Roar like the monster you are.
>Warning: Damage detected. Power supply unstable.
I canât seem to go for a week without being at the deaths door. Android hell, or whatever they choose to call it, I donât have a space saved down there. I need to figure out how to remove this knife from my neck and get out of here. My surveillance sensors are mostly active, but my limbs refuse to move. The knife is messing with the connections between my CPU and the servos, I need to get rid of it. The scans have revealed a single weakness, it canât stand against heat. Heating up my systems could shut it down for long enough for me to rip it out of my body. I checked my internals to confirm I could do this heating stunt of mine, powered and ready. I lowered my cooling to unsafe levels and watched the temperature rise. Warning lit up all over my HUD as the heatsinks tried to deploy from my back, but where blocked by the wall I was leaning on. My chassis was glowing red hot but I could feel the knife melt, infusing with my systems. I turned up the heat as my arms were now glowing white from the heat, I could move them. I grabbed the handle on my neck and snapped it off. I pulled myself up and activated the cooling systems again, a massive amount of steam flowing from my back and filters. My hoodie was placed on a table nearby, same with the rest of my gear. The rifle however, was missing. I got dressed up and went through the scan on my system. Most of my systems were fine, but some had been damaged from the heating I did to myself. An unfortunate side effect of survival.
While I was going through my calibrations, I found several access logs from the time I was offline. She had tried to get into my files, lucky for me, she didnât get past my firewall. I closed up my exposed servos on my forearms and headed outside. I heard a car approaching, a black limousine rolled up to the hotel. 2 men stepped outside and told me to stay where I was. I cycled my fingers and stood still. A third man climbed out of the car. Grey suit and greying hair, lined with gold aviators. His grin sent a shiver down my metallic spine. I closed my hand to a fist and braced for whatever was going to happen. The woman ran outside from the hotel and aimed at me with the rifle I had modified. She hadnât felt the spikes in her arm yet, last time she held the venom she fell from the shock the needle had caused. The needle was gone now, but the grip still held the injectors. She pulled the trigger as the spikes inside the grip deployed. Her face went from firm to shock. She shrieked as her blood was infused with the gunpowder, forming into a powerful toxin within her body. Whoever made that rifle was completely insane and most likely not a human. She fell to the ground as blood bled from her eyes. The 3 men stepped inside the limo and drove next to me.
âYou are quite lucky, Mr. Fifteenth. We shall see each other later. Goodbyeâ Said the greying man in the backseat before rolling his window up. The car didnât take long to disappear around a corner. There I was, alone with a corpse and a rifle. I checked up on the woman, no pulse and blood toxin levels reaching deadly levels. I carried her inside and did all I could with the medical supplies I had. She would be in a coma for a while, but might just survive.
I got outside again and tried to locate a way to travel. Pubnya, I donât know why I had to get there, but I had to. Something there was calling me. I tried to locate a vehicle to help me get there, my scans revealed a sealed garage close by. Walking there, I came to a large metal door. It was sealed alright, almost airtight. I looked around the building and found a set of unlocked and broken windows that would allow me to access the building. I dropped inside, kicking up dust from the old shelves. I stayed still for a moment, keeping my eyes on the sensors. There was nothing living in here, I stood up. There were 2 doors, one to my left and one on the right. I opened the left door first and found a short hallway, one door at the end of it. It was locked, but from the appearance, I would guess it lead outside. I returned to the other door and pulled it open. Oh boyâŚ
A muscle car with a machine gun mounted on the roof, armored all over. Someone had spent several weeks building this. I sat down in the driverâs seat and took in the feeling. An armored death race vehicle, fits me. A game controller was attached to the steering wheel with labels for everything. Fire, control and release mine made me grin with the feeling of power at my fingertips. I glanced at the mirror past all the armor plating and saw a corpse sitting in the corner. One previous owner, carefully kept and only driven on SaturdaysâŚ
I looked around for keys to start this monster with no luck. There was however, a button. Pushing it brought the engine to life. A v8 roared inside the garage as the door started to open. I was on the road, and I was not going to stop until I got to city that called my name. Full tank of gas and fully rearmed machine gun, Ready up.
Roar until you canât no more, leave a mark on everything you do for the sake of future.

