new stevetony crack fic. pls hold in ur gasps of shock
(count olaf voice) hello, hello, hello...i've spent every minute of free time i've had over the past three days (not a lot bc i am in a state of constant not-freedom) writing a crack fic in the style of a chatlog. and i mean "style" quite literally. that is why it's taken THREE days. it's a soulmate au set in highschool. stevetony bc who else would i look at html for. btw i am never going into the html version of ao3 ever again. i don't mean to be so explicitly bourgeoisie but rich text is where it's at. anyway, here's the fic. please heed the notes in the beginning so that the formatting works for u. PLEASE also do not be intimidated by the word count. it's much shorter than it seems.
'Cause It's You and Me (and All of the People) on AO3 | 8,947 | Rated T
Steve and Tony discover that they're soulmates in their senior year of high school. As they wrestle with this realisation and try to build out a genuine relationship in the backdrop of high school nonsense and college admissions stress, they're met with a ridiculous number of hurdles in the form of every friend in their circle recruiting them as "fake dates". (A.K.A. the high school soulmates AU where they keep getting pulled into fake dating schemes for other people, told in a chatlog / texting format)
#i have been binging asoue again#so if anyone wants asoue fic#i could be persuaded#steve could pull off a very good forlorn lemony except it's post-cw au and beatrice ie tony is still alive#my writing#my fics#stevetony

hey yall here i am doing this again but hopefully this time the world will align with me and i’ll be able to actually stay on?? i promise yall nothing should get in my way of being on like the last times i’ve done one of these i swear!! anyway here is a long list of wanted plots and wanted canon ships that i’ve been dying to play so like this if you want to do any of these and i’ll hit you up!! thanks !!
wanted plots:
someone give me a plot based on the book rebecca by daphne du maurier like pls i want the secrets and mystery and intrigue!! this young naive girl meets this brooding older man while working as a personal assistant and they fall in love and she thinks everything will be perfect but when they get back to his mansion after the honeymoon she realizes there’s some big mystery with what happened with his last wife and the house holds more secrets than she thought
something based on true blood cuz i binged some of it awhile ago and still want smth !! gimme small town southern gothic vibes where vampires are coming out of coffin and the prejudice against them, the drama of other supernaturals, vamp night clubs, etc. honestly a small group or mumu on this would be awesome too
similarly give me a plot based on salems lot !! muse a is an author who briefly lived in the town and after the death of his wife comes back to write a novel about the town and there they meet muse b, the local who is just dying to get off. they immediately hit it off and start a relationship, too bad right as they begin to fall in love vampires move into town and everything goes to shit.
something based on from dusk till dawn (the movie and series) where a sweet christian girl gets caught up in some criminals shit and they have to work together to defeat the actual evil at hand
silent hill !! man goes to a mysterious town looking for his daughter and finds a townie and they work together to figure out what the fuck is going on
give me a plot based slightly on veronica mars where its an outcast PI and the asshole popular guy and they always are bickering and are known enemies at school but when a mutual friend gets murdered they have to work together to solve the case and maybe fall in love while doing it
(a lot of these will have the actual canon ships at the end if you want that instead idk !!)
also a plot based on pride and prejudice cuz uh drama and messy and bickering and slow burn yeah!!
A MUMU OF UNTIL DAWN CHARACTERS BUT JUST THEM BEING FRIENDS AND DRAMA THIS SMALL GROUP WOULD BE FUN
cupid and psyche!!
pls give me a plot based on roswell ( i’ve only seen the original and won’t watch the new one so idk how similar they are!!) it could be exactly like the show where its people living in roswell, regular local figures out someone they know their entire life is an alien or it could be like the character is a scientist and catches them ?? idk but alien shit = fun
in general give me plots with supernatural creatures and events!! whether its two supernatural creatures, one supernatural one human idc. also angels and demons and humans and all that drama!! hunters too maybe?? idk
yeah hey so what about a dirty dancing plot where muse a goes to a holiday resort with their wealthy family and notices the cute dance instructor muse b and they decide to enter a dance competition and its all sneaking around from the parents who won’t approve and all the other snooty guests and muse b tryna get muse a to loosen up and its just cute shit okay!! thank you
a plot where muse a is like totally in love with their roommates boyfriend and they always hang out while they are there visiting and its awkward and painful and ye drama
ur a vampire who i met at a club and was dancing on and i woke up in ur bed with marks all over my neck and i’m terrified but also kinda fucking turned on and i don’t know what to do
dynamics like kathryn and sebastian from cruel intentions
royalty plots
stranger things plots or inspired plots or mumus!!
wanted canon ships: bold is who i would want to play
sansa stark x theon greyjoy (game of thrones)
allie pressman x harry bingham (the society)
ellington feint x lemony snicket (asoue/atwq)
kit snicket x count olaf (asoue)
lisa garland x harry mason (silent hill)
susan norton x ben mears (salems lot)
pacifica northwest x dipper pines (gravity falls)
kate fuller x seth or richie gecko (from dusk till dawn)
kate bishop x peter parker (mcu/marvel comics)
yelena belova x idk !! anyone u want !! (marvel comics)
terra markov x garfield logan (teen titans/dc comics)

If I’m not mistaken this ASOUE meme was made by @lastchancegeneralstore, so a quick thanks to them for the opportunity!
