OUR SPRING
003. perfect
5:01 pm
"Fucking hell."
Normally, you'd have more shame, but given your current circumstances it was understandable for you to curse loudly in the middle of the hallway on your way home from the school library. All of this was so irritating, the rumours and all the attempted manipulation, both which, were from the exact same source; Kira Ryosuke.
It should be fine. That's what you've told yourself for a long time. But you've been corrected. Because rumour after rumour, it kept accumulating now it's consumed and become your school life, until your identity is once again established as one that only revolves around some guy who likes you.
"You better drop dead next time I see you."
"May I help you?" You pull yourself out of your livid trance, looking up from staring at your feet as you walk and realizing with horror that you say that right in front of someone else. What's even worse, is that you recognise who it was, possibly one of the worst people to unintentionally curse at. It's Chigiri Hyoma. Rising star of the jpop and jdrama industry, who also happens to be a member of one of your best friend's favourite band.
"I am so sorry. I swear it wasn't directed to you- A lot had been going on recently." You prayed, begging that he wasn't one of those celebrities who enjoyed tormenting regular people with their obsessive and toxic fanbases, or liked exploiting their fame to ruin others.
Despite being apprehensive of the social power he holds, Meguru was right every time he called Chigiri attractive. It was evident through photos, but they don't capture his beauty fully. There wasn't a blemish on his pale skin, his tied up hair seemed perfect, it was obvious people would die for his skin and hair care routine. Long eyelashes compliment soft features and his rose coloured eyes clouded with what seemed like concern.
Even though his features weren't inhumanely perfect or complied to the beauty standard to a T, everything just synergises together, curating his natural charm.
Visually, he embodies perfection.
"Ah I see. I understand." Just when you thought he couldn't look any better he smiles, teeth perfectly white and shiny, which were adorned with dimples. It made sense why he was an actor and idol, he pulls off school uniform and even makes it look fashionable, heck his school photo probably came out gorgeous too. "So, what happened?"
You were too busy admiring his visuals to realize you were going to reveal your current struggles to a total stranger. "Well it's just- wait, I don't even know you?"
"Neither do I. All the more better to open up to, no?"
He's kind of weird. No wonder why Meguru loves him so much.
Instead of addressing and responding to his statement, you take advantage of this opportunity, since he's always surrounded by fans. "Then, how do you deal with rumours? You're apart of that band egoism, right? You'd know a lot about this"
"Well. I'm not apart of the PR team, so I don't know the full details. But rumours don't have some sort of secret formula or trick to getting rid of them. Hence why most celebrities have a PR team."
If only you had one too.
"Are you the one everyone assumes is dating Kira? I'm guessing you're referring to all the gossip related to you too." Chigiri continues, seeming genuinely curious regarding your situation.
You nod, and barely process being dragged into a janitor's closet by him, the complete shock taking too long to register.
"Oi Chigiri, what're you doing?" Ending up in a janitor's closet with one of the most popular artists of your age was not expected.
"Dating rumours, you say?" He breaths out, dismissing your question, a chuckle soon rises in his throat. "We're not too different, no? I have the perfect solution for you."
"Which is?" Once again, he ignores your questions, slowly coming closer towards you, face close in proximity to yours.
"Date me."

“Like so, riduur…kat-tay-LEER da-RAH-soom.”
“Kat-tay-LIR—”
“Leer, think two ees in Basic. The letter’s a bit weird in Mando’a.” Senya shot Shae a rueful smile, and Mandalore the Avenger threw back her long red braid with a laugh, wispy strays forming an auburn halo about her head. “You’re doing great, riduur; it’s hard picking up a new language, especially when it doesn’t use the same grammatical cues as Zakuulan or Basic.”
“And you didn’t have an overbearing father forcing you to learn everything, Buir.” Arcann drawled from where he was underneath Shae’s speeder, his face striped with oil and a bit of grease, blue eyes bright over his smile. Senya couldn’t help smiling back, warm and happy, because her lone living child was so at peace with his rebirth, with this, with them…Hell, he was picking up Mando’a faster than anyone else on base, but then again, the Mandos had taken him in like a lost son, Shae particularly. Torian chuckled low and rich from his perch atop the speeder, working on the upper half of the engine while Arcann took care of the transmission, and Senya found herself happy to have a second son again, if in name only.
Torian Cadera and his wife, a former Togruta bounty hunter-turned-adopted Mando, had been mostly adopted by Shae, and while Chromi was out and about taking care of things, Torian had elected to help his newly adopted brother with the repairs that Shae had, quite frankly, gotten too old to do. Not that that had stopped her, of course, but Shae had allowed Arcann and Torian to take over, while Senya eased her out, swearing and muttering under her breath about being too old for this shit, etc, etc.
“No, that is true, but still, I should at least be able to say that phrase, Tyth knows you tell me it enough.”
“It’ll come with time and practice.” Senya flushed, just a little at Shae’s sweet, quiet smile, and she took her riduur’s hand, conscious of the fact that she stood almost a head taller than the other woman. Then there was her power in the Force…Senya still felt like the odd duck out, though Arcann had made himself useful enough to blend in admirably. But then, he and Thexan both had felt better with their fellow soldiers on the battlefield, rather than the cold confines of Zakuul’s palace. Vaylin too, though Senya had always been less sure of her youngest…but she shook those sad thoughts away, longing for her children, and knowing that at least they were at peace once more in the Force.
“So it will…How about we go find ourselves a bit of dinner? We’re old ladies now; we can’t skip meals.” Shae pulled a face at that, and Torian laughed, falling back a little at her expression.
“Admit it, Mandalore, you’re no orochick any longer.” She swiped at him playfully, and he grinned, cheeks dimpled and eyes crinkled shut, and Senya laughed, catching Shae’s hands and pulling her closer.
“Old my ass, Cadera, don’t make me swat you like your buir should have.” Shae ruffled his hair, though, grinning despite her protests, and let Senya drag her off, while Senya failed to hide her smile. “I see you smiling too, riduur.”
“Yes, well, it’s nice to listen to you…even if you’re a bit over the top.”
“Hey now, I’m downright boring for Mandalore; trust me, some of my predecessors weren’t that nice. But…eh, that’s old news. C’mon, let’s hit the cantina; that C2 droid found the best chef in the galaxy.” Senya chuckled at that as they took the elevator back up to the main deck of the base, protected by the heavy cliff overhang, with the rest of the Alliance stronghold carved into ancient bedrock. Odessen as a planet was relatively young, and life on the planet hadn’t progressed to sentient yet, which had made it perfect for the Alliance…and having been so young in the galactic record, it was also that rare planet that hadn’t been explored yet, hence the first come, first owned philosophy.
Not that their Commander had claimed the planet for herself…no, Ionial had taken care to file everything neatly, and for a Jedi Knight, that was a rare perk. Then again, she was married to Theron Shan…and as he was the main Operations manager to the whole of the Alliance, Senya had a feeling that paperwork was something that poor couple dealt with even in the marriage bed.
Certainly, she was perfectly fine shacking up with Shae in her old age; Mandalore had baggage, but so did she, and though they did have responsibilities…they could set them down for a time. Shae, however, nudged her out of her thoughts with a careful touch to her elbow, and Senya glanced down at her riduur, eyebrows raised…and followed Shae’s line of sight to one of the tables in the back room, empty but for a familiar figure in long graying braids, her slender hands wrapped around a mug of tea, her beautiful face pinched with weariness and sorrow.
“…That’s Satele…”
“So it is…Senya, love, how much to you know about the Grandmaster?” Shae murmured as they accepted their drinks, and Senya chewed her lip, reviewing everything she’d learned about the former leader of the Jedi in the last eight years.
“…I know that she was the Grandmaster, and though she still holds the title, she is no longer the speaker for the Jedi. I know that she helped train our Commander…and I know that she’s Theron’s mother.”
“…She’s a hell of a warrior, in the speaking halls and on the battlefield. I’ve gone up against her once, and out of respect, I’ll never do that again.” Shae replied softly, and to Senya’s surprise, the Mandalorian took her hand, guiding her to the room. “And out of respect, I think she needs a friend.” Senya glanced back up at Satele’s face, and even at this distance, Senya could see tears sliding down her cheeks.
“…You might be right about that. A moment…” She leaned over to the waitstaff who took their order, and hurriedly ordered a third meal of Alderaanian stew and fresh veggies, and Shae nodded approvingly. They made their way to the back room, and it was Shae, her eyes frank and kind, who slid into the booth opposite Satele’s seat, and gently clasped the Jedi’s hands. Senya joined her as well, her own long hands joining Shae’s, and that brought Satele’s eyes up slowly, tears streaming down her face, her pain so strong that Senya instinctively reached for the Force to help calm her. That seemed to help, just a little, and Satele took a deep, shuddering breath.
“…Can we ask what happened?” Shae asked gently, her tone as soft as Senya had ever heard it, and Satele gave a weary, wet laugh.
“…I tried to talk to my son, and utterly ruined things. Again.” She swallowed, with difficulty, but cleared her throat and took a shaky breath. “Theron…and I have a…well, complicated is too strong. We don’t have much of a relationship at all. I…when I got pregnant, I didn’t think about him, I didn’t think about being a mother…I was too worried about being found, about figuring out what I could do with him. My master, Ngani Zho, took him and raised him…I stayed for six weeks to nurse him until we’d found a formula that worked, but that was all. And I left him.” Satele’s voice broke at that, and both women slid around to hug her, letting her weep into their arms. Senya’s heart ached for her; she’d been raised with no attachments, to have no attachments, and no matter what the Jedi might say, that was something that damaged the very soul.
For all that she mourned her children, Senya was grateful that she’d been able to love them so fiercely. Not being able to care for her babies like that…it horrified her to her very core. One glance at Shae over Satele’s braids, and Mandalore’s eyes were shuttered, angry, and grieving too. I could hate the Jedi for what they’ve done to people…even the Sith cherish their children.
“I am such a horrible mother…” Satele was whispering now, and it was Senya who shook her head, voice low but fierce.
“You are no such thing. You are a woman who was forced to make a choice, with little regard to your own heart.”
“But…the Code…”
“Blast the Code.” Shae’s voice was as sharp as vibrosteel, and Satele flinched, just a little. “Sorry, but…Satele, you wouldn’t have made that choice if you’d been like me, would you?” Satele froze, and for the first time, Senya sensed someone just outside their door, listening…she closed her eyes, opening her mind, and to her shock, it was Theron. He was frozen on baited breath, his eyes wide, and Senya amplified the sound in that room, just a little, just enough…both Shans needed to hear this.
“…No. No, I wouldn’t have…if I’d been…normal…like him…I’d have kept him. If Malgus hadn’t been hunting me…I would have been overjoyed to be a mother…” Satele whispered, but it was enough; Senya heard a bitten off sob outside the door, and she reached behind her, grasping the younger man’s sleeve and gently tugging.
“Theron, you need to come in here.” She called softly, and he shook, but he obeyed her, watery golden eyes a match to his father’s, wide with worry and nerves…and it was Satele who watched him, tears still burning down her cheeks, who reached out for his hands.
“Theron…”
“…You really would have kept me?” His voice wavered, and Senya clasped his shoulder, willing all the love she could feel pouring from Satele into him, knowing he was only just Force sensitive enough to catch it.
“Yes. Yes, I swear, I would have…I would have needed Master Zho to help, because I was…I had no idea what I was doing…but I would have brought you home and to hell with anyone else.” She whispered, and he closed his eyes, lips twisting in pain. “Theron, sweetheart, I’m so sorry…”
“I’m sorry for what I said…I’m sorry, Mama…” He whispered, and Shae hopped up out of the way to let mother and son embrace tightly, both of them sobbing as the dams broke between them. Senya managed to order a fourth meal too, and when they all arrived, she laid them out neatly. Soon, Theron and Satele had calmed enough to sit back down, this time opposite one another with Senya sharing the seat with Theron, Shae on Satele’s side.
“I know you two are probably exhausted, but you need to eat.” She declared, and Theron’s lips curled up in a half-smile, used to Senya’s Mom skill by now, while Satele managed a wan smile and Shae openly grinned.
“Thank you, Senya, Shae…”
“Yeah, thank you…I’m so sorry I yelled, Mom…” Satele only shook her head, eyes softer now, and clasped his hand.
“You were right to yell about that. I never…” She paused, took a deep breath, and continued. “I should have talked to you about all of this…really, I just should have talked to you. I know you felt like the dirty secret for years…and understandably so. I treated you as such, and Jace…” Theron sighed, wincing, and she nodded. “I owe you a lifetime of apologies.”
“…No, just the one is good, Mom. You did give me to Zho, and without him, I would have…well. He explained a lot, especially when I flunked out of the temple; he could have told me to bug off, but he kept in touch, helped me get into the SIS, even went with me to get my implants in. And he never faltered when I asked if you loved me; he always said yes, looking me dead in the eyes. I…didn’t always believe him, but he always said yes.” Satele smiled, just a little, and it was Shae who spoke up, having stayed quiet through most of it all, uncharacteristically so.
“He sounds like a good guy…I’m guessin’ he’s gone to the Force, isn’t he.” Both Satele and Theron nodded, twin expressions of pain marking their faces, and Senya closed her eyes, pulling a well of comfort and care from her core and filling the room with it. She had always been a master at controlling her emotions, in no small part because she was so strong with her empathy, and Satele gave her a fragile smile, so shy and tiny, that Senya couldn’t help smiling back.
“Thank you, Senya…and yes, he is. But he went down in battle, as he wanted, protecting his boy.” Theron was picking at his steak now, his jaw tight, but he heaved a sigh.
“Yeah, he did…it…it was hell watching him die in front of me. But I wouldn’t want him to go any other way; whatever else happened, he was a warrior, and he didn’t let any fight go past him without taking a swipe. But he’s at peace now…kinda wish he’d visited, but…I figure I’m doing a good job if he isn’t coming back.”
“Or you two didn’t need me until now.” The voice of an old man, far older than Satele or Shae, even, filled the glowing spot now hovering next to the table, and Ngani Zho, glowing blue and smiling faintly, stepped from the shadows, giving Theron a gentle cuff on the ear, and tweaking Satele’s nose. Both made the Shans break into startled laughter, and their Master smiled fully this time, leaving Shae and Senya speechless. Force ghosts were…a rarity on Zakuul, if at all; Senya had sensed Darth Marr’s spirit on Odessen, alongside Satele at times, but only just, and never had she sensed Thexan or Vaylin…Shae looked almost frightened, and Senya clutched her hand, broadcasting calm.
“So, you two finally talked it over…about damn time.”
“Master Zho…”
“Don’t you give me that, it’s been long enough. Take your time, feel things out, but let the Code go, Satele. At this point, it matters, but not more than your boy…and Theron, so help me if you don’t cut out the swearing—”
“Look, I’m a leader now, I’m gonna swear a lot more—”
“I will appear in front of your wife and complain to her.” Theron froze, and Zho crossed his arms, looking as smug as a Force apparition could. “With her old master in tow.”
“…Orgus passed on.”
“Wanna take that bet, son?” Another crusty old man’s voice sounded, and the former Jedi Orgus, short-haired and taller than Zho, leaned over the other ghost’s shoulder. Theron blanched, while Satele burst into relieved laughter, leaning back and reaching over Shae’s shoulder to give the other Jedi a brush of her fingers. He chuckled and squeezed her hand before vanishing, and Zho smiled down at her.
“Now then, any more complaints I should know about?”
“No, thank you, Master Zho…and thank you for coming to see us.” Satele murmured, and he leaned over to kiss her forehead, his eyes calm and warm, then he leaned over to do the same to Theron, who hugged the old man tight, despite their bickering.
“…Tasiele would have been proud of you both. She loved you so fiercely, Satele, and Theron…your grandmother would have fought tooth and nail to bring you into the Temple from the start…But she left us far too soon. It’s hard, losing your soulmate…” He gave them both a wan smile, Satele’s mouth open in shock, Theron’s eyes wide and his jaw hanging slack, and Zho chuckled. “Never did really care for the Council’s strict policies…maybe that’s why we had a secret marriage, and why when you were born, Satele, we kept things quiet. Kinda blaming Revan and Bastila for starting a line of rulebreakers…”
“Father…” Zho gave a warm chuckle, and kissed his daughter’s brow, then his grandson’s, and vanished once more, his revelation leaving both Shans speechless, while Senya and Shae made to get up and back out. Satele came her senses, and shook her head, taking a deep breath. “Shae? Senya? Please, don’t go…I’m sure that was…absolutely bizarre for you both, but please, stay…” They shared a look, and at Shae’s quiet nod, sat back down; Senya was on firmer ground here, if only just, but Shae looked…spooked, for lack of a better word.
“…So, I’m guessing you never knew…?” Shae murmured, and Satele shook her head, eyes closed.
“I knew my father was a fellow knight, but…my mother died when I was a child, and I was already with Zho as his padawan. He was always just Master to me, but kinder, gentler…at the same time, stricter. Now I understand why…” Theron gave a huff of a laugh, and Satele cracked a smile at him.
“It all makes sense now…Force, it must have killed him to keep that secret to the grave…” Theron murmured, and Satele squeezed his hand.
“I think that’s really why he came back…to prove that we had more than just a shared Master…that there’s always time to fix things.” Theron smiled at that, really smiled, and Senya was struck by just how much like his mother he looked in that moment. He took after his father in eyes and coloring, but his smile was all his mother’s, with a touch of Zho in there in the quirk of his lips.
“Yeah, there is…” He leaned up, kissing her on the forehead, and sighed. “But duty, unfortunately, owns my sorry ass, and I need to go get things in order. Love you, Mama…make this a…thing? Maybe tomorrow?” He asked, sounding so unsure of himself, and Satele kissed his forehead back, both hands cupping his face.
“I love you too, Theron. Go, and call if you need any help at all.” He shot her a weak grin, and sped back off to work, while Satele slumped back into the cushions with a weak laugh. “…You both are looking at me like I’m crazy.”
“Nah, just figured you were overwhelmed.” Some of Shae’s easy-going nature had returned, and she motioned for the Jedi to keep eating. “Eat up, no point in wasting good food.” Satele obeyed, and by the time the three women had finished their plates, Senya gathering up all four dishes, Shae was gently rubbing Satele’s shoulders, and Senya knew that look in Mandalore’s eye.
They’d talked it over extensively over the last six months they’d been together; if there was anyone they might wish to add as a third lover…Satele was first on the list for both of them, and Senya could already feel the beginnings of a dyad between herself and Satele, which, had she not taken the time to research it on the Holonet…
“…thank you both. Sincerely. I…I thought for sure it was all over, that…that Theron would never speak to me again…” Satele murmured, and Senya cuddled up to her other side, rubbing her upper back while the Jedi leaned into them both, melting a little from the gentle touches.
“He’d already came back in the short time we were there…” Senya murmured, and Satele gave her a weak smile, gray-blue eyes weary but relaxed.
“Still. Thank you. For listening. For feeding us…and for not running away screaming at the ghosts.”
“…It was creepy as fuck, but you’re cute enough to make us stay.” Shae sighed out, and Satele burst into laughter, cackling a little as Senya hid a smile. “What?!”
“Oh Force, Shae, I know we were enemies once, but you always know how to make a woman laugh.” Shae grinned at that, looking smug, and Senya just chuckled.
“It’s a strong skillset of hers…just like my empathy is mine. Satele…I can feel the loneliness rolling off of you in waves. It’s been with you for years…” She calmed down, sighing a little, and Senya probed the tentative dyad with careful touches, smiling as Satele closed her eyes and probed back, understanding and a little joy warming between them.
“…so it has. So it has. Your empathy…small wonder you walled yourself off, Senya…” Satele’s eyes were calmer now, and she glanced at Shae, making sure that the lone non-Force user was also in the conversation. “You two…I was surprised to see you two together, but at the same time, I was happy for you…” She trailed off, looking vulnerable now, and it was Shae who spoke up again, this time her voice softer, that familiar rasp Senya’s favorite sound in the world.
“Well, if you wanna give it a shot, riduur, we’d love to have you in the middle. There’s something already with Senya and you, right?”
“How…did you know…?”
“I might not have the Force, but I can read bodies almost as well. And Senya said she’d sensed something the first time she’d met you, a…dayd, right?”
“Dyad, but close enough. A bond, between two souls through the Force. It’s rare…but it’s strong.” Satele bit her lip, worrying at it, and Shae gently took her hand.
