plan to woo her had involved eventually moving past nodding, after all), getting straight As, working fruitlessly towards a red belt after classes, then⊠what? The world had so much more to offer him, and vice versa, and Star was the one whoâd helped him realize that. The words had just flowed right out of his pen, paragraphs and paragraphs of glowing praise and affection, enough to leave his chest feeling as warm as it did when she was physically there.
âHey, Marco, I have a question-â
Stirred from his contemplative state, Marco wheeled on the figure that had just tapped him on the shoulder, ready to tell Matt off for interrup- oh.
âLudo? What are you doing here?â
âOh, well, I was in the neighborhood and I thought Iâd just drop in! But also, please help me. I did what you said but then I dribbled Boo Fly on the ground and he got really upset and-â
Marco sighed. Hope Starâs fine with me being late.
***
Most days, Star loved everything about her job. It was hard work, but it was so satisfying bringing smiles and warmth to the faces of the kids in her care and seeing them light up with stories to tell their families at the end of each day. Her hours were flexible, she got to spend time with Marco, and Antonio was a wonderful boss.
Today, however, was not most days.
Of freaking course Easter was Antonioâs favorite holiday.
The kids seemed to be enjoying his antics as he pranced around in a bunny costume, but for the life of her she just couldnât understand why. Is it a normal rabbit or a person-sized one? No one even seems to know what it is! Does it lay bird eggs or rabbit eggs? Both are pretty horrifying if you ask me! If you get chocolate eggs in your Easter basket, does it lay them too? Iâm not eating any soft brown rabbit droppings, Marco! They didnât even get any days off for it, so Star was convinced the best thing to do was ignore its existence as a holiday entirely. Her incredibly valid concerns had largely been met with amusement, even by Marco, but Antonio had at least offered to let her keep her distance and work behind-the-scenes for the party they had planned, which was now going on in the main playroom.
Packing baskets with candy was easy enough. Chocolate, gummies, cookies, donuts. Candy corn for the humans and candied corn for the Mewmans - as much as the humans liked Mewman corn, they hadnât quite accepted it as a valid dessert yet. There were a few special ones marked down as well. Some marshmallow mice for the Septarians, a ribeye steak for the Johansen - her third cousin or something like that, she wasnât even sure exactly whose kid he was - and some dried bugs for the kappas⊠wait, since when were there any kappas at the daycare? She yanked the full list out from underneath the pile of sweets and quickly scanned it. 105? Arenât there only 104 kids in the program this semester?
She almost missed it at the very top of the list: âManudo Avariusâ. She vaguely remembered hearing about a sibling with that name at some point⊠maybe they just joined? Something still seemed off to Star but she pushed it aside and finished the last of the baskets just in time for the end of the party. As the kids left, Star cheerfully handed out the baskets to the tune of joyous squeals from the kids and careful warnings from the parents to not eat too much at once. Pffftt, come on, I eat cake for breakfast and I turned out fine!
Curiously, she hadnât spotted anyone that resembled Ludo yet even as the remaining crowd dwindled to almost nothing. Antonio had already begun to put away decorations when she finally spotted the figure, taking the basket over to them. But when they turned around, showing a braided beard⊠oh pegasus feathers.
âStar Butterfly! So good to see you again.â
âHey Ludo,â she said. âAre you picking up Manudo?â
âWhy would Menudo be here?â
âWell the paper said Manudo-â
âNo, no, thatâs not how itâs spelled, but besides, Iâm here by myself. A large man with a magnificent beard asked me for my name and told me I was missing a party with lots of sweets! He kept calling me a child and I said I was a man and that my name was Ludo, but who cares when thereâs free chips, am I right?â He reached into one of the five chip bags in his arms and stuffed a handful into his beak.
Man-udo. Dangit, Antonio. âSo⊠good to see you, but what brings you here?â
âWell, I talked to Marco just the other day because it still just wasnât working, but then I tried something else and that still didnât work, so now I need your help again. It all started on Tuesday-â
Star slumped down into a beanbag chair and reached into the basket, deftly avoiding the bugs as she searched for cookies to nibble on. This is going to be a while.
***
âSo what did you say this place was?â Tom asked as he glanced around the restaurant. The vibrant cherry-red booths and soulful singer crooning over the speakers created a very different atmosphere than anything in the Underworld, but he liked it.
Sitting across from him, Marco downed another fry and took a sip of his water before responding. âDiners are the best places to go for comfort food. Burgers, onion rings, waffles, all that kinda stuff. Emilioâs is the best in town.â
Next to Marco, Star was wolfing down onion rings by the handful. âThe secret is that he hired a bunch of Eclipsaâs old chefs, so they make great Mewman and monster food too. Donât tell Mom but their Mewnipendence Day pies are the best Iâve ever had - though they donât call it that anymore.â She was still chewing when she spoke, but after so many years of knowing Star he had no trouble understanding her garbled words. âItâs really cool that Emilio was able to get back on his feet after the incident.â
âWhat incident?â Tom asked, eliciting an irritated groan from Marco.
âSo basically, a few years ago, Ponyhead and I-â
âOh boy, a Ponyhead story,â Janna sarcastically said, rolling her eyes, and Tom elbowed her side.
An older man with olive skin approached the table. ââDoes everything taste alright? If your dining experience isnât absolutely perfect, please let me know, I can get you anything. More to drink, dessert, maybe some mushrooms...â
âItâs great, Emilio,â Marco mumbled.
âGood, goodâŠâ Emilio was smiling a bit too hard as he backed away, his eyes lingering on Marcoâs meal.
Marco caught Tomâs curious gaze and buried his head in his hands. âLook, itâs a long story. There was this pizza, then spiraling alcoholism, then a bit of arsonâŠâ
Jannaâs hand, resting on Tomâs leg, unconsciously twitched as she perked up. âWoah, OK, now I actually do want to hear this.â
âToo late, no take backs.â
âAww, youâre no fun.â
âSo anyway, we picked the restaurant this time so have you two decided what weâre doing after?â Oh crud, we forgot to plan. Tomâs initial instinct was to claim a beginnerâs mistake, since it was only the second of their monthly double dates and their first time planning the after-dinner entertainment⊠except the actual reason was that he and Janna happened to get into their first major makeout session the night they had set aside for planning, burning thoughts of accomplishing anything else to a crisp in the process. Star and Marco were the last people that would be squicked out by romantic affection- that wasnât the problem. After years of slacking on responsibilities and having any kind of social life at all in a misguided attempt to chase after Star, he couldnât help but feel extra guilty over this specific lapse.
Janna leaned in, whispering in his ear. âCanât we just hit up the Sands of Eternal Torment?â
âFor the tenth time, Jan, no,â he hissed through his teeth. âThereâs, like, a 25% chance youâd all have your souls violently ripped from your bodies.â
âOnly 25? Ew, nevermind, just let them pick.â She leaned in even closer, her breath hot in his ear. âIf itâs somewhere boring, we could always just sneak away and-â
âGood evening!â Tom squeaked and quickly turned his head at the sudden boisterous call from his other side, almost smacking Janna in the temple with his horn in the process. It was an incredibly short bird creature with a thick grey beard - a kappa, if Tom was remembering correctly. It wasnât their same waiter from before, but hey, what did he know about how Earth restaurants worked?
Tom held out his glass, but the supposed waiter ignored it. âYeah, can I have a refill on the demonade, please?â Star and Marco glanced over at the waiter, their eyes opening wide before they both groaned and smacked their faces on the table in unison. Alright, maybe heâs not a waiter then.
***
âStar...â Marco uttered. Star removed her wandering lips from his neck and propped herself up to look lovingly at him, shivering slightly as she abandoned the warmth of his bare skin. It had been probably over a year now since theyâd first become more intimate like this, but the fire still burned just as hot. Heck, it was better now than those first forays, Star reckoned; with time came confidence and experience that let them enjoy themselves and each other to the absolute fullest. Theyâd both had busy lives the last few months or so, and with the end of the semester fast approaching Star knew they would be even busier soon, but none of that seemed to matter in this time theyâd taken for themselves. Even after a break for a shower and snacks, their present cozy state under the blanket with nothing between them still felt as radiant as any proper afterglow could.
âMhmm?â A devious thought crossed her mind, but she tried her best to feign innocence as she slowly slithered down his body, leaving fiery trails of kisses down his chest and sweet, sweet abs.
âNot that I donât like, you know, doing this but I donât, uh, know if I have it in me for another rouuuuuuuu-â His voice shot up an octave and his whole body jolted as she blew raspberries on his belly button and snuck her arms up to tickle around his armpits. âStar, please- I canât- Iâm- canât breathe-â he sputtered out between hysterical bouts of laughter.
She was laughing too by the time his flailing pushed her off of him. Before heâd even collected himself, he lunged forward, trying to catch her with a determined-but-still-goofy grin on his face. Star dodged and backed away from the bed entirely as Marco grasped at her limbs. He finally gave up, lying on his stomach while resting his head on his chin and staring up at her. Even though his tush was right there for the ogling, Star was instead captivated by his enamored gaze and dopey smile.
âDangit, Marco, you know I canât resist that look,â she huffed, allowing him to take her hands and pull her next to him on the bed.
âI know,â he said smugly. âYouâre not the only one who can weaponize being all lovey dovey.â
âThe student has become the master,â she quipped, their hands still joined between them as they lay on their sides.
âBut I do mean it, Star. I love every single part of you, and thatâs not gonna change. Things have been hectic lately for both of us, but stuff with the daycare, what you want to do for a living, Ludo⊠we can figure that all out. Just reach into your pocket if you need me.â
She gently patted his head, running her fingers through his freshly shampooed hair. It was alluring to smell, to hold, to feel brushing up against her. Though the problems they faced now were of a different kind than the forces of evil that theyâd spent their earlier years tackling, his presence was still what she needed most to ground her and make everything feel alright. Her face dipped in for a kiss, initially short and sweet but quickly succumbing to a familiar hunger. She pounced on him but miscalculated her momentum, rolling the whole way over him and pulling him with her so he lay on top. Not complaining, she thought as she hugged him close and indulged in the sensory bliss of his skin on hers.
He lightly rested his forehead on hers. âDo you, um, mind if we maybe donât, yâknowâŠâ he trailed off sheepishly.
âMarco,â she crooned, holding his face in her hands. âHow many times do I have to say it: I donât want to do anything if youâre not comfortable with it.â
âI-I can try that, um, thing again, though, instead if- if you want?â Oh sweet, sweet Marco. Even after years together, he still couldnât rest until he was sure heâd done everything he could for her.
âYeah,â she implored, breathy with the mounting anticipation as he began a trail of kisses downward.
âWhat thing are you two talking about?â Time seemed to stop as any building pleasure completely evaporated. Marco grabbed the crumpled bedsheet and pulled it over the two of them as the couple stared at the window in complete incredulity to where Ludo was standing on a flapping Dennisâs back. âWell, anyway, I need some more advice-â
âGET. OUT!â
***
Marco rested his chin in his hands while Star paced in front of him. Three months. Three months of Ludo showing up at the most inopportune times, three months of Star trying and failing to feel satisfied with her efforts at the daycare, three months of a semester so intense that they were both at their witâs end with all of it. Ludo had once again come to the college for advice after his 26th attempt to regain his old friends failed just as catastrophically as the previous 25. He was persistent, Marco had to give him that, and the old monster crew had even been pretty supportive when Star and Marco had tracked them down themselves and explained the situation. The issue seemed to be entirely from within Ludoâs own mind, which made it a dozen times harder to solve. It was the last day of the semester and theyâd been haunted by thoughts of every minute of summer vacation spent throwing themselves at the brick wall of Ludoâs psyche, so theyâd made a pact that today was all or nothing. Neither wanted to ditch Ludo, he wasnât a bad guy, but enough was enough.
