Can you rank the parents of shatter me series? From best to worst. Please?
This is such a fun question. Let's go!
✨Best to Worst.✨ I'll only list the parents who have made an appearance. Lena might have a Dad, but we don't know that, so let's keep it simple. And this is just my opinion, feel free to pitch in your two cents if you have stuff to add or dispute.
(This got quite long, so I'll add a keep reading.)
I think the best parent of the Supremes is Castillo. (Nicolás and Valentina's father). We know barely anything about this man except that ✨he's from Argentina.✨ However, the reason I'm putting him on top is because Valentina is trans and considering how good of a transition she seem to have, he's definitely supportive. If he didn't like her being trans he probably could have wiped her brain over and over, erasing her identity; but he didn't! Gold star!
Next up is Omondi. (Stephan's father.) He's just here. We don't know anything about him. I guess he sent Stephan to England to receive an education, which is really weird because there are plenty of options in Africa that would also result in an English accent. (cough, Mafi why did you even have to do that??, cough). Thanks for coming Omondi. This is the point where we descend into the bad parents.
Third is Tatiana Mishkina. (Lena's mother.) Abuse-wise, she doesn't seem that bad. Lena has a scar on her leg, but we don't know where she got it. We don't hear anything about Lena's home life except that Tatiana and Anderson wanted Warner and Lena to get together. When they broke up I assumed she got upset because Lena was upset. The reason she's third is because she allows her daughter to be openly transphobic and that's not cool. You'd think she'd try to stay on good terms with Castillo, but she doesn't seem to care.
Now here's the thing. I was pending between putting Max and Muza third worst. Because in a way, Max revoked his parental rights as soon as Ella was sent away. After that his daughters became experiments. I don't think he sees himself as a parent anymore. Emma and Ella become tools for Evie, and he's there to support Evie. Muza on the other hand, is still actively raising his children, and that's almost worse in my mind. Like, if you're going to call yourself a parent, you need to step up. You have all the resources of Asia at your disposal, how is your son suicidal?! In the end I decide that Muza is better, because he at least cares for the (physical, not emotional) well-being of his children. He wants Nazeera and Haider to be returned safely to him. (Surely to wipe their minds afterward, but it's for their own good you know.) Then he shoots Nazeera's plane out of the sky, but you know she can fly so she was fine...! 😄
Max. I don't care if she killed your wife, you don't offer to pimp out your daughter, MAX.
Second to worst is Paris Anderson. I had to keep reminding myself that my fanfics aren't real. That, in canon, he was ready to drop a bomb on James, he beat the crap out of Adam as a child and he did, and does, all kinds of things to Warner. However, in a strange way, he believes what he's doing is what's best for Warner. He wants him to become a strong, ruthless leader that will rule the world once he steps down. He wants to see Warner have a life, succeed, and goes quite the lengths to assure his survival; unlike our last point on this list.
✨Evie Sommers. ✨ She created a pair of daughters for the sole purpose of using them to take over the world. They are tools to her, and they're not permitted to have control over their own lives. She turned Emma into a jellyfish. She let approved the plan of letting Anderson lock up Ella into an asylum. Then she tortured her. She even let them have a normal life beforehand, with pancakes, bikes and strawberry picking, which is almost worse imo! If you're going to do science on your kids, do it the Stranger Things way.
And that's all of them! I hope you enjoyed :)
Thank you so much for the ask~!

i was wondering if you could share some of your favourite wlw/sapphic ships? i really enjoy your queer content in general and so id love to hear some of your takes on sapphic subtext etc :)) hope you’re doing well!
Hello anon! It’s 2AM and I should be asleep but instead I’m going to answer this ask. Partially because I tend to be perpetually behind on messages / asks (shout out to everyone I have yet to answer, I am so sorry), both because I’m often busy and incapable of brevity. I do not want that to happen to you, so here I go!
Thank you for the kind words 🥺 I appreciate you wanting to know my thoughts and enjoying my content!
Here are some wlw/sapphic ships I love!!
• Carol/Maria from Captain Marvel. As far as I am concerned, they are canonically wives. It’s not subtle! I wrote a meta thread about how the themes of the movie are enhanced if you read it as a story about Carol as a gay woman. Also, every time I remember that “Kiss Me Deadly” is the song they sing together in karaoke, I freak the fuck out. I firmly feel like Stevebucky and Carolmaria are the 2 greatest love stories of the MCU movies and it’s astonishing how similar they are, too. I’ll never forgive the Marvel fandom for sidelining Maria in favorite of shipping Carol/Valkyrie because of insidious colorism. I wrote a mini fic about Maria feeling insecure when Carol meets Valkyrie to work out my frustrations about that too!
• Nomi / Amanita from Sense8. (In all ways but physical, Amanita is MY wife, actually.) I feel like they’re one of the coolest, healthiest, and most badass relationships on screen :’) They make me so fucking happy and I will never get over how ride or die they are for each other.
• Andy / Quynh from The Old Guard. I am crossing ALL of my fingers that they expand on them in the sequel, because I felt there was very strong subtext (that was barely subtext) there, and as far as I know they were together in the comics. Big shout out to Andy wearing Quynh’s necklace, for example. (I’d need to rewatch the movie to get lost back in the sauce and discuss them more because it’s been awhile)
• I have ships from Black Sails that I enjoy discussing in depth, but those are spoilers! (I tend to only talk Black Sails spoilers on @freedom-in-the-dark or my side twitter gaypiracy)
• This is fairly new, but I am eyeballing Katy / Xialing from Shang-Chi. There was subtext there too, I feel. Katy definitely seemed to have a crush on Xialing, and there was tension in the moment when Xialing saved her. I’m hoping they expand on that dynamic in future movies!
• I never finished this show (even though I meant to), but Cosima / Delphine in Orphan Black were near and dear to my heart a long time ago, so I can’t not mention them. It’s been a very long time since I’ve thought about them but they were a big deal.
• In the “fuck the CW” category: YEARS ago, back when I watched Arrow, Nyssa/Sara was extremely important to me. I adored them, and then of course they killed Sara (and later forced Nyssa to fake marry Oliver). I was also into Lexa/Clarke from The 100 during that era—because who wasn’t, though I didn’t love them as a ship as strongly as many people did—and we all know where that went.