Favorite book in the series: The Miserable Mill, believe it or not. Far be it from being the best book in the series, of course, but I’ve got a very soft spot in my heart for it.
When did you read them for the first time: I must have been about 13, because I was in middle school when I really got into it for the first time. Funnily enough, I never actually made it through the whole series -- I got to maybe the first couple chapters of The Grim Grotto, kinda figured out the rest of the story from various online sources, then forgot everything that happened in each book until I finally read them all properly. If I could go back and do it properly, I definitely would.
Favorite character: Jacques Snicket has stolen my heart. Other all-stars include Charles, Hector, and Uncle Monty.
Kit/Dewey or Kit/Olaf: Kit/Dewey 100%. A good way to make me sad is to remind me that she kept talking and asking about him in The End without knowing he was dead.
Favorite Quagmire: I like all three, though Duncan seems to be sort of underappreciated compared to his brother and sister. Therefore, I shall pick up the slack.--
Favorite Baudelaire: I like all three of them too! I’ll say Klaus because he’s so salty and sassy but at the same time I think he cries the most out of all three kids, and I can appreciate a child character who behaves in ways a child might despite his maturity and intelligence.
Favorite Snicket: Jacques, naturally. ;y
Did you see the 2004 movie in theaters: No, though I saw it pretty soon after it came out on DVD. I mostly remember the ads for it playing on Nickelodeon.
Thoughts about the movie: I think it’s enjoyable enough as a standalone film, but as an adaptation of a franchise it was a little sloppy. The allusions to VFD are too scarce for a fan of the series to enjoy and too vague for newcomers to understand, and Carrey’s performance was really overhyped in commercials and was played much more comedically than I think it needed to be. Overall it could have done much better, but it wasn’t so terrible I wouldn’t watch it again.
Favorite quote: From Who Could That Be At This Hour?: "If someone wanted to torture me until I told them a critical piece of information, all they would have to do is get my socks wet.” because sAME
Have you ever met Daniel Handler: No, but I would love to.
Thoughts about ATWQ: IT’S SO GOOD. Like ASOUE was a great series I enjoyed very much, but ATWQ is different in its style and substance that it’s a nice combination of fresh and familiar. 11/10 would read again
Favorite ATWQ character: I love so many of the characters, but if I had to choose a number one spot it’d be a three-way tie between Moxie Mallahan, Dashiell Qwerty, and Jake Hix.
Favorite moment in ASOUE: Oh there’s definitely a few. Klaus saving Charles from the saw, Friday telling Olaf off and the other islanders not buying his disguise, any time an adult was kind and gentle to the children, and Kit driving like a maniac then casually mentioning her pregnancy are some good ones. One I wouldn’t say was quite my favorite but one that was definitely impactful was Dewey’s death. I had been reading the series over Skype to my friend, and it was the first time I’d ever read through the series in its entirety when I finally got to that book. I knew it was coming, I knew how and when and why it was going to happen. And yet, as the words started leaving my mouth, I could hear and feel myself getting choked up over a guy I’d known was a goner for years. I didn’t cry, but it was the only moment I really got physically emotional over something that happened in the series.
Would you ever get an eye tattoo: This is the only tattoo I have ever seriously considered getting.
Fire-fighter or Fire-starter: Fire-fighter, if only to be the really edgy morally ambiguous one who has no issue suggesting we just assassinate the villains who pose a legitimate threat to people.
Least favorite character: Is Poe a cliche answer? I don’t care, that guy sucked. Dishonorable mention goes to Stew Mitchum.
Did the Quagmires survive: YES, EVERYONE IN THAT HOT AIR MOBILE HOME DID
In your opinion, what is the great unknown: It’s very tempting to think it might have been the Bombinating Beast, though another interesting idea might be that it’s some sort of submarine. After all, having the Quagmires, Hector, and the Widdershins reuniting just to get gobbled up by some sea monster seems a little lame.
Did you like the way the series ended: I do wish a there had been more loose ends tied up, but I like how the ambiguity gives us opportunity to imagine where the Baudelaires went from there. The Beatrice Letters does a very good job of giving some slight insight as to what happened after they left the island, but not enough that we have any clear, concise answers.