âAny ideas?â Star piped up, sounding entirely lost and uncertain as her gaze kept nervously darting over to Ludo who was brushing his beard and snacking on its droppings in the empty playroom. âWeâve tried psychology, reverse psychology, pep talks, reverse reverse psychology, all-you-can-eat chips, ygolohscysp-â
âWhich still isnât a thing,â Marco interrupted.
âWell Iâm sorry, Iâm not the one with a fancy degree, Marco!â she growled, tossing her arms out. âUgh, sorry, this is just so frustrating. Doesnât he have, like, a thousand brothers and sisters he could hang out with? If he canât relax around the monsters, why does he always have to pester us when he could-â Her pacing instantly halted as her eyes opened wide. âOh crud.â
He stood up and placed a hand on her shoulder reassuringly, unsure whether her apparent epiphany was a good or bad thing. âStar?â
âHe came to us for help becoming comfortable around his old pals again because he already was comfortable around us.â
âWay too comfortable,â Marco muttered with a wince that Star mirrored. They were still a little bit traumatized from the shower incident. âBut that means-â
âHe never needed his monster pals, he just needed⊠friends,â she said just as he had the revelation on his own.
Marco smacked his forehead and sighed. âAnd he spent so much time fixating on this one thing, and we spent so much time just trying to solve his problem and shove him out the door, that we never tried just⊠being his friends.â
They both looked through the little window into the playroom, where Ludo saw them and waved with a giant smile.
Star buried her face in her hands, messing up her hair like she was prone to do whenever she was feeling frazzled. âUgh, I feel terrible.â
âSame, but⊠we canât be his only friends, though. I feel bad for him, but I donât know if I have it in me to be his BFF.â
âYouâre right, youâre right, but who else could even handle that? Who? The guyâs so hyper and weird, ugh, he reminds me of me as a kid, except way less cute.â
â...a kid.â They both mumbled simultaneously. It was as if a single lightbulb had gone off above both of them at once as all the pieces fell into place. âThatâs it!â
Star bolted out the door to gather the handful of children that hadnât been picked up yet while Marco got Ludo. A few minutes later, they met up at the rec center basketball court where Antonio helped them set up some kid-sized hoops. It took a bit of coaxing, but after a few minutes Ludo was having the time of his life tossing the ball around. The kids seemed to enjoy it, too, as he regaled them with tales of his adventures on Earth (and a few about a space princess with a cyclops and robot for friends that Marco was pretty sure he made up). Star and Marco had joined for a few games but both decided to just step back and watch from the bleachers for a while.
As they observed the scene, listening to the ecstatic wails of everyone on the court as they ran around with the ball, there was a smile on Starâs face that was more content than Marco had seen in a while. âSee? You made their whole week just by giving them someone fun to play with,â Marco said, lacing his fingers through her hand. âThey like you a lot more than they like balloons and candy.â
âEven I donât need candy with you here being so sweet,â she cooed, nuzzling into his shoulder, neither taking their eyes off the courts. Ludo passed the ball to Trevor, who spun around and passed it back in a fluid motion that allowed Ludo to score. The blissful, carefree sight was soothing after the intensity of Marcoâs life lately. Just some kids and a small bird man having fun playing a game together⊠life didnât always have to be so complicated. The serene moment abruptly ended when Ludoâs beak caught on the rim, leaving him dangling above the ground and shrieking for help. As Star squeezed Marcoâs hand, sighed, and stood up to go help the poor kappa, Marco knew it could never be truly simple either.

[QZGS meta] whatâs in an OP? dawning glory (pt 3)
(part 1) (part 2)Â
This is the third and last post in my little series analyzing the opening theme of The Kingâs Avatar Season 2! Honestly, this whole thing became way longer than I was expecting. I guess this is what happens when all my immense amount of love for this series, accumulated over years of no-donghua-updates, overlaps with my immense amount of love for anime openings.Â
Watched the first and second episodes yesterday, and they really sparked a lot of joy. :D I missed Blue River so much :D
Yesterday, they released the OST for Season 2, which includes the TV cut and full versions of the OP and ED, as well as two insert songs, and the instrumental versions of all of the above. Iâve yet to find anywhere that lets me download the audio files (hoping theyâll be reuploaded to youtube or bilibili soon), but in the meantime you can listen here. Theyâre really good songs! https: //www. kuwo. cn/album_detail/15792659
Anyway, letâs finish up this OP analysis!
Now here, we reach the true climax as we enter the chorus section. This next segment is definitely the highest-energy part of the entire opening. Itâs a montage of Happyâs characters showing off their moves, timed to the music; thereâs not too much deeper meaning, but damn if it doesnât look fantastic. The animation flows from one character and scene to the next so smoothly, so beautifully, itâs just incredibly hype to see. This is what you get when you specifically choreograph/animate sequences for the opening instead of just reusing shots from the main show! (Parts of some of these shots appeared in episode 1, but I do honestly think that itâs more likely that the show reused shots from the opening than the other way around, just because of how perfectly the OP fits together. I also donât think itâs super noticeable in-show; Iâve just been watching this obsessively.)
In particular I love the line that kicks this all off: âjust put on your battle armor and step onto the road to the unknown.â Specifically, though, the rhythm of the lyric is, âjiu pi shang zhan jia ta shang wei zhi qian fang,â with emphasizing accents on the -ang sounds. This isnât how you would divide the phrase naturally, but because the (syncopated!!) melody accents these notes/syllables, the rhyming effect really stands out and it feels as clever and satisfying as a rap lyric. Moreover, the emphasis times juuust right with the attacks of Soft Mist, Steamed Bun Invasion, and Windward Formation, a perfect example of how music and visuals mutually reinforce each other for maximum cool effect.Â
Itâs generally easier to rhyme in Chinese than English, because of a smaller phonetic vocabulary. From the chorus onward, the key rhyme is on the â-angâ sound (think âahngâ or âongâ, not âaangâ like the Avatar), which is a good choice - powerful, reverberant. The asymmetry of the syllableâs use in this section - the songâs lines are all different lengths at this part, so youâre kept on your toes as to when the pattern will reappear - helps add to the engaging excitement of the song. This is also the syllable used for most of the rhymes in the second half of the first OP.Â
jiu pi shang zhan jia ta shang wei zhi qian fang
hui qi shou zhong wo jin de na shu guang
you ni men zai lu shang__
shi li liang
I really love One Inch Ashâs design. Concealed Light had a big redesign for this season, and honestly I like it as well. And notice here that heâs holding a book - exactly how we left Luo Ji when we saw him last!Â
âWaving the light clenched tightly in our handâ - that is to say, brandishing our light as our weapon, no matter what form it may take - a sword, a book, our hope and determination.Â
On a purely musical note (ha), right at this point, specifically the measure beginning with âéŁæć
,â you can hear a three-note âoooâ harmony line in the background, and wow itâs so subtle but I love it so much! A similar three-note line actually appears earlier too (during the âcrossing the frozen finish line,â right as the music is building up), also to great effect. Â
We follow Concealed Lightâs gaze upward to the building to see Deception running along the wall, from which he does a flip and slashes downward with twin blades. I love that transition a lot, but my favorite transition of this entire sequence has to be the following one:
Yes! Deceptionâs cross slash resolves perfectly into the cross held by Little Cold Hands. Itâs so fast and so natural you donât even notice it, and thatâs the absolute beauty of it. The first time I saw this, I was in awe - the animators really brought their A-game to this, far better than I ever would have dared hope for this series.
And Little Cold Hands is so pretty! When we got our first art of her official design, the comments were filled with people simping for her, and honestly, valid. Iâm surprised her hair is purple instead of pink, but thatâs just a minor thing.Â
Thereâs something especially powerful about how she raises her cross in time with the lyric âhaving you all here [with me] on this road,â and then the cross flashing brilliantly with âitâs power.â More than any other role, the healer is a team player. And this theme of team togetherness is particularly important for An Wenyi, who is deeply moved by the teamâs perhaps illogical faith in him. Remember that analogy Ye Xiu tells him, of the straw tied to the deluxe mitten crab?Â
An aside: listening to this, I always thought the line should be æäœ 仏ćšèș«æ instead of æäœ 仏ćšè·Żäž, because it still fits the rhyme, because my past experience has somewhat conditioned me to expect that phrase, and because the full message of âhaving you by my side is powerâ just makes me wanna tear up like what a good line! So it felt like a missed opportunity that they didnât use that. But as it turns out, the final iteration of this chorus in the full version of the OP does, in fact, use âby my sideâ! And I think making this tiny tweak to the lyric the final time you here it just makes it that much stronger :â)
Iâm also just a big fan of the âitâs powerâ melodic flourish in general, since it comes as a surprise. You kind of expect the melody to end with the previous phrase, but the extra notes here add a really nice emphatic beat to finish off the line.Â
So to recap the transitions: we see Soft Mist falling from the sky and get a close up of her face as she stabs her spear; this takes us to a closeup of Steamed Bunâs face facing roughly the same direction before we zoom out to his torso and he slashes from lower left of the screen to upper right; following the motion of that slash we see Windward Formationâs torso rotate in that direction as the camera zooms out farther; we follow the rays of his attack to see One Inch Ash drawing his sword; we zoom in on the flashing blade and zoom out on Concealed Lightâs glowing book; we follow his gaze upward to see Deception running along the building behind him; Deception leaps and slashes and the slash becomes Little Cold Handsâ cross, which raises up and triggers an explosion. Itâs just so dynamic and smooth even without taking place in one continuous setting, and it just really, really gets you hyped.Â
Also, starting from Happyâs team picture at the start of the chorus, which is during the day, it feels like Soft Mist and Steamed Bunâs moves are at late afternoon, Windward Formation and One Inch Ash take us to nighttime, and then you can see the first rays of morning in Concealed Light and Deceptionâs segments. This continuity also definitely helps with the feeling of natural flow through these scenes.Â
Anyway, this entire action segment is just so beautiful, I could watch it on loop. But we still have the final segment of this OP to analyze, so letâs keep going.
After the action sequences of the climax, we settle down a bit now as we approach the end. Here we see the Excellent Era team picture, in the same style as the team pics we saw earlier, but presented separately. It makes sense, as the role they play in the story is different from the roles of all the other teams.Â
Sun Xiang, Liu Hao, and Cui Li are at the bottom. Because weâre panning up, these three are the first we see. At first glance, the way theyâre positioned is fairly consistent with the team pics weâve seen already: Captain Sun Xiang at center-right, the largest figure; vice-captain Liu Hao, manager Cui Li in the background.Â
Sun Xiangâs position and expression is really the only one that fits the healthy pattern of the teams weâve seen already - looking toward the camera, a confident (though arrogant) smile. He might be misguided, but thereâs hope for him yet. Notice how Liu Hao isnât even looking at the camera, which as weâve seen before is somewhat of an indication of how unified and focused the team is toward its goal; instead, Liu Hao is doing his own thing, determined to prioritize his own desires over whatâs best for the team. And manager Cui Li is in this image too, despite not even being a player. His sinister presence reflects the unhealthy interference of the business side in the gaming side. Excellent Eraâs downfall comes about because of its prioritization of profit over victory.
As we pan up, Excellent Eraâs logo comes into view. Itâs larger than any of the other team logos weâve seen so far, spanning around three-quarters of the screen whereas the others looked to span no more than half. Excellent Eraâs legacy is a weighty one, to date the only team to have ever won three championships, and consecutively to boot.Â
Itâs this immense, shining logo that seems to be casting Tao Xuan on the left into shadow. He cuts a large figure, reflecting the deep impact his actions have had upon the main plot of this story, even though heâs only now appearing for the first time in the donghua.