That’s it for main ones, I think. Sorry if that disappoints! I’m especially sorry that I don’t have much meta to offer, unfortunately, simply because most of what I’m mentioning is either explicit canon so it didn’t involve subtext hunting or I watched it before I got super involved in media analysis. I’m planning on watching Killing Eve when it’s complete as long as it sticks the landing, and I know that show is going to eat my brain hahaha. Some of my friends are super into it and have sent me a couple clips here and there and I’ve unintentionally written meta off the cuff and they lose their shit. I’m looking forward to devouring it eventually.
As for ones I’m just sort of casually into... I never finished Legend of Korra (not yet anyway), but I loved and appreciated Korrasami because again, who doesn’t. Similarly, I could get behind Kate Bishop / America Chavez in my Young Avengers days, and Peggy / Angie from Agent Carter. From very far away, I salute the Supergirl fandom, because I know Kara/Lena would make me foam at the mouth if I was at all into watching it and I’m rooting for those crazy kids.
My last humble offerings...
Movie recs:
Portrait of a Lady On Fire (which I know most people have seen by now), though warning that it’s very bittersweet or sad. Please, PLEASE watch Colette if you have not; that movie is very important to me, and it is both sapphic and gender. Likewise, please watch Professor Marston and the Wonder Women, which is based on a true story and involves an m/f/f polyamorous relationship.
Niche fic recs because people deserve to read these:
Sharon/Natasha fic that is vastly underrated and I love it, and Eleven/Max fic from Stranger Things that lives rent free in my brain. (I think Will/Mike is endgame in that show and the parallels between Will and Eleven do make me wonder if they’ll make her gay too.) These are literally the only fics for either of these ships I have ever read. And of course, this genderbent f/f 1950s Johnlock case fic which will kick your ass. You’re welcome in advance.
Thank you again for asking! 💜

top 5 movies you can always rewatch and why?
Ooh excellent question, thank you!!
In no particular order, and not very coherent because my brain is mush this week :)
Aliens - pretty much a perfect film :) Ultraviolence, fantastic action and creature work, THE BEST character writing and cast chemistry, insanely quotable (it IS the only way to be sure) and just the sheer freaking joy of watching Ripley work through her trauma by said ultraviolence. And adopting a small feral child. And a bona fide Battle Couple Trope, with Hicks being absolute hearteyes for her taking charge and saving everyone. (Yes it has to be the Special Edition, and nope, we don’t talk about the sequels mangling the entire narrative arc dammit.)
Terminator - Baby newbie director James Cameron turning a really freaky fever dream into a swoony doomed quotable time travel romance! With ultraviolence :) And the character work that goes into making Sarah feel like a real person, complete with a pet iguana called Pugsley. The post-apocalyptic horror, the police station scene and the factory finale??? And don’t even get me started on Michael Biehn because I might start crying again... (no we don’t talk about the sequels for this one either, idek).
Fury Road - I mean??? Does this even need an explanation? Cinematic perfection - the casting, the direction, the characters, the sound mixing, the EDITING. The social commentary. SO MUCH EXCELLENT ULTRAVIOLENCE. Max and his reluctant heroics. Furiosa!!! The WIVES. THE VULVALINI. I may or may not have seen this in the cinema fourteen times the year it came out. THE SHEER DAMN CATHARSIS OF IT ALL. Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy playing characters with such an excellent battle couple trope THAT THEIR STUNT DOUBLES FELL IN LOVE AND GOT MARRIED IRL.
Dredd - My ultraviolent happy place :) It’s just a sleek, gorgeously simple, cathartic narrative with the most beautiful camerawork capturing horrible things, and some fabulous characters. That’s all you need. Karl Urban and Olivia Thirlby giving it their absolute all. LENA HEADY. I don’t even have words for how brilliant she is; the amount of quiet pathos this very loud violent film lends its characters between all the many, many bullets flying all over the place. And best of all... no damn sequels :)
Amelie - My what’s app profile picture may quite possibly be me sitting in the cafe in Montmartre surrounded by Amelie paraphernalia, grinning like a very happy idiot?? It takes quirky to whole new levels of twee, it’s visually inventive and so funny and warm and sweet and snarky, and I think I may have hyperventilated when I saw the director do a q&a in person?? And the MUSIC and the COLOURS and Audrey Tatou and Matthieu Kassovitz?? That goddamn ghost train scene wrecks me every time. I may possibly be very fussy about which set of English subtitles they use for this one, because I have the original DVD ones memorised, and the literal translation ones on TV make no sense in context. I love this film so much. Times ARE hard for dreamers, it’s true.
Thank you for the ask!! I’m sorry this is completely incoherent lol!!
#anon ask#this is completely rambling i'm so sorry#stringing words together is not my forte this week#so it's very capslock shouty#i'm so impressed i actually managed to finish it though

Off Broad Street Players Get Peachy with James and the Giant Peach at the Levoy Theater in Millville, NJ
By Ricky Young-Howze
Tonight at the Levoy Theatre was totally the pits and that was a great thing because Off Broadstreet Players was showing off their latest All Kids Production of James and the Giant Peach Jr. This adaptation of Roald Dahl’s work had words and music by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul and book by Timothy Allen McDonald and was directed by Tyler Daddario. Be prepared for a theater spectacular that you’ll want to take a great big bite out of!
Thanks to the help of a mysterious man and his bug buddies James sets sail on the ocean in a giant peach to escape his aunts who are only looking to strike it rich.
Direction by Tyler Daddario tugged right at my heartstrings by filling the stage with the most talented kids in South Jersey. Now you guys know I’m a huge fan of puppets. So I have to really applaud his use of Bunraku (performers visible with their puppets) early in show only to have the puppets turn into costume characters as they “grew”. I also love his use light and shadow (which also isn’t surprising because he’s the lighting designer) and creative fog. Kudos to him for also wrangling so many kids onstage which he did so adeptly with assistance by Lauren Fazenbaker and Student director Jared Deshields.