You donât know youâre alive until youâre almost dead. Chapter Zero. Genesis.
Year 2061. July first. Yellowstone national park. Yellowstone Caldera.
The earth heaved and shook. The groundwater was made toxic by the sulphuric gasses that pushed up through the earths crust. The wildlife began leaving the increasingly inhospitable area, almost as if they knew what was to come.
Humanity had been warned, but wouldn't listen. Thankfully, the earth remained calm for now.
Year 2114. December 21st. 9:00 pm Friday. Northern Sweden.
31 year old Lars Karlsson, advanced physicist at I.a.c.e. (Institute for advancement of clean energy) had fallen asleep on the couch. They had left Stockholm 06:30 in the morning, and driven for 11 hours, to their cabin at lake Hornavan, just north of Arjeplog, for a 14 day Christmas holiday. His 26-year old wife Lena, pharmacologist and yoga instructor, was singing and dancing to the kitchen radio, while fixing some snacks. She looked out the window at the raging snowstorm, and was thankful to be home. On a clear day she could see the village where she was born and raised. And she was thankful to be out of the noisy, dirty capital for the first time all year. She put her hands on her growing stomach and smiled. "Thirteen more weeks till I can see you two." She couldn't wait to be a mom and show them all her favorite spots in the mountains.
She put away the bags with chips and candy, closed the pantry and the dishwasher, and reached for the bowl on the counter. She gasped and grasped for the edge of the counter as a sharp stabbing pain radiated out from her stomach.
Lars awoke to his wife screaming his name. "LAAAARS!" He stumbled into the dining room, his wife stood in the doorway to the kitchen, her grey sweatpants were stained dark red down the inside of both her legs. He froze. He didn't know what to do! "Could you possibly call 112 Lars? NOOW!" Her screeching voice jolted him into action. He fumbled desperately with his phone. He misdailed 112 three times before he got it right. Lena felt something warm slowly running down her legs. She didn't look, knowing full well what it was but she didn't want to see. She had to keep calm, she closed her eyes and thought of her babies. Seconds felt like hours. A woman answered and she heard "what's your emergency?" Lars stuttered, made some strange noises and couldn't form a single word, let alone a sentence. "Give me the phone Lars." He held it out towards her, across the entire dining room. Her patience had its limits tested. "Come here with it, please, Lars." He was not good in high stress situations. "Hello?" Said the voice on the phone. "Hi, I'm Lena Karlsson, we're up at Hornavan, I'm 29 weeks along with twins, and I just had a bleed. A big one." She listened intently to the woman on the other end, explaining that the helicopter couldn't fly in the storm, and the closest delivery room was at least 3 hours away on a good day. "Well we don't have a choice do we? I can't do this alone, and my husband is completely useless right now." Lars looked at her and nodded in agreement. "We'll get there, one way or another." She hung up the phone, her mind racing. She knew time was of the essence, but her fear kept getting in the way of her reasoning. She knew she had to solve this. Normally, their cabin was perfect in her mind, there wasn't even much of a road leading up to it. Their 4x4 Jeep had barely made it up to the cabin. That would probably get stuck in the snow somewhere. In the shed outside sat the Yamaha 360 Propulse snowmobile they bought last year. It was definitely fast enough. On flat hard snow it would do 140 mph. They'd be there in 80 minutes at that speed. Or crash and die horribly. Stay here and die for sure? Or save her babies? There was no doubt in her mind. "Lars, go start the snowmobile." He nodded and hurried out the door. Lena went to the hallway and opened the closet. Gloves, overalls, boots, helmets. Everything was where it should be. She heard the high pitched whine of the Yamaha turbine spooling up. Thank god the battery wasn't dead. She got out of her bloodied pants, put on the insulating inner suit, and stepped in the overall. Lars came back in. "It's just outside the door." "Good, get dressed." He didn't even think, he just did what he was told. He helped her with her zipper and helmet, then closed his own. They stepped out into the snowstorm looking like two inflated racing drivers.
Lars climbed on the front seat of the snowmobile. "Are you sure you want to drive?" She shouted over the wind and the idling turbine. He thought for a second, then scooted backwards. She climbed on carefully, and sat down as slow as she could. She wasn't in extreme pain, but she didn't want to push it. She put the dead mans grip on her wrist, turned on the lights and the heat in the handle and seats. She put it in gear and started the descent down the steep mountainside. She had picked this one for its superior handling in deep snow and long range. It's turbine engine used so little fuel they hadn't even filled it up last year, it had just under half a tank left. She hoped it would be enough. She steered carefully past the trees that marked their path down, winding slowly down to the main road. When the path ended she couldn't see the road, but she saw that there were no trees. She turned it in the right direction and pressed her thumb down hard on the throttle.
360 horsepower of supercharged nitrogen turbine erupted into life, propelling them forward so hard she almost lost her grip on the handlebars. Lars who couldn't really see anything wasn't ready and almost fell off. He was scared out of his mind, but Lena only thought of her babies. A stray thought crossed her mind as she saw the needle pass 120 mph. If we crash now, we won't even have time to feel it. We'll just be dead. She didn't look at the speedometer again.
Five days later, December 27th, Lena and Lars waited for the doctor to discharge her and the babies. Lars had fueled the snowmobile the day before and bought a sled to transport their babies in. He had been ambushed at the gas station by a reporter that had heard of the story about the speed demon mom on a quest to save her twins. They were in the papers today. After a quick chat with the doctor they we're on their way out to the parking lot, where the same reporter wanted an interview with Lena as well. She kindly declined, with a long journey ahead of them, she just wanted to go home.
"Please," he begged, "just one picture?" She looked at Lars. "Sure." he replied.
Lena held the boy, and Lars held the girl. "Have you decided any names yet?" Lena nodded and looked at her son. "Erik." Lars nodded and looked at his baby girl. "Sophia?" He looked to Lena. She nodded approvingly. "Sophia."