However, heâs also turned away from the camera, such that we can barely even see his closed eye. Because of that, itâs difficult to read his expression, but the impression given by this pose is not one of vindictive pride, but one of shame, as though he canât quite bear to face what heâs done. On some level, no matter how he might try to rationalize it as necessary, Tao Xuan knows that his profit-driven betrayal of Ye Xiu was a pretty awful thing to do. It might be this amount of guilt that leads him to offer Ye Xiu a wish granted, a tribute to their years of friendship and partnership before their ties are severed completely.
In the end, Tao Xuanâs greed leaves him with nothing really to show for it. What had he gained? What had he lost? Those realizations are still a ways off in the story, but I like how this OP is already hinting at the depth of his character. Tao Xuan isnât some glasses-flashing, evil-laughing, one-dimensional antagonist; he is in fact very realistic for the setting. We can condemn his actions and priorities, but at the same time we can understand how he ended up here.
As for Su Mucheng, her eyes are closed as well. Sheâs brightly illuminated, but pointedly turned away from all of the others in Excellent Era; she knows the direction of her future, and that it no longer lies with Excellent Era. Her loyalty was always to Ye Xiu, and as soon as he was banished, her relationship to the team was professional and nothing more.Â
âThis light hidden in my heart is burningâ - there are many ways to read this lyric and what exactly the light referenced here is, but because the line is paired with this image, I naturally think about Su Muchengâs situation. Despite her pretty-vase, sweet-girl appearance, she holds a deep, profound anger at everything that happened regarding Excellent Era. Itâs a testament to her immense strength of character that she lasted the remaining one and a half years of her contract in this hostile environment.Â
Yet even as she resolves to cut ties, thereâs a sadness in her expression. She was here from the very beginning as well, when Excellent Era was no more than an internet cafe, and it pains her immensely that the powerhouse, championship team that they and her brother had built from the ground up would ultimately meet this tragic end.
Itâs interesting to note that both of the âredeemableâ characters here (namely Su Mucheng and Sun Xiang) are on the right, more brightly-lit side of the screen, so thereâs a nice little dividing line you can draw there. Sun Xiangâs eyes are still looking toward the left, though, revealing how his character development still has yet to play out.
From there we cut to Ye Xiu holding Lord Grimâs account card. Heâs standing back on top of the roof from the beginning of the OP, now in full daylight.
As mentioned⊠the animators really went ham on the bangs animation.
Ye Xiu turns away from the railing, the camera cuts to an image of Happyâs logo on a flag waving in the wind, and then we zoom out to see the current members of Team Happy gathered together in uniform, standing proud in the light of day. Left to right, Steamed Bun, Tang Rou, Luo Ji, Ye Xiu, An Wenyi, Wei Chen, Chen Guo. Presumably, this will be Happyâs lineup by the end of the season.Â
Up until now, weâve only seen the real players separate from each other - theyâve all been in different places, never even in the same frame together. (This, of course, also contrasts the pro team pics that we have, which show everyone together.) Halfway through the OP, we got the group shot of them meeting in game with their characters. And now, theyâve finally met up in the real world as well.Â
One thing I like about this final pose is how it compares to the final pose of the OVA OP. Itâs the same kind of power-pose vibe, but there we only had Ye Xiu, Chen Guo, and Tang Rou. Look at how weâve grown since then! Theyâre well on their way to being a proper pro team!Â
And thatâs a wrap! With this final image of Team Happy gathered together, weâre ready to enter the episode proper.Â
So letâs talk about the OP as a whole. Generally, an OP serves a couple of main roles: a) tells you a bit about what the show is about, b) gives you an overall feeling / mood for the show, c) gets you hyped and ready to watch the upcoming episode.
How well does this opening achieve those goals? Pretty well, as weâve seen. Past OPs did a pretty good job of setting the mood, but they honestly just put some pretty visuals on the screen, only vaguely aligned to the music, and called it a day. This OP, however, has a cohesive storyline to tell, framed around Team Happyâs coming together (following the tagline of this season). Even in such a short span of time, it manages to convey so much information about its story and characters, both overt and implicit (as I hope this series of posts has managed to convince you). Paired with the music, which has its own deeper meanings encoded in the lyrics, the OP becomes incredibly effective and memorable as it makes its statement.
I mentioned an âinterest curveâ earlier (interest in the sense of interesting, not the money); this is part of the standard formula for anime opening songs, in my experience. Iâm a little too lazy to draw a graph myself, so take a look at this image:
(source: https: //www. researchgate. net/figure/Example-of-an-interest-curve-for-a-successful-entertainment-experience_fig1_333917625 )
Although not all of the relative heights and segment lengths are accurate in this specific case, hopefully the general shape of the interest curve is enough to demonstrate my point. Youâve got the A-B peak at the opening instrumental segment, the C-D peak/arc over verse 1, the D-E-F peak/arc over verse 2, then the sharp F-G-H peak over the chorus before dropping off for a smooth landing right into the episode. This general pattern is effective at holding the viewerâs focus and managing their excitement over the course of this one and a half minutes.Â
Visually, the OP is just such a treat for the eyes. Iâve already talked about many of the little details I love - lighting, character designs, animations, transitions, etc. - but all in all the new animation studio is doing a really good job here. An OP is how you hook people, and Iâd definitely feel comfortable using this to try and bait people into watching this show.Â
One comment I want to add is about the incorporation of the credits, which we didnât see until the episode premiere. I donât think thereâs anything too exciting to say (and I also donât have access to any images right now since the OP was only shown in episode 2), but the fonts and styling were a nice choice - it gave a gaming vibe, but if I recall it still used a serif font, so it didnât feel overly modern - and the text positioning generally complements instead of distracting. I also liked how they showed the lyrics! I didnât really expect them to include them onscreen, or if they did, I thought they would just be plain subs like they were in this video. But in the actual OP that plays at the beginning of the episode, theyâre as much a part of the art as the credits!
If I had to make any criticism, my biggest complaint about the OP is, I think, the singers. I think having two different singers trade off can work nicely, but in this case, the switches are jarring because their voices are so different. The first singer has a lower, gravely voice, while the second singerâs voice sounds much brighter and more nasally. Furthermore, the first switch doesnât come until weâre fully halfway through the song, which means that by that point weâre already used to this first singer. Itâs also strange that theyâd switch back to the first voice at the climax of the song, when I think the second voice would suit the high-energy segment much better. Switching from second to first right at this point feels like weâre actually taking a step down in energy, which is the opposite of what should be happening here.Â
Still, my main problem isnât with the voice switching but with the voices themselves, and I think the voices are something I could get used to. The third switch, going from the first voice back to the second voice during the shot of Excellent Era, is much less jarring than the others - I actually like how it feels like the solo is passing naturally from one person to the next, emphasizing the ideals of this not being a single-player game and all that. For that transition in particular, I think (because of the added âitâs powerâ flourish) it happens too quickly for one person to sing it comfortably, so having another person pick up the line works best. And I do like how the voices sound when they overlay together for the final lines of the song.Â
So, overall? Overall, this OP is really damn good. Itâs everything I could have asked for and more. After such a long wait, the OP, at least, does not disappoint, and Iâm extremely excited to see what the series has in store for us.Â
If youâve read to this point, thank you! I like this series a lot, as you can probably see, and Iâm treating it as my glory :)

Trending 27th - January 2020
What have been your efforts in the campaign for SaveWOY and what are your upcoming plans to save WOY? Now this is a question worth answering!
In the past, I made a little list of the things I did to support SaveWOY and bring awareness to Wander Over Yonderâs existence and its third season plans. Since then, Iâve done a whole lot more from hand-drawn art to more intricate art. Some of them are almost as special as that signed poster @peepsqueak got from the WOY crew as a token of their gratitude.
Hereâs an updated list of everything I did for SaveWOY so far:
Attended the SaveWOY picnic at Griffith Park, where I got to sign a banner.
Pointed out various higher-ups involved in the business of Disney television.
Sent several letters to the higher-ups, some of which had envelopes with an image of the downed space pod taped to them.
Started a weekly Twitter post series, SaveWOY Thought of the Week.
Made Lite-Brite art of Wander and Lord Hater, which Craig McCracken and Francisco Angones liked.
Attended D23 2017 with an Operation: FORCE drawing of Hater, a colored page of Wander and Sylvia and a few facts about WOY, and an orange pen with a green hat (I got the hat from the aforementioned picnic) - there, I signed a bench with Wander and the phrase, âNever hurts to help.â
Signed my name, drew Wander (and my own character, Jacken DeBox), and wrote, âHappiest place in outer space!â on the highest beam for Star Wars: Galaxyâs Edge.
Wrote a letter (and drew Wander) for the victims of the Las Vegas tragedy with the message, âThe darkest times call for the sunniest smiles!â
Got Craig to reveal the name of the ship (said to play a BIG part in S3, made a cameo in Future-Worm) when I commented that weâd have to figure out the name - his response: âThe ship is called The Star Nomad.â
Wrote a couple of cards to two Disney higher-ups with the message, âA little nice makes naughty think twice!â
Drew Dominator in a situation that might take place several seconds after she passes the downed space pod, just in time for NoĂ«l Wellsâs B-day.
Made the Star Nomad with LEGO Digital Designer.
Made three images in the style of the original Star Wars trilogy VHS set.
Posted 50 WOYS3PredictionPolls on Twitter.
Made an image of âThe First 5 Yearsâ with over 140 individuals (including the question marks for 3 new mains and 2 new regulars - I still want to know what they look like!) and one cleverly made Hidden Mickey.
Shared WOY-related images from my 1st 5 Years fan art on Twitter acknowledging the B-days of most of the voice actors (Charlie Adler, Kevin Michael Richardson, Ken Marino, Josh Sussman, H. Michael Croner, James Adomian, Jason Ritter, and Piotr Michael clearly noticed).
Typed a summary of how I think the S3 premiere would go.
Typed lyrics to âLetâs Go Soarinâ and Explorinâ,â a song from my aforementioned S3 premiere summary. Wouldnât it be great if Andy Bean used it?
Made a microgame with WarioWare: D.I.Y. where the player has to spin the fan to make the Star Nomad fly. Part of a chorus from âLetâs Go Soarinâ and Explorinââ included.
Started FanCharacterFriday on Twitter - more Tumblr users seem to like Dr. Otmar Vunderbar.
Made a short comic page of Lord Hater trying to break out of the DTVA vault plus a sly reminder that Disney owns the rights to WOY.
Shared a list of potential episode titles for S3.
Made an actual LEGO Star Nomad based on the model made with LDD. Hopefully, those who worked on WOY have noticed. In case you missed it, hereâs a picture...

Now, the ideas I have in mind for further boosting support for the campaign. I may not be able to do most of them myself, but they are certainly for everyoneâs consideration.
Provide updated information of higher-ups (if any).
As soon as we find out what Kid Cosmic looks like, expect fan art of him saying, âWatch my show and tell your friends so weâll make that Mousey Company pay for what they did to my half-brother!â
Another SaveWOY picnic - if thereâs one in my general area, you can count me in.
LP album artwork of My Fair Hatey.
A mural identical to that of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate consisting of not just characters from WOY, but also characters who were said to debut in S3 and characters whoâd fit in perfectly, namely some of my OCs.
Pumpkin stencils of the main characters for Halloween.
Drawings of various WOY characters stuck on the ex-secret planet explaining why they need to leave said planet. Maybe I could also show how the galaxyâs villains would react if they learn that Lord Dominatorâs been bested by Lord Hater.
Drawings consisting of SaveWOY-related messages spoken by the main characters from Disney shows that got at least three seasons (e.g. DuckTales, Fish Hooks), tons of love from the viewers and the executives (e.g. Gravity Falls), or both (e.g. SvtFoE, Mickey Mouse â13).