If I said everything I really felt about these wonderful actors we’d be here for eighty days so let’s go through them in rapid fire!
James (played by Drew Terista) had such a natural energy onstage I haven’t seen in adult actors! He’s just gotta keep this up and if he does I’ll be leaving the nursing home in ninety years to review his millionth performance.
There are some performances you have to stop and watch because if you blink they’re gone. Ladahlord (played by Gian Verderose) was such a delight to watch! Here one moment and then running off in a flash right before your eyes! Btw he looks amazing in a dress!
Ladybug (played by Lena Dougherty) really stole the show! She ruled that stage with poise and panache! I can’t wait to see what she does in the future.
Grasshopper (played by Kurt Sparks) caught me by surprise with his splendid rendition of “Floating Along”. I didn’t expect that kind of performance from someone who looks like such a regular joe! There’s nothing regular about him.
Spider (played by Olivia Johnson) had no right making me cry so much with that voice and talking about her dead fiancé. I’m telling you no right (sniffle)! Seriously does she have a side job cutting onions?!? Truly a touching performance and a voice far more seasoned than her years.
Earthworm (played by Ayden Horsman) was a sleeper hit! Sometimes I would just look at him to see what the heck he was doing. He really baited me (ha!) with a great performance!
Centipede (played by Aidan Bradley) was brash and bold! It was nice to see him bringing that blue collar gruffness to the stage! Even with the short amount of time onstage you could really see him develop the character.
Spiker and Sponge (played by Brooklyn Richmond and Lauryn Sheppard respectively) made me laugh out loud. Their ability to commit larceny to a beat really inspired me. Richmond as Sponge has a singing voice that drew me into the songs and Sheppard as Spike stoke the stage as nimbly as she copped a purse.
I’m not going to kid you. Normally I pick out two kids from the ensemble to highlight here but I’ve been racking my brain trying to pick two great kids out of this amazing cast! I can’t! I surrender. This ensemble of amazing kids finally broke me and all earned a spot as my Background Standouts. There you go. I hope you’re happy!
In all seriousness each kid brought an energy and dedication to the show that makes me really excited to see what they do in the future. THIS is why you support theatre by young artists!
And a big get well soon to Scott Magee who would have been playing Bobby Bobby-Cop if he wasn’t sick with the flu! Best wishes for a speedy recovery.
Dana and I have a favorite saying “loud and bad is better than good and quiet”. Musical Director Aimee Ferenz has the gall to make sure they were both loud AND good! Young voices are some of the hardest things to coax into the rafters and she did it! This is her first time at the Levoy and I desperately beg that it not be her last!
Choreography by Katie Kiessling with assistance by Lindsay Nakai had tumbling and Fosse and jazz and just a little bit of everything! (Squee!) They totally maxed out their quota of jazz hands and high kicks.
Set Designer Mary Boner must be really tired of wood grain and orange after this show. But her work along with construction by Tom Kiessling, John Daddario and Wayne Wriggins really paid off. I especially loved that giant peach set! You have to go see it.
Props by Cara May were as simple as period suitcases to as complex as money with Director Tyler Daddario’s face on it raining down from the sky! This play has so many great props that seem so fun to build! May’s work is so fun to see onstage!
I knew costume designer Shaun Laurencio was on the scene the minute I saw the dresses of Spiker and Sponge. Only a Laurencio original is such a visual slap to the face that really shows you the grotesqueness of the characters. You saw this all over the stage on every character! Even with assistance by Tressie Neuber this must have been a massive undertaking! A special shoutout to Tressie for cutting her teeth with one of the toughest designers out there.
It seems lately that wherever I go hair and makeup design by John Rattacasa follows me (or the other way around). I’m going to wake up one day and find him putting wigs on my cats. Seriously this guy gets to do so many shows because he works hard and takes his stuff seriously! I especially loved his wigs on some of the ensemble they were like fabulous Easter Eggs! And Ladybug’s wig was especially intricate, interesting, and worked perfectly with the character.
It’s really hard to highlight great sound design because if it’s good you barely notice it. So I give a great kudos to design by Sean Pedrick for all of the microphone problems that I didn’t hear because they didn’t exist! Great job!
I keep telling people that all the theater training and big budgets in the world can’t substitute for a great cast having a great time. If they have fun and love what they do then so do we. This cast had me rolling in the aisles because they had fun themselves. You have to come see this show!

Lair review for @dreamslayer-fr (Thank you) This one was super hard I like a lot of your dragons
Lena gets the honor of going first. She’s so eye-catching!! That blue and purple works so well, and the accent from the collar work well with her smoke. I can’t believe she’s a gen 1, to be honest, because she just seems like something you’d have to spend months or years breeding to get this perfect
Aster is so fashionable! From his gold etched jewelry like design (so intricate!) to the dress he’s wearing, to the mask and feathery wings, he’s so well put together that I’m in actual awe. He should be illegal for being this pretty
Annalee is another so pretty it hurts dragon. But she’s brighter, so much brighter. Her wings seem to actually flicker with the lights they have on them. And all the silks make her that much more elegant. She seems like she’d be poised and collected and able to reduce people to tears with a single raised eyebrow. Which? Honestly? Is complete goals.
Arlen is next. I’m not sure why I’m drawn to him but I’m gonna blame it on his jaguar + okapi They just look good together. Now they I get this close up, I can actually see him better, and the chest guard + eyeliner makes him look like something out of Mad Max. You have a lot of tough-looking dragons and I love it.
(Black and yellow plays in the distance) Another bright dragon! I love how you paired her accent with yellow wings. I feel like a lot of times people would choose a different color so it would stand out more, but this way she looks so much more god-like. Like the deity of the sun: kind and gentle unless those under her care are in trouble.