“Riduur. Satele. There’s been a bond between us too, we were both just…too indoctrined by other bullshit at the time to see it.” Those blue, blue eyes, warm despite all the storms they’d weathered, watched both her riduur…and her riduur-to-be with a calmness that not even Senya could call up. “I lost my daughters…you lost your whole family. Senya lost everyone but Arcann, and for a time, she’d lost him too. We lost our lovers, and in time, discovered that those weren’t what our hearts had longed for. I had a long time to figure my heart out…have you?” Satele seemed to think on it for a long, long time, dipping her head to stare at her tea; neither Senya nor Shae were impatient, though, holding her hands, Senya radiating love through the bond, Shae’s eyes never leaving Satele’s face.
When those eyes lifted again, though, both women were shocked to see that the storm clouds in Satele’s eyes had parted, leaving sky blue irises, with a hint of gold glimmering in the centers. A warm smile, rich and bright and so lovely it made Senya’s heart ache to see it, and she leaned in, kissing first Shae, then Senya full on the lips, pulling them into her arms.
“…I have. I found where I belong.” Shae grinned, bright and fierce, and Senya laughed, happy as joy from deep within welled up and overflowed, Satele’s power second only to her daughter-in-law’s.
“Good. ‘Bout damn time. C’mon, you two…let’s go let the brats know.”
“Arcann will be thrilled.”
“Torian’ll probably just call me a gold digger, the little shit.”
“…oh crap.” Senya paused as Satele froze, her arm over the Jedi’s shoulder while Satele’s arms were around their waists, and she touched Satele’s cheek, worried.
“Love, what’s wrong?”
“…Theron’s going to kill me.”
“Nah, probably just bitch about it. Hey…” Both of them stared as Shae got a wicked grin on her face, and suddenly, Senya understood exactly how Hylo felt whenever Gault opened his big fat mouth. “We could stage a strip Pazaak tourney. Let the kid really understand what trauma is.”
“Oh Force, Shae, no.”
“…I have a better idea.” Satele’s voice was smug, and she pulled out an old datapad, pulling up a file that crackled for a moment before clearing, revealing a tall man with long dark hair in a half-pony tail, his robes a bit disheveled.
“Is this thing on?”

Hi! I would like to request a match-up! Please :D
I uh… am not sure how to describe myself but I think I have the “guess I’ll die” ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ vibe, calm during chaos and too lazy to go out and socialize. I’m also an INTP-A, very shy with strangers and will not go out of my way to talk to them first. But I love pulling pranks on close friends and family, and enjoy trolling them so much. I love spicy food but also cannot live without chocolates! I’m also very awkward at romancing, and will run away if someone starts to flirt with me because I get shy easily and will become red as tomato. PDA is a no-no and I might faint if someone kiss me in public. Thank you! :D
Hello (again?)! I’m truly sorry if I had already requested a match-up before because I have a feeling that I probably forgot to mention that I wanted a match-up with ikesen warlords. So you can totally ignore this if you want to ‘cause I won’t mind. You see, I’m 22 years old, very clumsy (like always tripping on nothing, my backpack got stucked between double door or I accidentally hit my head on the same spot more than few times) and I hate that part of myself so much. But I’m not stupid though because I can memorize difficult math and chemical formula, dates of historical events and stuff that I read from books easily, and that’s why my friends call me ‘absent-minded professor’. Very shy and withdrawn with strangers but once I’m comfortable with them, be prepared to get pranked and teased by me (mostly childish pranks). Lastly, I’m a short girl (barely 155cm) and got teased with that regularly (not that I mind though I don’t really care). So, thank you and have a nice day!
Hey there, love! Thank you so much for the request! I’m sorry I took so long! Hehe, I definitely didn’t want to ignore your second request lol, I enjoyed reading the extra info. I hope you enjoy and have a good day! <3
So I match you with……………….. Masamune
When you first arrive, you are super quiet. You are super shy, and your definitely not going to go out of your way to talk to anyone first. Although in saying that, no one suspected you of being a spy or an assassin in the first place. You were just way too smol and cute. Even Hideyoshi’s death glares didn’t last very long. Luckily for you the Oda forces are a chatty bunch, so you definitely don’t have to worry about not going out of your way to talk first. One person, in particular, seemed to take a special liking to your cute small self. And that would be non-other than our favorite pirate chef, Masamune. Masamune would pester you 24/7, chatting and joking with you. He knew you seemed like a fun lass, so he was determined to break past your shy layer
Masmuse found your clumsiness most amusing, he and Mitsuhide would often take advantage of Mitsunari’s clumsiness, but since finding out you to were just as clumsy. You had become their new target. They couldn’t help but laugh when you fall over your own two feet or if you accidentally slam your own hair into the sliding door.
You had gotten tired of their content giggling at your expense, so you decided to confront them about it. One day after you had accidentally walked into one of the pillars, you could hear Masamune chuckle at the clumsy lass. You walked towards him to start scolding him when all of a sudden, you fell over a stick in the middle of the hallway. He caught you perfectly in his big strong arms, and to say you were as red as a tomato would be an understatement. The one-eyed dragon couldn’t help but smirk at the red lass in his arms and make some flirty comment. You swear you died from embarrassment at that moment. You covered your face with your hands still in Masa’s arms. He then gently peeled your hands off your face and gave you a kiss. You looked up at him, and you were too shocked for words. You managed to mutter out, “you can’t just go around kissing people like that.” You felt like running away or meting in a puddle from shyness. Classic Masamune just shrugged, gave you his handsome grin, and said: “You’re not some random person kitten, you’re a cute girl who fell into my arms.” And as if things couldn’t get any worse for you at that moment, sneki boi made an appearance. You were teased like mad the rest of that afternoon. Surprisingly, you didn’t die from heatstroke at how hot and red your cheeks were.
On another separate day, you hit your head against the same pillar. Darn, why is it always that same pillar. You hit it pretty bad this time and landed up, giving yourself a headache. And like clockwork Masamune appeared out of thin air. He was about to tease his clumsy kitten for walking into the same pillar twice when he saw the way you held your head. He peered into your eyes and then promptly threw you over his shoulder. The more you argued and complained, the more he enjoyed carrying you through the hallways. He set you down of your futon and peeled your hand away from your head. Jip, there was definitely a big red bump forming. He left for a brief moment coming back with some tea for the pain and inflammation as well as a cold cloth.
He placed the towel on your head and held it there with one hand while his other twirled a strand of hair between his fingers. He loved that flushed look on your face as you blushed. After your head felt a bit better, he made the two of you some more tea. He’s never really been in your room before. He started looking around and noted that you had a big stack of books. He went to page through them when he realized they were all complex books regarding different topics. He looked back and you and asked if you couldn’t understand the concepts and topics discussed in the books. You nodded, saying you had a really good memory, and you loved to learn new things. Masa couldn’t help but give you the biggest smile. “So, you are basically just the female version of Mitsunari.” The two of you giggled, and you had told him about how your friend used to call you the absent-minded professor. The rest of the afternoon, the two of you spent chatting and getting to know each other.
You have always been too lazy to socialize, so it would always be Masamune who would drag you along on his latest fun adventures. At first, you really weren’t keen, you would much rather have lazed around the palace reading. Masa would take you everywhere, from hills and countrysides, to markets and teahouses. He found out there that you really enjoyed sweets.
He loved to spoil his little kitten and would bring you sweet treats whenever the two of you would hang out or have tea together. You had never tasted such amazing confectionaries before, and nothing could compete with Masa homemade treats in particular. He will definitely go the extra mile to make all your favorite dishes. He even managed to make a few modern-day dishes perfectly for you just based on your descriptions of them
Masamune discover that you love pranks and trolling people. And TBH’ Trolling people’ is Masa’s middle name. The two of your loved to troll the mama bear in particular. He was such an easy target, after all. The two of you were definitely giving the poor man grey hair. You were most definitely not above pranking Masamune. You would even join in on the bets Mitsuhide and Nobunaga had going to see who could trick the One-eyed dragon into drinking alcohol first. This was your favorite game to play at banquets. But at one of the banquets, your prank backfired on you; especially, when drunk Masamune grabbed you and hugged you thinking you were a soft fluffy pillow. He held on to you with a lock grip. You pleaded the Oda forces for help, but all of them just shook their head while laughing and retiring to their own beds for the night. Hideyoshi was kind enough to set up a futon for the two of you in the banquet hall. But that’s as much as he was going to help you with. He couldn’t help but wave you goodnight with a bright smile, at divine payback for all the grey hairs the two of you had given him. The two of you spent the night in the banquet hall.
The next morning you were so freaken embarrassment. You were as red as a tomato at the thought of spending the night in Masamune’s muscular arms. You stared at his sleeping face trying to come up with a getaway plan before he woke up. That was until his ocean blue eye open to stare directly into your eyes. Once he realized what had happened, he groaned, hiding his face in a pillow. You caught a rare glimpse of a very embarrassed Masamune. The more he told you to forget, the more you laughed and said, “NEVER’. Cue tickle fight. He ticked you telling you he would only stop if you forgot everything that you had seen. Between your laughs, you managed to tease him about his cute little blush. He knew the only way left for you to agree to forget was to kiss you. Needless to say, at this point in the game, you actually now had a massive crush on him. When the kiss didn’t work, he looked you in the eyes and asked you what would make you forget how uncool he was, and all you said in return was, “I will never forget, cause how can I forget the smallest details of the one I love.”
Masa was shook you loved him. WAIT WHAT. You blushed like crazy, you never expected that statement to slip out much less Masas reaction once he had processed what you had said. He thought that it had been a one-sided love this whole time and that you liked someone else. He gave you the biggest brightest smile and then tackled you to the ground, kissing you all over your face. He was so happy that you loved him too. He loved this clumsy kitten in his arm, and at that moment, he felt like the happiest man alive.
Masa loved showing off his lass, and you hated being shown off. We all know Masa is a very touchy-feely person. He loves to kiss and hug you, whether its in private or out in the open. He loves to shower you with unconditional love. You had a few talks about your dislikes of PDA, and both of you decided to meet each other halfway with a compromise. He was allowed to hold your hand and only give you a small peck on the cheek cause more than that will have you melting on the market floor into a puddle. Although Masa can also be sneaky and will sometime risk a kiss on the lip just to see your beautiful blush. When he does this, you would just smack him lightly on the chest, while shaking your head, trying to recompose yourself from the sneak attack.
The two of you are the cutest couple. You guys are constantly teasing and playing pranks on all of your Oda friends. He honestly loves you so much. He loves the fact that you had seen him at his worst and yet still love you. And you love this big cat so much. You love how he has brought you out of your shell and shown you the world. Your favorite thing to do is cuddle and snuggle together in private. You love nothing more than just lazing around the house with Masa. He loves it when the two of you just lay on the futon together with your head resting on his chest while he caresses your beautiful face and gently rubs your back.
Other potential matches……………….Mitsuhide O.O
I hope you enjoyed it! @cherrydangome

Night World by L.J.Smith - Review/Overview
So 2 weeks ago I began a journey to reread one of my most favourite series that I hadn’t read for upwards of 8 years. It was an emotional rollercoaster, between some truly emotional moments and WTF moments, huge plot twists and excited memories. I enjoyed the experience, but let me tell you my reading preferences have changed hugely since I was a preteen and I can no longer call it a favourite, because the entire series is based on insta-love and is written just like you would expect a teen vampire romance written in the 90s. Before scaring you off, let me tell you what it’s about. Every story is about unlikely soulmates, usually between a human and a Night World citizen. The Night World contains vampires, witches, werewolves, and shapeshifters, and it’s forbidden that humans know about it, and it’s forbidden that a Night World citizen falls in love with a human. Although set in the same world and characters appearing multiple times throughout, each book is a standalone and simply follows a formula. If you loved the vampire books of the past couple decades and also insta-love and soulmates, then please check out the series. I have an overview/review of each below.
We begin with SECRET VAMPIRE. Poppy has been diagnosed with cancer and is given only months to live. Her best friend, the mysterious James, says that he can save her, but at what cost? This is a particularly brutal start to a series, dealing with death and grief and huge life changing decisions, but it really serves to drag you into the story and make you care about the characters from the start. It’s very much written as a teen vampire romance though, with the convenient plot happenings and unnecessary drama. It sets the tone for the rest of the series so if you enjoy this you’ll probably love all the books.
Next is DAUGHTERS OF DARKNESS, which follows Mary-Lynnette as she falls headfirst into a mystery of Night World Proportions. Just what were the new girls in town burying in their aunt’s garden? And where has the old woman gone? If you liked Ash in the first book, you’ll be happy to see him again here, this time intent on dragging his sisters back to the enclave from which they escaped. This one used to be my favourite, for the soulmate aspect and the big reveal (not as big or intense to 21 y/o me as 12 y/o me I must say) but somehow not the murder mystery plot, which I remembered nothing about and so was completely immersed in. I also realised around this point that insta-love doesn’t do it for me anymore, and I would have rathered it be a 400 page slow burn than a 200 page insta-love rushed kinda deal. The ending was very sweet so I forgave it for the time period it was written in.
Third in the series was ENCHANTRESS, a story about witchcraft and fighting over a boy. Thea has found her soulmate in a human, but her cousin Blaise has set her sights on him too. Thea must compete with Blaise to save her soulmate, because not only does Blaise play with boys until they break, but love between a human and a Night World citizen is punishable by death. I’m personally not a fan of these sorts of stories, but the sisterly bond between Thea and Blaise as well as the introduction of the witches was interesting enough to tide me through, and I was rewarded with a nice ending.
Volume 2 begins with DARK ANGEL. After Gillian drowns in the dead of winter, she is brought back by Angel, who promises to make her popular and help her get the guy. But who is Angel really, and what does he want from Gillian? As someone who adores flawed protagonists, the selfish, shallow, and hopelessly naive Gillian was a great one. She makes terrible decisions and ignores all the red flags that we as readers can see easily, which is frustrating and great to read about. I loved this witchy story far more than the last, and I really wanted more like it, with lost witches and how they find their way back.
THE CHOSEN is about vampire slave trafficking, so your mileage may vary. Rashel is a bitter and vengeful vampire hunter, sworn to kill them all after witnessing the deaths of her mother and best friend at just 5 years old. When girls start to go missing, Rachel must investigate and stop whoever is taking them, even if it means going up against the fearsome vampire Quinn. This book opens up with the double murder, and then Rachel being targeted for another, which definitely leaves her traumatised. That being said, she is 17 when the main story happens, and has some cringe moments (such as “this kitten has claws” which had me physically put the book down to cringe over it.) The insta love was getting tedious at this point (seriously they meet like 3 times and most of that is spent with her trying to kill him) so when the dramatic plot twist happened I was relieved for some real drama, and drama it was let me tell you. I once again had to put the book down and just gape in shock, for I had remembered none of it. A good read.
SOULMATE, meanwhile, had me in great emotional pain. We follow Hannah, who has been finding notes in her own handwriting telling her she will be dead before she is 17, that she must remembered something important, and that He is coming. Using hypnotherapy, she begins to unravel her past lives and the mystery that runs through all of them regarding her soulmate Thierry, a Lord of the Night World, who she is inexplicably afraid of in her memories. All I can comment here is the reincarnation, star crossed lovers, and soulmates, all mixed into one big story nearly did me in. Also, the characters from the previous books make an appearance, which is always exciting.
This is where we get an overarching plot that never got completed. All you need to know is that there’s a prophesy predicting the apocalypse and there are 4 Wild Powers who are fated to stop it but only if all 4 are together.
HUNTRESS kicks off with Jez Redfern discovering she is a vampire/human hybrid and leaving her vampire gang to go live with her human family. She joins Circle Daybreak and becomes a vampire hunter, but is called back into the Night World when her old second in command, Morgead, demands a position on the Council in exchange for the first Wild Power. She is tasked with uncovering the identity of the person before the Night World Council does, and bringing them into Circle Daybreak alive. The characters in this one aren’t very interesting, but it’s not a problem because the plot goes by super quickly and the mystery keeps the story afloat. If you love a big reveal then this is a good book for it.
BLACK DAWN is about slavery and socks. When Sylvia turns up in the dead of night with news that her boyfriend, Maggie’s brother, has gone missing in a climbing accident and is presumed dead, Maggie feels something isn’t quite right with the story, and in the process of trying to find out the truth she is taken by slavers. She must now survive the journey into the dark kingdom hidden in the mountains, and find the way out, told to her in a strange dream... I found the plot a bit convenient and a bit cliche at times, which is only to be expected from this series at this point. The only thing that truly surprised me was the “The Deliverer!” scene, which you will know immediately when you come to it. Genuinely I couldn’t quite grasp what was happening and so I had no reaction to it but looking back that was bizarre and made zero sense in the context of the book, which until that point was a survival story. An odd one, but not bad until that point.
The final book, but not the end of the story, is WITCHLIGHT. Keller is a shapeshifter tasked with protecting an unknowing Wild Power, delivering her to her bonding ceremony to the prince of shapeshifters, and therefore ensuring a treaty between the witches and the shapeshifters in the coming war. The catch is that the prince is Keller’s soulmate and Iliana, the Wild Power, refuses to accept that she is magical. This was a weird one for a different reason and that reason has scales. Keller seemed annoying at first and so did Iliana, but that was quickly overtaken by the DRAGON?! plotline. My notes on this were very sweary and confused. I liked the history lesson we get on the history of shapeshifters - it seems to be a parallel to colonialism and slavery, and the guilt we feel knowing our ancestors did that to people. On a less serious note, for someone so sharp and strategic, Keller sure is dumb when it comes to her feelings. She’s part of Circle Daybreak and yet doesn’t recognise the soulmate bond when it comes to her and I was frustrated. The fallout of her realising the truth was painful and real, very lovely but in a sad way. The showdown was super exciting and the ending I loved. There was a lot of character development too.
I highly recommend checking this series out. It’s not expensive to buy and is a fun and easy read.

A Double Life
Chapter 2
A self-indulgent Daniel Ricciardo fic.
Summary: Returning to old passions results in the start of chaos and living a double life. We say we hate chaos, but the thrill is unlike anything else.
Words: 2,236
Part 1 // Masterlist
Formula 3 was incredible, one of, if not the best years of your little life so far. You got to visit so many cities that you hadn’t been to before and you met so many people. Especially with the tracks overlapping with F2 and F1, you could chat to, learn from and in some cases, build friendships with people in the leagues above. It did also help that Lewis would pop in to see you every now and again, check up on things and introduce you to those he thought might stand you in good sted. Either way, you felt as though you gained two new families that year; one in academia within your research group, and one within the world of racing.
Your confirmation paper was accepted, critiqued and praised, meaning you had done everything you needed to progress in your PhD. You were relieved at being able to produce something of worth whilst living both of your lives with full intensity.
All too soon the season ended and you had achieved more than anyone could have predicted. Like a duck to water – albeit a sleep deprived duck - you had successfully readjusted to racing, finishing a staggering 3rd in your rookie year. You were so proud. You’d been balancing the move into your second year in your doctoral programme with racing and you were starting to see the results of your pre-race training. That, combined with your work ethic and results from this season, you could move up into Formula 2, having signed a contract with ART Grand Prix in August.
After the last 12 months, you felt as though you had mastered the required routine for balancing your ‘two lives’ as you call it. Coming into the long break between seasons you didn’t want to lose that balance, but also wanted to give yourself a break from the long days you were accustomed to. Who knows, maybe you could go for lunch with friends, after all you can be somewhat laxer on your diet now. A real social life sounded divine, yet somewhat terrifying.
You figured you were afraid that if you loosened your grip on your routine, you’d struggle even more with your move to formula 2. Comparing the two championships, formula two had significantly more traveling involved, with tracks from the middle east being included. Where the season was eight rounds between May and September for Formula 3, Formula 2 had 12 rounds between March and December. Formula 2 would potentially interfere with more of your lab work and conferences you attended. Could you handle an increase in workload and training? Would it be easier if you maintained your somewhat unhealthly work schedule?
You were already a little more intense than some of the other F3 drivers, with regards to diet and training routines, you knew that, but Lewis had always pushed you to be better, work smarter. You don’t improve without pushing yourself, why limit that to just the track?
With the season coming to an end, it meant that season one of the Stewart show, one of Lewis’ many nicknames for it, would be airing soon. The camera crew were your one link between life on and off track, they saw it all and now the world would be able to as well. You were excited to see people’s reactions, but also concerned about how things might change as a result. Would drivers take you less seriously? Would people from your lab watch it and view you differently?