What question do you most want answered by Handler: In the series proper and especially in ATWQ, there’s a lot of focus on Lemony’s relationship with Kit. Yet not nearly as much attention is paid to Jacques; the narrative of his death is kind of gleaned over in comparison to Kit’s, and he doesn’t even show up in ATWQ outside of sparse references. So my question is, what was the nature of Jacques and Lemony’s relationship both in childhood and adulthood? Jacques and Kit? How did his death affect them?
What are you most excited for about the Netflix series: MY SERIES IS FINALLY GETTING A PROPER, COMPLETE ADAPTATION
Binge watching or spacing out the episodes: I binged. I was a caveman for 8 hours the day it premiered. I will binge again when the second season is released.
I tag: @stuckonswan because she’s the only friend of mine regularly on here who has read the whole series--

ASOUE Survey
Favorite book in the series: The End When did you read them for the first time: I was about 8 or 9. I remember I was still waiting for books to come out, so the absolute oldest I could have been was 10 Favorite character: There are a lot of good options. Honestly, probably Lemony. I've been watching the series and haven't read the series in years (working on a reread rn), but Lemony narrating is so good. Kit/Dewey or Kit/Olaf: Kit/Olaf. The last book sealed the deal for me. Favorite Quagmire: No preference. Honestly, I barely remember them. Favorite Baudelaire: Violet, but I relate to Klaus much more Favorite Snicket: Lemony. Also, I don't remember the others very well. Did you see the 2004 movie in theaters: YES Thoughts about the movie: I loved it as a kid and still enjoy it now. I still have problems with it though. Frankensteining three books together didn't really work. Also, I feel like the casting/interpretation of Olaf was way off. But Billy Connolly and Meryl Streep both did so well and I love the movie for bringing me them as those characters. Favorite quote: “It's like walking up the stairs in the dark and think there's one more step than there is." And the rest of that description. It's very accurate. Have you ever met Daniel Handler: No, sadly. He seems pretty chill but also I think talking to him for long periods of time may possibly drive me up the wall. Thoughts about ATWQ: I haven’t read them Favorite ATWQ character: n/a Favorite moment in ASOUE: SPOILER: Olaf's death and the bits of backstory we get directly preceding it. The way this larger-than-life villain is brought to a human level. His death, for a character so terribly fantastical, is so mundane and it just strikes that we are all human and it doesn't matter what you were in life, death does not give two fucks. It will come for you just the same. I just bought the series to read again and I skipped to the end to see if it was as good as I remember it being ten years ago. It was better. Would you ever get an eye tattoo: Yeah, I think I would Fire-fighter or Fire-starter: TBD at a later date Least favorite character: I don't really remember. Again, haven't read the full series in years Did the Quagmires survive: Probably not In your opinion, what is the great unknown: No idea. Don't even remember it being mentioned. Did you like the way the series ended: Actually, yes. I thought it was absolutely perfect. I'm excited to read it again. What question do you most want answered by Handler: THE VFD BACKSTORY. I want to know all the Interpersonal dynamics, how the schism happened, who was close to who and how it changed afterward. Basically, I want the twenty-year-old tea to be spilled. What are you most excited for about the Netflix series: More. Everything is wonderful and done so well. I'm so excited for everything. Especially what other backstory we got now, bc I'm pretty sure we didn't get any Olaf backstory in The Miserable Mill, but Netflix added it. I'm all about that backstory. Binge watching or spacing out the episodes: Binge watching. No regrets. I've seen it all through at least three times, but I couldn't tell you how many times I've watched The Miserable Mill. Anyone who wants to do this, do it and tag me!

Anticipatory ASOUE Ask Before the Release of the Netflix Series
[Created by @lastchancegeneralstore bless you]
Favorite book in the series: THE WIDE WINDOW
When did you read them for the first time: My fourth grade teacher read us The Bad Beginning and I was instantly hooked!!
Favorite character: Oh God. The Baudelaires probably. I also have a soft spot for Hector because he reminds me of myself??? And he was very kind and comforting and interesting but pretty unhelpful for most of the book, until the end and I just really like that sort of redemption arc.
Kit/Dewey or Kit/Olaf: Kit and Dewey for sure.
Favorite Quagmire: Quigley because he’s a very nice but sneaky motherfucker and his name is Quigley Quagmire for goodness sakes
Favorite Baudelaire: This is blasphemous lol
Favorite Snicket: Jacques!
Did you see the 2004 movie in theaters: Yes! I have like no memory of it though, I just remember waiting for MONTHS for the DVD release
Thoughts about the movie: I like it! I mean I hated the way they butchered the plots, especially in The Reptile Room and how they omitted basically all of Violet’s inventions, but the aesthetic was wonderful, the casting was pretty great, and the music was perfect!
Favorite quote: “Tears are curious things for like earthquakes or puppet shows they can occur at any time, without any warning, and without any good reason.”
Have you ever met Daniel Handler: I haven’t, no!