I clicked on Dorian because I follow someone on here who also has a Dorian whom is a wolf and my brain said to click on him. I didn’t know the wolf pelts came with wolf claws and you’ve opened me up to some new possibilities. PLUS the opal is the bomb dot com (does the youth still say that?) and i love you’ve incorporated a bunch of red elements so that it’s actually the black stands out
Soren!! Whenever I see cream-ish/pink-ish/possibly stained dragons I always look to see who the parents are. This is a Sunny and Lilah kid!! (And so’s Winnifred but I didn’t want to do both of them) I have one of Soren’s brothers, and these kiddos never fail to make me smile. I mean look at Soren. He’s gorgeous, and gorgeously dressed. You have a real eye for color and fashion (at least dragon fashion- but I’ll assume this carries on into real life)
Siani’s cream iridescent would be off-putting normally. But you have played up the tint that she has by putting green-tint items and it ends up with her look delectable. The bow on her tail hiding behind the trail of her dress is wonderful, and so is the way she’s outlined by the filigree and the accent. She’s very well defined
Josephine!! Snappers generally look older, but she looks younger than most?? Like the yellow does wonders for her. I like how you paired it up, and how the mage apparel goes with the lace. Neither one kind of distract from her necklace, and the way she tilts her head shows it off even further.
I was going to make a DJ Khaled joke here, but Khalid is too pretty for me to do that to, I love his accent. It’s so fun. He looks like an early morning sky, when the suns up but we can still see the rest of the stars, however faint. His mantle also matches his shimmer, both of them in a gradient that looks very similar to one another. Where one gradient ends the other begins, and it comes out to tie everything-even his eyes- together

High School Sanvers Science Team
Maxwell Lord is furious.
Which makes sense. He’s always furious about something.
Last year, it was that sophomore Alex Danvers had the nerve to say no to him -- a junior -- when he asked her to the junior prom.
Whatever, he’d figured. People think of her as a hopeless nerd anyway, he’d figured. Especially with her new tag-along little sister, he’d figured. She’ll just be like all the other sophomores and have to wait for their own junior prom, he’d figured.
He’d figured wrong.
As it turned out, he hadn’t been the only junior with an eye for the almost unfairly brilliant sophomore girl.
Because Alex had turned him down, and had gone to the junior prom with Maggie Sawyer.
That had been bad enough. But this year? This year, things were even worse.
This year, Maggie was a senior, Alex was a junior, and they were unmistakably that couple.
The couple that all the younger queer kids -- especially that freshman boy with the oversized collared shirts and silver stud earring -- followed around and genuinely befriended.
The couple that most of the straight cis couples were jealous of, because how could a high school relationship -- or any relationship, for that matter -- possible by that healthy? That happy?
Not that the girls didn’t have their problems.
He’d heard rumors that Sawyer’s parents had kicked her out for being gay, and even though they definitely weren’t friends, Max had to admit that the rumor made his blood boil.
He’d heard that Danvers had almost gotten suspended for breaking that Malverne kid’s nose after he kept following them around, taunting them about what team Maggie had convinced Alex to play for. He’d smirked when he heard that Danvers had broken the kid’s nose and then high-fived that Schott boy.
But those hardships?
Only seemed to make Maggie Sawyer and Alex Danvers even more legendary at Midvale High.
And that was all fine.
But this latest development?
This latest development was simply unacceptable.
“How could I not be on the A Team, Ms. M’orzz? Is there anyone in this school -- except maybe Luthor and Schott, if they’re having a good day and I’m having a bad day -- who can handle the building events as well as I can?”
Ms. M’orzz regards Max evenly, somewhat resignedly, over her glasses, over pressed-together fingertips and slightly raised eyebrows.
“Max, Science Olympiad isn’t only about technical mastery and scientific smarts. Which you undeniably have. Science Olympiad is about teamwork and generosity of spirit. Which you’re still working to develop. I have no doubt that you’ll bring home medals for us. On the B Team.”
“But Ms. M’orzz, everyone knows that the A Team is for smarter students -- “
“No, Mr. Lord. It isn’t. Both teams represent our school at the competition, and both teams -- “
“So Sawyer gets to work with Danvers on both Forensics and Astronomy?”
Ms. M’orzz smiles slightly through pursed lips. “They’ve proven throughout our in-house events to make a really great team, Mr. Lord. I have every confidence that you will shine on the B Team, just as they’ll shine on the A Team. Perhaps think of this as a leadership opportunity.”
He does shine on the B Team during the competition. He brings home silver medals in events from Boomilever to Electric Vehicle to Helicopters, and he isn’t bested by any other schools; just by Winn and Lena from his own school.
But Alex and Maggie?
They make sure the silver medalists from other high schools don’t even come close to touching their event scores.
They work seamlessly in the lab during the Forensics event.
Other teams come in with a plan to divide the work between them: who will analyze the polymers, who will dust and identify the fingerprints, who will analyze the fake blood spatters and who will take charge of the entomology component.
But Alex and Maggie come in with a deeply organic understanding of how the other thinks, what the other knows, what stresses the other out.
So Maggie reads their simulated case while Alex matches whorl patterns; Maggie takes the striker out of a frustrated Alex’s hand with a kiss to the back of her neck that pushes her goggles into her face, sending them both into a soft spate of giggling before Maggie successfully lights the Bunsen burner; and they murmur together over the polymer samples, the photographs of footprints, the descriptions of fake larvae at their false crime scene.
Together, they do what no other Sci Oly team has done -- they complete the Forensics event, the entire exam, even though it is always designed to take too much work, to be too difficult, to possibly complete within the hour they’re given.
They have no time to do anything but kiss briefly, excitedly, adrenaline coursing through their veins and their brains buzzing, as they strip off their gloves, lab coats, and goggles, hastily and efficiently -- their hands always seeming to anticipate where the others’ want to go -- packing up their forensics kit and passing it off to Winn, waiting in the hall, fresh out of his Circuits Lab event.
“How’d you do?” he asks as he takes their kit from Maggie’s hand.
“How’d you think?” Alex grins, and Winn whoops.
“Awesome, yes! Okay, I don’t have another event until twelve: I’ll take this back to the room. Astronomy’s on the third floor, room -- “
“334, I remember! Thanks, Schott!” Maggie smiles over her shoulder as she and Alex dash for the stairwell, hand in hand, for their Astronomy event, starting promptly in five minutes.
Alex knocks out the calculations while Maggie jots down all the definitions. They whisper together, in a classroom full of other astronomy nerds from across the region, all adorned in t-shirts designed by and for their different schools.