Example with Phineas and Ferb:
Phineas: âWe may be creative and famous, but weâre not the ones who came up with the Star Nomad. Itâs the ship powered by orbbles! Orbbles! Iâd LOVE to see it take flight, wouldnât you? If you let Mr. McCracken end the show his way, and not the executive way, which, truth be told, is the absolute worst, Wander will surely be elated!â
Ferb: âThe Orbble Transporter was invented by conjoined twin brothers, voiced by the performers of the theme song.â
Irving (peeking in from the side): âSpeaking of voices, the titular main character sounds JUST LIKE ME! How could you possibly resist?! And look, just because Iâm the biggest fan of these guys (gesturing to P&F) doesnât mean I have no interest in whatâs planned for the furry orange fella!â
Since Iâm a full-time Disneyland cast member, I should be able to make contacts with anyone who might have more clues about what S3 would entail. It might be a long shot, but if Iâm able to convince Disney that WOYâs influence on my life boosted my chance at gaining employment at the company, they should understand.
A weekly Jeopardy-type pop quiz on Twitter - hereâs the catch: you must refrain from finding information online when you read the answer (I bet you that the most hardcore fans of the most popular shows will get most of the questions wrong).
Example: This arachnomorph got his name from a dog tag he swallowed when he infiltrated a fish-shaped ship. He later became Lord Haterâs beloved pet.
-Who is Captain Tim?
Summaries of S3 episodes I made up myself a while back.
More fan-made characters - my most recent is an elected official of Cluckon, Mayor Spye C. Drumstick.
Conjuring a logo that best fits the status of S3/TV movie - Wander Over Yonder: The New Galaxy (the center would have the silhouette of the Star Nomad with Wander and Sylvia on it).
Brainstorming possible ideas for the three new main characters.
If all else fails, I suggest we make a web comic based on the hints we accumulated back in 2016 and what we learned from the cameo in Future-Wormâs finale. Team Sea3on has been taking that approach for SatAM Sonic the Hedgehog S3, though they are also making an animated version.
Thatâs about all Iâve got so far. In closing, I have several questions to ask as the new decade kicks off.
Disney executives: Are you even listening to us WOY fans? What more do you want? Iâve done so much for the campaign that I feel Iâm entitled to know everything that was planned for WOYâs third and final season, especially now that Iâm working full-time for your company. If you tell us what your demands are, weâd be happy to oblige.
@crackmccraigen: Are you aware of how hard the fans and I have been trying to talk Disney into giving you the chance for true closure? Weâll make sure we watch KC when it comes out on Netflix. If weâre lucky, we might see WOY get added to Disney+, where it should get that closure, assuming youâll have finished KC your way before then.
@suspendersofdisbelief: I know youâre super busy with DuckTales and you love the plans for WOY S3 so much that you canât bear to reveal it all in one post, but itâs been waaaay too long since we got any hints from you. Are there any other WOY S3-related facts you could describe in much greater detail? The campaign could do with more motivation.
Non-WOY fans: Are you convinced? Need I remind you whatâs in the end tag of the âlastâ episode of WOY? You know thereâs much more to life than tales from the land of Ooo, a blue middle school cat boy in a world of unusual individuals, adolescent twins in an Oregon town filled with oddities, a half-gem half-human protagonist, a coming-of-age princess of Mewni, a trio of ursine trend-followers in San Francisco, and all that jazz. If youâre not one bit interested in Haterâs origin story and all that was planned for S3, itâs your loss.
Pessimists: Will you please dispense with this unnerving âWander is deadâ talk? As a certain Popeye would say, âThatâs all I can stands, I canât stands no more!â Youâre not trying to let the Disney bosses win, are you? You probably used to think previously canceled shows like Hey Arnold!, Samurai Jack, and Young Justice could never be brought back. The point is, all is not lost.
@peepsqueak and WOY fans/SaveWOY supporters: Have I been of assistance? Almost every remark Iâve ever made shows wit and perception. I mean, just think. Wander is still stuck in that vault where his goal of reforming Lord Hater remains incomplete, and he has no idea of what threat awaits him. He says, âGlorn, help us.â Itâll take something big and extraordinary to convince every Disney fan (and perhaps every Netflix fan) to talk some sense into the higher-ups. Not to mention the replacement/back-up voice actors weâll have to find if Disney takes even longer (we already lost one - RenĂ© Auberjonois). We shanât rest until we get the answers!

#OK I KNOW WANDA PAINTED THIS I JUST KNOW SHE DID #WHY DID THEY CUT THIS THUIS SO FUNNY #MCSM #also the steve placeholder.. bro im telling u.. they keep confirming my lore #it keeps Happening #Many Thoughts Head Full. #ok but the fact its Just Fred raises many questions like binta knew about xara and rom but they arent considered on the same level as fred #even though the three of them created the universe together... so is it just like the three divided communities rewriting their own religio #steve here is very likely just a placeholder like hes been in concept art before but like... i have no doubt in my mind soren would be here #i stand by my fucking lore to the grave that the first ever steve avatars were the first builders and soren was a part of them #and thats THAT. on THAT. period.
@b0xâ TO BORROW A PHRASE, YOUR THIRD EYE IS NOT ONLY OPEN BUT SHOOTING DEADLY LASERS (I HOPE ITS OK TO TAG YOU/SHOW YOUR TAGS AHHGHHDFHGDFHGK) IâD LOVE TO HEAR MORE ABOUT YOUR LORE?!?!? N AS AN OFFERING I WOULD LIKE TO EXTEND MY OWN THOTS ON THESE FUNKY LITTLE CUBES
(related to my ideas on classes and worlds)
SO steve n alex do factor in to my mcsm au but they werenât the first humans (or humans at all for that matter but. thats another post)- those would indeed be the old builders (tho i also like to call them âmoderators/modsâ bc, ha ha admins and mods... n i kind of like the idea of referring to them collectively as the moderation bc none of them have ANY impulse control except maybe soren and otto once every century or so.)
i think the admins took on (at the very least) three âprotegesâ among them and we meet most in game. iâll be naming the groups by the time-honoured convention of âshared flawed mindset that bites them in the tushieâ.
âWHO NEEDS HEALTHY COPING MECHANISMS WHEN YOU HAVE GODLIKE POWERS? IF IâM HAVING FUN EVERYONE ELSE SHOULD BE TOO!â: mevia, hadrian, cassie rose, with romeoâs favourite probably being hadrian. all obsessed with being extra, getting what they want, and being generally choleric. i mean you couldnât just sit down and talk things out like a reasonable adult, you had to build a death mansion murder mystery complete with scooby doo style killersona? you couldnât just keep your games fun and balanced, you HAD to turn it into a minecraft hunger games where no one is there by choice just so you can be amused by the struggles of people you dont see as people? you couldnât just offer a good enough reward to entice jesse to come to your icy palace of doom willingly, you had to trash their town and then threaten their entire world?? guys, please go to therapy. please.
"I KNOW THIS SITUATION ISNâT RIGHT BUT I NEED WAIT UNTIL I CAN BE SURE IâM MAKING THE BEST AND FAIREST DECISION I- OOPS THERE GOES MY WINDOW OF OPPORTUNITY TO ACT. WELP, TIME TO TRIP AND SPILL ALL MY TICTACSâ: otto, soren, (binta?? i have no canon justification for this one but making it make sense is,,, another post ghklfHGLKD). as it seems that the old builders all have (or had until it got stolen/destroyed) an enchanted flint and steel, soren having had one would explain his books being in almost every other world the gang visits (including, notably, fredâs keep in the underneath..). though it doesnât explain why sorenâs ended up in a random loot chest. (at least, canon doesnât- i have som hcs about why soren wouldnât want to draw the adminâs attention to himself, n using a flint and steel would definitely do that- so in this case it was probably ivorâs crowbrain going âooo, shiny artifact! might as well steal that too for when iâm done with this whole command block stuff.â)
âIâM ABOUT TO GO ABSOLUTELY OFF THE SHITS AND YOU CANâT STOP ME. MAY MY PATRON SAINT MUMBO JUMBO BE WITH ME TODAY, BECAUSE THIS MAY OR MAY NOT GO HORRIBLY WRONG. FOR SCIENCE!!!â: harper, isa, (yeah i dont really know who could be the third one in canon- idt ellegaard was an old builder- so this ones a big ole ???), with harper being xaraâs favourite. admittedly iâm not sure about isa, sheâs only really here because of the eversource- but considering the only others who mention those are the old builders, well... wrt isaâs lack of old builder powers, i think that xaraâs old builders liked to try doing things that had never been done before (or any visionary-aligned individuals, really,, hence the name ghklfdhglkd). for harper that was building pokemon red in minecraft pama, and for isa that was renouncing her old builder powers so as to live amongst her people like one of them (tho this was more of a social experiment).
finally, the purpose of the old builders (DELVING STRAIGHT INTO HC TERRITORY HERE)- in addition to having beings to interact with other than the villagers- were to be sort of microcosms of what romeo is/was to the mcsm universe as operator/op, but for individual worlds (bc the admins arenât going to be in all of them at once, even if they can inhabit multiple bodies). the role of the operator is to be the creator and catalyst, to keep the universe/server running, to introduce new factors into it so that it can grow and become something better than it was before. (this also means that romeo literally cannot die/be killed, bc the universe is dependent on his existence.)
itâs not that worlds canât take care of themselves, but in the event of potentially catastrophic threats emerging, itâd be good to have someone with admin powers lite to step in and stop things before things escalated n potentially spread to other worlds- tho only as a very very very last resort, bc otherwise how are u gonna farm champions?
anyhow this post is getting. pretty loNG so, on a last note- my stance on canon lore (esp mcsm lore, or what little of it there is) is that theyâre more guidelines than actual rules so iâll admit some of my au (new game +) does just yeet canon, tho i tried to keep the absolute wildest shit out of this post. again, iâd be SUPER interested in hearing more about your own takes on the lore/plot/literally any aspect of this game?!?!?! my hyperfixation level has been at 418% for the past few months and it hasnt gone down and i am. s o thirsty for content... i hoPE IT WASNâT PRESUMPTUOUS OF ME TO MAKE THIS POST N ALSO THAT UR HAVING A GOOD DAY/NIGHT/PERIOD OF THE 24-HOUR CYCLE WE BASE OUR LIVES UPON AAAAAAA

#mcsm#minecraft story mode#msg#F for cassie rose im so sorry there werent enough poses in the original meme bas#e

5, 10, 19?
Aaay! Thank you so much!! @dreamcrow
5. Whatâs a crackship you love?
As a crack ship gfdkgsd oh man, my heart is set on Blinky/Strickler on that one ahaha. I already adore whatever dynamics they have together on screen - or even when referencing one another!! And honestly I think theyâd make great friends!! Heck they could bond on Roman pennies, and mechanical engineering (seeing as Blinky helped build Jimâs Vespa, and Strickler made a super accurate replica of Merlinâs amulet) and donâe get me started on the quick witted beautiful back and forth theyâd have
Once tried writing a Good Omens AU with all this in mind, but never quite had the energy to finish it. Letâs face is the two of them have great Aziraphale / Crowley energy haha Â
10. Mutual pining or enemies to friends to lovers?
Oh man oh man, mutual pining. It leaves so much potential open!! Heck even the enemies to friends to lovers could happen within the umbrella of mutual pining (especially if one of the two isnât ready to admit to their pining -wink- )Â
That and Iâm just a sucker for two people being so equally into one another but just, not quite having the confidence to learn how the other feels. Itâs so juicy and can be played oh so deliciously in so many fun ways!