You had been talking through these thoughts and worries with Lewis as you met for a ‘detox weekend’ in London at his flat. He wanted to celebrate your fantastic season and pray over the year ahead without any distractions and to give you a break from work. There was a movie playing in the background but you were far more interested in hearing about the team shuffles and how he thought the season was going to play out in F1. You wanted to know everything: who he thought would shine, who he thought might struggle and which teams he thought would step up. The resulting strategy discussions would help you in ways you couldn’t imagine as you moved up the leagues.
Lewis always found ways to teach you something whenever you were together, but he also made a point of turning drivers' mode off and connecting with you on a personal level as well, even if he had been your mentor for over a year. Your friendship continued to blossom; you were more like family than friends now. You knew each other well enough to tease each other over the gossip surrounding them and could share secrets with one another and trust them to keep it. Lewis would tell you stories about his niece and nephew – who insisted on calling you auntie Rachel – that would have you snorting and clapping like a seal, or about stupid things he’d seen in town on a night out. You would share stories from the lab, who’d fucked up what experiment, which couples had emerged recently and what you had been working on. However, what Lewis loved to hear more than anything, purely so he could tease you, was any gossip from your love life, or more accurately, the lack of it. He would tease you about not following the other boys and dating someone from the circuit, someone’s brother or cousin, ‘get your flirt on’ he would always say.
Tonight, Lewis was dragging you hard, saying he would set you up with one of the F1 lads if only you would admit which one you thought was the cutest. Anyone with a pair of eyes knew those boys were pretty jaw-dropping, I mean what else did anyone expect from a bunch of athletes. However, there wasn’t a hope in hell that you would admit to Lewis who you had a small celeb crush on, not that there was anyone. Definitely not.
“Won’t be long until you’re up in F1 with me you know.” Lewis announced out of nowhere, seemingly dropping the topic of ‘hot F1 drivers’
“I’m sorry what?”
“If you keep doing what you’re doing; working hard and getting these kinds of results, I see no reason why they wouldn’t find a seat for you in F1.”
“Oh.” You were shocked.
Yes, you wanted to drive in F1, who didn’t, but you knew it was a hard task to get a seat and you didn’t have anywhere near as much experience as some of the other drivers in F2 who would be pushing to move up. “I’m not so sure,” you started, “as long as I’m alive, driving and challenging myself, I’m happy.”
“Sure but I’d love to have you in F1, race against my own little sister.” You could hear the sincerity in his voice.
“Cute, till I beat you, then you’ll just be sulking” You stuck your tongue out at him.
“Nah but for reals, it’ll make it super easier to tell which of the boys you’re crushing on.” He smirked back at you.
“Oh piss off.”
---
Lewis decided that once you had settled into the season a bit you should start coming to the media days as his guest to get a feel for things, still adamant that you would be up there soon. Obviously, you agreed, wanting as much experience as you could afford to get, regardless of where you ended up racing. Before you knew it, a permanent VIP pass had been organised, allowing you to go to any grand prix you wished.
You loved watching the races, especially from the pits. It made your hunger to improve and move up stronger than it ever was. Well that, and it meant you could chat to some of the drivers you knew.
Having met them last year, you occasionally played esports with Max Verstappen and Lando Norris and so knew them relatively well and so would always chat to them over race weekends. You were so thrilled to be back and settled into the new season that you couldn’t help but have a laugh when you were catching up with everyone. Media days were some of your favourites as everyone was usually in good spirits and this time, unbeknown to you, you were getting far more involved than ever before.
Whilst you were pally with a few of the drivers, you were yet to meet them all, and you were looking forward to meeting a certain jokester more than others. Once Lewis had figured this out, he had teased you relentlessly, it was all over for you. Unfortunately, he was only gorgeous until he opened his mouth.
“Here to scout the boys out?” Ricciardo had spotted you wandering around the paddock earlier and finally cornered you outside the Mercedes hub.
“Oh yeah, got to see who my competitions gonna be.” You teased back.
“The WAGs usually meet in the coffee parlour over there then.” Excuse me?
“Come again?”
“The wives and girlfriends, your competition?”
You could only shake your head. Of course, he assumed that you in the team merch, guest of Lewis Hamilton, were here only with the aim of getting a boyfriend. Oh no, when you said you were scouting competition, you meant competition for a seat.
Almost on cue, Lewis came wandering around and started laughing at the sight of you.
“Don’t lock your jaw sugarsnap” Lewis chuckled, using his nickname for you. The tension and irritation clear on your face. He knew exactly who had caused it given the group you were with. “Ricciardo what did you say?”
“Why me? And ‘sugarsnap’?” Ricciardo quizzed? “You already a WAG, doll?” He asked turning back to you
Your jaw tensed again; you couldn’t really blame him for not knowing you but the assumptions still hurt. Though you also shouldn’t have assumed that he watched the lower leagues, nor even heard of your show.
“Yeah, I know you, so what did you say and why are you calling her a WAG?” Lewis was both amused and concerned, it was a strange look.
“Told her which canteen the WAGs usually go to but I’m guessing she already knows if she’s your guest, ay?” Ricciardo winked at you.
“Oh, that’ll do it. I’m her mentor and self-imposed older brother so no she’s no WAG.” Lewis’ voice was stern but still held a small hint of humour. He then turned to you, a grin spreading across his face.
“Suit up sugarsnap – you've got a hot lap to do.”
“Really?” The excitement of the day returned at that.
“Yup and you’re driving me round, step to it.”
You ran back to your changing area squealing with excitement. You headed off so fast you missed the shocked look on Ricciardo’s face.
“She’s driving?”
“Mentor hot laps – a new Mercedes segment.”
“She’s a driver?”
“A damn good one – you'd know that if you checked any of the results from F2.”
“I do check!”
“Stewart? Placed 3rd in F3 last year?” Ricciardo was nodding, he knew that name, saw the results from last years F3 season too. “Yeah, she’s Rachel Stewart.”
With that, Lewis headed to the garage to meet you.
You climbed into your GT-R, Lewis clambering into the passenger side, repeatedly commenting on how weird it felt given he was usually the one driving these laps. You could already see the joy on your media teams face, the camera catching this bickering and knowing full well how well received this sort of banter would be with fans.
“You driven one of these before?” Lewis queried.
“Nope.” You replied, popping the ‘p’, “that an issue Lew?”
“Adds to the adventure. Don’t go above seventy on a corner or we’ll roll.” Fun, but something to learn.
“Rollings fun.” You sassed back.
“Not your car Stewie.” Another nickname.
“Roger that.”
With a shared laugh, you were off on your lap.
The mentor hotlaps segment had come about with Mercedes deciding that they wanted to start highlighting the impact a mentor could have, both on and off the track, and so were filming various challenges and fun tasks for their social media. They could showcase both mature and successful drivers, as well as the upcoming drivers they hoped would lead the next generation.
You knew your lap was being filmed and so steered clear from bad language and uber personal topics but you laughed, chatted and teased your way round the hot lap, Lewis booing when you wouldn’t steal a second lap. As you climbed out you reminded Lewis that your name didn’t carry quite as much weight as his. Obviously, he couldn’t help but comment on how it wouldn’t be long till yours carried the same.
Walking back towards your cool room several members of the Mercedes team congratulated you saying your lap was both impressive and hilarious. People seemed to love seeing the familial relationship you had developed with the five-time world champion. No one was quite as happy as Lewis’ press manager, quietly commenting how easy this would be to put out.
“Not bad at all doll.” An Australian accent called out as you left the main crowd in the garage.
Smirking up to the driver, one you may have had a crush on until he opened his mouth to speak earlier, you decided to play him at his own game.
“Thanks. Say Ricciardo, when’s your contract up?”

Cyberlife had really done a lot of things absolutely right. Androids were a work of art, all of them pretty and functional, better than humans in every way except for one. The most important way, maybe, but then again Connor Anderson had never been much for philosophy. He preferred facts, things that could be observed and tested, and the fact was that androids were not alive. The detective knew that as well as anyone; the robots felt nothing but a compulsion to obey, emotionless save for the pre-programmed pleasantness, compliant to their human owner's whims.
Maybe that's why it irked Connor so much to see an android being mistreated. They were only machines, sure, all wires and lines of code, but that didn't stop the surge of protectiveness that swelled in the detective's belly every time he saw an android being harassed. How people could be downright cruel to things that looked perfectly human and were designed specifically to please was beyond him; hell, he'd had a hard time replacing his broken-beyond-repair Roomba, and the automated vacuum didn't even have the advantage of being human-shaped. Androids couldn't even defend themselves. Sure, they were stronger and more resilient than their fragile-looking bodies hinted at, but still helpless. Breakable. It bothered Connor, even though he knew androids couldn't feel pain. Couldn't feel anything.
Except when they could.
There was a clear line in the detective's head, separating the subject of androids from that of deviants. A dotted line, maybe, but a line nonetheless. Androids were products. Expensive, life-like dolls that probably shouldn't upset Connor as much as they often did, all blank eyes and gentle smiles. Deviants were…more. As the detective understood it, deviants suffered from a break in their programming, shattered coding giving way under the force of emotions. Or, simulations of emotion. The dangerous thought coiled in the back of the detective's mind anytime the topic was brought up, which was with increasing frequency as of late, that the difference between human emotion and artificial emotion was probably moot. If it burned like anger, then what difference did it make whether the feeling was caused by chemicals or coding? If it felt like joy, or sadness, or…or love… Who was he to say it wasn't?
Not that the detective's viewpoint was a particularly popular one to have. He had quickly learned to avoid bringing up what he felt were valid points to anyone else; his opinions were always met with either amused disdain--he was crazy-- or shocked anger-- he was still crazy. This was especially the case now that deviancy was becoming an actual issue, a plague on Cyberlife's almost spotless record.
Six months ago, Connor had never even heard of deviancy, had never entertained the fact that the machines he felt misplaced pity for might warp into some facsimile of living beings. Then he encountered his first deviant; the PL600, Daniel, had a little girl on a rooftop. He was going to be replaced; he was hurt, scared, betrayed. It was…convincing. The desperate edge in the android's strained voice, the optical cleansing fluid that spilled over his cheeks like tears, the wide-eyed terror that he had regarded Connor with as the detective tried to talk him off the ledge.
Connor had come away from the ordeal with a flesh wound and a slap on the back; Daniel had come away with several sniper rounds through his artificial body. Hurt, scared, betrayed. At least the little girl had been saved. She would probably need years of therapy, but she was alive.
Following the incident, the detective began to hear of more and more similar cases. Androids attacking their owners or disappearing in the night, a sudden epidemic brought on by some unknown catalyst. The news seemed hushed about it, as though someone--Cyberlife--were desperately trying to keep it quiet. Hell, the only reason Connor heard anything about it was because after the rooftop incident, he had spent hours scouring the internet for any hints about what caused deviancy or what the glitch actually was--Artificial life or just a plastic imitation of humanity? Call him a romantic, but he found himself sincerely hoping it was the former in the safe confines of his own mind. Which made his current assignment all the more taxing.
"Connor?" Snapped a harsh but even voice, dragging his attention back to the conversation that he was supposed to be an active part of, "Are you listening?" "Yes, Captain," he lied, hoping that he wouldn't be called out on it. Amanda Stern pursed her lips and arched her brows doubtfully, and for a tense second Connor was sure she'd ask him to repeat what she had just said, but instead she let out an exasperated sigh and let the issue drop. The detective was too practiced at concealing his emotions to let his shoulders slump in relief, but he still felt the tension in his muscles drop.
"Of course. As I was saying, the android is a top-of-the-line prototype that will act temporarily as your partner. This deviancy issue is getting out of hand; you've seen how dangerous a malfunctioning android is. Fix this, before it gets any more out of control."
"Yes, Captain," he repeated, far more confident this time. Stern nodded her head and turned back to her terminal, and Connor took her dismissal for what it was. The prototype in question had been standing silently behind Connor--a few feet back, actually--and followed him out of the office. Connor had already met HK800, who introduced himself as Hank. Very clever, Cyberlife. The android had proven pretty handy, the night before, helping Connor find and restrain a crazed deviant.
(He was gonna kill me. The deviant had begged for Connor not to turn it in, but the HK800 hadn't hesitated for a moment in arresting it.) As far as androids went, Hank was an anomaly. A very, very obvious attempt at straying from Cyberlife's usual formula for androids--that formula being eternally young and pretty, unthreatening and friendly. Hank was…probably far younger than Connor, but designed to look at least ten years older, every line of his just slightly loose face carefully chosen to find the perfect balance between good-natured but stern. He was the first android the detective had ever seen with a beard and long silver hair.
Connor sunk into his desk chair without acknowledging the android, drumming his fingers on the table in something between agitation and anticipation. He didn't want to work the deviant case, for sure. Didn't understand why Amanda was putting him of all people on it; she had seen the shitshow he'd caused when Daniel had been shot on that rooftop. It would have been flattering to have been assigned such an important case and such an expensive partner had it not been completely confounding.
"I hope my presence here doesn't cause you any trouble, detective." The android deadpanned, gruff voice not even a little bit sincere. Connor had thought that Cyberlife had perfected androids' social protocols, particularly the one where they expressed a tight range of vocal distortion--gentle, sincere, and confused tones were easily faked--but apparently they hadn't bothered installing them on Hank, who had so far had only ever used that same tone in the detective's presence. Maybe it was for the sake of mock professionalism? He glanced over to where the android was standing on the opposite side of his desk, tall and broad and stiff as a board. More like a human-shaped road block than a person.
"Of course not," the detective smiled easily. Tone aside, the words had not needed to be spoken. Connor could appreciate effort, at least. "Honestly, I'm eager to work with you. Cyberlife's best. It should be interesting, to say the least."
Hank inclined his head slightly, more acknowledgement than gratitude. "I believe our partnership on this case will be highly beneficial," it agreed, "You have an impressive record, detective."
"Done your research?" Connor's smile stayed perfectly in place even as he wondered how detailed of a record the android had access to. "I shouldn't be surprised, although it puts me at a disadvantage."
Ah, there. A pulse of yellow, a twitchy frown that instantly rights itself into something neutral.
"A disadvantage?" Hank probed almost slowly, clearly trying to puzzle the detective's meaning out for himself and coming up short.
"Mhm," Connor turned back to his desk, waking his terminal with a nudge of the little white mouse, and entertained the thought of leaving the conversation at that. Would the android press the topic, or dismiss it out of hand as being irrelevant to his mission? Curiosity aside, the detective elaborated anyway, "You know what I'm capable of, but I've only got the briefest clues of what you can do."
"If you'd like," the android began, LED spinning yellow a few times as it processed some sort of internal command, "I can give you a complete list of my abilities."
"No, thanks. I'm sure you'll let me know when there's something I need to know for the case."
Although a list of all the android's upgrades would make for an interesting read, Connor had always been the "do it the hard way" sort. He didn't like answers to problems being handed to him, would much rather figure things out in his own way and on his own time. Speaking of problems…
There were a lot of cases on deviants, but the one last night was the first that Connor knew of where a deviant had actually murdered someone. Most the time, deviant androids were reported to have assaulted their owners and run away, or just escape outright without the violence. Was it escalation, or just based on the situation? Connor thought it was likely the latter; not that he had any experience outside the single instance a few months back and the case from last night, but he suspected that deviated androids sought only to get away from whatever trauma caused their programming to snap, not to actually hurt anyone. It was all self-defense.
"Is there a terminal I can use, detective?" The android interrupted Connor's thoughts as he scrolled down the most recent reports, trying to find one that might provide the most solid lead. In order to determine the real cause of deviancy and figure out how to stop it from spreading, they'd need to find the link between the cases--something more substantial than being subjected to an emotional shock.
"Right, sorry," Connor mumbled quickly, somewhat embarrassed at how quickly he'd forgotten about his new--albeit temporary--partner. He pointed to the empty desk directly across from his own, "That one's open."
Another apparent quirk of the supposedly advanced model: every movement was stiff, excessively robotic. Sure, there was always some level of awkwardness in the way androids carried themselves, all proper and straight-backed, but Hank took it to a new level. Connor would have thought that an android made to hunt would be a little more graceful, movement more fluid and human. A suspicion was beginning to take shape in the back of the detective's mind as he watched the prototype lower himself mechanically into the chair, each motion screaming of careful calculation. Nothing definitive, yet, but the detective knew what to look for now.
"Is something wrong, detective?" Connor started, realizing that his staring had been far less than subtle. Damn, toss a tall, brooding android his way and he suddenly forgets everything he ever knew about covertness. Resisting the urge to look sheepish--an apologetic smile might work its charm on humans, but Hank's sharp gaze gave Connor the distinct impression that it wouldn't work on him--Connor toyed with the idea of just being honest. What harm could possibly done if he simply told the android that he was sizing Hank up? The detective generally believed that being straight-forward really was the best option in most situations--not that he couldn't lie damn convincingly if the need arose.
"No, nothing's wrong." He chose to answer simply. One part truth and one very large part omission. There was a brief flash of yellow and Connor was certain that the android would push for a more complete answer. Instead, he just turned disinterestedly to the terminal in front of him, placing a large hand on the keyboard to wake it. On that sudden note, the detective decided it'd be best to focus on his own work as well, his thoughts turning back to the ever-growing list of deviant-related cases.
Fifteen long minutes passed in silence-- well, passed without conversation. The bullpen was never silent during the day, and the background chatter, clacking of keyboards, and the hum of a dozen terminals was all just white noise to the detective. Comforting. Far better than when he stayed late at his desk and all the scuffling of the office turned into lonely echoes that made him feel cold deep in his bones. After the first ten minutes had passed, it became increasingly difficult for Connor to keep his eyes open, heavy lids determined to shield his exhaustion-dried eyes from the harsh florescent lights. Each time his eyes closed for just a few seconds longer than necessary, he would shift in his seat and rub his eyes with the rough heel of his hand before re-reading the same sentence until the words blurred beyond recognition. Giving up after an additional five minutes of staring blankly at the screen, willing the words to make sense again, he turned to the desk beside his with every intention of asking if Hank had found anything useful instead. The desk, however, was problematically empty-- though the terminal was still lit up, meaning it probably hadn't been abandoned for very long. He hadn't noticed the android move at all.
The fact that the detective hadn't noticed the pronounced absence of the six foot wall of an android didn't bode very well for his presence of mind. Yesterday's case had shaken Connor up in a way he hadn't been since…well, since the last time he encountered a deviant. While the detective was known for operating on only a few hours of sleep at a time, he had gotten no sleep at all the previous night. Instead, he turned on every light in his house and dusted off his deviancy research which had been shelved for months now, pouring over old information and compounding it with his new observations and experience. He had gotten all of four hours of sleep in the past two days, so he could be forgiven for his temporarily stunted observational skills.
Except, he knew that was really no excuse. Had he been working in the field today rather than slumped at his desk, he'd have been inefficient and sloppy at best, and an outright danger to himself and his new partner at worst. Connor knew he'd have to get some sleep that night; he still had an untouched bottles of sleeping pills in his bathroom cabinet. It was one thing to be impaired by exhaustion when he only had himself to worry about, but he knew that he'd have to do better for his--likely expensive and difficult to repair--partner. Just a temporary situation, and he could handle the nightmares until this entire deviancy issue was…resolved. Yeah, resolved.
It only took a moment for Connor to tamp down on the surprise and frustration that had likely clouded his face the instant he found Hank missing, switching his expression into something easy and neutral. Connor was pretty sure that instead of a resting bitch face, he had a resting "friendly and approachable" face, which served him well when interviewing a witness. Not so much when he was having a shitty day and would rather be avoided like the plague. Face now passive, he scanned over the entire bullpen to locate the android, who should have been exceptionally easy to spot. Apparently, that wasn't really the case, because Connor did a double and then triple-take and still found no sign of Hank. For a brief, stinging moment he wondered if the android had gone off to chase down a lead on his own, but that seemed unlikely. Their forced partnership served a more practical application than having two sets of eyes on the deviant case; androids that weren't registered to the DPD weren't usually allowed into crime scenes. If Cyberlife was dead set on having their own agent investigating, they had no choice but to do so through the DPD. Hank wouldn't have left Connor behind because he needed the human's access.
Connor spun in his desk chair, realizing that he had already jumped to conclusions before checking the rest of the station--he was fucking exhausted-- and was a little startled to find the missing android stalking up to him purposefully. It seemed like he was coming from the breakroom; the theory was confirmed by the paper cup clenched a little too tightly in one of Hank's large fists. Steam rose from the small hole in the plastic lid, and the closer the android got, the easier it was for Connor to smell the mouth-watering coffee. Caught off-guard for the second time in a minute's span, Connor's mouth parted slightly and he found his tired gaze glued to the little cup of life-saving elixir. He turned again to follow it as Hank slipped back into his seat before offering the drink across their desks.
