what's your favorite thing to do when you have free time? (and a villain isn't attacking)

my favorite thing to do? huh. havent gotten any free time lately, so im not entirely sure. i like to invent...but that one was obvious. um, i write sometimes. i like to listen to my music while i do that. but that's typical of me, really. if your looking for a hobby of mine you WOULDN'T entirely expect... ...well, i like to bake, if that counts.

Theoretically I enjoy living with people but unfortunately when you tell people you're a neuroatypical raccoon with twelve ongoing hobbies, completely random work hours, and a series of admittedly unusual lifelong compulsions they tend to hear that and go "oh haha you're trying to be Quirky okay" and then save their ten million questions and concerns for when you can't run away

I think everyone needs to have a go at a new hobby every once in a while because:

1. You might find something you enjoy

2. You gain more respect for those who can do said hobby

3. You remind yourself what it actually feels like to not know anything about a subject

Caleb: [distractedly] Rarely. It’s the benefit of an all-plasma diet. Hunting expends more energy than anything else.

Helena: Is that why Lilith always threatens to rip our heads off if we interrupt her beauty sleep?

Caleb: Oh, she barely needs a reason to make threats. What’s keeping you awake?

Helena: Why didn’t you stop me from feeding on that man. You could’ve gotten in my head and told me not to.

Caleb: I can’t be your conscience, Helena. That sort of willpower has to come from within.

Helena: [mutters dejectedly] You say that like it’s easy.

Caleb: Of course it isn’t easy. But it is possible.

Helena: I nearly killed him. She wanted me to go all the way and I almost did.

Caleb: You restrained yourself in the end.

Helena: Only to sit back and watch her finish the job!

Caleb: You’re hardly alone in that regard.

Helena: She tried to push you too?

Caleb: [meditatively] There’s no such thing as a good vampire. You’ll make mistakes, which is why you shouldn't strive to be perfect, just better. The point of no return is to stop believing you can be better.

Helena: I need to understand her — and why you stay with her. Caleb, where did all this begin? I tried to ask how she became a vampire, but she only told me to talk to you.

Caleb: [cagily] I’m not sure it’s my story to tell.

Helena: But she never will, and doesn’t it involve you as much as her?

Caleb: [after a moment’s silence] Focus on my thoughts.

Helena: I’m still not very good at this.

Caleb: Come closer. Physical touch strengthens the bond. Relax, Helena. Close your eyes. Let me show you.

I love being higher than the clouds hovering over the valley and seeing them slowly make their way towards me without changing altitude, and suddenly bump their noses into trees. A disconcerting moment in a cloud’s life. What is the ground doing here I thought I was in the sky

Odd question, but since they're both dogs and I imagine smell is important to them, what do Machete and Vasco smell like?

Smells are indeed important to them. I think their sense of smell is definitely more keen than ours but not nearly as extreme as that of real dogs. It would be kind of world/society/behavior breaking if one of their senses was that much above what we as humans can even imagine.

Fur absorbs smells more efficiently than skin, so the environment each person spends most of their time in affects the way they smell (the same way your clothes tend to hold scents from the places you've recently been to).

Machete tends to smell mainly of frankincense, the primary ingredient of the sacred incense burned during worship. Smells are hard to describe but to me frankincense smells sweet, smoky, earthy, citrusy, piney, resinous and woody. Evokes the feeling of sanctity. There's also traces of ink, paper and old books. If he had been treated recently and you got really close and knew to look for it, you might be able to detect the cuts where he was bled.

Vasco uses perfumes skillfully, his favorites contain iris root and damask rose. The mellow scent of his high quality soaps often lingers for quite a while as well. If he's been outdoors, there's a more noticeable hint of leather, as well as moisture, earth, greenery, animals and various other nature smells. Since he's characterized by his vitality, I can't escape the feeling that if you were to put your nose on him, he'd smell like a warm, healthy, living thing even more strongly than people usually do, even if you didn't consciously realize it.

Proud to say I’m at a place where I’m very ambitious w my goals, but still very content w where I currently am. No matter my financial or academic or just any personal aspirations at all, I’m so in love w my life as it is and realize that it will be no objectively better when I do attain all the tangible things I want to attain.