They whisper about the most effective methods of exoplanet detection and whether the question on quasars was supposed to already include knowledge of gravitational lensing or if they should scribble a brief explanation for that phenomenon in their answer, as well. (They do: never can be too thorough.)
They make a point to kiss in front of everyone at the award ceremony, when their medals are clanking together on their chests and their entire team is cheering, chanting, because they won, they won, they won, and their school gets to go to States.
They make a point of it because we should kiss the girls we wanna kiss, and they’re flush with victory and adrenaline, and god, god, do they wanna kiss each other.
They both hand the picture Winn snaps with his phone on the inside of their lockers when they get back to school on Monday.
Because if they can’t help but being amazing nerds?
Might as well be amazing nerds together: even Max Lord’s got to admit it.

Dani’s Birthday Challenge!
I’ve been hemming and hawing about whether I should post a challenge for my birthday, but I finally decided that it could be fun so I’m going for it!
My birthday is August 11.
This challenge is open to literally anyone who writes Star Trek or Supergirl (I wouldn’t say no to a moodboard, either!!).
I’m posting a list of 25 prompts to choose from! I’m looking for funny/fluffy/fun fics, but I also love me some hurt/comfort or whump (as long as it has a happy (or at least, not sad) ending!). I would also enjoy Soulmate AUs, with any variation of the trope - you can claim a soulmate AU with or without one of the prompts listed. You may write either reader inserts or pairing/non-pairing canon character fics, with the following characters in pretty much any pairing combination:
Star Trek (prefer AOS): -Leonard McCoy -Jim Kirk -Pavel Chekov -Chris Chapel -Carol Marcus -Janice Rand
Supergirl: -Alex Danvers -Maggie Sawyer -Kara Danvers -Lena Luthor -Winn Schott -Max Lord
I’ve never hosted a challenge before, so I hope that just over a month is enough time. I will definitely take late submissions, but the due date is my birthday (Aug 11).
Please send me an ask or a message to claim one of the prompts!
I’m gonna tag a bunch of you guys in this post... if you do not wish to participate, please ignore (and sorry for bugging you! <3). Thanks!!
When you post your fic, please tag it with #Dani’sBirthdayChallenge2017 And send me an ask or message to let me know that it’s up, in case the tags don’t work! Thank you!! <3
Without further ado, here are the prompts (bolded ones are still up for grabs!):

2019 Reading Challenge: What Books Did I Read Last Year?
2019 was the year I finally got myself back into reading.
It was the year I re-discovered the joys of owning a library card. The year when going to bed with a book became one of my most treasured ways to both fall asleep and practice a bit of self-care.
So when I read Candice’s 2019 reading challenge post I immediately wanted to write one for myself! I’ve never done one of these challenge summaries before, but I’ve spent the last few years becoming increasingly obsessed with adding books to my Goodreads account so it makes a lot of sense.
Besides, I’d like to write more blog posts which make me happy in 2020 – especially those I can write and publish in the same afternoon.
My 2019 reading list
Number of books you read: Thirty three.
Number of re-reads: Zero.
Number of books you stopped reading: Six. I’ve only recently decided that if I don’t engage enough with a book after fifty odd pages then I’ll stop reading. This year that meant I abandoned Jog On by Bella Mackie, The Mermaid and Mrs. Hancock by Imogen Hermes Gowar, and Seven and a Half Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle by Stuart Turton.
Genre you read the most from: A good mix of fiction and memoir. Quite a few relating to grief. A couple of travel narratives in there too – and a few crime novels!
Midnight Chicken & Other Recipes Worth Living For – Ella Risbridger
Red Snow – Will Dean
My Brilliant Friend – Elena Ferrante
A Manual for Heartache – Cathy Rentzenbrink
The Lucky Ones – Julianne Pachico
I Am, I Am, I Am: Seventeen Brushes with Death – Maggie O’Farrell
The Brief History of the Dead – Kevin Brockmeier
All The Hidden Truths – Claire Askew
Grief is the Thing with Feathers – Max Porter
Departures – Anna Hart
Everything I Never Told You – Celeste Ng
The Gloaming – Kirstie Logan
Room – Emma Donoghue
We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves – Karen Joy Fowler
The Shock of the Fall – Nathan Filer
Everything I Know About Love – Dolly Alderton
Educated – Tara Westover
This Must Be the Place – Maggie O’Farrell
The Fact of a Body: A Murder and a Memoir – Alexandria Marzano-Lesnevich
The Strange and Beautiful Sorrows of Ava Lavender – Leslye Walton
Elizabeth is Missing – Emma Healey
This Is Going to Hurt: Secret Diaries of a Junior Doctor – Adam Kay
Normal People – Sally Rooney
Traveling with Ghosts: A Memoir – Shannon Leone Fowler
Places I Stopped on the Way Home – Meg Fee
The Other Sister – Elle Croft
The Chronology of Water – Lidia Yuknavitch
The Immortalists – Chloe Benjamin
Circe – Madeline Miller
The Lido – Libby Page
A House Full of Daughters: A Memoir of Seven Generations – Juliet Nicolson
Goodbye, Vitamin – Rachel Khong
My Year of Rest and Relaxation – Ottessa Moshfegh
1. Best book you read in 2019?
It’s a tie between Educated by Tara Westover and I Am, I Am, I Am by Maggie O’Farrell.
Educated was a book I thought about constantly. Westover’s style of writing is exactly what gets my creative juices flowing, and her story of a Mormon upbringing in the Idaho mountains with survivalist parents is simply extraordinary.
I Am, I Am, I Am is similarly extraordinary, in part thanks to O’Farrell’s imaginative structure. Each chapter focuses on one of her ‘seventeen brushes with death’ but they jump around in time, gradually building up an impression of how each moment has defined and redefined her life. Plus her language is utterly gorgeous.
2. Book you were excited about & thought you were going to love more but didn’t?
My Brilliant Friend by Elena Ferrante. Even though my best friend had highly recommended it, I couldn’t see what was so compelling about the story.