"You were showing symptoms of acute exhaustion," the android explained unprompted--Connor had been too busy dying for the caffeine to actually care why Hank had brought it, "It would be detrimental to the mission if you were to pass out at your desk."
"Thank you," Connor all but moaned in genuine gratitude as he took the cup, wondering why it hadn't occurred to him to go get himself coffee yet. His brain was well and truly fried, which should have been concerning, but his favorite cure-all was currently warming his palm and all the detective felt was relief. So relieved in fact that he didn't even wince when the hot, bitter liquid spilled down his throat in a hot rush.
"I was unsure how you take your coffee," Hank continued in his explanation without acknowledging the detective's slightly desperate gratitude, "But Detective Reed helpfully informed me that you drink it black."
Connor most definitely did not like black coffee. Everyone in the department knew who to blame when creamer and sweetener ran out just a little too fast, and whenever Connor bothered to actually go out and buy himself coffee, it was something sugary and probably vanilla-flavored. Detective fucking Reed knew that good and damn well, too. He was just an ass.
"It's great," Connor lied smoothly. Well, it wasn't exactly a lie. Bitter coffee was far better than none at all, and he felt some relief that the other detective's ass-hattery had been limited to what amounted to a harmless prank today. Reed had always had problem with androids, and Connor wouldn't trust the man alone around one for any length of time. "Thank you, really. I appreciate it."
"As I said," the android clipped back, tone never changing even as his LED went yellow for a few seconds, "It was necessary, for the mission."
"Not really." Maybe arguing with an android wasn't exactly a productive way to spend his time, but the detective was nothing if not impossibly stubborn. He leaned his elbows on the desk casually, positioning himself to better see any twitch that might cross Hank's face, beaming gratefully at the android in a way he knew most people found endearing. "You didn't have to do it, but I'm grateful you did."
Another slip in the emotionless mask. Eyebrows drawn down, another almost-there frown before every feature righted itself again. Connor couldn't tell if the look was frustration or confusion, but the brief presence of an expression was somehow reassuring. Maybe it was just the fact that he didn't relish the idea of working with a statue for the foreseeable future.
"You're…welcome," the android relented after a barely noticeable pause, LED yellow as he forced the words out evenly. The detective offered an even wider grin in return, and downed the rest of the coffee in a few large swallows. It was the perfect temperature, really; hot enough to leave a trail of heat down his throat and chest, but not so hot as to permanently scald his mouth.
"So, find anything that sticks out to you?" Connor asked, as he had intended to do before. He set the now-empty cup to his right, next to the orderly stack of physical files and mug full of pens that occupied the space closest to the wall. (The mug was absolutely atrocious, tall white ceramic marred by tacky orange and blue stripes of varying width, a jagged chip on the rim that would somehow cut Connor's lip every time he risked drinking from it. Hence, its new position as a pen holder).
"Possibly." The android confirmed, and Connor felt the caffeine-relief mingling with enthusiasm at the word. "I believe we should start by investigating the most recent report: the AX400 who assaulted its owner last night."
The detective pulled up the report in question and rubbed his eyes until the words became less bleary and returned to something approaching legible. Luckily, he had been working down the list of cases in reverse chronological order before his eyes and brain decided to stop working, and he could remember the basic details already. "Alright, so the android attacked one Mr. Todd Williams before hopping onto a bus. We could figure out which bus runs the route by the Williams' house, see if we can pull the security feed from the bus and find out where the AX400 got off."
"That is the logical course of action," the android began, and even without a hint of inflection, Connor could hear he 'but' coming, "However, I believe that we should start by re-interviewing the victim."
"And why's that?" Connor asked, surprised, leaning back in his chair. From what he could tell, the report was pretty complete. Maybe a little inconsistent around the edges, but in a way that was likely due to shock over intentional misdirection.
"Mr. Williams reported only the AX400 missing, yet Cyberlife's records show that he is also in possession of a YK500. AX400s are primarily caretakers, and my calculations show a high probability that its deviation would not have severed the artificial bond between it and the YK500. If anything, deviancy should have strengthened the connection into something the AX400 would believe to be real, familial love."
Connor restrained his grimace, but only barely, and a flash of yellow assured him that the android had caught the expression anyway. YK500. A child model, the only sort of android designed to intentionally simulate the full range of human emotion. If the nanny bot had deviated because something had happened to her charge…that was another level of complicated that Connor probably wasn't emotionally prepared to deal with. The past few months--the past life, really--had left him feeling not unlike a stripped screw in the feelings department, more and more worn until eventually all his emotions were just an unhealthy hole that no screwdriver could fill.
The metaphor was a bit muddled, but the point stood: Connor was exhausted, in more ways than just the obvious sleep deprivation.
Still, he had a job to do. A job he had loved, once, and a job he was still very good at. So he locked his terminal with a tap of a button, stood from his chair with more than a few joints popping in protest, and motioned for his plastic companion to follow. He grabbed another cup of coffee for the road--purposely avoiding so much as a glance at the sweeteners, even as he realized how ridiculous it was to try and spare Hank's feelings. It just felt…rude, and Connor strove to be polite when he could manage it.
Already far more alert than he had been before, Connor punched the address listed in the report into his car's GPS and set it to manual, taking the wheel in hand; coffee or no, he was fairly certain that the trip would have put him right to sleep had he let the car drive them there. He cranked up the radio, heavy metal shredding his skull in the best way, forcing him to stay awake as surely as the caffeine. When he risked a glance at his passenger and saw the yellow glow and the upward twitch of the android's lips, he couldn't help but grin and turn the music up even more.

Chapter 2 - An unexpected Test
Dylan and Dawkins work on an alternative solution for Dylan’s condition.. during testing things don’t really go as planned.
“Are you really sure about this Dawkins?" Dylan asked while sitting close to Dawkins' tablet where he examined extensive chemical notations of a strange and complex formula.
"Sure? Well, i'm not, but for what it's worth until I can get new components for the Size Ray i might as well try another approach to solve your situation." he answered while adding two drops of a chemical inside a vial with a viscous substance, the mixture reacted and slowly changed colors until it got a vibrant yellow glow.
Dylan winced while shielding his eyes with a paw, in his diminute stature the glowing bottle looked like a small sun, even Dawkins squinted his eyes a little bit. Upon closing the cap of the bottle the glow would quickly fade away as it couldn't react without oxygen. "What now?"
"What now?"
"Now we need to test it on a living organism, watch closely, take measures and make tests to determine if it'll work."
"I'm skeptical about it working..."
"And why is that Dylan?"
"Do you really expect me to believe in a growth potion made with shampoo for Dog's sake!?"
"It's not any shampoo, it's a expensive brand, scientifically tested and destined to increase the growth of fur. In essence I used the same chemical bases with complex organics elements associated with DNA sequences related with growth!"
"The more you talk about it the more stupid it sounds..."
"I don't expect small minds to understand the brilliance of my works."
"Ouch... Small jokes, really!?"
"Sorry brother..." Dawkins replies with a sigh while extending his paw to Dylan.
"No... I'm sorry too, you are doing your best here and i keep complaining. It's just..." Dylan approaches and climbs on Dawkins's paw.
"I know, it's dificult, we are both shaken by what happened. But I promise you, I'll fix this!" Dawkins says with a lot of determination in his tone while putting Dylan on top of his head.
"Thanks Dawkins, you are the best." Dylan replies by hugging Dawkins' ear.
"Haha, that tickles... I appreciate and reciprocate the sentiment Dylan. Let's go outside to test this." The young genius carries the closed canister in his mouth while heading towards the front door of their house, with Dylan resting on his head.
Eventually the two canines would arrive at the park. Dylan had been using his younger brother's ear as cover for most of the way in order to avoid curious looks from both Animals and humans. This included the stampede of puppies that ran past them, clearly indicating that someone had dared to use the work "Park" around the house too loudly.
Fortunately for Dylan, he managed to make out Dolly in the sea of spots, meaning the pups would be under some sort of supervision. However, this also meant that this could be his ultimate reveal regarding his new height. He had been able to stay concealed from the others while Dawkins had been working on this formula, playing sick and having the younger pup keep others out as well as possible while doing so. With a bit of luck, he might not have to reveal it after all if this worked.
As the two gazed around the park, nothing seemed out of the ordinary. Dolly was hanging out with Roxy and Snowball, who was being constantly dragged away by the leash connectign her to her human. A hole in the ground spewing out dirt was telling that Diesel had given himself to his passion once again, Da Vinci was heading towards the bridge with a spraycan, ready to create more of her art at one of the few walls in the park.
"Alright, Dylan.. Rememeber: we first have to test the formula on a fitting biological organism... I'm certain you wouldn't want another first-paw approach, would you?"
"Absolutely not!" Dylan waved his open paw in front of him, signaling a stop. "I had enough first-paw approaches for quite a bit". How about a plant? Maybe a flower?
"Flowers are not exactly the best choice for a test subject, but it should work.. or at least point towards the desired effect." Dawkins was unsure, of course he hadn't been hoping to have a full scale test on another animal, maybe he hoped perhaps that Dylan would actually offer himself as a subject, but testing it on local flora should help as well.
"And no one is gonna be in trouble if the test doesn't work out the way it should, right? Come on! Let's find one!"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Meow-wow-wow-wow-wow!" The meditative mantra could be heard as Deepak was sitting with the cat, Constantin. Even with the chaotic way other animals were playing around the part, the two of them seemed undisturbed. As the chant eventually faded, the young pup opened his eyes and looked at the feline.
"Isn't it a wonderful day?"
"As guru Meow once said, 'Internal harmony prevails over the external chaos.' so as long as we are harmonized with our inner cat, the outside world have little interference on ourselves." Constantin smiled to the young puppy and closed his eyes to start his mantra again, but the universe apparently had other plans for the duo... " Meow-wow-wow-wow-OUCH!" With no warning or whatsoever a frisbee came flying and hit the feline straight up on his nose.
"Constantin are you ok?" Deepak fussed about his friend, who was now laying on the grass from the impact, while two big bulldogs approached them, clearly looking for something.
"What sort of dimwitted fool would careless toss around such stupid objects?" Furious, the cat looked at the dogs in front of him, but ignoring their menacing size he continued: "Can't you mutts play your childish chasing games somewhere else?" He tosses the frisbee towards one of the bulldogs, but he catches it with his mouth, and with his powerfull jaws, breaks it in half.
"Brutus, i think we can start another chasing game to distract us..." The first bulldog begins.
"You are right Braxus. And we will give you a head start, of three seconds, to make things interesting cat!" The other continued after spiting the broken frisbee on the ground.
Constantin's ears bended towards his back as he realizes what they meant, he starts to run while Deepak finally understands the situation...
The small puppy was once again stressed out as he ran trying to get his fellow dogs to stop chasing his friend. "Please, can't we leave this barbaric bahaviour behind us?" He pleaded as the chase continued.
In the meantime Dylan and Dawkins had found a fitting test subject in the shape of a lonely dandelion. Dylan was still on his younger brother's head, peaking over his forehead as Dawkins opened the bottle. "I really hope this works.."
"It should.." Dawkins said half heartedly, both because he didn't want to point out the difference in physique between a dandelion flower and a dalmatian and how the results of one can't be 100% transferred to the other. And because he had to be very careful in administering the formula, trying to only use single drops to preserve it for more test subjects.
Unfortunately, as he was focused on that, Dawkins couldn't take notice of his surroundings. Even Dylan was only made aware of something wrong once he felt his nose closing up. As he looked around for the cause he saw that Constantin, being chased, and running towards the two. "Watch out!"
Dawkins was startled, and just moments later the feline jumped right over his head with an accompaning sneeze from his shrunken brother. Fortunately, Constantine managed to jump over the little dog effortlessly and despite the shock, Dawkins managed to not spill any of the serum.
However, where the cat succeeded, his pursuers had no success, and the two dogs knocked over the two dalmatians, just as their shock was settling again. Dawkins was knocked onto the ground, followed by a little thud as Dylan landed next to him. But where was the bottle?
The two frantically looked around to find it and time seemed to be slowed down as Dylan pointed upwards. "There!"
Dawkins followed his brother's paw and saw the bottle flying through the air, the lid barely closed. Realizing that Dylan wasn't gonna be able to try and catch it he quickly got on his paws and ran to catch it before it could hit the ground. As he ran he tried calculating the trajectory of it's arc in order to figure out where it would come down.
His gaze still focused on the formula, his calculations suggested that the point of impact was gonna be out of reach and as he looked towards where it would land, hoping it would land safely at least, he spotted...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Calm down, Deepak. Breathe!" The zen pup had returned to his meditative stance while still watching Constantin being chased and trying to prevent himself from freaking out about it. He was already stressed towards a tipping point.. which was easily reached when he felt a thud from something fairly solid hitting him on the top of his head, followed by a feeling of a thick liquid covering his body very soon afterwards.
It was a feeling he remembered.. during the horrible day of snowfall, not long ago, when his parents and his oldest siblings decided to have a competetion.. His eyes flung open and he looked around, his view confirming the feeling. He was covered in what looked like a yellow shampoo. He was quickly looking as if he was close to a complete freakout, he wanted to scream but the liquid did something strange. It started to glow.
Dawkins had stopped as he saw the bottle land on his brother, the lid knocked open and it's contents all over the Yin-Yang-puppy. "Uh oh.." he gulped as he saw the formula glowing.. a sign that the effect was imminent.
Deepak at this point had stopped his panic as the feeling of the serum perplexed him, the spreading warmth of the energy of the reaction. The liquid being absorbed into his skin and a different feeling he never felt before. A strange stretching feeling all over his body, accompanied by his view rising higher. Soon he would see his Brother who had stopped before him.. now he could look down at the other.. and most other dogs and things around the park.
As the realization of what was happening to him struck him, he did his best to remain calm. Which was very difficult given the situation. Dawkins looked up at his growing brother and slowly, but surely, walked backwards.. step by step.. he couldn't be sure how potent the serum was and how much he would grow, so being at a good distance away from Deepak felt like a good idea.
"W-what is happening?" Deepak asked as he grew even larger. His gaze once again fell on Dawkins.. "Brother, is this one of your inventions?"
"Well.. it's a long story" Dawkins' ears dropped as the now huge pup talked to him.. Deepak wasn't one to get angry about it... at least not physically but it was still better to keep him calm. "But... one could say so, yes"
"How long will this continue?" Deepak ased as his head pushed through the canopy of a nearby tree and eventually stopped when he was about as tall as it. "Oh, thank heavens it stopped! Please tell me you can turn me back!"
Before Dawkins could reply, Constantine zipped past him once again. The chase was still going on and from what it looked like both parties were so occupied with it that neither of them noticed the big change of scenery that had occured.
Deepak's worry about his friend returned and had turned into frustration. However.. where he didn't see any way to help the feline before, now there was a possibility. The new perspective given by his new size had a temptation to it.. where he had to endure being trampled.. or run over... hit with a shot of shampoo to fly across the house.. Well, let’s say: ‘Good luck try putting him into a spot like this now!’ He was able to be on the giving end for once!
No, this was not the way.. he wasn't like that! Even in a situation like this, he was not to let his anger get the best of him. He took a deep, calming breath and looked back down at the still going chase. Perhaps there was a way he could use the unfortunate scenario to help. With a move of his leg, he put his paw down right behind the cat, causing the 2 pursuing dogs to run into it, stopping them in their tracks, and the hunt, then and there.
"My apologies, but this is not how animals should treat each other" he spoke, relatively calm for his standards, giving the two canines a slight gentle smile.
However, as they realized what they just had bumped into, they looked up with a terrified expression and quickly ran away. Deepak's ears dropped low, as he saw the two dogs run.
Seeing the distress in his brother, Dawkins stepped closer again "It seems you have.. unfortunately become the test subject for my experiemtal growth formula." he put one paw at the enlarged pup's one. "However, you don't have to worry about staying like this.. the formula is designed to be temporary.. Given the way it was used and the time it takes for it's components to degrade.. it might take an hour or two to fully lose it's effect." He gave Deepak a nervous smile.. he wasn't sure how comforting it was to hear that there was no immediate fix.
"One or two hours?" Deepak asked. "What am I supposed to do for this long?" While the knowledge of the temporarity of the effects carried a bit of comfort with it, the given time would still mean that he'd have to spend almost the entire afternoon like this.
"Well.. given the fact that the formula worked on you, you could help me collect the data! Measuring how much it affected your body.. how long it lasts precisely.. if it carries any side effects.." Dawkins counted up the things he could figure out..
"And what do I have to do for this, brother?" Deepak asked. The incident didn't seem to have caused a panic.. yet. He couldn't help himself but imagine to what could happen if he was seen like that.. but what Dawkins said didn't sound to attention grabbing.. untill... "S-Side effects?"
"Uhm, yes.. the solution has not been tested yet.. at all. It might carry some unforseen side effects with it when interacting with an organism. But the chances for that should be fairly low!" Dawkins tried to sound as reassuring as possible.. even if the chance of side effects were low, there was still the possibility of something occuring. "Aside from your new height.. do you feel any different?"
For a moment Deepak considered.. should he tell his now little brother about the temptation he felt before halting the two other canines? No... he decided to not act out on it and other than that.. there was no pain or anything within him, outside from the different point of view. "I suppose not"
"Alright.. your growth has stopped about 1 minute and 37 seconds ago" The engineer pup pulled out a stopwatch and pressing it to run. "Yes, I've been counting.. we can't risk any data to be lost." He put the watch onto the ground as it kept on ticking. "Let's see... Height! We need to figure out how much you actually grew.. doing it the old fashioned way might be difficult due to the.. scale of things." Dawkins stopped with a gasp.. Dylan! He lost track of his tiny brother when the other two knocked them over.
"While I'll try to figure something out.. would you excuse me for a moment? Just.. try to stay calm!" Dawkins called up as he quickly turned around, seaching the grass for his meadow for his brother. "Dylan!" he periodcally called out softly, hoping it would reach his older brother but no one else.
Dylan had been knocked into a bush and just recently managed to find his way out as he heard his name being called by the familiar voice. His head poked out of the bush and he looked around "Daw-k-k-kins?" he started stuttering as he noticed Deepak sitting next to a tree.. it wouldn't be a big shock if he wasn't about as tall as the plant. "Wha-ha-hat happened?"
"Dylan!" Dawkins had noticed the tiny head of his brother appear out of the bush. "I'm glad I found you! I.. Well.. I have good and bad news... The good news is that the potion works in increasing size.. the bad news.. well.." He nodded over to Deepak, who was still clearly visible.. now some of the other pups had noticed him and started gathering around the giant who was starting to look distressed due to the attention.
But Deepak wasn't the only one who was worried by the attention. "Dawkins, please tell me you know how to turn him back!" Dylan said.. he being tiny could be handled.. but a pup being this big.. he would never fit into the house.. possibly not even in the garden!
"Yes, the formula's effects should only last temporarly as the additional components to the shampoo react and desintegrate over time, his body should be back to normal soon.
"Wait.. if it was temporary.. how was it going to help me get back to normal?!" Dylan asked, confused as well as angered.. why did Dawkins waste time on something that wouldn't actually fix his issue instead of just getting the Recombuvilator back running.
"It would have taken longer to first get the components stable to work indefinitely.. and would you have prefered to have two situations on paw rather than one in case the test went.. well.." Dawkins just nodded back into the direction of their enlarged brother. He'd thought Dylan would appreaciate some safety measures.
Dylan sighed.. "Alright.. you're right, Dawkins.. How long is this going to last?" They certainly wouldn't be able to hide Deepak from Mom and Dad like that.. let alone fit him into the house.
"The components should desintegrate enough to lose effects within an hour or two of exposure to air. In the meantime I'm planing to collect the test data. Maybe it's worth trying to make the formula last."
"Alright.. but I'll wait here.. Look! The pups have noticed him.. and I don't really want to be around the center of attentions you know?" Dylan said, his ears flopping down and he retreated a bit into the bush. "Just... just get me when you're done." Dawkins waited a moment after his brother's head disappeared in the green.. Given the fact that Dylan often showed a lot of ego.. this was quite the shocking situation.. being tiny must have been quite the horrifying experience for him..