19. Whatâs your favorite character head canon?
Weeeell thereâs certainly one HC Iâve been hinting at for quite some time and have been meaning to make a proper post about - but here is what Iâd like to call the Meat and Potatoes (super lean edition) of the Etruscan Strickler HC ăœ(oâĄo)/
(please keep in mind Iâm not a qualified historian, or anthropologist, or archeologist - but an avid lover of history )
So the Etruscans and the peoples of Etruria have been around for a loooong time, in fact there are some who believe the Etruscan language is one of the building blocks of many italic languages. And for a good amount of centuries they thrived!Â
Then Rome happened, which was perhaps inevitable seeing as they were on the same peninsula - and because of that the size of Etruria changed depending on which century map youâre looking at. And although at some point Etruria spanned from Umbria to just grazing into the region of Lazio - its biggest consistent chunk existed in what we know today as modern Tuscany.
Because of this I should perhaps make it clear that I believe Strickler came out through the fetch after 32BCE during the already decline of the Etruscan language (in which Etruria is already absorbed and occupied by the Roman Empire). In fact by then only a select few, unless they were Etruscan, knew the language Marcus Terentius Varro for example, the Roman Emperor Claudius (though he probably learned it from his first wife, Plautia Urgulanilla who is believed to be Etruscan).
Now I hear what youâre probably thinking: But his/ his familiarâs name is Waltolomew Strickler? Thatâs not very Latin sounding for a name.Â
 And youâre absolutely right!
However, Etruscans (despite occupation and absorption into the Roman Empire - and more so before) were known to be seafaring, trade was very important from Egypt to what we know today as the Greek islands and to the northern coast. Import and export was important and (as well as fighting pirates, but thatâs a very fun wiki rabbit hole to fall through another time haha), and with trade comes awesome exposure to other cultures and other peoples from that culture!Â
Case in point the vague similarities and non similarities between certain deities between the Roman Greek and Etruscan Pantheon! Of course each pantheon has its own variants and deities that donât exist in another pantheon, as well as different takes on certain heroes i.e the Greek Heracles, and the Etruscan Hercle -which through a lot of found art, is perceived to be a very popular hero for a number of reasons.Â
I could also go into the account of Etruscan soothsayers being well praised even by Cicero - but thatâs another rabbit hole for another time - as well as a reason I like to indulge in the fact that Strickler can come across as rather superstitious at times!Â
But Iâm getting off topic XP TRADE weâre talking about trade, and it was important be it Egypt to the BalkansÂ
And with that in mind it isnât impossible for a Northern Germanic man to fall in love with an Etruscan woman. Â
1) women were treated far better in Etruria, as opposed to Rome and Athens. In fact Romans thought they were more promiscuous because of how freely and equally they were treated.Â
 2) Germanic tribes treated their woman on a similar level of equality.Â
 3)  As a culture of partnership, heck we are still discovering more and more about the Etruscans but we can make educated guesses through their sarcophagus covers (the reclining lovers and so on). This celebration of life lived even in the face of death.Â
Very on brand Strickler imo, and if we from history can see how they treated marriage in death we can assume how marriage was treated in life. As loving and equal as possible. In short Strickler grew up with that respecting women juice (at least compared to Roman and Athenian standards)Â
So name wise, Waltolomew Strickler can come from the Norther Fatherâs name. Vel for short, as names beginning with âwâ arenât very common in Latin, Etruscan, or Italian. In fact if you go to Italy today and introduce yourself as idk, William -  thereâs a good chance theyâll pronounce William as [Vee-lee-am].Â
However in Latin the use of âvâ often replaces the âwâ and âuâ sounds. u = v and a double u = vv (aaay get it?) And just like that a VValtolomevv is named haha
Enter the name Vel slowly over time becoming Walt over time. I could go on for paragraphs, but I know I explained the whole congnomen thing in Terpsichore, Iâd have to re-check and I fear this is already gettingâŠahâŠcrazy long so Iâll try and wrap it up ^^ââ
Initially the real Waltolomew was supposed to be left in the woods to die at the mercy of nature because it didnât look like the infant wouldnât survive anyways, but when they went back to check in the woods to find who we know as Strickler the host family Strickler saw it nothing short than an auspicious miracle of the gods, or that their child managed to strike a deal with Vanth (a death god), thereâs a lot of theories between the family members to try and explain how Walterâs survival is possible - but all the same Waltolomew is raised in a rather loving family! Â
Thereâs the quiet and slightly distant Northern Father (who is occasionally homesick) and mainly tends to the olive grove. The Mother that settles the finances. The Uncle that runs shipptrades and sells the family olive oil. And, of course, The Grandmother who is very proud of living Etruria thank you very much, openly mocking romans, quick with an opinion, morally gray, with a sparkle of mischief - and someone who pretty much elbowed her way into the very serious child Waltolomewâs heart in such a way the changeling wasnât sure if she knew his secret or even cared!Â
Eventually Roman payments became too steep, the Northern Father racked up a bit of debt and was sent into the armyâŠthe Northern Father never returns presumed dead in action. The resentment of Romans grows even more in the Strickler household because of this.Â
Which is one of the reasons why later in life Stricklander chooses to occasionally pass as âBritishâ aka one of the peoples the Romans couldnât occupy and conquer, as opposed to siding with a people who absorbed the population of his home peninsula that would later be known as Italy.
In fact I believe after being forced to work at Hadrianâs wall (which was a laughable failure, although as a Cesare Hadrian was well praised), and returning to find his host family home repossessed by Romans Walter would flee to Gaul (another location where Romans couldnât conquer).
It wouldnât be long until the Romans called on a 13 œ year old Waltolomew to enter into the military just in time for the Hadrianâs Wall debacle. Where Waltolomew grows a respect for the peoples of the British isles for being able to hold off Rome for so long and so much. Afterwards he returns to the peninsula to find his home repossessed by Romans, his grandmother having passed, and his mother and uncle closer to the port and not doing so hot. This spurns Stricklerâs dislike for Romans more, an incident occurs, and Waltolomew flees to Gaul (another area famous for being able to hold off the Romans), but this time to join the Gumm-GummsÂ
More on that another time cause ooo boy this is a long response XP Iâm sorry this got so out of hand!!Â
I wanted to add my thoughts as to why and how I came to the conclusion of this HC but like I said this response is crazy long already so Iâll keep it short (for now) to: That classic âRoman Nose profileâ of his, the pale olive skin tone, the vague roman/greek helmet he has in his office, how his Italian VA did not do an English accent in the dub, and - uh, well, I like the idea of it haha
Oh! And hereâs a picture of a supermarket outside of Sarteano named âEtruscoâ Look at that lil face! It probably doesnât mean much, but it does spark joy haha

Thank you so much for your questions!! I deeply appreciate it!!â„(ËâŁËÔ
)Â
#oooff this one got a bit long haha I hope it makes sense!!#Nico Responds#Tales of Arcadia#Walter Strickler#Stricklander#Blinky#Blinkous Galadrigal#fan fic ask

[ 365 Days of SasuHina || Day Two Hundred Twelve: Bowl of ___ ] [ Uchiha Sasuke, Hyƫga Hinata ] [ SasuHina ] [ Verse: To Rule Them All ] [ AO3 Link ]
While most in his regiment would call something like this boring...itâs one of Sasukeâs favorite parts of the day.
Being the appointed knight of royalty - especially a princess - is typically seen more as a chore than anything else. But Sasukeâs family, in its long line tied to the crown, has maintained its post as protector of the royal line for generations. Itâs a role heâs honored to have.
Doubly so when one considers it was never meant to be his position with an elder brother, but...Fate has its inclinations. So here he stands, rather than Itachi. His frail, oft-ill elder brother simple isnât suited for the tasks a knight must carry out. So instead, he sits on the council where his mind can be of more use.
And that leaves Sasuke as the princessâ constant protector. Thereâs rarely a moment (unless improper) where they are not together. Though at first it was rather stiff and awkward...the two quickly discovered shared traits, and have become fast friends. For a time, he convinced himself it was much like having a sister. His mother only ever had her two boys, and nearly all of his cousins are male. Having someone his age of the feminine variety was...an interesting change of pace.
But...that inclination has been dying a slow death.
This morning, theyâre going about one of Hinataâs favorite routines. Strolling through the gardens her mother so dearly loved, the pair meander mostly in silence. Sheâs conveyed to him how much she enjoys this place, what with its connection to her mother in her memories. The late queen had a fervid love of flowers, and that same love blossomed early on in her eldest daughter. Though it has its somber tinges, the garden is still her most favored place.
The soft whispers of her gown are a stark contrast to the occasional clink and clatter of his armor. Though heâs often been told a full set is not necessary while on the castle grounds - surely she would be safe there - he doesnât want to take any risks. It may be warm, and a bit heavy...but heâd rather endure that than be caught by surprise. He is both her sword, and her shield. His plating is her first defense should someone wish her harm.
This he considers silently as they slowly tread the pathways between the plants. It really is a beautiful place...his mother keeps a garden in their manor, but of course, it holds no candles to a royal courtyard. The smell of flowers is almost overwhelming, birdsong and the chuckle of a brook filling the air.
âHere...weâll sit for a time.â
Snapped from his thoughts, Sasuke comes to a stop as Hinata rests herself atop a stone bench. Before them is a patch of open grass, and he then realizes what the bowl in her hand is for. Within is a mix of seeds and grains, which she carefully tosses atop the green.
It takes mere moments for several of the songbirds to swoop in to feast, scratching and pecking among the emerald blades. Still standing, Sasuke idly rests a hand atop the hilt of his sword, watching them quietly. His brother has a raven heâs tamed and taught to speak...birds can be quite the little mysteries. Many in his clan also practice falconry. Perhaps he should give it a tryâŠ
âWould you like to try it?â
Blinking at the echoed thought, Sasuke looks to his ward as she holds out the bowl. Ah...she means feeding the birds. Glancing to his plated hands, he takes a moment to remove the gloves before carefully accepting the bowl of seed. Doing his best to mimic her, he tosses a handful.
Fluttering at the sudden movement, several of them take off, startling him a bit.
Beside him, Hinata laughs softly into a hand. âGently! Youâll frighten them otherwise. HereâŠâ Standing, she has him scoop another handful, then - with her own guiding him - helps him carefully lob the kernels. The remaining avians donât spook, and after a moment, several more return to partake.
âSee?â
âHnâŠâ Sasuke hands her back the bowl. âI suppose âdelicateâ and âcarefulâ arenât my foremost skills.â
Thereâs a small, wry smile. âIâd imagine not. Swordplay may take a kind of...finesse, but maybe not this kind.â
Her teasing earns a small smile of his own.. âI think Iâd best leave that to you, my lady. Youâre more the sort for the dainty and graceful.â
At his words, for a moment, her expression falters. Though Hinata recovers quickly, Sasuke misses nothing.
â...did I say something wrongâŠ?â
â...no.â She turns back to face the songbirds, quiet for a time. â...I suppose thereâs no escaping such a reputation, is thereâŠ?â
âMy lady, I donât mean -â
âI know...what you mean.â A quiet sigh escapes her. â...itâs to be expected. And perhaps, in s-some ways...I donât mind it. I am a lady. I am to be prim and proper. I am to be grace and beauty and demurity. Just as you are to be strength and pride and honor. But donât you ever wish to be...more than thatâŠ?â
Feeling a bit unsure what she means, Sasuke doesnât answer. More than what a knight entailsâŠ? But itâs been his training since birth, his familyâs tradition. Just as hers is to rule. Is she...unhappy in her lot? â...what more would you like to beâŠ?â
Itâs her turn to pause, to think. â...respected. Taken seriously. I am not just a pretty face, and a womb to bear an heir. I am a mind and thoughts and opinionsâŠ! Yet I am told they do not matter...because I am a woman. So I keep them, in silenceâŠâ Head lowering for a moment, she then looks to him, expression unreadable. â...except when I am with you.â
That takes him aback.