NASA will acquire semi-automatic rifles, a mysterious version of Abrams tank was spotted in Romania, and other U.S. military stories you may have missed during this yearâs nonstop news cycle.
We take a look back at some of the U.S. militaryâs biggest news stories.
As the year winds down itâs a great time to reflect on the top stories of the past 12 months. This is the last installment where we look at the stories that shaped this year.
NASA to buy semi-automatic rifles.
First of all, this is a story about NASA, which captured the popular imagination of thousands of people: U.S. space agency has announced plans to buy a lightweight, 5.56Ă45mm, magazine-fed, gas-operated semi-automatic rifle designed to perform multiple uses under various conditions.
This rifle, according to notice, shall be versatile as well as reliable and shall be engineered for a wide variety of applications, to include military/law enforcement.

U.S. Air Force scientists developed liquid metal which autonomously changes structure.
U.S. military scientists also have developed a âTerminator-likeâ liquid metal that can autonomously change the structure, just like in a Hollywood movie.
The scientists developed liquid metal systems for stretchable electronics â that can be bent, folded, crumpled and stretched â are major research areas towards next-generation military devices.
Conductive materials change their properties as they are strained or stretched. Typically, electrical conductivity decreases and resistance increases with stretching.

U.S. Air Force regenerates B-52H bomber after sitting in storage for last ten years
A B-52H âWise Guyâ bomber built in the early 1960s and put into retirement in an Air Forceâs âboneyardâ in the Arizona desert over 10 years ago is returning to service.
For only the second time in U.S. Air Force history, the service has brought a B-52H Stratofortress bomber out of storage âboneyardâ at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Arizona and delivered it to an operational unit.
The Air Force lost one of its bombers in 2016, it started a chain of events that made âWise Guyâ only the second B-52H ever to be taken from the 309th AMARG for active service. The first, nicknamed âGhost Rider,â was brought to Barksdale AFB in 2015, also by members of the 307th and 2nd Bomb Wings.

""Oops, she was driving a stolen car without insurance?""
Looking for some advice. Someone I know was caught driving a stolen vehicle. She did not know the vehicle was stolen. Her passenger was claiming to be the new owner of the vehicle. He picked her up and was impaired so she insisted to drive, as she did not want to be driven around by a drunk guy. She was pulled over. Being pulled over was not the result of a violation, just pulled over because the truck came back as stolen. She is a responsible driver who was actually at the time a Driving instructor. She and the passenger were arrested for the stolen vehicle. At the police station both her and the guy (jerk) both stated that she did not know the truck was stolen. She was released without charges to do with the theft of the vehicle. She was however ticketed for driving without insurance. What can she do? At the time she did have her own vehicle and her own insurance policy. She has never had a ticket, accident or a criminal charge. She is in her 30's. This happened in Alberta Canada. Please no responses like get a lawyer obviously she is going to do that. I am more interested in, if she is found guilty what is the potential fine, is there any chance her car insurance would cover her in another vehicle, and so forth.""

US health insurance - question?
We are Canadians moving to the US in couple of weeks and we have just applied for medical insurance in the US, filled out all the papers and we'd like to know whether the insurance company will call our Canadian doctor to get our medical records? We want to make our doctor aware of this and at the same time, to be honest, we did not know exactly the dates when we've been at the doctor's office, we put down approximate dates on the insurance applic form and we do not want to be denied because of misrepresentation or something like that. At the same time, here in Canada, just because healthcare is universal, you don't get any medical papers or records to keep track on when you've been at the doctor's office. Thanks a lot.""

Healthcare Insurance: True or False?
1. The Affordable Care Act does not require employers to provide health insurance for their employees. 2. No employer, in any state, is required to provide health insurance to any employee, full time or part time. 3. Employers do not have to report the cost of insurance on employee W-2s in 2011. This reporting is optional in 2011. The reporting requirement is intended to be informational and provide employees with greater transparency into health care costs. The amounts reported are not taxable.""

Does anyone know any cheap car insurance companies for new drivers?
I am coming up to 19 (1 week) and have had my UK Full Manual license since December 2012, it's now May 2013. I have tried everything to find cheap car insurance online and it's virtually impossible! I don't know if it's my area that I live causing it to be so high, or my lack of experience with driving. I have tried different addresses (i.e. family members) not in to be fraudulent but to see if it is the area, which is proving to be quite true. But I've tried insurance comparison websites and asked friends who they got their insurance from and still no good. My cheapest quote is around 2,000 which I just can't afford. I am going to university in September and will be going on various placements within the weeks I am there, so a car would really help get me to places easily. Also, could anyone recommend any sites I could try for my insurance quotes? N.B. I haven't purchased a car yet (as there is no point if I can't afford insurance) but is there a year which can help to lower the cost of car insurance? Buying insurance right after an accident?
Just a question, and I don't want assumptions that I'm the person in the scenario because I'm not and this has just been a burning question of mine for a long time. Ok, so someone gets into an accident and buys insurance right after. The thing is that the insurance papers will have the DATE it took effect, not the TIME it took effect. So in all respects, it was active on the day the accident happened and the person in question has to go to court to provide proof of insurance, in which the judge will see that it took effect on the day the accident happened, so the question remains, is this person covered?""