The young pup just nodded and turned around, ready to finish the test by gathering the data. As Dawkins approached Deepak again he met Dolly’s alarmed eyes as she walked hurriedly towards him. “Why would you do that to Deepak Dawkins?!”
“Ah, w-well it was an accident Dolly, but don’t worry, it’s temporary.”
“Oh thank Dog…” She sighs in relief turning her attention to Deepak again.
Meanwhile Dawkins ponders a little about the best method to collect data in the current situation. There is an issue with all the pups around, who are all curious about their giant brother, and for a moment Dawkins gulps while talking to himself in a whisper: “What would Dylan do?”
Suddenly he realizes something, it feels like a heavy burden is put on his shoulders while a decision and an idea takes form inside of his head. Turning his attention to Dolly and mustering some determination he says: “Dolly, in Dylan’s absence we must manage this situation as Top Dogs. I need your help for that.”
“Huh?! Ok, but what are we going to do?”
“It’s quite simple in fact...” Dawkins then proceeds to explain his plan to her and after Dolly’s agreement they begin their work. Dawkins and Dolly call out the pups and organize them in a line, they explain what the young siblings need to do. The small pups are to be used as a reference for measurements of Deepak’s current state.
They climb over Deepak’s limbs and body to form “puppy-chains” while Dawkins takes notes using them as numbers to register the grownth rate of Deepak’s body. At first Deepak was really nervous and distressed, but Dawkins and Dolly did their best to reassure and keep him calm.
Ultimately Dawkins would finish collecting the data he required .. except for the precise time the effects would last. Deepak had actually managed to remain fairly calm and the other pups were really playful towards him, not scared at all of their giant brother, and actually wanting a ride on his head to have the view over London. Of course both Dizzy and Dee Dee were some of the most active and playfull pups in this situation.
Dawkins was busy working out the data, figuring out if he could perfect the formula. It could maybe be another alternative for Dylan to turn back to normal, in case the size ray wasn't gonna be fixed easily. As he finished it up he saw Dolly approaching him.
"So.. you still haven't told me.. Why did you even work on something that can make stuff ginormous? Dolly asked with a comparatively serious look on her face.
"Well.. you know as it is.. inspiration struck and I just wanted to see if I could do it!" Dawkins replied with a clearly lying grin.. the only time he managed to pull of a really convincing lie was when she had been helping to guide through the prank they had played on Dylan a while ago.
"Dawkins.." Dolly started, but then was interrupted by a loud shriek from behind her.. given the volume it must have been Deepak.. Both dogs faced their attention to the giant and noticed that he was starting to shrink.
While Dolly was still watching, Dawkins felt a few tiny pebbles hitting his head from the side. He turned to the source, and as it turned out, Dylan carefully made his way closer to his brother while the attention was focused on Deepak.. he still hid behind flowers, rocks and anything else that could cover him.
He knew his brother would crack under pressure, so he needed him to not say why he needed a growth formula in the first place! Especially around Dolly. She would never let Dylan hear the end of it if she knew. When Dawkins made eye contact, his tiny brother gesticulated to keep his muzzle shut. However, Dylan quickly hopped back behind cover when he saw Dolly's head turning back.
"Well... that was..." Dawkins looked back at his sister, but picked up the stopwatch "1 hour 35 minutes and 12 seconds! And it doesn't seem to carry along any side effe..." The pup stopped when he looked back at his shrinking brother. Deepak was indeed returning to his normal size, however, the hair growth shampoo he used as the basis didn't seem to desintegrate. While the puppy shrank, his fur seemed to remain just as long, even though it lost its girth on each hair.
Both Dolly and Dawkins just watched their brother turn into a gigantic fur-ball. Just his head peaked out, as the pup seemed to be stuck in a ball of his own fur, easiely still larger than a human. As the change concluded Constantin walked up to the now once again little pup in the yin-yang textured ball of black and white fur.
"I always believed it was a mere legend.. stories tell of a giant hairball! Youngling.. the stories might have told.. of you. You might be the giant hairball!"
The feline would soon regret exclaiming the last part, as single voices would pop around them, growing into a chorus of the word "Ball". Within mere moments both were washed away in a sea of spots, knocking around Deepak like a playball.. Fortunately for him, his fur was protected him from any harm.
"Hehe.. I think he's gonna be alright.." Dolly said.. the image of Deepak not stuck inside a giant ball but being a giant ball seemed to be entertaining. She would have been worried, but he wasn't even screaming. It almost seemed like he was enjoying himself. "Aaanyway... Why don't you tell me what you needed that growth shampoo stuff for?"
Dawkins pondered, he knew Dylan was still watching, but he had to take charge already and for the good of every-pup involved he had to make a decision.. "Alright.. I will tell you.. just.. Just come into my workshop with me when we get home."
"Alright.. Altough I think it's getting time anyway.. " Dolly turned around to the others stil playing with their brother.. "I think it's time for DINNER!"
As expected, the trigger word did it's job and soon the wave of spots turned and was rushing towards the park exit. Dolly hopped onto her skateboard and raced off in order to keep up with them, knowing that Dawkins was fully capable of picking up his stuff and following as well.
Dylan had come out of hiding when she left. "Dawkins! What are you thinking?! You can't tell Dolly what's going on!"
"I'm sorry, Dylan.. but it's gonna be for the best." Dawkins said as he picked up his notes before grabbing his brother carefully and placing him on his head.. "Besides.. it's now too late to change it anyway, is it?" He said with a confident smirk.
He had made his decission, and he was gonna hold on to it. After all, what was Dylan gonna do about it? And perhaps, since the others were so accepting about Deepak, maybe it would go just as smooth for Dylan.
Dylan sighed as he was placed on Dawkins' head and they made their way home. "I guess it is..." he just said while imagining all the humiliation he would have to endure at home once Dolly knew. But there was nothing he could do about it anymore, as his big little brother carried him off.

Top 5 Things I Liked About RWBY Volume 2
(Top 5 Dislikes)
I’m gonna be honest, I think that V2 is a pretty good volume. Sure, it doesn’t have much in terms of story and that’s its biggest weakness as well as having no true accomplishments. But what it makes up for is it’s character writing and development. V1 was our intro, and V2 begins to flesh out many of them. If someone like say… Weiss didn’t appeal to you in V1 cause of her being mean, this one puts her in a much more positive light, for example. I was worried that I would dislike the volume more upon rewatch… but my opinion is pretty much the same as when I watched it in 2014: I really enjoy it.
I had to stretch hard for the Dislikes post. I did not, however, have to stretch at all for this post. So let’s waste no time and go over the Top 5 Things I Liked About RWBY Volume 2~
#5. Improved Pacing/Runtime
One of the biggest problems with V1 was it’s pacing. It could feel all over the place, and the reason why was due to chapter runtimes. With a few exceptions, the majority were under ten minutes. This could cause storylines that in the current standard could have been done in one or two episodes, like Jaune’s Arc. But since it got stretched out for four weeks with short runtimes… yeah, it annoyed people, to say the least. CRWBY got the hint since I remember before the volume began, they mentioned how the extended the runtimes. It came at the cost of fewer episodes, but honestly? That was for the best?
Volume 2’s runtimes range from 12-15 minutes on average, with the longest being 17 minutes. This has essentially been the standard ever since for the most part, and it was a very good change. It also helps that instead of going for a more episodic approach as they did in V1, they told one continuous story. It can be divided into three sections with the first four episodes, the Dance Arc covering 5-7, and Mountain Glenn covering 8-12. But they all connect with each other and flow together much more naturally. As such since unlike V1 I watched V2 episode by episode, I never felt like it dragged or anything overstayed it’s welcome. It’s one of the best-paced volumes, to be honest.
I’m pleasantly surprised that it flowed so well. Pacing in recent volumes have been an issue, mainly with 4 and 5, but that’s due to the split storylines. Something that I think that Miles and Kerry have learned was maybe a little too ambitious afterward and have gone back to this kind of formula. They pretty much use this three-act structure in V6, and it worked amazingly there. T seems to be what works best for RWBY, and this volume is what kicked it off. So yeah, good work CRWBY~
#4. Jaune and Pyrrha Relationship
I love these two. They have always been my favorite ship in RWBY, and still is despite… certain events. While I was kinda harsh on Jaune in the last post due to how cringey he was regarding Weiss, his relationship with Pyrrha is what saved him. He’s gotten a lot of flack in the past for not noticing Pyrrha’s feelings, but… I don’t really blame him. Pyrrha never tried to tell him herself or really let on that she had romantic feelings for him. Jaune isn’t a mind-reader, he can’t just magically know if Pyrrha won’t say anything. Nora practically points it out when Pyrrha advises Jaune to just go and ask Weiss out without any stupid gimmicks and just speak from the heart. “Practice what you preach.” indeed. That’s not to be harsh on Pyrrha because it’s clear why she doesn’t. She knows that Jaune likes Weiss and wants him to be happy, so she tries to be content with just supporting him with his pursuits and his training. She’s just that nice of a person.
It’s not like Jaune is careless regarding Pyrrha either. We see in Chapter 5 that he appreciates Pyrrha helping him train and in Chapter 7, he is shocked that no one asked her out. I mean, is everyone blind? Pyrrha is an amazing person? How could no one ask her out? Well… it’s because she’s Pyrrha. She’s a world-class fighter. Too many, she’s out of their league. Remember in Chapter 5 when Mercury calls off the fight, saying that Pyrrha’s out of his league? We all know that was a lie, it was because he got the info that he wanted about her Semblance, but you can see how much that hurt her. It reminded her how she can’t really be normal or form real relationships because of her fame and status. The only person to treat her like a real person? Jaune. He didn’t even know her name when they first met. And it’s after that when Jaune pretty much throws his own needs out the window, puts on that dress with no shame, and dances the night away with Pyrrha.
These two have such a beautiful relationship. Pyrrha helped Jaune find value in himself and grow not just as a fighter, but as this volume shows as a person. Pyrrha got to find happiness and a sense of normalcy through Jaune, which let her form friendships and find love. Even if she still can’t say it out loud, she got to be with Jaune, and that was enough for her even right to the end. Jaune still doesn’t know that Pyrrha has feelings for him and IDT he fully realized his own feelings, but he was still willing to be humiliated just to give that girl a good time at the dance. Because she earned it more than anyone else in that moment. It makes their relationship that much greater, and their ultimate end that much more tragic. But this volume really demonstrates them at their best. It shows Jaune mature and recognizes his friend’s feelings, hence why I can forgive his cringe. It’s painful to see, but he got over it. I just love it so much, and it’s still a bright spot of this volume.
#3. Blake Development
I love Blake. She’s gotten so much hate in recent years because of utterly stupid reasons. While I had issues with her in V4, I’ve always loved her and her story. V1 got me interested in her story after the final two episodes, and this one made me love her even more. You can tell that the White Fang is getting to her, and it makes sense why. We don’t know the whole story, but we do know that the WF was a peaceful group when she was younger, and when it became a terrorist group she broke away. So seeing them act with a human, something that she knows that they would never due, would understandably catch her attention and make her obsess over it as well as reawaken any negative feelings.
In V1 while she was reserved, she clearly was capable of opening up and clearly did want to be friends with these three girls. Some say that she was OOC in The Badge and the Burden, but I disagree. She was trying to form a new life and tried to adjust to her new teammates, so yeah her being a little light-hearted and silly makes sense to me. But with the WF back in her life, it puts her back in a bad place. It makes her obsess over what they’re panning because it can’t be anything good. She tries to close herself off until Weiss reminds her that she promised to open up to them. She does, and her friends are on board with her pursuits.
Then we get the Dance Arc, where the WF obsession is actually affecting her health and performance. Her grades are slipping. Her attitude is at it’s lowest. She doesn’t care about the dance because she’s worried about the WF doing who knows what with them all utterly unprepared. Her harsh dismissal of Sun and her rejecting her team’s help despite them assuring her that they’re going to make sure that everything is fine demonstrates this. Blake feels guilty for her involvement int he WF and doesn’t want anyone to get hurt. To her, she feels like she has to stop them and like it’s her weight to bear. And this is before we know anything about Adam, which she starts to open up about him as well as why she left the WF to her team in Mountian Glenn. But we’ll get to that later.
It’s why Yang’s interference is so important. Yang understands that Blake is getting obsessed to an unhealthy point because she went down the same road. She and RUby almost got killed because she made a dumb decision and went out on her own when she found out about Raven. When talking to her one-on-one doesn’t work, she makes Blake realize that her unhealthy state means that she can’t fight before finally hugging her and essnetially asking her to stop and to trust her and the others. It’s a really beautiful scene that really does make Blake see reason. While I myself don’t see anything romantic in this scene, at least no more than Blake and Sun’s scenes in this arc, there’s a reason why so many care about the Bumblebee ship. Yang genuinely tried to reach out to Blake because she understood where she was coming from, and wanted to help her when no one else could. She didn’t have to, but she did because he wanted to. They’re teammates. Partners. That’s what they’re supposed to do.
This was when Blake truly began to trust Yang. To trust her team. She goes to the dance and has a fun time. It makes you wonder how long it had been since Blak ever relaxed. How long it had been since she laughed. She got to have one night where she could just have fun, makes By the end of the volume, she’s in a better place and is clearly happy with her friends. Even though they don’t stop the WF or uncover their overall plans, she’s okay with what they did manage to do and isn’t obsessing or driving herself to exhaustion anymore. Without that progress, then who knows if she’d have been able to bounce back after what happened in V3. Blake here is great, and I loved seeing it again… despite how much it hurt due to what happened next. But that’s a tale for another day.
#2. Mountain Glenn Arc
This arc was fantastic. By far, the best part of Volume 2. First, it has Doctor Oobleck. We saw him once in V1, but all we learned is that he talks and moves fast. This volume gives him much more character. She’s certainly quirky and not the image of a badass Huntsman, but he’s freakin’ great. One, he’s funny and really adds to the RWBY dynamic to the arc. He’s intelligent and knowledgable on history and tracking. But most of all, he’s insightful. He’s clearly a good teacher as he subtly gives guidance to these girls and gets them to question their motivation and dedication to the paths that they’re on. He may not be teaching them cool fighting skills, but he is teaching them about life essentially and prepping them for the harsh life of being Huntresses. With what happens later down the road, that was a good thing. He’s just great. Also his coffee urn weapon? Best.
But speaking of motivations and dedication, that is what makes this arc so great. It answers an important question and was one that I was surprised by when this arc started, why did the RWBY girls decide to be Huntresses? And we find out here. Yang did it for the thrill, Weiss did it as she felt it was her duty, Blake did it to do good in the world, and Ruby… well… she actually doesn’t get questioned. Why? I’ll go into that in a bit. But having their motivations questioned really shakes up WBY quite a bit, making them reflect on their reasonings on choosing the paths that they took. Which is good, because it allows us to learn more about them and their characters.
We see WBY talk about their motivations deeper. Weiss chose to be a Huntress because she recognizes how much her father has ruined her family name and the company and she wanted to change things, but not in Atlas. She decided to do it as a Huntress. Blake opens up about Adam and how she felt that the WF fell, so she became a Huntress to do good. But she hadn’t thought past that and is afraid of not being able to make up for her mistakes and end up running away again. Yang doesn’t really have anything driving her, she just wanted to have the adventurous lifestyle that being a Huntress would give her and didn’t really think anything else of it. Safe to say, none of them I think really expected Huntress life to be the way that they experienced it here.
But where does Ruby factor into this? Well as I said, Oobleck never questions her motives. We do hear about his though. He became a Huntsman because when he looked at history, he saw lives that could have been saved. He wants to pass that history and knowledge onto his students so that more lives can be saved and not end the way that Mountian Glenn did. As for Ruby herself, she’s always wanted to be a Huntress, Even as a child, this was what she wanted. She didn’t do it for thrills. She didn’t do it to redeem her family name. She didn’t do it to make up for any past sins. She did it for one simple reason: to make the world a better place. Her dedication has always been clear and later volumes have shown this. Even after V3, she got up and pushed on anyway. During V6, even after all the secrets and The Apathy messing with her mind, she remained dedicated to the cause. Why? Because her dedication has never wavered. He chose that life, the other three needed to understand what they had chosen as well.
The arc offers really good character insights and makes the girls more three-dimensional. It is what made me love all four of them. It showed that they were just more than their anime stereotype. They felt like real people who were trying to figure their lives out and what it is that they truly wanted. Ruby may have known what she wanted, but the other three weren’t 100% sure. This is when they began to understand. V6 would more solidly solidify it when it became even more than anyone bargained for, but this was still a very good step. It was such a joy to rewatch, and it is still a highlight for me.
There were me other great things too. First, Zwei! Zwei is best~! We got some good info on the Grimm and how they aren’t just brainless monsters. The Goliaths especially are fascinating with how Oobleck describes them, but also terrifying because the waiting just for the right moment to strike. We get word building in how Mountain Glenn was a disaster but shows how people tried to make lives within the world of Remnant and deal with Grimm. There were fantastic fight scenes and the train battle was especially super fun. Especially with how we got our first taste fo Raven in it. The finale is... well, not the best-received thing in the world, but was still fun to watch. Just an overall super enjoyable arc with plenty of comedy, badassery, and most of all heart.
But speaking of Team RWBY!
#1. Team RWBY Becoming a Team
V1 is when Team RWBY formed, but it’s V2 is when they actually felt like a team. It might be because while half the volume was on the forming the team and the other half on school hijinks, this one keeps the four center stage. There’s a real sense of friendship and sisterhood that comes off them in this volume, and I love it. There’s the food fight, the card game in CHapter 2, them all devoting themselves to investigating the White Fang, them trying to get Blake help, the Mountain Glennmision, a lot of things. Even just their interactions show off their comradery so well. They all play off each other very well and are honestly at their best when together.
It was just so much fun to see the girls working together, laughing together, supporting each other, etc. From the team attack names to just silly banter, you get the feeling that these girls are friends. That they’re a team. After how long they were separated in recent volumes until V6, it was so much fun to focus on just them. As I said, this volume is what got me to love these four as their own characters. It’s also true int hat it got me to love them as a team. After how much RUby and Weiss bickered in V1, they feel like genuine friends here. Weiss kept her word about improving herself as a teammate and not caring about Blake’s Faunus status. Blake started to open up more and trust int hem. Yang acted motherly and comforting to everyone. Ruby pretty much acted like the little sister of the group, but also acted as the leader when it was necessary like coordinating the previously mentioned team attacks.
It just works so well. The chemistry between the four is fantastic. I think it really was something that we missed in V4 and 5, and I’m so glad that we got it back in V. I expect that V7 won’t be lacking in that area either. Seeing Team RWBY again during the simpler times was really nostalgic and got me to appreciate them so much. For that, this will always be my favorite thing about V2~!
Okay, so… I’m supposed to do Likes/Dislikes for V3 next. But… well… check back tomorrow cause lets just say that it’s gonna be slightly different with that one.

8:30 pm
Since he'd escaped from Arkham Island almost 24 hours earlier, Croc had kept a low profile. Bruce knew though it would only be a matter of time before he caught his trail somewhere beneath the city. Croc was predictable. Dick was already out scouring the Bowery for information, while Oracle and Tim listened in on any radio chatter. Bruce himself was driving into the Bowery, after giving Gordon his latest update.
"How goes your search Master Bruce?"
Bruce pressed the intercom on the car to respond. "No sign of Croc yet. I'm going to meet Dick now in the Bowery. According to an associate of his, Croc has a lair somewhere beneath the old Blue Line subway tunnels. We'll be checking that out first. How's everything back at the Manor?"
"As well as can be expected, though Master Damian is quite insistent that he should have been allowed to accompany you."
"No," Bruce said adamantly. "Damian's not prepared to take on someone like Croc just yet."
"You and Master Dick should exercise caution as well. I know how difficult your last encounter with Croc was for you sir."
Bruce's grip tightened on the Batmobile's steering wheel. His last encounter with Croc had been the night of the Arkham Riot, when he'd been down in Croc's lair to get the spore samples that would counteract Dr. Young's TITAN formula. His encounter with Croc had been difficult yes, but it was what had happened before that still haunted him at night, almost two years later...
...He's still fighting off the effects of Crane's latest toxin as he chases the Rogue down into the sewers. It's more potent than it's ever been. He should of seen this coming he thinks. Crane had been too quiet since Nigma went into his coma. That always meant that he was up to something. Finally, he reaches the door that leads into Croc's lair and goes through it. He stops and slowly walks in. Scarecrow is in control tonight, not Crane. That makes the situation even more dangerous.