â...I feel as though you see me differently. We are...friends, you and I. You listen to me. You heeded my request to keep suitors at bay, to let me keep my freedom for just a little longer. I thought, perhaps...you took my independence seriously.â
âOf course I do. IâŠâ He heaves a curt sigh, hand running back through dark locks. â...my mother is a force to be reckoned with. Stern, and haughty, and unyielding. Even my father, the kingâs general, knows better than to test her. But...thatâs not so with everyone. When I was young, she instilled a thought in me that a woman can do all she wants, just as a man can. Reality...was not quite so kind. Though I may not have the power to change that, I still carry that notion with me.â A pause, and a huff of a laugh. â...Mother would box my ears otherwise.â
In spite of herself, Hinata gives a small smile. â...I would very much like to meet your mother.â
âAnd she would feel likewise, Iâm sure. But, HinataâŠâ He drops her title, the pair of them alone and the subject serious. âYou are more than beauty and the heirâs mother-to-be. You will be queen someday. And I hope that...whoever becomes your king will see you as I do. You are kind, but so too are you resilient. You are thoughtful, but so too are you wise. Your courtesy need not be seen as weakness, nor your manners not as obedience. Iâve not known you for as long as it would likely take to know your mind half as well as Iâd like...but I think it - and your heart - are just as worthy of consideration as any man.â
Beholding him with widened eyes, Hinataâs pale cheeks alight ever so softly pink before she glances modestly aside. â...thank you,â she murmurs. â...I was right to put my trust in you. And...I a-apologize for questioning it. You meant no harm.â
âI take no offense, my lady.â Replacing his gloves, he thinks as the pair lapse into silence. â...would youâŠ?â
âHm?â
âWellâŠâ He pauses, thinking. â...I doubt something like swordplay could be learned without notice...but would you like me to teach you something...else? Archery, perhaps? Just to give you another skill. One beyond those expected of you.â
Her eyes brighten. â...you would...do that?â
âIf itâs what you wish. You need only a bracer to protect your arm - it would take little to do so in secret compared to many other arts I know.â
âI...I would love to!â
âThen itâs settled. Iâll find a good beginnerâs bow...and weâll find a way to get you a practice target, out of sight.â He gives her a sly grin. â...then weâll see how dainty you are when you pin some stuffy politicianâs feathered hat to the wall behind him, hm? That should change their tunes.â
At that, she laughs out loud. âYou give me terrible ideas, SasukeâŠ!â
âI canât bring myself to apologize for them.â
                              .oOo.
More of the royalty AU! Haven't gotten to do this one in a while, it's a nice change of pace~ In all honesty, I could have taken this MANY different ways, but...this popped into my head and wouldn't leave!    Poor Hinata just wants to be viewed as a person...and thankfully her knight knows a thing or two about respecting women (thank you Mikoto, lol). A few secret archery lessons should be fun... :3c    Anywho, iiit's late, I need sleep! Thanks for reading~

FusionFall Retro 2019 Holiday Event Fic: Icy Imagery, pt. 1
A long, tired sigh escaped the womanâs lips as she collapsed onto her assigned cot. Â It was a nightmare: Fuseâs army had pushed deep within the Ice Kingdom, chasing away many of its denizensâwith one of which, the Ice King himself, making a new home in the south side of Pokey Oaks until Finn, Jake, and the Fusion Fighters sent with them could regain his territory. Â Now, not only had he erected a giant spire of ice in place of his castle right in the middle of the neighborhood, but a swarm of penguin-like fusion monsters and ice titans had followed him there. Â The mounting problems required a full evacuation.
On top of everything, it was little wonder to some why so many fusion monsters tracked the Ice King down. Normally, when Fuse conquered an area, that was that: He was too confident in his own power to worry about whether or not regular civilians escaped, too self-assured that all of Earth would inevitably fall under his domain. Â If Fuse was after the Ice King, it was because he considered him a genuine threat. Â
There was some debate over how much Imaginary Energy the wizard could wield, and rumors that he used to be some kind of genius.  Silya didnât know about all of that, but he certainly wasnât⊠normal.  Perfectly mad, a trait she could actually admireâso long as he didnât hurt anyone.  Really though, he was also kind of a nuisance.  As many Fusion Fighters had come to his aid, fortifying the spire and working together to protect him until he could go back to the Ice Kingdom, he was treating all of them like hired help.  Even two fusions had shown upâone of himself and one version of a penguin he called âGunterââand he wasnât taking that seriously!  Without a doubt, this mission went high on the long list of aggravating jobs sheâd taken since joining the war.
âWenk!â
Oh yeah, and apparently, Iâm a penguin mom now⊠ Silya wiped at her face before glancing toward the wide, dark eyes that meet her own peridot ones.  The tiny bird flopped on its side by her on the cot, blinking with myopic innocence. He was her ârewardâ from the Ice King: One of many passed out to the soldiers for guarding his penguins.  Honestly though, she practically already had thirty-six kids the way her nanos behaved.  She didnât need one more.
âWenk!â the penguin curled up closer to her side. Â Had it imprinted on her? Â A part of her hoped not. Â Although, a part of her hated herself more for already growing attached to the small fry.
Her wristcom buzzed to life. Pulling back her sleeve, she only barely recognized the number and answered it all too late by the time she realized who the call was from. Â Before she could cut it off, the Ice Kingâs face appeared as a small hologram. Â âHey, there! Â Finally, somebody picks up! Do you have any idea how many calls Iâve made today just trying to get anyone? Â A lot, thatâs how many.â
Silya hid back her frayed nerves with a small, awkward grin, but her voice still came out somewhat bitter, âWhat do you need, Ice King?â
If he noticed, he didnât show it. Â Really, he just seemed glad that she didnât immediately hang upâno doubt like many others had first. âSo yeah! Â A few guys told me about this âImaginary Energyâ stuff and how you use it to beat those goop monstersâlike, it comes from you, but you still need weapons? Â They tried explaining, but it just sounds like none of you actually know what youâre doing to me. If itâs anything like magic though, I figuredâI donât knowâmaybe I could give some pointers tomorrow. Â Iâve been calling to see whoâs interested and your boss mentioned you and some other people. Anyway, you in?â
It took her a moment to make sense of his mess of words. Â The second after though, she was shaking her head and cursing the operationâs commander. âWhat? Noâ! No thank you, Ice King,â she grunted, sitting up. Â Her penguin flopped into her lap immediately after. Â Was this really happening? Â What was happening right now? Â âI donât think you know how complicated Imaginary Energy is. Â Itâs not as simple as magic: Thereâs a science to it. Â We use our tech as a means of drawing it out and manipulating it around us in a stable form, as a protective measure and to enhance our weapons.â
Was she really having to explain this? Â To him, of all people? Â There were scientists that could go into more detail than Silya could with more patience than she had to spare. Â Sure, he had ice powers, but that was only thanks to his crown. Â What made him think that he knew anything about Imaginary Energyâwhich, apparently, heâd only just heard about in the first place?
âLook, I can pass you over to someone at Dexlabs or Mandark Industries. Â They can explain it better,â she offered. Â She didnât want to just brush him off, but this was one headache she wanted to avoid. Â âBesides, you shouldnât be wandering around. Fusion You is stillââ
Ice King cut her off before she could say anything else, his hands on his hips, âI donât need to listen to a bunch of nerds! Â And who ever said magic was simple? Â Iâll have you know I worked hard to master a lot of my moves.â
âTheyâre just not the same, alright?â
âAlright then, smarty-pants, well, if you know so much, then I guess you can tell me what an imagination zone is, right? Â Huh? Â Huh?â Â His eyebrows seem to rise with every emphasized word and he pressed his face closer to the screen, the hologram distorting in reaction.
She stared at him, bewildered. Â She didnât answer him: No, that was news to her. There were people that could create miniature worlds thanks to Imaginary Energy: It was a rare phenomenon though, caused by people with insanely high amounts of IE who inevitably never could describe just how they did it. Â The way the wizard talked about it, however, it almost sounded common. Â Maybe it was an Ooo thing. Â
Her silence only encouraged him and the smile returned to his face, âSee? Â I know my stuff! Â You could learn something! Â Iâm not promising anything, but it could be fun. Â Weâll be like the guys that hang out in those kung-fu movies. Â Iâll bring snacks!â Her eyes widened as he leaned back to look at a long list that came into the transmitterâs view. Â How many people was he calling over this?! Â âIâll go ahead and put you down as a âyes.â Â Weâre meeting a little ways up the spire around noon, and donât be late, ok? Â Bye!â
Silya couldnât get another word in before he hung up on her. As the hologram evaporated, she stared at the screen a second longer and then held her head in her hands in exasperation. Â The penguin rolled off her lap and sat up next to her, watching and then mimicking her. Â
Technically, she didnât have to go.  Her next shift to guard the Ice King wasnât for a few more days and she was just one face in a crowd of thousands: Heâd forget her in a heartbeat and pester somebody else.  He could act like such a doofus that she wasnât even afraid of what he was capable of if she upset him.  Still, she didnât not like him and, if she was honest, he actually made a few good points.  She worked for Dexter and the boy genius was absolutely against the magical arts, meaning that she was rarely exposed to more than Imaginary Energyâs scientific elements.  Little was known about IE as it was.  And she wanted to understand it more than anything⊠ If the Ice King knew somethingâby some insane piece of luckâthen maybe she should give him a chance.
âWenkâŠâ The woman glanced down as her penguin wrapped one of its wings over her arm and cuddled up against her.  It seemed sleepy, but content to be by her side.  She patted it lightly on the head with her free hand, still deep within her own thoughts.
Maybe it wouldnât hurt to hear him out, she mused, Itâs just for one afternoon. Â Any bit of new information she could learn would be worth dealing with his madness for that long. Â Â

Scary Mask
I.
I donât know what to say when people come apart
The road is long, the road is dark
And these are just the words to somebody elseâs song
Before I get into it, Iâd like to quickly note that this is not best post to start with. Same goes for the one on âMe Laughing.â My older posts are much friendlier reads and not nearly as dense.
Okay, letâs go.
At first I thought âScary Maskâ was straightforward, i.e. Poppy uses her persona (âI wear my scary maskâ) as a defense when she finds herself in uncomfortable situations (âwhen Iâm afraid I donât belongâ). âWell that was anticlimactic.â Indeed. But, of course, this is Poppy we are talking about, and nothing with Poppy is quite so simple.
The problem with basic interpretations that sum up a song with single sentence is that such readings miss all the nuances of the work, i.e., they leave out all the fun little twists in the lyrics, the double-meanings in the lines, etc. Basically, simplistic interpretations of lyrics ignore all the poetry, which is part of what allows music to transcend language. Poetic lyrics also provide us with new pieces of language so that we can better understand the increasingly complex world around us. Nestled in the gaps between our definitions lies the inexpressible that only poetry can render sensible.
Well-written (read: poetic) lyrics are part of what allows songs to completely baffle us; they allow songs to elude simple characterization and slip the shackles of obsessive categorization (e.g., genre). A truly great piece of music leaves us speechless; we cannot simply explain it to someone. Instead, the best we can do is say, âyou know what? Just listen to this,â to which they are only able to reply, âwow⊠youâre right.â
This is why I love metaphors and dualities. Yes, I realize the previous sentence just caused every person who hated English in school to audibly cringe. Look, Iâve been there, I get it. I used to think English was a cruel joke played at everyoneâs expense and that it was stupid because âthere is no right answer.â Then one day, all of that changed. Almost as though a switch was suddenly flicked âonâ in my brain. It wasnât until I understood English that I finally appreciated it. Iâve never wanted to go back, so hear me out.