My husband is only eligible for group insurance due to multiple injuries/surgeries obtained from playing sports. His employer does not provide benefits, nor does mine. I was able to get insurance privately, but they refused him. What else can we do?""

Both of my parent's drive 2011 Range Rovers so they have experience with the Land Rover brand- and they said that as I'm living at home.. my dad could be the policy holder and I could be a named driver. I may be buying a 2010 model when I'm 18, I'm 16 currently as people have told me that it's not really worth buying a brand new one. Just so the car is old and isn't new. I'm not in to small cars..""
Best Car For Cheap Car Insurance?
I am looking for a used car that will be of good quality, reliability and value. In addition, I would like the insurance to be as low as possible. Any thoughts on specific models that meet these requirements?""
What are some some affordable car insurances?
I am currently with State Farm and pay about $90/mo. I would like to switch to another ins. compay with prices around the same. I'm 24 with a clean driving record. So without giving out all my info, what car insurance do you have or know of?""

Assistance with auto insurance.....What do I do?
I am 20 years old. I have had my license for almost two years. I recently got a car and insured myself with All State. After everything went through, I got a notice about a week after saying I was declined for coverage because I haven't had my license for three years?! Tour Tales # 4

Tour Tales # 4
TOUR TALES # 4 There is something about travelling through actual wilderness that I love. There is no cell phone service; there are no lights, no gas stations, no stores⌠Nothing. Beyond the odd vehicle, it is just you, the road and endless expanses of trees or mountains or flats. Itâs places like these that remind you what you are and how powerless you are at the end of the day.
âI know weâre lost. My phone stopped working. Shut the fuck up, Barbara.â
Take away all forms of technology and how far can you make it beyond the remaining fuel in your vehicle? For many people â not very far, I guess. Most are busy living in populated areas full of every amenity and modern convenience you can think of. I believe if all of a sudden, the power went out and stayed out, then total anarchy would arise within weeks. Many wouldnât have learned to live without a distraction, having taken these things for granted most, if not all of their lives. The worst thing is that a lot of people feel like they have a right to most of these technologies that they had no hand in creating. And to some degree, I suppose the life they were born into grants them that. As of typing this, I am only 28, but I remember when computers were a very expensive and almost pointless (by todayâs standards) luxury that took up way too much space. The internet was only a soft word spoken on many a tongue; few knowing what insanities lay in store! Regardless, pluck someone out of their luxurious modern western life and plant them down in the middle of nowhere with hundreds of kilometres of nothing surrounding them and youâll learn what kind of person they are! Will they be a self-sufficient hero of the wilderness, building you shelter and shaping a spear from that duct-taped on tail pipe of your equally duct-taped van to hunt the meal for the day? Or will they crumble from the weight of having absolutely zero survival skills and curl up shivering under the van? Well⌠enough with the doom and gloom⌠this is supposed to be a fun blog! My band were on the road one April and we had just finished a tour that had been routed across the entire continent within 20 days. We had a show every single day, most of the drives were around 10 hours and almost all of the load in times were around 3 pm. Some were earlierâŚ
I think we averaged about 2-3 hours of sleep per night, then made up another 2-3 each in the van each day. It caught up with us really quick.
This was fun after 2 hours of sleep.
Iâll think Iâll chalk up this story to that condition! So we are driving through North Ontario. We had played in Thunder Bay the night before and were on route to Timmins (about a 9 hour drive). Before the show in T-Bay had ended, we voted to drive through the night so we could get to Timmins early, get a huge breakfast and chill out before the show the next evening. So off we went! I remember earlier on that tour we had driven the opposite way on the exact same stretch and there was a 200+ km stretch of highway that had nothing but 2 lanes and trees. Before you left the towns on either end, there are gigantic flashing signs saying âNO GAS STATIONS FOR 211 KM, CHECK FUELâ or something of that ilk. I was the driver on that particular stretch, and having half a tank of gas I thought we were well in the clear. In the past, we would have made it without any problems, but our vanâs oxygen sensors were fucked. So of course we burned way more gas than I thought we would. We made that entire trip with all the windows up, no music playing and me counting every single kilometre beneath my breath. We literally made it to the next gas station before we ran out of gas. Thank FUCK. On our way back through that very stretch, I was one of the lucky ones to get to sleep after that show in Thunder Bay. Slinking down onto the bench behind the driverâs seat, I went to bed stressing the importance of making that last stop for gas before the warning signs numerous times and then I drifted off⌠I awoke sometime after sunrise to our guitarist and soundman having a bit of a panic between themselves. Sitting up, I was just in time to catch a sign indicating the next town was about 100 km away pass us by. I then looked at the fuel gauge, whose needle was nearly resting on EMPTY. And of course buying fuel canisters was only a conversation we had on numerous tours and of course the fuel warning light did not work. I love band vans.
We ran out of gas pretty quickly after that.
It just so happened we ran out of gas just as we were passing the entrance to an abandoned quarry, which was easily large enough to pull the van sideways in.
We came to a stop and got out to stretch our legs. We were in the middle of nowhere, broken down with no phone service with one remaining date on our tour.
What we did was write âGAS?â in the back of a pizza box with a sharpie and took turns trying to flag down passing trucksâŚ
Pictured: Every musician ever.
There were mostly semi trucks, who didnât even bother to slow down â not that their diesel fuel would have helped much. Before long, we found some beer left in the cooler and continued to hopelessly flag down traffic.
After about 2 and a half hours, an older couple driving a pickup drove up to us. I guess one of the truckers passing by had radioed to them to tell them about our situation, which was VERY lucky for us. They gave us a full canister of fuel which allowed us to get to the next gas station.
We actually made it to load in on time.
The moral of the story: just buy a fucking gas canister and keep it filled.