Yes, the writing is lyrical and paints a good picture of Italian life in the 1950s, but that didn’t change the fact that I was completely apathetic to the progression of the girls’ lives and their relationships. It felt like the same idea spooled out multiple times: Lena wished for Lila’s approval in various situations and either got it or didn’t, and meanwhile various boys appeared on the scene (all of whom fell for Lila immediately).
I pushed through for a good 200 pages without any real desire to keep reading, then skimmed through the final 50 pages with no more enthusiasm than I’d had for the rest of the book.
3. Most surprising (in a good way or bad way) book you read?
In a good way: Everything I Know About Love by Dolly Alderton. After seeing this mentioned repeatedly on Twitter I found a copy at the library, but made a snap decision that it would be quite a fluffy, Instagram-caption kind of book. Instead, I devoured most of it on a long coach journey (coincidentally, on route to visiting one of my best female friends) and kept finding myself nodding along with a smile on my face – I particularly loved that it was about female friendships rather than looking for a romantic relationship to make her ‘whole’.
In a bad way: Normal People by Sally Rooney. This book has such rave reviews that I kept rereading pages to see if I’d somehow missed the point. Strangely this is one of those books which does stay in your mind afterwards – and perhaps that’s part of its appeal – but overall the writing felt sparse, two-dimensional and disconnected.
4. Book you “pushed” the most people to read (and they did)?
Educated by Tara Westover. I raved about this book to so many people (and often reminded them multiple times until they actually read it) because I felt so strongly that Westover’s story needed to be shared.
5. Best series you started in 2019?
Will Dean’s Tuva Moodyson series. I practically inhaled Dark Pines and Red Snow – both of which take place in a remote Swedish town surrounded by creepy forests and alarming characters – and I’m chomping at the bit to read the third instalment of this deaf reporter’s exploits later in 2020. Black River, here I come!
6. Favourite new author you discovered in 2019?
Maggie O’Farrell. I randomly picked up I Am, I Am, I Am off the library shelf because the subtitle of Seventeen Brushes With Death intrigued me. I quickly fell in love with her non-fiction writing, only to discover on finishing it that she has a lengthly back catalogue of fiction too. I’m trying hard to limit myself to one or two of her books each year so I don’t read them all too quickly!
7. Best book from a genre you don’t typically read/was out of your comfort zone?
For some reason, I’ve always assumed that crime novels weren’t my kind of books. I thought they were cheap lit for reading on a flight – but this year I happily discovered that the crime genre can be complex and totally compelling.
Thanks to The Other Sister by Elle Croft, Red Snow by Will Dean and All The Hidden Truths by Claire Askew, I’m now properly converted to the crime and mystery genre!
8. Most action-packed/thrilling/unputdownable book of the year?
This is a tricky one, as nothing I read this year was ‘action-packed’ per se – but there were a few books which felt utterly unputdownable.
I read Room by Emma Donoghue in a single afternoon, curled up on the sofa one Sunday, completely enthralled by the book’s young narrator and the horrific situation he and his mother find themselves in.
I daydreamed about My Year of Rest and Relaxation by Ottessa Moshfegh whenever the book wasn’t open in front of me, fascinated by the darkness, apathy and self-destructive nature of the central character.
And then there was The Fact of a Body by Alexandria Marzano-Lesnevich, which did strange things to my insides. A combined murder investigation and intensely vulnerable memoir, I still can’t believe what she achieved with this book. In terms of my favourite reads of this year, it’s probably a close third.
9. Book you read in 2019 that you would be MOST likely to re-read next year?
Educated, hands down – but that’s probably so I can feel re-inspired with my own book writing!
10. Favourite cover of a book you read in 2019?
Midnight Chicken by Ella Risbridger. I’ve followed Ella on Twitter for years and was so happy when she finally managed to publish this book of memoir-style recipes – and the hand-drawn cover is absolutely gorgeous. It really reflects her style of writing too; nourishing, detailed, and heartbreakingly humorous.
11. Most memorable character of 2019?
My Year of Rest and Relaxation. I’ve never read a character like this unnamed woman before: someone I found immeasurably frustrating and yet also strangely familiar. In the year after my dad died I felt myself exhibiting many of the same behavioural quirks so I had a strong sense of empathy towards her.
But then there’s also Circe, from the book of the same name by Madeline Miller. Her retelling of the Odysseus story from Circe’s perspective is beautifully written, and although I started reading with the idea that it’d feel too historical to feel relatable, it didn’t take long before I was totally absorbed in her journey. Plus her solo lifestyle on the island is awesome.
12. Most beautifully written book read in 2019?
Grief is the Thing With Feathers by Max Porter. I find it hard to get through a whole year of reading without at least a few grief-related texts, and this is one of the most highly reviewed – yet a little confounding – grief books around at the moment.
Grief is the Thing tells the story of a recently widowed father, his two young sons, and ‘Crow’, who is the embodiment of their grief. The text is sparse, poetic, piecemeal: it’s a quick read in theory, but it stays with you long after you’ve closed the book. I read this while at an Airbnb in Berlin but already know I need to buy my own copy.
13. Most thought-provoking/life-changing book of 2019?
The Fact of a Body by Alexandria Marzano-Lesnevich. This book made my brain ache with the realisation of how many twists and turns the legal system – and the lawyers, police, friends and enemies of the accused – have to take when deciding on a single person’s guilt. Similarly, the ways in which my own opinion could change drastically depending on the facts I learned was surreal.
14. Book you can’t believe you waited until 2019 to finally read?
This is Going to Hurt by Adam Kay. I went to school with his younger sister and I’d seen her sharing his memoir about working in the NHS on Facebook – but it’s such a popular book that the library was constantly out of copies. Despite being written with a comedic slant, Kay’s book is nonetheless a stark look at what’s happened to the UK’s healthcare system, and it’s something of a sobering read.
Nonetheless, everyone should read it.
15. Favourite passage/quote from a book you read in 2019?
“Perhaps the point is not to resist death. Perhaps the point is that there’s no such thing. If Simon and Saul are contacting Klara, then consciousness survives the death of the body. If consciousness survives the death of the body, then everything she’s been told about death isn’t true. And if everything she’s been told about death isn’t true, maybe death is not death at all.”
– The Immortalists by Chloe Benjamin.