Metaphors are essentially a way of controlling the associations formed by your brain when you read or hear a word. They can make you associate simple pieces of language with something extraordinary, and make you see things in a way you would never have previously considered.
If youâd like to get fancy, you can start introducing dualities; that is, setting two concepts on opposing ends of a spectrum. When you do so, you allow the reader to consider new and (seemingly) impossible gradations, all born from the struggle between two relatively ordinary ideas.
Take, for example, Poppyâs âpoetry-ecstasyâ duality that she introduced in âX.â This was the first thing that made me take a more serious look at her work, i.e., âI think something else is going on hereâŠâ We know poetry and ecstasy are meant to be diametrically opposed in âXâ because the colors in the music video change in sync with Poppyâs delivery.
If YouTube subtitles werenât broken, they would read: âpoetry, poetry, poetryâ
Likewise: âecstasy, ecstasy, ecstasyâ
Itâs not obvious that poetry is the opposite of ecstasy unless youâre in Wonderland in which case, you messed up somewhere. Moving on, when you set two concepts against each other like that, you introduce a new interplay between the two ideas. Now the audience is forced to see things from a new perspective, one they would not have otherwise considered. Or, they just ignore it, as is usually the case, but I digress.
With all this in mind, further study into âScary Maskâ reveals that some parts of the more basic reading donât quite add up. Take, for example, lines like, âM-A-S-K, am I okay?â or âYou ainât gonna see me tonightâ; these lines refuse to fit neatly into the obvious interpretation e.g., why spell out âmaskâ? Why are [they] not going to see âyouâ âtonight?â Most people would choose to ignore these outliers or simply shrug and go about their day. If this postâs existence didnât clue you in, we wonât be doing much âshruggingâ or âignoring.â
Youâve probably noticed this already, but I try to forge readings of Poppyâs work that fit as many different pieces as possible into them. To craft interpretations that capture the interplay between all the elements in a song. Often, this requires approaching the song from multiple angles, some even being right. If this post is good, each interpretation should form its own colored shard of glass, leaving the reader with a beautiful explanative mosaic. If this post is bad, grab a broom and wear shoes for a week.
Hilariously, doing justice to the more abstract bits of art usually means I have to use figurative language to explain other figurative language. âSounds meta.â Indeed. Some puzzles can only be done justice with other puzzles, which is also why my writing frequently dips into obscurity. Close reading yields wonders, but means interpreting âcarefullyâ and âopenly.â âSounds like a lot of work.â It is, but anybody can come up with a vague idea of what a song is âabout,â e.g., âthis oneâs about love!â How insightful, you should post that on Genius, thatâs just what theyâre looking for. I mean, really, at that point what are you even getting out of the song? A few minutes of pleasure before you move onto the next one? Is that it? Are you going to just spend your entire life constantly devouring one helping after another, waiting hungrily for your favorite artists to dish up your next meal?
I may be going to hell, but at least I wonât be stuck doing that.
II.
Rise and shineâ
get out of bed!
Take my hand,Â
thereâs darkness ahead.
âScary Maskâ is one of Poppyâs best songs. No, Iâm not interested in arguing about this. It is also one of Poppyâs most important songs. This, however, I am interested in arguing about.
For the sake of the following discussion, I will be ignoring most of Poppyâs singles. âMetalâ and âImmature Coutureâ and [other singles] are good but they complicate things and I donât have time to deal with them, despite having the time to tell you how little time I have. Fancy people would probably call such exclusions âexceptionally non-rigorous,â but Iâm over it.
I tried to make this section not-boring, dunno if I was successful; my writing takes on the flavor of whoever I read last, hence why the âMe Laughingâ post reads like schizophrenia. Lately, Iâve been feeling especially masochistic, so Iâve been reading [redacted]. Expect that to shine through.
Letâs zoom out for a bit: âScary Maskâ is the flagship song of Poppyâs Choke EP, though I am sympathetic to arguments for âMeat.â âScary Maskâ ties the whole EP together and makes it possible. Itâs critical to Chokeâs âflow.â This isnât a given, Iâll explain/pretend to explain.
The structure of Choke almost perfectly mimics that of a five-act play. Yeah, like that Shakespeare guy. The EP contains exposition, rising action, a climax, falling action, and a conclusion. The methodically squeezing âChokeâ sets the mood and introduces a problem statement to color the rest of the EP. With its pendulum-like bassline and hypnotizing array of voices, âVoicemailâ depicts a forsaken mind becoming further and further dissociated from reality. A complete breakdown occurs in âScary Mask,â the explosive climax of the EP and, at least so far, Poppy's work. Following âScary Maskâ comes the bleak and gruesome âMeat,â which is clearly akin to the falling action. And finally, we are given âThe Holy Mountain,â the EPâs pessimistic and wistful send-off.
As for the context in which âScary Maskâ was created, Choke comes after two pop-y records, Bubblebath and poppy.computer, and a half-pop, half-??? disc, Am I A Girl. After AIAG, Poppy had a choice: back off and return to pop or double-down and bring on the metal. Thankfully, she chose the latter and made Choke. Letâs all take a minute to praise AIAG for even allowing Poppy such options, for flowing together so smoothly, etc. Okay, sĂ©ance over, letâs return: âScary Maskâ carried Choke, without it, the EP wouldâve been severely lacking a massive, stand-out song to serve as the EPâs creative apex.
âScary Maskâ is, in a sense, the âno turning backâ point for Poppy. Producing âScary Maskâ was like Poppy locking her old style away and throwing out the key; âXâ and âPlay Destroyâ were #wild, but âScary Maskâ was the third strike. Put confusingly, âScary Maskâ was Poppyâs âhome runâ while also being the âfinal nail in the coffinâ and other idioms. The track is so far removed from the days of Bubblebath and P.C that it actually created a distance, a gap, between nu-Poppy and Pop-y. âXâ has pop elements and Poppy cutely âooo-ingâ; it was walk back-able. âScary Maskâ has Jason Butler demonically screaming and saying the âfuckâ word; fine print says âno refunds.â Or, if youâd prefer analogies that are unlikely to age well: think of a giant iceberg breaking off from the main Arctic glacier and slipping into the cold, dark sea. Once itâs off, itâs not freezing back on. In other words, once Poppy dropped âScary Mask,â âprincess with a pistolâ became âdemonic metal queen.â
Iâll also argue that âScary Maskâ is the least compromising song in Poppyâs current discography. Itâs her truest expression of self pre-I Disagree. All artists have to make their music listenable-enough to get bread, just like I need to make my writing readable-enough to get read. Unfortunately, compromise is inevitable, but artists can still create good music. Itâs just hard and getting harder. Plus, nobody agrees what âgood musicâ even means because we have no rigorous definition for art soâ
When an artist decides to really âgo for it,â to make no compromises, and does it well, a beautiful thing happens. Thatâs what âScary Maskâ is for Poppy; she decided to pull no punches, and the result was, well, âScary Mask.â
âXâ and âPlay Destroyâ were both successful, but they didnât guarantee Poppyâs nu-success. âPlay Destroyâ had Grimes, and âXâ could have been an anomaly. If Poppy went back to pop, fans could have passed off her dip into metal as âweirdâ but âkinda coolâ and that would be that. However, Poppy didnât let upââScary Maskâ proved she could consistently make quality metal tracks, and now weâre here and Poppy is about to destroy the world or something. Nice.
In summary: âScary Maskâ functions to transition Poppyâs sound, it does a damn good job of it, and Iâm definitely looking forward to her new album.
III.
You try to take the best of me
Go away
You try to take the best of me
Go away
Alright, zoom back in. Yes, âScary Maskâ made it possible for Poppy to throw in crazy distorted guitars and for everyone to love it, but it does more than that. âScary Maskâ also transitions Poppy her(?)self, which sounds strange but it will make sense later, probably.
Now time for the fun part.
Sometimes I like to begin my analysis with a song's verses before circling back to the chorus, as was the case with "The Holy Mountain," however, "Scary Mask" is so crazy that it doesn't even matter where I start. It's what I lovingly refer to as âstraight-up bonkers,â like some twisted monstrosity tearing its face off as it stumbles around in the dark. Reminds me of the psychos from Borderlands, an analogy that already has not aged well. Basically, âScary Maskâ is all over the place, so I might as well start from the âbeginning.â I'm going to have to pick up the pieces and stitch them into some monster that would do Mary Shelley proud anyway.
Let's dive in.
Poppy opens the song with: âI wear my scary mask when I'm afraid I don't belong.â Okay, seems pretty straightforward so far. There isnât much to work with here, but maybe we can add some color to this line. BUILD series conducted a relatively listenable interview with Poppy earlier this year. One excerpt to note:
Interview: âWell, why wear a mask?â
Poppy: âSometimes you just have two faces.â
Interview: âAnd thatâs okay?â
Poppy: âOnly sometimes.â
This is why I was debating just skipping âScary Maskââthe opening line was a little clichĂ©, and it seemed like Poppy had taken Batman Forever literally, neither of which are particularly good signs. However, I want to stress that lacking an interesting message wouldnât necessarily make âScary Maskâ a âbadâ song. This idea may seem very strange, especially in modern society where it appears everyone agrees that deep themes=good art. Weâve been raised with the notion that the best art is art that tells a message, and itâs difficult for us to consider otherwise. However, not only does the conception of âdepthâ quickly fall apart (as I noted in the âMe Laughingâ post), but itâs entirely possible that thematic elements have absolutely zero bearing on the aesthetic quality of a work. In other words, âthemesâ may not be what make art âgood.â
Yeah, take a minute and think about that.
Anywho, after deciding I could afford to pay attention, I found many interesting things. Note Poppyâs word-choice. She uses the word âscary,â an almost child-like characterization of something fearful. Indeed, in the music video, Poppyâs hair is hidden or pulled back, giving her a youthful appearance. Look, pictures:
Moreover, peppered throughout the song are Poppyâs pouty squeals and she sings with call an almost âwhimper-yâ tone, the end of her words marked by a spike in pitch. Obviously, weâd like to ask: why is she presenting herself to us this way?
We find answers in the second half of the line: âwhen Iâm afraid I donât belong.â Okay, so when she finds herself in situations where she is uncomfortable, where she is struck by the feeling of being small, almost child-like, she resorts to the mask as a defense mechanism. Now weâre getting somewhere, though I would like to ask: why is the mask âscaryâ?
Being two-faced does not necessarily mean the one face has to resemble Harvey Dent post-toasting, it could simply be a different side of your personality. Perhaps the next line will help:
You canât read my brain until itâs off
Note Poppy says âbrainâ instead of any other word such as âmindâ or âthoughts.â Using the word âbrainâ signals a sense of invasiveness. Think: Sylar from Heroes cutting open peoplesâ skulls and studying their brains for secrets. Iâm sure many obsessive fans have tried digging up details on Poppyâs personal life and many interviewers have tried asking her inappropriate questions. It appears that Poppy wears a âscary maskâ as a counter to such intrusions, as if she decided that the only appropriate response to these inappropriate behaviors was a face-to-face with the scary mask.
Holy shit, was this entire song written as a response to the AMP Radio interview? That would be hilarious.
Poppy then repeats that the mask is ânot coming off.â Hey, wait a minuteâŠ
Okay, so after a fairly badass guitar interlude, Poppy begins feverishly chanting the lines: âI'm never gonna take it off, so don't touch me / Never gonna take it off, stop looking at me.â Iâm sure some fans hate me because Iâm always banging the drum that Poppyâs work is about obsession, and thus, appear to be attacking them, but come on, how clear would you like the message to be? Go watch âRepeat After Meâ if youâre not convinced.
Anyway, in a sense, Poppyâs scary mask (read: freaky persona) operates as a shield from foreign bodies who seek to violate her personal space.