Just Drive
We were left to ourselves most of that summer. We both worked, as did our parents. Dad was gone for weeks at a time. He worked in Phoenix, coming home only on weekends. Mom had earned her diploma, but still had to study for her state nursing exam. She was also busy monitoring my grandmother who had health problems and was in and out of the hospital. Mom also started a new job, and was going through orientation â full-time employment for several weeks. Toss in that I was a youngest child and the whole active parenting thing had gone by the wayside.
Rossâ parents both worked â his mom had taken a position at a greeting card company and was busy with a stuffed animal project. His dad was a devoted P&Ger. (All hail the soap works.) Ross was nineteen and had already been away from home for over a year. He hardly needed supervision.
We mostly abandoned the few friends who were around. Many of Rossâ contemporaries stayed away for summer internships, jobs, or traveled abroad. Over the school year, Iâd fallen out with many of my friends. David was busy with a new round of people. Christopherâs and my friendship disintegrated the previous fall. Julie worked two jobs, desperately trying to save enough money for tuition. Erin was doing the same. Valli was madly in love with Jerry, a guy she met through her Young Life activities, and she worked full-time as a lifeguard, so she wasnât around much. Shari left for her last summer of camp â this time as a counselor. Anna spent her summer abroad, Victor was required to attend summer Reserve training and broke his leg. Heâll deny it to the end of his days, but he spent his summer smoking pot on a neighborâs back deck.
I literally lived at the Jâs' for days at a time. I stopped by their house between baby-sitting jobs, entered through the unlocked garage/basement, left messages on the white-board in the breakfast nook and went on with my business. We slept in Ross' long twin bed and I fought with those damn high countertops in the kitchen. (Side note:  Rossâ family is very tall â his mother is 5â11â if she isnât 6â tall. His dad is at least 6â2.â âLittleâ brother Scott topped out at 6â5 at least.) At some point in the late 70s or early 80s, they remodeled their kitchen and chose to have the countertops installed a few inches higher than is the industry standard. I am 5â4â tall. I could not reach the cabinets, and working at the counter was awkward. Ross found a step stool for me to use while I was there. Had we been ten years older, you could describe us as having moved in together. But we werenât ten years older. We were teenagers, just seventeen and nineteen. We lacked experience to draw upon, and the confidence that comes with it.
Rossâ bedroom in his parentsâ house was our haven. The stereo and speakers (all four of them), the albums and computers - all were strewn with laundry - clean shirts and dirty socks. Soldering tools, wires, pliers, and desk lamps were scattered over the âdesk.â I never saw an actual work surface - it was littered with computer pieces; motherboards, hard drives, video boards. This masculine clutter was familiar. My fatherâs workshop at home, and my brotherâs room before he left. To me, it was a very comfortable placeâŚfull of warmth. The door to Scott's room was open often enough to hear Scott playing guitar and to talk and chat and visit. We spent hours together there. Chaka Khan, Pat Metheny, Phil Collins, Joe Jackson, and Neil Diamond (his mom never seemed to mind when he cranked Neil Diamond or Phil Collins) were just some of the musical favorites that summer. I can still see him playing air guitar with a particularly fun riff from some album or the other. (These were vinyl albums â Ross was saving his money to buy a CD-player and a replacement for the guitar heâd destroyed in the Corral Show some two years previous. CDs were still new and the packaging was controversial â sold in the long cardboard boxes with plastic overwrap. In the mid-90s I got irritated with the lack of space in our basement, and convinced my husband to finally dispose of his collection of long-boxes from his own mid-80s CD purchases.)
We spent evenings in the TV room watching his dad flick through the thirty or so TV channels that were available when cable was new. We had been away from adult supervision for too long, so we settled into the couch in front of the television to make nice with the ârents. My head snuggled up under Ross' arm. Ross tried to make idle small talk with his dad - attempting to smooth the relationship. It used to drive me nuts the way his dad would flip, flip, flip through umpteen channels and seemingly watch four shows at the same time. What's sad is I do that today. Give me the remote control, and I flip, flip, flip and watch 3-4 shows at the same time. Damn commercials.
The TV room was just that â a TV room. Not a âfamily roomâ like so many homes have today, but a TV room. In years past the room had probably been a sunroom, a sitting room, perhaps an office. It was on the west side of the house, so in the late afternoon, youâd have to close the blinds against the glare of the sun in order to see the TV. The opening to the room was off the living room. A formal living room with couches, a curio cabinet and the grand piano. No doorway, no formal archway, just a large open space in the wall between the living room and TV room. The room was long and narrow and ran the length of the house. At one end was the couch, placed under the windows facing the television. And at the other end was a table and built-in shelves that held the fish tanks, the hermit crab and the encyclopedia set. There was no room to do much of anything else.