16.Shortest and longest book you read in 2019?
Shortest: Grief Is The Thing With Feathers by Max Porter (114 pages)
Longest: This Must Be The Place by Maggie O’Farrell (496 pages)
17. Book that shocked you the most (plot twist, character death, etc)?
The Lucky Ones by Julianne Pachico. Not because of a plot twist but simply because her set of loosely connected short stories set in the conflict years of Colombia took my breath away in a dozen different ways. This book stayed with me for a long time.
18. Favourite non-romantic relationship of the year?
It’s a heart-wrenching relationship, but my most memorable is the connection between Maud and her sister in Elizabeth is Missing. And, in fact, the connection between Maud and the titular Elizabeth too. I didn’t expect this novel to hit me the way it did but I definitely cried at the end (and it’s probably just as worthy of the shock question above this!).
19. Favourite book you read in 2019 from an author you’ve read previously?
I’d only read Will Dean and Celeste Ng previously – everyone else was a new author to me this year – and both of their books were fantastic.
20. Best book you read in 2019 that you read based SOLELY on a recommendation from somebody else?
Probably Everything I Know About Love. Turns out constantly saving Twitter recommendations to my Goodreads account is a good idea after all!
21. Newest fictional crush from a book you read in 2019?
Circe. That girl is COMPLEX, and I always wanted to know what she was going to do next. Also I just wanted to hang out in the island kitchen with her and learn about witchy herbs and potions.
22. Best 2019 debut you read?
I don’t think anything was published in 2019 so I’ll go with The Other Sister by Elle Croft – a blogging friend who’s doing fantastical things in the crime genre. Her third book is out in 2020 and I can’t wait to delve into it.
23. Best worldbuilding/most vivid setting you read this year?
The Gloaming by Kirsty Logan. I’m not hugely into fantasy but there was a lovely mix of reality and strange magical touches in this book – and the image of the cliff edge scattered with stone statues will stay with me for a long time.
Everything I Never Told You by Celeste Ng. Set in a small Ohio town in the 1970s, the intricacies of how a Chinese-American family cope with their daughter’s death had me hooked. There’s something about a ‘mundane’ book setting which, when written well, can be so much more compelling than a huge extravagant adventure narrative. Ng absolutely nails this in both novels of hers which I’ve read (like Little Fires Everywhere which blew my mind!).
24. Book that put a smile on your face/was the most FUN to read?
This question made me realise I don’t often read ‘fun’ books..! Which is a bit of a downer.
That said, I really felt like Everything I Know About Love was a smile-inducing book – as was Goodbye, Vitamin by Rachel Khong. Despite the topic (a novel detailing how dementia affects a family), it’s a short, sweet and beautifully funny read.
25. Book that made you cry or nearly cry in 2019?
Room by Emma Donoghue. I hadn’t seen the film so didn’t know the storyline, and there were multiple moments which both lifted and broke my heart.
26. Hidden gem of the year?
The Fact of a Body by Alexandria Marzano-Lesnevich. I don’t think this book is getting the exposure it deserves!
27. Book that crushed your soul?
Grief is the Thing with Feathers by Max Porter.
28. Most unique book you read in 2019?
The Fact Of A Body. I’m still in awe of her ability to construct such a compelling narrative from little more than police reports and news footage.
29. One book you didn’t get to in 2019 but will be your number 1 priority in 2020?
Trick Mirror by Jia Tolentino. My friend’s copy has been beside my bed for months and I keep meaning to start it!
30. Book you are most anticipating for 2020?
Will Dean’s third instalment of Tuva Moodyson’s Swedish adventures. I even made my first attempt at a Netgalley review copy for Black River but was sadly unsuccessful!
What books did you love in 2019? Anything you can’t wait to read in 2020? I’d love any and all recommendations – and hopefully I’ll get through more than 33 books this year!
Many thanks to Perpetual Page Turner for these challenge questions!

How dare they? How dare they do this to little girls? She understood now why her parents go so angry when they saw the result of bombers in the white hot streets of the Middle East, why men and women wailed in anger as well as grief as they lifted the limp bodies of children from the rubble. How dare they? No, she wasn’t going to die like this, wrapped up like some helpless baby. – Stephen M. Irwin • Harder is Better! Post work out! Foot in the Ice Bath. A girl has to make a living! #hardcandytoronto. #addictedtosweat – Madonna Ciccone • Have you heard about the morning after pill, or what I like to call breakfast in bed. I have problems, like, what type of girl is going to say they’re pregnant by me today? Those are the types of issues I have. – Fetty Wap • I am an artsy girl. We live in a house made of each other and if that sounds strange that’s because it is. – George Watsky • Well Stephanie, I’d like to thank you for giving me such a kind Christmas gift, but unfortunately I didn’t get you any gifts. But then again, what can you get for the girl whose had everyone? – Chris Jericho • Well, we’re living in a material world, and I’m a material girl… or boy. – Adam Sandler • What are you two doing flirting with this nerd? The title Delightfully Different describes Asperger’s syndrome but also the qualities of this novel. – Tony Attwood • There are no good girls gone wrong – just bad girls found out. – Mae West • There are so many girls, and so few princes. – Liza Minnelli • There are two things that are more difficult than making an after-dinner speech: climbing a wall which is leaning toward you and kissing a girl who is leaning away from you. – Winston Churchill • There is a small window of opportunity for freckled girls to tan. – Jeffrey Eugenides • There is no shortage of evidence that when we support the fundamental freedoms of women and girls, they are able to realize their full potential to engage in, contribute to and benefit from sustainable development. In doing so, we will all reap the benefits; in our homes, throughout our communities, and across our nations. – Sam Kutesa • There is not one female comic who was beautiful as a little girl. – Joan Rivers • There was a little girl, When she was good, she was very, very good. But when she was bad, she was horrid. – Jun Mochizuki • There was the time I bought three cars in the span of three or four weeks. It was crazy; it wasn’t greedy. It was mine, my girl’s, my mom’s. I got Benzes for my ladies. But I felt crazy. You have to understand I come from a world where we’re very modest. But that’s not greedy. That’s nice, right? – J. Cole • There were about ten years of trying, failing, trying again, suffering rejection, etc. My first published book, ‘Story of a Girl’, was the fourth book I wrote. – Sara Zarr • There’s no point