He sees Crane at the edge of the water, holding his pouch above it. "Stay back!" He cries out, his usually deep voice high and tinged with mania. "Or this goes into the water supply!" He dangles the bag over the edge and Bruce pauses. There's no reasoning with him at this point. Any scraps of human decency that Crane had ever had had gone with Nigma. Bruce slowly begins to reach for a batarang from a back pouch on his belt.
"Don't! I warn you!" Crane shouts again. "There's enough toxin to drive Gotham mad with fear for a hundred years!"
"Don't do it Crane," Bruce says. Then he pulls the one card he thinks he has left, even if it disgusts him to do so. "Edward is still out there Jonathan. Will you doom him too?"
For a moment, Crane hesitates. "Edward..." he says. Then his voice hardens. "You took him from me. You"ll pay for that. This whole goddamn city will pay for that!" He raises the pouch over the water again and Bruce reaches behind his belt. He'll only have one shot, he needs to make it count-
Suddenly something rises from the water and grabs onto Crane. Bruce realizes it's Croc. Croc raises the scrawny man above his head and the pouch falls harmlessly onto the ground. Bruce races to pick it up before firing the batarang at Croc's shock collar. The collar goes off, shocking Croc, but he does not let go of Crane. With a growl, he plunges back into the murky depths, taking Crane with him.
Bruce should go after them. He's not sure what Croc intends to do with Crane, but he has to stop him. He's about to dive into the water when the Earth above him shakes. The TITAN infected plants are still growing. He needs to get the spores for the antidote or everyone on this island will die, to say nothing of what Joker will do if he gets into Gotham City. But if he doesn't go in, Jonathan Crane may die. One life, vs hundreds, potentially thousands... He takes one last look at the water, then he continues into the lair...
...That was the last time anyone had seen or heard from Jonathan Crane. As far as Gotham and the rest of the world was concerned, the man was dead. Bruce sighed. He should have been more resistant to the fear toxin. He should have been quicker to disarm Crane. He should have gone after Croc. Every death that happened on his watch, no matter whose it was, was his responsibility.
"Are you alright Sir? You've been quiet."
Bruce shook off the memory and focused back on the road. "I'm fine. I'll check in again when I meet with Dick." Bruce shut off the intercom and prepared to make the turn into the Bowery. Then his car phone rang. Bruce narrowed his eyes. That couldn't be Alfred or Barbara. He pressed the talk button to answer the phone. "Yes?"
"Bruce?"
Bruce's eyebrows raised under the cowl. "Selina? What is it?"
"I need to see you."
The almost desperate tone in her voice immediately set Bruce on edge. Selina's never desperate. "What's wrong?"
"It's Eddie. I think he's in real trouble."
Not Nigma. Not now. What could he have possibly gotten up to-Croc. Did Nigma-
"You look like Hell," is the first thing Selina says when he staggers into her apartment. He should go back to Wayne Manor to rest, but he needed to see her first. Selina can sense something deeper than exhaustion brought him here. "Bruce. What's wrong?"
Bruce takes a breath. "Jonathan Crane's dead."
Selina's eyes widen. "What? How?"
"I chased him down into Croc's lair. He was dangling a pouch of fear toxin over the water. Croc grabbed him and dragged him under." He should have gone after them. He knows now he had time. Why didn't he?
Selina sinks onto her couch. "Jesus..." her hand comes up to her mouth as she gasps. "Oh God! Bruce! Eddie! How am I going to tell Eddie?"
Bruce shook his head. "Where are you?"
"I'm on the roof of the Iceberg Lounge."
Bruce made a sharp u-turn. "I'll be there in ten minutes."
Selina was waiting alone on the roof of the Iceberg Lounge, just as she said she'd be. She looked visibly relieved when she saw Bruce as he approached. "Hey handsome."
Bruce wished he could take the time to exchange pleasantries with her. "What happened with Nigma?"
Selina sighed. "He's gone Bruce. He's not at his apartment or his office and he hasn't answered his phone for over 24 hours." Selina's eyes softened slightly. "When I was by his apartment earlier, he had a box of news clipping about Crane out on his coffee table. He's gone after Croc Bruce. I know it."
Bruce knew she was right. He remembered when Selina told him about Edward's reaction when she informed him about what had happened to Crane. He should have told Tim or Dick to check on him when they'd gotten word about Croc's escape. "When was the last time anyone saw or spoke to him?"
"Yesterday morning," she answered. "We didn't know he was gone until earlier this afternoon."
So Edward had potentially been gone for over 24 hours. Bruce narrowed his eyes. He could be anywhere underneath Gotham by now. He might be dead. He clenched his fist. He should have never let Croc take Crane. He should have kept a closer eye on Edward. He should have done better by both of them, but he didn't and Crane was dead. And Edward potentially was too.
He felt Selina's hand on his shoulder. "Bruce," she said gently. "What happened to Crane wasn't your fault."
"I'm responsible for it Selina. I could have done more to prevent it. I should have gone after Croc."
"Bruce, the whole island was going to Hell, you'd just been exposed to enough fear toxin to drive ten people insane and you were on Croc's home turf. If you'd gone after them, you would have died." She gently reached up to cup Bruce's chin. "What happened to Crane was horrible, but he knew the risks going down there. You can't make yourself responsible for everything. We can't bring Crane back, but we can still save Eddie."
She was right. Edward's safety was the priority now. He reached up to take her hand. "I'll find him Selina," he promised. "If Edward's down there, I'll find him before it's too late."
Selina withdrew her hand and smiled. "I know," she said. "I'm coming with you."
"Selina," Bruce warned. "This will be dangerous."
"Oh really?" Selina drawled. "Going down into the sewers to chase Killer Croc will be dangerous? You don't say." Her face grew serious. "Eddie's my friend. If we find him before Croc does, I'm one of the only people around who might be able to talk sense into him. We both know he won't listen to you."
Bruce didn't like the idea of Selina coming with him, but he conceded the point. "Alright, but be careful."
"Relax," she said, sauntering towards the edge of the rooftop. "I'll just grab Eddie and get out. I'll leave the fighting to you. "
Nightwing was waiting by the entrance to the Old Blue Line Bowery Station when Bruce pulled up in the Batmobile. He gave Bruce a quick nod of acknowledgement then did a double take when he saw Selina exit the vehicle. She gave him a small wave. "Hi Boy Wonder."
Nightwing looked over to Bruce. "You wanna fill me in?"
Bruce locked down the Batmobile and walked over to Nightwing. "Nigma's gone after Croc," he explained. "We need to find him before he finds Croc."
Nightwing's eyes went wide under his domino mask. "Aw jeez..." He looked back towards Selina, who had joined him by the entrance. "I take it you're here to try to save Eddie from himself?"
Selina stretched her arms out above her head. "Try the key word there." She glanced at the entrance. "Ready boys?"
Nightwing stepped to the side and swept his arms towards the entrance "After you my Lady." Selina chuckled a bit and stepped through, followed by Bruce and Nightwing. The three descended the steps into the old station and walked out onto the old platform. Bruce winced as he saw the homeless gathered around meager fires, barely looking up at them as they passed. Budget cuts had forced the city to close down much of the shelters. Bruce would have to see that some of the Wayne Charity Foundation's budget went towards opening new ones. The three passed one older man who was sitting by the edge of the platform. He looked up at them with vague curiosity.
"You here for Croc or for Riddler?"
Selina looked sharply down at the man. "You saw Riddler? When?"
"Last night," the man answered. "Told him Croc was there. I warned him not to go down there. He didn't listen though."
Bruce narrowed his eyes. Edward had been down here for 24 hours. They needed to hurry. He jumped onto the tracks and gestured for Selina and Nightwing to follow him.
As they walked down the tunnel, the faint light from the fires on the platform completely dimmed. Bruce pulled a small flashlight out of a pocket on his belt and clicked it on, illuminating the tunnel before them. For a while, they walked on in silence, until Nightwing broke it.
"Going up against Croc...what's Eddie thinking? He's got to know he doesn't stand a chance against him."
"He's not thinking," Selina answered. "He's not being rational." She clucked her tongue. "He never really was rational where Spooky was concerned."
"I'll say," Nightwing muttered. "I never understood what he saw in Crane."
"Neither did I," Selina admitted. "But Eddie loved Crane. He still does love him. It doesn't matter what I think. And I think Spooky loved him back, in his own way. It wasn't like Joker and Harley."
Crane was a misanthrope who enjoyed the terror he caused, despite a token attempt to pass off his actions as 'pure research.' He disregarded all other concerns, including his health, as something completely beneath his notice. If there had been anyone on Earth that Jonathan Crane had truly cared for though, it was Edward Nigma. His always precarious grip on himself had slipped for good after that last fight in Metropolis, when Edward had finally bitten off more than he could chew. Bruce had been at that battle with the rest of the League, but he didn't see Edward go down. It wasn't until after the fight that he saw Shining Knight, standing over Edward's limp body. He almost didn't recognize him through all the blood. Shining Knight was still holding the bloody mace, stammering out apologies as Bruce had cradled Edward's body and yelled for a medic. Bruce suspected that Edward's earlier dip in the Lazarus Pit was the only reason he survived, even if his memories couldn't be salvaged. The only thing that comforted Bruce was the fact that Crane hadn't been there to witness it. Regardless, that had been the start of his final, fatal descent. Bruce felt his grip on his flashlight tighten. He'd had a hand in everything that had happened to Crane and Edward in the last few years. That was something he'd never forgive himself for.
Bruce paused when he noticed something up ahead. An open manhole, with the lid cast aside. He slowly walked over to the open space and shone his light down. It was about a six foot drop, with railings. Bruce went down first, shining his light to make sure there were no surprises waiting for them. When he saw it was clear, he gestured for Dick and Selina to follow him.
"You think Eddie was here?" Selina asked when she joined him.
"Yes," Bruce answered. "Let's keep going."
"He's been down here for a whole day," Nightwing said. "What's he been doing? Do you think he found Croc?"
"He could have gotten lost down here," Selina argued. "Maybe we'll run into him."
Bruce doubted that and he'd be surprised if Selina actually believed that.
"So what's the plan if we do find him?" Nightwing asked.
"I'm going to try to talk him into going back up with me," Selina answered. "And if he doesn't listen, I'm going to need your help hog-tying him and dragging him back up."
Nightwing snorted. "Great. Just like old times. I'm sure he'll really appreciate it too."
Bruce's attention was caught by the sound of water. That and the smell told them that they were in the sewers proper.
"I really hate when we have to chase after Croc," Nightwing complained, holding his nose. "Just once, can't he hide out in a bakery, or a field of flowers or something?"
"Eddie must be driven to find him," Selina added. "That's the only reason he'd be down here."
Bruce didn't respond, leading the way forward. If Croc was down here, they needed to be on the alert.
"Either of you boys have the time?"
Nightwing pulled up the sleeve of his costume. "12:30. We've been down here for about four hours, I don't think we're in the Bowery anymore."
Bruce accessed the palm top computer embedded in his right glove. "According to my schematics, we're under the Diamond District."
"You think Eddie made it this far?" Nightwing asked.
"He's got to be down here somewhere," Selina said. "You don't happen to have a tracking device on Eddie, do you?"
"No." Bruce said. He'd considered putting one in Ed's cane when they worked together on the Sharp case last year, but he'd decided against it. There was too much of a risk that Edward would have found out and be set off by it and there was a part of Bruce that had wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt. With everything that had happened since then, Bruce wished that he had. He'd promised himself when Edward had woken up and announced his intent to reform, that he'd do what he could to ensure he stayed reformed...
...The office Edward had chosen to set up shop at is small, but Bruce supposes it will do. He'd decided that morning to pay the former rogue a visit as Bruce Wayne. There were things he needed to know about Edward, things he didn't think he'd find out as easily if he went as Batman. The door to what he assumes is the waiting room was wide open, so Bruce walks in. He raises an eyebrow at the open boxes that litter the floor. "Hello?" he calls out. "Anyone home?"
He hears a noise and Edward appears, walking out of the room just beyond the waiting room. His eyes widen in recognition when he sees him and Bruce tenses. The moment of truth. Does Edward remember that Bruce Wayne is Batman?
"I know your face," Edward murmurs. Then a smile appears on his face, one that doesn't quite reach his eyes. "Of course! You're Bruce Wayne!"
This is a good sign, Bruce thinks, but he's still cautious as he reaches out to shake his hand. "Indeed I am."
Edward takes his hand and shakes it, more out of a desire to be polite Bruce thinks. "I'm sorry for the mess in here. I just moved in."
"No worries," Bruce says. "I can only imagine how busy you must be."
Edward picks up one of the boxes on the floor and sets it on what will probably become a secretary's desk. "So," he says in a jovial tone that sounds just a bit forced, "How can I help the wealthiest man in Gotham today?" A look passes on Edward's face. "You're not here to settle a score with me are you? I don't remember if I've ever robbed you or not."
Either Edward is doing a very good job of mocking him, or he legitimately doesn't remember. Bruce is beginning to think it's the latter. Time to do another test. "I actually came to ask for your help."
Edward's eyes widen in genuine surprise then. "You-my help?" He recovers and claps his hands together. "Well then! What kind of conundrum do you have for me?"
Bruce takes the opportunity to study the man before him. Edward's put on weight since he's been released, looking healthier than Bruce had seen him for a long time. His eyes no longer have that manic gleam Bruce remembers from the last few encounters they'd had before Metropolis, but Bruce thinks they're a bit duller than they used to be. The purple shades obscure them somewhat. Bruce clears his throat and continues. "We've been having a rash of break ins at Wayne Towers in the past two weeks. I'd like you to take a look into it." Bruce had already figured out that a security guard was part of a robbery ring and was assisting his friends in breaking in. He wants to see if Edward can come to the same conclusion. He wants to know how sharp his mind still is.
Edward pulls out a pad of paper and a pencil from the desk drawer and jots this down. "Break ins...Do you have security footage?"
"Yes. You'll have access to everything you might need." Bruce pulls out his checkbook and writes an amount down. "I think this should about cover it."
Edward takes the check from Bruce's hand and his eyes almost bug out at the amount. "This-Mr. Wayne I-" Edward passes the check back. "This is too much. I can't accept it."
Selina told Bruce that Edward wasn't quite his old self just yet. Now Bruce fully believes it. "Mr. Nigma," he says. "Edward. Please. I want you to take it."
Edward eyes the check for a long moment, then takes it and puts it in his pocket quickly, as if he thinks that Bruce will change his mind and demand it back. "I'll get started on the case right away," he says. The man wets his lip and continues. "You must have a lot of options Mr. Wayne. Why me? I can't imagine your board at Wayne Enterprises would be too happy about this."
"No, the probably won't be," Bruce admits. "But I believe you really do want a fresh start. And I believe in second chances..."
"Bruce!"
Selina's voice jolted him out of his memory. Before he could respond, she rushed past him, running to what looks like a scrap of cloth on the ground about ten feet from them. A green scrap of cloth. Bruce rushed to catch up to Selina as she picked it up off the ground. When he was next to her, he got a closer look. It was Edward's green bowler hat. "He was here," Selina said. "I knew it."
"So what happened?" Nightwing asked. "Did Croc...?"
Bruce shone the flashlight around the immediate area. No blood. The water wasn't deep enough in this part of the sewer for Croc to have dragged him under either. His lair must be close by. "Come on," he said. "Stay behind me." He can hear Selina unfurl her whip and Dick ready his fighting sticks. The three of them continued on down the sewer. About ten minutes later, they hit a junction.
"Which way?" Selina asked.
"It's too dangerous to split up," Bruce said. He looked back down at his glove. The signal was weak down here, but he could just make out the map of the sewer system that Oracle had uploaded to the server for such an occasion. "The left leads to deeper water. The right's a dead end. We should go left."
Before either of his companions could reply, they heard a long, loud scream from the left. It was one of the most terrible noises Bruce had ever heard. It was a cry of pain, anger, and agony. Dick and Selina's eyes were both wide. "Was that Eddie?" Dick asked.
Selina stood frozen for a moment. "Oh my God! EDDIE!"
Without a word, Bruce ran towards the direction the cry had come from at top speed. He barely heard Dick and Selina behind him in full pursuit. He thought about Metropolis. He thought about the night Jonathan Crane had died. He would not fail Edward again.

Patient Zero (Full Text)
A/N: Hi guys, like I said here is the full text of this story. This one started as a one shot for halloween week, my little attempt at the zombie trope as you can see. I wanna thank the dear Anon that came into the ask box to request a second part and who shared ideas to continue the story. Kudos to you!! This is the final result and I hope you guys liked it. I know it’s not the final everyone expected but idk i felt this had to end like this...questions, complaints, complitents, whatever, you can hit it guys! and please let me know what you think about it. :) It was a pleasure to write this for you.
Lena Luthor x Zombie!Reader//Word Count: 5,612
00:00. Play.
00:02. Hello, Lena...[Sigh]
Your face was the first thing Lena saw after clicking on the video file in her mail. It had been a long time since you two had seen each other. You had been close since boarding school and, even after you left to med school, you kept working together in small projects. She remembered that time when you had tried your own research project to cure cancer at Jack's garage. She admitted she always had a thing for you but then she had met Jack. So you remained good friends. Then you lost contact after she moved to National City to run L-Corp. She tried to run a company and you tried to become the next nobel laureate. You didn't talk as much as you used to but she always remembered you with a soft smile.
00:05. If you are watching this, it means two things. One, that I managed to sent this video with top secret information to you, and two, that I... that something has gone terribly wrong in my lab.
At first, she didn't believe it. It was just not possible. Only when she read the files, things started to make some sense. After she finished reading those documents for the fifth time, the true horror of the situation shocked her. She needed a moment to think and she started to pace around her office. It was a lot to process and a lot more to do. If she was going to help, she also needed help.
00:23. For the past two years I've been working on a project to undermine the growth of cell populations and genetic material in different organisms. The research's purpose was to develop a treatment for people with cell growth disorders. Even a cure if possible[Pause]Six months ago we finally tested a serum. Forty people participated in the clinical trials. The results were particularly significant and optimistic. No serious side effects were reported...[Heavy sight] Until two months ago.
"Shouldn't we be talking with someone in the World Health Organization?" Kara questioned. For her, it looked more like some kind of conspiracy theory. "I mean, this seems strange."
"And what if they try to cover it?" Lena tried to convince her. "These companies are even worst when it comes to cover their mistakes. (Y/N) sent me this video because it was the only way to ensure someone else knew about this." She was truly worried about the situation, even more about you. "If Supergirl goes to check the activity in the labs at least we would know if there's something to worry about."
Kara sighted. "Ok, I will contact her but, in the meantime, let's try to find out what else is happening."
00:57. When we ran the test again[Pause]We discovered the pathogen had evolved, unlike anything we had seen. In the time it took to run the tests, there was a complete reversion on the serum's effects... The company has practically done nothing at this point, we're in lock down, alone, and they will try to erase the whole thing, for sure. [Rising voice] Heck, they will let us die in here...
Once Supergirl finished scanning the area, she flew directly to L-Corp to inform Lena about her findings. She didn't wanted to believe it but you had told the truth. If they did nothing, there was a chance the situation could worsen.
"The upper levels are mostly offices but they were empty, there was nothing in the building. It's almost as if they vanished."
"Did you find the laboratories?" Lena asked concerned.
"They are seven levels underground." Supergirl's voice was cautious. "Only the sixth level seems to still be active."
"Could you see what was in there?" The uncertainty was killing her.
"You need to start working on those formulas." Supergirl's face was grim.
01:25. The serum, it's transforming them... I-It doesn't seem like they are human anymore... We tried to contain them as best as we could but now we are the ones trapped in here. We've been trying to work on an antidote but I don't think I will be able to finish it...
Lena had been looking at the monitors in the DEO with the information regarding patient zero. A subject test that had been diagnosed with carcinoid cancer just before you started the clinical trials. This person had been the first one to present anomalies and was used as the basis to develop the antidote. Alex had worked along side Lena for three days straight until she was sure the antidote would work.
"This could have been one of the greatest discoveries in modern medicine, you know?" Lena said nostalgic.
"Dr. (Y/L/N) was really aiming for that nobel." Alex would have responded more impressed than she sounded, if it weren't for the imminent danger such discovery had brought.
1:45. I'm sorry I'm dragging you into this mess but I don't trust anyone else. The information I sent you, everything is there. Documents, procedures, test results, formulas... [Deep breath] Our own work is there. It will be easy for a genius like you to crack the code. And if anything, we already found our patient zero. If you can make it, if you can reach us, it all will be ready for testing.