Thoughts about ATWQ: I’m not finished the series yet, but it’s decent, no way as good as ASOUE, but good. I wish there was more reference to characters from ASOUE!
Favorite ATWQ character: The weird librarian. Unless he’s evil. I’ll get back to you on that one
Favorite moment in ASOUE: There’s a couple honestly
That scene in TRR when Violet’s trying to pick the lock on Stefano’s suitcase, so Klaus and Sunny have to create a diversion and fucking Mr. Poe is EXTRA AF
The entirety of The Wide Window
In TVV when they solve Isadora’s couplets
When Friday reads Olaf for filth in The End
Would you ever get an eye tattoo: Probably not but who knows down the line??
Fire-fighter or Fire-starter: Does anyone pick fire-starter for these ever haha
Least favorite character: Fiona.........
Did the Quagmires survive: Of course they did.
In your opinion, what is the great unknown: The Loch Ness monster just trying to get through her day
Did you like the way the series ended: In a way, yes, because it stayed true to the uncertainty of the whole series, but I feel like a couple more questions could have been answered. Like 2-3 more.
What question do you most want answered by Handler: What the sugar bowl was all about, or if it was even significant.
What are you most excited for about the Netflix series: Seeing everything come to life, especially past book 3! And knowing that we’re actually going to be able to see the rest of the books kow! Also that the fandom’s really going to pick up again, and we’ll have all this new material to discuss!
Binge watching or spacing out the episodes: I’m going to try and space them out a bit, at least over the weekend.
I’m really hoping to tag people but I’m not sure who’s done it already and who hasn’t, so I’m going to have a little look around first!
#If I forget...#Which is likely...#I mean I don't think it's necessary to be tagged it's kind of just a fun thing for anyone who considers themselves part of the fandom to do#But I'll try!!

Anticipatory ASOUE Ask Before the Release of the Netflix Series
[Created by @lastchancegeneralstore]
Favorite book in the series: Oof, it’s a tie between The Hostile Hospital and The Grim Grotto~
When did you read them for the first time: Oh, it was some time after I came back to the States… probably around 4th or 5th grade. I was very reluctant to read Harry Potter at first and ASOUE really hit well with my love of ‘you be the jury’ books and true crime nonfiction favorites, haha. I was hooked until Harry Potter got in there and then it was just something I grabbed when the newest book came out and I’d forget about it until the next one instead of obsessing.
Favorite character: Hmmm, does Lemony count? Ah, man, if he doesn’t then… Probably Klaus… or Fiona. Nah, Klaus. It’s definitely Klaus.
Kit/Dewey or Kit/Olaf: UHH, KIT/ELLINGTON, DUH
Favorite Quagmire: Quigley, of course. Can’t help it, he’ll always be my fave~
Favorite Baudelaire: Klaussss or maybe probably Violet. It’s a tough call, Klaus is so relatable, but Violet is a badass!!
Favorite Snicket: Nooo, don’t make me choose!! Lemony will always be my fave, but Kit and Jacques are so dear to me, too, gdi
Did you see the 2004 movie in theatres: Pfft, yes. 2 times, with my little brother who hadn’t read the books and was far less displeased than I was coming out of it…
Thoughts about the movie: Trust me, you don’t want to know what I think of the movie. All I can say is that I’m glad Professor Umbridge is no longer gonna be the face of Aunt Josephine for me anymore.
Favorite quote: “Literature doesn’t exactly have a strong mental health record.”
Have you ever met Daniel Handler: No, the closest I’ve come is living vicariously through @creirdyddlydd being his perfect choice of Ellington, tbh
Thoughts about ATWQ: Qwerty deserved better and how does a kid go free after killing a man with a kazoo in front of EVERYONE, including his daughter?? Someone, anyone, explain that to me
Favorite ATWQ Character: Pfft, Lemony, of course. What a little smartass
Favorite moment in ASOUE: I wanna say that bit in The Reptile Room where he just filled an ENTIRE page with “ever” over and over, to make it so VERY clear not to be dumb with electronic stuff.
Would you ever get an eye tattoo: I have seriously contemplated it in the past, but probably not.
Fire-fighter or Fire-starter: Firefighter…I would hope.
Least Favorite Character: Oh, geez. Maybe Carmelita? Idk, I actually quite liked almost all of the characters…
Did the Quagmires survive: ooooh, boy. Okay, so I have always been the one to theorize that AT LEAST Quigley survived. I thought it’d be ironic that the one they thought died actually survived while the other two got burned alive or something… I was a weird kid, I will admit, but I always liked that theory.
Did you like the way the series ended: Again, another thing you don’t want me to answer. In short, the answer is …meh. I would have preferred more answers, but that kinda goes along with the idea that this was just a small piece of a much larger puzzle, and there’s a lot more that we don’t know than just the unanswered questions from this series.