Late one night, after the eleven oâclock news, we watched C.H.U.D. (Cannibalistic Humanoid Underground Dwellers) on cable. While the rest of the family slept upstairs, we curled up on the couch and stared at the blue flickering screen. The TV set provided the only light on in the house. I covered my eyes and squealed at the gruesome parts. I was fascinated and terrified at the same time. Iâm not good with horror flicks â even bad ones. After the movie, Ross walked me out to my car, I got in, and to avoid waking his parents, he pushed it out of the driveway. I coasted down the street, popped the clutch and drove home. Ross taught me that particular bit of street knowledge, how to start a car by popping the clutch. Useful only if youâre driving an old-fashioned standard transmission.
Some nights we just drove. We put hundreds of miles on various vehicles - the VW Rabbit (1981 gray, two-door, hatchback - diesel, cloth seats) has especially pungent memories. We knew of only two or three gas stations in the county that supplied diesel, so invariably we drove to one of them to fill up the tank. The VW Vanagon and the Oldsmobile Station Wagon (with maroon vinyl seats and the compass on the front dash) were also driven more than once. We talked about our dreams, our insecurities, our parents, gossiped about what so and so was doing, and played the game of âidentify the vehicle by the headlightsâ; Hondas versus Datsuns versus Fords, versus Chryslers â throw in an exotic Volvo or Saab. I never quite got the knack of that one. He was so disappointed when I mis-identified a vehicle. To this day, I can drive in reverse pretty well. For whatever reason, I had lots of practice. On a whim, Ross might decide to drive home from somewhere in reverse, just for the hell of it. He backed around parking lots, he backed down long driveways, he backed down the street. And believe it or not, I really think we always wore our seatbelts.
We spent the Fourth of July holiday together. In the morning I stood by the side of the road and watched the parade (Dad was involved because of council, mom was with the ambulance crew) then stopped at Morenoâs for lunch and volleyball. Finally, Ross and I spent the late afternoon in his bedroom. His parents were out with their own friends, Scott was gone, so Ross and I were contentedly alone. We spent the hours spooned on his bed, listening to music, enjoying uninterrupted togetherness. We were supposed to go to the town fireworks display at the high school athletic field, but never made it. We watched a few fireworks from the window, then fell back to bed and fell asleep. I got home to my own bed in my parents house sometime in the early morning hours of the fifth. And we both had to work the next morning.
 *      *      *
Ross was very close with his brother. Though only 2 ½ years apart in age, due to the quirks of the school system they were three years apart in school. Even so, they shared everything. They read the same books, swapped albums, music, they played in the same band together. Ross passed on snippets of wisdom for dealing with teachers and peers. In one of his letters from Wooster, Ross had encouraged me to introduce myself to Scott, concerned for his younger brotherâs well-being. A few weeks into the summer, Ross realized his little brother Scott had a crush on me. It stands to reason - I had first fooled around with his best buddy Mark and then was a constant presence not just in his home, but in his brother's bedroom, an open door away. He must have caught us more than once in various states of undress. (I never did understand that floor plan, why was there a door between Scott's and Ross' bedrooms?) Â
I felt a fondness toward Scott myself. He was my friend as well as Rossâ brother and we had enjoyed our own friendship and escapades before Ross came home. Aside from Scrabble games at Corral, Mark, Scott, Igor and their buddy Jon had the brilliant idea to make their very own episode of Star Trek. Jon had a ton of video equipment. Igor put together a set in his basement, and Scott, Mark, and Igorâs little brother Alex were recruited as actors. Mark starred as the Captain, Scott played Spock, Alex and Igor posed as the science officers, and they needed a girl to play âLieutenant U-whor-a.â Whether I was doing a favor for Igor or Mark, or both, they managed to get me to agree in a weak moment. Jon was the director/cameraman, and we made up dialogue as we went along.
My character, as you might surmise from the characterâs name, was the spaceship harlot. My scenes involved sitting in the captainâs lap (Mark), attempting sexual distraction; sitting in my chair at the communications center, showing off my legs whilst making obscene gestures; and rattling off one-liners like, âWhy jack-off when you can have me for free?â Some âsweetânâinnocentâ stuff, eh?
It took several days of filming in Morenoâs basement, and I couldnât be there for all the filming days. I filmed the first day, and then was busy with other activities. My absence led to some creative explanations as to why U-Whor-A was absent from the bridge, including AIDS, Toxic Shock Syndrome, and other female ails resulting from monthly cycles. Igor and Alexâs dad got fed up with the âsetâ in the basement. He declared a deadline by which the crap had to be cleaned up. The guys begged me to return so they could finish the film.
Over the summer Jon and Scott edited the thing and roped Ross into designing credits for them. I didnât see the finished product until years later. It is a rare masterpiece that someday Iâll have to explain to my children. I donât look forward to the discussion with my children; explaining it to my husband was embarrassing enough.
And yet with all of that, I was Rossâ girl. So in deference to Scottâs feelings, Ross and I made a conscious effort to monitor our behavior. It just so happened those were the same weeks our parents had been coming down hard on us to behave ourselves. I suppose we had gotten a bit out of control, and needed to pull back and exercise proper decorum.