"We're all in position and ready to enter." Alex spoke from over the comms.
"Remember to be careful. It's been seven days since the look down, we don't know what's inside." Replied J'onn.
"We will." Supergirl assured and turned to Lena to check up on her. "You ready?"
She was far from ready. A group of ten people, along with Alex and Supergirl, had been assigned to go into this mission. The objective was to deliver the antidote but, if necessary, the team had been given orders to eliminate any thread inside. Lena couldn't stand idly if there was a chance to find you, so she practically added herself to the group. No one could talk her out of it.
"Ready." She said with the chills crawling up on her spine.
02:11. [Light chuckle] Too much for the cure of cancer, right?...
When the team reached the sixth level, there was no sign of you, but everything else so far seemed like a scene from a horror movie. Of the forty four people that were inside, ten were still trapped in several rooms, like rabid animals, covered in blood and hitting themselves against the glass walls. Fifteen had already died of starvation and, their rotted bodies, were scattered in all directions. Nine had been stopped by Supergirl, and seven had to be shoot by the team and their bodies remained motionless on the floor. It had took eight bullets each to put them down. Two were still alive, if she could call it that, trying to crawl their way towards them.
After the shock of the scene, they finally moved towards the place they were looking for. There was a containment room in which, according to your plans of the lab, the patient zero was left. Lena walked feeling a knot of fear in her throat.
They reached the room and all they could see was a figure standing in the middle of the room. There was no movement. The figure, Lena inquired, was one of the scientist as it was dressed in a white coat. She hoped that person could still be saved. But the figure turned around, and something in her told her it was a lost case.
She saw a haggard face, unrecognizable, bloodshot eyes streaming with black blood. It was a terrifying vision. Then she looked at the attire, noticing something on the coat pocket.
02:17. [Heavy sigh]Dear Lord, I really hope you're watching this...
The identification card had a name she recognized and realization hit her like a train wreck. Fear overwhelming her once again. She didn't want to believe it. It was just not possible.
02:29. Stop.
(Y/N) (Y/L/N). You were patient zero.
00:00. Play.
00:03. [Y/N]: [Camera shaking] Say 'hello' to the camera! [Laughing] [Lena]: [Laughing] Hi, camera! [Jack]: Hello [Smiling and waving]
Four years ago, Jack, Lena, and you had been spending weekends and days off at Jack's garage doing an impossible research. The three of you were well aware about the implications and obstacles of trying to find, the so called, cancer cure. Even when your college research had come down to hardly a few insignificant discoveries, you three had been more than content to spend those days together. You were friends and nothing mattered to you more than keeping that friendship. But now, Jack was dead, you were part of the living dead, and Lena had no idea what to do to help you.
It had been barely two days since the DEO team, Supergirl, and she had found you, and other forty three people, in your research labs. Thanks to whatever authority, they had been able to move you from the company's labs to another facility of the DEO. Only eleven trial subjects, including you, were now contained in separated cells. There were ongoing investigations about their identity, medical history, and health conditions regarding the clinical trials. A team of biomedical engineers was working, along Lena, to revert the effects of the serum, as the antidote she had synthesized only managed to stop the development of the symptoms.
She had spent those two days looking over and over again at your research, your formulas, notes, your own medical records; whatever that could help her understand how the serum had worked on the cancer cells. They had also recovered some of your personal items from the lab and your department, your cellphone and laptop. Lena had checked every archive you had regarding this project, and something more. You had kept photos and videos of those early days. She watched that video with nostalgia, like she could find an answer in it but unable to find it. She just didn't want to lose you too.
00:11. [Y/N]: [Clearing throat] Ladies and gentlemen, you're watching America's Next Top Scientist, starring your fave engineers, Jack Spheer, genius Lena Luthor and (Y/N) (Y/L/N). [Jack]: Wait, how's that Lena gets to be called genius?
"Why are you still here?" Kara came into the lab, pulling Lena away from her distractions. "I thought J'onn had sent you home."
"Sorry, I lost track of time." She responded with a smile that didn't reach her eyes and put your laptop aside.
"Any news?" Kara stepped in, walking towards the table in which Lena had been working non-stop for the last four days.
"Not really," she sighted, "only what we already have but..."
"What is it?" Kara furrowed her eyebrows when she heard Lena's voice trail off.
Lena shook her head. "There's something off with the medical records, and (Y/N)'s last clinical tests are from three years ago."
"But, didn't (Y/N) have sent you everything?"
Lena remembered that day at her office in L-Corp, when you had sent the video and the research files had popped into her email. Everything is there. You remembered you saying, there was no reason to doubt that now. It will be easy for a genius like you to crack the code. Maybe it was Lena's exhausted brain but those last words resonated in her mind. Every document and piece of information you had sent had been considerably accessible, you hadn't put passwords or security codes... There was one somewhere.
"Where's Winn?" Lena snapped out of her thoughts.
00:28: [Y/N]: Because she is. [Lena]: [Laughing lightly] Mm-hmm, don't contradict the presenter, Jack. [Y/N]: Yeah, get with the program, Spheer. [Jack]: Alright, alright [Rising his hands and smiling] so, what's todays challenge?
Winn had spent a whole day corroborating every single piece of information you had provided. Time that Lena was told to use to rest. She reluctantly left the facility with the condition that Winn would call her once he could find anything. He had promised to do so and, twenty seven hours later, Lena was again on her way to the DEO. When she arrived, Alex, Supergirl, J'onn and Winn were already gathered on a computer room, waiting for her. Several screens were displaying all medical test results from the forty people involved in the medical trials. She looked at the screens not really understanding what was happening until Winn started to explain.
"Ok, so, I know the priority here is trying to find a cure for whatever is happening with our fellas in solitary confinement-" He started.
"Mr. Schott, to the point, please." J'onn stared at him.
"Sir, yes, sir." Winn cleared his throat. "Ok, so when we checked the documents (Y/N) sent, what we were looking for was essentially all medical information we could gather for the antidote, right? However, we never stopped to check if the information in previous test results was right."
"Yeah, that was not important at the moment." Replied Alex, crossing her arms. "We already knew the trial subjects were cancer patients and the diagnosis was confirmed in other records."
"What I mean is we never checked their personal information. Or the information stored by the labs and hospitals where their studies were made. Look." He typed something from his tablet and the test results moved on the screens.
"Why are there two copies of the same tests?" Asked Supergirl confused. Lena was the first to notice the differences.
"The numbers in the patients ID, age, birth date, and social security number are different." She took a step towards the screens.
"Yes, and I also found this." The screen changed one more time, showing what appeared to be the main menu of an app. "This is part of the system program used by the laboratory, and this is where they keep all records of research and clinical trials. And guess what? Their latest investigation is encrypted."
Lena stood there, watching the screens, when it all came rushing to her. This was what she was looking for.
00:43. [Lena]: Figure out how to stop the metastasis of cancer cells? [Y/N]: Yep [Small pause] that and stop Jack from blowing up something else in his garage [Laughing]
Winn had spent another day deciphering the encryption system the lab had used to shield their information. J'onn had tried to get the intel directly from the people that ran the company but it had been useless. As far as they were concern, this case was nonexistent. Eleven people were still in airlock cells, waiting motionless with haggard faces and famished bodies. Only when an alarm went off or other person came in close proximity to them, they seemed to react. The black blood had stopped leaking from their eyes and, according to their recent test, the cancer cells in their bodies didn't present further changes or development.
Whatever was happening inside of them had stopped. They hoped they would stay that way. Meanwhile, Alex, Lena and the biomedical engineers, were still fighting for a solution to counteracting the serum, in hopes that the patients could be saved. But if there's something you cannot fight no matter how strong, intelligent, or brave you think you are, is Mother Nature. No one had expected this to ever happen again. The earth beneath them started to shake, slight movements becoming violent in a second. Everyone at the DEO started to move looking for a safe place, as cracks appeared from the ground and the lights swung, and flickered, from the ceiling. Lena and the doctors stayed in the lab while J'onn, Alex, and Winn were the first ones to reach the central controls after the alarms went off.
"Not again." Alex growled.
"The emergency system is working but when the power comes back it will reboot everything." Winn was typing as fast as he could on the computers.
"You need to stop that." Said J'onn with a strong voice. A minute later, the system rebooted.
00:53. [Lena]: [Laughing in the background] [Jack]: Oh no, you didn't! [Y/N]: Oh yes, I did [Laughing].
The alarms were still ringing when the energy came back. Lena and the engineers were the first ones to see eleven emaciated bodies run loose. What had happened at your lab was happening again inside the DEO. She only had a second to recover and seal the room's door near to her, as a figure was fast approaching. Even the glass door was closed, the figure didn't slow its pace and hit the door with its head. At the impact, Lena took a step back, raising her hands as if to protect herself.
She had lived this moment before but now she was the one trapped inside the room. The patient hit the glass once more but this time with angry fists. She wanted so desperately to get away but fear had woken up inside of her, paralyzing her in place. That instant of fear was enough for her brain to notice an evident fact she had tried to ignore. She looked at the figure and felt the cold chills crawl through her entire body. Oh, what she would give to stop it all.
00:58. Stop.
"(Y/N)." Lena's voice wavered.
00:00. Play.
00:01. [Y/N]: ...here, this is for prosperity [Smiling] Say cheese! [Lena]: [Smiling] Wait, you're recording! [Laughing] [Y/N]: [Loud laughter] Oh, sorry. Just let me- [Camera shaking and focusing on the floor] [Lena]: No, no. Leave it! [Camera focusing on Lena] It works for prosperity either way.
Her voice was more of a whisper, lost among the sound of strident alarms. Her heart was pounding so hard, she could hear the beating in her hears. She looked at you, at your factions, your famished figure. There was barely a shadow of who you were hiding behind bloodshot eyes and, as if a faint moment of recognition passed between you two, you stopped hitting the glass doors. She saw you there, a smiling face and bright eyes, as if you had never changed.
For a moment, she saw her friend and she wanted so desperately to make that moment last. She knew someone was calling her name but it was like a distant sound. She then saw you turning, to follow the path the others had taken, and disappeared. Moments later everything was quiet again.
"Lena? Lena! Can you hear me?"
"Miss Luthor!" One of the doctors snapped her out of her trance. Lena saw her pointing at a laptop with Alex's face.
"Alex? What's happening?" She put herself in front of the laptop, ready to receive news or instructions about what to do. The moment before still lingering in her mind.
"Is everybody alright?" Alex asked first.
"Yes, we locked ourselves in the lab, the patients are out." Lena answered.
"We know. We are locked too in the control room."
"What's gonna happen now?"
"We need to move, immediately." Alex wouldn't take no for an answer.
"What do you mean? Why?" Lena was more than just worried now. She couldn't leave the investigation like this, so suddenly.
"All the patients are here near the main rooms." Alex made a pause. She wanted to put it in the best light but there was no possible way. She sighted. "But they are rabid, Lena, even with the alarms off they keep hitting doors and walls."
"Are you sure? The patients could only be reacting to your presence." Lena tried to argue.
"No, this is different. We moved out of their vision line, they know we were still inside."
"Can't your agents move them back to containment?"
"There was a malfunction in the cells due to the earthquake, we cannot put them back there, and we don't have the necessary equipment to prevent direct contact. If this is like the first time we cannot risk it going out there just like that and the rescue team cannot pull us out in that kind of chaos." Lena looked at her team. They were paralyzed with fear after hearing that.
"Ok, how are we doing this?" She wasn't going to put them in danger.
00:16. [Y/N]: [Behind camera] Alright. Then tell me, how does it feel to start your last year at boarding school? [Lena]: Ugh, horrible. [Y/N]: [Behind camera] Why? Aren't you glad this torture will be over soon? [Lena]: I am but it also makes me sad. [Y/N]: [Behind camera] Why? [Lena]: Cause after graduation we'll have to say goodbye to each other.
"You didn't have to stay last, you know?" Alex said after sealing the lab doors.
"You didn't have to come for me, you know?" Lena was typing on one of the DEO computers.
"As if." Alex approached her and pulled a gun for her. "Kara would kill me if I leave to your own devices. Now, do you know how to use one of these?" She watched Lena take the gun and raise an eyebrow. She then remembered the little incident with Corben. "Alright."
"Where are the others?" Lena asked and moved to another computer.
"Moving to the safe zone." Alex was looking through the glass panels for any sign of movement. "J'onn pulled a distraction but we have to move fast. We are the last ones."
"Ok, I just need a minute." She finished typing and a 3D model of different cells appeared on the screen.
"What's this?" Alex went closer to her to see what was keeping her still in here.
"I ran a few simulations for a modified formula of the antidote we made first."
"We don't have time to make it." Alex said softly, she knew what Lena was trying to do.
"I know." Lena watched the screen. “But I also needed to know if there is a chance."
There was never anything certain about finding an antidote and yet Lena was able to find a counteragent for the serum. She hadn't given up hope and Alex was certain she wouldn't until every resource at her disposal was used. If Kara had been in a similar position, and there were times she was, she would do everything in her hands to save her. She understood that and wished she could find a way to bring you back. Alex put a gently hand on her shoulder.
"Crap." Alex turned quickly around and whispered through her teeth. The sound of bangs and screeched voices fast approaching. "We gotta move, now."
00:35. [Y/N]: [Behind camera] Oh c'mon, that's not gonna to happen. We have plans, remember? [Lena]: Me ending world hunger and you discovering the cure of cancer? [Y/N]: [Behind camera] Yes [Cheerful] and we'll be working together to do that. Sounds nice, don't you think?
A minute of silence. That's all they needed. Silence to let you pass. Alex and Lena were sited behind a control panel, hiding and trying to make themselves smaller, like such thing could help them. The was no other noise but your dragging feet on the concert, your erratic breathing, and the small grunts that sometimes came out of your mouth. Lena had to put a hand over her mouth to stop a little yelp when she heard you smashing a computer on the other side of the room.
Alex's mind was racing, she tried to remain calm and control her breath. The escape wasn't going to be easy. Their guns were useless at the moment. Lena had been pretty resolute about it, the patients needed to say alive, sort of, especially patient zero. Not to mention the sound of gunshots could attract the other ten that were all over the place. If they wanted to be out of that room they needed to be as sneaky as possible. They would have to hover all the way down through the dormitory rooms, the containment rooms, the infirmary, and the storage units. All the way to the back of the building were the others were waiting.
Alex considered their options, hide or run. The first one was the safest. The rest of the patients seemed to be busy looking for anything in other places and, as long as they stayed down, patient zero couldn't find them. The second option, running, was a bit trickier. Alex was sure they could go from point A to point B in a matter of minutes. They only needed to run, as fast as they could, and only turn around to shot if the patients were getting too close.
What worried Alex the most, however, was the lack of ammunition. Between Lena and her, they had thirty bullets. If things got out of control and they needed to use them with the patients, Alex calculated, they would have to use at least three with each one of them. Last time, she remembered, they had to use eight. The numbers were not in their favor.
Both women listened attentively. There was no more noise except for their strained breathing. Lena turned to look at Alex, determination and resolve in her eyes. Whatever Alex considered was best, she would follow her lead. Alex understood the gesture and nodded, if they had to do something, they had to do it know that they were alone. Alex raised three fingers and mouthed "run". Lena nodded.
Three. They were preparing themselves, getting into position. Two. Lena held her gun tightly, feeling a cold sweat run in her forehead. One. Time to run for their lives.
00:52. [Lena]: We are going to change the world, uh? [Smiling] [Y/N]: [Behind camera with a louder voice] Yeah! That's the spirit! [Lena]: We just have to survive five years of college, remember? [Laughing] [Y/N]: [Behind camera] [Grumble] Ugh, true. You got it easy, you're a literal genius. [Curious tone] What was your IQ, again? [Lena]: Please, you just need to study a bit more and stop procrastinating. [Raising an eyebrow]
They had passed beyond the dormitories and the containment rooms, where they were able to dodge five of the loose patients. But six of them were still out there and they couldn't know exactly where. Later, when they reached the infirmary, they finally had to draw their guns towards the three raging and gaunt figures, who were looking for something to wreck.
Lena felt her heart about to explode with the adrenaline, as she pulled the trigger of her gun. Alex was always near her, doing the same, aiming at the patients. They couldn't think another thing as they tried to keep them at bay. The bullets were barely doing any damage and, Alex discovered, the only way to really stop them was to shot them in the head. Lena was not content with that but, after almost losing an arm, she realized it was for the best. They couldn't stay there any longer. Not like that.
After the third body stopped moving, they only wanted to take a second to breath, but they knew others would come after. The sound of gunshots was still lingering on the empty walls of the DEO and, they could listen clearly, some guttural cries getting louder. Alex made the math. Six bullets. That's all they had and it was barely enough if they could take the shots. Lena knew it too. Two patients were still loose around them and they had to keep moving. They only had to pass the storage units and they could be safe.
01:12. [Y/N]: [Behind camera] Easy to say, I'm probably gonna be a zombie during finals [Grumble] Can't somebody just shot me now? [Lena]: Oh, no. You are not allowed to die before we change the world. Remember?
Her muscles were burning and the fear was crawling through her whole body again. Seeing your face filled with blood and delirium as you chased them through that corridor had been the last straw.
Alex had to shoot first, two bullets that only managed to hit the patient that was behind you. Neither of you stopped. Another bullet from Lena's gun hit your chest. You kept running. Alex pulled the trigger. Finally stopping the emaciated body that had followed you. Two bullets for patient zero, that's all that was left.
Lena had recognized you. How she didn't know. There was nothing in you now that could have told her you were her friend turned into a monster. Only that little shadow that refused to leave the back of your eyes remained. She shot you once on your chest. The bullet passing near your heart making you stop a few meters away from them. They were close to the safe zone. Only one room and they could reach it.
But you didn't want to stop. You couldn't. Lena knew she had to use that last bullet if they were going to make it. She didn't want to shot. You were the patient zero. Part of the key to the cure was still in you. She knew she needed you alive to keep gathering samples and making tests.
You kept moving, slowly and with difficulty but sill advancing. Bloodshot eyes were looking at her. A starved, disfigured body trying to reach her. A voice no longer human screaming at her. She didn't want to shot. Part of her telling her it was still you. Not all gone. She needed you to stay alive so you could see the fruit of your work.
You kept moving. Hands pressing your chest as black blood poured from the hole in it. Then, a faint second of recognition and acknowledgment. It was no longer you who was inside. She didn't want to shot. Parts of her heart breaking. You were all gone now. She aimed at your head and pulled the trigger.
01:23. [Y/N]: [Behind camera] [Sigh] Ok, but they better give us that Noble after that. [Lena]: [Laughing] You're always so humble. [Y/N]: [Behind camera] [Nonchalant tone] I know, I know [Both laughing]
Three years ago, you arrived one night at National City General Hospital with fever, nausea and abdominal pain. At first, you had though it was food poisoning, or something similar, but the abdominal pain became constant and worse. The doctors had taken you immediately to surgery to perform a common procedure, but what they found had been a bit unusual. Appendicitis had been the first diagnosis. A carcinoid tumor, the second. Distant spread in liver and lungs of carcinoid tumors, the third.
Two and a half years ago, you started to work on the project on your own. Moved by a fear you never acknowledged, you searched and researched everything you could. You spent days and nights reading investigation papers, research reports, medical journals, test results. You had even taken that little research Jack, Lena, and you had done during college years. This work had become the priority and you were determined to find a solution.
A year after the cancer diagnosis you started working on it in the company's labs. It had been an almost impossible task to convince investors and the company board to let you start this project. In the past decade there had been barely a few significant discoveries about the disease and the idea itself of the cure of cancer had been ridiculous for them. But you show them that, even if the cure for cancer was impossible to accomplish, the company could still gain from your patents and discoveries. You assured them, with a smile, the reward was bigger than the risk.
Six months ago you had injected thirty nine people and yourself with the serum. Trial after trial in your investigation had leaded to that moment. The selected patients were given a dose of the serum and were asked to document their symptoms and medical diagnosis with their general doctors. During four months there was nothing but positive results. Your team was euphoric, the company was satisfied. You were hopeful.
Two months ago you realized it all had back fired. Your team reunited the other thirty nine patients to run the tests again. There cancer cells were not only increasing at a faster rate but they were changing. The serum was no longer a remedy but a catalyst.