What question do you most want answered by Handler: Why did you do that to Kit? Why? And Qwerty, too, you know they didn’t deserve that, you jerkface! ALSO WHY DID YOU HAVE LEMONY KILL A MAN WITH A KAZOO IN FRONT OF ALL THOSE PEOPLE ON THE TRAIN WTh
What are you most excited about in the Netflix series: The Quagmires, probably. And I love that they are gonna go for that “suburban gothic” feel in this series, and I can’t wait to see how they’ll apply it to every setting in this series!!
Binge-watching or spacing out the episodes: Binging, of course. I get off work at midnight that Thursday so I’ll just be sitting and waiting for the series to pop up on netflix, honestly.
Alright, imma tag @creirdyddlydd and @jasmarie2100 anddddddd uhhhh @violist-yamaguchi and @serendipitous-fish

@lastchancegeneralstore ‘s asoue questionnaire! Tagged by my pal @mooncactus
favorite book in the series: Penultimate Peril! And Grim Grotto is second, probably
when did you read them for the first time: 5th grade, I think? So 2010ish
favorite character: Charles lmao. But also I love Esme and Kit and Jacques and Beatrice
kit/dewey or kit/olaf: KIT/OLAF like obviously it’s a terrible relationship but it’s SO INTERESTING
favorite quagmire: Isadora she’s my daughter and I love her
favorite baudelaire: Violet, I think! Or maybe Sunny
favorite snicket: Ignoring ATWQ, Kit. If I’m taking into account what we know of him from ATWQ, Lemony
did you see the 2004 movie in theaters: Nah lol, I was 3
thoughts about the movie: I have very few thoughts about the movie. It was fine on it’s own, but a crappy adaptation of an incredible series.
favorite quote: I love every single line in this series but ere are a few faves:
“Everyone, at some point in their lives, wakes up in the middle of the night with the feeling that they are all alone in the world, and that nobody loves them now and that nobody will ever love them, and that they will never have a decent night’s sleep again and will spend their lives wandering blearily around a loveless landscape, hoping desperately that their circumstances will improve, but suspecting, in their heart of hearts, that they will remain unloved forever. The best thing to do in these circumstances is to wake somebody else up, so that they can feel this way, too.”
“The world, no matter how monstrously it may be threatened, has never been known to succumb entirely.”
“This toast feels raw. Is it safe to eat raw toast?”
And then another one that I can’t find it’s about sadness and it’s incredible
have you ever met daniel handler: Tragically, no
thoughts about ATWQ: I would sell literally every single one of my possessions for ATWQ I love it with the entirety of my heart and I don’t think I’ve ever cried more at a book series
favorite ATWQ character: Ellington Feint and Cleo Knight! And I also have a deep, unending adoration for Moxie Mallahan
favorite moment in ASOUE: I love...when they’re in the library or whatever, and Esme is coming after them and it’s all terrifying except for the fact that she keeps getting STUCK because she has actual stiletto knives as HEELS. I’m sure there are tons that I love more but that’s the first one that comes to mind
would you ever get an eye tattoo: Probably not? I’d be more likely to get a quote fire-fighter or fire-starter: I would like to be a fire-fighter
least favorite character: Mr. Poe. I have never wanted to strangle a fictional character so much in my entire life
did the quagmires survive: Ye
in your opinion, what is the great unknown: ??? Who knows
did you like the way the series ended: Yeah I think so?
what question do you most want answered by handler: Huh. Um. Idk I want to know about the beginning of VFD, and what specifically caused the schism and also. Everything about Charles and Sir lmao
what are you most excited for about the netflix series: EVERYTHING!
binge watching or spacing out the episodes: Binge watching, as much as I can. I have school Friday, but as soon as I get home, I’m watching some and then I won’t be able to watch any Saturday but hopefully I’ll finish by Sunday
I don’t think I know anyone specifically who’s into ASOUE, but if you want to do this, say I tagged you!

asoue questionnaire
i found this in the tag and it looked like a Verifiably Fun Diversion so here we go
Favorite book in the series: the austere academy! i also really love the hostile hospital, it scared me as a kid but it’s grown on me since then
When did you read them for the first time: i read the first book in 4th grade when i was nine. i’m 26 now so this strange series has been a part of my life for almost two-thirds of it
Favorite character: VIOLET!!! all the baudelaires but especially violet!! violet has been my heroine since i read the first book. she is so smart and resourceful and protective of her siblings and i admired her perseverence. i also relate to klaus because i too was a Book Nerd as a child
Kit/Dewey or Kit/Olaf: the sheer tragedy of kit/olaf appeals to me but it’s not a very healthy relationship now is it. kit/dewey is also good
Favorite Quagmire: i never thought the quagmires got enough development but i always liked isadora
Favorite Baudelaire: violet......