Scandal! Fire!! And Victors partner?
Your local petrol heads take on all things 4 wheels...
A very happy Thursday to you from me, your resident petrol head Duncan McDonald.
So right, whats up with Ford and its recall? If you havenât heard #Ford #Kugas have been catching a light all by themselves. If you havenât heard about it in the news maybe you have seen the Nandos spoof ads or the memes on social media. #toosoonnandos Â
One death and 48 reported fires. Eleven of those in the past month â the issue appears to be simple enough: insufficient cooling to prevent material warping of the engineâs aluminium cylinder head, which cracks, leaking oil into a very hot engine compartment, resulting rather predictably in a fire.
Ford has issued a recall of the more than 4500 Kugas so if you are driving one right now, it best be to your closest Ford Dealership.
Also in the news VW emissions scandal has progressed to prosecution of a few involved...
The Volkswagen emissions scandal (also known as "emissionsgate" or "dieselgate") erupted on 18 September 2015, when the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued a notice of violation of the Clean Air Act to German automaker Volkswagen Group after it was found that Volkswagen had intentionally programmed turbocharged direct injection(TDI) diesel engines to activate certain emissions controls only during laboratory emissions testing. The programming caused the vehicles' NOx output to meet US standards during regulatory testing but emit up to 40 times more NOx in real-world driving.[15] Volkswagen deployed this programming in about eleven million cars worldwide, and 500,000 in the United States, during model years 2009 through 2015.
The company agreed to pay $4.3 billion in penalties, the largest fine ever levied by the U.S. government on an auto company. On top of the already $14.7-billion settlement that VW signed, in July, to cover customersâ class-action suits. In addition, six Volkswagen executives have been charged with running a decade-long scheme to rig VW diesel engines with so-called defeat devices. (-wikipedia)
Amazingly enough that has not tarnished the local market sales in any way as VW leads the passenger segment of the local market with its VW Polo and Polo Vivo outselling everything. It is also blistering ahead and gaining market share with a few of its new models, notably the new, VW Tiguan, which I hopefully will have on test soon.
On to some good news: The brand new PEUGEOT 3008DKRs completed the 2017 Dakar Rallyâs 9, 000-kilometre run through Paraguay, Bolivia and Argentina in the top 3 spots in Buenos Aires, Argentina. This landmark one-two-three result takes PEUGEOTâs score on the Dakar to six outright victories just in time for the launch of the new Peugeot 3008 SUVâs across the world.
Peugeot, still carries a reliability and low resale stigma in the minds of our 'more mature' audience here in SA and I hope this impressive performance goes a long way to remind us saffers that in todays automotive trade, sometimes your brand perception could be a bit off the factsâŚ
5 months away until the 3008âs are launched locally and I am very keen to drive it.
Speaking of what I am keen to drive, I have been in yet another bakkie this past week as I am almost always keen for a bakkie. The bakkie market in SA is alight with new metal, with the soon to be realised Renault Duster Oroch being of most interest to me, and a heated competition for top sales spot with the Hilux this past month trumping the Ford Ranger.
This week I was in the new look Isuzu double cab. If you follow me regularly, you will know I was recently in the extended cab Isuzu which I had high praise for, despite its significant price premium over the relevant other brands offering in the cab and a half space.
This week is slightly different as I wasnât as impressed as I usually am with the GM offering. The double cab just didnât live up to the expectation from all my previous drives in an Isuzu.
Firstly, the window winder on the passenger side didnât work the way it usually does, now I know this sounds like nitpicking and is test vehicle specific, but this seemed to set the tone of the weeks experience for me rather adequately. Let me explain: I needed to transport an office chair from one house to the other and thought sure no problem, this week I have a double cab bakkie, no problem. But when I tried to open the tonneau cover, I found it impossible to remove. Further to this the chair didnât fit in the back of the cab either, so I ended transporting my new desk chair in the back of Hyundai Atoz⌠not a good impression and certainly a little embarrassing for the bakkie guyâŚ
It was a similar let down in the ride comfort department. At walking pace speed the double cab seems to rock from side to side or wobble on its suspension. Further to this, the suspension setup is rock hard, worse than the Mazda BT50, almost reminiscent of a Nissan Hardbody from 15 years ago, which is fine if you are loading the Isuzu everyday, but is simply unacceptable for the leisure buyer. Although on the blurb on Isuzuâs website, it does mention that the KB come out with heavy duty Twin-tube Gas Pressurised shock absorbers. It also goes on to mention that you can load over a 1000kg on the back but before you think that is where the compromise comes in, the most comfortable bakkie Iâve driven, the Ford Ranger has the same payload.
I also battled to find the most suitable cruising rpm with the 5 speed manual transmission. Cruising at 120kph in 5th gear the engine revs towards the top of the torque band of 1800-2800 rpm. This leaves you feeling that a 6th gear would have dropped the revs to a more comfy 2000rpm.
The start stop button, is annoying, having to start the bakkie in neutral. Its just an unnecessary faf. The navigation system is certainly not easy to use. I preferred to use my google maps on my phone. There is no mute button on the steering wheel for the media player, so if you need to have a quick conversation with someone for example at the drive through, you need to hold down the volume button. And the seat belt reminder alarm is as gentle on your ears as a room full of crying toddlers. Now before you think I donât buckle up before I drove off, youâre wrong. The same calamity engulfs you when your passenger unbuckles, even when the vehicle isnât in motion, for example a farm gate is going to be a noisy affair until he or sheâs bum is off the seat.
Anyway those were the attributes I didnât appreciate , those I did included:
The economy of the 250 D-Teq 100 kilowatt diesel engine is class leading. Manufacturer claims a combined 7.9 litre per 100km for the 4x4 model. This is paired with a massive 80 litre fuel tank.
Safety features include Electronic Stability Control, with elements like Brake Assist, Traction Control, Electronic Brake-force Distribution and Anti-lock Braking Systems. The LX model is fitted with six airbags so you and your passengers are safe. And the steering wheel is fitted with easy to use multi function controls and cruise control.
The New look exterior styling is great, leaps ahead from the previous design. But here is the biggy, price comparisons between the big three leave the Isuzu far above what you would expect to pay for an Isuzu 4x4 double cab.
The equivalent Toyota Hilux 4x4 double cab 2.4 GD-6 4X4 SR is priced from R462 500 The Ford Ranger 2.2 TDCI D/cab xl 6 speed manual 4x4 starts from R431 900
And the Isuzu KB 250 D-Teq LE 4x4 comes in at R462 000
And this shows in sales figures: As I mentioned earlier Toyota leading the pack with 3074 units moved in December, Ford selling 2665 of its Rangers and Isuzu managing a distant 3rd of 912 units.
I think if Isuzu sorted out the ergonomic and comfort issues, promoted their bakkie in a different paint option and offered some style packages, and realised that they need to price point their offering more reasonably, they would see a vast improvement in uptake of the new KB double cab.
Its good looking enough to compete, we know it has lasting pedigree and can perform.
Its just expensive and unnecessarily finicky it some areas. Come Isuzu, we are rooting for you.
So do you think Iâm totally off base or on point, comment on the Facebook page.
Till next week, happy and safe motoring...