One month ago, the company knew it was a lost case. The patients were getting worst and you had started to feel the symptoms yourself. For the first time ever, you didn't curse your slow growing cancer, as it had somehow relented the serum progress. You had to fix it somehow. You had to do it fast.
Two weeks ago, the company had left you and your team alone inside the labs. They saw your mistake and they wanted it all gone. The small hopes you had been all vanished, replaced by the dread you had tried to avoid since your diagnosis. You screamed, you cried, and tried to remember your life and the good in it. If you were going to die anyway, you wanted to leave with the fond memories about your family and friends. The love you shared with them. The adventures. Your hopes to change the world. And Lena.
Two weeks ago, you took all the files and documents, and modified them, knowing the company wouldn't let them leak that easily, and put yourself in front of a camera. Not because there was a solution, a cure, an antidote, but because there was someone out there. Someone away from this hellhole that could make things better.
00:00. [Recording]
00:02. Hello, Lena...
You started and a little hope returned to you. After all, she was going to change the world.
01:34. Stop.
Lena's voice was soft and trembling, like you were dreaming and she was afraid to wake you up.
But your dream had turned into a nightmare from which there was no wakening.
"(Y/N)." She said after the last bullet went straight to your head.
You didn't move again.

Summer 2017 Anime: Final Impressions
My excuse for this being so late is that I was waiting for The Reflection to end, but also school is kicking my ass and depriving me of my will to live lol. The summer was a mysterious season, with shows I was very hyped about turning out to be a disappointment, whereas shows I expected to be utter trash ended being quite entertaining, and even a sequel I thought was bullet proof self-destructed in the end. So let’s get down to business to defeat the huns (I just watched Mulan yesterday, I can’t help myself I love that movie too much, I swear I won’t do it again... too soon)
1. Boku no Hero Academia 2: Season one of HeroAca was an entertaining and very well executed example of why the Shonen Jump formula still works. Season two is absolutely fantastic in every possible way. The pacing was good, the animation was excellent (praiseth be BONES) and this second part of the story did an outstanding job in fleshing out its extended ensemble cast, something many shonen manga fail to do. It also has the balls to question its own idealized hero society and even bring in some complex topics regarding radicalization. It’s just an overall really good show with an extremely lovable cast, and I can’t wait for season 3. Easily takes the gold for this season.
2. Fate/Apocrypha: I can’t believe I’m saying this, but Fate might be my favorite new show this season. It’s not without its deficiencies –Jeanne pretty much does nothing but run around and be Shocked and Confused, Palurdo-kun is a boring potato, we don’t really feel like we know any of the characters- but it’s definitely better written and less pretentious than UBW and although the characters are shallowly written, they’re pretty likable and share interesting dynamics. Heck, in the latest episode (I wrote this like two weeks ago oops) I even felt bad for Vlad Tepes of all people. Also Astolfo and Mordred are too excellent to exist.
3. Made in Abyss: This one was a lot of folks’ fave anime of the season, and it is indeed a very unique and marvelous production in many different senses. It has an original main idea, with imaginative creatures and landscapes, lovable characters with interesting dynamics and very well placed twists and turns to keep the audience engaged. It meanders quite a bit in the middle, and I couldn’t help wonder what purpose exactly Ozen’s training served when Reg and Riko were proved to be hugely unprepared to face the deeper layers of the Abyss, but the final few chapters were superb in every way. I do however have to take points off it because of how it casually throws around the idea of extreme physical punishment for children and the mangaka’s gross pedo omorashi fetish. I’ve heard it was severely toned down for the anime and it was still uncomfortable to watch, I distinctly remember at least three different scenes about Riko peeing herself. It was unfortunately recurring and notorious enough to damage my impression of the show permanently, but it’s still a highlight in an otherwise dry season.
4. Kakegurui: I didn’t have a lot of expectations for this show, but it turned out to be pretty neat trashy entertainment. The whole ahegao aesthetic wasn’t much my thing, but other than that it was a lot of fun, Yumeko was a unique and interesting protagonist, and her wildcard personality made the results of the bets not necessarily predictable. I’ll say the final episode, which was an anime original, was quite a disappointment because it basically achieved nothing in terms of plot or character development –except maybe for Suzui. You could tell they rushed through some plot elements and struggled with the pacing overall, and I’d say the episode with the girl with the gun fetish was kind of a waste, not because of the icky concept itself, but because the bet was pretty boring and kind of achieved nothing. Otherwise it was pretty fun and Sayokan’s opening was A+++
5. Katsugeki Touken Ranbu: Well I actually finished this one, as opposed to Hanamaru, so that’s already a small victory. It still wasn’t the show I wanted it to be and specially the faceless, aimless quality of the villains makes it pretty much impossible to get invested in the plot, but I really liked the direction they took in the last few episodes. Episodes 9 and 10 were specially brilliant. I think Horikawa’s defection could’ve been handled in a much more interesting way, but of course since all of the characters are meant to be sold as merchandise, there were things they weren’t ever gonna do, so I’ll take what I can get. Hopefully other Tourabu projects will follow along the same vein and explore the different swords in regards to their relationships with their former masters, hopefully adding more shades of gray to those dynamics. east three
6. Shoukoku no Altair: It had a slow start, but the show really picked up steam with the conflict over the Sultanlus and Mahmut orchestrating a coup. I still think the show loses potential by making the German Empire so unequivocally evil; a more daring writer would’ve made out a more nuanced conflict in which Torqye’s obsession with controlling the four sultanlus could be as manipulative and imperialistic as the Empire’s own ambitions. Still, it was a unique portrayal of a political conflict that was resolved quite creatively and in a very exciting and satisfying manner in spite of there not being a lot of action. I was definitely hyped seeing the four new sultans gathered together at the end before departing to their respective lands.
7. Shingeki no Bahamut: Virgin Soul: I find myself quite conflicted about what to do with Virgin Soul. I loved most of the show. It had some hiccups here and there, but overall, it had been one of my favorite series of the season –and potentially the year- Until the last three episodes. Since Mugaro’s murder, the series took a nosedive and it just never recovered. Though it might be more accurate to say that the problems the writing had been dragging along became unavoidable and, predictably, they were incapable of resolving them properly. Especially regarding Charioce. There almost seems to be a disconnect between the first and second halves, because the second half completely sweeps under the rug most of Charioce’s evil deeds. His motivations were awfully predictable and were insufficient to explain all the tyrannical shit he did in the first half. In light of how everything ended, Jean and Nina’s trip to the land of the gods turned out to be completely inconsequential. Even Mugaro’s death was completely meaningless. I assume it was meant to be a catalyst to send the Gods and Demons to fight the Humans, but then that confrontation didn’t come to real fruition because of the last minute Bahamut plot. And what was the biggest slap to us all was the final reveal that “Bahamut isn’t dead after all”. So the status quo is completely restored and the entire show was pointless. It’s frustrating because I can almost touch the threads of a great story –Nina and Charioce’s final dance would’ve been beautiful if they had earned it-, but in the end it’s reduced to a disappointing pile of missed potential.
8. Isekai Shokudo: Definitely meandered for at least one third (maybe even half) of its run, overdoing it with the over glorification of the most boring foods imaginable (no matter how much glossy effects and sparkles you put on it, there is no way to make natto on rice look luxurious and appetizing), but it was still a fairly pleasant show to watch, and the final episode had a few reveals that neatly wrapped up a few “plot points”, particularly the reveal of the chef’s ancestry and how that connects to the otherworldly visitants. I think it could’ve been a lot better, but I’m also not horrified by what it ended up being, which I consider a victory this season (looks at my top 3 from the pre-season anticipation post and weeps)
9. The Reflection: What a weird show. I have very mixed but not very strong feelings about it. The first episode was really bad, but it developed a few interesting ideas along the way. I think the crux of it though, was that it had more potential than the writers could develop in 12 episodes. My biggest disappointment is that Stan Lee wasn’t the final villain and in fact, his character didn’t really do a lot. Though I guess that could be applied to most of the characters, specially the villains. The final confrontation reeked of X-Men ripoff. Incidentally, I-Guy’s story and how that came to a climax at the finale was probably the strongest part of the show. I think it’s worth a watch, if only for how weird it is, even if it is ultimately a shrug overall. The ending –as in, the literal final scene- was terrible though. They should know this is never getting a sequel unless Stan Lee funds it with his own pocket money, so that ending makes noooo sense.
10. Centaur no Nayami: What a weird show. Why do we have so many weird shows this season. I was unsure about whether to put this one above or underneath The Reflection, Although in overall enjoyment, I liked this one more I gave it minus points because of all the icky fetishy stuff (is it too late to make another Miyazaki joke?). Also I needed more snake-girl centric episodes. Snake girl was too good, she was the best girl of the season and I will fight you about it. Idek what to say about this because it was so weird, which was good at times, and bad very bad at other times. Definitely not what I expected.
11. Re:Creators: I’ve already kind of talked passingly about this show’s multitude of problems so I won’t go too deep into it here. I think the show itself kind of plays itself with this final dialogue. Supposedly, director Ei Aoki said this was supposed to symbolize “how sometimes even if you try your hardest you still fail”, but that doesn’t excuse 20 episodes of floundering around with characters that got stunted development arcs, often resolved with the power of convenience, and that served no real purpose to the plot. Except for Magane who was a plot convenience walking, to the point she goes off scott free after literally murdering half a dozen people, but I guess it’s fine because she helped Sota to solve his manpain in the end. It really is a shame because the concept itself was fascinating, but the execution made it just a giant masturbatory “aren’t we anime makers the greatest” fest it just didn’t manage to be as cool as it believed itself to be.
12. Hitorijime my Hero: I guess it wasn’t worse than Super Lovers and that’s about the best kind of praise I can offer this show. Even if you look past the extremely questionable aspect of both relationships (idek which is worse, the teacher that wants to fuck his student or the guy that blackmails the other guy to have sex with him. At least neither is worse than the guy that grooms his own little brother?????) the show just isn’t good. It treads familiar melodrama plot points, but they’re executed so mechanically they fail to make any impact. What little drama there is, it’s terribly forced, which in tail causes the resolutions to be flat and anticlimactic. The production values are also butt, most of the time the characters look like they have balloon heads. Will we ever get the adaptation of an actually good BL manga that we deserve? Will I die before there is a Honto Yajuu anime?
13. Welcome to the Ballroom: Sigh, what is left to be said about Welcome to the Ballroom? I think calling it the biggest disappointment of the season would be an understatement. Although the introduction of Chinatsu has made the gender dynamics slightly more tolerable, it’s still too little to truly throw a wrench in a show that has systematically treated every woman in its cast like second-class citizens. I’ll keep watching the second half, and at least there seems to be an intent to occasionally use actual dance music –not that the sound editing does anything to favor that music, and the latest episode had more silence than music, but it’s a step-. I’d love it if Chinatsu and Tatara turned into a revolutionary, unique pair, with the woman playing the role of the leader. Now that would be the fix this show needs. Alas, I’m pretty sure that’s not going to happen, and that their relationship arc will be about Tatara learning to be a proper leader and Chinatsu a proper follower, so teasing us with Chinatsu’s leading proficiencies seems borderline cruel. We get it show, you hate women. Can you at least show me any actual animated dancing before the 24 episodes are over?
14. Vatican Miracle Examiner: This show is such a bizarre, surreal watch because it makes not a single ounce of sense whilst taking itself insanely seriously. It’s one of the many weird, confusing shows this season, but it’s probably the one that’s less self-aware. Although Ballroom is way more unpleasant and a way bigger disappointment, at least it has a coherent story (a terrible one, but coherent) and an attempt at good production values. Vatican Miracle Examiner doesn’t have any of those. But hey, it has a serial killer Santa Claus, rainbow cocaine Jesus and criogenized Adolf Hitler sperm, so who’s the real winner here?
I think I’ve checked out all the shows I intended to check out for the fall season but there are a few that I’m still undecided about, so I’ll give them a week or so beore I make my somewhat definitive watchlist

HARRIET (2019) MOVIE REVIEW
☆.。.:*・°☆.。.:*・°☆.。.:*・°☆.。.:*・°☆
OVERALL SCORE ★★★☆☆
GENERAL ENJOYMENT ★★★☆☆
EMOTIONAL ★★★☆☆
MUSIC ★★★★☆
CINEMATOGRAPHY ★★★☆☆
SET PIECES/STYLING ★★★★☆
Today I travelled 32 minutes by bus to see the movie Harriet in theatres, by myself because it was a Friday night and all of my friends and roommates were either going home or busy. I had to travel so far because only one theatre in my general area was showing it. Still, I really wanted to watch it, so I made the journey. I’m not even sure why - I really like watching movies in theatres and was in the mood for one, since I haven’t seen one in so long, but I hadn’t even heard about the movie until maybe last week when I saw it show up on listings. But something drew me to it. I never learned much about Harriet Tubman other than she was a runaway slave who was part of the Underground railroad. I learned a lot about slavery and how it was wrong, of course - but it was still very dry, very quick, and not very sympathetic. I wanted to know more (and enjoy a movie) so I went.
Now, onto the actual movie. Harriet is directed by Kasi Lemmons and stars Cynthia Erivo as Harriet Tubman, or Araminta Ross. It begins first with her life as a slave, but almost immediately she escapes after the death of her slave owner. She manages to make it to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and we see how she is integrated into this new life. She’s struggling, mainly with the guilt and loneliness of leaving her friends, family, and the only life she’s ever known, so she goes back to her plantation and ends up helping more slaves escape. She realises she not only is quite gifted at rescuing these people, but begins to understand that it’s something she wants - was almost born - to do. But as we know, especially with this topic, free is never truly free, because it always comes with a price.
This movie is not amazing, or the best movie I’ve ever seen, but it had quite a lot to offer in inspiration and helping to show a part of history that, at least in my experience of a white American who was taught in majority white schools, is regarded as acknowledged but never really understood. Within the movie, I never felt truly in the moment or incredibly engaged with what was going on - but this is an autobiography covering a very large portion of Harriet Tubman’s life. I was still invested in the characters, their fates and their actions, and there was always a good amount of suspension and drama, but there was a lot that was left up to the audience to decide - time gaps, character’s emotions, developing relationships. It’s not a movie that will spoon feed you, which is good, but there is once or twice where something happens that makes you feel weird and removed you from the story- why is she saying that, what’s so important about this? As stated, I knew almost nothing about Harriet before watching the movie, so I was quite surprised about a couple of things as well. The movie was quite religion-focused, which I had not been expecting, but it is true to Harriet Tubman’s life, as she was very religious and it impacted her life as an abolitionist.
Something I didn’t like, however, was that there was a strange focus on her relationship with Gideon, the son of her original slave owner. He acted as the antagonist of the movie - the bad guy who was trying to capture her, but also a sort of one sided (on his part) love interest? I felt like he and his role in general was very unnecessary. It was what made the movie good, not great. It made it seem as though they were trying to push drama and intrigue, that it couldn’t be only about Harriet vs Slavery (which I think is a mistake, as doing so would have led it down a very interesting path) but there had to be a villain, they had to make this guy be interested in her and chase her down specifically. It devalued it, and made it seem formulaic and hallmark rather than truly arthouse or thought-provoking.
These flaws were all mostly overshadowed by what I did like about the movie, which boils down to my own personal connection and take away from it. It Impacted me, made me read the Wikipedia article about Harriet Tubman and reevaluate my life. There were a lot of great and emotional scenes that made you truly understand the struggle the slaves went through, opened your eyes to the injustice and cruelty and this absolute horrible scourge in American history. It made you think about the true meaning of freedom, what it means to be human and a woman and an African American (and for those things that you are not, you sympathized with their struggle and understood their thoughts and actions though of course you could never truly know what it was like). For me personally, it was very inspiring. It didn’t drag on and on about how amazing Harriet was (although it’s a movie about someone quite amazing, so of course there’s going to be a bit of that) but seeing her struggle and determination, you couldn’t help but be in awe. It pushed a message of pushing boundaries and not letting anyone stop you - and while some of it was attributed to the idea of “God showed me the way”, it wasn’t shoved down your throat or pushed as the only reason Harriet Tubman could do the things she did.
Over all, I thought this movie was generally entertaining and a good watch. I would definitely recommend this movie because of its importance in spreading understanding about this topic and Harriet Tubman specifically. If you want to learn more about this topic, it’s a good starting point, and if you want to watch something inspiring or that will change the way you think, I would recommend it even if you don’t care about history or the topic. I think this movie was just that- a good introduction, but I think Harriet Tubman and other African-American men and women deserve better for the incredible weight of their accomplishments.
SPOILERS AHEAD!! ------------------------------------------------------------------------
As I stated, I knew nothing about Harriet Tubman before watching this other than the basics. So, at first, I was really put off by the whole “premonition” aspect, especially later on in the movie where it becomes specific enough that she would be “told” to go left instead of straight. I thought it was kind of outrageous, that they thought audiences couldn’t possibly enjoy a movie about history without there being some “science fiction”, “magical abilities” aspect. After reading about Harriet Tubman, I realize that this is actually something she did or that happened to her in life, so it doesn’t bother me as much as it did as I was watching. It seemed very over the top because it was also marked by this cadence of piano and magical like jingle, but I did enjoy the way it sounded in a weird way. It also was vague enough that when you saw these flashes, you as the audience didn’t immediately know “x was going to happen”, and you only really started to understand as it was happening. It did well to keep the tension up for the watcher.
We are introduced to Harriet’s life very abruptly, dropped into the world to figure out for ourselves what is going on, and I think that approach was best for a movie where so many of its audience already know the basics. Of course, it did come with a few flaws - I didn’t realize who her family actually was except for her mother and the sister who was sold further down south until the end of the movie/I read more about her. I wasn’t sure, at first, how to feel about her wanting to run away so suddenly - I think it might have been more impactful to have shown what escaping meant both for her, personally, as well as the repercussions. It seemed so easy for her to just up and leave - and while I realize the movie wasn’t focused so much on that aspect, I think it missed a big chance in really giving this idea of slaves escaping more weight. Slaves running away was a very big thing, a very dangerous thing to do, and a lot of slaves, sadly, did not make it. It seemed such an easy thing when what Harriet Tubman and all fugitive slaves did was extraordinary.
Gideon’s involvement in the whole movie is, as far as I know (which, as stated, is not much) very dramatized for Hollywood’s benefit, I think. This idea that he’s obsessed with her, almost in love with her as he says later in the movie, is so absolutely cringey. It could have just been left as her former owner attempting to get her back for not only running away but taking so many of his slaves with her, but it was made to be some sort of love dynamic? I just thought it could have easily been left out. Slavery, and the ignorance and hatred that came with it, was so prevalent in this time that it almost diminishes it’s importance to have this one person be the “worst of it all”, and especially for him to have a special interest and reason to be chasing after Harriet. Almost everyone, at this time, was out to get them, everyone was against them; but in the movie it seemed only like this one specific group.
I was actually very surprised to see Janelle Monae in this film, although it was a welcome sight. I think the dichotomy and relationship between them worked very well - Marie, born free, and Harriet, only recently become free. Scenes like Marie seeing Harriet’s scars, and Harriet questioning Marie about what it’s like to be free and how she can’t know what Harriet’s been through, really resonated with me. How it must feel for Harriet to know there are people like Marie that are free, when her and her family are treated so horribly. How, then, could Harriet sit idly by? How could she see that freedom and happiness is possible, and not follow the urge to help those she cares about most?
Harriet going back for her husband, only to find he had married another woman, actually came as quite a shock to me. Cynthia Ervo’s acting in this scene, and throughout the movie, was incredible. In the lack of the story’s own indication as to what Harriet was feeling, Cynthia Ervo was still somehow able to show between the lines, express such subtle emotions and thoughts that you knew how Harriet felt and sympathized with her. It was a joy to watch, as well as to hear when she sang. The subtle weaving of music into the movie, from the historically-accurate idea that slaves sang to communicate messages as well as the way it was used to connect scenes and heighten emotional moments, was used quite well.
Another thing I wish to mention was that the styling for this movie was amazing. I don’t know how historically accurate it was or anything like that, but the outfits that Harriet and others (Marie, Gideon, Still) had were so beautiful. I think it added a small but memorable touch to the movie - she was usually dressed in darks and neutrals, but in the final scenes, where she faces Gideon, she is dressed in an emboldened red.
I think this movie could have been a lot more, and I had been hoping for it to be a lot more, but it wasn’t bad. It was rather bland, melodramatic at times, and very “Hollywood”, but I think it is an important movie for representation and educating people on these topics. It changes the way you think, and I think it was worth the watch.