Favorite Snicket: lemony!!
Did you see the 2004 movie in theaters: yes i went to see it with my family!!
Thoughts about the movie: i really enjoy the movie, it has a lot of flaws as an adaptation but as a movie it’s a lot of fun! the cast is fantastic, especially emily browning and billy connolly. i kind of wish they’d gone a little less steampunk-goth with the design, i love that aesthetic as much as anyone but asoue is meant to be less goth and more gothic if you know what i mean
Favorite quote: “If we wait until we’re ready, we’ll be waiting for the rest of our lives.”
Have you ever met Daniel Handler: yes i met him at the sons of norway in poulsbo when i was ten!! my parents got books signed for me but my sister got her own book signed so he told her, “you’re the only person in your family not named emily. you must be very lonely, perhaps you should run away” and that has been a running joke in my family for nigh on 16 years
Thoughts about ATWQ: i’ve only read the first two books but i like it! i love the noir tone and i like learning more about what being part of vfd is like
Favorite ATWQ character: lemony! of original atwq characters, i like theodora and the kids who drive the taxi
Favorite moment in ASOUE: the moment with violet and quigley on the ice shelf. i don’t even ship it really but the sweetness and the privacy that lemony gives them has always stuck with me
Would you ever get an eye tattoo: i will probably never get a tattoo but if i did a vfd tattoo would be the only possible choice. i’ve been seriously considering it lately but i don’t think it’s going to happen
Fire-fighter or Fire-starter: firefighter obviously. if i had the opportunity to join vfd i wouldn’t squander it by becoming evil
Least favorite character: i love them all but i get so mad at mr. poe
Did the Quagmires survive: i mean probably not but i’ve chosen since 2006 to believe they survived and i’m not going to stop now
In your opinion, what is the great unknown: it’s probably the bombinating beast but i prefer it as just a nebulous symbol of death
Did you like the way the series ended: i found it infuriating upon first read but it’s really grown on me. the religious themes are fascinating. i’m glad the baudelaires got to live in peace for a while before moving on to whatever else
What question do you most want answered by Handler: what happened to the quagmire triplets???
What are you most excited for about the Netflix series: the fact that next season they’re going to adapt the austere academy. the little teaser at the end of season 1 has got me HYPED AF. THE UNIFORMS!!! THE BUILDINGS!!!
Binge watching or spacing out the episodes: i binge-watched them all last night and it was the best decision i have ever made in my life. i have never binge-watched a television show before and i probably never will again until asoue season 2

@lastchancegeneralstore did a cool asoue questionnaire and i'm so gay for this series so take this. @mooncactus tagged me because of course she did. favorite book in the series: hostile hospital! it scared the absolute shit out of me as a kid so naturally it's my favorite now. when did you read them for the first time?: if moonie was 9 when the film came out then i was probably 10 then, and i had been reading them for a bit before that, so when I was eight or nine probably! favorite character: tbh... probably lemony kit/dewey or kit/olaf: kit/olaf all the way man wtf favorite quagmire: quigley is the only one dan ever fleshed out but i feel that given more time it would be isadora. i'm a writer too and she quotes sappho so she's my girl favorite baudelaire: when i was a baby it was absolutely violet (#growingupgay) but now it's klaus. i love how protective he is of his sisters and how he's always the one holding sunny and he's... such a shithead... favorite snicket: it was honestly kit before i read atwq but now it's lemony did you see the 2004 movie in theaters: yes! i begged my parents every single day until they took me. thoughts about the movie: pretty much moonie's thoughts exactly. great movie, godawful adaptation. the aesthetic of the film made me bald tho it's so beautiful and gothic and perfect favorite quote: this series is so strong when it comes to quotes so i don't have any for asoue. i DO however, have one from atwq which i intend to get tattooed: "[do the scary thing now,] get scared later." have you ever met daniel handler: no which is good because i would have literally no idea what to say to him thoughts about ATWQ: i adore it, though it didn't answer nearly as many questions as it could have and just made me upset that i now have more characters to fear for favorite ATWQ character: JAKE HIX IS MY ACTUAL SON AND I LOVE HIM SO GODDAMN MUCH HE WOULD ADORE SUNNY AND I HOPE TO GOD HE'S ALIVE SO HE CAN MEET HER ONE DAY favorite moment in ASOUE: coming from someone with no great attachment to quiglet, the moment where the two of them climb up the mountain and have that silent moment to themselves that lemony actually removes himself from was just... very sweetly done and i like it very much would you ever get an eye tattoo: GETTIN IT DONE THIS YEAR fire-fighter or fire-starter: a fighter, i would hope, but the series has shown time and again that the lines between these two are very blurred and in the end it depends on what's burning. least favorite character: i want to hold nero's head underwater for a looooong time did the quagmires survive: ...probably not. especially if the great unknown is what atwq implied it to be. in your opinion, what is the great unknown: atwq implies what it is pretty strongly but i... hate that? i think it's dumb. so i don't know, i just hope it's not That. did you like the way the series ended: it ended precisely as vaguely as i expected it to. (ideally i want dan to Warriors this bitch and never end it so lmfao) what question do you most want answered by handler: ARE JAKE AND CLEO MARRIED NOW. OR MORE IMPORTANTLY, LIKE, ALIVE. ALSO WHEN IS THE BEATRICE SNICKET SERIES COMIN OUT I SEE U HANDLER what are you most excited for about the netflix series: the fact that it's like real...... and happening....... binge watching or spacing out the episodes: i don't work friday so take a guess tagging: @creirdyddlydd does anyone else i follow die for this series

Thoughts about Netflix!ASOUE and Pushing Daisies
Binge watching the show about a pie maker who can bring back the dead with a touch of his finger and killing them with a second touch solving crimes with his alive again girlfriend and grumpy PI with heart of gold (with sometimes the waitress who is in love with the pie maker who has no idea of his powers) pretty much made me come to this conclusion: Netflix!ASOUE and Pushing Daises are set in the same world.