Top 10 U.S. military news of 2019: NASA to buy rifles, Boeing unveils F-15EX, scientists develops liquid metal and more
NASA will acquire semi-automatic rifles, a mysterious version of Abrams tank was spotted in Romania, and other U.S. military stories you may have missed during this yearâs nonstop news cycle.

Bell unveiled the displayed mock-up of its new futuristic rotorcraft, called the 360 Invictus.
Bell, part of American conglomerate Textron, displayed mock-up of its new rotorcraft, 360 Invictus, during the Association of the United States Army (AUSA) National Conference.
This advanced aircraft will have a transformative impact through next-generation flight performance, increased safety and greater operational readinessâall to deliver decisive capabilities.
Bell has decades of experience providing attack and reconnaissance aircraft to the warfighter, such as the Kiowa Warrior which delivered high reliability and availability through more than 850,000 flight hours. The Bell 360 Invictus design builds from that legacy, Bellâs commercial innovations, and from the success in the development and manufacturing capabilities required for Future Vertical Lift (FVL) as part of the Joint Multi-Role Technology Demonstration (JMR TD) over the past six years.

U.S. Navy launches newest nuclear-powered aircraft carrier
The U.S. Navyâs largest shipbuilder, Huntington Ingalls, launched the newest nuclear-powered aircraft carrier nine days after the christening.
Huntington Ingalls Industriesâ Newport News Shipbuilding division launched John F. Kennedy (CVN 79) into the James River for the first time.
With the aid of six tugboats, Kennedy was guided down the river about a mile from Newport News Shipbuildingâs Dry Dock 12, where it has been under construction, to the shipyardâs Pier 3. There, the ship will undergo additional outfitting and begin its testing program three months ahead of its original schedule.
âThis move is significant in that it represents a shift in focus from erecting the ship in dock to final completion and outfitting at the pier,â said Mike Butler, program director for Kennedy. âIt is also a testament to the amazing teamwork I see every day between Newport News Shipbuilding and the Navy as we work together to build Kennedy with valuable first-of-class lessons from the Ford.â