Iâm going to leave Jason Butlerâs lines for the end because, well, youâll see.
IV.
In the music video for âScary Mask,â after Poppy first puts the mask on and has a little breakdown, there are many instances where she is no longer wearing the mask, but is still acting like a possessed teen in desperate need of exorcizing. This is weird, here are some possibilities:
1) Poppy takes the mask off in the music video because sheâs pretty and people want to see her lip-syncing.
2) The mask was always on.
Weâre going with door #2.
Letâs look at some of the weirder lines, like Poppy chanting the incantation: âM-A-S-K, am I okay?â By spelling out âmask,â Poppy signifies that the âam I okay?â question is directly referencing the mask she wears. In other words: is it okay for Poppy to wear a mask?
We already know Poppy came down pretty hard on one side of the fence when she answered âsometimesâ in the BUILD series interview. My equally unambiguous answer is: âit depends.â There are many reasons why wearing a âmaskâ is a terrible thing that slowly renders you psychologically âfucked,â go read TLP or Lasch if you want more info on that (actually, you should just read them anyway). However, weâve already established âScary Maskâ was an empowering song for Poppy because it served as a truer artistic outlet for her, so any masquerading should be approached with this in mind.
Alright, so when is it a good thing to wear a mask? How can it be a good thing to pretend to be someone youâre not?
Well, when youâre an artist, you typically create art to express something. Often, this âsomethingâ is deeply personal to yourself. You put a lot of yourself into your work. This means criticism of your work can really hurt. After all, if someone calls your [song/painting/writing] âtrash,â itâs like calling you âtrash.â It feels like that criticism is aimed directly at that piece of yourself you put into your work. Yeah, that sucks. Sometimes itâs so difficult to bear that you avoid creating anything so you donât have to be faced with such attacks. You forgo creating art because the injurious potential of criticism is too daunting. Without a creative outlet, your feelings remain bottled inside, slowly eating away at you from within. Itâs a lose-lose game and everyoneâs the player.
So, you ask: âwhat do I do?â
Well, thatâs where the mask comes in.
The artist can use a persona to get around these problems. In other words, putting on a mask can actually allow you to finally be yourself, which seems paradoxical, but Iâll explain.
Take, for example, me. After reading enough of the silly words I write, you may start to form a picture of me in your head. To speculate and fantasize about what I actually look like or how I actually act. Without even knowing your thoughts, I can assure you that any such conceptions are completely inaccurate. I know that Iâm not actually as [adjective] as you imagine me to be because I work with a protective persona. The persona allows me to write without worrying too much harsh criticism. Hence, with a persona, I can safely express myself through my work.
The same is true for Poppy. As Iâve noted in previous posts, Poppy has a lot to say about the world. She would like to express these messages artistically, but itâs not always easy to face criticism of her work (and Poppy gets a lot of hate). By adopting the âPoppyâ persona, Poppy is able to safely express herself. To finally say what she wants to say. To be who she really wants to be. And when she is faced with scathing criticism, she is able to continue her work undeterred because it feels like the criticism is directed toward Poppy (persona) instead of Poppy (person).
An alternate (and hilarious) reading of the lines âM-A-S-K, am I okay?â and âIâm alright, Iâm alright, Iâm alrightâ would be to imagine them as part of a demented question-and-answer period with Poppy. Many of her fans have expressed concerns over the effects of living your life pretending to be a [robot/alien/demonic angel], not to mention the section of Poppyâs fan-base who seem to constantly worry about Poppy being Titanicâs so-called âpuppetâ and that he is abusive towards her. You can interpret Jason Butler screaming âIâm alright, Iâm alright, Iâm alrightâ as Poppyâs response to such concerns. Seems like an appropriate answer to me.
V.
You try to take the best of me
GO AWAY
YOU TRY TO TAKE THE BEST OF ME
GO AWAY
YOU TRY TO TAKE THE BEST OF ME
GO AWAY
There are some remarkably odd lines in âScary Maskâ that need some serious groundwork to render sensible, so letâs switch gears for a second and complain about pop music. Yes, I know. Itâs not exactly brave (let alone novel) to decry pop music as a vapid and soulless caricature of art, but I find it therapeutic. Plus, Iâm clearly writing a narrative here. If these words make you indignant, first ask yourself âwhy?â and then relax. I listen to pop music too, most of which is terrible. Also, Iâm talking about the correlation, not the rule. If you fight me with exceptions, Iâll hit you back with trends.
Pop is the most apologetic music genre out there (though mumble rap and country are giving it a run for its money, literally); pop musicâs main purpose is stated by its terminology: it exists to be popular. To be as widely palatable as possible so as to garner as many listeners as possible. The implications associated with a genre revolving entirely around popularity for the sake of commercial success are pretty disgusting. Iâd even go so far as to say the existence of âpopâ as a musical genre is a strong indicator that culture is no longer treated as an essential component to human society, but is instead only another industry, and has been for a while. People love celebrating the façade or appearance of culture (partially so they can consider themselves âculturedâ), but the truth is that culture now exists mainly as a commodity to be endlessly repackaged and sold back to people under the guise of âart.â âI blame capitalism!â Sure, and you may not even be wrong, but thatâs a discussion for another time. The point here is that to successfully create music with value, music that isnât just a meaningless product, one needs to escape such a hyper-commoditized regime i.e., the corporatized pop-music industry.
Business-wise, Poppy did this by ditching Mad Decent and signing with Sumerian Records, an independent label which will hopefully make her very happy. Music-wise, she also had to transition. Recall: putting on the mask (read: persona) allowed Poppy to be herself and make the music she wanted to. So, to evolve her music, she had to also evolve the mask. After releasing two and a half pop records, people will generally expect, well, more pop. People donât like when their favorite artists abruptly change, probably because they donât wish to face the idea that said artists were never making music for them in the first place. Either way, for Poppy to tell tales of an impending apocalypse or drop an insane metal album like I Disagree, she had to ease fans into it. Musically, this is the second half of AIAG and the entirety of Choke, but itâs also a perfect encapsulation of âScary Mask.â Itâs possible that the bipolar nature of songs like âX,â âConcrete,â and âScary Maskâ is only due to Poppy trying to transition her sound without upsetting too many fans. Hence why these songs incorporate lighter sections to balance out the darkness. Perhaps âI Disagreeâ is as dark as Poppyâs going to get, but given recent news of her hanging out with Nadya Tolokno from Pussy Riot, I doubt it (âdonât know how long until they see the rest of meâ).
This is also where Poppyâs YouTube videos come in. While producing new music, she can quickly put out a few videos and slowly ramp up the darkness, facilitating a comfortable change in artistic tone for the fans. Something, something, frogs and hot water.
Considering all of the above, I agree with something @thatpoppyuk said a while back in regards to people saying âMoriah is coming out!â when Poppy dyed her bangs:
Not only is it potentially insensitive to call Poppy âMoriah,â itâs simply inaccurate. For better or worse, people donât regress, they progress. Poppy is not doing something so #basic as âreturning to her roots,â she is becoming who sheâs always wanted to be.
VI.
Now that we have completed the necessary groundwork, we are able finish off the rest of the song. Lyrically, âScary Maskâ is rather focused; weâve actually covered all of Poppyâs lines, so Iâd like to examine the role Jason Butler from Fever 333 plays in the song.
Iâve actually refrained from gushing about how good âScary Maskâ is until now, but I donât think I can contain myself any longer. Fever 333 was an excellent feature that perfectly meshes with Poppyâs harmonics and the chomping guitar riffs. Not only that, but lyrically, Jason Butler brings an insane performance. He brings scary mask to life.
Fever 333âs role in the song is complicated and will take multiple approaches to flesh out. First, consider the scary mask (Jason Butlerâs lines) as an entity speaking for Poppy, as though it were some demonic hype-man:
This would then explain the line, âwell you heard the woman, so fucking look away.â It appears that Poppy needs someone telling others to âfucking look away,â betraying a sense of dependency. After all, if Poppy could handle such onlookers on her own, she wouldnât need someone else telling them to âbeat it.â We may interpret this as a sign that Poppy has come to rely on the shielding-nature of the mask. She relies on her persona for protection, but reliance gives way to over-reliance. Naturally, substitution and dependency follow.
However, this isnât wholly satisfying, nor is it very charitable. Letâs consider another, more empowering, approach, this time as Poppy speaking through the mask. In this case, a synthesis is underway between Poppy and her new persona (read: scary mask). During the violent transformation, she screams and struggles as the darkness of the mask washes through her, until the process is complete and both are one. Or, rather, Poppy is transcending her persona through her persona, a process of metamorphic self-realization.
Approaching the relationship between Poppy and the mask as a symbiotic one will perhaps explain one of the most bizarre lines in all of Poppyâs discography (minus every line in âVoicemail,â of course): âYou ainât gonna see me tonight!â I mean, what the hell. Itâs difficult to explain how much this line confuses me, words simply elude me. This is one of those lines that normal people would shrug and come up with a half-hearted explanation such as: âwell, Poppy is wearing a mask, and because she is wearing a mask, you arenât going to see her. You know, because sheâs wearing a mask.â Poorly-conceived explanations such as these negate the whole point of studying art. You canât just jerk responsibility when âthe going gets tough.â The reward isnât merely the end result, and people who believe this are the exact same people who Genius exploits. It is the work, the method, the climb, the struggle that is important because it is while grappling with the piece that one learns the most about oneself. With that being said, this line has haunted me for three weeks now, but I think I can do it some justice.
First, we examine the context in which the line appears in the song. The line first appears near the beginning of the song, wedged between a crushing guitar interlude and the Poppyâs staccato-ed âM-A-S-K, am I okay?â build-up. Then the line comes again at the end of Jason Butlerâs insane post-chorus breakdown which is interlaced with Poppyâs disembodied screams. This second appearance follows a punchy chorus from Poppy and directly precedes a charged guitar solo and Poppyâs explosive final meltdown. From all this, we notice that âYou ainât gonna see me tonight!â is always delivered amidst a great deal of turmoil, always sprinkled into the middle of a violent episode.
Next, we look at the line itself. âAinâtâ and âgonnaâ are very colloquial, like the speaker hasnât been taught to speak âproperlyâ or has lapsed into a state where they are unable to or simply do not care. Iâm also picking up a touch of mentally-disturbed giddiness, as if some deranged killer is frothily barking this at you outside your window while his head jerks around. âWell, Iâm definitely glad not to live on the ground-floor.â Likewise.
I must comment, however, that âTonightâ is an odd word choice. âWell, maybe they just needed a word that rhymed with âalrightâ?â Remember what I said about giving up when things get difficult? No, âtonightâ relates a sense of shadowy immediacy, like a doom drawing near. Perhaps Poppy is about to descend upon the world, shrouding it in darkness with her black angel wings.
Hence, âYou ainât gonna see me tonightâ relates the sense of foreboding violence that comes with Poppyâs new persona. This makes a lot of sense in the context of Poppyâs work because I Disagree is likely going to be her most aggressive album yet. See, for instance, âI Disagree.â
Basically: full dark, no stars; Poppyâs out for blood, time to take cover.
VII.
In summary: the âscary maskâ is a protective garment for Poppy as well as an empowering one. The adoption of an artistic persona allows her to cope with criticisms and continue her work. Recently, she has adjusted her work, and thus, her persona, to something truer to herself, and âScary Maskâ was an integral part of her transition.
Well, wasnât that fun? I know I enjoyed myself.
Wait, what? You have a question? Ah, waitâI know what youâre thinking:
âIf Poppy only wears her âscary maskâ when sheâs âafraid she wonât belong,â then why is she ânever going to take it offâ?â
Well, maybe she feels like she will never belong.