However, Netflix!ASOUE is set in the past of the late 1990′s or mid-2000′s (if you use the books original publishing dates as the set time period), with Lemony Snicket and Beatrice II being ~ 10 years, or so I assumed (late 2000′s or mid 2010′s). Pushing Daisies takes place in the ‘future’ of the late 2000′s (2007-2009, if you want to use the show original release airing as the set time period). Note I say same world. I don’t think they’re in the same city, let alone the same state or country (well, maybe it’s possible country-wise). However, there is some food for thought in the ending note.
Excluding that both have Barry Sonnenfeld as Director and Executive Producer (though Sonnenfeld only directed two episodes IIRC of Pushing Daisies), Jim Dooley as composer (though Dooley was just one of the many composers for Netflix!ASOUE), and narrators (but in Pushing Daisies case, it’s your typical omniscient narrator), consider the in-universe elements. NOTE: There are spoilers for Pushing Daisies, so if you plan on watching it, just scroll past this post.
Both shows are colorful, with Pushing Daisies trying to aim itself as a ‘storybook come to life’ (Wikipedia, retrieved from a TV Guide interview in 2007). The world of both series is set in the ‘past’; past in a sense there are few modern elements in a ‘retro’ world. While Pushing Daisies has some exceptions, it’s rare (Season One had a Hummer in the episode ‘Dummy’ for example), which makes sense if the show is set in the future of the Netflix!ASOUE world; time finally allow some things to develop technology.
Not only are their worlds colorful, but have a ‘quirk’ to them. Pushing Daisies going more out on its way on showing it with character names, location names, and dialogue is spoken in ways most people in our world will never speak. Netflix!ASOUE’s quirkiness is based off the books most of the time, being more of the lines literature shout outs/references, but the Pushing Daisies quirkiness is there (could explain why everyone speaks almost so fast).
While short, both ASOUE and Pushing Daisies have their supernatural elements. Okay, so the Great Unknown might not be comparable to Ned’s powers, but I say it counts. We don’t know anything of their origins and that’s probably the point.
There is also an air of mystery surrounding character’s parents and their friends. While Netflix!ASOUE has the secret spy bookclub organization that is VFD trying to stop the world from being in literal and figurative flames. Pushing Daisies’s cancellation leaves a lot for interpretation with looses threads. The big one has to be the pocket watches. Seemingly unimportant in Season One of Pushing Daisies, Chuck’s pocket watch -once belonging to her father Charles Charles-, they become super important in Season Two when Dwight Dixon shows up. It’s made clear the man wants all three pocket watches he, Charles Charles, and Ned the Pie-Maker’s Dad owned, and their ‘time’ as Blue Berets -UN peacekeeping force- possibly for more than what Dwight Dixon says it is (assuming they did work for the UN; who knows what would have been reveal if the show continue?). Whatever past the three men shared was never going to get a full reveal (made worse that Charles Charles is alive again and left his daughter to presumably travel the world).
Ned’s Dad himself has his own mystery; he abandon his three sons (Ned and Ned’s half-brothers from another marriage/family) without any explanation, only telling them all he’ll be back. And for Ned at least, he did came back. He took the time to visit Ned twice at the Pie Hole, the second visit happening after he saved Ned and Olive from death, and after making sure he made sure people thought Dwight Dixon died of natural causes when in fact, he died due being in proximity of Ned’s powers. Whatever Ned’s Dad had to deal with might not be over (since he’s obviously still hiding like the ass he is), but it seems as if if the show wasn’t cancel, he would have ‘appear’ more since they actually gave him an actor who isn’t hiding his face behind a hat.