for me to party. I have a girl that I love. I don’t need that. – Ryan Cabrera • There’s only a very small representation of girls among you. Too little. Women have much to tell us in today’s society. Sometimes we are too machistas and we don’t allow enough space to women. But women can see things from a different angle to us, with a different eye. Women are able to pose questions we men are unable to understand. Look out for this fact: she is the only one who has put a question for which there is no answer. She couldn’t put it into words but expressed it with tears. – Pope Francis • These Jews who run things, who are producing this mental illness ¬-teenage suicide…all these Jewish sicknesses…that’s nothing new. The Talmud’s full of things like sex with boys and girls. – David Duke • This attitude means you haven’t met a girl worthy of your attention. You’ll want to get caught if the right girl comes along. – Simone Elkeles • This is why I can’t be with Levi. Because I’m the kind of girl who fantasizes about being trapped in a library overnight-and Levi can’t even read. – Rainbow Rowell • This was how the modern working girl behaved. She didn’t hide her femininity or apologize for it, as they did in the old days. She flaunted it and, having been given more than any woman before her, demanded even more than that. – J. Courtney Sullivan • This-this was what made life: a moment of quiet, the water falling in the fountain, the girl’s voice. . . a moment of captured beauty. Those who are truly wise will never permit such moments to escape. – Louis L’Amour • To find out a girl’s faults, praise her to her girlfriends. – Benjamin Franklin • Today’s girls are tomorrow’s women – and leaders. – Isabel Allende • Too many girls follow the line of least resistance, but a good line is hard to resist. – Mae West • Wait until France gets a hard shot in the nose. Wait until France reacts with some nasty work. They’ll get a golf-clap from the chattering class over here and a you-go-girl from Red America. France could nuke an Algerian terrorist camp and the rest of the world would tut-tut for a day, then ask if the missiles France used were for sale. And of course the answer would be oui. – James Lileks • We are living in a material world and I’m a material girl. – Madonna Ciccone • We do not suffer by accident. It does not often happen that the interference of friends will persuade a young man of independent fortune to think no more of a girl whom he was violently in love with only a few days before. – Elizabeth Bennett • We had no irony when it came to girls, though. There was just no time to develop it. One moment they weren’t there, not in any form that interested us, anyway, and the next you couldn’t miss them; they were everywhere, all over the place. One moment you wanted to clonk them on the head for being your sister, or someone else’s sister, and the next you wanted to….actually, we didn’t know what we wanted next, but it was something. Almost overnight, all these sisters (there was no other kind of girl, not yet)had become interesting, disturbing, even. – Nick Hornby • We have lingered in the chambers of the sea By sea-girls wreathed with seaweed red and brown Till human voices wake us… and we drown. – T. S. Eliot • We must not close our eyes to the fact that there are conspiring men who would pollute young boys, and girls of corresponding age, for sake of increasing profits. – David O. McKay • We’re every age at once and tucked inside ourselves like Russian nesting dolls. My mother is an 8 year old girl. My grandson is a 74 year old retiree whose kidneys just failed. And that’s the glue between me and you. That’s the screws and nails. I told you, you are supposed to be in charge of the 50 dancing girls I had set up for Miz’s celebration. – Alex Riley • What better job is there for a 17-year-old girl than being in a pop group? – Susan Ann Sulley • What do I like in a girl? I like a girl that likes me, a girl that knows how to smile and see the bright side of things. A girl that makes me a better person. – James Lafferty • What does being a girl have to do with it? There’s no time to think when you’re on the spot. – Bisco Hatori • What I know in my heart is that women and girls on the ground are powerful and that they are leaders. – Charlize Theron • When a girl cries over a guy,she really loves him.when a guy cries over a girl ,he will never love another girl like her. – Lil Wayne • When a girl is beautiful, she gets to pick – she never has to wait for someone to choose her. – Adriana Trigiani • When it’s all over I won’t miss the bruises he gave me to impress girls, or the occasional scar which will give me a story to tell my grandchildren, but I’ll definitely miss the pranks and the laughing and all the making fun of each other. I’ll miss the funky advice he gives me about everything – football, girls, video games, clothes. Most of all, I’ll miss having an older brother. – Skandar Keynes • When you were a little girl, Madam…..was this the woman you dreamed of becoming? – Andrew Sean Greer • Whenever I’m about to have sex with a girl, I play it smart and just automatically assume she has herpes; because that way I don’t have to tell her about my herpes. – Anthony Jeselnik • Whores are the most honest girls. They present the bill right away. – Alberto Giacometti • Why does a man take it for granted that a girl who flirts with him wants him to kiss her – when, nine times out of ten, she only wants him to want to kiss her? – Helen Rowland • Why is it that every time a girl says a guy is bothering her, it’s fluffed off with oh, he just likes you, as if that makes it okay? – Kelley Armstrong • Yet little by little, I was also becoming the girl who was learning to live with this, all of it, letting it weave together with everything else, the good and the bad, as life moved forward, because thats what life did, regardless of whether we were ready for it or not. – Donna Freitas • You and I both know there’s got to be some greater storyline for you than ‘girl gets heart broken, was sad forever’. I think a nice one would be ‘girl gets heart broken, was sad for a while but in her heartbreak she found freedom, friends, and the ability to look back and laugh at all she’d learned. She now lives her life on her own terms and still has fantastic hair.’ – Taylor Swift • You are the one girl that made me risk eveything for a future worth having. – Simone Elkeles • You don’t have to wait for anyone’s approval to do things. You don’t have to try to get a job and go through set steps before you start a career or start your life. That’s what I want young girls to know – you can do anything you want. Just start. – Petra Collins • You eventually get used to looking at girls picking their leotards out of their bums and that sort of stuff. – Adam Garcia • You know you love me. Xoxo, GossipGirl. – Cecily von Ziegesar • You know, honestly, if a girl can make me laugh, I’m pretty much sold. – Ryan Lochte • You may admire a girl’s curves on the first introduction, but the second meeting shows up new angles. – Mae West