And while this is definitely unintentional, it’s something to think about. Netflix!ASOUE has tunnels roaming underground, sewers and/or pipes. The Season Two episode ‘Water & Power’ has bit character Roland Stingwell creating the Papen County Dam, and in his office there is a door tha t goes through to pipes and eventually to the dam itself.

january 2017
Happy New Year! I rang 2017 in on a beach in Hawaii surrounded by my whole family and although it was lovely, it was just as anti-climactic as last year. (When I was by myself, sitting on the couch, watching Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets). I've spent NYE with friends, with family, and by myself. There's no sure-fire formula to having a good year, so no matter how you celebrated, I wish you all a 2017 filled with heath, happiness and hope.
- the television -
The first pop culture item I consumed in 2017 was Sports Night. I hadn't revisited the series since I first watched it a few years ago but it is just as delightful and charming as I remembered. (And the laugh track is just as disconcerting). I had downloaded the full series to my iPad to keep me company on my solo plane rides and it ended up being an excellent distraction from my raging fever and chills. (0 / 10 would NOT recommend). I watched seasons one and two this month.
Next, I revisited another favourite that I'd been meaning to rewatch for ages - The Good Wife. It was monumentally harder to watch some scenes, knowing what's lurking in season 5. Eli Gold erasing the voicemail nearly broke me. ("MY PLAN IS I LOVE YOU"). I became re-obsessed and blasted through five seasons in only a couple of weeks, plus/or minus the days I needed a break to recover from that death.
One Day at a Time is a new show that premiered on Netflix on (DATE). It stars Justina Machado as a Cuban-American veteran living with her son, daughter, and mother. (Information about how it's a reboot). This show has so much heart. Justina Machado has a smile that could light up an entire damn room, Elena's storyline made me cry approximately 178 times, and each episode deals so deftly with huge topics - veteran benefits, immigration & deportation, coming out, sexism, divorce and more. Watch it! The Series of Unfortunate Events also premiered on Netflix this month. Now, I hated the ASoUE film. Hated it. So, I had low expectations going into the series but I ended up loving it! (MORE)
This month in the never-ending saga of "Finding Television Shows My Parents Don't Hate": Broadchurch. I'd never seen an episode, but knew enough about it to determine that it'd be up their alley. Death and a mystery for my dad. A+ cinematography and beautiful seaside landscapes for my mom. Together, we managed to watch the first two seasons.
Finally, Sherlock. My feelings about season 4 are… complicated. The first episode was awful. It felt like it lasted four hours long, and not in a good way. Episodes 2 and 3 were much more interesting but I don’t know if I enjoyed them? I think I’d be just fine if season four was the last.
- the books -
The first book I read in 2017 was A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara. I bought the novel months and months ago but had been putting off reading it for various reasons. It was too long, it was too sad, etc. It was long, and sad was a massive understatement but it was also incredibly written and beautiful. I had to put it down multiple times because I was distraught and my nerves felt live wires, and it was probably not the best choice for a vacation read, but I could never put it down for long and powered through all 720 pages in four days. Next, I picked up How to Be a Person in the World: Ask Polly’s Guide Through the Paradoxes of Modern Life by Heather Havrikesky because it’s new year resolution time and I need all the help I can get. Havrilesky is funny and informative and handles every question with compassion and wisdom.
The Sun is Also a Star is Nicola Yoon’s sophomore novel and it was every bit as charming and sweet as her debut. In it, Natasha, an African-American girl who is about to be deported back to Jamaica with her family, and Daniel, a Korean-American boy struggling against his parent’s expectations, collide over and over again during a whirlwind afternoon. Her first novel, Everything Everything is about to be a movie and the trailer looks delightful.
- the movies -
I watched four movies in January. They were all terrible. The Big Short involves a lot of middle aged white men yelling about money. Autumn Dreams is an awful Hallmark Channel rom com with no life and actors with no chemistry. I confess I only half payed attention to Man Up but what I did see was over-the-top and featured Lake Bell doing an extremely bad British accent. The Meddler was marginally better than the others and Rose Byrne is always great but every time I look at Susan Sarandon now, I re-live her Twitter fight with Debra Messing and her utterly tone-deaf political comments.
- miscellaneous -
Podcasts, podcasts, podcasts! First, In the Dark. The first season of this podcast reveals how law enforcement mishandled one of the most notorious child abductions in the country - the abduction of Jacob Wetterling. It’s so interesting and the reporting is so detailed, I was enthralled and disturbed through every episode. Terrible, Thanks for Asking is a podcast about grief and love and life from Nora McInerny Purmort, who lost a baby to a miscarriage and her father and husband to cancer - all within six weeks of each other. I cry at least once an episode. Season 1 is complete and up on iTunes and other podcast platforms for your binge-listening pleasure.
I hope you all had a great start to the new year and as always, happy reading / watching / listening!
